On Saturday, April 26th, 2025, from 8 AM to 1 PM, the USP Samoa Campus will host a Pop-up Market dedicated to bringing the community together and supporting the MNRE’s 3 Million Tree Campaign.

    This family-friendly event invites community members to bring the family to the campus and will have the opportunity to receive free tree seedlings as part of the campaign efforts to encourage tree planting across Samoa.

    The USP Pop-up Market promises a vibrant atmosphere with an array of attractions including fresh vegetables, root plants, fresh flowers, kombucha drinks, BBQ food stalls, and handmade crafts by local artisans. Additionally, there will be fun activities for children like a bouncy castle and more.

    The Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, today (21 May) “warmly” welcomed last week’s announcement by United States President Donald Trump on the cessation of sanctions on Syria, as well as similar steps recently announced by the European Union and the United Kingdom.

    Briefing the Security Council remotely from Damascus, Pedersen said, “I have long called for bold steps on sanctions, as have millions of Syrians in and outside the country.”

    The Special Envoy said there “are indeed historic developments,” which “hold major potential to improve living conditions across the country and to support the Syrian political transition,” as well as giving the Syrian people “a chance to grapple with the legacy of misrule, conflict, abuses and poverty from which they are trying to emerge.”

    Pedersen said, “we also know that Syria faces significant structural challenges, with an economy ravaged by over a
    decade of war and conflict, and a host of other destabilizing factors. Revitalizing a devastated economy will require from the interim authorities sustained actions including on overall economic reform and governance standards across the financial system, and this will need international support.”

    He also noted “alarm at renewed Israeli airstrikes in Syria in the reporting period, including during the violence in Druze areas and close to the presidential palace.”

    Such attacks, Pedersen said, “are unacceptable and must cease,” and Syria’s “sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity must be respected.”

    He said, “there are clearly diplomatic possibilities and these must be prioritized.”

    Also briefing remotely, the Geneva Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva (OCHA) Director, Ramesh Rajasingham, said, “16.5 million Syrians need protection and humanitarian assistance. Over half of the population is food insecure. Nearly 3 million people face severe food insecurity.”

    Rajasingham noted that “more than 670,000 men, women and children have been displaced since November last year. This includes some 15,000 people displaced between 30 April and 6 May from Rural Damascus due to the violence in Druze-majority areas.”

    At the same time, he said, “since December, over 1 million internally displaced people have returned to their areas of origin, including some 330,000 people from camps in north-west Syria.”

    Highlighting the alarming funding situation, he warned that as of today, only 10 percent has been funded of the $2 billion needed to reach 8 million people from January through June of this year.

    United States representative John Kelley told the Council that President Trump pledged sanctions relief, will give Syrians, “a chance at greatness,” adding that Trump “wants to see Syria and the entire region thrive.”

    Kelley said, “that’s why he’s made a bold decision on Syria with the hope the new government will take this opportunity to rebuild and take the country from being a source of instability to a source of stability.”

    For his part, Syria’s representative Riyad Khaddour said, “today, we are witnessing the international community’s eagerness to embrace this pivotal moment re-opening its doors to Syria and engaging actively with it. This clearly culminated with the visit of the President of the United States to the region in which included key milestones and constructive decisions, most notably, President Trump’s courageous decision announced from Riyadh – a location of great symbolic significance – to lift sanctions on Syria.”

    Khaddour said, “the new Syria is in sincere pursuit of becoming a state of peace and partnership, not a battleground for conflicts or a platform for foreign ambitions. The new Syria welcomes constructive cooperation initiatives based on mutual interests and mutual respect.”

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Press release – Parliament supports proposals to simplify EU carbon leakage instrument

    The proposed changes to the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) are part of simplification efforts to reduce the administrative burden for SMEs and occasional importers.

    Parliament today endorsed the Commission’s proposal, which is a part of the “Omnibus I” simplification package presented on 26 February 2025. MEPs adopted only technical amendments for clarification purposes and supported a new de minimis mass threshold of 50 tonnes. This would exempt the vast majority (90%) of importers − mainly small and medium-sized enterprises and individuals − who import only small quantities of CBAM goods. The CBAM environmental objectives remain achievable, as 99% of total CO2 emissions from imports of iron, steel, aluminium, cement and fertilisers would still be covered by the rules.

    For the imports covered, the changes also simplify the authorisation process for declarants (parties wishing to import goods subject to the CBAM), the calculation of emissions and the management of CBAM financial liability, while strengthening anti-abuse provisions.

    After the vote, rapporteur Antonio Decaro (S&D, IT) said: “The CBAM is a crucial instrument to help the EU prevent carbon leakage and incentivise climate action outside the EU. I am therefore glad that Parliament decided not to reopen other provisions of the CBAM legislation. This approach enables us to simplify matters for companies without dismantling or weakening the CBAM. We will continue to work quickly to bring legal clarity and certainty to all CBAM stakeholders.”

    Next steps

    MEPs adopted the text by 564 votes in favour, 20 against and with 12 abstentions. Parliament is now ready to start negotiations with Council on the final shape of the legislation.

    Background

    The EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism is the EU’s tool to equalise the price of carbon paid for EU products operating under the EU emissions trading system (ETS) with that of imported goods, and to encourage greater climate ambition in non-EU countries. In early 2026, the Commission will assess whether to extend the scope of the CBAM to other ETS sectors at risk of carbon leakage.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Press release – Deal on patent rules exception to ensure the supply of critical products

    The new rules will ensure that the EU will be able to secure the necessary supply of crisis-relevant products and technologies that are otherwise protected by patents.

    European Parliament and EU government negotiators reached an agreement on new legislation ensuring availability of crisis-relevant products, such as vaccines or chips, during emergencies. According to the new bill, the EU will be able to issue special permission for the production of patent-protected goods during cross-border emergencies, without needing the authorisation of the rights-holder. This would allow the immediate production, for example, of vaccines or therapeutics also by other companies than the one holding the patent.

    This special permission, known as compulsory license, can be issued by the European Commission in clearly defined emergencies, such as a cross-border health crisis or internal market emergency, with specified scope, territorial coverage and duration. It would be used only as a last resort and only in cases where a voluntary agreement between rights-holder and licensee could not be reached. The new law will not apply to defence-related products. In the process of launching the compulsory license procedure, the Commission will have to identify all related intellectual property rights and their holders.

