  • MIL-OSI USA: Risch, Crapo, Blackburn Introduce Bills to Protect Women in Sports

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Idaho James E Risch
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) introduced several pieces of legislation to stand up for women and girls in sports.
This effort includes a bill to assess and prevent violence against women in athletics, a resolution calling on the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to revoke its transgender student-athlete eligibility policy, and a resolution declaring October 10 as ‘American Girls in Sports Day.’
“Life isn’t fair, but sports should be. Allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports undermines the years of hard work and dedication of our female athletes,” said Risch. “I’m proud to introduce legislation to ensure a safe and even playing field for women and girls in sports.”
“Our female athletes have invested immense time and effort to excel in sports,”said Crapo. “Allowing biological males to compete in women’s categories undermines both safety and fairness for female athletes. I will continue to do all I can to counter attempts to undermine the integrity of women’s sports.”
To protect Title IX and women’s sports, Risch, Crapo, and Blackburn introduced:
The Fair Play for Girls Act to require the U.S. Attorney General to submit an analysis of violence against women in athletics to Congress as well as policy recommendations to support these young women.
A Resolution Calling on the NCAA to Protect Women in Sports: This resolution calls on the NCAA to revoke its transgender student-athlete eligibility policy; urges the NCAA to require its member conferences to conform to this biological sex-based policy across all sports and all divisions; and calls on all sports-governing bodies in the U.S. to protect the category of women’s sport for biological women and girls.
‘American Girls in Sports Day’ Resolution: This resolution would recognize October 10 as ‘American Girls in Sports Day’ to celebrate the accomplishments of female athletes.

  • MIL-OSI: Amid Trump Funding Freeze, Crowded Raises $7.5M to Improve Nonprofit Efficiency

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

MIAMI, Jan. 30, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — With nonprofits facing new financial uncertainty in the wake of President Trump’s federal funding freeze, Crowded, the mission-driven fintech platform simplifying financial management for nonprofit organizations, today announced it has raised $7.5 million in its Series A funding round, bringing its total funding to $13.5 million to date.

President Trump’s executive order to halt certain federal grants and funding has put thousands of nonprofit programs at risk, leaving organizations scrambling for alternative financial solutions. The uncertainty has heightened the need for transparency, efficiency, and real-time access to financial resources—challenges that Crowded directly addresses through its AI-driven financial management tools.

The round was led by Flashpoint a $500m transatlantic VC that counts Guesty, Chili Piper and Mesh Payments among their portfolio companies with participation from the Florida Opportunity Fund, Wilson’s Bird Capital led by Efi Shema, as well as follow-on investments from existing investors Sarona Ventures and The Garage.

Crowded is trusted by over 35 institutional customers, including renowned organizations such as Harvard Athletics, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and leading councils of Girl Scouts of the USA. Harvard Athletics is utilizing Crowded’s platform for select teams to manage per diems for student-athletes. These student-athletes can now spend their per diems with digital debit cards and make instant, fee-free transfers with their peers.

By digitizing financial management and eliminating manual processes, Crowded enables nonprofits to redirect their focus from administrative tasks to community-focused work. Crowded’s robust platform provides nonprofits with tailored multi-chapter banking, payment processing, expense management, and AI-powered tax filing services, empowering organizations with tools for financial oversight and compliance.

“In the wake of President Trump’s executive order & funding freeze, the spotlight on nonprofit financial management and accountability has never been brighter,” said Daniel Grunstein, Co-Founder and CEO of Crowded. “Nonprofits handle $3.9 trillion in payments annually and make up 14% of US GDP, yet outdated systems and fragmented processes hold back their efficiency and impact. This funding allows us to expand our nonprofit financial management platform with payment processing, compliance, and AI-powered taxation tools—giving nonprofits the modern infrastructure they need to operate as seamlessly as the world’s top enterprises. By solving these challenges, we’re enabling organizations to focus less on administration and more on their mission to drive change.”The lead investor, Flashpoint, emphasized the potential for Crowded’s mission-driven approach. “With the recent funding freeze creating uncertainty for nonprofits, solutions like Crowded are more critical than ever,” said Noam Wolf at Flashpoint. “Crowded is dedicated to helping nonprofits focus on their mission rather than their balance sheets, and this moment highlights the urgent need for financial transparency and resilience. We are proud to support their growth and look forward to seeing them empower more organizations to do good.”

Cegedim’s consolidated fourth quarter 2024 revenues rose to €178.7 million, up 7.2% as reported and 5.9% like for like(2) compared with the same period in 2023. All operating divisions contributed to like for like growth in the fourth quarter.

Over the full year, revenues rose 6.3% as reported and 4.7% like for like compared with 2023. Marketing, health insurance, HR, and cloud businesses delivered the most solid growth over the full year. As expected, the Software & Services division felt the impact of comparisons with Ségur public health investment spending in 2023 and a slowdown in international sales because the Group decided to refocus its UK doctor software activities on Scotland, and then later decided to voluntarily place that business under administration.

    Software & Services 80.1 75.7 +5.8% +2.8% 307.8 302.3 +1.8% (1.2)%

Revenues at Cegedim Santé grew 17.2% as reported in the fourth quarter and 1.8% like for like. Reported growth over the full year came to 4.8%, but like-for-like revenues fell 7.1% due to the absence of Ségur public health investments, which generated revenue of €4.7 million in 2023. Reported growth includes Visiodent from March 1, 2024. The new subsidiary has already started marketing Group products like the Maiia appointment scheduling app and the Claude Bernard database to its clients, but those sales are not reflected in like-for-like growth.

Others French subsidiaries saw reported revenue growth of 5.1% in the fourth quarter and 2% over the full year (1.9% LFL; Phealing acquired in Q4 2023). Over both the fourth quarter and the full year, the division was propelled by growth at the insurance businesses, thanks to robust project-based sales, and by HR, which is still getting a boost from its client diversification strategy. On the other hand, sales to pharmacies were down substantially—as they were at some of the competitors. This was partly because equipment sales slowed after many pharmacies updated their equipment in 2023. In addition, the pharmacy software business took in more than €2 million in Ségur public health investment revenues in 2023, creating a tough comparison.

