  • MIL-OSI Global: The best space telescope you never heard of just shut down

Source: The Conversation – Global Perspectives – By Laura Nicole Driessen, Postdoctoral Researcher in Radio Astronomy, University of Sydney

    ESA / Gaia / DPAC, CC BY-SA

On Thursday 27 March, the European Space Agency (ESA) sent its last messages to the Gaia Spacecraft. They told Gaia to shut down its communication systems and central computer and said goodbye to this amazing space telescope.

Gaia has been the most successful ESA space mission ever, so why did they turn Gaia off? What did Gaia achieve? And perhaps most importantly, why was it my favourite space telescope?

    Running on empty

Gaia was retired for a simple reason: after more than 11 years in space, it ran out of the cold gas propellant it needed to keep scanning the sky.

The telescope did its last observation on 15 January 2025. The ESA team then performed testing for a few weeks, before telling Gaia to leave its home at a point in space called L2 and start orbiting the Sun away from Earth.

L2 is one of five “Lagrangian points” around Earth and the Sun where gravitational conditions make for a nice, stable orbit. L2 is located 1.5 million kilometres from Earth on the “dark side”, opposite the Sun.

L2 is a highly prized location because it’s a stable spot to orbit, it’s close enough to Earth for easy communication, and spacecraft can use the Sun behind them for solar power while looking away from the Sun out into space.

It’s also too far away from Earth to send anyone on a repair mission, so once your spacecraft gets there it’s on its own.

    Keeping L2 clear

L2 currently hosts the James Webb Space Telescope (operated by the USA, Europe and Canada), the European Euclid mission, the Chinese Chang’e 6 orbiter and the joint Russian-German Spektr-RG observatory. Since L2 is such a key location for space missions, it’s essential to keep it clear of debris and retired spacecraft.

A final status update from Gaia.
    ESA, CC BY-SA

Gaia used its thrusters for the last time to push itself away from L2, and is now drifting around the Sun in a “retirement orbit” where it won’t get in anybody’s way.

As part of the retirement process, the Gaia team wrote farewell messages into the craft’s software and sent it the names of around 1,500 people who worked on Gaia over the years.

    What is Gaia?

Gaia looks a bit like a spinning top hat in space. Its main mission was to produce a detailed, three-dimensional map of our galaxy, the Milky Way.

To do this, it measured the precise positions and motions of 1.46 billion objects in space. Gaia also measured brightnesses and variability and those data were used to provide temperatures, gravitational parameters, stellar types and more for millions of stars. One of the key pieces of information Gaia provided was the distance to millions of stars.

    A cosmic measuring tape

I’m a radio astronomer, which means I use radio telescopes here on Earth to explore the Universe. Radio light is the longest wavelength of light, invisible to human eyes, and I use it to investigate magnetic stars.

But even though I’m a radio astronomer and Gaia was an optical telescope, looking at the same wavelengths of light our eyes can see, I use Gaia data almost every single day.

I used it today to find out how far away, how bright, and how fast a star was. Before Gaia, I would probably never have known how far away that star was.

This is essential for figuring out how bright the stars I study really are, which helps me understand the physics of what’s happening in and around them.

    A huge success

Gaia has contributed to thousands of articles in astronomy journals. Papers released by the Gaia collaboration have been cited well over 20,000 times in total.

Gaia has produced too many science results to share here. To take just one example, Gaia improved our understanding of the structure of our own galaxy by showing that it has multiple spiral arms that are less sharply defined than we previously thought.

Not really the end for Gaia

It’s difficult to express how revolutionary Gaia has been for astronomy, but we can let the numbers speak for themselves. Around five astronomy journal articles are published every day that use Gaia data, making Gaia the most successful ESA mission ever. And that won’t come to a complete stop when Gaia retires.

The Gaia collaboration has published three data releases so far. This is where the collaboration performs the processing and checks on the data, adds some important analysis and releases all of that in one big hit.

And luckily, there are two more big data releases with even more information to come. The fourth data release is expected in mid to late 2026. The fifth and final data release, containing all of the Gaia data from the whole mission, will come out sometime in the 2030s.

This article is my own small tribute to a telescope that changed astronomy as we know it. So I will end by saying a huge thank you to everyone who has ever worked on this amazing space mission, whether it was engineering and operations, turning the data into the amazing resource it is, or any of the other many jobs that make a mission successful. And thank you to those who continue to work on the data as we speak.

Finally, thank you to my favourite space telescope. Goodbye, Gaia, I’ll miss you.

Laura Nicole Driessen is an ambassador for the Orbit Centre of Imagination at the Rise and Shine Kindergarten, in Sydney’s Inner West.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: FOCUS ON: In Barbados, Multi-Hazard Early Warning System saves lives

    Source: UNISDR Disaster Risk Reduction

Hurricane Beryl, the first major hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, left a trail of destruction across multiple Caribbean islands. At major Category 4 strength, Beryl was the strongest hurricane ever recorded in June. Entire communities were left in ruins, with infrastructure crippled and thousands displaced in Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Despite the damage incurred, compared to the 176 homes damaged and one fatality caused by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the destruction in 2024 was slight. That Beryl’s impact in Barbados was not far greater is largely due to the country’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS).

The importance of MHEWS, which safeguard lives and reduce the impact of disasters, cannot be overstated. The EW4All initiative exemplifies the power of combining advanced technology, effective communication strategies and local knowledge. EW4All enhances community preparedness and response capabilities, fostering resilience across vulnerable populations.

Barbados recently approved its MHEWS policy, establishing clear roles, sustainability and financing. The Barbados Meteorological Service, the Department of Emergency

Management and Government Information Service collaborated effectively to provide timely warnings. Advanced technology, including satellite imagery leveraged through partnerships with Microsoft and MapAction, enabled swift, targeted responses to infrastructure damage.

The lessons learned from Hurricane Beryl will guide future efforts to improve preparedness, response and recovery, ensuring the safety and well-being of communities across the region. Barbados’ success is now being shared globally, with peer-to-peer learning exchanges extending to African Indian Ocean Island countries. This highlights the importance of engagement and coordination among national sectors and regional entities.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: FOCUS ON: Empowering women and transforming disaster resilience

    Source: UNISDR Disaster Risk Reduction

The need for gender-responsive and inclusive DRR has never been more urgent. Hazards and risks are not experienced equally; women, in particular, face unique challenges that compound the impacts of disasters. Yet amid these challenges, UNDRR is championing a transformative approach that ensures no one is left behind, not only reducing risks but also empowering communities to build a more resilient future.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Network for Disaster Risk Reduction has over 1,535 active members. Operating through autonomous working groups and guided by a robust long-term strategic plan, the network is redefining disaster resilience in the region. Liliam Patricia Cuevas Berrio from the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction affirmed:

The Women’s Network for Disaster Risk Reduction is a unique platform that highlights the vital role women play in disaster risk management. It fosters a sense of shared commitment and responsibility among its members, providing an opportunity for collaboration, learning and empowerment. Initiatives like these are essential to advancing resilience and ensuring inclusive governance in the region.

The Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities: Addendum for Gender Equality and Intersectionality has enabled local governments to diagnose gaps in their DRR strategies and implement tailored, gender-sensitive actions. This tool not only identifies weaknesses but also highlights opportunities for growth, ensuring that disaster response plans incorporate the perspectives and needs of all community members. Such initiatives are laying the groundwork for systemic change by transforming data into actionable insights and making gender equity a central pillar of disaster governance.

Beyond the Americas, the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Manila broke new ground by establishing the first-ever Help Desk on gender-responsive and socially inclusive DRR. Its findings are already steering future interventions towards more meaningful dialogue and action.

Perhaps the most ambitious of these efforts is the Sendai Gender Action Plan (GAP), launched in March 2024. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic has integrated the GAP into its National DRR Action Plan, directly addressing the unique risks faced by women and girls. As one Lao People’s Democratic Republic government representative stated, highlighting the transformative impact of this global initiative: “The Sendai GAP has been instrumental in helping us integrate gender-responsive strategies into our DRR action plan. It ensures that the needs of all our people are addressed during every step of the process.”

Similarly, in Cambodia, collaborative efforts between UNDRR and UN-Women have enriched national strategies with diverse gender perspectives. In Samoa, enhanced capacities for collecting disaggregated data have provided clearer insights into how disasters affect different groups, leading to more targeted DRR interventions. Initiatives in Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan have further bolstered gender-responsive governance.

The journey towards gender-responsive DRR is not without challenges. Persistent gender inequalities and entrenched social biases continue to pose risks that are often magnified during disasters. However, UNDRR is fostering environments where women and girls can lead the way in building safer, more resilient communities.

In 2024, UNDRR also made strides in championing disability inclusion, advocating for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in DRR at international events and in key discourses. Key moments included presentations at the thirtieth session of the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Summit of the Future high-level event on disability inclusion and the Equality Conference in Ankara.

