    Tashkent, May 9 (Xinhua) — Six people were killed in a gas-air explosion in Samarkand, the Uzbek regional emergency department said on Friday.

    It is reported that on the night of May 8-9 in the city of Samarkand, a gas-air mixture flashed in one of the houses. The explosion caused by the ignition of the mixture led to the collapse of the reinforced concrete structures of the building.

    As a result of the actions carried out, the bodies of six citizens were discovered under the rubble.

    It is noted that fire and rescue teams arrived at the scene and began to eliminate the consequences of the accident.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: UN Security Council extends South Sudan mission amid rising instability

    The Security Council has extended the mandate of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for another year, as the world’s youngest nation teeters on the brink of renewed conflict.

    Introduced by the United States and supported by 11 other Council members, the resolution extended the mandate of UNMISS until 30 April next year.

    This action follows a short nine-day “technical rollover” approved by the Council on 30 April to allow more time for negotiations.

    Through the text – adopted on Thursday – the Security Council authorized the peacekeeping mission to “use all necessary means” to implement its mandate – including the protection of civilians, assisting aid delivery, supporting implementation of the 2018 peace agreement, and investigating violations of international law.

    Three nations – China, Pakistan, and Russia – abstained.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Germany’s new government wants to be a foreign policy power

    When the CDU/CSU and the SPD sealed their coalition agreement to form the next German government, the would-be chancellor Friedrich Merz proudly announced: “Germany is back on track”. Against a backdrop of considerable geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges, the partners wanted to send clear signal not only to the German public, but also to the European and international partners. After three years of intense government infighting, a new, stable administration was in charge in Germany.

    However, a very different message was ultimately sent when a routine vote to confirm Merz as chancellor became an unprecedented fiasco.

    Merz failed to gain enough support to be confirmed as chancellor, having lost votes from his own coalition. Merz did manage to secure the parliament’s nomination in a second round of voting, but there is now plenty of gossiping about who was responsible for this disaster. Who in his coalition was taking “revenge” by voting against him in this secret ballot – and on what grounds?

    Merz will have to work to move beyond this early blow to his authority and implications in the domestic and international arena. His first action was to embark on a multi-capital tour to meet his fellow European leaders. This is a strong sign of his intentions as chancellor – to look outward, emphasising foreign policy.

    Prioritising defence and consolidating power

    For a long time, continuity has prevailed when it comes to Germany’s policy towards Europe. However, relations with neighbours are currently undergoing a period of transition due to a changing international environment. A big step came under former social democratic chancellor Olaf Scholz, who overturned post-war policy by announcing a €100 million investment in the military in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

    Merz now wants Germany to become a “leading medium-size power”. The coalition agreement signed between Merz’s CDU/CSU and the social democratic SPD, grants the chancellor a stronger role in order to achieve this aim.

    The 144-page document, entitled “Responsibility for Germany” (Verantwortung für Deutschland), prioritises defence, deterrence and strengthening resilience — in military, economic, political and social terms.

    EU partners expect leadership from the new German government and a stronger commitment from Merz in particular, because of his first-hand experience as a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1994. Merz is certainly committed to European integration and to the EU, which is mentioned in the coalition agreement as “a guarantor of freedom, peace, security and prosperity”.

    The coalition agreement emphasises closing ranks with the European partners. Merz cemented this commitment by visiting Paris and Warsaw the day after taking office to announce a reboot of the “Weimar triangle” – a regional allegiance between France, Germany and Poland created in 1991 – as a commitment to what he sees as Germany’s two most important European partners.

    There are strong elements of continuity between this government’s approach to Europe and that of its predecessor. There remains an unwavering commitment to the EU and NATO and comprehensive support for Ukraine. What is, however, new, is the strong emphasis on defence in the coalition agreement.

    “We want to be able to defend ourselves, so that we don’t have to defend ourselves,” the document states.

    With this in mind, a long-held conservative ambition is being realised — the creation of a national security council (Bundessicherheitsrat) within the federal chancellery. This gives the chancellor a stronger role in foreign policy.

    In addition, the new minister for foreign affairs, Johann Wadephul, is a Merz loyalist from the CDU. Traditionally, this was a role held by the junior coalition partner. This new situation, in which the chancellor and minister for foreign affairs are from the same party, plus the new national security council, means that power is concentrated in the chancellery.

    Further afield

    Beyond the immediate neighbourhood, positioning Germany towards the US, China and Israel are high on the agenda. In line with the German “Staatsräson” – an element of foreign policy that recognises Israel’s right to exist and sees Israeli security as a German national interest.

    Merz announced in February 2025 that he is willing to find “means and ways” to welcome the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Berlin. This despite the the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against him. Such a visit would be a breach with the strong German tradition of rule of law and the respect for multilateral institutions.

    Merz is also known to be a transatlanticist and his camp had already reached out to the US administration before taking office. Tariff wars are detrimental to the German economy given the strong dependence on exports to the US. It is similar for China, another important trading partner, but also a “systemic rival” which requires a sound “de-risking” strategy.

    Yet, given the destructive Trump presidency and the insecurity when it comes to the US commitment to European security, a policy towards the US will be paramount. Strengthening relations with the UK in cooperation with the EU partners is meant to go some way to balancing the lack of US support, especially in relation to Ukraine.

