    Optical Power & Precision

    • 10x Magnification Power
Starscope allows you to zoom in on distant objects with crystal-clear detail — up to 10 times closer. Whether it’s a mountaintop or a distant stadium seat, the detail remains sharp and focused.
    • 42mm Objective Lens Diameter
The large 42mm lens collects more light for brighter images, especially in low-light settings like early morning or dusk. It enhances your visual experience when birdwatching or stargazing.
    • Field of View
Starscope offers a wide field of view, making it easier to scan landscapes or follow moving targets without frequent repositioning.

    Advanced Lens & Prism Technology

    • BAK-4 Prism
Built with professional-grade BAK-4 (Barium Crown Glass) prisms, which provide greater light transmission and edge-to-edge sharpness — reducing distortion and glare.
    • Multi-Coated Lens
Each lens surface is coated to enhance image brightness, reduce reflections, and improve contrast. This ensures a vibrant, high-resolution image even in bright sunlight.

The exterior shell is made from a durable polymer composite that absorbs impact, making the device drop-resistant and travel-friendly.
    • Slip-Resistant Grip
Ergonomic texture provides a firm hold, even in wet conditions or while wearing gloves.

    Smartphone Compatibility

    • Universal Phone Adapter
Easily attaches to most smartphones to transform the Starscope into a powerful telephoto lens. Capture distant landscapes, record HD video, or take zoomed-in wildlife shots without blur.
    • Tripod Mount Ready
A standard mount allows you to attach it to a tripod for long sessions or time-lapse recordings.

How Does the Starscope Telescope Work?

Starscope uses high-powered optics to deliver a detailed image of faraway scenes. It works by channeling light through precision-engineered lenses and a BAK-4 prism system, which enhances brightness, sharpness, and contrast.

When light enters the objective lens, it travels through a series of internal glass prisms and coatings that reduce glare and distortion. The result is a magnified, high-definition view that looks vibrant and realistic, even at long distances.

The monocular’s alignment with your smartphone camera adds further functionality — turning your phone into a zoom lens for pictures and video.

    • If using with a smartphone, ensure the adapter is properly aligned.

Problem: Smartphone Adapter Doesn’t Fit Properly

    Fix:

    • Clean both lenses with a microfiber cloth.
    • Make sure the monocular isn’t fogged up (especially when moving between temperature zones).

  • MIL-OSI USA: Jayapal, Randall, Dexter Conduct Unannounced Oversight Visit at Northwest Detention Center

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (7th District of Washington)

TACOMA, WA — Today, Congresswomen Emily Randall (WA-06), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), and Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) conducted an unannounced Congressional oversight visit at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC).

Officials at the detention center allowed the Members to tour the facility one hour after they arrived. Despite repeated attempts, the Members were only permitted to meet with two detained individuals, which raises concerns over the medical care and legal counsel available in this detention center.

This visit follows a troubling pattern: recent ICE raids targeting labor leaders, multiple reports over the past few years citing poor compliance with medical and sanitary standards at the facility, and actions by the Trump Administration that undermine Congressional oversight authority.

Following the visit, the Members and Roxana Norouzi, Executive Director of OneAmerica, addressed members of the press to share their experience.

“Today was a stark reminder of the pain, chaos, and confusion caused at the hands of Donald Trump — and what happens when policy is developed from a source of hate, instead of fact,” said Congresswoman Randall, a member of the House Oversight Committee. “The American people are being told one thing, but my eyes saw another: the people inside this facility are our neighbors, people who we would see in the community, parents, and siblings. We spoke with a legal permanent resident who is being detained on a 20 year old crime for which he served his time. This is an injustice, it’s unconstitutional, and it’s being funded on the backs of taxpayers. We must continue to show up — unannounced — and demand answers.”

“Today I visited the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma for an unannounced inspection. While I am disappointed that the facility staff would not allow me to speak with more detained individuals, I was able to speak with two detained persons,” said Congresswoman Jayapal, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration, Integrity, Security, and Enforcement. “One woman has been in this country for 20 years and was detained less than a week before she was to be married to a U.S. citizen. Another man has been here 31 years as a legal permanent resident, is a proud member of the Machinists Union, and is married to a U.S. citizen with three U.S. citizen children. These individuals could not understand why they were in detention, why this country they live is treating them this way, and they fear terribly for their families. I remain incredibly concerned about the entire immigration detention system, which is supposed to be a civil system but is instead functioning as a massive for-profit prison that utilizes billions of taxpayer dollars to jail people who should not be there. It is being weaponized by the Trump administration to carry out mass disappearances and deportations of people of all statuses like the lawful permanent residents held in this facility and undocumented immigrants who are married to US citizens — many of whom are not ‘the worst of the worst’ like Trump said he would go after, but instead are people who were contributing members of our community. I will continue to conduct this oversight and work to build a humane and fair immigration system that benefits Americans while protecting the rights of all  immigrants.”

“Donald Trump is lying to the American people. He is dehumanizing immigrants who came here for a better life—only to face cruelty and injustice—funded by your tax dollars. Inside the Northwest Detention Center, we were not allowed to speak with or see most individuals detained here, and that should concern every one of us. What are they hiding?” said Congresswoman Dexter (OR-03), a critical care and lung physician. “Trump is detaining our neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones without guaranteed due process and no accountability. That’s not American; that’s authoritarianism.”