Closer to home, UNDRR implemented its disability inclusion policy, achieving milestones such as recruiting staff with disabilities, developing guidelines for reasonable accommodation, and ensuring participation of persons with disabilities in regional DRR platforms. Awareness was raised through publications and social media, and the UNDRR United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy focal point actively supported policy implementation.

Efforts extended to making workshops and webinars accessible, updating conference registration templates and ensuring accessible options for Disability Inclusion Scorecard workshops globally. UNDRR’s communication and knowledge management activities featured numerous content pieces on disability, garnering significant engagement on social media, to further spread the important message of inclusive DRR and how to make it happen.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: FOCUS ON: Cultivating resilience through strong governance in Colombia

    Source: UNISDR Disaster Risk Reduction

In a world where climate change and food insecurity loom large, national governments across the Americas and the Caribbean are rallying to localize DRR efforts. Colombia stands out as a dynamic example, leveraging the Sendai Framework to build resilience from the ground up. With 178 cities already engaged in the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative, Colombia is inspiring neighbouring nations to accelerate local DRR actions.

At the heart of Colombia’s approach is its National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD). One of 10 national DRR departments in the region and a core partner of MCR2030, UNGRD has been instrumental in forging strong national–local linkages since the initiative’s launch in 2020. Working hand in hand with local governments, UNGRD has equipped communities with the tools and expertise needed to understand disaster risks and implement effective solutions. “Colombia is advancing local DRR to overcome the three main challenges of the Amazon region in terms of State presence, infrastructure, and the vulnerability of Indigenous communities to disaster risks,” explains Nelson Hernández of UNGRD, underscoring the critical role of local action in regions where government reach has historically been limited.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the small Amazonian town of Puerto Nariño, home to nearly 7,000 inhabitants – and highlighted as a “Green Getaway” by the BBC for its locally driven conservation efforts. Recently, an extreme drought dramatically lowered river levels, disrupting fishing and subsistence agriculture, a stark reminder of how climate change can upend traditional food systems. In response, UNGRD, alongside the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Environment Programme, conducted an integrated assessment of the town’s food systems and disaster resilience.

This equipped Puerto Nariño to craft a comprehensive local DRR strategy, weaving together climate change adaptation and robust food security measures. “WFP and UNDRR embrace an integrated vision for cross-border challenges in the Amazon region in the face of historic floods and droughts. Short supply chains that rely on forest products are being prioritized to foster environmental preservation, resilience and social benefits,” noted Raphael Leão, Programme Officer at WFP.

Colombia’s strategy of strengthening national–local linkages is more than a policy framework – it is a lifeline for communities.

As nations prepare for COP30 in Brazil, the lessons from Colombia offer a road map for resilience. By aligning local actions with national priorities and tailored United Nations methodologies, Colombia’s efforts pave the way for communities to better withstand climate shocks, secure food supplies and protect their way of life. The journey ahead is challenging, but with regional collaboration and innovative strategies, a sustainable future for the Amazon is within reach.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: FOCUS ON: How media and risk communication save lives

    Source: UNISDR Disaster Risk Reduction

UNDRR has long championed the critical role of communication in DRR. In 2024, the Media Saving Lives project conducted in partnership with the World Broadcasting Unions highlighted the importance of media as a vital component of MHEWS.

With a clear focus on ensuring that risk information reaches the last mile, the initiative strengthened linkages across national disaster management agencies, meteorological offices and national broadcasters. These collaborations ensured coordinated messaging during crises, fostering a more responsive and efficient early warning chain.

The project further supported broadcasting organizations to enhance their readiness and resilience in times of disaster. Six media organizations established new Standard Operating Procedures to ensure their continuity plans, so these can remain a lifeline for disaster-affected communities.

On the twentieth anniversary of the 2004 tsunami, six broadcasting houses collaborated on the production of a regional documentary series in the lead-up to the commemoration. The initiative culminated in an hour-long documentary, which examined lessons learned, technological advancements and the resilience of communities that experienced the tsunami’s devastating impact.

Through compelling storytelling, expert interviews and survivor testimonies, the documentary highlighted successful early warning interventions in high-risk coastal regions and reinforced the need for continuous investment in education, public awareness and coordinated DRR efforts.

A key milestone in 2024 was the first regional summit in Africa on DRR and climate change, alongside the launch of the Global Media Network for DRR in Bali. These events brought together media professionals to exchange experiences, discuss challenges and share good practices in disaster risk communication and disaster coverage.

In collaboration with BBC Media Action, the Risk Communication for Early Action project explored challenges and opportunities for media and communication to contribute to DRR. This initiative focused on three pilot countries: Cambodia (hard-to-reach populations), Somalia (conflict-affected communities) and Barbados (fisherfolk and elderly citizens).

In Maldives, UNDRR carried out a joint risk communication campaign with the National Disaster Management Authority, Maldives, and the Maldivian Red Crescent that was informed by a nationwide assessment of Maldivians’ understanding of disaster risks, early warning messages, and actions to reduce future losses and damages from hazardous events. Global tools, including a Pocket Guide for planning disaster risk communication to support early warning and early action and a Guide for Essential Research, were developed and piloted across the three countries, ensuring their real-world applicability.

Global tools, including a Pocket Guide for planning disaster risk communication to support early warning and early action and a Guide for Essential Research, were developed and piloted across the three countries, ensuring their real-world applicability.

The knowledge and materials produced through the Risk Communication for Early Action project have informed the development of the Disaster Risk Communication Hub on PreventionWeb. This global platform consolidates the best practices, research and tools to enhance disaster risk communication strategies worldwide. As a living knowledge platform, the hub ensures that the lessons learned through this initiative continue to shape future DRR efforts, inspiring collaboration and driving innovation in risk communication.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: SNP urged to publish impact assessment of ending renter protections

    Source: Scottish Greens

    Renters will see costs soaring.

The Scottish Government has been urged to publish an impact assessment of its decision to end renter protections that were introduced by the Scottish Greens.

The protections, which are set to expire on April 1st, were introduced by the then Green Minister Patrick Harvie following the year long rent freeze. This mechanism potentially allows rent increases to be limited to no higher than 12% if a tenant applies to a rent officer for a decision.

The Scottish Government had said the system would support the transition away from the rent cap and to the forthcoming system of Rent Control Areas, avoiding a ‘cliff edge’ for renters and protecting them from excessively large increases.

Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman said:

“A lot of renters are very worried about what will happen once these protections expire.

“At a time when costs and bills are already increasing, many are concerned that they will face excessive hikes at a time when they can least afford it. Meanwhile the landlord lobby will be rubbing their hands together with glee at the thought of hiking prices even further.

“These changes are unjust, unfair and will only result in people paying even more to keep a roof over their heads.

“The Scottish Government must have done research and modelling about the impact that its decision will have. It is time for them to publish it so that it can be scrutinised and so that renters know where they stand before they are thrown to the mercy of a broken housing market.”

    Ms Chapman added:

“These measures have helped tenants, but they have also underlined the urgent need for permanent and robust rent controls and protections for renters on the frontline of the housing emergency.

“Homes are for living in, not for profiteering, and we need a fundamental change to ensure that everyone has a warm, comfortable and affordable place to call home.”

    Press release

Prime Minister announces massive surge in immigration enforcement as returns reach 24,000 since the election

The Prime Minister today (Monday 31 March) announced the government has returned more than 24,000 individuals with no right to be in the UK since the General Election – the highest returns rate for eight years.

    • More than 24,000 people with no right to be here returned since July
    • Highest rate of returns in eight years
    • 21% increase enforced returns as government begins to restore order to immigration system under the Plan for Change

The Prime Minister today (Monday 31 March) announced the government has returned more than 24,000 individuals with no right to be in the UK since the General Election – the highest returns rate for eight years.

Speaking at the Organised Immigration Crime Summit, where over 40 countries and organisations have come together to agree new action to smash people-smuggling gangs, the Prime Minister outlined how the government is finally restoring order to the immigration system after years of failure.

The continued rise in removals includes a 21% increase in enforced returns and a 16% increase in foreign national offenders being removed from the UK since July 5th, including the 4 biggest returns charter flights in the UK’s history, with a total of more than 850 people on board.

The massive surge in removals followed the government’s immediate action to redeploy staff across the Home Office to work on policies that deliver results.

At the Summit the Prime Minister set out the approach this government is taking to finally take on organised immigration crime – one that moves beyond gimmicks and instead delivers hard graft, international leadership, and delivers on working people’s priorities for secure borders.

He set out how this is based on giving law enforcement tougher powers than ever to smash the smuggling gangs, ramping up removals to record levels, surging illegal working raids to end the false promise of jobs used by gangs to sell spaces on boats and leading a renewed international law enforcement effort.

Since taking office the government has reset its approach to global cooperation, striking new bilateral agreements with key international partners including France, Germany, Italy, and Balkan states to disrupt smuggling networks and accelerate removals.

This is backed by the work of Border Security Commander Martin Hewitt who has been negotiating new agreements to bring together international policing, intelligence, and border enforcement to dismantle organised immigration crime networks at home and abroad.

