    High concentrations of heavy metals are being observed in patients from Drapetsona, Keratsini and Perama – a significant factor in the development of cancer, mainly of the lung. Measurements by the ‘Demokritos’ National Centre for Scientific Research confirm that the air is contaminated with volatile sulphur compounds from the processing and combustion of petroleum products and, on certain days, recorded benzene levels also exceed the mean limit value for the protection of human health. The risk of a large-scale industrial accident is ever-present, especially given that there are no mass escape routes for residents and the four petroleum facilities in Perama and ‘Oil One’ in Drapetsona are located in residential areas.

    In view of the above:

    • 1.What is the Commission’s position on the urgent need to implement the demands of unions and organised bodies for the immediate relocation of over 100 oil and other toxic substance tanks located within the urban fabric of Perama, the installation of ‘Oil One’ in Drapetsona and the return of all areas to the people, for use based on the modern needs of the people?
    • 2.What is the Commission’s position on the fact that the continued operation of the ‘Oil One’ facilities in Drapetsona and the suggested change of use of the already dangerous ‘ETEKA’ tank in Perama, under the responsibility of the EU and governments, exposes the people of the region to incalculable risks?
    • 3.What is the Commission’s position on the fact that there is no comprehensive plan for the prevention of and response to large-scale accidents rooted in the protection of workers, residents and the environment?

    Legislation Heads to President Trump to be Signed into Law

    BISMARCK, N.D. – Senator John Hoeven issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill, legislation that delivers on promises to:

    • Provide permanent tax relief for American families and small businesses.
    • Secure the border. 
    • Rebuild our military.
    • Support farmers and ranchers by passing the heart and soul of the farm bill.
    • Unleash American energy dominance.

    At the same time, the legislation finds savings of $1.6 trillion through common sense reforms and reducing waste, fraud and abuse, ultimately reducing the deficit by $507 billion.

    “The One Big Beautiful Bill will make our nation more prosperous and more secure. We worked to pass this legislation to provide permanent tax relief for American families that will enable them to keep more of their hard-earned paychecks. We invest in priorities like border security, national defense, unleashing American energy dominance and passing the heart and soul of the farm bill for our farmers and ranchers. At the same time, we find $1.6 trillion in savings to help with our debt and deficit. This bill delivers on the priorities that President Trump promised to get our nation back on track.”

    Tax Relief for Families and Small Businesses

    The legislation permanently extends current individual tax rates and bracket changes of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, providing $4 trillion in tax relief and will increase take-home pay by up to $10,900 in the first four years for the typical family, resulting from economic growth and tax relief.

    The bill provides new and expanded tax deductions and credits for individuals, families and seniors, including:

    • No taxes on tips or overtime for millions of American workers.
    • Increasing and making permanent the enhanced child tax credit at $2,200, with $1,700 of that amount being refundable, adjusted for inflation.
    • Permanent relief from the death tax by setting the exemption to $15 million or $30 million for those married filing jointly, adjusted for inflation.
    • Savings accounts for newborns to help build financial security.
    • A new $6,000 tax deduction for millions of low- and middle-income seniors. Combined with other deductions, this will result in the average beneficiary paying zero taxes on Social Security. 

    The legislation helps small businesses, including agricultural producers and manufacturers invest in their operations by:

    • Permanently extending the Section 199A pass-through deduction for small businesses, farmers and ranchers.
      • Permanently extending the Section 199A(g) deduction used by agricultural cooperatives.
    • Increasing the Section 179 expensing amount to $2.5 million and increasing the phaseout for qualified property at $4 million.
    • Establishing a 100 percent accelerated depreciation for new industrial and manufacturing facilities that begin construction between 2025-2028.
    • Making permanent the 30 percent interest expense allowance.
    • Permanently extending the 100 percent domestic research and development deduction.
    • Making permanent 100 percent bonus depreciation.

