  • MIL-OSI Canada: Statement by Prime Minister Carney on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Source: Government of Canada – Prime Minister

“In my first months as Prime Minister, I have been grateful for the opportunity to meet with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, and I recognize there is much more work to do together.

“The government will work in full partnership with Indigenous Peoples – advancing shared priorities such as health care, food security, housing, education, economic prosperity, conservation, climate action, and emergency management to build a better future. Indigenous partnership is a critical component of the One Canadian Economy Act, and shared leadership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis will be pivotal to the success of building major projects in Canada.

“We will move forward together on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls’ Calls for Justice, and the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

“Supporting Indigenous communities, advancing self-determination, implementing treaties, and creating generational wealth and prosperity are central to our commitment to advancing reconciliation. Through initiatives like the Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program, we’re addressing the historical, systemic, and economic barriers that have prevented Indigenous Peoples from participating in – and benefitting from – economic opportunities, particularly in the natural resource sector.

“Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, and every day, we honour the enduring histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, and we reaffirm our partnership in reconciliation. Together, we can build a better future, a stronger economy, and a legacy that future generations can inherit and carry forward.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: TALLAHASSEE BROTHERS BOTH RECEIVE 10-YEARS IN PRISON IN LARGE-SCALE CONSPIRACY TO DISTRIBUTE MARIJUANA

Source: United States Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF)

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – United States Attorney John P. Heekin announces the last of four co-defendants was sentenced today in a large-scale conspiracy that distributed over 1000 kilograms of marijuana in Tallahassee. Tyquan Watson, 28, of Tallahassee, Florida, received 10 years in prison. His half-brother, Cleveland Blackshear, 26, of Tallahassee also received 10 years in prison. Dezaneil Cosby, 28, of Tallahassee received 5 years in prison. Shambresha Turner, 26, of Tallahassee received time-served and supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Heekin said: “I applaud the substantial efforts of our state and federal law enforcement partners to investigate, arrest, and help bring these drug traffickers to justice. These offenses are not victimless crimes; the victims are the members of our community who experience the addiction and violence that too often follows from drug traffickers flooding our streets with this poison. My office will continue to aggressively pursue these cases to keep our communities healthy and safe.”

Trial testimony and evidence demonstrated that Watson was purchasing hundred-pound quantities of marijuana per week from farms and brokers in California and reselling the marijuana in Tallahassee and surrounding areas. Evidence demonstrated that Watson had purchased at least 3169 pounds of marijuana between September 24, 2023, and January 10, 2024, with proceeds of at least $2.4 million during that period.

“With dispensaries and smoke shops becoming more commonplace, people may falsely assume that marijuana is no big deal,” said Deanne L. Reuter, Special Agent in Charge of Drug Enforcement Administration’s Miami Field Division. “I assure you, DEA considers it a big deal. It’s stronger than ever and can pose a serious health risk, especially to children. We will continue to pursue marijuana peddlers with the same verve as any other illicit substance.”

A long-term investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). On August 16, 2022, Shambresha Turner was stopped at the Panama City airport with 40 pounds of marijuana in her suitcases. Turner told officers that she was being paid to transport the suitcases. On October 13, 2022, FDLE conducted a controlled purchase of 28 pounds of marijuana from Cleveland Blackshear. During the surveillance, FDLE agents observed Blackshear obtaining the marijuana from Cosby’s residence immediately prior to the controlled purchase. Both Blackshear and Watson’s fingerprints were identified on packaging material associated with the purchased marijuana. Surveillance of Cosby’s residence between October 12, 2022, and October 28, 2022, revealed multiple people dropping off and picking up suitcases (at least 32 suitcases and 16 garbage bags). On October 28, 2022, DEA executed a federal search warrant at Cosby’s residence and seized 238 pounds of marijuana and a firearm. Watson and Cosby were arrested together on federal arrest warrants on March 11, 2024, at another residence in Tallahassee. During that arrest, law enforcement seized another 183 pounds of marijuana and a firearm.

“This investigation sends a clear message: if you bring drug trafficking and violence into our communities, we’re coming for you,” said FDLE Tallahassee Special Agent in Charge Keith Wilmer. “Our special agents, working side-by-side with the DEA, spent countless hours on covert operations to take down this criminal network. I’m proud of their relentless work to protect Florida’s capital city and hold these offenders accountable.”

Watson and Cosby were convicted at a jury trial on February 14, 2025. Blackshear and Turner had previously pled guilty. As part of his sentence, Watson was also ordered to forfeit $2,424,217 in drug proceeds.

