    Professor Mirela Delibegovic will host a Founders’ Week Lecture to celebrate the 530th anniversary of the creation of the University.
    At the free event on Wednesday February 12 she will share with the audience how her early life inspired her research journey and details of her ground-breaking work following in the footsteps of another Aberdeen diabetes pioneer, credited with saving millions of lives.
    Professor Delibegovic came to the UK on a scholarship from George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh, where her potential as a scientist was encouraged.  She went on to study pharmacology at the University of Edinburgh, for a PhD in biochemistry at the University of Dundee and then undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
    Her initial interest in diabetes research was fuelled by a family history and prevalence of Type 2 diabetes in Bosnia and Herzegovina – and she was determined to play her part in understanding why our bodies stop responding to the effects of our own hormone, insulin.
    She now leads the Aberdeen Cardiovascular and Diabetes Centre exploring how diabetes, obesity, heart disease and ageing are woven together and in 2024 her successful research career was recognised when she was appointed by the King as the first female Regius Chair of Physiology.
    Her work follows in the footsteps of previous Aberdeen Regius Chair of Physiology, JJR Macleod, who led the Toronto team credited with the discovery of insulin.
    Professor Delibogovic said: “Thanks to the team led by Professor Macleod, people living with type 1 diabetes, who do not produce insulin, have been able to inject it for more than a century.
    “But it wasn’t until the early 1980s that the receptor through which insulin works was identified and this is crucial knowledge for type 2 diabetes, where the body produces insulin but it doesn’t do its job.
    “We are trying to understand if we can use the targets post insulin receptor, to improve patients’ lives either through treatment or through earlier intervention.”
    The lecture forms part of the University of Aberdeen’s Founders’ Week celebrations which will also include a discovery day of family fun on Monday February 10 with tours of the Old Aberdeen campus, visits to the Zoology Museum, and STEM activities for all ages delivered by TechFest. The University’s Professor Gordon Noble will also speak at a Café Sci event in Aberdeen Art Gallery on Tuesday February 11 about his research into Pictish kingdoms in north-east Scotland.
    The week pays tribute to Aberdeen’s historic origins as an ancient University and provides an opportunity to highlight the important role the institution continues to play in education and research.
    Professor Delibegovic collaborates with researchers worldwide and from a range of different disciplines with the aim of turning the findings made at the laboratory bench into diagnostic tools, medicines and other interventions.
    “Understanding what causes insulin resistance and finding ways to postpone or even reverse these conditions is crucial to our future health,” she said.
    “My hope is that the research we are doing now will lead to simple, achievable and affordable therapies that tackle diabetes and its complications in the future.”
    The Founders’ Week inaugural lecture takes place at the Suttie Centre, Foresterhill on February 12 from 6pm to 7.15pm. It will include a question and answer session and will be followed by a reception.

    Launching The Big Apprenticeship Event for 2025 is SRC CEO Lee Campbell and the Deputy Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Councillor Kyle Savage.

    Southern Regional College’s Big Apprenticeship Event returns this February to Craigavon’s Civic Centre on Thursday 6th February from 5:00pm to 7:30pm. The Big Apprenticeship Event is a one stop shop for those seeking to start a new apprenticeship course from level 2 to level 5 from September 2025. The event seeks to match potential apprentices with employers, with over 40 employers and support organisations expected to attend both the Newry and Craigavon events. College staff will also be present discussing course modules, entry requirements and assessments.

    Also returning to the event this year are student ambassadors from various programmes of study, giving a first-hand account of what it is like being an apprentice and sharing their incredible journeys and giving the low-down on the reality of studying whilst being an apprentice. Employers, support organisations, lecturing staff and student ambassadors alike will be answering questions from attendees.

    Now in its 7th year the Big Apprenticeship Event, delivered in partnership with Armagh City Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and the ABC Labour Market Partnership, this event provides opportunities to young people and adult returners alike to develop skills and gain relevant experience with recruiting employers.

    Apprenticeships and higher level apprenticeships are flexible career pathways providing the chance to earn a salary while pursuing qualifications. With course fees funded by the Department for the Economy, now has never been a better time to start an apprenticeship or higher level apprenticeship at Southern Regional College.

    Apprenticeships are offered at level 2 and 3 at Southern Regional College in over 30 areas ranging from business, children’s care, construction, engineering, hairdressing & barbering, hospitality & food manufacturing to motor vehicles.

    Higher Level Apprenticeships provide participants with recognised foundation and honour degrees, referred to as level 5 and 6 qualifications in 20 subject areas.   • MIL-OSI Global: Compendium of the Occult by Liz Williams is a rich and appealing history

    In the fourth century BC, an unknown – but clearly disgruntled – schemer from the Greek city of Antioch had a curse tablet made. Inscribed on a thin piece of lead and deposited in a well, the tablet called for a “thunder-and-lightning-hurling” god to “strike, bind, bind together Babylas the greengrocer”.

    Around 1,400 years later, an Anglo-Saxon charm advised on how to protect a field. The secret was to take a piece of turf from each corner and anoint it with a mixture of oil, honey, yeast, milk from the animals on the land, pieces of the trees and plants on the land, and water consecrated to the god Thunor.

    In 17th-century England, the antiquarian Elias Ashmole hoped an astrological talisman would expel vermin from his house. Meanwhile, the diarist Samuel Pepys cured his upset stomach by purchasing a new hare’s foot. In 19th-century New Orleans, the Louisiana Creole woman Marie Laveau became famous for her healing, clairvoyance and work as a voodoo priestess, which she displayed in public gatherings at Congo Square.

    These are among the many fascinating snippets discussed in Liz Williams’s new book, Compendium of the Occult: Arcane Artefacts, Magic Rituals and Sacred Symbolism. Looking at western occult traditions from ancient times to the present day, the book explores how human societies have sought power, protection and insight from gods and stars, spells and amulets, sacred places and seductively enigmatic organisations.

    The book is made up of 65 short articles, grouped into six sections: the origins of western occultism; divination, rituals and rites; charms and talismans; curses and hexes; secret societies; and sites of significance.

    Many of the articles cover several centuries, meaning there is no scope for detailed analysis. However, Williams strikes an effective balance between general overview and colourful examples. She is sensitive to differences in perspective, noting the competing explanations for phenomena such as dowsing or Ouija boards.

    She also acknowledges the complexities of reconstructing past beliefs and practices from imperfect surviving evidence, although occasionally unreliable source material is not sufficiently interrogated. The book accepts too readily, for example, the questionable story that Louis XIV’s mistress Madame de Montespan arranged “black masses” in which she used the blood of babies to summon the devil.

    Magic and maladies

    Compendium of the Occult is handsomely bound, pleasingly laid out and beautifully illustrated. There are images of ancient clay tablets crisscrossed with incantations, witch bottles stuffed with nails and urine, voodoo dolls, mummies, skulls, books, statues, artworks and protective amulets in the shape of jaunty phalluses.

    Some of the printing causes confusion, however. “Gold dots” on the timelines are difficult to see, as is the introduction’s small white text on black pages. The dating of some entries lacks obvious logic: “palmistry” is dated from the 5th to the 1st century BC, even though the article stretches to the 20th century, and other practices get the vaguer label “ancient times to the present day”. But these are minor quibbles.

    More significantly, the book’s geographical remit is limited. The introduction refers to occult traditions in “the west”, but Britain is a particular focal point. Williams discusses eight “sites of significance”, of which three (Glastonbury, Avebury and Stonehenge) can be found within a 75-mile span in England.

    She does cover ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia; there is an entry on voodoo; there are references to the influences of Arabic astrologers, and occasional mentions of practices in east Asia. But more engagement with occult traditions from beyond Europe, particularly in modern times, would have enhanced the volume and better justified the ambitious title.

    All the same, this is a rich and appealing book. Humankind’s inventiveness in conceptualising the workings of the world emerges with force. Much magic is underpinned by a belief that the everything is interwoven: the earth corresponds to the skies, the microcosm of the human body to the macrocosm of the universe.

    Williams quotes the physician and polymath Cornelius Agrippa (1486-1535), who described how a square inscribed with numbers, stamped on a silver plate at the right hour, could call on Jupiter to bring the owner wealth and peace. If printed on coral, it could destroy evil spells.

    Material objects, plants, numbers and heavenly bodies are drawn into a symbiotic relationship, and invested with the power to reshape human lives. Agrippa’s plates reflect an enduring desire to situate humankind in relation to the environment, and impose meaning and harmony on a chaotic cosmos.

  • MIL-OSI Global: England’s maths teacher recruitment problem is set to worsen

    Everyone should leave school with a solid understanding of maths. Decent mathematics literacy is a hugely important skill in many aspects of life. We need it when budgeting for a weekly shop, asking for a pay rise and completing a tax return.

    An interest and enjoyment in maths fostered at school can lead people to study the subject further. Mathematics graduates go on to professions in government, industry, software development and financial analytics, as well as many genres of engineering.

    In total, 13% of all employment in the UK is in professions that depend on mathematical sciences. A workforce that has been well taught in maths is crucial to a society’s prosperity.

    Building a workforce skilled in mathematics in England, however, will be difficult when there are not enough people qualified to teach the subject at school. Mathematics is a technical discipline. Quality teaching relies on its educators to have specific training: a university degree in maths.

    Research published in 2019 in Australia found that secondary school students achieved noticeably higher results when they were taught maths by teachers with a university degree majoring in maths than those “out-of-field” teachers.

    But in England, the Department of Education has an ongoing problem of under-recruitment of maths teachers. In the year 2023-24, recruitment in initial trainee maths teaching reached only 63% of its target. Research from 2018 found that less than half of maths teachers in state schools have a mathematics or other relevant degree.

    And maths achievement is declining. In the OECD’s programme for international student assessment (Pisa) tests, introduced in the year 2000, 15 year-olds in the UK are recording their lowest maths results since 2006.