    Support for Farmers and Ranchers

    To support the nation’s farmers and ranchers, Hoeven worked to pass the heart and soul of the farm bill in the One Big Beautiful Bill.  The legislation improves the farm-safety net to meet today’s markets and input costs, essentially providing a seven year farm bill. Specifically, the bill:

    • Increases reference prices for Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) by 10% to 20% (specific increase varies by commodity).
      • Built-in future reference price increases with an inflation adjuster and an improved price escalator to prevent reference prices from becoming outdated when market and input costs change.
      • New safety net begins right away – producers can receive the higher of the ARC or PLC payment for this crop year, 2025, with the new updated reference prices. North Dakota farmers will see tens of millions of dollars in relief in 2025 alone thanks to these updates.
    • Includes key provisions of Hoeven’s FARMER Act to strengthen and expand access to affordable crop insurance:
      • Increases premium support for individual-based coverage across nearly all levels – starting at 55% — by an additional 3-5%.
      • Enhances the Supplemental Coverage Option by raising the coverage level from 86% to 90%, and boosts premium support from 65% to 80%.
    • Extends the sugar program through 2031, while increasing the sugar loan rate to better align with current market conditions.
    • Improves livestock disaster programs
      • Sets Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) payments at 100% of market value for losses from federally protected predators and 75% for weather and disease losses.
      • Improves the Livestock Forage Program (LFP) to provide one monthly payment to eligible producers with grazing land in counties rated D2 (severe drought) for at least four consecutive weeks and two payments if D2 persists during any seven of eight consecutive weeks within the normal grazing period.

    Unleashing U.S. Energy Dominance

    The One Big Beautiful Bill will help restore American energy dominance by rolling back burdensome Green New Deal policies and empowering domestic energy production, including:

    • Increasing the value of the 45Q tax credit for captured carbon used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and utilization to match that of sequestration.
    • Requiring the Interior Department to hold regular oil and gas lease sales across federal lands and waters.
    • Requiring the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to act timely on coal lease applications.
    • Reducing the royalty rate for oil, gas and coal produced on federal land to their levels prior to the Biden administration’s tax-and-spend legislation.
    • Stopping the Biden-era natural gas tax.
    • Investing in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
    • Providing regulatory relief for energy producers and repeals Biden-era Green New Deal policies and programs.

    Bolstering the Military

    • $25 billion to support the Golden Dome initiative, with investments in hypersonic testing, ground-based radars, and space-based sensors that support North Dakota-based missions and capabilities.
    • $15 billion to enhance nuclear deterrence, including the nuclear missions based at Minot Air Force Base:
      •  $2.5 billion for the new Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) program.
      • $500 million to sustain the existing Minuteman III ICBM.
      • $200 million for additional MH-1139 Grey Wolf helicopters.
    • Improves servicemembers’ quality of life through increased allowances and special pays, as well as improvements to housing, health care, childcare, and education.

    Securing the Border

    • Completes construction of the border wall, and upgrades barrier systems including access roads, cameras, lights, and sensors.
    • Improves border screening technology to help prevent drug trafficking and human smuggling.
    • Strong funding to hire and train more border security personnel.
    • Funds the Operation Stonegarden grant program to equip state and local law enforcements to cooperate with Border Patrol.
    • Invests in state and local capabilities to detect threats from unmanned aerial systems.

    Supporting Water Infrastructure

    • Provides $1 billion in funding for Bureau of Reclamation Water Conveyance Projects, including for eligible projects like the Eastern North Dakota Alternate Water Supply Project (ENDAWS).

    ​Digital Education Week 2025 (DEW) is a landmark event promoting the development of digital education by the Education Bureau (EDB). A flagship event of the first DEW, the International Summit on the Use of AI in Learning and Teaching Languages and Other Subjects (AIinLT), was officially launched today (July 4). The AIinLT is co-organised by the EDB, the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) Department of English and Communication and the Hong Kong Education City (EdCity), providing a valuable and practical platform for teachers, researchers, and others in the education sector to learn and share insights regarding the use of AI in their respective fields of education.

    Officiating at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, said that the country placed great importance on advancing digital education. The EDB also implements digital education through four major focus areas, namely:

    1. enhancing students’ digital literacy and skills to prepare them as responsible citizens and lifelong learners;
    2. strengthening professional training in digital education for teachers and encouraging schools to leverage innovative technologies;
    3. optimising digital education infrastructure and fostering personalized learning; and
    4. expanding cross-border and international collaboration to enhance synergy and promote high-quality digital education development.

