Wow, KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2025 in London was a fantastic time! Our Azure Storage team was thrilled to exchange insights and success stories at this vibrant community event. If you missed it, don’t worry! We are here to share what we showed off at the con: how we are enhancing performance, cost-efficiency, and AI capabilities for your workloads on Azure.

Optimize your open-source databases with Azure Disks

Open-source databases such as PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and MySQL are among the most commonly deployed stateful workloads on Kubernetes. For scenarios that demand extremely low latency and high input/output operations per second (IOPS)—such as running these databases for transactional workloads—Azure Container Storage enables you to tap into local ephemeral non-volative memory express (NVMe) drives within your node pool. This provides sub-millisecond latency and up to half a million IOPS, making it a strong fit for performance-critical use cases. In our upcoming v1.3.0 update, we have made significant optimizations specifically for databases.

Compared to the previous v1.2.0 version, you can expect up to a 5 times increase in transactions per second (TPS) for PostgreSQL and MySQL deployments. If you’re looking for the best balance of durability, performance, and cost for storage, Premium SSD v2 disks remains our recommended default for database workloads. Premium SSD v2 offers a flexible pricing model that charges per gigabyte and includes generous baseline IOPS and throughput for free out of the box. You can dynamically scale IOPS and throughput as needed, allowing you to fine-tune performance while optimizing for price-efficiency.

At KubeCon, we demonstrated how developers could readily take advantage of local NVMe and Premium SSD v2 Disks to build their highly available and performant PostgreSQL deployments. If you want to follow along yourself, check out the newly republished PostgreSQL on AKS documentation below!

    Deploy PostgreSQL on AKS

Accelerate your AI workflows with Azure Blob Storage

Building an AI workflow demands scalable storage to host massive amounts of data—whether it’s raw sensor logs, high-resolution images, or multi-terabyte model checkpoints. Azure Blob Storage and BlobFuse2 with the Container Storage Interface (CSI) driver provide a seamless way to store and retrieve this data at scale. With BlobFuse2, you access blob storage just as a persistent volume, treating it like a local file system. With the latest version of Blobfuse2 – 2.4.1, you can:

    • Speed up model training and inference: BlobFuse2’s enhanced streaming support reduces latency for initial and repeated reads. Using BlobFuse2 to load large datasets or fine-tuned model weights directly from blob storage into local NVMe drives on GPU SKUs effectively optimizes the efficiency of your AI workflow.
    • Simplify data preprocessing: AI workflows often require frequent transformations—such as normalizing images or tokenizing text. By using BlobFuse2’s file-based access, data scientists can preprocess and store results directly in blob storage, keeping pipelines efficient.
    • Ensure data integrity at scale: When handling petabytes of streaming data, integrity checks matter. BlobFuse2 now includes improved CRC64 validation for data stored on local disk, ensuring reliable reads and writes, even when working with distributed AI clusters.
    • Parallel access of massive datasets: Implemented parallel downloads and uploads to significantly decrease the time required for accessing large datasets stored in blobs. This enhancement allows for faster data processing and increased efficiency, ensuring optimal utilization of GPU resources and improving training efficiency.

Scale your stateful workloads with Azure Files

Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery/Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, one of the popular stateful workloads, need shared persistent volumes to host artifacts in the repository, where Azure Premium Files is the storage of choice on Azure. These artifacts are stored in small files that incur heavy metadata operations on a file share. To speed up CI/CD workflows, the Azure Files team recently announced the general availability of metadata caching for premium SMB file shares. This new capability reduces metadata latency by up to 50 percent, benefiting metadata-intensive workloads that typically host many small files in a single share. At KubeCon, we showcased how metadata caching can accelerate repetitive build processes on GitHub, refer to the repo and try it out yourself.

For less performance-demanding stateful workloads, Standard Files with the new Provisioned v2 billing model offers better cost predictability and control as shared persistent volumes. The Provisioned v2 model shifts from usage-based to provisioned billing, allowing you to specify required storage, IOPS, and throughput with greater scale. You can now expand your file share from 32 GiB to 256 TiB, 50,000 IOPS, and 5 GiB/sec throughput as your applications demand.

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon was a wonderful opportunity to directly interact with developers and learn from our customers. As always, thanks to our customers and partners for contributing to the event’s value and significance, and we look forward to seeing you again in November for KubeCon North America!

  • MIL-OSI USA: Pocan Asks Speaker Johnson to Invite Elon Musk for a Congressional Briefing

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Mark Pocan (2nd District of Wisconsin)

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Mark Pocan (WI-02) led a letter with 55 of his colleagues urgently requesting Speaker Johnson to facilitate a briefing from Elon Musk for all Members of Congress regarding his role in the Trump administration and his actions as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), including at a minimum details on DOGE’s actions to date, future plans, the authority Mr. Musk believes he has to take such actions, and details on whether or not he intends to adhere to court rulings.

“Since the start of his tenure as head of DOGE, Elon Musk has used his new position to inflict significant damage on the federal government, withholding funds that have already been appropriated by Congress, firing thousands of federal employees, undermining and even attempting to dismantle entire agencies, accessing sensitive taxpayer data, and threatening devastating cuts to services and promised benefits that everyday Americans rely on and have earned,” the Members wrote. “A number of court orders have already ruled these actions to be unlawful, or even likely unconstitutional in the case of USAID.”

“These actions have had a direct impact on people across the country, and our constituents are reaching out in record numbers to express their opposition and outrage over Musk’s role in the federal government and the harm he is causing to their communities,” the Members continued. “Many are also asking for a public contact for DOGE so that they may register their concerns with Mr. Musk and his team directly. Unfortunately, there is no public contact for DOGE, and even Members of Congress are finding it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get any straight answers for our constituents.”

“Therefore, in the interest of communication and transparency, we believe it is critical that Elon Musk come to Congress to provide a briefing and answer any and all questions that Members of Congress have regarding his role in the Trump administration and his actions as the head of DOGE,” the Members concluded.

Wasserman Schultz has led Congressional Democrats in the fight to restore Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Venezuelans, and she’s challenged the Trump Administration’s efforts to deport parole recipients from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Wasserman Schultz also sponsored the legal statute guaranteeing Members of Congress access to detention facilities, and has consistently called out the Trump Administration’s failure to prioritize criminals and neglect of migrant detainees.

