Ranking Members Padilla, Morelle Demand Answers After Trump Administration Moves to Fire Federal Employees Who Fought Election Misinformation

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration with oversight over federal elections, and U.S. Representative Joe Morelle (N.Y.-25), Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, pressed senior officials at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) for answers after reporting indicated employees who previously worked on election misinformation and disinformation issues were placed on administrative leave last Thursday. The lawmakers raised the alarm on the impacts of these firings on the agency’s ability to conduct essential election-related work.

“Election-related mis- and disinformation from domestic and foreign actors continues to threaten the strength and integrity of our democracy by weakening trust in our elections and promoting falsehoods about election officials that have resulted in threats against them and their families,” wrote the lawmakers. “Understanding the trends in misinformation and providing state and local officials with the tools to counter it is critical to protecting and supporting the effective and secure administration of our elections.”

“Regardless of party affiliation, all Americans deserve and expect free and fair elections,” continued the lawmakers.

The removal of these employees is another example of the Trump Administration ousting career government officials who may have worked on matters that did not align with President Trump’s personal viewpoints, including Attorney General Pam Bondi’s recent shut down of the FBI task force that worked to uncover covert efforts by Russia, China, Iran and other foreign adversaries to manipulate U.S. voters. President Trump also recently took the unprecedented and illegal step of firing Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chair Ellen Weintraub. Yesterday, Senator Padilla led 10 Democratic Senators to demand President Trump rescind this firing.

The lawmakers requested a response by February 28, 2025.

Full text of the letter is available here and below:

Dear Ms. Bean and Ms. Harrington:

We write to express grave concern about recent reporting that employees at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) in the Election Security and Resilience division, including individuals who previously worked on addressing the risks posed by election mis- and disinformation, as well as foreign influence operations, were notified on February 6, 2025, that they were being placed on administrative leave. Furthermore, public reporting notes that two of these individuals “stopped working on mis-, dis- and malinformation over a year ago,” raising significant concerns about how CISA is identifying which employees are being placed on leave.

As you know, a key component of CISA’s mission is to serve as a resource and partner for state and local election officials by identifying and providing resources to address physical and cyber threats to election infrastructure as a part of critical infrastructure. CISA’s establishing legislation clearly directs it to work on elections, with a directive to “coordinate a national effort to secure and protect against critical infrastructure risks” and to “provide analyses, expertise, and other technical assistance to critical infrastructure owners and operators.”

Election-related mis- and disinformation from domestic and foreign actors continues to threaten the strength and integrity of our democracy by weakening trust in our elections and promoting falsehoods about election officials that have resulted in threats against them and their families. Understanding the trends in misinformation and providing state and local officials with the tools to counter it is critical to protecting and supporting the effective and secure administration of our elections. CISA’s recent actions, coupled with the disturbing move by Attorney General Pam Bondi to dissolve the FBI task force that worked to uncover covert efforts by Russia, China, Iran and other foreign adversaries to manipulate U.S. voters, makes our elections more vulnerable to attacks by foreign adversaries.

The removal of these employees raises significant questions as to CISA’s continued commitment to election-related work, particularly as the notifications followed CISA’s notable absence from two conferences for election officials in Washington, D.C.

Out of significant concern for the future of the agency’s work with election officials and safeguarding elections as critical infrastructure, we request responses to the following questions no later than February 28, 2025.

    1. How many employees at CISA have been placed on administrative leave, what were their current positions, and what duties were these employees currently assigned?

    2. How many employees at CISA currently work on election security?

    3. In total, how many employees at CISA currently working on election security have been placed on administrative leave? Do you anticipate additional employees working on election security to be placed on administrative leave, to be directed to undertake other non-election security-related duties, or otherwise impacted by changes in their work?

    4. Which contracts have been terminated and how many contract employees are no longer working on election security?

    5. What direction has CISA been given by the Department of Homeland Security, the White House, or the Department of Government Efficiency towards the treatment of employees in positions relating to elections?

    6. Were employees at CISA given guidance not to attend conferences or to limit other public-facing engagements, including meetings, related to elections or with election officials?

    7. Has any guidance been provided to employees on their engagement with election officials? If so, what is CISA’s current guidance?

    8. What work is currently ongoing to secure elections and support election officials?

    9. What assessment is being done to evaluate CISA’s work during the 2024 election cycle?

    10. What work is being done to combat the ongoing threat of election-related mis- and disinformation?

Regardless of party affiliation, all Americans deserve and expect free and fair elections. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter.

    Sincerely,

  • MIL-OSI USA: Sen. Johnson Joins Finance Committee Republicans in Vowing to Oppose Any Short-Term Tax Package

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Wisconsin Ron Johnson

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) joined U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Finance Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Senators James Lankford (R-Okla.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), members of the Senate Finance Committee, in sending a letter to President Donald Trump vowing to oppose any tax package that only provides temporary relief.

“You were elected with a mandate to do big things. One of those big things is to provide lasting tax relief for small businesses and families across the country. As members of the Senate Finance Committee, we write to express our support for your position that the expiring provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act must be permanent and not sunset. After passage of your tax cuts in 2017, we had a booming economy with soaring investment, higher wages, increased productivity, and zero corporate inversions. Without action, at the end of this year, taxes will increase for Americans in every income group and nearly six million jobs are at risk. A temporary extension of these pro-growth and pro-family policies is a missed opportunity. Businesses need certainty while investing in their companies and taxpayers should not fear tax hikes due to Congressional inaction. Congressional Republicans have an historic opportunity to enact this lasting tax relief. Failure to act boldly does a disservice to the American people who entrusted us to deliver in November. Thus, we will not support a tax package that only provides temporary relief from tax hikes,” the senators wrote.

  • MIL-OSI USA: President Trump Demands Fair, Reciprocal Trade

    US Senate News:

    Source: The White House
Today, President Donald J. Trump unveiled a plan for fair, free, reciprocal trade as he makes clear to the world that the United States will no longer tolerate being ripped off. The U.S. has one of the most open economies in the world, yet our trading partners keep their markets closed to U.S. exports — and reciprocal trade will finally correct that imbalance.
President Trump’s plan to restore fairness and put American workers first was met with immediate praise:
Renewable Fuels Association: “For almost a decade now, we have spent precious time and resources fighting back against an unfair and unjustified tariff regime imposed by Brazil’s government on U.S. ethanol imports. What’s more ironic is that these tariff barriers have been erected against U.S. ethanol imports while our country has openly accepted—and even encouraged and incentivized—ethanol imports from Brazil. As the two largest ethanol producers on the planet, we long enjoyed a cooperative free-trade relationship with Brazil involving ethanol, relying on each other when there were shortfalls or disruptions in the U.S. or Brazilian marketplace. However, that bilateral cooperation was abandoned by Brazil in 2017, when they instituted a tariff rate quota scheme, and eventually adopted a tariff in 2020. The Brazilian tariff on U.S. ethanol now stands at 18 percent and has virtually eliminated all market access for U.S. ethanol producers. We thank President Trump for taking this action and hope this reciprocal tariff will help encourage a return to free and fair ethanol trade relationship with Brazil.”
American Iron and Steel Institute: “AISI applauds President Trump’s action today ordering the development of a comprehensive plan for restoring fairness in U.S. trade relationships and countering non-reciprocal trading arrangements. American steel producers know well the negative impact of foreign unfair trade practices, including subsidies, currency manipulation and other unfair and discriminatory policies and practices, on domestic industries and their workers … We look forward to working with the Secretary of Commerce, the U.S. Trade Representative and other key administration officials as they develop their plan of action to ensure reciprocity in international trade and to preserve the competitiveness of the American steel industry and other sectors.”
Growth Energy: “While American biofuel producers have been almost entirely blocked off from the Brazilian market, Brazilian producers have enjoyed unfettered access to the U.S. In some cases, certain policies in the U.S. even incentivize the use of imported Brazilian ethanol instead of ethanol produced here in the U.S. This runs contrary to putting America first, and is exactly why President Trump is taking steps to address this issue. Thank you, President Trump for taking action and pushing for a level playing field for American ethanol producers.”
Small Business Administration: “President Trump is right: restoring a level playing field on trade will unlock the next blue collar boom – creating jobs and powering our economy through ‘Made in America.’ Huge news for Main Street!”
Energy Secretary Chris Wright: “President’s Trump’s ‘Fair and Reciprocal Plan’ on trade puts the American people first. As a former businessman, it’s great to see our country being run like a business and fighting for fairness on trade– it’s the American way!”
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum: “President Trump is making America strong again. His Fair and Reciprocal Plan is commonsense: if you impose tariffs on us, we will impose tariffs on you in return.”
Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy: “Bravo, President Trump! Thank you for announcing the Fair and Reciprocal Plan, which is based on legislation we worked on together in your first term. Unfair trade practices have hurt America’s transportation and infrastructure sectors for too long. President Trump’s trade plan will strengthen supply chains, boost infrastructure investments, and expand American transportation solutions. We promised a golden age of transportation, and I will not rest until America’s transportation system is great again!”
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner: “For too long Washington has put foreign interests above Americans — that ends today. @POTUS’ Fair and Reciprocal Plan will put American workers on a level playing field.”
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin: “The American people elected @POTUS with a mandate to grow our economy and bring back American manufacturing. When it comes to Reciprocal tariffs, no one should ever underestimate President Trump’s vision, long game, and determination to deliver the Great American Comeback.”
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA): “For too long, foreign countries have exploited America through unfair trade practices. President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs aim to confront these countries, protecting American workers and businesses through trade that is fair again. The Trump policies are focused on leveling the playing field and putting America FIRST.”
Sen. Jim Banks (R-IN): “The globalist approach to trade threw our workers under a bus driven by their foreign competitors. President Trump’s America First trade plan corrects this injustice that our industries and workers have faced for decades. The reciprocal tariffs announced today will bring back fairness and prosperity and stop Americans from being taken advantage of.”
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN): “President Trump is putting American workers and farmers first. He will end unfair trade deals and prioritize goods made in America! With President Trump at the negotiating table, we are going to get the best possible deal.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC): “Most countries charge us far more in tariffs than we charge them. Those days are over. I applaud President Trump’s decision to impose reciprocal tariffs against our trading partners. Whatever tariffs they put on American products, we will put on their products. This will be a game changer. Simple and brilliant.”
Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS): “Gone are the days of unfair trade deals that give foreign nations the upper hand. Today, President Trump put the world on notice: America will no longer be taken advantage of.”
Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-NE): “The average weighted tariff on foreign products coming into the U.S. is 1.5%, yet the average tariff on U.S. products globally is 6%. President Trump promised to bring those numbers closer to balance. These tariffs are a step toward accomplishing that goal.”
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL): “President Trump’s fight for a level playing field and reciprocal treatment is common sense. The U.S. is done treating others better than they’re treating us. President Trump understands the art of the deal, and thanks to his strong leadership, we’re getting better deals that will help our businesses and grow our economy!”
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL): “President Trump is brokering deals that put American farmers, manufacturers, and producers first. America has some of the best and brightest manufacturers and there’s no reason we can’t produce most things right here at home.”
Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN): “The master negotiator strikes again. @POTUS is realigning the playing field with countries that have taken advantage of us for far too long and delivering on his promise to put America FIRST.”
Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-MI): “President Trump is wasting no time leveling the playing field. I am optimistic the pressure applied by the ongoing tariff negotiations will lead to a wave of investment across the U.S. @POTUS is keeping his promise to put our economy first.”
Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith (R-MO): “President Trump understands that American workers and manufacturers can outcompete those of any other nation. But for far too long they have been held back by a lack of reciprocity because other countries impose much higher tariffs and other barriers than the United States imposes on imports. President Trump’s Executive Order helps deliver a level playing field for American workers and manufacturers.”
Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL): “President Trump has just announced RECIPROCAL TARIFFS for countries unfairly treating American products! If you want to sell to the USA, we must have access to your market as well. What is fair, is fair!”
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL): “We will no longer tolerate being ripped-off by the rest of the world. Under President Trump, government is putting the American people first again. And that means RECIPROCAL TARIFFS”
Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-IA): “Brazil imposes an 18% tariff on U.S. ethanol while we only charge Brazil 2.5%. In 2024, that imbalance resulted in our nation importing $200 million in Brazilian ethanol while Brazil only imported $52 million in U.S. ethanol. Our farmers deserve better!”
Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD): “The days of America being taken advantage of are over. The “Fair and Reciprocal Plan” will put the American worker first and bring fairness back to international trade.”
Rep. Diana Harshbarger (R-TN): “Our nation has been at the bad end of business deals regarding trade practices with other countries for far too long. That’s coming to an end. President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs are putting the world on notice — the gravy train is over, and we won’t be taken advantage of anymore.”
Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK): “President Trump is a strong leader – he’s not allowing the world to take advantage of the United States any longer. These reciprocal tariffs will incentivize other nations to level the playing field and remove long-standing, exorbitant tariffs. America FIRST!”
Rep. Riley Moore (R-WV): “President Trump just announced plans to implement reciprocal tariffs on the foreign countries who are ripping us off. I’m proud to be leading this effort in Congress.”
Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL): “I thank President Trump for standing up for American workers with his bold plan to restore balance and fairness to the marketplace. He and his administration understand that our workers deserve trade policies that are fair and beneficial to all.  For far too long, blue-collar communities in the United States have been ripped off by foreign competitors benefiting from manipulative trade practices. If other countries believe they can continue to cheat the American people of their share of prosperity, they are sadly mistaken. President Trump has the right plan to secure our economy, restore fairness to international trade, and bring back good-paying jobs to the United States.”
Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-TX): “American workers, farmers, and manufacturers finally have a President who fights for them! I applaud President Trump’s plan to combat unfair trade practices. Our best days are still ahead of us!”
House Republican Study Committee: “The Trump administration just announced reciprocal tariffs for countries like China that rip off the United States. It’s past time to flip the script on this. President Trump is trying to restore fairness in trade, ensuring that other countries are held to account for slapping tariffs on American goods. Gone are the days of our great nation being taken advantage of. Period.”
President Trump’s plan to restore fairness and put American workers first was met with immediate praise:

