Scottish Green MSP Ross Greer has joined members of the Ukrainian community in Scotland and the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign at a protest outside the Glasgow HQ of shipping company Seapeak, over their role in helping Russia to export gas despite the sanctions placed on it over Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Seapeak has been found to still ship over $5.5 billion of Russian Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) each year.

Ross Greer will be speaking at the rally in Glasgow today. He has previously demanded that the UK Government sanction Seapeak, but Labour Ministers have so far refused to take action.

Ross said:

“It is appalling that the UK Labour government refuses to shut Seapeak down. People across Scotland are horrified when they learn that a company based here continues to fund Russia’s war machine. For as long as Seapeak remains untouched from sanctions, they will continue to ship gas out of Russia, throwing a lifeline to Putin’s war economy as a result.”

In 2022, Ross was sanctioned by the Russian government for his work in solidarity with Ukraine.

Ross said:

“Earlier this year, I wrote to UK Ministers, demanding that they shut down Seapeak’s UK operations. Despite the overwhelming evidence shared with them, they would not take action. They continue to allow Russia to profit from shipping operations here in the UK whilst claiming to stand with Ukraine.

“Tens of thousands of Ukrainians have been killed and much of their country is left in ruins from Putin’s illegal invasion. If we were in Ukraine’s position, we would rightly be furious that our so-called allies were allowing complicit businesses like Seapeak to stay open. It is time to end this scandal and prove that Putin’s enablers are not welcome in Scotland.”

QINGDAO, July 9 (Xinhua) — The first conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on standardization cooperation was held in Qingdao, east China’s Shandong Province, on Tuesday, marking the establishment of the first standardization cooperation mechanism within the SCO to provide institutional guarantees for such cooperation within the organization.

The event was jointly initiated by the State Administration for Market Regulation of the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart).

The conference participants held an in-depth exchange of views on the creation of a mechanism for cooperation in the field of standardization within the SCO, strengthening cooperation on standardization in key areas, creating an information platform on standardization and building capacity in this area.

Following the event, the Qingdao Initiative was adopted to strengthen cooperation between national standardization bodies of the SCO member states.

As experts point out, the conference will help to build an information platform for SCO member states on standardization, facilitate the creation of working groups on cooperation in the field of technical standards in key areas, promote cooperation on standardization within the SCO in such important areas as artificial intelligence and low-altitude economics, and facilitate the alignment of standards between the countries of the organization. -0-

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Wednesday called on the European Union (EU) to take a more objective and rational approach to China and pursue a more positive and pragmatic policy toward it.

Mao Ning made the statement at a regular press conference, commenting at the request of the media on recent statements by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding relations between China and the EU.

Noting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, Mao Ning stressed that this is an important year for continuing the good traditions of bilateral relations and opening the way for their future development.

The diplomat called on the EU to truly develop a more objective and rational understanding of China and pursue a more positive and pragmatic policy towards it.

“China hopes that the EU will realize the need to rebalance its own thinking, not the trade and economic relations between China and the EU,” Mao Ning said.

XI’AN, July 9 (Xinhua) — When Dilnaz from Kazakhstan received her master’s degree in late June this year, her entire student life in China flashed before her eyes. During her two years of master’s studies, she had the opportunity to study at two campuses of Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU): one in Almaty and the other in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province (Northwest China), a distance of more than 3,000 kilometers.

Studying in two countries was an amazing and unforgettable experience, Dilnaz said. It was made possible by the launch of an international education program two years ago at SZPU, a renowned engineering university in China.

Let us recall that in May 2023, within the framework of the first China-Central Asia summit, an agreement was signed between NWPU and the Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi /KazNU/ to open a Kazakhstani branch of NWPU. Already in October of the same year, eight Kazakhstani students, including Dilnaz, became the first master’s students of this branch in Almaty. They studied in the specialties of materials science, information and communication engineering, computer science and technology, which are the strongest disciplines at NWPU.