    The longstanding failure to recruit enough maths graduates to become teachers is now set to be exacerbated by the changes in maths provision at universities. Maths degrees are becoming less accessible to the people who are likely to go on to become teachers.

    University options

    Over the previous decade, but particularly since the pandemic, Russell Group universities – research-intensive institutions that take students with the highest A-level grades — have increased their intake of students taking maths degrees.

    On the other hand, maths options are declining at lower-tariff universities and those that offer flexible study options.

    Birkbeck, University of London, no longer offers undergraduate degrees in maths as a single subject. Birkbeck is renowned for its provision of evening and part-time degree courses, which offers flexibility for students who may not be able to attend a traditional course or need to work while studying.

    Huddersfield has also discontinued its mathematics courses after reviewing its provision, and many other institutions are considering further cuts and redundancies.

    In 2011, lower-tariff institutions accounted for 13% of the market share of the intake of mathematics students. This dropped to just 4.5% in 2021, putting such institutions under severe pressure.

    Graduates of post-92 universities – former polytechnics and other recently established institutions, which often require lower grades for entry – are much more likely than their Russell Group counterparts to go into school teaching. A recent report by Professor Paul Wakeling, which was commissioned by the Campaign for Mathematical Sciences, analysed outcomes of mathematical degrees in the UK across the period 2017-18 to 2020-21.

    Over that period, it found that 17.4% of graduates from post-92 institutions went into the secondary teaching, compared with around 5.6% from Russell group universities.

    The closure of mathematics departments causes the phenomenon of “maths deserts”: large swaths of the country where access to mathematics degree study is limited. This particularly affects students from poorer backgrounds, who are more likely to be living at home during their degree and will attend their local university.

    This also affects the provision of school maths teachers. Graduates in mathematics from more disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to go into school teaching than graduates from more wealthy backgrounds.

    The decline in the availability of maths degrees at lower-tariff institutions is likely to be reducing the number of potential maths teachers – as well as severely reducing the diversity of people going into maths.

    The chronic shortage of specialist maths teachers is set to worsen. Universities around the country are under severe financial pressure, which is likely to lead to further cutting of courses and staff.

    This will only exacerbate the problem of teacher shortages – which is turn will lead to declining mathematical literacy in the community, as well as a lack of diversity in mathematics.

    Scotland Office Minister Kirsty McNeill marked Holocaust Memorial Day by urging Scots to “unite in the stand against hatred, intolerance and prejudice”

    Minister McNeill was shown around the Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre, located within Garnethill Synagogue, by manager Kerry Patterson and Lionel Most, chair of the centre.

    This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is the 80th anniversary since the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.

    Events are taking place across Scotland, the UK and worldwide to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children who were murdered in the Holocaust, other victims of Nazi persecution and those who died in subsequent genocides.

    Increasing education about the danger of discrimination and preventing the spread of hatred is a key objective of the activity.

    The UK Government is committed to supporting all communities so they can live and worship safely – and through the Plan for Change will deliver a decade of national renewal, providing opportunity for all.

    Among the events in Scotland, Minister McNeill visited the Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre and Garnethill Synagogue in Glasgow ahead of HMD.

    Here she heard more about the community’s history and vast contributions to life in Scotland, the venue’s Holocaust education programmes and modern day antisemitism challenges.

    The Minister also hosted a pre-HMD event at the UK Government’s Edinburgh hub, Queen Elizabeth House, with Gillian Field – daughter of Holocaust survivors Henry Wuga MBE and Ingrid Wolff BEM.

    Here a captivated audience heard Gillian describe the story of how her parents met in Glasgow after they were brought to the city in 1939, aged 15, through Kindertransport – a rescue operation that moved Jewish children from Nazi-controlled Europe to safety in Britain.

    Both her parents deservedly received honours for their services to Holocaust education and Gillian now continues their legacy by shining a light on Jewish life across Scotland.

    Minister McNeill said:

    The annual Holocaust Memorial Day is a moment for us all to pause, reflect, and remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust. It also commemorates other victims of Nazi persecution, those who died in more recent genocides, and educates about the importance of continuing to unite in the stand against hatred, intolerance and prejudice.

    For the past 200 years the Jewish community has made a significant contribution to life in Scotland, a nation which I’m proud to say played a key role in providing sanctuary to so many refugees. It was a privilege to meet community leaders at the Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre and Garnethill Synagogue and hear of their excellent work. My conversations with them and Gillian Field fill me with hope that the horrors of the past will never be forgotten and that love and respect continue to be the values by which our diverse range of Scottish communities enjoy their lives.

    To mark HMD communities and organisations from across the UK are taking part in events including ones by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust – the charity established and funded by the UK Government to promote and support HMD.
    HMD also commemorates the victims of more recent genocides of Rwanda, Srebrenica, and acts of genocide in Cambodia and against the Yazidi people.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Improving Access to Scotland’s NHS: We Can Renew Scotland’s NHS and Help Our Nation Thrive

    Like all of us, the National Health Service is personal for me – I see first-hand all that it does, and has done, for my own family.

    In the last years of my beloved Mother’s life, I saw such care and attentiveness in the community and in hospital care.

    My wife would not have the capacity and capability she has in dealing with MS, had it not been for the outstanding care and insight of the National Health Service alongside, might I say, her absolutely personal determination to stay strong.

    I would not have had such joy in my life at the birth of my three children without the National Health Service.

    It is personal for all of us.

    That is why we care about it so much.

    That is why we want to see it thriving once again.

    We all know the tremendous pressures our NHS has been under in recent years.

    We see a service still reeling from the strain of a global pandemic – a pandemic that revealed the NHS’s many strengths but also exposed its underlying weaknesses.

    Weaknesses made worse by a decade and a half of austerity, and by the body blow of inflation that has meant – as we know from our own family finances – the available money delivers less.

    It is a service still beset by backlogs and delayed discharges, and struggling to meet the increasing needs of an ageing population.

    The challenges are great, of that I have no doubt. But I know also that our NHS is fundamentally resilient, fundamentally robust.

    I witnessed both these realities earlier this month when I spent a Saturday evening visiting the emergency department at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

    In the midst of both winter pressures and a particularly challenging flu season, I saw patients who waited too long to be seen, but also staff who went above and beyond.

    I saw an NHS that in the face of the storm kept on standing, kept on delivering.

    There are some who oppose the NHS model, who believe that the answer to our health challenges is a privatisation of care. They want us to believe that the health service is beyond saving, that it is on the point of collapse.

    But that is simply not true.

    There are challenges.

    Some services are struggling.

    Periods of real crisis as we have seen in recent weeks as flu cases spiked.

    The impact of these issues on too many patients is real.

    But, as I will set out today, there is nothing wrong with the National Health Service that can’t be fixed by what is right with the National Health Service.

    What is right with the National Health Service includes the thousands of health and care staff who are doing phenomenal things under enormous pressure.

    People who, time and again, display resilience, selflessness and grit, who truly go above and beyond.

    It includes innovations, such as the Rapid Cancer Diagnostic Service, a new pathway that delivers significant reductions in the time from referral to diagnosis, opening the door also to faster treatment.

    It includes national public health initiatives like the HPV vaccination programme, which has resulted in no cases of cervical cancer in young women who have been fully vaccinated.

    A remarkable, utterly remarkable, life-saving achievement.

    And it includes cutting-edge research, multiple projects, looking into the ways AI can transform diagnosis and treatment in the years to come.

    The foundations on which we will build NHS recovery and renewal are strong.

    Under this Government, the NHS will always remain in the hands of the public and free at the point of use. That is non-negotiable.

    The question then becomes how do we do better?

    How do we ensure our health service is not just the best in these isles but the best it can possibly be?

    The answer to that question is not a simple one. There is no ‘magic bullet’.

    Rather, it involves progress across multiple fronts, a balancing of sometimes competing demands and interests.

    It will require choices and action by central government, yes, but that must be delivered in partnership with others – local government, the third sector, patient groups, and health and social care workers at all levels.

    It must deliver reform that is fundamentally patient-centred but do so through a health and social care system that becomes an ever more interconnected whole.

    I have said before that my approach as First Minister is to seek the right solutions, not merely the quick ones.

    I favour consensus building and collaboration over diktats from on high. For the future success of our NHS this is not only the right approach, but also the necessary approach.

    We will only succeed on this path of reform and renewal if we walk it together.

    That is why the Cabinet Secretary for Health and I meet regularly with staff in all parts of the National Health Service.

    It is why we have been engaging with health boards, local government, Health and Social Care Partnerships, the Scottish Ambulance Service, Public Health Scotland, and NHS 24.

    We have listened carefully, also, to patients and their families, to all those who depend on the NHS for lifesaving, life-enhancing care.

    We have been told all that is going well and all that must be better.

    We have heard the advice from those with direct, frontline experience. And that has helped us develop a clear understanding of where the challenges are, and what changes are needed.

    It is this kind of open, collaborative approach, with a focus on solutions, on the right answers over the easy ones, that has led to the actions I am setting out today.

    It is a set of actions with clear outcomes – tangible improvements that we can and will deliver.

    Tangible improvements to make people’s experience of the NHS in Scotland better than it is today.

    Actions made possible by the record funding we are delivering to the NHS frontline.

    Actions that will address the immediate issues in our health service – those problems of access that I know cause so much frustration, and indeed for some, unnecessary pain.

    Actions that set out a new course so we can safeguard the NHS for the long-term.

    Over the coming weeks, the Government will set out for Parliament what the different elements of our approach will mean in practice.

    And we will be reminding Members of Parliament as we do that, that the delivery of this stronger NHS depends on the safe progress of the draft Budget currently being considered by Parliament.

    The actions we will take to deliver a more accessible, more person-centred NHS have three clear purposes:

    First, to reduce the immediate pressures across the NHS.

    Second, to shift the balance of care from acute services to the community.

    Third, to use innovation – digital and technological – to improve access to care.

    Together, these will address the problems that right now, every day weigh down our National Health Service.