“No matter where we come from, the color of our skin, or our immigration status we all deserve to live in a country where our families are together, where we feel safe, and where our rights are upheld. Unfortunately, we are witnessing attacks on immigrants and working people across the country that are violating these core values,” said Roxana Norouzi, Executive Director of OneAmerica. “This Administration has pushed the limits of their executive power, snatching, and disappearing our neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones – detaining them in centers like this one. At times, with no due process and no accountability. We want to ensure our community members who are detained are treated humanely. They need access to legal counsel and, at a minimum, to understand the immigration process while detained. Our legal system requires fairness and respect for due process, with increased transparency and accountability of for-profit detention centers like this one.”

  • MIL-OSI Economics: RBI: Stability, Trust, Growth –

    Source: Reserve Bank of India

A strong and resilient financial system is the bedrock on which the edifice of economic prosperity of a nation is built. Reserve Bank of India is the custodian of our financial system. It completed 90 years of its journey yesterday. The theme for our 90th year was ‘Stability, Trust and Growth’.

It embodies all that RBI stands for. It is apt we introspect on the past and how we can better discharge our mandate of ensuring monetary and financial stability; enhancing trust in the financial system; and supporting economic growth and improving the well-being of our people.

    Price stability

Stability refers to stability of prices. This is important as inflation erodes the value of money. It hurts people; it hurts the poor even more. However, not all inflation is bad. Experts believe that a moderate level of inflation is healthy for economic growth. If inflation is too low, the economy faces stagnation risks. If it is too high, prices become unpredictable, making it difficult for consumers and businesses to plan and invest. We have chosen a target of 4% with a band of 2% for CPI inflation.

CPI inflation has mostly stayed aligned with the target. The flexible inflation targeting is due for review. We will collaborate with govt to not only improve the framework but also to obtain, through appropriate monetary and fiscal policies, ‘Goldilocks conditions’ for inflation and growth.

    Financial stability

Stability also refers to financial stability, which complements price stability in meeting growth and other developmental objectives. We have had a stable financial system – a system that has smoothly supported real sector economic activities even during periods of stress. Financial institutions have performed well. Banks and NBFCs are stronger and well capitalised to carry out financial intermediation effectively.

    External stability

Stability includes stable foreign exchange rates, important for not only importers, exporters and investors but also the general public. India’s forex market has the required depth and liquidity to weather pressures, such as those seen in the last few months.

Healthy levels of forex reserves and a manageable current account balance are also reassuring. Reserve Bank shall continue to be supportive, to manage excessive volatility without targeting any particular level or band of exchange rate.

    Trust

Trust is important for multiple reasons to a central bank. Currency will serve its purpose only if the public trusts it to be safe to use. The public relies on trust when they deposit their hard-earned money in banks. Monetary policy requires trust to keep inflation expectations anchored. Trust is important for financial stability. It is integral to the integrity of financial markets and payments and settlement systems. We’ll continue to strengthen the trust the public has reposed in us. Ensuring quality customer service and experience is vital to retaining people’s trust. We’ll partner with financial institutions to improve services and reduce grievances.

Independence of a central bank is important to generate trust. However, independence demands transparency. Independence doesn’t preclude consultation, whether with the general public, regulated entities, other financial regulators or govt. In fact, it becomes even more imperative. Independence also requires higher accountability. We have been deeply conscious of this and will endeavour to further improve transparency, enhance consultation, coordination and collaboration and raise accountability through various measures.

    Growth

PM has envisioned a Viksit Bharat by 2047. This entails inclusive and accelerated economic growth. Policymaking has to be both pragmatic and visionary for India’s growth to leapfrog. RBI has a track record of introducing innovative policy measures while ensuring stability. Its response to the pandemic is a case in point.

We’ll continue to be proactive, agile and flexible in our attempt to support economic growth. While we have come a long way in improving financial inclusion, we’ll work with financial institutions to expand access, especially to the bottom of the pyramid. We’ll encourage banks and NBFCs to leverage data and advanced tech to enhance their capacity for lending. This has the potential to accelerate supply of credit in the economy, without compromising on financial stability, to drive investment and economic growth.

Moreover, as we grow and further integrate into the global economy in our journey of becoming a developed economy, our payment systems and currency have to be widely recognized worldwide. We’ve already taken some steps in this regard. We’ll continue to take initiatives to internationalise the rupee and globalise India’s payment systems.

    Tech

Rapid advances in tech have facilitated RBI to fulfil its mandate of stability, trust and growth. Digitalisation of various banking services, UPI, and Account Aggregator are a few examples in this regard. It is imperative we harness tech and support innovation to further deepen and widen financial inclusion; improve monetary policy, banking, and currency management including central bank digital currency; universalise payment systems; expand credit including through Unified Lending Interface; and enhance customer experience.

On this occasion, I would like to reassure all that we’ll continue to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and uphold the values of public service – integrity, impartiality, industriousness, objectivity, accountability, decisiveness, and transparency. We shall continue to foster a safe, secure and stable financial system to meet the aspirations of our country and its citizens. The aspirational goals Reserve Bank has set for itself to become a leading central bank are undeniably demanding, yet rewarding and inevitable.

As Mahatma Gandhi had said, “The future depends on what we do in the present.” RBI rededicates itself in the service of the nation.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Shared Vision, Shared Responsibility – Strengthening NBFCs – Speech by Shri Swaminathan J, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India – March 28, 2025 – at the Conference of Non-Banking Financial Companies held at Chennai

    Source: Reserve Bank of India

CA Shri Charanjot Singh Nanda, President, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India; Chairpersons of the Audit Committee of the Boards, MDs & CEOs of NBFCs, and Statutory Auditors of NBFCs, Executive Directors from RBI and my colleagues from the Reserve Bank of India, Ladies and Gentlemen. A very good morning to all of you.