This work has already seen arrests of major people smuggling kingpins through joint investigations with the National Crime Agency.

    Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:

Immigration crime funds the vile people-smuggling gangs that trade in human misery, breach our borders and threaten Britain’s economic security. This government is taking back control, doing the hard graft needed to deliver results, working with our international allies to smash these gangs and secure our borders.

We’ve already removed more than 24,000 people with no right to be here and we’re finally shutting down exploitative illegal working, dismantling criminal networks, while forcing people-smuggling gangs out of business.

For too long, the UK was a soft touch. That ends now. No more gimmicks, no empty promises, just serious action for British security.

With over 40 international partners joining the UK’s call to treat people-smuggling like terrorism, today’s summit marks the beginning of a new global coalition to take the fight to the criminal gangs at every stage of the smuggling chain.

This is backed by landmark legislation through the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, giving new powers to seize migrants’ phones to identify smugglers, criminalise those who endanger lives at sea, and ensure every business carries out right-to-work checks – ending the exploitation of illegal labour for good.

    Additional information:

Between 5 July and 22 March 2025 there were 24,103 returns, the highest 9 month period compared to any 9-month period since 2017. Prior to this from Jan – Sept 2017, returns were 25,225.

Of total returns since 5 July 2024:

    • there were 6,339 enforced returns of people with no legal right to remain in the UK
    • 3,594 were of foreign national offenders (FNOs)
    • 6,781 were asylum related returns

From 5 July 2024 to 22 March 2025 there have been 46 charter flights for returns to countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America

New plan to focus on delivery.

Health Secretary Neil Gray has set out how the Scottish Government plans to improve access to treatment, reduce waiting times and shift the balance of care from hospitals to primary care through the publication of the Operational Improvement Plan.

Through the additional £200 million investment contained in the Budget to reduce waiting times and improve flow through hospital, we will create 150,000 extra appointments and procedures using greater use of regional and national working.

By introducing a seven-day service in radiology, using mobile scanning units and additional recruitment, 95% of referrals will be seen within six weeks by March 2026, reducing backlogs in MRI, CT, ultrasound and endoscopy procedures.

To improve flow in acute hospitals and support increases in community care, we will expand Hospital at Home to at least 2,000 beds by the end of 2026, meaning the service, which provides hospital level care in the comfort of the patients home, will become the biggest hospital in Scotland. By this summer there will be specialist staff in frailty teams in every A&E department in Scotland. Flow Navigation Centres, which direct patients to the most appropriate service for their condition, will be able to refer patients to more services, reducing the number of people who have to wait in A&E.

Investment in primary care will make it easier for people to see a doctor, dentist, optometrist or community pharmacist, and £10.5 million will be invested in general practice to take targeted action to prevent heart disease and frailty.

Digital services will be expanded to modernise services and improve efficiency, with the Digital Front Door app launching in Lanarkshire in December. This launch will be followed by a national roll-out in 2026, allowing people to securely access their hospital appointments, receive communications and find local services. Over time it will be expanded to include social care and community health services.

On a visit to Kirklands Hospital’s Flow Navigation Centre, Health Secretary Neil Gray said:

“This plan details how the Scottish Government will deliver a more accessible NHS, with reductions to long-waits and the pressures we currently see. It shows how we will use the £21.7 billion health and social care investment in the 2025-26 Budget to deliver significant improvements for patients.

“We want to increase the number of appointments, speed up treatment and make it easier to see a doctor. By better using digital technology, we will embrace innovation and increase efficiencies.

“This plan is ambitious but realistic, and builds on the incredible work of our amazing health and social care staff across our health boards, to deliver real change.”

    Background

    NHS Scotland Operational Improvement Plan

Focusing on the short term, the Operational Improvement Plan details specific commitments for NHS Scotland that build on the wider delivery plans of Scotland’s health boards. Supported by increased investment in the 2025-26 Scottish Budget, the plan focuses on four main areas:

    • Improving access to treatment
    • Shifting the balance of care from hospitals to primary care
    • Improving access to health and social care services through digital and technological innovation
    • Working with people to prevent illness and more proactively meet their needs.

A Stoke-on-Trent City Council tenant has been given a Civil Injunction Order after repeated anti-social behaviour (ASB).

Shamaine Proctor, who lives on Philip Street in Fenton, appeared in court after complaints about her abusive and threatening behaviour. The court was satisfied that she had acted aggressively towards residents, council workers, and contractors.

The injunction bans Miss Proctor from behaving in an anti-social manner towards her neighbours and from being abusive or threatening towards council staff or contractors. She has been also ordered to make sure any dog in her control is properly managed.

The action follows a robust investigation by the city council’s ASB Team who worked to gather evidence and bring the case to court.

Councillor Majid Khan, cabinet member for community resilience at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “This is a strong, clear message to all residents – anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. Everyone has the right to feel safe in their home and their community. If someone is threatening towards their neighbours or our council staff action will be taken. Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: State University of Management – Official website of the State –

Students of the State University of Management, who came to study in Russia from Vietnam, India, China, Nepal and Ethiopia, visited the Museum of Time and Clocks on an excursion.

The museum opened in November 2022 in Moscow with the support of the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives and the National Association of Watchmakers. The museum includes a retrospective exhibition dedicated to the development of watchmaking in Russia, temporary exhibitions, an event space for public lectures, conferences, master classes, discussions and round tables.

Most of the students of the State University of Management who visited the museum are currently studying at the preparatory department and are actively studying Russian, getting acquainted with our culture and history. One of the most interesting methods of immersion in the Russian environment for them was visiting museums.

This time, foreign students, accompanied by teacher Natalia Krylova, not only enthusiastically practiced their Russian language skills, but also learned about the history of Russian and Soviet watchmaking.

Time flew by. We are sure that the children have good memories of the excursion.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Wildland Fires Char U.S. Southeast Forests

    Source: NASA

On March 26, 2025, satellites observed several wildland fires in the western Carolinas and northeastern Georgia. Two prominent fires burning in the forested, mountainous terrain of western North Carolina are shown in these images (above) captured that day by the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on the Landsat 8 satellite.
The natural-color image (left) shows smoke pouring east-southeast toward Greenville and Spartanburg at around 12 p.m. local time (16:00 Universal Time). The right image shows the same area in false color, which combines shortwave infrared, near infrared, and visible components (OLI bands 7-5-4) of the electromagnetic spectrum. This band combination makes it easier to identify unburned vegetation (green) and recently burned landscape (dark brown).
The South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) reported that around the time of these images, the Table Rock fire had burned nearly 4,600 acres (18.6 square kilometers), doubling in size since the day before. Meanwhile, the Persimmon Ridge fire had burned 1,600 acres (6.5 square kilometers). By the evening of March 27, the burned areas had grown to nearly 8,700 acres and 2,000 acres, respectively, as efforts continued toward securing the fire’s perimeter and protecting structures.
An incident report issued on March 28 indicated that evacuation orders remained in place in parts of Greenville and Pickens counties. At the time, there were no reports of damages to homes.

SCFC called the fire weather on March 26 “extreme,” with low humidity and gusty winds. The fire commission also pointed to the abundance of dry fuels as a factor in the fire’s spread. In autumn 2024, Hurricane Helene downed trees and caused landslides in the region. A lack of significant rainfall has since allowed the tree debris to dry, which can contribute to the amount of combustible materials.
Notable fires also burned elsewhere in the region, visible in the wide view above. This image, captured by the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on the afternoon of March 26, shows the Big Ridge fire in northeastern Georgia and the Rattlesnake Branch fire in North Carolina. According to InciWeb, those fires had burned 1,936 acres (7.8 square kilometers) and 630 acres (2.5 square kilometers), respectively, as of March 28.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Governor Newsom proclaims Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day

Source: US State of California 2

    Mar 30, 2025

Sacramento, California – Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring March 30, 2025, as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.

The text of the proclamation and a copy can be found below:

    PROCLAMATION

It has been over a half century since the last American troops returned home from the Vietnam War, which claimed the lives of more than 58,000 U.S. service members, including 5,822 Californians. Today, we pay tribute to the courageous men and women who served and sacrificed in one of our nation’s most challenging wars.

During a time of great turmoil, Vietnam veterans answered our country’s call throughout more than a decade of harrowing combat – leaving many with lifelong scars, both visible and invisible. These veterans returned home to a deeply divided society and tragically did not receive the support and gratitude they deserved – a shameful reality we must never repeat.

Let us recommit to lifting up the legacy of our Vietnam veterans and upholding our fundamental duty to honor all service members with the support, gratitude, and respect they are rightfully owed. California is proud to stand by our veterans and remains committed to ensuring they and their families receive the care and benefits they have earned many times over.

NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim March 30, 2025, as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.”

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 28th day of March 2025.

