    Millions more appointments as more than 2,000 extra GPs recruited

    Boost is part of Plan for Change to rebuild the NHS by shifting healthcare from hospitals into the community and ending the 8am scramble

    Millions more GP appointments are now being delivered across the country and an extra 2,000 GPs have been hired nationwide since last October, as the government’s Plan for Change brings back the family doctor.

    The average GP is responsible for 2,300 patients, and the new tranche could deliver over four million additional appointments per year.

    It comes as encouraging new figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show the number of patients who found it difficult to contact their practice has fallen significantly from 18.7% in July/August 2024 to 10.6% in May/June this year.

    A total of 96.3% of patients who tried to contact their practice in the past 28 days were successful, while the number of patients who had a poor experience of their GP practice fell from 15% to 10.9% in the same period.

    In May 2025, an extra 12,000 GP appointments were delivered every working day compared to May 2024.

    The recruitment boost – which has already delivered an extra 2,000 GPs – forms part of the government’s Plan for Change, which is rebuilding the NHS by shifting healthcare out of hospitals into the community and ending the 8am scramble.

    Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting said:

    We said we’d deliver 1,000 more GPs this year – and we’ve busted that target, bringing 2,000 more GPs on board. With proper investment and reform we are turning the tide on our NHS, and patients are beginning to feel the benefit.

    We still have a long road ahead, and this government is determined to keep our foot on the gas.

    Our Plan for Change will deliver this progress, creating a Neighbourhood Health Service that puts GPs at its heart and makes sure the NHS is there for everyone, whenever they need it.

    Last month the government set out its 10 Year Health Plan which outlines the reforms government is driving forwards to get the NHS back on its feet and fit for the future. The plan will train thousands more GPs and create a new Neighbourhood Health Service, so millions of patients can be treated and cared for closer to their homes by pioneering teams – some based entirely under one roof.

    When the government came into office last year, unnecessary red tape was preventing practices from hiring newly qualified GPs, meaning more than 1,000 were due to graduate into unemployment.

    At the same time, there were also 1,399 fewer fully qualified GPs than a decade prior, with years of underfunding and neglect eroding GP services.

    The government took immediate action and invested an extra £82 million to allow networks of practices to hire GPs, with the funding continuing past this year.  

    This recruitment was made possible by the tough but fair decisions the Chancellor took at the budget to fix the foundations of the NHS, enabling the government to provide almost £26 billion to get the NHS back on its feet and make it fit for the future.

    The Plan for Change is already transforming the NHS for patients and staff. Backed by the government’s major cash injection of over £102 million, more 1,000 GP surgeries will receive over £102 million to create additional space to see more patients and deliver 8.3 million more appointments each year.

    An extra 4.6 million elective appointments have been delivered since July 2024 – over double the government’s target. The upgraded NHS App will also act as a digital front door to the health service, overhauling how people get advice, manage appointments and interact with services to make their healthcare more convenient and more personalised.

    Ambassador Holland welcomes Moldova’s continued efforts to safeguard electoral integrity and counter foreign malign interference.

    The United Kingdom reaffirms its strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, and for its European trajectory. As Moldova prepares for its parliamentary elections on 28 September, we commend the Moldovan people’s commitment to democratic reform and resilience. Moldova continues to play a constructive role in promoting stability and security across the European continent.

    Today, we are honoured to welcome President Maia Sandu to the United Kingdom for meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and His Majesty King Charles III.   • MIL-OSI Africa: President hails BMW’s local production of plug-in hybrid as milestone for green mobility

    President Cyril Ramaphosa has lauded BMW South Africa’s launch of the locally produced BMW X3 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) as a significant leap toward a low-carbon future and a boost for South Africa’s industrial and economic growth.

    Speaking at BMW’s Rosslyn plant in Tshwane on Thursday, the President praised the milestone as a symbol of trust in the country, as well as a demonstration of BMW Group’s long-standing commitment to the South African market. 

    The President highlighted that this world-class facility was the first BMW plant to be built outside of Germany and has been at the centre of the group’s operations since 1973. 

    “A number of world-class vehicles are manufactured right here at this plant, including both ICE and hybrid models from the BMW X family. And now, we have reached another milestone with the production of the BMW X3 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.  

    “The shift to green mobility and electrification in vehicle production is in line with commitments by countries to reduce emissions and support the transition to a low-carbon, climate resilient global economy. We are greatly encouraged by this milestone reached by the BMW Group,” the President said.

    President Ramaphosa said the Rosslyn plant remains a pillar of South Africa’s automotive sector, which contributes approximately 4.9% to the country’s GDP, sustains over 115 000 direct manufacturing jobs, and supports more than half a million jobs across its value chain.

    BMW’s investment in local manufacturing comes at a time when South Africa is working to position itself as a globally competitive hub for future mobility. 

    “As the transition to battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen mobility gathers momentum, South Africa is perfectly positioned as a key global manufacturing base for the mobility of the future,” President Ramaphosa said.

    He reaffirmed government’s commitment to enabling this shift, highlighting the recently released Electric Vehicle White Paper and an incentive programme under the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP). 

    These are aimed at creating a stable and predictable policy environment to attract investment, grow exports, and expand the local electric vehicle (EV) market. 

    “The production of the BMW X3 plug-in hybrid locally is a testament to the trust placed in our skills, our workers, our partnerships and our potential. Let us honour this achievement by staying the course, driving transformation, creating jobs and leading Africa’s industrial future,” he said.

    President Ramaphosa also touched on the strategic opportunity presented by South Africa’s mineral wealth. 

    “The global shift to clean vehicles presents opportunities for the local component manufacturing sector, whose focus has been on ICE components. With our significant reserves of critical minerals, we must become a hub for processing and beneficiation. 

    “We are finalising targeted incentives for battery cell localisation, EV component manufacture, clean mobility research and design, and critical mineral beneficiation,” he said. 

    The President also acknowledged the changing global trade landscape – particularly the recent announcements on tariffs by the United States. 

    “The recent announcements on tariffs by the United States, an important market for our vehicle exports, further underscores the need to diversity our export base and accelerate domestic value creation,” he said. 

    Youth development

    The President commended BMW’s commitment to youth development, including its training academy that produces 300 apprentices annually, its long-term support for the Youth Employment Service (YES), and its initiatives to develop young women leaders and black industrialists. 

    He also praised BMW’s investment in digital skills through its partnership with UNICEF and its Tshwane-based IT Hub, which employs more than 2 000 digital professionals.

    Council Advice Services in Dundee have successfully helped secure over £17 million in financial gains for people across the city.

    Compared to the previous year, there has been a 37% increase in the total amount of money put back into people’s pocket. This is largely a result of increased collaborative partnership working and more proactive community engagement.

