DAMASCUS, June 21 (Xinhua) — The situation in Syria remains both “fragile and encouraging” amid the continued return of displaced persons, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference in Damascus to mark World Refugee Day during his second visit to Syria this year, he said that since December 2024, some 2 million Syrians have returned to their homes, including both refugees and internally displaced persons.

Grandi told Xinhua that about 1.4-1.5 million internally displaced Syrians have returned to their homes, while another 600,000 or so have returned from neighboring countries, including Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. “Two million is still only a fraction of the total, but it is a significant number,” he said.

Sudan has overtaken Syria in terms of the scale of its displacement crisis, the high commissioner said, with 14 million people displaced from their homes – 10 million to other parts of the country, and another 4 million abroad. “It’s a sad competition,” he said. “But the fact that Syria is no longer in first place points to the possibility of ending the crisis.”

Despite the ongoing return of refugees, Grandi warned of difficult living conditions in Syria and called for increased international support. “Infrastructure, housing, energy, health and education services all need to be restored to ensure that the return of people is sustainable,” he stressed. “I call on the international community to help Syria meet this challenge,” the High Commissioner added. He stressed that the country urgently needs basic services, security and funds for reconstruction. –0–

Renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik marked the 11th International Day of Yoga by crafting a striking sand sculpture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi performing Ustrasana (Camel Pose) at Puri Beach on Saturday.

The sculpture featured this year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” underscoring yoga’s role in promoting both individual well-being and planetary health. Pattnaik’s artwork, known for its intricate designs and vibrant colours, aimed to raise awareness about yoga’s mental and emotional benefits.

Prime Minister Modi led the national celebrations from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, where more than three lakh people joined him in a mass yoga session along the scenic coastline. Indian Navy ships stationed offshore added to the visual grandeur of the event.

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi described yoga as a timeless gift that transcends age and borders, bringing humanity together in “health and harmony.” He praised the Andhra Pradesh government for successfully hosting the event and thanked Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Jana Sena Party leader Pawan Kalyan for their support, calling their leadership “inspiring” and their promotion of yoga “commendable.”

The Prime Minister also recalled India’s initiative in 2014 to propose International Yoga Day at the United Nations—a resolution that gained record global support.

BJP national president J.P. Nadda participated in celebrations in New Delhi, emphasising the deeper meaning of yoga beyond physical exercise. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan joined thousands at the Kishan Mela Ground in Pusa, also in the capital.

Across India and abroad, the day was marked by large-scale participation. In the Himalayas, Indian Army personnel celebrated the occasion at several high-altitude posts. A session at the icy Shahi Kangri Lake in Ladakh—20,000 feet above sea level—stood out for its extreme conditions.

“In a place where every breath is a challenge, soldiers embraced the timeless discipline of yoga—a source of strength, clarity, and resilience,” posted the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army on X.

In London, India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, led a yoga session at The Strand, which drew enthusiastic participation from the Indian diaspora, yoga practitioners, and friends of India.

Now in its 11th year, International Day of Yoga has evolved into a global movement, with events held in over 100 countries and at thousands of locations across India, reaffirming yoga’s growing role in global health and wellness conversations.

  • Let this be the day when inner peace becomes a global policy: PM Modi on IDY 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged the international community to embrace “inner peace” as a “global policy” and make yoga a collective global responsibility.

Speaking at the 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations in Visakhapatnam, the Prime Minister called upon countries to adopt yoga not just as a personal or cultural practice, but as a unifying force for humanity.

“I would like to take this opportunity to urge the global community, on this important occasion, to let this International Yoga Day mark the beginning of Yoga for Humanity. Let this be the day when inner peace becomes a global policy, where yoga is embraced not just as a personal practice but as a powerful tool for global partnership and unity. Let every country and every society make yoga a shared responsibility, a common contribution toward collective well-being,” the Prime Minister said.

The event was held along the scenic Visakhapatnam coastline, with Indian Navy ships stationed near the shore, adding to the grandeur of the celebration.

PM Modi was joined by lakhs of yoga enthusiasts, residents, and dignitaries from Andhra Pradesh.

Calling for a global mass movement through yoga, PM Modi added, “Come, let us all together make yoga a mass movement — a movement that takes the world towards peace, health, and harmony; where every person begins the day with yoga and finds balance in life; where every society is connected to yoga and free from stress; where yoga becomes the medium to bind humanity together; and where ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’ becomes a global resolution.”

At the start of his address, the Prime Minister extended greetings to people across the world on the occasion of International Yoga Day, marking its 11th year of celebration since the United Nations recognized June 21 as the global day for yoga in 2014.

In a message about yoga’s role in connecting humanity with nature and one another, PM Modi said, “Yoga teaches us that we are not isolated individuals — we are an integral part of nature. In the beginning, it helps us take care of our own health and wellness. But gradually, this awareness expands, and we begin to care not only for ourselves but also for our environment, our society, and our planet. Yoga is a system that takes us from ‘Me’ to ‘We’.”