    They will begin to deliver the long-term, systemic improvement that is needed to ensure our health service is sustainable for the future.

    And they will make it easier for people across Scotland to live healthier lives, helping us to build a future in which health is practiced in homes and communities as much as it is practiced in surgeries and hospitals.

    So let’s talk first about those immediate problems, the crises facing too many parts of our National Health Service.

    The first and most important thing on many people’s minds is how long it can take to access services.

    Delays in access, with waiting times that are too long, and delays in discharge, because appropriate at home or in community care is not available.

    The two, of course, are fundamentally connected.

    Last year, I referred to delayed discharge as the canary in the coal mine of our National Health Service. I think of waiting times in much the same way.

    Both these delays tell us that the flow of people through the health system is not happening as it should.

    Put more simply, people are not getting the right care in the right place, at the right time.

    That is not acceptable to me.

    It is not acceptable to my Government, because it can lead to people getting sicker as they wait, and it can mean they can take longer to recover.

    It adds substantially to the stress they and their loved ones experience.

    It creates greater strain across the system, leading to more delays elsewhere, poorer outcomes for others and still further stress on services.

    It is the very definition of a vicious circle, and it has to come to an end.

    So, today, we commit to a substantial increase in capacity in order to significantly reduce people’s waits.

    The changes we propose – including an enhanced regional delivery model, alongside increased levels of activity in our National Treatment Centres – will deliver over 150,000 extra appointments and procedures – in hospitals, in communities – in the coming year.

    That includes 10,000 extra procedures through smarter working in the National Treatment Centres.

    Other sites – including Gartnavel, Inverclyde, Stracathro, Perth Royal Infirmary and Queen Margaret Hospital – will deliver 9,500 extra cataract procedures.

    As well as 2,500 extra orthopaedic appointments and procedures – operations such as hip or knee replacements.

    In this way, we will create centres of excellence, places of expertise and specialisation, where we will be better placed to capitalise on the technological innovation and the potential of AI.

    And we will cut our waiting lists.

    Cancer referrals, gynaecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and radiology – all benefiting from this new investment.

    Centres able to deliver more care, more quickly and more efficiently than traditional, smaller, more fragmented facilities – with transport support provided for those who need it.

    And, to ensure that they do, we will put in place clear milestones and targets for those specialities that add the most to our waiting lists.

    Our second focus will see more and better care delivered in the community.

    I spoke earlier about the importance of people receiving the right care at the right time, in the right setting.

    That right setting will always be the least intensive setting appropriate to the person’s needs.

    Sometimes that appropriate setting is in hospital. More often, it is not.

    So to strengthen and renew our NHS, we will shift more care into communities and into homes.

    As much as possible, people who do not need to be in hospital will not go to hospital, protecting those acute services for those who absolutely need them.

    This new approach will mean changing the way we deliver acute services.

    By this summer, we will have specialised staff in frailty teams, at the front door of every A&E department in Scotland.

    This will mean that frail patients, often older patients with complex needs, will bypass our busy A&Es, in order to receive the specialist care and support they need, whether in hospital or back at home.

    It will mean better care for these most vulnerable patients while reducing the pressure on our A&Es.

    Our actions will also improve the NHS’s capacity to treat people at home.

    Our Hospital at Home initiative, which allows hospital-levels of care in a person’s home, will be expanded to at least 2,000 beds by the end of 2026.

    Without the need for any new bricks and mortar, the effective capacity of every single hospital in Scotland will be expanded.

    Taken together, it is action that will ease acute pressures, reduce delays, cost less to our NHS, and most importantly, help people get better more quickly, more comfortably.

    Quality care for thousands of Scots delivered not simply close to home, but at home.

    Of course, we cannot simply shift services out of acute settings. We also need to build capacity in our primary care and community health settings.

    With this in mind, the Government has been listening carefully to the views of Scotland’s GPs.

    They have described the multiple contributions general practice can make as we shift to more community-focused care. They have argued that GPs must be given the resources they need to fulfil that role.

    We have listened, and we have been persuaded.

    As a result, our plan will ensure that a greater proportion of new NHS funding goes to primary and community care.

    GPs and services in the community will have the resources they need to play a greater role in our health system.

    This increased investment will result in GP services that are easier for people to access.

    That is important in terms of people’s confidence in the health service – indeed, difficulties making GP appointments top the list of issues that people often raise with me.

    But equally, it will make it more likely that health issues are picked up quickly and dealt with earlier.

    For there is no better way to deal with illness than to prevent it.

    Addressing conditions early and intervening to prevent diseases from progressing, prevents manageable conditions from becoming serious ones.

    It is good for patients and of vital importance for the future sustainability of our National Health Service.

    That is why our plan also includes £10.5 million to build GP capacity to intervene earlier and prevent illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease.

    But this is not only an issue of money. We must also innovate and identify new ways of working.

    For example, I want to see the NHS Scotland Pharmacy First Service expand so that community pharmacies can treat a greater number of clinical conditions and prevent the need for a GP visit in the first place.

    The third part of our approach is innovation to improve access to, and delivery of, care.

    Better use of data will ensure that more operating theatres are working at maximum capacity, with best practice approaches, approaches shown to increase productivity by 20%, rolled out across the country.

    Using existing capacity, more operations will be delivered – enabling us to also deliver shorter waiting times.

    The latest innovations in genetic testing will be harnessed to enable better targeting of medications in cases ranging from recent stroke patients to new-born infants with bacterial infections.

    Smarter care, better care.

    Building on the already successful model of digital support for mental health – a service that saw 74,000 referrals in 2023-24 – we will offer support in additional areas including dermatology and the management of long-term conditions.

    This type of care, because it is not dependent on physical attendance, at a specific time, in a specific place, is more flexible.

    It means care can be made to fit better into the lives of those who use the services.

    Again, smarter care, and better care.

    And, as a much-needed addition to improve patients’ interaction with the NHS, there will be a Scottish health and social care app.

    This ‘Digital Front Door’ will begin rollout from the end of this year, starting in Lanarkshire, and, over time, it will become an ever more central, ever more important access and management point for care in Scotland.

    This is the third in a series of speeches I have delivered in recent weeks.

    In each I have spoken about the importance of identifying clear goals, clear direction to national policy.

    If we have a clear sense of the direction we wish to travel, the levels of success we wish to achieve, and if we can unite behind these goals, then genuine progress becomes all the more possible.

    Protecting, strengthening, renewing our National Health Service – that is a goal I think we can all get behind.

    In our January Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), we expect that U.S. wholesale power prices will average slightly higher in 2025 in most U.S. regions than last year, except in Texas and in the Northwest. We forecast that the 11 wholesale prices we track in STEO will average $40 per megawatthour (MWh) in 2025 (weighted by demand), up 7% from 2024. We expect the 2025 average U.S. residential electricity price will be 2% higher than the 2024 average, though after accounting for inflation, our forecast for U.S. residential prices remains relatively unchanged from 2024.

    Wholesale power prices are an indicator of the cost of generating power and are generally created on an hourly or daily basis in the United States. These prices reflect the operating and fuel costs of the most expensive unit that is needed for fulfilling electricity demand at a given point in time at a defined pricing point location within the power grid, along with any costs associated with transmission congestion into that area. The cost of natural gas is a primary driver of wholesale prices in many regions because the marginal generator is often one fueled by natural gas. We expect that the cost of natural gas delivered to U.S. power generators will average $3.37 per million British thermal units in 2025, which is up 24% from last year’s average but is about the same price as in 2023.

    We expect that average wholesale power prices will range from about $30/MWh in the part of Texas where the grid is managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to $55/MWh in the Northwest region. These two regions are the only ones in which we expect lower wholesale prices this year. The Northwest region is still experiencing drought conditions, but we expect conditions to improve slightly this year with 20% more hydropower generation. Increasing generation from solar power projects is contributing to lower wholesale prices in ERCOT.

    Other regions of the country are likely to see higher wholesale prices over the next year as a result of higher costs for natural gas. We expect the largest increases (about 30%–35%) will occur in the Southwest and California regions. Forecast wholesale prices in the ISO New England region average $55/MWh in 2025, up 16% from 2024. Although we expect higher wholesale prices in 2025, they would still be lower than in 2022, when the composite average wholesale price reached $80/MWh.


    Changes in the costs of supplying electricity can take time to affect retail electricity prices because retail rates are reviewed and approved by utility regulators in many areas of the country. We expect U.S. retail electricity prices for residential customers will average 16.8 cents per kilowatthour, which would be 2% more than in 2024. After accounting for inflation, forecast U.S. residential prices in 2025 are relatively unchanged from 2024.

    Retail central bank digital currency (CBDC) development projects continue to face significant hurdles before achieving large-scale implementation. Key challenges include ensuring system interoperability with existing payment methods and currencies worldwide, addressing privacy concerns in advanced economies, and overcoming infrastructure limitations in emerging economies, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

    GlobalData’s latest report, “The State of Central Bank Digital Currencies in 2025 and Beyond,” highlights that retail CBDCs fail to address real consumer needs or pain points meaningfully. Furthermore, they offer no clear tangible benefits that would drive user adoption.

    Blandina Szalay, Banking and Payments Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The very limited uptake of CBDC in countries where it fully launched – in the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union, and Nigeria – can be attributed to the lack of compelling incentives for consumers to switch to CBDCs from the payment methods they are already used to.”

    With habit and convenience being the dominant factors influencing payment tool choices globally for both in-person and online payments, central banks will require either robust incentive schemes or mandates to achieve a widespread adoption of their digital currencies. In countries already operating CBDCs, consumers have expressed that using CBDCs and their associated wallets has introduced additional friction to existing payment processes without offering sufficient benefits. Critics from other CBDC-piloting countries echo these sentiments.

    Szalay continues: “Achieving critical mass in CBDC adoption, however, will be necessary to reap any advantages initially proposed by central banks. These could include driving domestic payment system innovation, improving cross-border payment efficiencies, fostering financial inclusion, and newfound financial and monetary stability in emerging economies by formalizing their economies via CBDC.”