    Significant financial gains and benefit claims were made in several key areas over the past year, including:

    • Maximising benefit uptake with Macmillan Cancer Support – over £2 million  
    • Working with Midwives and Health Visitors to identify and support people eligible for financial support – over £500,000
    • Pension Credit Take-Up campaign – over £2 million  
    • Partnership work with GP surgeries – over £3 million

    In addition, the Council’s money advisers have been working with people who are struggling with debt, offering advice and assistance to help them regain financial stability.

    As part of the proactive community engagement efforts, Council Advice Services has been holding clinics directly in local communities. These clinics are available in several locations including Lochee Hub, Broughty Ferry Library, and St Mary’s Community Centre. You can find a full list on our website.

  • MIL-OSI: Unimot plans to enter the defence sector – a joint project with PZL Sędziszów and a Ukrainian partner in the field of drones

    WARSAW, Poland, July 24, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — PZL Defence was established on 21 July 2025 and is currently undergoing registration. On 24 July 2025, Unimot signed a letter of intent with PZL Sędziszów and PZL Defence, declaring its intention to develop strategic cooperation and build the new company’s expertise in the field of advanced defence technologies. At the same time, an agreement was concluded under which Unimot, following the registration of PZL Defence in the National Court Register, will acquire 40% of the shares in the new company for the amount of PLN 400,000. The initial shareholding structure also provides for a target share of 10% for PZL Sędziszów and 50% for the Ukrainian partner. After completion of the investment process and obtaining the necessary administrative approvals, PZL Defence plans to launch the production of civilian drones and then, after obtaining a licence, expand its activities to include military drones and anti-drone systems for the protection of critical infrastructure.

That is why we plan to engage in a project that combines Polish engineering resources with the unique know-how of our Ukrainian partners, proven not on a training ground but in real combat conditions,” says Adam Sikorski, President of the Management Board of Unimot.

    PZL Sędziszów (the name comes from the abbreviation: Polskie Zakłady Lotnicze, meaning Polish Aviation Works), as a licensed manufacturer for the defence sector, will contribute advanced expertise in precision engineering to the project and provide access to a new production hall adapted to the requirements of the defence industry and extensive laboratory and technological facilities. PZL Sędziszów is a plant with over 85 years of history and, based on its current military production licences, currently manufactures filters for military vehicles (Rosomak) and military helicopters from the Leonardo group.

    The team of the new company, PZL Defence, is being built with the participation of experts from Poland and Ukraine, including specialists with military and industrial experience. Ultimately, the company will establish a research and development (R&D) centre focused on the design of reconnaissance and interception drones, loitering munitions and systems for neutralising threats from unmanned aerial vehicles.

    “The PZL Defence project is a carefully considered response to the profound transformation taking place on the modern battlefield. Since 2022, Russia has deployed over 28,000 Shahed drones against Ukraine, and according to Ukrainian intelligence, this number could soon rise to over 500 drones every night. This clearly shows that anti-drone systems are becoming an integral part of modern defence, both offensive and defensive. Together with our partners, we want to develop technologies that provide a real response to these challenges,” emphasises Adam Sikorski.

    The planned activities are in line with the long-term trend of increasing defence spending, both in Poland and across Europe. In 2025, Poland’s defence budget will reach a record PLN 186.6 billion, which is 4.7% of the planned GDP. In the following years, spending is expected to grow – according to estimates, in 2025–2035 it may reach a total of PLN 1.9 trillion. The PZL Defence project is also in line with EU priorities such as the Readiness 2030 programme and the SAFE mechanism, which aim to allocate up to EUR 800 billion to investments in the European defence industry, with access to financial resources, EIB instruments and a flexible budgetary framework.

    Ambassador Holland welcomes the OSCE Programme Office’s engagement with the Government of Tajikistan during the reporting period, and its continued focus on promoting gender equality, fostering cross-border cooperation and supporting penal reforms.

    I warmly welcome Ms. Turcan to the Permanent Council and thank you for stepping into the leadership role during this transitional period. Strong leadership and reliable resourcing are essential for OSCE field missions to function effectively. We again urge participating States to resolve the budget impasse and ensure all OSCE institutions – including the Border Management Staff College – are adequately funded.

    I would like to highlight several areas of the Programme Office’s work that are of particular importance to the UK.

    First, the Mission’s efforts to promote gender equality and support survivors of domestic violence through Women’s Resource Centres and police capacity building. These centres provide vital shelter and services, helping women escape cycles of abuse and rebuild their lives. The UK remains deeply committed to addressing gender-based violence.

    Second, the Programme Office’s role in fostering cross-border cooperation and regional security. We commend Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic for their leadership in peacefully resolving border disputes. These diplomatic achievements underscore the value of dialogue. The UK remains committed to working with Tajikistan, its neighbours, and the OSCE to address regional challenges, including those stemming from Afghanistan.

    Third, we commend the Mission’s work in the human dimension, particularly on penal reform and embedding human rights in government training. We also welcome efforts to strengthen media standards. We note with regret that ODIHR’s observation mission were unable to implement their mandate for the elections in March and encourage all relevant parties to facilitate the required access in the future.

    I would also like to commend the Government of Tajikistan for their continued leadership on climate and water security, not least demonstrated by their co-hosting of the International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation earlier this year resulting in the adoption of the Dushanbe Declaration. As climate change makes water access more competitive and harder to manage, cooperation and solutions become more vital.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Business coalition calls for 25% cut in the cost of red tape by 2030

    Business, universities, and investors have jointly urged the federal government to commit to cutting the cost of red tape by 25% by 2030, in a submission for next month’s Economic Reform Roundtable.

    The push to reduce regulation is in line with action by the EU and the United Kingdom’s Labour government, the submission says.

    “Cutting red tape means faster home builds, quicker loan approvals, and lower prices at the checkout,” it says.

    “For Australians, it’s the difference between waiting months or days for a service, and it ensures growth isn’t choked by unnecessary or outdated processes that haven’t kept up with the modern world.”

    The need to push against red tape is highlighted in the recently-published book Abundance by Derek Thompson and Ezra Klein. The book has impressed Treasurer Jim Chalmers, who has urged his colleagues to read it.

    The coalition of 27 groups includes small, medium and large businesses, universities and the investment community. The united approach is an attempt by business to avoid being divided and trapped at the roundtable, as business felt it was at the 2022 Jobs and Skills summit.

    On taxation, the submission proposes a three-month review, supported by Treasury, the Productivity Commission, business representatives and other stakeholders to “kick start” comprehensive tax reform.

    The exercise would be underpinned by principles that encouraged investment and economic growth.

    Business has become concerned the roundtable could be a way of seeking support for tax increases rather than comprehensive tax reform.