In recent years, as China deepens cooperation with Central Asian countries under the Belt and Road Initiative, education has become a key area of bilateral cooperation. A number of Chinese universities have opened branches in Central Asian countries, giving new impetus to the development of higher education cooperation between China and Central Asia.

For example, in July 2024, a branch of Beijing Language and Culture University was officially opened in Kazakhstan, and in the same month, a branch of Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University was opened in Tashkent, which became the first Chinese university branch in Uzbekistan. In May of this year, Xi’an University of Architecture and Civil Engineering and Osh Technological University of Kyrgyzstan (OshTU) signed an agreement in Xi’an to establish an architectural institute at OshTU.

In the more than 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the five Central Asian countries, bilateral relations have achieved leaps and bounds, as evidenced by the continuous strengthening of political mutual trust and the intensification of trade and economic exchanges and people-to-people contacts, which has created conditions for the opening of branches of Chinese universities in Central Asian countries, noted Gu Wei, a research fellow at the Institute of International Studies of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.

According to her, the entry of Chinese universities into the international arena with the establishment of foreign branches meets the needs of Central Asian countries in training highly qualified personnel and will contribute to the deepening of cooperation between China and Central Asian countries.

In May 2025, SZPU, together with KazNU, established the China-Kazakhstan Elite Engineering Institute, signing an agreement on joint training of bachelors in artificial intelligence under the “2 2” scheme with the issuance of double diplomas. This project became a new breakthrough for the two universities in the field of training specialists, creating a new architecture of high-level international cooperation.

“These achievements clearly demonstrate the deep coordination and joint development of the parties in the field of training specialists and scientific and innovative activities, actively promoting cultural mutual enrichment and scientific cooperation,” noted Vice-Rector of SZPU Yue Xiaokui.

As the Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China Huai Jinpeng reported in May at the first Meeting of Ministers of Education “China-Central Asia”, at present more than 18 thousand young people from Central Asia are studying in Chinese universities. -0-

CAIRO, July 9 (Xinhua) — China and Egypt, as important members of the Global South, should further strengthen strategic coordination to safeguard common interests, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said on Wednesday upon his arrival in Cairo for an official visit to Egypt at the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly.

Noting that China and Egypt are ancient civilizations, the Chinese premier said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties nearly 70 years ago, the two countries have remained close friends who support each other and strategic partners with a shared destiny.

In recent years, under the strategic leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, China-Egypt relations have flourished, their traditional friendship has become stronger over time, political mutual trust has deepened, practical cooperation has yielded fruitful results, and multilateral coordination has become increasingly close and effective, he said.

Almaty, July 9 /Xinhua/ — Seventy percent of all Chinese companies registered in Kazakhstan operate in Almaty, the Kazinform news agency reported on Wednesday, citing a speech by Almaty Deputy Akim Olzhas Smagulov at the Qazaq Invest Forum-2025.

The official said that Almaty is ready to become a key investment conductor for Chinese partners. The exemplary relations between the leadership of the two countries and the full support of the Almaty city administration create a solid foundation for long-term cooperation.

Vladivostok, July 9 (Xinhua) — Forest fires in Russia’s Zabaikalsky Krai, which have been raging since the start of the fire season, have been completely extinguished, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday, citing the region’s Ministry of Natural Resources.

The fire season in 2025 in Zabaikalsky Krai was declared on March 24, when the first forest fire occurred in the region. NEW DELHI, July 9 (Xinhua) — At least nine people were killed and more than six injured on Wednesday when several vehicles fell into a river after a bridge collapsed in India’s western Gujarat state, local police said.

A section of the 40-year-old Gambhira Bridge collapsed on Wednesday morning, disrupting road connectivity between Anand and Vadodara.

MIL-OSI Europe: Press release – Parliament condemns Russia’s brutal attacks on Ukrainian civilians

In a resolution, MEPs strongly condemn Russia’s ongoing war crimes in Ukraine, expressing firm support for the investigations of the International Criminal Court.

