  • MIL-OSI Global: Why are India and Pakistan on the brink of war and how dangerous is the situation? An expert explains

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Natasha Lindstaedt, Professor in the Department of Government, University of Essex

India has launched military strikes against a number of sites in Pakistan and Pakistan’s side of the disputed region of Kashmir, reportedly killing 26 people and injuring dozens more. India claimed the attacks were on terrorist infrastructure, but Pakistan denied this, and said these were civilians.

India says another ten people on the Indian side of the Kashmir region have been killed by shelling from Pakistan in the same period.

The exchange comes two weeks after a terrorist attack in Kashmir killed 26 people. The group Resistance Front (TRF), which India argues is a proxy for the Pakistani-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.

India claimed that Pakistan had indirectly supported the terrorist attack, but Pakistan vehemently denies this.

The escalating conflict between two of the world’s major military powers has the potential to destablise Asia and beyond. Already, many countries around the world, including the UK, France and Russia, have made public their concerns about what happens next.

Sign up to receive our weekly World Affairs Briefing newsletter from The Conversation UK. Every Thursday we’ll bring you expert analysis of the big stories in international relations.

How do India and Pakistan’s militaries compare?

India is ranked as one of the world’s top five military nations by Military Watch magazine and Pakistan is ranked ninth. Both countries have nuclear weapons.

Overall, India is considered to have the military edge with a bigger and more modern military force, while Pakistan has a smaller and more agile force that has been primarily focused on defensive and covert activities.

While neither country has used nuclear weapons in a conflict, there are always concerns that this norm may be broken. Both countries are nuclear powers with India holding 180 nuclear warheads, and Pakistan possessing about 170.

Though India has a “no first use” policy, which it claims means the country would never use nuclear weapons first, there have been signs it is reconsidering this policy since 2019.

Pakistan has never declared a no first use policy and argues that tactical nuclear weapons are important to countering India’s larger conventional forces.

    Details of Indian air strikes.

The concern is that even if a small nuclear exchange were to take place between the two countries, it could kill up to 20 million people in a matter of days.

Why are the countries fighting over Kashmir?

Kashmir has been a source of tension and conflict even before India and Pakistan gained independence from the British empire in 1947. Originally the Muslim-majority Kashmir was free to accede to either India or Pakistan.

While the local ruler (maharaja), Hari Singh, originally wanted Kashmir to be independent, he eventually sided with India, leading to a conflict in 1947. This resulted in a UN-mediated ceasefire in 1949 and agreement that Kashmir would be controlled partly by Pakistan and partly by India, splitl along what’s known as the Line of Surveillance (or Line of Control).

As Kashmir is rich in minerals such as borax, sapphire, graphite, marble, gypsum and lithium, the region is strategically important. It is also culturally and historically important to both Pakistan and India.

Due to the region’s significance and disagreement over sovereignty, multiple conflicts have taken place over Kashmir, with wars erupting in 1965 and 1999. Tensions were renewed in 2016, after 19 Indian soldiers were killed in Uri, on the Indian side of Kashmir. India responded by launching “surgical strikes” across the Line of Control, targeting alleged militant bases.

Then in 2019, a bombing in Pulwama (again part of the Indian-administered Kashmir) that killed more than 40 Indian paramilitary personnel led to Indian airstrikes in Balakot which borders Kashmir. This was the first action inside Pakistan since the Indian-Pakistani conflict in 1971 and again led to retaliatory raids from Pakistan and a brief aerial conflict.

These past conflicts never intensified further in part because India applied a massive diplomatic pressure campaign on the US, the UK and Pakistan, warning against escalation, while Pakistan showed a willingness to back down. Both sides as nuclear powers (India gained nuclear weapons in 1974 and Pakistan in 1998) had an understanding that escalating to full-scale war would be incredibly risky.

    What will happen next?

The question is whether or not cooler heads will prevail this time. The strikes by India, part of Operation Sinhoor, were met with mass approval across many political lines in India, with both the ruling Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) and the opposition Congress party voicing their support for the operation.

This helps Modi gain more backing, at a time when his popularity has been falling. Modi and the BJP suffered a shocking result in the 2024 election, losing 63 seats out of 543 seats and falling short of a majority in the Lok Sabha (lower house of parliament).

Under Modi, India has been rapidly becoming more autocratic, another source of concern as such countries are more likely to take risks when it comes to conflict. As power becomes increasingly personalised and dissent is repressed, would-be autocrats may be more likely to take on bold moves to garner more public and elite support.

Pakistan may also have reason to respond with more force to India’s recent attack than in the past. Pakistan’s powerful military has often stoked fears of a conflict with India to justify its enormous military budget. Regardless of the outcome, it needs a success to sell to its domestic audience.

Pakistan has been de facto led by its military for decades, which also makes it more likely to engage in conflict. In spite of intervals of civilian rule, the military has always held a lot of power, and in contrast to India (where there is a wider role for a civilian minister of defence), the Pakistani military has more influence over nuclear and security policy.

Both military regimes and multi-party autocracies may see conflict as a way of gaining legitimacy, particularly if both regimes think their political support is unravelling.

This most recent escalation is also significant because it is the first time in the Kashmir conflict that India has struck at Punjab, considered the heart of Pakistan. Pakistan will face internal pressure to respond, settle the score and restore deterrence.

Both sides have been resolute in not losing an inch of territory. The question is how quickly diplomatic pressure can work. Neither India nor Pakistan are engaged in security dialogue, and there is no bilateral crisis management mechanisms in place.