    Most recently, the Bank of England (BoE) unveiled its digital pound lab, a testing sandbox aimed at addressing key challenges such as interoperability, or absence of clear use cases and lack of viable business models. These issues are set to be tackled throughout 2025, before the decision on a wider launch is made.

    Szalay concludes: “As national governments keep allocating resources towards their ongoing CBDC projects, they should also consider the level of their citizens’ openness and willingness to use the central bank’s digital currency in their everyday lives. Should incentives prove insufficient, and governments have to turn to mandates, it will only reinforce critics’ concerns that CBDCs are a tool for asserting domestic and international control.”

    Residents of Hertfordshire are coming together to invest in renewable energy sources through a group-buying scheme for solar panels and battery storage.

    Solar Together helps homeowners feel confident they are paying the right price for a high-quality installation from qualified installers.

    Residents, including those from St Albans District, can join the group-buying scheme which offers solar panels with optional battery storage and EV charge points.

    There is also an option to acquire retrofit battery storage for residents who have already invested in solar panels and are looking to get more from the renewable energy they generate. 

    The scheme allows homeowners to increase their independence from the national grid. 

    It is free to register here from Monday 27 January and there is no obligation to go ahead with an installation.

    St Albans City and District Council (SADC) is working in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council and  iChoosr, experts in sustainable energy transition, to make the move to clean energy as cost-effective and hassle-free as possible. 

    Councillor Raj Visram, SADC’s Lead for Climate, said:

    One of our priorities as a Council is to tackle the climate emergency and encourage the District to become net zero by 2030.

    Our involvement with the Solar Together scheme is one of the many actions we are taking to achieve these goals.

    The feedback we have received from residents who have taken advantage of the offer in previous years has been highly positive. Residents in St Albans District have been among the most enthusiastic in the county.

    I urge any interested householder who has yet to make a Solar Together enquiry, to do so now. They can potentially cut harmful emissions and save money on their energy bills at the same time.

    SADC and other Councils enable the scheme and do not benefit financially in any way. 

    Solar Together, which has already proven to be a hit across the county, operates like this:

    1. Householders can register online to become part of the group for free and without obligation. 

    2. Approved UK solar PV suppliers participate in a reverse auction. They are able to offer competitive pricing as the volume and geographic concentration makes it possible for them to realise greater efficiencies, which they pass on with lower prices for installations. 

    3. After the auction, registered households will be emailed a personal recommendation which is specific to the details they submitted in their registration. 

    4. If they choose to accept their recommendation, the specifics of their installation will be confirmed with a technical survey after which a date can be set for the installation of their solar PV system. 

    5. Telephone and email help desks are on-hand throughout the whole process which, together with information sessions, will allow households to make an informed decision in a safe and hassle-free environment.

    Strabane is set to play host to thousands of fishing enthusiasts in March when the North West Angling Fair returns to the Melvin Sports Complex.

    The annual celebration of angling will host some of the UK and Ireland’s leading fly dressers, casters and angling specialists and the programme will include professional casting and fly fishing demonstrations on the River Mourne.

    The public will also have the opportunity to source angling merchandise from a wide range of fishing tackle producers, fly tying brands and fishing outfitters in the Melvin’s Main Hall.
    The event is organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council with support from the Loughs Agency.
    Mayor of Derry and Strabane, formally announced Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of March as the dates for the event on the Strabane foot bridge on the River Mourne this week.
    “The North West Angling Fair will bring thousands of visitors to Strabane in a celebration of everything that makes angling such a unique and rewarding pastime,” she said.
    “Whether you’re a complete beginner looking to try something new or an experienced angler eager to refine your skills, this event has something for everyone.
    “From expert demonstrations and technique masterclasses to sourcing the latest equipment, it’s a great opportunity to share ideas and connect with others who share a passion for angling.”

    The case of K & B Haulage Limited, recently heard by the Traffic Commissioner for the West of England, Kevin Rooney, has revealed a series of serious compliance failures affecting the company’s restricted goods vehicle operator’s licence.

    The licence itself had already been downgraded from standard international.

    The public inquiry uncovered severe and persistent compliance failings, jeopardising road safety and undermining fair competition.

    The commissioner’s findings included tax and MOT violations, where multiple vehicles were operated without valid tax or MOTs for extended periods and maintenance shortcomings with infrequent safety inspections – with some vehicles operating in dangerous conditions, including one driven with three bald tyres after being declared unroadworthy. Driver hours were mismanaged, and tachograph downloads were delayed by up to 237 days, with drivers failing to record required manual entries.

    On top of this, a there was a lack of oversight from former transport manager Richard Simcox who failed to fulfil basic compliance duties, contributing to widespread operational failings and a culture of non-compliance.

    The operator also engaged in subcontracting work to a company without the required operator’s licence, violating legal requirements, and Mr. Gettings admitted to lying during a DVSA investigation and failed to cooperate with vehicle inspections.

    Commissioner Rooney said “The compliance shortcomings alone with vehicles untaxed, untested and un-inspected, the lack of any drivers’ hours management or working time, mean that this is not a business I can have any confidence will be compliant in the future. The operation has been so dangerous that it must come to an end… The shortcomings I have found reflect a recklessness on the part of the operator, and a recklessness that is shown still to persist by the actions in October. Road safety has been compromised and the use of a Ltd Company driver is unfair competition.”

    The commissioner determined that K & B Haulage Limited was no longer fit to hold an operator’s licence. The company’s licence has been revoked, and its director, Kyle Gettings, has been disqualified as an operator for a period of two years. Transport manager Richard Simcox has also lost his good repute and been disqualified for an extended period.

    A new employability programme aimed at helping unemployed and under-employed people to kick start a coaching career in the leisure industry has been launched by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.

    The Leisure Employability Activity Programme (LEAP) is encouraging applications from 16–30-year-olds living in the Neighbourhood Renewal Area of Lurgan, Craigavon and Portadown to give them the skills and qualifications needed to become a qualified sports coach.

    The programme is funded by the Department for Communities through the Sport in the Community programme, which aims to use sport to develop communities by providing participants with opportunities to participate in sport, gain qualifications and employment.

    Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough, Councillor Sarah Duffy said: “Sport plays a pivotal role in every society in promoting physical activity and building community spirit. This programme is a fantastic opportunity for unemployed and under-employed people to get the skills and qualifications they need to enhance their future job prospects.

    “Taking the first step into training and employment can be daunting however our experienced sports coaches and industry professionals will guide and direct you towards achieving your goals. I would encourage those with an interest in turning a passion for sports coaching into reality to register their interest in the programme.”

    Applications are currently open for three programmes – Running Leader, Football Coach and Basketball Coach. Over a period of 7 weeks, participants will complete workshops and training in areas of personal development, application writing, interview skills, coaching qualifications, safeguarding and first aid.

    The search for a new development partner for the Festival Gardens scheme is set to move up a gear, with Liverpool City Council (LCC) and Montagu Evans announcing a shortlist of candidates will be confirmed in Spring this year.

    Following the launch of this unique opportunity in October 2024, dialogue is ongoing with a number of high-calibre parties who are expected to shortly return Outline Solutions.

    An invitation to shortlisted parties will be issued in March, and the selection of a preferred bidder remains on track for September.

    £53m has already been invested into the prime waterfront site and surrounding area to de-risk and accelerate delivery on this remediated brownfield land.

    Remediation and infrastructure installation has been completed by VINCI which also led to the creation of Liverpool’s first public park of the century.

    Previous development partner ION Property Development’s exclusivity has also now expired and a mutually agreeable settlement with the Council has been agreed.

    The decision to undertake a new procurement was in no way a reflection on ION’s competency or ability to deliver but was driven by the constraints of the land sale method that both parties, in good faith, pursued together. 

    Part of a wider 36 ha site, Festival Gardens’ Development Zone extends to 11 ha (27 acres), 5 km from Liverpool city centre.

    Its landmark waterfront location benefits from outstanding green and blue infrastructure with the Festival Gardens parkland, including formal Chinese and Japanese gardens, and River Mersey immediately adjacent.

    The Development Zone will become a thriving, sustainable, healthy and inclusive neighbourhood with a strong identity and sense of community, developed using innovative design and building techniques to meet local housing need.

    Development will be centred on phased, residential-led plans and multigenerational living with a range of housing types and tenures, maximising delivery and including more than 20% affordable housing.

    Montagu Evans is leading on the procurement for the Council as part of a multi-disciplinary team comprised of global programme and project delivery consultant and construction expert Mace, architecture and urban design group Metropolitan Workshop and architectural practice Shedkm. The project has the backing of Homes England and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

    Tenants must feel secure in their homes this winter and beyond.

    Scottish Greens spokesperson for housing Ariane Burgess MSP is urging landlords to avoid evictions this winter to ensure that nobody is left out in the cold this Christmas. 

    Almost nine months since the moratorium was lifted, Scotland faces its first winter without an eviction ban in place leaving many tenants feeling less than festive as they face the risk of homelessness due to the rapidly increasing cost of living and rent fees. 

    Ms Burgess said: “Christmas is a time of togetherness and goodwill to all. This season should serve as a reminder to show compassion and kindness. 

    “It can be a very difficult time, and there are many families who will go without presents and Christmas day dinners to keep a roof over their heads this year.

    “The housing crisis in Scotland is getting worse; yet many homes and buildings lay empty that could be retrofitted and repurposed to create safe, sustainable, affordable social housing. 

    “Homelessness is on the rise as many cannot meet the soaring fees to rent privately, and I fear that this will increase over Scotland’s first winter since the temporary eviction protections that the Scottish Greens introduced came to an end.

    We brought in a rent freeze and evictions ban in 2022 to ease the financial pressures and stress of insecure tenancies for people during the pandemic. 

