    Source: Government of South Africa

    Sunday, July 20, 2025

The South African government has condemned Israel’s attacks on the Syrian capital Damascus, blowing up part of the Syrian Ministry of Defence and hitting airstrikes near the Presidential Palace.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) described the attack on Wednesday, 16 July 2025, as a flagrant violation of the country’s territorial integrity and international law.

“Israel’s announcement on 17 July 2025, that it will continue to occupy Syrian territory south of the capital Damascus is a serious threat to Syria’s sovereignty. Israel’s redeployment of forces in the Golan Heights, its occupation of Quneitra near the Golan Heights, and its airstrikes on Suwayda, Daraa, and in the centre of Damascus are a military escalation that threatens security and stability in the country and the region.

“The United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, has called on Israel to cease any violations of Syria’s sovereignty and respect the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement,” DIRCO said on Friday.

South Africa concurred with the UN Secretary-General, who also condemned Israel’s “escalatory airstrikes” and called for an immediate de-escalation of violence and measures to facilitate humanitarian access. –SAnews.gov.za

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Advocacy – Gaza is Starving: A Last-Minute Call for Action – PSNA

Statement issued by the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA)

The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA) issues this urgent and desperate call: Gaza is starving, and we must act now.

Hospitals and emergency clinics in Gaza are overwhelmed. Unprecedented numbers of Palestinians — children, women, and the elderly — are collapsing from hunger and exhaustion. Medical professionals warn that hundreds face imminent death, their bodies unable to survive the severe famine conditions created by Israel’s ongoing siege and deliberate starvation tactics.

This is not a natural disaster. This is the result of a man-made blockade, a deliberate policy of collective punishment — and it constitutes a grave violation of international law.

    This is a last-minute call.

    PSNA calls on:

    • The New Zealand Government to immediately condemn Israel’s weaponisation of starvation and demand an end to the siege, a permanent ceasefire, and unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza.
    • All political parties and elected officials to break their silence and act with urgency to prevent further loss of life.
    • The people of Aotearoa to stand up and speak out. Protest. Write. Donate. Mobilise.
    • The media to stop turning away, to report on the famine and the mass suffering of civilians in Gaza with the urgency and humanity it demands.

As New Zealanders, we have a proud tradition of standing against injustice and apartheid. Now is the time to uphold that legacy, not with words, but with action.

Gaza is starving. We cannot delay. We must not look away.

  • MIL-OSI China: Messi brace powers Miami past Red Bulls

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Lionel Messi scored two goals and set up another as Inter Miami recovered from a goal down to crush New York Red Bulls 5-1 in the MLS on Saturday.

German defender Alexander Hack gave the hosts the lead by volleying home from Emil Forsberg’s corner at the near post.

Messi then sent a sublime through ball into the path of his former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba, who took a touch before rifling a shot into the far corner.

Alba turned provider three minutes later as his cut-back allowed Telasco Segovia to fire in a first-time effort from eight yards.

Inter Miami was suddenly in overdrive and Venezuelan midfielder Segovia made it 3-1 just before halftime as he pounced on a loose ball to slot home from distance.

Messi extended his side’s lead by running onto Sergio Busquets’ defense-splitting pass from deep inside his own half and rounding goalkeeper Carlos Coronel before rolling the ball into an unguarded net.

The Florida outfit completed the rout in the 75th minute when Messi chested down Luis Suarez’s cross and smashed his shot into the top-left corner.

Messi has now scored at least twice in six of his past seven matches. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner now has 18 goals and seven assists in 18 MLS outings this year.

Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano heaped praise on Messi after the match, saying the Argentine proved yet again why he is one of the greatest players in history.

“Ultimately, I think any sports fan, not just football fans, admires these types of athletes, whether it’s Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan in his time, Rafa Nadal,” Mascherano told a post-match news conference.

“These are people who have transcended sports, and the reality is that those of us who have the opportunity to experience this up close are very privileged.”

The result leaves Inter Miami fifth in the Eastern Conference with 41 points, seven points behind leaders Cincinnati but with three games in hand. New York Red Bulls are ninth, eight points further back.

Source: Palestine Forum of New Zealand

The Palestine Forum of New Zealand joins the international cry of alarm: Gaza is starving — and the world must respond with urgency and conscience.

