  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Deal signed to deliver nearly 300 new affordable homes in Yardley

    Source: City of Birmingham

Dozens of families struggling to afford a safe and decent home are set to benefit from a new development agreement aimed at easing the region’s housing crisis.

Nearly 300 affordable homes, including 150 for social rent, are to be built on the site of the former Yardley Sewage Works in Stechford, Birmingham.

Birmingham City Council owns the land in Cole Hall Lane and has worked with housing developer Morro Partnerships, housing association Midland Heart, Homes England, the region’s elected Mayor and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to facilitate the deal.

On a visit to the site, Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, announced a £4.5m WMCA package for the scheme, the latest investment he has made as part of his mission to kickstart the biggest social housing programme the West Midlands has seen in decades.

Birmingham City Council has invested in the scheme, along with Homes England and the WMCA providing funding to clean up the brownfield site so it is suitable for house building. Morro and Midland Heart will begin construction of the homes before the end of the year.

The development deal comes as latest figures show that across the West Midlands there are 7,148 households, including 14,229 children, living in temporary accommodation and 65,335 households on the region’s social housing waiting lists.

Cllr Jayne Francis, Cabinet Member for Housing and Homeless, said:

“The national housing crisis means that we have several people on lists waiting for a home, the need for affordable homes has never been more urgent.

“Tackling this crisis is a key priority for this council, and this development demonstrates how we can do this by leading and working in partnership with others.

“We will continue discussions with developers and housing associations to facilitate deals that can provide our residents with warm, safe, and energy-efficient homes.”

Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said,

“In my first year in office, I’ve funded schemes that will provide more than 500 new social homes – that’s more than in all the schemes we have ever grant funded.

“Too many families in this region are living in cold, damp houses waiting too long for a home to call their own. This cannot be allowed to continue which is why I am helping to build more warm and safe homes for everyone.

“My target is clear: 2,000 new social homes a year by 2028 to tackle our housing crisis. We cannot do this alone – I am calling on housing associations and private sector developers to come together, just as we have at Yardley Brook, to build these homes and change the lives of thousands of families here in the West Midlands.”

Joe Reeves, Deputy Chief Executive at Midland Heart, said:

“As one of the largest housing providers in the Midlands, we have a key role to play in addressing the shortage of homes and providing decent, affordable housing for local people across the region.

“We are aiming to deliver 2,250 new homes by 2030, which, combined with the 4,000 we have already delivered during our last corporate plan period to 2025, will mean we will have delivered well over 6,000 new homes in a decade. Yardley Brook will be a huge part of this, and we look forward to working with our partner Morro, to transform this site, and develop and deliver almost 300 new homes.”

Tom Broadway, Managing Director for the West Midlands at Morro Partnerships, said:

“We are all aware of the shortage of affordable housing across the country, and Birmingham is no different. This deal will go some way to increasing and improving the housing stock in an underserved region.

“Sustainability is a fundamental aspect of our work and is an inherent part of each development we build. Helping to make housing more affordable, accessible, and ready for the future forms part of our commitment to building responsibly and is an immensely rewarding undertaking in its own right.

“We look forward to completing construction on this development and seeing it evolve into a thriving community over the coming years.”

The Yardley Brook announcement comes as the Mayor, WMCA and City Council, alongside other West Midlands local authorities, prepare to showcase more than £18 billion worth of investment opportunities at the UKREiiF property show in Leeds later this month.

Key projects to be presented to investors and developers in Birmingham include:

    • The Sports Quarter regeneration scheme in East Birmingham
    • Smithfield Birmingham – a £1.9bn regeneration of 17 hectares in the heart of the city
    • The Birmingham Knowledge Quarter innovation cluster.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Foster Care Fortnight 2025

Source: Scotland – City of Perth

The focus for this year’s campaign is the power of relationships and the extraordinary impact that foster parents can have on children and young people who, for a wide range of reasons, are unable to remain with their birth families.

Carers can offer a home to a child or young person, for as long as is required – from just a few days or weeks to months or years.   Personal qualities, and experience with children and/or young people, are more important than age or qualifications. Carers need to have experience of and enjoy spending time with children and young people and have a good sense of humour, lots of compassion, tolerance and bags of energy.

Councillor John Rebbeck, Convener of Learning and Families said: “All kinds of people can become foster carers – it is an extremely rewarding role to take on, not without its challenges, but the impact that carers have for children and young people can make a real, powerful difference to their lives.

“We have fantastic foster carers working with us here in Perth and Kinross and we are always keen to welcome more prospective carers to join them. In Foster Care Fortnight, I would urge anyone interested in making positive changes in a child’s life to get in touch with our Family Based Care Team.”

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Poll shows huge majority of Scots back rent controls and housing protections

    Source: Scottish Greens

Homes are for living in, not for profiteering.

The overwhelming majority of people in Scotland want rent controls to ensure rogue landlords cannot keep hiking rents, according to polling commissioned by the Scottish Greens.

The polling, carried out by Diffley, shows that 74% of people support rent controls and 83% believe that rents are too high compared to income levels in Scotland.

It also shows- that over two thirds (69%) support Green plans to force landlords to sell long-term derelict land and housing that they are sitting on.

Amendments proposed by Maggie Chapman MSP to the Housing (Scotland) Bill would create robust rent controls across Scotland, ensuring that rents can’t rise faster than incomes, if MSPs back them.

These protections put people over landlord profits, putting money back into people’s pockets and supporting renters through the ongoing cost of living crisis when bills and other costs are soaring.

Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman said:

“It is no wonder that there is such strong support for rent controls. The housing market is completely broken and it is renters who are paying the price. It underlines just how crucial it is that we take action.

“We’ve all seen how much damage is being done by rogue landlords who have been given carte blanche to line their pockets through massive rent increases.

“Not only does this hurt renters, often pushing them into poverty or even homelessness, but it hurts our economy as people have less money to spend.

“This is why the Scottish Greens implemented a rent freeze and eviction ban during Covid, saving people thousands of pounds, and it’s why we so strongly opposed the SNP ending the protections that we put in place afterwards.

“With the Housing Bill going through parliament we have the opportunity to stop the exploitation of renters and end rip-off rents. We must seize it.

“We must offer people and their families some financial stability, and less worry about losing the roof over their heads. Homes are for living in and not for profiteering. We need to make unaffordable rent hikes become a thing of the past.”

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: High Court agrees Council application to quash Wilmot Gardens planning decision

    Source: City of Plymouth

Last year, Councillor Mark Coker (the Claimant) applied for the planning decision in relation to Wilmot Gardens to be quashed, as the Council accepted one of the grounds in a legal challenge.