The text, approved on Wednesday by 507 votes in favour, 77 against, and with 45 abstentions, states that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which was launched in February 2022, has shattered peace and stability in Europe and gravely undermined global security. It underscores that Russia remains the most significant and direct threat to European security. MEPs emphasise that Russia bears sole responsibility for its war of aggression and that there can be no impunity for violations of human rights, war crimes, or other breaches of international law committed by Russian forces and officials. They also express deep outrage at Russia’s brutal attacks on civilians and the indiscriminate targeting of civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, stressing that the systematic and deliberate targeting of civilians and, in particular, the deportation of children may constitute a genocidal strategy orchestrated by Moscow.

More than 70 000 Ukrainians are missing

With the human cost of Russia’s war rising day by day, the resolution states that Russia is still committing heinous war crimes against innocent civilians. According to the Ukrainian authorities, approximately 16 000 Ukrainian civilians are currently known to be detained in Russia and the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, although the real figures are likely to be significantly higher. MEPs also highlight that more than 70 000 Ukrainians – including civilians, children, and military personnel – are officially listed as missing. They strongly condemn the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by Russian forces, which they say constitutes war crimes and grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions. They also express full support the International Criminal Court’s ongoing investigations into the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Russia and welcome the recent agreement between the Council of Europe and Ukraine on the establishment of a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.

Russia must be pressured to end its war of aggression

Saying that all those responsible for war crimes perpetrated in Ukraine must be held accountable, MEPs also urge Russia to agree immediately to implement a comprehensive ‘all-for-all’ exchange of POWs. They believe that in order to pressure Russia to end its war of aggression, beginning with a sustained ceasefire, substantially more effective military, economic, political and diplomatic efforts and measures must be applied by the EU and like-minded partners. They also urge the EU to push ahead with the confiscation of immobilised Russian state assets in order to support Ukraine, saying that the legal pathways to do so are available, and that the lack of action is an inexcusable failure on the part of European governments.

Three reports adopted on Wednesday highlight the urgent need for EU-related reforms, effective use of the Growth Plan and a decisive stance against foreign interference.

Albania

MEPs highlight Albania’s broad political consensus and strong public support for joining the EU, alongside full alignment with the EU’s foreign and security policy. While welcoming Albania’s aim to complete accession talks by 2027 and the progress already made, MEPs stress the urgent need to intensify reforms. Key priorities include strengthening judicial independence, combating corruption and organised crime, and protecting fundamental rights. Enhancing media pluralism and transparency remains crucial to build public trust, say MEPs.

The report notes ongoing political polarisation marked by confrontational rhetoric and calls for more constructive and inclusive political dialogue. It also urges authorities to continue their efforts to safeguard judicial independence and increase accountability.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Parliament reaffirms its strong support for BiH’s EU accession bid, emphasising a merit-based process aligned with the Copenhagen criteria and grounded in the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Welcoming the European Council’s decision to open accession negotiations with BiH amid the changing geopolitical landscape following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, MEPs acknowledge key reforms but express concern over stalled progress and weak implementation. The report calls for implementation of the necessary constitutional and electoral reforms, and for efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and the rule of law, and to fight corruption and organised crime.

MEPs strongly condemn divisive rhetoric and secessionist policies, particularly those promoted by Milorad Dodik and the Republika Srpska leadership, calling on the EU to take decisive action, including targeted sanctions, to counter destabilising forces threatening the country’s stability and European security. The report also stresses concerns about malign foreign interference and disinformation campaigns by foreign actors, notably Russia and China, that erode public trust in the EU.

Rapporteur Ondřej Kolář (EPP, CS) said: “The future of the Balkans lies within Europe, not under Russian domination. Bosnia and Herzegovina is in the most difficult situation in Europe after Ukraine, and we must find a way to help it achieve full integration into Western structures. North Macedonia

MEPs welcome the new €750 million Reform and Growth Facility, commending North Macedonia’s ambitious agenda. They urge it to adopt a strong focus on reform implementation, particularly in public administration, governance, the rule of law, and anti-corruption policy. Noting worsening trends in high-level corruption and low public trust in the judiciary, they call for stronger judicial independence, more accountability, and adequate resources for oversight bodies.