    Right to compensation and fines for breaches

    The rights-holder would also be entitled to appropriate remuneration for the use of their patent by the licensee. The amount and timeframe for payment would be determined by the Commission and specified in the compulsory license. The regulation does not require the disclosure of trade secrets.

    The new rules also clarify obligations for licensees, e.g. not to produce more products than a set maximum amount and to label the products manufactured under compulsory license. Should a licensee breach the agreed obligations, such as producing more products than allowed or exporting them from the EU, the Commission can impose a fine not exceeding €300,000 and in the case of small or medium-sized enterprise not exceeding €50,000.

    Consulting advisory body, rights-holders and licensees

    A competent advisory body, or if such an organisation does not exist, an ad-hoc advisory body will issue its non-binding opinion on the need to grant an EU compulsory license. Rights-holders and licensees will also be consulted during the process and notified of the termination or expiry of a compulsory license.

    Next steps

    Once formally approved by the Parliament as a whole and the member states, the regulation will enter into force one day after its publication in the Official Journal.

    The European Commission presented its proposal on compulsory licensing in April 2023, as part of the EU patent package focusing on completion of the Single Market for patents. It was its reaction to the European Parliament resolution of November 2021, where it called on the Commission to analyse the possibility of compulsory licencing at the EU level.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season: CPSC Tips to Keep Americans Safe

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 1 marks the start of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers along the Atlantic Seaboard and the Gulf of America about the increased risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, fires and electric shock after hurricanes and severe storms hit.
    “These storms bring along with them power, devastation and destruction of their own,” said CPSC Acting Chairman Peter Feldman. “However, the dangers associated with these storms do not end when the winds and rain subside. I urge all Americans to follow CPSC’s safety tips this hurricane season to do their best to be safe before, during and after the storms.”
    Consumers need to be especially careful when storms knock out electrical power. CO poisoning from portable generators can kill whole families in minutes. CO is called the invisible killer because it is colorless and odorless, and its poisoning can happen in only a matter of minutes. Sadly, people can become unconscious even before recognizing symptoms of nausea, dizziness or weakness. 
    Unfortunately, CO poisoning claims the lives of hundreds of people each year. When we see these deaths occur from generators when the power is out, it makes the storm’s effects that much more devastating. To mitigate their risk of CO poisoning, consumers should follow these safety tips to protect their families, especially during the Atlantic hurricane season lasting from the beginning of June to the end of November. 
    Loss of Power—Using a Generator Safely

    NEVER use a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed spaces, even with the doors open. Opening doors or windows will not provide enough ventilation to prevent the buildup of lethal levels of CO.
    Use portable generators outside only, at least 20 feet away from home and any other buildings. Don’t use a generator on a porch or in a carport; it’s too close to your home and puts your family at risk of CO poisoning. Direct the generator’s exhaust away from your home and other buildings where someone can enter. Close windows and seal off vent openings that are near the generator or in the path of its exhaust.
    Follow portable generator instructions about electrical shock hazards in inclement weather. These instructions may include use of an NFPA-rated non-combustible generator tent or may state to wait to use until rain passes.
    Regularly check and maintain your portable generator to ensure that it will work properly when needed. Read and follow all labels, instructions and warnings on the generator and in the owner’s manual.
    Look for portable generators that have a CO shut-off safety feature. This safety feature automatically shuts off the generator when high levels of CO are present around the generator. Models that are certified to the latest PGMA G300-2023 and UL 2201 safety standards are estimated to reduce deaths from CO poisoning by 86% and 100% respectively. 
    UL 2201 certified models have reduced CO emissions in addition to the CO shut-off feature.

    Check CO and Smoke Alarms

    Working smoke and CO alarms save lives! Install working CO and smoke alarms (battery-operated or with battery backup) on every level and outside sleeping areas at home. Interconnected alarms are best; when one sounds, they all sound. 
    Make sure smoke alarms are installed inside each bedroom.  
    Test CO and smoke alarms monthly to make sure they are working properly, and replace batteries, if needed. Never ignore an alarm when it sounds. Get outside immediately. Then call 911.

    Dangers with Charcoal and Candles

    Never use charcoal indoors. Burning charcoal in an enclosed space can produce lethal levels of carbon monoxide. Do not cook on a charcoal grill in a garage, even with the garage door open.
    Use caution when burning candles. Use flashlights or battery-operated candles instead. If using candles, do not burn them on or near anything that can catch fire. Never leave burning candles unattended. Extinguish candles when leaving the room and before sleeping.

    If Your Home Floods—Dangers with Wet Appliances

    Look for signs that your appliances have gotten wet. Do not touch wet appliances that are still plugged into an electrical source. 
    Before using your appliances, have a professional gas or electric company representative evaluate your home and replace all gas control valves, electrical wiring, circuit breakers, and fuses that have been under water.

    Dangers with Gas Leaks: 

    If you smell or hear gas leaking, leave your home immediately and contact local gas authorities from outside the home. Do not operate any electronics, such as lights or phones, before leaving.

    In the quiet court corridors of Machakos, a storm has been brewing—one not about legal technicalities, but about seeds, sovereignty, and the survival of a farming culture.

    On 20 May, fifteen smallholder farmers from across Kenya stepped into the High Court to challenge the constitutionality of Kenya’s Seed and Plant Varieties Act (Cap. 326), a law they say criminalises their very way of life. The case, supported by Greenpeace Africa, Seed Savers Network, and the Biodiversity and Biosafety Association of Kenya (BIBA), could redefine the country’s agricultural future.

    At the centre of the petition is a clause that forbids the exchange, sale, or use of uncertified seeds, including traditional and indigenous varieties. Farmers argue that these laws, enforced with steep fines and even jail time, target the country’s poorest growers and sever ties to centuries-old seed practices.

    “This law criminalises the legacy of our grandmothers,” said Justus Mwololo, one of the petitioners. “We’re not just defending seeds—we’re defending a whole history of resilience.”

    The courtroom was packed with advocates and farmers alike, many in traditional attire, bearing placards that read: “Our grandmothers fed nations, now you call them criminals?” Outside, the air was charged with chants and song as a peaceful procession marched through Machakos town.

    Inside, the arguments were precise and passionate.