“This case is a clear example of how drug trafficking, even with substances like marijuana, is often linked to greater dangers in our community, including illegal firearms and violent crime,” said Chief Lawrence Revell of the Tallahassee Police Department. “We remain committed to working alongside our federal and state partners to disrupt these criminal networks and protect the safety of our neighborhoods.”

These sentences were the result of a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Tallahassee Police Department, and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorneys James A. McCain and Harley Ferguson prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America (https://www.justice.gov/dag/media/1393746/dl?inline) a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. • MIL-OSI USA: Governor Hochul Appears on Dan Mannarino Show

Source: US State of New York

arlier today, Governor Kathy Hochul was a guest on PIX 11’s “PIX on Politics Daily with Dan Mannarino.”

AUDIO: The Governor’s remarks are available in audio form here.

A rush transcript of the Governor’s remarks is available below:

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11:  I spoke to Governor Kathy Hochul about that and many other topics in a wide ranging interview. The governor is going on the record. And, Governor Hochul is joining me now, great to have you here in person, Governor.

Governor Hochul: Thanks. Great to be back, Dan.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: It’s been a busy week and I want to begin what we saw play out on Tuesday, a city comptroller, Brad Lander, a mayoral candidate, arrested, and he was there escorting this man Edgardo out of his court date trying to get this legal status. When you went down there, what was your encounter with both the ICE officials and Mr. Lander?

Governor Hochul: I went down there, literally had been in Little Haiti, visiting the community, a community that’s under siege. I got the word of what happened and I just declared it as unacceptable in a different word, but I said it was very unacceptable. I went down there, and I went into the federal building, went up to the ninth floor, and they were holding him in this area behind a number of guards. I mean there was ICE agents there, and no one else was around. I just said, “I’m not leaving until Mr. Lander walks out with me.”

And I stood there, and I talked to people, and I brought in my Homeland Security team and others to be reinforcements and to find out what’s going on. Eventually, they went and told him and he said he overheard them saying “the Governor’s here, we’ll let you go.” So I walked out with him, we went down to the street.

He was reacquainted with his wife, Meg, who I had seen on the street and gave her a hug because you don’t know what’s happening. Are they going to press some, made up, trumped up charges, literally trumped up charges or what, but they ended up saying yesterday there were no charges being brought. It’s just to see someone like a Brad Lander, I mean, he knows he’s got attention on his case.

He’s got a Governor coming down there. He’s got all the resources he needs, attorneys, and it just puts a spotlight on all the people who are not an elected official.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: For example, Edgardo.

    Governor Hochul: Yes.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Where is he?

Governor Hochul: We don’t know, I mean, we don’t know and here’s what I called out. It’s so cruel. People are sitting ducks. They came here with legal status, temporary protected status seeking asylum. They came here during the Biden administration. You can agree or disagree with that policy, but they’re here and they’re following the rules. They’re showing up to a court date that they’re told to come for, go before a judge, and while they’re in there their status is revoked. They walk out, and they’re told they’re criminals now, and ICE just grabs them.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: So let me ask you this, is there anything that you or the state can do in a moment like this to protect those who are simply following the law? They get a court date, they show up. The city’s guidance from Mayor Adams has been, go to your court cases, go to school, go to hospitals, and if anybody shows up from ICE, ask for a warrant, which is what Mr. Lander did, and now they’re saying that he didn’t see the warrant.

Governor Hochul: That’s right, that’s exactly right. They’re not even following the rules that are in play here, but we’ve provided legal services and funding, fifty million dollars. I increased it significantly in our budget knowing that this was happening. We have great coalitions, the Immigration Coalition and others that are stepping up and getting the money out to people, training people on what to do–but this is an unprecedented time in American history. It truly, truly is.

When people who are following the rules, following the laws, taking care of people as home healthcare aides. 160 Haitians losing their jobs because who’s going to take care of the moms and dads and the grandma and grandpas who need this care. So they’re not even looking at the impact of the loss of these people who are workers.

The loss to our tax base, the loss to our community, and so I will help every day of the week with criminals. I said that during eight hours of grueling hearing testimony in Congress, which was just a farce to even have to drag governors like myself down there, but we did it, we endured it, put up with a lot of crap.

But we said we do help with law enforcement when we want to remove criminals, people that are dangerous, and this is not what they’re doing. They are removing law abiding people who literally walk on their own into a courthouse.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Let me ask you about that testimony, right you brought it up, you were there for hours and you were grilled by both Democrats and Republicans. I guess the question is have you spoken to President Trump about what you’re talking about going after the worst of the worst. You were pressed on sanctuary city status, but the President had campaigned on going after the worst of the worst. What have those conversations been?

