  • MIL-OSI USA: Warren Demands Health and Human Services Nominee Erase Ethics Conflicts with Pharmaceutical, Biotech Companies

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Massachusetts – Elizabeth Warren
    May 13, 2025
As RFK Jr.’s Deputy, O’Neill would have insight and influence over FDA approvals
“Your relationships with biomedical companies regulated by HHS will raise concerns about your impartiality in this role”
    Text of Letter (PDF)
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) wrote to Mr. James O’Neill, nominee for Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), asking him to recuse himself from matters involving companies he has worked with, given many of those companies may seek the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulatory approval during his tenure. Senator Warren also asked Mr. O’Neill to commit not to take a job in the industries regulated by HHS for at least four years after leaving office and not to lobby HHS for at least four years after leaving office. The Senate Finance Committee will vote on advancing O’Neill’s nomination on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
O’Neill, a “close ally” of Trump-backer Peter Thiel, once managed one of Thiel’s venture capital firms, Mithril Capital Management, where he invested in biotech companies developing medical robots, diabetes treatments, antibody technologies, and more. Some of these companies are now seeking FDA approval. After O’Neill left the company, the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the firm for potentially defrauding its investors.
As Deputy HHS Secretary, O’Neill would have insight into and influence over the FDA’s approvals process and could potentially sway HHS’s decision-making to favor companies with which he has worked. O’Neill advises and serves on the board of ADvantage Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company developing an Alzheimer’s drug that will require FDA approval. He has agreed to recuse from matters related to ADvantage for one year (or two years if he receives a bonus from the company), but “after just one or two years, [his] relationship with the company will remain fresh enough to raise serious impartiality concerns.” Given that, Senator Warren urged, “To mitigate even the appearance of a conflict of interest, you should agree to recuse for four years from [matters related to the company].”
Former HHS officials, including former FDA Commissioner Robert Califf and NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli, agreed to recuse themselves from their former clients’ matters for four years — beyond the two-year recusal required by the Biden administration.
O’Neill’s ties to the pharmaceutical industry also raise concerns about his post-government employment prospects. As a result, Senator Warren asked him to commit not to work for any company he regulates or otherwise interacts with during his time at HHS for four years after leaving government service.
If O’Neill were to take a job in the industry, “the public would reasonably question whether the decisions [he] made in office were influenced by the prospect of future compensation from a company [he] regulated,” said Senator Warren.
“The public may also question whether you were cashing in on your executive-branch connections and government expertise to help your new company benefit from insider information to skirt rules that you helped oversee or to curry favor with HHS and/or its subagencies,” the senator continued.
Senator Warren reminded O’Neill that both former FDA Commissioner Califf and former NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli agreed to these post-government employment restrictions. Even HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who refused to give up some of his egregious conflicts, still agreed not to work for a drug company after leaving office.
Finally, to mitigate concerns about the revolving door of former government officials lobbying the agencies they once led, Senator Warren pushed O’Neill to commit not to lobby HHS for four years after leaving office, similar to the agreements made by multiple Biden appointees, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Internal Revenue Service Chief Counsel Marjorie Rollinson, and Treasury Assistant Secretary for Investment Security Paul Rosen.
“The rampant revolving door of former government leaders lobbying the agencies they once led, while their government relationships remain fresh, erodes Americans’ faith in the federal government,” said Senator Warren.
Senator Warren asked O’Neill to answer these ethics commitment requests on the record, including whether he plans to accept any future payment from the companies he’s tied to, by May 14, 2025.
Senator Warren has been a leader on enforcing government ethics standards and pressing nominees to address conflicts of interest:
In March 2025, Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote to Marty Makary and Jay Bhattacharya, nominees to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), respectively, asking them to address their conflicts of interest ahead of their confirmation hearings.
In February 2025, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Tim Kaine (D-Va.) called on Mr. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to recuse himself from former clients’ and employers’ particular matters and commit to not lobbying HHS after his tenure as Secretary.
In February 2025, following the Senate Finance Committee vote to advance the nomination of Mr. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Senator Elizabeth Warren gave remarks regarding the nominee’s continued conflicts of interest.
In February 2025, Senators Warren and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Ranking Member on the Senate Finance Committee, wrote to Mr. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., pressing him to urgently resolve his serious conflicts of interest before the committee vote Wednesday morning.
In January 2025, following pressure from Senate Democrats, Mr. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. agreed to amend his flawed ethics agreement (see Warren QFRs at the end of Part 2 and start of Part 3).
In January 2025, at a hearing of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Elizabeth Warren questioned Mr. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, about his dangerous conflicts of interest and record of profiting from anti-vaccine conspiracies.
In January 2025, ahead of Mr. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s confirmation hearing for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a 34-page letter detailing her concerns with his nomination and asked him to answer 175 questions ahead of his hearing before the Finance Committee.
In January 2025, Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote to Trump Transition Co-Chairs Howard Lutnick and Linda McMahon, urging them to make the White House’s ethics pledge for incoming appointees as strong as possible and outlining specific provisions to do so. The letter came at the end of the first week of confirmation hearings for President-elect Trump’s cabinet nominees, many of whom have been found to have serious conflicts of interest and massive wealth.
In December 2024, Senators Elizabeth Warren, Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) wrote to Dr. Mehmet Oz, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, raising stark concerns about his advocacy to eliminate traditional Medicare and his deep financial ties to the private health insurers that would benefit from that move.
In November 2024, in response to the news that President-elect Donald Trump selected Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services, Senator Elizabeth Warren released a statement calling him a “danger to public health, scientific research, medicine, and health care coverage for millions of Americans.”
In January 2022, Senator Elizabeth Warren secured a commitment from then-FDA Commissioner nominee Dr. Robert Califf to recuse himself from matters involving his former employers and clients for four years, two years longer than what was required in the Biden administration’s Ethics Pledge. He also agreed not to seek employment with or compensation, including as a result of board service, from any pharmaceutical or medical device company that he interacts with during his tenure as FDA Commissioner for four years after completing his government service.
In December 2020, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Jayapal introduced the Anti-Corruption and Public Integrity Act, the most ambitious anti-corruption legislation since Watergate, which would outlaw corrupt revolving-door schemes so that public servants are serving the public – not the financial interests of themselves or giant corporations.
In March 2020, President Trump signed the bipartisan Presidential Transition Enhancement Act into law, which included major provisions of Sen. Warren’s (D-Mass.) Transition Team Ethics Improvement Act.
In September 2019, the Senate passed a key provision of the Transition Team Ethics Improvement Act introduced by Senators Warren and Tom Carper (D-Del.) to enhance the ethics requirements that govern presidential transitions.
In November 2016, as President Trump prepared to take office, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Chairman Cummings requested a GAO investigation of the chaotic Trump transition. In September 2017, Government Accountability Office (GAO) released the results of the investigation, finding that the Trump transition team ignored advice from the Office of Government Ethics and failed to follow past precedents regarding ethics and presidential transitions.

  • MIL-OSI USA: House Democrats’ Litigation Task Force Challenges Trump’s Unlawful, Chaotic Imposition of IEEPA Tariffs

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District of New York)

Washington, D.C. —  Late Monday, House Democrats’ Litigation and Rapid Response Task Force led 148 Members of Congress in filing an amicus brief challenging President Donald Trump’s sweeping and chaotic tariffs unlawfully imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The lawmakers’ brief stands up for Congress’s Article I exclusive legislative power to impose tariffs and regulate commerce, and argues that IEEPA does not give the President the power to impose reckless, on-again-off-again tariffs, which have wreaked havoc on the U.S. economy.

The amicus brief was led by Task Force Co-Chairs Joe Neguse and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin; House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries; and Ranking Members Gregory Meeks of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Richard E. Neal of the Committee on Ways and Means. It was filed in the matter of Oregon, et al., v. Trump, et al. which was brought forth by 12 States’ Attorneys General.

“Donald Trump promised to lower the cost of living on day one, but instead is raising prices, crashing our economy and driving us toward a recession. He has now imposed and backed away from his reckless tariffs and tax increases on multiple occasions, each time without authorization from Congress. This is unlawful, and it is unleashing harm on hardworking American taxpayers. I am thankful to Rep. Raskin, Rep. Meeks, Rep. Neal, Assistant Leader Neguse and the Litigation Working Group and Rapid Response Task Force for their efforts in leading House Democrats in our strong opposition to this illegal assault on everyday Americans,” said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

“What the Trump White House called ‘Liberation Day,’ most households across America remember as the day economic chaos was unleashed by this administration’s reckless tariff policies,” said Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse. “Today, House Democrats are taking action, pushing back against the continued harm being inflicted on everyday Americans and reinforcing the constitutional authority of Congress.”

“The Constitution gives Congress—not the President—the power to regulate commerce with other nations and to impose tariffs. Donald Trump is abusing emergency powers under IEEPA, which doesn’t mention tariffs, to impose sweeping and chaotic tariffs without any authorization from Congress. Trump’s wayward, on-again, off-again approach to tariffs imposed under IEEPA is terrible for the U.S. economy and damaging to American businesses and consumers. We’re going to court to defend Congress’ powers under Article I against executive usurpation and abuse,” said Ranking Member Jamie Raskin.

“President Trump has abused IEEPA to impose sweeping tariffs that have hurt American families and businesses. IEEPA has never been used this way — and the so-called national emergencies behind these tariffs are baseless. It’s time for the courts to recognize this as flagrant abuse of executive power and end Trump’s chaotic trade war,” said Ranking Member Gregory Meeks.