Following the Planning Committee granting permission for the application, the Council accepted the contention that it was necessary to include an appropriate condition to ensure the provision of affordable housing in perpetuity.

At the time of the application, planning officers did not consider it was necessary to include the condition because the number of units proposed fell below the policy threshold for affordable housing and was secured by a land transfer agreement. However, after further detailed consideration of the planning and legal issues raised, an application was made to the courts for permission to quash the decision and to bring the planning application back before Planning Committee, with the appropriate condition to secure the affordable housing in planning terms.

The Council as the Defendant received the sealed court order on Thursday 8 May which set out that a judge had given permission for the judicial review to be granted and had further consented to the quashing of the planning decision as requested in the Claimant’s application.

The planning department determines over 1,400 planning applications every year and while the department makes every effort to deal with every application efficiently, proportionately and in accordance with all relevant legislation, policy and guidance, the planning system is increasingly complex.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: City’s tiny Saxon treasure has a big story to tell

    Source: City of Leeds

A beautiful ancient Saxon pendant buried for more than 1,200 years in a Leeds field is giving experts a fascinating glimpse into life in early medieval Yorkshire.

Believed to date from the eighth century, the gilded pectoral cross may have once been a badge of office for an important church leader or official and was unearthed last year by a metal detectorist.

With one arm broken, and the central stone now missing, the cross is nevertheless a stunning example of metalwork, made from solid silver covered with a thin layer of gold leaf.

Decorated with an intricate interlacing Saxon pattern, the remarkable find would have probably been worn around the neck of someone of high status and is the latest in a number of discoveries indicating Leeds and its surrounding area may once have been home to some important and influential figures in the early medieval period.

The small artefact went through the Portable Antiquities Scheme Treasure process, and was secured by Leeds Museums and Galleries thanks to the generous contributions of funders. The cross is now set to go on display at Leeds City Museum later this year.

Kat Baxter, Leeds Museums and Galleries’ curator of archaeology, said: “The cross is beautifully decorated on both sides, which suggests it was designed to hang around the neck with the suspension loop on the missing arm. It would certainly have been worn by someone of high status and is an outward display of religious identity.

“It was made at a time when Leeds was part of the Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria and, along with a number of other discoveries in the area, really helps us build a picture of the types of people who would have lived here during this time”.

The 8th Century saw the earliest known written reference to Leeds, or Loidis, by the historian and monk The Venerable Bede. As well as Northumbia, England’s kingdoms included Mercia, Wessex, and East Anglia.

The cross’s discovery is the latest in a string of significant Saxon and Roman finds made in the Leeds area in recent years.

Just two years ago, a lead coffin buried for more than 1,600 years was discovered in a previously unknown cemetery site near Garforth alongside the remains of more than 60 individuals from late Roman to early Saxon periods.

The coffin contained the remains of a woman aged 25-35, who was buried wearing a bracelet, glass bead necklace and a finger ring or earring.

And in 2012 Leeds Museums and Galleries acquired The West Yorkshire Hoard, a group of seven objects found in the Leeds area by a metal detectorist dating from the seventh to 11th centuries. Five of the objects in the hoard are high quality gold jewellery, which would only have been worn by people of exceptional wealth in Saxon society.

Kat added: “All of these finds are part of a puzzle which together show that Leeds was home to high status, important individuals during the Saxon period, and this beautiful cross is the latest glimpse into the past. Unfortunately, objects representing less wealthy people are less likely to survive.

“There are certainly more objects out there waiting to be discovered, and responsible metal detectorists and The Portable Antiquities Scheme are playing a really important role in increasing our understanding of local history. Without them, this beautiful piece of Saxon metalwork, and many others like it, would never have been found and made available for future generations.”

Funding for the cross came through generous support from the Arts Council England /V&A Purchase Grant Fund, the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society, and the Friends of Leeds City Museums. It was acquired under The Treasure Act 1996.

Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, said: “This find is a beautiful example of the history all around us and gives a fascinating insight into the story of Leeds.

“It’s always wonderful when we are able to add important objects like this to our collections and we’re very grateful for the continued support of funders and visitors in helping us to preserve our local heritage.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: Genes, environment or a special bond? Why some twins talk and think in unison

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Jeffrey Craig, Professor in Medical Sciences, Deakin University

An interview with Paula and Bridgette Powers – identical twins who witnessed their mother’s carjacking – recently went viral. The way they spoke and gestured in unison has captivated global audiences.

Bridgette and Paula Powers have gained global attention for the way they speak.

Genetically, identical twins are clones. They result from the splitting of an early embryo, meaning they share the same genes.

In contrast, fraternal twins are the result of two eggs being fertilised by two different sperm. On average they share 50% of their genes – the same as any siblings who share both their biological mother and father.

So, when identical twins talk and gesture in unison (known as synchrony), is it down to genes? The answer can be complicated.

Genes aren’t the only influence on looks, language and like-minded thinking. Let’s break down the factors that might lead some twins to speak – and apparently think – in unison.

A close bond in a shared environment

Almost all twins, even “identical” ones, show some differences in physical, mental and emotional traits. They also regard themselves as distinct individuals and typically don’t like being referred to as “the twins”.

Yet we know most people naturally mimic the way those close to them speak and move, even without realising it. This phenomenon is called automatic mimicry and may be part of healthy social development, helping people synchronise behaviours and share emotions.

For identical twins who grow up in the same home, school and community, the effect of a shared environment and close bond may be particularly intense.

Twins may become each other’s main social companion.
    Lana G/Shutterstock

Paula and Bridgette Powers, for example, have shared an environment: not only the same parents, home and upbringing, but also the same job, running a bird rescue charity.

Twins may know each other so well they can intuitively sense what the other twin is about to say — and may feel like their brains are in sync. The Powers sisters have explained:

our brains must think alike at the same time.

In contrast, twins who grow up apart share many personality traits, but without years of shared interaction they are less likely to develop synchronised speech or mirrored behaviours. However, they do display many of the same unusual habits and idiosyncrasies.

    What about genetics?

Studying identical and fraternal twins separated at birth can help us unravel how much of our behaviours – intelligence, personality and temperament – are influenced by genes and environment.

Even when identical twins grow up apart, they tend to closely resemble one another – not only physically, but in their personality, interests and behaviours. Fraternal twins, in general, are much less alike. This tells us genes matter.

