    Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday launched a month-long door-to-door cleanliness campaign from Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) Kashmiri Gate, aiming to improve sanitation and workplace conditions across the national Capital.

    The campaign will be conducted across all districts of Delhi and involve active participation from government officials, civic agencies, and local communities.

    Leading by example, the Chief Minister personally took part in the cleanliness drive by sweeping the premises at the ISBT, where she also inspected the condition of the offices and public facilities.

    Expressing concern over the deteriorating infrastructure and unhygienic conditions at government offices, CM Gupta said, “If our officers are working in such conditions, how will they benefit anyone? Water is dripping from here, and this is where an officer’s chair is placed. This is the kind of furniture provided, where people are expected to sit and work.”

    While inspecting the ISBT office area, the Chief Minister was visibly dissatisfied with the poor maintenance and lack of basic facilities, calling for immediate structural reforms and better upkeep of public infrastructure.

    In a significant announcement during the campaign launch, CM Gupta said the capital urgently requires a new secretariat building.

    “Delhi needs a new Secretariat. From today itself, we will begin identifying suitable locations so that all departments can operate from a single place,” she stated.

    The month-long campaign will focus not only on residential and commercial areas but also on government buildings, transport hubs, and public service offices, aiming to set a new standard for urban cleanliness in the national Capital.

    The Chief Minister urged citizens and officials alike to treat cleanliness as a shared responsibility. The initiative is being coordinated with municipal bodies and is expected to involve schoolchildren, non-government organisations, resident welfare associations, and volunteers in the coming weeks.

    UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) — China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang on Thursday rejected U.S. accusations against China over its role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

    At a Security Council meeting on Ukraine, a US envoy accused China of being the “most important supplier” to Russia’s military efforts.

    In response, the Chinese diplomat rejected the false and slanderous statements against China by the United States as absolutely unacceptable.

    China did not create the Ukrainian crisis and is not a party to it. China has never supplied lethal weapons to either side in the conflict and strictly controls the export of dual-use goods, including drones, Geng Shuang said.

    “The parties to the conflict are not under sanctions by the Security Council. China maintains normal trade relations with Russia and Ukraine. In doing so, it does not violate international law or its international obligations. China’s legitimate rights and interests should not be infringed upon,” the deputy permanent representative said. “In fact, the United States has still maintained trade with Russia. If the United States itself does this, why does it not allow others to do the same?” he added.

    The Ukrainian crisis is at a critical stage, and there is hope for a political solution. The United States cannot, on the one hand, expect China to play its role in ending the conflict as soon as possible, and on the other hand, continue to denigrate China and put pressure on it, Geng Shuang said.

    China once again calls on the United States to stop playing meaningless blame games, stop shifting responsibility to others, and play a constructive role in ending the fighting and advancing peace talks, the diplomat said.

    Resolving the Ukrainian crisis requires unity and cooperation, not division and confrontation, the deputy permanent representative added.

    Speaking about arms supplies to Ukraine, Geng Shuang expressed concern about the expanding variety and range of weapons entering the battlefield, as well as their growing lethality and destructive power.

    Reckless transfers of weapons to the battlefield will only escalate the confrontation, prolong the conflict, create risks of its spread and lead to further casualties and suffering for the populations of both sides and the entire region, he warned.

    The first priority for Russia and Ukraine is to work together to de-escalate the situation on the battlefield as quickly as possible. They must maintain the momentum of the talks, continue to seek consensus, and ultimately reach a comprehensive, lasting and binding peace agreement, the diplomat said.

    Since the first day of the conflict, China has advocated peaceful resolution of disputes and called on the parties to the conflict to stop hostilities, start negotiations and restore peace as soon as possible, Geng Shuang said, adding that China will continue to cooperate with the international community to play a constructive role in an early political settlement of the crisis. –0–

    Chancellor backs jobs boost in Scottish defence and energy sectors

    Chancellor Rachel Reeves will outline how the Spending Review will give Scotland a jobs boost, as she visits RAF Lossiemouth and St Fergus Gas Plant today (1 August).

    • 18,000 North Sea jobs can be safeguarded through a £200 million investment in the Aberdeen Acorn energy project whilst creating 15,000 new ones in Scotland’s clean energy transformation.
    • Increase in defence spending will see more jobs added to the 26,100 skilled Scottish jobs already supported by UK Government defence investment, and three new E-7 Wedgetail aircraft will see even more jobs created by Boeing at RAF Lossiemouth.
    • Defence and clean energy commitments, part of the UK Government’s Plan for Change, will provide jobs and build thriving communities from Aberdeen to the Clyde.

    The UK Government is investing in defence and clean energy to protect existing jobs and create thousands more, while keep the UK secure. Increasing defence spending to 2.6%, could lead to around 0.3% higher GDP in the long run, equivalent to around £11 billion of GDP in today’s money, according to government estimates.

    RAF Lossiemouth shows how investment in defence delivers for ordinary families. The Moray base has undergone a huge transformation in recent years and military personnel and civilian workers now work together keep our fighter jets and sub-hunting aircraft in the air.  The addition of three new E-7 Wedgetail aircraft to the RAF’s fleet will see even more jobs created by Boeing at the base, where the Chancellor will meet with some of the over 200 Boeing teammates who work alongside RAF personnel.

    The Chancellor’s visit comes as defence spending rises to 2.6% of GDP and figures from 23/24 reveal that MOD spend maintains 26,100 skilled jobs across Scotland. The Spending Review also committed £250 million to secure the future of HMNB Clyde – the first stage of a multi-decade, multi-billion renewal project and all three Clyde shipyards are currently fulfilling contracts for the Royal Navy.

  • Govt launches ‘Apna Ghar’ resting facilities for truck drivers across highways

    In a move to enhance the safety and well-being of truck drivers during long-haul journeys, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has launched an ambitious initiative called ‘Apna Ghar’. The programme aims to provide comfortable and hygienic resting spaces for truckers across major highways in the country.

    As of July 1, 2025, a total of 368 ‘Apna Ghar’ units with 4,611 beds have been set up by Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) at retail fuel outlets along national and state highways. These facilities offer a range of services including dormitory accommodations, restaurants or dhabas, clean toilets, dedicated bathing areas, self-cooking spaces, and access to purified drinking water — all designed to improve the quality of life for truck drivers on the road.

    The initiative has seen a positive response from the trucking community, with a growing number of bookings, app downloads, and user registrations on the dedicated ‘Apna Ghar’ mobile application. Feedback collected from users reflects widespread appreciation for the comfort and convenience these resting spaces provide.

    The information was shared by Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. He said that the initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to support the country’s trucking workforce and to ensure better infrastructure and working conditions for those who keep India’s supply chains running.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Completed Armley Gyratory footbridges improving vital routes for walking and cycling

    Armley Gyratory’s three brand new replacement footbridges are now fully opened, as part of a multi-million-pound scheme to offer improved routes for pedestrians and cyclists, negotiating one of Leeds busiest junctions.