    The submission says tax reform and the trade offs involved, should not be pursued separately from measures to promote efficiency and spending restraint to “ensure government lives within its means”.

    Tax reform should support the dynamism and productivity of Australian individuals and businesses”, the submission says.

    Revenue should be raised with the least possible cost to society, and there should be minimum distortions to work, savings and investment.

    Among other proposals, the coalition urges a boost to investment and innovation by reforming the handling of R&D.

    It says there should be a national strategy to boost Australia’s investment competitiveness.

    The submission backs reforming the framework for environmental and planning approvals. It says there should be a “single, predictable, and transparent approval pathway that provides timely and certain decisions.”

    “Our economic rule book is out of date. If we don’t fix it, not only will Australians struggle to get ahead in life, but future generations are at risk of missing out on the quality of life we enjoy today,” the joint group of industry associations says.

    Call for evidence: An inspection of refusals and cancellations of permission to enter the UK

    The ICIBI invites anyone with knowledge or first-hand experience of refusals and cancellations of permission to enter the UK to submit evidence to contribute to this inspection by close of play 20 August 2025.

    The Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration (ICIBI) has begun an inspection of refusals and cancellations of permission to enter the UK. 

    As Independent Chief Inspector, I am inviting anyone with knowledge or first-hand experience of refusals and cancellations of permission to enter the UK to submit evidence to inform this inspection. I would be pleased to hear about both what is working well and what could be improved in the following areas:  

    • the role of Border Force officers in refusing and cancelling permission to enter the UK at airports, seaports and juxtaposed controls 

    • the efficiency, effectiveness and consistency of current practice 

    • the impact of carrier checks for organisations and passengers 

    • the impact of digitisation of the border on the ability of Border Force officers to identify individuals whose permission to enter the UK should be refused or cancelled 

    These areas of interest are not exhaustive, and I welcome submissions that touch on other points. Information received in response to this call for evidence will play an important part in defining the precise scope and focus of the inspection.

    The information you submit may be quoted in the final inspection report, but it is the ICIBI’s practice not to name sources and to anonymise as much as possible any examples or case studies.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Old pontoon and link bridge at Mount Batten Pier to go

    Work will start next week (last week of July) to remove the old link bridge and pontoon at Mount Batten Pier.

    The structure has been closed to the public since last spring and ferry services rerouted to the landing stage at the Mount Batten Water Sports and Activities Centre nearby.

    An investigation earlier this year found that cracks detected within the bridge link to the pontoon had opened up significantly and could break at any time, posing a risk to marine traffic in the vicinity. Bracing works were carried out to the structure as a temporary measure while options were considered.

    Marine traffic were made aware and asked to keep their distance from the structure.

    The Council has been looking at the logistics of removing the bridge and pontoon and following a competitive tender process, has now entered into an arrangement to transfer ownership of the bridge and pontoon to Voyager Marine, who will also carry out the works to safely remove the structure.

    Logistics are being finalised but this move expected to start next week, subject to tide and weather.

    The Mount Batten Water Taxi service has been using the Mount Batten Sailing and Watersports Centre pontoon to operate since the closure.

    The link bridge will be removed by barge when high tide facilitates this and will be towed away, with the pontoon, to Voyager Boat Yard where they will be repurposed. The work will also involve removal of the piles below the seabed.

    The Plymouth Sound National Marine Park project have plans in train to replace the centre’s pontoon with a new structure. These plans have been extended to include extra provision for the Mount Batten Water Taxi to enable a return to a full service.

    The Council, is working in partnership on the project with the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and the Mount Batten Centre and its board. Detailed onsite investigations have been carried out and the Council has issued a tender for work to build a new pontoon, with associated seabed infrastructure.

    The contract is expected to be awarded later this summer.

    Plymouth City Council’s Taxi Licensing Team is set to play a greater role in keeping the public safe, thanks to new powers granted through the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) accredited by Devon and Cornwall Police.

    The accreditation recognises the team’s ability to support frontline safety efforts and gives officers additional tools to help tackle anti-social behaviour, manage traffic incidents, and work more closely with police.

    CSAS gives trained Council officers limited police powers, enabling them to respond more effectively to issues that affect residents and visitors across the city.

    Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet Member for Community Safety for Plymouth City Council, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our Taxi Licensing Team and a real boost for community safety in Plymouth. By equipping our officers with additional powers and training, we’re making sure they can respond quickly and effectively to issues that matter to residents. It’s about being proactive, visible, and working hand-in-hand with the police to keep people safe.”

    The team has undergone an assessed training with police colleagues, including traffic management and public engagement. Once accredited, officers will be able to:

    • Request name and address in cases of anti-social behaviour
    • Power to stop and direct traffic to protect public safety
    • Require names and addresses for individuals not complying with the above requests
    • Share and access relevant intelligence with Devon and Cornwall Police

    These new powers will help the team respond more effectively to incidents, increase partnership working between the council and provide a more visible uniformed presence in the community. Officers will continue to wear their standard uniforms, which will now display the CSAS logo as well as carrying police-approved ID badges and powers cards to reflect their new responsibilities.

    The scheme has already proven successful in other parts of the country, and across Devon and Cornwall, and Plymouth’s adoption marks a significant step forward in local efforts to build safer, more resilient communities.

    We’re branching out again! Over the next few days over 40 new trees will be taking root in Armada Way, adding even more leafy loveliness to the city centre. Here’s the lowdown on our latest green arrivals:

    • Magnolia Kobus – These beauties are blooming marvellous!
    • Alders – Perfectly planted in rain gardens, because they absolutely love a good soak.
    • Himalayan Birch – Forming a stunning copse grove, surrounded by rain gardens for that extra splash of nature.
    • ‘New Horizon’ Elms – Specially bred to thrive in city settings and resistant to Dutch Elm disease, adding strength and structure to the landscape
    • Red Maple – a one-of-a-kind showstopper in the scheme marking the new mobility hub.
    • London Plane – the tallest and most majestic of them all, this striking specimen will be the crown jewel of Armada Way’s canopy.

    Planting trees in the summer

    We know that there are a lot of questions as to why we’re planting trees in Armada Way this summer.

    We know summer isn’t the ideal time to plant trees – normally, it’s better to do it in the cooler, dormant months. But because Armada Way is such a complex and busy part of the city, we’ve had to carefully plan the work to avoid too much disruption for residents, businesses and everyone who uses the city centre. That means some of the tree planting is happening now, during the growing season.