  • MIL-OSI USA: Cotton, Boozman, Thune Reintroduce Legislation to Repeal the Federal Death Tax

    US Senate News:

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    February 13, 2025

Cotton, Boozman, Thune Reintroduce Legislation to Repeal the Federal Death Tax

Washington, D.C. — Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) and Senator John Boozman (R-Arkansas) joined U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) and 45 of their Senate Republican colleagues today to reintroduce legislation that would permanently repeal the federal estate tax, commonly known as the death tax. The Death Tax Repeal Act would end this purely punitive tax that can hit family-run farms, ranches, and businesses as the result of the owner’s death.

The legislation is cosponsored by U.S. Sens. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), John Curtis (R-Utah), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Jim Justice (R-W.Va.), John Kennedy (R-La.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), and Todd Young (R-Ind.). Companion legislation was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa).

“Families shouldn’t have to sell major portions of their businesses or farms after the death of a parent just to afford the estate tax. Breaking apart a family’s livelihood is neither fair nor good for the economy. This legislation would end the federal death tax, making it much easier to preserve a family’s legacy and way of life,” said Senator Cotton

“Arkansas’s farm families and small businesses should have the opportunity to preserve their legacies for the next generation instead of getting hit with a penalty that jeopardizes their livelihoods,” said Senator Boozman. “They need certainty and relief from this counterproductive burden. Repealing the death tax supports our agriculture producers and entrepreneurs so they can continue to grow their operations and benefit their local economy.”

“Family farms and ranches play a vital role in our economy and are the lifeblood of rural communities in South Dakota,” said Senator Thune. “Losing even one of them to the death tax is one too many. It’s time to put an end to this punishing, burdensome tax once and for all so that family farms, ranches and small businesses can grow and thrive without costly estate planning or massive tax burdens that can threaten their viability.”

Text of the bill can be found here.

Background on the Death Tax Repeal Act:

    • Fully repeals the Estate Tax.
    • Repeals the Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax (GSTT) for when a grandparent transfers assets to a grandchild.
    • Maintains step-up basis.

  • MIL-OSI USA: After Trump Shutters White House Office, Murphy, Frost Reintroduce Bicameral Legislation To Establish Office Of Gun Violence Prevention

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Connecticut – Chris Murphy

    February 13, 2025

WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and U.S. Representative Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) on Thursday reintroduced the Office of Gun Violence Prevention Act, legislation to establish a permanent office focused on gun violence prevention at the U.S. Department of Justice.
“The White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention played a huge role in implementing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, helping drive down the number of gun deaths by 12 percent last year. It was wildly successful, so of course President Trump shut it down. This legislation would make the Office permanent at the Department of Justice to help state, local, and federal agencies work together to enforce gun safety laws and fund local gun violence prevention programs,” said Murphy.
“Today we are reintroducing the Office of Gun Violence Prevention Act because we will not let the critical, life-saving work and the love and support that this office has offered countless communities no longer exist,” said Frost. “Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress would rather side with the gun lobby than protect our people. But the truth is that leaders like that aren’t just ignoring the gun violence crisis— they are enabling it. But here’s what this Administration doesn’t understand is that we don’t give up. The gun lobby? The politicians who’d rather send “thoughts and prayers” than actually save lives? We outwork them. We out organize them. And we rise above them. We are reintroducing this bill because when innocent lives are on the line, we refuse to back down.”
“GIFFORDS is proud to support the Office of Gun Violence Prevention Act introduced today by Senator Murphy and Congressman Frost. The Office of Gun Violence Prevention wasn’t just a name—it was a proven force for safer communities that brought together law enforcement, public health experts, and community leaders to implement real solutions. We cannot allow this vital work to be undone with each change in administration. By making this office permanent through legislation, we send a clear message that protecting American lives from gun violence isn’t a temporary commitment—it’s a national priority that transcends partisan politics,” said GIFFORDS Vice President of Government and Political Affairs Vanessa N. Gonzalez.
“The Office of Gun Violence Prevention was more than just a policy decision. It was the first time we had a dedicated team inside the White House giving this crisis the attention it deserves,” said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. “We need leaders like Senator Murphy and Representative Frost—along with popular, common sense solutions—driving change to end gun violence in our communities. Our movement isn’t letting up. We’ll keep organizing, not just to protect our progress, but to push it forward.”
“The White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention showed us what’s possible with a whole-of-government approach to fight gun violence. This office helped make a real difference in the fight to keep Americans safe, from driving historic drops in homicides to coordinating urgent resources for communities devastated by senseless acts of gun violence. The shuttering of this office, alongside Trump’s attack on gun safety measures, makes his priorities crystal clear: gun industry profits over American lives. Rep. Frost and Sen. Murphy understand what’s at stake – American lives. Their bill would ensure this vital work continues regardless of who sits in the Oval Office. Congress must act to restore this office and the communities it served,” said Kris Brown, President of Brady.
“Over 1.2 million Americans have been shot since the Sandy Hook shooting tragedy and guns are the leading cause of death for American children and teens. The Biden Administration’s White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention was a landmark achievement. It saved lives by strengthening background checks, cracking down on ghost guns, promoting safe storage, and funding community-based solutions,” said Po Murray, Chairwoman of Newtown Action Alliance. “Homicide rates have declined because of these efforts. But just weeks into his second term, Donald Trump has declared war on these protections. His executive order doesn’t just dismantle progress—it actively puts American lives at risk. That is why we need Congress to step up to support the Office of Gun Violence Prevention Act. The safety of our communities should never depend on who sits in the Oval Office.”
“The Office of Gun Violence Prevention made real, tangible progress — it saved actual human lives. That’s a fact. But it was also a powerful symbol to survivors and young people across the country who yearn for a world where we don’t have to live in terror and fear of being shot anymore,” said Madelyn Cobb, March For Our Lives Policy Manager and a student at George Washington University. “That’s why we called for it back in 2019 at a Democratic Presidential forum, to be a clarion call while Trump callously ignored our pleas for safety in his first term. We’re incredibly happy that Rep. Frost and Sen. Murphy’s bill to codify this office into law is being introduced once again, in the shadow of its unceremonious closure under Trump. At a time when Trump is making it easier for gun violence to metastasize, it is the beacon of hope we need.”
Specifically, the newly created Office of Gun Violence Prevention would:
Convene an Advisory Council of senior DOJ officials, survivors, community violence intervention providers, public health officials, medical professionals who provide trauma care, mental health clinicians, state and local public health department officials, teachers, members of student groups, and veterans.
Coordinate gun violence prevention efforts across federal agencies.
Identify gaps in data needed for gun violence prevention research, policy development, and strategy implementation, and develop a plan to collect and analyze the data.
    Make policy recommendations.
Educate the general public about federal laws, regulations, and available grant programs, including awareness campaigns directed at firearm owners, parents and legal guardians of minors, and gun violence prevention professionals, that include education related to safe storage of firearms and suicide prevention.
Work to optimize the administration of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
Annually report information to Congress on gun violence in the United States, recommendations for policy initiatives to reduce gun violence, and a description of the Director’s activities.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Hoeven, Thune Reintroduce Bill to Repeal the Death Tax

    US Senate News:

    02.13.25

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven (R-N.D.) joined Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) in reintroducing legislation that would permanently repeal the federal estate tax, commonly known as the death tax.

“Our legislation would repeal the death tax and prevent families, particularly those with family farms, from facing unnecessary hardship when a loved one passes away,” said Senator Hoeven. “It removes a major obstacle to estate planning and ensuring the future operations of small businesses and family farms, allowing them to stay intact and continue boosting the economy.”

“Family farms and ranches play a vital role in our economy and are the lifeblood of rural communities in South Dakota,” said Leader Thune. “Losing even one of them to the death tax is one too many. It’s time to put an end to this punishing, burdensome tax once and for all so that family farms, ranches and small businesses can grow and thrive without costly estate planning or massive tax burdens that can threaten their viability.”