    “Now, both the freeze and ban have ended. The forthcoming Housing Bill should offer stronger rights for tenants, but I fear that what we will get is a watered down version of the bill by the Scottish Government. 

    “This winter there is a real threat of more tenancies ending abruptly and more people facing homelessness as a result. That is why we need robust and permanent protections.

    “In the meantime I urge every landlord and others across the rental sector to be compassionate this winter; to avoid evictions and ensure that everyone has a warm, safe place to call home over the festive season and beyond.”

    “On 16th September – more than three months ago – I raised the prospect of biological men being able to access women only prisons in the Assembly. My comments were dismissed with a patronising swipe of the hand.

    “Questioning Ms O’Neill on the Executive’s Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy I asked:
    “In Scotland, there was a ridiculous situation where a rapist was held in a female prison before, rightly, being moved. Is there anything in the strategy to defend women-only rights and women-only spaces and to oppose the efforts of a biological man who thinks he is a woman to gain access to female-only spaces?”

    “Ms O’Neill totally ignored the question and responded by saying:
    “It is unfortunate that you take that approach, but we will not be distracted. We are here to launch a strategy to end violence against women and girls. It is endemic in our society, and it must stop. The focus of the framework is on prevention and tackling the root causes of violence against women. We will remain focused on the work that we are trying to do. It is a whole-society approach. I encourage you even to get behind it, because it is really important. It is about women who are being murdered. We need to end violence against women and girls. I would like to think that everyone who has been elected to the Chamber has the same goal in mind.”

    “Now we discover that the Department of Justice has conceded the challenge brought by a biological man to be held in Hydebank Wood because the Department had no clear policy on the issue.

    “Presumably a similar challenge could be successfully mounted by rapists as well.

    “Such a situation was – as my question three months ago illustrates – entirely predictable. How can the Executive claim to be concerned about violence against women when they fail to have a policy to prevent a man facing charges of threats to kill from being detained in our only female prison?

    “Indeed, what is the point of having a female prison if we now face the prospect of men being detained in it as well?

    “This is not a case of woke politics but a serious challenge to female safety.”

    SALLY BOWREY: Power will be given back to Australian travellers with a raft of new rights for cancelled and delayed flights. The initiative is designed to keep airlines honest and hold the industry accountable in some of the biggest travel reforms in a decade. 

    JAMES TOBIN: For more, we’re joined by Transport Minister, Catherine King. Good morning Catherine. Now, as someone who does quite a lot of travel, normally on the road with weather, catches a lot of flights, I am all ears on this one. What’s it going to mean for passengers?

    CATHERINE KING:  Well, what it will mean for passengers is that you get what you pay for, so either you’re able to enforce your rights to be able to get a refund or actually get the flight that you’ve actually asked for. And so, we’ve put out a draft charter of rights today. They’re out for consultation until the 28th of February. And really it is about enforcing the rights that you’ve booked a flight and that you should get what you actually pay for. So, there’s a range of rights in the draft charter that will ensure that airlines, and airports as well, actually lift their game when it comes to delivering the services that so many of us use to get around the country to work, to actually visit family, get to medical appointments, all of those things. So really, that’s what we’re doing today. It forms part of the ombudsman scheme that we’ve developed as part of the Aviation White Paper work we did this year. That scheme will be legislated next year, and the Charter of Rights really does spell out what you should be entitled to. It’s backed up by the Australian Consumer Law, what you’re entitled to if your flight doesn’t go ahead. So, if your flight is delayed by three hours or more at the fault of the airline, you should expect to be able to at no cost to yourself, get your flight rebooked either with that airline or another airline. If, because of time sensitivity, you can’t take another flight, they should be giving you a refund for that. Or if you’re stuck in not in your port where you live, you should be able to get accommodation and meals and again at no cost to yourself.

    SALLY BOWREY: And I think anyone, when you pay for something, you expect to actually get the product. And we do, have some pretty dismal stats in terms of, you know, flight delays, 30% of flights are delayed. So, I think the report is showing that it can take also up to almost 100 days for customers when they complain this is way too long. So, it is promising to push airlines to really reduce that. How will the new rules actually hold them to account to make sure that issues are resolved quickly?

    CATHERINE KING: Well, the first thing is that the Charter of Rights basically spells out very clearly what travelling public’s rights actually are. And so, we want to make sure that’s got out widely so people are aware of exactly what their rights are to enforce them in the first instance, to try and resolve the dispute with the airline, or if it’s a dispute with the airport, and then it’s backed up by an ombudsman scheme that is legislated. So, in the same way you’ve got a telecommunications ombudsman scheme, people, if they can’t get a remedy, then can go to the ombudsman and basically then have that referred up and they’ll do the work with you to try and make sure that your rights are enforced. It doesn’t preclude you still going to the Australian Human Rights Commissioner if you’ve got an issue in terms of disability access or things like that, but it’s basically underpinned by that. At the moment, if you book a flight, it’s really complicated and it’s often not until you try and get on the phone, try and get your refund that you actually then find out, well, what you booked. You know, they’re saying you can’t have a refund, you can have a flight credit. It’s not something you can use. And so this is really spelling out what the expectations are on the airline and then backed up by the ombudsman.

    SALLY BOWREY: Yeah. And I think there is a great deal of room for improvement. Catherine, just before you go, can I just quickly ask obviously in a separate issue in New South Wales, we’ve got trains being delayed and cancelled. It’s causing a lot of stress for people trying to get around at Christmas and also businesses. Is this fair and how do you see this issue being resolved quickly?

    CATHERINE KING: Well, I can’t imagine a circumstance where the iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks on Sydney Harbour are coming under pressure. And I think, you know, I’d say really clearly to the union, you know, understand you’ve got a dispute with the New South Wales government, but you need to sort this out because you’re doing yourself quite a bit of damage. This is not a great time of year to be doing this. People are trying to get their last-minute Christmas shopping done. Understand you’ve got a dispute. You need to resolve it quickly, because those fireworks, I mean, you know, everyone watches them. The world.

    SALLY BOWREY: Unfortunately, it seems we have just lost the transport minister, Catherine King. They’re just talking about the train strike in New South Wales. Let’s move on now.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Labour urged to give Scotland the gift of Football this Christmas

    Green MSP Gillian Mackay has written to the Secretary of State for Scotland to support the call.

    Green MSP Gillian Mackay, who has led a campaign to get all of Scotland’s national football games on free-to-view TV has urged the Secretary of State for Scotland, Ian Murray, to work with her to deliver on the call.

    Ms Mckay’s long-running campaign to end the reliance on subscription streaming services or pay-to-view channels has been backed by MPs, MSPs and supporters across Scotland.

    Mr Murray has previously indicated support for putting Scotland’s international matches on free-to-view TV. In 2016 he told the media “I fully appreciate that terrestrial television can’t compete with the vast sums of money on offer from the likes of BT and Sky but I’m sure some accommodation could be made to ensure everyone can share in Scottish international sporting events.”

    In a letter to the Secretary of State, Ms Mackay has urged him to meet with campaigners, the Scottish Football Association and broadcasters to help make football for all a reality.

    Ms Mackay said: “Increasingly, fans are being priced out of our game. From the extortionate ticket prices on the gate to the endless costly streaming services to watch at home. Something needs to change.

    “I am glad that so many people have joined me in calling for Scotland’s international games to be shown live on free-to-view TV. Sport is meant to be for everyone, and this is the most effective way to ensure Scotland’s next generation of footballers can feel inspired to dream of playing for their country.

    “We have seen that in the rise of women’s football. The regular TV slots have helped to make it a regular fixture for lots of women, girls and families, and has encouraged them to take up the sport, and support their local teams.

    “By listing Scotland National Team games as ‘national events’ in the same way that we do with the Euros and Scottish Cup Final, we could allow public broadcasters to share the rights alongside private companies such as Sky, TNT and Premier Sport.

    “I hope that the Secretary of State will join this campaign and use the power and influence he has to give Scottish fans the gift of football, and make our most iconic game accessible for all, not just for those that can afford it.”


    Letter to the Secretary of State for Scotland:

    Dear Secretary of State,

    I am writing to you today to discuss our national football team and our shared desire for everyone in Scotland to be able to view all competitive games on terrestrial television.

    When Scotland games are free-to-view they become bigger events for families across our country. Our national team is for all of us. At its best, sport is a cause of unity and pride, and brings people together like nothing else. We lose that opportunity for unity when we put up barriers.

    As you rightly highlighted when serving in Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet back in 2016, “I fully appreciate that terrestrial television can’t compete with the vast sums of money on offer from the likes of BT and Sky but I’m sure some accommodation could be made to ensure everyone can share in Scottish international sporting events.”

    I share these views and agree with your sentiment that such a compromise proposal would allow the BBC, STV and Sky to share the rights when a decision is made on the broadcasting contract for Scotland’s international football matches by European football’s governing body, UEFA. As you are aware, a similar arrangement is in place for other “listed” sporting events such as the Olympics, World Cup, European Championships and the FA and Scottish Cup Finals.

    By broadcasting matches on television for free we can inspire future generations to watch their team and dream of playing at Hampden. How can we expect children to want to follow in the footsteps of our players if they don’t have the opportunity to see them play?

     I hope that you will work with the SFA and broadcasters to ensure that Scotland’s football matches are always put on free-to-air channels, so that more people can watch them and join the Tartan Army in supporting our national side. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss this in more detail in early 2025.

    UK secures special protected status as geographical indications for a further 39 British food and drink products in Japan.

    Diners in Japan will be tucking into authentic UK products this festive period after the country granted special protected status to nearly 40 British food and drink products.   

    Festive favourites such as Single Malt Welsh Whisky and Beacon Fell Traditional Lancashire Cheese are just some of the products to receive the status, which means British businesses can export to Japan with confidence that their products are protected against imitation.  

    The news has been welcomed as an early Christmas present by food and drink businesses across the UK and could see a boost to British exports in Japan.