Governor Hochul: No, I had them with him before and I was actually going to reach out again, but he has been distracted with the situation in the Middle East, and so I waited, but I will have that conversation again. I had it in the Oval Office. I had Kristi Noem sitting next to me when I had this conversation. I said, “we, as part of our policies, we’ll help you go after the criminals.” The ones not a crime of crossing the border. That’s not what we’re talking about. That can be enforced civilly.

You do your civil enforcement, that’s not our job. I will help you if you’ve got evidence that someone’s a member of a gang or human trafficking or running drugs or guns. We don’t want them in our streets either. I’ve worked really hard for the last four years to make our streets safer, and we’re seeing the results. So I’m here for that, but why are we being asked to divert our resources to help you do your job, which I don’t even agree with.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: And speaking of resources, we’re seeing what’s going to play out in Los Angeles and California right now with the National Guard being brought in because of these issues of protesters are on the street right, and Mayor Adam said that he sent his deputy mayor and his chief of police, chief of department to meet with President Trump, play golf and persuade him not to send the National Guard here. The Mayor says he spoke to you about that. Were you okay with them meeting on a golf course to talk about this?

Governor Hochul: That’s how they do their business. I’m not going to question it, that’s not my decision, but I’m having the same conversations. I want them to know, first of all, I’m the commander in chief of the New York State National Guard, I am, and there are only extreme cases when the President can usurp that.

Those cases were not called for in Los Angeles. What I’m saying is I believe in our law enforcement, I support them. Our NYPD is 32,000 people strong. They’re some of the best trained in the world, they can handle crowds. So you’re basically saying, the Trump administration is saying, “We don’t trust you law enforcement to do your jobs, so we’re going to kind of bigfoot you and show our force.” It’s unnecessary.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: But can you stop it?

Governor Hochul: I will not be cooperating in that effort. But I will demonstrate that first of all, we can peacefully assemble. That happened, with millions of people, last weekend. Let’s put a spotlight on that and what we don’t want, is to be baited into what Donald Trump wants. He wants nothing more than to see more police cars burning and turned upside down and violence in the streets.

Now, the concentration in Los Angeles was a smaller area. It was exaggerated. Most of the city was just fine, but he wants that in Chicago and New York. He basically said that. So we are ready for it, but no one should take the bait. Don’t take the bait and give him what he wants.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: This is all playing out during a political season here in New York with the mayor’s race, and they’re all using this as part of their campaigns. Now, we just had a poll come out from Marist that shows Andrew Cuomo is upping the polls here. You served as his Lieutenant Governor and you’d potentially have to work with him as mayor. When’s the last time you spoke to Mr. Cuomo?

Governor Hochul: A few months. But I’ll tell you this, the voters will decide. I have such respect for the voters of New York City, that I will work with whomever they want me to, and if it’s mutual, if the next mayor. Or the current mayor — whoever it is — wants to work with me and is willing to, they will see the benefits of what I showed Mayor Adams for four years and changing the whole dynamic between the conflict that was always there between Albany and New York City. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: One of them is Zohran Mamdani — who says that he would need to work with Albany — and you — very closely, and his whole campaign is based on raising taxes, which he says that he can get you to be on board with. Would you be on board with that?

Governor Hochul: No, I’m not raising taxes on people at a time when affordability is the big issue. I’m actually cutting middle class taxes.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Even on the wealthy?

Governor Hochul: I don’t want to lose any more people to go to Palm Beach. We’ve lost enough. We had a major out-migration when Republicans in Congress eliminated the state local tax deduction.

New Yorkers paid $72 billion more to the federal government over the last seven years because Republicans didn’t stand up and they need a full restoration of this. So that was a driver. I don’t want to give anyone else who’s supporting our economy and their taxes are appreciated and their support for the philanthropies, etcetera. Driving them to Florida does not help us. So let’s be smart about this.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: I want to talk about the other race, and that’s the race for governor. Lieutenant Governor, your lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, has announced he’s running against you. What does that mean? Is he tasked with anything right now by you as he now looks to take your job?

Governor Hochul: No, he decided to go in a different direction. But I’m not focused on that at all. I really —

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: But he’s your Lieutenant Governor, so you don’t give him any responsibilities?

Governor Hochul: No, he’s determined to take another course. So he’s basically — he collects his paycheck.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Should he stand down?

Governor Hochul: A lot of people have said that. I will tell you — I will focus on campaigning when the time comes. I’m very competitive. It’s my 16th election. I know how to win, and I will win. But right now, with so much going on, I have to focus on Washington. I have to focus on this big ugly bill, which is going to eviscerate health care institutions everywhere I’ve been visiting.

