U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer announced a major step forward for future construction projects at Fort Drum in the Senate’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year (FY) 2026. The senator has secured required the funding authorization, a critical milestone that unlocks the funding process, for the planning and design of an aircraft maintenance hangar addition and an Operational Readiness Training Complex training barracks at Fort Drum, a vital step in unlocking the funding process . These new projects will add space to house Fort Drum’s aircraft and expand housing for soldiers who come to Fort Drum for training. Schumer said this is a priority for Fort Drum and will fight to secure the funding in appropriations.
“Fort Drum is vital to our national defense and is woven into the very fabric of the North Country, and this funding authorization is a major step towards bringing much-needed construction projects to life. Schumer said securing this $18.5 million authorization in the Senate is a massive step forward in the push to bring two Fort Drum Construction projects to life. Schumer has worked for years to deliver major federal investments to enhance Fort Drum’s capabilities. Schumer fought for years, personally calling the former Army Secretary, Defense Secretary, and Army Chief of Staff to deliver over $27 million in federal funding to construct a new railhead at Fort Drum, a top priority for the base. The senator also delivered over $21 million for a new Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Hangar at Fort Drum, and he secured $27 million for Fort Drum in the FY22 omnibus to replace the base’s existing water supply that was vulnerable to multiple forms of contamination, requiring Fort Drum to purchase half of its water supply from a municipal source. Schumer additionally secured nearly $10 million for two major Fort Drum projects in the end-of-year spending package for FY2023.

Washington, D.C. (July 21, 2025) — A new report from Greenpeace USA reveals how the deep sea mining industry has strategically exploited geopolitical tensions to fast-track mass-scale mineral extraction in one of the world’s most crucial and pristine frontiers.
Until very recently, a re-emergent deep sea mining industry justified its existence by promising to provide minerals to support the green energy transition. However, as this justification fell apart under scientific and financial scrutiny, start-ups like The Metals Company (TMC) shifted their rhetoric to focus on national security. Lobbying records show that TMC spent over half a million dollars across two years to lobby Congress and influence the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which sets the levels of funding for the U.S. military. Yet while these companies have asserted that the ocean’s minerals are essential for national security and defense readiness, the report found no evidence that the U.S. defense sector was actively looking to deep sea mining for critical resources.
Arlo Hemphill, Greenpeace USA’s project lead for the Stop Deep Sea Mining campaign, said: “For TMC, the green transition was always a false narrative. The numbers just didn’t add up to justify opening the world’s last unspoiled wilderness to mass-scale extractive exploitation. Now, the industry is repackaging itself as essential to national security and defense, exploiting real geopolitical tensions for personal profit. It’s a dangerous and unnecessary strategy that could destroy the international seabed to enrich a few.”
In April, President Trump, echoing the narrative of The Metals Company (TMC), signed an executive order aimed at accelerating the launch of deep sea mining in both U.S. and international waters. Days later, TMC, which is seeking to secure a contract to mine an area halfway between Hawai`i and Mexico, announced plans to bypass the United Nations’ deep sea regulator, the International Seabed Authority (ISA), by applying for a commercial license under the 1980 U.S. Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act (DSHMRA).
As the deep sea mining industry attempts to leverage Cold War-era legal loopholes to sidestep international law in pursuit of private gain, the report warns that U.S.-licensed deep sea mining in international waters could undermine decades of multilateral cooperation, ignite global legal conflict, inflame already tense international relations, and inflict irreversible damage on ocean ecosystems.
Major General (U.S. Army, Ret.) Randy Manner, in his foreword to the report, said: “The bedrock of national security is not simply weapons or minerals — it is global stability, rule of law, and ecological resilience. Mining the deep ocean in defiance of international consensus would degrade all three. It would erode U.S. credibility, fracture alliances, and set a dangerous precedent for unilateral resource exploitation.”
The battleground for all of this is the Pacific, a region that has already suffered extensive colonization and militarization at the hands of the global powers. Indigenous leaders, regional civil society organizations, and several Pacific states have called for a ban, moratorium, or precautionary pause on the practice.
Solomon P. Kaho’ohalahala, chair of the Pacific Island Heritage Coalition, said: “The Pacific is not a sacrifice zone. We will not stand by while a neocolonial deep sea land grab takes place that will harm our communities, disrupt our cultural connection to the ocean, and endanger our livelihoods. This July, ISA member States must make it clear where they stand — for their foundational principles of equity, multilateralism, and environmental protection or unbounded corporate greed.”
In March 2025, ISA Member States condemned TMC’s push to bypass the ISA and seek applications through the U.S. Today, ISA Member States wrapped up the first Council meeting since TMC submitted the world’s first-ever application to commercially mine the international seabed. Governments responded by pushing back and launching an investigation that could affect TMC’s subsidiaries, Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI) and Tonga Offshore Mining Limited (TOML). With this move, the international community shows that deep sea mining companies attempting to bypass international law will face consequences.
Hemphill added: “As the Trump Administration recklessly pushes the false solution of deep sea mining to address national security and defense concerns, the ISA and its Member States must hold the line. The ISA must halt exploitation licenses under its authority, and more Member States must voice or reiterate their support for a global moratorium to protect marine ecosystems, uphold international law, and preserve the legitimacy of multilateral ocean governance.”