Internationally, revenues from software sales to UK doctors declined, as expected, following the Group’s decision early in the year to refocus the activity on Scotland. Unfortunately, the market proved too sluggish for this plan to succeed. On December 10, the Group decided to deconsolidate this subsidiary after announcing it would be voluntarily placed under administration. That move aggravated the drop in reported revenues in the fourth quarter, which came to 8.2%.

Fourth-quarter growth in e-business, e-invoicing, and digitized data exchanges was 7.1%. The boost came from a rebound in Invoicing & Purchasing in France and a continued surge at the Healthcare Flow segment, which started early in the year, owing to dynamic new offerings for hospitals that are designed to make their drug purchasing secure. Growth over the full year was a solid 5.6%.

The digital data flow business dealing with reimbursement of healthcare payments in France (Third-party payer) experienced 18.7% growth in Q4. It was boosted by strong growth in demand for its fraud and long-term illness detection offerings. Over the full year, this trend more than offset the transfer of revenue attributable to the Allianz contract—now attributed to the BPO business—and allowed the unit to post growth of 9.9%.

    Highlights

Apart from the items cited below, to the best of the company’s knowledge, there were no events or changes during Q4 2024 that would materially alter the Group’s financial situation.

On December 10, 2024, Cegedim announced that it had voluntarily placed its UK subsidiary—INPS, which sells software for doctors—under administration.

Significant transactions and events post December 31, 2024
To the best of the company’s knowledge, there were no post-closing events or changes after December 31, 2024, that would materially alter the Group’s financial situation.

    Outlook

Like-for-like revenue growth(1) in 2024 was just below the bottom of the announced 5% to 8% range compared with 2023. Had the Group not refocused INPS on Scotland and then closed it later in the year, it would have met the 5% target. This performance is unlikely to jeopardize the outlook for recurring operating income, which is expected to continue improving.
That said, the deconsolidation of INPS is likely to result in significant non-cash adjustments.
These statements are not forecasts and are based on financial information that has not yet been audited.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Dmitry Chernyshenko: In the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland, the International Sports Games of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky will be held in St. Petersburg

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Government of the Russian Federation – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The first meeting of the organizing committee for the preparation and holding of the 2025 Saint Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky International Sports Games was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

“Last year, almost 2,000 people from 68 regions took part in the Games in 6 sports. The team from St. Petersburg became the winner and holder of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Challenge Cup. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin supported the initiative of Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Kirill to give the competitions international status from 2025. The invitation campaign for foreign teams will start in March of this year. This time, the competitions will be held in St. Petersburg in the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland and on the days of remembrance of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky, which gives them special meaning,” Dmitry Chernyshenko emphasized.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, strengthening the moral and ethical foundations of modern sports is becoming especially relevant today. The principles of raising a harmoniously developed person form the basis of sports, the state’s youth policy, and the patriotic education of the younger generation. Promoting the cultural and historical heritage and our traditional values will strengthen Russia’s sovereignty, ensure the unity of our country, and develop human potential. All of this is among the priorities of the organizing committee.

“The International Sports Games of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky are included in the unified calendar plan of the Ministry of Sports of Russia for 2025 and, I am convinced, will not only help attract young people to sports, but also strengthen spiritual and moral values. In addition, in 2025, the Games will be included in the list of significant international events and will unite athletes from Russia and friendly countries,” said Minister of Sports Mikhail Degtyarev.

Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Boris Piotrovsky thanked for choosing St. Petersburg as the venue for the Games, noting the city’s extensive experience in organizing international events. He said that the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games will take place in the Yubileiny sports complex, among the venues are ready-made competition facilities.

Metropolitan Mitrofan of Murmansk and Monchegorsk, Chairman of the Patriarchal Commission on Physical Culture and Sports, also spoke about the progress of preparations and outlined recommendations for organizing the work and attracting participants from regions of Russia and other countries.

First Deputy Chairperson of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Svetlana Zhurova emphasized the importance of giving competitions international status and, using her personal example, spoke about the role of athletes’ participation in such events for their professional development.

During the meeting, Dmitry Chernyshenko gave a number of instructions concerning organizational, information support and security.

The meeting of the organizing committee was also attended by Ambassador-at-Large, Special Representative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for International Sports Cooperation Mikhail Khorev, representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Health, Rospotrebnadzor, the FSB, Rosmolodezh, and Rossotrudnichestvo.

The first All-Russian Sports Games of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky took place in 2023 in Kemerovo, the second in 2024 in Nizhny Novgorod.

  • MIL-OSI Global: From YMCA to MAGA: why Trump plays Village People at his rallies

Source: The Conversation – UK – By William Rees, University of Exeter

It was a bizarre sight watching a huge gay 1970s disco hit being performed at Donald Trump’s 2025 pre-inauguration rally. Many prominent artists from Beyoncé to Bruce Springsteen prohibit Trump from using their music. So why do Village People – a band synonymous with the 1970s gay liberation movement – allow their music to be associated with a political movement that has fixed and repressive ideas about sexual identity and morality?

Village People’s recent incarnation has had a complicated relationship with the “make America great again” movement (Maga). In 2020, their song YMCA began featuring at Maga anti-lockdown rallies and soon became a prominent song in Trump’s re-election campaign.

At the time, the band asked Trump not to use its music and later supported Kamala Harris for the presidency in 2024. Since then Village People have dramatically changed tack.

To be clear, of the group that performed at Trump’s pre-inauguration rally, only one of the original Village People remains. The band, put together by the gay producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo in 1978, was named after New York’s Greenwich Village gay scene.

Looking for something good? Cut through the noise with a carefully curated selection of the latest releases, live events and exhibitions, straight to your inbox every fortnight, on Fridays. Sign up here.

In the 1970s, the group was mostly gay-fronted except the first recruit, lead singer and co-songwriter Victor Willis (sometimes the policeman, sometimes the admiral figure). Willis took control of the name and the hits in 2017 after an out-of-court settlement with co-owner Henri Belolo.

Willis is now the only member of the original line up still performing under the official band name. Perhaps to ensure mainstream popularity, he has tried to move Village People away from its gay associations – the biography on the band’s website makes no mention of the act’s significance to queer audiences. He recently wrote on Facebook that he will sue every news organisation that suggests “YMCA is somehow a gay anthem”.