    The replacement footbridges over Wellington Road (A58), Spence Lane and Gelderd Road; are part of wider works, worth more than £41.96 million project around the Armley Gyratory, which is funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority via the West Yorkshire Plus Transport fund.

    The improved infrastructure provides vital links to connect communities like Wortley and Holbeck to the city centre, with more accessible footways and bridges.

    Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, and ward councillors Paul Wray and Annie Maloney were joined by representatives from the Combined Authority, construction partners Balfour Beatty and the project team to officially open the routes. 

    Work started in January 2024 to demolish the existing footbridges, which were of a poor standard and approaching life expiry and replace them with more accessible structures. They follow highways works to the main gyratory which were completed in winter 2023. During construction, the project team have worked through challenging conditions and managed to keep travel disruption to a minimum.

    Overall, the improvements to the Armley Gyratory provide pedestrians and cyclists with more appealing and accessible routes, increased safety for all road users, improved traffic flow and less congestion. More than 660 trees have been planted around the gyratory and in the local community, alongside new landscaping, which has further enhanced the biodiversity of the area.

    The changes to the gyratory have increased vehicle capacity and helped to alleviate congestion at the junction. They are part of transformative highways works to remove through traffic across the city centre, mitigate environmental issues, better connect neighbourhoods, and encourage people to travel on foot or by bike.

    These are all part of the Connecting Leeds transport strategy to transform travel throughout Leeds, setting out the council’s vision for a city where you don’t need to use a car, where everyone has an affordable zero carbon choice in how they travel.

    Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, said:

    “We’re delighted to see Armley Gyratory footbridges fully opened to residents again, across this important scheme to transform travel on a key piece of the city’s infrastructure. I’m pleased to see this scheme has completed during some challenging conditions, all while maintaining an essential route and keeping traffic flowing around the city.

    “Throughout the project, there’s also been significant contributions to the local economy. For example, contractors have mainly employed local people, supported 218 weeks of apprenticeships and the site team have volunteered 130 hours in the local community. There has been over 100 hours of schools’ engagement and over 60 hours of help to support the under 24s into work. This has been a fantastic effort and investment in our local communities. And it’s great to also see almost 100% of waste diverted from landfill, with 620 tonnes of CO2 saved on the project. 

    “We would like to thank everyone involved in working on this scheme, along with people’s ongoing patience, while this essential project was carried out. Although it’s great to see this project complete, we’re conscious that there’s still a lot of other work taking place around the city and we are working hard to deliver these as swiftly as possible while minimising disruption wherever we can.”

    Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said:

    “These improvements will increase accessibility and make it easier and safer to walk and cycle on one of the city’s busiest routes.

    “It’s great to have delivered such an important project together as we continue to build a better-connected region for everyone.”

    The Election Commission of India has announced that the election to choose the next Vice President of India will be held on September 9, with counting of votes to take place the same day.

    According to the schedule released on Friday, August 21 is the last date for filing nominations, while the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is August 25.

    The post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, citing health concerns.

    “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” read Dhankhar’s resignation letter.

    On Thursday, the Election Commission confirmed that it has completed the preparation and finalised the Electoral College list for the 2025 Vice-Presidential election. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Commission stated that the list has been organised in alphabetical order based on the States and Union Territories of the respective Members of Parliament.

    The Vice President of India is elected by an Electoral College comprising members of both Houses of Parliament, through a system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote, and the voting is conducted by secret ballot.

    As per constitutional provisions, elections to fill a vacancy due to the end of a term must be held before the term expires. In cases where the position becomes vacant due to resignation, death, or removal, the election is to be held at the earliest possible date. The elected individual serves a full term of five years from the date of assuming office.

  • Mission Mausam aims to make India a “Weather-Ready, Climate-Smart” nation: Govt

    The government has launched the ambitious ‘Mission Mausam’ initiative aimed at transforming India into a “weather-ready and climate-smart” nation, Union Minister of State for Earth Sciences Dr. Jitendra Singh informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

    The scheme, with a total outlay of ₹2,000 crore for the period 2024–2026, seeks to develop advanced weather surveillance technologies, strengthen forecasting capabilities, and improve last-mile dissemination systems. The budget allocation includes ₹258 crore for the financial year 2024–25 and ₹1,742 crore for 2025–26.

    Dr. Singh said the scheme focuses on enhancing atmospheric observation networks using next-generation radars, wind profilers, and satellite systems equipped with advanced payloads. The use of high-performance computing systems, Earth system models, and AI/ML-based data tools will also be central to the mission.

    A key element of Mission Mausam is the development of a state-of-the-art Decision Support System (DSS) to improve disaster preparedness and weather communication at the local level.

    The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), which has long provided customised weather forecasts for tourist and pilgrimage destinations, will leverage this mission to offer improved services. These include real-time updates for major events such as the Char Dham and Amarnath Yatras, as well as the Maha Kumbh Mela, held earlier this year.

    “Mission Mausam will significantly enhance our ability to monitor and forecast extreme weather and climate events. It will help tourists and tourism-related businesses plan better and reduce losses caused by adverse weather,” the minister said.

    The King has approved the nomination of Trustees of the Board of the Churches Conservation Trust.

    The King has approved the nomination of Bishop Andrew Rumsey, Dr Ingrid Samuel OBE, Lord (Stephen) Parkinson of Whitley Bay, Michael Bithell JP, Vivienne King and Reverend Canon Timothy Goode.

    Andrew Rumsey read history at the University of Reading before training for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge and doctoral studies at King’s College, London. Ordained in 1997, he has held a variety of parish posts in London and Southwark and was appointed Suffragan Bishop of Ramsbury in 2018. Andrew is the joint National Church of England Lead for Church and Cathedral Buildings, and is a writer, musician and champion for Anglican heritage.

    Dr Ingrid Helene Samuel OBE was educated at McGill University, Canada, obtaining BA in History, she then gained a M Litt and PhD in Modern History at Jesus College, Cambridge. In 2004 Ingrid was Head of Culture for the London Olympic Bid and between 2005 – 2011 has held several roles in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport including Head of Properties and Ceremonial Branch, Head of Heritage, and Head of Heritage and Architecture. Additionally, in 2011 she took up the role of Placemaking and Heritage Director with the National Trust.

    Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, obtaining an MA in History. From 2021-2024 Stephen was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department for Culture, Media & Sport, and previously was Political Secretary to the Prime Minister and Special Adviser to the Home Secretary.

    Michael Bithell JP was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, completing a MA in Engineering Science and post-graduate studies in Manufacture and Management at Cambridge University. Now retired, Michael was Group Finance Director of United Westminster and Grey Coat Foundation from 2015 to 2022. Previously, he worked for Deloitte LLP for 23 years, as Director, National Quality & Risk; and Director, Corporate Finance Government & Infrastructure. He has a number of voluntary and non-executive positions, including as a member of London Diocesan Synod, Finance Committee and Non-Property Investment Committee, as a Magistrate and an Honorary Steward of Westminster Abbey.