Joining Senator Hoeven and Leader Thune in cosponsoring this legislation are Senators Jim Banks (R-Ind.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), John Curtis (R-Utah), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Jim Justice (R-W.Va.), John Kennedy (R-La.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), and Todd Young (R-Ind.).

  • MIL-OSI USA: Duckworth, Warren Press Trump Health Nominee Dr. Oz on Dangerous Anti-Abortion Views

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Illinois Tammy Duckworth

    February 13, 2025

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Today, U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) pressed Dr. Mehmet Oz, President Trump’s nominee for the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), on his hostile anti-abortion record as his nominee process begins. If confirmed as CMS Administrator, Dr. Oz would be in charge of Medicare, Medicaid and Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage, exercising broad authority over reproductive health care access.

“Leaving the issue of women’s reproductive freedom to the whims of local officials — a position you have consistently expressed is dangerous and has already produced a patchwork of abortion laws across the country, creating legal confusion, harms to public health, and vast disparities in access to care,” wrote the Senators.

Dr. Oz has a hostile record on abortion that raises serious concerns about how he might use his role at CMS to slash or eliminate access to critical reproductive health care. Dr. Oz praised the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, has described himself as “100% pro-life” and has stated that he looks “forward to supporting” anti-abortion policy. Notably, he also said that a woman’s decision to get an abortion should be up to “women, doctors [and] local political leaders [emphasis added]”—a particularly concerning comment on women’s health.

“Given the role CMS plays in shaping reproductive health care access, the CMS Administrator will cause grave damage if they do not stand firmly in defense of women’s reproductive rights. Yet throughout your career, you have staunchly opposed abortion, which makes it difficult to believe you would take women’s sexual and reproductive health seriously,” the Senators concluded.

Given Dr. Oz’s alarming record on reproductive rights, the lawmakers demanded answers to a series of questions about how he would use CMS authorities to impact reproductive health care access if confirmed to serve as its Administrator.

The letter came just before the Senate vote on Robert F. Kennedy’s confirmation to serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In his confirmation hearing, Kennedy said: “I agree with President Trump that every abortion is a tragedy…I’m going to implement his policies.”

In his first three weeks in office, Donald Trump has already worked to roll back women’s reproductive rights. Trump signed a slew of executive orders undoing Biden-era protections and reinstating harmful policies implemented in his first term. The Trump Administration also scrubbed critical information from government websites, eliminated HHS’s Interagency Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access and revoked guidance directing CMS and HHS to increase access to abortion services.

  • MIL-OSI USA: SCHUMER STATEMENT ON 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF 10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION’S REACTIVATION AT FORT DRUM

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New York Charles E Schumer

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today released the following statement on the 40th anniversary of the 10th Mountain Division’s reactivation at Fort Drum in the North Country and the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Battle of Riva Ridge in which the 10th Mountain Division seized German positions on Riva Ridge, paving the way for Italy’s liberation during World War II:

“Fort Drum is woven into the very fabric of the North Country, and today marks the 40th anniversary of the 10th Mountain Division’s reactivation at Fort Drum on February 13, 1985. Since World War II, the 10th Mountain Division has played a pivotal role in US contingency operations and our response to global conflicts. For more than 20 years, the 10th Mountain Division has been the most regularly deployed unit in the US Army, cementing its reputation as one of the most elite and readily deployable combat units in the US Armed Forces. From the European theater in WWII to the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, to supporting Operation Atlantic Resolve, bolstering NATO and the Transatlantic Alliance in the face of Russian aggression, the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division have time and time again answered the call to duty in theaters of operation across the globe, providing mission-critical support to protect our national security interests and support US allies and partners.

“Indeed, the 10th Mountain Division’s significance transcends its battlefield accomplishments. Its focus on mobility, rapid deployment, and leadership in modernizing counter-UAS and integrating multi-domain capabilities in training for large-scale combat operations will help build the Army of the future, allowing America to continue to serve as a powerful force for peace and stability around the world. With the activation of elements of the 2nd Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF) at Fort Drum starting this summer, it is becoming clearer every day that the future of our military will depend on Fort Drum and the North Country. I was proud to push for the selection of Fort Drum to base the 2nd MDTF and the hundreds of millions of dollars I’ve secured for infrastructure improvements at Fort Drum throughout my career, and will continue fighting to ensure that the heroic men and women serving at Fort Drum have what they need to be mission ready and defend our country. Climb to Glory!”

Washington, D.C.–The United States Senate today confirmed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to serve as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by a vote of 52-48.  In a speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) spoke to Mr. Kennedy’s vision for HHS and his commitment to prioritizing consumer choice and transparency.

“When his nomination for the role of Secretary of HHS was announced, Mr. Kennedy stated, ‘We have a generational opportunity to bring together the greatest minds in science, medicine, industry, and government to put an end to the chronic disease epidemic.  I agree with him.  We have got to get into the business of making America healthy again,” said Crapo.  “He will bring a fresh perspective to health care, prioritizing consumer choice, information transparency and early interventions to strengthen the well-being of all Americans. . . . I encourage my colleagues to support his nomination.”

Mr. Kennedy’s nomination was previously reported favorably out of the Senate Finance Committee by a bipartisan vote of 14 to 13.

Read Senator Crapo’s full remarks below:

    “Thank you, Mr. President.

“I rise today in support of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and to urge my colleagues to vote in favor of his confirmation.

“Contrary to the attacks that have constantly been made on him, he has made it very clear that he will support safe vaccinations and just wants to see that research is done and done well.

“When his nomination for the role of Secretary of HHS was announced, Mr. Kennedy stated, ‘We have a generational opportunity to bring together the greatest minds in science, medicine, industry, and government to put an end to the chronic disease epidemic.’

“I agree with him.  We have got to get into the business of making America healthy again.

“Mr. Kennedy’s dedication to this commitment has been apparent throughout his nomination process.

“He will bring a fresh perspective to health care, prioritizing consumer choice, information transparency and early interventions to strengthen the well-being of all Americans.

“He has been responsive to a wide variety of questions from Members on both sides of the aisle, appearing before two Committees and answering hundreds of questions for the record.

“Not to mention going through the extensive vetting process of the Finance Committee, which is the most extensive vetting process that any candidate for the Administration goes through in the Senate.

“While some of my colleagues continue to question his financial agreements, Mr. Kennedy met and then exceeded the requirements set forth by the Office of Government Ethics.

“I encourage a strong ‘yes’ vote for Robert F. Kennedy to be the next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Crapo Backs Bicameral Legislation to Support Family-Run Timber Industry

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Idaho Mike Crapo

Washington, D.C.–U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) joined Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and Angus King (I-Maine) and U.S. Representatives Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-Pennsylvania) and Jared Golden (D-Maine) to reintroduce the Future Logging Careers Act to support America’s family-run timber industry.

“Family businesses are the way of life in many agricultural communities and logging is no exception,” said Crapo.  “Giving our young people the ability to participate in family-led training bolsters the logging industry and brings much-needed natural resources into the marketplace.  The Future Logging Careers Act would offer today’s young adults a chance to be tomorrow’s industry leaders while also restoring health and resiliency to our forests.”

This legislation would allow teenage members of logging families to gain critical, hands-on experience in the trade so they may carry on the family business.  The Future Logging Careers Act would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to allow 16- and 17-year-olds to work in certain mechanized logging operations under parental supervision.  Similar exemptions already exist for farming families.

Additional co-sponsors of the legislation include U.S. Senators Tim Sheehy (R-Montana), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and John Cornyn (R-Texas).

  • MIL-OSI USA: Crapo: Enough is Enough–It is Past Time to Get Our Fiscal House in Order

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Idaho Mike Crapo

Washington, D.C.–U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and senior member of the Senate Budget Committee, voted to advance the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Resolution out of the Senate Budget Committee for full Senate consideration.  The Resolution passed 11-10.

“By committing to paying for this ambitious agenda, Senate Republicans have said enough is enough with reckless fiscal policy.  It is past time to get our fiscal house in order,” said Crapo.  “It is time to stop the politics of fear, admit that we have got to control our spending and let us get on with trying to do the critical work of restoring our border security, restoring our national security and unleashing the energy potential of this country so we can again regain our preeminent posture as the strongest economy and strongest nation in this world.”

Click HERE or the image above to view Senator Crapo’s remarks.

Text of Crapo’s remarks, as prepared for delivery, is below:

“As part of its regular duties and to execute the mandate given to Republicans by the American voter, the Senate Budget Committee will mark up a budget resolution for Fiscal Year 2025.  This is not the end; it is the beginning.

“On his first day in office in January 2021, President Joe Biden blew open the southern border by using executive authority to rescind a number of successful Trump Administration policies.  His open border policies brought more than 10 million illegal immigrants into our country.  President Biden failed to uphold the law with regard to border security.  While President Trump has reinstated many of these important policies through executive order, the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Resolution implements lasting security for American citizens.

“Additionally, this resolution restores America’s military power to counteract Russia, China and other adversaries around the world.  This work, combined with President Trump’s ‘America First’ foreign policy, will keep America the preeminent global power and shore up our national defense.

“To begin the process of returning to fiscal sensibility, the Finance Committee’s instruction in this budget unlocks our ability to reverse a specific costly rule from the prior Administration that threatens patients’ access to long-term care in rural communities.  Not only will this effort provide savings for our shared priorities in this legislation, but it will also serve as a commitment to reform our broken health care system, which too often relies on ineffective structures that fail patients, providers and taxpayers.

“I want to make it clear that if we receive this instruction, the Finance Committee’s focus will be on this single provision, not on opening up the tax bill or other issues or other efforts to try to reform other parts of our health care system.  I will do my best to keep us focused on this provision with this instruction.

“Finally, by committing to paying for this ambitious agenda, Senate Republicans have said enough is enough with reckless fiscal policy.  It is past time to get our fiscal house in order.  While more will be necessary to bring America back to living within its means, this resolution is a superb first step.

“It is very obvious the criticisms of what we are trying to do, once again, rely on the politics of fear.  Saying that we are going to hurt every single person in America except ‘those rich people’ and claiming that we want to give tax cuts to the wealthy.

“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that was referenced already has a $2.6 trillion impact on people making less than $400,000 per year.  The vast majority we are talking about are not the wealthy, but those in our middle- and lower-income brackets, and our pass-through entities, or small businesses, across this country.

“It is time to stop the politics of fear, admit that we have got to control our spending and let us get on with trying to do the critical work of restoring our border security, restoring our national security and unleashing the energy potential of this country so we can again regain our preeminent posture as the strongest economy and strongest nation in this world.”

    US Senate News:

Washington, D.C.–U.S. Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada), Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) reintroduced the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Reservation Water Rights Settlement Act, which would allow the Tribes to finally collect over $5 million in interest they are owed for the 2009 water rights settlement.

“This much-needed fix takes the next step in upholding the federal government’s full interest terms of the 2009 settlement with the Duck Valley Reservation,” said Crapo.  “The Senate unanimously advanced the measure in the last Congress and must do so again expeditiously.  The House should follow suit so we can correct this error as soon as possible.”