“The Constitution is clear: Congress—not the president—holds the power to regulate trade,” said Ranking Member Richard E. Neal. “Congress never intended for IEEPA to be a blank check for chaos or a tool for economic retaliation against our allies. House Democrats are making clear: no president can hijack trade policy for political theatrics at the expense of American workers and families.”

The Constitution gives Congress, not the President, the authority to impose tariffs, and the President can only raise tariffs if Congress has clearly delegated its authority to him. Although IEEPA (enacted in 1977) grants the president authority to impose sanctions, block foreign assets, and regulate economic transactions in response to “unusual and extraordinary threats” originating abroad, it is not a tariff statute and has never been used that way. Congress knows how to delegate tariff authority and has clearly done so on a number of occasions. When Congress does delegate such authority, it imposes substantive, procedural, and temporal limits on the president’s power in order to avoid economic chaos and protect the American people.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Haley Stevens Leads Bipartisan Introduction of Bill to Help Michigan Businesses Adopt 21st Century Quantum Cybersecurity Measures

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11)

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D–Mich.) led the bipartisan introduction of the Post-Quantum Cybersecurity Standards Act with Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (R–N.Y.).

Quantum computing will revolutionize the landscape of cybersecurity, ensuring everyone from federal agencies to local school districts can deploy updated cybersecurity standards. This bill will help Michigan businesses more effectively and rapidly adopt post-quantum cybersecurity standards to protect them from cyber attacks. By creating a more efficient system for the government to help businesses and other organizations implement new cybersecurity technology, the Post-Quantum Cybersecurity Standards Act will help protect them from malicious cyberattacks.

“The future of cybersecurity and secure quantum computing is vital to protecting Michigan businesses, and we need to make sure we are innovating quantum computing here in the U.S.” said Rep. Haley Stevens. “This bipartisan effort will help ensure we are developing the best research on quantum technologies, so our businesses and innovators here at home can apply this technology and help Michigan businesses continue to grow.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: UPDATE: Man remains in custody in connection with arson attacks

Source: United Kingdom London Metropolitan Police

A man arrested in connection with a series of arson attacks remains in police custody.

The 21-year-old was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 May on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

He was arrested at an address in Sydenham.

The man was taken to a London police station, where he currently remains in police custody.

The arrest relates to three incidents.

On Monday, 12 May at 01:35hrs, police were alerted by the London Fire Brigade to reports of a fire at a residential address in NW5.

Officers attended the scene. Damage was caused to the property’s entrance, nobody was hurt.

As a precaution and due to the property having previous connections with a high-profile public figure, officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command are leading the investigation into this fire. Enquiries are ongoing to establish what caused it.

The investigation team are also considering two other incidents – a vehicle fire in NW5 on Thursday, 8 May and a fire at the entrance of a property in N7 on Sunday, 11 May – and are investigating whether they may be linked to the fire in NW5 on 12 May.

All three fires are being treated as suspicious at this time, and enquiries remain ongoing.

Commander Dominic Murphy, Head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “We are working at pace and continue to explore various lines of enquiry to establish the cause of the fires, and any potential motivation for these. A key line of enquiry is whether the fires are linked due to the two premises and the vehicle all having previous links to the same high-profile public figure.

“We recognise that this investigation may cause concern to other public figures – particularly MPs. The protection of MPs is something we take extremely seriously across the whole of policing and I would encourage any MP who is concerned about their own safety to get in touch with their dedicated local Operation Bridger officer, who can provide further advice and support.

“In the meantime, our investigation remains ongoing and we will continue to work closely with local officers in the areas affected. Residents can expect to see an increased police presence in those areas over the coming days, but if anyone has concerns, then please speak with a local officer, or call us.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should call police on 101 quoting CAD 441/12 May.

We would ask the public to remain vigilant and if they see or hear anything that doesn’t look or feel right, then to report it to police – either by calling police, in confidence, on 0800 789 321 or via www.gov.uk/ACT

In an emergency, always dial 999.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Lansdowne Station — Update: Missing children investigation and search in Pictou County

    Source: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

The Pictou County District RCMP, with the assistance of the Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit, continue to investigate the disappearance of Lilly and Jack Sullivan.

“We’re exploring all avenues in this missing persons investigation,” says Staff Sergeant Curtis MacKinnon, Pictou County District RCMP. “We have officers from multiple disciplines dedicated to finding Lilly and Jack, including highly trained RCMP major crime and forensic investigators.”

To date, more than 180 tips have been received from the public, and are being followed up on. Officers have so far identified 35 people for formal interviews as part of the investigation, including community members and those closest to the children. And on May 8 and 9, the RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team (URT) scoured bodies of water around Lansdowne Station; URT’s two-day operation didn’t uncover any evidence.

“We continue to work day and night on this file,” says S/Sgt. MacKinnon. “Like all Nova Scotians, we want answers, and we want to know what happened to these children.”

On May 2, at approximately 10 a.m., Pictou County District RCMP received a report that Lilly and Jack were missing. They were believed to have wandered away from their home on Gairloch Rd. A multi-agency search and missing persons investigation began immediately.

The search, which was scaled back to specific areas on May 7, has covered 5.5 square kilometres of heavily wooded, rural terrain in the Gairloch Rd. area. It has involved up to 160 trained volunteer searchers and many others, and tens of thousands of search hours. Efforts to locate Lilly and Jack also included two vulnerable missing persons alerts.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Lilly and Jack is asked to contact Pictou County District RCMP at 902-485-4333. To remain anonymous, contact Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers, toll-free, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips app.

Our thoughts continue to be with the children’s loved ones and the community at this difficult time.

Note to media: As this is an active, ongoing investigation, information will be released as it becomes available.

  • MIL-OSI: Not so fast! Northwest drivers say they drive safely in neighborhoods – but point fingers at other speeders

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SEATTLE, May 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A new poll from PEMCO Mutual Insurance recently found that a majority of Pacific Northwest drivers say they abide by the appropriate speed limit on residential neighborhood streets – but they’re far less convinced that others share the same caution.

PEMCO’s poll of Washington and Oregon residents found that 87% of drivers believe the speed limit on residential streets should be 25 mph or lower, and most (80%) say they drive the appropriate speed often. Yet, only 30% believe other drivers often abide by the appropriate neighborhood speed limit.

“Most drivers genuinely believe they’re making safe choices, especially in neighborhoods. But we also see that people are quick to notice when others fall short,” said PEMCO spokesperson Jennifer Hawton. “That gap between what we think and what we see is a great reminder to stay alert and consistent behind the wheel to prevent accidents.”

While most poll respondents share concern for driving safely in neighborhoods, speeding in general remains a widespread behavior among Northwest drivers. In fact, 59% of respondents admit they speed at least occasionally, with 22% saying they do so often – suggesting that speeding is a habit most drivers can’t resist.

What’s more, nearly three out of four drivers (72%) believe in a so-called “buffer speed” – the belief that law enforcement won’t pull them over unless they’re significantly over the limit. Most assume that buffer is between five and nine miles per hour, but 12% believe they can go 10 mph or more over the limit without consequence.

So, why do people speed? The top reason, cited by 66% of drivers, is that “everyone else is doing it,” according to the PEMCO Poll.

“We’ve polled drivers on speeding in the past, and there appears to be a consistent disconnect between what drivers believe they can get away with and the actual risks they pose,” Hawton said. “Whether you’re on the freeway or driving through your neighborhood, speed matters, and slowing down can save lives.”

For a complete summary of PEMCO’s proprietary poll results visit www.pemco.com/blog/nw-polls.

About the PEMCO Insurance Northwest Poll

PEMCO Mutual Insurance commissioned this independent survey, conducted by Qualtrics, that asked Washington and Oregon residents questions about attitudes toward current Northwest issues. The sample size, 420 respondents in the Seattle Metro (King, Snohomish, Pierce Counties) region, 402 respondents in the Portland Metro (Multnomah, Marion, Clackamas, Washington Counties), and 383 respondents in the Spokane area (Spokane and Stevens Counties) yields an accuracy of +/- 5.0% respectively at the 95% confidence level. In other words, if this study were conducted 100 times, in 95 instances the data will not vary by more than the associated error range.

The official unemployment rate has crept up by 1% to reach 32.9% in the first quarter of 2025.

This according to Statistics South Africa’s (Stats SA) Quarterly Labour Force Survey released on Tuesday morning.

“There was a decrease of 291 000 in the number of employed persons to 16.8 million from 17.1 million in Q4: 2024, while there was an increase of 237 000 in the number of unemployed persons to 8.2 million. This resulted in a decrease of 54 000 [down by 0,2%] in the labour force during the same period.

“Discouraged work-seekers increased by 7000 [up by 0.2%], and the number of persons who were not economically active for reasons other than discouragement increased by 177 000 [up by 1.4%] between the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025. This led to an increase of 184 000 in the number of the not economically active population, to 16.7 million,” Stats SA said.

The expanded unemployment rate increased by 1.2 percentage points to 43.1%.

“The number of persons employed in the formal sector decreased by 245 000 in Q1: 2025, and the informal sector employment increased by 17 000 over the same period. The largest industry increases in employment were recorded in transport [67 000] finance [60 000] and utilities [35 000].

“Decreases in employment were recorded in trade [194 000], construction [119 000], private households [68 000], community and social services [45 000], and mining [35 000],” the institution said.