    Vivienne King was educated at Keele University obtaining a BSoc Sci in Law and Politics in 1983, subsequently completing a Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in 1985. In 2010 and 2012 she completed a Corporate Finance Programme with Cranfield University and in 2021 undertook Business Sustainability Management with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. After seven years as Real Estate Associate with Herbert Smith Freehills, Vivienne joined The Crown Estate in 1994 as a Senior Solicitor and was subsequently Director of Business Operations & General Counsel. She was CEO of the Soho Housing Association from 2016 to 2020, CEO of Revo and then Head of Real Estate Social Impact at The Good Economy. In March 2024 Vivienne founded Impactful Places, an independent sustainability consultancy.

    Timothy Goode has been the Canon for Congregational Discipleship and Nurture at York Minster since September 2023. Previously he was Rector of St Margaret’s Lee in South East London, and a member of General Synod and Archbishops’ Council. Tim is a member of the National Disability Task Group, which advises the Archbishops of Canterbury and York on disability issues and he led the first debate on disability at the General Synod in July 2022. Tim was a secondary school teacher at the Roehampton Institute and Director of Music of Homefield School from 1995-2007. He trained for ministry at Ripon College Cuddesdon and served his title at Croydon Minster, in the Diocese of Southwark and was ordained priest in 2010. From September 2012 to May 2018, he was Team Vicar of St Luke’s Whyteleafe and St Peter and St Paul, Chaldon, part of the Caterham Team ministry. From 2013 to 2021 he was additionally the Southwark Diocesan Disability Advisor. Tim was made an Honorary Canon of Southwark Cathedral in September 2020 and has been a trustee of the Churches Conservation Trust since November 2020. He has now been re-appointed in the role for a second term until October 2028.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: More than two in five people in the English- and Dutch-Speaking Caribbean struggle for daily meals

    BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS – Nearly 3.2 million people in the English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean are food insecure, according to the latest Food Security and Livelihoods Survey by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). In 2025, 30 percent of Caribbean people reported eating less than usual; which is in line with the trend over the last 4 years arising from increased food costs that accompanied global geopolitical factors.

    Across the Caribbean, nations face food-related challenges due to their geographic remoteness, lack of locally available resources and exposure to climate worsening.

    “The Caribbean is particularly vulnerable to natural hazards and supply chain disruptions, which can cause rapid increases in food prices. It’s deeply concerning that many people are struggling to afford the food they need. Strengthening and diversifying supply chains and trade routes across the region is essential. These efforts will help make food more accessible and affordable, while supporting faster recovery in times of crisis,” said Brian Bogart, WFP’s Representative and Country Director in the Caribbean.

    Rising food prices are a major concern for the region, with food inflation consistently outpacing overall inflation rates. Nearly all respondents, 94 percent, report higher food costs in the months leading up to the survey. One-third of households also experienced job loss or reduced income, putting further strain on already stretched budgets.

    Local production efforts are being challenged by rapidly increasing operational costs. Among farmers, 85 percent report rising prices for animal feed and tools or machinery, 81 percent note higher fertilizer prices, and 73 percent cite increased seed costs. These burdens are particularly heavy in a region that relies significantly on imported agricultural inputs.

    CARICOM’s Director of Sectoral Programmes, Ambassador David Prendergast noted, “As we commence our successor programme 25 by 2025+5, we must stress the importance of data to inform our strategic interventions in achieving greater food and nutrition security.”

    Investing in adaptive social protection and emergency preparedness will be essential to cushion the impacts of future shocks which threaten people’s access to food. In an environment marked by hazards, robust social protection mechanisms provide a safeguard, whilst integrating strategies to assist where the need is greatest. Access to data is essential to deliver these mechanisms. The survey and the recently launched real-time food real-time food security monitoring system by CARICOM and WFP, will play a key role in identifying emerging needs early and supporting timely decision-making.

    The Food Security and Livelihoods survey is made possible through the support of the Government of Canada and the European Union. It is part of the partnership between CARICOM and WFP to support CARICOM’s efforts to understand, track, and address food insecurity across the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean.

    New Zealand is lagging behind the rest of the world through its failure to recognise Palestinian statehood, says Former Prime Minister Helen Clark.

    Canada yesterday became the latest country to announce it would formally recognise the state of Palestine when world leaders met at the UN General Assembly in September.

    It follows recent similar commitments from the France and the United Kingdom.

    On Wednesday, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon suggested the discussion was a distraction and said the immediate focus should be on getting humanitarian aid into Gaza.

    But, speaking to RNZ Midday Report, Clark said New Zealand needed to come on board.

    “We are watching a catastrophe unfold in Gaza. We’re watching starvation. We’re watching famine conditions for many. Many are using the word genocide,” she said.

    “If New Zealand can’t act in these circumstances, when can it act?”

    Elders call for recognition
    “The Elders, a group of world leaders of which Clark is a part, last month issued a call for countries to recognise the state of Palestine, calling it the “beginning, not the end of a political pathway towards lasting peace”.

    Clark said the government seemed to be trying avoid the ire of the United States by waiting until the peace process was well underway or nearing its end.

    “That is no longer tenable,” she said.

    “New Zealand really is lagging behind.”

    Even before the recent commitments from France, Canada and the UK, 147 of the UN’s 193 member states had recognised the Palestinian state.

    Clark said the hope was that the series of recognitions from major Western states would first shift the US position and then Israel’s.

    “When the US moves, Israel eventually jumps because it owes so much to the United States for the support, financial, military and otherwise,” she said.

    “At some point, Israel has to smell the coffee.”

    Surprised over Peters
    Clark said she was “a little surprised” that Foreign Minister Winston Peters had not been more forward-leaning given he historically had strongly advocated New Zealand’s even-handed position.

    On Wednesday, New Zealand signed a joint statement with 14 other countries expressing a willingness to recognise the State of Palestine as a necessary step towards a two-state solution.

    However, later speaking in Parliament, Peters said that was conditional on first seeing progress from Palestine, including representative governance, commitment to non-violence, and security guarantees for Israel.

    “If we are to recognise the state of Palestine, New Zealand wants to know that what we are recognising is a legitimate, representative, viable, political entity,” Peters told MPs.

    Peters also agreed with a contribution from ACT’s Simon Court that recognising the state of Palestine could be viewed as “a reward [to Hamas] for acts of terrorism” if it was done before Hamas had returned hostages or laid down arms.

    Luxon earlier told RNZ New Zealand had long supported the eventual recognition of Palestinian statehood, but that the immediate focus should be on getting aid into Gaza rather than “fragmenting and talking about all sorts of other things that are distractions”.

    “We need to put the pressure on Israel to get humanitarian assistance unfettered, at scale, at volume, into Gaza,” he told RNZ.

    “You can talk about a whole bunch of other things, but for right now, the world needs to focus.”

  • Thailand returns some Cambodian soldiers ahead of key border talks

    Thailand’s army sent home two Cambodian soldiers from a group of 20 on Friday, ahead of a key meeting in Malaysia next week where defence ministers and military commanders will hold talks aimed at maintaining a ceasefire along their disputed border.