    1. It is an honour to address this esteemed gathering representing the key pillars of the NBFC ecosystem —CEOs entrusted with driving business responsibly, Chairpersons of Audit Committees overseeing assurance, Statutory Auditors who ensure transparency and integrity, along with regulators and supervisors committed to maintaining financial stability and fostering a sound regulatory environment. The theme of our engagement today — “Shared Vision, Shared Responsibility – Strengthening the NBFCs” — could not be more timely or relevant.

    2. The evolution of the NBFC sector is indeed a story of entrepreneurial energy, innovation and social impact. However, as the sector grows in scale and systemic importance, so too must our efforts to reinforce its foundations. A resilient, customer-centric, and well-governed NBFC sector is a shared aspiration — and delivering on it our shared responsibility.

    3. NBFCs have emerged as powerful engines of credit. By complementing the traditional banking system, they have significantly expanded access to credit, particularly for segments that have historically been underserved or excluded. Through innovative credit delivery models that harness technology and local insights, NBFCs have been able to design customised financial products tailored to diverse borrower needs. Their agility and close connect with customers have enabled them to play a role that is not only complementary to the role traditionally played by banks but, in many instances, catalytic in building a financial ecosystem characterised by deeper intermediation and wider opportunity.

    4. The importance of NBFCs has only grown with time. In fact, over the past decade, their growth has consistently outpaced that of banks — a trend that has become even more pronounced in the last few years. This rapid growth is a testament to the sector’s relevance and resilience — but it also raises the stakes. As NBFCs become more systemically important, the standards of governance, risk management, and customer treatment must rise accordingly.

Understanding the Risks- Need for Responsible Innovation

    5. The business model of NBFCs — while effective — comes with its own set of structural risks. Their funding is short-term as compared to the maturity of their lending or is directed towards higher-risk customer segments.

    6. This maturity and credit transformation is at the heart of the NBFC model — but it also demands a heightened focus on risk management. If not carefully managed, it can create vulnerabilities, especially during periods of market stress or liquidity shocks.

    7. Risk-taking must be intelligent and well planned, and never beyond the risk absorption capacity of the entity concerned. Liquidity and credit risks must be rigorously assessed and managed. Asset-liability mismatches, nature and tenor of the funding sources, and concentration risks all need board-level oversight which should be ably supported by robust internal controls.

Growth with Fairness: Customer-Centricity is Non-Negotiable

    8. Most importantly, even as we pursue scale, speed, and profits, we must not lose sight of fairness to the customer — that is the cornerstone of a sustainable business model. The NBFC sector must live up to its promise of inclusion by treating customers with dignity, transparency, and care. This entails ensuring transparent and easy-to-understand pricing, free from hidden charges or usurious interest rates. In instances of default, recovery practices must be conducted in an empathetic and respectful manner.

    9. Unfortunately, some NBFCs think they can pursue a business model where it is par for the course to resort to weak underwriting in pursuit of quick growth, coupled with excessive and unsustainable interest rates — at times masked as upfront charges or processing fees — which is followed by aggressive recovery practices upon default. Let me state unequivocally: this is not an acceptable model. Financial inclusion cannot be used as a pretext for financial exploitation. I urge each one of you to commit your institutions to upholding fairness in all your dealings.

    10. This responsibility for fair conduct is shared commitment by the CEO, the Board, and assurance functions in any entity. A customer-centric culture must be driven from the top and embedded at all levels.

    11. How do we ensure that our shared vision is realised, and our collective responsibilities are fulfilled? One of the most effective ways is by strengthening both internal and external assurance mechanisms.

Strengthening Oversight: the Role of Audit Committee

    12. Let me begin with the Audit Committee of the Board (ACB). Far from being a routine compliance requirement, the ACB is the lynchpin of institutional oversight and long-term financial health. It plays a critical role in reinforcing governance, guiding management on assurance, and ensuring the integrity of internal control systems. When functioning effectively, it becomes a proactive forum for identifying vulnerabilities and initiating timely corrective actions.

    13. The role of the Audit Committee Chairperson is particularly significant in setting the tone for effective governance. It is essential that committee meetings are held regularly, conducted with clear purpose, and thoroughly documented to ensure accountability and follow-through.

    14. The effectiveness of the Committee is in the substance of its deliberations. The ACB must actively monitor the adequacy and functioning of internal control systems — not merely to confirm their presence, but to ensure they are operating effectively in practice. Similarly, audit observations should not remain confined to meeting minutes; they must translate into timely and meaningful corrective actions. A strong ACB also tracks audit findings and ensures that corrective measures are implemented without delay.

    15. Equally important is the establishment of an effective whistleblower mechanism overseen by the Board or the ACB which empowers employees and grants them anonymity, to report unethical or non-compliant behaviour, without fear of reprisal.

    16. CEOs too have a crucial role in upholding the integrity of financial reporting. They must actively deter any attempts—whether deliberate or cleverly disguised—to misapply accounting standards or regulatory provisions. It is equally important to foster an environment where the Chief Financial Officer and Head of Internal Audit feel empowered to engage in open, honest, and transparent dialogue with the Audit Committee of the Board.