    Dr Choi also called for collaboration among all stakeholders – including the Government, educational institutions, educators, and the community – to optimise resources, share best practices, and maximise the impact of digital education. She also emphasised the irreplaceable role of human connections in learning, encouraging attendees to harness AI wisely to empower individuals, strengthen communities and build a smarter, more connected world of learning.

    At the ceremony, the Chairperson of SCOLAR, Dr Anissa Chan, said that SCOLAR is committed to embracing technological advancements in language education. She noted that this commitment was what inspired SCOLAR to organise, finance and host the AIinLT, which is one of the first international events in Hong Kong focusing on the use of AI in education. The AIinLT serves as a collaborative platform for innovation and exploration.

    Dr Chan also spoke on the transformative potential of AI in personalising learning and enhancing language acquisition. She stressed the importance of guiding technological development through effective strategies, ethical considerations, and a learner-centred approach. She encouraged participants to shape the future of smart language learning, ensuring that AI serves as an enabler in education rather than a replacement for human interaction.

    In his welcome remarks, the President of PolyU, Professor Teng Jinguang, echoed Dr Choi and said that the city of Hong Kong is uniquely positioned to be a global leader in AI-powered education and technology-driven learning, given its world-class education system, renowned universities, and its development into an international innovation and technology centre and international hub for post-secondary education.  

    He added that PolyU has been promoting the development of AI in education. PolyU was a forerunner university to introduce compulsory AI education for undergraduates back in 2022, and established this year the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, the PolyU Academy for Artificial Intelligence as well as the Language Education Institute. All these efforts underscore PolyU’s far-sightedness and leadership in AI-empowered education and research. He expects that this event will spark meaningful ideas and collaborations that will help reshape AI in education in Hong Kong.

    In his address, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hong Kong Education City, Mr Armstrong Lee, emphasised EdCity’s unwavering commitment to fostering cross-sector collaboration aimed at establishing a robust AI education ecosystem that propels the advancement of digital education. To expedite the digital transformation of educational practices, EdCity is developing the “EdMarket,” an innovative super-shelf for electronic teaching tools. This platform will feature a diverse array of high-quality global educational resources, including pioneering AI teaching tools designed to enrich and inspire transformative teaching and learning methodologies.

    The AIinLT is taking place at PolyU for four consecutive days starting from today. The AIinLT on the first two days feature keynote speeches, a panel discussion, paper presentations, and teaching demonstrations. The following two days will include a post-summit workshop series covering a wide range of topics, along with a technology showcase where leading EdTech providers will demonstrate the latest AI hardware and software solutions, offering educators firsthand exposure to cutting edge-innovations.   • MIL-OSI NGOs: BRICS: Greenpeace calls for strong global leadership in pushing climate action and nature protection

    Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Leaders at the BRICS Summit have a responsibility to reinforce multilateralism and deliver an urgent signal they are prepared to act on the global challenges of climate change and nature protection.

    Less than two weeks after the Bonn Climate Change Conference was marred by a lack of urgency and as G7 leaders tiptoed around the need for climate action, BRICS leaders have an obligation to move ahead with urgent climate action on the road to COP30 in Brazil – including accelerating the COP28 decision to transition away from fossil fuels to align their climate action plans with the 1.5°C goal. 

    Anna Carcamo, Climate Politics Specialist, Greenpeace Brazil said: “All eyes are on Brazil this year as the BRICS and COP30 host. This is a seismic opportunity to drive bold, collaborative Global South leadership. BRICS nations, several of which are among the most climate vulnerable, must seize this moment and take a decisive stand for people and the planet.

    “The BRICs can lead climate action with strong 2035 climate action plans and Brazil has a responsibility to steer them to higher ambition, ensuring an accelerated transition away from fossil fuels and pushing forward to end deforestation through a transformative forest outcome at COP30 in the Amazon.”

    Yao Zhe, Global Policy Adviser, Greenpeace East Asia said: “The BRICS agenda has always placed global development at its core. However, amid major economic and geopolitical challenges, ecological degradation is threatening the foundations of future prosperity and undermining development potential.

    “It is crucial therefore that the BRICS evolves into a positive force for strengthening global environmental and climate governance by offering joint leadership and innovative solutions. As a founding member of BRICS, China plays a particularly important role in this endeavour.”