We just did a billion dollars to help SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, giving central Brooklyn the high quality health care they deserve. And what’s happening at the same time we’re doing this, the federal government stands to take $13.5 billion from our health care systems. I’ve got that fight. I’ve got a fight on tariffs, which are hurting our state tremendously, especially in the North Country and also what’s happening with immigration. So I’m very busy doing my job.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: You’re saying others are calling for him to step down, but you don’t think — you’re not saying it.

    Governor Hochul: I’m not — I don’t really care.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: I want to talk about the big issue right now in terms of the budget, right? Because it is budget season and there’s so much to talk about. But I do want to talk about local issues and what it affects New Yorkers. And come next year, $13.5 million to enact a cell phone ban in schools. And my curiosity is how do you implement that, right? Because on paper, yes, you can say everyone’s — but it’s up to the individual schools to follow through. So how do you make it happen?

Governor Hochul: Oh, we are aggressively working on this to educate all the school districts, educate the parents. Law enforcement plays a role in this too, because they need to persuade the parents that the most dangerous thing, if there is an incident on the school grounds, a shooting, for example, that it’s not safe for their kids to be reaching for their cell phone and videoing it.

So I’m really excited about this when I go around the city, more people have raised this is something they’re really happy we did. We’re the largest state in America to have a full ban morning until nighttime. Your little girl will grow up in a world where she never even knew you could have a cell phone.

And she’ll be smarter and more — have better mental health outcomes because our kids today are under such stress. And as a mom, I’m making sure we’re doing everything we can. This is going to be a game changer.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Yeah. But if a school says, “I don’t want to do it.”

Governor Hochul: No, they have to do it.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: They have to do it.

Governor Hochul: It’s the law. This is why it took me a year to get this done. There’s a lot of opposition. And I said, “We need this done.” Every school has to comply with this. Make sure that parents know how to reach their kids during the day. Just like we did in the old days. We used to call the office and you have to have the phone away from the kids, not in their pockets.

Don’t let them store it where they want. You have to have your own policy. I’m not going to dictate that. But from morning until school day ends, even during lunch and breaks, gym class because they need to start making friends again. They need to be kids again. We’re giving them their childhood back.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Can we bring back snow days?

Governor Hochul: I’m from Buffalo. Don’t tell me about that — we went to school during so many blizzards. They thought it was a sign of weakness if you took a snow day. No, we always went to school during blizzards.

Dan Mannarino, PIX 11: Governor Kathy Hochul, I always appreciate you coming in. Good to see you.

Governor Hochul: Good to see you too, Dan.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Deputy Minister pays tribute to journalist Aserie Ndlovu

    Source: South Africa News Agency

The passing of Aserie Ndlovu has robbed South Africa of an icon who still had much to offer and contribute, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Kenny Morolong said on Saturday.

“The passing of Mr Ndlovu has robbed our nation of an icon, who still had so much to offer and contribute. Primarily, as government, we are saddened not only by his passing, but also the way he was brutally killed.

“We are confident that our criminal justice system will ensure that those who are responsible for their killing get harshest punishment as possible,” said the Deputy Minister.

The Deputy Minister was speaking at the funeral service of the journalist and founder of Capital Live FM, in Mahlabathini, Mpumalanga.

Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli went missing in February this year with police having discovered two lifeless bodies believed to be that of the couple in May.

Law enforcement authorities had been investigating the couple’s disappearance.

The Deputy Minister had previously visited the family as investigations into the couple’s disappearance continued.

“Government calls on all South Africans to join us as we pay tribute to a life well lived.  In this time of great sadness, the thoughts and prayers of the nation are with both families who lost their loved ones.

“We thank the family for opening your doors for us to engage and offer support from the time both Ndlovu and his partner were reported missing up until we learned about their tragic death,” he told mourners attending the service.

He added that Ndlovu made significant contributions to democracy by informing and educating the public through his work.

“Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu has a long-standing good working relationship with [the] GCIS [Government Communication and Information System] and the entire government communications system.

“He collaborated with GCIS and government at large, through a range of activities in his profession as a community media practitioner, ranging from covering government activities such as media briefings, national days, and other key government initiatives.”

Deputy Minister Morolng said the late journalist was passionate about developing future journalists and media entrepreneurs in the local media sphere.

“Mr Ndlovu also used to play a part in using his station working with government to connect other community radio stations in transmitting government messages through various programmes.

“As government, particularly the government communications sector, we feel robbed of one of our own from the Fourth Estate, which is a pillar of our democracy tasked with speaking truth to power,” he explained.