    Japan’s population of 124 million has a strong appetite for international food and drink and the country’s status as the world’s fourth largest economy in 2023 highlights the strength of its consumer market and the commercial opportunities for premium British products. 

    39 distinctive products from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, already protected and celebrated by the UK Government as geographical indications (GIs), have formally gained protection following the completion of Japanese scrutiny processes.  

    These protections will safeguard British food and drink products with a distinct local identity, supporting jobs and tourism in mainly rural areas and boosting local growth, as part of the government’s Plan for Change.  

    The latest batch of GIs follows 37 that gained protection in the country earlier this year, including Cornish Pasties and Anglesey Sea Salt.    

    Minister for Food Security Daniel Zeichner said:

     I’m thrilled to see there’s a taste for authentic British food and drink in Japan. We are committed to growing trade opportunities for British producers around the world as part of our Plan for Change, boosting growth and benefitting businesses across the country. 

    The UK is home to a feast of flavours from every corner of the British Isles. With the new agreement between the UK and Japan, consumers will now be able to chew over their choices with confidence, knowing they’re getting the quality and reputation that British food is known for – it’s the perfect recipe for success.

    Trade Minister Douglas Alexander said: 

    Iconic UK products such as Ayrshire New Potatoes and Carmarthen Ham will now benefit from protected status in Japan. From Sussex to Armagh we are securing protections for unique British food and drink products, ensuring Japanese consumers can rest assured that they are receiving authentic, high-quality British produce.

    This early Christmas present to British producers will give them confidence when exporting to Japan, helping them sell more, grow their business and ultimately drive economic growth.”

    Further British GIs have been recognised across the world in recent months, with fourteen UK GIs including Welsh Laverbread, Vale of Evesham Asparagus and London Cure Smoked Salmon granted protection in Iceland on 4 December under the Free Trade Agreement between the UK and Iceland, the Principality of Liechtenstein, and the Kingdom of Norway.  

    This followed new protections for Scotch Whisky in Brazil, South America’s largest economy, in August, tackling counterfeits and giving distillers the confidence to up their exports to Brazil.

  • MIL-Evening Report: From smaller homes to screen time, backyard cricket is facing challenges in modern Australia

    We are well and truly in cricket season.

    The Australian men’s cricket team is taking centre stage against India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy series while the Big Bash League is underway, as is the Sheffield Shield.

    It is a packed summer schedule, with the Australian women’s cricket team competing in an Ashes series against England that will culminate in a historic Test at the MCG on January 30: the first women’s Test played at the venue since 1948–49.

    That match will also be the 90th anniversary of the first ever women’s Ashes series, when England toured Australia in the summer of 1934–35.

    It’s an exciting schedule for fans and one Cricket Australia will be looking to capitalise on.

    But is all this cricket driving participation?

    The changing face of cricket participation

    Like most sports, cricket faces a challenge to retain junior players in an oversaturated sports market. It is also competing with other entertainment offerings, increased screen time, financial pressures, and parent and guardian unavailability.

    Ahead of the 2024–25 summer, Cricket Australia released its annual report, which included 2023–24 participation numbers.

    On the whole, things are looking somewhat positive, with growth in junior cricket (ages 5-12) increasing 5%.

    For women and girls, the numbers are even more encouraging, with Cricket Australia reporting 18% growth for the 2023–24 season, attributed to a 44% rise in school competitions, 6% growth in social competitions and a record-breaking year of youth girls’ participation (ages 5–12).

    But Cricket Australia highlighted challenges in that next phase – the teenage years, with the governing body reporting an overall 5% drop in teenage participation.

    The death of backyard cricket?

    There has been reflection recently about the decline of junior participation in some demographics and a changing cricketing landscape.

    A query that often arises in these conversations is whether the sport’s traditional breeding ground, backyard cricket, is under threat.

    What is interesting is the nostalgia many cricket fans hold for the days of the iconic pastime and how it is central to a person’s, and maybe even our national, identity.

    Backyard cricket has long been a staple for many Australian families (and those in cricketing countries). It has attracted a certain rose-coloured nostalgia that fills the memories of generations – the sounds of a ball bouncing off a wheelie bin, the shouts of “car!” in quiet suburban streets and maybe sometimes, of smashed glass and the cries of angry parents to not play near the windows.

    Cricket fans can connect to stories of backyard cricket, reflecting on simpler times, mates made in the streets and maybe even how they perfected their action in narrow driveways, to avoid trees or to not lose the ball over the neighbour’s fence.

    Cricket lovers can not only recall their childhood and growing cricket fandom, but also imagine how their cricketing heroes were likely doing the exact same thing.

    In 2009, Steve Cannane wrote the book First Tests – Great Australian Cricketers and The Backyards That Made Them. The book is a testament to the romance of backyard cricket and how we can relate as fans to the icons of the game, who also experienced modest beginnings in similar streets. They were just like us.

    But recreation looks different to today’s teens, with the rise of technology and other entertainment options, as well as changing social patterns where organic interactions are less likely or not encouraged.

    This can make it hard to find fielders for those long cover drives down the driveway.

    I recently discussed this on ABC Radio’s The Conversation Hour. We discussed how children might be less likely to approach other children to play today, which might be a result of COVID restrictions or general concerns about children’s safety.

    Australia’s changing housing market is also affecting backyard cricket.

    Apartment living and smaller homes in urban areas with limited outdoor space make the activity not only very difficult but not visible to invite others in.

    Modern city planning appears focused on making cities more compact and experts note the loss of outdoor space could increase the risks of physical and mental health problems among city residents.

    It appears for many, the days of walking down a street, seeing kids playing a game and joining in until your parents called out “dinner” (or “tea” in the rural neighbourhood I grew up in) are long gone.

    Finding the fandom balance

    Kerry Packer’s 1977 World Series Cricket is what inspired CEO of Softball Australia Sarah Loh to pick up a cricket bat when her family migrated to Australia when she was six years old.

    She told ABC Radio Melbourne:

    There were those great characters, and that is when my love of sport and cricket came.

    While traditional cricket fans often bemoan new formats, flashy tournaments and increased commercialisation of cricket, for many, these innovations also offer entry points, drive interest and allow their fandom to grow.

    Cricket Australia’s chief of cricket James Allsopp has spoken of the need for more social forms of cricket to keep kids interested in the game and prevent the drop-off in teen years.

    A balance must be achieved in our rapidly changing society – the challenge for cricket’s administrators will now be to connect with kids, women, and diverse communities in ways that respond to their needs and bring them to the sport on their terms.

    They must also do this in a way that protects the history that has already brought so many people together every summer in front of televisions, in stadiums and in backyards across the country.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Switching off from work can be difficult but taking a proper break is good for your health

    It’s never been easier to stay connected to work. Even when we’re on leave, our phones and laptops keep us tethered. Many of us promise ourselves we won’t check emails during our break. But we do.

    Being away from the workplace, and even in a new location, is often not enough to detach psychologically. We might still be thinking about a demanding project we raced to finish or even feel guilty about leaving others to cover for us.

    ‘Digital presenteeism’

    It mightn’t be spelt out by our employers but having phones and laptops can create an underlying expectation we are constantly available, even outside the usual work hours.

    This feeling of connection or “digital presenteeism”, can impact our health by making us stressed, anxious and burnt out.

    Switching off our work tools when we are out of the office or on leave can remove these problems as well as helping improve and enjoy our non-work activities and relationships.

    Right to disconnect

    While recently passed right to disconnect laws in Australia legally support workers to switch off, there’s another option already available to workers. Taking annual leave.

    Unfortunately, many workers don’t take advantage of this valuable resource, with an estimated 160 million annual leave days banked up by Australian workers. One in five have more than the typical yearly allocation of four weeks unused.

    The benefits of taking a break

    Taking a break doesn’t just feel good, it’s been shown to benefit your health.

    A 2017 meta-analysis of 86 studies revealed taking holidays can lead to reduced stress and less exhaustion during the holiday period.

    So what do we do with all the extra time we have? Sleep more? Do more exercise? Studies show that’s exactly what happens when we are on holiday. We studied movement patterns of 375 adults during annual leave. We found people were more physically active, less sedentary and had more sleep each day – all of which are good for our health.

    Holidays can also be associated with changes in how our body functions. A study of 112 holiday makers who attended a wellness resort for six days in the United States had increased heart rate variability which indicates greater resilience to stress.

    Also, the odds of meeting metabolic syndrome criteria decreased with each break taken each year in a cohort of workers who took on average five holidays each year.

    If you’re male and still not convinced, there is evidence that taking holidays is linked with living longer. Men who take more frequent holidays and more leave days a year have lower mortality rates than those who don’t?

    The best type of break?

    Simply taking leave is beneficial. Longer breaks do not have increased benefits and where you go is also unimportant.

    A study of locations found those who took a short four day break in a hotel did not benefit more than those who took a break at home. Both groups showed positive changes to stress, recovery, strain and wellbeing.

    In our study, the largest favourable changes were experienced by people who took one to two weeks’ leave or those who spent time outdoors camping or hiking. However positive changes were observed for all types of holidays.

    Ultimately, the best vacation is the one that fits your preferences and budget – there’s no such thing as a perfect holiday.

    How to make the most of your next break

    If you haven’t already, book some time off and get away from the workplace. Here are five ways to make the most of the time:

    1. Finish up your to-do list and clear out your inbox: returning to work after a summer holiday with fewer unfinished tasks allows the positive effects of the holiday to linger longer.

    2. Step away from the normal routine: try to limit work-like activities (such as shopping, cleaning, computer-based tasks) and find environments that feel removed from your typical routine and obligations.

    3. Engage in “soft fascination” activities: exploring nature is an example of an activity that gently holds your attention while leaving headspace for reflection. These types of activites have been shown to provide restorative mental benefits.

    4. Reduce the friction and chaos: avoid putting yourself in settings of conflict (such as visiting a difficult family member), confusion (busy, unfamiliar environments) or tension (excessive travel and/or tight timelines).

