  • MIL-OSI USA: February 13th, 2025 Heinrich Statement on Trump’s Threat to Dismantle the Department of Education

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New Mexico Martin Heinrich

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement on President Trump’s unlawful threat to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education:

“Gutting the Education Department will have disastrous consequences in New Mexico and across the country. Whether it’s because our kids’ favorite teacher is laid off, their after school program is shuttered, or they lose the help they need learning to read, President Trump’s threatened actions will hurt our kids.

“As a father and as New Mexico’s senior senator, I will do everything I can to stop President Trump’s attack on our children’s future.”

Background on How President Trump’s Unlawful Dismantling of the Education Department Will Harm New Mexico’s Students, Parents, and Educators:

    Title I Funding

87% of schools in New Mexico receive a total of $147 million in federal Title I funding from the Department of Education. This funding supports low-income students with literacy and math. Title I funds are used for:

    • Hiring additional teachers and specialists who support students and their teachers with literacy and math instruction
    • Purchasing additional instructional materials
    • Teacher training
    • Parent engagement
    • Smaller Classroom Sizes

    Federal Pell Grants

Over 44,000 low-income college students in New Mexico — including students in vocational-technical certificate programs — currently receive a Federal Pell Grant from the Department of Education. Pell Grants help New Mexicans pay for tuition, housing, food, transportation, books, and other education-related costs.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Funding

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) funds special education services. 16.5% of New Mexico students are on an individualized education plan (IEP) and receive services under this program. New Mexico receives $120 million per year in IDEA funding from the Department of Education. IDEA funding can be used to pay special education instructors, support services such as behavioral health specialists, and classroom materials and equipment designed for students with disabilities.

21st Century Community Learning Center (After School Program) Funding

The Department of Education administers Title IV, Part B funds for after school programs. In New Mexico, 124 schools receive this funding for their after school enrichment and tutoring programs.

Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act Funding

The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act funds grants for equipment and programming for high school career and technical education programs. New Mexico receives $10.5 million in Carl Perkins Act Career and Technical Education Improvement Act funding from the Department of Education.

    Title II, Part A Funding

Title II, Part A funds teacher professional development. New Mexico receives over $2 million per year from the Department of Education to help educators improve and expand their teaching skills.

    Title III Funding

Title III funds help students learn English. 1 out of 3 families in New Mexico speak a language other than English at home and about 1 out of 6 students are classified as English learners. New Mexico currently receives about $9 million per year to help kids learn English.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Schatz: RFK Jr., Whose Dangerous Lies Fueled Measles Outbreak in Samoa & Caused Preventable Deaths, Unqualified To Lead HHS

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Hawaii Brian Schatz

WASHINGTON – Today on the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) underscored the troubling record of President Donald Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose efforts in Samoa to deceive families about measles vaccines led to a deadly outbreak that killed more than 80 people, many of whom were young children. Schatz urged his colleagues to vote against RFK Jr. in tomorrow’s confirmation vote.

“It’s not often that the stakes of a vote to confirm a cabinet nominee are this high. But tomorrow, when we vote on the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the stakes will be life or death,” said Senator Schatz. Mr. Kennedy, in his words, but more importantly in his actions, has proven over and over that he is a unique danger to society. But he’s on the edge of becoming the country’s top health leader with the power to unleash bygone diseases and undermine trust in science for generations to come.”

“For the first time ever, we will have a Health Secretary who has actively helped cause outbreak instead of to contain them,” he continued. “We’ll have someone in charge of medical research who’s taken every opportunity to undermine science instead of promoting it. We’ll have someone who’s never come across a wacky idea that he didn’t like, whether it’s that antidepressants are causing mass shootings or that chemicals in the water are turning kids gay… Those two things should be immediately disqualifying.”

Schatz recounted the story of how Kennedy traveled to Samoa in 2019 to discourage people from taking the measles vaccine which ultimately led to an outbreak in which thousands of people were infected and 83, mostly children, died.

“It is so chilling to contemplate the idea that someone as recognizable as a Kennedy would fly across an ocean to a small, developing country and basically tell everybody, ‘Be afraid of this lifesaving medicine’,” Schatz concluded. “If you think it’s a good idea to leave all of these diseases in the rearview mirror, then this is a very bad person to have running the Department of Health and Human Services.”

Video of Senator Schatz’s remarks is available here.

The full text of Senator Schatz’s remarks, as delivered, is below.

It is not often that the stakes of a vote to confirm a cabinet nominee are this high. But tomorrow, when we vote on the nomination of RFK Jr. to be the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, the stakes will be life and death. Mr. Kennedy, in his words, but more importantly in his actions, has proven over and over again that he is a unique danger to society.

But he is on the edge of becoming the country’s top health leader, with the power to unleash bygone diseases and undermine trust in science for generations to come. For the first time ever, we will have a Health Secretary who has actively helped to cause outbreak instead of to contain them. We’ll have someone in charge of medical research who has taken every opportunity to undermine science, instead of promoting it.

We’ll have someone who’s never come across a crazy idea that he didn’t like, whether it’s that antidepressants are the cause of mass shootings or chemicals in the water are turning children gay.

This is the Secretary of the Health and Human Services Department. Those two things right there should be immediately disqualifying. This should be 100 to 0. This guy used to be a Democrat. This guy was pro-choice. This guy was for clean energy. This shouldn’t be a partisan issue except to say for HHS, you need somebody who has devoted their life and hopefully has some expertise in the area of public health.

And it’s not just that we didn’t get someone who has expertise in public health. We have someone who has caused disease and death. And I say those words with precision. I understand that both sides of the aisle are prone to exaggerating their case, and being apocalyptic. When we describe a pending vote, I’ve been here for a while, and everything is always the most important vote that we will ever cast.

And I don’t know if this is the most important vote we’ll ever cast. I do think, gosh, I hope I’m wrong. I really do hope I’m wrong. But I do think this is likely the Cabinet Secretary vote that is likely to age the most poorly, because this person has the potential to actually cause diseases like rubella, like mumps, like measles, like polio, that have been gone for many generations because we have a vaccine regime.

And I want to tell you what he did in Samoa. In 2019, he flew to Samoa to discourage people from taking the measles vaccine. And the reason was that he wanted to run a quote, natural experiment to see how people would fare against the disease without protections. Now, some of you may know this. My father was the first whistleblower against the Tuskegee experiments in which the United States Public Health Service did a similar thing.

They knew that penicillin cured syphilis, and they knew that for the most part, untreated syphilis caused death. But the US Public Health Service decided to divide a cohort of African-American men into two parts. One would receive the medicine and be safe and be cured, and another cohort would receive a placebo and not get the lifesaving cure for syphilis.

And why did they do that? To quote, “observe the disease process”.

To observe the disease process. So when you when you investigate whether or not a medicine works, there’s a whole process to it, right? The FDA double blind studies all the rest of it. But the basic idea is you’re trying to get to some level of reliability and statistical significance so that you can project out into the population what’s going to work and what’s not.

Now, the second way to do this is say you can achieve statistical significance until you just let a bunch of people get sick and figure out what happens. The United States Congress, led by someone with whom I served for a couple of years, Tom Harkin, when they found out about the Tuskegee experiments, made a law against the U.S. Public Health Service ever doing that again because it’s immoral.

It’s bad science. Sure. But more than that, it treated these African-American men as if they were worth experimenting on, as if this this category of human beings in the United States were expendable for scientific research purposes. And that’s exactly what happened in Samoa. And it’s exactly what happened in Samoa.

6000 people got the measles. 83 people died. 79 of them were kids. It is so chilling to contemplate the idea that someone as recognizable as a Kennedy would fly across an ocean to a small, developing country and basically tell everybody, be afraid of this lifesaving medicine. And it’s saw he did that once and said, I’m sorry I misunderstood or I’m being misunderstood.

This dude actually sells onesies on his website saying, I think it’s like “unvaxxed and unafraid” for a little baby. This guy has views that are out of the mainstream of, I would guess, 99 out of 100 United States senators. And I do understand the pressure that some of my colleagues are facing. They’re being told if you vote against one Trump nominee, you will be primaried.

So that’s not a small amount of pressure. But this one, I just promise you, it’s not going to age well.

Some of my colleagues are expressing reservations in private. And I think that’s better than not expressing any reservations at all. And some of them are getting private assurances from Mr. Kennedy that he does not, in fact, hate all vaccines. He just wants to answer questions and all the rest of it. I am not reassured. I think this person has demonstrated over a pretty long career that he says whatever is convenient in the moment, right?

This is like an unreconstructed, he’s a Kennedy. He was running for president in the Democratic primary, and now he’s a Trump guy, like ten months later. What does that mean? It means he’s got no core values, right? Like there’s just no way to go from over here to over here politically in such a short period of time, except that he was offered something, and he was offered this job.

And why does he want this job? Because he’s got a very specific view about public health.

And I just want to make one other point. The problem of our food system. Right. The problem of the extent to which we subsidize ultra-processed foods that are coming from commodities that are subsidizing the farm bill and causing people to get increasingly diabetic, and all the related health problems that happen related to that. Like, that’s a really legitimate place to do some good bipartisan work.