    Koaile Monaheng, Pan African Political Strategist, Greenpeace Africa said: “In a year as the G20 host, South Africa also needs to live up to its global responsibilities and a good place to start is ratifying the global oceans treaty and pushing other BRICS members to do the same. But responsible leadership also starts at home and South Africa must push ahead with an ambitious 2035 climate action plan to set the scene for climate finance talks at COP30.”

    Rayhan Dudayev, Forest Solution Political Lead, Greenpeace Southeast Asia said: “The world is watching for Global South leadership that strengthens multilateralism, centres climate justice and puts community-based solutions at the heart of climate action and finance. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities protect over one-third of the world’s forests, but receive only 1 % of global climate finance. The Brazilian-led Tropical Forests Forever Facility is an opportunity to strengthen forest protection and halt deforestation if it ensures robust monitoring and full participation of frontline communities.”

    Abigail Aguilar, Global Plastics Campaign Manager, Greenpeace USA said: “A strong Global Plastics Treaty that cuts plastic production and provides a pathway for sustainable development in the Global South could provide a defining signal that BRICS nations are listening to the most affected in the developing countries and are ready to step up where others have faltered.

    “With the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations on the horizon in Geneva, BRICS nations must commit to an ambitious agreement that will cut plastic production, secure finance and technology needed for a just transition and protect our people, climate and the planet.”

    Mariana Andrade, Ocean Campaigner, Greenpeace Brazil said: “The High Seas Treaty’s ratification is within touching distance and Global South leadership has helped drive forward this crucial agreement. But ahead of the next International Seabed Authority meeting, we are watching whether that leadership extends to defending the ocean from unilateral deep sea mining.

    “Reckless exploitation of the deep sea would betray the principles of multilateralism that BRICS countries must champion. This is a moment where they must commit to international law, science-based decision-making and the common heritage of humankind.”

  • MIL-OSI NGOs: Sky-high protest: activists confront fossil gas in Croatia during heatwave emergency

    Pula, Croatia – Greenpeace Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) activists from six countries have climbed 135 meters (the height of a skyscraper) up a towering fossil gas installation platform known as a Jackup rig, to stage a protest in Pula on the Croatian Adriatic Sea. They unfurled two banners saying “Stop Gas” and “Start Future”, illustrated with solar and wind energy. Greenpeace is calling for an immediate ban on all new fossil fuel projects in the European Union and a fossil gas phase-out by 2035 through a swift, fair transition to renewable energy.

    As a record-breaking heatwave is sweeping across Croatia and much of Europe and North Africa, activists from Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Poland, Germany and Slovenia climbed up the platform at the port of Pula before unfurling their 45-metre long banners. This action comes just days after the first legal step in the groundbreaking anti-SLAPP case to protect freedom of expression and stop abusive lawsuits initiated by Greenpeace International in the EU, after US oil company Energy Transfer’s attempt to silence the organisation.

    Eszter Matyas,  Greenpeace CEE campaigner with the European Fossil-Free Future campaign said: “No matter how hard fossil fuel companies try to silence us, we will keep fighting their destructive business. Europe is the fastest-warming continent, and fossil gas is fuelling that crisis. Today, we’re taking a stand at a pivotal site: a facility used to explore and develop new gas drilling projects in the Adriatic. No matter where it comes from, fossil gas is driving us deeper into climate chaos. We have a message to EU leaders: stop greenlighting new fossil gas infrastructure. Phase out fossil gas by 2035.”

    Petra Andrić, Greenpeace Croatia climate campaigner, added: “Floods, heatwaves and wildfires are sweeping the globe as the oil and gas industry drives us deeper into the climate crisis. Croatia must stop funding outdated fossil fuel infrastructure and invest in solar, wind, energy storage and energy efficiency. Every delay tightens our dependence on dirty, dangerous fuel and makes the transition more difficult and expensive. We’re fighting for a greener, fairer future with clean, sustainable energy for all. That future starts now.”

    Greenpeace’s Fossil-Free Future campaign is currently on an expedition across Europe with the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise to spark debate about Europe’s energy system and question its dependence on fossil gas. Campaigners are confronting the fossil fuel industry and promoting a fair phase-out of fossil gas, through a just transition to renewable energy that allows everyone to meet their energy needs at a decent price, without harming people, the planet or the environment.[1] In March, the Arctic Sunrise was in Belgium to denounce how Europe’s reliance on fossil gas fuels geopolitical instability, while leaving households burdened with skyrocketing energy costs. Last week in Italy as the latest European heatwave began, activists protested the toxic alliance on fossil gas between US President Trump and Italy Prime Minister Meloni.