Dignitaries congratulate first West Oʻahu project lease recipient.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    March 29, 2025

ʻEWA BEACH, OʻAHU – Nerves heightened and anticipation filled the room as more than 1,200 beneficiaries and their ‘ohana gathered at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in ʻEwa Beach. The group sat in eager anticipation while the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) prepared to announce the names of recipients for 665 project leases in West Oʻahu — the first such awards in more than 20 years.

Most have waited decades. Some before statehood.

“This is more than just awarding land; it’s about delivering on the promise of Prince Kūhiō and ensuring Native Hawaiian families have a permanent place to call home,” said Governor Josh Green, M.D. “Housing is healthcare — when people have stable, secure housing, their overall well-being improves. My administration is committed to making sure every family has that opportunity, and Saturday’s lease awards are a major step forward in that effort.”

The leases, 605 in Kaʻuluokahaʻi and 60 in Kaupeʻa, represent a significant step toward homeownership. This initiative is part of DHHL’s comprehensive approach to addressing its long-standing waitlist by expediting homesteading opportunities.

“These lease awards represent hope and progress,” said DHHL Director Kali Watson. “We are not just building homes; we are fostering communities. Our goal is to move as many beneficiaries as possible from the waitlist to the ʻāina, ensuring that Native Hawaiian families can create a legacy for future generations.”

Unlike previous processes, beneficiaries secure a homestead lot prior to the completion of development. This approach gives families the chance to prepare for both financial and program requirements, thereby ensuring long-term stability and the opportunity to transfer their leases to eligible successors.

“All my years living I’ve never experienced something like this, and I think this is the best,” said Roberta Akana, West O’ahu project lease awardee. “It’s magnificent.”

“When we house Hawaiians, we house Hawaiʻi,” said Representative Darius Kila (House District 44 – Honokai Hale, Nānākuli, Māʻili). Kila’s grandmother, on the waitlist since 1988, also received a lease that day.

Act 279, the department’s transformational $600 million allocation of general funds set forth in 2022 by the Hawaiʻi State Legislature, played a crucial role in the development of both homestead projects by providing the necessary infrastructure.

A New Era for Hawaiian Homesteads

The awards ceremony on Saturday, March 22, 2025, is the first of three major project lease distributions this year. DHHL will award an additional 400 leases in West Hawai‘i in April and nearly a thousand on Maui in the fall. The department’s ambitious plan aims to issue more than 6,000 project leases statewide over the next two years.

Eighty-year-old Lani Sanborn Ahuna has been on the Oʻahu residential waitlist for 22 years and said he was overwhelmed when he heard his name called.

“I cried. Uē, uē,” Sandborn Ahuna said. “I want to put my feet on the ʻāina no matter how old I am.”

Following the issuance of the intended 665 project leases in Kaʻuluokahaʻi and Kaupeʻa, Watson called for the awarding of an additional 125 alternate leases: clearing the West Oʻahu project lease waitlist.

“This initiative ensures that Native Hawaiian families not only receive land but also have the support and resources to turn it into a thriving homestead,” added Watson. “A house is more than four walls — it’s the foundation for health, education, and economic stability. Mahalo to Governor Green, our lawmakers, and our partners for making today possible.”

Conducted the weekend before Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole Day, Representative Diamond Garcia (House District 42 – Portions of Varona Village, ʻEwa, and Kapolei, Fernandez Village) paid tribute to Prince Kūhiō and the transformative impacts of project lease awards in his speech: “We honor [Prince Kūhiō] by doing the work.”

Project leases provide a critical pathway to homeownership, offering options such as turnkey homes, owner-builder lots, and rent-to-own opportunities. Developers Gentry Homes and Mark Development, Inc. are working alongside DHHL to ensure that affordable, high-quality housing is available to beneficiaries.

Large European and US organizations are prioritizing reindustrialization investments over short-term profitability

    • To mitigate concerns over supply chain pressures, rising tariffs and trade disputes, cumulative investments within and outside of domestic markets projected to reach $4.7 trillion over the next three years, up from $3.4 trillion in 2024
    • More than half have invested in nearshoring or reshoring their manufacturing over the past year, with 35% planning to increase investments in nearshoring in 2025 to diversify their manufacturing
    • Friendshoring, in terms of sourcing and production, is poised to become a key route forward for nearly three quarters of organizations

Paris, March 31, 2025 – The 2025’ edition of the Capgemini Research Institute’s report, The Resurgence of manufacturing: Reindustrialization strategies in Europe and the US’, published today, shows that large organizations across the US and Europe are intensifying their focus on reindustrialization to mitigate concerns over supply chain pressures, rising tariffs and trade disputes. The reconfiguration of global supply chains and manufacturing capacity, including ‘reshoring’ and ‘nearshoring1production, as well as diversification, is being strategically prioritized over short-term profitability. Nearly 60% of executives are determined to continue their efforts despite higher costs and most organizations (65%) are reducing reliance on Chinese products. Instead, they are planning to invest in ‘friendshoring’1over the next three years to de-risk their supply chains.

According to the survey conducted from January 1st to 20th, 2025, market tensions are driving large European and US organizations to accelerate their plans to diversify their manufacturing and supply chains: two thirds have an active or in-progress reindustrialization strategy – up from 59% in 2024.

“After decades of globalization, the imperative to reindustrialize is clear. Organizations are intensifying their efforts to de-risk and diversify their manufacturing and supply chains through friendshoring to reinforce proximity to markets,” said Aiman Ezzat, Chief Executive Officer at Capgemini. “Complexities and costs involved in re-orchestrating supply chains are not being underestimated. Business leaders are investing to navigate the unpredictable macro-environment and drive long-term competitiveness, taking advantage of advanced technologies. In an evolving global landscape, regional collaboration with suppliers, technology providers and policymakers will be key to build a resilient and adaptable manufacturing ecosystem.”

Rising tariffs and strain on supply chains drive reindustrialization
Supply chain resilience, geopolitical concerns, and a desire to be closer to customers emerge as the top drivers of reindustrialization. Supply chain pressure is cited by an overwhelming majority (95%) of executives, a significant increase from 69% in 2024. The desire to be closer to customers is cited for the first time, arriving in second position (92%).

Rising tariffs are further exacerbating supply chain challenges, with 93% of executives expressing concerns about their impact. Reindustrialization is increasingly viewed as a strategic response to the geopolitical environment – notably for battery/energy storage manufacturing, automotive and telecom – with more than half of executives across regions stating that tariffs are accelerating their reshoring and reindustrialization efforts.

Executives acknowledge the complexity and cost of reindustrialization. More than six in ten (62%) expect rising capital costs in the next three years but half foresee reduced logistics and supply chain costs within the same period thanks to greater proximity to customers. In addition, nearly two-thirds still view the domestic skills gap as a major challenge, showing no improvement from 2024.

Nearshore and friendshore manufacturing to surge in the next three years
Over the past year, business leaders across sectors say that they have intensified their strategy to relocate their production and supply chain with more than half (56%) having invested in either nearshoring or combined reshoring and nearshoring of their manufacturing, up from 42% in 2024. This trend is predicted to continue. In the next three years, onshore and nearshore operations are expected to rise to account for 48% (up 7 percentage points) and 24% (up 2 percentage points) respectively, of total manufacturing capacity.

According to the report, ‘friendshoring’ is poised to become a key route forward for most organizations (73%) in terms of sourcing and production. It is expected to account for 41% of total manufacturing capacity in the next three years, up from 37% in 2024. More than eight in ten (82%) executives indicate that they plan to reduce supply chain reliance on China, a significant increase from 58% in 2024. Organizations surveyed have instead targeted reindustrialization destinations in North America, UK, Mexico, Vietnam, India and North Africa.

Advanced technologies to accelerate reindustrialization while driving innovation and reducing costs
Most organizations (62%) are focusing on upgrading manufacturing facilities to make them smart and tech enabled. Over half of them have realized more than 20% cost savings through digital technologies in their reindustrialization efforts and a large majority (84%) plan to invest in advanced manufacturing technologies to further reduce costs.

More than 6 in 10 organizations are looking at critical technologies like data and analytics and AI/Machine Learning to support reindustrialization in the next three years. Organizations are also considering emerging technologies such as Gen AI and 5G & Edge computing; blockchain and digital twins; and quantum technologies.

In addition, nearly three quarters (73%) of organizations foresee that reindustrialization will help catalyze a shift toward sustainable and eco-friendly manufacturing practices, a significant increase from 56% in 2024.

1 In this research, reshoring is defined as bringing manufacturing/production back to the domestic market/country of headquarters. Nearshoring is defined as moving manufacturing/production to a nearby or neighboring country. Friendshoring is a growing trade practice where supply chain networks are focused on countries regarded as political and economic allies, to further reduce risk exposure.

  • MIL-OSI: LIN MCU with Touch Sense Technology for Automotive Applications

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

MILPITAS, Calif., March 31, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Lumissil Microsystems expanded its automotive MCU portfolio with the introduction of the IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978 family of AEC-Q100 general purpose 8-bit MCU featuring an integrated LIN Controller and Physical Layer and Gen 3 touch key controller.