And I would love to do that. It’s also not what the HHS secretary does, what the United States Department of Agriculture does, for the most part, and it’s what the Congress does. The problem is the farm bill. The problem is you get what you subsidize. And we are subsidizing all the corn products and all the soy products and all the sugar products that go into the lab tested extra delicious, extra bad for you, extra addictive stuff that is making us all.

Even though we’re the wealthiest country in human history, a very unhealthy country. And so if that’s all this guy we’re working on, you can count me in. But if your idea of public health has to do with healthy food, has to do with prevention, has to do with understanding that our food system and our agricultural system and our USDA and our farm bill process is essentially broken.

You don’t actually have to purchase this kind of crazy, evil stuff. You just don’t you don’t have to do it. There’s lots of good people on the food system side. You can work with, work for, cheer on, organize with. But this man is going around… he’s not talking about the COVID vaccine.

He’s not talking about whether or not it’s appropriate to require masks in public, where Democrats and Republicans are, like, still arguing about stuff like that. He’s talking about stuff that like, if you’re a parent and now you don’t know whether when your kid goes to school, they’ve reached herd immunity for stuff that is like way, way, way generations back in the rearview mirror.

And so I don’t know if this is going to mark one of the most important public health moments in American history, but I can’t think of another time where we actually have the technology, we have the medicine, we have the science, we have the distribution system, we have the public infrastructure to keep people safe. And we just decide by a vote of 53 to 47 to make people unsafe.

So Secretary of Defense, DNI, all these are important. Treasury. Every cabinet position is important. It’s going to be a little more challenging to know whether your vote is vindicated in the sweep of history. I think this guy is going to age very poorly in the job, because I think we are going to see bad public health outcomes very, very shortly.

This really is a matter of life and death. And I understand what I have learned over the last ten days is if Republicans are going to display courage, it’s not going to be on the cabinet. There are a few that have voted, you know, not with their party, but for the most part, like they’re in line, and Trump is going to get his cabinet.

But let this be a marker for everybody. Let today be a marker for everybody. If you even if you voted for Trump, if you didn’t vote for Trump, if you’re not a voter, it doesn’t matter. If you think it’s a good idea to leave all of these diseases in the rearview mirror, then this is a very, very bad person to have running the Department of Health and Human Services.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) released the following statement on U.S. Senator Tina Smith’s (D-MN) announcement she will not seek reelection in 2026.

“It’s been a privilege to work with Senator Tina Smith. I’m lucky enough to call her not only a colleague, but a true friend. Tina and I have been friends since long before our time together in the Senate. We have watched each other’s kids grow up and been there for each other through life’s ups and downs. As the only Senator to have worked at Planned Parenthood, Tina quickly became a leader in Washington in the fight to protect women’s rights. Tina also bravely shared her own story as part of her work to strengthen mental health services for all Americans. Her quiet but effective governing style earned her the title the velvet hammer. While Tina and I will continue to work together for the next two years, our friendship and her legacy will last a lifetime.”

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) joined U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and 13 of their Senate colleagues in a letter urging the Trump administration to exempt seasonal firefighters from the federal hiring freeze. Reports emerged last week indicating that the federal funding freeze is preventing the hiring and onboarding of seasonal firefighters, a workforce that already struggles with recruitment and retention. This comes as the West continues to be ravaged by deadly wildfires.

“We write today following reports that hiring and onboarding for federal seasonal firefighters has stopped due to the Trump Administration’s federal hiring freeze,” wrote the Senators. “We are extremely concerned to hear that this is happening across the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and National Park Service ahead of what’s expected to be another devastating wildfire year.”

“Although there is an urgent need to hire more federal firefighters, the Trump Administration’s hiring freeze does the opposite and is pausing hiring at a critical time for this already understaffed workforce,” they continued. “We urge you to put the safety of families and communities across the country first and allow the federal seasonal firefighter hiring process to continue without delay.”

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, issued the following statement after voting against the nomination of Brooke Rollins to serve as Secretary of the Department of Agriculture:

“New Mexico’s agriculture industry is the backbone of our rural economies and helps feed both our state and the world. It is unacceptable that our farmers, ranchers, and acequia parciantes are now caught in the crosshairs of Elon Musk’s political agenda – left on the hook for millions of dollars that the federal government promised them. This isn’t about politics – it’s about real people who are being abandoned by the administration despite their critical role in providing for all Americans.

“The administration must uphold its commitment to our farmers, ranchers, and producers. Until there is a commitment to do so, I cannot support a nominee who prioritizes a political agenda over the needs of our agriculture industries and all Americans.”

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Alabama Tommy Tuberville

“Kash Patel is the Democrats’ worst nightmare”

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) joined Dana Perino and Bill Hemmer on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” to discuss the importance of confirming President Trump’s nominees. Senator Tuberville specifically mentioned Kash Patel’s nomination for Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Linda McMahon’s nomination for Secretary of Education (ED)—who both have hearings today.

Read excerpts from the interview below or watch on YouTube or Rumble.

ON LINDA MCMAHON FOR EDUCATION SECRETARY

HEMMER: “Sir, we could have thrown a dart and picked any one of a number of topics on this. We’ll start with education. You’re close to this. What happens?”

TUBERVILLE: “Well, I was with President Trump going to the Super Bowl the other day, and he’s adamant that we get our education back because that’s the future for our country. Our young people are our number one commodity, Bill. […] But at the end of the day, we have got to get back to reading, writing, math, civics—teaching our history to our kids, not indoctrinating our kids. And we’re having a hearing today. I was named the Chairman of the Education and the American Family [sub]committee in the HELP [Committee] this past week. I’m looking forward to having hearings and getting our parents back involved in education. My God, we have turned it over to the teachers and the teachers’ unions. It is out of control. We’ve gotta start teaching again.”

PERINO: “One of your colleagues, Senator Bernie Sanders—there was a rally against Linda McMahon, the nominee to run the Department. He had this to say. [clip from Sen. Sanders at rally]

Why don’t they ever have a rally about the dismal test scores that we see across our nation?”

TUBERVILLE: “Exactly, Dana. And to go back on this, Bernie Sanders has been the chairman of the HELP, the Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee, for the past [two] years. I think we’ve had one education hearing. They care nothing about education. They wanna indoctrinate. So, again, we’ve got to get back to doing commonsense things where we all understand that our kids are so important, more important than anything else that we do.”

ON DOGE SHRINKING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

HEMMER: “Sir, this is moving all very quickly. And there might be, you know what Democrats are saying about the cuts, etcetera, and how it’s gonna hurt people in the end. Can you understand how there could be a measure of uncertainty for people watching this? And if you do, how would you reassure them that the government will still be there for them when needed and necessary?”

TUBERVILLE: “Well, all you gotta do is look at what President Trump said during his campaign. Everything’s gonna be about the American people, about America First, about everything within our borders, not outside our borders. And it all, again, goes back to education, crime, all the things that are going on in our country that we gotta get better. So yes, there’s gonna be some cuts. But one thing about it, Bill and Dana, if we don’t cut federal spending, we will not have the country that you and I had a chance to grow up in because we will go bankrupt, which we almost already are. It will get worse and we will become a socialist country that will depend on handouts that we don’t have money for.”

ON KASH PATEL FOR FBI DIRECTOR

PERINO: “Kash Patel is the President’s nominee to lead the FBI. There’s another hearing that’s happening as we speak—that’s just getting started. He should be confirmed by the end of this week for sure. […] This is what he said about the FBI back on January 30th. [clip of Patel]

What time this week do you believe he will get confirmed after this hearing today?”

TUBERVILLE: “Well, it’ll probably be next week—we’ll have his first vote to get him out of out of cloture and go into the debate. […] He’s the Democrats’ worst nightmare because he knows what we all know up here—that it’s been all corrupt. You know, we have to take back our country in terms of the weaponized criminal justice system. We made a good start with Pam Bondi, Tulsi Gabbard, all these people that have been put in place. But at the end of the day, it’s got to be Kash Patel who’s over the country’s head police office. And again, Kash has been involved in all of it. He knows where the bodies are buried. The Democrats are scared to death because when he gets in, which he will, he’s gonna start shaking it all up. We’ve got some good people, but he’s got to take politics out of the FBI, and he’s got to put trust back in the FBI for the American people because right now, it is a total disaster up here on the hill and especially in my state of Alabama.”

HEMMER: “Senator, we’ll let you get back to work. And apparently, there’s a lot of work to be done. So, thank you for your time, Senator Tommy Tuberville. Thank you.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Boozman, Kennedy, Moran Champion Bill to Protect Veterans’ Second Amendment Rights

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Arkansas – John Boozman

WASHINGTON––U.S. Senators John Boozman (R-AR), John Kennedy (R-LA) and Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Jerry Moran (R-KS) introduced the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act to ensure veterans do not lose their Second Amendment right to purchase or own firearms when they receive help managing their Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits.