overnor Kathy Hochul today announced the launch of a one-stop-shop for active duty servicemembers, veterans, and family members currently enrolled or interested in attending any SUNY college or university. The landing page: www.suny.edu/military, includes information on available credit for military service and experience, tuition assistance, specialized scholarships, and dedicated campus services like veteran lounges and associations for all 64 SUNY campuses. The website also connects veterans with services offered by the counties where each campus is located, helping them stay close to home and community, and will be regularly updated as new information becomes available.
“We continue to rely so much on our veterans and military to protect everything we hold sacred, and it is a priority of my administration to make sure we help our military-connected New Yorkers have a smooth transition to their next career,” Governor Hochul said. “This one-stop shop from SUNY is easy to follow and helps guide service members and their families and puts them on a path to a rewarding degree or credential.”
Governor Hochul has recently announced expanded access to an affordable education through the Veterans Tuition Assistance Program, which went into effect on July 1. Today, His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Ville de Québec completed the forward rearmament of Block II Harpoon Missiles while participating in Exercise TALISMAN SABRE 25 in Australia. The rearmament, conducted at the port of Darwin, Australia, was a joint Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Australian Defence Force effort, demonstrating the continued military interoperability between Canada and Australia.
This rearmament follows the forward rearmament of HMCS Vancouver in the port of Broome, Australia, in 2024, which was the first of its kind for a Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) ship outside of North America. The 2025 rearmament builds on important lessons learned from the inaugural iteration in 2024 and further develops an important logistical capability that ensures the CAF can be agile when deploying RCN ships to the Indo-Pacific region.
The rearmament took place ahead of, and immediately after, a live-fire missile shoot of a Block II Harpoon Missile during Exercise TALISMAN SABRE, where the missile engaged a ground-based target.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper joined 32 of his colleagues to introduce a resolution honoring Black Women’s Equal Pay Day.
“Black women face dual and compounding discrimination based upon both their race and gender,” wrote the lawmakers. “Lost wages mean Black women have less money to support themselves and their families, to save and invest for the future, and to spend on goods and services, causing businesses and the economy to suffer as a result.”
In the U.S., Black women workers are paid just 66 cents for every dollar paid to non-Hispanic White men. The wage gap has only narrowed by 5 cents in the last two decades. If current trends continue, Black women wouldn’t achieve equal pay for over 200 years.

Today, the Honourable David McGuinty, Minister of National Defence, participated in the 29th Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) meeting, hosted by the United Kingdom and Germany. The meeting was held virtually and brought together representatives from more than 50 countries.
During the meeting, Minister McGuinty announced that Canada will be donating an additional $20 million to support the Leopard 2 Maintenance and Repair facility in Poland. This donation comes from the Government of Canada’s 2025-26 investment for military assistance to Ukraine.
Minister McGuinty also reaffirmed that Canada is providing an additional $2 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, highlighting Prime Minister Carney’s announcement last month at the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit. This brings Canada’s total commitment of military assistance to $6.5 billion since February 2022.
The Minister also noted that the delivery of Armoured Combat Support Vehicles to the Polish logistics hub will begin in August 2025. Training is underway and the delivery of all 50 vehicles will be completed before the end of this year.
Canada continues to work closely with Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with the comprehensive military aid that it needs as quickly as possible.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Wyoming Veterans Commission invites Purple Heart recipients, their families, fellow veterans, service members, and the public to attend the 2025 Purple Heart Day Proclamation Signing Ceremony on July 28, 2025, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Every Purple Heart tells a story, a moment when courage overcame fear when sacrifice triumphed over self-preservation. From Soldiers wounded in far-off combat zones to those who never returned home, this decoration represents the cost of freedom. And for Wyoming families, those stories are deeply personal.
Created by General George Washington in 1782 as the “Badge of Military Merit,” the Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Today, it is awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving their country in combat.
“Purple Heart Day,” recognized in Wyoming on August 7 each year by state statute, is more than a date on the calendar. It is a sacred reminder of the service and sacrifice made by brave men and women—including many from our own communities—who have earned this distinguished honor, according to the Veterans Commission.
The July 28 proclamation signing will feature remarks from state and military leaders, personal reflections from veterans and families, and a reading of the official proclamation. Attendees are encouraged to listen, learn, and honor the stories of those who have sacrificed so much.
“This day allows us to pause, reflect and say thank you,” said Tim Sheppard, Executive Director of the Wyoming Veterans Commission. “By attending, you’re helping carry the memory and meaning of their sacrifice forward. We encourage all to join us in honoring our Purple Heart heroes.”