For flexibility, the IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978 integrate 64KB ECC (Error Correction Code) flash memory that can be used to customize GPIO pins and features up to 20 Gen 3 touch sensors with auto wake and sleep modes. The IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978 also feature onboard touch sensors that are reconfigurable from self-capacitance to mutual-capacitance mode. In mutual-capacitance mode, Shield is offered as a feature which provides dust and water immunity and offers proximity detection. Further, the integrated LIN protocol handler is compliant with SAE J2602 LIN 2.0A, LIN 2.1A and LIN 2.2A standards, ensuring seamless communication and interoperability with electrical sub-systems within vehicle’s LIN networks.

To support this claim, Lumissil submitted an MCU with LIN stack to iHR Automotive®, a third-party LIN test house for LIN 2.2 OSI Layer 2 data link layer certification. LIN conformity ensures that a LIN master can transmit 19.2kbps LDF (LIN Definition Frames) to the IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978 and makes certain that the devices process LDF commands as a protocol handler.

To address EMI concerns, the IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978 incorporate oscillators with spread-spectrum modulation which effectively disperses energy at the operating frequency thereby reducing EMI-related radiated noise. To further ease the design, the IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978 were designed to utilize an easy-to-use software calibration GUI which eliminates touch calibration issues and are designed around VS Code, a popular off-the-shelf IDE.

The new IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978 MCU’s enable command-control GPIO applications while simultaneously processing touch key functions. “Automotive engineers can achieve LIN command-control operation while processing touch sensor operations with the IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978,” said Ven Shan, VP of Lumissil Marketing. “Both the IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978 will facilitate the development of complex MCU applications by providing LIN command-control initiated by user interaction.”

The IS32CS8976 and IS32CS8978 feature a built-in LIN Physical Layer LDO capable of 100mA and are available in 3.3V or 5V options. For cost sensitive applications, the IS32CS8976 is available in a TSSOP-24 package offering 16kB flash ECC and 10 GPIO pins while the IS32CS8978 is available in a compact wettable flank WQFN-40 package and features large 64kB flash ECC and 20 GPIO pins. Both devices are RoHS compliant and Pb-Free available with a 2,500 unit per reel MOQ.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Samsung To Launch Bespoke AI Jet Ultra, the Most Powerful Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner in the World

    Source: Samsung

▲ Bespoke AI Jet Ultra in a hallway

Samsung Electronics today announced the global rollout of the Bespoke AI Jet Ultra, the world’s most powerful cordless stick vacuum cleaner,1 which was unveiled at the Welcome to Bespoke AI global event held this month. Featuring the upgraded AI Cleaning Mode 2.0 and advanced HEPA filtration system, this latest innovation builds on Samsung’s leadership in smart home cleaning appliances.

“Samsung has proven its next level innovation in the cordless stick vacuum cleaner segment by launching the most powerful model in the world,” said Jeong Seung Moon, EVP and Head of the R&D Team for Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “Building on the previous achievement of the Bespoke Jet AI, which was the world’s first UL verified AI-powered cordless stick vacuum cleaner,2 we’re confident that this new model will be a true game changer in the global market.”

Clean Thoroughly With the World’s Most Powerful Suction Power
▲ Bespoke AI Jet Ultra in a living room

The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra boasts suction power of up to 400W3 to tackle even the toughest cleaning tasks. The HexaJet Motor is the key component that generates high suction power. Its unique Hexagon stator structure with a second-stage diffuser and an impeller with the reduced thickness improve airflow and increase motor efficiency, thus enabling up to 400W of suction power. Plus, the motor allows the vacuum cleaner to run for up to 100 minutes on one battery when using Min mode,4 so users can clean their whole house in one go.

Intelligent Cleaning Support Through AI Cleaning Mode 2.0
▲ Bespoke AI Jet Ultra in a dress room

The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra also introduces the upgraded AI Cleaning Mode 2.0.5 By sensing the brush load and vacuuming air pressure, this mode can classify a total of six different cleaning environments6 using Samsung’s AI Optimum Tech and automatically adjust the cleaning performance. When using the Active Dual Brush, it can recognize whether a carpet is normal or long-pile. The vacuum cleaner senses corners7 with the Slim LED Brush+, as well. And by adjusting the suction power and brush speed8 for the different cleaning environments, it uses power more efficiently, reducing battery power use by 21% and increasing maneuverability by 8% with performance akin to Mid mode.9

    Advanced HEPA Filtration System
Complementing this powerful and intelligent experience, Samsung has enhanced the filtration system to ensure dust particles are captured when air is expelled from the vacuum cleaner. The Bespoke AI Jet Ultra features a Multi-layered Filtration system that effectively traps fine dust.10 When air comes in, internal compartments like the cyclone and a metal mesh grille filter catch dust particles in succession. As a result, it achieves a filtration efficiency of 99.999%.11

Another distinctive benefit is that Samsung has implemented HEPA filtration into its Multi-layered Filtration system. With this system, the Bespoke AI Jet Ultra captures dust particles as small as 0.3µm, allowing less dust12 to escape into the air.

1 Based on testing by SLG Prüf- und Zertifizierungs GmbH, in accordance with the IEC 62885-4 Cl.5.8 standard, using a handheld type vacuum cleaner (with no brush) in Jet mode. The results were compared to cordless stick vacuum models available on the market with a stated suction power within 30% of the actual suction power of the Samsung model tested by SLG. Based on sales data between January 2024 and December 2024 as compiled by an independent market research institute.2 In May 2023 it was the first cordless stick vacuum cleaner to receive AI certification from UL Solutions, a leading independent safety science organization.3 Based on testing by SLG Prüf- und Zertifizierungs GmbH, in accordance with the IEC 62885-4 Cl.5.8 standard. Measured at the inlet of the non-motorized tool when the dustbin is empty, using Jet Mode and a large capacity battery that is fully charged. Lasts up to 1 min.4 The stated run time applies when using a large capacity battery (3970mAh) and the minimum power level with a non-motorized tool attached. Results may vary depending on actual usage.5 The updated functions of AI Cleaning Mode 2.0 can be activated after registering the stick vacuum cleaner on the SmartThings App. The operation of AI Cleaning Mode 2.0 may be limited in certain environments, such as when the All-in-one Clean Station is unplugged or Wi-Fi connection is unstable or the Bluetooth connection status between the stick vacuum cleaner and the All-in-one Clean Station is unstable. If AI Cleaning mode 2.0 does not work frequently, please move the All-in-one Clean Station to a space without obstacles nearby. To enable continuous function updates, users should keep the Wi-Fi in the house on at all times.6 The ability to identify different cleaning environments and the time it takes to change the settings can be affected by environmental conditions.7 Corner and floor-wall joint detection only operates in hard floor environments. “Corner” refers to the area where two flat and closed walls meet. The suction power increases about 2-3.5 seconds after the brush is pressed against the wall. If the brush contacts only one side of the corner or if there is a gap in the corner, it may not be recognized as a corner, and the recognition accuracy and reaction speed may vary depending on the wall shape and actual usage environment.8 The brush rotation speed (rpm) can only be adjusted when using the Active Dual Brush.9 Based on internal testing when using the Slim LED Brush+, in accordance with the global average ratio of the floor composition – wooden floor 76% and carpet 24%. It achieves the same cleaning performance as Mid mode with 2% or less difference in cleaning efficiency, in accordance with the IEC 62885-2 Cl. 5.1 and 5.4 standard. The battery consumption was measured based on the actual amount of power consumed while using the vacuum cleaner for 35 minutes from a fully charged state. The maneuverability is based on the actual measured value in accordance with the IEC 62885-2 Cl. 7.3.9 standard. Results may vary depending on the actual usage conditions.10 Refers to dust particles in the size range of 0.5 to 4.2µm.11 Based on internal test in accordance with the IEC 62885-2 Cl. 5.11 standard, using Jet Mode. Results may vary depending on actual usage.12 Based on testing by SGS-IBR Laboratories, in accordance with the ASTM F3150 standard, using Jet Mode. Results may vary depending on actual usage. Compared to our non-HEPA filter model. Refers to dust particles with the size of 0.3µm or above.

▲ Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo_SuperSpeed

The Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo is a powerful model that washes and dries clothes completely in a single machine in just 68 minutes2 when using the Super Speed cycle. Its roomy 5.3 cu. ft. Ultra Capacity drum lets users do more laundry in a single load, and its vented design uses the internal heater and fan to move hot air through clothes and vent out moisture, ensuring clothes are always dried quickly and thoroughly. For even more convenience, the Vented Combo can simply swap out the currently installed washer and electric vented dryer.

And with Samsung’s AI Bubble technology, users can enjoy clean clothes, cycle after cycle. Water, air and detergent combine to create a cleansing foam that seeps into fabrics for an effective wash. To tackle tough stains without spending time pretreating them, the Steam Wash cycle comes into action. The drum releases steam to thoroughly saturate every item in the load and ensure an effective deep clean.