Further complicating matters is that the US’s role as a crisis manager in south Asia has diminished. Under Donald Trump, Washington cannot be counted on. This all makes deescalating this conflict much more difficult.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: MHRA approves teprotumumab as the first UK treatment for adults with moderate to severe Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)

Source: United Kingdom – Government Statements

    Press release

MHRA approves teprotumumab as the first UK treatment for adults with moderate to severe Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)

As with all products, the MHRA will keep its safety under close review.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has today, 7 May 2025, approved teprotumumab (Tepezza). This is the first medicine to be licensed in the UK for adult patients with moderate to severe Thyroid Eye Disease (TED).

TED is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the muscles and fat around the eyes.  In TED, the immune system activates a protein called IGF-1R, causing inflammation and swelling in these tissues. Tepezza is designed to bind to IGF-1R to block its activation and signalling.

This medicine is administered via an intravenous drip directly into a vein by a healthcare professional.

Julian Beach, MHRA Interim Executive Director of Healthcare Quality and Access, said:

“Patient safety is our top priority. I am pleased to confirm the approval of teprotumumab, for the treatment of severe Thyroid Eye Disease.

“We’re assured that the appropriate regulatory standards of safety, quality and effectiveness for the approval of this new treatment have been met.

“As with all products, we will keep its safety under close review.”

Teprotumumab has been studied in 287 patients with thyroid eye disease in four clinical trials. All patients in these trials were 18 years or older. In all studies, patients received teprotumumab infusions every 3 weeks for a total of 8 infusions.

In the four studies patients were randomised to receive either teprotumumab or placebo. The patients who received teprotumumab demonstrated a greater reduction in eye protrusion and double vision compared to people .

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects in some people. Serious side effects can include high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia), infusion related reactions, deafness, or worsening of inflammatory bowel disease.

Other side effects that may affect up to 1 in 10 people include headache, diarrhoea, nausea, hair loss, muscle spasms and fatigue.

Tepezza must not be used in patients if they are pregnant as it may cause damage to the unborn baby.

Anyone who suspects they are having a side effect from this medicine should talk to their doctor, pharmacist or nurse and report it directly to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, either through the website (https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/) or by searching the Google Play or Apple App stores for MHRA Yellow Card.

The UK will continue to pay tribute to the victims of war by pressing for a just and lasting peace in response to conflicts around the world: UK Statement at the UN General Assembly

Statement by Ambassador James Kariuki, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, at the UN General Assembly meeting on the Eightieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Today, we remember the enormous contributions and sacrifices made, and honour the lives lost, in pursuit of peace and security 80 years ago.

Allied forces, united in their mission to liberate Europe from Nazi oppression, were victorious.

But we must never forget the tragic human cost of the Second World War.

Over 70 million lives lost around the world.

And as the world wars begin to fade from living memory, we must ensure the stories of those who lived through and fought in them are remembered by generations to come.

This organisation was founded in the wake of that conflict, to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, underpinned by a Charter which united the world with the aim of maintaining international peace and security, reaffirming our shared faith in Human Rights, and promoting development.

The United Kingdom remains deeply committed to those principles and to the UN Charter.

In the UN’s 80th year, our shared mission is more important than ever.

The world faces the highest number of conflicts globally since the UN’s inception.

    The human costs are rising.

In Europe, security is once again threatened by blatant disrespect for the principles of sovereign equality of States and respect for territorial integrity.

These principles matter for all states.

President, my grandfather served as a British Army officer in France and in Italy during the Second World War. Decades later, even at the height of the Cold War, he spoke warmly of the Soviet forces he had fought alongside to defeat fascism.

Russia’s claims that the Ukrainian government is akin to the regime of the German Nazis is false and malicious propaganda that insults the memory of the Soviet forces who fought and died during the Second World War.

We were called here today for one solemn purpose: to commemorate the victims of the Second World War.

The fact that Russia sees fit to use this meeting to peddle blatant disinformation about is shameful, but it will not distract us.

As my Prime Minister said, this is a time to celebrate hard-won peace, honour the memory of those who lost their lives and remember the sacrifices made by so many to secure our freedom.

The United Kingdom will continue to pay tribute to the victims of war by pressing for a just and lasting peace in response to conflicts around the world.

As we join together today, we encourage all Member States to consider this anniversary a stark reminder that peace cannot be taken for granted.

We must all redouble our efforts to bring about the peace and security the people of the world need and which they deserve.

Moscow, May 7 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the international community to unswervingly uphold the historical truth about World War II, resolutely safeguard the post-war international order, and firmly uphold international justice and equality.

The Chinese leader made the call in an opinion piece published Wednesday by Rossiyskaya Gazeta ahead of his arrival in Russia on a state visit and participation in celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War.

He noted that China and the Soviet Union became the most reliable supports in the fight against militaristic Japan and Nazi Germany, and made a decisive contribution to the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War.

Attempts to distort historical facts about World War II and deny its results, and discredit the historical feats of China and the Soviet Union are doomed to failure, Xi Jinping added.

The Chinese leader noted that the establishment of the UN was perhaps the most important decision made by the world community since the end of World War II. The more complex the international situation becomes, the more important it is to protect and ensure the authority of the UN, firmly defend the international system, the core of which remains the UN, the world order based on international law and the basic norms of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, consistently promote the formation of an equal and orderly multipolar world, accessible and inclusive economic globalization, the article says.