One of us (Nancy) was a researcher with the Minnesota Study of Twins Raised Apart, which lasted from 1979 to 1999 and looked at more than 100 sets of twins (and triplets) separated at birth and raised apart. Twins were separated for various reasons, such as the stigma of single motherhood, inadequate family resources and maternal death.

The study comprehensively examined factors affecting a wide range of psychological, physical and medical traits. Researchers wanted to understand the impact of differences in their life histories on both identical and fraternal twins, reared apart and how they affected the current similarities and differences between them.

A striking finding was identical twins raised apart are as similar in personality as identical twins raised together. For example, the Minnesota researchers found little difference in traits such as wellbeing and aggression, whether identical twins were raised together or apart.

This shows genes play an important role in shaping our personality. Genes also affect the way we process speech and language.

Sharing identical genes may mean identical twins also respond to situations in similar ways. This is because their brains lead them to behave in comparable ways. This genetic closeness, which underlies their behavioural resemblance, explains why they may independently say or do the same thing, without any need for a mystical explanation.

The Minnesota study also found when identical twins were reunited they formed closer relationships with each other than reunited fraternal twins did. This suggests perceptions of similarity in behaviour might draw people together and help keep them connected.

We now know genes and environment each account for half the person-to-person differences in personality. However, the life events we individually experience remain the most important factor shaping how our unique traits are expressed and who we ultimately become.

What about a secret ‘twin language’?

Parents of identical twins may be left baffled as their children, even as toddlers, seem to communicate through babbles and gestures that no one else can understand.

Parents may observe young twins communicating without words.

Each twin pair has their own way of communicating. Twins’ private speech, also called idioglossia, cryptophasia or a “secret language”, refers to verbal and nonverbal exchanges most other people don’t understand. This is different to synchronised speech.

Private speech is displayed by about 40% of twins. However, estimates vary wildly – ranging from as low as 2% to as high as 47%. That’s mainly because researchers define and measure it differently.

Private speech usually fades as children age, at about three years of age. But some twins continue to use it into early childhood.

Why are we so fascinated by twins?

Twins continue to fascinate us. That is clear in the wealth of media attention they receive, their popularity in scientific studies, and their presence in myths and legends across all continents.

Perhaps it is because when we see identical twins who look and act so much alike, it challenges our belief that we are all unique.

But even identical twins are not exact replicas of one another. Genetic changes, events in the womb, and/or life experiences can conspire to create differences between them.

Nevertheless, most identical twins are more alike and socially closer than any other pair of people on the planet.

Bridgette and Paula Powers appear in an episode of Australian Story airing on Monday on ABCTV and ABC iview.

Jeffrey Craig has received funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council. He is the Patron of the Australian Multiple Birth Organisation, and a Member of the International Society of Twin Studies.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. LaMalfa Introduces Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Doug LaMalfa 1st District of California

Washington, D.C.—Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale), along with Reps. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) and Jeff Hurd (R-CO), introduced H.R. 3300, the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act of 2025, to ensure aerial fire retardant remains available for wildfire suppression efforts without being tied up in Clean Water Act permitting delays. The bill clarifies that federal, state, local, and tribal firefighting agencies do not need a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit to use fire retardant from aircraft when responding to wildfires.

Congressman LaMalfa was joined by eight bipartisan members of Congress in co-sponsoring this legislation: Reps. David Valadao (R-CA), Young Kim (R-CA), Ken Calvert (R-CA), Darrell Issa (R-CA), Tom McClintock (R-CA), Vince Fong (R-CA), Adam Gray (D-CA), and Jim Costa (D-CA). Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) also introduced a companion bill in the Senate.

“Fire retardant is one of the most effective tools we have to stop wildfires from turning into disasters—especially in the West,” said Rep. LaMalfa. “Trying to ban its use during fire season isn’t just ridiculous, it’s dangerous. These extremist environmental groups are more worried about trace amounts of retardant than the real damage caused by out-of-control fires. Entire forests, homes, wildlife, and human lives are at stake. The smoke alone from one major wildfire can choke the air for hundreds of miles. We should be focused on stopping fires early, not tying firefighters’ hands with red tape.”

“In Wyoming and across the west, we understand all too well the devastating toll wildfires take on our communities,” said Senator Lummis (R-WY). “Without timely access to fire retardant, lives and homes are at risk. In an emergency, we cannot afford to let bureaucracy slow down our response, and this legislation ensures firefighters have the tools they need to protect lives, property, and public lands.”

“With nearly 9 million acres burned nationwide in 2024, the threat of wildfire is only growing,” said Rep. Panetta (CA-19).  “This bipartisan legislation would make clear that fire retardant must remain a critical part of our wildfire response strategy.  Protecting our homes, our forests, and those on the front lines keeping us safe remains our top priority.”

“Catastrophic wildfires have swept across the West over the past decade, devastating communities, public lands, and wildlife habitats,” said Rep. Hurd (CO-03). “This bipartisan legislation ensures the Forest Service has the critical tools and resources it needs, free from bureaucratic red tape, to protect lives, and I’m proud to stand with my Western colleagues to deliver real support to those on the front lines.”

“We know that regulatory ‘green tape’ blocks our firefighters from battling deadly blazes once they start, as well as preventing the wildfires we know will occur. Even though my home state of California faces the devastating threat of wildfires every year, bureaucrats in Washington and Sacramento continue to handcuff our heroes. That’s why I’m proud to sponsor the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act, which will streamline the essential aerial suppression efforts of our wildland firefighters as they take on and take down our nation’s wildfires,” said Rep. Issa (CA-48).

“California suffers from thousands of wildfires each year, and taking fire retardant away from the U.S. Forest Service is reckless,” said Rep. Valadao (CA-22). “This bipartisan bill ensures the heroes fighting wildfires have every tool at their disposal to minimize damage to our forests, homes, and businesses. I’m proud to join my Western colleagues to prioritize safety and common sense over extreme environmental policies.”

“We need all hands on deck and all the tools in our arsenal during a wildfire,” said Rep. Kim (CA-40). “Fire retardant has proven to be safe and effective for containing and mitigating wildfires, and I’m proud to join Reps. LaMalfa and Panetta to ensure its continued use. As the representative of many wildfire-prone areas, including in the canyon communities of Orange County, I will keep fighting to support commonsense policies to protect our communities.”

“The bipartisan Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act will ensure our most critical wildfire suppression tool, fire retardant, is available to protect our communities when we need it most,” said Rep. Calvert (CA-41). “I thank Rep. LaMalfa for introducing this important bill.”

“Communities across California have been devastated by increasingly destructive wildfires,” said Rep. Gray (CA-13). “In order to protect Californians, firefighters must be able to use every tool available to them. This bipartisan, commonsense bill that will empower them to do just that.”