The Crucial Role of Statutory Auditors

    17. Now let me come to the role of Statutory Auditors, who are an indispensable part of the assurance ecosystem. In fact, the role of auditors has never been more critical — not merely in checking compliance, but in upholding trust. And trust, once lost, is hard to rebuild.

    18. Auditors are expected to provide an independent, professional opinion on whether the financial statements present a true and fair view of the NBFC’s financial position and comply with regulatory and accounting standards. However, in today’s complex and dynamic environment, this is no longer enough.

    19. Recent incidents — both in India and abroad — have shown that traditional financial audits must evolve. Auditors must bring technical expertise, forensic insight, and an ethical lens to their work. Red flags must not be ignored. Complex structures, derivatives, off-balance sheet items, related party transactions, and provisioning policies must be closely examined.

Facilitative Role of Regulators and Supervisors

    20. As regulators and supervisors, we shoulder a dual responsibility — to safeguard stability and discipline, while also fostering an environment that encourages innovation, inclusion, and sustainable growth. Contrary to perception in certain quarters, our approach actively seeks to strike the right balance. At the Reserve Bank of India, we are acutely aware that regulation is not merely about control; it is about enabling responsible financial intermediation within a well-defined and transparent framework. Several initiatives in recent years reflect this facilitative and proportionate approach to regulation. In my previous role as a commercial banker, I had the fortuitous opportunity to be closely associated with one such initiative -the Regulations Review Authority 2.0 – which reinforced the RBI’s strong commitment to easing the regulatory burden and streamlining compliance without compromising regulatory objectives.

    21. The regulatory framework for NBFCs has evolved in the recent years with this understanding — gradually moving toward greater harmonisation with banks where warranted, while still preserving operational flexibility suited to the unique role NBFCs play in the financial system. The introduction of the scale-based regulatory framework explicitly recognises that the intensity of regulation and supervision must be proportionate to systemic importance. At the same time, the regulatory architecture encourages the development of responsible innovation and healthy competition in the sector.

    22. Similarly, the role of the supervisor has also become more interactive and forward-looking. It is not just about identifying compliance breaches after the fact, but about engaging with entities to strengthen internal systems, enhance governance, and build resilience against emerging risks. Through onsite inspections, offsite surveillance, thematic reviews, and structured engagements, the supervisory process aims to be a partner in the financial sector’s long-term soundness — not an impediment to its progress.

    Conclusion

    23. Our shared vision is clear: a dynamic, inclusive, and trusted NBFC sector that complements the banking system and serves the evolving needs of the Indian economy. And the way to achieve it is through shared responsibility — in governance, in customer protection, in financial prudence, and in ethical conduct.

    24. We in the regulatory community stand committed to supporting this journey. Our intent is not to stifle innovation but to ensure that growth is sustainable, risks are well-managed, and customer trust is never compromised. On behalf of the RBI, I can assure you that as regulators and supervisors we will remain committed to playing our part, not just as watchdogs, but as enablers of a robust, inclusive, and future-ready financial ecosystem.

    25. This conference gives us an opportunity to reflect on how we can contribute to this shared agenda. Whether making strategic decisions, chairing audit committees, or signing off on financials, drafting regulations or conducting supervision — we are shaping the sector’s future.

    26. Therefore, let us work together — with clarity of purpose and unity of action — to build a stronger, fairer, and more resilient NBFC ecosystem. Wealth creation should not just be for personal or institutional gain but to support the community, reflecting a sense of shared responsibility amongst all of us, in our pursuit to achieve an inclusive growth for all and realise the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

    27. With this I wish you all fruitful and enriching deliberations over the course of this conference and look forward to the ideas and insights that will emerge in pursuit of our shared vision. Thank you for this opportunity and wish you all good luck, Jai Hind!

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) — The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAA) has launched an industry-wide initiative calling on automakers to avoid disorderly competition in the country’s booming new energy vehicle (NEV) market.

The KAA statement stressed that despite the rapid growth of China’s NEV industry, which accounts for more than 40 percent of new vehicle sales in the country, the industry has seen a decline in profitability in recent years, largely due to increased “involutionary-style” competition accompanied by chaotic price wars.

Continuously increasing investment is needed to ensure after-sales service and innovative development of enterprises, and disorderly price wars seriously affect the normal business operations of enterprises, threaten the stability of industrial chains and supply chains, and drag the sector into a vicious circle, the KAA said.

The KAA noted that the recent significant price cuts initiated by one of the major automakers on May 23, which were subsequently followed by others, caused panic in the market.

The association warned that such price wars would further reduce the profitability of enterprises, thereby affecting the quality of products and after-sales services. This would not only hinder the healthy development of the industry itself, but also harm the rights and interests of consumers and create a hidden security threat.

All enterprises must strictly adhere to the principles of fair competition, while advantaged enterprises should not seek to displace other players in order to gain a monopoly, the initiative notes.

In addition to legitimate price adjustment measures, businesses should not sell their products at prices below cost, engage in deceptive marketing practices, or distort market order in ways that harm the fundamental interests of the industry and consumers, the CAA said.