    5. Take more frequent breaks: aim for multiple short breaks throughout the year, rather than a single longer vacation. This spreads out the benefit with more lead-in time and longer comedown.

    The research is clear: vacations are essential for our health and wellbeing. So, if you haven’t already, book some time off and get away from the workplace.

    An additional £36 million of funding to rescue and restore 85 local treasures including community centres, pubs, parks and sport centres.

    • Government funding will save at least 35 community centres, helping fix the foundations of our communities as part of the Plan for Change

    • This will help kickstart economic growth and rebuild Britain in a decade of renewal

    Cherished community centres are among the 85 local venues across the UK that are set to receive government support to stay open, helping to fix the foundations of our communities.

    An additional £36 million of funding has been provided to back local communities, including the rescue of at least 35 community centres, protecting vital local services, boosting opportunities for working families and supporting local economies.

    As set out in its Plan for Change, the government is committed to kickstarting economic growth and raising living standards. Thriving communities lie at the heart of a thriving economy, and the support provided by the Community Ownership Fund will inject funding where it is most needed, making change happen and bringing people together in the process.

    The projects will support the government on its path to national renewal, helping realise our regions’ huge potential while creating safer and happier streets by restoring community pride.

    Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner said:

    “We are delivering on our Plan for Change by saving these vital community assets to provide important opportunities for working people and their families.

    “These projects represent what is so special about communities across the UK – bringing people of all ages together, providing vital support and giving them a sense of purpose and belonging.

    “We’ve prioritised these grants to help preserve and upgrade what these vital places offer to their communities – whether that’s improving access to sport and education, tackling loneliness or boosting family services for parents and children.

    “This is just the start of our work to support communities and give them greater control of their assets and we’ll be setting out our full strategy next year.”

    Action4Youth, a youth charity in the South East, has been given £300,000 to refurbish the George Amey Centre in Milton Keynes, securing its future as a centre for outdoor education and supporting the charity’s work to tackle knife and gang crime.

    Chief Executive of Action4Youth, Jenifer Cameron said:

    “We are so grateful to have funding which will enable us to complete our renovation project and to ensure the future of the outdoor centre which benefits 15,000 children and young people each year.

    “We can now look forward with optimism and hope to support many more young people in future.”

    Nineteen sports clubs and leisure facilities across the country will be saved, including four historic swimming pools. These include the 1960s Portishead Lido in North Somerset – where funding will also be used to renovate the café, supporting the local economy – and one of the last tidal pools left in the country, the Victorian Shoalstone Pool in Devon.

    On the Isle of Wight, the Isorropia Foundation will receive more than £1m to purchase and renovate the Medina Valley Centre so it can provide a range of community services including mental health support, training and educational opportunities. And Elmfield Hall in Accrington will be renovated to secure its future as a location for counselling, mentoring and employment courses.

    The MacMillan Hub in Edinburgh will be backed with £1.7m so it can continue to promote culture, learning and training opportunities, work and well-being in and around the town centre, and expand its café. And more than £1m will be used to restore the Higher Woodhill Viaduct so the East Lancashire Railway can continue to deliver a heritage railway experience, boosting the local tourism industry in the process.

    To tackle loneliness and support rural communities, £3.8 million will go to eight parks and eight pubs, including £300,000 to help buy back a popular village pub in North Yorkshire – The Punch Bowl Inn. £300,000 will also be used to renovate a 200-year-old countryside pub in Gwyned, Wales – Tafarn y Plu. This funding will back local businesses, create jobs and drive growth while restoring community pride.

    The government is also developing proposals for delivering on its manifesto commitment to introduce a stronger ‘Right to Buy’ and take over important community assets so they can determine their future in a meaningful way. This will be a genuine shift so local people feel far more control, power and agency in the places they live.

    In Scotland, £5 million will be awarded to 11 projects including over £1.7 million to refurbish and expand a community arts centre in Edinburgh – the MacMillan Hub.

    In Northern Ireland, £3.7 million will be awarded to 10 projects including £800,000 to expand the building and outdoor spaces of an autism and additional needs charity in Belfast – Sólás. This will help host more after-school clubs and youth programmes.

    In Wales, £2.1 million will be awarded to 7 projects including £400,000 to create a museum for the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, built in 1903 to link farming communities to the town.

    In England, almost £25.5 million will be awarded to 57 projects including:

    • 11 projects in the South West worth £4.7 million
    • 8 projects in the North West worth almost £4.6 million
    • 10 projects in the East Midlands worth almost £3.9 million
    • 4 projects in London worth almost £3.2 million
    • 8 projects in the South East worth almost £3 million
    • 6 projects in Yorkshire and the Humber worth almost £2.2 million
    • 5 projects in the West Midlands worth over £1.6 million
    • 3 projects in the East of England worth over £1.7 million
    • 2 projects in the North East worth over £675,256

    These projects were applicants to the now closed Community Ownership Fund.

    The government has also implemented new High Street Rental Auction regulations, providing local communities and businesses with a right to rent premises that have long sat vacant, casting a cloud over the local area. The power will help to provide new shops and community spaces, supporting businesses and communities to access the high street and create vibrant, bustling spaces they can be proud of.  

    The government will also support high streets by strengthening Business Improvement Districts which have helped to improve town and city centres across the United Kingdom for 20 years, while ensuring they operate to high standards and are accountable to their communities. 

    The English Devolution White Paper published on 16 December set out ambitious plans which demonstrate this commitment to communities and we will announce more details in 2025, including on the community ownership of assets.

    Over £2 million will be awarded to 7 much-loved local places in Wales, so they can stay open to keep their communities thriving. 

    This includes £1 million to save 4 spaces in Wales, including the Tafarn y Plu pub in Gwynedd, The Bunkhouse music venue in Swansea, a museum in Powys and a community shop in Gwynedd. This funding will be used to refurbish, renovate and secure the future of each of these buildings, allowing them to offer a diverse programme of events and activities including live music, well-being sessions and educational opportunities. 

    As set out in its Plan for Change, the UK government is committed to kickstarting economic growth and raising living standards. Thriving communities lie at the heart of a thriving economy, and the support provided by the Community Ownership Fund will inject funding where it is most needed, making change happen and bringing people together in the process.  

    The highest single award in Wales – £400 thousand – will also go to saving Llanfair Light Railway station and Cloverlands car model museum. This project will host a museum, archives, and a shared community space for residents and visitors to use. The funding will allow the community building to provide a visitor centre in which tours will learn the context to the railway station and its operations.  

    Minister for Local Growth, Alex Norris said: 

    “These are all multi-functional spaces that do so much for local people and most of us will have fond memories in treasured places like these. 

    “We’ve prioritised these grants to help preserve and upgrade what these vital places offer to their communities – whether improving access to sport, tackling loneliness or boosting family services for parents and children.”  

    Projects also set to receive money in Wales include: 

    • £300,000 to renovate Eveswell Community Centre in Newport. The centre will provide new and improved facilities for local families to host more activities like family groups, play groups, a Lego club, craft classes and after school youth groups. 

    • £300,000 to refurbish the Pentre Comrades club. The transformed building will provide the community a central hub to use for socialising and learning with facilities including a pub, shop, café, community garden, and kitchen spaces. 

    • £299,000 to renovate and refurbish Caerphilly Rugby Football Club. The space will provide new and improved facilities for their rugby development programmes as well as space to host events like fundraisers, local festivals and educational workshops. 

    Welsh Secretary, Jo Stevens said:

    “Congratulations to these fantastic community projects in Wales. Over £2 million is being spent by the UK Government to make sure that these special places are refurbished and improved so they can provide facilities for local people to come together. 

    “All across Wales there are brilliant people who give back to their communities. I’d like to thank them for all that they do and the UK Government is proud to be able to support them.”  

    This UK-wide funding prioritised by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government will help protect these cherished places from closure and disrepair, preserving popular spots for local people and visitors. 

    Altogether £36 million has been awarded to 85 projects across the UK.  

    The projects will support the government on its path to national renewal through its missions in the Plan for Change – from breaking down barriers to opportunity to kickstarting economic growth and creating safer streets by restoring community pride.

    British soldiers have successful trialled for the first time a game-changing weapon that can take down a swarm of drones using radio waves for less than the cost of a pack of mince pies.

    • Systems are capable of hitting targets up to 1km away and costs just 10p per shot   

    • The programme supports more than 135 highly-skilled jobs across UK industry 

    British soldiers have successfully trialled for the first time a game-changing weapon that can take down a swarm of drones using radio waves for less than the cost of a pack of mince pies.  

    The Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon (RFDEW) development system can detect, track and engage a range of threats across land, air and sea.  

    RFDEWs are capable of neutralising targets up to 1km away with near instant effect and at an estimated cost of 10p per shot fired, providing a cost-effective complement to traditional missile-base air defence systems.  

    The RFDEW is different from Laser Directed Energy Weapons – such as DragonFire – because it uses a radio frequency to disrupt hostile threats, rather than a laser beam of light energy.   

    The weapon uses high frequency waves to disrupt or damage critical electronic components inside devices such as drones, causing them to be immobilised or fall out of the sky. It can also be used against threats on land and at sea.   

    The British Army successfully trialed a demonstrator version of the RFDEW. The development system has been produced by a consortium led by Thales UK and including sub-contractors QinetiQ, Teledyne e2v and Horiba Mira and supports up to 135 high-skilled jobs in the UK.   

    This progress helps deliver on the Government’s Plan for Change by rapidly advancing technologies and building on the strong foundation of national security.       

    Its high level of automation means the system can be operated by a single person and could be mounted onto a military vehicle, such as a MAN SV, to provide mobility.    

    Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle MP, said:  

    The successful firing by the British soldiers of our Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon is another step forward for a potentially game-changing sovereign weapon for the UK.   

    It’s great to see defence experts and industry working collaboratively to put cutting-edge equipment in the hands of our Armed Forces.  

    This is demonstration of the UK remaining at the forefront of directed energy weapons and developing a crucial advantage against the emerging threats we face.