Because of the VA’s interpretation of current law, the VA sends a beneficiary’s name to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) whenever a fiduciary is appointed to help a beneficiary manage his or her VA benefit payments. The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act would prohibit the Secretary of Veterans Affairs from transmitting a veteran’s personal information to NICS unless a relevant judicial authority rules that the beneficiary is a danger to himself or others.

“Veterans must not be required to forfeit the Second Amendment without a careful, constitutional process. Attempting to deprive former servicemembers of firearms for protection or recreation simply because they require assistance managing the benefits they have earned is bureaucracy at its worst. Our legislation would correct this injustice and preserve these law-abiding patriots’ rights,” said Boozman.

“Our veterans should not receive less due process rights than other Americans just because they served our country and asked the federal government for a helping hand. Under the VA’s interpretation of the law, however, unelected bureaucrats punish Louisiana and America’s veterans by forcing them to choose between their Second Amendment rights and getting the help they need as they manage their financial affairs. I’m proud to introduce the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act to stand up for veterans’ constitutional rights by ending this unfair practice,” said Kennedy.

“Veterans should never be forced to choose between receiving assistance from VA to manage their benefits and their fundamental Second Amendment rights. Our nation should be encouraging veterans to utilize VA services, not discouraging them by denying them due process. The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act makes certain that the rights of those who have served are protected, and that veterans are not penalized for receiving support that they have earned and deserve,” said Moran.

The legislation is also cosponsored by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Steve Daines (R-MT), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Jim Banks (R-IN), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), Rick Scott (R-FL), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Tim Sheehy (R-MT).

Rep. Mike Bost (R-IL-12), Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, introduced companion legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act is endorsed by the Vietnam Veterans of America, National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, Black Veterans Empowerment Council, Military Order of the Purple Heart, National Shooting Sports Foundation, National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of America, AMAC Action, Turning Point Action, Firearms Regulatory Accountability Coalition, National Disability Rights Network and the National Association for Gun Rights.

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New Jersey Cory Booker

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued the following statement:

“There’s no question that America’s food system is painfully broken. It drives historic levels of suffering and illness. It’s broken for farmers and rural communities; it’s broken for workers; it poisons our environment; it subsidizes unhealthy foods and hurts consumers. It’s a system that seems to hurt everyone except the multinational food companies that control it.

“It’s also true that our country faces a huge nutrition crisis. In recent decades, we’ve seen an explosion of diet-related diseases, fueled by the world’s biggest food companies that rigged the rules in their favor to maximize profits at the expense of public health. These companies have blocked my efforts to regulate things like toxic pesticides, food chemicals, and ultra-processed foods.

“I’m always hopeful that we can make progress on these challenges and I will work with whomever wants to join with me and the millions of Americans who are demanding change.

“However, I will not be voting to confirm Mr. Kennedy. He has championed views on a number of issues that are deeply concerning to me. Furthermore, the Trump administration is flagrantly ignoring the law in its efforts to dismantle vital government programs, from health care to education to national security, while ignoring the burden of rising costs on American families.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) today voted against advancing the nomination of Kash Patel in the Senate Judiciary Committee, President Trump’s nominee to be the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and expressed his opposition:
“In my view, the beginning of the Trump Administration is showing a contempt for the Constitution and a lawlessness that is dangerous for the republic [add]…” said Senator Peter Welch. “We, each of us, must be custodians of that constitutional order and our role as the legislature, in it. Tough judgments have to be made. My judgment is that the President is showing absolute contempt for the United States Congress. And the next stop is contempt for the United States Judiciary. I cannot vote for a person who signed onto that agenda.”

During Patel’s confirmation hearing, Senator Welch grilled the nominee about his refusal to acknowledge that President Biden won the 2020 Presidential Election and stressed the importance of combatting any attempt to weaponize the Justice Department and the FBI under the Trump Administration. Earlier this week, Senator Welch reacted to reports that Patel has been personally involved in the Trump Administration’s ongoing efforts to target and fire career FBI agents and officials. Under oath, Mr. Patel told Senator Welch he had no recollection of the purge at the FBI. Senator Welch reacted:
“If these reports are true, this is perjury. Under oath, Kash Patel said he had no recollection of any discussions or details about plans to purge career FBI agents—but whistleblowers have revealed that he was not only aware but orchestrating it. Kash Patel’s goal is to wreck the FBI, and my colleagues across the aisle must vote no.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Hickenlooper, Graham, Coons, Young, Reintroduce Bipartisan Bill to Advance Domestic Critical Materials Production

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Colorado John Hickenlooper
Legislation will cut reliance on China for critical materials essential to our national security, energy, and emerging tech
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper, Lindsey Graham, Chris Coons, and Todd Young reintroduced the bipartisan Critical Materials Future Act to establish a pilot program for the Department of Energy to financially support domestic critical material processing projects.
“American energy independence is a bipartisan goal,” said Hickenlooper. “The U.S. could be a global leader in critical materials, but we need to shore up our domestic supply chains to strengthen our national security. Let’s get to work.”
“China maintains dominant control over critical mineral processing, which poses significant risks to our national security. It’s important for us to build better and more resilient processing capabilities here at home,” said Graham.
“Critical minerals are essential to manufacturing the most advanced energy and defense technologies, but the production, processing, and recycling of these materials is dominated by China,” said Coons. “This bipartisan bill will spur the investment we need to regain American control of our critical mineral supply chains.”
“Our reliance on global supply chains for critical materials poses a significant national security threat, especially as the Chinese Communist Party continues to manipulate this market,” said Young. “Our bill will take innovative steps to identify opportunities for American leadership and investment in critical material projects, strengthen domestic supply chains, and boost our economic and global competitiveness.”
The U.S. critical minerals list contains 50 minerals – including graphite, nickel, and cobalt – that are essential to our economy, infrastructure, and military capability. Critical minerals are used in smartphones, electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, and more.
This December, China announced that they would immediately block the export of three critical minerals: gallium, germanium, and antimony to the U.S. China currently controls 90% of the global processing capacity for rare earth elements and over 80% of the processing for other critical minerals like cobalt, gallium, and graphite. Experts have become increasingly concerned with U.S. dependence on China for critical materials, arguing it poses a significant risk to national security.
The Critical Materials Future Act supports critical material processing projects in the United States by granting the Secretary of Energy the authority and funding to deploy innovative financial mechanisms, such as contracts for differences and advanced market commitments, within this sector.
The bill also requires the Secretary of Energy to conduct a comprehensive study on the impact of these financial tools on market dynamics and processing projects within the critical materials sector, and to provide recommendations for expanding their use to strengthen America’s processing capabilities.
In the 119th Congress, Hickenlooper has reintroduced his bipartisan  STRATEGIC Minerals Act to foster critical minerals trade with our international allies, and the bipartisan Unearth Innovation Act to establish a DOE program for critical minerals innovation.
The Critical Materials Future Act is supported by the Colorado School of Mines, the Bipartisan Policy Center, the National Wildlife Federation, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, the Key Minerals Forum, Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions, Employ America, MineTech Ventures, Alta Resource Technologies, the Chamber of Progress, U.S. Critical Minerals, Nyrstar, the Alabama Mobility and Power Center (University of Alabama), South32 Hermosa, Alliance for Mineral Security, South Star Battery Metals Corp, the American Critical Minerals Association, and the Federation of American Scientists. • MIL-OSI USA: Hickenlooper, Tillis Reintroduce Bill to Boost Critical Mineral Innovation, Secure American Leadership

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Colorado John Hickenlooper
Unearth Innovation Act would create a Department of Energy program to drive responsible domestic critical mineral production, develop our energy workforce
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Thom Tillis reintroduced their bipartisan Unearth Innovation Act to spur American innovation and drive responsible production of domestic critical minerals with less environmental impact.
“We need critical minerals for our clean energy future and national security, but we can’t rely on China or others for them,” said Hickenlooper. “U.S. research and innovation will set a global example for critical minerals sourcing and help develop our energy workforce of tomorrow.”
“This legislation promotes innovative technologies that will make mining safer, cleaner, and more efficient,” said Tillis. “By collaborating with agencies and experts, we can create high-quality jobs, enhance safety, and equip the next generation with the skills and training needed to strengthen our critical minerals supply chains.”
The legislation would establish a Mining and Mineral Innovation Program within the Department of Energy (DOE) to increase research, development, and commercialization of advanced mining, recycling, and processing technologies that would reduce environmental and human impacts.
The U.S. critical minerals list contains 50 minerals – including graphite, nickel, and cobalt – that are essential to our economy, infrastructure, and military capability. Critical minerals are used in smartphones, electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, and more. Currently, the U.S. is largely dependent on China for importing these minerals, which creates supply chain instability and threats to national security.
Specifically, the Unearth Innovation Act would:
Support research and development of technologies for identifying, mining, recycling, and processing minerals and to reclaim, remediate, and reuse existing mines
Promote responsible mining practices that minimize human and environmental impact
Engage with communities and consult with tribal nations to support strategies to increase the prosperity of mining communities
Allow DOE to coordinate with federal agencies on mining safety innovations
Partner with academic institutions and the mining industry to accelerate new mining technologies and create a pipeline into the critical minerals workforce
In the 119th Congress, Hickenlooper has reintroduced his bipartisan STRATEGIC Minerals Act to foster critical minerals trade with our international allies and the bipartisan Critical Materials Future Act to establish a pilot program to finance domestic critical minerals production.
The Unearth Innovation Act is supported by the Colorado School of Mines, the Bipartisan Policy Center, the National Wildlife Federation, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, SAFE’s Center for Critical Minerals Strategy, the Key Minerals Forum, the Zero Emission Transportation Association, Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions, Employ America, MineTech Ventures, Alta Resource Technologies, the Chamber of Progress, U.S. Critical Minerals, Nyrstar, the Alabama Mobility and Power Center (University of Alabama), South32 Hermosa, Alliance for Mineral Security, South Star Battery Metals Corp, the American Critical Minerals Association, and the Federation of American Scientists. • MIL-OSI USA: Wyden and Biggs Urge New Intel Chief Gabbard to Protect Americans’ Communications From Foreign Surveillance