The provincial breakdown of increases and decreases in employment is as follows:

    • Western Cape: 49 000 increase
    • Gauteng: 9000 increase
    • Free State: 4000 increase
    • KwaZulu-Natal: 104 000 decrease
    • Eastern Cape: 83 000
    • North West: 57 000 decrease
    • Limpopo: 55 000 decrease
    • Mpumalanga: 43 000 decrease
    • Northern Cape: 12 000 decrease

The institution highlighted that South African youth remain “vulnerable in the labour market”.

“The results for the first quarter of 2025 show that the total number of unemployed youth increased by 151 000 to 4.8 million, while employed youth recorded a decrease of 153 000 to 5.7 million.

“As a result, the youth unemployment rate increased from 44.6% in the fourth quarter of 2024 to 46.1% in the first quarter of 2025,” Stats SA said. – SAnews.gov.za

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: CE leads delegation to begin visit to Kuwait (with photos/ videos)

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region

CE leads delegation to begin visit to Kuwait (with photos/ videos)
In the morning, Mr Lee met with the Amir of Kuwait, Mr Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who is the head of state of Kuwait; the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Mr Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah; and the Acting Prime Minister, Mr Fahad Yousuf Saud Al-Sabah, to exchange views on strengthening co-operation between Hong Kong and Kuwait. Mr Lee then attended a roundtable meeting chaired by the Acting Prime Minister, engaging in in-depth discussions with senior officials of the Kuwait Government on areas such as finance, trade, and innovation and technology (I&T). Mr Lee and the Acting Prime Minister witnessed the signing of Memoranda of Understanding by Invest Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council with the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority respectively. He and the delegation also participated in a luncheon hosted by the Acting Prime Minister.

Mr Lee noted that Kuwait is the first member of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) to sign both an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement and a Comprehensive Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement with Hong Kong, establishing a robust framework and foundation for economic and trade co-operation between the two places.

He said that Kuwait has been actively developing a diversified economy in recent years, proposing Kuwait Vision 2035 to promote digital transformation and develop the country into a regional and international financial and trade centre. Hong Kong, as an international financial, shipping and trade centre with world-class professional services, has vast opportunities for co-operation with Kuwait in areas such as finance, investment, digital economy, and I&T, and can assist Kuwait in advancing its Vision 2035. Noting that Kuwait is the rotating President of the GCC currently, Mr Lee expressed his anticipation to strengthen co-operation between Hong Kong and Kuwait, adding that he looks forward to establishing closer economic, trade and cultural exchanges with more GCC member states.

Mr Lee highlighted that Hong Kong enjoys the advantage of connecting the country with the world under the “one country, two systems” principle. Hong Kong will fully leverage its role as a bridge to serve enterprises in going global and attracting external investment, complementing the strengths of Mainland enterprises while deepening international exchanges and co-operation. He welcomed the Kuwaiti Government and enterprises to utilise Hong Kong’s role as a “super connector” and “super value-adder” to explore new opportunities under the Belt and Road Initiative for mutual benefit.

Later, Mr Lee and the delegation met with representatives of a local corporation, Bukhamseen Group Holding Company, to learn about the latest developments in the company’s businesses in construction, real estate, financial services, and culture and tourism. Mr Lee introduced Hong Kong’s development opportunities and its highly internationalised and market-oriented business environment with its pool of professional services talent. He welcomed the company to use Hong Kong as a springboard to develop diversified businesses and tap into the Mainland market, better grasping the immense opportunities brought by the Belt and Road Initiative and the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Mr Lee then visited the Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre to learn about Kuwait’s arts and culture projects and developments. The Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre, which opened in 2018, comprises eight buildings, six of which are museums with different themes, housing a total of 22 display halls.

Mr Lee said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government is committed to developing Hong Kong into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchanges, with the West Kowloon Cultural District as one of the world’s largest arts and culture projects. Both Hong Kong and Kuwait place importance on arts and culture development, and he said he looks forward to further deepening connections and co-operation in cultural exchanges between the two places.

The delegation led by Mr Lee attended a dinner hosted by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the State of Kuwait, Mr Zhang Jianwei. Mr Lee expressed gratitude to the Embassy for making meticulous arrangements for this visit and for its continued support to the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Dubai. The HKSAR Government will continue to promote economic, trade, and cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and Kuwait.

Mr Lee will lead the delegation to continue its visit to Kuwait tomorrow (May 14), meeting with local political and business leaders, and visiting enterprises.

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

PARK CITY, Utah and ST. LOUIS, May 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — U.S. Ski & Snowboard and Stifel Financial Corp. (NYSE: SF) are proud to announce a landmark renewal of their partnership from May 2026 through April 2034. This unprecedented 8-year agreement marks the most expansive partnership in U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s history and reflects a bold, shared vision through the next three Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Under the renewed agreement, Stifel will be the title partner of the Stifel U.S. Ski Team, supporting the alpine, cross country, freeski, moguls, aerials, ski jumping, nordic combined and Para alpine teams, as well as the exclusive financial services partner of U.S. Ski & Snowboard.

“As we look ahead to three Olympic and Paralympic Games, including a home Salt Lake City-Utah 2034 Games, this extended partnership with Stifel represents a generational investment in our teams and our athletes,” said Sophie Goldschmidt, President and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard. “Stifel’s support has also enabled us to implement innovative new initiatives that are having a direct impact on the organization. From World Cup podiums to grassroots development, Stifel’s belief in the power of sport and our athletes has been a game-changer.”

Organizationally, U.S. Ski & Snowboard has expanded its World Cup footprint in North America with the support of Stifel, bringing the total amount of World Cups from four to a record 11 in 2024-25. In the same season, the organization’s streaming and broadcast audience has doubled, earned media surpassed 30 billion impressions and social media impressions increased 70%.

2024 was also a record-breaking year for Stifel, highlighting the strength and balance of a diversified business model, achieving net revenues of $4.97 billion, the highest in the firm’s history, and delivering a 23% return on average tangible equity, with non-GAAP net earnings of $756 million, or $6.81 per share – a 46% increase from the prior year. And finally, over the year, Stifel’s share price increased 56.4%.

“The news of Stifel’s renewal as title sponsor of the Stifel U.S. Ski Team is so incredible,” said two-time Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin. “Ron (Kruszewski, Chairman and CEO of Stifel) and Stifel have shown amazing support for snow sports and are truly invested in the stories of our athletes and the growth of our sports, which has translated into more success on the mountain.”

“Stifel has opened up so many opportunities for us as athletes and humans looking to reach our full potential, and I am so grateful for their support and proud to be part of their team,” said Olympic champion cross country skier Jessie Diggins. “Their commitment to helping us reach the top level is incredible and makes all the difference!”

“The Stifel U.S. Ski Team partnership continuation is monumental for both parties,” said two-time Olympic medalist freeskier Alex Ferreira. “It is where success meets success. I am humbled and grateful to benefit from all sides.”

Stifel also launched innovative programs around the increased domestic World Cup events, including the Stifel HERoic Cup, designed around U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s HERoic initiative celebrating women’s sport. Stifel also invested in the Stifel Bibbo Award for the athlete who moves up the most in ranks in alpine World Cup races, and continues to support the Stifel Success Tour, development-level NorAm races in the U.S. that feed the Stifel U.S. Ski Team pipeline. Additionally, Stifel supported the Stifel Snow Show, a weekly series on CNBC, Peacock and YouTube that highlighted the achievements and stories of U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes each week throughout the season.

The Stifel brand will remain prominently displayed on team uniforms and event signage at US events, along with a continuation of the Stifel U.S. Ski Team branding across digital and broadcast platforms. Stifel will also support a new performance bonus program for athletes and coaches based on key results during the season.

“This partnership is about helping athletes reach their full potential,” said Ron Kruszewski, Chairman and CEO of Stifel. “As the firm Where Success Meets Success, we believe in backing those who strive for excellence—and that’s exactly what these athletes do, every day. We’re proud to support them not only as champions on the podium, but as role models, teammates and leaders who inspire us all.”

  • MIL-OSI Global: What will the Antichrist look like? According to Western thought, an authoritarian king – or the pope

Source: The Conversation – Global Perspectives – By Philip C. Almond, Emeritus Professor in the History of Religious Thought, The University of Queensland

Composite image by The Conversation. Images courtesy of TruthSocial/@realDonaldTrump and Wikimedia Commons

The US presidency and the papacy came together on May 3 when Donald Trump posted an AI-generated photograph of himself dressed as the pope to Truth Social. The image was then shared by the White House’s accounts.

Seated in an ornate (Mar-a-Lago-style) golden chair, he was wearing a white cassock and a bishop’s hat, with his right forefinger raised.

Trump has since told reporters he “had nothing to do with it […] somebody did it in fun”.

This image of “Pope Donald I” is of historical significance, for reasons of which, no doubt, the White House and Trump were blissfully unaware. It is the first ever image to combine the two most important understandings of the figure of the Antichrist in Western thought: on the one hand, that of the pope, and on the other, that of the authoritarian, despotic world emperor.

On April 22, the day after Pope Francis’ death, Trump declared “I’d like to be pope. That would be my number one choice”. On April 28, Trump told The Atlantic “I run the country and the world”.

So, both pope and world emperor.

    The Imperial Antichrist

In the New Testament, the First Letter of John says, before Christ came again, the Antichrist will appear: the most conspicuous sign the end of the world was near.

The Antichrist would be the archetypal evil human being who would persecute the Christian faithful. He would be finally defeated by the forces of good. As Sir Isaac Newton suggested, “searching the Prophecies which [God] hath given us to know Antichrist by” is a Christian obligation.