Ndlovu was also described as someone who understood “through his work that information is power and that an informed citizenry is the bedrock of democracy.”

“Aserie, understood that journalism is a bridge between government and citizens,” said the Deputy Minister in his tribute adding that the community journalist also held those in power in the local municipality to account.

“In the age of misinformation and disinformation, community journalists can be guardians of truth and trust using local verified sources. In moments of crisis and disaster, community media practitioners become part of the first responders; providing life -saving local information,” he said.

The Deputy Minister said the void created by the sudden and tragic death of Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli is still hard to grasp.

Earlier this week, a memorial service was held at the GCIS to pay tribute to Ndlovu and Mdhluli.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Advocates – Palestine Forum Condemns Desecration of Palestinian Flag by Destiny Church Supporters

Statement from the Palestine Forum of New Zealand

The Palestine Forum of New Zealand condemns in the strongest terms the disgraceful and provocative act committed by individuals associated with Destiny Church, who tore up a Palestinian flag and stomped on it. This shameful display is not only deeply offensive to the Palestinian people but also to all those who uphold the values of dignity, justice, and the right to national identity.

Such hateful and divisive actions have no place in Aotearoa New Zealand — a country built on principles of diversity, mutual respect, and the protection of all communities’ rights to peaceful expression. The Palestinian flag represents resilience, heritage, and a legitimate struggle for freedom and justice.

We call on community leaders, human rights advocates, faith communities, and all fair-minded New Zealanders to reject this behaviour and stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people against acts of hatred, provocation, and intolerance.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Man facing charges after string of early-morning offences

    Source: New Zealand Police

    Attributable to Inspector Danny Meade:

A 44-year-old man faces a number of charges after crashing a stolen vehicle in Pakuranga this morning following a string of burglaries.

The man is thought to have been responsible for seven reported burglaries, stealing two cars, and getting into three crashes, between around 5:10am and 5:50am today.

It began in Udys Road where Police received a call from someone reporting an unknown man had broken into their house, and a physical confrontation took place. Fortunately there were no injuries, and the man left on foot.

Within minutes, Police received two further separate reports from residents on Udys Road – one reporting a man trying to force entry to her home, and a second reporting their front door being smashed.

Residents of a Pakuranga Road property called Police just after 5:30am, reporting that an unknown man had forced entry into their house armed with a knife. There were no injuries reported, before the man left.

Around 5:40am, Police were made aware of an incident on Grammar School Road, where they had seen a person run off towards their neighbour’s about 10 minutes earlier.

By this stage, a Police dog unit was in the area and had come across the man on a separate Grammar School Road property.

Minutes later, Police received another call from someone reporting the man had kicked in the front door to their house and was smashing items inside.

He stole this person’s car keys and drove off in their vehicle, crashing through a gate and onto Pakuranga Road, then onto Udys Road.

A Police unit was in the vicinity, before the vehicle crashed at the intersection of Udys Road and Reeves Road.

The man has then stolen another car from a property on Reeves Road, which Police pursued for a short time before it crashed at the intersection of Ti Rakau Drive and Tiraumea Drive, causing significant damage to a fence.

The man ran off on foot, before being arrested a short time later.

He will appear in court at a later date.

This criminal illegal alien faces federal charges including attempted murder of a federal officer and assault of a federal officer with infliction of bodily injury

WASHINGTON – Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the arrest of Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, a criminal illegal alien and Tren de Aragua gang member who violently attacked a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agent and an FBI special agent.

“This Venezuelan national is a criminal illegal alien and Tren de Aragua gang member who violently attacked an ICE and FBI agent and has been charged with attempted murder,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Our ICE agents are facing a 500% increase surge in assaults against them. Our brave law enforcement puts their lives on the line every day to arrest terrorists, gang members, and other violent criminals that the previous administration released into American communities. Secretary Noem has been clear: anyone who assaults an ICE law enforcement officer will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

On June 18, ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Omaha led an operation to arrest Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, a known Tren de Aragua terrorist, in Bellevue, Nebraska. As ICE and their law enforcement partners attempted to take him into custody, Hurtado-Cariaco launched a brutal and premeditated assault on an ICE HSI special agent.

During the attack, the illegal alien threw the ICE agent to the ground, slammed her head into the pavement, ripped off her body armor, and made repeated and physical violent contact. The agent sustained serious injuries to her head and arm and was immediately transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for treatment. The agent has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. Hurtado-Cariaco also assaulted an FBI agent during the incident.

Following the attack, Hurtado-Cariaco fled the scene but was apprehended approximately an hour later in the immediate area by ICE and coordinated law enforcement teams.