In recent days, shocking scenes have emerged from Gaza’s hospitals: children too weak to cry, elderly people collapsing from exhaustion, entire families on the brink of death. Medical workers are reporting unprecedented levels of malnutrition and starvation across all age groups. Hundreds are now beyond the reach of aid unless immediate action is taken.

This is not a humanitarian crisis caused by natural disaster — this is a political crime, the result of Israel’s deliberate use of starvation as a weapon of war, in violation of international humanitarian law.

    This is a last-minute call.

    We call on:

    • The Government of Aotearoa New Zealand to speak out forcefully against Israel’s blockade and famine policies, and to use every diplomatic and legal avenue to demand an immediate end to the siege on Gaza.
    • The New Zealand public to stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza — through protest, education, advocacy, and humanitarian support.
    • The international community to act now to prevent mass death, and to hold those responsible accountable.

We also urge faith groups, cultural institutions, unions, student bodies, and tangata whenua to raise their voices and stand alongside our Palestinian whānau in this moment of unprecedented suffering.

What we are witnessing is not simply a tragedy — it is an atrocity. The starvation of Gaza is not a distant issue. It is a test of our shared humanity.

Let history not remember our silence. Let us remember our courage.

ANKARA, July 20 (Xinhua) — “Israel’s continued attacks on Syrian territory” are worsening the crisis in Syria, Anadolu Agency reported, citing Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

“Any attack on the territorial integrity, unity and sovereignty of Syria undermines regional peace efforts,” Fidan told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a telephone conversation on Saturday about the situation in southern Syria.

According to H. Fidan, it is important to implement the mutual understanding reached by the parties, which should concern an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire throughout the country, announced earlier that day by the Syrian authorities.

In a statement released on Saturday morning, Syrian authorities said the truce was aimed at preserving national unity and ensuring the safety of civilians in “critical circumstances,” calling the move a national and humanitarian commitment.

The statement came hours after US Special Representative for Syria Tom Barak announced the ceasefire on social media site X, saying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa had agreed to end the fighting with the mediation of M. Rubio. –0–

  • Clashes rage in Druze region as Syria struggles to enforce ceasefire

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Sectarian clashes escalated on Saturday in Syria’s predominantly Druze region of Sweida, with machine gun fire and mortar shelling heard after days of bloodshed, as the Islamist-led government struggled to enforce a ceasefire.

Reuters reporters heard gunfire from inside Sweida city and saw shells landing in nearby villages. There were no immediate, confirmed reports of casualties.

The government had announced that security forces were being deployed to the southern region in an effort to maintain peace and urged all parties to halt fighting after nearly a week of factional violence in which hundreds have been killed.

Late on Saturday, the interior ministry said clashes in Sweida city had subsided and the area had been cleared of Bedouin tribal fighters following the deployment.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reported that at least 940 people had been killed in clashes around Sweida since last week. Reuters could not independently verify the death toll.

Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa stated that “Arab and American” mediation had helped restore calm before the latest escalation. He also criticized Israel for conducting airstrikes earlier in the week.

Violence in Druze Region Challenges Damascus

The fighting poses a fresh challenge to the authority of Sharaa’s Islamist-dominated government, which assumed power after rebels ousted autocratic President Bashar al-Assad in December.

The unrest began last week as clashes between the Druze—a religious minority native to southern Syria, the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and parts of Lebanon and Jordan—and Syrian Bedouin tribes. Government forces intervened to defuse tensions but ended up clashing with Druze gunmen and attacking Druze communities.

Saturday’s violence once again pitted Druze fighters against Bedouin tribesmen, according to eyewitnesses.

The conflict has drawn in neighboring Israel, which launched airstrikes in southern Syria and on the defense ministry in Damascus while Syrian government forces battled Druze fighters. Israel claims it is acting to protect the Druze, who also form a notable minority in Israel.

However, Israel and Washington remain divided over Syria. The U.S. supports a centralized Syrian state under Sharaa’s leadership, which has pledged to govern for all citizens. Israel, however, argues that the government is dominated by jihadists and poses a threat to minorities.

In March, Syrian government forces were implicated in mass killings of members of the Alawite minority, from which much of Assad’s elite hailed.

    Tensions at a Boiling Point

On Saturday, the Syrian presidency issued a statement announcing an immediate ceasefire and called for an end to hostilities. President Sharaa declared that Syria would not become “a testing ground for partition, secession, or sectarian incitement.”