    Effortless Operation

“Through our Bespoke AI appliances, Samsung has brought an AI Home to life that not only enhances everyday convenience but also enables energy savings and care,” said Jeong Seung Moon. “We will continue to expand the advanced AI Home to more households, leveraging smart screens, Bixby and Knox security.”

The 2025 Bespoke AI Appliance Lineup
▲ Samsung unveiled the new Bespoke AI appliances for 2025.

During the event, Samsung introduced its Bespoke AI appliances for 2025, which bring new and innovative functionalities to solve users’ difficult problems.

At the heart of the company’s vision is the AI Home display.1 Built upon the innovation of the first introduction of the AI Home display last year, the AI Home with new size options has been expanded to a broad range of new products, such as Bespoke AI Refrigerators, the Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo, Washers and Dryers.2

The 9-inch AI Home screen on the Bespoke AI Refrigerator lineup increases consumers’ options by offering a similar experience to what’s available on the larger AI Family Hub screen. With the upgraded AI Vision Inside,3 food management has been enhanced with new features such as automatic recognition of processed food items,4 for models with the AI Family Hub and those with the AI Home. Through the 7-inch AI Home in the Bespoke AI Laundry, users can intuitively control the washing and drying cycles, as well as monitor and control other connected devices.5

Moreover, the new Bespoke AI appliances bring enhanced features that adapt to consumer needs. For example, the Bespoke AI Hybrid Refrigerator utilizes AI to efficiently cool the inside of the fridge, detecting its current status and predicting internal temperature changes to effectively adapt cooling.

The Bespoke AI Laundry includes new functions to enhance consumer convenience, with new standalone models that have upgraded AI Wash and AI Dry to AI Wash+ and AI Dry+,6 as well as models to be launched in Europe, using up to 55% less energy than class A minimum requirements for the washer.7 Also, Samsung unveiled the new Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo, which is the first ever vented combo in its class.8 It significantly reduces drying time, finishing both washing and drying in 68 minutes with its Super Speed cycle.

Samsung is continuing to innovate its vacuum cleaner lineup, as well. The cordless stick vacuum cleaner, the Bespoke AI Jet Ultra, will be launched with the world’s most powerful9 suction power of up to 400W.10 The upgraded AI Cleaning Mode 2.011 classifies more diverse environments12 like corners13 and the type of carpets14 for improved cleaning performance.

Samsung also revealed the Bespoke AI Jet Bot Steam Ultra.15 Not only is the robot vacuum cleaner designed to climb thresholds, but it is also enhanced with AI Object Recognition for complex environments,16 which can recognize obstacles as small as 1cm, and even transparent liquids17 for better cleaning results. And when it encounters corners or walls, the brush pops out, allowing it to clean areas that can be difficult for typical robot vacuum cleaners to deal with.

Samsung Home Appliances Bring Easy To Use, Care and Saving to Consumers
Samsung elaborated further on its “AI Home” vision and its commitment to integrating AI across the connected experience to cater to diverse lifestyles — through the core benefits of Easy to Use, Care and Saving.

Thanks to the adoption of the AI Home display, users will find it easier than ever to engage with the full functionality of their Bespoke AI appliances. The smart screen is now an even better central control hub, even connecting third party devices through SmartThings without the need for a separate hub device.18 Users can also utilize features like the refrigerators’ Daily Board to receive personalized information and better manage their day — or use Map View to effortlessly monitor and control other connected devices.

The upgraded Bixby allows for easier control of appliances through voice commands and enhances usability through new features like Voice ID.19 It personalizes services by recognizing the user’s voice, automatically switching to the Samsung account of the speaker and showing their calendar on the screen. And if that person also uses the low vision option on their Galaxy smartphone, it will be automatically synced to the screen for a better viewing experience.

New SmartThings services were also introduced during the event, including Family Care,20 which sends an alert to other family members if a user’s movement is not detected at the set time — or if there is no activity for a certain amount of time after the last activity. It is also possible to use the robot vacuum cleaner to look for signs of an emergency, with all of this functionality being tightly secured by Samsung Knox.

Continued Efforts To Deliver Reliable Experiences
To complete its “AI Home” vision for 2025, Samsung shone a light on how it is pushing the boundaries of innovation, prioritizing a trusted experience for users.

First, Samsung will apply enhanced Knox security to devices across the lineup so that users will be able to enjoy their AI Home experience with peace of mind. This year in particular, Trust Chain, which is part of Knox Matrix, is applied to all Wi-Fi enabled appliances launching in 2025. Users can continuously monitor products’ security status in real time through the dashboard.21

Knox Vault is also applied to home appliances for the first time,22 storing particularly sensitive user information, such as passwords and authentication information, in a separate hardware chip to ensure protection. Furthermore, to protect against the potential of future quantum attacks, Samsung’s security is also equipped with post-quantum cryptography (PQC), a part of Knox Matrix Credential Sync, for its screen-applied products.23

Another key priority for Samsung is making sure that customers can use the latest software features on their existing appliances without buying new ones. With Smart Forward,24 the software update service through SmartThings, Samsung continuously updates its appliances with new features to enhance the consumer experience.

Samsung is also actively improving product maintenance. SmartThings Home Care utilizes AI to diagnose each appliance’s status, and if signs of malfunction are detected, it sends a notification in advance. In addition, a technical support representative can provide guidance on remote measures based on pre-diagnosis results.25 This support feature has already expanded to more countries, including France, Netherlands and Canada, following Korea and the United States.

By integrating all of these wide-ranging initiatives, Samsung aims to create safer and more reliable smart home experiences that users can enjoy with comfort and peace of mind.

▲ Samsung DA held a global event to unveil its vision and new products.

1 AI Home display refers to the 7″ or 9″ LCD screen on the product. Does not mean all services available on the AI Home are AI or generate information or outcome using AI. Certain functions accessible through the AI Home utilize AI-based algorithms, which can be updated periodically to improve accuracy. AI-based algorithms may generate incomplete or incorrect information.2 AI Home is available on select models, and its availability may vary by region.3 Available on select T-Type and French Door refrigerator models. • MIL-OSI Economics: Samsung Solves: Tips To Recover From The Clocks Going Forward

    Source: Samsung

Do you find yourself feeling more tired once the clocks spring forward for British Summer Time? Well, you’re not alone. Although losing an hour the night of Daylight Saving Time (DST) may seem insignificant, a study of the sleep patterns of Samsung Health users[1] across the world including 40 European countries reveals disruptions to sleep patterns can be felt weeks later, hitting younger age groups the hardest.

Clock Changes Takes a Toll on Sleep, With Younger Generations Most Disrupted

When looking into how much of an impact the clock change has on people the morning after, one thing is clear: everyone’s sleep patterns are affected. In fact, people fall asleep on average 37 minutes later than the previous night, and wake up 34 minutes earlier. While losing sleep isn’t easy at any age, those in their twenties likely felt it the most, losing half-an-hour more than everyone else thanks to an extremely late bedtime and a seeming inability to sleep in.

Sleep patterns remained inconsistent in the days following the time change as people struggled to return to their regular bedtimes and wake times, and those in their twenties again seemed to be affected the most. Unable to get their sleep patterns under control, this cohort continued to fall sleep more than 20 minutes later than normal, yet woke up only 5 minutes later – missing critical rest. By the third week, sleep patterns for all age groups were still not back to normal, with bedtimes 3 minutes later and wake up times still 14 minutes earlier than average.

Sleep Score – calculated based on an evaluation of a user’s total sleep time, time awake, sleep cycle, plus physical and mental recovery – was at the worst level for weeks after – and again, people in their twenties appeared to be most affected. When looking at the seven-day Sleep Score average, the twenties age group demonstrated the slowest score recovery rate, while older age groups adapted much quicker.

Useful Tips to Help You Recover for a Good Night’s Sleep

The time transition clearly affects the sleep patterns of all age groups long after the clocks change, but for younger generations, prioritising sleep management during this time couldn’t be more important. Sleep is essential for rest and repair of our body, as well as good physical and mental health[2].

In recognition of the clock changes, Sleep scientist and Samsung Wellness Council member, Vanessa Hill, shares useful tips in collaboration with Samsung Health on how to harness technology to understand your sleep patterns and habits for a better night’s rest as the clocks change.

Creating an ideal sleep environment is critical to a good night’s sleep.
Later this month, a Samsung Health app update[3] will make this possible by receiving insights into the key factors that influence sleep quality, including temperature, humidity, air quality and light intensity via a Sleep environment report[4] – leveraging Samsung’s home-based technology and the power of its extensive device ecosystem. With a better understanding of how your environment affects sleep, you can easily optimise your room conditions for an improved night’s rest.

In addition to perfecting your sleep environment, understanding how activity levels can impact sleep quality is key.
Samsung Health updates also bring enhancements to Energy Score, which provides an indicator of how much energy users can expend throughout the day. In addition to sleep and heart rate, a new detailed factor about activity – Activity Balance – will help you understand overall conditions in greater detail by evaluating the consistency of activity levels based on recent data from the past 2 weeks.