The Department of Justice charged Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco—an illegal alien from Venezuela—with attempted murder of a federal officer and assault of a federal officer with infliction of bodily injury.

Hurtado-Cariaco entered the U.S. illegally in 2023—and Border Patrol removed him. In 2024—under the Biden administration—he re-entered the U.S. illegally and was released into the country with a notice to appear.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: $13-million investment reopens Boodjamulla National Park (Aboriginal Land)

    Source: Tasmania Police

    Issued: 20 Jun 2025

One of Queensland’s most popular outback national parks will reopen on 4 July 2025, in a major boost for the local tourism industry.

Boodjamulla National Park (Aboriginal Land) was closed following the impacts of an unprecedented flood event in March 2023.

The Boodjamulla Cooperative Management Council (CMC), comprising the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) and the Waanyi Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, has been working hard to re-open the national park.

Principal Ranger Marnie Augusteyn said the Queensland Government had invested almost $13 million to reopen the national park, and the tourism industry is thrilled.

“The funding includes an investment of $6.7 million for repairs and the construction of new visitor infrastructure within the Lawn Hill Gorge section,” Ms Augusteyn said.

“We’re also investing $6.1 million for reconstruction work on water treatment, sewage management, power supply and flood resilience work into our ranger residences.”

Michael Miller CEO Waanyi Native Title Aboriginal Corporation said he was on Country recently to inspect the progress.

“To assist with the staged reopening, Waanyi Elder Everyl Johnny will be based at Boodjamulla gorge to personally welcome visitors on behalf of all Waanyi people to the national park,” Mr Miller said.

“She will provide inductions to visitors, giving insight into Waanyi culture and the impacts of the flooding.

“On behalf of the Waanyi Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, we welcome visitors back to the national park.

“This is our backyard, and please treat it with the same respect that you would your own backyard.

“Please pay attention to restricted access areas for your own safety and pay respect to our culture.”

CEO Tourism Tropical North Queensland Mark Olsen said the Lawn Hill Gorge section of Boodjamulla National Park is an iconic location.

“Reopening Boodjamulla National Park for winter will provide a much needed boost to the northwest and the communities along the Savannah Way that have faced difficult times over past three years,” Mr Olsen said.

“Our great thanks and appreciation to the Waanyi Native Title Corporation, the DETSI team and the QPWS team onsite that have made this possible, it is a huge boost for the region.”

In June 2023, the national park was returned to the Waanyi People. Now dedicated as Boodjamulla National Park (Aboriginal Land), it is the first of its tenure class in Queensland.

200 illegally dumped truck tyres in the Isla Gorge National Park

Up to 200 illegally dumped truck tyres in the Isla Gorge National Park have prompted disgust and sparked a joint investigation to find the person or business responsible.

During a bushfire in October 2024, the tyres were discovered in a deep ravine adjacent to the Leichhardt Highway.

Located approximately 340km west of Bundaberg and 230km southwest of Rockhampton, Isla Gorge National Park features stunning gorges, sandstone outcrops and striking rock formations.

Rangers from the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation and Banana Shire Council compliance officers launched an investigation.

Senior Ranger Chris said the tyres posed a significant fire risk and had polluted a highly sensitive environment.

“This shocking example of illegal dumping has delayed our planned burn program, and we are doing everything we can to remediate the site and find the person or business responsible,” Ranger Chris said.

“We believe someone in the region knows who is responsible for dumping the tyres, and we are asking anyone with information to call us on 1300 130 372 or call the Banana Shire Council on (07) 4992 9500.”

“Due to the remote location and the size of the tyres, rangers from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service were unable to remove them using conventional methods.

“The complex clean-up operation involves a specialist contractor with a 130-tonne crane to remove and recycle the tyres.”

“Visitors to our national parks don’t want to see illegally dumped waste, and that’s why we take a zero-tolerance approach to offenders.

“People involved in illegally dumping waste can receive hefty fines, and they can be ordered to clean up the mess.

Banana Shire Council Mayor Nev Ferrier said the dumping was unacceptable and showed no respect for the region’s natural environment.

“It’s just disgraceful, whoever did this clearly has no regard for the land, our national parks, or the people who care for them,” Mayor Ferrier said.

“The Isla Gorge is one of the most beautiful parts of our region, and to see it treated like this is heartbreaking.