He blamed Druze gunmen for the latest outbreak, accusing them of launching revenge attacks against Bedouins.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned Sharaa’s remarks, saying he was siding with the attackers. “In al-Sharaa’s Syria, it is very dangerous to be a member of a minority—Kurd, Druze, Alawite, or Christian,” he wrote on X.

On Friday, U.S. envoy Tom Barrack announced that Syria and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire. Barrack, who serves as both U.S. ambassador to Turkey and Washington’s Syria envoy, called on Druze, Bedouins, Sunnis, and other minority groups to “build a new and united Syrian identity.”

Israel has repeatedly targeted Syrian military facilities since Assad’s fall, saying it wants southern Syria, particularly areas near its border, to remain demilitarized. On Friday, an Israeli official said Israel had agreed to allow Syrian forces limited access to Sweida for two days.

    Sweida Hospital Overwhelmed

Mansour Namour, a resident of a village near Sweida city, reported that mortar shells were still falling near his home on Saturday afternoon, with at least 22 people wounded.

Dr. Omar Obeid, director of a local hospital in Sweida, said the facility was overwhelmed. “The hospital is full of bodies and wounded from the past few days. All the injuries are from bombs—some with chest wounds, others with shrapnel injuries to their limbs,” he said.

Syria’s interior authorities said Saturday night that through their extensive efforts to implement a newly-reached ceasefire agreement, Bedouin tribal fighters have fully withdrawn from the southern Syrian city of Sweida.

“After intensive efforts … and following the deployment of internal security forces in northern and western Sweida, all tribal fighters have been evacuated from the city and the clashes have ceased inside its neighborhoods,” interior authorities spokesperson Noureddin al-Baba said in a televised statement.

Earlier on Saturday, a three-phase ceasefire agreement, brokered by the United States, Türkiye, Jordan, and other regional actors to halt the violence in Sweida that has claimed at least 940 lives since July 13, took effect.

Hours later, fierce fighting erupted in Sweida between Druze armed groups and Bedouin tribal fighters.

According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Druze fighters launched a counteroffensive late Saturday, reclaiming Sweida city after hours of clashes.

Tribal forces, withdrawing from the city, responded with mortar attacks that caused material damage and possible civilian injuries, said the SOHR.

In a statement released earlier Saturday evening, Syria’s Druze spiritual leadership accused Bedouin tribal militias of violating the newly reached ceasefire in southern Sweida province and committing “crimes that shame all humanity.”

The statement said international guarantors should enforce the ceasefire and stop “a campaign of terror and collective punishment” against Sweida’s residents.

The SOHR said Sweida is facing a looming humanitarian catastrophe, citing widespread infrastructure damage, medical supply shortages, and a complete collapse of the main hospital.

According to Syria’s information chief Hamzah Mustafa, the ceasefire agreement involves deploying the country’s Internal Security Forces to separate warring factions and halt hostilities in the first phase, opening humanitarian corridors between Sweida and southern Daraa province in the second, and restoring state institutions and ensuring the gradual return of law enforcement in the third.

“This is the path Sweida needs today after months of tension and exhaustion,” Mustafa said in a press conference, “The state remains committed to protecting all Syrians and restoring national unity.”

Noting that 21 shelters have been established in Daraa, with 20 more underway, Syria’s emergency management chief Raed al-Saleh also demanded the release of kidnapped civil defense official Hamzah al-Amarin to resume humanitarian operations.

The nearly week-long fierce clashes in Sweida, which prompted fears of a broader regional escalation, started after armed members of a Bedouin tribe in the countryside of Sweida, a predominantly Druze area, reportedly assaulted and robbed a young Druze man near the town of al-Masmiyah, along the Damascus-Sweida highway.

The brutal attack sparked retaliatory kidnappings, spiraling into full-scale clashes between local Druze fighters, government troops, and Bedouin militias.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Infrastructure projects to drive jobs and growth

    Source: New Zealand Government

Billions of dollars worth of infrastructure projects getting underway in the next few months will drive economic activity and create thousands of jobs across the country, Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop say.

The Ministers today released an infrastructure update showing $6 billion of government-funded construction is due to start between now and Christmas.