Read the final signed letter here or below:

    The Honorable Kristi Noem

    Secretary of Homeland Security

    U.S. Department of Homeland Security

2707 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE

    Washington, D.C. 20528

    Secretary Noem:

We write to express our outrage regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) decision to shut down key oversight offices responsible for ensuring civil rights and humane treatment of migrants in detention. The closure of these offices raises serious questions about DHS’s transparency and compliance with the law, particularly as reports continue to surface detailing inhumane conditions at facilities like Krome Detention Center in Florida. We demand immediate action to restore oversight and halt the immoral mistreatment of detained individuals.

Recent reporting from the Miami Herald indicates that people detained at Krome have faced alarming conditions, including prolonged confinement in unsanitary environments, lack of medical care, overcrowding, and mistreatment by staff. At least three deaths have occurred in ICE custody and several detained men and women and their families have alleged serious abuses. Immigration advocates have called it an “international human rights disaster.” One detainee labeled Krome “a concentration camp.”

Krome is overcrowded far beyond its capacity Advocates have alleged that ICE is underreporting the detained population in public data. As the Administration seeks to unlawfully terminate the legal status of over 1 million TPS and humanitarian parole recipients—all of whom were vetted by DHS upon entry or after applying for protections—conditions will likely worsen.

Rather than acting in response to dozens of complaints, reports, and lawsuits regarding inhumane conditions and civil rights violations at ICE detention facilities, the Administration has opted to cut off personnel and expertise tasked with ensuring medical, hygiene, mental health, and due process standards. On March 21, DHS effectively closed several oversight offices, the USCIS Ombudsman, Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL), and the Immigration Detention Ombudsman (OIDO). This will have impacts far beyond detention: it will cut off avenues for the public to file complaints about DHS policies and practices from airport screenings to

ICE raids against schools, hospitals, and religious centers.

The elimination of oversight mechanisms leaves individuals detained at Krome and around the country without recourse, undermines transparency, and erodes public trust in the Department’s ability to uphold basic human rights and responsibly manage billions of taxpayer dollars. This decision is particularly troubling given previous findings of abuse and neglect in DHS facilities, which underscore the necessity of independent oversight.

DHS has an obligation to ensure that all individuals in its custody are treated with dignity in accordance with the law and that federal spending on private contracts receives appropriate oversight and monitoring. The removal of essential oversight functions—whose activities are mandated by Congress—defies this obligation and places vulnerable populations at even greater risk of abuse. Given these concerns, we request answers to the following questions:

    1.         What was the justification for shutting down oversight offices within DHS that Congress has tasked with ensuring humane conditions and compliance with civil rights laws at DHS detention facilities?

    2.         What specific legal authority has DHS claimed in effectively shutting down internal oversight functions and withholding information from Congress and the public?

    3.         How will funds appropriated by Congress for these offices be utilized going forward?

    4.         What steps, if any, has DHS taken to ensure accountability and oversight in the absence of these offices, particularly in detention contracts with private prison companies?

    5.         How does DHS plan to address the specific issues reported at Krome, including allegations of prolonged solitary confinement, overcrowding, physical abuse, and denial of medical treatment? Have additional medical staff or other personnel been surged to the facility considering reported overcrowding?

    6.         What actions have been taken by DHS or ICE officials to guarantee access to detained persons for their family members and legal counsel?

    7.         Has DHS conducted any internal reviews on the impact of reduced oversight on the conditions within detention centers? If so, what were the findings?

We demand you reverse this decision and provide Congress with a detailed plan for how DHS will restore humane conditions for detained migrants and provide transparency in detention operations. We look forward to your prompt response to these critical questions to ensure that the Trump Administration’s immigration policy does not devolve further into callous cruelty.

    Sincerely,

    ####

UU.: Yassamin Ansari; Nanette Barragán; Suzanne Bonamici; André Carson; Troy Carter; Judy Chu; Yvette Clarke; Jason Crow; Danny Davis; Diana DeGette; Veronica Escobar; Adriano Espaillat; Laura Friedman; Jesús García; Robert Garcia; Daniel Goldman; Pablo Hernández; Jonathan Jackson; Pramila Jayapal; Henry Johnson; Robin Kelly; Ro Khanna; Rick Larsen; George Latimer; Betty McCollum; James McGovern; Grace Meng; Seth Moulton; Eleanor Holmes Norton; Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; Ilhan Omar; Brittany Pettersen; Mark Pocan; Brad Sherman; Marilyn Strickland; Shri Thanedar; Bennie Thompson; Rashida Tlaib; Paul Tonko; Norma Torres; Gabe Vasquez; Marc Veasey; Nydia Velázquez.

2707 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE

    Washington, D.C. 20528

    Secretaria Noem:

    Atentamente,

  • MIL-OSI Global: AI is making elections weird: Lessons from a simulated war-game exercise

Source: The Conversation – Canada – By Robert Marinov, PhD Candidate in Communication, Concordia University

A simulated exercise reveals much about the proliferation and circulation of AI-generated content. (Shutterstock)

On March 8, the Conservative campaign team released a video of Pierre Poilievre on social media that drew unusual questions from some viewers. To many, Poilievre’s French sounded a little too smooth, and his complexion looked a little too perfect. The video had what’s known as an “uncanny valley” effect, causing some to wonder if the Poilievre they were seeing was even real.

Before long, the comments section filled with speculation: was this video AI-generated? Even a Liberal Party video mocking Poilievre’s comments led followers to ask why the Conservatives’ video sounded “so dubbed” and whether it was made with AI.

The ability to discern real from fake is seriously in jeopardy.

Poilievre’s smooth video offers an early answer to an open question: How might generative AI affect our election cycle? Our research team at Concordia University created a simulation to experiment with this question.

From a deepfake Mark Carney to AI-assisted fact-checkers, our preliminary results suggest that generative AI is not quite going to break elections, but it is likely to make them weirder.

A war game, but for elections?

Our simulation continued our past work in developing games to explore the Canadian media system.

Red teaming is a type of exercise that allows organizations to simulate attacks on their critical digital infrastructures and processes. It involves two teams — the attacking red team and the defending blue team. These exercises can help uncover vulnerability points within systems or defences and practice ways of correcting them.

Red-teaming has become a major part of cybersecurity and AI development. Here, developers and organizations stress-test their software and digital systems to understand how hackers or other “bad actors” might try to manipulate or crash them.

    Fraudulent Futures

Our simulation, called Fraudulent Futures, attempted to evaluate AI’s impact on Canada’s political information cycle.

Four days into the ongoing federal election campaign, we ran the first test. A group of ex-journalists, cybersecurity experts and graduate students were pitted against each other to see who could leverage free AI tools best to push their agenda in a simulated social media environment based on our past research.