    Merz appears willing to take up these challenges and to focus his chancellorship on EU and foreign policy. It helps that the conservative European People’s Party (of which the CDU/CSU is a member) currently dominates the European Parliament and that the powerful position of European Commission president is currently held by a German, in the form of Ursula von der Leyen.

    Yet the ballot fiasco in the national parliament shows that Merz is more vulnerable at home than he would like to be. This may end up frustrating his ambition to lead change in Europe.

    Merz also still needs to win the trust of ordinary Germans, too. He is not a popular chancellor. Less than 40% Germans have trust in him and women especially dislike his style. In addition to efficient policymaking, he will need to improve on his pointed and polarising communicative style if he is to reach out to the people.

    WUHAN, May 9 (Xinhua) — “The Soviet volunteer pilots not only fought for China’s liberation, but also for peace and justice for all mankind,” Xu Ziyue, a graduate student at Jianghan University, said at a commemorative event for fallen Soviet volunteer pilots held in Jiefang Park (Liberation Park) in Wuhan, central China’s Hubei Province, in early April.

    According to park administration employee Wang Bin, during the three-day weekend of the traditional Chinese holiday Qingming (All Souls’ Day), which lasted from April 4 to 6 this year, about 40,000 people came to the park to honor the memory of fallen Soviet volunteer pilots.

    “People regularly and voluntarily come to the monument to Soviet martyrs in our park. Many of them lay flowers there,” he noted.

    In Jiefang Park stands an 8-meter-tall marble obelisk with ten gilded Chinese characters carved into the front of its base: “Tomb of the Fallen Soviet Volunteer Pilots.” The inscription, engraved in Chinese and Russian on the back of the monument, reads: “Eternal glory to the Soviet volunteer pilots who died in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.” The front of the granite monument lists the names of the fallen heroes, the oldest of whom was 33 years old at the time of his death, and the youngest only 24.

    In 1938-1939, major air battles broke out over the city of Wuhan, during which Chinese and Soviet pilots fought shoulder to shoulder against the Japanese invaders. Many Soviet pilots died during these battles. Some of the fallen were buried in the local park “Wanguo” /”Ten Thousand States”/. In 1956, their remains were reburied in a new cemetery for fallen Soviet heroes, which was built according to the Soviet model. A marble slab with the names of 15 fallen Soviet aces was erected there.

    In 2015, 14 more Soviet volunteer pilots were confirmed to have lost their lives in the air battles over Wuhan. Their names also appeared on the tombstone, bringing the total number of fallen Soviet volunteer pilots buried there to 29.

    Wang Bin said the park administration is constantly working on the protection and restoration of the monument and organizing educational services for group visitors.

    Next to the obelisk there is also a permanent exhibition dedicated to Soviet volunteer pilots. Local military fan Yan Heng actively participated in the formation of the exhibit.

    According to him, as a child he often went to Jiefang Park, where he learned about the heroism of Soviet volunteer pilots in the fight against the Japanese invaders. “I was told that heroes from the USSR who died defending our city are buried here. Their lives were cut short at a very young age. This touched me very much,” he emphasized.

    He noted that in 2017, the local newspaper Changjiang Ribao published an article about collecting items from around the world for the exhibition collection. He decided to come to the rescue so that more people could learn about the stories of Soviet volunteer pilots.

    In 2018, Yang Heng visited Moscow and received a huge amount of information and historical materials. After returning to Wuhan, he began organizing the exhibition.

    To make the exhibition more rich, Yang Heng’s team decided to recreate the real life of Soviet volunteer pilots during those war years using a multimedia installation and decorations.

    “I hope that more people today will learn about this history and cherish peace,” Yang Heng explained.

    In addition to the efforts of ordinary people to preserve the memory of Soviet volunteer pilots, work in this direction in China is also being carried out at the legislative and governmental levels.

    In 2013, China issued the Regulations on the Protection and Management of War Memorial Sites. The document states that war memorial sites of national importance may include monuments to famous foreign citizens who died in the name of China’s revolutionary struggle. The document stipulates the need to protect and manage historical monuments within the war memorial sites.

    One such site is the grave of the commander of a squadron of Soviet bombers, Grigory Kulishenko, which is located in the Wanzhou district of the city of central subordination of Chongqing /Southwest China/. Grigory Kulishenko died on October 14, 1939, in a battle over Wuhan at the age of 36.

    According to the administration of the Wanzhou Martyrs’ Memorial Park, more than 100 memorial events are held here every year, and the grave of the fallen Soviet hero is visited by an average of 300,000 people a year.

    Chen Anmin, associate professor at the Institute of History and Culture at Southwest University, stressed that the Chinese people and government always appreciate the Soviet Union’s just assistance in resisting the Japanese invaders and remember the great deeds of Soviet heroes.

    “The restoration and careful protection of memorial structures to Soviet fallen heroes testify to the fact that the Chinese people correctly and soberly assess history and value justice and friendship.     NANNING, May 9 (Xinhua) — The China-Cambodia (Nanning) rubber production base was officially opened on Thursday in Nanning, capital of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

    The new base aims to deepen industrial cooperation and strengthen cross-border trade with Southeast Asian countries.