Victor Willis, the last remaining original member of Village People in a 1978 video for Just A Gigolo.

But it’s difficult to untangle Village People from queer history as it was the trendsetting gay community of underground disco culture that made them famous. Record companies selected the songs and artists to promote based on how DJs reported their popularity in the hottest clubs. Many of these clubs were gay dominated, and disco itself was tied up with the growing confidence of the gay liberation movement in America and the era of sexual liberalisation that followed the 1960s.

Jacques Morali put together Village People knowing the band could offer influential gay clubbers something they had always been denied: cultural representation, and with it, acknowledgement of their existence.

It worked. One self-proclaimed “disco doll” writing to LGBTQ+ newspaper The Advocate in 1978 recalled first hearing Village People: “The music was very hot … and the words were about us, about our scene. I couldn’t believe it.”

Village People’s innuendos and knowing references to gay culture often went over the heads of many straight listeners. Songs like Macho Man and the group’s hypermasculine image epitomised the “clone” movement in 1970s gay culture.

Queer men, long derided for being effeminate, would bulk up at the gym and dress in leathers like bikers, effectively becoming more of an embodiment of masculinity than straight men. Go West was a reference to San Francisco’s more liberal environment for gay men. The YMCA was a place to “hang out with all the boys”.

But skyrocketing into the mainstream made Village People an awkward fit for gay disco culture. This vibrant community wanted their own scene that was not part of the mainstream. They felt betrayed by a band publicly denying their gayness as they juggled the hardcore homosexual audience that had made them famous alongside a family-friendly audience.

The backlash was fierce. A 1978 letter to gay lib magazine The Body Politic declared: “The commercial exploiters are disguising it to gain the commercially lucrative straight audience”, describing Village People as “traitors of the worst kind”.

But even if they became momentarily unpopular in the hottest gay clubs, for many LGBTQ+ people, Village People’s hits have endured as anthems played at queer nights and Pride events. In their sound, appearance and sheer 1970-ness, they are undeniably camp icons.

Which of course leads many to question why people attending Trump’s rallies – hardly famous for their inclusivity – would embrace their music. One explanation is that Maga audiences simply do not care about past gay associations as the music is simple, catchy and positive.

Another is that just like the 1970s, the queer messaging of Village People’s music still goes over the heads of straight Maga audiences. Perhaps despite its past gay associations, they are consciously trying to culturally repurpose disco for their own movement. Or they’re trying to be ironic.

Most likely, though, the music might have a particular meaning to LGBTQ+ audiences, it has other meanings depending on the context in which it is played. To many, Village People are the epitome of a novelty, apolitical pop group. Their hits are associated with weddings, children’s parties and good-time disco. The prosaic truth may be that Trump fans just enjoy a really catchy tune.

But for Trump’s team, the use of these songs is politically calculated toward their core supporters who have changed the lyrics of YMCA to “MAGA”. And don’t forget Village People were joined at the pre-inauguration rally by WWE wrestling’s Hulk Hogan. Both are nostalgic late 20th-century acts that revel in blatant performances of muscled masculinity.

They seem to be the embodiment of that imagined past of American virility that Trump vaguely refers to when he promises to make the nation “great again”. It’s not difficult to work out what Trump’s message is, especially when he dances along to Macho Man at rallies.

Both these acts are carnivalesque, like Trump himself. They indicate an era of politics as spectacle, but beneath the surface messages, we must carefully pay attention to what is actually being said and done.

William Rees does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

Over ten subjects during the five sessions spread over two days, were extensively discussed and inputs gathered, with the objective to design targeted action items. Three Committees comprising five States each were formed. Building on the discussions during the workshop, these Committees will hold consultations and develop a sustainable model for comprehensive social security coverage for workers, to be presented in March 2025.

Taking note of the deliberations and suggestions made during the two-day workshop, the Union Minister during his address laid out a comprehensive action plan for all stakeholders. He urged States to assess the feasibility of adopting best practices showcased by different States/UTs during the last two days. He emphasized that the Ministry is committed and would continue to work closely with State Governments to design various reforms and initiatives to ensure welfare of organized and unorganized workers. Holistic and sustainable welfare programmes providing pension, healthcare, life and accident insurance, etc. are being discussed.

Social security for unorganized sector workers, such as the ones in Building and Construction work, in the gig & platform economy, and other sectors was extensively discussed. The Union Minister emphasized developing sustainable social security models for these workers. Further, the welfare of contract labour and the transformation of the role of the inspector to inspector-cum-facilitator were the other main agenda items for day two.

States showcased the progress made in utilizing BOCW cess funds in giving social security coverage, besides developing education and skill development institutions for children of Building and Construction Workers. Innovative ways of utilizing these resources for providing various social welfare initiatives like pension were widely deliberated.

Progress made in onboarding unorganized workers onto the eShram portal showcased the Government’s efforts towards strengthening the last-mile delivery of benefits to these workers. So far over 30 crore unorganized workers are registered on the eShram portal. The Ministry is also working on designing a dedicated Social Security and Welfare Scheme for Gig & Platform workers. Modalities of funding, data collection, and administration of the Scheme were discussed and States were urged to prioritize the sharing of data of unorganized workers, with a focus on gig & platform workers and support in their registration on eShram on mission mode. Integration of eShram and Government portals like NCS, and SIDH are contributing to promoting employment generation, employability, skill development, etc.

Shift from inspector to inspector-cum-facilitator model was another major reform discussed with State/UT administrators. The overall objective of this reform is to reduce the compliance burden and promote ease of doing business, along with ensuring decent working conditions, equal opportunities at work and improved employee-employer relationships.

Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, Hon’ble Minister of State for Ministry of Labour and Employment during her closing remarks, underscored the important contribution made by India’s workforce in achieving the goal of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047. Maximizing social security coverage and ensuring labour welfare of both organized and unorganized workers was the main goal of all the consultations held over last year and this two-day Chintin Shivir. She reiterated the whole-of-Government approach needed to take all the initiatives to a logical conclusion in a time-bound manner.

