  • MIL-OSI USA: Schumer, Gillibrand Announce Over $11 Million In Federal Funding For Airports Across New York State

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New York Kirsten Gillibrand

Today, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced $11,195,520 in federal funding to strengthen infrastructure and rehabilitate facilities at four airports across New York State. The funding, granted through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airport Terminal Program, will finance projects that address reconstruction and expansion at New York’s airports. The projects include constructing and rehabilitating air traffic control towers, expanding airport terminals and roadways, and upgrading HVAC and security systems.

“When I became majority leader, I promised to deliver the federal funding needed to support much-needed infrastructure improvements at New York’s airports, and that is just what we delivered when created the Airport Terminal Program in our Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law. With this $11+ million in federal funding, long overdue upgrades such as new control towers and expanded terminals at airports from Long Island to Western NY are now ready for take-off!” said Senator Schumer. “Upgrading terminals means more jobs, increased safety, and smoother travel experiences, and I’m proud that the program is continuing to help New York reach new heights.”

“This significant federal investment of more than $11 million through the Airport Terminal Program will bring much-needed infrastructure modernization to airports across New York State,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Funding like this is vital for the safety and security of passengers and airport employees. I am proud to announce these awards and will continue fighting to deliver critical funding to airports across New York State.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Following Their Call For Accountability Forr Failures at Buffalo VA, Schumer, Gillibrand, Kennedy, Langworthy Announce Nationwide Review To Identify & Investigate Systemic Issues Within The VA’s Community Care Practices

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New York Kirsten Gillibrand

Investigation Will Help Ensure That No Veteran – In Buffalo Or Anywhere Else In The Country – Fails To Receive Desperately Needed Treatment Again

Following their call for accountability after egregious failures at the Buffalo VA left veterans waiting weeks or months to receive care, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Tim Kennedy, and Representative Nick Langworthy today announced a nationwide evaluation of the VA’s community care consult practices to root out systemic issues within the VA’s health care network.

At Schumer, Gillibrand, Kennedy, and Langworthy’s request, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) will be conducting a comprehensive review of the VA’s community care consult practices. The investigation will include a review of the VA’s practices around scheduling patient treatment, particularly for high-risk and complex conditions. It will also review practices around handling concerns raised by patients and health care providers in the case of delayed treatment.

“No veteran, in Western NY or anywhere in America, should experience failures like those that occurred at the Buffalo VA. We must make sure this unacceptable failure to provide the care our veterans need never happens again. This new independent investigation by the Government Accountability Office will conduct a top-to-bottom review of the VA’s nationwide practices,” said Senator Schumer. “We must put better infrastructure and oversight practices in place to protect veterans in Western NY and across the country. We will be watching the VA like a hawk to ensure changes are made and VA centers across the country deliver on their promise to our vets to provide them the top-notch care they have earned and deserve.”

“What happened at the Buffalo VA was unacceptable. Nothing should ever get in the way of veterans receiving desperately needed care,” said Senator Gillibrand. “I am glad that the Government Accountability Office is investigating the VA at my urging and I look forward to seeing the results of their investigation. I will continue to monitor this situation closely and fight to ensure that no veteran slips through the cracks.”

“I am pleased that the Government Accountability Office is moving forward with reviewing VA community care practices to ensure our heroes receive the quality and timely medical services they deserve,” said Congressman Kennedy. “I will continue to do everything in my power to uphold our duty of care and get the Buffalo VA back on track.”

“We must keep our nation’s promise to our veterans that when they get home, they get the care they earned and deserve — the failures that caused critical delays in care at the Buffalo VA are absolutely unacceptable,” said Congressman Langworthy. “This new investigation led by the Government Accountability Office will help us identify the problems that allowed this to happen and ensure it never happens again. I’ll be actively involved to make sure we hold the VA accountable and deliver real results for our veterans.”