    We’re not taking any chances though. Our team has worked closely with tree experts, nurseries and contractors to make sure the trees have the best possible chance to thrive. Here’s what we’re doing:

    • Quick turnaround: Trees are being planted as soon as they arrive, so they’re not left out of the ground for long.
    • Top-quality trees: We’ve chosen strong, healthy trees from trusted nurseries that are used to growing for urban environments.
    • Specialist planting team: The people planting the trees are experienced and using the right tools and techniques.
    • Container-grown trees: Where we can, we’re using trees that have been grown in containers, which makes them more adaptable to being planted in summer.
    • Better soil: We’ve used specially engineered soil that holds moisture and nutrients, and we’ve made sure the roots have plenty of space to grow.
    • Boosting root health: We’ve added natural fungi to the soil to help the roots absorb water and nutrients more easily.
    • Smart watering: A built-in irrigation system is in place to keep the trees well-watered, and we’re also using misting during heatwaves.
    • Mulch magic: A layer of mulch around each tree helps keep the soil moist and stops weeds from taking over.
    • Regular checks: Our team is keeping a close eye on the planting to make sure everything’s done properly and the trees are settling in well.

    We’re also being realistic. Even with all these measures, planting trees in a city centre during summer is tough – especially with the kind of heatwaves we’ve had this year.

    That’s why we’ve got a two-year aftercare plan in place. If any trees don’t make it, they’ll be replaced.

    Aberdeen Art Gallery has welcomed its one millionth visitor since re-opening in November 2019 following its landmark redevelopment.  
    Eleanor Watson of Giffnock was visiting with her sister and nephew. They were met by Helen Fotherghill, Service Manager – Archives Gallery & Museums, who presented Dorothy with a certificate for an artwork which will be ‘adopted’ in her name – A Ground Swell, Carradale, by William McTaggart, which is on display in the French Impressions gallery. Eleanor also received a goody bag of Tall Ships commemorative items.  
     
    Visitor numbers to the Art Gallery swelled during the Tall Ships Races weekend, with the Gallery offering extended opening hours until 8pm during the event for visitors to enjoy the Monsters of the Deep exhibition and Festival of the Sea events. 
     
    Councillor Martin Greig, Aberdeen City Council’s culture spokesman, said, “The re-imagined Art Gallery, with its outstanding collection, is the city’s flagship cultural venue. I’m delighted to share the news of this major milestone and offer my congratulations to Eleanor Watson on being the millionth visitor.     Eleanor’s nephew, Eoin, said, “The Gallery has been a very important place for me. I visited with my mother from early childhood. I lost both my parents to cancer at a young age and have been away from Aberdeen for some 30 years. Recently returning to the city I am extremely grateful I rediscovered the Gallery. I have faced a number of personal challenges this year and the Saturday morning Artroom sessions at the Gallery run by Elaine from Grampian Hospitals Art Trust, which I have attended for a couple of months, have shone a light in my life. It is so apt and somewhat overwhelming that walking through the door with my Aunts, showing them where Mum and I spent time together, that Eleanor should be singled out as the millionth visitor since reopening.” 
     
    Aberdeen City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund were the major funders of the Art Gallery redevelopment, with support from many other trusts, foundations, corporate and individual donors.     50 years on from the signing of the Helsinki Final Act Russia fails to live up to its promises: UK statement to the OSCE

    Ambassador Holland commits to continuing to highlight and condemn Russia’s attacks against Ukraine for as long as Russia insists on carrying them out. Doing so is necessary because of the obvious humanitarian imperative but it is also a question of living up to our promises to one another when we signed the Helsinki Final Act.

    Mr Chair, there have been 120 Permanent Councils and 46 Special and Reinforced Permanent Councils since Russia launched its illegal full scale war of aggression on Ukraine in February 2022.  The UK has spoken on each of these occasions, highlighting Russia’s violation of the Helsinki principles and the Final Act.

    Next week we gather in Helsinki to mark 50 years of the signature of the Final Act. This should have been a moment to reflect on its positive and historic legacy; alongside the UN and Paris Charters, it has set the standards by which we should treat each other and our citizenry. Instead we are travelling to Finland with drones still pummelling Ukrainian civilian targets indiscriminately and an unapologetic Russia refusing to take the outstretched hand of peace offered to them by the victim of their aggression, Ukraine.

    The UK deeply regrets that there is still no sign of a let up in these attacks on civilians. One of the latest of these was an attack on the entrance to a metro station providing shelter to Ukrainian civilians escaping Russian bombardment. The Russian State evidently want as many Ukrainian people to be terrorised as possible. The UK will continue to highlight and condemn them for as long as Russia insists on carrying them out. As well as an obvious humanitarian imperative, doing so is also a question of living up to our promises to one another when we signed the Helsinki Final Act.

    Business leaders welcome the UK-India Free Trade Agreement

    Business leaders have strongly welcomed the signing of the UK-India Free Trade Agreement.

    Business leaders have strongly welcomed the signing of the UK-India Free Trade Agreement, as Business and Trade Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds and India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, signed the landmark trade deal.

    The £4.8bn trade deal will unlock economic growth for each region and nation of the UK, and is widely backed by large and small businesses across aerospace, financial and professional services, food and drink, and the automotive sector.

    Business Groups  

    Rain Newton-Smith, CEO, CBI said: 

    In an era of rising protectionism, today’s announcement sends a powerful signal that the UK is open for business and remains resolute in its commitment to free and fair trade.  

    A trade agreement with India – one of the world’s fastest-growing economies – is a springboard for long-term partnership and prosperity. UK firms can take advantage of this new platform to scale, diversify and compete on the global stage.  

    The CBI looks forward to working closely alongside the Confederation of Indian Industry to turn ambition into action and negotiation into real-world impact. Ensuring this agreement delivers tangible benefits for businesses on both sides will be critical to meeting the UK’s growth ambitions.

    William Bain, Head of Trade Policy at the BCC, said: 

    The signing of this agreement is a clear signal of the UK’s continuing commitment to free and fair trade. It will open a new era for our businesses and boost investment between two of the world’s largest economies.    

    Currently around 16,000 UK companies are trading goods with Indian companies, and there is high interest in our Chamber Network to grow that.  This deal will create new opportunities in the transport, travel, creative and business support sectors alongside traditional strengths in finance and professional services.

    Policy Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), Tina McKenzie, said: 

    India is the fourth largest economy in the world, and today’s trade deal provides exciting growth potential for UK small businesses. 

    Already one-in-seven (14%) of our members who export have India among their overseas markets, and this deal opens the way for that number to grow. It’s welcome that the agreement includes a specific small business chapter. 

    Encouraging more small firms to trade internationally, and making it easier for those who already do to increase their international trade, is an important flank in the quest for economic growth. Reducing barriers is key to achieving that.

    Richard Heald OBE, Chair, UK-India Business Council, said:  

    The UK-India FTA marks a historic milestone in the bilateral relationship.