Engaged in the spirit of cooperative federalism, the two-day meetings displayed the Government’s commitment towards promoting labour welfare and facilitating ease of doing business and promoting industrial growth across States/UTs.

2024/25 PDC World Darts Championship generates estimated $4.57 million in sponsorship revenue, reveals GlobalData

    Posted in Sport

With seven brands sponsoring the 2024/25 Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Darts Championship, the competition’s largest sponsorship deal in terms of annual value was with Paddy Power. The title sponsorship agreement is worth an estimated $1.5 million a year for a period of three years. Overall, the championship is estimated to have generated $4.57 million in sponsorship revenue, reveals GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Post Event Analysis – World Darts Championship 2024/25”, reveals that the event is involved in a media agreement with the pay-TV broadcaster Sky, worth in total an estimated $93.47 million to air the championship on its platform across the UK and Ireland up until January 2026.

Tom Subak-Sharpe, Sport Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The PDC in 2024 was successful in agreeing to four new commercial deals with brands willing to partner with this year’s world championship. With the help of Luke Littler, darts is going from strength to strength, with more brands becoming intrigued into becoming associated with some of the sport’s biggest events, including its most prestigious competition, the World Darts Championship.”

Sky’s viewership for this year’s World Darts Championship final averaged 2.7 million, with a peak audience reaching 3.1 million. Though lower than last year, these are very encouraging figures for the PDC, still higher than any other non-football audience in the last 12 months.

Subak-Sharpe continues: “The fundamental reason for such strong viewership numbers is the pull that teenager Luke Littler has for the UK public. Littler remains one of the sought after sports stars in the UK, with the public eager to witness his journey to dominate the sport.”

Subak-Sharpe concludes: “The biggest event in darts continues to establish a very strong commercial footprint, as new brands have been added to the portfolio of the event. With darts growing in popularity across many countries, viewership of the World Darts Championship should remain positive for many years to come.”

Headline: Sydney to host Rugby World Cup final and semi-finals

    Published: 30 January 2025

Released by: The Premier, Minister for Jobs, Minister for Sport, Minister for Tourism

NSW is the big winner from the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 host city announcement, with our state set to host more games than any other, including both semi-finals and the final.

The third largest sporting event in the world, the Rugby World Cup has delivered decades of drama including Wallabies glory, extra-time heartbreak and Nelson Mandela hoisting the trophy alongside the Springboks.

All of that history, along with 24 national teams, an estimated 215,000 visitors, and hundreds of millions of global TV viewers, will culminate in NSW for six weeks in October and November in 2027.

The host city agreement has resulted in 17 of a total 52 games being played in NSW, with Newcastle hosting four pool matches and Sydney hosting 13 fixtures, including five pool matches, two Round of 16 matches, two quarter-finals, both semi-finals, the bronze final and the final set to take place at Stadium Australia on November 13.

Destination NSW estimates the tournament will inject more than $610 million into the state’s visitor economy and be Sydney’s biggest sport event in over 20 years.

In addition to the direct social and economic benefits, the right to host the finals will mean Sydney is centre stage for the global television audience, providing immeasurable marketing impact for the NSW visitor economy.

The announcement confirms NSW as a premier destination for world class sporting events including the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, Sail GP and the Sydney Marathon which recently gained world marathon major status.

Supporting major events is a key part of the Minns Labor Government’s strategy to grow the visitor economy. In October the government committed to a new ambitious growth target of $91 billion of visitor expenditure by 2035, a 40% increase on the previous 2030 goal.

Sydney has a proud Rugby World Cup history, having hosted six games during the inaugural tournament in 1987 and 16 games – including the final – when Australia last hosted in 2003. The NSW Government is also proud to support this year’s British and Irish Lions Tour while Australia will also host the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2029.

In the lead up to the event Chair of Destination NSW Sally Loane will lead a committee tasked with maximising the tourism opportunities of hosting the Men’s Rugby World Cup.

    NSW Premier Chris Minns said:

“It’s great to see NSW come out on top – securing hosting rights to the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027.

“Staging the finals and having more matches than any other state, demonstrates just how attractive NSW is as a destination for global sporting events.

“To all those keen rugby fans across the globe – it’s time to lock in your travel plans. Not only will you get to watch some fantastic sport, but you will also get to tour the best state in the world, home to extraordinary national parks and unparalleled Harbour views.”

Minister for Jobs and Tourism John Graham said:

“With more games than any other state, NSW will be the home of the tournament which means hundreds of thousands of fans will travel here and experience what our incredible state has to offer.”

“The stadiums and the streets of Sydney and Newcastle will be absolutely buzzing during the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2027.

“Hosting world class events is a key part of our strategy to significantly grow the NSW visitor economy over the next ten years.”

“My message to rugby fans around the world is – come for the rucks and mauls, stay for the food, the wine, the beaches and cultural experiences!”

Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said:

“Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 will be a festival of rugby union like no other that will inspire the next generation of players.

“The choice of Sydney to host the tournament’s final match – along with both semi-finals and the bronze final – reflects the city’s position as world class sporting events capital, and the NSW Government is excited to welcome the world’s best rugby teams – and their fans – in 2027.

“For 6 weeks, we are going to be centre stage for the sporting world.

World Rugby Chair, Brett Robinson said:

“We are delighted to reach another significant milestone on our journey to Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027. The selection of these incredible host cities reflects our commitment to bring Rugby World Cup to Australians’ backyard and maximise the tournament’s positive impact and sporting legacy in all host communities.

“Australia’s iconic cities and rich culture will create an extraordinary atmosphere for fans and players alike, uniting an entire nation for six unforgettable weeks. We look forward to working with host cities to make this tournament one for the ages.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: ‘Digital doppelgangers’ are helping scientists tackle everyday problems – and showing what makes us human

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Alicia (Lucy) Cameron, Principal Research Consultant & Team Leader, Data61, CSIRO

    cybermagician/Shutterstock

As rising seas lap at its shore, Tuvalu faces an existential threat. In an effort to preserve the tiny island nation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, its government has been building a “digital twin” of the entire country.