    LANZHOU, July 4 (Xinhua) — Northwest China’s Gansu Province issued red alerts (the highest) on Friday due to increased risks of geological disasters and flash floods.

    In the afternoon, the Gansu Provincial Natural Resources Administration and Meteorological Administration jointly issued a red alert for geological disasters caused by adverse weather conditions, warning of a high probability of geological hazards such as landslides, collapses and mudslides.

    Earlier in the day, the provincial flood and drought control headquarters issued two separate red alerts for flash floods.

    Rainfall totals are forecast to reach between 100mm and 180mm by 11pm on Friday, with peak rates expected to be between 30mm and 70mm per hour.

    Heavy rains have forced the Maijishan Scenic Area in Tianshui City, home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Maijishan Grottoes, to be temporarily closed to visitors from Thursday morning, local authorities said.

    China has a four-tier weather warning system, with red representing the highest level of danger, followed by orange, yellow and blue. –0–

    Today, the Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State (Rural Development), announced up to $105 million in federal funding for three high-speed Internet projects being delivered by Saskatchewan Telecommunications (SaskTel). These projects will bring high-speed Internet access to 6,522 households in 35 rural and remote communities across central and northern Saskatchewan, including over 4,800 Indigenous households.

    The Government of Canada’s investment is provided through the Universal Broadband Fund, a program designed to ensure that Canadians in rural, remote and Indigenous communities have access to reliable high-speed Internet.

    The government remains on track to meet its goal of providing high-speed Internet to 98% of Canadian households by 2026, and 100% by 2030.     With just a week to go until Oasis’ much anticipated homecoming gigs in Heaton Park, the stage is set for a massive music-filled take-over of the city as MCR Live ’25 celebrates a mammoth summer of live music in Manchester.

    The long-awaited Oasis gigs anchor a summer full of major live music events in Manchester’s parks, public spaces and other venues – all the way through to the end of August.

    An incredible 1.3 million music tourists are expected to visit the city during this time for unmissable performances from some of the biggest artists on the planet.

    To help celebrate this sensational summer of sound, MCR Live ’25 will see music-themed markets, pop-up shops, a festival bar and impromptu performances, as well as fabulous guitar-themed artworks and exhibitions take over the city’s streets, squares, shop windows and other venues.

    Councillor Garry Bridges, Deputy Leader Manchester City Council, said: “Manchester is already known the world over for our music and our fantastic music scene that draws people to the city from every corner of the globe.  

    “With 1.3m music tourists expected in Manchester this summer along with the historic homecoming Oasis dates in Heaton Park coming up next week, the economic impact on the city will be significant – with bars, clubs, restaurants, shops and hotels all set to benefit.

    “We want everyone – Mancunians and visitors alike – to be able to enjoy this mammoth summer of live music so we’re going all out to celebrate the massive contribution that music makes to the city with a fantastic programme of music themed events and activities across the city for everyone to get involved in all summer long.”

    Today (Friday 4 July) saw the official opening of the MCR Live Hub at Piccadilly Gardens, which alongside drinks and eats also promises a programme of live music and DJs on its stage throughout the summer.

    Music for the Senses will take over the streets with a trail of amazing artworks, murals, mosaics and installations celebrating the people, places, moments and instruments of Manchester’s music scene. At the heart of Music for the Senses is Guitar Street, an interactive installation on a to-be-revealed city centre street by Manchester artist Liam Hopkins, known as Lazerian. Liam’s artwork will lovingly repurpose broken guitars, donated by members of the public.
    Meanwhile, you can also discover up to 50 donated guitars which have been transformed into one-of-a kind individual artworks by professional artists. You’ll spot them displayed in shop windows and venues across the city, alongside some extra special guitars donated by Manchester musicians and other famous faces.
    At the end of the trail the guitars will be auctioned to raise money to support grassroots music projects and venues throughout Greater Manchester.