When you think of barnacles, you likely picture shell-like creatures stuck to the sides of boats or docks, or even whales. However, did you know that some of the barnacles that attach to other animals are not just hitching a ride — they actually hijack their host?
“Instead of gluing themselves to a rock or something, they glue themselves to a host, often a crab, and they inject themselves into that host, and live their entire life as a root network growing through their host. It’s almost like a fungal network or plant root system. They have no real body in the way that we think of animal bodies,” says UConn Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Assistant Professor James Bernot.
Bernot and his colleagues – including lead author Niklas Dreyer from the Natural History Museum of Denmark and Biodiversity Research Center Academia Sinica, Taiwan; Jørgen Olesen at the Natural History Museum of Denmark; Gregory Kolbasov at Moscow University; Jens Høeg at the University of Copenhagen; and Ryuji Machida and Benny Chan at the Biodiversity Research Center Academia Sinica, Taiwan – published their research on a mysterious group of crustaceans in Current Biology (LINK) to hopefully solve an enduring puzzle about these strange creatures.
Bernot explains that barnacles are crustaceans, like crabs or shrimp, and they have evolved unique strategies for survival. For example, they go from a free-swimming larval form to live the rest of their lives permanently attached to their substrate of choice.
A particularly enigmatic group called “y-larvae,” also known as Facetotecta, resembles young barnacles. Y-larvae have been studied in plankton samples since the 1800s, but Bernot says the real mystery is figuring out what they grow up to be—so far, the adult stage has never been seen. Though that element remains unanswered, in this new paper, the researchers are getting closer to finding out.
To look for clues on how y-larvae fit into the tree of life, the researchers collected more than 3,000 of the tiny crustaceans and analyzed their genes. They did this by sequencing the transcriptome, which is similar to a genome but represents the RNA that is expressed.
“We were finally able to confirm, in the realm of big data science, that they are, in fact, related to barnacles, but they aren’t closely related to any of the other parasitic barnacles. This was interesting to test by building a giant tree of life for all the crustaceans, then adding this little branch of y-larvae , this very unknown group, to that bigger tree, and we saw that they are related to barnacles, but more as distant cousins,” says Bernot.
Though not closely related to parasitic barnacles, these crustaceans are also likely parasitic because they have some structures in common with their parasitic cousins, says Bernot, including antennae with claws that may be used to hook onto their host.
“One of the best pieces of evidence we have that y-larvae become parasitic is that if we expose them to crustacean growth hormone, they will hatch out of their little swimming larval shape into a small slug-like body, which is similar to what parasitic barnacles do when they enter a host,” says Bernot. “The fact that if we give them hormones, they also molt into a slug-like thing, suggests they go on to be parasitic somewhere, but we still don’t know what host they end up in. Being hidden inside another animal’s body could explain why we haven’t found the adult stage of y-larvae yet.”
Although these crustaceans are unusual and largely unknown with only 17 species described so far, Bernot says some of his co-authors found more than 100 new and different species from a single harbor in Japan. There is more to learn about these enigmatic animals.
“We know the other parasitic barnacles do weird things. The ones that grow like roots inside of crabs castrate their hosts, so their hosts are no longer able to reproduce. They trick their hosts into thinking that the host is pregnant, so it starts taking care of this mass that grows outside of its body, but that mass is part of the barnacle and not actually the eggs of the host, and even if they infect a male crab, the male crab becomes feminized and starts behaving like a pregnant female crab. Y-larvae could be having similarly impactful roles in ecosystems, but we won’t know until we find what hosts they are living in and what they are doing there,” says Bernot.
Since the y-larvae transcriptome sequencing showed they were not closely related to parasitic barnacles, Bernot says that it is likely that y-larvae and parasitic barnacles evolved in a process called convergent evolution.
“Because they’re probably both parasitic and doing similar things, they’ve evolved similar strategies to attach to a host and to become this slug-like larva. It’s amazing to think that that really weird, unique lifestyle evolved multiple times.”
Different species of barnacles use different strategies when they become sessile adults. Besides living on inanimate objects, those that live on animals like whales are not considered parasitic because they are essentially hitching a ride and do not feed on their host. Others attach to the host and have structures that they use to feed on the host. Understanding the evolution of these different strategies is important, and Bernot says that a project they are currently working on involves building the evolutionary tree of all barnacles to observe and understand some of the evolutionary patterns.
“A big question is, what is it about barnacles that has given them so much variability over evolutionary time to take on so many different shapes and forms and lifestyles? They have come up with incredibly ingenious strategies for making their ways of life, and often their ways of life seem very bizarre to us, but they have clearly been very successful,” says Bernot. “These animals have been around for hundreds of millions of years and there are several thousand species of them, so they have come up with some really amazing solutions to complex problems.”
Some of those solutions could also help humans. For example, Bernot says, there is a lot of interest in trying to better understand barnacle glues.
“They glue themselves to docks, they glue themselves to boats, and that is a problem. The Navy spends millions of dollars on additional fuel because barnacles on their ships cause additional drag. Also having more powerful glues that can dry underwater would be very useful for mechanical reasons, but maybe also for dentistry and things like that,” says Bernot. “There could be a lot of applications if we can better understand some of these amazing solutions that barnacles have evolved.”

