    The City has marked the official handover of Lot 211 Quinns Road, Mindarie for the development of Dunes Beach Resort, an ecotourism style resort with an accommodation, café and event space.

    Mayor Linda Aitken said she was pleased to mark the major milestone and officially hand the site over to Eco Tourism Pty Ltd.

    “The development of the Dunes Beach Resort will generate employment opportunities for our residents, boost the local economy and assist with the development of our City as a sustainable tourism destination,” she said.

    “It will also provide residents with access to a significant area of lawn space, a sit-down café and kiosk area, public bike racks, improved beach access and picnic tables.

    “This site is incredibly important to our residents and I can’t wait to see this project progress as the site is developed into a space that will benefit both the Quinns community and the wider City.

    “I look forward to visiting Dunes Beach Resort in the not-too-distant future.”

    Director Eco Tourism Pty Ltd Russell Percival said he was excited to be moving forward with the project and to be building something for both the local community and tourists to enjoy.

    “After three and a half years, it is great to see our vision and dream start to evolve and we look forward to providing an amazing resort and facilities for everyone to enjoy,” he said.

    “We thank the City of Wanneroo for their help and assistance along the way, and we are very excited that the first version of our Australia-wide concept is starting in Perth.”

    Amarnath Yatra: Over Two Lakh Devotees Offer Prayers, Fresh Batch of 6,143 Leaves for Kashmir

    Over the last 11 days, since it began on July 3, more than two lakh pilgrims have undertaken the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. Another batch of 6,143 pilgrims departed from Jammu for Kashmir on Monday.

    Officials stated, “Another batch of 6,143 Yatris left the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in two escorted convoys for the Valley today. The first escorted convoy of 100 vehicles carrying 2,215 Yatris left at 3:30 a.m. for the Baltal base camp, while the second escorted convoy of 135 vehicles carrying 3,928 Yatris left at 4 a.m. for the Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp.”

    On Sunday, nine yatris sustained injuries when four vehicles in their escorted convoy collided in the Kulgam district on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. The injured were shifted to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital in Anantnag town, where doctors described their condition as stable.

    The Bhumi Pujan of ‘Chhari Mubarak’ (Lord Shiva’s Holy Mace) was performed at Pahalgam on Thursday. The Chhari Mubarak was taken to Pahalgam by a group of sadhus, led by its sole custodian, Mahant Swami Deependra Giri, from its seat at the Dashnami Akhara Building in Srinagar. In Pahalgam, the Chhari Mubarak was taken to the Gauri Shankar temple, where the Bhumi Pujan was held. The Chhari Mubarak will reach the holy cave shrine on August 9, marking the official conclusion of the Yatra.

    Authorities have made extensive multi-tier security arrangements for this year’s Amarnath Yatra. These measures come in the wake of the cowardly attack on April 22, in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them based on their faith in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam.

    An additional 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been brought in to augment the existing strength of the Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and the local police.

    The Army has rolled out ‘Operation SHIVA 2025’, deploying more than 8,500 troops alongside advanced surveillance and combat technology. As part of this extensive deployment, a dedicated counter-UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) grid featuring over 50 C-UAS and EW (Electronic Warfare) systems has been positioned to counter drone-based threats.

    “Live surveillance via UAVs (drones) and PTZ camera feeds is actively monitoring yatra convoys and the holy cave. Engineer task forces have been mobilized for infrastructure tasks like bridge laying, track widening, and landslide mitigation. The operation also includes over 150 doctors and paramedics, two Advanced Dressing Stations, nine Medical Aid Posts, a 100-bed hospital, and 26 oxygen booths backed by 2 lakh litres of oxygen. Signal companies, EME technical detachments, and Bomb Detection & Disposal Squads have also been deployed,” the Army stated.

    All transit camps en route to the two base camps and the entire route from the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu to the cave shrine are secured by security forces.

    This year, the Yatra started on July 3 and will conclude after 38 days on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.

    Yatris approach the holy cave shrine, situated 3,888 meters above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas, from either the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route. Those using the Pahalgam route pass through Chandanwari, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni to reach the cave shrine, covering a distance of 46 km on foot. This trek takes a pilgrim four days to complete. Those using the shorter Baltal route have to trek 14 km to reach the cave shrine and can return to the base camp the same day after performing the Yatra.