    Long-simmering tensions on the Thai-Cambodian border exploded into clashes last week, including exchanges of artillery fire and jet fighter sorties, the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbours in over a decade.

    The clashes claimed at least 43 lives and left over 300,000 people displaced.

    A truce was achieved on Monday, following a push by Malaysia and phone calls from U.S President Trump who threatened to hold off tariff negotiations with both countries until fighting stopped.

    Thailand and Cambodia previously faced tariffs of 36% for sending goods to the U.S., their largest export markets. Following further negotiations, they will now pay a 19% tariff, the White House announced on Friday.

    In Bangkok, Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub told reporters on Friday that two Cambodian soldiers had been sent back, and the remaining 18 were being processed for violating immigration law.

    “The Cambodian soldiers intruded on Thai territory and the army took them into custody, treating them based on humanitarian principles,” he said.

    In a statement, the Cambodian defence ministry asked Thailand to return all the detained soldiers.

    “Cambodia is actively engaging in negotiations to secure their release, and reiterates its firm call for their immediate and unconditional release in accordance with the international humanitarian law,” a ministry spokesperson said.

    Defence ministers and military leaders from both sides, who were previously scheduled to meet in the Cambodian capital next week, will now hold talks in Malaysia, after Thailand sought a neutral venue for the meeting.

    The General Border Committee, which coordinates on border security, ceasefires, and troop deployments, will meet between August 4-7, Thai Acting Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit told reporters.

    “Defence attachés from other ASEAN countries will be invited as well as the defence attachés from the U.S. and China,” a Malaysian government spokesperson told reporters, referring to the Southeast Asian regional bloc that the country currently chairs.

    Thailand and Cambodia have for decades claimed jurisdiction over undemarcated points along their 817-km (508-mile) land border, with ownership of several ancient temples at the centre of disputes.

    In May, a Cambodian soldier was killed in a skirmish, leading to a troop build-up and a diplomatic crisis, which eventually snowballed into five-days of intense fighting in late July.

    Mandela Month ended on a high note when communities and learners in the North West province receives blankets and school shoes from the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong.

    The action-packed day for Morolong and his entourage started in Tlapeng Ward 19, near Taung, where 200 elderly women received the blankets from the Deputy Minister.

    During the handovoer on Thursday, Morolong said former President Nelson Mandela was a global man, whose spirit of ubuntu was celebrated throughout the world.

    “Nelson Mandela taught us that education is the only weapon we can use to fight poverty.

    “Today, as we are wrapping up  Nelson Mandela Month. The United Nations General Assembly resolved that 18 July will be celebrated as  International Nelson Mandela Day. We are here to celebrate the life of an icon, a global icon, the only man referred to as the father of the nation,” Morolong said.

    Nelson Mandela, the Deputy Minister said, made significant strides in the struggle against apartheid.

    “We are celebrating the life of Mandela by spending time with those that he loved most — the elderly and the kids.”

    Morolong said Nelson Mandela encouraged people to take care of those who are less privileged.

    “We are proud today that we are tempting to follow in his big footsteps and we are proud that we are upholding to his values and teachings.”

    Morolong encouraged the community to take care of children and the elderly.

    One of those who received a blanket, Mme Bettina Seloko from Tlapeng, spoke to SAnews.

    “It is very cold. One cannot sleep well because it’s cold. With the blanket I have received today, I am going to sleep well, as I will be feeling warm.

    “Government must continue to provide for the poor and those who are unemployed.”

    From Tlapeng village, the Deputy Minister proceeded to Anvonster informal settlement, where he handed over school shoes to learners. From there, he proceeded to Mmabana Cultural Centre, where he also handed over school shoes to learners from different schools.

    Morolong said giving learners shoes was a way of encouraging them to attend school.

    “Our former President Nelson Mandela has taught us that we should look after each other,” Morolong said.

    The Deputy Minister also visited Kamogelo Primary School, where he also handed over school shoes.

    This year’s Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July was celebrated under the theme: ‘It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity’.

    During the month of July, government encourages citizens to donate their time to make a difference in their communities.

    Earlier this year, Morolong received 470 pairs of school shoes from Capital Centric, on behalf of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), which were donated to learners.

    The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Africa Joint Group has concluded an on-site assessment visit to South Africa, which was aimed at verifying the implementation of reforms to address money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

    The on-site assessment took place on Tuesday and Wednesday in Pretoria, completing the last step before the October 2025 FATF Plenary can consider whether to remove South Africa from its greylist.

    The FATF Joint Group held meetings with South African government officials and representatives of financial institutions and Designated Non-Bank Financial Institutions. 

    “At the conclusion of the meetings, the FATF Africa Joint Group held a meeting with Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr David Masondo and Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Andries Nel, who both assured the FATF of the South African government’s political commitment to continue to sustainably improve the country’s Anti-Money Laundering and the Combating of the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) system,” National Treasury said on Thursday.

    The on-site visit followed the announcement by the June 2025 FATF Plenary that South Africa had substantially completed all the 22 action items that were contained in the Action Plan that was adopted when South Africa was greylisted in February 2023.

    Following the completion of the 22 action items in the Action Plan, the June 2025 FATF Plenary noted that South Africa’s progress warranted an on-site assessment to verify that critical AML/CFT reforms have been implemented, and that the necessary political commitment remains in place to sustain progress.

    “After the conclusion of the onsite visit, the FATF Africa Joint Group will submit a report to the October 2025 FATF Plenary, which will consider any recommendations from the report on whether South Africa can be delisted from the FATF greylist.

    “Deputy Ministers Masondo and Nel thanked the FATF Africa Joint Group for its collegial working relationship with the South African government delegation since the country’s greylisting in February 2023, and further assured the FATF Africa Joint Group that the South African government will continue actively partnering with the FATF Global network in preserving and advancing the integrity of the South African and global financial systems,” National Treasury said.

    Treasury will not be issuing further media statements or conducting interviews until the FATF Plenary concludes its next Plenary Meeting on 24 October 2025 and issues its post-plenary outcomes media statement. – SAnews.gov.za

    The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has applauded the launch of a research project investigating how private renewable energy investments in South Africa contribute to equitable social development.

    “Projects like Communities and the Private Renewable Energy Sector: Distributing Social Development Benefits in South Africa (COM-PRES),which support South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), are not only welcome, but are encouraged as the knowledge that will be generated will contribute to driving innovation and investment that bolsters South Africa’s renewable energy capacity,” George said on Friday.

    COM-PRES is a four-and-a-half-year research project, which was launched on 31 July 2025, led by Danish-based social researcher, Dr Marianne S. Ulriksen from the University of Southern Denmark. 

    It will be implemented locally, in partnership with the Centre for Social Development in Africa, at the University of Johannesburg and the Centre for Social Science Research at the University of Cape Town.

    The South African government strongly focuses on integrating renewable energy projects with social development initiatives, particularly through the REIPPPP, which is also part of the country’s ambitious just energy transition agenda.

    “COM-PRES aims to understand how private-sector renewable energy projects can address inequality in affected and surrounding South African communities through novel mandatory community trusts and social development interventions,” Ulriksen said.