Digital twins are exactly what they sound like – a virtual double or replica of a physical, real-world entity. Scientists have been creating digital twins of everything from molecules, to infrastructure, and even entire planets.

It’s also now possible to construct a digital twin of an individual person. In other words, a “digital doppelganger”.

A doppelganger is someone who looks spookily like you but isn’t. The word originated in German, and literally means a “double walker”. A number of industries are now using digital doppelgangers for a range of reasons. These include enhancing athletic performance, offering more personalised healthcare and improving workplace safety.

But although there are benefits to this technology, there are significant risks associated with its development. Having digital doppelgangers also forces us to reflect on which of our human attributes can’t be digitally replicated.

    Modelling complex systems

The development of digital twins has been enabled by advances in environmental sensors, camera vision, augmented reality and virtual reality, as well as machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).

A digital twin allows us to build and test things in cyberspace – cheaply and without risk – before deploying in the real world.

For example, we can build and stress-test infrastructure such as bridges or water supply pipes under a variety of conditions. Once built, we can use digital models to maintain the infrastructure proactively and prevent disastrous and costly structural breakdowns. This technology is a game-changer for planning and engineering, not only saving billions of dollars, but also supporting sustainability efforts.

Of course, replicating individual humans requires much more complex modelling than when building digital twins of bridges or buildings.

For a start, humans don’t live in a structured world, but rather inhabit complex social and physical environments. We are variable, moody and motivated by any number of factors, from hunger to tiredness, love to anger. We can change our past patterns with conscious thought, as well as act spontaneously and with creativity, challenging the status quo if needed.

Because of this, creating perfect digital twins of humans is incredibly challenging – if not impossible. Nevertheless, digital doppelgangers are still useful for a number of purposes.

    The digital patient

Clinicians increasingly use scans to create virtual models of the human body, with which to plan operations or create artificial body parts.

By adding extra biometric information (for example, blood chemistry, biomechanics and physiological responses), digital models can also mirror real-world bodies, live and in real time.

Creating digital patients can optimise treatment responses in a move away from one-size-treats-all healthcare. This means drugs, dosages and rehabilitation plans can be personalised, as well as being thoroughly tested before being applied to real people.

Digital patients can also increase the accessibility of medical expertise to people living in remote locations. And what’s more, using multiple digital humans means some clinical trials can now be performed virtually.

Scaled up further, this technology allows for societal-level simulations with which to better manage public health events, such as air pollution, pandemics or tsunamis.

    The digital athlete

Imagine being able to train against a digital replica of an upcoming opponent.

Sports scientists are increasingly working with digital athletes to trial and optimise strength and conditioning regimes, as well as test competitive play. This helps to increase the chances of winning as well as prevent injuries.

Researchers at Griffith University have been pioneers in this space, creating models of real athletes. They have also trialled wearable sensors in patches or smart clothing that can measure a range of biomarkers: blood pressure and chemistry, temperature, and sweat composition.

CSIRO and the Australian Sports Commission have also used digital humans to improve the performance of divers, swimmers and rowers.

    The digital worker

As well as building virtual replicas of sports people, scientists at CSIRO have also being building virtual simulations of employees in various workplaces, including offices and construction sites.

This is helping them analyse movements, workflows and productivity – with the broader aim of preventing workplace injuries. For example, scientists can use a model of a digital worker to assess how heavy items are lifted in order to better understand how this puts strain on different parts of the body.

With 6.1 million Australians impacted by musculoskeletal conditions, preventing workplace injuries can not only improve lives, but save the economy billions of dollars.

Digital dopplegangers can help prevent workplace injuries.
    Rose Marinelli/Shutterstock

    Responsible development of digital doppelgangers

Building a digital doppelgangers requires a lot of very personal data. This can include scans, voice and video recordings, or performance and health data.

Personal data can also be harvested from an array of other sources. These include as cars, mobile phones, and internet-connected smart devices.

The creation of data-hungry digital replicas is forcing us to redefine legal rights. Think copyright, deepfakes and identity theft or online scams.

The power of this technology is inspiring. But ensuring a future in which we live happily alongside our digital doppelgangers will require governments, technology developers and end-users to think hard about issues of consent, ethical data management and the potential for misuse of this technology.

The authors do not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and have disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

In total, more than 240 Sony Cameras will be in and around the Caesars Superdome covering your favorite plays, replays, interviews, and celebrations – enhancing the fan engagement experience for the crowd on-site as well as the billions around the world that will watch the game and consume Super Bowl content after it is over. These cameras range from Sony’s professional broadcast models used by FOX Sports, the official broadcaster, to the various Alpha interchangeable lens cameras and E-mount lenses including G Master that The Associated Press and other sideline photographers will be using to create timeless Super Bowl imagery.

“The Super Bowl is not just the biggest game of the year, it is also the biggest production,” says Michael Davies, FOX Sports EVP Field Operations. “Our job is to tell the story of the game, capturing the energy within the stadium and keeping billions of viewers engaged, and Sony is a key tool in reaching that goal.”

Sony’s professional broadcast cameras have covered football’s biggest game for over a decade. This year FOX Sports, together with the production company Game Creek Video will deploy more than 100 cameras on-site for pre-game, in-game and post-game action as well as additional studio shows. FOX will also have Sony BVM reference level monitors on-site used for color gradation to bring the most accurate imagery to fans around the world.

Sony’s cameras will be positioned in each end zone, along both sidelines and in multiple positions throughout the stadium including the “SkyCam” over the field. There will be 14 Sony cameras specifically handling content for streaming.

At Super Bowl LIX, in addition to all the broadcast and production cameras, FOX Sports will use Sony’s HawkREPLAY systems, a remote production and instant replay broadcast solution, to support the overall broadcast experience, and additional Hawk-Eye technology will also be supporting in-game officiating and replay services, as well as the overall production.

On the photography side, Sony has been the exclusive imaging products and support provider for The Associated Press – the definitive source for NFL imagery – since 2020. In total, AP will have 14 photographers and 9 editors on-site at the Super Bowl using Sony equipment to capture and share incredible imagery of the league’s most defining moments. NFL’s in-house photography team “NFL Focus” will also be using a variety of Sony Alpha cameras and lenses to cover the game as well. Sony’s Pro Support team will offer a pro photographer depot on-site to help service and support the professionals working the game, including offering loans of the brand-new flagship Alpha 1 II camera.