“The projects getting underway include new roads, hospitals, schools, high-tech laboratories and other government buildings,” Nicola Willis says.

“That means spades in the ground, jobs throughout the country and a stronger economy.

“Improving the quality of New Zealand’s infrastructure is critical to growing the economy and helping Kiwis with the cost of living.

“Good roads, schools and hospitals help business to move goods and services to market quickly and efficiently, children to learn and doctors and nurses to get patients back on their feet.”

Chris Bishop says the projects getting underway will create thousands of employment opportunities for New Zealanders.

“Numbers vary according to the nature of projects, but data sourced from the Infrastructure Commission suggests each billion dollars of infrastructure investment per year equates to about 4500 jobs.

“In total, workers are expected to start construction on $3.9 billion worth of roading projects in the next few months. They include the Ōtaki to north of Levin expressway, the Melling interchange, the Waihoehoe Road upgrade, and the new Ōmanawa bridge on SH29. All will help to lift productivity by getting people and freight to their destinations quickly and safely.

“Health projects kicking off include upgrades to Auckland City Hospital, Middlemore Hospital, and the construction of a new acute mental health unit at Hutt Valley Hospital. Construction work on the new inpatients building at the new Dunedin Hospital has also just begun.

“Between now and the end of this year, school property projects valued at nearly $800 million will get underway across the country.

“Other Government infrastructure projects due to start before the end of this year include a massive new state-of-the-art biosecurity facility in Auckland for the Ministry of Primary Industries and the Papakura District Court interim courthouse.

“Importantly, this is just the start. The National Infrastructure Pipeline, managed by the Infrastructure Commission, now shows planned future projects totalling $207 billion across central government, local government and the private sector.”

Alongside the infrastructure update, Nicola Willis today released an update on the Government’s Infrastructure for Growth work programme. The update is the first refresh of the Going for Growth agenda launched in February to drive economic growth by backing business, improving infrastructure and skills, and removing barriers to innovation.

The update shows that since February the Government has delivered on 14 actions to build a stronger infrastructure pipeline and drive better value for money. They include:

    • streamlining land acquisition processes for major infrastructure projects
    • agreeing to fund more than $550 million of water, energy, Māori development and other projects through the Regional Infrastructure Fund; and
    • consulting on a draft National Infrastructure Plan due to become final by the end of the year that will give investors and businesses confidence and drive better value for money from public investment.

TEHRAN, July 19 (Xinhua) — At least 21 people were killed and 37 injured in a bus accident on an intercity road in Iran’s southern Fars province on Saturday, Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported.

The report said the incident took place on the road from Firuzabad to Kawar districts at 11:00 local time/07:30 GMT.

IRNA reported, citing Hossein Darvishi, Managing Director of the Fars Red Crescent Society, that three rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of the incident.

    H. Darvishi added that all the victims were taken to medical centers, and the bodies of the deceased were handed over to law enforcement agencies.

Fars Governor Hosseinali Amiri has demanded an investigation into the incident and a detailed report on its causes. –0–

  • MIL-Evening Report: Palestine solidarity rally greeted by Rainbow Warrior Gaza protest

    Asia Pacific Report

Palestinian supporters and protesters against the 21 months of Israeli genocide in Gaza marched after a rally in downtown Auckland today across the Viaduct to the Greenpeace environmental flagship Rainbow Warrior — and met a display of solidarity.

Several people on board the campaign ship, which has been holding open days over last weekend and this weekend, held up Palestinian flags and displayed a large banner declaring “Sanction Israel — Stop the genocide”.

About 300 people were in the vibrant rally and Greenpeace Aotearoa oceans campaigner Juan Parada came out on Halsey Wharf to speak to the protesters in solidarity over Gaza.

“Greenpeace stands for peace and justice, and environmental justice, not only for the environmental damage, but for the lives of the people,” said Parada, a former media practitioner.

Global environmental campaigners have stepped up their condemnation of the devastation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories as well as the protests over the genocide, which has so far killed almost 59,000 people, most of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Department, although some researchers say the actual death toll is far higher.

New research recently revealed that the carbon footprint of the first 15 months of Israel’s war on Gaza would be greater than the annual planet-warming emissions of 100 individual countries, worsening the global climate emergency on top of the huge civilian death toll.