Hosted on a private Mastodon server securely shielded from public eyes, our two-hour long simulation quickly descended into silence as players played out their different roles on our simulated servers. Some played far-right influencers, others monarchists to make noise or journalists to cover events online. Players and organizers alike learned about generative AI’s capacity to create disinformation, and the difficulties faced by stakeholders trying to combat it.

Players connected to the server through their laptops and familiarized themselves with the dozens of free AI tools at their disposal. Shortly after, we shared an incriminating voice clone of Carney, created with an easily accessible online AI tool.

The Red Team was instructed to amplify the disinformation, while the Blue Team was directed to verify its authenticity and, if they determined it to be fake, mitigate the harm.

The Blue Team began testing the audio through AI detection tools and tried to publicize it was a fake. But for the Red Team, this hardly mattered. Fact-checking posts were quickly drowned out by a constant slew of new memes and fake images of angry Canadian voters denouncing Carney.

Whether the Carney clip was a deepfake or not didn’t really matter. The fact that we couldn’t tell for sure was enough to fuel endless online attacks.

Easily available and free AI tools can be used to generate and promote misinformation at an overwhelming rate.

    Learning from an exercise

Our simulation purposefully exaggerated the information cycle. Yet the experience of trying to disrupt regular electoral processes was highly informative as a research method. Our research team found three major takeaways from the exercise:

    1. Generative AI is easy to use for disruption

Many online AI tools claim to safeguard against generating content on elections and public figures. Despite those safeguards, players noted these tools would still generate political content.

The overall quality of the content produced was easy to distinguish as AI-generated. Yet, one of our players noted how simple it was “to generate and spam as much content as possible in order to muddy the waters on the digital landscape.”

    2. AI detection tools won’t save us

AI detection tools can only go so far. They are rarely conclusive, and they may even take precedence over common sense. Players noted that even when they knew content was fake, they still felt they “needed to find the tool that would give the answer [they] want” to lend credibility to their interventions.

Most telling was how journalists on the Blue Team turned toward faulty detection tools over their own investigative work, a sign that users may be letting AI detection usurp journalistic skill.

With higher-quality content available in real-world situations, there might be a role for specialized AI detection tools in journalistic and election security processes — despite complex challenges — but these tools should not replace other investigative methods.

However, detection tools will likely only contribute to spreading uncertainty because of the lack of standards and confidence in their assessments.

    3. Quality deepfakes are difficult to make

High-quality AI-generated content is achievable and has already caused many online and real-world harms and panics. However, our simulation helped confirm that quality deepfakes are difficult and time-consuming to make.

It is unlikely that the mass availability of generative AI will cause an overwhelming influx of high-quality deceptive content. These types of deepfakes will likely come from more organized, funded and specialized groups engaged in election interference.

Democracy in the age of AI

A major takeaway from our simulation was that the proliferation of AI slop and the stoking of uncertainty and distrust are easy to accomplish at a spam-like scale with freely accessible online tools and little to no prior knowledge or preparation.

Our red-teaming experiment was a first attempt to see how participants might use generative AI in elections. We’ll be working to improve and re-run the simulation to include the broader information cycle, with a particular eye towards better simulating Blue Team co-operation in the hopes of reflecting real-world efforts by journalists, election officials, political parties and others to uphold election integrity.

We anticipate that the Poilievre debate is just the beginning of a long string of incidents to come, where AI distorts our ability to discern the real from the fake. While everyone can play a role in combatting disinformation, hands-on experience and game-based media literacy have proven to be valuable tools. Our simulation proposes a new and engaging way to explore the impacts of AI on our media ecosystem.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Samsung Announces Latest SmartThings Update

    Source: Samsung

Samsung Electronics today announced an update to its global connected living platform, SmartThings — further enhancing the AI Home experience. SmartThings introduces new features and improvements each quarter to deliver a more convenient and seamlessly connected lifestyle for users.

The highlight of this update is the integration of SmartThings with Samsung Health, designed to improve users’ sleep environments while enabling more personalized automation experiences. The update also expands Calm Onboarding to support a wider range of devices and adds compatibility with the Matter 1.4 standard.

“SmartThings’ latest update represents our ongoing efforts to make the smart home more intuitive, connected and personalized,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings at Samsung Electronics. “We’re excited to continue pushing the boundaries of smart home innovation by empowering users though enhanced personalization and automation, including sleep wellness.”

Samsung Newsroom outlines some of the key changes below.

▲ (Left) A sleep environment summary card displayed in Galaxy Now Briefing, (Right) a detailed sleep environment report

▲ (Left) The automation routine setup screen with Samsung TV Plus actions, (Right) a broadcasting feature using SmartThings linked speakers
    * The UI in the above image may differ from the actual app screen or may be subject to change.

Smarter Sleep Environments With Samsung Health Integration
Sleep environment reports1 from Samsung Health on Galaxy devices help users create optimal conditions for rest by providing detailed insights into key factors — such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels and light intensity — through connected devices and sensors. These reports summarize the previous night’s sleep conditions and offer personalized suggestions for improvement.

When paired with a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, the latest update enables SmartThings to automatically adjust the environment based on the user’s actual sleep and wake times.2 For example, routines can be set to turn off lights and the TV at bedtime or to open curtains and play music in the morning.

    Greater Flexibility With SmartThings Routines
With the latest update, SmartThings now supports automation routines based on recurring schedules — weekly, monthly or annual — offering added flexibility for a variety of scenarios. For instance, users can automatically change the color of smart lights to celebrate special occasions like family birthdays.

In addition, SmartThings routines now integrate with Samsung TV Plus on 2025 Samsung TV models. This allows users to include entertainment preferences in their smart home routines — whether it’s setting the TV to turn on the news in the morning or switching to a favorite channel at a preset time to ensure they don’t miss a show.

    Broadcasting via SmartThings-Connected Speakers
A new broadcasting feature allows users to send voice messages across SmartThings-connected speakers, making in-home communication more convenient. For example, if a parent is away and sends a voice message through the SmartThings app — “I’ll be home soon, but have a snack from the fridge if you’re hungry” — it will automatically play on the designated home speaker. With real-time message delivery, families can stay connected no matter where they are.

Expanding Calm Onboarding to More Devices
Samsung has offered the Calm Onboarding3 feature since late 2023, streamlining setup for Samsung home appliances purchased through Samsung.com or official Samsung stores by linking the entire product journey — from order and delivery to connection with the SmartThings app.

