  • MIL-OSI China: Flick focused on Clasico win in La Liga

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said Saturday that his players would not be looking at the La Liga table ahead of Sunday’s fourth match of the season against Real Madrid.

Barca goes into the game having won the first 3 meetings between the two Spanish giants, with the most recent triumph in the Copa del Rey final a fortnight ago.

A fourth win would put Flick’s side 7 points clear of Madrid at the top of La Liga, but Flick told the press that assuring the title was not the first thought in his players’ minds.

“If you ask the players, they always want to win a Clasico. The standings don’t matter (…) We’re focused on this game to give it everything,” he insisted.

Flick insisted his players were in good shape, despite the efforts they made in Tuesday’s 4-3 Champions League defeat away to Inter Milan, after 120 minutes of football.

“This has nothing to do with them lacking energy because they have it. They’re doing a fantastic job, and we want to continue like that,” he said, adding that the squad had discussed matters after Tuesday’s European disappointment.

“We’ve been talking about the players’ feelings. It’s also important to talk about these things openly. In a game like El Clasico, you have to give 100 percent and be at your best. We want to be active, dominant. Madrid is a fantastic team, but we’re playing at home and our fans support us,” commented the German.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Speech by SCST at Europe Day Opening Ceremony (English only)

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region

Following is the speech by the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Miss Rosanna Law, at the Europe Day Opening Ceremony today (May 10):

Ambassador Harvey Rouse, Head of the EU (European Union) Office to Hong Kong and Macao, Consuls General (of European Union Member States), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, dear French little friends over there,

Good afternoon. It gives me great pleasure to join you at the opening of Europe Day Festival. And actually indeed, thank you very much for the support that I have got from different Consuls General ever since my appointment to the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism. I have actually seen quite a number of you over different events in the last five months.

On today’s special occasion, I would like to highlight the pivotal role Hong Kong plays as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. Hong Kong has deep-rooted cultural origin and bond from the Mainland of China, but we also have for decades cultivated strong cultural ties with foreign countries, including the European Union (EU) and its member states. Through regular exchanges, we have built a solid foundation of mutual understanding and collaboration. I am most delighted to learn from Ambassador Rouse that our local artists, Opera Hong Kong, will be performing “The Story of Carmen”, a classic European Opera, at today’s Festival. In fact, Carmen, was also performed at our Hong Kong Arts Festival earlier this year and I was one of the audience enjoying it. This is an example of how we can bring talent and tradition from different parts of the world, showcasing our efforts and achievements in promoting cultural exchange and collaboration.

Hong Kong will continue to leverage our distinct institutional strengths under “one country, two systems” to “bring in” diverse cultures from around the world while enabling Chinese culture to “go global”.

Hong Kong’s creative industries are now economic drivers for our economy. The Greater Bay Area Development and the Belt and Road Initiative provide unprecedented opportunities for our creative talents to shine on the global stage. By working closely with EU member states, we aim to unlock even greater potential for cultural exchanges and economic growth. Thank you very much for having our local Hong Kong artist to do the backdrop named after this meaningful event.

Sports is another area under my portfolio that is full of exciting opportunities. The Kai Tak Sports Park, Hong Kong’s largest-ever sports infrastructure, was officially commissioned in March this year. I am sure many of you were among the first to enjoy our signature rugby event, Hong Kong Sevens, at this state-of-the-art stadium in end March. Building on that success, we hosted mega international and local concerts in April, each drawing over 40 000 fans per show. And I believe quite a number of you were there for the Coldplay concert either. We have another series of concerts this weekend as well called Mayday from Taiwan, who is also performing in Hong Kong and they pledged to come back every May to perform here. We will fully utilise the opportunities that this new venue present to Hong Kong and stage more mega sports events and competitions for the enjoyment of all. And of course, larger venue means larger parties. As some of you may know, we will soon welcome international football club teams to play at both the Hong Kong Stadium and the Kai Tak Stadium in end May and late July, featuring Manchester United versus Hong Kong, China Representative Team, Liverpool versus AC Milan from Italy, as well as Arsenal versus Tottenham Hotspur. To sports fans from around the world and particularly the European Union – please stay tuned for more exciting sports events in Hong Kong later this year. Through these sporting events, my bureau will continue our efforts in fostering greater passion for sports.

On tourism, leveraging the robust foundation built over the years, we aspire to further consolidate Hong Kong’s position as a premier world-class tourism destination. With the concerted efforts of the Government and industry players, we witness a strong comeback of our tourism industry after the pandemic. In the first four months of 2025, we welcomed a total of 16 million visitors, representing an increase by 1.2 times as compared to the same period in 2023 when Hong Kong started to resume normal travel. The rebound is particularly strong among visitors from the European Union, which register a surge by 1.4 times compared to 2023. Quoting the Labour Day Golden Week as another example, we recorded a total of around 1.1 million inbound visitors to Hong Kong, among which the number of non-Mainland visitors was around 180 000, representing a year-on-year increase of about 31 per cent. These underscore the resilience of our tourism industry and Hong Kong’s enduring appeal as a world-class travel destination. To ensure continued growth, the Government promulgated the Development Blueprint for Hong Kong’s Tourism Industry 2.0 last December, setting out our vision and mission over the next five years. With the steadfast support and contribution of our industry partners, I am confident that we will reach new heights on tourism in the years to come.

Before I close, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the European Union for organising this wonderful event of Europe Day and subsequent events as outlined by Ambassador Rouse just now. I wish it every success and everyone an enjoyable time. Thank you.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Local students’ Hexagon Art brings joy and connection to new ODHS Seaside office

    Source: US State of Oregon

span dir=”ltr”>Visitors and staff have recently noticed a new visual spark as they enter the Child Welfare lobby of the Oregon Department of Human Services Seaside offices. As you walk into the Child Welfare main lobby, you can see on the wall to your right an array of hexagon-shaped art. There’s a painting of a soccer player, a sloth hanging upside down from a branch, a mountain with a lake at its feet, a rainbow, a gray and white dog and many more scenes. Some hexagons have inspiring words on them, such as “LOVE,”“You’re STRONG!,”“Kindness” and “Food Makes You Happy.”

The art was created by 60 students from Warrenton Middle School and Warrenton Grade School especially for the ODHS new Seaside office. The office recently opened at 1111 Roosevelt Drive near the Seaside Outlet Mall stores. The office houses Child Welfare, Oregon Eligibility Partnership and Self-Sufficiency Programs, which support people with food and health care benefits and other services.

“It’s been amazing. It’s the first thing everybody sees. A lot of people spend time admiring the art. Some of the words on the hexagons were created on the school’s 3-D printer. Everybody sees something different in the pieces,” Kaylin Hammond, Child Welfare Resource Developer, said.

Hammond said she “had this off-the-wall idea” for the new office space, so she met with Warrenton Schools Art Teacher Heidi Lent and her students. It was the students came up with the hexagon idea symbolizing the interdependence of bringing the school and community together. It is modeled after the Interdependence Hexagon Project. The themes typically are social justice, identity, peace and the environment.

“The hexagon is a compilation of interdependent lines, like human relationships. It shows, as an artist, how we are interconnected. Our focus was how are we interconnected in our community and our county and our school,” Lent said.

On the back of each hexagon, students were asked to explain the meaning of their creation. Here are some of what the students wrote:

    • The softball players showing girls high-fiving each other: “Sports and kindness because usually at the end of games we give high-fives, thanking the other team. Being kind through your sports.”
    • Sloth – “The sloth was what I was connected to because my mom bought it for me and I care about my mom deeply.”
    • A body looking up at the words: ‘youth’ and ‘heart, 3-D printed: “Hey little one don’t waste your youth on a broken heart ’cause before you know it, it’ll be gone.” –Livingston, Atlas lyrics.
    • The boy sitting next to dog with a tennis ball: “Representing never being alone. The dog is there to comfort him and keep him safe.”
    • Dog and little girl, nose to nose: “My dog just passed away. Every time I was sad my dog was there to comfort me. How do you get comfort?”
    • Newspaper collage with the word ‘LOVE’ in it: “Love is in the middle. as we love our community.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: Tracing radiation through the Marshall Islands: Reflections from a veteran Greenpeace nuclear campaigner

SPECIAL REPORT: By Shaun Burnie of Greenpeace

We’ve visited Ground Zero. Not once, but three times. But for generations, before these locations were designated as such, they were the ancestral home to the people of the Marshall Islands.

As part of a team of Greenpeace scientists and specialists from the Radiation Protection Advisers team, we have embarked on a six-week tour on board the Rainbow Warrior, sailing through one of the most disturbing chapters in human history: between 1946 and 1958, the United States detonated 67 nuclear bombs across the Marshall Islands — equivalent to 7200 Hiroshima explosions.

During this period, testing nuclear weapons at the expense of wonderful ocean nations like the Marshall Islands was considered an acceptable practice, or as the US put it, “for the good of mankind”.

Instead, the radioactive fallout left a deep and complex legacy — one that is both scientific and profoundly human, with communities displaced for generations.

The Rainbow Warrior coming into port in Majuro, Marshall Islands. Between March and April 2025 it embarked on a six-week mission around the Pacific nation to elevate calls for nuclear and climate justice; and support independent scientific research into the impacts of decades-long nuclear weapons testing by the US government. Image: © Bianca Vitale/Greenpeace

Between March and April, we travelled on the Greenpeace flagship vessel, the Rainbow Warrior, throughout the Marshall Islands, including to three northern atolls that bear the most severe scars of Cold War nuclear weapons testing:

    • Enewetak atoll, where, on Runit Island, stands a massive leaking concrete dome beneath which lies plutonium-contaminated waste, a result of a partial “clean-up” of some of the islands after the nuclear tests;
    • Bikini atoll, a place so beautiful, yet rendered uninhabitable by some of the most powerful nuclear detonations ever conducted; and
    • Rongelap atoll, where residents were exposed to radiation fallout and later convinced to return to contaminated land, part of what is now known as Project 4.1, a US medical experiment to test humans’  exposure to radiation.

This isn’t fiction, nor the distant past. It’s a chapter of history still alive through the environment, the health of communities, and the data we’re collecting today.

Each location we visit, each sample we take, adds to a clearer picture of some of the long-term impacts of nuclear testing—and highlights the importance of continuing to document, investigate, and attempt to understand and share these findings.

These are our field notes from a journey through places that hold important lessons for science, justice, and global accountability.