All enterprises are also encouraged to conduct self-inspection and correct any identified problems in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations of the country. -0-

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Message of the Holy Father Leo XIV to the Bishops’ Conference of France on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the canonization of Saint John Eudes, Saint John Mary Vianney, and Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus

    Source: The Holy See

Message of the Holy Father Leo XIV to the Bishops’ Conference of France on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the canonization of Saint John Eudes, Saint John Mary Vianney, and Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, 31.05.2025
The following is the Message sent by the Holy Father Leo XIV to the Bishops’ Conference of France on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the canonization of Saint John Eudes, Saint John Mary Vianney, and Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus:

    Message of the Holy Father
I am happy to be able to address you for the first time, pastors of the Church of France, and through you, all your faithful, as this month of May 2025 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the canonization of three Saints whom, by the grace of God, your country has given to the universal Church: Saint John Eudes (1601-1680), Saint John Mary Vianney (1786-1859) and Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face (1873-1897). In raising them to the glory of the altars, my predecessor Pius XI wanted to present them to the People of God as teachers to listen to, models to imitate, and powerful supporters to pray to and invoke. The scale of the challenges facing the Church in France a century later, and the continuing relevance of these three holy figures in meeting them, lead me to invite you to give special prominence to this anniversary.
In this brief Message, I will mention just one spiritual trait that John Eudes, John Mary Vianney and Thérèse have in common and present in a very meaningful and attractive way to the men and women of today: they loved Jesus unreservedly in a simple, strong and authentic way; they experienced his goodness and tenderness in a special daily closeness, and they bore witness to it in an admirable missionary drive.
The late Pope Francis left us, rather like a testament, a beautiful Encyclical on the Sacred Heart in which he states: “That stream which is never exhausted, never passes away … offers itself time and time again to all those who wish to love as he did. For his love alone can bring about a new humanity” (Dilexit nos, 219). There could be no more beautiful and simple programme of evangelization and mission for your country: to help everyone discover the tender and devoted love that Jesus has for them, to the point of transforming their lives.
And in this respect, our three Saints are undoubtedly masters whose life and doctrine I invite you to constantly make known and appreciated by the People of God. Was Saint John Eudes not the first to celebrate the liturgical worship of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary? Was Saint John Mary Vianney not the priest who gave himself passionately to his ministry and who said: “The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus”? and finally, was Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face not the great Doctor of scientia amoris that our world needs, she who “breathed” the Name of Jesus at every moment of her life, with spontaneity and freshness, and who taught the little ones an “easy” way to access it?
Celebrating the centenary of the canonization of these three saints is first and foremost an invitation to give thanks to the Lord for the marvels he has accomplished in this land of France over long centuries of evangelization and Christian life. Saints do not appear spontaneously but, by grace, emerge from living Christian communities that have been able to transmit the faith to them, to kindle in their hearts the love of Jesus and the desire to follow him. This Christian heritage still belongs to you, it still deeply permeates your culture and remains alive in many hearts.
This is why I express the hope that these celebrations will not merely evoke nostalgia for a past that might seem bygone, but that they will awaken hope and give rise to a new missionary impetus. With the help of the saints he has given you and whom you celebrate, God can renew the marvels he has accomplished in the past. Will Saint Thérèse not be the Patroness of the missions in the very lands where she was born? Will Saint John Mary Vianney and Saint John Eudes not be able to speak to the conscience of many young people about the beauty, greatness and fruitfulness of the priesthood, to inspire their enthusiastic desire for it, and to give them the courage to respond generously to the call, at a time when the lack of vocations is harshly felt in your dioceses and priests are under increasing strain? I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the priests of France from the bottom of my heart for their courageous and persevering commitment, and to express my paternal affection for them.
Dear brother Bishops, I invoke the intercession of Saint John Eudes, Saint John Mary Vianney and Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, for your country and the People of God who are courageous pilgrims there, despite the contrary and sometimes hostile winds of indifference, materialism and individualism. May they give courage to these People, in the certainty that Christ, the Saviour of the world, is truly risen.
Imploring upon France the maternal protection of her powerful Patroness, Our Lady of the Assumption, I impart to each of you, and to all those entrusted to your pastoral care, the Apostolic Blessing.
From the Vatican, 28 May 2025

  • MIL-OSI Security: Southfield Doctor Convicted of Fraudulently Obtaining $1.7M PPP Loan

Source: Office of United States Attorneys

DETROIT – On May 29, 2025, a federal jury convicted Dr. Reginald Eburuche of Southfield of bank fraud, United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. announced.

Gorgon was joined in the announcement by Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Detroit Division.

Dr. Eburuche was found guilty of fraudulently obtaining a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan in July 2020, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, for his start-up business Renovis Healthcare.  According to evidence presented at trial, after being unsuccessful in obtaining a line of credit for this new business venture in 2019, Eburuche looked to the PPP program as a source of potential seed-funding—$1.7M at 1% interest.  In order to get that money though, he grossly inflated the number of employees and the average monthly payroll for his fledgling company.  In support of his application, he also created and uploaded fraudulent tax documents, meant to make it appear as though his stated headcount and salary expenditures were legitimate.  A large portion of the funds were frozen and seized in advance of trial.

“When a licensed professional choses fraud over integrity, the harm runs deeper than dollars,” said U.S. Attorney Gorgon. “Dr. Eburuche stole money meant to keep workers afloat during a time of crisis. This Office will continue to pursue those who exploited these programs for personal gain.”

“Dr. Reginald Eburuche’s conviction for Bank Fraud represents not only an abuse of taxpayer dollars but a betrayal of public trust during a time of national hardship,” said Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office. “I commend the dedicated efforts of our Oakland County Resident Agency members and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan, whose contributions were vital in concluding this case. We remain fully committed to collaborating with our community and law enforcement allies to identify, investigate, and bring to justice those who exploit government relief programs for personal financial gain.”