    ALMATY, July 4 (Xinhua) — In 2024, the volume of investment in fixed assets in Kazakhstan from all sources of financing amounted to 19,461.3 billion tenge (about 37.49 billion U.S. dollars), an increase of 8 percent compared to the previous year, the Bureau of National Statistics (BNS) of Kazakhstan reported on Friday.

    According to the bureau, the main share of investment in fixed capital in 2024 will be in industry – 40 percent /including mining and quarrying – 18.7 percent, manufacturing – 10.7 percent/, real estate transactions – 18.8 percent, transportation and warehousing – 18.6 percent, and education – 5.9 percent.

    “Budget funds accounted for 21.6 percent of the total volume of investments in fixed assets, while increasing by 40.4 percent compared to 2023. The share of the banking sector in financing the real sector of the economy in the total volume of investments in fixed assets is 4 percent, other borrowed funds – 11.5 percent,” the BNS report states. –0–

    The Province is stepping up its fight against hate-motivated offences by increasing the staffing capacity of the B.C. hate crimes unit, led by the B.C. RCMP.

    “Any form of hate, whether it be through criminal acts or racist language, has no place in British Columbia,” said Garry Begg, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “In response to rising acts of hate in our communities, our government is ensuring the B.C. hate crimes unit has the resources needed to investigate these crimes to the fullest extent possible to hold perpetrators to account.”

    The Province is investing more than $734,000 to support the B.C. hate crimes unit by adding five additional RCMP officers and one intelligence analyst, increasing the unit’s capacity from two officers to a team of eight. The funding is part of the Province’s $230-million investment into the provincial police service.

    In British Columbia, police reported hate crimes rose by 23% from 2022 to 2023. Specifically, hate crimes motivated by race or ethnicity increased by 12%, those linked to religion surged by more than 50% and incidents related to sexual orientation jumped by 43%.

    “Expanding this team will make a positive impact right across the province, strengthening the ability to address hate-related crimes, while also leading proactive initiatives that make our communities stronger,” said Chief Supt. Elija Rain, officer in charge of the B.C. RCMP major crime section. “A larger diverse team helps us meet demands from our diverse communities and build on important partnerships with law enforcement, community groups and faith-based organizations.”

    The funding will strengthen investigations throughout the criminal-justice process by ensuring police are equipped with the necessary information and required evidence for prosecutors to conduct thorough charge assessments. It will also support court processes through expert testimony and help support witnesses and victims of hate-motivated crimes.

    Hate crimes are criminal acts driven by extreme bias or hatred toward a person based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other similar factor. The B.C. hate crimes unit plays a critical role in addressing these offences and works with communities to promote prevention and raise public awareness to help people understand and report a hate crime.

    “When people are targeted because of who they are, they deserve to know that law enforcement is in their corner and that those responsible will be thoroughly investigated and held accountable,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “This expanded support reflects our government’s commitment to standing up to hate and protecting people’s rights. It’s an investment in a safer, more inclusive B.C., where everyone can live with dignity and without fear.”

    Public Safety Canada (PSC) is providing $4 million to the B.C. government through the Shift B.C. program, which focuses on preventing radicalized violence by offering support to individuals at risk. Funding is supporting eight police agencies and two non-profit agencies to build capacity and enhance operations to address public-order challenges, improve hate-crime reporting, bolster the safety and security of places of worship, and respond to threats that are motivated by extremism against elected public officials.

    The office of the PFDJ in the Gash Barka Region has provided training on social science to youth workers in the region. The training was conducted from 23 June to 2 July in Barentu.

    The objective of the training was to enhance the productivity and overall awareness of the youth working in PFDJ and Government institutions. The training was attended by 139 participants, including 68 females, composed of youth Government workers and PFDJ organizations.

    The consultation, which closes on 23 July 2025, follows the publication of the Affordable Housing Policy Guidance 2025 report discussed at the April meeting of the Planning Committee.

    As we honor 249 glorious years of American independence, we celebrate these rights upon which our nation was built—and we pay tribute to the titans of freedom who risked their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to secure our sovereignty.

    In June 1776, Thomas Jefferson began drafting what would later become one of the core foundational documents of the United States.  After 17 days of writing and several days of deliberations, revisions, and scrutiny over every line and every phrase, on July 4, 1776, Jefferson and his fellow signatories formally adopted the Declaration of Independence.