Our mission: why are we here?
With the permission and support of the Marshallese government, a group of Greenpeace science and radiation experts, together with independent scientists, are in the island nation to assess, investigate, and document the long-term environmental and radiological consequences of nuclear weapons testing in the Marshall Islands.

Our mission is grounded in science. We’re conducting field sampling and radiological surveys to gather data on what radioactivity remains in the environment — isotopes such as caesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium-239/240. These substances are released during nuclear explosions and can linger in the environment for decades, posing serious health risks, such as increased risk of cancers in organs and bones.

But this work is not only about radiation measurements, it is also about bearing witness.

We are here in solidarity with Marshallese communities who continue to live with the consequences of decisions made decades ago, without their consent and far from the public eye.

Stop 1: Enewetak Atoll — the dome that shouldn’t exist

The Runit Dome with the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior in the background. Image: © Greenpeace/Chewy C. Lin

At the far western edge of the Marshall Islands is Enewetak. The name might not ring a bell for many, but this atoll was the site of 43 US nuclear detonations. Today, it houses what may be one of the most radioactive places in the world — the Runit Dome.

Once a tropical paradise thick with coconut palms, Runit Island is capped by a massive concrete structure the size of a football field. Under this dome — cracked, weather-worn, and only 46 centimetres thick in some places — lies 85,000 cubic metres of radioactive waste. These substances are not only confined to the crater — they are also found across the island’s soil, rendering Runit Island uninhabitable for all time.

The contrast between what it once was and what it has become is staggering. We took samples near the dome’s base, where rising sea levels now routinely flood the area.

We collected coconut from the island, which will be processed and prepared in the Rainbow Warrior’s onboard laboratory. Crops such as coconut are a known vector for radioactive isotope transfer, and tracking levels in food sources is essential for understanding long-term environmental and health risks.

The local consequences of this simple fact are deeply unjust. While some atolls in the Marshall Islands can harvest and sell coconut products, the people of Enewetak are prohibited from doing so because of radioactive contamination.

They have lost not only their land and safety but also their ability to sustain themselves economically. The radioactive legacy has robbed them of income and opportunity.

Measuring and collecting coconut samples. Image: © Greenpeace/Chewy C. Lin

One of the most alarming details about this dome is that there is no lining beneath the structure — it is in direct contact with the environment, while containing some of the most hazardous long-lived substances ever to exist on planet Earth. It was never built to withstand flooding, sea level rise, and climate change.

The scientific questions are urgent: how much of this material is already leaking into the lagoon? What are the exposure risks to marine ecosystems and local communities?

We are here to help answer questions with new, independent data, but still, being in the craters and walking on this ground where nuclear Armageddon was unleashed is an emotional and surreal journey.

Stop 2: Bikini — a nuclear catastrophe, labelled ‘for the good of mankind’

Aerial shot of Bikini atoll, Marshall Islands. The Greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior can be seen in the upper left. Image: © Greenpeace/Chewy C. Lin

Unlike Chernobyl or Fukushima, where communities were devastated by catastrophic accidents, Bikini tells a different story. This was not an accident.

The nuclear destruction of Bikini was deliberate, calculated, and executed with full knowledge that entire ways of life were going to be destroyed.

Bikini Atoll is incredibly beautiful and would look idyllic on any postcard. But we know what lies beneath: the site of 23 nuclear detonations, including Castle Bravo, the largest ever nuclear weapons test conducted by the United States.

Castle Bravo alone released more than 1000 times the explosive yield of the Hiroshima bomb. The radioactive fallout massively contaminated nearby islands and their populations, together with thousands of US military personnel.

Bikini’s former residents were forcibly relocated in 1946 before nuclear testing began, with promises of a safe return. But the atoll is still uninhabited, and most of the new generations of Bikinians have never seen their home island.

As we stood deep in the forest next to a massive concrete blast bunker, reality hit hard — behind its narrow lead-glass viewing window, US military personnel once watched the evaporation of Bikini lagoon.

Bikini Islanders board a landing craft vehicle personnel (LCVP) as they depart from Bikini Atoll in March 1946. Image: © United States Navy

On our visit, we noticed there’s a spectral quality to Bikini. The homes of the Bikini islanders are long gone. In its place now stand a scattering of buildings left by the US Department of Energy: rusting canteens, rotting offices, sleeping quarters with peeling walls, and traces of the scientific experiments conducted here after the bombs fell.

On dusty desks, we found radiation reports, notes detailing crop trials, and a notebook meticulously tracking the application of potassium to test plots of corn, alfalfa, lime, and native foods like coconut, pandanus, and banana. The potassium was intended to block the uptake of caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, by plant roots.

The logic was simple: if these crops could be decontaminated, perhaps one day Bikini could be repopulated.

We collected samples of coconuts and soil — key indicators of internal exposure risk if humans were to return. Bikini raises a stark question: What does “safe” mean, and who gets to decide?

The US declared parts of Bikini habitable in 1970, only to evacuate people again eight years later after resettled families suffered from radiation exposure. The science is not abstract here. It is personal. It is human. It has real consequences.

Stop 3: Rongelap — setting for Project 4.1

The abandoned church on Rongelap atoll. Image: © Greenpeace/Chewy C. Lin

The Rainbow Warrior arrived at the eastern side of Rongelap atoll, anchoring one mile from the centre of Rongelap Island, the church spire and roofs of “new” buildings reflecting the bright sun.

n 1954, fallout from the Castle Bravo nuclear detonation on Bikini blanketed this atoll in radioactive ash — fine, white powder that children played in, thinking it was snow. The US government waited three days to evacuate residents, despite knowing the risks. The US government declared it safe to return to Rongelap in 1957 — but it was a severely contaminated environment. The very significant radiation exposure to the Rongelap population caused severe health impacts: thyroid cancers, birth defects such as “jellyfish babies”, miscarriages, and much more.

In 1985, after a request to the US government to evacuate was dismissed, the Rongelap community asked Greenpeace to help relocate them from their ancestral lands. Using the first Rainbow Warrior, and over a period of 10 days and four trips, 350 residents collectively dismantled their homes, bringing everything with them — including livestock, and 100 metric tons of building material — where they resettled on the islands of Mejatto and Ebeye on Kwajalein atoll.

It is a part of history that lives on in the minds of the Marshallese people we meet in this ship voyage — in the gratitude they still express, the pride in keeping the fight for justice, and in the pain of still not having a permanent, safe home.

Greenpeace representatives and displaced Rongelap community come together on Mejatto, Marshall Islands to commemorate the 40 years since the Rainbow Warrior evacuated the island’s entire population in May 1985 due to the impacts of US nuclear weapons testing. Image: © Greenpeace/Chewy C. Lin

Now, once again, we are standing on their island of Rongelap, walking past abandoned buildings and rusting equipment, some of it dating from the 1980s and 1990s — a period when the US Department of Energy launched a push to encourage resettlement declaring that the island was safe — a declaration that this time, the population welcomed with mistrust, not having access to independent scientific data and remembering the deceitful relocation of some decades before.

Here, once again, we sample soil and fruits that could become food if people came back. It is essential to understand ongoing risks — especially for communities considering whether and how to return.

This is not the end. It is just the beginning

The team of Greenpeace scientists and independent radiation experts on Rongelap atoll, Marshall Islands, with the Rainbow Warrior in the background. Shaun Burnie (author of the article) is first on the left. Image: © Greenpeace/Chewy C. Lin

Our scientific mission is to take measurements, collect samples, and document contamination. But that’s not all we’re bringing back.

We carry with us the voices of the Marshallese who survived these tests and are still living with their consequences. We carry images of graves swallowed by tides near Runit Dome, stories of entire cultures displaced from their homelands, and measurements of radiation showing contamination still persists after many decades.

There are 9700 nuclear warheads still held by military powers around the world – mostly in the United States and Russian arsenals. The Marshall Islands was one of the first nations to suffer the consequences of nuclear weapons — and the legacy persists today.

We didn’t come to speak for the Marshallese. We came to listen, to bear witness, and to support their demand for justice. We plan to return next year, to follow up on our research and to make results available to the people of the Marshall Islands.

And we will keep telling these stories — until justice is more than just a word.

Kommol Tata (“thank you” in the beautiful Marshallese language) for following our journey.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ranking Member Markey Hosts Virtual Discussion with Small Business Owners on the Impacts of Trump’s Tariffs