Xi Jinping also called on the international community to adhere to the principles of “dialogue instead of confrontation, partnership instead of self-interested blocs, and mutual benefit instead of a zero-sum game.”

It is necessary to follow the path of true multilateralism, take into account the rational interests of various parties, and ensure international rules and order, the article says. –0–

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: 7 May 2025 Departmental update Global Disability Summit marks pivotal moment in advancing health for all

    Source: World Health Organisation

Inclusion must be a right and it should not be negotiable. WHO’s position starts from that and WHO has been working on disability for many years.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus / WHO Director-General

Leaders, advocates and experts from across the globe gathered in Berlin from 2–3 April 2025 for the Global Disability Summit to discuss the critical role that disability inclusion plays in building a more sustainable future.

The Summit, organized by the Governments of Germany and Jordan in collaboration with the International Disability Alliance, marked a pivotal moment in global health efforts to advance health equity for all.

The World Health Organization (WHO) was well represented at the Summit, as demonstrated by the participation of Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, and Darryl Barrett, Technical Lead of the WHO Disability Programme.

    Key outcomes from the Summit

    • Announcement of a WHO Global Initiative on Health Equity for Persons with Disabilities

Dr Tedros announced the launch of a WHO Global Initiative on Health Equity for Persons with Disabilities. The Initiative will act as an essential mechanism to coordinate and prioritize collaborative efforts for better health for persons with disabilities. It will transform health systems and guide countries in developing and implementing policies that prioritize their health needs.

    • Strategic discussions to drive progress

The Summit enabled crucial discussions between WHO and various partners, especially persons with disabilities and their representative organizations, on the most efficient ways to mainstream disability inclusion in health practices and systems. Partners proposed innovative strategies to leverage resources, expertise and networks to drive progress in health equity for persons with disabilities. The insights gained from the discussions will shape the objectives and structure of the global initiative, ensuring it effectively addresses the needs of persons with disabilities.

    • High-level commitments

The Summit concluded with over 800 commitments made by countries and partners at all levels to promote disability inclusion. WHO endorsed the Amman-Berlin Declaration on Global Disability Inclusion and will continue to work with governments, organizations and stakeholders to advance disability inclusion in international development and humanitarian action. The health-related commitments, published on the Summit’s website, will serve as a roadmap to create more inclusive health systems.

    The way forward

The Summit was a powerful platform that catalysed an unprecedented movement for a more inclusive health sector driven by and for persons with disabilities.

WHO will build on the conversations initiated with disability advocates and health sector stakeholders, and work actively towards the launch of the global initiative on health equity for persons with disabilities.

Dr Tedros added, “Universal health coverage cannot happen without including the 1.3 billion [persons with disabilities globally]. All countries have to mainstream inclusion in their policies. So that’s what we’re pushing for, and we will continue to do our best.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Vcitory Day for World War II, 2025

    US Senate News:

    Source: The White House
class=”has-text-align-center”>BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
    A PROCLAMATION
Today, our Nation proudly commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Allied Powers’ triumph over national socialism and fascism, and the end of World War II in Europe — one of the most epic victories for forces of freedom in the history of the world.  On this Victory Day for World War II, we celebrate the unmatched might, strength, and power of the American Armed Forces, and we commit to protecting our sacred birthright of liberty against all threats, foreign and domestic. In the wake of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States righteously entered the fray of what would become the apex of the eternal battle between good and evil.  After nearly 4 years of the darkest and bloodiest chapters ever recorded in human history, more than 250,000 Americans lost their lives in the fight against the Nazi regime.  Today and every day, we pay tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Nation, their liberty, and the survival of Western civilization.  Without the sacrifice of our American soldiers, this war would not have been won, and our world today would look drastically different.May 8, 1945 marks the Allies’ acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender — the beginning of the end of years of long, gruesome, and brutal warfare.  The millions of souls senselessly lost serve as a reminder of why we must pursue peace through strength.  I remain steadfastly devoted to stopping the years of endless foreign wars and preventing the further loss of lives.  As I stated during my Inaugural Address, we will measure our success not only by the battles we win but also by the wars we end — and my proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker. As we commemorate Victory Day for World War II, we offer our unending thanks to every patriot from the Greatest Generation who left behind his home and family to fight for our freedom in distant lands.  We honor the memories of all those who perished.  Above all, we renew our commitment to keeping America and the entire world safe, secure, prosperous, and free.NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 8, 2025, as a day in celebration of Victory Day for World War II.IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventh day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty‑five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.                                 DONALD J. TRUMP

  • MIL-OSI Global: Culture wars, political polarization and deepening inequality: the roots of Trumpism

Source: The Conversation – France – By Jérôme Viala-Gaudefroy, Spécialiste de la politique américaine, Sciences Po

More than 100 days into his return to the White House, the conclusion is stark: Donald Trump is no longer the same president he was during his first term. His familiar nationalist and populist rhetoric is now openly paired with an authoritarian turn – one without precedent in US history. He has adopted a neo-imperial view of the economy, treating the global order as a zero-sum contest of winners and losers. In this worldview, cooperation gives way to domination: what matters is power and the accumulation of wealth.

Having withstood two impeachment procedures, numerous lawsuits and at least one assassination attempt, Trump now governs with what can appear to be unchecked authority. To his followers, he has become a hero, a martyr – almost a messianic figure. He no longer sees democracy as a framework to be honoured, but as a tool to legitimize his hold on power. His decisive electoral victory now serves as a mandate to cast aside institutional limits.