Both the Associated Press and the NFL in-house photography are also planning to utilize Sony’s PDT-FP1 transmitter device on-site to deliver photos + videos directly from camera to editors in real-time, streamlining their workflow and resulting in the fastest possible distribution to the public.

Each year the size and scope of the Super Bowl Halftime Show gets larger, including its production elements. For the fifth year in a row, the Funicular Goats will technically produce the Halftime Show and for the fourth straight year, the Goats are choosing the Sony VENICE 2 as their main camera alongside the Sony VENICE Extension System and the Sony BURANO for a total of 14 cameras.

“The Super Bowl Halftime Show is a challenge unlike any other project we’ve been a part of,” explains James Coker, Head of Engineering and Technical Management at Funicular Goats. “There are less than five minutes to set up and deliver a cinematic concert to millions of people, and the Sony Cinema Line cameras provide the perfect combination of full-frame sensor with broadcast compatibility to work seamlessly within the show’s structure and achieve this challenge.”

Below is a cumulative, high-level outline of all of the Sony cameras and related technologies that that are being used to cover Super Bowl LIX.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Statement from the Hon. Stephen Jones MP, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services, and Member for Whitlam

    Source: Australian Treasurer

After 15 years and 5 elections, I am announcing that I won’t be standing for re‑election as the member for Whitlam.

I want to express my immense gratitude to my community for the faith and trust they have placed in me to be their representative since 2010.

I want to thank the members of the Australian Labor Party, whose values I hold dear and have always attempted to advance in my role as a Member of Parliament, Shadow Minister and Minister.

I want to thank the Prime Minister for his friendship and support over many decades and for the trust he has placed in me to be the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services in his government.

To my family and friends, whose love and support has enabled me to represent our great community with the dedication it deserves, I thank you wholeheartedly.

And to all the staff that have worked with and supported me over the last 15 years, there is a long list of accomplishments we have achieved both for the electorate of Whitlam and in my role as Minister, and I couldn’t have done it without you.

I have had the privilege to see the Illawarra and the Southern Highlands go from strength to strength. Growing up and living most of my life in this beautiful place I have seen many changes. We still mine coal and produce steel – but we are so much more. Our world class university educates and gives opportunity to thousands of locals every year. New suburbs have emerged from farmland, but we have not lost our ability to produce great athletes, artists, minds, and citizens.

Together over 15 years, we have achieved many things. We have connected every home and business to the NBN. We have established a National Disability Insurance Scheme. We are building new infrastructure for new suburbs, and we are restoring Medicare.

I am proud of the role I played in progressing marriage equality and gambling ad reform in my early years. I am also proud of the work we have done to secure the future of our steel industry, to rebuild TAFE and as Assistant Treasurer, fighting scams, protecting workers superannuation, making financial advice more accessible and affordable, and strengthening consumer protections for all Australians.

This great community deserves a representative who will continue to fight for the things that matter. A well‑funded TAFE system, a future for manufacturing, cheaper childcare, restoring Medicare, affordable housing, and better infrastructure for our growing suburbs.

I know Labor will choose a candidate that will do just that.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Boozman Joins Colleagues in Effort to Protect Women’s Sports

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Arkansas – John Boozman
WASHINGTON––U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) has backed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, legislation introduced by Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL). Boozman is cosponsoring the bill along with Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and 33 of their colleagues.
The measure would ensure schools do not allow males to share private spaces with females or compete in women’s sports as a condition of federal funding. This bill pushes back against previous overreaching regulations, such as the Biden administration’s Title IX Rule, that attempted to prioritize radical gender ideology over the wellbeing of women and girls.
“Millions of young girls have benefited from the opportunity to pursue athletic achievement since the enactment of Title IX,” Boozman said. “It’s common sense to expect a safe environment and fair competition for them still today. I’m pleased to join my colleagues on this effort to uphold the integrity of women’s and girls’ sports and their right to privacy.”
Specifically, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act:
Ensures Title IX provisions treat sex as “recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
Bans recipients of federal funding from operating, sponsoring or facilitating athletic programs that permit a male to participate in a women’s sporting event.
Companion legislation has passed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 218-206, with all four members of the Arkansas Congressional Delegation voting in favor of the bill.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Graham, Cruz and Britt Introduce Bill to Restrict Birthright Citizenship

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for South Carolina Lindsey Graham
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Katie Britt (R-Alabama) today introduced a bill that would restrict one of the biggest magnets for illegal immigration into the United States. The Birthright Citizenship Act of 2025 stops the practice of granting citizenship to both the children of illegal immigrants and the children of non-immigrants in the U.S. on temporary visas, also known as birthright citizenship. Graham first introduced the legislation in September 2024.
The exploitation of birthright citizenship is a major pull factor for illegal immigration and a weakness for our national security. The United States is one of only 33 countries in the world with no restrictions on birthright citizenship.
“It is long overdue for the United States to change its policy on birthright citizenship because it is being abused in so many ways,” said Senator Graham. “One example is birth tourism, where wealthy individuals from China and other nations come to the United States simply to have a child who will be an American citizen. When you look at the magnets that draw people to America, birthright citizenship is one of the largest. I also appreciate President Trump’s executive order to address birthright citizenship. It is time for the United States to align itself with the rest of the world and restrict this practice once and for all.”
“The promise of American citizenship should not incentivize illegal migration, but that’s exactly what has happened for far too long,” said Senator Britt. “It’s time to fix this. Senator Lindsey Graham’s and my Birthright Citizenship Act would codify President Trump’s commonsense stance and end the abuse of birthright citizenship that I do not believe is consistent with the original meaning of the 14thAmendment’s Citizenship Clause. This will protect our nation’s sovereignty, disincentivize illegal migration, and ensure America’s citizenship practices are stronger and better aligned with peer countries around the globe.”
The Biden-Harris Administration’s catch-and-release policies let migrants come into the U.S. illegally and stay for years, while enjoying many of the benefits of living in America.
Illegal immigration skyrocketed during the Biden-Harris Administration.
The Center for Immigration Studies estimates that in 2023, there were 225,000 to 250,000 births to illegal immigrants, amounting to close to seven percent of births in the U.S.
Our adversaries are taking advantage of our laws.
In September 2024, two individuals from California were found guilty in a “birth tourism” scheme. Predominantly Chinese clients paid the operators of a “maternity hotel” tens of thousands of dollars to come to the U.S. to give birth. Clients were coached on how to lie during the admissions process.
A 2022 Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee report found a birthing company catering to the wives of Russian oligarchs, celebrities, athletes, and public figures.
The Birthright Citizenship Act of 2025:
Specifies who can receive citizenship by virtue of their birth in the United States, including children born to at least one parent who is either:
A citizen or national of the U.S.,
A lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or
An alien performing active service in the armed forces.
This bill only applies to children born after the date of enactment.