According to a report from the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, critically ill patients at the Buffalo VA had their treatments postponed for months or even canceled entirely, despite concerns raised by patients and health care providers. In one case, a patient waited nine weeks for radiation therapy for a new cancer malignancy, despite efforts by the chief of oncology to get the community care team to schedule treatment. In another, a veteran died waiting for palliative radiation therapy that would have eased severe pain from stage 4 cancer. Following the shocking revelations of the report the lawmakers requested an independent investigation by the GAO into the VA community care practices that led to these failures to ensure better care for veterans both in Western NY and across the country.

Specifically, the GAO review will include:

    1. Oversight of medical centers’ adherence to Veterans Health Administration (VHA) requirements for processing consults for conditions considered high-risk or complex;
    2. Whether consults are appropriately prioritized and consistently processed within VHA’s timeliness requirements;
    3. Reviewing how medical facilities, VISN leaders, and the VHA Office of Integrated Veteran Care respond to concerns regarding delays in consult scheduling from providers, staff, patients, and their families and how this is built into VHA’s quality and risk management programs;
    4. Best practices to prevent and address leadership deficiencies within the community care scheduling process, including the prioritization of patient safety.

The full text of Senator Schumer, Gillibrand, Kennedy, and Langworthy’s original letter requesting this investigation by the Government Accountability Office is available HERE or below:

    Dear Mr. Dodaro:

On Friday, September 27th, the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General (“OIG”) released its findings following its inspection of the VA Western New York Health System in Buffalo, New York. The report – Leaders Failed to Address Community Care Consult Delays Despite Staff’s Advocacy Efforts at VA Western New York Healthcare System in Buffalo – found a shocking pattern of apathy and incompetence on the part of Department facility and community care leaders in addressing the needs of patients with complex and high-risk conditions.

As the report indicates, these delays caused or led to an increased risk of harm to the patients. One veteran passed away while waiting months to receive palliative care that would have helped manage cancer pain in their final months. Another patient waited nine weeks to schedule radiation therapy for a new cancer malignancy, despite efforts by the chief of oncology to get the community care team to schedule treatment. Another veteran in their twenties continued to suffer from seizures for another 10 months as they waited for a consult to be scheduled, the delay partially caused by a referral being canceled by the community care medical director. These are only some of the cases highlighted by an OIG report that identified incompetence and bureaucratic red tape that failed the veterans in Buffalo again and again.

The failure by the leadership at the Buffalo VA Medical Center must never occur again, and veterans across the United States must be reassured that they can receive timely and high-quality health care across the VA health care system.  Therefore, I request that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) conduct a review of Veterans Integrated Services Networks’ (VISN) community care consult practices. The review should include, but not be limited to:

    1. Oversight of medical centers’ adherence to Veterans Health Administration (VHA) requirements for processing consults for conditions considered high-risk or complex;
    2. Whether consults are appropriately prioritized and consistently processed within VHA’s timeliness requirements;
    3. Reviewing how medical facility, VISN leaders, and the VHA Office of Integrated Veteran Care respond to concerns regarding delays in consult scheduling from providers, staff, patients, and their families and how this is built into VHA’s quality and risk management programs;
    4. Best practices to prevent and address leadership deficiencies within the community care scheduling process, including the prioritization of patient safety;

I request a briefing on the preliminary findings with final results to be submitted on a date and in form mutually agreed upon. Please include recommendations, as appropriate, for agency or congressional action in your evaluation.