A weekly e-mail in English featuring expertise from scholars and researchers. It provides an introduction to the diversity of research coming out of the continent and considers some of the key issues facing European countries. Get the newsletter!

Three key features define his style of governance: a radical centralization of executive power grounded in the theory of the “unitary executive”; the politicization of the Department of Justice, used as a weapon against rivals; and the manipulation of federal authority to target cultural, media and educational institutions. His playbook is chaos: unsettle opponents, dominate the media narrative and blur the boundaries of democratic norms. Impulsive and reactionary, Trump often governs in response to Fox News segments or trending posts on Truth Social. Instability has become a strategic tool.

But Trump is not a historical anomaly. While his 2016 victory may have seemed unlikely, his re-election reflects a deeper, long-term transformation rooted in the post-Cold War era.

From an external to an internal enemy

The collapse of the USSR – a structuring external enemy – redirected political confrontation toward the designation of an internal enemy. The culture war has become the dominant ideological battleground, driven by two closely linked forces. On one side, a religious radicalization led by nationalist Christian movements – such as the New Apostolic Reformation – seeks to roll back social progress and promote the vision of an outright theocracy. On the other, growing racial anxiety is fueled by fears of white demographic decline and resistance to civil rights gains.

The commentator Pat Buchanan saw it coming as early as the 1990s. Speaking at the 1992 Republican National Convention, he warned: “There is a cultural war going on for the soul of America… as critical as the Cold War itself.” Too radical for his time, Buchanan championed a white, Christian, conservative US hostile to cosmopolitan elites. Though marginalized then, his ideas laid the groundwork for what would become Trumpism.

Newt Gingrich, who served as Speaker of the House from 1995 to 1999, played a pivotal role in reshaping both the Republican party and US politics. A Republican group he chaired famously distributed a pamphlet to Republican candidates titled “Language: A Key Mechanism of Control”, advising them to use uplifting language to describe themselves, and inflammatory terms like “corrupt”, “immoral” and “traitor” to describe their opponents. This aggressive rhetoric redefined political rivals as enemies to be defeated – helping pave the way for a right-wing politics in which winning trumps democratic norms.

At the same time, the rise of a new conservative media ecosystem intensified polarization. The launch of Fox News in 1996, the growth of right-wing talk radio shows like Rush Limbaugh’s and the later explosion of social media gave the US right powerful tools to shape and radicalize public opinion. Today, algorithm-driven information bubbles trap citizens in alternate realities, where misinformation and outrage drown out reasoned debate. This has deepened polarization and fractured society as a whole.

    Channeling anger

This ideological and media realignment has unfolded alongside a broader crisis: the unraveling of the post-Cold War neoliberal consensus. Promises of shared prosperity have been replaced by deindustrialization, deepening inequality and widespread resentment. Successive traumas – from 9/11 and the 2008 financial crash to the Covid-19 pandemic – and foreign wars without real victories have eroded public trust in the establishment.

Trump channels this anger. He offers a vision of a restored and idealized America, a rollback of recent social gains, and a reassertion of national identity grounded in religion and race. His populism is not a coherent ideology but an emotional response – born of perceived injustice, humiliation and loss.

Trump is more than a symptom of America’s democratic crisis: he is its most vivid manifestation. He embodies the legacy of the 1990s – a foundational decade of identity grievance, culture wars and media deregulation. Viewed as a political outsider, he has never been judged as a traditional politician, but rather embraced, by some, as the archetypal “self-made man” – a successful businessman and reality TV celebrity.

His rhetoric – transgressive, provocative and often cruel – gives voice to what had been repressed. The humiliation of opponents becomes part of the performance. For his supporters, it’s exhilarating. It breaks taboos, flouts political correctness and feeds the fantasy of reclaiming a lost America.

And he’s no longer alone. With the vocal support of economic and tech elites like Elon Musk – now a central figure in the radicalized right on X – Trumpism has entered a new phase. Together, they’ve outlined a new kind of authoritarian, cultural and digital power, where influence matters more than institutions.

The US re-elected not just a man, but a style, an era and a worldview built on dominance, disruption and disdain for rules. Still, history is unwritten: intoxicated by hubris and undermined by incompetence, Trumpism may yet crash into the wall of reality – with consequences far beyond America’s borders.

BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) — China appreciates the Spanish government’s strong focus on developing relations with China and its consistent promotion of practical cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Wednesday.

The Chinese diplomat made this statement at a regular briefing, commenting at the request of one of the journalists on the recently published Spanish Foreign Policy Strategy for 2025-2028, which, in particular, emphasizes the need to deepen Spanish-Chinese relations of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Parliament marks 80th anniversary of the end of World War II

    Source: European Union 2

On Wednesday, the European Parliament marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe in a ceremony in plenary with three veterans.

“Eighty years after the guns fell silent across Europe, we honour the courage of those who fought, and the sacrifice of those who fell. We remember not just the end of a war, but the birth of our Union. The most powerful tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in this war lies not only in remembrance, but in resolve. In our determination to stand together and say, clearly and firmly: never again,” EP President Metsola said.

European Council President António Costa thanked the veterans for their “sacrifice and commitment to peace”, regretting that, today, “we cannot celebrate peace in peace”, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Mr Costa encouraged the EU member states and their partners to stay united in the face of the Russian aggressor, as the best way to pay homage to those who gave their lives 80 years ago defending freedom. Finally, he reminded European citizens that “peace is a heritage, but also a responsibility”.