The Parliament is deeply concerned that North Macedonia and other EU accession countries in the Western Balkans are being particularly hard hit by foreign interference and disinformation campaigns. It is also alarmed by the roles of the Hungarian Government and the Serbian Government in advancing China’s and Russia’s geopolitical objectives, states the resolution.

LHASA, July 9 (Xinhua) — More than 300 people, including Nepalese nationals, affected by a landslide in Gyirong County on the China-Nepal border have been evacuated, the county government of southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region said Wednesday.

On Tuesday at 05:46, a landslide occurred near the Gyirong checkpoint. As a result of the incident, 11 people on the Chinese side went missing. After receiving the information, local authorities immediately launched a search and rescue operation.

The evacuees included 90 Nepalese businessmen and workers, 46 residents of Gyirong village, 61 construction workers, 11 traders, two tourists, and border customs and passport control officers. They were all provided with basic necessities and rooms in local hotels.

MIL-OSI Russia: Double success: the first graduates of SPbPU and Lanzhou University of Economics and Finance received diplomas

The Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade of SPbPU hosted the first graduation of bachelors of the international educational double degree program with Lanzhou University of Economics and Finance (China).

The defense of final qualification works in the direction of “Economics” (profile “Finance”) was held in English on the campus of Lanzhou University of Economics and Finance in Gansu Province. Students presented the results of their research on current issues of finance, economic analysis and investment management. Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine continues to have a devastating impact on children: UK statement to the OSCE

Deputy Ambassador James Ford condemns the grave violations Russian armed forces and authorities have committed against children in Ukraine, including through attacks on schools and hospitals.
Thank you, Madam Chair. Thank you, Mr Chair. I would also like to thank the speakers for their insights on the important and emotive topic we are dealing with today.

The United Kingdom is deeply concerned about the worsening situation for children in conflicts around the world. More grave violations against children were verified by the UN than ever before in 2024, and instances of rape and other forms of sexual violence against children increased by 35% compared to 2023.

Regrettably, Madam Chair, our own region has not been immune from this trend. Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine continues to have a harrowing effect on Ukraine’s 7.5 million children – on their health, education, family life and prospects for their futures.

In 1999, UN Security Council Resolution 1261 defined ‘Six Grave Violations’ most frequently affecting children in times of war. According to the latest UN report on children and armed conflict, there is mounting evidence that Russian authorities and Russian armed forces have committed at least five of these Six Grave Violations in Ukraine. For consecutive years, the UN Secretary General has reported that under two categories – the killing and maiming of children, and attacks on schools and hospitals – the violations committed by Russian armed forces are prolific enough to warrant formal listing in his annual report.

A case in point is the attack on the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv. Yesterday marked one year since a Russian KH-101 cruise missile struck the hospital. It was the biggest children’s medical facility in Ukraine and the country’s primary provider of specialist paediatric care.

According to UNICEF’s report from November 2024, the war has killed or injured over 2,406 children – an average of sixteen children every week. The UN verified 222 cases of children being killed or injured in Ukraine between 1 March and 31 May 2025 – three times more children killed than during the previous quarter. In April this year alone, 97 children were killed or maimed. According to UN statistics, that is the highest monthly number of child casualties since June 2022.

It is not just death or injury that Ukrainian children face on a daily basis. According to the Government of Ukraine, the Russian authorities and armed forces have deported nearly 20,000 Ukrainian children to Russia and the temporarily occupied territories. UN reports detail the treatment of Ukrainian children in these territories. Russian authorities have systematically forced the introduction of Russian language curriculum in schools, as well as ‘military-patriotic’ training. They have also forced Ukrainian children to adopt Russian citizenship. Save the Children estimates that Russian attacks destroyed or damaged 576 education facilities in 2024 – more than double the 256 of the year before.