“As climate change fuels more intense and frequent wildfires across California, we must act to protect our communities and those who risk their lives on the frontlines. This legislation strengthens our wildfire response, invests in prevention, and gives firefighters the support they need to do their jobs safely. This is about protecting lives, livelihoods, and the land we all depend on,” said Rep. Costa (CA-21).

“This bill will improve wildfire response by streamlining fire suppression efforts and will eliminate the bureaucratic red tape that hinders firefighters on the front lines,” said Rep. Vince Fong (CA-20). “As catastrophic megafires become increasingly common in California, firefighters must have timely access to every available tool without being delayed by cumbersome environmental waiver processes.”

“With California wildfires on the rise, it’s commonsense to allow firefighters expedient access to critical resources” said Rep. McClintock (CA-05). “I’m proud to join my colleagues in co-sponsoring the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act to cut bureaucratic red tape and fight fires more efficiently.”

    Background

In 2022, an environmental group sued the Forest Service over its use of aerial fire retardant, arguing it should be regulated under the Clean Water Act. A federal court ruled in 2023 that the Forest Service must obtain a NPDES permit from the EPA, but declined to issue an injunction that would have halted the use of retardant during fire season. The permitting process is expected to take years, and if future litigation results in a successful injunction, firefighters could be forced to ground aircraft or fly them with only water—putting lives, forests, and property at serious risk.

The Forest Service has made clear in testimony that aerial retardant is a critical part of its integrated wildfire strategy and that current operations already prohibit discharge into waterways or buffer zones. Over the past decade, less than 1% of fire retardant drops have affected waterways.

The bill builds on existing exemptions in the Clean Water Act for fire control activities and ensures continued use of fire retardants that are approved and listed on the Forest Service’s Qualified Products List.

Congressman Doug LaMalfa is Chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus and a lifelong farmer representing California’s First Congressional District, including Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama and Yuba Counties.

  • MIL-OSI USA: What They’re Saying: LaMalfa Introduces Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Doug LaMalfa 1st District of California

Washington, D.C.—Yesterday, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) introduced H.R. 3300, the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act of 2025, to ensure aerial fire retardant remains available for wildfire suppression efforts without being tied up in Clean Water Act permitting delays. The bipartisan bill clarifies that federal, state, local, and tribal firefighting agencies do not need a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit to use fire retardant from aircraft when responding to wildfires. The bill, introduced alongside Reps. Panetta (D-CA) and Hurd (R-CO), has already earned strong support from local leaders, here’s what they’re saying:

Travis Joseph, President/CEO, American Forest Resource Council: “The Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act gives wildland firefighters the tools they need to protect lives, communities, and forests from catastrophic wildfire. It will prevent unnecessary litigation that could block the aerial use of fire retardants—one of the most effective tools we have to slow the spread of fast-moving fires. This commonsense bill, paired with proactive, science-based forest management, is essential to confronting our nation’s growing wildfire and smoke crisis. With another dangerous fire season approaching, Congress must act swiftly to pass the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act. We cannot afford to let our forests burn while proven suppression and management tools are tied up in red tape.”

Matt Dias, President and CEO, Calforests: “Maintaining healthy forests supports the economy in Northern California and beyond and safeguards communities at risk from catastrophic wildfire, but prevention is not enough. Fire retardants have played an integral role in stopping some of the most devastating wildfires in recent history, and the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act will ensure our wildland firefighters continue to have access to this critical firefighting tool. I urge Congress to pass the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act to safeguard aerial fire retardants, which is ultimately a decision to prioritize lives, land, businesses, and forested environments.”

Tod Kimmelshue, Chair Butte County Board of Supervisors: “Butte County knows first-hand the destruction that wildfire can bring to our communities. It’s essential that fire fighters have the ability to use fire retardant to protect lives and communities.”

Chris Edwards, President, Oregon Forest Industries Council: “Oregon is home to some of the most productive forests in the world, but the severe wildfire seasons in recent years have made it clear that many of these landscapes are increasingly vulnerable and at risk. In order to maintain this treasured resource for recreation, for key species habitat, and for the production of renewable building materials, the agencies that are responsible for keeping our communities and forests safe during wildfire season must have every tool in the toolbelt available for use. The Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act is a perfect example of commonsense legislation that will facilitate the timely and effective use of one of the most essential suppression tools available to us. We urge Congress to take quick and decisive action in passing this Act.”

Doug Teeter, Butte County Supervisor: “The health, welfare, and economic prosperity of the residents of Butte County, along with many other rural communities, are uniquely reliant on—and impacted by—the Forest Service’s wildfire suppression efforts, which is why I am urging Congress to pass the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act to allow the Forest Service to continue deploying aerial fire retardants.”

Paul Petersen, Executive Director of the United Aerial Firefighters Association (UAFA): “UAFA is deeply troubled by efforts to restrict the use of aerially applied fire retardant through legal challenges. At a time when wildfires are expanding rapidly into the Wildland-Urban Interface where communities are at greater risk, fire retardant is a proven, essential tool in assisting wildland firefighters in their fight to contain, control and defeat wildfire. The tools that slow or stop the spread of wildfire are critical to protecting lives and property. As this lawsuit threatens to continue into its third year, UAFA strongly supports Congressman LaMalfa and Senator Lummis’ legislation, the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act of 2025, which allows the federal, states, and tribal governments to continue the use of aerially applied fire retardants.”

Bill Connelly, Rural County Representatives of California, Butte County Representative: “Aerial fire retardant is one of the most effective wildfire suppression tools in our firefighting arsenal. Its swift application can stop a wildfire from becoming catastrophic — saving lives, property, and landscapes. The Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act will safeguard this critical tool for firefighting agencies, ultimately protecting our families, businesses, and communities.”

Greg Bolin, Town of Paradise, California: “No one knows the damage that wildfires can cause more so than communities like mine. We lost our town to one of the biggest fires in California history, so securing access to aerial fire retardants for wildfire suppression is a very personal issue for us. Our brave firefighters need every tool in the toolbox to protect human lives and property against wildfires, and the Forest Protection and Wildland Firefighter Safety Act would significantly move the needle in that effort.”

“Nurses now also provide elderly care, chronic disease management, rehabilitation guidance and palliative care (in communities),” it said. “Currently, over 4,000 medical institutions across the nation offer more than 60 types of door-to-door nursing services of seven different categories.”

The commission added that more than 85 percent of medical institutions now provide continuity of care, which involves offering online nursing consultations, follow-up care and home-based nursing guidance to address needs for routine care and specialized nursing after patients leave the hospital.