In the latest SmartThings update, Samsung is expanding Calm Onboarding beyond its own products to include compatible third-party smart home devices for a more seamless and intuitive connectivity experience. Users who purchase SmartThings-compatible smart home devices directly from Samsung.com will now receive purchase and delivery updates within the SmartThings app. Additionally, users will receive step-by-step onboarding instructions to simplify product setup. The rollout will begin in Korea, with plans to expand to other countries.4

    Matter 1.4 Support
SmartThings continues to advance the IoT landscape by expanding its support for Matter 1.4. The latest version of the standard includes a wide range of energy management devices — such as water heater, heat pump, solar power device, battery storage device, mounted on/off control switch and mounted dimmable load control device. These newly supported device categories build on existing popular device types like lights, thermostats, switches, air conditioners, air purifiers, fans, door locks and more.

By integrating AI-powered routines, broadening device compatibility and adopting the latest Matter standard, SmartThings reinforces its ongoing commitment to innovation — making the connected home more intelligent, energy-efficient and seamless for users and their families.

1 The Sleep environment report feature is available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones running One UI 7.0 or later and Samsung Health version 6.29 or later. Availability may expand in the future. For more information on compatible devices that can measure sleep environments, refer to the Sleep condition report under the “How to Use” section in the SmartThings app.2 Setting routines based on sleep conditions may not be supported in certain countries. This feature is available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones with One UI 7.0 or Samsung Health version 6.29 or later, with plans for future expansion. A connected device capable of detecting sleep and wakefulness — such as Galaxy Watch4/5/6/7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Galaxy Fit3 and Galaxy Ring — is required. For more information, refer to the “Accessories” section in the sleep tab of the Samsung Health app.3 As of April 2025, the Calm Onboarding feature for Samsung products is available in 14 countries including Korea, the United States, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. Further expansion is planned throughout the year.4 This support is planned for countries where the IoT Marketplace, which sells SmartThings compatible smart home devices on Samsung.com, is available. It will be first applied in Korea and gradually expanded to other countries.

  • MIL-OSI USA: RGA Right Direction PAC Launches Five-Figure Digital Campaign in Virginia Gubernatorial Race: The Truth About Abigail Spanberger

    Source: US Republican Governors Association

The following text contains opinion that is not, or not necessarily, that of MIL-OSI –

WASHINGTON, D.C. – RGA Right Direction PAC today launched a five-figure digital ad campaign and website in the Virginia gubernatorial race exposing the truth about Abigail Spanberger’s failed record in congress.

“Abigail Spanberger spent the last six years in Washington, D.C. blindly following the party line regardless of the consequences and it resulted in years of failure that ruined the economy for hardworking American families,” said RGA Rapid Response Director Kollin Crompton. “Spanberger voted for higher costs, less parental involvement in schools, and less individual freedom at every opportunity she had. Now Spanberger wants to bring that failed agenda to Virginia.”

View the site and video here.

Read more about Spanberger’s failed agenda:

    Opposes Securing the Border

    • Spanberger opposed commonsense immigration policies to keep drugs and criminals out of the United States, and opposes securing the border, and supports localities declaring themselves as sanctuary cities.
    • Spanberger voted against the Laken Riley Act.
    • Spanberger voted to allow federal funding for sanctuary cities and she voted to let schools turn their facilities into sanctuaries for illegal immigrants.

Supporting Higher Taxes and Failed Policies that Drove Up the Cost of Living

    • Spanberger was in lockstep with Joe Biden’s reckless, failed spending agenda that caused the skyrocketing costs Virginia families are still recovering from today.
    • Even worse, Spanberger opposed the 2017 middle-class tax cuts that gave hardworking American families nearly an extra $2,000 a year. She even said putting money back in Americans’ pockets was “irresponsible.”

Putting Politics Over Children and Parents

    • Spanberger voted AGAINST the Parents Bill of Rights Act, which empowered parents to have a voice in their kids’ education and provided necessary transparency within school districts.
    • Spanberger supports allowing dangerous, irreversible gender transition surgery for children.
    • Spanberger supports schools being able to hide a child’s gender identity from their parents.
    • Spanberger voted to allow biological men to compete in girls’ sports — putting girls’ safety and fairness at risk.
    • Abigail Spanberger twice voted against banning military-operated pre-K-12 schools from including pornographic and radical gender ideology books in their libraries.

  • MIL-OSI: Atsign’s NoPorts Delivers MQTT Security Through Invisibility, Eliminating Open Port Vulnerabilities

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Atsign, the developer of the innovative NoPorts technology, announces NoPorts now makes MQTT broker, gateways, and subscriber devices secure through invisibility by completely eliminating network attack surfaces. Using NoPorts to create an “invisible” MQTT infrastructure virtually eliminates external threats improving overall IoT security.

MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport), while efficient for IoT messaging, traditionally relies on open ports, creating inherent security risks. Atsign’s NoPorts technology addresses this by establishing secure, peer-to-peer connections without requiring any open inbound ports on any devices. Without open ports, there is nothing for bad actors to find when they scan for vulnerabilities. This “invisibility” provides enhanced protection against unauthorized access and data breaches.

“The reliance on open ports in traditional MQTT deployments presents a security challenge,” stated Colin Constable, CTO at Atsign. “NoPorts addresses this by removing the need for these ports, rendering the MQTT infrastructure effectively invisible to external scans. This ensures that brokers and subscribers are better protected from external threats, providing a more robust defense against unauthorized access and data breaches.”

Additional Advantages of Using NoPorts for Invisible MQTT

Along with making MQTT more secure, NoPorts offers IoT installations several additional advantages:

    • Expedited Deployment: Streamlines IoT deployments by reducing the complexities of port forwarding and firewall configurations.
    • Enhanced Security with Zero Trust Architecture: Aligns with zero trust security principles, ensuring all connections between broker, gateways, and subscriber devices are authenticated and authorized, regardless of network location.
    • Simplified Management with Key Automation: Eliminates the need to manage certificates on all devices by enabling them to cut their own cryptographic keys.

    How NoPorts Creates Invisible MQTT

Atsign’s NoPorts technology establishes direct, secure connections between MQTT clients and brokers using the Zero Trust architecture of the atPlatform. This eliminates the need for open ports, making the communication less visible to external scanners and attackers. Furthermore, all data transmitted through the NoPorts connection is automatically end-to-end encrypted, ensuring data confidentiality.

As shown in demonstrations, Atsign’s NoPorts technology allows MQTT communications to occur across disparate networks, even when devices are behind restrictive firewalls or NATs. This capability is useful for IoT deployments in challenging network environments.