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Massachusetts Ed Markey
Washington (May 8, 2025) – Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee Ranking Member Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today held a virtual listening session with small business owners in Massachusetts and small business owners who serve the Commonwealth on the devastating impacts the Trump Tariffs are having on them.
“Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy, but to small business owners, Trump’s Tariffs are back breaking. Trump’s Tariffs have cost small businesses more than $9,000 every second since he announced his chaotic, reckless policy. This administration is only working to protect the interest of big businesses, telling small businesses to ‘wait it out.’ This is unacceptable. Small businesses live day to day, week to week, or even month to month. They cannot afford to wait and see what happens in Washington – their livelihoods and communities depend on their ability to operate. That is why I introduced the Small Business Liberation Act. This bill would provide small businesses with the relief they need. This should not be a partisan issue, and I will continue to fight to pass this legislation,” said Ranking Member Markey.
“I operate a USA based manufacturing business where our raw materials – green coffee – literally cannot be produced in the US, yet we are still subject to tariffs. These additional taxes (which is effectively what they are) are sending shockwaves through an industry that was already facing record high prices. We have no other choice but to raise our prices and pass some of these costs to our consumers.  But of course there is a ceiling to what people can and will pay for coffee, so we risk alienating our customer base, driving them back to the bigger businesses, like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, and contributing to continued inflationary economy.  The choices are terrible,” said Shayna Ferullo, Owner of Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters.
“These aren’t luxury items for us. They’re the foundation of what we do — and when prices double, so do the barriers to growth, opportunity, and community impact. When costs go up and margins shrink, it’s not just our business that feels it — it’s the people we’re training, the clients we serve, and the communities we’re trying to uplift. Before policies are passed, we’re simply asking for a seat at the table — because decisions made at the top are felt most by businesses at the street level,” said Steeve Louis-Charles, Co-founder of Boston Pro Sound.
“I will run out of inventory in less than 2-3 months.  I can no longer afford to bring my products into the USA.  If I can’t figure something out quickly, I will have to shut down my business.  I will no longer have revenue to pay my employees, bills, vendors, and loans.  I will lose my home.  Small, American-owned businesses need immediate relief from tariffs,” said Beth Benike, Founder of Busy Baby.
“My lease needs to be renewed and given the uncertainty around the new tariffs, I don’t know if I can afford to stay open unless I shift to an entirely new financial model. In less than two weeks we will have to make a decision on the future of our company that could lock at least 100 people back into a cycle of generational poverty,” said Brandale Randolph, Founder of 1854 Cycling Company.
“As a small, fourth-generation, family-owned business founded on the ‘American Dream,’ we fully support bringing businesses back to the United States. However, handcuffing us with increased costs and decreased availability on products that are necessary for our success, is making us less competitive, not more competitive,” said Zack Rocheleau, Supply Chain Manager, Rocheleau Tool & Die.
“Today, Main Street Alliance members Beth Benike of Busy Baby, Jen Faigel of the Commonwealth Kitchen, and Shayna Ferullo of Snowy Owl shared their personal stories with Sen. Markey about the impact of the Trump Tariffs. Without small business relief, shelves are going to go empty and entrepreneurs will go bankrupt. That’s why MSA strongly supports Sen. Markey’s ‘Small Business Liberation Act’ and urges members of the US Senate to co-sponsor this essential legislation,” said Shawn Phetteplace, National Campaigns Director, Main Street Alliance.
“The Black Economic Council of Massachusetts (BECMA) is incredibly grateful to Senator Markey and his team for hosting a listening session that explored the impact federal trade policies are having on small businesses. Brandale Randolph of 1854 Cycling and Steeve Louis-Charles of Boston Professional Sound Inc., BECMA members, were able to share how detrimental tariffs and the subsequent supply chain challenges already have been to their businesses. Small business is the backbone of the Massachusetts economy, and we will continue to advocate for policies that will positively impact small business growth and sustainability,” said Nicole Obi, President & CEO of BECMA.
“The tariffs are a nightmare for our small business community, including the farms, food trucks, caterers, product companies, and restaurants we represent and work with. Small businesses, unlike large businesses, don’t have teams of lobbyists nor safety nets underneath us. We are already seeing a domino effect on an awful lot of people that will be hurt: when our businesses go down, the insurance brokers go down, the drivers go down, the distributors go down, and the marketing teams go down,” said Jen Faigel, co-founder and Executive Director of CommonWealth Kitchen.
This week, Ranking Member Markey, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) introduced the Small Business Liberation Act, legislation that would exempt small businesses from the broad, global tariffs imposed as a result of the national emergency declared on April 2, 2025, by President Trump. The Small Business Liberation Act gives the more than 34 million U.S. small businesses needed relief from the overly broad, reckless Trump Tariffs that are wreaking havoc on their businesses.
Ranking Member Markey recently wrote to Small Business Administrator Loeffler, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, calling on the Trump administration to exempt U.S. small businesses from the reckless Trump Tariffs, and afford them the same relief that the administration is giving billion-dollar tech giants such as Apple and Google.
Previously, Ranking Member Markey, along with Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and all Democrats on the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee wrote to Administrator Loeffler, urging her to take immediate action to address the impacts of Trump’s reckless tariff policies on small businesses.
In April 2025, Ranking Member Markey released a report, “The Trump Tariffs: A Small Business Crisis,” which details the disastrous impacts of Trump’s tariff policies on small businesses across the country.

  • MIL-OSI Global: ‘I don’t even recognise myself anymore’: the reality of eating disorders in sport

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Zoe John, Lecturer in Criminology, Swansea University

    Istvan Csak/Shutterstock

The UK is facing what charities are calling an eating disorder epidemic, with an estimated 1.25 million people affected. These conditions have the highest mortality rate of any mental health illness, making early intervention and education urgent.

Yet, within the world of sport, eating disorders often go undetected and unchallenged. Disordered behaviour, such as restricting food intake, purging, binge eating, or abusing laxatives, are sometimes normalised in competitive environments, embedded into routines and disguised as dedication.

Eating disorders thrive in silence. They’re secretive, isolating and can affect athletes of all genders, ages and backgrounds, whether at grassroots or elite levels.

In sport, several factors can trigger or worsen disordered behaviour: pressure to perform, body dissatisfaction, weight-category requirements and cultural ideals of what an “athletic” body should look like.

In this context, harmful practices like dehydration, extreme weight-cutting and overtraining often become accepted – and are sometimes even encouraged.

    Read more:
How fighters make weight in combat sports – and regain it for the match

In some sports, the risks are tragically clear. Take bodybuilding. One heartbreaking example is 20-year-old Jodi Vance, who died from heart failure caused by dehydration during preparations for a competition.

In combat sports and martial arts, eating disorders are frequently acknowledged, yet meaningful solutions are rarely discussed. Fighters like Paige VanZant and Kay Hansen have openly shared their struggles with disordered eating, which in many sports, is still dismissed as just “part of the process”.

    Extreme tactics

Even worse, some coaches perpetuate a toxic culture by fat-shaming athletes or joking about serious conditions like bulimia. In such environments, young athletes can become trapped in cycles of physical and emotional harm.

In my own research with UK-based mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters, I spent months observing and interviewing athletes across various gyms. Many described extreme weight-loss tactics before fights – dropping both fat and water weight in dangerously short time frames. These methods took a toll on both their bodies and mental health.

I witnessed fighters collapse from exhaustion and dehydration. I heard coaches make jokes about eating disorders. One fighter told me: “I don’t even recognise myself anymore,” echoing the public experiences of UFC fighter Paddy Pimblett, who has shared his struggles with binge eating and body image.

These stories hit close to home.

During my own time in MMA, I developed atypical anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. I was praised for rapid weight loss – not for my skill or performance. At one point, I was training to the point of experiencing heart palpitations, dizziness and nausea. Yet, these symptoms were brushed off as signs of “good training”.

    Eating disorders don’t discriminate

Even when I lived in a larger body, I was still suffering from an eating disorder. This is a crucial reminder: you cannot tell if someone is unwell just by looking at them. This isn’t just an issue in fight sports. Disordered eating affects athletes across many disciplines.

Footballer Katrina Gorry, cricketer Freddy Flintoff and cyclist Davide Cimolai are just a few high-profile athletes who have spoken publicly about their experiences.

In fact, disordered thoughts can affect athletes at any stage of their careers. Today, even after competing internationally in American football and Australian rules football, I still live with disordered thinking around food and body image.

Elite female athletes can be particularly vulnerable. According to the 2023 female athlete health report, 74% of respondents said they didn’t feel like they looked like an athlete and 91% worried about their calorie intake.

The 2024 BBC study on elite British sportswomen found similar results, reflecting the persistent pressure to conform to narrow body ideals.

    Read more:
Elite female athletes at greater risk of eating disorders

There have been some encouraging policy changes. In MMA, emergency rules now ban extreme weight-cutting methods like IV rehydration, where fluids and electrolytes are administered directly into a vein, bypassing the digestive system. British Gymnastics, the body governing competitive gymnastics in the UK, has banned coaches from weighing athletes – a major move given the sport’s documented issues.

However, these steps are just the beginning. Power imbalances still exist across many sports, where coaches wield enormous influence over an athlete’s health, body and sense of self.

Coaches can either be a force for recovery – or part of the problem. They must be better trained to spot early signs of disordered behaviour, provide support and promote a culture that values mental wellbeing over appearance.

To create safer sporting environments, we need better signposting for athletes on how to get help, education for coaches and staff on eating disorder awareness, a cultural shift from bodily perfection and towards sustainable performance and health and athlete-first policies that protect both physical and mental wellbeing.

Recovery is possible. But prevention – through awareness, education and empathy – can save lives long before treatment is ever needed.

Sport should be a place for strength, growth and resilience – not hidden harm.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: On your marks and get set for the 2025 Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon

    Source: City of Leeds

Thousands of people will be going for glory on Sunday (May 11) in the marathon, which is being held in partnership with Clarion by the not-for-profit sporting events company Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All with support from Leeds City Council.

Taking place this year for the third time, the event’s previous two editions have been notable for the inspirational atmosphere generated by the crowds lining the 26.2-mile route.

And people across Leeds are being encouraged to once again turn out and show their support for an occasion that provides a perfect tribute to the life and achievements of the late rugby league legend Rob Burrow.

As in previous years, the on-course atmosphere will be given a tuneful additional lift by musical entertainment from various groups and acts, including the Leeds Pipe Band, Leeds Rock Choir and Otley Ukulele Orchestra.

Residents and visitors are also being encouraged to familiarise themselves with the programme of temporary road closures that will be in place to help ensure the day goes according to plan.

The marathon will start and end at AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium, with runners following a circular route that initially winds around Woodhouse Moor before striking out for Adel, Lawnswood, Bramhope, Pool in Wharfedale and Otley. The Leeds Half Marathon, which is also being held on Sunday, will use much of the same route. The two events have together attracted more than 12,000 entrants.

Part of St Michael’s Lane in Headingley will close to vehicles on Sunday from 4am before sections of Cardigan Road and Kirkstall Lane/North Lane follow suit at 6am. Closures of selected roads will kick in between 6am and 8am in other parts of Headingley and Far Headingley.

Further closures will then come into force from 8.30am in the Adel, Lawnswood and Bramhope areas, and from 9am around Pool in Wharfedale and Otley.

The marathon will begin at 9am, with competitors in the half marathon setting out from Headingley at 10am.

Affected roads along the route will be reopened on a rolling basis through the day as soon as it is safe to do so.

More road closure information – including a list of vehicle crossing points – can be found here.

People travelling to Headingley can catch return park and ride bus services from Elland Road and Stourton. Shuttle buses will also be running between Cookridge Street in the city centre and Headingley.

Buses will be operating between Headingley and two spectator hubs out on the course, one on Otley Road in Adel – about a mile from the drop-off point at Holt Park’s Asda – and the other at Otley Market Place.

There will be no dedicated event parking in Headingley itself.

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, said:

“As someone who has run the first two editions of the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon and will be taking part again on Sunday, I know just how special the event is.

“The atmosphere on the course was electric in both 2023 and 2024, and it would be lovely to see plenty of spectators out creating the same sort of buzz for 2025.

“The delivery of an event on this scale involves a huge amount of hard work and my thanks go to everyone involved at Run For All and the council, as well as the hundreds of volunteers who will be giving up their time on Sunday.

“The road closures that will help ensure the day passes off safely and successfully will inevitably also cause disruption to some people’s normal routines and, as always, their patience and support is much appreciated.