    Located in the Nanning Comprehensive Bonded Zone, the 7,500 square meter factory building houses a rubber mixing production line with an annual capacity of 24,000 tons, as well as a research and development center and a finished product warehouse. The project was realized with joint investment from Cambodia and Thailand.

    Technical support and management of the facility is provided by a team of experts from Thailand.

    The base is expected to achieve an annual industrial output of 1.08 billion yuan (about 149.8 million US dollars) by 2026, with annual tax revenue of at least 54 million yuan.

    Nanning Vice Mayor Zhong Hong noted that it took only 79 days from planning to launch of the project, demonstrating Nanning’s determination to support investment from ASEAN countries.

    According to him, the base will become a key centre for rubber processing and trade in raw materials, targeting ASEAN countries.

    In the first quarter of this year, ASEAN remained China’s largest trading partner with a turnover of 1.71 trillion yuan, up 7.1 percent year on year and accounting for 16.6 percent of China’s total foreign trade. -0-

    BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) — China’s foreign trade has shown resilience and steady growth since the beginning of the year despite challenges from the external environment, official data showed on Friday.

    According to the General Administration of Customs (GAC) of China, in April 2025, China’s total import and export volume of goods increased by 5.6 percent year-on-year.

    China’s exports rose 9.3 percent year-on-year to 2.27 trillion yuan (about $314 billion) in April 2025, while imports rose 0.8 percent to 1.57 trillion yuan.

    “Thanks to the concerted efforts of various regions and departments, China’s foreign trade has maintained steady growth since the beginning of the year in the face of external shocks,” said Lu Daliang, director of the Statistics and Analysis Department of the National Bureau of Statistics of the People’s Republic of China.

    In the first four months of this year, China’s total foreign trade in goods in yuan terms increased by 2.4 percent year-on-year to 14.14 trillion yuan.

    According to the data from the State Customs Administration of China, during the reporting period, China’s exports grew by 7.5 percent year-on-year to 8.39 trillion yuan, while imports fell by 4.2 percent to 5.75 trillion yuan.

    As noted by Wan Zhe, an expert from Beijing Normal University, the stable growth of China’s foreign trade in January-April fully reflects the stability of the country’s economy.

    The particularly impressive growth in foreign trade in April this year highlights China’s ability to quickly adapt to trade disputes and supply chain shocks, she added.

    According to the data from the General Customs Office of China, the growth rate of China’s trade turnover in April accelerated by 4.3 percentage points compared with the first quarter.

    As Wan Zhe emphasized, China’s recent foreign trade performance, exceeding market expectations, has confirmed the indispensability of China’s manufacturing sector in global supply chains.

    Data from the National Customs Office of China also shows that the structural improvement of foreign trade continues. In January-April 2025, China’s exports of electromechanical equipment increased by 9.5 percent year-on-year to 5.04 trillion yuan, accounting for 60.1 percent of the country’s total merchandise exports during the period.

    According to Lyu Daliang, high-tech products showed outstanding results, with their total trading volume in the four months amounting to 1.52 trillion yuan, up 7.4 percent year on year.

    ASEAN retained its status as China’s largest trading partner in January-April this year. During this period, trade turnover between China and ASEAN countries reached 2.38 trillion yuan, up 9.2 percent year-on-year.

    During the same period, China’s trade turnover with the EU grew by 1.1 percent to 1.78 trillion yuan, and with countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative by 3.9 percent to 7.25 trillion yuan.

    According to the data, China’s trade turnover with the United States fell by 2.1 percent year-on-year to 1.44 trillion yuan during the reporting period. -0-

    BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) — The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s top legislature, on Friday launched a new round of inspection on the implementation of the Food Safety Law, aiming to strengthen supervision over food safety and further intensify overall efforts to ensure food safety.

    The Food Safety Law was promulgated and put into effect in 2009, and underwent a comprehensive revision in 2015. The NPC Standing Committee previously conducted inspections on the law’s implementation in 2009, 2011 and 2016.

    During this latest round of inspection, the inspection team will conduct on-site assessments in provincial-level regions such as Heilongjiang, Shanghai, Jiangxi, Henan, Guangxi and Gansu.

    In addition, the standing committees of the people’s congresses of Tianjin, Liaoning, Anhui, Hubei, Guizhou and Qinghai will be instructed to inspect the law enforcement situation in their respective administrative regions.

    The inspection teams will focus on eight key areas, including the establishment of a food safety risk monitoring and assessment system, supervision of food safety in schools and supervision of food imports and exports.

    Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko congratulated Russians on Victory Day and recalled the important role of Soviet teachers, lecturers, scientists and athletes during the Great Patriotic War.

    “In the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and in the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland, declared by President Vladimir Putin, it is especially important to treat the memory of the exploits of our heroes with care. Soviet teachers during the war, despite all the difficulties, remained true to their high mission. They taught in the most difficult conditions, shared knowledge and warmth, and created new methods. All this testifies to the resilience of the Soviet education system and the heroism of teachers,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

Within the framework of it, everyone will be able to learn the real stories of heroic teachers who fought at the front. The project’s videos will tell about teachers who built bridges under fire, were on the battlefields near Stalingrad, repeated the feat of Alexander Matrosov, saved hundreds of pupils of an orphanage for the disabled, and ensured the crossing of children and teenagers on foot to the Soviet rear across the front line.