    “The Constitution guarantees the right to culture and food,” said Alvin Munandick, appearing on behalf of Greenpeace Africa. “Seed sharing is not a crime. It’s an ancestral practice.”

    “What these provisions allow is shocking,” added Wambugu Wanjohi, representing the Law Society of Kenya. “Seed inspectors are empowered to raid farmers’ homes and seize property. This is a violation of privacy, property rights, and human dignity.”

    The case has rallied broad support from civil society. According to Ann Maina, National Coordinator of BIBA, this legal battle is about much more than seeds.

    “It’s about food security. About biodiversity. About resisting a top-down system that tries to put our food under lock and key,” she said.

    Daniel Wanjama, from the Seed Savers Network, pointed out that over 80% of seeds used by Kenyan farmers come from informal, farmer-managed systems.

    “To criminalise this is to criminalise the backbone of our food system,” he warned. “And it puts us all at risk of hunger.”

    The government has yet to formally respond to the petitioners’ claims, but the stakes are already clear. If the court rules in favour of the farmers, it could upend a seed policy landscape long dominated by private agribusiness and shift the power back to communities.

    “This case is a fight for the right to exist as a farmer,” said Penninah Ngahu, another petitioner. “If the government wants more seeds, why not invest in us? We’ve been growing food for generations.”

    As the court adjourned, the date of judgment, 27 November 2025, was etched into the minds of everyone present. For the farmers, it marks not just a legal verdict but a test of Kenya’s constitutional commitment to cultural heritage, food rights, and ecological justice.

    “Seed is life,” said Claire Nasike Akello, food scientist and food sovereignty advocate. “And life cannot be patented, regulated out of reach, or stolen from the hands that feed us.”

    Increased funding to help young people away from crime.

    Projects supporting young people at risk of being drawn into criminal activities are to receive up to £26 million over the next three years.

    The Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities programme uses money recovered from seized criminal assets to provide crucial support to young people who may be at risk of becoming involved in offending or antisocial behaviour.

    Successful projects in the programme’s next stage (2026-2029) will deliver a range of activities and support for those aged 10 to 25, to help tackle some of the underlying causes of antisocial behaviour and criminal activity. Projects will also provide access to trusted adults who young people can confide in.

    Since 2008 CashBack for Communities has invested £156 million and supported around 1.4 million young people across all 32 local authorities in Scotland.

    Visiting a project based at Glasgow’s Easterhouse Sports Centre, Minister for Victims and Community Safety Siobhian Brown said:

    “CashBack for Communities is inspiring. It turns the proceeds of crime into life-changing opportunities for the thousands of young people who take part in projects across Scotland every year.

    “Over the course of the next three years of the programme, we are providing £26 million to organisations to deliver diversionary and support work with children and young people. By learning new skills and boosting their confidence, it helps young people in our communities who are at risk of becoming involved in crime be diverted from that path and realise their potential.

    “Since its inception more than a million young people have received support to turn their lives around, with opportunities provided into employment, education or volunteering. CashBack’s success is also testament to the work of law enforcement partners in disrupting organised crime groups – bringing them to justice and seizing their ill-gotten gains, using them to deliver a successful programme across the country.”

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Apr inflation up 2%

    Overall consumer prices rose 2% year-on-year in April, larger than the corresponding increase in March, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.
     
    Netting out the effects of the Government’s one-off relief measures, underlying inflation was 1.3%, also larger than that in March.
     
    Compared with a year before, price increases were recorded in April in the following categories: electricity, gas and water; transport; housing; miscellaneous services; meals out and takeaway food; miscellaneous goods; and alcoholic drinks and tobacco.
     
    Meanwhile, year-on-year decreases were logged in clothing and footwear; durable goods; and basic food.
     
    The Government said that inflation pressure remained largely moderate in recent months, with price pressures on various major components staying contained in general.
     
    Travel-related charges climbed amid the Easter holidays which started in April, resulting in an increased underlying consumer price inflation rate in the month, it explained.
     
    The Government expects that overall inflation should remain modest in the near term, while pressures from domestic costs and external prices should stay broadly in check.

He has held several positions at Millenia Capital since 2021, including Advisor and General Partner. Meyer held multiple positions at LendingClub and LendingClub Bank from 2017 to 2023, including Head of the Public Policy and Government Affairs Team and Vice President of Regulatory Strategy and Policy. He held multiple positions at PriceWaterhouseCoopers from 2011 to 2017, including Managing Director for Financial Services Advisory, Director of Regulatory Strategy, and Chief of Staff for Financial Services Regulatory. Meyer held multiple positions at the New York Banking Department from 2009 to 2011, including Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the Superintendent. This position requires Senate confirmation, and the compensation is $100 per diem. Arkatov is a Democrat.

    Peter Brierty, of Highland, has been appointed to the Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission. Brierty has been a Retired Annuitant at the San Bernardino County Fire Department since 2025. He was a Project Manager at Pacific Heritage, Inc. from 2017 to 2023. Brierty held multiple positions at the San Bernardino County Fire Department from 1978 to 2013, including Fire Marshal, Assistant Chief, and Division Manager. Brierty is the President of the Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California and a Member of the Fire and Burn Foundation at the San Bernardino County Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science from California State University, San Bernardino. This position requires Senate confirmation, and the compensation is $100 per diem. Brierty is a Democrat.

    Tom Hallinan, of Modesto, has been appointed to the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists. Tom has been a Deputy District Attorney at the Stanislaus County District Attorney Office since 2024 and a Partner at White Brenner LLP since 2012. Hallinan earned a Juris Docter degree from Lincoln School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from California State University, Fresno.     Amanda Steidlmayer, of Woodland, has been appointed to the California Architects Board. Steidlmayer has been the Director of Professional Development at the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine since 2022. She was a Program Manager for the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine from 2018 to 2022. She was a Strategic Initiatives Coordinator for the University of California, Davis Graduate Studies Office from 2013 to 2018.     On the occasion of the LIMA 2025 exhibition in Langkawi, Thales’ commitment to Malaysian defence is once again recognised by the Malaysian Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces. With a steady economic growth outlook, the Malaysian government is keen to advance the country’s military modernisation and Thales remains at the forefront of this, with the Memorandum of Understanding & Letter of Award received for equipment ranging from radars to radios.