    Sincerely,

  • MIL-OSI USA: Lankford Introduces Stand with Israel Act to Combat Israel’s Persecution at UN

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Oklahoma James Lankford
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Jim Risch (R-ID) announced their intent to introduce the Stand with Israel Act when the Senate and House reconvene in November. This legislation would cut off US funding to United Nations (UN) agencies that expel, downgrade, suspend, or otherwise restrict the participation of the State of Israel.
“Israel deserves to have the world’s full support in their defense against unspeakable terrorism,” said Lankford. “Our greatest ally in the Middle East has faced vicious attacks since their founding in 1948, but the latest all-out assault from the Iranian regime and their terrorist proxies intends to wipe Israel off the map. I will not walk away from Israel as the world tries to justify terrorism.”
“Any attempt to alter Israel’s status at the UN is clearly anti-Semitic,” said Risch. “That said, if the UN member states allow the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization to downgrade Israel’s status at the UN, the US must stop supporting the UN system, as it would clearly be beyond repair. I am disgusted that this outrageous idea has even been discussed, and will do all we can to ensure any changes to Israel’s status will come with consequences.”
Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Steve Daines (R-MT), Mike Lee (R-UT), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), John Barrasso (R-WY), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Rick Scott (R-FL), John Kennedy (R-LA), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Ted Budd (R-NC), Susan Collins (R-ME), Tim Scott (R-SC), Josh Hawley (R-MO), John Thune (R-SD), and Deb Fischer (R-NE) also joined in support of this bill. This is companion legislation to bipartisan House bill HR 9394 led by Representative Mike Lawler (R-NY).
    BACKGROUND:
Reports indicate that the Palestinian Authority (PA) will attempt to downgrade Israel’s status at the UN.
The PA is able to do this after the UN General Assembly passed a biased resolution which enhanced the PA’s status at the United Nations on May 10, 2024.
The Stand with Israel Act would cut off US funding to UN agencies that expel, downgrade, suspend, or otherwise restrict the participation of the State of Israel. The bill is modeled after the current prohibition of funding to any UN entities that elevate the status of the Palestinian Authority to a member state.

“Our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law keeps investing in Colorado and creating good-paying jobs. This time by improving travelers’ experiences at both Denver International Airport and the Colorado Springs Airport,” said Hickenlooper. “Giddy up!”
    Specifically, this funding includes:
$15 million for Denver International Airport to increase the efficiency and capacity of its baggage handling system; and

  • MIL-OSI USA: Remarks by Vice President Harris at the Vice President’s Residence

    US Senate News:

    Source: The White House
    Vice President’s ResidenceU.S. Naval ObservatoryWashington, D.C.
    12:58 P.M. EDT
THE VICE PRESIDENT:  So, yesterday, we learned that Donald Trump’s former chief of staff, John Kelly, a retired four-star general, confirmed that while Donald Trump was president, he said he wanted generals like Adolf Hitler had.
Donald Trump said that because he does not want a military that is loyal to the United States Constitution.  He wants a military that is loyal to him.  He wants a military who will be loyal to him personally, one that will obey his orders even when he tells them to break the law or abandon their oath to the Constitution of the United States.
In just the past week, Donald Trump has repeatedly called his fellow Americans the “enemy from within” and even said that he would use the United States military to go after American citizens.
And let’s be clear about who he considers to be the enemy from within.  Anyone who refuses to bend a knee or dares to criticize him would qualify, in his mind, as the enemy within, like judges, like journalists, like nonpartisan election officials.
It is deeply troubling and incredibly dangerous that Donald Trump would invoke Adolf Hitler, the man who is responsible for the deaths of 6 million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Americans.
All of this is further evidence for the American people of who Donald Trump really is.  This is a window into who Donald Trump really is from the people who know him best, from the people who worked with him side by side in the Oval Office and in the Situation Room.
And it is clear from John Kelly’s words that Donald Trump is someone who, I quote, “certainly falls into the general definition of “fascist,” who, in fact, vowed to be a dictator on day one and vowed to use the military as his personal militia to carry out his personal and political vendettas.
Donald Trump is increasingly unhinged and unstable.  And in a second term, people like John Kelly would not be there to be the guardrails against his propensities and his actions.  Those who once tried to stop him from pursuing his worst impulses would no longer be there and no longer be there to rein him in.
So, the bottom line is this.  We know what Donald Trump wants.  He wants unchecked power.  The question in 13 days will be: What do the American people want?
         Thank you.