UN and Save the Children reports also underline that children fleeing the fighting in Ukraine are at significant risk of family separation, abuse, violence, sexual exploitation, and trafficking. Countless people will bear the social and psychological trauma for years to come.

Moscow continues to try to disguise these crimes through a campaign of denial and disinformation. But these abuses have all been verified by independent sources, including the UN, ODIHR and reports commissioned under the OSCE’s Moscow Mechanism.

As we all know, and as the speakers have detailed today, children are uniquely vulnerable and disproportionately affected by conflict. We welcome the OSCE’s work to hold Russia accountable for its actions and to support Ukraine, including through the SPU, the Support Programme for Ukraine. And we call on Russia to cease this unprovoked, illegal war and immediately and unconditionally return forcibly deported children to Ukraine.

Trump criticizes Putin after approving more weapons for Ukraine, Kremlin says it is ‘calm’

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he had approved sending U.S. defensive weapons to Ukraine and was considering additional sanctions on Moscow, underscoring his frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the growing death toll in Russia’s war with Ukraine.

Trump, who pledged as a presidential candidate to end the war within a day, has not been able to follow through on that promise and efforts by his administration to broker peace have come up short.

Trump directed his ire at Putin on Tuesday during a meeting with cabinet officials at the White House.

“I’m not happy with Putin. I can tell you that much right now,” Trump said, noting that Russian and Ukrainian soldiers were dying in the thousands.

“We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin … He’s very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless,” Trump said

Trump said he was considering whether to support a bill in the Senate that would impose steep sanctions on Russia over the war.

“I’m looking at it very strongly,” he said.

The bill, whose lead sponsors are Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, would also punish other countries that trade with Moscow, imposing 500% tariffs on nations that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other exports.

DEFENSIVE WEAPONS AGAINST RUSSIAN ADVANCES

Trump said on Monday that the United States would send more weapons to Ukraine, primarily defensive ones, to help it defend itself against Russian advances. On Tuesday he said he had approved such a move.

“We’re sending some defensive weapons to Ukraine, and I’ve approved that,” he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday he had ordered an expansion of contacts with the United States to ensure critical deliveries of military supplies, primarily air defence.

“We currently have all the necessary political statements and decisions and we must implement them as quickly as possible to protect our people and positions,” he said.

“These are critical deliveries that mean saving lives and protecting Ukrainian cities and villages. I expect results from these contacts very soon. And this week, we are preparing formats for meetings of our military and political teams.”

Zelenskiy has repeatedly urged Ukraine’s Western allies to impose tougher sanctions on Moscow to force the Kremlin to agree to a ceasefire as a step towards reaching an end to the war, now 40 months old.

A decision by the Pentagon to halt some shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine prompted warnings by Kyiv last week that the move would weaken its ability to defend against Russia’s intensifying airstrikes and battlefield advances.

Trump, who was seated next to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, was asked on Tuesday who had ordered that pause.

“I don’t know. Why don’t you tell me?” Trump responded.

The Kremlin, asked on Wednesday about U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that Moscow was “calm” regarding the criticism, and that it would continue to try to fix a “broken” U.S.-Russia relationship.

Trump has in recent days accused Putin of not taking U.S. efforts to reach a peace deal in Ukraine seriously, and suggested that the U.S. will continue supporting Kyiv.

On 9 July 2025 the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) held that Russia is responsible for the downing of flight MH17 and for the deaths of everyone on board, including 196 Dutch nationals. Russia is also responsible for the additional suffering caused to the next of kin, owing to its continued denial of any involvement and its obstruction of the investigations into the downing of the aircraft. The judgment is an important step on the road to justice.

ECtHR and flight MH17

In 2020 the Netherlands submitted an inter-State application to the ECtHR regarding Russia’s responsibility for the downing of flight MH17 on 17 July 2014 over eastern Ukraine. All 298 people on board were killed, including 196 Dutch nationals.