The first life of the Antichrist was written by a Benedictine monk, Adso of Montier-en-der, around 1,100 years ago. According to Adso, the Antichrist would be a tyrannical evil king who would corrupt all those around him with gold and silver. He would be brought up in all forms of wickedness. Evil spirits would be his instructors and his constant companions.

The Antichrist, left, is depicted as a king, in this image from a 12th century manuscript.
    Wikimedia Commons

Seeking his own glory, as Adso put it, this king “will call himself Almighty God”.

The Antichrist was opposite to everything Christ-like. According to the Christian tradition, Christ was fully human yet absolutely “sin free”. The Antichrist too was fully human, but completely “sin full”. The Antichrist was not so much a supernatural being who became flesh, as a human being who became fully demonised.

Influenced by Christian stories of the Antichrist, Islam and Judaism constructed their own Antichrists – al-Dajjal, the Antichrist of the Muslims, and Armilus, the Antichrist of the Jews. Both al-Dajjal and Armilus are king-like messiahs.

Over the centuries, many world leaders have been labelled “the Antichrist” – the Roman emperors Nero and Domitian were Antichrist figures, and the French emperor Napoleon was named the Antichrist in his own time.

There have been more recent leaders who have been likened to the Antichrist, among them former president of Iraq Saddam Hussein, King Charles III, former Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev, al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, and Trump.

    The Papal Antichrist

In the year 1190, King Richard I of England, on his way to the Holy Land, was informed by the Italian theologian Joachim of Fiore (c.1135–1202) the next pope would be the Antichrist.

In the history of the Antichrist, this was a momentous occasion. From this time on, the tyrannical Antichrist outside of the Church would be juxtaposed with the papal deceiver within it.

That the Catholic pope was the Antichrist was the common reading of the pope in the 16th-century Protestant Reformation.

Martin Luther (1483–1546), the founder of the Protestant revolution, declared the pope “is the true […] Antichrist who has raised himself over and set himself against Christ”.

Just as all Christians would not worship the Devil as God, he went on to say, “so we cannot allow his apostle the pope or Antichrist, to govern as our head or lord”.

This 1877 painting depicts Martin Luther summoned by the Catholic Church in 1521, to renounce or reaffirm his views criticising Pope Leo X.
    Wikimedia Commons

As he was about to be burned by the Catholic Queen Mary for his Protestant beliefs, the Anglican bishop Thomas Cranmer (1489–1556) declared, “as for the pope, I refuse him, as Christ’s enemy and antichrist with all his false doctrine”.

Even in 1988, as Pope John Paul II addressed the European Parliament, the Northern Ireland hardline Protestant leader Ian Paisley roared, “Antichrist! I renounce you and all your cults and creeds” – to which, we are told, the pope gave a slight bemused smile.

Except among the most extreme of Protestant conservatives, the idea of the papal Antichrist no longer has any purchase. The papal Antichrist has vacated the Western stage for the imperial Antichrist.

The Antichrist and the end of the world

In the history of Christianity, the idea of the Antichrist was a key part of Christian expectations about the return of Christ and the end of the world.

In the final battle between the forces of good and evil, the Antichrist would be defeated by the forces of Christ. In short, the rise of the world emperor who was the Antichrist was a sign that the end of the world was at hand.

In the light of the Western history of “the Antichrist”, the image of the imperial and papal US president is a powerful sign that the global order – at least as we have known it for the last 80 years – may be at an end.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Staying socially connected can help maintain healthy eating with age, especially for older women

Source: The Conversation – Canada – By Annalijn I. Conklin, Associate Professor, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British Columbia

Older people who are socially isolated have poor diet quality compared to those with frequent friend contact.
    (Shutterstock)

Healthy eating supports healthy aging: Canada’s Food Guide recommends daily intake of fruits and vegetables as a way to help prevent multiple chronic conditions that typically affect older adults.

We know that healthy eating is strongly influenced by our social connections and different settings. But aging often brings losses to different social connections that can put healthy eating at risk.

As researchers who study the interaction of nutrition, age and social issues, we were curious to know if adverse changes in an older person’s social connections matter for maintaining a good diet, and who is most affected?

Social isolation and social diversity change with age

There is broad health research focused on social isolation that measures this concept at one point in time using a combination of different types of social contexts such as living alone, infrequent social contact, no social participation and not married.

About one in five aging adults reduces the variety of their social engagement.
    (Shutterstock)

Social isolation, however, is not a static experience as aging adults frequently go through changes in different types of social relationships, often reducing their social contacts and activities over time.

Our recent research shows that the number of different social activities decreases over time for middle-age and older adults.

About one in five aging adults reduces the variety of their social engagement (for example, seeing friends and family, volunteering, sports, religious and educational activities, etc.), with greater declines seen among older women.

In addition, about 14 per cent of aging Canadians either became socially isolated or stayed socially isolated over time. Canadians in the oldest age group and in more socio-economically disadvantaged groups appear most vulnerable to staying or becoming either socially isolated or less socially diverse over time.

It is important, then, for research on nutrition and healthy aging to better capture distinct alterations in social engagement over time, not only in terms of a lack of regular social interaction but also in terms of a diversity of social interactions.

Dietary risks of changing social connections

Both the quantity and the quality of the foods we eat can be affected by our meal setting, and eating alone is correlated with poor diet quality.

Eating alone is correlated with poor diet quality.
    (Shutterstock)

Among older adults, being socially isolated is linked to inadequate intakes of fruits and vegetables — a marker of diet quality that is associated with chronic disease. More specifically, both older men and women with no or rare friend contact have poor diet quality compared to those with frequent friend contact.

It has been unclear whether staying or becoming socially isolated is a problem for maintaining healthy eating habits as people age. It is also unknown whether reducing the variety of social activities puts diet quality at risk of declining.

The handful of nutrition studies that do consider changes in social connections all focus on marital transitions, leaving a critical gap in knowledge for healthy aging policy and practice.

Our new study with collaborators is filling this knowledge gap by using multiple waves from a nationally representative cohort of middle-aged and older Canadians.

The first important finding is that older women who stayed socially isolated — meaning one or no monthly activity — reduced their diet quality over time compared to women who stayed engaged in two or more monthly social activities.

The second notable finding is the older women who reduced their diversity of social activities also had declines in diet quality over time. And finally, both older women and older men who had a small number of social activities that stayed the same over time were also at risk of declining diet quality.

These results were not explained by other social or behavioural factors that were included in the study’s analysis.

Social interventions to support healthy eating

Canada’s healthy aging strategy and Food Guide both emphasize the important role of social connections for maintaining health and healthy eating. There have long been programs, such as Meals on Wheels, that support health and well-being by providing hot, nutritious meals to individuals, especially older adults, who are home-bound.

Both older women and older men who had low social diversity over time were also at risk of declining diet quality.
    (Shutterstock)

Maintaining regular and diverse social activities is vital for promoting health and well-being as people transition from mid to later life. Everybody can benefit from not just being connected, but also from staying connected across a range of social settings.

We want to call attention to the significance of both persistent isolation and losses of social diversity for women’s nutrition and health in Canada. Different types of social connections may matter for women than for men, and their maintenance over time can show different effects on diet and health that need more research and policy action.

Understanding the social determinants of diet for women is key to addressing health inequities and to tailoring more effective social interventions for aging Canadians, such as social prescribing and other social relational models of care.

  • MIL-OSI USA News: FOUR-YEAR LOW: Prices for Essentials Fall as Workers See Relief in President Trump’s Economy

    Source: The White House

Inflation has fallen to the lowest level in more than four years as April’s Consumer Price Index smashes expectations for the third straight month in President Donald J. Trump’s Golden Age.

Here’s what you need to know:

    • Grocery prices saw their largest decline in nearly five years.
    • Gas prices fell for the third month in a row.
    • Egg prices saw the largest one-month decline in more than four decades.
    • Workers’ real wages are up 1.9%, increasing each of the last three months.
    • Prices for airfare, energy, hotels, and used vehicles are all down compared to last year.

    Here’s what they’re saying:

    • Bloomberg’s Augusta Saraiva: “US inflation rose by less than forecast in April amid tame prices for clothing and new cars, suggesting little urgency so far by companies to pass along the cost of higher tariffs to consumers.”
    • Investopedia Editor-in-Chief Caleb Silver: “The smoke was much worse than the fire … A big part of that was the drop in gasoline prices. This is very significant for households … That drop in gasoline and energy prices — a big deal.”
    • Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo: “Oil is down, eggs are down, food is down. We’re seeing that reflected, so all that hysteria over tariffs is not showing up in these numbers.”
    • USA TODAY: Inflation eased to 4-year low in April as Trump’s tariffs took effect, CPI report shows
      • “Prices for groceries, including eggs, used cars and airfares all fell sharply.”
    • Bloomberg: US Consumer Prices Rose Less Than Expected in April
      • “The pace is the slowest since the sprinsg of 2021 when inflation broke out in earnest.”
      • “Grocery prices were down 0.4% on the month, and eggs fell 12.7%, the most since 1984, validating some of President Donald Trump’s messaging.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Delivering on the Governor’s Affordability Committments

Source: US State of New York

overnor Kathy Hochul is celebrating a FY 2026 New York State Budget that delivers all of the Governor’s affordability commitments and will put thousands of dollars back in the pockets of millions of families on Long Island over the coming year and beyond. These huge wins include drastically expanding the size of New York’s Child Tax Credit, including tripling the credit for children four and under, cutting taxes for 1.2 million middle class Long Islanders, and sending inflation refund checks directly to 1.3 million households on Long Island.