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Carl Gilmer-Hill and was investigated by special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  The United States Attorney’s Office also thanks the Small Business Administration and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration for their support.

  • ISRO’s Gaganyatri to carry out microgravity research experiments during upcoming Axiom-4 mission

    Source: Government of India (4)

Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Gaganyatri will carry out a series of shortlisted microgravity research experiments aboard the International Space Station (ISS) during the upcoming Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission, according to an official statement from ISRO.

The Axiom-4 mission, scheduled for launch on June 8, will be piloted by Gaganyatri Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who is set to travel to the ISS. ISRO has selected seven microgravity experiments proposed by Indian Principal Investigators (PIs) from various national research and development laboratories and academic institutions for execution aboard the ISS as part of the Ax-4 mission.

Microgravity research presents valuable opportunities for advancements in fields such as human health, physical and life sciences, material science, pharmaceutical development, and biotechnology. The selected studies include investigations into the impact of microgravity and ISS radiation on edible microalgae, the sprouting of salad seeds in space and its relevance to crew nutrition, the survival, revival, reproduction, and transcriptomic analysis of the eutardigrade Paramacrobiotus sp. BLR strain in space, and the effect of metabolic supplements on muscle regeneration under microgravity. Other experiments will examine human interaction with electronic displays in microgravity and the influence of microgravity on the growth and yield of food crop seeds.

These experiments are designed to utilize existing research facilities on board the ISS. Given the safety-focused operational philosophy and other mission-related constraints of human spaceflight, the shortlisted experiments are currently undergoing rigorous evaluations and reviews on the ground prior to launch.

According to ISRO, the experience gained from executing these experiments will help nurture a microgravity research ecosystem in India, enabling the inclusion of more advanced microgravity studies in future missions of the Indian Space Programme.

The Ax-4 mission marks a historic milestone as it includes the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will become the first ISRO astronaut to travel to the ISS and the second Indian to go to space after Rakesh Sharma, who flew aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 1984. IAF Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair has been designated as the backup pilot for the Ax-4 mission in the event Shukla is unable to fly.

Alongside Shukla, the Ax-4 crew will include two mission specialists: European Space Agency (ESA) project astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary. The mission will be commanded by Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut and the current Director of Human Spaceflight at Axiom Space.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Investors are calling Trump a chicken – here’s why that matters

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Alex Dryden, PhD Student in Economics, Department of Economics, SOAS, University of London

Calling someone “chicken” might sound like a playground insult, but it’s exactly the label some financial investors have begun attaching to US president Donald Trump. The “Taco” trade, short for “Trump Always Chickens Out”, has gained traction in financial circles in recent weeks, as investors come to believe that whenever markets begin to slide as a result of one of his policy decisions, Trump tends to retreat.

The jibe appears to have struck a nerve. When a reporter asked him about the “chicken” reputation this week, Trump bristled. “Oh isn’t that nice – I chicken out. I’ve never heard that,” he snapped. The president returned to the topic later to criticise the “nasty” question and insisted that he was no such thing.

Policy reversals have been a hallmark of both Trump’s first and second terms. During the 2018-19 trade wars, he frequently threatened sweeping tariffs only to water them down in subsequent rounds of negotiation.

A similar pattern has emerged this year. In early April, Trump’s “liberation day” announcement triggered a sharp sell-off, with the S&P 500 falling more than 12% over the following week.

However, as market volatility surged, the administration softened its positioned and opted to delay the tariffs for 90 days. As the tariff plans were softened, markets rebounded. The index is now 4% higher than it was before the announcement and up 0.7% year-to-date.

To the president’s supporters, these policy U-turns reflect his shrewd negotiating tactics designed to extract concessions or cajole reluctant governments into striking trade deals. But to many investors, the pattern looks less like strategy and more like retreat. And while the Taco nickname might sound like a playground insult, for financial investors the jibe has a real impact on navigating financial markets.

    Credibility is currency

When investors call a politician or policymaker a “chicken”, it’s not just a jab at their courage. It’s a much more serious insult that calls into question their credibility. And in financial markets, that’s one of the most valuable assets a leader can have.

As a policymaker or politician, communicating successfully with markets depends on trust. Investors allocate capital based on expectations about the future – inflation, trade flows, interest rates, fiscal spending – and those expectations are influenced not only by what policymakers do, but by what they say.

If a leader regularly threatens sweeping economic action but repeatedly backs down at the first sign of trouble, their credibility begins to erode.

Once that doubt takes hold, it changes the dynamic. Investors begin to ignore warnings as threats are brushed off and policymakers’ influence loses its force.

The erosion of a leader’s credibility among investors is likely initially to dampen market volatility as investors begin to ignore the words of politicians and policymakers. They assume that the status quo will remain in place as a leader is unwilling or unable to instigate the changes they had initially proposed, leading to little change in financial markets. This weakens a leader’s ability to steer market expectations and, by extension, the broader economy.

However, the Taco mindset could be dangerous if it takes hold in markets. Once investors start to assume that Trump will always blink, they build their portfolios around that expectation. Talk of sweeping economic changes or significant increases in tariffs begin to be ignored as investors lean into risky positions in the belief that escalation will be avoided at the last minute. This can create a false sense of calm that holds only as long as Trump plays to type.

‘It’s called negotiating.’ Trump was clearly angered by the chicken jibe.