At least 19 people were killed and 164 injured when a Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a college and school campus in Dhaka on Monday. The aircraft experienced a technical problem shortly after take-off, a military spokesperson confirmed.
The F-7 BGI jet took off at 1:06 p.m. local time (0706 GMT) from the Bangladesh Air Force base in Kurmitola, Dhaka, as part of a routine training mission. It encountered a mechanical failure soon after take-off, said military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sami Ud Dowla Chowdhury.
“The pilot made a valiant attempt to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas. Despite his best efforts, the aircraft crashed into a two-storey building belonging to Milestone School and College,” he stated.
The pilot was among those killed in the crash. The Bangladesh military has formed a committee to investigate the cause of the incident.

Speaking to Defence Ministers who joined for the meeting, the Secretary General highlighted the initiative that he and US President Donald J Trump announced last week to boost support for Ukraine by opening additional US assets to Ukraine through investment by Allies in Europe and Canada. This new initiative is open-ended and has already seen numerous Allies express interest in contributing. It complements a range of other initiatives through which Allies support Ukraine and provides new access to US equipment and technology that Ukraine has requested for urgent delivery. This voluntary effort will be coordinated by NATO, given the experience and infrastructure the Alliance provides, including through its command in Wiesbaden, Germany – NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) – that is already coordinating support for Ukraine and has logistical hubs in the eastern part of the Alliance. The UDCG will also continue to play a vital role.
This initiative and others bring together the three key decisions made by leaders at the NATO Summit in The Hague just a few weeks ago: increasing defence investment, ramping up defence production, and supporting Ukraine. Russian forces launched an overnight group strike on Ukraine’s military-industrial complex and the infrastructure of military airfields, the Russian Defense Ministry said Monday.
The raid involved long-range high-precision weapons launched from air, land and sea-based platforms, including “Kinzhal” air-launched hypersonic ballistic missiles and combat drones, the ministry said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Russia’s air defense intercepted 74 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 23 in the Moscow Region, it added.
Airports in Moscow introduced air restrictions in the early hours of Monday for flight safety reasons, which were subsequently lifted, according to Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency.
Downed drone debris caused a fire on the roof of the railway station in the village of Kamenolomni in the Rostov Region, and more than 50 trains were delayed, said Russian Railways.

At least 19 people, mostly students, were killed as a training aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force crashed on the campus of a college on Monday.
A government statement said that over 100 people were injured in the accident. Many of the injured are in critical condition.