“The cost of living is too damn high for Long Island families, so I promised to put more money in your pockets — and we got it done,” Governor Hochul said.“Putting thousands of dollars back in the pockets of families means helping Long Islanders afford the rising costs of groceries, raising kids, and just enjoying life. When I said your family is my fight, I meant it – and I’ll never stop fighting for you.”

The Governor’s FY 2026 Enacted Budget totals $254 billion and does not raise income taxes — all while delivering nearly $4 billion in affordability relief statewide. On Long Island, that means direct benefits for hundreds of thousands of families, workers, and students.

Expanding New York’s Child Tax Credit
The FY 2026 State Budget includes Governor Hochul’s plan to give 215,000 Long Island families an annual tax credit of up to $1,000 per child under age four and up to $500 per child from four through sixteen. This is the largest expansion of New York’s Child Tax Credit in its history — benefitting approximately 355,000 children on Long Island. Governor Hochul’s expansion of the credit will significantly increase the size of the average credit going out to families, helping cut child poverty statewide by upward of 8 percent.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Adding More Affordable Mixed-Use Housing in Brooklyn

Source: US State of New York

overnor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams today announced the completion of Logan Fountain, a new affordable housing development in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of Brooklyn. The $214 million project transformed a vacant parcel into affordable apartments, transitional housing for homeless families, and new retail space. With 343 total units, the new building includes 173 affordable apartments and 169 units of transitional housing, as well as one unit reserved for a superintendent. The development is a city-state project with investments from New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR), New York City Department of Social Services (DSS), and New York City Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). Since the Governor has taken office, HCR has financed over 7,600 affordable homes in Brooklyn. Logan Fountain continues this effort and complements Governor Hochul’s $25 billion five-year housing plan, which is on track to create or preserve 100,000 affordable homes statewide.

“It’s simple: the only way to address the housing crisis is to build more housing,” Governor Hochul said. “New Yorkers deserve a safe, stable and affordable home. By working together with Mayor Adams and our partners in New York City, we can address the needs of New Yorkers and create the types of modern and sustainable homes that uplift communities and allow families to grow.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said, “Every day, we are working to make New York City more affordable, and our whole-of-government approach is allowing us to partner with Governor Hochul and the state today to deliver over 340 units of affordable and transitional housing. This project will provide exactly the type of long-term stability our families need to help them thrive — providing them access to on-site services, resources, and housing. We are thrilled to open this world-class building with crucial supports and energy efficient designs that will make a lasting impact on hundreds of families, and which will serve as a model for how we can smartly address our decades-long housing crisis.”

Apartments are available to households earning up to 70 percent of the Area Median Income. Of the 173 affordable apartments, there are 105 supportive apartments with onsite social services including case management, career counseling, mental health support, and referrals to healthcare. Logan Fountain was designed to appeal to families of different sizes and has a mix of studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Additionally, the building includes ground-floor retail, play areas, fitness space, and a courtyard.

Logan Fountain will also host 169 units of transitional housing for families. Designed with trauma-informed principles, HELP New Leaf will offer critical support for families including clinical care, employment counseling, and housing placement support.

Logan Fountain’s sustainability measures include rooftop solar panels for on-site energy generation, a Variant Refrigerant Flow heating and cooling system that captures and repurposes heat already in the environment, as well as ENERGY STAR (r) appliances.

The project to redevelop the vacant site into a mixed-use hub for families was identified in the New York City Department of City Planning’s East New York Neighborhood Plan. The project’s developer is Hudson Companies, Jericho Project is providing the onsite support services, and HELP USA is operating the transitional housing within the building.

The 173 affordable and supportive apartments at Logan Fountain are supported by HCR’s Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program which generated nearly $50 million in equity and $18 million of long-term bond financing from its Housing Finance Agency.

The site is also participating in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s successful Brownfield Cleanup Program and will be eligible for approximately $9 million in tax credits to be issued by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Operational funding for the 105 supportive apartments is being provided by the New York City 15/15 Supportive Housing Program. DSS’s 30-year contract facilitates financing for the development and not-for-profit ownership of the 169 units of transitional housing.

Additional support included $24 million from HPD’s Supportive Housing Loan Program, $1 million in discretionary capital funding from the New York City Council, and over $150,000 in incentives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas said, “HCR’s investment in affordable housing will bring benefits to Brooklyn’s Cypress Hills community for generations to come. With affordable apartments, family-friendly amenities, and energy-efficient features, Logan Fountain demonstrates the potential housing can have on the lives of New Yorkers and the future of our neighborhoods. We thank Governor Hochul for her dedication to addressing the housing crisis in Brooklyn, and we appreciate the continued collaboration and support from City Hall and our partner agencies.”

NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen Harris said, “Reimagining vacant infrastructure by incorporating the latest sustainable building technologies moves New York State forward in its just and equitable transition to a clean energy economy. The transformation of Logan Fountain will help to meet the diverse, local needs of the Brooklyn community, while creating comfortable, and affordable spaces for future generations.”

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Acting Commissioner Amanda Lefton said, “Cleaning up environmental pollution in communities like Brooklyn unlocks investments in critical needs like affordable housing, transitional housing services, and commercial development. New York State’s Brownfield Cleanup Program is a vital tool that supports community revitalization across the state and the Logan Fountain project in Cypress Hills is a prime example of how this successful cleanup program is helping advance Governor Hochul’s continued efforts to increase affordable, sustainable housing statewide while also protecting public health and the environment.”

New York City Housing Preservation and Development Acting Commissioner Ahmed Tigani said, “Turning a former gas station into the largest project of its kind in New York City with affordable homes, supportive services, and transitional shelter all under one roof shows what real public-private partnership can deliver. Logan Fountain is a powerful example of what’s possible when we rethink how underused land can serve our communities. These 105 supportive homes, along with critical onsite care, reflect a new model for housing that prioritizes stability, dignity, and opportunity.”

New York City Department of Homeless Services Administrator Joslyn Carter said, “The Logan Fountain is an exemplary project that transforms underutilized city space into much-needed supportive and transitional housing for vulnerable families. At DHS, we are committed to reimagining the shelter system through innovative high-quality models and strong provider partnerships that enhance our delivery of services and strengthen pathways to long-term housing stability for New Yorkers experiencing homelessness. We are grateful to our partners at HELP USA, The Hudson Companies, and others as we continue to raise the bar on the physical infrastructure of our shelter system.”

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said, “I’m proud that the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit that I worked hard to protect and expand has generated $68 million to help build Logan Fountain in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn — a new development with 174 affordable apartments and a 169-unit family shelter with on-site support services. I applaud Governor Hochul’s efforts to create and preserve affordable homes across the state, especially for vulnerable New Yorkers, and I will continue working to deliver the federal resources needed for more affordable housing options.”

State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud said, “This is an incredible addition to the Cypress Hills neighborhood. By providing affordable housing alongside comprehensive wraparound services, Logan Fountain sets a standard for how we should address community needs — strengthening families, supporting vulnerable New Yorkers, and building more resilient neighborhoods.”

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso said, “I am thrilled to see what was once a vacant gas station transformed into a vibrant mixed-use facility with more than 300 units of housing, including transitional housing for our most vulnerable neighbors. Logan Fountain’s unique financing embodies the innovative thinking we need more of to make a dent in our housing crisis. I am so thankful to Governor Hochul and NYS Homes and Community Renewal for supporting Logan Fountain and their long-term commitment to building desperately needed housing in Brooklyn.”

New York City Council Member Sandy Nurse said, “Logan Fountain will bring hundreds of much-needed affordable, supportive, and transitional housing units to Brooklyn. I am particularly grateful that forty-one percent of the units will be family sized units, which will help stem the exodus of primarily Black families from the city. This project will help stabilize those most in need of permanent housing and allow families to put down roots in East New York.”

Hudson Companies President David Kramer said, “Logan Fountain stands as the largest project of its kind in New York City — a truly groundbreaking achievement that brings much-needed housing and social services to East New York. Today’s ribbon-cutting marks the transformation of a long-vacant site into a vibrant, mixed-use development designed to support and uplift our most vulnerable residents and tackle the city’s housing crisis. We’re deeply grateful to Governor Hochul for her support in bringing this development to life and to The Jericho Project and Help USA for their vital role in delivering these essential social services.

Jericho Project CEO Tori Lyon said, “Jericho Project is honored to provide support to the 105 families residing in Logan Fountain’s supportive housing complex — a critical initiative made possible through strong public and private partnership. Through our integrated service model – which includes mental health care, employment support, family counseling, and housing stabilization – our experienced staff will help ensure these families have the tools and support necessary to thrive.”

HELP USA President and CEO Dan Lehman said, “HELP New Leaf Family Shelter at Logan Fountain is a powerful example of what’s possible when the City and State work in true partnership with nonprofits and private developers. This shelter stands on the site of HELP 1 — our very first family shelter — which opened in the 1980s and set a national standard for transitional housing. As we celebrate HELP USA’s 40th anniversary and our work serving more than 30,000 people each year, New Leaf reflects all we’ve learned since then — a new model of care, services, and design built to meet the complex needs of today’s families. Logan Fountain is more than a building — it’s a commitment to dignity, stability, and opportunity for families rebuilding their lives.”