But the “chicken” jibe has clearly angered the president. He may well be looking for an opportunity to change investors’ minds. If Trump decides to hold the line by pushing through tariffs without compromise even in the face of legal action, or let a standoff over the US debt ceiling run hot, this could catch complacent investors off-guard.

The resulting repricing is likely to be sharp and disorderly. Volatility could spike, not because Trump changed, but because investors assumed he never would and then overreact when he does. In that sense, the real risk of the Taco mindset isn’t that it insults Trump – it’s that it provokes a stubborn response. A president who digs his heels in and ploughs ahead with risky policies despite all the warning signs would be bad news for the whole world – and the global economy.

  • Providing service to taxpayers is duty of tax officials: FM Sitharaman

    Source: Government of India (4)

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday emphasized that it is the duty of tax department officials to serve taxpayers, and that this responsibility must be carried out with “transparency and integrity.”

“To provide service to the taxpayer is our duty. While serving taxpayers, transparency and integrity are crucial in earning their trust and confidence. I am confident that the Board and the field formations will remain sensitive and responsive,” the Finance Minister stated on the social media platform X.

Her statement came in response to a detailed explanation issued by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) regarding a business entity that had applied for GST registration.

The applicant had complained about a delay in the processing of the application. However, the CBIC provided details showing that the delay was due to the applicant’s failure to respond to a specific query concerning the designation of the person who had signed on behalf of the company.

Referring to the case of Vinod Gupta, who raised the issue on LinkedIn, the CBIC clarified on X: “The application was filed this week on 26th May (Monday) and was assigned to Delhi State GST. The Central GST authorities had no role in this matter.”

According to the Delhi State GST authorities, the application was processed immediately, and a query was raised regarding the missing designation of the person who signed the rent agreement on behalf of the company. At this stage, the ARN (Application Reference Number) was pending a reply from the taxpayer, and the taxpayer had been duly informed, the statement added.

The application will be processed by the Delhi GST authorities upon receipt of the pending information, the CBIC clarified.

The CBIC also urged the applicant to refrain from spreading incorrect information on social media without verifying the facts.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Tunnel runs smoothly after takeover

    Source: Hong Kong Information Services

The Transport Department said that the Government took over the Tai Lam Tunnel at 0.00am, and that the implementation of the new tolls and HKeToll has mostly been smooth so far.

Commissioner for Transport Angela Lee visited the Tai Lam Tunnel Administration Building in the small hours of today and was briefed by the operator’s management on the switchover works conducted during its full closure.

She also oversaw the tests and preparations prior to the introduction of HKeToll at the control centre.

The transport chief met tunnel management and engineering personnel of the operator and thanked the team for racing against time in completing the takeover work thoroughly, efficiently and smoothly.

Ms Lee was glad to note that the tunnel reopened at 5am as scheduled with the launch of HKeToll. She appreciated the tireless efforts of the multidisciplinary team comprising the Transport Department, the Highways Department and the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department in completing the necessary drills as well as installing adequate traffic signs and road markings, providing motorists with a smoother road experience.

The Transport Department’s Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre has been closely monitoring the traffic conditions before and after the takeover of the tunnel, and the traffic in both directions has generally been smooth so far. In addition, the traffic of alternative routes, such as Tuen Mun Road and Tolo Highway, has largely been smooth.

The centre will closely monitor the overall traffic conditions on June 2, the first working day, including the application of time-varying tolls on private cars and motorcycles at the tunnel for the first time.

Ms Lee said that as motorists, transport trades and members of the public may take time to adapt to new routes and adjust their commuting habits, traffic flow and public transport services will be closely monitored in the vicinity of the tunnel.

Following the substantial reduction of tolls and the roll-out of HKeToll, the Transport Department hopes to make optimal use of the tunnel’s spare capacity effectively to alleviate the busy traffic on alternative routes, such as Tuen Mun Road, thereby improving the flow of people and freight between the New Territories West/North and the urban areas, as well as achieving the objective of providing a smooth commute and bringing benefits to all sectors.

Jana Merunková is the winner of the third round of the CNB Governor’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Financial and Economic Literacy. The Governor of the Czech National Bank Aleš Michl presented the award to her on Saturday, 31 May, during a ceremony held at the CNB’s Visitor Centre in Prague.

The aim of the award is to highlight the importance of financial and economic literacy across all age groups. In this way, the CNB annually recognises and supports individuals who, with exceptional commitment, have long been engaged in raising awareness in this area and whose projects help promote greater financial responsibility among the public.

“Financial literacy is not a theory – it’s a life skill. It helps people avoid debt, navigate contracts and plan for the future. At the CNB, we want money to be explained in plain language. A big thank you to those who put in the time and energy to do this. That’s one of the reasons this award was created,” said CNB Governor Aleš Michl.

As in previous years, the public was involved in selecting the winner and could nominate candidates using an online form on the CNB website until 28 March. A total of 30 individuals received public support in this way. The final decision on the award was made by the Governor of the CNB at the recommendation of an advisory team.

Jana Merunková has worked in the field of financial and economic literacy for more than fifteen years. After a successful business career, in 2009 she became the expert guarantor of the projects run by non-profit organisation yourchance o.p.s., which focuses on teaching financial literacy and fostering entrepreneurship among children, young people and socially disadvantaged groups. She has also been an active member of expert working groups at the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports since 2013.