The Prime Minister also praised the efforts of the Andhra Pradesh government and extended special thanks to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan for organizing the event. He called their leadership “inspiring” and described the state’s initiative to promote yoga as “commendable.”

“Yoga is for everyone — beyond boundaries, beyond backgrounds, beyond age or physical ability. It is a universal gift that unites humanity in health, harmony, and consciousness. Friends, I am truly delighted that we are gathered here in Visakhapatnam, a city that beautifully blends nature with progress. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Chandrababu Naidu and Pawan Kalyan for hosting such a wonderful event under your inspiring leadership. It is commendable that the state of Andhra Pradesh has taken this meaningful initiative to promote yoga,” said PM Modi.

The Prime Minister reflected on India’s 2014 proposal at the United Nations to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day, which received record-time support from over 170 countries. He noted that yoga has since grown into a worldwide practice symbolizing peace, balance, and cooperation.

This year’s celebrations saw participation from lakhs of people across states.

  • MIL-OSI China: Muniain leaves San Lorenzo, hints at retirement

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Former Spain international midfielder Iker Muniain raised the prospect of retirement on Friday after parting ways with Argentine club San Lorenzo.

The 32-year-old had been tied to the Buenos Aires club until December but exercised an option to terminate the contract early, citing personal reasons.

“I’m here to announce that I’m leaving San Lorenzo but a little piece of me will stay here forever,” Muniain told a news conference in Buenos Aires, adding that he would need time to think about his future.

“This is the first time I’ve considered quitting playing. There is a good chance that this will happen, and I’ll be giving it some more thought.”

Muniain made 26 appearances across all competitions for San Lorenzo, scoring four goals and providing one assist, after joining the club on a free transfer from Athletic Bilbao last September.

His time in Argentina coincided with an institutional crisis at San Lorenzo, including a corruption scandal engulfing the club’s president, Marcelo Moretti, and financial troubles that delayed player salary payments.

Muniain did not indicate whether the off-field turmoil influenced his decision but insisted he would recall his time at the club fondly.

“I’ve been able to experience nine or 10 truly wonderful months despite all the circumstances and problems that have arisen at times,” said Muniain, who has two Spain caps. “It’s been very special, it’s been very beautiful. It has been worthwhile and the memories will last a lifetime.”

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) — The grandiose Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Conference and Exhibition Complex project in the east China coastal city of Qingdao has recently passed the acceptance test for construction and installation work.

As a key component of the China-SCO Regional Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Zone in Qingdao, the SCO Conference and Exhibition Complex with a 50-meter-high main building began construction in September 2021. Its total construction area is 237,000 square meters.

According to the Qingdao Daily newspaper, a total of 17,000 tons of steel materials were used to build the complex, with the steel truss used in the structure having a maximum weight of 65 tons and a maximum span of 54 meters, which is equal to the total length of two standard basketball courts. Advanced automatic software control technologies, including welding robots, were used in the processing of steel components. At present, 8 new applied technologies and 5 inventions have been patented for the project, the publication says.

The construction of this complex is considered an important step in strengthening the platform construction for the development of international cooperation in the above-mentioned demonstration zone in Qingdao, allowing for the promotion of trade and economic ties with the SCO countries as well as the countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. After commissioning, it will be used to host SCO summits, international conferences and trade and investment fairs, and also function as a business center and be rented out as office space. -0-

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Special Report: Alternative North-South Highway Becomes “Road to Happiness” for Residents Living Along It

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: People’s Republic of China in Russian – People’s Republic of China in Russian –

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

BISHKEK, June 21 (Xinhua) — “When we were children, we thought about how to keep livestock, and now young people are learning from us how to better serve tourists,” said Marat Rysaliev, 54, a resident of Kazarman village in Kyrgyzstan’s Jalal-Abad region. He credited the new road built with Chinese construction workers for the big change.

Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country. Its capital Bishkek in the north and Jalal-Abad and Osh in the south are important economic areas of the country. However, traffic on the old highway connecting the north and south of Kyrgyzstan was inconvenient.

“The road used to be bad, gravel. Accidents often happened on it,” recalls M. Rysaliev. “Heavy-duty vehicles like semi-trailers never came here. And the materials and tools needed for construction could not be brought to us.”

As one of the first countries to support and participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road, Kyrgyzstan has cooperated with China in the construction of the North-South alternative highway. The new transport route, with a total length of 433 km, has brought real conveniences and improved the well-being of local residents, and has given new impetus to the development of areas located along it.