    No helicopter services are available to Yatris this year due to security reasons.

    The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolizes the mythical powers of Lord Shiva. The Amarnath Yatra is one of the holiest pilgrimages for Hindu devotees, as legend says Lord Shiva narrated the secrets of eternal life and immortality to Mata Parvati inside this cave.

  • Queues from Midnight: Pilgrims Offer Prayers at Kashi Vishwanath to Mark Start of Sawan

    On the first Monday of the holy month of Shravan, also known as Sawan, a spiritual wave swept across Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi as lakhs of devotees gathered at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple to perform ‘Jalabhishek’ and offer prayers.

    The sacred city of Varanasi echoed with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” as the Mangala Aarti and elaborate floral decorations marked the first Monday of Sawan.

    Devotees began queuing outside the temple late on Sunday night, with many waiting seven to eight hours for the temple doors to open. As the gates opened, the entire city resonated with spiritual fervor, and chants filled the morning air.

    Speaking about the arrangements, Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal said, “We are fully prepared. All senior officers are present on-site. Complete barricading has been done. Devotees are having darshan in a well-managed and systematic manner.”

    To ensure safety and smooth management, a massive security deployment was in place. The police commissionerate had stationed six Quick Response Teams (QRTs), three drone units, mounted police, and tourist police at key locations, including Godowlia Chowk, the Ganga Ghats, and the temple premises.

    As part of the warm welcome, officials greeted pilgrims with a shower of flower petals, creating a deeply moving and sacred atmosphere.

    A devotee expressed their joy, saying, “The arrangements are excellent, and we had a wonderful darshan by the grace of Mahadev.”

    DCP (Crime) Sarvan T. stated, “Today is the first Monday of the holy month of Sawan. Keeping this in mind, an adequate police force has been deployed to ensure the safety and security of the devotees.”

    The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has received enquiries from members of the public about fraudsters forging HKMA documents which claim that an investment company’s assets have been frozen due to regulatory breaches, advising clients to suspend all transactions with the company. The fraudsters also posed as the company to issue a notice, claiming that clients can transfer their assets to a partner institution by paying a service fee.
     
    The HKMA clarifies that the documents purported to be issued by the HKMA are fraudulent, and the company and partner institution as referred to above are not regulated by the HKMA.
     
    The HKMA advises the public to carefully verify documents purported to be issued by the HKMA, or institutions purported to be regulated by the HKMA. If in doubt, they may refer to the Register of Authorized Institutions and Local Representative Offices, the Register of Stored Value Facility Licensees, and the List of Approved Money Brokers available on the HKMA website, or contact the HKMA (enquiry hotline: 2878 8222).
     
    The HKMA has reported the case to the Hong Kong Police Force. Members of the public who suspect that they have become victims of any fraudulent acts should contact the Police or the Commercial Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force at 2860 5012 for follow-up actions and investigation by the Police.

    The Northern Territory Police Force has charged a 19-year-old male in relation to an assault that occurred in Nightcliff on Thursday evening.

    The offender was charged on Friday afternoon with Attempt Sexual Intercourse Without Consent, Gross Indecency, and Aggravated Assault.

    He was remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

    Between 8pm Saturday 12 July and 6am Sunday 13 July an unknown person broke into several businesses on Murray Street and Basedow Road.

    The suspect has been captured on CCTV and police are seeking help from the public to identify them.

    The Northern Territory Police Force is investigating an aggravated assault incident in a community in the Roper Gulf Region on Saturday.

    About 1am, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports of a 35-year-old female being speared through the abdomen throughout a large disturbance.

    The female was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital by Careflight in a stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

    Investigations remain ongoing to understand the circumstances of the incident and identify the alleged offender.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Man Admits the Armed Robbery of Two St. Louis County Stores

    ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis man on Thursday admitted robbing two St. Louis County, Missouri businesses at gunpoint in 2024.