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore)
    February 13, 2025
U.S. Must Resist Reported U.K. Efforts to Spy on Americans’ Encrypted Files, They Write in Bipartisan Letter
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Representative Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., today urged Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to protect U.S. communications from demands by the United Kingdom that will leave all Americans less secure and more vulnerable to spying by China, Russia, and other adversaries.
Wyden and Biggs wrote in response to reports that the U.K. ordered Apple to build a backdoor into encrypted iCloud backups to enable government surveillance of messages, photos and other files. Apple is barred from even disclosing the U.K. order to the public, or members of Congress, according to the Washington Post.
“If the U.K. does not immediately reverse this dangerous effort, we urge you to reevaluate U.S.-U.K. cybersecurity arrangements and programs as well as U.S. intelligence sharing with the U.K.,” Wyden and Biggs wrote. “The bilateral U.S.-U.K. relationship must be built on trust. If the U.K. is secretly undermining one of the foundations of U.S. cybersecurity, that trust has been profoundly breached.”
Creating a backdoor for the U.K. government would open a glaring new security weakness in all encrypted products subject to the reported order. Weakening American cybersecurity is particularly shortsighted following China’s “Salt Typhoon” hack of U.S. phone networks — which included tapping President Trump and Vice President Vance’s calls. In response, U.S. cybersecurity officials publicly recommended Americans to use encrypted services to secure their calls, texts, and other communications against foreign hackers and criminals.
According to a public report published by the U.K. Parliament’s intelligence oversight committee in 2023, the U.K. benefits greatly from a “mutual presumption towards unrestricted sharing of [Signals Intelligence]” between the U.S. and U.K. and that “[t]he weight of advantage in the partnership with the [National Security Agency] is overwhelmingly in [the U.K.’s] favour.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Merkley, Wyden Join Effort Demanding Trump Reverse Illegal Firing of Independent FEC Chair

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore)
    February 13, 2025
Washington, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden joined an effort led by California’s U.S. Senator Alex Padilla to demand President Trump rescind his unprecedented and illegal firing of Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chair Ellen Weintraub. The Senators also advised Trump to pursue the lawful process of consulting with the Senate on nominating a replacement for both Weintraub and future vacancies.
The FEC is an independent, bipartisan agency tasked with enforcing U.S. campaign finance laws. In the 50 years since it was created — in the wake of the Watergate scandal — a commissioner has never been fired by the President. Typical procedure, as outlined in the Federal Election Campaign Act, is to have a Commissioner depart upon confirmation of their replacement. The illegal, unprecedented firing of Chair Weintraub took effect immediately on February 6.
“Chair Weintraub must be able continue to serve in her role unless and until you use the lawful process of nominating a commissioner for the Senate’s consideration and that nominee is confirmed,” wrote the Senators. “Your letter seeking to remove a commissioner ignores the legal requirements that commissioners may not be removed without cause. This effort violates the procedure set in statute for replacing commissioners in the Federal Election Campaign Act and appears to be a bad faith effort to dismantle the only federal agency that protects the American people’s right to transparency in campaigns and elections.”
“Record spending in our elections, including from ultra-wealthy individuals who now serve at the highest levels of power, has placed the FEC’s responsibilities at the heart of maintaining a healthy democracy,” continued the Senators. “While years of deadlock at the Commission have hindered its ability to serve as an effective regulator, removing commissioners without cause moves beyond dysfunction to outright destruction.”
In addition to Merkley, Wyden, and Padilla, the letter was signed by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).
Full text of the letter is available here and below:
    Dear President Trump:
We write to strongly urge you to rescind your illegal attempt to remove Chair Ellen Weintraub from the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the independent and bipartisan agency charged with enforcing our campaign finance laws. Chair Weintraub must be able continue to serve in her role unless and until you use the lawful process of nominating a commissioner for the Senate’s consideration and that nominee is confirmed.
Your letter seeking to remove a commissioner ignores the legal requirements that commissioners may not be removed without cause. This effort violates the procedure set in statute for replacing commissioners in the Federal Election Campaign Act and appears to be a bad faith effort to dismantle the only federal agency that protects the American people’s right to transparency in campaigns and elections.
Removing an FEC commissioner without nominating a replacement is without precedent. With Republican Commissioner Sean Cooksey’s recent resignation to join your administration, regular order would be to consult with the Senate on a bipartisan basis and nominate a pair of Republican and Democratic commissioners for the Senate’s consideration. Unlawfully removing a commissioner with an existing vacancy, without consultation with the Senate on nominations to replace them, demonstrates an intent to ignore the Senate’s constitutional role and diminish the Commission’s ability to hold accountable potential violations of campaign finance law.
Chair Weintraub, a Democratic commissioner, has a strong record of seeking to enforce the law that regulates money in politics on a nonpartisan basis, including holding presidential campaigns accountable. Congress created the FEC over 50 years ago, in the wake of the Watergate scandal that eroded trust in our government. The FEC was designed to be free from the interference of those it might be regulating and to ensure the American people had insight into how money was being spent to influence its elected officials. The role of money in our elections has changed since the FEC was first created, particularly as the Supreme Court has issued decisions permitting dark money to infiltrate our elections. However, the need for balanced and dedicated commissioners who work on behalf of the country has remained unchanged.
Further, record spending in our elections, including from ultra-wealthy individuals who now serve at the highest levels of power, has placed the FEC’s responsibilities at the heart of maintaining a healthy democracy. While years of deadlock at the Commission have hindered its ability to serve as an effective regulator, removing commissioners without cause moves beyond dysfunction to outright destruction.
We call on you to rescind your unlawful letter and pursue the legal process for replacing commissioners in bipartisan consultation with the Senate.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Trump Making Valentine’s Day More Expensive This Year

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Rhode Island Jack Reed

WASHINGTON, DC – There are many ways to show one’s love on Valentine’s Day, but unfortunately, due to President Donald Trump’s tariff threats and refusal to help lower food prices, Americans will likely shell out record amounts this year for things like flowers, chocolate, or a dinner date at their favorite local restaurant.

U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) says it’s time President Trump follow through on his campaign promise to actually do something to help lower prices instead of making moves to increase costs on consumers and American businesses.

“Donald Trump pledged to fix the economy, but so far he’s made things worse.  He’s fixated on tax cuts for the wealthy and tariffs that economic experts say will only drive up prices for American consumers.  Since Trump took office, inflation is accelerating and groceries, gas, and rents rose over the last month.  His chaotic, destabilizing approach is sending prices in the wrong direction for families,” said Senator Reed.

During Trump’s second term in office, the consumer price index rose 3 percent in January from a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. It has increased from a 3-and-a-half year low of 2.4 percent in September.

Those planning to wine and dine their sweetheart this Valentine’s Day will likely face higher costs than last year for everything from flowers to food to fuel.  In fact, Trump’s focus on everything but the economy might leave Americans a little lighter in their wallet for things like:

Flowers: A majority of florists import their bouquet flowers from countries like Colombia and Mexico. Recent tariff threats by President Trump are already creating supply chain pressures and impacting prices on products coming into the U.S.  In order to stay afloat, some mom and pop flower shops are estimating they could have to raise prices as much as 10 percent on bouquets compared to last year’s Valentine’s Day.

Chocolate: It will be harder to find a sweet deal on chocolate this Valentine’s Day because chocolate prices are up about twenty percent as cocoa prices hit new heights.  Several factors contribute to the price hike, and not all are within Trump’s direct control. For instance, key cocoa-producing regions of West Africa have been impacted by severe weather, exacerbated by climate change. But Trump’s inaction and climate denial only exacerbates environmental and health hazards that don’t respect borders. The chocolate industry in the U.S. is also impacted by consolidation.  Trump has allowed anti-competitive industry consolidation in the past which leads to higher prices in the long run and allows huge companies to stomp out upstarts.

Restaurant Dining: Not only are menu prices rising under the Trump Administration, but due to Trump ignoring his pledge to take action on day one to address food prices, staples like eggs and entrée items like steak have shot up in the last month.