    Speeches by veterans of war

Three veterans of the war – Mr Robert Chot, a 102-year-old Belgian veteran of the Battle of the Ardennes; Mr Janusz Komorowski a Polish veteran of the liberation of Poland and now 96 years old; and Mr Janusz Maksymowicz, also Polish and now 95 years old, who participated in the Warsaw Uprising – addressed MEPs.

Belgian war veteran Robert Chot said: “80 years ago, the guns fell silent, bringing an end to a terrible battle that caused millions of deaths in Europe and elsewhere. If today we are still living in peace, it is thanks to you and the countries you represent”. Peace is always uncertain, he added. “There are always clouds hanging over us. Let us do what is necessary to ensure that peace endures in Europe”, he declared.

Mr Janusz Komorowski talked about the difficult destiny of Poles who were fighting for freedom and independence and for the right of the Polish nation to exist, in Poland, abroad and during the Warsaw uprising in 1944. “They gave their lives for the freedom of other nations too, in the hope that the brutal force of the peace wreckers would be broken forever. Today, I want to thank that wartime generation, but also the European Parliament for becoming a beacon of peace, freedom and democracy, and for steadfastly defending these values”, he concluded.

Mr Janusz Maksymowicz stressed that the fight for freedom and values had clearly not ended but had taken on new forms. “We know how ruthless ideologies that divide people and nations can be. That is why today we say with full conviction: community is strength. A community of nations that respects the European traditions and cultures of all people who want to live in peace.”

The ceremony was brought to a close with a musical performance of the European anthem by a soprano accompanied by a string ensemble.

Ahead of the plenary event, Presidents Metsola and Costa attended a flag raising and wreath laying ceremony outside of the Parliament building in Strasbourg.

Coventry Dementia Partnership Hub has secured extra support from the National Lottery Fund to help fund a café.

The Hub opened two years ago and the Forget Me Not Café has played an integral part in offering a warm welcome to regulars impacted by Dementia and visitors arriving at the Hub for the first time.

The Hub has received more than £280,000 over the next five years and everyone involved in the Dementia Hub are delighted at the news.

The Holbrooks based Hub helps to support around 4,000 people throughout the year and provides a wide range of social activities and advice sessions that benefits both people experiencing Dementia and their carers.

The lottery funding will fund two-café coordinators for five years. The two café co-ordinators run the café that leads into the social space. The social space has become a safe and welcoming space for people with dementia and carers. The social space has information drop-in sessions run by various partners as well as user led sessions and exercise groups.

Coventry Dementia Partnership Hub was opened in July 2023.

Councillor Linda Bigham, Cabinet Member for Adult Services at Coventry City Council, said: “The Coventry Dementia Partnership Hub is a wonderful venue that I have visited many times. It supports individuals to continue to live as independently as possible in their homes whilst maintaining their safety and good quality of life.

“The café is at the heart of the Hub, which adds to a fantastic resource for families and carers to get the support, respite and helps to reduce any stigma of dementia within communities.

“There is a very special atmosphere when you go into the Hub reflecting the love and compassion that people experience there. The café co-ordinators are wonderful and know and talk to everyone who comes to the hub.

“We are all very grateful for the generous support from the National Lottery Fund. It will help make a big difference to people affected by Dementia.”

The Hub links with many other agencies external services which all can offer advice, guidance and support – including the Carers Trust, Telecare Services Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust, Admiral Nurses and the Police.

Coventry City Council (CCC) is one of the lead partners of the Coventry Dementia Partnership Hub (CDPH).

CDPH is delivered formally alongside partner organisations, with many others delivering sessions. CDPH serves as a central resource for Coventry’s diverse communities, offering a safe environment where those with dementia can engage in activities that enrich their lives.

The hub also offers much-needed respite and peace of mind for carers, knowing their loved ones are supported and it provides carers with the opportunity to take a step back and consider their own needs and wants.

It also supports individuals with a support network of people with similar lived experiences, who are trying to navigate the ups and downs of the dementia journey and can provide expertise and sessions from well-trained, experienced, and knowledgeable staff.

  • MIL-OSI Global: The King’s speech: The world will be watching when Charles opens Canada’s Parliament

Source: The Conversation – Canada – By Justin Vovk, European Royal History Reseacher, McMaster University

Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited King Charles to embark upon a Royal Visit to Canada and open the new session of Parliament on May 27.

The visit comes at a significant moment in Canadian history. Carney has just had his first meeting with Donald Trump, pushing back unequivocally against the American president’s continuing calls for Canada to become the 51st state.

In their Oval Office news conference, Trump once again declared his desire to erase “the artificially drawn line” separating the U.S. and Canada and to annex Canada, as Carney made clear that would never happen.

Mark Carney tells Donald Trump ‘Canada is not for sale’ in a high-stakes Oval Office meeting

At the same time, Trump has been looking to reshape the global economic order through the use of tariffs on imported goods. Even though Canadians are fighting back with consumer and travel boycotts, many are also worrying about the future due to Trump’s actions.

Amid this turmoil, the King’s timely visit could be a powerful show of support for Canadians, whose identity has often wilted in the shadow of its powerful but formerly protective American neighbour. The presence of the King will undoubtedly generate global attention, which could provide reassurances to Canadians that they’re not alone.