    Stanley E. Alford, 58, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to two counts of robbery and two counts of brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. He admitted robbing a store on Gravois Bluffs Boulevard in Fenton, Missouri on Jan. 24, 2024, and a pawnshop in the 8100 block of Gravois Road in St. Louis County two days later.

    During the first robbery, Alford asked a cashier for change and left when she said she couldn’t open the register. He returned a short time later to return an item that he’d just purchased. When the victim opened the register, Alford pulled a handgun and ordered the cashier to give him the cash drawer. He then made her put the cash in a bag and shoved her head with the barrel of the gun.

    At the pawnshop, Alford browsed jewelry before pulling a handgun. After the employee who was helping Alford ran for her life, he jumped over the counter and stole a tray containing ten gold and diamond rings.

    Surveillance video captured Alford committing both robberies and fleeing in a vehicle registered to him. He was also wearing or had in his possession several stolen rings, and officers found distinctive clothing and other evidence connecting him to the robberies.

    Alford is scheduled to be sentenced on October 14. The robbery charges are punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The brandishing charges carry a penalty of seven years in prison, consecutive to any other charge, meaning Alford faces at least 14 years in prison.

    The St. Louis County Police Department and the FBI investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary Bluestone is prosecuting the case.

    This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

    Three men charged with drug and firearms offences in northern Tasmania

    Three men have been charged with drug and firearms offences following a recent police operation in northern Tasmania.
    Detective Inspector Nathan Johnston said the operation, led by the Northern Drugs and Firearms Unit, had been running since May.
    “The operation, which involved a range of specialist police resources, was brought to a planned resolution on 10 July, when two men were taken into custody at a property in Newnham,” he said.
    “Police located $24,000 in cash at the property, as well as a quantity of methylamphetamine and a luxury vehicle believed to have been stolen from Victoria in March.”
    “Several other searches were conducted in the Launceston area, with a further $140,000 in cash located alongside more methylamphetamine in a storage container linked to one of the men.”
    “A suspected stolen motorcycle was also seized.”
    “Police also located two firearms in another container linked to a third man, who was then taken into custody at the scene.”
    Charges:

    A 32-year-old man was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, dealing with property suspected of being proceeds of crime, motor vehicle stealing and other offences. He was remanded in custody to reappear in the Launceston Magistrates Court at 2.15pm today.
    A 30-year-old man was charged with firearms offences.
    A 45-year-old man was charged with minor drug offences.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: North-South Motorway clear after truck rollover at Dry Creek

    The North-South Motorway has reopened after a semi-trailer rolled at Dry Creek on Sunday evening.

    About 5.15pm on Sunday 13 July, police and emergency services were called to the interchange of the Port River expressway and North-South motorway following reports that a truck carrying flour had rolled.

    The driver, a 26-year-old man from Victoria, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  He has been issued with a 12-month instant loss of licence for dangerous driving.

    The ramp for Port River Expressway eastbound traffic to head southbound on the North-South Motorway was closed until about 10am this morning while the truck was towed and the roadway cleaned.

    The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

    The ACT Government has today welcomed the lifting of restrictions on plasma donations, with gay and bisexual men and transgender women now eligible to donate plasma under new inclusive rules.

    From today, most sexual activity-based deferrals that previously excluded many LGBTIQA+ people from donating plasma will be removed, a milestone moment in the journey toward equity in Australia’s healthcare system.

    Lifeblood has also been progressing changes to blood donation eligibility, with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approving a submission to remove gender-based sexual activity rules for blood and platelets, expected next year.

    Chris Steel MLA, a long-time advocate for blood donation reform, will mark the occasion by donating plasma at the Lifeblood’s Civic Donor Centre.

    “Today we are no longer being treated differently because of who we are or who we love,” Minister Steel said.

    “Like thousands of other Australians, the LGBTIQIA+ community have been ready and willing to roll up our sleeves to safely contribute to the blood supply, and now we can.

    “This is a win for equality, for evidence-based policy, and for public health.

    “I hope these changes encourage everyone who can to consider donating.”

    Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the change comes at a critical time for Australia’s health system.

    “Plasma is the most in-demand blood product in the country, with rising demand for lifesaving treatments across Australia,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.