“After the construction of the new highway was completed, it became very convenient for people to get to Jalal-Abad, and now you can get to Issyk-Kul much faster. Large loads can be easily brought,” shared M. Rysaliev, adding that there are more and more tourists in Kazarman, and a significant part of the houses in the village were given to them. And in order to provide guests with better services, local residents are beginning to study foreign languages.

Azamat Mamyrbayev is a restaurant owner in Kazarman. He enthusiastically noted the tangible benefits that the alternative North-South highway has brought to local residents. “Our residents participated in the construction of the highway. They began to receive higher wages, their solvency increased. And my restaurant business took off,” he said.

    A. Mamyrbayev told Xinhua that he really likes driving on the new highway. “I often use this road to travel to Jalal-Abad and Bishkek. The road is very good, standard, and cars have started breaking down less,” he said.

However, the construction of such a road was not easy. The construction work of the first and second stages of the highway was carried out by the China Road company

According to Jin Zhe, due to the difficulties in construction work and the special geographical conditions along the route of the new highway, the builders developed special construction plans. “Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country, so we built a tunnel about 4 km long. The route of the road passes through the Naryn River, the largest waterway in the country. We built two large overpass bridges for this. All this helped accumulate a lot of experience for the implementation of similar large-scale infrastructure projects in mountainous areas in the future,” he added.

As the head of the Toguz-Toro district of the Jalal-Abad region Manas Murataliev stated, the alternative North-South highway is historically significant for the district. Its construction greatly helped improve the quality of life of the population.

“It was difficult for residents of our district to travel to Bishkek. For a long time, communications were poorly developed,” said M. Murataliev. “Now the journey to the capital along the new road takes only 5-6 hours. Previously, it took as much as 8-9 hours and even longer.”

The head of the Toguz-Toro district also emphasized that with the opening of the new highway, local and foreign investors are coming to the district. According to him, this will contribute to the development of tourism and the hotel business of the district.

“It was the Chinese builders who built this unique road through the mountain and with their hard work made a huge contribution to the economic development of our region and Kyrgyzstan as a whole. Our residents are very grateful to them,” added M. Murataliev. –0–

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took part in the 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations, where he hailed yoga as a gift “beyond age” that transcends all boundaries and unites humanity in “health and harmony.”

The event took place against the scenic backdrop of the Visakhapatnam coastline, with Indian Navy ships stationed near the shore, adding to the grandeur of the celebrations.

The Prime Minister praised the efforts of the Andhra Pradesh government and extended his appreciation to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan for hosting the event in Visakhapatnam. He lauded their leadership as “inspiring” and described the state’s initiative to promote yoga as “commendable.”

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, “Yoga is for everyone—beyond boundaries, beyond backgrounds, beyond age or physical ability. It is a universal gift that unites humanity in health, harmony, and consciousness. Friends, I am truly delighted that we are gathered here in Visakhapatnam, a city that beautifully blends nature with progress. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Chandrababu Naidu Garu and Pawan Kalyan for hosting such a wonderful event under your inspiring leadership. It is commendable that the state of Andhra Pradesh has taken this meaningful initiative to promote yoga,”

Over three lakh individuals joined him for a mass yoga session in the coastal city, reinforcing this year’s message that ‘yoga belongs to everyone’ and brings the world together.

The Prime Minister recalled India’s initiative at the United Nations in 2014 to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day, a move that received wide global support in record time.

“I remember when India proposed to the United Nations that June 21st be celebrated as International Yoga Day. Remarkably, in a very short span of time, 175 countries came forward to support this initiative. Such unity and overwhelming global support was truly extraordinary. This was not just about agreeing to a proposal; it was a collective step taken for the betterment of humanity. It reflected a shared vision for a healthier, more conscious world. Today, in 2025, we can proudly see that yoga has become an integral part of many people’s lives across the globe,” the Prime Minister said.

He also highlighted how yoga has reached every corner of the planet and has become a global symbol of health and peace.

“Be it the steps of the Sydney Opera House, the peaks of Everest, or the expanse of the ocean, the message everywhere is the same — Yoga belongs to all and is for all,” the PM added.

Reflecting on the journey over the past decade, PM Modi said the global acceptance of yoga was not just symbolic but a united push for human well-being.

“When I look back at the journey of yoga over the past decade, I remember many things. That day when India proposed in the United Nations that June 21st be recognised as International Yoga Day, and then in the shortest possible time, 175 countries of the world stood with our proposal. Such solidarity, such support is not a common occurrence in today’s world. This was not just support for a proposal; it was a collective effort of the world for the welfare of humanity,” he said.

At the beginning of his address, the Prime Minister extended his greetings to people across the globe.

“Happy International Yoga Day to all the people across the country and the world. Today, for the 11th time, the whole world is doing Yoga together on June 21st. The simple meaning of yoga is to join. And it is wonderful to see how Yoga has connected the whole world,” PM Modi said.