“It is absurd that the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Reservation have had to go nearly two decades without millions of dollars in interest they are owed,” said Cortez Masto.  “My commonsense, bipartisan legislation fixes this years-old oversight and secures funding that these Tribes deserve.”

“The Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Reservation deserve the millions of dollars in interest they are owed,” said Rosen.  “I’m proud to help introduce this bipartisan legislation to ensure they finally receive this payment after a nearly twenty-year delay.”

“The Shoshone-Paiute Tribes’ water rights settlement mistakenly excluded interest payments, unjustly cutting these communities short,” said Risch.  “I’m proud to join my colleagues in introducing legislation to correct this error and provide the Tribes the proper interest they are owed.”

The bill passed the Senate unanimously in the last Congress, but did not advance in the U.S. House of Representatives.

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Idaho Mike Crapo

Washington, D.C.–U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) joined Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho) to introduce the Simplifying Subcontracting Act to reduce complexity in federal government contracting and help more small businesses and entrepreneurs pursue contracts.

“Qualified small businesses and entrepreneurs deserve the same access to federal government contracts as larger entities that currently dominate the contracting market,” said Crapo.  “Simplified, clearer language will improve their access to the federal contracting application process.”

“Small businesses are vital to our economy but are often left out in federal government contracting due to overly complicated, bureaucratic language,” said Risch.  “The Simplifying Subcontracting Act requires certain federal government contracts to use plain language, enabling more small businesses to compete for these contracts.”

The Simplifying Subcontracting Acttrue to its name, is a simple, one-page bill that would require federal government contracts to use straightforward language when subcontracting work is given to small businesses.  This legislation mirrors the Plain Writing Act of 2010

Additional co-sponsors include U.S. Senators John Kennedy (R-Louisiana), Todd Young (R-Indiana) and John Hickenlooper (D-Colorado).

  • MIL-OSI USA: Merkley, Wyden Raise the Alarm Over NIH Funding Cuts that Derail Lifesaving Research, Cost Lives and Jobs in Oregon

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore)
    February 13, 2025
Washington, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden joined an effort led by Washington State’s U.S. Senator Patty Murray in expressing serious alarm over the Trump Administration’s threats to cut the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) federal funding to research universities?and institutions across America and in Oregon, including groundbreaking medical and health research being done at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), University of Oregon (UO), Oregon State University (OSU), Portland State University (PSU), and many others in the state.
As the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, NIH plays a critical role in sustaining the research infrastructure necessary for scientific breakthroughs, infectious disease prevention, and medical technology innovation. The cuts would set us back generations in finding lifesaving cures and treatments to illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, and Parkinson’s, and stopping medical trials would cost lives.
Additionally, the Trump Administration’s NIH funding cuts could cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars and threaten the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of workers. Nationally, NIH research supported more than 412,000 jobs and fueled nearly $93 billion in new economic activity in Fiscal Year 2023, while costing less than 1 percent of the federal budget. In Oregon, NIH invested $417 million, which directly supported more than 5,000 jobs and nearly a billion dollars in economic activity, and indirectly supported over 17,000 jobs in Oregon’s broader bioscience economy.
The entire Democratic caucus sent the letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. urgently detailing how these steps the Trump Administration is taking would have a catastrophic impact on research institutions and our economy.
“The Trump Administration has left researchers, universities, and health systems with great uncertainty about whether they can continue to support entire research programs and patient clinical trials across the country. Institutions and grantees nationwide are dealing with an unprecedented external communications “pause” enacted by new leadership at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the lack of transparency regarding the Administration’s illegal funding freeze, and the uncertainty of how new Executive Orders would be applied to their critical work. These actions resulted in NIH freezing grant reviews and cancelling advisory meetings, delaying critical funding that scientists need to continue advancing new cures and treatments. These disruptions do not just slow research—they cost lives,” the Senators wrote.
Last week, the NIH announced it would set the maximum reimbursement rate for indirect costs to 15 percent—creating a serious funding shortfall for research institutions of all types across the country. This move won’t produce cost savings—it will just shift costs to states that can’t afford to pay the difference. Importantly, this action by the Trump administration is illegal—Congress’ bipartisan Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Bill prohibits modifications to NIH’s indirect costs.
“This change to NIH’s indirect cost rate represents an indiscriminate funding cut that will be nothing short of catastrophic for the lifesaving research that patients and families are counting on. The Administration’s new policy means that research will come to a halt, sick kids may not get the treatment they need, and clinical trials may shut down abruptly,” the Senators continued.
On Monday, a federal judge in Boston temporarily blocked the NIH rate cut and set a hearing for February 21st, but the Senators are pressing the administration to abandon the proposed cuts full stop.
“Our standing as a world leader in funding and producing new medical and scientific innovations has been put at risk by these recent actions from the Trump Administration. We urge you to stop playing political games with the lifesaving work of the NIH and to allow NIH research to continue uninterrupted,” the Senators concluded.
Merkley and Wyden signed the letter led by Murray alongside the entire Senate Democratic caucus: Senators Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Chris Coons (D-DE), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Dick Durbin (D-IL), John Fetterman (D-PA), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Andy Kim (D-NJ), Angus King (I-ME), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Ed Markey (D-MA), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Gary Peters (D-MI), Jack Reed (D-RI), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Tina Smith (D-MN), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Mark Warner (D-VA), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Peter Welch (D-VT), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).
The letter is available HERE and the full text is below.
    Dear Secretary Kennedy,
We write to express our serious concern with the Trump Administration’s recent decisions that threaten to undermine the nation’s biomedical research infrastructure and set us back generations. The steps the Trump Administration has taken will create a serious funding shortfall for research institutions nationwide, threaten to undermine progress on lifesaving scientific advancements, could cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars, and threaten the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of workers.
As the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, NIH plays a critical role in sustaining the research infrastructure necessary for scientific breakthroughs in cancer treatment, infectious disease prevention, and medical technology innovation, among many others. President Trump has wreaked havoc on the nation’s biomedical research system in recent weeks. In his first several days in office, President Trump imposed a hiring freeze, communications freeze, ban on travel, and cancellation of grant review and advisory panels that are necessary to advance research. While some of these efforts have been reversed, they continue to cause confusion and miscommunication among researchers and recipients of NIH funds.
Just last week, NIH announced an illegal plan to cap indirect cost rates that research institutions rely on. In capping indirect cost rates at 15 percent for NIH-funded grants, this policy would cut funding essential for conducting research, such as operating and maintaining laboratories, equipment, and research facilities. This change to NIH’s indirect cost rate represents an indiscriminate funding cut that will be nothing short of catastrophic for the lifesaving research that patients and families are counting on. The Administration’s new policy means that research will come to a halt, sick kids may not get the treatment they need, and clinical trials may shut down abruptly.
These confusing and harmful policy changes threaten patient safety. The strength of the American research enterprise – recognized as the best in the world – is built on Congress’ bipartisan commitment to supporting essential research infrastructure. This funding, which Congress has long appropriated on a bipartisan basis, fuels groundbreaking medical discoveries and cements the United States’ position as the global leader in biomedical research.
In addition to the stifling impact on discovering new cures and ripping away treatment from those who need it, changes to NIH policy and communications threaten jobs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with everyone from custodians, to research trainees, to scientists facing potential layoffs. NIH research supported more than 412,000 jobs and fueled nearly $93 billion in new economic activity in Fiscal Year 2023. Every dollar the NIH invests in research generates almost $2.50 in economic activity. These reckless policy changes not only threaten biomedical innovation and research, but also the livelihoods of thousands of workers in every state across the nation.
The Trump Administration has left researchers, universities, and health systems with great uncertainty about whether they can continue to support entire research programs and patient clinical trials across the country. These disruptions do not just slow research – they cost lives.
The NIH plays a critical role in our nation’s efforts to fund scientific advancements that improve health and save lives. Our standing as a world leader in funding and producing new medical and scientific innovations has been put at risk by these recent actions from the Trump Administration. We urge you to stop playing political games with the lifesaving work of the NIH and to allow NIH research to continue uninterrupted.
    Sincerely,

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Murkowski Announces Extended Deadline for FY26 Appropriations Requests

    US Senate News:

    02.13.25
Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) announced an extended deadline for appropriations requests from Alaskans for programmatic and Congressional Directed Spending for the Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26). The appropriations request portal on her website opened on January 3, 2025, and will now remain open until Friday, February 28, 2025, at 11:59 AKST.
CLICK HERE FOR INFORMATION ON SENATOR MURKOWSKI’S FY26 APPROPRIATIONS REQUEST PROCESS
Murkowski is making the Appropriations Request Form for FY26 available on her website for interested Alaskans. The FY26 appropriations process includes opportunities to request both programmatic funding and Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS), which allows Alaskans to identify and receive federal assistance for their local and state-specific needs.
The CDS process accounts for no more than one percent of federal discretionary spending and does not increase overall spending levels. Without this process, many of the federal funds now headed for Alaska would go to other states based on decisions made by unelected bureaucrats in federal departments and agencies, rather than being negotiated and determined by publicly-elected representatives.
The annual appropriations process is lengthy, with uncertain timing, and there is no guarantee that CDS requests will be included in federal spending bills. Due to nuanced eligibility criteria and limited available funds, many requests will not move forward, and not all projects chosen to advance will ultimately receive funding.
The federal budget is currently funded through March 14, 2025, creating uncertainty for FY25 requests that have been included in the Senate’s FY25 appropriations bills. If you submitted a project for FY25 that has been included in one of the FY25 appropriations bills, we recommend you reapply for FY26. Prior submissions do not automatically carry over and must be resubmitted for consideration. This will ensure that your project will remain in consideration as Congress works to finalize the FY25 appropriations process and turns to FY26.
Submitted proposals will be considered by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on a bipartisan basis through established criteria. To apply, you must be Alaskan and your project must be in Alaska. The deadline for requests is Friday, February 28, 2025, at 11:59 PM AKST.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Dr. Paul Introduces Legislation to Remove Federal Government Restrictions on Paducah, Kentucky Property

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Kentucky Rand Paul

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

    February 13, 2025

     Contact: Press_Paul@paul.senate.gov, 202-224-4343

Empowers city officials to fully transfer the property to the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) introduced legislation that will remove a National Park Service (NPS) restriction imposed on Paducah, Kentucky, property. By removing this federal government restriction on land the city currently owns, the legislation would empower local officials to fully transfer the property to the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club and allow the organization to renovate and improve their facilities.

“For over sixty years, the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club has provided invaluable services to the young people of Paducah, helping to shape the next generation with education, mentorship, and community support. The federal government shouldn’t stand in the way of their efforts to improve and expand their facilities. This legislation will remove burdensome restrictions and allow the City of Paducah to transfer this property so that the Boys and Girls Club can continue its mission without federal interference,” said Dr. Paul.

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is an original cosponsor of the legislation in the Senate.