    In addition, Dmitry Chernyshenko recalled the achievements of Soviet scientists, inventors, university professors and students during the Great Patriotic War.     Students of physical education institutes enlisted in the army in whole courses. For example, in 1941, combat units and subdivisions were formed at the Moscow Institute of Physical Education, which later heroically fought near Moscow and contributed to the salvation of the capital. Seven students and teachers of the institute were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

    Almost all of the students of the Leningrad Institute of Physical Education named after P.F. Lesgaft, led by the rector, stood up to defend their city, and later fought behind enemy lines and on other fronts. In 1942, this university was the only civilian university in the country to be awarded the military Order of the Red Banner.

    In addition, in the first months of the war, a unique unit was created – the Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade for Special Purposes. It included more than 800 athletes, including honored masters of sports, champions and record holders of the country. Among them were track and field athletes brothers Seraphim and Georgy Znamensky, speed skater Anatoly Kapchinsky, boxer Nikolay Korolev and others.

    The Moscow Metro is turning 90 years old and has expanded significantly since 2010.

    On May 15, the Moscow Metro turns 90, reflecting its remarkable growth and development over nearly a century. The first metro line, launched in 1935, ran for 11.2 kilometers and included 13 stations, serving 177,000 passengers daily. Today, the Moscow Metro has over 550 kilometers of lines and 302 stations, including the Moscow Central Circle (MCC), and daily passenger traffic exceeds 8.2 million trips.

  • MIL-OSI China: China, Russia pledge to join forces against bullying, power politics

    MOSCOW, May 9 — China will work with Russia to shoulder the special responsibilities entrusted by the times, Chinese President Xi Jinping told his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during their talks here on Thursday, as global uncertainties are exerting more pressure on the global economy.

    Today, in the face of unilateralist countercurrents, bullying and acts of power politics, China is working with Russia to shoulder the special responsibilities of major countries and permanent members of the UN Security Council, Xi said.

    Putin, for his part, criticized the imposition of high tariffs, saying it defies common sense, has no legal basis, and will only backfire.

    In early April, the United States rolled out so-called “reciprocal” tariffs against almost all of its trading partners worldwide, triggering widespread opposition and concerns over a possible global economic recession. Many countries have vowed to retaliate.

    On Thursday, the European Commission launched a public consultation targeting U.S. imports worth 95 billion euros (107.2 billion U.S. dollars), warning that retaliatory measures could take effect if ongoing negotiations with the United States over the so-called “reciprocal” tariffs fail to yield an agreement.

    A meeting on economic and trade affairs between Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will take place at the request of the U.S. side, during He’s May 9-12 visit to Switzerland. China’s Commerce Ministry stressed that China will not seek to reach any agreement at the expense of sacrificing its principles or the cause of international fairness and justice.

    Following their Thursday talks, Xi and Putin signed a joint statement on further deepening the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era. In the document, China and Russia voice firm opposition against unilateral and unlawful restrictive measures such as trade and financial restrictions.

    The statement said that certain countries, under various pretexts, have arbitrarily imposed tariffs on their trading partners, seriously infringing upon the legitimate rights and interests of other countries, gravely violating WTO rules, severely undermining the rules-based multilateral trading system, and profoundly disrupting the stability of the global economic order.

    The two countries condemned acts of bypassing the UN Security Council to implement measures that violate the UN Charter and international law, obstruct justice and violate the rules of the WTO.

    They also pledged to continue to jointly deal with the downward pressure on the world economy, and facilitate the participation of more Global South countries in international and regional trade.

    In today’s world, China and Russia collaborate to establish a more just, sustainable and multipolar world order, said Vladimir Petrovskiy, chief researcher at the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

    To this end, China and Russia have been working closely in mechanisms like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which are vital platforms for Global South countries to address development challenges and promote universal peace, he said.

    Xi is in Moscow for a state visit to Russia and celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War. He and Putin have met over 40 times on various occasions.

    On Thursday, Xi and Putin held back-to-back small-group and large-group talks, and also had a chat over tea at the presidential office in the Kremlin.

    When the two presidents met the press following their talks, Xi described his talks with Putin as “in-depth, cordial and fruitful,” adding that they reached many important new consensuses. Putin said Xi’s visit is of great significance, and will inject strong momentum into the development of bilateral ties.

    The two presidents also witnessed the exchange of over 20 bilateral cooperation documents, covering areas such as global strategic stability, upholding the authority of international law, investment protection, digital economy, quarantine and film cooperation.

    In 2024, trade between China and Russia reached 244.8 billion dollars. China has remained Russia’s largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years.

    Russia-China relations are built on equality and mutual respect, Putin said during talks with Xi. It is neither directed against any third party nor swayed by any transient matters, Putin noted.

    The political trust between Russia and China is unparalleled in the world, said Alexander V. Lomanov, a researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations, Russian Academy of Sciences.

    In this context, there is vast potential to further facilitate the movement not only of tourists, but also of experts, scientists and cultural figures between the two countries, he noted.