BJP national president JP Nadda also took part in the International Day of Yoga celebrations in New Delhi. He spoke about the deeper meaning of yoga and how it has gone far beyond just being a form of physical exercise.

“Yoga is not merely a physical exercise. For many, it holds a much deeper meaning. It is a path through which we strive to connect with our inner consciousness, often through practices like meditation. The word ‘Yoga’ itself means ‘to unite’ or ‘to sum up,’ symbolising the union of body, mind, and spirit. It is not only a physical discipline but also a profound mental and spiritual practice,” said JP Nadda.

He also praised PM Modi’s role in taking yoga to the global stage through the United Nations.

“In December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared that June 21 will be celebrated as International Yoga Day every year. The proposal put forward by the Honorable Prime Minister was unanimously passed by the United Nations, and International Yoga Day started being celebrated from 2015,” Nadda said.

“I would like to congratulate all of you on the occasion of International Yoga Day. As you know, the proposal to observe an International Day of Yoga was put forward by our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, at the United Nations. With overwhelming support, the UN passed the resolution, and since June 21, 2015, the world has been celebrating International Yoga Day. It has now been 10 years, and we are stepping into the 11th year of this global celebration. Over the past decade, we have witnessed how the world has embraced and accepted yoga as a powerful practice for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being,” he added.

“We all know that the idea of Yoga Day and celebrating Yoga Day all over the world was started by our respected Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji in 2014. In 2014, he said in the United Nations General Assembly that Yoga Day should be celebrated, and more than 170 countries supported it,” the Union Minister said.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan performed yoga at the Kishan Mela Ground in Pusa, New Delhi, joining thousands of participants across the country in marking the occasion.

Iran and Israel exchanged fresh attacks early on Saturday, a day after Tehran said it would not negotiate over its nuclear programme while under threat and Europe tried to keep peace talks alive.
Shortly after 2:30 a.m. in Israel (2330 GMT on Friday), the Israeli military warned of an incoming missile barrage from Iran, triggering air raid sirens across parts of central Israel, including Tel Aviv, as well as in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Interceptions were visible in the sky over Tel Aviv, with explosions echoing across the metropolitan area as Israel’s air defence systems responded.

At the same time, Israel launched a new wave of attacks against missile storage and launch infrastructure sites in Iran, the Israeli military said.
Sirens also sounded in southern Israel, said Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency service. An Israeli military official said Iran had fired five ballistic missiles and that there were no immediate indications of any missile impacts.

There were no initial reports of casualties.

The emergency service released images showing a fire on the roof of a multi-storey residential building in central Israel. Local media reported that the fire was caused by debris from an intercepted missile. Israel began attacking Iran last Friday, saying its longtime enemy was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. Iran, which says its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes, retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Israel.

Israel is widely assumed to possess nuclear weapons. It neither confirms nor denies this.

Its air attacks have killed 639 people in Iran, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, a U.S.-based human rights organisation that tracks Iran. The dead include the military’s top echelon and nuclear scientists.

In Israel, 24 civilians have been killed in Iranian missile attacks, according to authorities.

    TALKS SHOW LITTLE PROGRESS

Iran has repeatedly targeted Tel Aviv, a metropolitan area of around 4 million people and the country’s business and economic hub, where some critical military assets are also located.
Israel said it had struck dozens of military targets on Friday, including missile production sites, a research body it said was involved in nuclear weapons development in Tehran and military facilities in western and central Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said there was no room for negotiations with the U.S. “until Israeli aggression stops”. But he arrived in Geneva on Friday for talks with European foreign ministers at which Europe hopes to establish a path back to diplomacy.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated that he would take as long as two weeks to decide whether the United States should enter the conflict on Israel’s side, enough time “to see whether or not people come to their senses”, he said.

Trump said he was unlikely to press Israel to scale back its airstrikes to allow negotiations to continue.
“I think it’s very hard to make that request right now. If somebody is winning, it’s a little bit harder to do than if somebody is losing, but we’re ready, willing and able, and we’ve been speaking to Iran, and we’ll see what happens,” he said.

The Geneva talks produced little signs of progress, and Trump said he doubted negotiators would be able to secure a ceasefire.
“Iran doesn’t want to speak to Europe. They want to speak to us.

Europe is not going to be able to help in this one,” Trump said.
Hundreds of U.S. citizens have fled Iran since the air war began, according to a U.S. State Department cable seen by Reuters.

Israel’s envoy to the United Nations, Danny Danon, told the Security Council on Friday his country would not stop its attacks “until Iran’s nuclear threat is dismantled”. Iran’s U.N. envoy Amir Saeid Iravani called for Security Council action and said Tehran was alarmed by reports that the U.S. might join the war.

Russia and China demanded immediate de-escalation.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran was ready to discuss limitations on uranium enrichment but that it would reject any proposal that barred it from enriching uranium completely, “especially now under Israel’s strikes”.