The Andhra Pradesh government has granted property tax exemption to houses owned by Indian Defence personnel within the gram panchayat limits in the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan made an announcement to this effect through a post on ‘X’ on Sunday night.

The Jana Sena leader stated that the NDA government under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has taken a decision as a mark of deep respect and gratitude to brave soldiers.

“The Panchayat Raj Department has taken a significant decision, to grant property tax exemption to houses belonging to personnel of the Indian Defence Forces within Gram Panchayat limits. This decision honours the unwavering courage of our defence forces Army, Navy, and Air Force, Paramilitary, CRPF personnel who dedicate their lives for the security of our nation,” stated Pawan Kalyan.

The actor-politician mentioned that until now, this exemption was available only to retired army personnel or those serving on the borders. “Today, we have decided to go a step further. From now on, all active personnel of the Indian Defence Forces, regardless of where they are posted, will be eligible for this benefit. The exemption will apply to one house in which they or their spouse reside or jointly own,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that this decision has been taken based on the recommendation of the Director of Sainik Welfare and stands as a token of Andhra Pradesh’s gratitude to the uniformed heroes. “Our government stands firmly with every soldier and their family. Their service is priceless, and it is our duty to honour it in every way possible,” he added.

Pawan Kalyan on Sunday paid his last respects to soldier Murali Naik, who was killed in cross-border firing along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir during Operation Sindoor.

The Deputy Chief Minister stated that Murali’s journey from the tribal hamlet of Gorantla, Kallithanda village in Sri Sathya Sai district, to the frontlines of National Defence as Agniveer is marked by his determination and great love for the motherland.

“Even though he had other career opportunities, he chose to join the Indian Army. This reflects his extreme level of commitment to serve the Nation. Murali Naik’s story of sacrifice is an embodiment of the countless heroes who stand tall at our borders amid severe challenges and tough conditions, with their unwavering resolve to safeguard and shield our country. The overwhelming crowd that gathered to honour the soldier is a testament to show that his family is not alone,” Pawan Kalyan said.

The state government announced ex gratia of Rs 50 lakh for Murali Naik’s parents, along with the allotment of five acres of agricultural land, and a 300-square-yard house site.

  • End of an era: Virat Kohli announces retirement from Test cricket

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Indian cricket stalwart and former captain Virat Kohli on Monday announced his retirement from Test cricket.

The decision came after it was reported that Kohli had communicated his decision to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of next month’s five-match Test series against England.

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life,” Kohli wrote in his Instagram post.

“There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever. As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for.

“I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way. I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile. #269, signing off,” he added.

In less than a week, both Kohli and Rohit Sharma have retired from the longest format of the game which will leave the Indian team without much experience in the batting department.

Kohli, who made his Test debut in 2011, has been a cornerstone of India’s red-ball resurgence over the past decade. His aggressive captaincy, prolific batting and unmatched intensity have helped transform India into a formidable Test side both at home and abroad.

Kohli will bid adieu to his Test career with 9230 runs in 123 matches at an impressive average of 46.85 with 30 centuries and 51 half-centuries. He hangs up his spikes as the fourth-most successful Test captain overall, behind Graeme Smith (53 wins), Ricky Ponting (48 wins), and Steve Waugh (41 wins).

Kohli’s 30 Test centuries make him the fourth-most successful India batter, behind Sachin Tendulkar (51 hundreds), Rahul Dravid (36), and Sunil Gavaskar (34). Kohli also made seven Test double hundreds, the most ever by an Indian. He also has the most Test hundreds by an Indian captain, with Gavaskar (11 centuries) way behind his 20 tons.

The right-handed batter previously announced his retirement from the T20I format after India’s T20 World Cup triumph last year. The 36-year-old will now only feature in ODI cricket for India.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: China and Russia: Friendship between the two states begins with friendship between peoples

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: People’s Republic of China in Russian – People’s Republic of China in Russian –

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Russia. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further deepening the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation in the new era. It is especially important to hear such statements in the era of global instability. Russian-Chinese relations are not just diplomacy and economics, but also a history of sincere friendship, respect and mutual understanding. Having lived in China for more than five years, I realized that true friendship between countries begins with friendship between people.

Connecting Peoples – Beyond Economics and Trade

To truly understand another culture, information from books, travel or news is not enough, you need to experience it from the inside, through work, study and communication. For more than five years, China was my home, a place where I learned Chinese, gained valuable professional experience and made friends with whom I still maintain warm ties. China became a part of my identity: I learned to think more broadly, to see the world through the eyes of others and to appreciate differences. Over the years, I have seen that the relationship between China and Russia is not limited to economics and trade, they are connected by many human stories like mine.

    The Language That Changed Lives

My first encounter with China was in 2006, when I visited Beijing on a tourist trip. Even then, it felt like the country was on the verge of big changes, although high-speed trains and large-scale international projects were still to come. When I returned to China in 2009 to study Chinese, I had no idea how important this choice would become. Chinese became for me not just a communication tool, but also a bridge between cultures and a powerful asset.

The work that opened up a whole world

Later, I got a job at a Chinese media outlet in Beijing, where I contributed to stories for overseas audiences. We covered Chinese innovations in agriculture, infrastructure development, poverty eradication, and the preservation of intangible cultural heritage. It was an invaluable experience: I saw China from different sides, not only through official data, but also through people’s stories, dreams, and aspirations. Each article became a new step toward mutual understanding.

Personal connections as a path to understanding

Every day, living and working in China, I admired the hard work of the Chinese people, their willingness to learn and develop. I saw how cities were changing rapidly, innovations were being introduced, and Chinese technologies were spreading around the world. This progress was impressive, but even more impressive was the human warmth. My friends and colleagues were interested in asking about Russia and sharing their stories. We exchanged experiences and views – it is these personal connections that, as I now understand, create a solid foundation for international relations.

Respect as the basis of trust

It was especially valuable to feel the respectful attitude towards Russia on the part of the Chinese. In contrast to the criticism that can often be heard in the West, in China I encountered genuine interest in Russia and admiration for Russian culture. This strengthened my confidence in the future partnership of our countries. It seems to me that it is respect, openness and trust that become the foundation of strong relations between states, starting from the level of ordinary people.

The Future in Dialogue: Language, Science, Culture

Today, Russian-Chinese relations go beyond traditional trade and economic cooperation, embracing science, education, and culture. Educational projects, scientific research, and academic exchanges play a special role. More and more young people are learning each other’s languages, which opens up new horizons and builds trust. Cultural exchanges – festivals, exhibitions, theater productions, film screenings – help to understand mentalities, strengthen interest and mutual sympathy. Art is becoming a universal language that overcomes barriers.