Delivering the Speech from the Throne

Charles is King of Canada and the country’s official head of state. This will be his 20th trip to Canada, but his first since becoming King in September 2022.

In day-to-day government business, his duties are carried out by the Governor General. These include opening Parliament and delivering the Speech from the Throne, which outlines the government’s agenda.

The King’s visit will mark the first time the sovereign has personally delivered the Speech from the Throne since Queen Elizabeth did so in 1957. She also opened a session of Canada’s 30th Parliament in 1977.

Canada has maintained close ties with the United Kingdom. It still uses the Westminster parliamentary system. But Canada has also worked to establish its own national identity.

In 1982, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau repatriated Canada’s Constitution. This replaced the British North America Act and established Canada’s full political independence, a process that began with Confederation in 1867.

    Signals of support to Canada

Royal Visits are one of the monarchy’s most effective tools for promoting international relations. In Charles’s recent visit to Italy, he even made a point of honouring Canada.

This upcoming visit is expected to highlight Canada’s identity separate from the United States. It will give Charles the opportunity to remind everyone of the Crown’s place at the heart of Canadian sovereignty and our constitutional relationship with monarchy. This is an image that Charles has been eager to foster since becoming King in 2022 following the death of his mother and amid waning enthusiasm for the monarchy in some Commonwealth countries.

The King cannot make political statements — at least, not without the say-so of the prime minister. After meeting with Justin Trudeau in March before he was replaced by Carney as prime minister, Charles signalled his support for Canadian sovereignty through a series of subtle but important gestures.

    Read more:
How King Charles is sending Canada subtle signals of support amid Trump’s threats

He presented a ceremonial sword to the Usher of the Black Rod — one of the Canadian Senate’s senior ceremonial officers. A week later, Charles planted a red maple at Buckingham Palace to commemorate the late Queen Elizabeth’s support for international forestry. He even wore Canadian military insignia on his admiral’s uniform during a public inspection of a British aircraft carrier.

    Commonwealth ties

The King’s visit could also reinvigorate Canada’s ties to the Commonwealth.

Canada has long maintained positive relations with the other Commonwealth countries through shared culture, military action and economic support. This Royal Visit could solidify the beneficial role of the Crown and of the Commonwealth for Canada as it seeks to assert its sovereignty and broaden its international economic ties in the face of American tariffs.

Many in Canada and around the world will be watching and listening to the King’s speech when he opens Parliament on May 27.

It is unlikely there will be any direct references to Trump’s 51st state threats or to the president himself. But its symbolic significance could reaffirm Canada’s place on the world stage. • MIL-OSI Africa: Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy, Power to Deliver Keynote at Invest in African Energy (IAE) 2025

Source: Africa Press Organisation – English (2) – Report:

    PARIS, France, May 7, 2025/APO Group/ —

The Invest in African Energy (IAE) 2025 Forum is pleased to announce that Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Power Development, July Moyo, will deliver a keynote address at the event in Paris next month, highlighting national energy priorities and emerging investment opportunities. His participation marks a strategic moment for Zimbabwe as the country positions its energy sector for a new wave of private sector-led growth.

Minister Moyo’s participation follows Zimbabwe’s recent international efforts to attract investment into its energy sector, including high-level engagements aimed at outlining a clear roadmap for modernization and highlighting the essential role of private capital in addressing infrastructure deficits. With a large portion of the population still lacking access to electricity and power demand continuing to outpace supply, Zimbabwe is actively seeking strategic partnerships to deliver more reliable, sustainable and diversified energy solutions.

IAE 2025 (https://apo-opa.co/4d2nKO6is an exclusive forum designed to facilitate investment between African energy markets and global investors. Taking place May 13-14, 2025 in Paris, the event offers delegates two days of intensive engagement with industry experts, project developers, investors and policymakers. For more information, please visit www.Invest-Africa-Energy.com. To sponsor or participate as a delegate, please contact sales@energycapitalpower.com.

To meet both near-term and long-term goals, the government is pursuing a dual-track approach: restarting coal-fired power plants to stabilize domestic supply in the short term, while simultaneously accelerating investment in renewable energy. Solar and wind projects are at the forefront of Zimbabwe’s energy strategy, with plans to develop large-scale solar farms and export power to neighboring countries. In partnership with Zambia, Zimbabwe is exploring floating solar developments on Lake Kariba – backed by a recent $250 million facility from the African Export-Import Bank to develop a 250 MW project by mid-2026 – signaling a shift toward innovative, climate-resilient infrastructure.

Minister Moyo’s keynote will outline current investment-ready opportunities in power generation, transmission and off-grid electrification, as well as the regulatory and policy reforms designed to attract independent power producers and foreign capital. His presence reinforces Zimbabwe’s commitment to working with global stakeholders to transform its energy landscape and foster long-term energy security. Moreover, Zimbabwe’s participation at IAE 2025 reflects the forum’s broader mission of connecting African energy markets with international financiers, developers and strategic partners.

  • MIL-OSI: UPDATE – Abundance Energy, SOLRITE Energy, and sonnen Develop Residential Battery-Enabled Virtual Power Plants in Texas

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga., May 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Abundance Energy, sonnen, SOLRITE Energy, and Energywell Technology Licensing, LLC (“Energywell”) are joining forces to power the future of energy through the development of behind-the-meter, battery-enabled Virtual Power Plants (“VPP”) in Texas.

The collaboration empowers Abundance Energy customers to use their sonnenConnect home batteries to support grid stability, ensure reliable energy delivery, and lower electricity costs while driving the development of smart, sustainable energy solutions.