    Governor Hochul’s Housing Agenda
Governor Hochul is committed to addressing New York’s housing crisis and making the State more affordable and more livable for all New Yorkers. As part of the Fiscal Year FY25 Enacted Budget, the Governor secured a landmark agreement to increase New York’s housing supply through new tax incentives for Upstate communities, new incentives and relief from certain state-imposed restrictions to create more housing in New York City, a $500 million capital fund to build up to 15,000 new homes on state-owned property, an additional $600 million in funding to support a variety of housing developments statewide and new protections for renters and homeowners. In addition, as part of the FY23 Enacted Budget, the Governor announced a five-year, $25 billion Housing Plan to create or preserve 100,000 affordable homes statewide, including 10,000 with support services for vulnerable populations, plus the electrification of an additional 50,000 homes. Nearly 60,000 homes have been created or preserved to date.

The FY25 Enacted Budget also strengthened the Pro-Housing Community Program which the Governor launched in 2023. Pro-Housing certification is now a requirement for localities to access up to $650 million in discretionary funding. Over 300 communities have currently been certified, including the City of New York.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: New ‘engine for growth’ package announced as Defence Secretary closes London Stock Exchange

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    Press release

New ‘engine for growth’ package announced as Defence Secretary closes London Stock Exchange

Industry, innovators and investors will benefit from a new partnership with UK Defence, making it easier and more attractive to do business than ever before.

    • New partnership with business launched in the heart of City of London to unlock innovation, create skilled jobs and boost investment, as part of the Government’s Plan for Change.
    • John Healey MP becomes first Defence Secretary to close the day’s market at London Stock Exchange, announcing new Defence ‘Tech Scaler’ initiative to drive innovations from idea to frontline.
    • New report shows small and medium enterprises funded by the Ministry of Defence have attracted nearly £600 million private equity investment, supporting over 1,000 new jobs across the UK.

Launching this new partnership with a package of measures including a new ‘Tech Scaler’ pilot, John Healey MP will today become the first Defence Secretary to close the day’s market at the London Stock Exchange, underlining the government’s backing for the defence industry as an engine for national renewal and economic growth.

Speaking to business leaders, military personnel and private financiers, he called for an end to prejudice against defence investment and outlined how defence is driving economic growth, boosting British jobs and national security, underpinning the Government’s Plan for Change.

Defence Secretary John Healey MP said:

The war in Ukraine confronts us with the truth that a military is only as strong as the industry which stands behind it.

I’m here today – at this most crucial time – to help forge a new partnership between industry, innovators and investors.

UK Defence is open for business and together we can make Britain secure at home and strong abroad.

National security is at the heart of our Plan for Change, and is essential for economic security, investor confidence and social stability.

The Defence Secretary set out a package of measures to foster easier access to the defence market, including:

    • Defence Tech Scaler: A new Ministry of Defence Marketplace to drive innovations from idea to front line, with Enterprise Agreements for software, data and AI suppliers, to make it easier for innovative businesses, of all sizes, to do business with defence. As part of this, the Ministry of Defence has signed four Enterprise Agreements with firms including Adarga, Haedean, Oxford Dynamics and WhiteSpace – to a total value of up to £50 million.

    • Procurement Reform: A new segmented approach and radically faster targets for procurement in three areas: 1) major equipment – planes, tanks, ships – will go from an average of six to two years to get on contract; 2) upgrades to communications and weapons systems will go from an average of three to one year to get on contract, and 3) purchases of off-the-shelf kit – such as drones and software – will run in three-month cycles. For Armed Forces, this will mean they will get what they need when they need it, and for investors, it will mean a timelier return on investment.

    • Defence Innovation: A new innovation organisation, UK Defence Innovation, will help deliver cutting-edge technology to the Armed Forces and will be up and running by July this year, with a ring-fenced budget of £400 million this financial year.

    • Defence Industrial Joint Council, led by the Defence Secretary, will host its first meeting next month, and help co-ordinate public-private investment strategies – boosting investment into UK defence and delivering new jobs across Britain.

These measures come as a new report shows the value of the defence industry to the wider UK economy. The report, published today, found that funding from the MoD’s Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) to 461 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) resulted in nearly £600m in private investment and created 1,842 new jobs across the UK. £174 million was raised in 2024 alone, demonstrating defence as an engine for UK economic growth and delivering on the government’s Plan for Change. DASA continues to fund and support SMEs developing defence technology innovations, particularly dual-use technologies serving both civilian and military needs.

Daniel Maguire, Group Head, London Stock Exchange Group said:

The defence industry plays a vital role in the wider UK economy, supporting jobs and creating long-term value alongside ensuring our national security. We welcome the Government’s new measures and hope that LSEG can support in initiatives designed to help unlock capital for companies, boost growth, and promote innovation.

Last month, the Government welcomed the launch of a new UK Defence and Economic Growth Task Force – led by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) CEO and consulting firm Oliver Wyman, and jointly chaired by the Chancellor and Secretary of State for Defence. The Task Force will meet for the first time this month to unlock the potential of the UK’s defence sector to drive long-term national growth, innovation, and economic resilience.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Well-known voice backs Manchester homelessness fund’s work to give homelessness the elbow

    Source: City of Manchester

Guy Garvey has lent his distinctive voice to a short film promoting the work of a Manchester fund which helps people experiencing homelessness.

The Elbow singer has provided the voiceover for the clip which highlights the work of Real Change MCR, a fund which helps people build new lives away from the streets.

The Real Change MCR fund is accessed by more than 20 homelessness organisations and charities which provide support people who are, or have been, sleeping rough.

Grants are awarded to individuals to help them get off – and stay off – the streets. The money funds a wide range of practical support: From helping towards the deposit on a flat or the first month’s rent or buying furniture or essential household appliances to securing smart clothes or a training course to help get a job.

Since the Fund was launched it has raised almost £500,000 and helped more than 1750 people to move their lives forward.

James Charnock, The Chair of Real Change MCR said:
“The plight of people who find themselves sleeping on the streets is something which moves us all. 100% of donations to the Real Change MCR Fund are used to provide direct grants to people in Manchester who are experiencing homelessness to support them off the streets.

“We would never discourage people from donating to the many charities who are doing good work in Manchester tackling homelessness, not least because we work closely with them.

“But if you want to give differently, and to know that your donation will directly benefit someone in Manchester, please remember Real Change MCR. As this video illustrates, your small change can make a big difference.”

  • MIL-OSI: Guelph General Hospital receives $300,000 from Alectra to assist in establishing a new women’s health diagnostic imaging centre

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, May 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Alectra Inc. is proud to announce a $300,000 contribution over five years to help establish a new community-based medical centre including a diagnostic imaging centre at Guelph General Hospital (GGH). This initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing access to critical women’s health services for residents of Guelph and Wellington County.

This new centre, focused on preventative screening, diagnostics and intervention, will serve as a hub for women’s health imaging including breast and bone density imaging. The funding from Alectra will support the purchase of a second mammography machine, significantly expanding capacity for breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment support. By locating the facility in a community-based setting, with accessible parking and transit, the medical centre will help eliminate common barriers that prevent women from accessing life-saving screening services.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve, Alectra is proud to continue its support for Guelph General Hospital with this transformative project,” said Brian Bentz, President and Chief Executive Officer, Alectra Inc. “This new community-based diagnostic imaging centre will significantly enhance access to preventative care, ensuring more women in the region benefit from early detection services that are crucial for saving lives.”

As one of only three Breast Assessment Centres in the region, GGH’s new facility will help ease pressure on neighbouring hospitals and address the growing demand for services, especially now that Ontario has lowered the breast cancer screening age to 40. The innovative centre will provide a full continuum of care, guiding patients from screening to biopsy to surgery, and will serve individuals across Guelph and surrounding communities.

Julie Byczynski, Foundation CEO, spoke to the significance of this support. “This exciting new GGH medical centre is a huge leap forward for access to imaging services for our community, and requires significant start-up funding to support the purchase and installation of the new equipment. Therefore, having this generous commitment from Alectra underscores the vital role that corporate partners can play in helping build stronger, healthier communities.” Byczynski continued, “in this initial phase of the centre, the additional mammogram capacity of Guelph General is a huge win for women’s health locally. Increasing access and early screening will save lives.”

Through its AlectraCARES Community Support Program, Alectra has been supporting the GGH Foundation since 2021, including a previous contribution to the Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD). In 2022, Alectra furthered its commitment with a $180,000 donation to help reduce medical waste by funding the purchase of a new sterilization container system designed to minimize the waste generated from operating room surgeries.

Guelph General Hospital announced in December 2024 that the medical centre would be located at the Speedvale Campus of Conestoga College in Guelph. With a fundraising goal of approximately $10 million, bringing this transformative vision to life will rely on the generosity of donors and strong community partnerships.

  • MIL-OSI USA: ICYMI: Tuberville on Kudlow: “We’re so fortunate to have President Trump”

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Alabama Tommy Tuberville
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) joined Larry Kudlow on Fox Business to discuss how President Trump is delivering wins for the American people left and right.
Read excerpts from the interview below or watch on YouTube or Rumble.