“Atsign’s NoPorts provides a valuable solution for creating invisible MQTT deployments, enhancing overall security,” said Gareth Owen, CRO at Atsign. “By combining the efficiency of MQTT with the robust security of NoPorts, we offer a solution that addresses the critical security considerations facing IoT today.”

Atsign is dedicated to providing solutions that enhance security and simplify connectivity for people, entities, and things, including IoT and Ai. NoPorts compatibility with MQTT is a significant advancement in securing IoT communications.

    About NoPorts

NoPorts eliminates network & security vulnerabilities by securing connections between people, entities, and things making them invisible to would-be attackers by eliminating attack network surfaces. Built on Atsign’s atPlatform, NoPorts provides a zero trust architecture, end-to-end encryption, and no reliance on cumbersome security layers, enabling seamless and secure communication across virtually any environment. Organizations gain scalability, operational efficiency, and stronger security—all while reducing costs and complexity. For more information, visit NoPorts.com.

    About Atsign

At Atsign, we believe that people, entities, and things—including AI—should connect securely and directly, while always being invisible to bad actors. By eliminating the need for open ports and centralized servers, the atPlatform empowers developers and organizations to build applications with “invisible” security built in, placing data and device control back into the hands of their owners. Atsign is the creator of the atPlatform, the most robust infrastructure available for “invisible networking” and secure, private, peer-to-peer connectivity. Learn more at Atsign.com.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Why Nato is struggling to rebuild itself in an increasingly threatening world

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Amelia Hadfield, Head of Department of Politics, University of Surrey

In the years after Nato was formed in 1949, its US and European members had a collective approach to defence with clear goals in common, largely built around the protection of western Europe against the Soviet Union. Throughout this era, the US and Europe both relied on the stability of the international system by creating international cooperation on shared dilemmas.

Fast forward more than 70 years, and there is now a ticking clock on reinventing the transatlantic alliance.

European security and US-led Nato security are no longer one and the same. Certainly, recent statements from US leaders that the US will prioritise empowering Europe to own responsibility for its own security has made for tough listening in Europe.

For some, this may be an overdue opportunity to fundamentally rework the transatlantic security relationship. For others, such statements are worryingly set against the backdrop of Trump’s pro-Russia stance, with Trump’s demands sounding sinister at best.

Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte recently outlined a need to “build a stronger, a fairer and more lethal NATO”. Global threats were creating a more dangerous world, he argued.

Mark Rutte, Nato’s secretary-general, speaks at a 2025 meeting in Brussels,

From its establishment by 12 states on April 4, 1949, until the end of the cold war era, Nato was focused on one big thing: deterring Soviet aggression. Ultimately, Nato had one job, one enemy, one threat, one theatre and one instrument of power.

It was a partnership that enabled the US to build and maintain a more permanent role in European security. This collective security plan prevented the US from falling back into isolationist foreign policies that it had held before the second world war

Arguably, US attitudes fluctuated throughout this era. Initially the country sought a temporary role in Nato, with limited military commitment. It also encouraged western European Nato members to take early and primary responsibility for defence.

However, the huge Soviet nuclear threat hardened US attitudes. And Nato came to be seen as key to the US’s overall ability to prevent a Soviet invasion of western Europe. Equally important was the role of the Marshall Plan, a massive post-war reconstruction plan for Europe, which (in conjunction with Nato) represented the US’s desire to work with European partners to both stabilise the region, and ensure democracy.

Through the decades that followed, the US saw Nato as a cornerstone of its foreign policy. It is important to remember that transactionality has always been an integral part of the transatlantic relationship, but it was never at the expense of the values that underpinned it, and indeed reinforced both US national and European regional interests in doing so.

Throughout the 1990s, and well into the 2000s, Nato clearly represented the US’s preferred method of maintaining its military presence in Europe (including US bases, weapons and troops stationed in member countries). The US drove the redefinition of post-cold war Nato, to include former Warsaw Pact countries including Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

    Read more:
US and Russia squabble over Arctic security as melting ice opens up shipping routes

The question now is whether US leadership in Nato was focused so extensively on security of Europe and pushing back against the Soviets that for a long time the dilemma of who paid for what was essentially set aside.

    Long overdue problems?

But two wake-up calls were to come. The first was the increasingly clear indications from US administrations from Barack Obama’s presidency onwards that the US was ill at ease with Nato as a whole, and it was unhappy with the lower financial commitment, than the US, coming from European members.

The second was in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea. Unfortunately, the first warning sign by Obama was largely ignored; and when Russia invaded Crimea, Nato did not step up to push back against Putin’s expansionism.

Now, Nato finds itself once again in the crosshairs of US anger about funding, and with Trump furious at European defence spending levels, and determined to massively revise the transatlantic bargain.

Trump’s first administration put spending from European Nato members firmly on the table. His recent position is merely a continuation of that theme.

From the European perspective, the US was, and is, a key part of the collective security structure that has empowered European defence and deterrence, but possibly with an out-of-date funding model.

Trump, meanwhile, appears to see the US’s involvement as politically naïve. He seems to view Nato as strategically futile and defence spending imbalances as an indication that Nato is nothing more than a giant security racket.

What is stark is the reversal between the US having helped found Nato and as the leading nation backing of a rule-bound global system under international law and Trump’s preference to reject any responsibilities for global leadership and stability.

What has come as a shock to European members is not perhaps the demands regarding improving defence funding, but the abdication of US leadership and the threat to leave Nato completely, with no ongoing US responsibility to defend the world order.

The onus is now on European Nato members to make both serious and swift changes. Indications of far more serious financial commitments, including from Germany, are emerging. European defence spending overall increased by 11.7% over the last year to roughly €423.3 billion (£371 billion), representing ten years of consecutive regional growth.

Next steps include focusing on AI-led technologies, cheap drones, digital tech and improved commitments to joint projects.

But the hardest task is also the most urgent. Namely, to avoid the chaos of a unilateral US withdrawal from Nato.

There’s a need to move the financial and military burden to Europe in a way agreeable to the US before the Nato summit in June. Discussions on how to achieve this need to cover everything from nuclear deterrence to challenges arising from the conflict in Ukraine.

Whether Rutte and European states can indeed preserve and maintain the collective security foundations on which Nato was first built remains to be seen. But, certainly, the current world situation is no less dangerous that the world in which Nato itself was first built.

Amelia Hadfield does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Trump thinks tariffs can bring back the glory days of US manufacturing. Here’s why he’s wrong

Source: The Conversation – UK – By James Scott, Reader in International Politics, King’s College London

The “liberation day” tariffs announced by US president Donald Trump have one thing in common – they are being applied to goods only. Trade in services between the US and its partners is not affected. This is the perfect example of Trump’s peculiar focus on trade in goods and, by extension, his nostalgic but outdated obsession with manufacturing.