The ECtHR’s judgment

This is the second time in a short period that it has been established at international level that Russia violated international law when it downed flight MH17. The ECtHR ruled in the Netherlands’ favour in regard to Russia’s violation of four human rights, as laid down in the European Convention on Human Rights:
- Russia is responsible for the downing of flight MH17 and the deaths of everyone on board (Article 2, right to life, substantive).
- Russia did not perform an adequate investigation of its own, and did not cooperate sufficiently with requests for information submitted by the Netherlands and the Joint Investigation Team (Article 2, right to life, procedural).
- Russia’s lack of cooperation and continued denial of any involvement in the downing of flight MH17 caused the next of kin additional suffering (Article 3, prohibition of torture and inhuman treatment).
- Russia did not provide the next of kin with any legal remedy (Article 13, right to an effective remedy).
Minister of Foreign Affairs Caspar Veldkamp: ‘The judgment of the European Court of Human Rights is crystal clear: Russia is responsible for the downing of flight MH17 and for the deaths of everyone on board, including 196 Dutch nationals. This confirms what we have known and felt all along, and is an important step on the road to justice.

Russia is also responsible for additional suffering caused to the next of kin, due to its continued denial of any involvement and lack of cooperation. Nothing can take away the grief and suffering, but I hope that this outcome brings a sense of justice and acknowledgement.’

Next steps

Up until now, the proceedings before the ECtHR have been focused on establishing the human rights violations concerned. Now that these have been established, the ECtHR can determine the consequences of the violations and the damages payable. Throughout this process, the Netherlands will remain in close contact with the next of kin about potential damages.

ULAN BATOR, July 9 (Xinhua) — An event titled “Hello, China!” to promote the culture and tourism of Enshi (central China’s Hubei Province) and Huangshan (east China’s Anhui Province) was held at the China Cultural Center in Ulan Bator on Wednesday.

Yesterday, the first Master’s students graduated from two new programs Faculty of Information Technology NSU, launched in 2023, are “Internet of Things” and “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science”. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical objects that can be connected using various technologies and sensors to collect and analyze data. However, to realize all these opportunities and benefits, a qualified team of specialists is needed who have deep knowledge in a wide range of areas, from programming and data analytics to communications technology and security, and also understand the operation of the sensors themselves and the subject area in which they are used.

— IoT is one of the trends in the development of modern IT. When preparing to create and design solutions for the Internet of Things, a master’s student must demonstrate a whole range of knowledge. Firstly, it is necessary to learn how to work in conditions of limited computing performance and electricity, since Internet of Things devices must provide a long battery life. Secondly, in order for your system to work, a computer is not enough, you must ensure the transfer of this data. Thirdly, where we deal with data, the task arises to ensure its safety and protection. I will give an example from the healthcare sector. We all know smart watches that measure the pulse, count the number of steps, etc. In order for them to perform tasks, for example, monitoring the health of the elderly, it is necessary to implement more complex Internet of Things tools. The question arises: since this is personal, medical data, it is necessary to provide for its correct protection. Thus, in order to work in the IoT field, you need to be able to solve a whole range of problems and be an expert in different sections of modern information technology. Within the framework of the new direction, we are training exactly such specialists, — the dean of the NSU FIT, Corresponding Member, spoke about the features of the program. RAS Mikhail Lavrentiev.

The new program is also distinguished by the fact that during their studies, master’s students participate in the implementation of projects that are carried out on order or in cooperation with businesses working in the IoT area. Thus, the university’s partner in organizing the new master’s program was the company “Laboratory of the Internet of Things”, which develops ground equipment for satellite systems, as well as the company YADRO.

Denis Enes, a graduate of the Master’s program “Internet of Things” at the NSU Institute of Information Technologies, shares his impressions of the training:

– I graduated from the NSU FIT Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science and Systems Engineering. At the same time, a new program appeared in the FIT Master’s program – Internet of Things. I wanted to study something new, so I applied. The workload was heavy, especially in the first year, so it was difficult to combine study and work. However, it was worth the effort: as a result, I acquired knowledge that was different from what I received in my Bachelor’s degree, so now I have more opportunities for further career development.