Enabled by SOLRITE Energy’s innovative virtual power plant purchase agreement (VPA) financing model, participants can install solar panels and sonnen battery systems at no upfront cost, lowering barriers to entry for this VPP program. sonnen and SOLRITE first introduced this novel VPA structure to the Texas market in January 2025.

Optimized through the integration of Energywell’s Proton platform with sonnen’s advanced control technology, each battery is continuously managed in response to market price signals, customer usage, and solar generation. Networked together, these batteries create a VPP, dynamically balancing energy supply and demand to maximize value for both the grid and the customer. Under the VPA financing model, SOLRITE owns and manages all the customer solar and sonnen energy storage systems and customers in turn receive the benefit of low energy costs and reliable back-up power.

“Our mission is to empower homeowners with smarter, more sustainable energy solutions,” said Thomas Mandry, CEO of Abundance Energy. “By combining sonnen’s best-in-class battery technology, Energywell’s market expertise through its Proton platform, and SOLRITE’s unique financing model, we are delivering an innovative VPP model that benefits both customers and the Texas grid.”

sonnen’s VPP technology intelligently manages energy supply and demand, ensuring stored solar or grid energy is strategically deployed when needed most. “Our VPP solutions enable customers to actively participate in the energy market while maintaining resilience in their homes,” said Blake Richetta, Chairman and CEO of sonnen. “With Abundance Energy, SOLRITE, and Energywell, we’re setting a new standard for residential energy management.”

“At SOLRITE, we believe financial innovation is key to unlocking the full potential of distributed energy,” said Regan George, CEO of SOLRITE Energy. “By eliminating upfront costs for solar and battery installations, we enable more homeowners to participate in this VPP program, delivering clean, reliable power to customers and adding value to the grid.”

Energywell’s Proton platform provides advanced forecasting and optimization tools to ensure batteries are dispatched in alignment with market opportunities. “The Texas energy landscape is evolving, and this partnership exemplifies the future of distributed energy,” said Michael Fallquist, CEO of Energywell. “By optimizing stored energy, we are reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions, building a smarter, cleaner, and more flexible grid.”

This VPP initiative aligns with Texas’ growing demand for resilient, customer-driven energy solutions and paves the way for further innovation in the residential energy sector.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: SNP must go further for people and planet

    Source: Scottish Greens

The SNP needs to show the ambition that our planet needs.

The SNP must go further for people and planet, says Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater.

Speaking in parliament today during a debate on the Scottish Government’s Programme for Government, Ms Slater called for action to rapidly reduce carbon emissions and put money in people’s pockets.

Opening her speech, Ms Slater said:

“The Scottish Government cannot be timid in its response to the challenges we face. We are facing profound threats and we need profound answers. It isn’t enough to try to do the same thing faster with ever-reducing resources.

“It is possible to build a fairer and greener Scotland, and we need a brave and bold Government to do this.

“Greener means rapidly reducing emissions and restoring our depleted nature. Fairer means redistributing wealth and opportunity so that homes are affordable, work pays fair wages, and ensures that our social security net allows everyone to live with dignity.

“It means practical measures to get money back in people’s pockets, and reduce poverty.”

Lorna went on to highlight the positives in the Programme for Government that Scottish Green policies and campaigning were central to securing.

    Ms Slater added:

“There are some good examples of these policies in this Programme for Government, including a permanent end to peak rail fares – a policy first brought in by the Scottish Greens in October 2023.”

Ms Slater used her speech to voice her concerns that the SNP are not going far enough with their commitments, seeming to be rolling back progressive policy instead.

    Ms Slater concluded:

“This Government does not always seem willing to do the hard things we need to do to build a fairer, greener Scotland and, frankly, we’re running out of tomorrows.

“Scotland is unfair for so many people and the Scottish Government could do more to make it fairer.

“For example, with greater ambition to deliver warmer homes and cheaper energy bills. Through proper rent controls which end rip-off rents and protect renters.

“We need an ambitious plan to effectively tax wealth in Scotland and invest in public services in communities.

“We need cheaper fares across all public transport, including capped bus fares.

“With the world and the climate in crisis, people across Scotland will want reassurances that the government is still on their side – and that can’t come from broken promises and scrapped commitments.

“The Scottish Government can do better than this, and the Scottish Greens will keep pushing them to do so.”

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Local restaurant found guilty of food safety offences after city council investigation

    Source: City of Stoke-on-Trent

    Published: Wednesday, 7th May 2025

The customer had ordered a meal from Ali’s Kitchen in Dresden after advising staff of their allergy.

A Stoke-on-Trent restaurant owner has been found guilty of food safety offences after a customer suffered an allergic reaction to nuts.

The customer had ordered a meal from Ali’s Kitchen in Dresden after advising staff of their allergy.

The restaurant agreed to make a meal free of nuts – but when it arrived, the customer suffered a reaction and had to use an EpiPen while an ambulance was called. The customer later made a full recovery.

Trading Standards officer from Stoke-on-Trent City Council launched a full investigation following a complaint about the incident. This included having the meal scientifically analysed to determine nuts were present.

Muhammed Aaban Aamir Ali, owner of Ali’s Kitchen in Dresden, has now pleaded guilty to a charge of supplying food that was unsafe to consume, as it contained traces of almond and nuts.

He was ordered to pay a £432 fine and £500 compensation to the victim, as well as £2,068 in prosecution costs.