    A live firing trial was recently completed by the Army’s Royal Artillery Trials and Development Unit and 7 Air Defence Group at a range in West Wales, where they successfully targeted and engaged Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS), in a first for the British Armed Forces.   

    The user experimentation trials completed in recent months have enabled Army air defence personnel to explore and exercise the capability’s potential in different configurations across a variety of range environments, threat types and engagement scenarios.    

    This activity follows the development process announced back in May and delivered by Team HERSA – a joint enterprise between UK MOD’s Defence Equipment & Support and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl).   

    Dstl Programme Lead, Matt Cork said:   

    Getting this technology into the hands of our service personnel is hugely rewarding.    

    Dstl has worked collaboratively with DE&S and industry which has meant the rapid evolution of radio frequency technology.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: London set to be undisputed global capital for women’s sport in 2025 as city plays host to the world’s biggest events

    • Women’s tennis will return to the Queen’s Club for first time in more than 50 years
    • World class women’s cricket, football, netball, hockey, basketball and athletics also feature on packed sporting events calendar in London next year

     

    The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has today declared that London is set to be the undisputed global capital for women’s sport in 2025, with some of the world’s biggest sporting events to be hosted in the capital next year.

    The final in London is set to have a world-record attendance for a one-day women’s rugby event, with demand outstripping the supply of tickets for the Twickenham showpiece. Attendance is expected to top both the 58,498 who watched England beat France at the same venue in 2023 and the 66,000 at the Stade de France for the women’s Olympic sevens at Paris 2024. In total, more than 220,000 tickets have already been sold for the tournament, ensuring it will be the best attended in history.

    Ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup, Twickenham will host one of the biggest matches in the 2025 Guinness Women’s Six Nations Rugby as England face France on 26 April, in a clash of the two highest ranked teams in the tournament.

    Another major milestone for women’s sport next year will be the return of a women’s tennis tournament to the iconic Queen’s Club for the first time in more than 50 years. The new Women’s WTA 500 event begins on 9 June, with former British No.1 and Olympic Silver medallist Laura Robson appointed as Tournament Director. The tournament will be held shortly ahead of the prestigious 2025 Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, where the world’s best women’s and men’s tennis players will compete for the for the biggest prize in the sport.

    In cricket, England Women face India in a highly anticipated clash between two of the world’s best sides. They will compete in a T20 International at The Kia Oval on 4 July, ahead of a One Day International (ODI) on 19 July at Lord’s, the Home of Cricket. The first ever Vitality Blast Women’s Finals Day will take place at The Kia Oval on 27 July while The Hundred competition is scheduled to take place across August, where London has two women’s teams – the Oval Invincibles (based at The Kia Oval) and London Spirit (based at Lord’s).

    The summer will also see the return of world class athletics to London Stadium as the 2025 London Athletics Meet is staged on 19 July as part of the Wanda Diamond League series. The 2024 event was a sell out for a second year in a row and featured international superstars including Dina Asher-Smith, Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Bol, with a world class line up expected again this year.

    London remains the world’s top destination for women’s football. On 26 February the England Lionesses, the current European Champions, will host reigning World Champions Spain at Wembley Stadium in a repeat of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final. The Adobe Women’s FA Cup final will take place at the same venue on 18 May.

    London teams also make up almost half of the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL). Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are all currently competing in the 24/25 WSL, with the season running until May 2025. After a summer break, the 25/26 WSL season will begin in September.

    The capital is also the best city to watch netball, with the Copper Box on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park the home of Netball Super League (NSL) team London Pulse. The new NSL season will run from March to July 2025, with the NSL Grand Final taking place at the O2 Arena on 6 July.

    In basketball, the Playoff Finals will also return to the O2 Arena on May 18, where the top teams from the Women’s and Men’s Super League’s will compete for the coveted title.

    Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said: “I’m so excited that London is set to be the undisputed global capital for women’s sport in 2025, with some of the world’s biggest events coming to our city next year.

    “I am delighted that we will be playing host to the Women’s Rugby World Cup, while we will also see the historic return of women’s tennis to the Queen’s Club. This is in addition to world class women’s cricket, football, netball, hockey, basketball and athletics in the capital.

    “I would urge Londoners to take up the opportunity to attend some of these amazing events, cheering on our top athletes and sports women. Ensuring London hosts many of the world’s leading sporting events is an important part of our work building a better London for everyone.”

    An estimated six million people attended sporting events across the capital this summer, including the UEFA Champions League Final and European Professional Club Rugby Finals, cementing London’s position as the undisputed sporting capital of the world.*

    Polling from YouGov found that 62 per cent of Londoners feel proud of living in London when major sporting events are hosted, with 72 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds feeling proud. More than two-thirds (69 per cent) of Londoners think that hosting major sporting events impacts positively on London’s economy.**

    The capital was also crowned the world’s leading sporting events host in the 2024 Global Cities Report as well as the best cultural experience destination.***

    Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 Managing Director, Sarah Massey said: “With the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 set to capture hearts and headlines globally, the anticipation for the tournament is reaching new heights.

    Summary

    At around 13:09 on 27 December 2023, the 10:46 Perth to Aberdeen passenger service collided with a fallen tree approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Broughty Ferry, Dundee. The train was travelling at around 84 mph (135 km/h) when the collision occurred. The train suffered significant damage to the leading driving cab. There were no physical injuries to the 37 passengers and three staff members on board the train.

    The tree had fallen from Barnhill Rock Gardens, a public park owned by Dundee City Council, and was brought down by winds during Storm Gerrit. This storm had been subjecting the area to high winds and heavy rain for several hours preceding the accident. RAIB’s investigation found that the soil in which the tree was rooted had characteristics which limited the tree’s ability to resist the wind forces acting on it. In addition, three other trees at this location had been felled before May 2023, increasing the exposure of the tree which fell to winds from the Firth of Tay.

    Around 12 minutes before the collision, a member of the public became aware that a tree had fallen across the railway and contacted Network Rail using the public helpline. The helpline call handler attempted to pass this information on to Network Rail’s Scotland route control on a number of occasions, but the call from the helpline call handler was not answered until after the accident. This meant that a warning about the fallen tree did not reach the driver of the train in time to prevent the accident.

    The risk of trees in Barnhill Rock Gardens falling onto the railway not being effectively controlled was the factor underlying the accident. Network Rail is reliant on neighbouring landowners controlling the risk associated with visually healthy trees falling onto the railway lines from outside of the railway boundary. However, Dundee City Council did not effectively manage the risk of trees falling from its land onto the adjacent railway lines.

    As a consequence of the accident, the survival space in the cab was considerably reduced. The driver only escaped serious injury by crouching behind the driving seat once they had made an emergency brake application on realising the collision was inevitable. RAIB also observed that the telephone equipment used at Scotland integrated control centre did not display missed call information.

    Since this accident, Network Rail has provided helpline staff with an additional contact telephone number for use in emergencies.

    Recommendations

    RAIB has made three recommendations as a result of its investigation. The first of these is to Network Rail to consider how technology could assist in the detection of trees subject to altered exposure, including those trees on third-party land. The second recommendation is that Dundee City Council should review its management of the trees for which it is responsible to ensure that it is effectively controlling the risk of them falling onto the railway.

    RAIB has also recommended that the Rail Safety and Standards Board’s Carmont recommendations steering group should review its response to recommendation 19 made within RAIB report 02/2022, following the investigation into the derailment of a passenger train at Carmont, Aberdeenshire on 12 August 2020.

It also states that onshore wind capacity should be almost doubled to meet the decarbonisation target, from 14GW installed today to 27GW by 2030.

    The Company submitted a Section 36 application to the Scottish Government. The application is currently under consideration by the Government’s Energy Consents Unit (ECU). The Clashindarroch Wind Farm Extension application consists of up to 22 wind turbines each with an installed capacity of up to 6.6MW, as well as a battery storage facility of up to 50MW.

    Portsmouth has hit a major milestone this year, with over 1 million bus journeys being taken each month, as figures reveal a 22.3% increase in bus usage over the past year. This surge in passenger numbers places Portsmouth in the top four cities across England for bus travel recovery, with the city ranking as the highest improver in the UK.

    Much of this success is thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Portsmouth Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), launched in January 2022 with £48.3 million in funding from the Department for Transport (DfT). The Portsmouth BSIP is being delivered in partnership with local bus companies First Bus South and Stagecoach South and has been instrumental in revitalising the city’s bus network, earning the city the prestigious Partnership for Excellence Gold Award at this year’s UK Bus Awards in recognition of its innovative approach to public transport improvements. This is all part of the council’s overall plan to make travel in the city easier, faster and greener.

    Key achievements of the Portsmouth BSIP include the launch of the Pompey ticket range and the Pompey Young Person ticket, aimed at making bus travel more convenient, affordable, and accessible for passengers. These include discounted travel options for students, young people, those travelling in groups or at night, and those hopping on and off for 90 minutes, and the tickets can be used on both First and Stagecoach buses.

    The council have run a host of fare-free schemes to encourage new riders to give the bus a try, which generated over 191,000 extra bus journeys over September weekends in 2023 and 2024, increasing bus patronage by over 46%.

    In addition, the city has introduced two 24/7 bus routes and increased services during evenings and weekends to better meet the needs of commuters and those traveling at off-peak hours.

    2024 has also seen the launch of the Easy Travel Access Fund, which has helped improve accessibility and convenience for passengers with disabilities and additional mobility needs and communities who have found it difficult to access the bus, by providing funding to the community groups, businesses and charities who need it. These initiatives have been vital in making bus services more inclusive and user-friendly for a diverse range of passengers.

    There are also improvements to bus stops in the city, with upgraded information screens expected to pop up in the new year, and other bus stop and bus lane improvements aimed at making bus journeys faster and more reliable have been proposed. These improvements, which are expected to continue throughout the year, will enhance the overall passenger experience and contribute to further growth in bus usage.