A fragile ceasefire was put in place in southern Syria on July 19, 2025, after days of violence between Druze militias and Bedouin tribes that drew in government forces and prompted Israeli strikes on the capital, Damascus, as a warning to pull back from Druze areas. The United States helped broker the latest agreement, fearing a spillover of violence to other parts of Syria.
The conflict’s quick escalation brings to the fore multiple layers of politics and identity in the region – particularly among the Druze, who form an important minority in several countries and make up about 2% of Israel’s population. As a historian of the Middle East, I have researched Druze cross-border communal ties and followed closely their predicaments since the start of the Syrian civil war in March 2011.
The Druze are a monotheistic religious community that split from a branch of Shiite Islam in the 11th century. Today, they live mainly in three countries: Lebanon, Syria and Israel, with a small presence in northern Jordan.
Despite their geographical dispersion, they have managed to retain a strong sense of communal identity. One of the most important creeds of their faith is “protection of brothers of the faith.”
Another article of faith that helps to buttress shared communal solidarity is belief in reincarnation: that with physical death, the soul is transferred to the body of a newly born Druze.
Although Druze history shows that the community is not always united, the belief in and practice of cross-border solidarity is very strong. According to their popular saying, “the Druze are like a copper tray. Wherever you hit it, the whole tray reverberates.”
After World War I, the creation of the modern states in the Middle East divided the Druze community between Syria, Lebanon and the British mandate of Palestine, which is now Israel.
In Israel, they have largely integrated into the Jewish state. Like Jewish citizens, Druze men are required to serve in the military, and many have attained leadership positions in the security sector and politics.
A popular cliché has developed about their “blood oath” with the Jewish state. In a July 15 statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz cited Israel’s “deep covenant of blood with our Druze citizens” and their connections to Druze in Syria.
Their integration has been marred by discrimination, a prime example of which is the 2018 law that defines Israel as the nation-state for Jews. Still, many retain a strong sense of Israeli identity that sets them apart from Arab Palestinian citizens of Israel.
An additional Druze community lives in the Golan Heights, territory that Israel seized from Syria in 1967 and has occupied since. Most Druze there declined to receive Israeli citizenship, and remained loyal to Syria until the outbreak of the civil war there. Since then, there has been a notable change in their relationship with Israel, marked by increased numbers who have acquired Israeli citizenship.
Druze communities elsewhere in the region have also adopted aspects of their countries’ culture, including Arab nationalism and Syrian or Lebanese national sentiments. Still, cross-border solidarity among Druze has remained strong – and often resurfaced in times of crisis.
When the Syrian civil war erupted in March 2011, Syrian Druze were targeted at times by both the Assad regime, which pressured them to support it, and by Islamist rebel groups that regarded them as infidels. The Druze straddled a fine line throughout the war, seeking, not always successfully, to be left on their own.
In 2015, that tension came to a boiling point. Druze regions throughout Syria became sites of military confrontations, involving Druze militias, the Syrian army and opposition fighters.
Israeli Druze organized mass rallies in support of their brothers in Syria and called on the Israeli government to intervene. Israel, in turn, protected Syrian Druze villages close to its border with Syria in the Golan Heights. The Israeli government covertly supported Druze areas deeper in Syria, and sent clear messages to combatants on all sides not to harm the Druze.
Since the fall of the Assad regime in Damascus in December 2024, Ahmad al-Sharaa, the new Syrian leader, has attempted to bring divided and ruined Syria together under his authority.
However, religious and ethnic minorities have been highly suspicious of the new government. Many of its members hail from al-Sharaa’s own militia during the civil war, Hayat Tahrir al Sham, which targeted religious minorities and enforced its own interpretation of Islam on the population under its control.
The most recent violence took place in Mount Druze, a region in Sweida province that is home to most of the community in Syria. It was sparked by an incident where a local Bedouin band robbed and killed a Druze man. The incident quickly became a catalyst for major fighting between Druze, Bedouins and dispatched units of the Syrian army.
State security forces tried to impose their authority, but in the process killed scores of Druze. They also violated Druze cultural norms by filming the forced shaving of Druze men’s mustaches, including respected religious men, and posting the clips on social media. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 1,100 people have been killed in the fighting.
The fragile agreement that the Sweida Druze signed with the new government in May, as part of the government’s efforts to solidify authority over the divided country, collapsed following these incidents.
Befitting the saying about the reverberation of the copper tray, Israeli Druze immediately mobilized, joined by Druze in the Golan Heights. Hundreds crossed the border to Syria. Many called on the government in Jerusalem to intervene, though others were opposed.
On July 16, the Israeli military targeted the Syrian army by striking Damascus – sending a clear threat to al-Sharaa. Israel also struck military targets in southern Syria.
Later that day, the Syrian government reached a ceasefire agreement with the Druze in Sweida, which collapsed soon after. On July 19, following more fighting and violence – and mediation by the United States, Turkey and Jordan – a new ceasefire was put in place, though new fighting has been reported.
Even before these recent incidents, Israel became a key player in post-Assad Syria by occupying areas close to their shared border. Now, Israel has deepened its involvement by defending the Druze population in the country – as many Israeli Druze had hoped it would since the start of the civil war in 2011.
Apart from supporting the Druze, Israel’s military actions are also tied to its efforts to project power amid the tectonic shifts in the Middle East since the Hamas attacks on Oct. 7, 2023. In Syria, it seeks to guarantee its influence on the reshaping of the country after civil war. Domestically, Netanyahu is interested in prolonging Israel’s state of emergency, as it extends the survival of his far-right and unpopular government. Syria provides him with another front to maintain this state of emergency.
For many Israeli Druze, meanwhile, this still-unfolding episode constitutes another example in their history of seeking to protect their brothers in faith. Among Druze in the Middle East, they are uniquely positioned, with many serving in the region’s most powerful military.
On July 19, Israel’s public broadcaster, Kan news, reported that 2,000 Israeli Druze, including reserve soldiers, signed a petition that said: “we are getting ready to volunteer to fight alongside our brothers in Sweida. It is our time to defend our brothers, our land and our religion.”