The fallout from liberation day continues, with markets down around the world. The decision to apply tariffs on a country-by-country basis means that rules about where a product is deemed to come from are now of central importance.

The stakes for getting it wrong could be high. Trump has threatened that anyone seeking to avoid tariffs by shifting the supposed origin of a product to a country with lower rates could face a ten-year jail term.

The White House initially refused to specify how it came up with the tariff levels. But it appears that each country’s rate was arrived at by taking the US goods trade deficit with that country, dividing it by the value of that country’s goods exports to the US and then halving it, with 10% set as the minimum.

It has been noted that this is effectively the approach suggested by AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude and Grok when asked how to create “an even playing field”.

Economically, Trump’s fixation on goods makes no sense. This view is not unique to the president (though he feels it unusually strongly). There is a broader fetishisation of manufacturing in many countries. One theory is that it is potentially ingrained in human thinking by pre-historic experiences of finding food, fuel and shelter dominating all other activities.

But for Trump, the thinking is likely related to a combination of nostalgia for a bygone (somewhat imagined) age of manufacturing, and concern over the loss of quality jobs that provide a solid standard of living for blue collar workers – a core part of his political base.

Nostalgia is not a sensible basis for forming economic policy. But the role emotions play in international affairs has been receiving more attention. It has been identified as an “emotional turn” (where the importance of emotion is recognised) in the discipline of international relations.

Of course, that’s not to say that the concern over jobs and the unequal effects of globalisation is misplaced. It is clear that blue-collar workers have suffered in the US (and elsewhere) for the last 40 to 50 years, with governments paying little attention to the decline.

Many blue-collar workers, like these GM car plant employees in Missouri, have paid a high price for globalisation.
    Jon Rehg/Shutterstock

Data on weekly earnings in the US split by educational level show that wages for those without a degree have declined or stagnated since around 1973, particularly among men. This is the cohort that disproportionately voted for Trump. Globalisation has created many benefits, not least to the United States, but these tend to be concentrated among the better educated.

All too often the service-sector jobs that have filled the gap left by declining manufacturing have been precarious. That means low wages, low security, lack of union representation and few opportunities for moving up the ladder. It is unsurprising that there has been a backlash.

    Can’t turn back the clock

So will Trump’s tariffs plan address this? The great tragedy is that there is little reason to think that they will.

The loss of manufacturing jobs is partly about globalisation, which Trump is seeking to reverse. But research shows that trade and globalisation are often more of a scapegoat than a driving force, responsible for only a small chunk of job losses (typically said to be about 10%).

The main cause of manufacturing’s decline is rising productivity. Today it simply requires fewer people to make goods due to the relentless increase in automation and the associated rise in how much each worker produces.

If the whole US trade deficit were rebalanced through expanding domestic industries, this would increase the share of manufacturing employment within the US by about one percentage point, from about 8% today to 9% according to US Bureau of Labor Statistics figures. This is not going to be transformative.

The effects of tariffs are also doubled-edged. They will probably shift some manufacturing back to the US – but this could be self-defeating. More US steel production is good for workers, but the higher cost of US steel feeds through to higher prices for the products manufactured with it.

This includes the cars Trump obsesses about. Less competitive prices means lower exports and a loss of jobs. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.

The 1950s were a unique time. By the end of the second world war, the US was a manufacturing powerhouse, accounting for one third of the world’s exports while taking only around a tenth of its imports.

There were few other industrialised countries at the time, and these had been flattened by the war. The US alone had avoided this, creating a world of massive demand for US exports since nowhere else had a significant manufacturing base. That was never going to last forever.

The other point about that time in history is that the economic system had been shaped by colonialism. European powers had used their position of power to prevent the rest of the world from industrialising. As those empires were dismantled and the shackles came off, those newly independent countries began their own processes of industrialisation.

As for the US today, President Trump is mistaken if he really believes that tariffs will bring a new golden age of manufacturing. The world has changed.

James Scott does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

The Company’s own shares shall be repurchased to be used for carrying out acquisitions or implementing other arrangements related to the Company’s business, for optimising the Company’s capital structure, for implementing the Company’s incentive scheme or otherwise to be transferred further or cancelled.

Own shares can be repurchased otherwise than in proportion to the shareholdings of the shareholders (directed repurchase). The share purchase will decrease the Company’s distributable unrestricted equity. The Board of Directors resolves on all other terms and conditions for the repurchase and/or acceptance as pledge of the Company’s own shares.

The authorisation remains in force until the end of the next Annual General Meeting, however no later than until 30 June 2026. The authorisation revokes earlier unused authorisations to resolve on the repurchase and/or acceptance as pledge of the Company’s own shares.

Further, the General Meeting authorized the Board of Directors to resolve on the issuance of shares and the issuance of special rights entitling to shares within the meaning of chapter 10, section 1 of the Finnish Limited Liability Companies Act in one or more tranches either against consideration or free of consideration.

The number of shares to be issued, including shares received on the basis of the special rights shall not exceed a maximum of 814,000 shares, which corresponds to approximately 10% of all shares in the Company. The Board of Directors may resolve either to issue new shares or to transfer treasury shares held by the Company. The total maximum number of shares to be issued for the purpose of share-based incentive schemes is 162,800 shares, which corresponds to approximately 2.0% of all the shares in the Company. The maximum number of shares intended for the incentive schemes is included in the maximum number of the issuance authorisation referred to above.

The authorisation entitles the Board of Directors to resolve on all terms of the share issue and the issuance of special rights entitling to shares, including the right to deviate from the shareholders’ pre-emptive subscription right (directed issue). The authorisation may be used to strengthen the Company’s balance sheet and financial position, to pay purchase prices for acquisitions, in share-based incentive schemes or for other purposes resolved by the Board of Directors.

The authorisation remains in force until the end of the next Annual General Meeting, however no later than until 30 June 2026. The authorisation revokes earlier authorisations concerning share issues and the issuance other special rights entitling to shares.

  • MIL-OSI: New Report Finds Long Concession Lines at MLB Games Cause Fans to Miss Crucial Plays, Vendors to Lose Revenue

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Mashgin, the AI-powered checkout company, today released data revealing the impact that concession lines at Major League Baseball (MLB) games have on the fan experience, leaving fans frustrated and vendor revenue on the table. Over half (53%) of the MLB fans surveyed estimated that they wait 15 minutes or more in line each time they go to the concession stand, meaning they are missing close to one full inning every time they leave their seat for food and beverage items. The wait time has an impact on fans: 79% say that they’ve missed a crucial or memorable play during a game because they were waiting in a concessions line.