It can be helpful to understand how you’re sleeping and then make necessary adjustments through sleep coaching.
Sleep Coaching[5] makes this simple by seamlessly tracking your sleep patterns over 7 days and assigning a sleep animal based on the results. With a personally tailored coaching program, develop healthy habits and routines that set you on a positive path to achieving your sleep goals.

[1] Findings analysed sleep data of Samsung Health users via Galaxy Watch series and Galaxy Ring during DST in the spring of 2024.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Clansmen culture scheme to open

    Source: Hong Kong Information Services

Applications for the Clansmen Culture Promotion Scheme will be accepted from tomorrow to April 30 to provide funding subsidies for clansmen associations to organise activities promoting hometown culture, the Home Affairs Department announced.

The Chief Executive announced in his 2023 Policy Address the launch of the three-year scheme with $30 million earmarked for applications by clansmen associations. The scheme for 2024-25 was launched in April last year and has been successfully completed.

Funding of $10 million is earmarked for the continuation of the scheme for 2025-26, so that clansmen associations can apply for subsidies to organise activities to facilitate patriotic education and promote the spirit of loving the country, Hong Kong and hometowns.

Any locally registered clansmen associations with a good reputation and track record, and with experience in organising relevant activities can apply.

They may use the subsidies to organise activities to promote and preserve hometown culture, unite clansmen in Hong Kong, and facilitate exchanges between the two places.

There is no restriction on the form of the events. As long as the activities are non-profit-making and align with the objectives of the scheme, the associations can make applications under the Scheme.

The funding ceiling for each activity is $200,000 in general.

For enquiries, send an email to the Home Affairs Department.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: English rendering of PM’s speech at the launch of various development works in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh

    Source: Government of India

Posted On: 30 MAR 2025 6:05PM by PIB Delhi

    Bharat Mata Ki Jai!

    Bharat Mata Ki Jai!

    Bharat Mata Ki Jai!

Chhattisgarh Mahtari Ki Jai! (Hail Chhattisgarh!)

Ratanpur Wali Mata Mahamaya Ki Jai!

Karma Maya Ki Jai! Baba Guru Ghasidas Ki Jai!

(Addressing the gathering in local language)

Jai Johar from the bottom of my heart!

Governor of Chhattisgarh, Shri Ramen Deka ji; the popular and dynamic Chief Minister of the state, Shri Vishnudeo Sai ji; my esteemed colleague in the Union Cabinet, Manohar Lal ji; the Member of Parliament from this region and Union Minister, Tokhan Sahu ji; Speaker of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly and my dear friend, Raman Singh ji; Deputy Chief Minister, Vijay Sharma ji; Arun Sahu ji; all the ministers, MPs, and MLAs of the Chhattisgarh Government; and my brothers and sisters who have gathered here from far and wide!

Today marks the beginning of the New Year. It is also the first day of Navratri, and this land is blessed as the abode of Mata Mahamaya. Chhattisgarh is the paternal home of Mata Kaushalya. In this sacred context, these nine days, dedicated to divine feminine energy, hold special significance for Chhattisgarh. I consider myself truly fortunate to be here on the very first day of Navratri. Only a few days ago, a postage stamp was issued in honour of Bhakta Shiromani Mata Karma, and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you on this occasion.

    Friends,

The festival of Navratri will culminate with the grand celebration of Ram Navami, and Chhattisgarh’s devotion to Lord Ram is truly remarkable. Our Ramnami Samaj (a sect) has devoted itself entirely to the divine name of Lord Ram. I extend my warmest wishes to the people of Lord Ram’s maternal land and to all of you, my friends. Jai Shri Ram!

    Friends,

On this auspicious day, with the blessings of Mohbhatta Swayambhu Shivling Mahadev, I have been given the opportunity to further accelerate the development of Chhattisgarh. Just a short while ago, we laid the foundation stone and inaugurated projects worth more than Rs 33,700 crore. These projects encompass housing for the underprivileged, schools, roads, railways, electricity, and gas pipelines—initiatives that will significantly enhance the quality of life for the people of Chhattisgarh. They will also generate new employment opportunities for the youth. My heartfelt congratulations to all of you on these important developmental projects.

    Friends,

In our tradition, providing shelter to someone is considered a great virtue. But what could bring greater joy than the fulfilment of a person’s dream of owning a home? Today, on this auspicious occasion of Navratri and the New Year, three lakh underprivileged families in Chhattisgarh are moving into their new homes. A short while ago, I had the opportunity to meet three beneficiaries, and I could see the immense joy on their faces. One of the women was so overwhelmed with happiness that she could hardly contain her emotions. I extend my heartfelt best wishes to all these families—three lakh families—on this new chapter of their lives. The possibility of a secure roof over the heads of these poor families has become a reality only because of all of you. I say this because you placed your trust in Modi’s guarantee. Under the previous government, the dream of a pucca house for lakhs of families in Chhattisgarh remained buried in files. We had assured you that our government would turn this dream into reality. That is why, as soon as Vishnudeo ji’s government was formed, the very first cabinet decision was to construct 18 lakh houses. Today, three lakh of those homes have been completed. I am particularly pleased that many of these houses have been built in tribal regions. Numerous families from Bastar and Surguja now have pucca houses. One can truly appreciate the significance of this for families whose generations have endured hardship in makeshift huts. For those who may not fully grasp the magnitude of this change, let me put it into perspective. Imagine you are on a long journey by train or bus, standing the entire way because you cannot find a seat. The moment you secure a seat, the relief and joy you feel are immense, aren’t they? Now, imagine families who have spent their entire lives in slums or huts. Today, as they move into pucca houses, their joy knows no bounds. When I see this transformation, it fills me with new energy and strengthens my resolve to work tirelessly for my fellow countrymen.

    Friends,

While the government has provided assistance in constructing these homes, the decision on how each house is built rests with the beneficiaries themselves—not the government. These are the homes of your dreams, and our government does not just build houses; it strives to enrich the lives of those who live in them. Efforts have been made to equip these homes with essential amenities, including toilets, electricity, Ujjwala gas connections, and tap water. I can see that a large number of mothers and sisters are present here today. Most of these pucca houses have been registered in the names of our women. Thousands of sisters have, for the first time, had a property legally registered in their name. My dear mothers and sisters, the happiness on your faces and your heartfelt blessings are my greatest asset.

    Friends,

When such a vast number of houses are built—lakhs of them—it leads to another significant development. Consider this: who constructs these houses? Where do the materials used in their construction come from? These materials are not sourced from Delhi or Mumbai; rather, they come from local markets. The large-scale construction of houses provides employment to our masons, skilled workers such as Rani Mistris (queen/head masons), and labourers in villages. It also benefits local small shopkeepers who supply construction materials. Additionally, those who transport these goods in trucks and other vehicles gain employment opportunities. In this way, the construction of lakhs of homes has not only provided shelter but also generated widespread employment across Chhattisgarh.

    Friends,

The BJP government is steadfastly fulfilling every promise made to the people of Chhattisgarh. The Chief Minister just mentioned that elections for local self-governance institutions were recently held—the three-tier elections—and the overwhelming support you have shown is truly commendable. As I stand before you today, I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for your trust and blessings.

    Friends,

A large number of beneficiaries of various government schemes have gathered here today. You have personally witnessed how swiftly our government is honouring its commitments. We have fulfilled our promise to the women of Chhattisgarh. Paddy farmers have received the bonuses due for two years, and paddy has been procured at an increased Minimum Support Price (MSP). As a result, lakhs of farming families have collectively received thousands of crores of rupees. Under the previous Congress government, recruitment examinations were plagued by widespread corruption. The BJP government has ordered a thorough investigation into these examination scams. Moreover, we are now ensuring that recruitment exams are conducted with complete transparency. These honest efforts have strengthened public confidence in the BJP. Following the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has now triumphed in the civic elections as well, with its flag flying high across Chhattisgarh. The people of this state are wholeheartedly supporting the BJP government’s vision and initiatives.

    Friends,

Chhattisgarh has now completed 25 years as a state, marking its silver jubilee year. Coincidentally, this year also commemorates the centenary of Atal Ji. In honour of his legacy, the Chhattisgarh government is celebrating 2025 as Atal Nirman Varsh. Our commitment is clear—we have built it, and we will make it even better. Every infrastructure project inaugurated or initiated today is a testament to this resolution.

    Friends,

Chhattisgarh was created as a separate state to ensure that the benefits of development reached its people. However, under Congress rule, development remained stagnant, and wherever work was undertaken, corruption followed. The Congress party has never truly cared for your well-being. But we have. We have prioritised your lives, your comfort, and your children’s future. Our government is taking development initiatives to every village in Chhattisgarh. I have noticed a young girl here holding up a painting for quite some time. I request the security personnel to take note of her name and address. Daughter, I will send you a letter. Someone please collect it and ensure it reaches me. Thank you, dear child. Thank you very much. Today, you can see the transformation taking place—good roads are now reaching even the most remote tribal areas. For the first time, trains are connecting new regions, and I have just flagged off a new service here. Electricity is reaching these places for the first time, piped water supply is becoming a reality, and mobile towers are being installed in areas that never had connectivity before. New schools, colleges, and hospitals are being built. Chhattisgarh’s landscape is changing, and with it, its destiny is being rewritten.