    “Opening up donation to more Australians not only strengthens the blood and plasma supply, it also sends a strong signal that our donation system is based on safety, science and fairness.”

    “This change reflects the ACT Government’s longstanding commitment to inclusion and health equity, and I commend Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and the Therapeutic Goods Administration for delivering this important reform.”

    Canberra is also leading the way when it comes to plasma donation. On a per capita basis, Canberra’s plasma donors are the most generous in the country, ahead of every other capital city.

    Today’s change means people previously excluded from plasma donation, including gay and bisexual men, sex workers, people on PrEP, and more, can now donate, provided they meet standard eligibility criteria.

    These changes are expected to allow an additional 24,000 Australians to donate and enable 95,000 more plasma donations every year.

  • MIL-OSI Submissions: Hong Kong: Appeal hearing in ‘HK 47’ case a pivotal chance to correct mass injustice – Amnesty International

    Ahead of the appeal hearing of 13 people – among 45 individuals convicted in a mass trial last year of “conspiring to subvert state power” under Hong Kong’s National Security Law – Amnesty International’s China Director Sarah Brooks said:

    “The Hong Kong 47 case stands as one of the most shocking examples of the crackdown on human rights in the city.  This appeal hearing is a chance for the courts to start righting the wrongs of this unprecedented mass prosecution.

    “Research findings we released earlier this month show that the vast majority of convictions under the National Security Law have targeted legitimate expression. It is appalling that Hong Kong courts could condone a crackdown that leaves more than 80% of defendants wrongfully languishing behind bars.

    “This appeal is a pivotal test—not just for these 13 individuals, but for the future of freedom of expression in Hong Kong. Only by overturning these convictions can Hong Kong’s courts begin to restore the city’s global standing as a place where rights are respected and where people are allowed to peacefully express their views without fear of arrest.”

    Background

    In Hong Kong’s largest prosecution under the National Security Law, which was enacted in June 2020, 47 opposition figures were jointly charged with “conspiracy to commit subversion”. Thirty-one of the 47 pleaded guilty to the charge while 16 pleaded not guilty, two of whom were acquitted.

    On 14 July 2025, Hong Kong’s Court of Appeal will hear the appeal of 13 of those convicted. In the same hearing, Hong Kong’s Department of Justice will also appeal against the acquittal of one of the defendants, Lawrence Lau. The hearing is expected to take 10 days to conclude.

    The charges against the “Hong Kong 47” relate to their organization and participation in self-organized “primaries” for the 2020 Legislative Council elections that were ultimately postponed by authorities on Covid-19 grounds before the Chinese government brought in a new electoral system that strictly vetted who could stand for office.

    The city’s chief executive at the time, Carrie Lam, said the “primaries” were illegal and warned that they could be in breach of the National Security Law that had been enacted only weeks earlier.

    To treat self-organized “primaries” conducted by political parties to select candidates to put forward for elections as a genuine threat to Hong Kong’s existence, territorial integrity or political independence does not meet the high threshold of application for “national security” that international human rights standards require.

    Research published last month by Amnesty International, on the fifth anniversary of the National Security Law’s enactment, found that more than 80% of people convicted under the law have been wrongly criminalized and should never have been charged in the first place.

    Hong Kong’s human rights situation has deteriorated dramatically since 2020, with Amnesty International identifying more than 250 people arrested for violating the National Security Law or a colonial-era “sedition” law. Last year, the Hong Kong parliament itself enacted further national security legislation – the so-called ‘Article 23’ law – which has further deepened repression and silenced opposition voices in the city.

    Police are appealing for information from the public following an assault on the Mosgiel motorway off-ramp leading to the Quarry Road roundabout.

    On Wednesday 25 June, Police received a report of a road rage assault at around 4pm.

    One person received moderate injuries and was understandably shaken by the incident.

    While our investigation into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing, Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed what happened. 

    We would also like to hear from anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the motorway and Quarry Road off-ramp area at the time.

    Police are still looking for a driver who stole a car during a break-in at Norwood overnight.

    Police were called to a report of a break-in and car theft from a home on Kensington Road, Norwood about 1.45am on Monday 14 July.