    According to Ulriksen, the knowledge and ideas generated at the community level – working collaboratively with community members, local stakeholders and independent power producers – will feed back to national stakeholders, with the aim of providing practical recommendations for designing and managing renewable energy investments to enhance socio-economic outcomes and relations between communities, the industry and government.

    “South Africa can develop a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable energy sector that also supports our efforts to drive sustainable economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za

    Internship Scheme To Get More Working Class Students Into Civil Service

    Students from working class backgrounds are set to benefit from a Summer Internship Programme that will be launched to boost social mobility in the Civil Service.

    • The government is taking action to break down barriers to opportunity through its Plan for Change.

    Students from working class backgrounds are set to benefit from a Summer Internship Programme that will be launched to boost social mobility in the Civil Service. 

    The scheme will give talented undergraduates from lower socio-economic backgrounds the opportunity to see what a career in the Civil Service is like. 

    Currently, applicants from lower socio economic backgrounds are less likely to get a place on the Fast Stream. This is a first step towards changing that, as the government works to ensure the Civil Service better reflects the country it serves.

    Pat McFadden, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said: 

    We need to get more working class young people into the Civil Service so it harnesses the broadest range of talent and truly reflects the country. Government makes better decisions when it represents and understands the people we serve. 

    I want to open up opportunities for students from all backgrounds, and in every corner of the UK, so they can take a leading role at the heart of government as we re-wire the state and deliver the Plan for Change.

    The programme will give roughly 200 undergraduates the opportunity to work in a Civil Service department for two months, acting as a stepping stone to a fulfilling career in the Civil Service post-university. 

    Undergraduates on the programme, which is paid, will get experience that could include planning events, writing briefings for ministers, shadowing senior civil servants and carrying out research for policy development.

    Those on the scheme will get access to tailored support, including being allocated a “buddy” who is a current Fast Streamer and getting access to skills sessions. Participants who perform well will be fast-tracked to the final stages of the Fast Stream selection process if they decide to apply for a job after graduation.

    The scheme will open for applications in October with the first cohort starting in summer 2026. The government is taking action seeking to break down barriers to opportunity through its Plan for Change. 

    The move is the latest change to deliver greater diversity in the Civil Service and make it more representative of the people it serves. Earlier this year the Government launched a new Career Launch apprenticeship scheme targeted at young people and school leavers. It also announced a new ambition for the Fast Stream programme to have 50% of placements offered outside of London by 2030,

    The Fast Stream is the Civil Service’s highly regarded graduate scheme, which regularly features at the top of the Times Top 100 Graduate list each year. It offers high potential graduates an accelerated route to senior leadership positions in Government.

    South Korea’s ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is in detention while on trial and facing various criminal probes, lay on the floor of his cell on Friday and refused to leave it for questioning, a spokesperson for a special prosecutor said.

    Yoon was removed from office in April by the Constitutional Court over his botched attempt last year to declare martial law and is now being investigated by a special prosecution team formed under new President Lee Jae Myung.

    Prosecutors investigating influence-peddling allegations connected to Yoon and his wife had tried to get him to comply with an arrest warrant and attend questioning voluntarily, a spokesperson for the special prosecution said.

    “But the suspect stubbornly refused to do so, while lying on the ground, not dressed in a prison uniform,” Oh Jung-hee told a news briefing. She said investigators would try again to bring him in, even if they had to use force.

    Yoon was dressed only in his undershirt and underwear when prosecutors came to his cell, the Yonhap News Agency reported, citing the special prosecution.

    Yu Jeong-hwa, one of Yoon’s lawyers, told Reuters that bringing up what he was wearing in a small space where the temperature was close to 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) was a public insult to his dignity and showed how the state was violating inmates’ human rights.

    The former president was put back in a solitary cell at the Seoul Detention Center in July, as prosecutors investigating his short-lived declaration of martial law in December sought additional charges against him.

    Yoon is already on trial for insurrection, a charge which is punishable by death or life imprisonment.

    He also faces a string of other investigations led by special prosecutors including one into scandals surrounding his wife, former First Lady Kim Keon Hee, where the couple allegedly exerted inappropriate influence over elections.

    Yoon has denied any wrongdoing and his lawyers have accused prosecutors of conducting a politically-motivated witch hunt.

    The former president has repeatedly rejected requests by prosecutors to appear for questioning, citing health issues.

    His lawyers said on Thursday that he was unwell due to preexisting conditions, including a condition that meant there was a risk of him losing his eyesight.

    In a reference to Yoon’s position as a former top prosecutor, Oh, the spokesperson for the special prosecution, said the case was being closely scrutinised by the public.

    “The suspect has consistently highlighted the importance of laws, principles, fairness and common sense and through this case people are watching if the law applies equally to everyone,” Oh said.

    Separately, investigators requested that Yoon’s wife Kim, who has also denied any wrongdoing, attend questioning on August 6. Kim’s lawyers have said she would cooperate with the investigation.

    The inaugural Beijing Intelligent Healthcare and Nurse Robots Application Competition took place on Tuesday in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (Beijing E-Town), coinciding with the launch of the IEC 63310 international standard for eldercare robots.

    The competition showcased 53 products from 40 teams across China, focusing on five key scenarios of eldercare: rehabilitation training, caregiving, intelligent companionship, health monitoring, and public services. Participants represented cities including Beijing, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Wuxi, covering the entire industry chain from hardware manufacturing to software development.

    The competition broke away from traditional formats by introducing a pioneering “Direct-to-Market” model, designed to better match supply with demand through collaboration among government, industry, academia, research institutions, and end users.

    “Participating in this competition helps boost our market recognition and brand competitiveness, enabling precise supply-demand matching and accelerating implementation,” said Shuai Mei, CEO of Beijing AI-robotics Technology Co., Ltd.

    The competition invited senior citizens to participate as judges, aiming to collect their feedback to ensure that the featured technologies meet their real life needs. One participant, a 73-year-old senior surnamed Zhang, said “Robotic care for the elderly is the future trend. I saw many specialized robots today that assist with walking and hand rehabilitation.”

    As the world confronts aging demographics, Beijing E-Town is leading the way in the eldercare robotics, with over 300 specialized companies and an industrial chain exceeding 10 billion yuan (US$1.39 billion).

    “This event is not only a technical competition but also a platform for building the industrial ecosystem,” said a government representative from Beijing E-Town. “We aim to promote research, application, and production through the competition, facilitating the transition of robotic technology from the laboratory to the frontline of eldercare, and ensuring it meets the real needs of seniors.”

  • MIL-OSI Russia: The Polytechnic University summed up the results of the competition “Best Teacher in the Eyes of Students-2025”

    At the initiative of the student community, the Polytechnic University traditionally held the “Best Teacher through the Eyes of Students” competition from June 5 to July 12.