Discussions on Day 1 focused on Labour Reforms, ESIC Medical Facilities and Healthcare Infrastructure Reforms, Initiatives including the National Career Service (NCS) portal and the Model Career Centres (MCC)

Posted On: 29 JAN 2025 8:16PM by PIB Delhi

The two-day National level meeting with Labour Ministers and Secretaries of States & UTs, held in New Delhi, under the Chairmanship of Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, commenced today. Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, Hon’ble Minister of State for Ministry of Labour and Employment, along with Hon’ble Labour Ministers from various States/UTs, were present during the meetings. Ms Sumita Dawra, Secretary, set the context for the deliberations.

Delivering his inaugural address, Dr. Mandaviya emphasized on the need for undertaking labour reforms, which are crucial for realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. He underscored that a fine balance between workers’ welfare and industrial growth must remain at the core of all policy decisions. He urged all States and UTs to participate in knowledge-sharing on reforms undertaken by them, in the spirit of cooperative federalism, and their inputs will be transformed into a comprehensive action plan to take forward the employment and labour reform agenda in India.

Spread over two days (29th & 30th January 2025), these meetings are focusing on laying the groundwork for Labour Reforms, Social Security for Organized and Unorganized Workers including Gig and Platform Workers and expanding ESIC medical and healthcare services. There is equal focus on interventions for matching demand and supply in the labour market, promoting employment generation and employability through National Career Service (NCS) Portal and Model Career Centres (MCC), etc.

Attended by Labour Ministers and senior officials from States/UTs, these meetings provide a platform for showcasing the reforms undertaken by States in line with the labour codes and promote cross learnings and knowledge sharing.

During day one, discussions were focused on (i) Labour Reforms; (ii) ESIC medical facilities and healthcare infrastructure reforms; and (iii) Initiatives including the National Career Service (NCS) portal and the Model Career Centres (MCC).

    Labour Reforms

Several States have undertaken reforms in line with labour codes under the existing Acts. These reforms are aimed at promoting greater ease of doing business, reduction in compliance burden, decriminalisation, promoting women participation in the workforce, and other employment and labour related interventions, leading to a friendlier ecosystem of labour regulations. Such interventions promote both employment generation and labour welfare, leading us on the path of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

It was noted that over eighteen States/UTs have already implemented majority of the reforms and more than 32 States/UTs have pre-published the draft rules under the four Labour Codes, while the remaining States/UTs have made satisfactory progress, during the year. All 36 States/UTs expected to complete pre-publication of harmonized draft rules in line with the labour codes, by 31st March 2025.

ESIC Medical Facilities and Healthcare Infrastructure Reforms

Focussed discussions on (i) convergence of ESIC with PM-ABJAY; (ii) utilization of State Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) for Primary/Secondary Medical Care; (iii) formation of State ESI Society; (iv) implementation of Dhanwantari Module in ESIS hospitals/ dispensaries and (v) designating Medical Colleges and Charity Hospitals as ESIC hospitals, was also one of the key highlights of the day.

Leveraging the existing healthcare infrastructure including PM-ABJAY hospitals, PHCs / CHCs with upgradation of necessary medical facilities was emphasized to provide comprehensive benefits, especially in the underserved areas.

    Promoting Employability and Employment Generation

On day one, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports launched two significant initiatives – Occupational Shortage Index (OSI) and State and Union Territory Microsites under the e-Shram initiative. The OSI is a landmark initiative aimed at matching labour market demand and supply and enhancing employment outcomes across India. The eShram microsites would facilitate two-way integration and provide a one-stop-solution to unorganized workers for seamless access of social security and welfare, employment opportunities, skilling programmes, etc.

During the session, States’ role in promoting the usage of National Career Service (NCS) portal and Model Career Centre (MCC) facilities was presented. States were urged to complete digitization of employment portals and integration with NCS on priority so that job seekers can widely gain from the one-stop solution for career-related services and physical hubs for career counseling and employment facilitation.

Several useful insights and suggestions were shared by participants during day one. The Ministry in collaboration with States/UTs is compiling a comprehensive action plan to implement reforms in a focused manner.

The day concluded with vibrant cultural programme showcasing the rich cultural heritage of India.

Microsite Facility to Ensure Seamless Access to Welfare Programsfor Unorganized Workers

Posted On: 29 JAN 2025 7:31PM by PIB Delhi

Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, launched two significant initiatives – State and Union Territory Microsites under the e-Shram initiative and the Occupational Shortage Index (OSI), today during the Meeting with State/UT Labour Ministers & Secretaries held in New Delhi. Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, Hon’ble Minister of State for Ministry of Labour and Employment, Labour Ministers from various States/UTs, Ms Sumita Dawra, Secretary and senior officials of Ministry of Labour and Employment, were also present during the meeting.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya stated, “The multilingual eShram microsite facility is a transformative initiative aimed at ensuring that unorganised workers have seamless access to both State and Central government welfare programs. This will not only empower workers but also enhance transparency and efficiency in welfare service delivery.”

Regarding the OSI, he further added, “By leveraging real-time labour market data, we are ensuring that skill development and job matching processes are data-driven and tailored to the actual needs of industries, making our workforce future-ready.”

e-Shram Microsites are state-specific digital platforms seamlessly integrated with the national e-Shram database. Facilitating two-way integration between State portals and the eShram portals, this will facilitate simplified registration of unorganised workers.