    I. Two additional GM400α long-range radars for superior situational air awareness

    To strengthen the air surveillance and air defence capabilities of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), Thales will supply two additional long-range air surveillance GM400α radars, following the ceremony held on Day 3 of LIMA 2025, in presence of Francois-Xavier Boutes, Country Director of Thales Malaysia and YBhg Datuk Lokman Hakim bin Ali, Secretary General from the Ministry of Defence, and witnessed by YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, Minister of Defence. The award of these two additional radars underscores the trust held by the RMAF in Thales’ radar technology, following the first GM400α contract signed at the end of 2023. Thanks to its high mobility, high availability, easy upgradeability and seamless integration, the GM400α offers armed forces with a valuable tool to gain tactical advantage, detecting all types of threats early and providing precious minutes for decision-making and action (515km range). Today more than 270 Ground Master field-proven family air surveillance radars have been sold worldwide.

    In Malaysia, Thales will partner Weststar Group once again to deploy the radars in line with the operational requirements of the RMAF. Thales will also engage in the Transfer of Knowledge and Train-the-Trainer courses delivered under the Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP), while strengthening its installed base in Malaysia for long-range surveillance radars. By building local expertise, Thales will enhance the efficiency of radar maintenance, enhance the autonomy of the RMAF and ensure timely on-ground maintenance support close to the end-users. Thales’ radar expertise in Malaysia runs deep, as the country was also the launch customer for the precursor GM400 radar in 2009.

    II. Enhancing tactical and radio communications for Malaysia

    To further deepen its expertise in radio and tactical communications, Thales has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with partner ADS Sdn. Bhd. Signed on Day 2 of LIMA between Brig Gen Dato’ Abdul Hadi bin Abdul Razak (R), ADS and Nicolas Bouverot, VP Thales Asia, the collaboration will see both parties working on the latest digital technologies for handheld radios and other tactical communications.

    III. A helicopter training simulator marks a first contract with Royal Malaysian Police (RMP)

    Pascale Sourisse, CEO, Thales International witnessed the signing of an LOA, together with Malaysian partner Novatis Resources to deliver a Reality-H® AW139 Full Flight Simulator (FFS) to be used for pilot training with the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP). The Thales Reality H Full Flight Simulator is the world’s most advanced commercial helicopter simulator, and will be qualified to meet Level D standard, the highest level of qualification for a simulator. This marks a first engagement with the RMP, where pilots of the Police Air Wing Training Academy and other government agencies including the fire brigade and coast guard can benefit from realistic and immersive training, customised to the Malaysian environment and terrain.

    IV. New leadership for Thales in Malaysia

    To drive the growing business in Malaysia, Florian Riou has been appointed Country Director for Thales in Malaysia and Brunei and will effectively take on the role on 1st of July 2025. Florian brings close to 18 years of professional experience in foreign trade policy and trade compliance, with roles held in the French Ministry of Economics and Finance and Safran Group. With Thales since 2017, Florian’s most recent role was as Group Trade Compliance Director for Thales, based in France.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Funding for Major City Projects Welcomed

    Funding from the Scottish Government to assist major projects in Dundee is being welcome by senior councillors.

    Awards will be used to support development of the Dundee Museum of Transport at the former Maryfield tram depot and assist efforts to improve the Lochee area of the city.

    £1 million is coming from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund for the museum of transport. (link to museum news release on website)

    Meanwhile, the Scottish Government’s Vacant & Derelict Land Investment Programme is awarding £695,000 towards the ongoing Lochee Placemaking Project.

    This will support work to improve and unlock a number of vacant sites along Lochee High Street.

    Scottish Government investment will allow the addition of a major new water and drainage system in the High Street to allow development of social housing.

    Councillor Steven Rome, Dundee City Council convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure, said: “I am delighted that the Dundee Museum of Transport is receiving another major award to help in the journey to redevelop the former tram depot into a new attraction..

    “There is real excitement building around the project and I would like to congratulate all connected with the museum for this significant step forward.”

    Depute convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Cllr Siobhan Tolland, added: “I welcome funding from the Scottish Government which will help us to invest in the future of Lochee.

    “This will assist in transforming currently derelict sites making them viable for the development of much needed social housing in the area.”

    “The Lochee Placemaking project, which will be taken forward with Scottish Water, will provide drainage solutions at locations on Lochee High Street, Bank Street and the former Bright Street church.

    “It will allow us to take forward positive projects for the area and its people.”

    The Lochee Placemaking Project is already underway with refurbishment of two shop units, while preparation work is taking place for a major new mural at Bank Street.

    A new landscaped area will be provided at the corner of Bank Street and High Street and a heritage trail will be established.

    Construction works are expected to start in autumn and will continue into early next year.

    Support has come from the Lochee Residents and Tenants association and Love Lochee who have raised funds for the heritage trail and mural and assisted the council in efforts to attract funding.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated, laid the foundation stone, and dedicated development projects worth over Rs 26,000 crore in Bikaner, Rajasthan, emphasizing transformative infrastructure growth and a resolute stance against terrorism. The event, attended by dignitaries including Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Kisanrao Bagade, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Arjun Ram Meghwal, saw participation from 18 states and union territories, both in-person and online.

    Addressing the gathering, PM Modi highlighted the unprecedented pace of infrastructure development over the past 11 years, noting that India now invests six times more in infrastructure compared to previous years. He cited iconic projects like the Chenab Bridge, Sela Tunnel, Bogibeel Bridge, Atal Setu, and Pamban Bridge as symbols of India’s modernization drive. The Prime Minister also emphasized railway advancements, including the operation of Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat trains, the elimination of unmanned level crossings, and the modernization of over 1,300 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Over 100 such stations, reflecting local art and heritage, have been completed, with examples like Mandalgarh in Rajasthan and Thawe in Bihar showcasing regional culture.

    PM Modi underscored that these infrastructure projects drive employment and economic growth, benefiting workers, farmers, and youth. In Rajasthan, Rs 70,000 crore has been invested in road infrastructure over the past decade, with Rs 10,000 crore allocated for railway development this year alone. He flagged off a new Bikaner-Mumbai train and highlighted projects in health, water, and electricity to boost urban and rural progress. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has benefited over 40,000 Rajasthan households, eliminating electricity bills and enabling income through solar power.