    The competition has been held at the university since 2021 and this year it celebrated a small anniversary – five years. As usual, students nominate teachers for participation in the competition who, from their point of view, best meet such approved criteria as “Personal interest in the subject”, “Openness to everything new”, “Pedagogical excellence”, “Culture of interaction with students”, “Commitment to the traditions of the Polytechnic University”, etc. However, this year, only graduating students who received their diplomas this year could vote for teachers. For each of the nine criteria of the competitive selection, the students had to nominate only one teacher.

    “Our university is changing, and the rules for the “Best Teacher in the Eyes of Students” competition are changing along with it,” explained SPbPU Vice-Rector for Educational Activities Lyudmila Pankova. “In this anniversary year for the competition, it was important for us to find out which teachers remain in the hearts of graduates leaving the university on their way to a new, big life.”

    Perhaps the most important change in the rules of the competition was that student voting was transferred to the Telegram bot “Digital Pelican” of the Trade Union of Students of SPbPU.

    “We think it is important that our students have taken responsibility not only for developing the evaluation criteria for the competition, but also for its implementation,” noted Elena Zima, Director of the Education Quality Center. “This significant step in improving the competition procedure will increase the university students’ confidence in the competition results and their involvement, which will undoubtedly contribute to improving the overall culture of education quality at the Polytechnic.”

    494 Polytechnic graduates took part in the voting. The winners and prize winners were 10 teachers from seven institutes: GI, IBSiB, IKNK, IPMEiT, IFiM, IFKSiT, IE. All of them will receive cash prizes. The results of the competition are also taken into account in the rating of the faculty. The award ceremony for teachers will traditionally take place on Knowledge Day, September 1.

    The winners of the competition in the nomination “Best of the Best” were:

    Anton Pavlovich Shaban (IPMEiT); Sergey Aleksandrovich Vazhnov (IE); Elmira Alyarovna Nazarova (IPMEiT).

    CHICAGO, Aug. 01, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Marquette National Corporation (OTCQX: MNAT) today reported year-to-date net income of $6.6 million compared to net income of $13.2 million for the first six months of 2024. Earnings per share for the first six months of 2025 were $1.52, as compared to income of $3.02 per share for the comparable period in 2024.

    At June 30, 2025, total assets were $2.23 billion, an increase of $22 million, or 1%, compared to $2.21 billion at December 31, 2024. Total loans increased by $32 million to $1.44 billion compared to $1.41 billion at the end of 2024. Total deposits increased by $20 million, or 1%, to $1.76 billion compared to $1.74 billion at the end of 2024.

    The Australian Judicial Officers Association (AJOA) calls on the Attorney General of the Northern Territory to defend the Northern Territory Coroner against personal attack.

    This follows an extraordinary attack on the Coroner in the Northern Territory Parliament by the Minister for Prevention of Domestic Violence on 29 July 2025.

    “Public discussion and debate about the work of the courts is an essential part of our democracy”, AJOA President Justice Steven Moore said.

    “But it must not undermine judicial independence and the vital work of the courts. Personal attacks by politicians on members of the judiciary have that effect and only undermine public confidence in the courts”.

    “In saying that the Coroner lacked ‘humility’ and ‘bravery’, and that she was ‘more focused on the reveal rather than the result’, the Minister unfairly belittled the integrity and professionalism of the Coroner in important proceedings of great public interest”.

    The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) has announced a set of measures in response to the tariff hike on South African exports to the United States, which comes into effect this month.

    “The dtic has announced a set of measures in response to the imminent 30% tariff hike on South African exports to the United States, which comes into effect on 1 August 2025.

    “These urgent interventions are part of the dtic’s ongoing commitment to protecting jobs, preserving market access in the United States, and promoting export diversification to alternate markets in Africa, the EU [European Union], Asia, Latin America, and other strategic partners,” Minister Parks Tau said in a statement ahead of the start of the implementation of the tariff.

    In Thursday’s statement, Tau said key among the interventions is the establishment of an Export Support Desk, which will serve as a direct point of contact for companies affected by the US tariff hike.

    “The Desk will provide updates on developments and tailored advisory services to exporters on alternative destinations, guidance on market entry processes, insights into compliance requirements and linkages to South African Embassies and High Commissions abroad.”

    In July, President Cyril Ramaphosa noted the correspondence from the United States (US) President Donald Trump on the unilateral imposition of a 30% trade tariff against South Africa.

    In a letter addressed to President Ramaphosa, President Trump announced that he would subject imports from South Africa to new 30% tariffs, that would take effect from 1 August 2025.

    On Thursday, the dtic said the tariff hike poses a “direct threat” to the country’s export capacity, particularly in strategic sectors such as automotive, agro-processing, steel and chemicals, amongst others.

    “As government, we are fully committed to supporting our exporters through this challenging time. We are working with urgency and resolve to implement real and practical interventions that defend jobs and position South Africa competitively in a shifting global landscape.

    “The stakes are high and we must respond decisively to ensure our export industries remain resilient, competitive, and globally integrated into diversified markets.

    “Exporters are encouraged to engage directly with the Export Support Desk and also to visit the dtic website regularly for updates and support mechanisms. The dtic remains steadfast in its mission to assist local producers and safeguard South Africa’s trade interests amid growing global uncertainty,” the Minister explained.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Latvia to get solar-power boost as energy company Sunly receives almost €85 million international financing

    Latvia is set to get more clean energy as a result of almost € 85 million in international financing for renewable-electricity provider Sunly. Estonia-based Sunly will use the loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and SEB to build four solar parks in Latvia with total capacity of 329 megawatts (MW) enough to meet the annual electricity consumption of up to 180,000 households.

    The project marks one of Latvia’s most ambitious renewable-energy initiatives to date and will accelerate the Baltic region’s shift to clean power while enhancing Latvia’s energy independence. The financing package includes loans of €35.2 million from the EIB, €35.2 million from the EBRD and €14.4 million from SEB.

    The solar parks are due to be completed by early 2027 and will be located near Matīši village in Valmiera Municipality (54 MW), in Dagda Parish, Krāslava Municipality (90 MW), near Barkava village in Madona Municipality (81 MW) and in Zirņi Parish, Saldus Municipality (104 MW).

    “Latvia’s bold push for hybrid solar infrastructure is exactly the kind of forward-looking investment Europe needs,” said EIB Vice-President Thomas Östros. “We are proud to support Sunly’s vision — not just to generate clean power, but to build energy systems that are resilient, flexible, and future-ready. This project is a blueprint for how we can accelerate the green transition while strengthening regional energy security.”

    While the scope of this financing will support the solar component, the broader ambition is to develop all sites as hybrid parks, by subsequently integrating wind energy and battery energy storage systems, aiming to ensure more stable electricity production, improve grid efficiency, and enhance energy security.

    Latvia’s installed solar capacity reached approximately 660 MW at the end of 2024, more than doubling from 305 MW in 2023 and 100 MW in 2022. According to the long-term planning guidelines Energy Strategy Latvia 2050, solar capacity is projected to reach around 1.2 GW by 2030, gradually increasing to 2.0 GW in the baseline scenario by mid-century. Sunly’s large-scale solar projects are set to play a major role in achieving these targets.