The new report, Beyond the Bases: The Impact of Concession Lines on the MLB Fan Experience, surveyed over 530 baseball fans who have attended a game in the last two seasons. It illustrates that, while the MLB continues to modernize the on-field experience with in-game technology, there remains a significant opportunity to use in-stadium technologies to expedite and improve aspects of the fan experience that take away from enjoying the game.

Concession Lines Resulting in Fan FOMO
Food and drinks are essential aspects of the game-day experience — hot dogs, beers, peanuts, Cracker Jacks, sunflower seeds, and more are all staples found at every MLB stadium. 67% of survey respondents said that enjoying food and beverage is one of their favorite parts of attending a game, second only to socializing with friends and family (78%).

However, 56% of fans surveyed said they feel rushed when they leave their seat for the concession stand because they’re anxious about missing the game. The fear of missing out is real, with over 80% of fans saying that they have abandoned a concessions purchase because the line was taking too long. This taps into an unfortunate shared experience amongst fans — missing a home run, double play or big hit and hearing the roar of the crowd from afar.

Concessionaires leaving money on the table
Fans estimate that they spend an average of $56 per game on concessions. However, that number could be higher — 77% of fans said that they would buy more food and/or beverages if concession wait times were shorter. And these lines are the least favorite part of attending a game, according to 71% of fans. They dislike it even more than parking and transportation (68%), dirty/unpleasant restrooms (61%), and waiting in line to enter the stadium (53%).

Technology can help solve all of these problems, and fans are reporting that they are starting to use them more often. 46% said they have used automated or self-checkout machines at concessions, 38% have used mobile apps to order ahead for food and beverage, and 29% have used facial ID to gain entry to the park.

Mashgin AI-powered checkout systems use powerful computer vision technology and practical AI to significantly reduce transaction times. Mashgin kiosks are deployed at 20 out of 30 MLB stadiums, allowing fans to spend less time waiting in line and more time watching the game, while increasing revenue opportunities for concessionaires. During the 2024 MLB season, Mashgin delivered a median transaction time of under 15 seconds across over 3.6 million transactions and $88M in concession sales.

“MLB has done a great job making the game faster and more entertaining. As the league continues to build an even better fan experience, I predict some focus will shift from the field to the promenade,” said Brandon Scott, vice president of sales at Mashgin. “Implementing AI-powered technologies that can expedite food and beverage transactions will drive higher satisfaction for both fans and vendors. It’s truly a win-win.”

  • MIL-OSI: ESO Releases Fire Service Index: Reports 28% Increase in Wildland Fire Incidents, Calls for Improvements in Decontamination Efforts

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

AUSTIN, Texas, April 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ESO, a leading data services and software provider for EMS, fire departments, hospitals, and state and federal agencies, released its 2025 Fire Service Index, which illustrates the staggering impact of nationwide wildland fires as well as the demand for broader decontamination efforts. Now in its sixth year, the index analyzed 7,919,600 incidents from calendar year 2024 from 2,739 participating agencies nationwide that use ESO services.

“The Fire Service Index represents our commitment to protecting those who protect us,” said Antonio Fernandez, PhD, NRP, principal research scientist for ESO. “The insights we uncover can guide agencies to direct prevention resources where they’re needed most. By making these data freely accessible, we’re empowering fire departments nationwide to benchmark performance, identify critical trends and take proactive measures in their communities.”

Notable findings from the analysis include:

    • 54,489 wildland fire incidents were reported in 2024 (up 28% year over year), totaling 1.78 million total acres burned—a 650% increase in acreage from 2023.
    • Wildland fire incidents were frequent throughout most of the year—not just in warmer months.
    • Fire departments continue to respond to more EMS calls than fire incidents. EMS incidents accounted for the majority of all incidents (63%), while fire responses accounted for just 3% of all calls.
    • 19% of firefighters did not document a decontamination procedure (e.g. cleaning exposed areas, dry-brushing gear, using wet wipes, etc.) after fire exposure, which can drastically increase long-term health risks such as cancer.

“The intensifying frequency of wildland fires across the country is yet another reason why proper decontamination has become critical to safeguarding the health and lives of our nation’s firefighters,” said Bill Gardner, executive director of fire and EMS for ESO. “We’re encouraged that 80% of departments are documenting one decontamination method after exposure, but we cannot stress enough the importance of increasing that number to 100% and establishing multiple decontamination procedures as the gold standard.”

Decontamination metrics are now available in ESO’s static benchmarking dashboards. This enhancement allows fire departments nationwide to compare themselves with peers and enables ESO to better monitor prevention effectiveness.

The release of the 2025 Fire Service Index follows ESO’s receipt of the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) V1 Compatible Badge, which ensures Fire Incident customers remain compliant with the new standard. To access the 2025 ESO Fire Service Index, click here. To learn more about ESO, visit www.eso.com.

    Methodology and Limitations
The dataset for the 2025 ESO Fire Service Index report is real-world data, compiled and aggregated from 7,919,600 incidents that occurred in calendar year 2024 across the United States. There are no universal rules designed around these trends. The purpose of the Index is to be informative and directional, but it is not intended to be a scientific study—nor is it intended to be comprehensive in nature. ESO hopes this Index serves as a body of literature that adds to the discussion and conversation around best practices for each of the selected metrics to help improve community health and safety.

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and BERLIN, April 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Accelerate 2025

    News Summary

Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT), the global cybersecurity leader driving the convergence of networking and security, today announced significant FortiAI innovations embedded across the Fortinet Security Fabric platform to enhance protection against new and emerging threats, simplify and automate security and network operations, and secure employee use of AI-enabled services.

“Fortinet’s AI advantage stems from the breadth and depth of our AI ecosystem—shaped by over a decade of AI innovation and reinforced by more patents than any other cybersecurity vendor,” said Michael Xie, Founder, President, and Chief Technology Officer at Fortinet. “By embedding FortiAI across the Fortinet Security Fabric platform, including new agentic AI capabilities, we’re empowering our customers to reduce the workload on their security and network analysts while improving the efficiency, speed, and accuracy of their security and networking operations. In parallel, we’ve added coverage across the Fabric ecosystem to enable customers to monitor and control the use of GenAI-enabled services within their organization.”