“Please do take a few minutes, if you haven’t already, to familiarise yourself with all the relevant traffic and travel plans ahead of an occasion that I’m sure will showcase the very best of our city.”

The marathon’s partner charities and good causes are the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association, Leeds Hospitals Charity, 4Ed, Alzheimer’s Society, Candlelighters, Happy Days Children’s Charity, Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Leeds North & West Foodbank, Leeds Rhinos Foundation, Macmillan Cancer Support, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, Stand Against MND and St Gemma’s Hospice.

After being diagnosed with MND in 2019, Leeds Rhinos great Rob worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the condition and deliver improved care for those affected by it.

Sunday’s programme features a new addition for 2025 in the shape of the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon Relay, which will see teams of seven tackling different legs of the full route.

Run For All is also linking up with Leeds Beckett University to stage the inaugural MND Mile tomorrow (Saturday, May 10). Taking place at Leeds Beckett’s Headingley campus, the event’s mile-long course has been designed to cater for participants of all ages and abilities.

Tristan Batley-Kyle, operations director at Run For All, said:

“For an event of this scale, significant road closures will be required. We are working in partnership with Leeds City Council, emergency services and multi-agency planning groups to make sure the event is operated safely and securely.

“We would like to thank all residents in advance for their understanding, and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused. Please be assured that all closures will be lifted as soon as possible. We thank you for your support of the 2025 Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon and Leeds Half Marathon.”

    Note to editors:

Run For All is a not-for-profit company that forms part of the lasting legacy of the late amateur athlete and fundraiser Jane Tomlinson CBE. Jane, from Leeds, made headlines around the world by taking part in a series of incredible endurance events despite being diagnosed with an incurable cancer.

  • MIL-OSI Global: From pulpit to pitch: Pope Francis used sport to get his message to a wider world − that could continue with baseball-loving Leo XIV

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Carmen M. Nanko-Fernández, Professor of Hispanic Theology and Ministry, Catholic Theological Union

The world of sport is “a constellation of many stars,” Pope Francis told La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian daily sports newspaper, during a wide-ranging interview in January 2021.

On April 21, 2025, that world lost, if not one of its brightest stars, then certainly one of its highest-placed advocates in Francis. In his youth, Francis was only ever a street athlete, but he was an avid and lifelong sports fan, especially when it came to soccer. In fact, Francis incorporated his love of the beautiful game into his outlook as pope – for him, sport was a way to communicate with people from all backgrounds and all corners of the globe.

With Leo XIV now installed as Francis’ successor, that sporting theme could continue in the Vatican, though the center of gravity may migrate from soccer to baseball. As befitting a U.S. pope, Leo is known to be a fan of the national pastime, in particular his native Chicago White Sox.

    Always ‘un cuervo!’

Long before the papacy, even before his first steps toward priesthood, for Jorge Mario Bergoglio – the boy who would go on to become Pope Francis – there was his hometown sports club, Buenos Aires’ San Lorenzo de Almagro.

It was “part of my cultural identity,” Francis later said, so much so that he maintained his club membership throughout his life.

That became news upon his death, when a photo of his club card went viral. Argentine sports fans noted that his membership card number, 88235, coincided with his age, 88, and the moment of his death in Argentina time: 2:35 AM.

Francis’ relationship with San Lorenzo de Almagro was marked by mutual affection. The team memorialized him in various ways. They noted how he continues to accompany them by emblazoning on their jerseys his image and the words “juntos por la eternidad” or “together forever.”

In a touching video tribute posted on social media following Francis’ death, the club affirmed his belonging, from his childhood through his papacy, as “un cuervo” – or “crow,” a nod to the nickname for the team and its fans rooted in the club’s founding by a Catholic priest. In Lunfardo, a dialect in Buenos Aires, “cuervo” is also slang for priest. For his team, “Papa Cuervo” was “never just one more fan, he was always one of us.”

    A sporting world pays tribute

And it wasn’t just his home team that mourned Francis’ death.

On the day of his passing, moments of silence preceded play from Citi Field, the home of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets, to Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, the temporary soccer venue of Spanish soccer giant Barcelona.

In Italy, soccer matches were rescheduled to honor the national period of mourning, and players and coaches from AS Roma filed into St. Peter’s Basilica to pay their respects.

Across social media platforms, the sporting world responded to the loss of one they considered their own. Spanish tennis champ Rafael Nadal tweeted his condolences and observed that the day was indeed “un día triste,” or “sad day.”

The NFL’s New Orleans Saints expressed condolences and commemorated their relationship with the pope, a connection born of a digital anomaly. Each time Francis posted #Saints on his X – formerly Twitter – account, it automatically tagged the NFL team, which did not mind the accidental blessings.

When global attention turned to speculating about the next pope, the soccer world continued to mourn and honor their star. From April 29 to May 1, each Champions League semifinal match – youth, women’s and men’s alike – was preceded by a moment of silence.

In the words of world soccer body UEFA’s president Aleksander Čeferin: “Pope Francis was a beacon of hope for… (a) humanity that will now remain orphaned of that voice – tireless and powerful – that always rose in defense of the poor, the humble, and the vulnerable to call for respect, acceptance, and equality and to implore a peace that always seemed distant …”

    Sport as language of life

For Francis, sport was more than a game or a pastime.

It was a vernacular, and soccer was his dialect. He was fluent and it showed. He recognized in sport the potential to communicate in what he called a universal language that “extends across borders, language, race, religion and ideology; it possesses the capacity to unite people, together, by fostering dialogue and acceptance.”

The online archive of his pontificate contains well over 60 sport-related audiences, messages and letters, including video greetings on occasions such as the 2014 FIFA World Cup and Super Bowl LI in 2017.

The significance of sport as a distinctive body of his papal teaching is also indicated by the Spanish release in 2024 of “Más Allá De Los Límites: El Deporte Según El Papa Francisco,” or “Beyond the Limits: Sports According to Pope Francis.” The book came with a forward by Carlo Ancelotti, the storied manager of a litany of soccer greats, including Real Madrid.

Sport emerged early as one of Jorge Bergoglio’s native tongues, bound intimately to memory, family, identity and belonging – threads also evident in his canon of teachings on sport. In “Hope,” his 2024 autobiography, Francis dedicates a chapter to sport and weaves stories of his beloved soccer throughout the book in a manner that reveals how “the experience of the people and their passions” became for him a source and site for his theology of encounter.

A commitment to inclusivity is a constitutive element in his teaching on both sport and encounter. Among those who paid tribute on Francis’ passing were the organizers of the Paralympic Games, who posted: “Today humanity lost a great man … passionate about sport and passionate about inclusion, which epitomizes everything the Paralympic Movement stands for.”

    ‘Getting in the game’

Francis urged, “‘Get in the game’ not only in sports … but also in life, in the search for the good, without fear but with courage and enthusiasm. Get in the game with others and with God … Place your talents at the service of the encounter among people, of friendship and of inclusion.”

He put this into practice with the launch and sponsorship in 2019 of Athletica Vaticana, a dedicated sports body for the city-state. He also gave his blessing and backing to St. Peter’s Cricket Club, the first-ever Vatican women’s soccer team, and Sport at the Service of Humanity, a collaborative global movement that seeks to “leverage the power of Faith and Sport as a platform for good.”

“Get in the game” was a call intended not only for athletes – amateur, collegiate, Special Olympian, professional – but for street-ballers, schoolyard players, fans and gamers of all kinds. In sports and play, Francis found the potential for a “school of peace” because they provided opportunities “to go outside of our own walls and learn how to participate, to overcome, to struggle together,” charting ways forward for church and society “to overcome all forms of discrimination and exclusion.”

Francis never forgot the joys or even the sorrows of sports as a player or as a fan. “Playing is a right,” he wrote in his memoir, “and there’s also the hallowed right not to be a champion.”

Behind every ball, he saw a kid with a dream and aspirations, and he recognized himself on the soccer field – a “pata dura,” the kid with two left feet, “sleeves rolled up, and often with grazed knees.” On the sports field, like elsewhere, he recognized and took delight in the beauty of God.

The link between the papacy and the sporting world looks set to continue under Pope Leo XIV.

The media quickly noted that soccer aficionado Francis had been succeeded by an amateur tennis player and fan.

The new pope’s brother had to resolve an online dispute by affirming Leo is a fan of the South Side’s Chicago White Sox and not the North Side’s Cubs.

Regardless, the city’s two baseball franchises responded with dueling stadium signs claiming the pope as their own. Meanwhile, ESPN reported that NBA teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, former Villanova Wildcats-turned-New York Knicks chatted about a possible alumni reunion with the newest rising star in the constellation of sports: Pope Leo XIV.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Export bar placed on £10 million Botticelli painting

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    Press release

Export bar placed on £10 million Botticelli painting

A temporary export bar has been placed on a painting of the Virgin Mary by Italian painter, Sandro Botticelli

    • The work has been valued at £10.2 million
    • The export bar will allow time for a UK gallery or institution to acquire the painting for the nation

An export bar has been placed on a painting by Italian master, Sandro Botticelli, which is at risk of leaving the UK.

Botticelli was one of the leading Florentine painters of the second half of the fifteenth century and one of the most recognisable names in art history. Botticelli became well-known for his mythological and religious paintings, often with a focus on beauty and harmony. His most famous works include The Birth of Venus and Primavera.

Valued at more than £10.2 million (£9,960,000 + £272,000 VAT) the painting depicts an image of the Virgin Mary enthroned with the Christ Child and is believed to have been painted in the 1470s, early in Botticelli’s career. If saved by a cultural institution, the painting would represent a significant addition to the body of work by Botticelli in UK collections. Very few early Botticelli’s remain in the UK and it would provide a richer and more detailed understanding of his work and the development of Florentine painting in the later fifteenth century.

The Virgin and Child Enthroned exemplifies Botticelli’s ability to combine radiant humanity and powerful spirituality. The shape and angle of the Virgin’s face bear similarities to the central Venus in Botticelli’s celebrated Primavera, painted in the late 1470s or early 1480s.

The artist has also given exceptional attention to the Virgin’s features, with the light catching her upper eyelids, the tip of her nose and the cupid’s bow of her lips.

Arts Minister, Sir Chris Bryant said:

This painting is a perfect example of Botticelli’s genius and a unique part of history.

I hope that a UK gallery is able to save this work so that it can be enjoyed by the public for generations to come.