    This financing is a significant step toward strengthening Latvia’s economy and energy supply,” said Toms Nāburgs, Sunly’s country manager for Latvia. “By developing large hybrid solar parks, we are not only increasing the country’s renewable energy production capacity but also enhancing energy security and driving economic growth in the regions. These parks will provide long-term benefits to local communities by supporting socially important projects and initiatives, as well as contributing to the country’s broader electrification and subsequent industrialization.

    The solar parks are financed on a non-recourse basis without relying on government subsidies or long-term power contracts and are designed to thrive in a competitive energy market. Sunly has built more than 300 MW of renewable-energy capacity in Estonia, Latvia and Poland over the past five years, with plans to add a further 700 MW over the next two years

    What you need to know: California has completed a multi-year effort to modernize its aerial firefighting fleet, with the final delivery of two state-of-the-art Fire Hawk helicopters arriving in Sacramento – bringing CAL FIRE’s Fire Hawk fleet to a total of 16 stationed throughout the state.

    SACRAMENTO – In stark contrast to the Trump administration’s cuts to public safety and emergency response, California continues to ramp up its firefighting arsenal: the state now has the largest civilian helicopter firefighting fleet in the world.

    Governor Gavin Newsom today announced a monumental achievement in CAL FIRE’s ongoing commitment to protecting California, as the final two of sixteen Sikorsky S-70i Fire Hawk helicopters arrived at McClellan Airfield in Sacramento. This arrival completes a multi-year transition that significantly upgrades the department’s aerial firefighting capabilities. This year also marks the full conversion of all ten CAL FIRE Helitack bases from the Vietnam-era Huey UH-1H helicopters to the state-of-the-art Fire Hawk. The U.S. Forest Service has lost 10% of all positions and 25% of positions outside of direct wildfire response – both of which are likely to impact wildfire response this year. Just last week, the Trump administration proposed a massive reorganization that would shutter the Pacific Regional Forest Service office and other regional Forest Service offices across the West, compounding staff cuts and voluntary resignations across the agency.

    The world’s largest aerial firefighting fleet – just got even bigger

    The new Fire Hawk helicopters add to the largest aerial firefighting fleet in the world. Governor Newsom recently announced that the state’s second C-130 Hercules airtanker is ready for firefighting operations

    CAL FIRE’s history with helicopters in firefighting dates back to the 1960s, when the Department first utilized choppers for reconnaissance and transport. Their versatility and ability to operate in challenging terrain led to their adoption for fire suppression in support of ground crews. 

    “The completion of our S-70i Fire Hawk fleet and the transition of all Helitack bases is thanks to the dedication of the entire CAL FIRE aviation program,” said CAL FIRE Chief and Director Joe Tyler. “This is about equipping our firefighters with the most advanced tools available to respond to the increasing complexities of wildland fires.”

    In the 1980s, CAL FIRE began its helicopter fleet with the Bell Huey, and for over four decades, the Huey has been the workhorse of the CAL FIRE Helitack program.

    The impacts of the transition to the purpose-built S-70i Fire Hawk, which began in 2018, are significant:

    • Increased water-dropping capacity: The Fire Hawk can carry nearly three times as much water as its predecessors (1000 gallons), allowing for more effective and immediate suppression efforts.
    • Enhanced night operations: Outfitted for night operations, the Fire Hawk extends CAL FIRE’s ability to fight fires around the clock, a critical advantage in containing rapidly spreading incidents. This capability proved valuable in January when CAL FIRE responded to the Palisades Fire. Multiple CAL FIRE helicopters, and partner agency aircraft, conducted crucial night operations in the Mandeville Canyon area, dropping over 375,000 gallons of water. Operating at low altitudes under night vision goggles (NVG) and navigating complex terrain and hazards such as high-tension power lines, flight crews were instrumental in halting the fire’s advance toward residential neighborhoods. Had the fire breached Mandeville Canyon, projections indicated a rapid spread toward the 405 Freeway corridor, putting hundreds of homes at risk. The combined nighttime and daylight operations ultimately prevented structural loss and showcased the value of CAL FIRE’s modernized aerial fleet and highly trained personnel in defending high-risk urban interface zones. CAL FIRE flew its first night mission with the Fire Hawk in 2022 in response to the Electra Fire.
    • Expanded crew and capabilities: With the capacity for more crew and an external permanently affixed hoist, the Fire Hawk provides greater flexibility for personnel deployment and rescue operations.
    • Improved flight safety: These state-of-the-art helicopters offer a greater degree of safety for firefighters and the community.

    California’s unprecedented wildfire readiness 

    As part of the state’s ongoing investment in wildfire resilience and emergency response, CAL FIRE has significantly expanded its workforce over the past five years by adding an average of 1,800 full-time and 600 seasonal positions annually – nearly double that of the previous administration. Over the next four years and beyond, CAL FIRE will be hiring thousands of additional firefighters, natural resource professionals, and support personnel to meet the state’s growing demands.

    In recent months, the Governor has announced millions of dollars in investments to protect communities from wildfire – with $135 million available for new and ongoing prevention projects and $72 million going out the door to projects across the state. This is part of over $5 billion the Newsom administration, in collaboration with the legislature, has invested in wildfire and forest resilience since 2019. Additionally, 54 new vegetation management projects spanning nearly 12,000 acres have already been fast-tracked to approval under the streamlined process provided by the Governor’s March 2025 state of emergency proclamation.

    This builds on consecutive years of intensive and focused work by California to confront the severe ongoing risk of catastrophic wildfires. New, bold moves to streamline state-level regulatory processes builds long-term efforts already underway in California to increase wildfire response and forest management in the face of a hotter, drier climate.

    Net income attributable to Unitholders for the three months ended June 30, 2025 was $26 million ($0.12 per limited partnership unit), compared to net loss of $20 million (loss of $0.10 per limited partnership unit) in the prior period.

    Adjusted EBITDA for the three months ended June 30, 2025 was $591 million, compared to $524 million in the prior period reflecting increased performance on a same store basis and contribution from recently completed acquisitions. Prior period results included $71 million of contribution from disposed operations including our offshore oil services’ shuttle tanker operation which was sold in January 2025.

    Our Industrials segment generated Adjusted EBITDA of $307 million for the three months ended June 30, 2025, compared to $213 million during the same period in 2024, benefiting from strong operating performance at our advanced energy storage operation. Current period results included $71 million of tax recoveries as well as contribution from recent acquisitions including our electric heat tracing systems manufacturer which was acquired in January 2025. Prior period results included contribution from our Canadian aggregates production operation which was sold in June 2024.

    Our Business Services segment generated Adjusted EBITDA of $205 million for the three months ended June 30, 2025, compared to $182 million during the same period in 2024 which reflected the impact of reduced contribution from our dealer software and technology services operation in the prior period. Prior period results included contribution from our road fuels operation which was sold in July 2024.

    Our Infrastructure Services segment generated Adjusted EBITDA of $109 million for the three months ended June 30, 2025, compared to $157 million during the same period in 2024 primarily reflecting the sale of our offshore oil services’ shuttle tanker operation in January 2025.