    The Prime Minister also praised Rajasthan’s industrial growth, driven by Chief Minister Sharma’s policies, positioning the state as a hub for petroleum and food processing industries. He noted the near-completion of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the Amritsar-Jamnagar economic corridor, which will enhance connectivity and industrial development.

    On water management, PM Modi recalled Maharaja Ganga Singh’s legacy and emphasized ongoing irrigation and river-linking projects like the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Link, which will benefit multiple districts. He also inaugurated and laid the foundation for 25 state government projects, including 750 km of state highways, nursing colleges, and water supply initiatives under AMRUT 2.0.

    Addressing national security, PM Modi condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, reaffirming India’s zero-tolerance policy. He detailed Operation Sindoor, a swift response that destroyed nine terrorist hideouts within 22 minutes, showcasing the armed forces’ “Chakravyuh” strategy that forced Pakistan to its knees. The Prime Minister outlined three principles: India’s response to terrorism will be decisive, nuclear threats will not intimidate, and no distinction will be made between terrorists and their state sponsors. He warned that Pakistan would face severe military and economic consequences for any further attacks, emphasizing that trade and talks would focus solely on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

    GUIYANG, May 22 (Xinhua) — Two mountain landslides occurred in southwest China’s Guizhou Province on Thursday, trapping more than a dozen people.

    The incidents occurred in Changshi Township and Gowa Township, Dafang County, the province, at around 03:00 and 09:00, respectively. According to preliminary estimates by local authorities, two people are buried under the rubble in Changshi Township, while more than 10 people were buried in six residential buildings in Qingyang Village, Gowa Township, where eight families lived.

    Police, emergency response teams and firefighters quickly arrived at the scene to conduct search and rescue operations. They are equipped with life detectors, drones and other necessary equipment. Sniffer dogs are helping them in their search.

    The rescue operation in Gowa parish is hampered by steep slopes and mountainous terrain. Local authorities said the exact number of people trapped under the rubble has yet to be determined.

    China’s Ministry of Emergency Management immediately launched a Level 4 geological disaster response and dispatched a task force to the scene to lead the rescue efforts.

    The department demanded that the situation at the site of the emergency be assessed as soon as possible, rescue operations be organized in a scientifically sound manner, and secondary disasters be prevented. -0-

    Regulator to investigate Seven Dials Playhouse over financial concerns

    The Charity Commission has launched a statutory inquiry into Seven Dials Playhouse due to ongoing concerns over its long-term financial viability.

    Seven Dials Playhouse’s purpose is to advance education and the arts for public benefit through research, discussions, seminars and vocational training. It also has a purpose to provide facilities for the arts (especially theatre), and to produce educational plays.  

    The Commission has been engaging with the charity since 2024 regarding its decision to sell its Central London property, wider concerns around its finances, and how the charity is being managed. 

    The Commission continued its engagement to further assess financial concerns as part of a regulatory compliance case. As part of this engagement, the charity has provided several revised drafts of a business plan to the Commission. However, this has failed to reassure the regulator of the charity’s long-term financial viability and has therefore raised concerns about significant risks to the charity’s funds. 

    The regulator has now launched a statutory inquiry, enabling it to use its full suite of regulatory powers to investigate Seven Dials Playhouse. 

    The Inquiry will examine if the trustees have complied with their legal duties in respect of the administration, governance and management of the charity, and in particular:  

    • the charity’s financial management, including the trustees’ plans for its future financial sustainability  

    • whether the charity is being managed in accordance with its governing document and is operating in furtherance of its objects  

    • whether there has been misconduct and/or mismanagement by the trustees 

    The scope of the inquiry may be extended if additional regulatory issues emerge during the Commission’s investigation.

    The new British High Commissioner to Namibia, Neil Bradley, presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

    The newly appointed British High Commissioner to Namibia, Mr Neil Bradley officially presented his Letter of Credence to President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at State House on Wednesday, 7 May 2025, marking the formal beginning of his diplomatic mission in the country.

    The presentation of credentials is a significant diplomatic tradition, symbolising mutual respect and the commitment to continued cooperation between nations.

    Mr Bradley’s appointment comes at a time of growing collaboration between the UK and Namibia, particularly in areas such as trade and economic growth, climate change and education.

    As High Commissioner, Mr Bradley will lead the UK’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with Namibia, working closely with government, civil society, and the private sector.

    No booze, no banquets, no bouquets. China has barred alcohol, luxury dishes, and cigarettes from official meals, part of a sweeping crackdown on extravagance in public life. Government cars must forgo flashy upgrades, and meeting rooms must be free of ornamental plants and fancy backdrops.

    The new rules, set out in the newly revised Regulations on Practicing Thrift and Opposing Waste in Party and Government Organs, are the latest effort by China’s top leadership to rein in official perks and promote restraint.

    First introduced in 2013 as a follow-up to the Party’s landmark eight-point rules, an initiative launched in late 2012 to curb official misconduct and restore public trust, austerity guidelines were reaffirmed this May amid a broader campaign to reinforce discipline and compliance across the Party’s 100 million members.

    These updated guidelines set out more detailed rules than ever before for Party and government officials — targeting public funds, official travel, receptions, vehicle use, meetings, and office space.

    Extravagant banquets and heavy drinking were once fixtures of official life in China, customs so entrenched that phrases like “no banquet is complete without alcohol” and “business is done over drinks” became part of the vernacular. But such excesses, long resented by the public, have since increasingly come under scrutiny.

    As part of a renewed push for ensuring discipline, China has now imposed a sweeping ban on alcohol at official receptions, while cigarettes and luxury dishes are also off the table.

    Analysts said the ban is unlikely to meaningfully affect the industry of baijiu, a fiery Chinese liquor once a staple at government banquets.

    Xiao Zhuqing, an industry expert, noted that since the rollout of the Party’s eight-point rules just over a decade ago, government-related consumption of baijiu has shrunk considerably. Today, official purchases account for less than 5 percent of the market, limiting the new regulation’s impact on the sector.

    Excessive drinking not only erodes the image of government officials but can also end in tragedy. In a recent case that drew national attention, a county-level official in central China’s Henan Province died after consuming alcohol at a midday banquet during a training seminar in March. Nine other officials present at this banquet were later disciplined, demoted, or dismissed.