This will provide a one-stop solution for seamless access toboth Central and State welfare programs for unorganised workers, employment opportunities, skilling programmes, etc.

For States/UTs, the microsites provide a ready-to-use digital infrastructure, reducing the need for costly and time-consuming development processes. With real-time analytic dashboards, they facilitate better policy decision-making and allow States to include tools specific to their labour market requirements.

For workers, the microsites offer a seamless registration process and access to a wide range of social security benefits. The platform ensures multilingual accessibility, enabling workers from different regions to access information and services in their preferred language. Through two-way integration with the e-Shram database, workers receive real-time updates on welfare schemes and employment opportunities.

The second major initiative launched is the Occupational Shortage Index (OSI) to match labour market demand and supply, enhancing employment outcomes across India. Based on ILO methodology and quarterly PLFS data, the OSI provides data-driven insights into occupations facing shortages, helping align job seekers’ skills with industry demands.

The OSI will support policymakers, training institutions, and businesses in bridging skill gaps in high-demand sectors. The index is designed to enable more effective decision-making in workforce planning and skill development initiatives, optimizing job matching and guiding State governments and employers in creating targeted skill development programs.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Why Village People’s YMCA is actually a great fit for team Trump

Source: The Conversation – UK – By William Rees, PhD Candidate in Modern American History, University of Exeter

  • MIL-OSI Canada: New operator will revitalize historic site experience at Fort Steele

Source: Government of Canada regional news

Cranbrook Archives, Museum and Landmark Society (CAMAL), the new operator of Fort Steele Heritage Town, is planning new, dynamic, interactive and diverse visitor experiences that complement the site’s community traditions.

“Fort Steele isn’t just a tourism attraction for visitors,” said Spencer Chandra Herbert, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “It holds great historical value for our province and plays an important role in telling B.C.’s story. This new partnership is key to ensuring high-quality historic experiences at this site that will keep visitors coming back.”

The provincial heritage site and national historic site is a key attraction for the East Kootenay region of British Columbia, drawing visitors worldwide. Visitors can experience the 19th century through its restored buildings, interpreters and exhibits. There are more than 60 original or accurately reconstructed buildings from the 1890s, offering an immersive cultural and educational experience. It includes activities such as gold panning, stagecoach rides, tours and heritage trades demonstrations.

CAMAL is planning to work with area First Nations to find ways to collaborate on the site’s exhibits and programming. These initiatives aim to deepen visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the history and culture of Indigenous communities in British Columbia.

“We are dedicated to preserving and promoting Fort Steele, while bringing a renewed vibrancy to the site through innovative programs, storytelling and visitor experiences,” said Keith Powell, chair of the CAMAL. “We are excited to build upon the site’s legacy, focusing on Fort Steele’s role as an integral part of the local and regional tourism economy, and strengthening its position as a significant cultural and historical destination.”

CAMAL begins a six-year operations contract with the Province on April 1, 2025, with potential for renewal. CAMAL was selected as the site operator for Fort Steele Heritage Town following a publicly posted request-for-proposals process in late 2024.

Friends of Fort Steele Society has been operating Fort Steele Heritage Town from 2004 and will continue until March 2025. It oversaw numerous capital works developments, including a new visitor centre and focused efforts on repairing Fort Steele’s steam train. The Province provided $500,000 to support these projects, which are expected to be complete in spring and ready for the 2025 season.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Enhanced visitor experiences planned for Barkerville historic site

Source: Government of Canada regional news

Visitors can look forward to continuing strong operations, along with expanded hands-on demonstrations and interpretations at Barkerville Historic Town & Park and Cottonwood House Historic Site as part of the site operator’s proposed plan.

“Barkerville and Cottonwood House are among B.C.’s most iconic heritage destinations that visitors love to visit again and again,” said Spencer Chandra Herbert, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “I can’t wait to see the new exhibits our partner, Barkerville Heritage Trust, is developing that will further enrich the storytelling and historical experience at this site.”

Barkerville’s resource-development history dates back to 1862, when Billy Barker struck gold at Williams Creek, ushering in the gold rush that drew fortune seekers from all over the world and made Barkerville the largest town in Western Canada at that time. Barkerville offers visitors a chance to step back in time to the late 1800s with its interpreters in period costumes, stagecoach rides and a collection of more than 500,000 artifacts, including 100 preserved heritage structures.

Barkerville Heritage Trust will continue as the site operator for the next seven years, with potential for renewal, as part of a new management contract with the Province. The trust is planning additional interactive activities to let visitors experience everyday life on the Cariboo homestead during the gold-rush era. This includes an increase in cultural programming, a greater diversity of stories that are part of B.C.’s heritage, particularly the culture and history of area First Nations, and more tourism offerings outside of the site’s peak season.

“We are thrilled to continue our stewardship of these cherished heritage assets, and with decades of experience operating Barkerville and Cottonwood House, our team has gained invaluable insights that will guide us as we work to deliver world-class tourism experiences for visitors over the next seven years,” said Al Richmond, chair of the Barkerville Heritage Trust. “We will be looking to expand the offerings at Cottonwood House, as well as sending Barkerville’s historical interpreters back to the Richfield Courthouse and continuing with our Indigenous and Chinese cultural interpretation. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support and concern from the public during last year’s wildfires, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who stood by us during that challenging time.”

The provincial heritage site’s popular 100 days of Barkerville season runs from May 31 until Sept. 7, 2025.

“Barkerville Heritage Trust is a trusted steward and operator of this iconic tourism destination in the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast region,” said Amy Thacker, CEO, Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism.  “Barkerville Historic Town & Park’s exhibits and interactive demonstrations for tourists and locals provide an incredible opportunity for people to explore, discover our history and create lasting memories. We look forward to sharing Barkerville’s plans with the community and inviting people to come back to see what’s new.”

The new heritage site management agreement begins on April 1, 2025. Barkerville Heritage Trust has operated the historical site since 2005.

    Quick Facts:

    • Barkerville Heritage Trust was selected as the site operator for Barkerville Historic Town & Park and Cottonwood House Historic Site following a publicly posted request-for-proposals process in late 2024.