  • MIL-OSI Security: USAID Official and Three Corporate Executives Plead Guilty to Decade-Long Bribery Scheme Involving More Than $550 Million in Contracts; Two Companies Admit Criminal Liability for Bribery Scheme and Securities Fraud

    Source: US FBI

Greenbelt, Maryland – Four men, including a government contracting officer for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and three owners and presidents of companies, have pleaded guilty for their roles in a decade-long bribery scheme involving at least 14 prime contracts worth more than $550 million in U.S. taxpayer dollars.

Roderick Watson, 57, of Woodstock, Maryland, who worked as a USAID contracting officer, pled guilty to bribery of a public official; Walter Barnes, 46, of Potomac, Maryland, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery of a public official and securities fraud; Darryl Britt, 64, of Myakka City, Florida, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery of a public official; and Paul Young, 62, of Columbia, Maryland, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery of a public official.

In addition, Apprio and Vistant, both of which contracted with USAID, have agreed to admit criminal liability and enter into three-year deferred prosecution agreements (DPAs) in connection with criminal informations filed today in the District of Maryland. As part of these resolutions, both Apprio and Vistant admitted to engaging in a conspiracy to commit bribery of a public official and securities fraud. The DPAs entered into with Apprio and Vistant require each company to, among other obligations, provide ongoing cooperation with and disclosures to the Justice Department, implement a compliance and ethics program, and report to Justice Department regarding remediation and implementation of these compliance measures.

“Watson was entrusted to serve the interests of the American people – not his own – and his criminal actions for his own personal gain undermines the integrity of our public institutions,” said Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland. “Public trust is a hallmark of our nation’s values, so corruption within a federal government agency is intolerable. This office, along with our law-enforcement partners, will continue to pursue and prosecute corruption at every level to ensure accountability and protect public trust.”

“The defendants sought to enrich themselves at the expense of the American taxpayers,” said Matthew R. Galeotti, Head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.  “Their scheme violated the public trust by undermining the integrity of the Federal government’s procurement process.  Anybody that cares about good and effective government should be concerned about the waste, fraud, and abuse in government agencies, including USAID.  Those who engage in bribery schemes to exploit the U.S. Small Business Administration’s vital economic programs for small businesses—whether individuals or corporations acting through them—will be held to account.”

“The guilty verdicts reflect the FBI’s unwavering commitment to holding accountable all those who abuse the authority and responsibility of public service,” said Assistant Director Joe Perez of the FBI’s Criminal Division. “The actions of the defendants in this scheme serve to erode public trust. The FBI is focused on rebuilding this trust and protecting American taxpayers from corruption through investigations such as these.”

“Corruption in government programs will not be tolerated. Watson abused his position of trust for personal gain while federal contractors engaged in a pay-to-play scheme,” said USAID OIG Acting Assistant Inspector General for Investigations Sean Bottary. “USAID OIG is firmly committed to rooting out fraud and corruption within U.S. foreign assistance programs. Today’s announcement underscores our unwavering focus on exposing criminal activity, including bribery schemes by those entrusted to faithfully award government contracts. We appreciate our longstanding partnership with the Department of Justice in holding accountable those who defraud American taxpayers.”

“Watson exploited his position at USAID to line his pockets with bribes in exchange for more than $550 million in contracts. While he helped three company owners and presidents bypass the fair bidding process, he was showered with cash and lavish gifts. Through its financial crime investigations, IRS-CI works to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure government funds are awarded based on merit—not corruption. In close coordination with our law enforcement partners, IRS-CI helped put an end to their greed and criminal conduct. Now, Watson and his co-conspirators will face justice,” said Guy Ficco, Chief, IRS Criminal Investigation.

    Overview of Bribery Scheme

According to court documents, beginning in 2013, Watson, while a USAID contracting officer, agreed with Britt to receive bribes in exchange for using Watson’s influence to award contracts to Apprio. As a certified small business under the SBA 8(a) contracting program, which helps socially and economically disadvantaged businesses, Apprio could access lucrative federal contracting opportunities through set-asides and sole-source contracts exclusively available to eligible contractors without a competitive bid process.

Vistant was a subcontractor to Apprio on one of the contracts awarded through Watson’s influence. After Apprio graduated from the SBA 8(a) program and it was no longer eligible to be a prime contractor for new contracts with USAID under this program, the scheme shifted so that Vistant became the prime contractor and Apprio became the subcontractor on USAID contracts awarded through Watson’s influence between 2018 and 2022.

During the scheme, Britt and Barnes paid bribes to Watson that were often concealed by passing them through Young, who was the president of another subcontractor to Apprio and Vistant. Britt and Barnes also regularly funneled bribes to Watson, including cash, laptops, thousands of dollars in tickets to a suite at an NBA game, a country club wedding, downpayments on two residential mortgages, cellular phones, and jobs for relatives. The bribes were also often concealed through electronic bank transfers falsely listing Watson on payroll, incorporated shell companies, and false invoices. Watson is alleged to have received bribes valued at more than approximately $1 million as part of the scheme.