    An intruder broke into the house and stole a handbag, wallet and car keys to the red BMW hatchback parked in the driveway.

    The stolen car’s onboard tracking showed it outside several addresses in Royston Park before it led police across the northern suburbs to Adare Court, Elizabeth East where the car was located, abandoned at 2.45am.

    Police searched the area with the assistance of PolAir and Police Dog Enzo, but the suspect was not located.

    Police found another set of car keys to a Subaru inside the stolen BMW and ask any residents in the Norwood, Royston Park area to check to see if they have also had keys stolen overnight.

    A 27 year old man from Hobart’s northern suburbs has been charged following an alleged evade incident in Hobart’s northern suburbs yesterday.

    The man, who was wanted by police in relation to alleged family violence matters, was safely taken into custody at a Glenorchy petrol station about 2.50pm while he was attempting to refuel.

    Police allege the man, who was riding a motorcycle, had earlier evaded police in Bridgewater and Berriedale.

    No one was injured during the incident.

    President Cyril Ramaphosa has outlined the scope of a judicial commission of inquiry that will focus on investigating “allegations relating to the infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates”.

    The commission will be chaired by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.

    The President made the announcement during an address to the nation on Sunday evening.

    The establishment of the commission is related to serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

    “Among the allegations that the commission may investigate are the facilitation of organised crime; suppression or manipulation of investigations; inducement into criminal actions by law enforcement leadership; commission of any other criminal offences and intimidation, victimisation or targeted removal of whistleblowers or officials resisting criminal influence.

    “The commission will investigate the role of current or former senior officials in certain institutions who may have aided or abetted the alleged criminal activity; failed to act on credible intelligence or internal warnings; or benefited financially or politically from a syndicate’s operations.

    “These institutions are the South African Police Service, National Prosecuting Authority, State Security Agency, the Judiciary and Magistracy, and the metropolitan police departments of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane,” he said.

    Furthermore, the commission will also investigate if any National Executive members “responsible for the criminal justice system, were complicit, aided and abetted, or participated in the acts mentioned above”.

    “The commission will be asked to report on the effectiveness or failure of oversight mechanisms, and the adequacy of current legislation, policies and institutional arrangements in preventing such infiltration. It will make findings and recommendations for criminal prosecutions, disciplinary actions and institutional reform.

    “Once established, the commission shall consider prima facie evidence relating to the involvement of individuals currently employed within law enforcement or intelligence agencies.

    “Where appropriate, the commission must make recommendations on the employment status of such officials, including whether they should be suspended pending the outcome of further investigations,” President Ramaphosa explained.

    The commission will submit interim reports after three and six months.

    “The commission will have the power to refer matters for immediate criminal investigation and urgent decisions on prosecution, taking into account the nature of the allegations and evidence the commission will uncover.

    “It is critical that these matters be attended to with the necessary urgency and thoroughness. 

    “The commission is expected to complete its work and submit a final report to the President. The final report of the commission will be sent to the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chief Justice,” he said.

    The President noted that the commission’s establishment comes as the country is making progress in the rebuilding and strengthening of law enforcement agencies and security services.

    “In recent years, the South African Police Service, the Special Investigating Unit, the Asset Forfeiture Unit and other bodies have been making important inroads in the fight against organised crime and corruption. It is essential that we maintain this momentum and that we intensify this work.

    “We will ensure that the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies continue to function without hindrance as the commission undertakes its work. I call on all members of our law enforcement agencies and security services to remain steadfast in upholding the rule of law and adhering to their code of conduct.

    President Ramaphosa emphasised that the establishment of the commission is a testament to “our commitment to the rule of law, transparency and accountability”.

    “I call on all South Africans to support the commission in its work and, where appropriate, to provide any information or assistance the commission may require.

    “In establishing this commission of inquiry, we are affirming our commitment to the rule of law, transparency and accountability, and to building a South Africa in which all people are safe and secure,” President Cyril Ramaphosa said. – SAnews.gov.za

    President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on leave of absence with immediate effect.

    The President has also announced a judicial commission of inquiry – led by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga – into the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

    The President made the announcements during an address to the nation on Sunday evening.