“Americans want the federal government to work effectively and they want action to lower prices and strengthen the economy.  Donald Trump needs to stop with the culture war sideshows and focus on the things he pledged to do — like lowering food, housing, and health costs.  Giving away massive tax windfalls for the wealthy and slashing Medicaid doesn’t lower prices.  So far, Trump’s policies have made things worse for many Americans.  He needs to change course,” concluded Reed.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Durbin Meets With Rural Health Care Providers

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Illinois Dick Durbin

    February 12, 2025

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today met with Illinois members of the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) to speak about the challenges of providing health care in rural communities.  During their meeting, Durbin and the health care leaders discussed the importance of preserving Medicaid funding from Republican proposals to cut health insurance benefits and coverage from millions of Americans.  They also discussed workforce initiatives to recruit and retain health care providers to serve in rural areas.  To help address the shortage of health care professionals, Durbin secured $1 billion in the American Rescue Plan for scholarship and loan repayment awards through the National Health Service Corps and Nurse Corps to build a more diverse pipeline of clinicians and recruit more health providers to serve in shortage areas.

Durbin also spoke about his Rural Hospital Closure Relief Act, which he introduced earlier this week.  The bipartisan legislation would update Medicare’s “Critical Access Hospital” (CAH) designation so more rural hospitals can qualify for this financial lifeline and continue to serve their communities with quality, affordable health care services. Small and rural hospitals are the backbone of their communities, and often the largest employers, contributing nearly $5 billion in direct spending on payroll, goods, and services in Illinois. Yet more than 135 rural hospitals have closed nationwide in the past dozen years, an estimated 50 percent of rural hospitals ran operating losses last year, and more than 400 hospitals are facing closure risk.

“Across rural Illinois, hospitals and clinics are the backbone of the local economy.  I am committed to helping recruit more doctors, nurses, dentists, and behavioral health providers, and ensure sustainable federal funding for these critical anchors of the community,” said Durbin.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Cantwell Reintroduces Bipartisan Bill to Hold PBMs Accountable for Driving Up Drug Costs

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Washington Maria Cantwell

Cantwell Reintroduces Bipartisan Bill to Hold PBMs Accountable for Driving Up Drug Costs
Prescription pricing middlemen inflate costs for consumers, making it harder for pharmacies to stay open and creating pharmacy deserts; WA state ranks sixth worst in the nation for pharmacy access
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, joined U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) in reintroducing the Pharmacy Benefit Manager Transparency Act, which would increase drug price transparency and hold Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) accountable for unfair and deceptive practices that drive up prescription drug prices. This legislation will reduce prescription costs for consumers and save taxpayers $740 million.
“Increasing prescription drugs costs have a devastating impact on the pocketbooks of American consumers,” said Sen.  Cantwell.  “For too long, Americans have been left in the dark while PBMs – the mysterious drug middlemen – manipulate prices.  Preliminary findings by the FTC found that the three biggest PBMs hiked prices of some lifesaving drugs by 1,000 percent.  This legislation will prevent PBMs from engaging in spread pricing and claw backs that harm consumers and independent pharmacies.  It’s time for Congress to reinforce FTC’s ability to hold PBMs accountable for deceptive and abusive practices.”
In Washington state, local pharmacies are struggling. The Washington State Pharmacy Association reported that a record 83 pharmacies shuttered across the state in 2023 and the first half of 2024 – in rural and urban areas alike – and an analysis by the Associated Press found that Washington state is sixth worst in the nation for access to pharmacies. Many of the region’s pharmacists point to the lower reimbursement rates on most of their prescriptions as a main reason for why their pharmacies are struggling, an issue caused by unfair PBM pricing practices.
In addition, new data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that inflation rose to 3 percent in January – including a record monthly increase in the cost of prescription drugs.
PBMs were initially formed to process claims and negotiate lower drug prices with drug makers, but today they the wield too much influence over the price and access to prescription drugs.  PBMs administer prescription drug plans for hundreds of millions of Americans and three PBMs control nearly 80% of the prescription drug market.
Pharmacy Benefit Managers are middlemen that manage nearly every aspect of the prescription drug benefits process for health insurance companies, self-insured employers, unions, and government programs. They operate out of the view of regulators and consumers — setting prescription costs, deciding what drugs are covered by insurance plans, and determining how they are dispensed – pocketing unknown sums that might otherwise be passed along as savings to consumers and undercutting local independent pharmacies. This lack of transparency makes it impossible to fully understand if and how PBMs might be manipulating the prescription drug market to increase profits and drive-up drug costs for consumers.
Key takeaways from a July 2024 interim Federal Trade Commission (FTC) staff report show that:
Market concentration and vertical integration have given PBMs significant power and control over what drugs are available to patients and at what price, without public transparency or accountability.
PBMs engage in self-preferencing by steering patients to affiliated pharmacies and away from independent pharmacies.
PBMs may be using their market power to force independent pharmacies into unfair contract terms and below-cost reimbursement rates.
PBMs and manufacturers enter into rebate agreements that may impair or block access to lower-cost drugs.
A subsequent interim staff report released a few weeks ago found that the three largest PBMs significantly marked up prices for specialty generic drugs—some by over 1,000% — and made an estimated $1.4 billion in income from spread pricing.
Last September, the FTC sued the three largest PBMs for engaging in anticompetitive and unfair practices that inflated the price of insulin drugs, blocked patients’ access to more affordable products, and shifted the cost of high insulin list prices to vulnerable patients.
The PBM Transparency Act would save taxpayers $740 million over 10 years.
The Pharmacy Benefit Manager Transparency Act of 2025 will:
    Prohibit unfair or deceptive practices.
Block PBMs from engaging in spread pricing, unfairly reducing or clawing back drug reimbursement payments to pharmacies, and unfairly charging pharmacies more to offset federal reimbursement changes.
Incentivize fair and transparent PBM practices.
Provide some exceptions to liability for PBMs that pass along 100% of rebates to health plans or payers and fully disclose prescription drug rebates, costs, prices, reimbursements, fees, and other information to health plans, payers, pharmacies, and federal agencies.
Improve transparency and competition by requiring PBMs to report:
The amount of money they obtain from spread pricing, pharmacy fees, and clawbacks.
Any differences in the PBMs’ reimbursement rates or fees PBMs charge affiliated pharmacies and non-affiliated pharmacies.
Whether and why they move drugs to a higher-cost formulary tier.
Direct the FTC to report to Congress its enforcement activities and whether PBMs engage in unfair or deceptive formulary design or placement.
Authorize the FTC and state attorneys general to enforce the bill.
Protect whistleblowers from being fired or reprimanded for bringing violations to light.
Sen. Cantwell has worked for years to bring transparency to the PBM industry and reduce drug costs for consumers.  She first introduced the bipartisan Pharmacy Benefit Manager Transparency Act in May 2022 with Sen. Grassley and again in 2023.  Sen. Cantwell led passage of the bill in the Commerce Committee in 2022 and again in March 2023, and vowed to keep  fighting until the bill becomes law.  She led a press conference at a Seattle pharmacy in October 2023 and called for the bill’s passage by the Senate in June 2024, and again in July following the damning FTC report.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Sen. Lee, Rep. Comer Introduce a Bill to Fast-Track Pres. Trump’s Government Reorganization Plans

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Utah Mike Lee

WASHINGTON—Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer (R-KY) today introduced the Reorganizing Government Act of 2025. This legislation ensures Congress takes an up or down vote on government-wide reorganization plans submitted to Congress by President Donald Trump to streamline government operations and better serve the American people.
“This legislation allows the President to use his constitutional authority as Chief Executive to reorganize federal agencies, eliminate weaponization, and right-size the government to better serve the American people,” said Sen. Lee. “Congress cannot afford to sit on its hands in this fight. Reauthorizing presidential reorganization authority is the most comprehensive tool that the President can use to restore good governance to Washington.”
“Americans elected President Trump to reform Washington, and his team is working around the clock to deliver on that promise,” said Chairman Comer. “The federal bureaucracy has grown dramatically in size and scope, creating unnecessary red tape. We must cut through the inefficiency and streamline government to improve service delivery and save taxpayers money. Congress can fast-track President Trump’s government reorganization plans by renewing a key tool to approve them swiftly in Congress. The Reorganizing Government Act of 2025 does just that. I look forward to advancing this bill in the House Oversight Committee soon. We owe it to the American people to make government efficient, effective, and accountable.”
The federal government has expanded significantly over the past 200 years, leading to inefficiencies, redundancies, and bureaucratic obstacles. With a federal budget that has grown from $3.6 billion to $7.3 trillion and over 400 executive agencies, streamlining government operations is essential for cost savings and improved service delivery.
The Reorganizing Government Act of 2025 seeks to renew and extend the President’s authority to propose executive branch reorganization plans until December 2026. This legislation restores a reorganization authority that was last in effect in 1984, aiming to modernize and improve government efficiency. Under this bill:
Congress must vote on proposed reorganization plans within 90 days, using an expedited process that cannot be filibustered.
The President’s authority expands to include entire executive departments, not just agencies.
The bill prohibits reorganization plans that increase federal workforce size or expenditures.
The Reorganizing Government Act of 2025 has been endorsed by Heritage Action, Pacific Legal Foundation, and Job Creators Network.