In exchange for the bribe payments, Watson influenced the award of contracts to Apprio and Vistant by manipulating the procurement process at USAID through various means, including recommending their companies to other USAID decisionmakers for non-competitive contract awards, disclosing sensitive procurement information during the competitive bidding process, providing positive performance evaluations to a government agency, and approving decisions on the contracts, such as increased funding and a security clearance.

Apprio and Vistant also agreed to resolve concurrently with the Justice Department in its separate Civil False Claims Act investigations relating to the bribery scheme.

Overview of Vistant Securities Fraud Scheme

According to court documents, in 2022, Barnes and Watson defrauded a licensed small business investment company (SBIC), in furtherance of the bribery scheme, by inducing it into executing a credit agreement with Vistant. Through the credit agreement, Barnes caused Vistant to issue stock warrants that, if exercised, would result in the SBIC having a 40% equity stake in Vistant. The credit agreement also provided for a $14 million loan to Vistant from which Barnes could pay himself a $10 million dividend. Prior to executing the credit agreement, Watson agreed at Barnes’s request to speak with the SBIC about Vistant’s performance as a government contractor on USAID contracts. When speaking with the SBIC, Watson omitted that Barnes had bribed Watson to obtain USAID contracts for years. Watson’s endorsement of Vistant thereafter induced the SBIC to enter into the credit agreement with Barnes.

Overview of Apprio Securities Fraud Scheme

According to court documents, in 2023, Apprio, acting through Britt, engaged in a scheme in which Apprio fraudulently induced a private equity firm, which had an investment pool that was licensed as a SBIC, to purchase from Apprio’s parent company a 20% equity stake in the company for $4 million and simultaneously extend it a $4 million loan secured by shares of Apprio stock. In addition to making false material representations in the stock purchase and loan agreements, Britt intentionally omitted during his negotiations the material fact that he had bribed Watson for years, which was intended to deceive and induce the private equity company into executing the agreements.

Deferred Prosecution Agreements with Apprio and Vistant

The Justice Department reached its resolution with Apprio based on several factors, including Apprio’s credit for clearly accepting responsibility for its criminal conduct, fully cooperating in the investigation and engaging in timely remedial measures. Based on these factors, the criminal penalty calculated under the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines reflects a 10% reduction off the bottom of the applicable Guidelines fine range pursuant to the Criminal Division Corporate Enforcement and Voluntary Self-Disclosure Policy (CEP). According to court documents, Apprio agreed that the appropriate criminal penalty based on the law and facts in its case is $51,673,185; however, Apprio also met its burden of establishing an inability to pay the criminal penalty sought. Based on the Justice Department’s independent analysis, it determined that paying a criminal penalty and civil settlement greater than $500,000 would substantially threaten the continued viability of Apprio. Accordingly, the Justice Department determined that the appropriate resolution of this case is a DPA and a payment of $500,000 in a civil settlement.

Similarly, the Justice Department reached its resolution with Vistant based on a number of factors, including Vistant’s credit for clearly accepting responsibility for its criminal conduct and cooperating with the investigation. Although Vistant’s cooperation was initially delayed and limited, Vistant began to fully cooperate thereafter. Vistant also received credit for engaging in timely remedial measures. Based on these factors, the penalty calculated under the Guidelines reflects a 5% reduction off the bottom of the applicable Guidelines fine range pursuant to the CEP. Vistant agreed that the appropriate criminal penalty based on the law and facts in its case is $86,407,740; however, Vistant also met its burden of establishing an inability to pay the criminal penalty sought. Based on the Justice Department’s independent analysis, it determined that paying a criminal penalty and civil settlement greater than $100,000 would substantially threaten the continued viability of Vistant. Accordingly, the Justice Department determined that the appropriate resolution of this case is a DPA and a payment of $100,000 in a civil settlement.

Watson faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 6.  Young faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 3.  Britt faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison. His sentencing is scheduled for July 28.  Barnes faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 14.

U.S. Attorney Hayes commended the FBI, USAID OIG, and IRS-CI who are investigating this case.

Ms. Hayes also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick D. Kibbe and Trial Attorneys Matt Kahn and Brandon Burkart, Department of Justice, Criminal Division Fraud Section, who are prosecuting the case.

For more information about the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office, its priorities, and resources available to report fraud, visit justice.gov/usao-md  and justice.gov/usao-md/community-outreach.