Councillor Amjid Wazir OBE, cabinet member for city pride, enforcement and sustainability for Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “We are pleased the customer suffered no further ill-effects and was treated promptly.

“Our Trading Standards and Food Hygiene officers work tirelessly to ensure businesses follow the law and all appropriate guidelines.”

Trading Standards have recently completed a sampling project looking at undeclared allergens in takeaway meals.

They discovered that 50% of businesses do not make the necessary allergen declarations, particularly in relation to nuts or milk.

The council is now urging all businesses to ensure they have the correct procedures in place to correctly declare allergens to customers.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: New £4.5million project to boost NHS staffing

    Source: Anglia Ruskin University

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is to lead the East of England delivery of a £4.5million national project, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), to improve healthcare in rural and coastal areas as well as disadvantaged urban communities.

The five-year Allied Health Professions Workforce Research Partnership aims to improve patient care by ensuring staff such as paramedics, physiotherapists and radiographers are available when and where they are needed in NHS hospitals, community services, and general practice.

There are 14 different allied health professions, providing specialist emergency, diagnostics, and treatment services from birth to end of life. After nurses and doctors, they are the third largest workforce in the NHS.

The most recent figures put the East of England’s NHS unfilled vacancy rate at 8.1%, the highest in the country outside of London.

Professor Sally Fowler-Davis of ARU will work closely with partners across the nation including Sheffield Hallam University, University of Lincoln, University of Sheffield, University of Suffolk, University of Leeds and NHS East of England.

Researchers will collaborate in three regional hubs based in Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and the East of England to test new ways to address staffing problems in these areas and help them to best meet the needs of patients.

The project will bring together researchers and NHS partners, as well as patient and staff groups, to jointly design new ways of working that will improve patient care and help recruitment, retention and job satisfaction.

“There are parts of the East of England that face significant challenges in accessing healthcare due to their geographical isolation and limited resources, such as rural and coastal areas, where we know services struggle to recruit and retain staff.

“By enhancing the presence and support of allied health professionals in these areas, we aim to address these disparities and ensure that residents receive the high-quality care they deserve.

“This initiative is crucial for improving health outcomes and fostering a sense of community wellbeing. By investing in the recruitment and retention of skilled healthcare professionals in underserved areas, we can build a more resilient and equitable healthcare system that meets the needs of everyone, regardless of their location.”

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Commemorative plaque for Denis Law

Source: Scotland – City of Aberdeen

Scotland’s only winner of the prestigious footballing award Ballon d’Or Denis Law is to be honoured with a commemorative plaque in the area he grew up in Aberdeen.

Denis Law CBE was born on 24 February 1940 and raised in the Printfield area of Aberdeen, attending the former Powis Academy before moving to England to play for Huddersfield when he was 16. He went on to play for Manchester United, Torino, and Manchester City. Known as The Lawman, he scored 30 goals for Scotland. He died earlier this year, on 17 January 2025.

The commemorative plaque will be sited at his birthplace at 6B Printfield Terrace. The Denis Law Legacy Trust had made the application which was unanimously agreed today by Aberdeen City Council’s Finance and Resources Committee, going against normal criteria for plaques that the person should have died at least 20 years ago and have been born more than 100 years ago.

Finance and Resources convener Councillor Alex McLellan said: “Denis especially demonstrated his strong and caring commitment to younger generations by creating a legacy trust. The positive support and opportunities that Denis Law has given through the trust is an enduring way to celebrate our much-loved and much-respected local football hero.

“Denis Law has been an inspiring role model to so many people as well as being an exceptional footballer – he was and continues to be a hero in Aberdeen and abroad and we are very happy to agree to a commemorative plaque.”

Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Ian Yuill said: “It shows the depth of feeling to Denis Law that the Committee agreed today to go against normal criteria and agreed to a commemorative plaque honouring him.

“It is fitting he is recognised for all his achievements, not just those on the football pitch.”

Denis was European footballer of the year and Scotland’s only winner of Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious award for individuals. Denis frequently returned home to Aberdeen to his roots with several accolades in his honour. These include the Freedom of the City, featuring in the Sporting Champions section of Provost Skene’s House, and a 4.7m high bronze statue was unveiled in his honour in 2021.

When Denis received the Freedom of the City in November 2017, more than 15,000 people lined the streets of Aberdeen as he led the annual Christmas lights switch-on parade, following an earlier conferral ceremony at the Beach Ballroom. He said at the time that receiving the Freedom of the City as one of his life’s highlights.

Denis and his friend Sir Alex Ferguson feature in Provost Skene’s House, which showcases people with links to Aberdeen and the North East who have transformed the wider world.

The bronze statue of Denis was unveiled by The King himself in the heart of his home city in Marischal Square, beside Provost Skene’s House. Sir Alex Ferguson was at the ceremony to watch the unveiling.

Denis was known as ‘The King’ for his achievements in football and the statue was sited to be in close proximity to the statue of King Robert the Bruce outside Marischal College – two kings of the city facing each other.

The legacy of Denis Law continues to be represented within Aberdeen through Denis Law Legacy Trust and its successful Streetsport initiative with Robert Gordon University, as well as the Trust’s Cruyff Courts in partnership with Aberdeen City Council.

There is also a statue located at Aberdeen Sports Village and the Denis Law Legacy Trail – large-scale murals depicting Law on buildings in Printfield – is to be launched this month (May 2025).