    Though the consequences of their actions were far from certain, the Second Continental Congress pressed forward with fierce determination, clarity of purpose, and an unshakable faith in God’s divine providence.  Our Founding Fathers boldly proclaimed “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Eleven new employees were hired after the expansion and the company plans to hire ten more. Through the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit, Alberta’s government has issued Beretta Farms a tax credit of $1,228,735.

    The tax credit provides a 12 per cent non-refundable, non-transferable tax credit when businesses invest $10 million or more in a project to build or expand a value-added agri-processing facility in Alberta. The program is open to any food manufacturers and bio processors that add value to commodities like grains or meat or turn agricultural byproducts into new consumer or industrial goods.

    Beretta Farms’ facility in Lacombe is a federally registered, European Union-approved harvesting and meat processing facility specializing in the slaughter, processing, packaging and distribution of Canadian and United States cattle and bison meat products to 87 countries worldwide.

    Alberta’s agri-processing sector is the second-largest manufacturing industry in the province and meat processing plays an important role in the sector, generating millions in annual economic impact and creating thousands of jobs. Alberta continues to be an attractive place for agricultural investment due to its agricultural resources, one of the lowest tax rates in North America, a business-friendly environment and a robust transportation network to connect with international markets.

    • Since 2023, there are 16 applicants to the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit for projects worth about $1.6 billion total in new investment in Alberta’s agri-processing sector.
    • To date, 13 projects have received conditional approval under the program.
      • Each applicant must submit progress reports, then apply for a tax credit certificate when the project is complete.
    • Beretta Farms has expanded the Lacombe facility by 10,000 square feet to include new warehousing, cooler space and an office building.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: New Health care Investments in Melville and Esterhazy

    As a part of her Saskatchewan summer tour, Rural and Remote Health Minister Lori Carr is visiting Melville and Esterhazy. While in both communities, Minister Carr will meet with local leadership, health care staff and visit several health care facilities.

    “By visiting local health care facilities, I am better able to learn from front line health care workers more about the conditions for patients, residents and staff,” Carr said. “I appreciate the opportunity to talk with our dedicated frontline health care workers and personally recognize them for the hard work they do.”

    Government is investing over $1.3 million in capital and equipment upgrades in both Melville and Esterhazy over the next two years to ensure safe and comfortable health care facilities for patients, residents and staff.  

    As part of government’s investment, projects in Melville include new flooring at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Home, work estimated to cost $100,000. Additionally, water systems estimated at $160,000 are scheduled to be replaced at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Home. At the Melville & District Health Centre, flooring work is planned and is estimated to cost $150,000.

    Government previously invested $145,000 in 2024-25 to replace windows at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Home. 

    In Esterhazy, early planning work is underway to replace the St. Anthony’s Hospital and Centennial Special Care Home with an integrated facility with $250,000 allocated this year. Additionally in 2026-27, there are plans to replace sewer lines at St. Anthony’s Hospital, and sanitary waste piping at Centennial Special Care home, projects which combined are estimated at $650,000. 

    In 2024-25, the Saskatchewan Health Authority invested in a ceiling mount digital radiology room with a wall stand. The equipment is currently being installed at St. Anthony’s Hospital and will be operational later this year. Equipment funded by St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation and valued at $358,000 was also recently added. This included: a telemetry system, a chemistry analyzer with interface, a hematology analyzer with interface, a module for a lab information system and an automated medication dispensing system.

    “I want to thank the St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation for their contributions to improve health care in their community,” Carr said.

These projects will drive emissions reductions, create jobs and catalyze new opportunities for Canadian innovation.

    Energy Innovation Program — Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Research, Development and Demonstration Call

    Funding under this call supports the research, development and demonstration of next-generation carbon capture and storage technologies that have the potential to significantly reduce the costs of capturing and storing carbon.

    Project name: Bow Valley Carbon – Storage Demonstration Project
    Recipient: Bow Valley Carbon Cochrane Limited Partnership (a collaboration between Inter Pipeline Ltd. and Entropy Inc.)
    Location: Calgary and Cochrane, Alberta
    Funding amount: $10,000,000
    Description: This project will design and install a CO2 compression and conditioning system, transportation pipeline and sequestration well. Together, these components will aim to capture 40,000 tonnes of CO2 /year of emissions, equivalent to taking approximately 12,255 cars off the road annually, from the Interpipeline Cochrane Natural Gas Extraction Plant. The data and findings will be shared with academia to support further research on carbonate sequestration.