    Businesses across both countries have long called for an agreement that reduces barriers, enhances market access, and creates a clear framework for long-term, sustainable growth.     Aerospace

    Automotives  

    Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said:  

    The UK-India trade agreement represents a significant achievement, partially liberalising the Indian automotive market for the first time.

    While the highly complex deal confirms some compromises, its entry into force will provide commercial opportunities for UK manufacturers who will be able to access vastly reduced tariffs on internal combustion vehicles from day one, and on electrified vehicles and parts in the longer term.

    To ensure maximum and timely benefit, we now need rapid ratification and renewed efforts to agree fair and workable solutions on tariff-rate-quotas administration.

    A JLR spokesperson said:  

    We welcome this free trade agreement between the UK and India, which over time will deliver reduced tariff access to the Indian car market for JLR’s luxury vehicles.

    India is an important market for our British built products and represents significant future growth opportunities.

    Food and drink 

    Nik Jhangiani, Interim Chief Executive, Diageo, said: 

    This agreement marks a great moment for both Scotch and Scotland, and we’ll be raising a glass of Johnnie Walker to all those who have worked so hard to get it secured. 

    Jean-Etienne Gourgues, Chivas Brothers Chairman and CEO, said: 

    Signature of the UK-India FTA is a sign of hope in challenging times for the spirits industry. 

    India is the world’s biggest whisky market by volume and greater access will be an eventual game changer for the export of our Scotch whisky brands, such as Chivas Regal and Ballantine’s.

    The deal will support long term investment and jobs in our distilleries in Speyside and our bottling plant at Kilmalid and help deliver growth in both Scotland and India over the next decade.

    Let’s hope that both governments will move quickly to ratification so business can get to work implementing the deal!

    There are tremendous hurdles for UK spirits producers in terms of entering and succeeding in the Indian market.

    The extremely high import tariffs are probably the most significant barrier to entry we have experienced anywhere internationally.

    Philip McKee, Sales Manager at Biopanda, a Belfast-based medtech manufacturer which exports in vitro test kits for clinical laboratories, veterinary practice, and food safety laboratories, said:   

    Biopanda have been supplying a range of diagnostic products to the Indian market throughout the past ten years. We value the business we have done already throughout India and with the introduction of the UK-India FTA this should benefit in increased trade with the removal of export barriers.  

    This will hopefully increase the market access, allowing our distributors throughout India to provide a larger range of our highly accurate clinical diagnostic products at a lower price to the consumer. 

    Manufacturing 

    Graeme Macdonald, JCB Chief Executive, said:  

    India is a great country in which to do business. JCB has been manufacturing machines there since 1979. So, we know India very well and the opportunity for British businesses in that huge market is significant.  

    It’s the fifth largest economy in the world and is tipped to become the third largest by 2028. This Free Trade Agreement should give British businesses the confidence they need to enter the market, trade more easily and benefit from the massive opportunity.

    Professor Carl Stephen Patrick Hunter OBE, Chairman Coltraco Ultrasonics Limited & Director-General The Durham Institute of Research, Development & Invention, said:

    HKMoA to stage first exhibition of Chinese art master Wu Guanzhong in Korea       
         The exhibition is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and jointly organised by the SAC and the HKMoA. The exhibition is made possible by the Wu Guanzhong Art Sponsorship. This exhibition in Seoul is a continuation of the popular thematic exhibition of Wu, held at the HKMoA from March 2024 to March 2025, which achieved great success and attracted more than 570 000 visitors during the exhibition period. Accompanied by insightful excerpts from the artist’s writings, the exhibition allows visitors to explore the art master’s distinctive chromatic aesthetics as well as the countless passions and flights of imagination evoked from the interplay between black and white. There will be opportunities to appreciate iconic paintings such as “Two Swallows”, “Reminiscences of Jiangnan”, “Waterway” and more. 
          
         Wu’s works perfectly fuse Eastern and Western aesthetics. He dedicated his entire life to exploring the integration of Chinese and Western art, studied traditional Chinese ink painting and also ventured into the colourful world of oil painting in his early years. After studying in France, he returned to China. His works are noted for his masterful integration of the emotional depth of traditional Chinese ink painting with Western modernist and abstract composition. In 1992, Wu was among the first living Chinese artists to be honoured with a solo exhibition at the British Museum, and his works are also widely exhibited in Asia, Europe and the United States.
          
         Wu had deep connections with Hong Kong, and held multiple exhibitions and participated in various art events in the city. Over the years, Wu and his family have continuously made donations of Wu’s works and archives to the HKMoA, making up a substantial collection of over 450 items. The HKMoA has become the institution with the largest and most diverse collection of Wu’s works. With the support of the Wu Guanzhong Art Sponsorship, the HKMoA is bringing the museum collection and the research and curatorial insights of the art of Wu overseas, and will continue to promote Wu and modern Chinese art to audiences in different regions and at various levels through comprehensive and diversified perspectives.
          
         In addition, an immersive installation from the “Wu Guanzhong Art Sponsorship Cross-disciplinary Series: Wu Guanzhong x Chris Cheung” will also be on display overseas for the first time, complementing the exhibition. Processed by AI, “Sentient Pond – Seoul Edition” created by Hong Kong artist Chris Cheung generates exclusive paintings by visitors that embody Wu’s brushstrokes and artistic style through machine learning over hundreds of Wu’s paintings from the museum collection, to carry on the unconventional creations and spirit of Wu with a contemporary twist.
          
         Hong Kong Week is an annual arts festival organised by the LCSD, celebrating Hong Kong’s creative excellence worldwide and fostering cultural exchanges and artistic collaboration. This year, the festival will arrive in Seoul for the first time. Beginning on September 26, a total of 14 programmes will feature stage performances, film screenings, outdoor shows, visual art exhibitions, comic creations, fashion designs as well as other fringe activities.

  • India–UK CETA to strengthen global footprint of Indian SMEs

    India and the United Kingdom on Thursday signed a landmark Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), aimed at enhancing access to goods and services between the two countries.

    The agreement, signed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is set to give a major boost to India’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of the country’s economy. SMEs contributed around 30.1% to India’s GDP in 2022–23 and accounted for 45.8% of India’s total exports in 2024–25.

    SMEs benefit from various provisions of the CETA, including through provisions on faster processing at customs, agreements to recognise and facilitate digital systems and paperless trade, and a dedicated chapter to help SMEs. A contact point for SMEs will be established under the ambit of the CETA, facilitating communication and coordination benefiting SMEs.

    In addition to lower tariffs and better market access, SMEs will also benefit from the cooperation between India and the UK on best practices regarding trade education and finance, digital skills, business infrastructure and other important areas, facilitating business opportunities for SMEs.