CARSON CITY, NV – Today, U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) announced the State of Nevada will receive a $10 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to enhance the safety and functionality of the Marlette Lake Dam, reducing the risk of a dam breach during an earthquake.
“When we invest in Nevada’s infrastructure, we are investing in the safety of our local communities and helping create good-paying jobs,” said Senator Rosen. “I’m proud to announce that $10 million in federal funding is coming to Northern Nevada to upgrade the Marlette Lake Dam and help make it more resilient against future earthquakes. I’ll continue fighting to ensure Nevada gets its fair share of resources to keep our communities safe.”
“I am proud to see these federal funds come into our state to make essential improvements to the Marlette Lake Dam and better resist an earthquake,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “These funds will help protect our water supply in Storey County and Carson City while keeping Nevadans safe and healthy. I’ll keep working with Senator Rosen to continue modernizing Nevada’s infrastructure and ensuring Nevadans have the resources they need to recover from natural disasters.”
Senators Rosen and Cortez Masto worked to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to create good-paying jobs and upgrade Nevada’s infrastructure. They are committed to ensuring Nevadans have access to resources in the face of natural disasters. Both Senators successfully pushed President Biden to issue a Major Disaster Declaration for numerous counties in Nevada in the wake of unprecedented winter storms. Senators Rosen and Cortez Masto also joined their  colleagues in asking the White House for federal funds to help Nevada fight wildfires and extreme drought.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Department of Veterans Affairs Implements Rosen’s Bipartisan Law to Strengthen Cybersecurity of Veterans’ Personal Information

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV)

Senator Rosen’s Bipartisan Strengthening VA Cybersecurity Act Required the Department to Obtain An Independent Cybersecurity Assessment And Submit A Plan To Congress To Address Cyber Vulnerabilities
LAS VEGAS, NV – U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) announced that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has implemented her bipartisan law to strengthen the cybersecurity of veterans’ personal information and data. Her Strengthening VA Cybersecurity Act, signed into law in 2022, directed the Secretary to obtain an independent cybersecurity assessment of VA information systems, and submit to Congress the findings and a remediation plan to address the cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Following the recent completion of that assessment, the VA has submitted a detailed plan to Congress on how it will address vulnerabilities.
“Our veterans rely on the VA to access medical care, benefits, and other critical services, and we must ensure their most personal information is protected from bad actors,” said Senator Rosen. “I worked across party lines to pass bipartisan legislation to protect Nevada veterans’ information, and I’m glad to see that the VA is implementing it by submitting a report to Congress outlining cybersecurity vulnerabilities and their plan to address them. I’ll continue working with the VA to make sure they address these vulnerabilities identified.”
Senator Rosen has been leading bipartisan efforts to deliver for Nevada’s veterans. Last month, she helped pass bipartisan legislation to allocate billions of dollars for PACT Act benefits. Earlier this year, she helped introduce bipartisan legislation to officially authorize the construction of a new VA hospital in Reno, which followed Senator Rosen’s successful push with Senator Cortez Masto to include the hospital in the President’s 2024 Budget Request. She also introduced bipartisan legislation to permanently maintain a helpline for veterans to obtain information and assistance with VA services, which is included in this year’s Senate version of the National Defense Authorization Act. Senator Rosen secured funding to increase access to affordable housing for veterans, continue building Nevada’s first national veterans cemetery in Elko, and increase funding for veteran’s access to telehealth in the last bipartisan government funding package.