In the second program, “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science,” students received the necessary knowledge to work with artificial intelligence. They learned to develop intelligent solutions by participating in real company projects, as well as to apply AI and Data Science technologies in information and analytical activities for a wide range of areas of the digital economy.

— We have developed a program that allows our master’s students to understand what artificial intelligence is, what needs to be done to make its systems work, how to construct a database, how to estimate the size of the required hardware base that will support the system. So, now AI is increasingly penetrating into people’s everyday lives — these are solutions for automatic face recognition when entering an office or an entrance, recognizing car numbers to open a barrier, garage, etc. Such systems require a minimal hardware base. We are preparing students for the fact that it is necessary not only to build an artificial intelligence system, but to understand what is sufficient to solve a specific range of problems, — explained Mikhail Lavrentyev.

The new educational program is actively supported by partners, including Postgres Professional, YADRO, institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and other companies.

Ilya Stetsky:

— Studying on the program was very interesting and useful. If before admission I thought that neural networks were something narrow, then during the master’s program this area was presented more broadly, from different sides, I discovered different areas of AI application. In general, the training was comprehensive and deep. In the future, I plan to work in the field of real-time data stream processing.

Chinese student Aisaiti Baishan:

— I am very glad that I spent these two years in Akademgorodok! Before NSU, I studied at Chongqing University. I decided to enroll here because NSU is very famous in China, everyone knows that it has a high level of education, including in mathematics and IT, and professional teachers. I plan to return home to China and continue my postgraduate studies. I received my diploma and now I want to thank everyone for these two years at the university!

MIL-OSI Russia: Joint projects of SPbPU and KRSU: contribution to the development of scientific potential

Another working visit of the Polytechnic University delegation to the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University (KRSU) took place. This time, the participants discussed joint events aimed at developing the scientific potential of KRSU. The delegation of SPbPU included the head of the Project Office “Slavic Universities” Nikita Golovin, associate professor of the Higher Engineering Physics School of the Institute of Economics and Technology Viktor Malyugin, representatives of the Higher School of Hydraulic Engineering and Power Engineering of the Institute of Scientific Research – Professor Natalia Politaeva and Associate Professor Alexander Chusov, as well as the head of the Quality Control Department Maxim Dyuldin.

The program of the visit focused on two main areas: the development of a comprehensive plan for the development of the High-Mountain Observatory of Atmospheric Physics of KRSU (VGOFAP) and the joint implementation of applied projects in the interests of KRSU’s industrial partner, Alliance Altyn LLC.

The high-mountain observatory is located in the north-east of Kyrgyzstan and is a unique scientific laboratory conducting scientific research in the field of atmospheric physics, ecology, climate change, interaction of geospheres, geodynamics and seismology. To get acquainted with the scientific equipment and areas of research, the Polytechnic delegation visited the observatory and assessed the capabilities of the infrastructure.

The Polytechnics also held a field meeting with the Vice-Rector for International, Scientific and Innovative Activities of KRSU and the Director of the Observatory Leonid Sverdlik, where they discussed the observatory’s development directions and possible applied projects. Dean German Lotsev, Deputy Dean for Research Natalia Ershova and Director of the Scientific and Technical Center Dmitry Glazunov participated in the meeting on behalf of KRSU. The Polytechnic representatives proposed solutions to problems aimed at maintaining a safe environmental situation in the Issyk-Kul Lake area and in Bishkek.

In particular, they discussed a project to measure the parameters of dust aerosol flows (concentration, quantitative and granulometric composition of dust particles, direction and speed of dust flow transfer) based on the observatory, as well as dustiness within Bishkek (comparative diagnostics method). To do this, it is necessary to modernize the infrastructure and place additional equipment on the territory of KRSU in Bishkek. It is possible to use the existing mobile environmental laboratory of KRSU. The project will result in recommendations for improving the environmental situation. It is planned to involve specialists from the Civil Engineering Institute and the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications in the work.