“I’m proud to partner with Congressman Comer and Senator Paul on legislation that will greenlight the City of Paducah’s proposal to transfer this property to Oscar Cross Boys & Girls Club,” said Senator McConnell. “This organization does tremendous work for Kentucky’s children, and our bill eliminates unnecessary barriers that have stood in the way of new, supportive spaces for young people in Paducah to learn and grow.”

U.S. Representative James Comer (R-KY-01) introduced the House companion bill.

“The Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club of Paducah has been a force for good in the Paducah-McCracken County community for over sixty years. Unnecessary restrictions imposed by the federal government have stood in the way of this local organization’s efforts to improve their facilities and offer even more critical programs to our youth. After collaborating with the city of Paducah, National Park Service, and other stakeholders, I am proud to introduce legislation today that will remove burdensome federal restrictions, empower local officials, and enable the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club to make long sought improvements that will benefit the community for decades to come. I look forward to working with Senator Rand Paul and Senator Mitch McConnell to get this bill across the finish line and to the President’s desk,” said Congressman James Comer.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued the following statement:
“I remain skeptical about the Trump administration’s approach to its management of the USDA, which has included the chaotic, illegal freezing of programs that farmers rely on. However, I believe Brooke Rollins is willing to work hard on behalf of farmers. At her confirmation hearing, Mrs. Rollins committed to me that she would work to ensure USDA programs better support small farmers and that she would make school meals healthier by reducing the amount of harmful ultra-processed foods that are served to our children. Mrs. Rollins also agreed to meet with me and a group of farmers to discuss Packers and Stockyards Act regulations as well as the benefits of state laws such as California’s Prop 12. I look forward to working with Secretary Rollins to create a fair safety net for small and specialty crop farmers, and I look forward to our meeting.”

Source: United States Senator for Texas Ted Cruz

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, introduced the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act. The bill makes it a crime to flee from agents or officers in the performance of their duties. Named in honor of Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez, Jr., who died in the line of duty while pursuing a group of illegal aliens near Mission, Texas, it ensures those who endanger law enforcement are held accountable.
Upon introduction, Sen. Cruz said, “This legislation honors the sacrifice of Agent Raul Gonzalez, Jr., who lost his life pursuing individuals evading capture. It sends a clear message that if you endanger American lives, you will face serious consequences. This bill is a critical step toward protecting our communities and ensuring criminals can no longer exploit past failures.”
This bill is cosponsored by Sens. Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Jim Justice (R-W.Va.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.).
Companion legislation was introduced by U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.-06) and passed in the House.
    Read the bill text here.
    BACKGROUND
Sen. Cruz previously introduced the legislation in 2023.
On December 7, 2022, Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez, Jr. died in the line of duty after his ATV crashed while he pursued illegal aliens who were fleeing capture. Agent Gonzalez honorably served his country for over a decade.
The Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act would permanently prohibit any illegal alien who flees from Border Patrol from ever receiving any legal immigration status in the United States. Additionally, any person who flees from Border Patrol, or law enforcement assisting Border Patrol, would face up to two years in prison. If someone is injured during pursuit, the sentencing range would increase to 5 to 20 years. Finally, if death results from the pursuit, the defendant could face up to life in prison.
The Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act also requires the Department of Justice to report to Congress about how often they are prosecuting illegal aliens for violating the proposed Act.
Senator Cruz, Senator John Cornyn, and Congresswoman De La Cruz also introduced legislation to honor Agent Gonzalez by naming a post office after him in McAllen, Texas.
The National Border Patrol Council, which represents the men and women of Border Patrol, has endorsed the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Murray Leads Entire Democratic Caucus in Raising Alarm Over Trump Admin Pushing Illegal Indiscriminate Funding Cuts to NIH, Derailing Lifesaving Research

    US Senate News:

ICYMI: Senator Murray Slams Indirect Cost Rate for NIH as Massive Indiscriminate Cut, Setting Back Progress on Lifesaving Research

NIH research supported more than 412,000 jobs and fueled nearly $93 billion in new economic activity in Fiscal Year 2023

Washington state receives $1.29 billion in NIH funding that supports nearly 12,000 jobs and nearly $3 billion in economic activity; STATE BY STATE analysis HERE of total NIH funding, jobs supported, and economic activity supported through NIH research

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and a senior member and former Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, led the entire Senate Democratic Caucus in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. expressing serious alarm over the Trump Administration’s recent decisions that threaten to undermine America’s biomedical research infrastructure and set us back generations. The steps the Trump administration has taken would create a serious funding shortfall for research institutions nationwide, threaten to undermine progress on lifesaving scientific advancements, and could cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars and threaten the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of workers.

“As the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, NIH plays a critical role in sustaining the research infrastructure necessary for scientific breakthroughs in cancer treatment, infectious disease prevention, and medical technology innovation, among many others. President Trump has wreaked havoc on the nation’s biomedical research system in recent weeks. In his first several days in office, President Trump imposed a hiring freeze, communications freeze, ban on travel, and cancellation of grant review and advisory panels that are necessary to advance research. While some of these efforts have been reversed, they continue to cause confusion and miscommunication among researchers and recipients of NIH funds,” Senator Murray and the Members wrote.

Last week, the NIH announced it would set the maximum reimbursement rate for indirect costs to 15 percent—creating a serious funding shortfall for research institutions of all types across the country. This move would dismantle the biomedical research system and stifle the development of new cures for disease. It won’t produce cost savings—it will just shift costs to states who can’t afford to pay the difference.

The Administration’s new policy means that research will come to a halt, sick kids may not get the treatment they need, and clinical trials may shut down abruptly,” the senators wrote. On Monday, a federal judge in Boston temporarily blocked the NIH rate cut and set a hearing for February 21st.

The senators’ letter points out that, in addition to the stifling impact on discovering new cures and ripping away treatment from those who need it, changes to NIH policy and communications threaten jobs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. NIH research supported more than 412,000 jobs and fueled nearly $93 billion in new economic activity in Fiscal Year 2023 and every dollar the NIH invests in research generates almost $2.50 in economic activity.

These disruptions do not just slow research—they cost lives,” the senators continued.

“Our standing as a world leader in funding and producing new medical and scientific innovations has been put at risk by these recent actions from the Trump Administration. We urge you to stop playing political games with the lifesaving work of the NIH and to allow NIH research to continue uninterrupted.”

The letter was signed by the entire Senate Democratic caucus: in addition to Senator Murray, Senators Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Chris Coons (D-DE), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Dick Durbin (D-IL), John Fetterman (D-PA), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Andy Kim (D-NJ), Angus King (I-ME), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Gary Peters (D-MI), Jack Reed (D-RI), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Tina Smith (D-MN), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Mark Warner (D-VA), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Peter Welch (D-VT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Ron Wyden (D-OR) signed onto the letter.

As a longtime appropriator and former Chair of the Senate HELP Committee, Murray has long fought to boost biomedical research, strengthen public health infrastructure, and make health care more affordable and accessible. Over her years as a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, she has secured billions of dollars in increases for biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health, and during her time as Chair of the HELP Committee she established the new ARPA-H research agency as part of her PREVENT Pandemics Act to advance some of the most cutting-edge research in the field. Senator Murray was also the lead Democratic negotiator of the bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act, which delivered a major federal investment to boost NIH research, among many other investments.

A PDF of the letter is available HERE and the full text is below.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Murray: Trump Must Reverse Firing of VA Researchers Across the Country, Threatens to Decimate Lifesaving Work on Veterans’ Medical Care, Prosthetics, and More

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Washington State Patty Murray

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and a senior member and former Chair of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, responded to reports that researchers at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are right now being fired by the Trump administration. The administration is refusing to honor researchers’ three-year “Not to Exceed” term limits (NTEs) by rolling them over as is standard and is instead immediately dismissing these researchers—who are in the middle of research on topics including mental health, alcohol and opioid withdrawal, cancer treatments, burn pit exposure, prosthetics, diabetic ulcers, and so much else.

“The Trump administration is right now firing researchers at VA who do lifesaving work for our veterans—research to prevent veteran suicide, build lifechanging prosthetics, address opioid addiction, and more. This move will effectively mean the end of VA research as we know it in red and blue states. Trump and Elon need to reverse course on this elimination of VA research positions immediately—this callous across-the-board firing threatens to decimate so much of the lifesaving research our veterans depend on.

“I’m hearing from longtime VA researchers in my home state of Washington who are right now being told to immediately stop their research and pack their bags—not because their work isn’t desperately needed, but because Trump and Elon have decided to fire these researchers on a whim. Americans should understand by now when it comes to these kinds of indiscriminate cuts and arbitrary mass firings—Trump and Elon have no idea what they are doing, nor do they care who they hurt in the process. Our veterans deserve the very best medical care and I am already demanding that VA provide me information about who made these decisions and much more—I’m not going to stand by and let Trump and Elon destroy VA medical research.”

According to VA, in fiscal year 2024, there were 102 active research sites nationwide, with 3,685 active principal investigators who led 7,278 active funded research projects involving teams of researchers. In addition, VA investigators authored or coauthored 11,732 published research articles.

Senator Murray was the first woman to join the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the first woman to chair the Committee—as the daughter of a World War II veteran, supporting veterans and their families has always been an important priority for her. Senator Murray has fought throughout her career for increased benefits for veterans, housing assistance, better access to veterans’ clinics throughout Washington state, and more accountability from the VA.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Murray: Trump Blocking Funding Will Kill Good-Paying Energy Jobs and Raise Families’ Energy Bills

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Washington State Patty Murray

Murray: “In choking off tens of billions of dollars in energy investments, Trump is threatening to kill thousands of good-paying American jobs and raise energy costs for households across the country.”

Senator Murray hosts press call to detail how Trump blocking energy investments is hurting communities in every part of the country

    ***WATCH: PRESS CALL HERE***

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Ranking Member of the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, hosted a press call to underscore how President Trump continuing to block key energy investments threatens to raise families’ energy bills, derail key energy projects, and kill good-paying jobs in communities across the country. Senator Murray was joined by David Turk, former Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, and Joe Nguyen, Director of the Washington state Department of Commerce.

“The guy who swore up and down on the campaign trail that he would lower people’s energy costs is now working to raise them. And an administration that says it wants to ‘restore energy dominance’ is now working to kill domestic energy projects and the thousands of American jobs they are creating,” said Senator Murray. “This funding freeze—which may very well not be a freeze but a permanent rollback—is bad for families and it’s bad for workers. And it is also bad for American businesses who have inked contracts to create new battery plants, produce sustainable aviation fuel, lay down new transmission lines, construct new energy plants, and so much more—and who are now left wondering whether the federal government is going to honor its commitments.”

“Another estimate said that the average American consumer is going to pay almost $500 more per year if these kinds of programs—the tax incentives to the loan programs—don’t go forward. And I think that’s a conservative estimate,” said David Turk, who recently served as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy. “I really want to underscore that chaos and confusion and uncertainty is not our friend. If you talk to any investor, if you talk to any CEO, the last thing they need—the last thing they want—is chaos, confusion, uncertainty about what should be no brainers. If the government makes a commitment, if we get to conditional commitment with a loan program recipient, that’s the government’s credibility. That’s the American people’s credibility on the line to follow through and make sure that we are providing that certainty for investment.”