    Christopher Baker, Committee member:

Dating from the early 1470s, this affecting devotional work, demonstrates the sophistication of Botticelli’s painting early in his career in Florence. Probably intended to inspire private prayer in a domestic setting, it is an image that has a wider resonance as it delicately explores the power of maternal love.

The cult of, or enthusiasm for Botticelli, of which it formed a part, had grown during the Victorian era and the painting arrived in Britain in 1904; it was acquired by Lady Wantage and entered the renowned Lloyd collection.

Further research on the placement of Botticelli’s work in his career and the organisation of his workshop, as well as links with the wider context of Florentine Renaissance art would all be of enormous benefit. In view of these intriguing possibilities every effort should be made to try and secure this beguiling painting for a British collection.

The Minister’s decision follows the advice of the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest.

The RCEWA Committee found that The Virgin and Child Enthroned painting met the third Waverley criterion for its outstanding significance for the study of western art and its reception in later periods, Botticelli, the process and practice of Florentine workshops, and the history of collecting in the UK.

The decision on the export licence application for the painting will be deferred for a period ending on 8 August 2025 inclusive. At the end of the first deferral period owners will have a consideration period of 15 business days to consider any offer(s) to purchase the painting at the recommended price of £9,960,000 (plus VAT of £272,000, which can be reclaimed by an eligible institution). The second deferral period will commence following the signing of an Option Agreement and will last for six months.

Offers from public bodies for less than the recommended price through the private treaty sale arrangements, where appropriate, may also be considered by the Minister. Such purchases frequently offer substantial financial benefit to a public institution wishing to acquire the item.

    Notes to editors

    3. Provenance: Oratorio of San Giuliano, in the Convent of San Giuliano, which was later bought and rebuilt by the Calasanzian order, via Faenza, Florence, by the early 19th century; Placed in the chapel of a convalescent home for the sick bretheren of the Calasanzian Order or Scuole Pie of Florence, Comezzano, near Vaggio, Figline Valdarno, Province of Florence; By inheritance with the property to the Graziani family, remaining in situ until about 1900; Giovanni Magherini Graziani (1852–1924), Poggitazzi, Terranove Bracciolini, near Arezzo, and via Pinti, Florence; By whom sold, in November 1903, to the dealer Elia Volpi, Florence; From whom bought by Harriet Sarah Jones Loyd, Lady Wantage (1837–1920), in May 1904; Thence by descent at Lockinge House, Wantage, and after 1944 at Betterton House, near Wantage, Berkshire.
    4. Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    Press release

Hertfordshire waste boss to pay £79,000 gained from illegal sites

Quarry director let waste mountains pile up way beyond legal amount. Enough waste at one site to nearly fill the Royal Albert Hall 3 times

Codicote Quarry, near Stevenage, was one of three locations at the centre of this illegal waste operation

A former teacher who filled 2 quarries in Hertfordshire with illegal waste has been ordered to pay thousands of pounds following an investigation into proceeds of crime.

Liam Winters presided over the illegal disposal of assorted rubbish at Codicote Quarry, near Stevenage.

An investigation by the Environment Agency found approximately 200,000 cubic metres of household, commercial and industrial waste, as well as electrical items, car parts, furniture, food packaging, wood and metal. It could have filled the Royal Albert Hall nearly 3 times over.

An Environment Agency investigator inspects waste hidden in a futile attempt to avoid it being found

Winters, of Warwickshire, also ignored the Environment Agency’s instructions to stop filling Anstey Quarry, at Buntingford, near Royston, with banned waste such as plastic, wood, metal and packaging, all broken into tiny pieces.

The waste piled up at Anstey Quarry scaled the height of 5 double-decker buses

He was given 17 months in prison in October 2023 for dumping the illegal waste at the 2 sites and a nearby shooting ground.

The piles of waste at Anstey reached 20 metres into the sky, the height of 5 double-decker buses.

The Anstey Quarry Company Ltd, of which Winters was a director, leased the quarry, with a permit from the Environment Agency to treat and dispose of up to 10,000 cubic metres of clean soil waste a year.

Investigators estimated as much as 250,000 cubic metres of harmful biodegradable materials was buried there.

Soil was used at all 3 sites to cover some of the waste in an attempt to avoid detection.

Judge Caroline Wigin, sitting at Luton crown court on 8 May, ordered Winters, to pay £78,835. This followed an proceeds of crime investigation by the Environment Agency’s national economic crime unit.

The money will be split between His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service and the Environment Agency. Winters faces 2 more years in prison if he doesn’t pay within 3 months. The 48-year-old, of High Street, Hillmorton, Rugby, also has to pay a victim surcharge of £120.

Barry Russell, environment manager for the Environment Agency in Hertfordshire, said:

“We are determined that waste operators who break the law don’t benefit from their crimes

“It was clear every time we visited the sites, there was no substantial change to the illegal way they were being run.

“Operations like Anstey and Codicote are damaging in many ways, including the potential or actual harm caused to the environment by inappropriate and illegal storage of waste materials, and the financial impact on businesses who follow the rules, pay their way and protect the environment.

“Despite warnings from the Environment Agency to stop, Winters and the other men carried on bringing in more illegal waste.”

The Environment Agency served an enforcement notice, ordering the business to stop taking in material at Anstey that could do damage to the ground if left in landfill.

Codicote Quarry had a permit to treat and store a small amount of soil waste, but not hold it in huge quantities. The quarry went far beyond what was authorised by the Environment Agency.

Nicholas Bramwell, now 45, of Shepherds Close, Royston, was fined £1,450 and told to pay £8,000 in costs and a £120 victim surcharge after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to burying large quantities of potentially harmful waste at Anstey Quarry and a shooting ground at Nuthampstead.

The Environment Agency found more plastic, wood and metal in sizable quantities at the firing range, where it was used to build a 10-metre high embankment.

Both men admitted to 5 counts of breaching regulation 38 (2) of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 in relation to Anstey Quarry and Nuthampstead shooting ground.

Winters faced four more charges under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 in relation to Codicote Quarry.

Judge Wigin said no costs would be awarded against Winters because he had served a custodial prison sentence.

Winters’ brother, Mark Winters, 50, of Bangor Erris, in County Mayo, received 12 months in prison in 2023, suspended for 2 years, and told to carry out 200 hours unpaid work over the waste at Codicote.

The brothers were also banned from being company directors for 8 years.

Luton crown court will sit on 9 July to decide on proceeds of crime payments and costs against Mark Winters and to sentence Codicote Quarry Ltd, of which the brothers were also directors.

There is no suggestion the owners of the 3 locations played any part in the criminal activity.

  • MIL-OSI USA: UConn Equestrian Team Achieves Highest Points in Region

    Source: US State of Connecticut

The UConn Equestrian Team achieved the status of being the regional high point team at the close of this year’s Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) competition season.

“It’s awesome,” says team captain Elinor Addonizio ‘25 (CAHNR). “I think it gives everybody a lot of hope for the future to continue doing so well.”

This year, UConn’s point total was 276. The second-place team, Boston University, had 225 points.

“It really was an incredible season,” coach Marilyn Bennett says. “I’m really proud of all of them. They put in a lot of hard work, and it really is a testament to that…It’s a great way to represent the school.”

For each show, teams choose individual riders in each event and class to be their point riders. This means those riders’ points, based on where they place in the event, count toward the team’s total.

“Essentially it comes down to the point riders who won the most and did the best,” Addonizio says.

At their home show in October, UConn’s team earned a perfect score.

“Every single point rider won their class – which is pretty much unheard of,” Addonizio says. “So, that was a really big accomplishment.”

One member of the UConn Team, Cara Bailey ‘27 (CAHNR), qualified for nationals, which will take place in May.

Currently, there are 24 showing members on the UConn Equestrian Team, and 30 members total. Riders are placed into jumping and flat event classes based on their experience and skill level.

What is unique to the IHSA competitions is that, unlike elsewhere in the equestrian world, riders do not bring horses to competitions. Instead, they are randomly assigned a horse from the hosting institution’s barn.

“You have no idea until the day of what horse you’re going to ride,” Bennett says. “So that adds a whole other element to showing…It makes it unique and really cool.”

To prepare for this challenge, the UConn team changes which horse they ride for each of their weekly practices.

This was the first year UConn competed in Region 4 with Massachusetts schools after their previous region was dissolved.

“We were pretty nervous heading into this new region because we’d never competed against these teams, and they’re all very accomplished teams,” Addonizio says. “So, it’s really, really exciting, and honestly we didn’t expect it, which made it all the more special.”

Addonizio has been a member of the team since her freshman year and was captain for the past two years.

After graduating this spring with a degree in animal science with a focus on equine breeding, Addonizio is going to New Zealand to help deliver foals for the horse racing industry. She was the 2024 recipient of the Samantha Calzone scholarship.

“I found my people and a true home, and I’m just lucky to get to ride horses every week and be with such a great group of people,” Addonizio says. “And the leadership experience that I’ve gained from it as captain has been pretty life changing.”

UConn recently announced a new Equine Science and Management major, launching in the fall of 2026.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Dmitry Chernyshenko recalled the important role of teachers, scientists and athletes during the Great Patriotic War

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Government of the Russian Federation – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko congratulated Russians on Victory Day and recalled the important role of Soviet teachers, lecturers, scientists and athletes during the Great Patriotic War.

“In the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and in the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland, declared by President Vladimir Putin, it is especially important to treat the memory of the exploits of our heroes with care. Soviet teachers during the war, despite all the difficulties, remained true to their high mission. They taught in the most difficult conditions, shared knowledge and warmth, and created new methods. All this testifies to the resilience of the Soviet education system and the heroism of teachers,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

He added that modern teachers also remain true to their work: they continue to pass on knowledge to students and form a strong value foundation in them. And the national project “Youth and Children” contributes to the development of the education sector.

On Victory Day, a new project about the exploits of teachers during the war is launched in Russia – “The Feat of a Teacher”, created by the Mashuk Knowledge Center together with participants of the All-Russian historical and educational program of the Victory Museum “School Museum of Victory”. Within the framework of it, everyone will be able to learn the real stories of heroic teachers who fought at the front. The project’s videos will tell about teachers who built bridges under fire, were on the battlefields near Stalingrad, repeated the feat of Alexander Matrosov, saved hundreds of pupils of an orphanage for the disabled, and ensured the crossing of children and teenagers on foot to the Soviet rear across the front line.