“Thank you, Chairman Comer and Sen. Lee for introducing the Reorganizing Government Act of 2025 to empower the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the size and scope of government burdening small businesses and ordinary Americans. As the Trump administration and Department of Government Efficiency have uncovered, there is tremendous waste, fraud, and abuse in federal agencies and departments. This legislation will make it easier to eliminate this reckless spending, reduce the deficit, and return savings to taxpayers.” – Alfredo Ortiz, CEO of Job Creators Network

  • MIL-OSI USA: Sen. Scott Leads Effort to Ease Burdens on Small Businesses

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for South Carolina Tim Scott
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, introduced commonsense legislation to ease burdens and shield small businesses from excessive legal red tape. The Protect Small Businesses from Excessive Paperwork Act of 2025 would extend the filing deadline for businesses to report beneficial ownership information (BOI) until January 1, 2026, giving the U.S. Department of Treasury more time to educate business owners on the new reporting requirements, assess Biden administration BOI decisions, and ensure small businesses are not overburdened – and potentially held liable – with unclear and unnecessarily complicated regulations.
Senate Banking Committee members, including Senators Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Katie Boyd Britt (R-Ala.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Jim Banks (R-Ind.), and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), joined Senator Scott on the legislation. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and James Lankford (R-Okla.) also signed onto the bill.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and we need to ensure they have the necessary time and information to comply with reporting requirements from the federal government. This commonsense bill will ensure small businesses are protected and not overly burdened by unclear and unnecessarily complicated regulations – allowing them to focus on serving their customers while following the law,” said Senator Scott.
“The beneficial ownership reporting requirements of the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) are excessive and overly burdensome, particularly for small businesses,” said Senator Tillis. “This commonsense legislation delays these unreasonable standards until January 1, 2026 for small business owners, providing further time for the courts to continue their examination of the constitutionality of the CTA.”
“Wyoming’s small businesses are the cornerstone of our state’s economy, yet Biden-era red tape continues to threaten Main Street,” said Senator Lummis. “It’s time for us to dethrone Biden’s unelected bureaucrats and cut red tape to create an environment where small businesses thrive, not drown in a sea of regulations.”
“Alabama’s small businesses do more than just keep our state running — they employ our friends and neighbors, provide invaluable goods and services, and make our communities and state so special,” said Senator Britt. “This commonsense legislation would pare back unnecessary and costly regulations while providing needed clarity and reprieve to job creators across Alabama and the nation.”
“Small businesses create jobs and power our economy,” said Senator Ricketts. “They deserve fair and clear rules, not burdensome and costly regulations. This bill cuts red tape and ensures our job creators can focus on growing their businesses, not navigating bureaucratic hurdles.”
“Small businesses are the backbone of our rural communities, and with limited staff and resources, the current reporting requirements place an unnecessary burden on our businesses,” said Senator Moran. “Extending the filing deadline allows small businesses the additional time they need to comply with updated guidelines and avoid harmful penalties.”
Representative Zach Nunn (R-Iowa) led companion legislation in the House, which passed on Monday by a vote of 408-0.
“Iowa’s economy is driven by small businesses – more than half of Iowans are employed by Main Street,” said Representative Nunn. “D.C. bureaucrats insist businesses comply with onerous red tape without considering the burden it puts on business operations. That has to change. Thank you, Chairman Scott, for joining me in this fight to roll back unnecessary regulations and simplify requirements for job creators while still adhering to the law.”
BACKGROUND: The Corporate Transparency Act was signed into law as part of the FY21 National Defense Authorization Act and established new reporting requirements around beneficial ownership for businesses.
During implementation of the rule, the U.S. Department of Treasury Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) failed to notify small businesses of the new reporting requirements. According to a survey by the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), 80% of NFIB members have never heard of the new reporting requirements. Complicating matters further, according to the National Small Business Association (NSBA), the average small business owner will spend nearly $8,000 to comply with these new reporting requirements in the first year alone.
On January 23, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to block the enforcement of these filing requirements. Now, small businesses across the country are expected to comply immediately or face harsh penalties. The Protect Small Businesses from Excessive Paperwork Act of 2025 would extend the filing deadline until January 1, 2026.

RFK Jr. Has Troubling History of Pushing and Profiting Off of Misinformation and Conspiracy Theories
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Committee on Finance, issued the following statement after Senate Republicans voted to confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services:
“At a time when the Trump administration is taking a sledgehammer to public health, New Mexicans deserve a chief health official who will put the health and well-being of all Americans over the Administration’s reckless and dangerous political agenda. In just a few weeks, we have seen President Trump cut spending for lifesaving medical research, lock critical Medicaid payment portals, and play politics with American lives. Mr. Kennedy’s long and troubling track record of peddling misinformation and conspiracy theories will not help make America healthier. Instead, it will only add fuel to the fire created by President Trump.
“Throughout Mr. Kennedy’s nomination process, he made it abundantly clear that he will put his loyalty to President Trump over protecting health care for American families. During his nomination hearing, I pressed Mr. Kennedy on his commitment to defend health care programs from cuts pushed by President Trump. Not only did he demonstrate significant confusion regarding Medicaid, but he also refused to protect it from cuts. Mr. Kennedy will not work to serve the American people and protect public health; he will be a rubber stamp for President Trump’s chaos, confusion, and cruelty.
“Mr. Kennedy has shown he is willing to play politics with people’s lives to serve President Trump’s political agenda. His troubling history and lack of understanding of his role will undermine our public health and put the American people at risk of a public health crisis. I will fight to ensure New Mexicans have access to quality, affordable health care, and I am committed to holding Mr. Kennedy and the Trump administration accountable for threatening the health of Americans.”

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) issued the following statement today on the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to serve as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services:
“I’m a survivor of childhood polio. In my lifetime, I’ve watched vaccines save millions of lives from devastating diseases across America and around the world. I will not condone the re-litigation of proven cures, and neither will millions of Americans who credit their survival and quality of life to scientific miracles.
“Individuals, parents, and families have a right to push for a healthier nation and demand the best possible scientific guidance on preventing and treating illness. But a record of trafficking in dangerous conspiracy theories and eroding trust in public health institutions does not entitle Mr. Kennedy to lead these important efforts.
“This Administration – led by the same President who delivered a medical miracle with Project Warp Speed – deserves a leader who is willing to acknowledge without qualification the efficacy of life-saving vaccines and who can demonstrate an understanding of basic elements of the U.S. healthcare system. Mr. Kennedy failed to prove he is the best possible person to lead America’s largest health agency. As he takes office, I sincerely hope Mr. Kennedy will choose not to sow further doubt and division but to restore trust in our public health institutions.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, spoke on the Senate Floor late last night to reiterate his opposition to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Trump’s pick to serve as the next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Senator Welch detailed his concerns about Kennedy’s character, competence, and priorities. The Senator has previously expressed reservations about Kennedy’s nomination in the Senate Finance Committee.
“The bottom line here for me, on the question of any nominee, is character, competence, and priorities. And on all three of these, I come up short with respect to Mr. Kennedy. Aside from the fact that we could better, it’s hard, in many ways, to see how we could do worse. So, I would urge all of my colleagues to consider the consequences of their vote. A vote that would put a person of questionable character, a person of questionable competence, and a person of—in my view—bad priorities at the head of our health care system,” said Senator Welch.

ICYMI from Bloomberg: “Markwayne Mullin’s Personal Bond Propels Him to Trump Confidant”