    Under the new rules, officials on domestic trips are barred from accepting cash gifts, souvenirs, or local specialties. For overseas trips, private jet travel is off-limits, while officials are no longer allowed to add extra stops or extend their stays abroad without prior authorization.

    Officials are also barred from using public cars for private errands or claiming personal vehicle expenses from public funds. These new rules call for government fleets to prioritize new energy vehicles, part of a wider push to reduce emissions.

    Party and government bodies are under orders to trim back meetings to only what is essential. Gone are the days of lavish conference setups — this means no floral arrangements and no elaborate staging. Holding official gatherings at scenic resorts is strictly forbidden.

    The new rules have received largely positive feedback online. Wang Xuming, a scholar and retired official from the Ministry of Education, praised them as “detailed and pragmatic” on microblogging site Weibo.

    Grassroots officials have also voiced their support. Some have long borne the health costs of official banquets, such as fatty liver and high blood pressure, widely seen as occupational hazards in a work culture where “drinking twice a day felt like part of the job.”

    As part of its austerity drive, China’s central government has been steadily trimming its public expenses on official receptions, vehicles, and overseas travel for years.

    The 2025 budget includes 6.12 billion yuan (about 851.7 million U.S. dollars) for such expenses, down 322 million yuan from last year. Reception spending alone is capped at 302 million yuan, 13 million less than in 2024.

    The savings from reduced official spending, according to the regulations, will be redirected toward development priorities and public welfare.

    As China continues its campaign against official extravagance, the once-routine perks of public office, including opulent banquets and taxpayer-funded junkets, have quietly receded.

    The government’s austerity push is rippling through society at large. Frugality has begun to replace excess as a social value. Restaurants are downsizing portions — and it has become common for diners to take leftovers home.

    This culture shift extends to major life events. Costly wedding and funeral banquets, once seen as obligatory displays of status, are giving way to simpler, more modest affairs, reflecting a broader embrace of restraint inspired from the top down.

    May 22 marks the International Day for Biological Diversity, which helps draw attention to the need to preserve the richness of flora and fauna.

    Preservation of biodiversity is one of Rosneft’s key objectives in the regions where it operates. The company and its subsidiaries also implement numerous grant programs to support scientific and applied projects aimed at studying and protecting rare species of animals and plants.

    Earlier this year, the East Siberian Oil and Gas Company supported a grant project to assess the populations of rare predators in Evenkia. As part of the project, employees of the Tunguska State Nature Reserve will study how the current state of the Evenk taiga affects the populations of bears, wolves, sables, and lynxes of a species that has not previously been seen in the region. Based on the research results, a set of recommendations will be developed for organizing rational nature management in the region. Earlier, with the support of Vostsibneftegaz, the Siberian Federal University published the Red Book of Evenkia. The publication contains brief information about the appearance, habitats, lifestyle, and numbers of 45 rare and small animals in the region.

    Oilmen of RN-Vankor supported projects on the creation of a teaching aid on the key species-bioindicator of Arctic ecosystems – the wild reindeer of Taimyr, the study of the current state of the musk ox population on the peninsula, as well as the study of the state and well-being of the populations of the main commercial fish of the Taimyr reservoirs. Research of commercial fish populations is extremely important, first of all, for the indigenous peoples of the North, for whom fishing is an integral part of their traditional way of life.

    With the support of the Samara group of Rosneft enterprises – Samaraneftegaz, Kuibyshev, Novokuibyshevsk and Syzran Oil Refineries, Novokuibyshevsk Petrochemical Company, Novokuibyshevsk Oil and Additives Plant in the Samarskaya Luka National Park, ornithologists are implementing a project aimed at preserving the white-tailed eagle. This is the largest and rarest bird in the Volga region, the species is listed in the Red Book of Russia and the International Red Book. Monitoring of nesting sites has been organized on the territory of the national park, which has made it possible to identify areas with a special nature conservation regime and take measures to control the tourist flow.

    Tyumenneftegaz supports projects aimed at preserving the ecosystem of Lake Solenoye. For three years, scientists from Tyumen State University conducted comprehensive ecological and biological research. As a result, more than 450 species of animals and plants were discovered, some of which are rare and protected. Oil workers also improved the coastal area, laid eco-trails, and installed containers for household waste.

    With the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz, scientists from the Tobolsk Scientific Station of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are studying the population of forest reindeer in the Tyumen Region. In 2022-2024, large-scale monitoring was carried out, camera traps were installed, which confirmed the presence of the endangered animal in the region. A set of measures has been developed to preserve the habitat and create conditions for the preservation and subsequent growth of the population.

    Earlier, with the support of the enterprise, the Scientific and Analytical Center for Rational Use of Subsoil named after V.I. Shpilman monitored the condition of 390 large lakes in the region, and scientists from the Tyumen Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences developed an electronic database of rare plants in the Uvatsky District, which included data on more than 50 species. In addition, during the summer, scientists will conduct research on river water samples and fish, which are the food source for birds. The information collected will form the basis for developing a set of measures to protect this rare bird, which is listed in the Red Book of Russia as vulnerable.

    During the implementation of the Sakhalin-1 project, annual monitoring of the Okhotsk population of gray whales on the north-eastern shelf of Sakhalin Island is carried out. Since 1997, the program has included census and photography of whales, acoustic monitoring, observation of the behavior of mammals, and study of their food supply. All research is carried out jointly with the country’s leading scientific organizations.

    As your average New Zealander struggles to pay the bills, the Government’s 2025 Budget piles austerity on the least well-off, and misreads the public mood. Recent polling commissioned by the Better Taxes for a Better Future campaign showed the vast majority of New Zealanders supported increased spending on public services, and only 3% were in favour of cuts.

    By limiting its operating allowance to $1.3b to reduce debt, following the introduction of  unaffordable tax cuts last year and the failure to advance other meaningful revenue gathering options, the Government has manufactured the need for cuts in spending on public services that New Zealanders rely upon on a daily basis.

    “The most significant contributor to the Government’s $5.3bn in savings required to reach its arbitrary operating allowance are the lowest paid working women through the scrapping of the pay equity settlements,” says Glenn Barclay, Better Taxes campaign spokesperson.

    “Many other good programmes have also been sacrificed to allow the Government to get away with such a miserly operating allowance.”