In addition, Dmitry Chernyshenko recalled the achievements of Soviet scientists, inventors, university professors and students during the Great Patriotic War. They created applied developments, conducted fundamental research, and trained personnel needed by the country. For example, Leningrad scientists ensured the creation and operation of the Road of Life across Lake Ladoga. The most important developments were carried out in the field of military affairs and defense, medicine. Universities and scientific organizations continued to defend candidate and doctoral dissertations, new specialties were opened and laboratories appeared to conduct priority research.

“Our President Vladimir Putin called the Victory in the Great Patriotic War a triumph of the Soviet and Russian people. The achievements of scientists and athletes also confirm these words. And the example of modern heroes of the SVO shows that even now in our country there are selfless people – true patriots,” the Deputy Prime Minister added.

Students of physical education institutes enlisted in the army in whole courses. For example, in 1941, combat units and subdivisions were formed at the Moscow Institute of Physical Education, which later heroically fought near Moscow and contributed to the salvation of the capital. Seven students and teachers of the institute were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Almost all of the students of the Leningrad Institute of Physical Education named after P.F. Lesgaft, led by the rector, stood up to defend their city, and later fought behind enemy lines and on other fronts. In 1942, this university was the only civilian university in the country to be awarded the military Order of the Red Banner.

In addition, in the first months of the war, a unique unit was created – the Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade for Special Purposes. It included more than 800 athletes, including honored masters of sports, champions and record holders of the country. Among them were track and field athletes brothers Seraphim and Georgy Znamensky, speed skater Anatoly Kapchinsky, boxer Nikolay Korolev and others.

Sport also played an important humanitarian role, reminding people that peacetime would definitely come. Since 1941, Moscow hosted the Football Championship and Cup. In 1942, Feodosiy Vanin set a world record for the 20,000 m distance at the Dynamo stadium, and over 8,000 people took part in the cross-country race in Sokolniki. The track and field relay race along the Garden Ring was held in 1942, 1943 and 1944. In 1943, Gorky hosted the USSR Track and Field Championship. In 1944, cross-country races became a symbol of the liberation of the territories.

To mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, a series of books entitled “Memory” was published by order of the Ministry of Sports and the Russian Olympic Committee – a four-volume work dedicated to the heroic contribution of Russian athletes to the Victory.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: New lights to shine on Foulston Park athletics track

    Source: City of Plymouth

Athletes of all ages and levels of fitness will be able to use the track at Devonport’s Foulston Park on dark evenings, thanks to a move to replace the floodlights as part of the transformative project.

The lights at the former Brickfields site failed this winter and the project now includes an upgrade to modern LED units to ensure the athletics track remains fit for purpose.

Foulston Park is a landmark initiative that the Council has jointly embarked on to transform an underused sports facility into some of the finest sports and wellbeing facilities in the South West.

The park’s new state-of-the-art sports, wellbeing and community hub recently opened its doors as part of the project’s ambition to transform health, fitness, youth and community facilities for Devonport and the wider city.

In 2023 the Council approved a funding commitment of £2.752 million, against a total project cost of around £21 million. Since then, the project has moved at pace, with work well under way across the site and the first phase of all-weather pitches the next in line for completion.

There has been significant capital funding from Plymouth Argyle FC and Plymouth Argyle Community Trust, as well as external grants but, as the project has progressed, there have been several unforeseen challenges leading to a re-evaluation of funding requirements.

Other new costs include upgrades to the hub to ensure it is fire compliant, an electrical supply upgrade to accommodate the requirements of a commercial kitchen, re-laying an existing artificial rugby pitch and more groundwork and drainage work than anticipated at several locations on the site.

Plymouth Argyle Community Trust and Plymouth Argyle FC, who are responsible for project delivery, have asked for an extra £900k capital support from the Council in the form of a grant.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for with responsibility for sport and leisure, said: “No one wants to spend over a set budget but, as with many construction projects, there are unexpected challenges that need to be resolved as they crop up.

“We need to think about the huge gains this health and wellbeing hub will create for the people of Devonport and beyond, helping to improve and promote ways for people to access physical activity and deliver on the city’s Active to Thrive action plan.

“These great new facilities show what collaborative working can achieve and there was a real buzz from local people at the recent launch. They open up the site and not only make residents feel welcome and supported on their journey to better health but also open the doors to more education, training and employment opportunities.”

BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) — While busloads of Russians flock to morning markets in the city of Heihe in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, a significant number of Russian travelers are heading to pristine beaches on the other side of the country in southern China’s Hainan Province after long-haul flights.

Data from local authorities in Sanya, a resort city in the island province of Hainan, shows that Russian tourists made 173,900 trips to the city in 2024, an eleven-fold increase from the previous year.

In Sanya’s Dadonghai Bay, the beaches are filled with sunbathing Russians, and even fruit vendors are calling out to potential customers in Russian.

“The warm climate, abundant sunshine and clear water, as well as the unique tropical climate and seascapes are the key reasons that attract Russian tourists,” said Chen Xiaolei, a local Russian-speaking tour guide.

In addition to the exotic coastal landscapes, Russian travelers are also attracted by Hainan’s favorable visa-free policy and fast customs clearance.

The State Immigration Administration (SIA) of the People’s Republic of China has expanded the visa-free entry regime to Hainan for citizens from 59 countries, effective February 9, 2024.

In July of the same year, the CIU introduced a visa-free regime allowing foreign tourist groups from the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions (SAR) to enter and stay in Hainan for 144 hours, and in December, the transit visa-free stay period for foreigners in Hainan was increased to 240 hours.

A tourist named Konstantin, who flew to the resort of Sanya on a direct flight from Krasnoyarsk, said: “China’s visa-free regime is incredibly practical and convenient for us. We plan to stay in Sanya for 10 days, which gives us enough time to enjoy the trip.”

The Sherikovs, a Russian couple celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary in Sanya, said: “The customs clearance process took less than 10 minutes and was much easier than we expected.”

An expanding international flight network with more direct routes from Russian cities to Sanya has also made the coastal city more accessible.

In the first quarter of 2025, there were about 500 flights between Russia and Sanya, 400 percent more than in the same period last year. According to the Fenghuang border checkpoint in Sanya, more than 5,000 Russian tourists arrive here every week.

Huang Xing, head of the Sanya Bureau of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports, said that to improve the experience of foreign tourists, local hotels and scenic spots have installed multilingual signboards in English, Russian and Chinese, facilitated international credit card payments and opened foreign currency exchange offices, and regularly hosted concerts, cultural performances and sports events.

While enjoying sunbathing, tropical fruits and vibrant nightlife, more Russian tourists are beginning to delve deeper into Chinese culture to get more unique travel experiences in Sanya, such as traditional Chinese medicine treatment, he said.

Huang Juhai, director of the specialized treatment department of the Druzhba International Sanatorium of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Sanya, said: “TCM is very popular among Russian tourists as the recognition of TCM by foreign visitors has increased significantly.”

Chen Xiaolei, a local tour guide, said more than half of his Russian clients prefer TCM treatment.

“Many of them seek TCM treatment for neck and lower back pain, joint problems, obesity and digestive disorders,” he said. -0- /Source: China Daily/

REVIEW OF FIRST QUARTER 2025 FINANCIAL RESULTS

    Revenues

Online game revenues for the first quarter of 2025 were KRW 18,806 million (US$ 12,755 thousand), representing a 5.1% decrease QoQ from KRW 19,822 million and a 4.1% increase YoY from KRW 18,065 million. The decrease QoQ was mainly attributable to decreased revenues from Ragnarok Online in Thailand. Such decrease was partially offset by increased revenue from Ragnarok Online in Japan. The increase YoY was largely due to increased revenues from Ragnarok Online in Thailand and China.

Mobile game revenues were KRW 115,486 million (US$ 78,325 thousand) for the first quarter of 2025, representing a 9.4% increase QoQ from KRW 105,586 million and a 17.2% increase YoY from KRW 98,548 million. The increase QoQ attributed to initial revenues from Ragnarok M: Classic which was launched in Southeast Asia on February 14, 2025 and Ragnarok Idle Adventure Plus launched in Global except Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Korea and Japan on February 20, 2025. Such increase was partially offset by decreased revenues from Ragnarok Origin in Southeast Asia and THE RAGNAROK in Southeast Asia. The increase YoY was due to initial revenue from Ragnarok M: Classic in Southeast Asia, THE RAGNAROK in Southeast Asia launched on October 31, 2024 and Ragnarok: Rebirth in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau launched on October 31, 2024. This increase was partially offset by decreased revenues from Ragnarok Origin in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau and North, Central and South America.

Other revenues were KRW 3,172 million (US$ 2,151 thousand) for the first quarter of 2025, representing a 26.5% decrease QoQ from KRW 4,315 million and a 0.2% increase YoY from KRW 3,166 million.

    Cost of Revenue

Cost of revenue was KRW 87,458 million (US$ 59,316 thousand) for the first quarter of 2025, representing a 8% increase QoQ from KRW 81,008 million and a 18.8% increase YoY from KRW 73,628 million. The increase QoQ was mainly due to increased commission paid for mobile game services related to Ragnarok M: Classic in Southeast Asia. The increase YoY was primarily due to increased commission paid for mobile game services related to Ragnarok M: Classic in Southeast Asia, THE RAGNAROK in Southeast Asia and Ragnarok: Rebirth in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

    Operating Expenses

Operating expenses were KRW 25,276 million (US$ 17,143 thousand) for the first quarter of 2025, representing a 22.9% decrease QoQ from KRW 32,765 million and a 31.1% increase YoY from KRW 19,282 million. The decrease QoQ was mainly due to decreased advertising expenses for THE RAGNAROK in Southeast Asia and salaries. The increase YoY was mainly due to increased advertising expenses for Ragnarok Idle Adventure Plus in Global, Ragnarok V: Returns in Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines and Ragnarok Begins in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

    Profit Before Income Tax Expenses

Profit before income tax expenses was KRW 28,450 million (US$ 19,295 thousand) for the first quarter of 2025 compared with profit before income tax expense of KRW 25,377 million for the fourth quarter of 2024 and profit before income tax expenses of KRW 32,498 million for the first quarter of 2024.