    Strength lies in shared values

I have always been touched by the similarity of our cultural values: respect for elders, high value of education, hospitality. These common foundations, as I have understood from personal experience, are truly a strong foundation for the friendship of our peoples and countries.

    Conclusion: Looking to the Future

Watching the development of Chinese-Russian relations today, I feel joy. For me, this is not just the history of two states, it is also the history of two peoples who want to understand and respect each other. I believe that we still have many joint steps ahead, each of which begins with dialogue, mutual interest and trust.

  • MIL-OSI China: Volunteers reopen free canteen for seniors

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

A group of volunteers in Hukou county, Jiangxi province, have chipped in to reopen a village canteen to provide free meals for the local elderly residents.

Chenhetangwan village in the county once had a government-sponsored canteen, but the limited annual budget of 10,000 yuan ($1,400) made it unfeasible for it to provide free meals to the seniors and so it was forced to close.

The small village of only 400 residents has 60 residents over the age of 65, and the closure of the canteen meant that these people no longer had a cheap and convenient place to eat.

Local Chen Yingpeng saw this and decided to round up a group of volunteers and open a new canteen to feed the elderly.

The canteen, known as the Happiness Canteen, is located next to the village activity center and has the capacity to accommodate over 50 diners at a time.

“I grew up in this village, so I’m familiar with the needs of our senior residents,” Chen said. “Many of them are living alone, often without spouses, which makes it difficult for them to cook for themselves at home. So I gathered a group of kindhearted villagers to raise funds and set up a free canteen.”

The canteen receives its primary funding from subsidies provided by local governments and the fundraising endeavors of empathetic individuals.

To improve the management of the canteen, a five-person team was formed. The canteen’s expenses are settled weekly to ensure transparency, with estimated annual costs exceeding 100,000 yuan.

The canteen provides free breakfast and lunch, attracting an increasing number of senior diners.

“Almost all the seniors in the village come here to eat. There are more than 50 people here every day,” Chen said.

The canteen is closed on Sundays and holidays to allow families to spend time together.

With the exception of elderly individuals who have health issues, all residents age 65 and above take turns daily to assist with meal preparation and cleaning. The chefs and assistants are all local residents.

Assistant cook You Qingchun said, “We take turns to work to ensure everyone gets a hot meal.”

Another duty roster member, Chen Hezhi, said: “The senior people gather here happily. If someone misses a meal, we immediately contact and confirm with their family.”

Chen Zhizhong, a philanthropic individual actively engaged in fundraising for the canteen, said that its presence has created a sense of comfort for both the seniors who dine together and their children who work outside.

“Since the canteen opened, we are all very happy. Many of us from the same village often work away from home, which can be concerning as our parents remain in the village and are getting older,” he said.

“We believe the canteen is incredibly meaningful, as it brings happiness, health and joy to the seniors in the village while allowing the younger generation working outside to focus on their jobs with peace of mind.”

Elderly resident Chen Guixi and his wife are among the canteen’s frequent customers.

“Since the canteen opened, we go there every day for our meals. There are a lot of options for food and the environment is clean and hygienic, making it a nice place to eat,” Chen said.

  • MIL-OSI China: Australian PM announces cabinet of his 2nd term

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday announced the cabinet of his second term before a swearing-in ceremony with Governor-General Sam Mostyn on Tuesday.

“I intend to recommend to the Governor-General, Her Excellency, Sam Mostyn, the following make-up of the ministry to be sworn in tomorrow at 9 a.m. It will be followed by a full ministry meeting here in Parliament House,” Albanese said.

He said Labor has the largest caucus in history since the federation.

As of Monday, Labor was on track to win a clear majority of around 93 of the 150 seats in the lower house of parliament, as 83.9 percent of votes had been counted while five more seats remain “in doubt,” according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Labor has never previously held more than 90 seats in the lower house of parliament and no party has ever held more than 94.

Announcing his new cabinet, Albanese said it will be “a caucus brimming with capacity, talent and energy in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.”

“For the entire caucus going forward to put in place the agenda that we put forward positively to the Australian people and an ambitious agenda to change this country for the better,” he said, adding “I am deeply humbled by the trust that was put into my government with the election and we certainly won’t take it for granted.”

Albanese has urged the elected members of his Labor Party to maintain a focus on working for all Australians after winning re-election, during the Labor caucus convened last Friday.

  • MIL-OSI China: Barca close in on title, Betis slip up in European race

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

FC Barcelona could be confirmed as La Liga champions for this season either Wednesday or Thursday night after winning a thrilling Clasico at home to Real Madrid 4-3.

The result leaves Barca seven points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, and if Madrid fails to beat Mallorca on Wednesday night, Barca will be confirmed as champions, although a win away to local rival Espanyol on Thursday would also ensure the title.

Kylian Mbappe got Madrid off to a flying start on a sunny afternoon in Montjuic, winning and then scoring a penalty to open the scoring after just five minutes and then adding a second eight minutes later.

Eric Garcia headed Barca back into the match in the 19th minute and Hansi Flick’s side took total control, with Lamine Yamal equalizing with a wonderful curling shot and two goals from Raphinha leaving a leaky Madrid defense in evidence.

Mbappe completed a hat-trick in the second half, and both he and youngster Victor Munoz had chances to make it 4-4, but Barca should also have been given a clear penalty when Aurelien Tchouameni clearly blocked Ferran Torres’ goal-bound shot with his arm.

Athletic Bilbao remains fourth after a hard-fought 1-0 win at home to Alaves in a game of few chances which was finally decided by Manu Sanchez’s own goal, as he looked to clear the ball 20 minutes from time.

Athletic was missing several key players with injury and suspension, and despite making hard work of the game, the result could be hugely significant after Real Betis was held to a 1-1 draw at home to Osasuna.

Chucho Hernandez put Betis ahead in the 64th minute, but Ante Budimir’s goal 11 minutes from time earned his side a draw.

Leganes took three big points in the battle to avoid relegation with a 3-2 win at home to Espanyol, with Seydouba Cisse, Yan Diomande and a Marash Kumbulla own goal putting the team from the south of Madrid 3-0 up in the 64th minute.

Leandro Carbera pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 79th minute, and although Pere Milla’s 98th minute effort will have caused some nerves, it was too late for Espanyol to complete its fightback.