KUDLOW: “The great Alabama Senator, Mr. Tommy Tuberville. Senator Tuberville, welcome, sir, as always. You know, Charles Payne was on in the first segment of the show, and he was talking about ‘Pax Americana’ and, you know, listing things that Mr. Trump is getting done. India, Pakistan, perhaps a ceasefire deal, the last American hostage being released by Hamas, the potential for, you know, Zelensky-Putin meeting, Trump himself might broker it. President Trump will be in the Middle East and maybe something is cooking with Iran. Is there a ‘Pax Americana’ back on? Is Mr. Trump reordering the chaos of the world under Biden into something resembling, you know, peace and prosperity and America first?”
TUBERVILLE: “Yeah, Larry. Don’t forget about the Abraham Accords. I think that might be one of the reasons he’s going to see the Saudis and bounce around the Middle East, but I don’t know how he keeps up with it. It’s hard for us here in the States to keep up with what’s going on. From the tariffs to the wars to the, you know, great big beautiful bill—it is mind boggling. But I’m enjoying every bit of bit of it. The Democrats are running for cover. We dealt for four years with somebody that had no negotiation skills. Now we got somebody that just loves to do it. He eats and breathes it, and we’re so fortunate to have President Trump as President.”
KUDLOW: “So, think about this, on the home front, I guess, but it’s also international affairs. Basically, in the same four- or five-day period, we got a very good trade deal with the United Kingdom, and we have a 90-day pause and a significant easing of tariffs with China and the US. What do you make of that?”
TUBERVILLE: “Well, and there’s about 30 to 35 [countries] Larry. I know for a fact they’re lined up ready to make deals with the United States. We’re controlling it, and we should, you know—[…] we’re the grocery store of the world. You know, we make everything in terms of being able to make it available to other people. Now, we’ve got to get in the manufacturing business again—that’s what President Trump’s doing all this for. But we’ve got to be choosy with it. But in my state of Alabama, I have people coming every day about new manufacturing ideas [saying] ‘We wanna move it here from either Ireland or Germany.’ It is amazing how much busier we are here in the Senate as Republicans [who are] wanting to bring [manufacturing] back and on the contrary of what the Democrats just tried to say, ‘No, we don’t want you here. We wanna raise all of our food out of the country, put our farmers out of business.’ It is totally different than what it was six months ago.”
KUDLOW: “So, nobody really talks much about it, but President Trump has raised $4 or $5 trillion dollars for American investment. He’s gone to the Middle East and so forth. He’ll probably raise, I don’t know, a couple trillion dollars more. I’m just guessing, but that’s part of the deal. The tax changes, the tax policy coming out of the Ways and Means Committee will provide incentives for those people who invest in the United States. So, there’s a tide of onshoring that seems to be coming not only from foreign relations and trade relations, but also just tax incentive relations. Where, you know, this is unheard of. This is unseen. It all goes hand in glove. Trump is taking advantage of this. What do you make of it? Can it all pass the Senate? I guess that’s my final thought. Is it gonna get through the Senate?”
TUBERVILLE: “Well, all the tax incentives normally come from the states, in which they still do. President Trump’s doing it on a national level. You know, the Opportunity Zones, all those things that he’s put into place. But right now, they’re negotiating [potential reforms to] Medicare, Medicaid, all the things that everybody are a little bit worried about. But always remember this—there’s really, as we’ve looked at all this, it’s all about reform. We have algorithms now that can go into the Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid that can be hooked up to these machines that can make sure that we can cut out all this fraud and all this nonsense with people getting on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, that shouldn’t be on it. We’re not in the 20th century. This is the 21st century, and all those things will kick in this year. You don’t hear much talk about AI in that area, but Larry, we will get it passed. It’s gonna be tough. We have to get cuts. We cannot pass a bill that does not have cuts in it. We’ve got to cut back somewhere close to the 2019 budget [spending levels]. And if we don’t do that, I don’t know how we can save the country, but President Trump is all for that, but he wants to do it in the right spot.”
KUDLOW: “But, Senator Tuberville, you know, able-bodied young men should not be on Medicaid. They should not be on Medicaid and the expansion of eligibility. So that’s not a cut really, sir. That’s enforcing the eligibility mandate, which Barack Obama tried to break. Now you all have a chance to put it back together again. And Medicaid is still gonna grow significantly. It’s just gonna grow by slightly less. It’s not really a cut. It’s just a slowdown in the phenomenal, bankrupting growth.”
TUBERVILLE: “Well, illegals are on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Everything that goes along with people that, as you said, are sitting around at home, watching The View on television, getting [EBT] cards, food stamps, and on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid—that’s got to be over with. Our country is not gonna make it. We cannot afford [for] that to happen, and President Trump is all about that. That’s what the House is pushing very hard. All the reforms that you just talked about have to be in there, but we cannot afford to take care of the world. Let’s take care of the people in this country first and then we might be able to help outside our borders.”
KUDLOW: “Actually, [if] we cut taxes and spending and have an investment-led boom and onshoring, the rest of the world might copy us. That’s what happened under Reagan. Anyway, Senator Tommy Tommy Tuberville. Thank you, sir, as always. We appreciate your wisdom.”
Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and is a member of the Senate Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, HELP and Aging Committees.

  • MIL-OSI USA: State Health and Environmental Officials Offer Spring Health Reminders

Source: US State of Rhode Island

With warmer weather now here, the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) are reminding people to take precautions to prevent tick bites, mosquito bites, and animal bites when outdoors.

“Enjoying nature and being physically active outside are some of the best things you can do for your health,” said Director of Health Jerry Larkin, MD. “While you are doing that, you can take some simple steps to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy and safe.”

“We all love spending time outdoors and making the most of everything Rhode Island has to offer during the summer,” said DEM Director Terry Gray. “Whether you’re hiking at Lincoln Woods or relaxing on one of our world-renowned beaches, it’s essential to follow our tick and mosquito prevention guidelines to stay safe and healthy.”

    Tick and mosquito bite prevention

    Repel Prevent tick bites by:

–Using repellents that contain 20 to 30% DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) on exposed skin and clothing for protection that lasts up to several hours. This will repel both ticks and mosquitoes. Always follow product instructions. Parents can apply this product to their children, avoiding hands, eyes, and mouth. DEET containing insect repellants are not recommended for use on infants under 2 months old. You can also find other EPA-approved insect repellents at https://www.epa.gov/insect-repellents/find-repellent-right-you. –Avoiding wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaves to avoid tick bites. If you are going to be in a wooded area, walk in the center of the trail to avoid contact with overgrown grass, brush, and leaves at the edges of the trail. You can also spray your clothes and shoes with permethrin to keep ticks away. Make sure to not spray this on your skin. –Wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outside. –Tucking your pants into your socks so ticks do not crawl under your clothes. –Wearing light-colored clothing so you can see ticks more easily.

Check Check yourself, your children, and pets, for ticks by:

–Taking a shower as soon as you come inside if you have been in grassy or wooded areas. –Doing a full-body tick check using a mirror; parents should check their kids for ticks and pay special attention to the area in and around the ears, in the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, around the waist, and in their hair. –Checking your pets for ticks as well because they can bring ticks into the home.

Remove Remove ticks from your body, as well as from children and pets, if you find them.

–Use a set of tweezers to remove the tick. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight up. –If you don’t have tweezers or a tick removal spoon, use your fingers with a tissue or rubber gloves.

Most people who get Lyme disease get a rash anywhere on their body, though it may not appear right away. At first, the rash looks like a red circle, but as the circle gets bigger, the middle changes color and seems to clear, so the rash looks like a target bull’s-eye.

Some people don’t get a rash but feel sick, with headaches, fever, body aches, and fatigue. Over time, they could have swelling and pain in their joints and a stiff, sore neck; or they could develop shooting pains, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet, or facial drooping from nerve palsy. Some people may experience heart problems. Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics.

    Animal bites and rabies prevention

Rabies is a serious, fatal disease that is most often transmitted to humans through a bite or scratch from an infected animal. People can be exposed to the rabies virus when the saliva or central nervous system tissue of an infected animal comes into contact with an open wound or a mucous membrane, such as the eyes, nose, or mouth. A less common way to be exposed to rabies is for a pet owner to touch saliva from a high-risk animal which has been deposited in a wound or the muzzle of the pet, resulting from an encounter between the pet and a wild animal.

    Prevention

–Make sure your dog or cat is vaccinated against rabies. –Avoid contact with wildlife and stray animals. –Wear gloves to tend to pets with wounds of unknown origin, or immediately after encounters have occurred between the pet and either stray animals or wildlife. –Make sure garbage is contained in a trash can with a secure lid to prevent attracting animals. –Take steps to keep bats out of your home (info here https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/prevention/bats.html)

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, or you wake up to a bat in your house:

–Wash all wounds and the area around the wound thoroughly with soap and water. (Washing for 5-10 minutes can destroy as much as 90% of the rabies virus.) –Contact your doctor or hospital emergency department. –Call RIDOH at 401-222-2577 and contact the animal control officer at your police department to report the incident. Provide the authorities with an accurate description of the animal (including distinctive markings, not just color and breed). –Capture and isolate the animal if possible, but do not risk further injury to yourself or a pet if the animal is dangerous. For a bat, do not touch the bat, but try to secure it in a clear container with a lid. Keep children away from all animals involved.

If your pet is bitten or scratched by another animal:

–Try to find out what type of animal bit or scratched your pet. Do not touch the attacking animal. –Wear rubber gloves and a hose to wash your pet’s wounds. Do not touch your pet with bare hands. There may be saliva from the rabid animal still on your pet. –Call your pet’s veterinarian immediately, even if the wound is superficial. –Call the animal control officer at your police department and RIDOH at 401-222-2577.

Learn more about rabies and animal bites at https://health.ri.gov/rabies.

Data This year, RIDOH has launched a new animal bites data dashboard. The dashboard includes information on reported animal bites in Rhode Island by year, counts for the administration of rabies vaccine by year, and the types of animals involved in biting incidents, among other data. The data can also be viewed by county, city, and town. Around 2,500 animal bites are reported in Rhode Island annually. The animals involved include dogs, cats, bats, rodents, and raccoons.