    “There is much more we can do to deepen our exchanges,” he said. “The more frequent these interactions become, the stronger our mutual understanding will grow.”

    This year’s May Day holiday, which ran from May 1 to 5, was one of the busiest tourism periods of the year in China, with many tourist attractions using cutting-edge technology to offer visitors unique and unforgettable experiences, from virtual reality equipment providing digital tours to drones creating dramatic patterns in the sky or monitoring crowd density at scenic spots.

    At the Gaolan Museum of Agriculture, robots can be seen interacting with traditional farming tools. It is a fascinating dialogue between ancient and modern times, showing visitors how China’s ancient agricultural civilization has evolved to embrace modern technology.

    “It was a wonderful surprise! I didn’t expect to befriend high technology in an ancient pear orchard,” said one visitor surnamed Zhang, who got a first-hand look at the cutting-edge technology by shaking hands with a robot.

    “His movements were incredibly flexible and he seemed to be listening to me carefully. It was like communicating with a real person,” he said.

    Under the “AI Plus Consumption” initiative outlined in the State Council’s recently released special action plan to promote consumption in the country, the use of AI applications has become ubiquitous in numerous scenarios both online and offline.

    The tourism industry, which is usually associated with scenic views and cultural heritage, is undergoing significant changes thanks to the integration of robotics and advanced technologies.

    A striking illustration of this integration is the recent introduction of exoskeleton robots, which have become particularly popular among mountain climbers and mountaineers. These devices saw a significant surge in demand during the aforementioned vacations on Mount Taishan, a famous scenic area in eastern China’s Shandong Province.

    Li Gang, a senior official with Taishan Cultural Tourism Group, which organizes trips to Mount Taishan, said that in the last few days of the May Day holiday, rentals of exoskeleton robots were particularly busy every day, with some visitors waiting for two hours.

    The use of wearable and lightweight intelligent devices such as exoskeleton robots can reduce the burden on humans as they recognize the user’s intentions and dynamically apply mechanical force to key body parts. Such devices have an instantaneous traction force of 200 kg and an eight-hour endurance.

    With Mount Tai’s scenic beauty and cultural heritage evident on the steepest sections of its hiking trails, exoskeleton robots have proven effective in alleviating the discomfort associated with intense physical activity, cutting the expected three-hour climb up the steep mountainside in half.

    As Li Gang noted, during the holiday period, all available exoskeleton robots were fully booked in advance, with a rental price of 80 yuan (about $11) for three hours of “work.” The devices were designed not only to assist with walking, but also to monitor a person’s physical condition in real time and have functions such as emergency calls and landmark information.

    It is no secret that similar robots have been installed at other mountain tourist attractions in provincial-level administrative units such as Hebei, Anhui, Shaanxi, Jiangxi and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

    Chinese travelers made an estimated 314 million domestic trips during the five-day holiday period, with a significant proportion expressing deep satisfaction with new experiences using AI or human-robot interactions.

    In Guangdong province alone, 42 events organized by tech companies or telecom operators showcasing new AI applications attracted more than 2.1 million people.

    The integration of robotics into the tourism industry extends beyond entertainment and support functions and is finding applications in the areas of safety and security.

    A four-wheeled robot named Xiaoyu is currently being tested for patrol and safety inspection in the Grand Canal Cultural and Tourism Zone in Beijing’s Tongzhou District.

    Xiaoyu was designed to provide tourists with timely safety alerts, and can detect smoke and locate fire sources using its built-in thermal imaging and heat-sensing camera. The technology used in the robot can assess the health of trees and detect signs of pests or disease. In the event of an emergency, tourists can press the SOS button on the robot’s shoulder to contact the facility’s staff.

    These innovations are having a profound impact on how Chinese people travel and experience the world around them, from enhancing experiences to improving safety and efficiency. The May Day holiday provided a glimpse into an exciting future where the boundaries between people and technology become blurred, opening up new opportunities for the travel industry.

    Ex-TAC Gross Profit

Ex-TAC gross profit may fluctuate in the future due to various factors, including, but not limited to, seasonality and changes in the number of media partners and advertisers, advertiser demand or user engagements.

    We present Ex-TAC gross profit, Ex-TAC gross margin (calculated as Ex-TAC gross profit as a percentage of revenue), and Adjusted EBITDA as a percentage of Ex-TAC gross profit, because they are key profitability measures used by our management and board of directors to understand and evaluate our operating performance and trends, develop short-term and long-term operational plans, and make strategic decisions regarding the allocation of capital.     CHANGCHUN, May 9 (Xinhua) — The first group of participants in a cross-border car tour in 2025 set off from the Chinese border city of Hunchun, northeast China’s Jilin Province, to Russia on Thursday.

    The event involved 16 people from all over China who drove through the Hunchun checkpoint in cars, starting a 6-day cross-border journey.

    The event will last from May 8 to May 13. During this period, the motorcade will successively arrive in Kraskino, Andreyevka, Slavyanka, Nakhodka and Vladivostok.

    At the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Russia from May 7 to 10 and take part in the celebrations in Moscow dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Russian sinologist, director of the Confucius Institute at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH) Taras Ivchenko (Chinese name – Yi Fucheng) is looking forward to this event with great interest.