On Saturday, Alexander Sorloth scored four first-half goals, with three arriving in a four-minute spell, as third-placed Atletico Madrid brushed aside a Real Sociedad side that seems to be looking ahead to life without coach Imanol Alguacil.

Real captain Mikel Oyarzabal apologized after the game for his side’s first-half display.

A late goal from Etta Eyong saw Villarreal win 1-0 away to Girona, which remains in the relegation dogfight, with coach Michel Sanchez watching from his hospital bed due to health reasons.

Valencia also turned on the style in the first half, with goals from Pepelu, Diego Lopez and Hugo Duro – the first and third from the penalty spot – providing a 3-0 win against Getafe and giving Valencia an outside chance of playing in Europe next season.

Mallorca also kept its European hopes alive with a 2-1 win at home to hapless Real Valladolid.

A group of Sevilla fans forced their way into the club’s training ground on Saturday night to protest at the club’s 3-2 defeat to Celta Vigo, who played for 45 minutes with 10 men after Marcos Alonso was sent off for handball.

Despite having a player less, Celta led 3-1 with goals from Ilaix Moriba, Oscar Mingueza and Borja Iglesias before Kike Salas headed a 98th-minute goal that was scant consolation for Sevilla.

Argentinos Juniors advanced to the quarterfinals of Argentina’s Primera Division Apertura tournament with a 3-1 home win over 10-man Instituto Cordoba on Sunday.

Tomas Molina and Jose Herrera scored for the hosts in the space of three second-half minutes, but Gonzalo Requena reduced the deficit with a towering header in the 71st minute.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Nicolas Zalazar was shown a second yellow card for a bad challenge four minutes from time.

Argentinos Juniors put the result beyond doubt through Ismael Sosa, who tapped home from point-blank range after his initial attempt was blocked.

“This team is very passionate. These games are like finals and each stage will be more difficult,” Argentinos Juniors manager Nicolas Diez told a post-match news conference.

“What is most satisfying for me is the knowledge that our fans will go home tonight very happy.”

In other round of 16 matches on Sunday, Independiente progressed to the last eight with a 1-0 home win over Independiente Rivadavia, and Huracan advanced by prevailing 3-2 at home to Deportivo Riestra.

Club America and Cruz Azul reached the semifinals of Mexico’s Liga MX Clausura tournament by winning their respective quarterfinal ties on Sunday.

After a goalless draw in the first leg, Club America raced to a 2-0 lead in its home clash against Pachuca courtesy of two goals in the opening half hour from United States international forward Alejandro Zendejas.

The visitors were dealt another blow just before halftime when Morocco international winger Oussama Idrissi was sent off for a second yellow-card offense.

Club America was in cruise control for most of the second half as it kept alive its bid for a fourth straight Mexican top-flight title.

“We were consistent and clinical, which is exactly how I want us to be,” America manager Andre Jardine told a post-match news conference.

“Whoever we come up against in the semifinals, we have to be prepared. We don’t feel like we are the favorites. The teams that have made it this far have done so on merit, and we know we have to be at our best to beat them.”

Meanwhile, Cruz Azul edged to a 2-1 home victory over Leon to prevail in its quarterfinal 5-3 on aggregate.

Ignacio Rivero put the hosts ahead from close range, but Jhonder Cadiz equalized with a composed finish on the counterattack.

Chilean midfielder Rodrigo Echeverria gifted Cruz Azul the lead when he slid the ball into his own net while attempting to cut out a dangerous Amaury Morales cross from the right wing.

  • Democratic-led states sue to block Trump’s halting of wind projects

    Source: Government of India (4)

A coalition of Democratic state attorneys general sued on Monday in a bid to block President Donald Trump’s move to suspend leasing and permitting of new wind projects, saying it threatens to cripple the wind industry and a key source of clean energy.

Seventeen states and the District of Columbia in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Boston argued that the decision by the Republican president’s administration to indefinitely pause all federal wind-energy approvals is unlawful and must be blocked.

The lawsuit, led by New York state, accused Trump of exceeding his authority and said his administration violated federal administrative law by not offering any detailed justification for the suspension.

“This administration is devastating one of our nation’s fastest-growing sources of clean, reliable and affordable energy,” New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, said in a statement.

The lawsuit seeks a court order declaring the indefinite pause unlawful and barring the agencies including the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency from implementing Trump’s directive.

White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers accused the Democratic attorneys general of “using lawfare to stop the president’s popular energy agenda.”

“The American people voted for the president to restore America’s energy dominance, and Americans in blue states should not have to pay the price of the Democrats’ radical climate agenda,” Rogers said in a statement.

Trump announced the pause on his first day back in office on January 20 when he directed his administration in a presidential memorandum to halt offshore wind lease sales and stop the issuance of permits, leases and loans for both onshore and offshore wind projects.

He did so while also moving to ramp up the federal government’s support for the fossil fuel industry and maximize output in the United States, the world’s top oil and gas producer, after campaigning for the presidency on the refrain of “drill, baby, drill.”

Trump as a candidate last year promised to end the offshore wind industry, arguing it is too expensive and hurts whales and birds. In announcing the pause, Trump again cited the expense of wind projects and said they “ruin your beautiful landscapes.”

After Trump’s memorandum, U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum in April directed the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s acting director to order a unit of Norwegian energy firm EquinorEQNR.OL to halt construction on its Empire Wind offshore wind project off New York.

The states in their lawsuit argue that Trump’s directive harmed their efforts to secure reliable, diversified sources of energy and jeopardized billions of dollars they have already invested in the industry as part of their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change.

In their lawsuit, the states said the agencies implementing Trump’s order never said why they were abruptly changing longstanding policy supporting wind energy development and were departing from government findings that wind projects can proceed with minimal adverse effects on the environment.

The lawsuit also said Congress never authorized the president to categorically halt wind-energy projects and that the agencies implementing the pause exceeded their authority under numerous laws including the Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act and the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Reps Beatty and Kim Host Bipartisan Financial Education Resource Fair on Capitol Hill

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (3rd District of Ohio)

WASHINGTON, DC – On Tuesday, May 6, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (D-OH-03) and Congresswoman Young Kim (R-CA-40), Co-Chairs of the Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus, hosted a free, bipartisan Financial Education Resource Fair on Capitol Hill. The event connected members of the public, Congressional staff and community stakeholders with trusted financial tools and expert guidance to promote financial security and wealth-building.

Representatives from more than 30 government agencies, nonprofits, and financial institutions were on hand to share strategies and resources on topics such as savings, budgeting, credit and debt management, retirement planning, investing, and fraud protection.