    The Working Group on Government Procurement and on Innovation enable cooperation to address the issues of SMEs and facilitate participation in government procurement and innovation.

    India and the United Kingdom on Thursday signed a landmark Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), aimed at enhancing access to goods and services between the two countries.

    The agreement, signed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will generate tangible employment gains and create brighter futures for Indian workers across multiple sectors. It also focuses on fostering inclusive economic growth by creating meaningful opportunities for women and youth across both nations.

    The immediate removal of duties on Indian products from labour-intensive sectors such as gems and jewellery, textiles, leather and footwear, and food processing will not only boost employment but also directly benefit Indian workers in these industries.

    The CETA offers a range of protections to workers by endorsing internationally recognized labour rights. Workers will benefit from increased public awareness of labour laws and access to impartial and independent tribunals and proceedings for the enforcement of their rights in an accessible and transparent manner.

    Expanding opportunities for women and youth

    India’s youth, aged 15 to 29, make up approximately 27.3% of the population and are key drivers of social and economic change. The CETA is poised to expand high-quality employment pathways for this demographic by easing access to services markets, securing mutual recognition of professional qualifications, and facilitating short-term mobility for talent in sectors such as IT, healthcare, finance, and the creative industries.

    By fostering cooperation on gender-responsive standards, sharing best practices in financial services, and improving digital inclusion, the CETA ensures that women business owners, entrepreneurs, and young professionals can access new markets, acquire valuable information, and participate equitably in global, regional, and domestic economies.

    Dedicated working groups under the CETA will promote activities that address discriminatory practices, encourage diversity, and further gender equality. Lower tariffs on inputs and advanced manufacturing equipment can spur MSME supply-chain integration, creating skilled vocational jobs beyond metros.

    Additionally, the CETA will promote cooperative activities between the Parties that will enable capacity and skill development of workers.

    The CETA also provides enhanced market access for workers which include better mobility access to the UK for Indian workers engaged in maintenance and repair and tourist guides, among others. The CETA and its enhanced market access will create job opportunities for a wide range of workers across various sectors.

    CW3 cost extension forms updated

    Updates to Controlled work forms (CW3) for extension requests on hourly rates and standard fee cases in immigration & asylum matters

    Which forms are affected?

    Changes have been made to the CW3 forms that immigration providers use when seeking an extension to a cost limit in a Controlled Work matter.

    How have the forms been changed?

    Changes have been made to the PDF versions:

    • to update the contract references to include the 2024 Standard Civil Contract
    • to ensure that terminology matches that used in the Standard Civil Contract
    • to help clarify the use of the forms in different case types

    We have also removed the electronic (Excel) versions as these are rarely used.

    Will old forms still be accepted?

    Previous versions of the application forms will continue to be accepted until 27 October 2025 so providers have time to adjust and to allow software vendors time to update their case management systems.

    Forms have been reviewed to ensure they support the current 2024 Standard Civil Contract.

  • MIL-OSI: Nasdaq Reports Second Quarter 2025 Results; Double-Digit Net Revenue Growth Reflects Strong Momentum Across All Divisions

    NEW YORK, July 24, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Nasdaq, Inc. (Nasdaq: NDAQ) today reported financial results for the second quarter of 2025.

    • Second quarter 2025 net revenue1 was $1.3 billion, an increase of 13% over the second quarter of 2024, or up 12% on an organic2 basis. This included Solutions3 revenue growing 10%.
    • Annualized Recurring Revenue (ARR)4 of $2.9 billion increased 10% over the second quarter of 2024, or up 9% on an organic basis. Annualized SaaS revenue increased 13%, or 12% on an organic basis, and represented 37% of ARR.
    • Financial Technology revenue of $464 million increased 10% over the second quarter of 2024.
    • Index revenue of $196 million grew 17%, with $88 billion of net inflows over the trailing twelve months and $20 billion in the second quarter of 2025.
    • GAAP diluted earnings per share grew over 100% in the second quarter of 2025. Non-GAAP5 diluted earnings per share grew 24% in the second quarter of 2025.
    • In the second quarter of 2025, the company returned $155 million to shareholders through dividends and $100 million through repurchases of common stock. The company also repaid $400 million of senior unsecured notes in the quarter.

    FINANCIAL REVIEW

    • Second quarter 2025 net revenue was $1,306 million, reflecting 13% growth versus the prior year period. Organic net revenue growth was 12%.
    • Solutions revenue was $991 million in the second quarter of 2025, up 10% versus the prior year period, reflecting strong growth from Index and Financial Technology.
    • ARR grew 10% year-over-year, or 9% on an organic basis, in the second quarter of 2025, with 12% ARR growth for Financial Technology, or 11% on an organic basis, and 7% ARR growth for Capital Access Platforms, or 6% on an organic basis.
    • Market Services net revenue was $306 million in the second quarter of 2025, up 22% versus the prior year period, or 21% on an organic basis.
    • Second quarter 2025 GAAP operating expenses were $738 million, in line with the prior year period. The quarter reflected lower restructuring costs, offset by higher compensation and benefits costs, merger and strategic initiative costs, and increased investments in technology and people to drive innovation and long-term growth.
    • Second quarter 2025 non-GAAP operating expenses were $585 million, reflecting 9% growth versus the prior year period, or 8% growth on an organic basis. The organic increase for the quarter reflected growth driven by increased investments in technology and people to drive innovation and long-term growth, partially offset by the benefit of synergies.
    • Cash flow from operations was $746 million for the second quarter, enabling the company to make continued progress on its deleveraging plan. In the second quarter of 2025, the company returned $155 million to shareholders through dividends and $100 million through repurchases of common stock. As of June 30, 2025, there was $1.5 billion remaining under the board authorized share repurchase program. The company also repaid $400 million of senior unsecured notes in the second quarter of 2025.

    2025 EXPENSE AND TAX GUIDANCE UPDATE6

    • The company is updating its 2025 non-GAAP operating expense guidance to a range of $2,295 million to $2,335 million. The driver of the update is the impact of foreign exchange rates, which is offset in net revenue. The company is maintaining its 2025 non-GAAP tax rate guidance in the range of 22.5% to 24.5%.