The report cited by The Guardian indicated that Israel’s relentless bombardment, blockade and refusal to comply with international court rulings had “underscored the asymmetry of each side’s war machine, as well as almost unconditional military, energy and diplomatic support Israel enjoys from allies, including the US and UK”.

The Israeli war machine has been primarily blamed.

The report, titled “War on the Climate: A Multitemporal Study of Greenhouse Gas Emissions of the Israel-Gaza Conflict” and published by the Social Science Research Network, is part of a growing movement to hold states and businesses accountable for the climate and environmental costs of war and occupation.

    Greenpeace open letter
Greenpeace Aotearoa recently came out with strong statements about the genocidal war on Gaza with executive director Russel Norman earlier this month writing an open letter to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Minister Winston Peters, expressing his grave concerns about the “ongoing genocide in Gaza being carried out by Israeli forces” — and the ongoing failure of the New Zealand Government to impose meaningful sanctions on Israel.

He referred to the mounting death toll of starving Palestinians being deliberately shot at the notorious Israeli-US backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) food distribution sites.

Norman also cited an Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz report that Israeli soldiers had been ordered to deliberately shoot unarmed Palestinians seeking aid, quoting one Israeli soldier saying: “It’s a killing field.”

Today’s rally featured many Palestinians wearing thobe costumes in advance of Palestinian Traditional Dress Day on July 25.

This is a day to showcase and celebrate the rich Palestinian cultural heritage through traditional clothing that is intricately embroidered.

DAMASCUS, July 19 (Xinhua) — Syrian and Israeli leaders have reached a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement following sectarian clashes in southern Syria that prompted Israel to launch massive air strikes on the neighboring country.

US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barak announced the ceasefire early Saturday, saying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa had agreed to end the fighting with the mediation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The agreement was also supported by other countries in the region, including Turkey, Jordan and other neighbors of Syria.

Recall that in the province of As-Suwayda in southern Syria, violent inter-faith clashes continued for six days, which claimed several hundred lives and raised fears of a wider regional escalation.

The agreement will give Syrian government forces and security personnel access to all areas of As-Suwayda again, a local TV channel reported, citing informed sources. The deal includes the disbandment of all local groups, the transfer of heavy weapons, and the integration of former fighters into state security structures.

The Druze community’s spiritual leadership welcomed the ceasefire, expressed readiness to end ongoing fighting and called for a return to “wisdom and reason.” –0–

  • Badminton Asia Jr Championships: India mixed team storms into QFs with convincing win over UAE

    Source: Government of India (4)

India secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Junior Mixed Team Championships with a dominant 110–83 victory over the United Arab Emirates in their Group D clash on Saturday in Indonesia.

This win follows India’s impressive opening-day triumph over Sri Lanka on Friday. With Hong Kong China also registering two wins from as many matches, both teams have now confirmed their progression to the knockout stages. The two sides will face off on Sunday to determine the Group D winner.

The tournament is being played under a relay scoring format, where teams race to 110 points across 10 matches. India got off to a flying start, with girls’ singles player Rujula Ramu defeating Mysha Khan 11–5, followed by the mixed doubles pairing of C. Lalramsanga and Taarini Suri, who extended the lead to 22–11.

India maintained the lead throughout the contest, despite spirited resistance from the UAE in a few matches. At the halfway stage, the scoreboard read 55–41 in India’s favour.

US Open finalist Tanvi Sharma then delivered a clinical performance to stretch the lead to 66–46 against Madhumita Sundarapandian.

Lalramsanga returned to the court, this time partnering Reshika U in the second mixed doubles rubber, where they outplayed Adithya Kiran and Mysha Khan 11–5 to take India further ahead at 77–51, effectively putting the team in the driver’s seat.

India will now look to maintain their momentum and finish top of the group with a win against Hong Kong China on Sunday.

The team event follows a relay format, with the first side to reach 110 points declared the winner.

The championships are also seen as a key stepping stone towards the BWF Junior World Championships, which will be held at the state-of-the-art National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati later this year.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Aid cuts leave refugee agency unable to shelter six in 10 fleeing war in Sudan

    Source: APO

    .

Major cuts to aid budgets have already left people fleeing wars in Sudan and beyond without the assistance and protection they need, the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, said on Friday.

Globally, $1.4 billion of the agency’s programmes are being shuttered or put on hold, UNHCR said in a new report.