    Friends,

Chhattisgarh has now joined the ranks of states where 100% of the railway network operates on electricity—a remarkable achievement. Currently, railway projects worth approximately Rs 40,000 crore are underway in Chhattisgarh. Additionally, this year’s budget has allocated Rs 7,000 crore specifically for the state’s railway infrastructure. These developments will significantly enhance rail connectivity across various regions of Chhattisgarh while also improving links with neighbouring states.

    Friends,

Along with financial resources, good intentions are essential for development. If there is dishonesty in both thought and action—like we witnessed under Congress rule—then even the largest treasury will be drained. We have seen this happen during Congress’s tenure, where corruption and mismanagement prevented development from reaching tribal areas. Take coal as an example—Chhattisgarh is rich in coal reserves, yet the state struggled to get enough electricity to meet its needs. Under Congress rule, the power sector remained neglected, and little effort was made to develop power plants. In contrast, our government is now actively setting up new power plants to ensure a reliable energy supply.

    Friends,

We are also making significant efforts to generate electricity from solar energy. Let me introduce you to a remarkable scheme initiated by Modi—a scheme that will eliminate your electricity bill and even allow you to earn money by generating electricity at home. This initiative is called the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Under this scheme, our government is providing financial assistance of Rs 70,000–80,000 per household for installing solar panels. Here in Chhattisgarh, more than two lakh families have already registered for this scheme. I encourage you all to join as well and reap its benefits.

    Friends,

Another example of good governance and vision is the development of gas pipelines. Chhattisgarh, being a landlocked state, is far from the sea, making gas supply a significant challenge. The previous government failed to invest adequately in gas infrastructure, leaving the state dependent on costly transportation methods. We are now addressing this issue head-on. Our government is actively laying gas pipelines in Chhattisgarh, reducing the reliance on transporting petroleum products by trucks. This will lead to lower prices for fuel and energy-related products. Additionally, the introduction of gas pipelines will enable vehicles to run on CNG, providing a cleaner and more affordable alternative. Moreover, this initiative will bring piped cooking gas directly to homes. Just as water flows to the kitchen through pipes, gas will now be supplied in the same way. We are currently working towards connecting over two lakh homes with direct piped gas supply. Beyond household benefits, the availability of gas will pave the way for new industries in Chhattisgarh. This, in turn, will create thousands of new job opportunities.

    Friends,

In past decades, Congress’s policies fuelled the spread of Naxalism across several states, including Chhattisgarh. Wherever there was scarcity and lack of development, Naxalism took root and flourished. But what did the party that ruled for 60 years do? Instead of addressing the challenges, it simply declared such districts as backward and turned away from its responsibilities. As a result, entire generations of our youth were lost. Many mothers had to endure the heart-wrenching loss of their sons, and countless sisters were left grieving for their brothers.

    Friends,

The indifference shown by those past governments only aggravated the crisis. You have witnessed first-hand how some of the most underprivileged tribal families were left struggling in various districts of Chhattisgarh. The Congress government never cared for them. We did. We ensured that poor tribal families had proper sanitation by launching the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. We prioritised their healthcare needs by introducing Ayushman Bharat Yojana, providing free treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh. We made essential medicines affordable through PM Jan Aushadhi Kendras, where medicines are available at an 80% discount.

    Friends,

Those who claim to be the champions of social justice were the very ones who ignored the tribal community for decades. This is why I say: Modi stands for those whom no one else cares for. We are actively working towards the upliftment of the tribal society through special initiatives. One such programme is the Dharti Aaba Janjati Utkarsh Abhiyan, under which Rs 80,000 crore is being invested in tribal development. This initiative is benefiting nearly 7,000 tribal villages in Chhattisgarh alone. Additionally, we recognise that within the tribal community, there exist extremely backward groups that need special attention. For the first time ever, our government has introduced the PM Janman Yojana, specifically designed for these communities. Under this scheme, development work is underway in more than 2,000 settlements across 18 districts of Chhattisgarh. Nationwide, 5,000 kilometres of roads have been approved in tribal settlements—half of these, approximately 2,500 kilometres, will be constructed in Chhattisgarh itself under the PM Janman Yojana. Moreover, many families present here today have received pucca houses through this scheme. This is the transformation we are bringing—development that reaches every doorstep.

    Friends,

Today, under the double-engine government, Chhattisgarh is witnessing rapid transformation. When a health centre in Sukma district receives a national quality certificate, it instils a sense of confidence. When a health centre in Dantewada resumes operations after years of inactivity, it brings renewed optimism. These efforts are paving the way for a new era of lasting peace in Naxal-affected areas. In December’s Mann Ki Baat broadcast, I spoke about the Bastar Olympics. You may have heard how thousands of young people enthusiastically took part in the event. Their participation is clear proof of the positive change unfolding in Chhattisgarh.

    Friends,

I can see a bright future for the youth of Chhattisgarh. The state’s implementation of the New Education Policy is commendable. Across the country, more than 12,000 modern PM Shri Schools have been established, with approximately 350 located in Chhattisgarh. These institutions will serve as model schools, elevating the entire education system of the state. Additionally, Eklavya Model Schools are already making remarkable progress in Chhattisgarh. Many schools in Naxal-affected areas have also been reopened, providing children with new opportunities for learning. Today, the Vidya Samiksha Kendra has also been launched in Chhattisgarh, marking another significant milestone in the state’s education sector. This initiative will enhance the quality of education, enabling real-time assistance for both teachers and students in classrooms.

    Friends,

We have honoured yet another promise made to you. Under the new National Education Policy, medical and engineering studies have now commenced

In the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland and on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Victory, the Polytechnic will publish a student video blog, “The Memory of Glory Lives.”

Today it is difficult to imagine that the Main Building of the Polytechnic University once housed a military hospital, the windows of the Chemical Building were crosswise sealed with paper tape, and in place of a cozy park alley there was a gaping two-meter shell crater. Hurrying about our business, we pass by monuments, memorial plaques and rarely think about what they symbolize, what they can tell us.

Our university has many places associated with the Great Patriotic War. What events took place here in those distant years? The video blog “Memory of Glory is Alive” and its host, IMMiT SPbPU student Yegor Bredikhin, answer these questions.

In the vlog episodes, he will talk about the university’s memorable locations and the unforgettable stories they have kept for decades.

“This project has become another page in the educational work of the university, which includes our own initiatives, such as “Stories of Polytechnic Families”, and participation in all-Russian events, such as “Scientific Regiment”, – said the head of the Public Relations Department Marianna Dyakova. – In the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory, we decided to make a video project together with students about the places inside the Polytechnic associated with the Great Patriotic War. Students, especially those who are just starting to study, know almost nothing about them. And if they hear from other students the history of the monument, the memorial plaque, it will be perceived with trust and understanding, and will cause reciprocal emotions. We don’t want the project to be didactic, we want to touch the souls and hearts of the Polytechnicians, so that every student who watches the video, passing by such a significant place, stops for a second, thinks about the Great Patriotic War, about the cost of how many lives the victory was achieved.”

The premiere of the first issue dedicated to the Monument to the Fallen Polytechnicians has already taken place. The most famous monument on the Polytechnic campus was opened on September 23, 1967. It was built with funds from teachers, employees, students and graduates of the M. I. Kalinin LPI. Two military helmets lying on the pedestal were found at the battle sites.

Similar to last year’s spring Covid-19 vaccine roll out, those eligible for a vaccine include:

    • adults aged 75 years and over
    • residents in a care home for older adults
    • individuals aged 6 months and over who have a weakened immune system.

Those who turn 75 years old between 1 April and 17 June, 2025 can also have the jab.

Appointments can be booked now via the NHS website, the NHS App or by calling 119, with first appointments available from Tuesday 1 April until Tuesday 17 June.

Sally Roberts, Chief Nursing Officer for the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “The vaccine has been our most effective tool against Covid-19, saving countless lives and helping thousands of people to stay out of hospital.

“However, protection against Covid-19, from either catching the virus or from a previous vaccination, can fade over time and the circulating strain of the virus can change. That’s why if you are at higher risk of severe illness from the virus, it is important that you top up your protection and come forward for a vaccine this spring.

“If you know you’re eligible, you don’t need to wait to be contacted, you can book an appointment via the NHS website, the NHS App or by calling 119 today.”

While having the spring vaccine around 6 months after your last dose is the usual timeframe, eligible people can have it as soon as 3 months after a previous Covid-19 vaccine dose.

If you are eligible, you can get protection from a spring Covid-19 vaccination even if you have not taken up a Covid-19 vaccine offer in the past.