    STRATEGIC AND BUSINESS UPDATES

    • Financial Technology achieved solid revenue growth across each subdivision in a dynamic macro environment. Robust client demand drove double-digit revenue and ARR growth. FinTech delivered 57 new clients, 130 upsells, and a record 7 cross-sells. Second quarter highlights included:
      • Financial Crime Management Technology is executing on its key growth initiatives. Second quarter results included three new enterprise client signings, including a cross-sell client and 2 upsells, reflecting continued progress on its enterprise client land and expand strategy. Nasdaq Verafin added 46 new small-and-medium bank clients in the second quarter. The business also signed its first proof of concept project with a European Tier 1 bank as part of its international expansion strategy.
      • Regulatory Technology’s success with new client wins and upsells driving growth. AxiomSL signed a new client and a cross-sell. The business accelerated its momentum with existing clients in the second quarter with 34 upsells, including the renewal of a large bank. Surveillance signed 6 new clients in the quarter, including 2 market operators and a European regulator, as well as 3 cross-sells. The business closed 33 upsells in the quarter, including a strategic upsell to a large European bank.
      • Solid momentum in Capital Markets Technology. Second quarter client demand was robust, supported by the ongoing market modernization mega trend. Calypso signed 2 new clients, 37 upsells, and a cross-sell. Market Technology secured 2 new clients, 24 upsells, and a cross-sell. In the second quarter, the business signed 3 clients to its fourth-generation marketplace technology platform, Nasdaq Eqlipse, including 2 fully managed services mandates where Nasdaq hosts and manages the clients’ entire trading environment and one AWS-hosted SaaS deployment.
    • Index ETP assets under management reached record levels and surpassed $700 billion at quarter-end. In the second quarter, Index had $20 billion in net inflows. ETP AUM was $745 billion at quarter-end, an all-time high. Nasdaq launched 33 new Index products in the second quarter, including 21 international products, 12 products in partnership with new Index clients, and 7 in the institutional insurance annuity space. Nasdaq and CME Group signed an extension through 2039 of CME Group’s exclusive license contract to offer futures and options on futures based on the Nasdaq-100 and other Nasdaq indexes, reflecting the companies’ shared commitment to delivering value through trusted benchmark products.
    • Nasdaq extended its listing leadership to 46 consecutive quarters. Nasdaq had the highest number of first half listings since 2021. New listings in the first half included 83 operating companies that raised more than $8 billion in total proceeds, contributing to a 81% win rate for eligible operating company listings. In the second quarter, the company welcomed 38 U.S. operating company IPOs that raised more than $3.5 billion in proceeds with a 79% win rate. Nasdaq maintained momentum in its switch program, attracting nearly $50 billion in market value in the second quarter and over $270 billion year-to-date, including Shopify, Thomson Reuters, and Kimberly Clark.
    • Market Services delivered record net revenue with record cash equities and derivatives revenue in the U.S. Nasdaq’s exchanges achieved record U.S. cash equities volumes in a quarter in which the industry achieved record volumes. During the Russell reconstitution, Nasdaq’s Closing Cross successfully executed 2.5 billion shares in 0.871 seconds across Nasdaq-listed securities that represented a record $102.5 billion dollars in notional value. Extending the first quarter’s trend, Nasdaq’s North American markets continued to experience exceptional message traffic in the second quarter, reaching a new record of more than 560 billion messages7 in a day. Nasdaq’s European equities business achieved sequential market share improvement in an elevated volume environment.
    • Nasdaq continues to execute on its 2025 strategic priorities — Integrate, Innovate, Accelerate — positioning the company to capitalize on opportunities for sustainable, scalable, and resilient growth.
      • Integrate – Nasdaq is on track to action its $140 million expanded net expense efficiency program by year-end, with approximately $130 million actioned as of the end of the second quarter. In the second quarter, Nasdaq surpassed the 3.3x gross leverage milestone that was set following the Adenza acquisition, achieving this milestone 16 months ahead of plan.
      • Innovate – Nasdaq continues to focus on innovating across the business. In July, Nasdaq Verafin announced the launch of its Agentic AI workforce. This suite of digital workers, now in beta testing, has the potential to address the most resource intensive anti-money laundering workflows. For example, when onboarded into a bank’s alert triage workflow, the Digital Sanctions Analyst automates the screening, documentation and acknowledgement processes, reducing alert review workload requiring human intervention by more than 80%. Beyond AI, Calypso announced a proof of concept that expands its industry-leading collateral management capabilities with digital assets. The use case demonstrates Nasdaq’s ability to integrate on-chain capabilities and help financial institutions manage collateral across asset classes in a more dynamic and efficient manner. Nasdaq became the exclusive distributor of Nasdaq Private Market’s Tape D(R) API in the second quarter to deliver real-time private market data and valuation insights to investors.
      • Accelerate – Nasdaq continued to deliver on its One Nasdaq strategy driving 7 cross-sell wins across Financial Technology in the quarter for a total of 26 cross-sells since the Adenza acquisition. Nasdaq remains on track to surpass $100 million in run-rate revenue from cross-sells by the end of 2027. At the end of the second quarter, cross-sells continued to account for over 15% of Financial Technology’s sales pipeline.

    Foreign exchange impact: In countries with currencies other than the U.S. dollar, revenue and expenses are translated using monthly average exchange rates.     Restructuring programs: In the fourth quarter of 2023, following the closing of the Adenza acquisition, our management approved, committed to and initiated a restructuring program to optimize our efficiencies as a combined organization.   • India and UK sign landmark trade deal: How CETA could benefit different sections of society

    India and the United Kingdom have inked a landmark Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), aimed at boosting bilateral trade and investment. The deal is expected to bring substantial benefits across various segments of Indian society.

    By promoting greater market access, technology exchange and investment flows, the agreement would create inclusive and sustainable growth opportunities.

    The CETA document outlines targeted advantages for farmers, fisherfolk, tribal communities, informal and formal workers, women entrepreneurs, youth, MSMEs and professionals.

    It emphasizes trade facilitation, skill development, value chain integration and enhanced mobility. CETA would act as a vehicle for equitable growth, rural upliftment and greater global integration of India’s diverse economic stakeholders.

    Indian farming communities stand to gain from easier access to the UK market and more opportunities to sell their produce due to tariff elimination.

    Among other concessions, the UK will liberalise access, effective from the date of implementation, for a range of Indian agricultural and food products, including meats, dairy, tea, coffee, spices, fruits, vegetables, fruit juices, and processed foods. By unlocking preferential access to the UK’s USD 63.4 billion agricultural market, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) gives Indian farmers a direct route to a high-value global customer base and achieve better returns for their goods.

    The CETA agreement takes fully into account the interests of Indian producers of sensitive agricultural products like dairy products, vegetables, apples, edible oils, oats, etc. by keeping those tariff lines under a sensitive list.

    The agricultural sector also benefits from the non-application of safeguard duties on Indian exports. Farmers will also benefit from commitments taken under the CETA to acknowledge traditional knowledge, especially in the patent process for genetic resources.

    The immediate removal of duties on Indian products from labour-intensive sectors such as gems and jewellery, textiles, leather and footwear, and food processing will not only boost employment but also directly benefit Indian workers in these industries.