According to the 2024 Consumer Financial Literacy and Preparedness Survey by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, 80 percent of adults in the United States say they could benefit from additional guidance on everyday financial questions. Additionally, data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) shows that at least 14.2 percent of U.S. households—nearly 19 million—are unbanked or underbanked, lacking access to essential services like savings, lending, and other basic financial tools.

The event began with opening remarks from Congresswoman Beatty and Congresswoman Kim.

“Every American deserves the knowledge and tools to navigate our financial system and make it work for them,” said Congresswoman Joyce Beatty. “That’s why I’m grateful to the organizations that joined us today to support attendees in their pursuit of financial education and empowerment. With the help of nonprofits, financial institutions, and government agencies committed to financial literacy, the Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus is equipping Americans to achieve financial stability, grow wealth, and move closer to financial freedom.”

“Financial literacy is a lifelong journey,” said Congresswoman Young Kim. “I appreciate stakeholders joining us to share vital resources to help attendees learn more about financial education as we celebrate Financial Literacy Month. As Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus co-chair, I’ll keep working with bipartisan colleagues and the Trump administration on policies that help Americans grow their credit, get a leg up, and achieve the American Dream.”

“CFP Board applauds the Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus, and Co-Chairs Kim and Beatty, for bringing together key leaders committed to advancing financial education and literacy initiatives,” said Erin Koeppel, Managing Director of Government Relations and Public Policy Counsel at CFP Board. “Through our work to expand access to competent and ethical financial planning, CFP Board and CFP® professionals across the country share the caucus’ goal of expanding access to financial guidance and helping more Americans understand the resources available to them.”

“PBS LearningMedia is committed to helping students acquire knowledge and build the real-world skills they need to thrive in school and life. Interactives and games are powerful tools that make financial literacy both fun and meaningful.  We are honored that our work supports the goals of Representatives Young Kim and Joyce Beatty, the Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus co-chairs.  By challenging students to think critically about financial decisions in an engaging, story-driven format, PBS LearningMedia resources help drive deeper learning that sticks,” Lori Brittain, Vice President PBS LearningMedia.

“First Command is committed to providing all U.S. service members – and their families — the financial tools they need to attain financial readiness and stability,” said First Command CEO Mark Steffe.“Ensuring military spouses can obtain employment and create a financial roadmap for their family is equally important, and we appreciate the diligent work the Congressional Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus performs in this endeavor. Today’s event highlights the important steps being taken to improve the livelihoods of our servicemembers, and we look forward to a long-lasting partnership with the Caucus.”

“TIAA is committed to securing retirements for millions more American workers, especially at a time when 45% of U.S. households are projected to run short of money in retirement. A greater understanding of how much monthly income a worker will need to replace to last throughout retirement is key to a secure financial future,” said Chris Spence, Head of Government Relations and Public Policy at TIAA. “We appreciate today’s event and collaboration with the Congressional Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus, particularly Representatives Beatty and Kim, for supporting increased access to financial education, literacy, and retirement savings resources.”

About the Congressional Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus

The Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus endeavors to provide Americans with the tools and resources necessary for economic stability, wealth generation, and prosperity. This caucus develops and advocates for comprehensive, result-driven strategies that empower individuals to make sound financial decisions, achieve their economic objectives, and secure a robust financial foundation for themselves and future generations. Nadda was also briefed on the operational status of all hospitals and health facilities during the meeting, with particular emphasis on monitoring mechanisms in place.

The meeting came in the wake of Pakistan’s attempted retaliation following Operation Sindoor, where the Indian Armed Forces targeted nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Wednesday. The operation was a direct response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Earlier today, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also conducted a review of the country’s current security situation at South Block, which houses the Ministry of Defence, in the national capital, in the aftermath of the foiled large-scale drone strike by Pakistan.

The Defence Minister was accompanied by the military top brass and senior officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, and Defence Secretary RK Singh.

  • Health inequities shortening lives by more than 30 years in poor countries: WHO

Poor social determinants of health are cutting life expectancy in low-income countries by more than 30 years, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO defines social determinants of health as conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age.

The report noted that beyond the health sector, factors such as lack of quality housing, education, and job opportunities can dramatically reduce life expectancy.

It said that people in the country with the lowest life expectancy will, on average, live 33 years shorter than those born in the country with the highest life expectancy.

“Children born in poorer countries are 13 times more likely to die before the age of 5 than in wealthier countries,” the report said.

Women from disadvantaged groups are also more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes.

“Our world is an unequal one. Where we are born, grow, live, work, and age significantly influence our health and well-being,” WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

“Addressing the interlinked social determinants” can help, he added.

Further, the report showed that 3.8 billion people worldwide are deprived of adequate social protection coverage, such as child/paid sick leave benefits, with a direct and lasting impact on their health outcomes.

High debt burdens have been crippling the capacity of governments to invest in these services. As a result, the total value of interest payments made by the world’s 75 poorest countries has increased four-fold in the last decade.

Worryingly, the report also cited “sufficient evidence to show that health inequities within countries are often widening”.

Closing the gap and enhancing equity between the poorest and wealthiest sectors of the population within low- and middle-income countries can help save the lives of 1.8 million children annually, revealed modelling studies.

The report also provides evidence-based strategies and policy recommendations to help countries improve health outcomes for all.

WHO emphasises that measures to address income inequality, structural discrimination, conflict, and climate disruptions are key to overcoming deep-seated health inequities.

Researchers from United Arab Emirates University have created an enhanced technology for monitoring blood flow without surgery, using piezoelectric pressure sensors. The innovation measures crucial physiological parameters including blood flow velocity and viscosity by utilizing materials that generate electric fields when subjected to mechanical stress.

The improved version delivers greater accuracy in data interpretation while being more cost-effective than existing alternatives, making it suitable for deployment in both clinical and home environments. The technology provides real-time monitoring capabilities that can help detect potentially dangerous conditions such as blood clots.

“Our goal is to improve an existing technology to make it more accurate and user-friendly, benefiting both patients and healthcare providers,” said Professor Mahmoud Al Ahmad, who supervised the research team. “It is worth mentioning that this project provided a training opportunity for four undergraduate students in scientific research.”

The team plans to incorporate artificial intelligence in future iterations to further enhance the system’s capabilities and expand its applications. This development aligns with the UAE’s strategic vision to advance medical technology and reduce dependence on imported healthcare solutions.

The innovation strengthens the local medical device manufacturing sector and supports the UAE’s ongoing transition toward a knowledge-based economy. By creating more accessible diagnostic tools, the research contributes to promoting health equity and providing accurate, affordable medical diagnostics globally.