    During a media briefing last week, Mkhwanazi made several allegations about an alleged criminal syndicate that has “spread its tentacles into law enforcement and intelligence services”.

    Mkhwanazi also made allegations against the Police Minister – alleging that Mchunu colluded with criminal elements to disband the Political Killings Task Team based in KwaZulu-Natal.

    During the address to the nation, the President emphasised that the allegations “call for an urgent and comprehensive investigation”.

    “To address these allegations and the implications of these allegations, I am establishing a judicial commission of Inquiry, chaired by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga. Justice Madlanga will be assisted by Advocate Sesi Baloyi SC and Advocate Sandile Khumalo SC.

    “In order for the Commission to execute its functions effectively, I have decided to put the Minister of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, on a leave of absence with immediate effect. The Minister has undertaken to give his full cooperation to the Commission to enable it to do its work,” President Ramaphosa said.

    Mkhwanazi had also made allegations about the uncovering of a drug cartel, implicating, amongst others, the judiciary, law enforcement, prosecutors and politicians.

    The President said these allegations “raise serious concerns around the Constitution, the rule of law and national security”.

    “These allegations, if proven true, threaten to undermine the confidence of South Africans in the ability of the South African Police Service to protect them and to effectively fight crime and corruption.

    “South Africans are concerned about corruption and the rise of criminality in our country, which manifests itself in the killing of innocent people, gender-based violence, gang violence, kidnappings, construction mafia criminality and many others.

    “As we intensify the fight against crime, it is vital that we safeguard the integrity and credibility of the police and other law enforcement agencies,” President Ramaphosa said.

    With the Police Minister now on a leave of absence, Professor Firoz Cachalia has been appointed as acting Minister  in terms of Section 91(3)(c) of the Constitution.

    “Professor Cachalia is currently a professor of law at the University of the Witwatersrand and is the chairperson of the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council. He previously served as a MEC of Community Safety in Gauteng.

    “Professor Cachalia will be retiring from his current position at the University of Witwatersrand at the end of July. I will appoint an Acting Minister from within Cabinet until Professor Cachalia takes up his post at the beginning of August,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za

    Great North Road, between Portage Road and Larch Road, is cordoned off and emergency services are in attendance.

    There are no reports of injury.

    Police will work with fire investigators to establish the circumstances of the fire.

    Auchi (Agenzia Fides) – An armed attack took place at the “Immaculate Conception” diocesan minor seminary in Ivhianokpodi, Edo State, Nigeria. Three young seminarians were kidnapped by an armed group. A security officer was killed during the assault on the seminary.A statement issued by the Diocese of Auchi stated that the kidnapping took place shortly after 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 10.Bishop Gabriel Dunia, expressing his grief and that of the entire local Church for the death of Nigerian Civil Defense Corps officer Christopher Aweneghieme and the kidnapping of the three young seminarians, requested that the votive Mass of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus be celebrated in all parishes these days to pray for God to enlighten the hearts and minds of the kidnappers.At this time, the Diocese of Auchi stated, no contact has been established with the kidnappers.Police officers investigating the incident described the incident in a statement as a “senseless act of violence against a religious institution and innocent young students,” defining the attack as “not only barbaric, but also a direct attack on public peace and security.”For security reasons, the other seminarians present in the building have been “temporarily transferred to a secure area until security measures around the seminary are strengthened.”The same Seminary was attacked by a group of armed men on October 27, 2024 (see Fides, 29/10/2024). On that occasion, Father Thomas Oyode, Rector of the seminary, was kidnapped and taken into the bush, offering himself as a hostage in place of the two young seminarians whom the bandits were taking.          The Working Group on Patriotic Education (WGPE) under the Constitution and Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee organised a two-day exchange tour to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) on July 12 and 13. Led by the Convenor of the WGPE, Dr Starry Lee, together with members of the Media Publicity Sub-group, Mr Lee Luen-fai and Dr James Li; the Director of Information Services, Mrs Apollonia Liu; and 20 representatives from different media organisations, the delegation visited various enterprises and places in Shenzhen and Dongguan to learn more about the latest developments of the GBA in areas such as innovation and technology and industrialisation, as well as culture and history. 