“This award from the Governor is a strong affirmation that my work is meaningful. At the same time, I see it as an incentive to keep going, as there is still much to be done – whether we are talking about improving the practical grasp of financial literacy in schools or nurturing such skills across generations and other target groups,” added Jana Merunková upon receiving the award.

The award ceremony for the CNB Governor’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Financial and Economic Literacy took place on 31 May 2025 at the CNB Visitor Centre, which plays a key role in the central bank’s educational activities. The centre offers free exhibitions and programmes focusing on the world of money, the economy and monetary policy. Tens of thousands of people visit the centre every year, with primary and secondary school pupils making up roughly half of all visitors.

India’s active Covid-19 caseload has climbed to 2,710, with seven deaths reported across states in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday. A total of 1,170 patients have been discharged during the same period.

Most fatalities involved patients with multiple comorbidities. Delhi reported the death of a 60-year-old woman who had undergone surgery for acute intestinal obstruction. Covid-19 was detected incidentally. Gujarat reported one death; details are awaited.

In Karnataka, a 70-year-old man with several underlying conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and ischemic heart disease, died of acute cardiorespiratory arrest. His Covid-19 status is pending RT-PCR confirmation.

Maharashtra recorded two deaths. One was a 67-year-old man with ARDS and pneumonia, who tested positive for Covid-19 and had several comorbidities. The second was a 21-year-old man with diabetic ketoacidosis and a lower respiratory tract infection. One of the deaths was reconciled from previous data.

Punjab reported the death of a 39-year-old man with Hepatitis B and respiratory complications. Tamil Nadu recorded one fatality — a 60-year-old man with diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease.

Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases at 1,147. Reconciliation of mortality data is ongoing. Bihar is yet to provide its daily update.

Union Minister of State for Health and AYUSH (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, said the Centre is “fully prepared” to manage any potential rise in infections.

“We have reviewed the infrastructure developed during earlier Covid-19 waves, such as oxygen plants and ICU beds. Preparations are in place, and health systems are equipped to respond effectively,” he said.

  • We don’t believe in dialogue with a gun pointed towards our forehead: Tharoor clarifies India’s stance against Pakistan

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, leading an all-party delegation to Colombia, stressed that there can be no dialogue with Pakistan until it takes concrete steps to dismantle terrorist networks operating from its territory. He emphasised that while India recognises the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue, such engagement cannot occur “with a gun pointed at its forehead.”

“We do not dispute the value of dialogue, but no nation can be expected to negotiate with a gun pointed at its forehead,” Tharoor said, leading an all-party parliamentary delegation to Latin America. He emphasized that Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence coexisted with an unwavering commitment to justice and freedom.

“Gandhiji taught us Ahimsa, but he also led a determined struggle for independence. Peace must be accompanied by self-respect, and freedom must come without fear,” he asserted.

Tharoor made it clear that India is open to dialogue — but only once Pakistan takes credible steps to dismantle terror infrastructure on its soil.

The Congress MP cited the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 civilian lives, as a turning point. “This was not just an act of terror — it was a targeted attack, where the victims were asked their religion before being shot. Such acts not only claim innocent lives but also affect the livelihoods of the people of Kashmir,” he said.

In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting known terror launch pads and infrastructure across the border. “We struck nine identified terror bases with precision, avoiding civilian areas. Our message was clear: we will respond strongly, but responsibly,” Tharoor explained.

Tharoor condemned Pakistan’s retaliatory shelling of civilian areas and reiterated India’s policy of proportionate response. “If you hit us, we will hit you hard. If you stop, we stop. After 18 hours, they stopped.”

Tharoor also drew attention to the unity of the Indian delegation, which comprises MPs from five political parties, seven states, and three religions. “We are united in our message: India stands firmly against terrorism and will continue to engage the world on this front.”

The delegation, part of India’s diplomatic outreach, has visited Panama, Guyana, and Colombia, and is scheduled to travel next to Brazil and the United States.

  • PM Modi unveils ₹300 coin honouring Ahilyabai Holkar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled a special ₹300 coin to commemorate the 300th birth anniversary of Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, the revered 18th-century ruler of Malwa. The coin was released during the Women Empowerment Maha Sammelan at Jamboree Maidan in Bhopal.

The commemorative coin, issued by the Union Ministry of Culture, bears an embossed image of Ahilyabai Holkar, paying tribute to her enduring legacy. An official gazette notification regarding the release of the special-edition coin was issued by the Ministry of Finance.

Before unveiling the coin, Prime Minister Modi garlanded the statue of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar and paid his respects.

As part of the celebrations, the Prime Minister also presented the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Prize to Dr. Jaymati Kashyap from Bastar, Chhattisgarh. Dr. Kashyap was recognised for her work in preserving the Gondi language and rescuing women from human trafficking.

Born on May 31, 1725, in Chondi, Maharashtra, Ahilyabai Holkar is remembered for her enlightened rule and progressive social reforms. After the untimely deaths of her husband and son, she assumed the throne of Indore in 1767 and governed for nearly three decades.

During her reign, she promoted trade, restored temples, and advanced infrastructure projects, including the reconstruction of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple—efforts that earned her the title of the “Philosopher Queen of Malwa.”

The event in Bhopal marked the culmination of ten days of commemorative activities held across Madhya Pradesh, celebrating her contributions to society.

Addressing the large gathering, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav reiterated his government’s commitment to women’s empowerment and inclusive development.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit also marked his first public appearance in Bhopal following the success of ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s recent military operation targeting cross-border terrorism.