    “To deepen cooperation between countries, we must first build a bridge of communication, and language is such a bridge,” Yi Fucheng said figuratively in an exclusive interview with Zhongxin News Agency, speaking about the importance of teaching Chinese for humanitarian exchanges between the two countries. “Our task is to make this bridge even stronger and more reliable.”

    As the director of the first Confucius Institute in Moscow, Yi Fucheng has witnessed the entire process of its development since its founding in 2007. He said that at RSUH, about 400 students study Chinese in various departments, including such specialties as philosophy, linguistics, international relations, political science, cultural studies, and others.     At the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Russia from May 7 to 10 and take part in the ceremonial events in Moscow dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Russian representatives are confident that this visit is of great importance, demonstrates the high level of trust and mutual support between the two countries, and will contribute to the further development of Russian-Chinese relations.

    As reported by the TASS news agency on May 7, the Chairperson of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko emphasized that the state visit of Chairman Xi Jinping to Russia and his participation in the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory have “important historical significance.”

    Matviyenko noted that some countries are trying to distort the historical memory of the victory over fascism and militarism, and Russia and China are jointly opposing these attempts, playing a decisive role in preserving the historical truth for future generations.

    On May 6, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told RIA Novosti, TASS and other leading Russian media outlets that Russian-Chinese relations were at an “unprecedentedly high level” and both sides viewed them as “an example of genuine relations between great powers.” He stressed that President Xi Jinping’s visit was of particular importance and would contribute to the further development of bilateral relations based on “complete mutual trust, equality, mutual benefit and non-targeting of third countries.”

    Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on May 6 that Chairman Xi Jinping’s state visit to Russia and his participation in the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory “once again confirm the unprecedentedly high level of trust, mutual understanding and support that characterizes current Russian-Chinese relations.”

    Zakharova added that Russian-Chinese relations “are comprehensive in nature, are constantly enriched with new constructive content, meet the fundamental interests of the peoples of both countries and enjoy their comprehensive support.” According to her, under the leadership of the leaders of the two countries, Russian-Chinese cooperation will develop steadily in the long term.

    Zakharova also noted that Russia and China are committed to protecting international justice, promoting the central role of the UN, and building a truly equal and fair multipolar world order at various multilateral venues.

    Director of the Institute of China and Modern Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences Kirill Babayev expressed confidence in an interview with the Xinhua news agency that Russian-Chinese cooperation will maintain its positive dynamics, becoming a global example of mutually beneficial cooperation between great powers in all areas.     BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) — While busloads of Russians flock to morning markets in the city of Heihe in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, a significant number of Russian travelers are heading to pristine beaches on the other side of the country in southern China’s Hainan Province after long-haul flights.

    Data from local authorities in Sanya, a resort city in the island province of Hainan, shows that Russian tourists made 173,900 trips to the city in 2024, an eleven-fold increase from the previous year.

    In Sanya’s Dadonghai Bay, the beaches are filled with sunbathing Russians, and even fruit vendors are calling out to potential customers in Russian.

    “The warm climate, abundant sunshine and clear water, as well as the unique tropical climate and seascapes are the key reasons that attract Russian tourists,” said Chen Xiaolei, a local Russian-speaking tour guide.

    In addition to the exotic coastal landscapes, Russian travelers are also attracted by Hainan’s favorable visa-free policy and fast customs clearance.

    The State Immigration Administration (SIA) of the People’s Republic of China has expanded the visa-free entry regime to Hainan for citizens from 59 countries, effective February 9, 2024.

    In July of the same year, the CIU introduced a visa-free regime allowing foreign tourist groups from the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions (SAR) to enter and stay in Hainan for 144 hours, and in December, the transit visa-free stay period for foreigners in Hainan was increased to 240 hours.

    A tourist named Konstantin, who flew to the resort of Sanya on a direct flight from Krasnoyarsk, said: “China’s visa-free regime is incredibly practical and convenient for us. We plan to stay in Sanya for 10 days, which gives us enough time to enjoy the trip.”

    The Sherikovs, a Russian couple celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary in Sanya, said: “The customs clearance process took less than 10 minutes and was much easier than we expected.”

    An expanding international flight network with more direct routes from Russian cities to Sanya has also made the coastal city more accessible.

    In the first quarter of 2025, there were about 500 flights between Russia and Sanya, 400 percent more than in the same period last year. According to the Fenghuang border checkpoint in Sanya, more than 5,000 Russian tourists arrive here every week.

    Huang Xing, head of the Sanya Bureau of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports, said that to improve the experience of foreign tourists, local hotels and scenic spots have installed multilingual signboards in English, Russian and Chinese, facilitated international credit card payments and opened foreign currency exchange offices, and regularly hosted concerts, cultural performances and sports events.

    While enjoying sunbathing, tropical fruits and vibrant nightlife, more Russian tourists are beginning to delve deeper into Chinese culture to get more unique travel experiences in Sanya, such as traditional Chinese medicine treatment, he said.

    Huang Juhai, director of the specialized treatment department of the Druzhba International Sanatorium of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Sanya, said: “TCM is very popular among Russian tourists as the recognition of TCM by foreign visitors has increased significantly.”