“It was 27 degrees in West Seattle this morning, and even colder in other parts of the state. The hundreds of millions of dollars threatened today by Trump’s political games hurts already overburdened communities the most, especially low-income families, rural towns, and our small businesses. Washingtonians deserve better than the games the Trump administration is playing,” said Joe Nguyen, Director of the Washington state Department of Commerce.

On his first day in office, President Trump signed an executive order to illegally halt funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) from going out the door to communities and recipients counting on the funding. Hundreds of billions of dollars are still being held up under Trump’s directives—and it’s jeopardizing all manner of energy projects and programs communities are counting on.

In the years since the IIJA and IRA were signed into law, over $211 billion in private sector investment in clean energy and tech manufacturing has been announced nationwide—with 232k+ jobs announced and nearly 80% of those investments made in Republican-held districts. The president’s freeze puts all these gains at serious risk.

Senator Murray’s remarks, as delivered, are below:

“Thanks everyone for joining this call today. I’m really glad to be here with David Turk, who recently served as Deputy Energy Secretary, and Joe Nguyen, Director of Washington state’s Department of Commerce, to talk about how President Trump and Elon Musk are holding up tens of billions of dollars in energy investments nationwide—putting jobs at risk and raising energy costs for families.

“We are now well into the fourth week of President Trump’s illegal—and deeply harmful—funding freeze.

Trump is still blocking funding that we secured in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, among much else, from going out the doors. It is, of course, illegal for a president to unilaterally decide to block funding.

“As I’ve said many times: presidents don’t just get to pick and choose what laws they feel like following.

“But Trump blocking funding is not merely illegal. It also devastating for communities like the ones I represent—who are counting on these resources, who’ve hired folks, are relying on this funding to, for example, lower their monthly energy bill, and who, in many cases, have already inked contracts.

“Today, we are talking about the energy investments Trump is blocking—and I want to say from the outset this is just one slice of the vast pot of funding he is holding up.

“Trump’s freeze is holding up funding for: rebuilding roads and bridges, new clean school buses, wildfire prevention efforts, assistance for farmers, replacing old water pipes, investments in our national security, and so much more.

“But today I wanted to zero in on what’s going on at the Department of Energy.

“Because make no mistake: in choking off tens of billions of dollars in energy investments, Trump is threatening to kill thousands of good-paying American jobs and raise energy costs for households across the country.

“When Congress passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, we made historic investments to—among a whole lot else—create good-paying clean energy jobs, spur innovation, strengthen American manufacturing, and lower energy costs for families.

“We provided funding for families to upgrade their homes and save big on their energy bills. We delivered resources to build new battery manufacturing plants, construct cutting-edge hydrogen hubs, boost our nuclear power capabilities, and increase domestic production of critical minerals we absolutely need.

“As you can imagine, a lot of good new jobs have been created in the process—and we’re really just beginning to feel the full benefits.

“A quarter of a million clean energy jobs have been created since we passed the IRA and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. In Washington state, the new Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub alone is set to create 10,000 jobs. The Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office awards alone will support at least 50,000 good jobs across the country.

“But Trump is putting these domestic jobs at risk—which plays right into the hands of our competitors, like China.

“And he is simultaneously threatening to rip up programs we’ve created that are lowering people’s energy costs.

“Right now, Trump is putting funding for the Home Energy Rebates Program in serious jeopardy. We are talking about funding for families to make upgrades that save them on their monthly energy bill. Funding for you to buy energy efficient appliances and to retrofit your home so that cold air stays out in the winter and hot air stays out in the summer. These programs aren’t just important in tackling the climate crisis—they are saving families money.

“They provide households up to $14,000 in rebates to make upgrades and lower their energy bills—and they are saving American households up to $1 billion every single year.

“The Weatherization Assistance Program, for example, saves households $372 on average each year! But again—Trump has put it on the chopping block.

“There’s no need to dance around it: the guy who swore up and down on the campaign trail that he would lower people’s energy costs is now working to raise them.

“And an administration that says it wants to ‘restore energy dominance’ is now working to kill domestic energy projects and the thousands of American jobs they are creating!

“This funding freeze—which may very well not be a freeze but a permanent rollback—is bad for families and it’s bad for workers. And it is also bad for American businesses who have inked contracts to create new battery plants, produce sustainable aviation fuel, lay down new transmission lines, construct new energy plants, and so much more—and who are now left wondering whether the federal government is going to honor its commitments.

“That uncertainty alone risks jobs and investments—and will hurt local economies everywhere.

“It was recently reported, for example, that Trump and Musk are looking at cancelling even finalized loans provided by the Energy Department’s Loan Programs Office. That, of course, puts jobs at risk and puts workers’ livelihoods and businesses’ bottom lines in jeopardy.

“But what we are seeing is also a situation rife with potential conflicts of interest and corruption—which is another huge part of the story when it comes to Trump and Musk blocking funding.

“Just one example: back in 2010, when Tesla wasn’t doing too hot, Elon Musk secured a half billion-dollar loan from the Department of Energy. That loan boosted the company—and Elon Musk—and helped them become what they are today.

“Fast forward to now—Elon Musk is raiding agencies, cutting off funding, cancelling contracts, and the Energy Department is apparently looking to cancel loans it has made to his electric vehicle competitors.

“The obvious question then is Elon Musk going to cut off loans that are helping Tesla’s competitors create jobs and build their business right here in America?

“There is so much at stake—and what is painfully clear is that Trump’s illegal funding freeze is causing chaos and confusion. It’s putting these projects and jobs at risk—and will take money out of families’ pockets—and it has got to end.

“The court decisions we’ve gotten so far have affirmed what we have known all along: Trump does not have the power to steal approved funding from the American people.

“But the relief the orders should provide is, for now, only temporary—and in many cases, the funding is still frozen.

“Now, DOE may say they’ve just developed a new process for thoroughly reviewing all programs and payments but make no mistake: this process is meant to have the same effect—it is a freeze by a different name and the funds remain frozen.

“What needs to happen is Donald Trump and Elon Musk must end the freeze and revoke their orders to choke off these investments.

“As I’ve said before: if Donald Trump wants to roll back programs that are lowering people’s energy bills, he can come to Congress and win the votes he needs to do it.

“If Donald Trump wants to gut funding that is creating good-paying energy jobs all across the country, he can come to Congress and win the votes he needs to do it.

“That’s why I am here today to sound the alarm and protect critical programs American families rely on and support. You don’t just get to rip up contracts and block funding owed to the American people.

“Now, I want to turn it over to David Turk, who I’m so glad could join us, to talk a bit more about what this freeze is doing.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Pressed by Sen. Murray, McMahon Can’t Name a Single Requirement of Landmark Education Law; Murray Grills McMahon on Trump Plans to Dismantle Education Department, DOGE Access to Sensitive Student Data

    US Senate News:

***WATCH: Senator Murray questions Education Secretary nominee Linda McMahon***

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member and former chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), pressed Linda McMahon, President Trump’s nominee to serve as Education Secretary, on how she would approach the job of leading our nation’s Department of Education as President Trump calls the Department a “con job,” says he wants it closed “immediately”, hopes McMahon will “put herself out of a job,” and as Trump, Elon Musk, and DOGE have already begun illegally gutting the Department.

Senator Murray began by pressing McMahon on whether she will ensure enacted funding gets out to serve students as directed and on DOGE staffers setting up camp at the Department of Education, where they have reportedly fed sensitive personal and financial data from the department into artificial intelligence software. “They’ve already been given access to highly-sensitive student data, and have already started holding back money that Congress decided, on a bipartisan basis, was needed to help our schools and students,” Murray said.

“We are also hearing, as you know, about an Executive Order coming any day that will seek to dismantle the Department of Education. These are bipartisan laws–you indicated that you understood that… if confirmed, do you commit to getting every dollar we have invested in our students and schools out to them?”

McMahon responded that the DOGE staffers were “doing an audit,” to which Murray pressed further: “I understand an audit. But when Congress appropriates money, it is the administration’s responsibility to put that out as directed by Congress, who has the power of the purse. So what will you do if the President or Elon Musk tells you not to spend money Congress has appropriated to you?”

McMahon said at first that the Department would “certainly spend” money Congress passed, before immediately following up with: “But I do think it is worthwhile to take a look at the programs before money goes out the door. It’s much easier—it is much easier to stop the money as it’s going out the door than it is to claw it back.”

Murray made clear in response: “The process by law is that you look at that, you make recommendations to Congress. …. So, I mean the question really is–who decides how much federal funding public schools get in Seattle, where it’s already been allocated… Elon Musk or Congress?”

Murray continued her questioning by asking Ms. McMahon about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), bipartisan legislation to rewrite the No Child Left Behind Act that Murray negotiated while Ranking Member of the Senate HELP Committee. The legislation gave states more flexibility in using federal education funds, eliminated one-size-fits-all mandates, and established strong federal guardrails to hold states and schools accountable. Murray argued that the Department of Education must do more to implement the law—pointing out that less than 42 percent of schools identified for comprehensive support and improvement had a plan that met all requirements of the law, and the recent National Assessment of Educational Progress showed that our lowest-performing students continue to fall furthest behind and exacerbate pre-pandemic achievement gaps.

“What specific actions will you take to implement the ESSA law?” Murray asked. “Can you name a couple of the requirements that are in that law that you will make sure are implemented?”

When McMahon declined to name a single requirement of ESSA, Murray pressed on: “Do you know what the requirements are? Do you know about the requirements for targeted support and improvement schools, or the annual report card requirement? Can you name any of the requirements?”

When McMahon demurred, Murray asked again about any provisions she could name.

McMahon responded, “No, I want to study it further and get back to you on that.”

Next, Murray asked about reports that Elon Musk and his DOGE staff have been given access to the personal information of students and their families—including their Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, date of birth, and what college they are enrolled in. While DOGE’s access is temporarily paused due to litigation, Murray noted, “There is a real potential for that kind of information to be abused, or for students’ privacy to be placed in jeopardy if the courts end up ruling against the students. And we know that DOGE could use that highly personal information to then target students and target their families or cut off access to Pell Grants for students at a college that someone perceives opposes, maybe, President Trump’s policies.”

“So I want to ask you, do you believe that DOGE employees should have access to private student data?”

When McMahon suggested that DOGE employees are operating “under certain restraints,” Murray pressed on: “I have to tell you it is deeply concerning that we have DOGE staffers—we don’t know who they are, they’re not held accountable—getting access to students’ private information. I think that should frighten everyone.”