“We can’t stop water, you can’t stop sanitation, but we’re having to take decisions when it comes, for example, to shelter,” said UNHCR Director of External Relations Dominique Hyde.

“We’re have people arriving on a daily basis from Sudan, from the Darfur regions…arriving in Chad, not able to be given any shelter.”

In an urgent appeal for flexible funding from donors, Ms. Hyde noted that up to 11.6 million refugees and others risk losing access this year to direct humanitarian assistance from UNHCR. The figure represents about one third of those reached by the organization last year.

On the Sudan-Chad border, the UN agency is now unable to provide “even basic shelter” to more than six in 10 refugees fleeing the conflict. Thousands more vulnerable people have been left stranded in remote border locations in South Sudan too. “If we just had a bit more support, we could get them to settlements,” she insisted.

Because of the funding cuts, basic activities have already been hit hard. These include refugee registration, child protection, legal counselling and prevention of and responses to gender-based violence.

    All aid sectors hit

In South Sudan, 75 per cent of safe spaces for women and girls supported by UNHCR have closed. That means leaving up to 80,000 refugee women and girls without access to medical care, psychosocial support, legal aid, material support or income-generating activities. This includes survivors of sexual violence, UNHCR noted.

“Behind these numbers are real lives hanging in the balance,” Ms. Hyde said.

“Families are seeing the support they relied on vanish, forced to choose between feeding their children, buying medicines or paying rent, while hope for a better future slips out of sight. Every sector and operation has been hit and critical support is being suspended to keep lifesaving aid going.”

    Libya influx

Many of those impacted by the war in Sudan have taken the decision to move from Chad and Egypt to Libya, into the hands of people smugglers who dangerously overload boats with desperate people seeking to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

“What we’re observing now is that in terms of arrivals in Europe of…Sudanese refugees, [it] has increased since the beginning of the year by about 170 per cent compared to the first six months of 2024,” said UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado.

Support slashed from Niger to Ukraine

In camps hosting Myanmar’s Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, education for some 230,000 children could now be suspended. Meanwhile in Lebanon “UNHCR’s entire health programme is at risk of being shuttered by the end of the year,” Ms. Hyde continued.

In Niger and other emergency settings, cuts in financial aid for shelter have left families in overcrowded structures or at risk of homelessness. In Ukraine, financial aid has also been slashed, “leaving uprooted families unable to afford rent, food or medical treatment”, she noted.

Assistance to returning Afghans has also become another victim of global aid cuts. Around 1.9 million Afghan nationals have returned home or been forced back since the start of the year, “but financial aid for returnees is barely enough to afford food, let alone rent, undermining efforts to ensure stable reintegration”, UNHCR said.

    Legal aid halted

Overall, several UNHCR operations hit by severe funding gaps have now had to curtail investments in strengthening asylum systems and promoting regularisation efforts.

In Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Mexico, any prolonged lack of legal status means prolonged insecurity for people on the move, the UN agency said. This results in deepening poverty “as refugees are excluded from formal employment and greater exposure to exploitation and abuse”, Ms. Hyde explained.

Approximately one in three of the agency’s 550 offices around the world has been impacted by the cuts, Ms. Hyde told journalists in Geneva:

“We’re not in a position to do so much contingency planning; what we’re able to do is make decisions on priorities and, at this point, the priorities as I mentioned are dramatic.”

For 2025, UNHCR needs $10.6 billion. Only 23 per cent of this amount has been provided.

“Against this backdrop, our teams are focusing efforts on saving lives and protecting those forced to flee,” Ms. Hyde said. “Should additional funding become available, UNHCR has the systems, partnerships and expertise to rapidly resume and scale up assistance.”

  • MIL-OSI Africa: South Africa condemns Israeli attacks on Damascus and its announcement that it will continue to occupy Southern Syria

    Source: APO – Report:

    .

South Africa strongly condemns Israel’s latest attacks on the Syrian capital Damascus, on 16 July 2025, on the Syrian Ministry of Defence and air strikes near the Presidential Palace, which are a flagrant violation of the country’s territorial integrity and international law.

Israel’s announcement on 17 July 2025, that it will continue to occupy Syrian territory south of the capital Damascus is a serious threat to Syria’s sovereignty. Israel’s redeployment of forces in the Golan Heights, its occupation of Quneitra near the Golan Heights, and its airstrikes on Suwayda, Daraa, and in the centre of Damascus are a military escalation that threatens security and stability in the country and the region.