JERUSALEM/SANA, July 21 (Xinhua) — Israel has attacked Houthi military targets in the port of Hodeida in northwestern Yemen, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Monday.
The Israeli Air Force reportedly struck military targets, including engineering equipment, fuel containers and ships used in military operations against Israel, as well as ships in port waters.

Hundreds of Bedouin civilians were evacuated from Syria’s predominantly Druze city of Sweida on Monday as part of a U.S.-backed truce meant to end fighting that has killed hundreds of people, state media and witnesses said.
With hundreds reported killed, the violence in the southern province of Sweida has posed a major test for interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, drawing Israeli airstrikes last week and deepening fissures in a country fractured by 14 years of war.
A ceasefire took hold on Sunday as interior ministry security forces deployed on Sweida’s outskirts. Interior Minister Anas Khattab said on Sunday the truce would allow for the release of hostages and detainees held by the warring sides.
On Monday morning, ambulances, trucks and buses ferried hundreds of Bedouin civilians including women, children and wounded people out of Sweida to nearby displacement camps, Reuters footage showed.
The initial batch included some 300 Bedouins, and a second group of about 550 civilians will be evacuated within the next 24 hours if the situation remains calm, said Shoaib Asfour, a member of the Syrian security forces overseeing the evacuation.
The next phase would see the evacuation of Bedouin fighters detained by Druze militias and the transfer of bodies of Bedouins killed in the fighting, Asfour said.
Syria’s state news agency said a total of 1,500 Bedouins would be evacuated from Sweida city.
Citing Ahmed al-Dalati, head of Syria’s internal security forces in Sweida, state media said those forces would also facilitate the return to Sweida of others displaced from it.
According to the United Nations, at least 93,000 people have been uprooted by the fighting – most of them within Sweida province but others to Daraa province to the west, or north to the countryside around the capital Damascus.
The U.N. said on Sunday that humanitarian convoys with medical supplies had been waiting to enter Sweida for two days but were not granted access. It said only a convoy of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent had been allowed to enter.
PRESSURES ON SYRIA’S MOSAIC
The Druze are a small but influential minority in Syria, Israel and Lebanon who follow a religion that is an offshoot of a branch of Islam. Some ultra-conservative Sunni Muslims deem Druze beliefs to be heretical.
Citing the goal of protecting the Druze and keeping southern Syria demilitarized, Israel attacked government forces last week in the south and struck the defence ministry in Damascus.
Washington, which has expressed support for Damascus since Sharaa met U.S. President Donald Trump in May, said it did not approve of Israel’s strikes.
U.S. envoy Tom Barrack said on Monday the Syrian government needed to be held accountable. “They also need to be given the responsibility that they’re there to do,” he said, speaking on a visit to Beirut.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz defended Israel’s attacks on government targets, saying they were “the only way to stop the massacre of Druze in Syria”.
The fighting began a week ago with clashes between Bedouin and Druze fighters. Damascus sent troops to quell the fighting, but they were drawn into the violence and accused of widespread violations against the Druze.
Residents of Sweida said friends and neighbours were shot at close range in their homes or in the streets by Syrian troops, identified by their fatigues and insignia.
Luna Albassit, a Druze activist in the town of Shahba in Sweida province, said the situation after so much bloodshed remained tense despite the end to clashes late on Sunday.
“People were killed in the streets, in their homes, they were humiliated and it was in the name of the state,” she said.
Hamzah Mustafa, Syria’s information minister, told Reuters last week that the Damascus government strongly condemned all abuses and rejected sectarian violence in all its forms.
Interim President al-Sharaa has promised to protect the rights of Druze and hold to account those who committed violations against “our Druze people”.
He has blamed the violence on “outlaw groups”.
After Israel bombed Syrian government forces in Sweida and hit the defence ministry in Damascus last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded the demilitarisation of southern Syrian territory near the border, stretching from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights to the Druze Mountain, east of Sweida.
He also said Israel would protect the Druze.