A senior member and former chair of the HELP Committee, Senator Murray has championed students and families at every stage of her career—fighting to help ensure every child in America can get a high-quality public education. Among other things, Senator Murray negotiated the bipartisan Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), landmark legislation that she got signed into law, replacing the broken No Child Left Behind Act. As a longtime appropriator, she has successfully fought to boost funding to support students and invest in our nation’s K-12 schools, and she has secured significant increases to the Pell Grant so that it goes further for students pursuing a higher education. Senator Murray also successfully negotiated the FAFSA Simplification Act, bipartisan legislation to reform the financial aid application process, simplify the FAFSA form for students and parents, and significantly expand eligibility for federal aid.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Murray Statement on Meeting with NIH Nominee Jay Bhattacharya

ICYMI: Senator Murray Slams Indirect Cost Rate for NIH as Massive Indiscriminate Cut, Setting Back Progress on Lifesaving Research

ICYMI: Senator Murray Leads Entire Democratic Caucus in Raising Alarm Over Trump Admin Pushing Illegal Indiscriminate Funding Cuts to NIH, Derailing Lifesaving Research

ICYMI: In Senate Budget Committee, Republicans Block Murray Amendment Reversing NIH Cuts

Murray: “Trump and Elon—either through sheer ignorance or a genuine lack of caring—are putting lifesaving research in America on life support… canceling and postponing important NIH grant review and advisory council meetings. Tens of thousands of grants at NIH have already been held up by the Trump administration’s illegal actions—creating an enormous backlog that is already jeopardizing jobs, entire labs, and most importantly, the development of treatments and cures.”

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member and former Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee (HELP), released the following statement after meeting with Dr. Jayanta “Jay” Bhattacharya, President Donald Trump’s nominee to be Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Murray has been a leading voice speaking out against the Trump administration’s attempts to freeze federal funds and to lower the maximum NIH reimbursement rate for indirect costs, which would create a serious funding shortfall for research institutions of all types across the country, stifling the development of new cures for disease, and ripping treatments away from patients in need.

Trump and Elon—either through sheer ignorance or a genuine lack of caring—are putting lifesaving research in America on life support. From their attempts to illegally rip funding away from our research institutions, which would catastrophically derail the development of cures and treatments that sick patients are counting on, to an unprecedented freeze on external communications, to canceling and postponing important NIH grant review and advisory council meetings.

“Tens of thousands of grants at NIH have already been held up by the Trump administration’s illegal actions—creating an enormous backlog that is already jeopardizing jobs, entire labs, and most importantly, the development of treatments and cures.

“In our meeting today, I pressed Dr. Bhattacharya on the Trump administration’s reckless attacks on biomedical research and whether DOGE will play a role in deciding which scientists to hire and fire at NIH. I also asked Dr. Bhattacharya to lay out the steps he would take to ensure women’s health research is a priority at NIH, and that it isn’t undermined by this administration’s witch hunt against whatever they decide is allegedly ‘woke’.

“It is incredibly important that we have a leader at NIH who will stand up for the agency’s role as a world leader in lifesaving research, stand up for science and truth, and stand up to this administration’s brazen attempts to undermine lifesaving work. While I appreciated the opportunity to meet with Dr. Bhattacharya today, I am not any less alarmed by how thoughtless and destructive this administration’s approach to NIH research has been.”

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Tommy Tuberville (Alabama)

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) spoke with Linda McMahon, President Trump’s nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Education, during her confirmation hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. During their conversation, Senator Tuberville and Ms. McMahon spoke about the need to promote skills-based education and workforce development programs, which Senator Tuberville has been a huge advocate for during his time on the HELP Committee.

During the hearing, Ms. McMahon also reemphasized her support for preserving Title IX and protecting women’s sports. Senator Tuberville introduced a bill, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which would make President Trump’s Executive Order protecting women’s sports permanent.

The conversation follows yesterday’s announcement that Senator Tuberville will serve as Chairman of the HELP Subcommittee on Education and American Families, where he will continue his work to promote workforce development programs, preserve Title IX protections for girls and young women, and empower parents to make the best educational decisions for their children.

TUBERVILLE: “Thank you, Chairman. Ms. McMahon, thanks for being here today, and thanks for wanting to take on this monumental task. You know, I’m a football coach. I’m not a lawyer. I’m not a business guy—taught high school and worked my way up for forty years. This country gives you one thing, and it’s what I taught my kids when I coached—the country doesn’t owe you anything but an opportunity. And that’s the reason this country is the greatest country on the face of the earth. Now when you lose that opportunity—and I’ve lost many times—I’ve gotten my tail back up and gone again. But that’s where you learn it, through education. I’ve been to every state in this country recruiting, going to high schools—except for Alaska—in my forty years. In my forty years of coaching and going into high schools, there’s not been a bigger disappointment than our education system. I’ve seen it decline for forty years. It’s gotten worse. You’re gonna have the task of trying to bring it back. It’s gonna be hard to do because you’re gonna be fought from every side. This is not Democrat, Republican, black, white. It’s not. It’s an American problem. I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars of my budget when I was coaching in bringing kids in after I test them—they couldn’t read past the sixth grade reading level, but they had 3.5 GPAs when they came to my university. We’re failing. It is a disaster. If you can’t read, you can’t learn. And that’s the one of the first things that we gotta get back to is teaching our kids to read. We got a lot of teachers that don’t teach reading like you and I learned. It’s different. We have all this nonsensical teaching of what we call ‘Common Core’ for math. I still haven’t figured that out. But thanks for wanting to take this on because there’s a lot of obstacles going to be in your way. And so don’t be afraid to make changes. We’ve had a K-12 system for years. It’s a failure. It is an absolute failure. Let’s teach our kids. That’s the only chance they got to survive in this world, which is gonna be very, very competitive. Now, we have things that get in our way and and what’s deterring our kids nowadays. That thing right there [holds up iPHONE]. I had problems coaching with it. I was enemy number one when I told them, ‘Put that damn phone up, don’t bring it to my dressing room because I want you to listen and learn, not be on there listening to music and reading the nonsense you see on there.’ So, you’ve got a lot of obstacles. The one thing I think we need to do is just look at K-12 and [ask] ‘What do we do? How do we get better?’ I’m all for workforce development in the last two years of high school, teaching kids to learn to use their hands. And what’s your thoughts on that? About work in high school—I’m not talking about past high school—I’m talking about the last couple of years.”

McMAHON: “Well, thank you, Senator. I think when you and I met in your office—and I appreciated that time—I discussed with you that I probably dated myself by saying that when I was in high school, in your senior year in high school, you could take vocational programs, which meant that you went to school the first part of the day, the second part of the day, you could have a job. You could be learning a skill or a trade, and those credits would count towards your education. I think we need to get back to more of that. We are not teaching skills-based learning in our schools anymore. And I think we have to look at our entire education system and say, ‘Four-year college is not for everyone.’ For those particular jobs that require doctors, lawyers, engineers—that require four years, then I think—”

    *protestor interrupts*

SEN. CASSIDY: “Ms. McMahon, please suspend. The Committee will come to order. Capitol Police are asked to remove the individual from the room.”

TUBERVILLE: “I don’t think she knows how to read. Or listen.”

SEN. CASSIDY: “Again, members of the audience are reminded that disruptions will not be permitted while the committee conducts its business. And with that, Ms. McMahon, please resume.”

McMAHON: “Thank you. So, I think we do have to get back to teaching basics in school, K-12, but to continue on to what we were talking about, we don’t have enough skills-based learning. We don’t have enough internships or apprenticeship programs. I’d also like to see, more dual credits in our high schools, our junior and senior years that would count towards community colleges or other institutes that would get students through college faster if, in fact, that is the plan that they are going to take. So, we have so much that we can do to help our students get prepared to have a good income and a good livelihood. And if they can graduate from high school with some skills-based [learning] already, they can even start a business of their own. They can decide at that particular point, ‘I want to put more money towards my own education. But in the meantime, I am prepared to make a living.’ But I think we have to look at education and say, our vocational and skills-based training is not a default education. It can be something. It can be front and center so that students who are inclined to go in that direction actually should be encouraged to do that. It’s not one-size-fits all.”

TUBERVILLE: “I would hope too that you would look—my time’s almost up—would look at the number of teachers we have now as compared to administrators. We need teachers. We don’t need people up sitting in the office with their feet propped up. We need people in the classroom teaching these kids. Hold them accountable and put more money in the teachers and less money in administrators. I think we’d be a heck of a lot better off. Thank you. Thank you very much.”

    McMAHON: “Thank you.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: VIDEO: Senator Peters Takes to Senate Floor to Oppose Nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Michigan Gary Peters
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) spoke on the Senate floor in opposition to the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Peters underscored his concerns over Kennedy’s severe lack of qualifications for the critical position, given the fact that, if confirmed, Kennedy would be tasked with managing federal programs that millions of Americans depend on every day, including Medicare and Medicaid, and agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other agencies that prepare for and respond to public health and medical emergencies. Following his remarks, Peters voted against Kennedy’s nomination.
“Throughout his entire nomination process, it has become clear that Mr. Kennedy is wholly unprepared to lead this Department,” said Senator Peters. “Mr. Kennedy’s lack of experience and basic understanding of our nation’s health care system is, to say the least, extremely alarming. We cannot confirm a nominee who doesn’t even know the most basic answers about programs that he’s actually in charge of administering.”
Peters continued, “We need a Secretary who will protect the health of Americans. Robert Kennedy is not that Secretary. And if he is confirmed to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, the American people will ultimately pay the price with their health.”

To watch a video clip of Senator Peters’ remarks, click here.
During his remarks, Peters highlighted concerns that Michiganders from across the state shared with his office over Kennedy’s nomination:
“Since Mr. Kennedy was nominated to lead HHS, I’ve heard from thousands of my constituents from every corner of Michigan, from densely populated cities to some of the most rural areas in our state, who are deeply concerned about how his plans for the department would impact families. For example, I’ve heard from countless folks about the rising cost of health care that is squeezing Michigan families’ budgets. Health care prices are rising faster than inflation, making it even harder for people to get the care that they need.
“I’ve heard from a constituent who has operated a food pantry in her community for 13 years. She worries about what will happen to the people that she serves if they do not have access to the food security programs made possible by HHS.
“I received a letter from a social worker in Michigan who helped students who were traumatized by the horrific shootings at Oxford High School in Michigan and Michigan State University. She is worried that, without proper mental health resources, Americans who have been impacted by senseless gun violence, whether at school, at their places of worship, at night clubs, or at shopping malls, they will grieve and struggle alone.
“A Michigan scientist who specializes in CDC research contacted my office. They fear that if Mr. Kennedy is confirmed, it could impact their ability, and the ability of thousands of researchers all across our country, to conduct medical research that is literally saving lives.
“A concerned mother wrote me and my office that when she was 38 weeks pregnant, she told me that Mr. Kennedy’s long history of spreading dangerous medical disinformation and undermining public health initiatives is directly at odds with how she plans to keep her future child from infectious disease.
“I’ve even heard from parents who are concerned about Mr. Kennedy’s narrative suggesting vaccines cause autism. Because he has given credibility to these lies, and questioned facts from scientists and doctors, these parents worry that their children will not receive the most basic, routine care that they deserve.
“I also heard from a constituent who was born before the polio vaccine was approved. She said that, to this day, she can still remember the relief on her mother’s face when the polio vaccine became available. This moment has stuck with her throughout her 30-year career as a registered nurse, where she has made it her life’s work to study and safely administer vaccines in her community.”
“And let’s be clear. Let’s be absolutely clear. Vaccines are scientifically proven to protect against diseases like chickenpox, polio, influenza, and yes, COVID-19.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Fischer Reintroduces Legislation to Support America’s Energy Independence