         The delegation visited the headquarters of DeepRoute.ai in Shenzhen yesterday (July 12) to experience the application of autonomous vehicle technologies. After that, it visited the China State Construction Hailong Technology Company Limited Science and Technology Research Institute to learn about the operation of the Modular Integrated Construction manufacturing bases, which has been applied to the Light Public Housing development at Kai Tak, Hong Kong. The delegation later paid a visit to BYD Company Limited’s headquarters in Shenzhen. 

         Today (July 13), the delegation visited Huawei’s research institute in Songshan Lake, Dongguan, followed by a visit to the Dongjiang-Shenzhen Water Supply Project Memorial Park and its exhibition hall to gain insights into the project’s history and its importance for fresh water supply in Hong Kong. In the afternoon, the delegation explored the Nantou Ancient City Museum and was briefed on the important position of Nantou Ancient City in the Lingnan coastal region, reflecting on the close ties and deep friendship between Hong Kong and Shenzhen as well as the same roots they share. The delegation then visited SmartMore Corporation Limited, which was founded by a Hong Kong entrepreneur, and learned about the company’s developments in artificial intelligence.

         Dr Lee said, “Since its establishment, the WGPE has been dedicated to preserving and promoting patriotism on different fronts. The delegation gained significant rewards through the exchange. By visiting different renowned enterprises and sites in Shenzhen and Dongguan, we observed the rapid development of our country in various areas, fostered a strong sense of national pride, and recognised the close ties between the GBA and Hong Kong, enabling the media to continue to deliver in-depth and accurate information to Hong Kong citizens.     President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a committee tasked with overseeing the transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) from the Ministry of Health to the University of Ghana.

    The inauguration fulfils a key commitment by President Mahama to strengthen the links between the nation’s leading teaching hospital and its premier university.

    Named the Transitional Management Committee, the body is co-chaired by two distinguished Ghanaians: Professor Aaron Lawson, a seasoned academic and former Provost of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana, and Professor Mutawakilu Iddrissu, a Neurosurgeon at the Department of Surgery, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

    The committee has been given a comprehensive mandate to guide the transition process. Its key responsibilities include:

    1. Conducting a comprehensive review of the legal mandates, operational structures, and academic frameworks of both UGMC and the University of Ghana Medical School.
    2. Developing integration guidelines to ensure coherence between UGMC’s clinical mandates and the university’s teaching and research mandates.
    3. Designing a practical roadmap with clear timelines and a communication plan for stakeholders.
    4. Facilitating all necessary legal and administrative processes for the seamless transfer and integration.
    5. Identifying potential challenges, particularly in funding, staffing, and resource allocation, and proposing sustainable solutions.
    6. Establishing a transition secretariat to provide operational and logistical support.
    7. Reviewing expressions of interest for partnership by international health care institutions.
    8. Submitting a comprehensive report to the President of the Republic within three months from the date of inauguration.

    President Mahama emphasised the significance of the committee’s work, urging the members to “work diligently with a sense of historic responsibility,” adding, “You’re laying the foundation for a legacy of health care and medical education excellence. You’re building a bridge between the past and the future.”

    The President described the UGMC as currently “a beacon of excellence, a world-class medical institution with a national mandate.”

    He noted that the Centre “hosts the largest digitised medical simulation and training centre in West Africa,” which has “the potential to provide cutting-edge training for healthcare professionals across the West African sub-region.”

    Built during President Mahama’s first term in office at a cost of $271 million and commissioned before he handed over power, the University of Ghana Medical Centre is a quaternary health facility.

    It provides specialised care in numerous areas, including urology, ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat, cardiology, dermatology, neurology, and interventional radiology for cancers.

    The facility also boasts amenities such as a medical hotel for clients, assisted reproductive technology services for fertility solutions, and a helipad for airlifting emergency cases.

    Police can confirm one person has died following a crash on Telegraph Road, Burnham.

    The crash involving two vehicles was reported at about 3.30pm.

    The Serious Crash Unit is on scene.

    The road is currently closed with diversions in place until the scene examination has been completed.