The Israeli military has confirmed that it struck targets at the port of Hodeidah in Yemen, claiming the facilities were being used by the Houthi movement for military purposes. Colonel Avichay Adraee, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), said in a post on X that the operation targeted infrastructure belonging to what he described as the “terrorist Houthi regime.”
According to Adraee, the strikes destroyed engineering equipment used to rebuild port facilities, fuel barrels, and naval components allegedly involved in military activity against Israel and shipping vessels in the surrounding maritime area. He asserted that the port has been previously used to transfer combat materials from Iran to the Houthis, which are then deployed in attacks on Israel and its allies.
The IDF said it had been monitoring renewed Houthi activity at the port and launched the strike in response to attempts to reconstruct what it called terrorist infrastructure. It further accused the Houthi movement of using civilian infrastructure for military operations targeting international commercial shipping.
The Israeli military stated it would continue to act against what it views as ongoing threats from the Houthis and reiterated its commitment to striking hostile targets regardless of their distance from Israeli territory.
Reports also indicate that Israeli forces have launched a combined ground and air offensive on Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, marking the first ground operation in the city since the outbreak of the conflict with Hamas 21 months ago.

More than £150 million worth of air defence and artillery has been delivered to Ukraine in the last two months, as procurement of hundreds of air defence missiles and thousands of rounds of artillery to provide to Ukraine ramps up.
At least £700 million of this support is set to be spent this year on air defence and artillery ammunition including the £150 million already delivered – with other funding going towards procuring more drones, as well as critical contracts to maintain and repair UK weapons already provided to Ukraine, allowing damaged equipment to return to the frontline as quickly as possible.
With Putin repeatedly targeting Ukraine’s cities in recent weeks with the most intense aerial bombardment since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the UK is joining the US and European nations in ramping up deliveries of vital air defence.
The UK signed an agreement with Ukraine in May to provide an additional £2.26 billion worth of military support that will be repaid using funds raised from immobilised Russian assets, with more than two-thirds of the money allocated for procurement of weapons and munitions in just two months.
The deal delivers on this Government’s Plan for Change, by spending more on defence and creating jobs we will keep the country safe and boost economic growth.
The Defence Secretary will make the announcement at the 29th meeting of the 50-nation strong Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG) which he will chair virtually on Monday alongside German Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius.
Last week, President Trump announced a new plan for large scale NATO weapons transfers and committed to getting these “quickly distributed to the battlefield”.

Alongside this, the US has started the clock on a 50-day deadline for Putin to agree to peace or face crippling economic sanctions.
As members of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, we need to step up in turn with a “50-day drive” to arm Ukraine on the battlefield and force Putin to the negotiating table.
It comes as the UK also completed delivery of nearly 50,000 military drones to Ukraine in under six months, in addition to 20,000 drones provided in the same period via the UK-Latvia co-led drone coalition, working closely with British defence companies to speed up procurement and delivery. The UK has committed £350 million this year to increase the supply of drones from 10,000 in 2024 to 100,000 in 2025.
At the meeting, the UK and Germany will announce a new agreement to partner in providing critical air defence ammunition to Ukraine. Germany will provide more than 170 million Euros worth of funding, which the UK will use to rapidly procure air defence ammunition via the UK-led International Fund for Ukraine for delivery in the coming months. This supports the aims of the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Capability Coalition, co-led by Germany and France.
The UK’s military support for Ukraine this year is more than ever before, with £4.5 billion allocated for this financial year. In March, the Prime Minister announced a historic £1.6 billion deal to provide more than five thousand air defence missiles for Ukraine.
Last month, the Prime Minister announced a landmark agreement between the UK and Ukraine to share battlefield technology, boosting Ukraine’s drone production and linking up the UK’s defence industry with the cutting-edge technology being developed on the front lines in Ukraine.