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Nebraska Deb Fischer
Today, U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, led her colleagues in reintroducing the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act of 2025. Senator Fischer’s legislation is the only permanent, nationwide solution to unleash the power of year-round E15—fulfilling President Trump’s mandate for energy independence.
By allowing the year-round, nationwide sale of E15, this legislation will finally end years of patchwork regulations and give both producers and consumers the certainty they deserve.Securing this permanent fix, coupled with Senator Fischer’s work with the administration to ensure strong renewable volume obligations (RVOs), will enable biofuels to contribute to our nation’s energy dominance.
Additional cosponsors of this bipartisan, bicameral bill include U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W. Va.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Dick Durbin (D. Ill.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.). U.S. Representatives Adrian Smith (NE-03) and Angie Craig (MN-02) introduced identical companion legislation in the House.
“It’s time to once and for all solidify President Trump’s pledge to allow the sale of year-round E15—giving America’s producers and consumers the certainty they deserve. My bill will put an end to years of patchwork regulations and finally make nationwide, year-round E15 a reality. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and the Senate, as well as with President Trump, to get this bill signed into law,” said Senator Fischer.
“For our country to remain a global energy leader, we must continue to invest in renewable and clean energy so we can decrease our emissions and dependence on foreign oil,” said Senator Duckworth. “Producing less expensive fuel choices like E15 that can be sold year-round would help lower gas prices, protect the environment, support our farmers and drive economic opportunity throughout the Midwest. I’m proud to join Senator Fischer in reintroducing our bipartisan legislation that would do just that.”
“I have been fighting to eliminate unnecessary, unscientific, and misguided barriers to E15 access since 2010. It is time to enact year-round E15 nationwide to provide relief at the pump and certainty for producers. I thank my House colleagues and Senator Fischer for their partnership on our tenacious bipartisan efforts to honor congressional intent in the RFS. From ethanol to biomass-based diesel to sustainable aviation fuel, the world depends on liquid fuels to meet consumer demand and move us forward. We have just scratched the surface of our production capacity, which is why it is so important to codify year-round E15 and ensure robust RFS volumes,” said Congressman Smith.
“Homegrown biofuels are tools we have right now to address climate change, strengthen our nation’s energy infrastructure and lower costs for Americans at the gas pump,” said Congresswoman Craig. “This bill is the kind of commonsense legislation we need more of in Washington, and I’m proud to be a part of the bipartisan coalition fighting for year-round E15 in the House.”
Nebraska Stakeholder Support:“We applaud Senator Fischer’s leadership and continued passion in reintroducing the year-round E15 legislation, a critical step forward for America’s corn farmers,” said Nebraska Corn Growers Association farmer and President Michael Dibbern. “Although we’re disappointed that this common-sense legislation didn’t pass during the lame duck session, we’re grateful for Senator Fischer’s perseverance. By securing year-round E15 approval, we can increase corn grind, drive economic growth and provide a vital market opportunity for farmers. This legislation would also bring much-needed consistency and stability to the marketplace, allowing American families to choose lower-cost, lower-emission E15 at the pump every day. We’re appreciative of Senator Fischer’s tireless advocacy and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to advance the interests of Nebraska’s corn farmers.”
“The Nebraska Farm Bureau again thanks Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer for her continued leadership on trying to approve the sale of E-15 year-round. It is past time for the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act to become law, and we look forward to working to get this important legislation to President Trump’s desk this year. For too long, outdated rules and regulations have prevented the year-round sale of E-15, and 2025 must be the year we finally rectify this issue,” said Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation President Mark McHargue.
“Thank you to Senator Fischer for leading the fight for year-round E-15, which is a huge opportunity for Nebraska’s ethanol industry, farmers, and drivers. This bill means stronger rural economies, lower prices at the pump, and a cleaner fuel option for drivers. On behalf of our members across the state, Renewable Fuels Nebraska applauds her leadership and calls on Congress to act now and pass this bipartisan policy,” said Renewable Fuels Nebraska Executive Director Dawn Caldwell.

Nebraska Corn Growers Association, Nebraska Farm Bureau, and Renewable Fuels Nebraska.
    National Stakeholder Support:
“Year-round, nationwide E15 sales will prevent a confusing patchwork of state regulations and give consumers reliable access to the fuels they use every day. We thank Representatives Smith and Craig, as well as Senators Fischer and Duckworth, for championing this important bipartisan effort. Now, Congress must act to bring certainty and consistency to the fuel marketplace,” said American Petroleum Institute SVP Government Relations Kristin Whitman.
“This bipartisan legislation would finally bring nationwide consistency and stability to the marketplace and eliminate the need for last-minute emergency waivers. With the summer driving season just around the corner, we urge lawmakers to swiftly adopt this bill and deliver a win for American families seeking cleaner, lower-cost fuel options. Time is of the essence,” said Renewable Fuels Association President and CEO Geoff Cooper. “Ethanol producers, oil refiners, fuel retailers, equipment manufacturers, farmers, and consumers have all rallied behind this commonsense approach. We thank Sens. Deb Fischer and Tammy Duckworth for their continued leadership on this important issue. RFA commends them and their fellow renewable fuel supporters in the Senate for continuing to fight for fair market access for our nation’s farmers, ethanol producers, and consumers.”“We applaud Senators Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) and Representatives Adrian Smith (R-Neb.) and Angie Craig (D-Minn.) for leading the charge once again to unlock permanent, nationwide access to E15. Rural families and American consumers are lucky to have them in our corner, and we hope this is the bill that finally makes it over the finish line. The American people have waited for too long to get reliable access to a fuel that can lower costs while creating jobs in rural communities. We look forward to continuing our work with our champions in Congress and the White House to finally make year-round E15 the law of the land,” said Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor.
“Nationwide consumer access to E15 will save drivers money at the pump while boosting the farm economy,” said Illinois farmer and National Corn Growers Association President Kenneth Hartman Jr. “We want to applaud the sponsors and co-sponsors of this bill for introducing legislation that promises to significantly benefit consumers and farmers alike.”
“E-15 is a win for both farmers and consumers, offering a vital opportunity to lower fuel prices and provide more choices at the pump,” said National Farmer Union President Rob Larew.“This legislation supports family farmers by creating stronger, more reliable markets while helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With this bill, we’re taking critical steps toward a more sustainable future, and we urge lawmakers to act quickly to ensure farmers and consumers benefit from these opportunities.”
“To effectively serve their customers, convenience retailers need a stable and predictable year-round market for fuels like E15,” said National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) General Counsel Doug Kantor. “We are grateful to Senator Fischer and Senator Duckworth for their continued leadership on this issue, with legislation that will improve the environmental attributes of summer gasoline while lowering costs for families and small businesses across the country.”
    Full List of National Endorsements:
American Petroleum Institute, Renewable Fuels Association, Growth Energy, National Corn Growers Association, National Farmer Union, and National Association of Convenience Stores.
Background:Senator Fischer has been a steadfast champion for year-round E15 since 2015, when she first co-led a bill to allow year-round E15 during the 114th Congress.
In 2017, during the 115th Congress, she introduced the Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act to amend the Clear Air Act and help make year-round E15 a reality. Later that year, she testified before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in support of her bipartisan legislation.
In 2019, Senator Fischer traveled with President Trump to Nebraska and Iowa when he announced regulatory efforts to allow the sale of E15. When President Trump’s efforts were struckdown by courts, Senator Fischer continued to lead by reintroducing this legislation in 2021, during the 117th Congress. Senator Fischer released an updated bill in 2022 that included unprecedented support.
In 2023, Senator Fischer introduced the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act of 2023 to break down remaining barriers and unlock the full potential of nationwide, year-round E15, advancing America’s energy independence. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Adrian Smith (NE-03) introduced companion legislation.
Last month, on the first day of his term, President Trump took steps to make E15 available year-round through his Executive Order Declaring a National Energy Emergency.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Lee Introduces Healthy SNAP Act, Stopping Tax Dollars from Subsidizing Junk Food

    US Senate News:

WASHINGTON – Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) has introduced the Healthy SNAP Act. The bill would exclude soft drinks, candy, ice cream, and prepared desserts from being purchased with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The bill also requires the Secretary of Agriculture to ensure that eligible food promotes the health of SNAP recipients and reflects nutrition science, public health concerns, and cultural eating patterns. Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK) has introduced the bill in the House of Representatives.
“American tax dollars should not be used to pay for junk food and endanger the health of the most vulnerable Americans,” said Sen. Lee. “The fastest way to Make America Healthy Again is to encourage balanced diets and stop subsidizing unhealthy food choices. The Healthy SNAP Act is a solid step forward in building a society where all families can be enjoy strength, health, and good nutrition.”
“President Trump has been given a mandate by the majority of Americans to Make America Healthy Again, and those in his administration, like RFK Jr. and Senator Marco Rubio, have directly advocated for eliminating junk food purchases with SNAP,” said Rep. Brecheen. “This legislation advances President Trump’s agenda by ensuring that SNAP is used for nutritious foods, rather than junk foods and soda that contribute to long-term health issues.”
“The SNAP program should not prey on low-income populations by perpetuating the consumption of sugary drinks designed to be addictive filled with artificial additives. It’s time to use our SNAP dollars wisely, to incentivize and provide healthier options in low-income areas so all Americans can live healthier and longer. We need more government dollars going towards food that actually provides health rather than take it away – this starts with removing the junk.” –Vani Hari, Founder of Food Babe & Truvani
“With 38% of U.S. teens now afflicted with pre-diabetes, it is the height of public policy insanity to subsidize soda and candy for the neediest children. SNAP money should be going to American farmers and ranchers, not soda companies. This bill will ensure that.” -Calley Means, Founder of Truemed
    BACKGROUND

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) exists to provide nutritious food to low-income Americans who are struggling to make ends meet. Over 42 million people, roughly 1 in 8 Americans, are currently receiving SNAP benefits. However, over 20 percent of all SNAP dollars are used to purchase soda, candy, desserts, and other junk food items, which is projected to total $240 billion over the next decade. One of the key aspects of President Trump’s agenda is to “Make America Healthy Again”, and one of the ways to work toward that goal is to prevent SNAP dollars from being used to purchase unhealthy and ultra-processed junk food items that fuel the rise of chronic disease in the United States. Obesity, and the chronic diseases it causes, costs the United States healthcare system nearly $173 billion every year.[1] Taxpayer-funded SNAP benefits should not continue to fund the growth of chronic disease in the United States.
The Healthy SNAP Act would exclude soda, candy, ice cream, and prepared desserts from SNAP eligibility. The bill would also direct the Secretary of Agriculture to review foods qualified under SNAP every five years to ensure that new and relevant nutrition data is reflected in SNAP food guidelines. The legislation is endorsed by Heritage Action for America.