  • MIL-OSI: Bitget Announces Strategic Partnership with SWEAT to Boost Movement Economy in Web3

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, May 09, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bitget, the leading cryptocurrency exchange and Web3 company, has announced its strategic partnership with SWEAT, the pioneering movement economy ecosystem, lowering entry barriers for Web2 audiences while seamlessly connecting them to Web3. The alliance was unveiled at Dubai Esports Festival 2025 (DEF), where attendees experienced the future first-hand through interactive activities that turn physical activity into crypto rewards.

From Dubai Airport to Sheikh Zayed Road, the city’s most prominent billboards now carry a powerful message: Walk into Crypto—Step. Sweat. Score. “We’re turning physical activity into financial empowerment,” declared SWEAT Co-founder and CEO Oleg Fomenko. “This is about rewarding the most natural human behavior, movement, with digital ownership.”

Bitget COO Vugar Usi Zade added, “Our mission has always been to bridge Web2 and Web3, and what better way than through something as universal as movement? This partnership makes crypto accessible in the most human way possible—through the natural movement we do every day,” he added.

The collaboration debuts cutting-edge innovations, including SWEAT’s AI movement coach, Mia, and expanded multi-chain wallet capabilities. At the same time, for Bitget, this partnership represents another strategic step in its vision to seamlessly connect traditional and decentralized digital economies. “We’re building bridges, not walls,” emphasized Vugar. “By meeting users where they already are, in this case, through their daily movement, we’re creating the most natural on-ramps to Web3. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or crypto curious, this partnership makes the transition effortless and rewarding.”

This isn’t just another industry collaboration—it’s a fitness-meets-finance movement that redefines how people interact with digital assets. SWEAT and Bitget are writing the next chapter of mainstream crypto adoption by transforming routine activity into financial opportunity. As Dubai’s skyline lights up with SWEAT x Bitget billboards, one thing’s clear: The future of Web3 isn’t just about sitting and staring at charts. Sometimes, you’ve gotta move it to prove it.

  • MIL-OSI: Toobit in Dubai: Championing Crypto Culture as CFN Official Sponsor

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands, May 09, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In a city known for its innovation and world-class events, Toobit‘s sponsorship of Crypto Fight Night (CFN) Dubai 2025 on 1 May this year showcased the exciting connection between blockchain, entertainment, and community building.

Held in conjunction with TOKEN2049, CFN Dubai 2025 combined sports and blockchain, attracting a global audience during one of the busiest weeks in the crypto calendar.

Not unlike TOKEN2049, the event also provided a powerful platform for athletes, creators, and crypto leaders to unite—reflecting the qualities of resilience, precision, and performance that align with Toobit’s vision for the digital asset space.

    Crypto Culture Comes Alive

Alongside co-sponsors memecoin BONK, stablecoin Solstice, and blockchain venture Ghaf Studios, the award-winning exchange’s presence at CFN Dubai 2025 is perhaps also representative of where and how crypto subculture is headed. No longer confined to sterile conference halls or technical panels, blockchain is finding expression in arenas, festivals, and entertainment venues.

A large part of that is due to crypto’s inherent demographic. Mostly young, digitally native, and culturally fluent, this generation is building their identities around the assets they’re investing in. They want to see their values reflected in the events that merge tech, lifestyle, and high-energy storytelling. And CFN Dubai 2025 delivered exactly that.

It was also an opportunity to engage directly with users, creators, and builders in one of the world’s most energized digital hubs. By supporting the event and introducing crypto to the wider sports demographic, the cryptoasset platform was able to enhance the visibility of blockchain applications, reaching over 20,000 concurrent viewers across the official livestream and separate watch parties hosted by the sponsors.

    The Highlight

A highlight of CFN Dubai 2025 was the match between Brian Rose, “The OG”, and Modrick Buck, “The Warrior”.

Brian, 53, is an American-born British podcaster based in London. He is a digital finance advocate and even ran for Mayor of London. Brian hosts London Real, a podcast and former YouTube channel he started in 2011. He made his debut entrance into pro boxing during the match.

29-year-old Modrick Buck, a young musician and boxer, faced Brian in the ring. In the blue corner, he was eager to add another win to his professional record.

“The Warrior” was not able to get the first round knockout that he predicted, with “The OG” holding strong till the end of the match.

After three intense rounds, Modrick Buck claimed a tight victory with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 28-29 from the three judges.

    Built on Partnerships

Despite having no operations nor office in Dubai, Toobit’s attendance at TOKEN2049 and CFN Dubai this year was one stop on a broader journey across the globe.

Earlier, the digital asset exchange sponsored Web3 Amsterdam, an annual event that brings together Web3 enthusiasts, innovators, and industry leaders to explore the latest trends and foster collaboration in the Netherlands.

Toobit is set to grace the picturesque city again later this month as a platinum sponsor of Dutch Blockchain Week 2025, continuing its expanding presence in one of Europe’s most innovative blockchain hubs.

The exchange has also recently been named Best Crypto Exchange MENA 2025 at the World Business Outlook Awards.

With a newly acquired Polish license issued by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF), Toobit’s regulatory path continues to evolve alongside their global user base, empowering users and communities with real tools, transparent systems, and meaningful participation.

    What’s Next for Toobit?

Global expansion continues to be on the cards for Toobit, who has prioritized building its foundations over the promises of hype often found in crypto.

The exchange uses a transparent system, with a publicly verified proof-of-reserves that is independently checked by third-party firms. These include blockchain security experts like Hacken, Beosin, and Elliptic, who conduct regular security assessments.

CFN Dubai 2025 brought this vision to life. From the fighters in the ring to the fans in the stands, the event displayed the same resilience and strategy that define successful traders and teams in the Web3 space.

Toobit is not just building technology. True to its motto of giving “A Bit More Than Crypto”, it’s shaping the communities behind it as a fast-growing global crypto exchange.

As crypto enters a new era of global adoption, Toobit remains focused on providing a secure, seamless, and user-friendly trading experience.

Disclaimer: Toobit does not currently offer any virtual asset services in the UAE and is not licensed by the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). Toobit will only provide such services, if any, in Dubai after receiving required licenses from VARA.

  • MIL-OSI China: Sports events fuel tourism consumption in China

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

When Jiang Xiaojuan and her husband boarded a plane for a journey of around 3,500 kilometers, they were not just headed on holiday; they were pursuing a shared passion: badminton.

The couple from Urumqi, northwest China’s Xinjiang region, flew to the coastal city of Xiamen, east China’s Fujian Province, to catch the 2025 Sudirman Cup, held during China’s bustling May Day “golden week” holiday.

The couple instinctively knew that spectating would not be enough, which is why they had packed their rackets into their suitcases.

Wang Zhiyi of China competes in the women’s singles match against An Se Young of South Korea during the final match between China and South Korea at BWF Sudirman Cup in Xiamen, southeast China’s Fujian Province, May 4, 2025. (Xinhua/Sun Fei)

“Xiamen has plenty of badminton courts and a vibrant local scene,” Jiang told Xinhua outside the stadium, shortly after cheering for China’s win in the final. “As soon as we landed, we joined a local group and played three matches.”

For Jiang, blending sports with travel was the perfect getaway: “It’s good for both body and mind,” she said with a grin.

A new trend of sports-driven tourism is emerging in China as more travelers are building their itineraries around tournaments, marathons and championship games. Cities are seizing the opportunity, leveraging major events to boost hotel bookings, catering consumption and cultural exploration.

The government is backing this trend. National action plans released in March and April highlighted the integration of sports, culture, and tourism as a strategic pillar for stimulating domestic consumption, calling for more high-quality sports programs and distinctive events.

Xiamen’s hosting of this year’s Sudirman Cup was a prime example. Running from April 27 to May 4, the tournament coincided with the country’s five-day May Day holiday, attracting crowds of badminton fans alongside regular holiday tourists.

Local businesses saw a noticeable boost, with hotels across the city reporting higher bookings than the previous year. Shen Xiaoyan of Le Meridien Xiamen said the hotel hosted several groups in town for the competition. To attract more guests, the hotel offered bundled packages with perks like complimentary shuttle service to the arena and free court time.

The city didn’t rely solely on the matches. “We rolled out ‘sports-plus’ packages to enrich the visitor experience,” said Chen Lan, deputy head of Xiamen’s sports bureau. Initiatives like “Walk with the Champions” city tours and campus visits by athletes added layers of experience beyond stadiums.

More people are prioritizing health and leisure amid rising living standards, said Li Peigong, president of Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance. “A combination of sports and travel has become a go-to solution that caters to a wide range of needs.”

This shift aligns with China’s broader development strategy to become a leading sporting nation by advancing competitive sports, encouraging mass participation, and developing its sports industry — all in parallel.

With annual growth surpassing 10 percent over the past years, the sports industry has emerged as a key driver of consumption, innovation, and employment in the country.

In 2024 alone, Xiamen hosted 40 high-level sports events, generating more than 2.6 billion yuan (about 361 million U.S. dollars) in revenues.

Meanwhile, Shanghai is setting the pace for sports-driven consumption. In March, the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix drew a record-breaking 220,000 spectators, exceeding last year’s attendance. Of those, 15 percent were overseas visitors, with 60 percent traveling to Shanghai specifically for the race, doubling the number from the previous year.

But the excitement didn’t stop at the racetrack. F1 fans flowed into Shanghai’s buzzing neighborhoods, dining at upscale restaurants, shopping in luxury boutiques, and browsing duty-free stores.

“Ticket sales rose by 30 percent compared to 2023,” said Yang Yibin, chairman of Shanghai Juss Sports Development Group. “This isn’t just a race — it’s an invitation to discover China.”

In 2024, Shanghai hosted 178 major sporting events, raking in 11.38 billion yuan. When including related spending on tourism, dining, and shopping, the total soared to nearly 31 billion yuan.

Experts argue that sports tourism is helping lesser-known destinations stay competitive in an increasingly crowded travel market. This ensures steady visitor flow while offering fresh, engaging experiences, said Zou Xinxian, a professor at Beijing Sport University.

“Sports help activate destination brands and build unique, recognizable identities,” Zou said. Sports events like marathons enable cities to showcase their local culture in dynamic, participatory ways.

Over the May Day holiday, sports events were seamlessly woven into local culture to attract visitors.

In Jilin, a 10-kilometer warm-up marathon took place alongside a traditional kite festival at the scenic Chagan Lake, with runners passing through villages rich in ethnic character. Meanwhile, in Yunnan, a large-scale sports carnival featuring a variety of competitions drew athletes and tourists alike to its stunning natural landscapes.

Li Peiyao, a researcher at Jilin University, sees a broader shift in consumer behavior: from buying things to seeking meaningful experiences.