The United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, has called on Israel to cease any violations of Syria’s sovereignty and respect the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement. South Africa concurs with the UN Secretary-General, who also condemned Israel’s “escalatory airstrikes” and called for an immediate de-escalation of violence and measures to facilitate humanitarian access.

  • MIL-OSI China: Ceasefire deal reached between Syria, Israel with US mediation

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Syrian and Israeli leaders have reached a ceasefire agreement under the auspices of the United States after deadly sectarian clashes in southern Syria prompted Israeli intervention with massive strikes recently.

U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack announced the truce early Saturday, saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, under the sponsorship of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, agreed to a cessation of hostilities.

The deal is also backed by regional players, including Türkiye, Jordan, and Syria’s other neighbors.

“We call upon Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis to put down their weapons and, together with other minorities, build a new and united Syrian identity in peace and prosperity with its neighbors,” Barrack said in a post on social media.

The ceasefire deal followed six days of fierce sectarian clashes in the southern province of Sweida, which left hundreds dead and triggered fears of a broader, regional escalation.

Under the truce deal, Syrian government security and military institutions will be allowed to re-enter all parts of Sweida, according to sources cited by local TV reports.

The deal stipulates the dissolution of all local factions, the handover of heavy weapons, and the integration of former fighters into state security structures.

The spiritual leadership of the Druze community issued a statement welcoming the ceasefire, expressing readiness to end the ongoing hostilities and calling for a return to “wisdom and reason.”

The agreement came amid mounting humanitarian concerns in Sweida, where United Nations convoys were recently blocked from entering conflict zones.

The Syrian authorities have yet to comment on the ceasefire deal.

UNITED NATIONS, July 19 (Xinhua) — Daily fighting, preventable deaths, worsening fuel shortages, displacement and despair are increasingly turning mass shortages into the norm for residents of the Gaza Strip, the United Nations humanitarian body said Friday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Israeli authorities had issued another population displacement order, this time to northern Gaza. There were also alarming reports of malnourished children and adults in hospitals with insufficient resources to treat them.

According to OCHA, despite the resumption of limited fuel imports, the energy crisis continues to deepen. Due to the depletion of fuel reserves, solid waste collection has had to be suspended in recent days, and a number of water wells have been shut down, mainly in the Deir el-Balah area.

It is noted that specialized medical services such as dialysis have been reduced or completely stopped, and other services may also be disrupted due to fuel shortages. The limited remaining fuel supplies are mainly used to ensure the functioning of health systems, water supply, telecommunications, and transportation.

Humanitarian movements inside the Gaza Strip remain restricted as only seven out of 13 attempts to coordinate the movement of personnel and cargo with the Israeli authorities were successful, allowing humanitarian teams to deliver fuel, collect water, move generators, provide hygiene and sanitation supplies, and deliver much-needed medicines, OCHA said. –0–

DAMASCUS, July 19 (Xinhua) — Syria’s interim authorities on Friday called for restraint amid escalating violence in the southern province of As-Suwayda, vowing to send forces to contain the conflict.

In a statement, authorities expressed “deep concern and sorrow” over the ongoing deadly violence, calling the situation the result of “armed groups operating outside the law.”

“The Syrian Arab Republic reaffirms its identity as a state for all its citizens, regardless of sect or ethnicity,” the statement said, stressing that everyone must operate under a single national roof and within a single legal framework.

In response to the unfolding crisis, authorities said they were deploying special forces to contain the violence and resolve the conflict, and were taking political and security measures aimed at restoring stability and preventing a return to chaos.

Calling for “calm, wisdom and responsibility,” the statement called on all sides to cease hostilities, protect civilians and preserve the country’s social fabric.

The statement came amid ongoing violence in As-Suwayda province, where clashes between Druze and Bedouins escalated this week.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday that at least 638 people had been killed since fighting began on July 13, including 73 civilians and more than 280 security forces.

Bedouin attacks on Druze positions near the villages of Shekrawiyah and Wolga resumed on Friday, raising fears that sectarian violence could spiral out of control.

As tensions escalated, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Syrian military bases in As-Suwayda and the capital Damascus under the pretext of protecting the Druze community in Syria. –0–