Washington, D.C. – ICYMI, Bloomberg Government published the following story this morning crediting U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) as, “one of the most influential lawmakers in Trump’s second term.” Bloomberg notes Mullin’s position as a powerful nexus lawmaker among the White House, GOP House majority, and the Republican-led Senate. The story also includes that Mullin, “played a pivotal role” in getting some of Trump’s cabinet nominees across the finish line, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and HHS pick Robert F. Kennedy Jr., among others.
Read the full Mullin profile story from Bloomberg Government HERE and below:
Markwayne Mullin’s Personal Bond Propels Him to Trump ConfidantBy Ian Kullgren | February 13, 2025 5:00AM ET
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) is an unconventional leading ally for President Donald Trump. As Trump prepared to return to Washington, plenty of Republicans with higher profiles and deeper pockets were jockeying to be his congressional facilitator-in-chief.
To understand Mullin’s rise from congressman to senator to Trump confidant, it must be recognized this isn’t a relationship built on politics — rather one forged in the deeply personal throes of a tragedy deferred.
In early 2020, Mullin’s 15-year-old son, Jim, suffered a life-threatening blow to the head while wrestling, his pulse faint as paramedics airlifted him to a Tulsa hospital. When Trump learned what Mullin’s family was facing, he began calling.
    He never stopped.
“He was at rehab for 18 months,” Mullin said in an interview with Bloomberg Government on Capitol Hill. “The president called every week. He flew to Bakersfield, California, to see him. He offered to help us financially, which we didn’t need, but he offered to help us financially with it. He still asks about him. Every time we talk, he still asks how my boy is doing.”
“You just see a different side of the guy. Not everybody sees it.”
    ‘Significant Relationship’
Mullin’s bond with the president has positioned him to be one of the most influential lawmakers in Trump’s second term, with both a direct line to the president and congressional ties to help shape his legislative agenda. He stuck by Trump during the times when the president’s political career seemed over — through Jan. 6, a second impeachment, and the barrage of criminal charges. In doing so, as Trump returned to the White House, Mullin had demonstrated the attribute he values above all: loyalty.
“There’s no question he has a significant relationship with the president,” Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.), Mullin’s close friend and roommate in Washington, told Bloomberg Government. “I know that to be certain.”
On the surface, Trump and Mullin look like opposites. Trump, as a boy in New York, had a chauffeur, while Mullin grew up with six siblings in rural Oklahoma.
The Oklahoman wears square-toed cowboy boots, a look his male staffers copy but one Trump wouldn’t be caught dead in. “And no, I don’t play golf,” Mullin said.
Despite lacking the name recognition of some of Trump’s other allies, his close ties to the House — where he served for a decade before becoming one of the youngest senators at 45 years old in 2023 — give him a level of influence across the Capitol few senators have.
Mullin still leads a bipartisan workout group at 6:30 a.m. in the House gym, a group that included former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), who was confirmed on Wednesday as Trump’s director of National Intelligence, and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. It has become his forum for maintaining relationships and building new ones, Smith said.
“There’s not one senator over there that has better relationships with as many House members as Markwayne, and there is not a senator over there that campaigned more for Donald Trump,” Smith said.
    Frequent Fighter
At the same time, he’s one of Trump’s most effective attack dogs. He posts on X frequently — often more than a dozen times a day — defending the administration’s policies, talking up his nominees, and slapping down the “woke” mob out to get Trump.
He spent weeks on the road campaigning for Trump last fall, and as a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, he’s one of the few Native Americans in Congress — an attribute that has made him a credible attack dog in Trump’s anti-DEI crusade.
“I grew up in Indian Country, living on the same land my ancestors were forced to move to,” Mullin posted on X last month. “I was born with bowed [legs] and a bad speech impediment. I lived in a barn. I NEVER let that be an excuse.”
Mullin also played a pivotal role in getting some of Trump’s nominees across the line, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services, according to a senior White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal strategy. The official described him as working tirelessly and being “energetic” in advancing Trump’s goals.
“President Trump loves people who are fighters,” said Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.). “Clearly, Markwayne Mullin is a fighter.”
Mullin’s pugilistic nature was on show in 2023 when he threatened to fight Teamsters President Sean O’Brien during a committee hearing. The two nearly came to blows until Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) intervened. The clip went viral on social media, raising the profile of both men.
As far as the president is concerned, Mullin has distinguished himself as a resource, Justin Clark, a former Trump White House official who later worked for Mullin’s campaign, said. He is one of a few senators who had direct access to Trump, meaning he can call him directly rather than go through handlers, and has established a regular back-and-forth where the two exchange ideas.
Yet despite that access, Mullin doesn’t over-communicate — even as countless others constantly fight to get in the president’s ear.
Mullin said he talks to Trump a few times a week. The two had spoken that morning, he said. However, Mullin wouldn’t say what was discussed — offering a hint at why the relationship has blossomed.
“There’s a trust factor there, too,” he said.

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Pete Ricketts (Nebraska)
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) announced legislation that would urge our European allies to initiate the snapback of U.N. sanctions on Iran. Ricketts made the following comments while on a conference call with Nebraska media:
“Recently, President Trump took executive action to restore maximum pressure against Iran. He directed the Treasury and State Departments to try and drive Iran’s oil exports to zero – which will stop their ability to fund terrorism,” Ricketts said. “He also directed our UN Ambassador to pressure our allies to ‘complete the snapback of sanctions and restrictions on Iran.’ President Trump’s actions will make our country safer. But he can’t do it alone. Our allies, including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, also known as the E3, will need to do the same.
“That’s why I will soon introduce legislation pushing our European allies to initiate a snapback of U.N. sanctions on Iran. These snapback sanctions would include export controls, travel bans, asset freezes, and other restrictions on those involved in Iranian nuclear and missile activities,” Ricketts continued. “My legislation would deliver a strong message to our European allies: they need to step up. Iran’s possession of a nuclear weapon would threaten our security and the security of our allies. Snapback sanctions are key to ensuring that President Trump’s maximum pressure policy is successful.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: NEWS: Bipartisan Lawmakers Demand Trump Reinstate NLRB Member Wilcox

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Vermont – Bernie Sanders

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), Congressional Labor Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), Donald Norcross (D-N.J.) and Steven Horsford (D-Nev.), and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) led every Democratic senator and a bipartisan group of 213 Representatives in urging President Trump to immediately reinstate National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Member Gwynne Wilcox. The lawmakers called on the president to restore the NLRB’s ability to protect the rights of American workers to organize and collectively bargain, which were already impaired by understaffing at the agency, and are now effectively lost the lack of quorum on the NLRB.

“We are writing to express our deep frustration at the unprecedented and illegal firing of National Labor Relations Board Member Gwynne Wilcox and the negative impact this will have on working people across the country,” wrote Sanders and the lawmakers. “This firing violates the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), renders the Board unable to effectively enforce federal labor law, and profoundly undermines the independence of the agency.”

Congress created the NLRB nearly 90 years ago as an independent, non-partisan federal agency to protect workers nationwide by enforcing the NLRA, which guarantees the rights of workers to join together in collective action, including by organizing unions, negotiating contracts, and going on strike. The lawmakers pointed to specific federal statute that restricts the president’s ability to remove NLRB members for reasons other than neglect of duty or malfeasance. They also clarified that Wilcox’s firing without a hearing or cause expressly violated that law.

“Workers rely on the NLRB to safeguard their rights to organize and collectively bargain to better their working conditions,” continued the lawmakers. “However, by firing Member Wilcox and leaving the five-seat NLRB with only two Members, you have left the Board without a quorum and effectively shut down its decision-making ability. This simply encourages bad employers to violate the law and trample on workers’ rights, while workers subjected to illegal union-busting will face significant delays in receiving the justice to which they are entitled.”

Since Trump fired Wilcox, grocery store workers in Philadelphia have already seen their labor rights eroded as large corporations are allowed to violate labor law with no recourse available for their employees. After Whole Foods workers voted overwhelmingly to form a union, the company, owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos, is “attempting to exploit some of the disruption Trump has caused,” according to the Washington Post, by not abiding by the outcome of the union election.

“We urge you to reverse your decision and to immediately reinstate Member Wilcox to the NLRB to ensure that working people are afforded the protections to which they are entitled under the law,” concluded Sanders and the lawmakers.

  • MIL-OSI USA: In Senate Budget Committee, Republicans Block Murray Amendments for Bipartisan Approach to Spending, Affirming Congressional Spending Authority, Reversing NIH Cuts, Transparency & Accountability for DOGE, and More