    The CETA marks a significant step forward in advancing opportunities for women and youth across both nations. It includes progressive provisions designed to break down barriers and promote greater participation in international trade, digital innovation, and government procurement for women, youth, and under-represented groups.

    By fostering cooperation on gender-responsive standards, sharing best practices in financial services, and improving digital inclusion, the CETA ensures that women business owners, entrepreneurs, and young professionals can access new markets, acquire valuable information, and participate equitably in global, regional, and domestic economies.

    India’s youth, aged 15 to 29 and comprising approximately 27.3% of the population, are at the forefront of the country’s social and economic transformation. The CETA is poised to expand high-quality employment pathways for Indian youth by easing services market access, securing mutual recognition of professional qualifications and facilitating short-term mobility for talent in IT, healthcare, finance, and creative sectors.

    Lower tariffs on inputs and advanced manufacturing equipment can spur MSME supply-chain integration, creating skilled vocational jobs beyond metros. By fostering access to global value chains and enhancing competitiveness, CETA will empower Indian youth with essential skills and pathways to participate in international markets and future growth.

    SMEs are a vital part of India’s economy, contributing around 30.1% of India’s GDP in 2022-23 and 45.8% in India’s total export in 2024-25.

    SMEs benefit from various provisions of the CETA, including through provisions on faster processing at customs, agreements to recognise and facilitate digital systems and paperless trade, and a dedicated chapter to help SMEs. A contact point for SMEs will be established under the ambit of the CETA, facilitating communication and coordination benefiting SMEs.

    Indian businesses will gain a lot from this CETA. Other than lower tariffs and market access for Indian goods and services, the CETA offers ease of doing business with the UK through simplified and streamlined customs and trade facilitation processes from established systems like a Single Window and Authorised Economic Operator.

    Non-discriminatory treatment to Indian businesses and exporters when it comes to goods, services and government procurement, benefits Indian businesses in the UK market.

    Qualified professionals such as architects, engineers and medical professionals will be able to take advantage of the enhanced market access under the CETA and provide services in the UK. This is expected to create direct and indirect jobs through the expansion of service sectors.

    CETA also provides professionals with better mobility access to the UK. Independent professionals providing services such as R&D and computer services will be able to take advantage of these mobility commitments and provide their services in the UK. This will directly lead to job creation and better opportunities for a wide range of professionals, thereby increasing the quality of life.

    The CETA ensures comprehensive market access for goods across most sectors, fully addressing India’s export interests. India stands to benefit from the duty elimination of tariffs on approximately 99% of tariff lines, covering nearly 100% of the trade value.

    This opens up significant opportunities to boost bilateral trade between India and the UK.

    In key labor-intensive sectors, duties have been reduced to zero from previously high levels- up to 20% on marine products, 12% on textiles and clothing, 8% on chemicals, and 10% on base metals. Notably, in the processed food sector, tariffs on 99.7% of lines have been slashed from as high as 70% to zero, offering a major boost for Indian exporters.

    The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between India and the United Kingdom is poised to significantly enhance the competitiveness of India’s fishery and aquaculture sector, which accounts for 7.96% of global fish production and supports the livelihoods of approximately 28 million individuals.

    By eliminating tariffs and providing preferential access to the USD 3 billion fisheries market of the UK, the CETA directly benefits Indian seafood exporters, particularly those supplying high-demand products such as shrimp and other seafood.

    The enhanced market access is set to boost exports, which will directly benefit Indian fishermen of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, and Maharashtra.

    Overall, the CETA will not only strengthen India’s fisheries exports but also contribute to the welfare and livelihoods of fishermen, promote coastal economic development, and enhance the competitiveness of the Indian fisheries sector on the global stage. Through this agreement, India strengthens not only its seafood exports but also its commitment to inclusive and equitable trade.

    UK-India Technology Security Initiative – Anniversary Statement

    Statement on the one-year anniversary of the landmark UK-India Technology Security Initiative

    On the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the landmark UK-India Technology Security Initiative (TSI), the UK and India reaffirmed their shared commitment to harness frontier technologies to drive economic growth and strengthen national security.

    Both parties welcomed the Initiative’s achievements to date and underscored the transformative potential of the TSI to deliver cutting-edge innovations and generate investment across the entire technology value chain.

    The TSI has already enabled industry, academia and government to deliver new strategic opportunities. Over the past year, both sides have:

    • Launched a flagship £7 million joint research programme on Future Telecoms in 2024 to support joint Open RAN and 5G/6G testbed development.
    • Formalised collaboration between key telecoms lab facilities – India’s Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and the UK’s Smart RAN Open Network Interoperability Centre (SONIC) for bilateral collaboration in telecom innovation, testing and emerging technology.
    • Accelerated development in responsible and trustworthy AI, including through the first UK-India Conference on AI opportunities, held in Bengaluru in February 2025.
    • Completed the successful first phase of the world’s first UK-India Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory. Phase Two, supported by £1.8 million of new funding, will deliver the world’s largest digital data infrastructure on the critical minerals value chain and establish a new satellite campus at the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad.
    • Strengthened our partnership in FEMTECH – Women-Orientated Health Tech by collaboration between National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
    • Initiated several new partnerships between private sector from both sides in the fields of Telecoms, Critical Minerals, Advanced Materials and AI.

    To further our strategic collaboration, both sides will:

    • Harness together, the benefits of the global AI revolution and boost economic growth through a UK-India joint centre for AI that will promote trusted real world AI innovations and widespread adoption.
    • Advance next generation, secure-by-design telecommunications through joint research, development and innovation, strategically collaborating on advanced connectivity and cyber resilience. Establish an India-UK Connectivity and Innovation Centre to pioneer AI-driven telecoms, non-terrestrial networks and secure 5G and 6G. Work together through international fora like ITU and 3GPP for 6G.
    • Secure resilient and sustainable critical mineral supply chains to power the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Establish a UK-India Critical Minerals Guild to transform financing standards and innovation. Together, the two sides will prioritise processing, R&D, recycling, managing risk to supply chains, market development etc. and will champion circular economy principles and advance traceability.
    • Use the UK-India biotechnology partnership to unlock the potential in biofoundries, bioprinting, biomanufacturing, bio-based materials, advanced biosciences and drive innovation across health, clean energy and sustainable agriculture. Explore the possibility of setting up a UK-India Biotechnology Accelerator.

    The UK and India continue to work together across other TSI commitments including the collaboration on Graphene and 2D Materials Technology.
    In recognition of the TSI’s success, the two leaders agreed to expand the TSI into new frontier domains, particularly to unlock engagement on futuristic, secure and strategic technologies. This expansion will further align UK and Indian national security priorities and unlock new opportunities for industry and researchers.

    Both parties called on industry, including start-ups and academia to further catalyse the UK-India technology partnership and to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the TSI.