    “The total cost to mainly low paid working people from scrapping pay equity of $12.8bn over 4 years represents one of the largest wealth transfers in modern history, and will have a real cost for the lives of some of the least well off in New Zealand.”

    Other items in the Budget are worth commenting on.

    “While a modest increase in the abatement threshold for Working for Families is to be welcomed, it will be paid for by increasing the abatement rate and means testing the first year of Best Start payments. Here we see the Government giving to young families with one hand, while taking away with the other.”

    “The flagship Investment Boost allowing for accelerated depreciation on new assets to be deducted from taxable income, while a useful tool to grow GDP, implemented in this untargeted way stands to benefit monopolistic companies like supermarket chains, electricity generators and banks at the expense of the collective revenue pool,” says Glenn Barclay.   “With the substantial cost of $1.7 billion per year, it would have been much better to use this tool to focus on areas such as advanced manufacturing or green technology.”

    “Similarly the halving of Government contributions to KiwiSaver is shortsighted, when we ought to be  supporting lower income earners and young people  to grow their retirement savings.  On the other hand the Government has significantly expanded the ability for SuperGold card holders to claim rates rebates. It looks like a case of valuing the priorities of older property owners over the  future retirement savings of today’s workers.”

    “The Budget reflects choices about what the Government values and how it’s going to pay for those things.  This budget shows the government does not value the work of the least well-off in New Zealand, who are paying for its austerity,” says Glenn Barclay.

    “It is inescapable that we need to generate more revenue to pay for the public goods New Zealanders value, like public healthcare, education, transport and housing. It is wrong to pretend that we can deliver the kind of society New Zealanders want now and in the future by constantly reducing the collective pool,” says Glenn Barclay.

    “Successive governments have failed to ensure we’re collecting enough revenue to meet our needs and ensure those who can afford to contribute more, make that contribution. Polling indicates New Zealanders want increased investment in public services and think that the wealthy should be contributing more,” says Glenn Barclay.

    “Today’s Budget fails to grapple with that challenge  to respond to what the New Zealand public wants.  With this Budget the government continues to ask more of those who have the least.”

    “We call on the Government to consider common sense taxes that many other countries already have, like a capital gains tax and a wealth tax, so we have enough revenue to allocate to the public goods that enable all New Zealanders to thrive.”

    Defendant Admits Concealing 50% Ownership of $7B Defense Contracting Business to Evade Taxes

    A former defense contractor pleaded guilty today to tax crimes related to his scheme to defraud the United States and evade taxes on income that he earned from his contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense.

    The following is according to court documents and statements made in court: Douglas Edelman founded and owned 50% of Mina Corp. and Red Star Enterprises (Mina/Red Star), a defense contracting business that received more than $7 billion from contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense to provide jet fuel in the United States’ post-9/11 military efforts in Afghanistan and the Middle East.

    Working with others, Edelman engaged in a lengthy scheme to hide his Mina/Red Star profits to evade U.S. taxes, including by concealing his income in undisclosed foreign bank accounts, creating false documents and making false statements that one of his co-conspirators — a French citizen residing abroad and without U.S. tax obligations — founded and owned Mina/Red Star.

    For example, when the company became profitable in 2005, Edelman began taking distributions which he deposited into Swiss bank accounts, primarily at Credit Suisse, in the name of other companies he owned. In 2008, Credit Suisse informed Edelman that he had to either close his accounts or disclose them to U.S. authorities. Rather than come into compliance with his tax and reporting obligations, Edelman closed his accounts and opened new ones at Bank Julius Baer in Singapore in the name of a nominee entity, the beneficiaries of which were purportedly Edelman’s daughters. He then directed the subject income he earned from Mina/Red Star to those bank accounts.

    In 2010 the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs began investigating allegations of corruption in connection with Mina/Red Star’s contracts with the Department of Defense. As part of this inquiry, the subcommittee became interested in the identity of Mina/Red Star’s owners. At this time, Edelman had not filed U.S. tax returns to report the millions of dollars he had earned from Mina/Red Star and had not paid U.S. taxes on his income.

    Rather than disclose his ownership, Edelman caused his attorneys to tell Congress a false story that a French co-conspirator who had no U.S. tax or reporting obligations founded and co-owed Mina/Red Star with another individual. To corroborate the false story, Edelman and a co-conspirator caused false and backdated paperwork to be created.

    To continue the scheme, Edelman conveyed the false story about Mina/Red Star’s ownership to other arms of the U.S. government, including to the Department of Defense during contract negotiations in 2010 and 2011, to the IRS in a 2016 application to the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program, and to the Justice Department in a 2018 presentation.

    In conjunction with his 2016 application to the IRS’s Voluntary Disclosure Program, Edelman filed false tax returns for several prior years that only reported income from gifts or purported consulting payments, continuing to conceal the millions he had earned from his company. On the returns, he  also concealed profits he had earned from a separate business to provide internet service to members of the armed forces at Kandahar Air Base in Afghanistan.

    Instead of paying the taxes that he knew he owed, Edelman used the money to fund his lifestyle and additional investments. He invested in a music television franchise in Eastern Europe, a land venture in Tulum, Mexico, and a farm in Kenya, and purchased property around Europe, including a home in Ibiza, Spain, and a townhouse in London.

    Edelman faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison for each count to which he has pleaded. He also faces a period of supervised release, restitution, and monetary penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

    Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Karen E. Kelly of the Justice Department’s Tax Division, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro for the District of Columbia, and Executive Special Agent in Charge Kareem Carter of the Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Washington, D.C., Field Office made the announcement.

    Special agents from IRS-CI’s International Tax & Financial Crimes specialty group, a team based out of Washington, D.C., that is dedicated to uncovering international tax crimes, along with the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction are investigating the case. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs assisted in the investigation. Also providing assistance were His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs of the United Kingdom; the Joint Chiefs of Global Tax Enforcement (J5), which brings together the taxing authorities of Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States; and authorities from Belize, Israel, and Cyprus.

    The Government of the Kingdom of Spain arrested and extradited Edelman to the United States. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs also provided substantial assistance in securing Edelman’s arrest and extradition.

    Assistant Chief Sarah Ranney and Trial Attorney Ezra Spiro of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua Gold for the District of Columbia are prosecuting the case.