    Adjusted EFO included the benefit of lower interest expense due to a reduction in corporate borrowings compared to the prior period. Industrials Adjusted EFO reflected the impact of higher interest expense related to the funding of a distribution received from our advanced energy storage operation during the current year. Adjusted EFO in the prior period included $103 million of net gains related to the disposition of our Canadian aggregates production operation and the sale of public securities.

    Strategic Initiatives

    • Capital Recycling
      In July, we completed the previously announced sale of a partial interest in three businesses to a new evergreen private equity fund managed by Brookfield Asset Management. In exchange, BBU will receive units of the new evergreen fund with an initial redemption value of approximately $690 million, representing an aggregate 8.6% discount to net asset value (NAV) of the interests sold. In the 18-month period following the initial close of the new evergreen fund, the units are expected to be redeemed for cash.
    • Canadian Mortgage Lender
      In July, we entered into a partnership to privatize First National Financial Corporation, a leading publicly-listed Canadian residential and multi-family mortgage lender, for $2.7 billion. The transaction is expected to be funded with approximately $1.3 billion of equity, of which BBU’s share is expected to be approximately $145 million for an 11% interest in the business. The transaction is expected to close later this year, subject to obtaining the required shareholder, court and regulatory approvals and the satisfaction of other customary closing conditions.
    • Specialty Consumables and Equipment Manufacturer
      In May, we completed the previously announced acquisition of Antylia Scientific, a leading manufacturer and distributor of critical consumables and testing equipment serving life sciences and environmental labs for approximately $1.3 billion. BBU invested $168 million for a 26% interest.
    • Unit Repurchase Program
      During the quarter, we invested $56 million to repurchase 2.2 million units and shares of Brookfield Business Partners at an average price of approximately $25 per unit and share. Since the start of the year, our buyback program has returned $157 million to owners through the repurchase of 6.5 million units and shares under our normal course issuer bid (NCIB), which we plan to renew once it expires later this month.

    Liquidity

    We ended the quarter with approximately $2.3 billion of liquidity at the corporate level, including $2.2 billion of availability on our credit facilities. Pro forma for announced and recently closed transactions, corporate liquidity is approximately $2.9 billion.

    Distribution

    The Board of Directors has declared a quarterly distribution in the amount of $0.0625 per unit, payable on September 29, 2025 to unitholders of record as at the close of business on August 29, 2025.

    Net loss attributable to Brookfield Business Partners for the three months ended June 30, 2025 was $120 million, compared to net income of $124 million during the same period in 2024. Current period results included $176 million of remeasurement loss on our exchangeable and class B shares that are classified as liabilities under IFRS and a net gain recognized upon the deconsolidation of our healthcare services operation due to loss of control. Prior period results reflect the impact of reduced contribution from our construction operation. As at June 30, 2025, the exchangeable and class B shares were remeasured to reflect the closing price of $25.93 per unit.

    The Board of Directors has declared a quarterly dividend in the amount of $0.0625 per share, payable on September 29, 2025 to shareholders of record as at the close of business on August 29, 2025.

    Professor Firoz Cachalia sworn in as Minister of Police

    Professor Firoz Cachalia has been sworn in as the new Minister of Police during ceremony held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday.  

    “In terms of the powers vested in me by Section 91(3)(c) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 1996, I have decided to appoint the following person as Minister for the portfolio indicated in the signed President’s Act. The said Minister-Designate, who is about to become Minister, is Professor Firoz Cachalia… (sic),” said President Cyril Ramaphosa during the ceremony.

    The swearing in follows President Ramaphosa’s announcement last month that he had placed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on a leave of absence with immediate effect.

    The affirmation was administered by Acting Judge President, Aubrey Ledwaba, following Cachalia’s appointment by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

    The President further announced the establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry, led by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, into allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. 

    Mkhwanazi had raised concerns about an alleged criminal syndicate that has infiltrated law enforcement and intelligence structures. He also accused Mchunu of colluding with criminal elements to disband the Political Killings Task Team based in KwaZulu-Natal.

    Addressing members of the media after the ceremony, President Ramaphosa acknowledged the concerns regarding the seeming duplication in the police ministry.  

    “I know there is a technicality about seeming to have two Ministers in the same portfolio, and that is a matter I do believe is going to be resolved within a short space of time.  

    “I directed the commission [of inquiry] to complete its work as quickly as possible, so whatever confusion there might be is going to be of a short duration. I expect a report from the commission within three months and if they have to ask for an extension, we will give consideration to that. 

    “I do want this matter to be resolved as quickly as possible but at the same time, we have had to provide leadership to the police service. We can’t leave a vacuum. Whilst all of this is happening, Minister Mchunu is on leave while this matter is being resolved, and he is preparing himself, as I hear, to appear before the commission,” the President said.  

    Speaking to the media about his new role, Cachalia said he had not yet had an opportunity to meet with the President but had been informed that the first Cabinet meeting would take place on Wednesday, and he assumed the President would engage with him in due course.  

    Cachalia assured the public that he is fully aware of the responsibility that comes with the role and is committed to prioritising their safety and security.  

    “I don’t think there are any specific fears going into this portfolio. I understand the moment the country is in and the weight of the responsibility that I have, together with the others in government. I want to assure the public that their safety and security is uppermost in my mind. That’s what I am going to focus on, and I hope that I will be able to take the country forward,” he said. 

    Responding to a question on whether he supports the work of the Political Killings Task Team, Cachalia said he would comment after meeting with National Commissioner Fannie Masemola on Thursday next week.  

    “I don’t think it will be appropriate for me to comment on that without having the benefit of a discussion with him,” he said. 

    Cachalia also touched on his dual role as chairperson of the National Anti-Corruption Council, whose term ends at the end of the month. 

    “I do think that my appointment as a Minister of this portfolio, while I am still the chairperson of the National Anti-Corruption Council – the term of which expires at the end of this month… I am now in a better position than I was as chairperson to take the recommendations of the Council forward, and I will certainly be doing so.”  

    Cachalia said he would ask the National Commissioner, during their upcoming meeting, to arrange a session between the Anti-Corruption Council and the police management team to discuss the Council’s recommendations, adding that it is his intention to work closely with the Minister of Justice, as the recommendations impact both their portfolios. 

    “We will together be in a much better position going forward to take those recommendations forward. The recommendations that the Council has made are the ones I am committed to fully implementing,” Cachalia said.  

    On when he will travel to KwaZulu-Natal to meet with General Mkhwanazi, Cachalia said the visit will depend on his discussion with the National Commissioner. 

    “As the national Minister, I have to visit all the provinces – in what sequence and with what priorities in mind, that still has to be determined. So, I will answer that question in the coming days,” he said.  

    Minister Cachalia vowed to work hard and remain focused on his responsibilities despite the challenges surrounding his appointment.  

    “I will work hard. I am not distracted by the noise, and I am not driven by political ambition. I have been given a task. I am going to tackle the task without fear or favour, subject of course to the President’s guidance and direction as a member of the Cabinet,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za