    Chen Xiaolei, a local tour guide, said more than half of his Russian clients prefer TCM treatment.

    Vladivostok, May 9 (Xinhua) — A military parade in honor of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War was held in the center of Vladivostok, the capital of the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD), on Friday. About 1,900 people and over 50 units of modern and vintage equipment took part in the parade.

    Before the parade began, the Russian national flag and the Victory Banner were carried out to the central street of the city to the music of “Sacred War”. After that, the Governor of Primorsky Krai Oleg Kozhemyako congratulated those gathered on the holiday and thanked the veterans for their feat.

    The military parade started at 10:00. Commander of the Pacific Fleet Admiral Viktor Liina rode around the parade formation and congratulated the parade participants on the 80th anniversary of the Victory. Those gathered observed a minute of silence in memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War. Artillery guns fired during the performance of the Russian National Anthem.

    The parade procession was opened by a company of Nakhimov drummers. The parade included a group of standard-bearers with the standards of the fronts, parade units in the uniform of infantrymen, pilots and sailors of the wartime, a combined company of Pacific Fleet officers, submariners and sailors of the Primorsky flotilla of the Pacific Fleet’s mixed forces, a combined battalion of the Pacific Fleet’s naval aviation, as well as cadets, border guards, employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service, young army members and members of military-patriotic clubs.

    After the parade companies passed along the central street of the city, a parade of military equipment began, in which more than 50 vehicles took part, including the legendary T-34 tanks, the Soviet heavy self-propelled artillery unit of the Great Patriotic War ISU-152, the modern T-80BV tank, BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, Bal and Bastion coastal missile systems, the Tiger-M special-purpose armored car, the Uran-14 multifunctional robotic complex of engineering troops on a tracked chassis, the Murmansk electronic warfare complex, and other vehicles.

    A joint statement by China and Russia on further deepening the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation in the new era was published following talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russian capital.

    The statement noted that relations between China and Russia have reached the highest level in their history and continue to develop confidently and comprehensively.

    China and Russia, as important trading partners of each other, unanimously note that bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation has made a positive contribution to improving the well-being of the peoples of the two countries, the statement said.

    In order to further promote mutually beneficial cooperation, the parties agreed to promote the stable development of bilateral trade and improve the structure of trade turnover, including by increasing the share of high-tech products and developing innovative methods of electronic commerce.

    Xi Jinping made the statement when he and Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the press following talks in Moscow.

    In the face of global, epochal and historical changes, China and Russia should firmly guide the development trend of bilateral ties and human society, the Chinese president said.

    Noting that the talks with Putin were in-depth, cordial and fruitful, Xi said the two leaders reached new important consensus on many issues, signed a joint statement on further deepening the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era, and witnessed the exchange of a series of documents on bilateral cooperation, which injected new impetus into the development of ties.

    Xi Jinping said this was his 11th visit to Russia, the country he visited most often as China’s president. On Friday, the Chinese leader will attend celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War, his second time in a decade attending the grand commemorative event.

    URUMQI, May 9 (Xinhua) — A special train loaded with mail left the Horgos railway border crossing in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Thursday bound for Kazakhstan’s Burundai Railway Station, marking the first such freight train in the region to operate on the China-Europe international freight rail route.

    The train is carrying 1,038 parcels weighing a total of 17 tons, containing goods sold through cross-border e-commerce, such as clothing, electronics and everyday items. It will take 2-3 days to reach its destination. After arriving in Kazakhstan, the cargo will be distributed to more than 20 European countries.

    Before the new train, existing trains could only deliver a small amount of mail from Xinjiang to Central Asian countries. Now, it will be possible to deliver an average of 30 tons of mail per month.

    According to a representative of one of the local freight forwarding companies, the formation of this channel for the delivery of postal items will provide business opportunities for both domestic foreign trade enterprises and cross-border e-commerce platforms. -0-

    UK and international partners confirm support for Special Tribunal on Crime of Aggression as Foreign Secretary visits Lviv

    Foreign Secretary David Lammy will visit Lviv today in joint show of support for Ukraine, as the UK announces sanctions on 100 ships in the Russian shadow fleet.

    Visiting Lviv to stand in solidarity with Ukraine in their defence against Russia’s illegal invasion, Foreign Secretary David Lammy will join European ministers in the city to hold further talks on securing a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.   

    He will also, alongside representatives of the Core Group of at least 37 countries, announce united and ardent support for the establishment of a Special Tribunal, to hold those responsible for the crime of aggression against Ukraine to account.  

    Today’s events come as the Prime Minister announced a major package of sanctions to target the decrepit and dangerous shadow fleet carrying Russian oil. Our world-leading sanctions have plunged Putin’s ships into crisis. According to some estimates, sanctions have crippled 200 ships – almost half of Putin’s entire fleet.  

    The UK has been clear that the security of the UK, which underpins this government’s Plan for Change, starts in Ukraine. Securing a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and combating Russia’s malign influence around the world mean a safer Britain at home. We are boosting our defence spending , with an increase of £13.4 billion year on year, to respond to these challenges.