The Polytechnic delegation visited the scientific station of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Bishkek, which conducts research into modern geodynamic processes as a basis for earthquake forecasting, seismological research based on the digital telemetry seismological network in the territory of the Bishkek forecasting polygon and a number of other works related to seismic processes in the region. For KRSU, the scientific center is a partner for student practices and internships, as well as in conducting scientific work, including jointly with the High-Mountain Observatory of Atmospheric Physics of KRSU.

The station’s director, Anatoly Rybin, introduced the polytechnicians to the laboratories, main areas of work and results. SPbPU professor Viktor Malyugin shared with his Kyrgyz colleagues proposals for the implementation of a joint (with KRSU and the RAS) applied project to develop fiber-optic sensors for measuring seismic activity and predicting catastrophic situations. Its goal is to measure displacements and stress distribution in the Issyk-Ata fault area (Bishkek is located in a seismically dangerous region, and most of the city is in the 8-9-point zone). In the future, it will be possible to use the measurement results to predict seismic activity in the region. It is planned to involve specialists from the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications and the Institute of Power Engineering.

The final stage of the visit was an extended meeting of representatives of the two universities. The parties confirmed their interest in developing the infrastructure of the KRSU VGOFAP and implementing scientific and educational projects on its basis. The participants also discussed cooperation between the research groups of the universities and interaction with industrial partners. KABUL, July 9 (Xinhua) — More than 2,600 Afghan refugee families returned to their homeland on Tuesday, the state-run Bakhtar News Agency reported on Wednesday.

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) — A youth exchange event titled “Future of the Silk Road” kicked off in the Chinese capital recently, leading news platform chinanewes.com.cn reported Tuesday.

It is reportedly organized by the Soong Ching Ling Foundation of China. BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) — China has now formed the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system, Zhou Haibing, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, said Wednesday.

MIL-OSI Security: NATO Committee on Reserves Summer Plenary Meeting

From 24 to 26 June, the NATO Committee on Reserves (NCR) convened its Summer Plenary Meeting in Kirkenes, Norway, at the invitation of the Norwegian military authorities.

Highlights included a detailed presentation on Norway’s model for border protection, which features close cooperation between national entities such as the Border Commissioner, the Police, and the Armed Forces. Participants also visited the Parsvik Border Station, where they observed highly skilled and motivated young soldiers guarding the Norwegian-Russian border.

One of the NCR’s key objectives is the sharing of best practices. Norway, Finland and Sweden presented their national approaches to Total Defence. They outlined how they involve the whole of society in conscription, mobilization, recruitment, education and training, with a strong focus on integrating Reserves into regular Armed Forces structures.

The meeting also provided a timely opportunity to explore the growing strategic importance of NATO’s Nordic Region and the High North. Delegates left Kirkenes with valuable insights and practical knowledge to help further develop national Reserve capabilities. The Committee will reconvene for its Winter Plenary Meeting in Norfolk, USA, from 26 to 29 January 2026.

The NCR serves as the Military Committee’s standing advisory body on Reserve matters. It is composed of national representatives along with liaison officers from the International Military Staff (IMS), Allied Command Operations (ACO), and Allied Command Transformation (ACT).

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) — A total of 29.596 million pieces of cross-border e-commerce mail were exported through Heihe Port in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province in the first half of 2025, up 4,824.3 percent year on year, the Heihe Daily reported.

During the reporting period, the total weight of these parcels was 4,302 tons, and their value was 2.38 billion yuan (approximately 332.68 million US dollars), an increase of 482 percent and 1,552.8 percent year-on-year, respectively. Notably, all of these figures reached record highs.

According to Heihe Customs, the maximum daily number of processed cross-border e-commerce parcels at the border crossing reached 829,000 units.

The cities of Heihe and Blagoveshchensk are separated by the border river Heilongjiang /Amur/. Due to the geographical advantage and the efficient operation of local customs, it takes only 7-8 days to export postal items through the Heihe automobile checkpoint and undergo customs clearance, which ensures the timeliness of land transportation of goods sold within the framework of cross-border e-commerce.