    Britain’s defence industry received yet another boost this week as 700 high-skilled jobs are set to be created following a £200 million investment from European defence company MBDA at its site in Bolton.

    The announcement follows new Security and Defence Partnership signed at this week’s EU-UK Summit which will open the door to the EU’s new weapons scheme, leading to significant opportunities for the UK’s world-leading defence industries, driving growth and supporting 430,000 British jobs and livelihoods.

    This is the latest win for the UK’s leading defence and advanced manufacturing sectors and is further proof the Government’s Plan for Change is working.

    The UK is one of the largest exporters of defence equipment in the world, and in 2023 the UK won defence contracts worth £14.5 billion.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: Refugees in Kenya at risk of worsening hunger as WFP faces critical funding shortfall

    NAIROBI – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today warned that refugees in Kenya are at risk of heightened levels of food insecurity as critical funding shortages force the agency to reduce food assistance to the lowest levels ever recorded.

    Around 720,000 refugees supported by WFP in Kenya will from June receive an in-kind food ration of just 28 percent and all cash assistance will halt, unless additional funding is received.

    Over the past five years, the number of refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya has increased by over 70 percent – from around 500,000 to 843,000 – as people have fled conflict and drought in neighbouring countries like Somalia and South Sudan. But, despite generous support from many donors, growing needs among refugees has outstripped the availability of funds.

    “WFP’s operations supporting refugees in Kenya are under immense strain,” said Baimankay Sankoh, WFP’s Deputy Country Director in Kenya. “With available resources stretched to their limits, we have had to make the difficult decision to again reduce food assistance. This will have a serious impact on vulnerable refugees, increasing the risk of hunger and malnutrition.”

    Many refugee households in Kenya are already experiencing high levels of food insecurity. The Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate among refugee children and pregnant or breastfeeding women in Kenya is above 13 percent. A GAM rate over 10 percent is classed as a nutrition emergency, particularly in refugee settings, meaning urgent intervention is required to prevent life-threatening complications from malnutrition. WFP nutrition programmes for children and mothers ended in late 2024 due to a lack of resources.

    In 2024, WFP, in partnership with Kenya’s Department of Refugee Services (DRS) and UNHCR, provided monthly food assistance – mostly as a mix of cash and in-kind food – to 720,000 refugees in Dadaab and Kakuma camps and Kalobeyei settlement. WFP has repeatedly adjusted rations sizes to align with available funds. The latest reduction in February gave refugees 40 percent of a full food ration based on a daily recommended intake of 2,100 kcal. 

    WFP also supports refugees and host communities with programmes that foster self-reliance and integration by supporting access to fields for crops, building water infrastructure for irrigation and livestock, and constructing food markets to help the community sell their produce. These programmes continue. 

    “Less support will force refugees to make heartbreaking choices — parting with essential belongings, withdrawing children from school, or even a return to home countries despite the dangers,” said Sankoh. “Food assistance is a vital safety net, and we remain committed to doing all we can to support refugees who are trying to rebuild their lives in safety.”

    WFP urgently requires US$44 million to provide full rations and restore cash assistance for all refugees through August.

    The Government has failed Māori and ignored its Te Tiriti obligations with its Budget, says Te Mātāwaka, the Green Party’s Māori and Pasifika Caucus. 

    “This Budget has no ambition for Māori and ignores te Tiriti o Waitangi. We deserve better and can do much better,” says Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson.

    “Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a promise of protection, for our whānau and our whenua. A promise this Government has broken before and has broken again today with this Budget.

    “This Budget builds on the Government’s legacy of the Treaty Principles Bill, the disestablishment of Te Aka Whai Ora and the repeal of 7AA.

    “Budget 2025 strips the Māori Development fund by nearly $10 million, cuts funding to Whakaata Māori even deeper and leaves Whānua Ora with even less than what it was given in the last Budget which we know was far from enough. The cuts made to Māori housing today are also an absolute disgrace.

    “Christopher Luxon has clearly given up on even pretending to care about Māori, failing to show up at Waitangi and now failing to provide anything of substance for our communities with this Budget.

    “A Green Government will uphold te Tiriti o Waitangi in everything we do. We are here to honour the promises Aotearoa was founded upon.

    “We will fill the gaps in our health system that have failed our people across generations by bringing back Te Aka Whai Ora and rolling out free GPs across Aotearoa, especially in hard-to-reach communities. 

    “Our Hoki Whenua Mai policy means land back for tangata whenua and protection against further acquisitions from the Crown.

    “We can do all of this and more by making this a one-term Government, by demanding the rich pay their fair share, and by embedding te Tiriti o Waitangi as the poutokomanawa of our whare ora,” says Marama Davidson.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: ‘Growth Budget’ growing inequality and fuelling climate crisis

    Budget 2025 represents a significant step backwards for Aotearoa, with the Government adding fuel to the fire when it comes to the climate and inequality crises, says the Green Party. 

    “This Budget is bad news for people and planet,” says Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson.

    “Christopher Luxon clearly has no ambition for this country and not a care in the world when it comes to the climate crisis. This Budget will see more and more people living on the street, it will mean thousands more families struggling to put food on the table and it will result in more children growing up in poverty.

    “With cuts to Kiwi Saver, housing for the ‘right people,’ instead of all people and taking away money from whānau with babies, this Government has well and truly put its cards of cruelty on the table. We do not have to accept this and we can fight for a future where everyone has what they need on a planet with thriving nature and a stable climate.

    “A Green Government will do things differently. Instead of opening gas fields in the middle of the climate crisis, pushing people into poverty and punishing them for it, we will rapidly reduce emissions, reduce the cost of living and improve our quality of life,” says Marama Davidson.

    Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick says, “This is even worse than a BS budget. Not only is the Government shredding public services and giving up on reducing child poverty, they’re pouring oil and gas all over the climate crisis fire.

    “Resilient energy supply means investing in distributed renewable energy, not burning public money to subsidise new gas fields and fossil fuel executive profits.

    “Somehow even more bewildering, these very moves could compromise our Free Trade Agreements with the UK and EU. So much for ‘responsible economic managers.’

    “Last week, the Greens released our budget to show how we can reduce the cost of living, increase the quality of life and rapidly reduce climate changing emissions.

    “Today, the Government said ‘yeah,nah,’ to a liveable future for all of us,” says Chlöe Swarbrick.