The launch of this animal bites dashboard comes a year after RIDOH developed an interactive dashboard with data on several tickborne diseases, including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and ehrlichiosis, broken down by demographics and geography. The dashboard makes data available by case counts and case rates by year, sex, county, city, and town.

In 2023, Rhode Island had 2,852 cases of Lyme disease, with Washington County continuing to have the highest rate of Lyme disease in the state. Anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis are among the other tickborne diseases found in Rhode Island.

  • MIL-OSI USA: GAO Recommendations Have Led to $725 Billion in Financial Benefits – New Duplication and Cost Savings Report Shows Potential for Another $100 Billion or More

    Source: US Government Accountability Office

WASHINGTON (May 13, 2025) – The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) today issued its 15th annual report identifying new opportunities to save taxpayers billions of dollars by reducing overlap, duplication, and fragmentation across the federal government. Since 2011, implementation of GAO’s work in this area has led to $725 billion in savings for the federal government. This year’s report adds 148 new measures in 43 topic areas that Congress and federal agencies could take to reduce costs, improve programs, and boost revenues. Implementing our newest measures, in conjunction with our existing recommendations, could save over $100 billion for the American people.

“Our updated report provides Congress and federal agencies with new and meaningful opportunities to save federal funds across a wide range of programs,” said Gene L. Dodaro, Comptroller General of the United States and head of the GAO. “By addressing this year’s updated list, as well as open recommendations to both agencies and Congress from GAO’s past work, the federal government could potentially save an additional one hundred billion dollars.”

Notable suggestions in our latest report include:

    • The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and 24 federal agencies should implement statutory requirements for annual IT portfolio reviews and high-risk IT investment reviews, which could result in one hundred million dollars or more in cost savings by reducing duplicative IT investments and halting or terminating investments, when appropriate.
    • The Space Development Agency should fully demonstrate its space-based laser communications technology in each iterative development phase before progressing, potentially saving hundreds of millions of dollars over 10 years.
    • The Department of Defense should take steps to incorporate data analytics into its fraud risk management strategy and improve the usability of fraud investigative information to support fraud risk management and potentially save one hundred million dollars or more.
    • OMB and General Services Administration should join Congress in taking steps to help ensure the Federal Audit Clearinghouse contains quality single audit information, which could reduce risk and resolve deficiencies in federal award spending by hundreds of millions of dollars per year.
    • The Department of Interior could prevent continued productivity losses and cost overruns from a failed data system development and improve its compliance activities to verify federal oil and gas royalties, potentially increasing collections by tens of millions of dollars per year.

While significant work remains, Congress and federal agencies have made strides on these issues. As of March, they had fully or partially addressed 1,590 (about 78 percent) of the 2,049 matters and recommendations that GAO identified from 2011 to 2025.  Since last year’s report, GAO identified about $57 billion more in savings from continuing work on these efforts, bringing the total level of government savings to $725 billion. Implementation of our recommendations has also achieved additional benefits, such as improved interagency coordination and reduced mismanagement, fraud, waste, and abuse. The status of GAO’s recommendations can be followed on its Duplication and Cost Savings page on the GAO website.

  • MIL-OSI: STMicroelectronics combines activity tracking and high-impact sensing in miniature AI-enabled sensor for personal electronics and IoT

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

STMicroelectronics combines activity tracking and high-impact sensing
in miniature AI-enabled sensor for personal electronics and IoT

Industry-first inertial measurement unit (IMU) with dual MEMS accelerometer
and embedded AI measures accurately up to 320g full-scale range

Geneva, Switzerland, May 13, 2025 — STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, has revealed an inertial measurement unit that combines sensors tuned for activity tracking and high-g impact measurement in a single, space-saving package. Devices equipped with this module can allow applications to fully reconstruct any event with high accuracy and so provide more features and superior user experiences. Now that it’s here, markets can expect powerful new capabilities to emerge in mobiles, wearables, and consumer medical products, as well as equipment for smart homes, smart industry, and smart driving.

The new LSM6DSV320X sensor is an industry first in a regular-sized module (3mm x 2.5mm) with embedded AI processing and continuous registration of movements and impacts. Leveraging ST’s sustained investment in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) design, the innovative dual-accelerometer device ensures high accuracy for activity tracking up to 16g and impact detection up to 320g.

“We continue to unleash more and more of the potential in our cutting-edge AI MEMS sensors to enhance the performance and energy efficiency of today’s leading smart applications,” said Simone Ferri, APMS Group VP, MEMS Sub-Group General Manager at STMicroelectronics. “Our new inertial module with unique dual-sensing capability enables smarter interactions and brings greater flexibility and precision to devices and applications such as smartphones, wearables, smart tags, asset monitors, event data recorders, and larger infrastructure.”

The LSM6DSV320X extends the family of sensors that contain ST’s machine-learning core (MLC), the embedded AI processor that handles inference directly in the sensor to lower system power consumption and enhance application performance. It features two accelerometers, designed for coexistence and optimal performance using advanced techniques unique to ST. One of these accelerometers is optimized for best resolution in activity tracking, with maximum range of ±16g, while the other can measure up to ±320g to quantify severe shocks such as collisions or high-impact events.

By covering an extremely wide sensing range with uncompromised accuracy throughout, all in one tiny device, ST’s new AI MEMS sensor will let consumer and IoT devices provide even more features while retaining a stylish or wearable form factor. An activity tracker can provide performance monitoring within normal ranges, as well as measuring high impacts for safety in contact sports, adding value for consumers and professional/semi-pro athletes. Other consumer-market opportunities include gaming controllers, enhancing the user’s experience by detecting rapid movements and impacts, as well as smart tags for attaching to items and recording movement, vibrations, and shocks to ensure their safety, security, and integrity.

With its wide acceleration measurement range, ST’s sensor will also enable new generations of smart devices for sectors such as consumer healthcare and industrial safety. Potential applications include personal protection devices for workers in hazardous environments, assessing the severity of falls or impacts. Other uses include equipment for accurately assessing the health of structures such as buildings and bridges.

The sensor’s high integration simplifies product design and manufacture, enabling advanced monitors to enter their target markets at competitive prices. Designers can create slim, lightweight form factors that are easy to wear or attach to equipment.

    Notes to editors
The 2.5mm x 3mm LSM6DSV320X integrates three micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors, comprising the ±16g and ±320g accelerometers and a MEMS gyroscope with ±4000dps range. The sensors are fully synchronized, making the modules easy to use and helping to simplify application development.

In addition to the MLC, which handles energy-efficient context awareness, the LSM6DSV320X integrates a finite state machine (FSM) that helps perform motion tracking in the module. The digital circuitry also includes ST’s Sensor Fusion Low-Power (SFLP) technology for spatial orientation.

Like other smart MEMS sensors in ST’s portfolio, the LSM6DSV320X features adaptive self-configuration (ASC) to optimize power consumption. Sensors with ASC can automatically adjust their settings in real-time upon detecting a specific motion pattern or signal from the MLC, without intervention from the host processor.

To facilitate tracking high-intensity impacts and at the same time maximize the accuracy on low-g events, ST has also created and patented the Motion XLF software library which fuses data from the low-g accelerometer and high-g accelerometer. Customers’ engineering teams can use the software freely in their designs using the X-CUBE-MEMS1 package. ST also provides, free of charge, graphical design tools that help evaluate, configure, and test the LSM6DSV320X sensor and embedded AI and connect the projects with STM32 applications. These include MEMS Studio, part of the ST Edge AI Suite, and ST AIoT Craft, the web-based environment with tools for developing and provisioning node-to-cloud AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) projects. The LSM6DSV320X is supported in ST Edge AI Suite now and will be added to ST AIoT Craft by the end of 2025.

  • MIL-OSI: Champion Safe’s 2025 Trophy Series Attracts Strong Dealer Interest with Key Upgrades

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

Provo, UT, May 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Since its 2025 launch, the newly enhanced Trophy Series from Champion Safe Company, a leading manufacturer of premium safes and wholly-owned subsidiary of American Rebel Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: AREB), America’s Patriotic Brand (americanrebel.com) has been generating significant interest among dealers looking for a high-security, high-value safe that outperforms comparable offerings. With key design and security upgrades for 2025, the Trophy Series is proving to be an even stronger competitor in the marketplace.

The Trophy Series has long been a trusted choice for customers who demand both strength and style, and the latest improvements further enhance its durability, usability, and visual appeal. This year’s updates include:

NEW Chrome-Plated Pull Handle – A modern design upgrade that enhances both appearance and user comfort.

NEW Radial Gear Drive Mechanism – Ensures smoother, more reliable operation.

NEW Black and Gray Plush Interior – Adds a refined touch while maintaining maximum storage capacity.

NEW ½” Radius Edges – A sleeker look that distinguishes Trophy from competing safes.

Beyond its design enhancements, the Trophy Series remains one of the most rugged safes in its class. With a 4½-inch-thick double-plate door, a 10-gauge steel outer shell, and Champion’s exclusive Diamond-Embedded Armor Plate™, it offers a level of security that many competitor models can’t match. The 1200°F fire rating for two hours ensures industry-leading fire protection for firearms, valuables, and important documents.

“We’re seeing strong interest from dealers who recognize that the Trophy Series offers a clear advantage over other safes in its class,” said Tom Mihalek, CEO of Champion Safe Company. “The combination of premium security features, improved usability, and a refined design makes it an even easier choice for both dealers and customers.”

Available in multiple sizes and finishes, including high-gloss Black, Ivory, and Platinum, the 2025 Trophy Series is positioned as a top-tier safe at a competitive price.