    Foreign Secretary, David Lammy said:

    Today – and every day – we stand with Ukraine. We stand for a just and lasting peace, for a secure Europe, and for accountability and justice. I have been supportive of a Special Tribunal to prosecute Russia’s leaders for their war of aggression since March 2022, just weeks after Putin’s full-scale invasion. This was a key manifesto commitment and as soon as we came into government, we made it a top priority.

    We stand against Putin, against his stalling and backtracking on peace, and against his dodgy shadow fleet of oil tankers. We are determined to sink his failing ambition to fund his illegal war through them – that is why we have today unleashed the largest package of sanctions against them, with 110 targets.

    We call on Russia to drop the gimmicks and agree to an unconditional ceasefire as Ukraine has done. Those standing with Putin today in Moscow should reflect on the lessons of history: peace will always prevail and aggressors will never be allowed to succeed.

    Through our 100 Year Partnership, this government’s Plan for Change and our ongoing military and diplomatic support, the UK’s commitment to Ukraine is stronger than ever.

    The Foreign Secretary will join 17 other foreign ministers and Ukrainian Minister for Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha to discuss the next steps for an enduring peace in Europe. European ministers will make clear that they are united in support of Ukraine and its clear commitment to peace, and condemn Putin’s stalling, backtracking and ongoing bombardment of Ukrainian civilians.  

    The Special Tribunal meeting is a milestone moment, as we now have the legal foundations for a Tribunal, following the culmination of more than two years of careful and complex negotiations among at least 37 states to deliver a united position on justice and accountability. The government is delivering on its manifesto, and the UK is building on its commitments as part of the UK-Ukraine 100 Year Partnership.  

    The UK will also provide nearly £25 million in new funding to support local Ukrainian organisations protect the most vulnerable who continue to suffer from Russia’s ongoing aggression.   

    This includes £10 million to HAVEN to protect and evacuate civilians in frontline areas where Russian attacks continue and £5 million to Mercy Corps so they can support local organisations to meet people’s basic needs as quickly as possible in an emergency. £9.4 million will go to the Ukrainian Red Cross who continue to build up Ukraine’s country-wide emergency response to urgent humanitarian needs. Some of this funding will improve access to and the quality of recovery and rehabilitation services, including for veterans.  

    The Foreign Secretary’s visit comes as Ukrainian grain and other food produce, supported by £3 million provided by the UK for the World Food Programme to send produce to Syria, arrives in Türkiye to be distributed worldwide. This Ukrainian produce provides a lifeline to the most vulnerable around the world including in Syria with Ukrainian grain crucial for global food security. In stark contrast, Russia repeatedly attacked Ukrainian port infrastructure and ships and has imposed conditions on a Black Sea ceasefire.  

    Today’s meeting in Lviv highlights the strength of European unity. Today, and its historical importance, should service as a reminder that peace, respect of sovereignty, and justice will always prevail.  

    The British people have never once wavered in their support for Ukraine. Supporting them means defending our shared democratic values and Ukraine’s right to determine its own future in a free and peaceful Europe.

    80th anniversary of VE Day: UK statement to the OSCE

    Ambassador Holland reflects on the framework for stability that we have collectively built since the end of WW2 which, when respected, has the potential to prevent further conflict.

    Thank you, Madam Chair.  This week marks the 80th anniversary of the end, on the European continent, of the most devastating conflict in human history.  The scale of human loss and suffering during the Second World War was vast: tens of millions of people killed; a Holocaust resulting in the destruction of Europe’s Jewish communities; entire cities and regions totally flattened; and, populations permanently displaced.

    This week is an opportunity to pay tribute to the brave men and women who fought to end this war and who made peace possible.  It is an opportunity to reflect on the terrible costs of conflict.  But it is also an opportunity to recall and cherish what we have collectively built since this dark episode in our shared history.

    Because, from the ashes of war, a new epoch was born, one with international collaboration and shared values at its core.  It led to the creation of new institutions, principles and commitments that have played a pivotal role in maintaining peace and stability across our continent and beyond for decades.  In declaring a vision to make war between historic rivals not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible, Robert Schuman captured the spirit of the time.

    Key elements of this framework include the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act and the Charter of Paris.  They clearly set out how we should expect countries to behave towards each other and to their citizens.  These fundamentals – such as sovereignty, territorial integrity and respect for human rights – have proven, when respected, to be a recipe for stability, prosperity and mutual security.  It should be no surprise that, when we examine the conflicts that have taken place on our continent since 1945, all of them can trace their origins to a violation of one or more of these fundamental principles.

    Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is a clear example.  Russia invaded Ukraine without provocation, in violation of the UN Charter and Helsinki Final Act.  This war, and the disinformation campaign that seeks to justify it, disrespects the memory of those who died fighting genuine tyranny.  It could end tomorrow if Russia made the right choices and lived up to its commitments.  Instead of tokenistic ceasefires drawn up at whim, it could choose to engage seriously and agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, as Ukraine has done, to create space for talks on a just and lasting peace.  As the post-Second World War record shows, a just peace that lives up to these principles would be the best guarantee of our mutual security, including Russia’s.

    The sacrifices made by previous generations compel us to protect and stand by the principles we have all signed up to. It is our duty to preserve the legacy they fought so hard to achieve.  And to spare our own and future generations from the burden of picking through the ashes of conflict to rebuild our continent once again.