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Washington State Patty Murray
ICYMI: Senator Murray Remarks at Senate Budget Resolution Markup: Blasts Roadmap to Devastating Cuts, Calls for Budget Hearing with Musk – MORE HERE
Washington, D.C. — Today, at the Senate Budget Committee’s mark up of Senate Republicans’ budget resolution, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and a senior member and former Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, put forward six amendments to steer Republicans toward a bipartisan approach to spending, affirm Congress’ power of the purse, reverse massive arbitrary cuts to NIH, deliver transparency into the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and more. Republicans unanimously opposed every amendment Murray and other Democrats offered.
MURRAY AMENDMENT 01: Senator Murray first proposed an amendment to address defense and nondefense needs equally—tackling national security concerns and challenges at the border alongside priorities like supporting our veterans, biomedical research, child care, agriculture, and more—noting that such investments should be a part of ongoing bipartisan topline negotiations between appropriators. Rather than the $342 billion Republicans are proposing in mandatory funding through the partisan reconciliation process, Murray’s amendment would have provided $171 billion in discretionary funding for defense and $171 in discretionary funding for non-defense needs.  Unlike the partisan approach taken by Republicans, the funding under the Murray amendment would be available to address a range of critical needs, including but not limited to national security and the border.
“Democrats share many of your concerns about investing in our national security, providing more resources to address the challenges at the border, and making sure we counter China,” said Senator Murray of her amendment to equally divide the proposed spending toward defense and non-defense priorities. “While also wanting to make sure we address critical areas like supporting veterans, agriculture, wildfires, disaster response, biomedical research, child care, and much more. So, the approach in my amendment is to say we should work together on a bipartisan basis – and really this should be part of the topline conversations we are having now as we hurtle toward the March 14th funding deadline. I want to make clear Democrats remain at the table on the FY 2025 topline – but it is getting pretty lonely for us when we see Republicans assume a trillion dollars for this year alone in unilateral DOGE cuts, remain quiet as Russ Vought and the administration continues to unlawfully impound funds, and now propose to jam through $342 billion in funding for your priorities on a partisan basis—while I am trying to negotiate in good faith a bipartisan, four-corner topline deal for fiscal year 2025. I would urge my Republican colleagues to get serious and keep your eye on the ball regarding the funding lapse on March 14th, not to mention the sequester cuts at the end of April.”
MURRAY AMENDMENT 06: Senator Murray pressed her colleagues to pass an amendment to stand up to the Trump Administration and affirm Congress’ power of the purse which Republicans all unanimously opposed.
“This is not a partisan issue—it is about upholding our laws and Congress’s constitutional authority over federal spending,” said Senator Murray of her amendment to affirm Congressional spending authority. “The Constitution grants Congress—not the President—the power of the purse. This has been affirmed time and again—by: The Supreme Court, Congress, The Government Accountability Office, and others. And yet, Trump, Elon Musk, and Russ Vought have been holding up huge chunks of funding that Congress passed—often on a bipartisan basis. When Presidents ignore our spending laws and the power of the purse our Constitution gives Congress—not the president—it doesn’t just block funding for the American people, it erodes the trust necessary for bipartisan negotiations in Congress. As I have emphasized, Members of Congress—on both sides—must know a deal is a deal. This amendment is about protecting the integrity of our democratic process—our most fundamental checks and balances. Every Senator—Republican or Democrat—should support this amendment to preserve Congress’s authority and maintain the trust necessary for effective governance.”
MURRAY AMENDMENT 17: Senator Murray also offered an amendment to reverse the Trump Administration’s indiscriminate cut to biomedical research and the lifesaving work supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at research institutions across the country—which no Republican spoke in opposition to during debate, but every Republican voted in opposition.
“On Friday night the Trump Administration announced it was implementing a policy to arbitrarily cut National Institutes of Health funding that supports biomedical research at institutions across the country,” said Senator Murray of her amendment to reverse Trump’s proposed policy on indirect costs. “In capping indirect cost rates at 15 percent for NIH-funded grants, this policy would cut funding that is essential to conducting research – such as operating and maintaining labs and research facilities. That is in clear violation of our annual appropriations bills, which have included an explicit prohibition on NIH implementing a policy exactly like this since fiscal year 2018. Fortunately, a court has temporarily paused the policy, but let’s be clear, if the Trump administration were to be successful in gutting NIH funding in this way, it would be absolutely catastrophic for lifesaving research patients and families are counting on, including lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutch in my home state of Washington, and at so many other institutions in Red and Blue states nationwide.”
“Research would come to a halt, sick kids would not get the treatment they need, and clinical trials would shut down abruptly,” Murray continued. “Our commitment to supporting basic research infrastructure—which this policy does—is what helped make the American research enterprise the best in the world.  This is funding that helps produce medical breakthroughs and change patients’ lives and ensure that the U.S. continues to be the global leader in biomedical research. NIH is an important economic driver in just about every single one of our states—creating jobs and spurring innovation.”
MURRAY AMENDMENT 05: Senator Murray pushed for passage of an amendment to have the Senate request the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to review, audit and report back within 90 days on DOGE, including the appropriateness of the authorities and finances under which it is operating; internal controls and compliance with appropriations, data privacy, and other laws; the hiring, vetting, and security clearance of its employees, special government employees, and volunteers; appropriateness of actions taken to cancel contracts, reassign or otherwise change the status of federal employees; and any other areas deemed appropriate by the Comptroller General. Every Republican voted no.
“My amendment requests the Government Accountability Office to review, audit and report back within 90 days on the so called Department of Government Efficiency so that we can understand its role, authorities, and impacts,” said Senator Murray of her amendment to provide some level of transparency into DOGE. “Mr. Chairman, your Mark assumes $1 trillion in savings over the remaining seven to eight months in 2025. That is an astronomical amount of savings to achieve in a very short amount of time and with absolutely no detail provided to us. Those savings would appear largely to come from DOGE, which is operating throughout the government without any authorization from Congress, without any normal disclosure of people, processes, or conflicts, and really with no accountability whatsoever. Whether you support some actions of DOGE or not, you should support transparency and accountability to Congress and the American public. Elon Musk and DOGE have already tried to shut down USAID, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and we are told it is now targeting the Department of Education, with the President saying he wants Musk over at the Pentagon next. None of this is normal – not DOGE, the involvement of an unelected billionaire, the vast influence it has, or the actions they have taken to date with little or no input from Congress.”
“Let’s be clear—no one voted to let an unelected billionaire decide what bills the federal government would or wouldn’t pay or whether our elementary schools and hospitals get funding, but President Trump is giving Elon the keys to the Treasury,” continued Senator Murray. “And, again, the lack of transparency into its people, processes, and potential conflicts should concern every one of us. So, my hope is with this amendment we can agree to some oversight of DOGE and ask Congress’s independent, nonpartisan watchdog, the GAO, to review DOGE and report back to us within 90 days. And if you are not supportive of this—I have to ask, what are you scared of finding out?”
MURRAY AMENDMENT 15: Murray also put forward an amendment to prevent federal disaster assistance from being included in the highly partisan budget reconciliation process and ensure that federal disaster relief funds go to the communities that need them when they need them.
MURRAY AMENDMENT 14: Murray also pressed to pass an amendment, modeled off her Veteran Families Health Services Act, to provide additional funding for improving the reproductive assistance provided by the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs to members of the Armed Forces, veterans, and their spouses or partners—particularly for IVF. Every Republican also opposed these amendments, notwithstanding their intention to significantly increase the size of our military through their reconciliation plan, which will result in even more servicemembers and veterans needing reproductive assistance.
Prior to consideration of amendments, Senator Murray underscored in her opening comments that the resolution Senate Republicans have put forth is a roadmap to devastating cuts to programs families count on every day—from Medicaid to SNAP to veterans benefits—so that Republicans can later pass more tax breaks for the ultra-rich. Senator Murray emphasized that right now Congress’ focus should be on addressing the fast-approaching March 14 funding deadline and addressing President Trump and Elon Musk’s sweeping, illegal funding freeze—not a partisan measure to gut investments in working people. She also called for Elon Musk to come before the Committee to discuss his already in-motion efforts to decimate programs people count on.

WATCH: Padilla Slams Republican Budget Proposal That Would Raise Costs for American Families

WATCH: Padilla criticizes Republican budget proposal that would cut critical programs to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Budget Committee, delivered opening remarks during a hearing on the proposed budget resolution for Fiscal Year 2025.

Padilla outlined the misguided budget proposal from Republicans to cut hundreds of billions of dollars in benefits Americans rely on to fund tax breaks for billionaires:

    • “The second Trump Administration has begun clearly laying the groundwork to cut crucial programs that American families rely on in order to fund yet another round of tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. … The budget is a reflection of our values and our priorities. And I want to talk about priorities. Not the President’s priorities. I want to talk about the American people’s priorities. I’ve heard over and over again that the outcome of last fall’s election was a mandate, and that the important takeaway from the election was Americans’ frustrations with a high cost of living. … Too many families, Republicans and Democrats, struggling to pay for groceries, to afford gas, struggling to pay the rent or the mortgage every month.”
    • “Folks, make no mistake, under these plans, life will be more expensive for working families and all for what? That’s really the big question I have. All for what? It’s crystal clear: to help pay for hundreds of billions of dollars in tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations. And to achieve this, President Trump and his allies here in Congress seem determined to slash the programs that American families depend on the most: Medicaid, nutrition assistance programs, Pell grants, affordable health care coverage, cancer research, investments in our energy sector, including for hydrogen, biofuels, and carbon capture.”

Padilla also highlighted the immense costs of mass deportations, and the essential contributions of immigrants to the U.S. economy. Undocumented workers make up nearly 14 percent of construction workers — and roughly 42 percent of our agricultural workforce. Trump’s mass deportations plan would lead to skyrocketing prices for food, goods, and services, exacerbate our workforce shortages, and could drop the United States’ GDP by 6.8 percent:

    • “Here’s an inconvenient truth for many, and that’s the fact that immigrants, both documented and undocumented, are also critical to the success of our economy, because the percentage of immigrants — documented, undocumented — who are violent criminals, is a very, very small percentage.”
    • “If President Trump gets his way with the mass deportations that are not focused just on violent criminals, here’s what American families can expect. Get ready also for more expensive fruit, more expensive vegetables, and that’s if grocery stores can successfully keep up with stocking the shelves. If you’ve been saving up for years to buy a home, get ready to pay more and wait longer. Why? Because construction will slow down, and prices will go up.”

As Republicans emphasize the need for American energy independence, Padilla stressed that the Trump Administration’s executive orders and the proposed budget resolution would undo the historic investments Congress made to diversify the energy sector:

    • “Undermining renewables isn’t just undermining energy independence. It’s a threat to our national security, and it’s a threat to the good-paying jobs we’ve created across the country in red states and blue states alike.”