A lifelong baseball fan, Catherine Staggs set out with her family to visit all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums across the United States. That love of the game eventually led them to settle in Houston about eight years ago – a choice that helped lead Staggs to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where she is a contracting officer for the agency’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. Through CLPS, she helps manage the contracts with commercial companies delivering science and technology to the Moon. These efforts support NASA’s Artemis campaign and lay the groundwork for continuous human presence on the lunar surface.
She joined NASA as a civil servant in 2018, but Staggs’ career in the federal government stretches back to her college days. She completed an accounting co-op with the Department of Defense as a student at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina, and secured a full-time accounting position with the agency following her graduation. She transitioned to a business financial manager position supporting U.S. Marine Corps projects while earning an MBA from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. “That position is where I started to dabble in contracting,” she said.
Staggs moved to Texas in 2014 to be closer to her boyfriend – now husband – who was stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen. She was hired as a contract compliance manager for a small, Killeen-based business that specialized in government contracts, officially launching her career in contracting. When Staggs’ husband retired from the Army, the couple decided to move to Houston because they loved to watch the Houston Astros play ball. Staggs continued working for the contracting company from her new home but missed meeting new people and collaborating with colleagues in person.
“I applied for a contract specialist job with NASA to get back into the office, and the rest is history,” she said.
Her current role at Johnson involves managing the administrative contract functions for the 13 base contracts that support CLPS, which are valued at $2.6 billion. She is also the contracting officer for Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission-3 and helps to train and develop up-and-coming contract specialists. “I love to see the development each contract specialist has over their career,” she said. “My first Pathways intern is now working full-time for NASA as a contract specialist, and they are working to become a limited warrant contracting officer.”
Her training experience provides valuable perspective on new team members. “Everyone starts at the bottom, not knowing what they don’t know,” she said. “We all have a beginning, and we need to remember that as we welcome new employees.”
Staggs said that navigating change has at times been difficult in her career, but she strives to remain flexible and open to adjusting work and life to meet the needs of the mission. “My time at NASA has helped develop my leadership skills through confidence in myself and my team,” she said.
She looks forward to mentoring the Artemis Generation and sharing her contracting knowledge with new team members. She also anticipates crossing more baseball stadiums off her family’s list this summer.

Thailand has accused Cambodia of recently placing landmines in a disputed border area after three soldiers were injured, but Phnom Penh said they had veered off agreed patrol routes and triggered a mine left behind from decades of war.
Thai authorities made the claim after three soldiers were injured, with one losing a foot, by a landmine explosion while on a routine patrol on July 16 on the Thai side of the disputed border area between Ubon Ratchathani and Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province.
Cambodia’s Defence Ministry denied that new mines had been planted, saying in a statement on Sunday the soldiers had strayed from agreed patrol routes into areas that contain unexploded landmines. The country is littered with landmines laid during decades of war.
Thailand’s army said on Monday that 10 freshly laid Russian-made PMN-2 type landmines, which are not used or stockpiled by Thailand, were found between July 18 and July 20 in areas near where the soldiers were injured.
“This is a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Thailand and an outright breach of principles that are fundamental to international law,” Maratee Nalita Andamo, deputy spokesperson for the Thai Foreign Ministry, said on Monday in Bangkok.
Data from the Cambodia Mine Action Centre, which estimates there are still 4 to 6 million landmines scattered across the country, shows five people were killed and a dozen injured by mines and unexploded ordnance in Cambodia in the first four months of 2025.
The area where the mine exploded is near where a Cambodian soldier was killed in May after a brief exchange of gunfire between troops on both sides.
The incident has flared into a broader diplomatic dispute between the Southeast Asian neighbours that has destabilised the Thai government and seen the Prime Minister suspended from office.
Thailand said it will issue a formal condemnation and call for accountability from Cambodia for breaching the anti-landmine convention under the Ottawa Treaty, and the army will also increase vigilance during border patrols.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 PM on Monday following uproar by Opposition MPs demanding a discussion on the recent Pahalgam terror attack and the government’s response through Operation Sindoor.
The House convened at 11 AM but was first adjourned until noon after Opposition members disrupted proceedings, insisting on a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the developments surrounding the attack and Operation Sindoor.
Expressing his disappointment at the disruptions, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla appealed to members to maintain decorum and allow discussions to proceed.
“This is the Question Hour, and the government is willing to discuss every issue. The House should function, and discussions must take place as per the rules and procedures,” Birla said.
Despite his appeal, continued sloganeering by Opposition members forced the Speaker to adjourn the House again until 2 PM.
When the House reconvened, protests resumed after the officiating Speaker informed members that Speaker Om Birla had not granted assent to any of the adjournment motions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue, “The government is completely ready for discussion on any issue.”
Responding to the ongoing disruptions, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “A meeting of the Business Advisory Committee will be held at 2:30 PM to finalise the agenda for discussion. The government is ready, but they (Opposition MPs) are protesting in the Well of the House. This is not the right way to begin the Monsoon Session.”
Following the adjournment, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, expressed concern over being denied the opportunity to speak, “The question is – why is the Defence Minister allowed to speak in the House while Opposition members, including me as LoP, are not? This is a new approach. Conventionally, if ministers can speak, the Opposition should also be allowed.”
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoed the sentiment, stating, “If the government is truly ready for discussion, then they should let the Leader of the Opposition speak. He stood up to speak, and he should be allowed to do so.”
Meanwhile, BJP MP Baijayant Panda tabled the Report of the Select Committee on the Income Tax Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha. The report contains 285 recommendations aimed at overhauling the existing six-decade-old legislation.
The Monsoon session will run until August 21, with a break scheduled between August 12 and August 18. A total of 21 sittings are planned over the 32-day period.