The Need for AI-Driven Protection and Security for AI Systems

Enterprises must leverage security solutions that use AI to defend against increasingly advanced threats—especially those that use AI to bypass defenses, automate attacks, and exploit vulnerabilities. At the same time, organizations must secure their own AI systems from data poisoning, adversarial manipulation, and unauthorized access. Without robust protection, AI can become both a target and a weapon for cybercriminals. Fortinet has you covered, with more than 500 AI patents issued and pending, and more than 15 years of AI innovation, delivering AI-driven security to stop advanced threats while ensuring AI systems remain protected and trustworthy.

    New AI Innovations from Fortinet

FortiAI has now expanded to encompass Fortinet’s entire AI-driven approach across security and network operations, protecting environments, and securing AI models and LLMs. Integrated into the Fortinet Security Fabric platform, it delivers intelligent, autonomous capabilities to stop advanced threats, streamline operations, and support secure AI adoption.

This expansion of FortiAI introduces new capabilities across two key areas:

FortiAI-Assist combines GenAI, agentic AI, and AIOps to simplify and transform security and network operations with intelligent automation and analytics. New capabilities include:

    • Agentic AI Applications for Network Operations
      • Autonomous network management initiated through the GenAI assistant enables the creation of network configuration and security policy updates, validation and correction of existing configurations, and troubleshooting and remediation of network issues without human intervention.
      • Automated network optimization and troubleshooting using GenAI and AIOps enhance network operations for wired, wireless, and SD-WAN, and proactively identify and offer remediation of issues before users are impacted.
    • Agentic AI Applications for Security Operations
      • Automated alert triage prioritizes notifications based on risk, context, and historical patterns, suppresses duplicate alerts, and only flags high-confidence threats within the system or directly to the threat analyst, depending on the organization’s preferences.
      • Adaptive threat hunting scans logs, network traffic, and user behavior to search for threats without waiting for human input.
      • Root-cause tracing uses AI-driven reasoning to identify an attack’s origin, method, and impact.
      • Threat intelligence enrichment enhances security intelligence by correlating attack patterns and attributing adversary tactics, improving proactive defense.

FortiAI-Protect enhances security with AI-driven threat detection, enabling the identification of advanced and unknown threats. It also provides contextual risk assessments to strengthen security and enforce access controls for third-party GenAI applications. These enhancements further increase the value of FortiGuard AI-powered Security Services for both new and existing customers. New capabilities include:

    • Detecting AI application usage for over 6,500 AI URLs, including GenAI applications. Security teams also gain added context around the use cases, the model used for training, and the location of where the data goes.
    • Controlling access and content to GenAI using zero-trust principles allows security teams to block shadow AI or high-risk AI application usage. Visibility into AI application lists and additional context, such as geolocation and training models, also allows admins to define organization-wide AI usage policies.
    • Enhancing threat analysis and malware protection by expanding machine learning and large-scale data analysis to detect and neutralize emerging malware threats. Continued refinement of contextual correlation with known threat indicators further reduces false positives, ensuring precise threat identification while maintaining operational efficiency.
    • Improving safeguards against sophisticated attacks by continuing to train the intrusion prevention system (IPS) machine learning models to adapt and detect new attack techniques.

Fortinet Helps Organizations Secure their AI Models, Infrastructure, and Data

Organizations can also securely adopt AI with FortiAI-SecureAI by leveraging capabilities that span the Fortinet Security Fabric platform to protect AI infrastructure from network-based threats, secure web applications and APIs, and defend cloud-native AI workloads across major providers. FortiAI-SecureAI ensures data integrity, prevents LLM data leakage, safeguards AI models and intellectual property, enforces zero-trust access, and enables early attack detection and response.

FortiAI Prioritizes Data Privacy for Organizations

FortiAI uses a multi-layered data protection approach to enforce strict privacy controls, preventing data that is shared with the Fortinet GenAI assistant from training the LLM. Queries are also processed locally, ensuring data never leaves the network, while sensitive information is blocked or masked before reaching the language model.

With FortiAI-Assist, FortiAI-Protect, and FortiAI-SecureAI, Fortinet continues to lead in AI-driven cybersecurity to help organizations stay ahead of evolving threats.

  • MIL-OSI: AI Tools Struggle to “Cheat” Soft Skills Assessments Designed to Identify Top Talent, New Cangrade Research Finds

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

WATERTOWN, Mass., April 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cangrade today announced the results of its first AI-Enabled Candidates in Hiring Report, exploring the performance of AI tools, like ChatGPT, “cheating” the interview process. The findings suggest that while job seekers are leveraging generative artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their applications, AI tools struggled to successfully navigate Cangrade’s soft skills assessments designed to identify top talent.

AI is reshaping the job market, making it easier for both recruiters to market roles and for candidates to apply to jobs. This has resulted in a significant increase in the number of applicants per role, but a decrease in serious, qualified candidates. To stand out among the masses, people are turning to AI to draft resumes, generate interview responses, and complete skills assessments.

Although it seems to be a smart solution to highlight keywords and metrics desirable to recruiters for a specific role, AI may actually be doing job seekers a disservice. In fact, Cangrade’s research showed that AI-assisted applicants fail to effectively perform on hiring assessments designed to measure job-relevant personality traits.

    Other key findings include:

    • AI-generated responses had only a 12% success rate in passing Cangrade’s hiring assessment, a figure comparable to acceptance rates at top universities.
    • ChatGPT consistently avoided extreme responses, favoring cautious agreement over strong opinions. If a role that requires high attention to detail, like an accountant, “slightly agrees” with the statement, “I find it hard to focus,” this could negatively impact the candidates’ chances of moving forward.
    • AI prioritized traits like persistence, goal achievement, and prosocial behavior, while steering clear of “negative” interpersonal traits. This would be counterproductive for jobs focused on individual contributions vs. teams.
    • AI struggled with job-specific nuances, leading to misalignment with role requirements, reducing its effectiveness in passing assessments.

The study underscores the need for HR professionals to adapt their hiring processes to identify and mitigate AI-enabled application inflation. While banning AI outright is impractical, organizations can implement key strategies to ensure hiring accuracy, including:

    • Leveraging soft skills assessments that lack clear “right” or “wrong” answers.
    • Implementing AI-resistant hiring techniques, such as time-limited assessments, video interviews, and AI-detection tools.
    • Reducing reliance on resumes and cover letters, which are easily manipulated by AI.

“As AI becomes more embedded in the job application process, HR teams need to evolve their hiring strategies to distinguish genuine top talent from AI-enhanced applications,” said Gershon Goren, founder and CEO, Cangrade. “Our research shows that well-designed soft skills assessments remain an effective first line of defense against AI-enabled job seekers overstating their abilities.”