    Project name: The Wabamun Hub CO2 Storage Optimization Project
    Recipient: Enbridge Inc.
    Location: Calgary, Alberta
    Funding amount: $4,000,000
    Description: This project will characterize deep saline reservoirs in Central Alberta. It supports Enbridge’s Open Access Wabamun Hub being developed north and west of Edmonton to provide dedicated, utility-scale CO2 transportation and storage solutions serving CO2 capture projects including Heidelberg Materials’ Edmonton capture project.

    Project name: Enhance’s Origins CCS Hub: Development and Regulatory Work
    Recipient: Enhance Energy Inc.

    Funding amount: $5,000,000
    Description: This project will use a wide range of subsurface data to support the Origins CCS Hub. This approach, which targets a pressure-depleted saline aquifer within a Canadian carbonate reservoir, has the potential to support hub development in novel geologies without access to the Basal Cambrian Sandstone.

    Location: Nisku, Alberta

    Description: This project will investigate and test modifications to diesel engines to enable cost-effective, small-scale carbon capture using exhaust gas recirculation. This approach has the potential to develop economically viable capture processes for distributed emission sources in hard-to-decarbonize industries such as locomotive rail transport, marine shipping and heavy-duty trucking.

    ISLAMABAD, July 4 (Xinhua) — A five-storey residential building collapsed in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi on Friday, killing seven people and injuring at least 10 others, local police said.

    Law enforcement officials told Xinhua that more than 30 people were trapped under the rubble after a building collapsed in Karachi’s Lyari area and rescue operations were underway to free the remaining people.

    Heavy equipment is being used to clear away debris from the dilapidated building, which authorities had previously declared unsafe, police said, and residents of two adjacent buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.

    Eyewitnesses said the building collapsed after a series of tremors that residents mistook for an earthquake, adding that the sudden collapse was preceded by intermittent shaking for several hours.

    Following the incident, police cordoned off the area and all victims were taken to a local hospital, several of whom are reportedly in critical condition.

    A high-level commission has been set up to investigate the incident. –0–

    Energy Secretary approves largest Irish Sea offshore wind farm

    Mona offshore wind farm given the green light by the Energy Secretary.

    More clean, homegrown, secure energy will be delivered for the British people as the Energy Secretary today (Friday 4 July) gives the green light to the largest offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea. 

    It is estimated the Mona Offshore Wind Farm could generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 1 million British homes, providing a major boost for the national mission to become a clean energy superpower. 

    Situated in the Irish Sea, the project will power growth across the country by building supply chain opportunities, with the developer launching a portal where local companies can offer their skills to deliver the project, boosting local communities in Wales and across the UK. 

    The developer estimates it will support thousands of jobs, contributing to the up to 100,000 jobs supported by the offshore wind sector in Great Britain by 2030.  

    Jobs are expected to include engineers and maintenance operations during the construction phase, driving industrial renewal in proud manufacturing communities as part of the Plan for Change.  

    One year since taking office the government has made progress on delivering for the British people as part of the Prime Minister’s mission to become a clean energy superpower. This year’s actions lay the foundations for clean power by 2030 – all part of the mission to get energy bills down for good. 

    In its first year this government has consented new clean energy projects that can generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of almost 2 million homes. Mona will add to this by powering the equivalent of more than a million homes.

    Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: 

    This government was elected to take back control of our energy- and in our first year we have shown that the clean power revolution is here to stay. 

    Whether it’s offshore wind, solar or nuclear, we are backing the builders not the blockers so we deliver the clean homegrown power this country needs to protect family finances through our Plan for Change.

    Mona homes powered estimate: Our homes powered estimate reflects the equivalent number of homes that could be powered based on an estimate of the annual generation from the Mona offshore wind farm, assuming generating capacity equivalent to its maximum grid connection (1.5 GW). The estimate is calculated using household consumption estimates sourced from the published Subnational Electricity and Gas Consumption Report and the 2024 average offshore wind specific load factors published in the department’s Energy Trends statistical publication (table 6.1). The actual generation will vary based on site specific factors.