“Sporting events don’t just bring people together,” said Li. “They help foster connection, cultural identity, and shared memories.”

Why No-KYC Casinos Like JACKBIT Are Revolutionizing Online Gambling: A Game-Changer Among the Best Crypto Casinos

No-KYC casinos are changing the way we think about online gambling, and JACKBIT is at the forefront of this movement. Traditional casinos often require players to submit sensitive documents like passports or utility bills for verification, which can be off-putting for those who value their privacy or face delays. JACKBIT’s no-KYC model turns this process on its head:

    Breaking Down Barriers

By eliminating the KYC process, JACKBIT makes it incredibly easy to get started. Players only need to register with an email and can start playing immediately—no waiting for account approval. This is a major advantage for players tired of waiting days for traditional casinos to process their verification.

    Privacy as a Priority

In today’s world, data breaches are a serious concern. JACKBIT prioritizes player privacy by ensuring that personal information stays off the grid. This approach is especially appealing to privacy-conscious users and those in regions with strict gambling laws, making it one of the best crypto casinos for secure, anonymous play.

    Real-World Impact

Imagine a player in a country where online gambling is restricted—they can still join JACKBIT anonymously using cryptocurrency. This ability to bypass local regulations opens up online gambling to a much wider audience, making JACKBIT one of the most accessible new crypto casinos on the market.

The “Tan Dun WE-Festival”, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), will feature two performances of “Xiangxi Tujia Women’s Daliuzi & Hong Kong Women’s Percussion Ensemble” concert in June as part of the pre-festival events of this year’s Chinese Culture Festival (CCF). Under the artistic direction and baton of Tan Dun, Hong Kong’s Ambassador for Cultural Promotion (ACP) and internationally renowned composer and conductor, two all-female percussion ensembles will take the Hong Kong stage to present both the “Daliuzi”, a traditional percussion music of western Hunan’s Tujia ethnic group, and contemporary percussion music. The concert will also feature the world premiere of two tea-inspired compositions written by Tan, showcasing how percussion music transcends time and bonds the East and the West, while telling the good story of China’s intangible cultural heritage in the new era. The programme is also one of the performing arts programmes of the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Month 2025.

Tujia “Daliuzi”, primarily featuring gongs and cymbals, is a kind of ensemble of traditional folk musical instruments of ethnic Tujia people from western Hunan. It was inscribed onto the first national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2006. Enlightened by an impressionable field trip in western Hunan, Tan blends the “Daliuzi” with tea-making techniques such as leaf-whistling, tea-picking and grinding to create a new composition “TEA-liuzi · Mystical Xiangxi”, and has invited the Xiangxi Tujia Women’s Daliuzi to come to Hong Kong for the world premiere of this work. The ensemble will also perform several folk pieces, which include “The Hen Lays Eggs”, “Pheasant Leaving the Mountain”, “Pigeons Taking a Bath” and “Ducks Flirting with Water”, demonstrating the exceptional skills and expressive character of the unique musical artistry of the Tujia people.

The newly established Hong Kong Women’s Percussion Ensemble, spearheaded by Tan, will make its debut at this concert. The ensemble comprises four outstanding local young female percussionists, namely Karen Yu, Elise Liu, Eugene Kwong and Emma Ng. They will perform another world premiere of “Tea Music: Water, Wind, Ceramic” by Tan, as well as “Credo in Us” by contemporary avant-garde, experimental composer John Cage. Tan has also composed a new “Concerto for Piano and Four Percussionists” for this ensemble that will perform alongside pianist Liu Muyu, showcasing the varying rhythms and rich sonorities of percussion music.

Tan is an internationally renowned Chinese composer, musician and conductor, and was appointed by the UNESCO as a Goodwill Ambassador in 2013. He has made an indelible mark on the world’s music scene, which earned him many prestigious honours, including the Grammy Awards, the Academy Awards and the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. Tan has led some of the world’s most esteemed orchestras, and composed more than 100 musical works over the years. His famous works include the film scores of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, “Hero” as well as the award ceremony music for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. He has been awarded the title of Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in December 2024, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to global culture and the arts. Tan has been appointed as Hong Kong’s first ACP by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau since January 1, 2023.

Chinese Culture Festival 2025: “Tan Dun WE-Festival”: “Xiangxi Tujia Women’s Daliuzi & Hong Kong Women’s Percussion Ensemble” concert will be staged at 8pm on June 4 and 5 (Wednesday and Thursday) at the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The above-mentioned programme also offers a pre-concert symposium (in Putonghua), entitled “A Dialogue between Xiangxi Tujia Women’s Daliuzi & Hong Kong Women’s Percussion Ensemble”, to be held at 7pm on June 5 at the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, during which Tan will engage in a discussion with members of the Xiangxi Tujia Women’s Daliuzi and the Hong Kong Women’s Percussion Ensemble. Interested audience members can attend the pre-concert symposium by presenting the tickets of “Xiangxi Tujia Women’s Daliuzi & Hong Kong Women’s Percussion Ensemble” concert. Admission is free. First held in 2023, the “Tan Dun WE-Festival” features musicians, dancers and ensembles from the Mainland, Hong Kong and around the world that reveals fresh new approaches to music, dance and visual arts, turning the city into an international stage for cultural and arts exchanges. The Festival also attracts people from both East and West to gather in the city, showcasing the essence of Hong Kong’s East-meets-West cultural DNA. The Festival returns this year with the theme of tea culture. Apart from the above-mentioned programme, it also includes Tan Dun | “Tea: A Mirror of Soul” on May 30 and 31, and “Lost Tang Dynasty Music and Dance Manuscripts: ‘The Vanishing Mogao Caves’” on June 7.

The CCF, presented by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and organised by the Chinese Culture Promotion Office under the LCSD, aims to promote Chinese culture and enhance the public’s national identity and cultural confidence. It also aims to attract top-notch artists and arts groups from both the Mainland and other parts of the world for exchanges in Chinese arts and culture. The CCF 2025 will be held from June to September. Through different performing arts programmes in various forms and related extension activities, including selected programmes of the Chinese Opera Festival, “Tan Dun WE-Festival”, film screenings, exhibitions, as well as community and school activities and more, the festival provides members of the public and visitors with more opportunities to enjoy distinctive programmes that showcase fine traditional Chinese culture, thereby facilitating patriotic education and contributing to the inheritance, transformation and development of traditional Chinese culture in Hong Kong. The all-abilities playground at Riverlinks Park in Clarkson is built for every young adventurer, with a range of play spaces and equipment that integrates learning with play.

The one-of-a-kind playground includes five themed play areas with equipment that caters to users with diverse physical, sensory and cognitive needs.

The fully enclosed playground also has a secure play area for enhanced safety and quiet zones for rest and relief.

It also features the City’s first communication board, created in collaboration with All Abilities Australia to support non-verbal users.

Wanneroo Deputy Mayor James Rowe said it was fantastic to deliver an accessible and inclusive play space for visitors from our community and beyond to enjoy.

“This facility is more than a play space; it is a place where children can feel a sense of belonging and safety,” he said.

“We are grateful to have received a funding contribution of $2.6 million from the WA Government, administered through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

“This shared investment reflects our joint commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our community and ensuring everyone can enjoy the City of Wanneroo.”

Minister for Transport, Sport and Recreation, the Hon Rita Saffioti MLA, said supporting projects like this demonstrated the WA Government’s dedication to creating more purpose-built, inclusive places and spaces that children and families can access to stay active and healthy.

“Using feedback from the local community, the result is an asset accessible to all children, including those with mobility issues and those with cognitive, sensory or social-emotional challenges,” she said.

“Exploring and enjoying interesting outdoor spaces is an important part of childhood and I congratulate the City of Wanneroo for their commitment to this project.”

Construction of a Universal Access Toilet was finished this month, marking completion of this important project.

  • MIL-OSI China: Tottenham to face Man Utd in all-English Europa League final

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

There will be an all-English final in the UEFA Europa League on May 21 after Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both won their respective semifinals on Thursday.

Three late goals gave Manchester United a 4-1 win at home to Athletic Bilbao, who had the home side on the ropes for a long time despite missing players such as Nico and Inaki Williams and Oihan Sancet. United won 7-1 on aggregate after having triumphed 3-0 in last week’s first leg in Bilbao.

Mikel Jauregizar gave the Basque side hope in the 31st minute when he curled in an excellent shot from outside the area to reward his team’s control in the first half, in which United looked to sit deep and play on the break.

Athletic was the better side for the first 25 minutes of the second half, but failed to create enough chances in the absence of key strikers, and when Mason Mount made it 1-1 in the 72nd minute, the tie was all but over.

Casemiro flicked in a free kick in the 80th minute, with Rasmus Hojlund making it 3-1 five minutes from time and Mount scoring his second from distance with goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala off his line.

Elsewhere, Tottenham won 2-0 away to Bodo/Glimt for a 5-1 aggregate win.

Dominic Solanke opened the scoring in the 63rd minute from a corner, and Pedro Porro’s long range effort six minutes later made Spurs’ final place secure.

In the Conference League, Chelsea will face Real Betis in the final, with Chelsea winning 5-1 on aggregate and Betis scraping through 4-3 after extra time against Fiorentina.

Chelsea had few problems in ensuring its place in the final after last week’s 4-1 win away to Swedish side Djurgarden.

The result was never in doubt, with Chelsea extending its lead in the 38th minute when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored the game’s only goal.

Betis traveled to Florence defending a 2-1 first leg win at home to Fiorentina, and in an exciting first half, Antony gave the Spanish side a two-goal cushion on aggregate with a stunning free kick that went in off the post in the 30th minute.

However, the Italian side hit back with Robin Gosens scoring two headers from corners on 34 and 42 minutes.

With no goals in the second half, the tie went into extra time where Ez Abde’s far-post finish made it 2-2 on the night and 4-3 to Betis on aggregate.

Among the venues are 118 dedicated to winter sports, with the region’s favorable natural conditions increasingly attracting young people to participate in winter activities in recent years.

In January, Xinjiang hosted its regional Winter Games for the second consecutive year, drawing participation from 1,058 athletes of various ethnic groups.

“We will continue to invest in building sports facilities and create fitness spaces within reach of every household,” said Aert, director of the Xinjiang Sports Bureau. “We are also focusing on key areas such as winter sports and outdoor activities to help drive Xinjiang’s economic development.”