Old Town, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at the grand opening of Global Secure Shipping’s (GSS) second manufacturing facility in Old Town.  With the opening of today’s facility, GSS now has 32,500ft in total manufacturing space to produce its state-of-the-art secure cargo containers using patented technology first developed at the University of Maine (UMaine).
Today’s event also celebrated the company’s selection for a $4.1 million Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contract to produce and test the next generation of secure cargo containers.
Joining Senator Collins at the grand opening were U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy Dr. Laura Taylor-Kale, UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy, GSS CEO Robert Lindyberg, Ph.D., and Executive Director of GSS and UMaine engineering professor Dr. Habib Dagher.
“This is a great day for our State, for our nation, and for the security of cargo shipping around the world,” said Senator Collins during her remarks.  “The project we celebrate today is about seaport security.  But it also is about transitioning from research and development to manufacturing to create new industries, with new opportunities and good jobs.  GSS is in the vanguard of that transition.”
“Most of all, this is about the innovative spirit of Maine and our maritime heritage, with our University, GSS, and a skilled local workforce joining together to achieve something truly remarkable.  Congratulations on this great accomplishment,” Senator Collins concluded.
GSS was founded in 2018 to commercialize the hybrid composite secure shipping container technology developed at UMaine. As a senior member of the Appropriations Committee and now Vice Chair, Senator Collins helped secure funding for UMaine to research this technology, as well as funding for DHS that led to GSS’s $4.1 million contract.
Senator Collins attended the groundbreaking for this facility in September 2023.

    October 23, 2024
OMAHA, NE – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC), joined Senators Deb Fischer (R-NE) and Jim Risch (R-ID), Ranking Member of SFRC, to announce their intent to introduce the Stand with Israel Act when the Senate reconvenes in November. This legislation would cut off U.S. funding to the United Nations (UN) and stop support to agencies that expel, downgrade, suspend, and restrict the participation of the State of Israel.
“The United States will not stand by and allow the rampant antisemitism at the United Nations to go unchallenged,” said Senator Ricketts. “Downgrading Israel’s membership at the UN should be seen as an attack on an American ally. Should the UN embrace this diplomatic terrorism, the United States will respond accordingly and must end its support for the UN system.”
“Diminishing Israel’s status within the UN would be a slap in the face to democracies across the globe. It is shameful for an organization supposedly promoting international peace and security to punish a democracy fighting for survival,” said Senator Fischer. “The U.S. should not support any organization that attempts to restrict the participation of the State of Israel.”
“Any attempt to alter Israel’s status at the UN is clearly anti-Semitic,” said Senator Risch. “That said, if the UN member states allow the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization to downgrade Israel’s status at the UN, the U.S. must stop supporting the UN system, as it would clearly be beyond repair. Text of the legislation can be found here.
    BACKGROUND
Recent reports indicate that the Palestinian Authority (PA) will attempt to downgrade Israel’s status at the UN. The PA can do this after the UN General Assembly passed a resolution which enhanced the PA’s status at the United Nations on May 10, 2024. The Stand with Israel Act would cut off U.S. funding to UN agencies that expel, downgrade, suspend, and restrict the participation of the State of Israel.

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA)
WASHINGTON – To combat discrimination against gun owners, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) is supporting theFirearm Industry Non-Discrimination (FIND) Act to stop the federal government from entering into contracts with entities that promote anti-Second Amendment policies.
Because of her tireless commitment to protecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners, Senator Ernst recentlyearned an “A+” rating from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).
This summer, Ernst crushed some clays at Ingawanis Adventure Base in Bremer County.
“Taxpayers should not be funding groups that are actively working to erode and eliminate their God-given right to protect themselves and their families,” said Ernst. “The Second Amendment is foundational to this country and under no circumstance should the federal government be doing businesses with those looking to infringe upon the Constitution. I will always stand up for gun owners and protect their rights from gun grabbers in Washington.”
“We’re thankful for Senator Ernst’s focus on protecting the rights of lawful citizens practicing their Second Amendment. Her support of the FIND Act will halt discriminatory practices against the firearm industry in their tracks. We look forward to continuing our work with Senator Ernst to expose and correct the infringement of our Constitutional rights,” said John B. McLaughlin, Iowa Firearms Coalition Chairman.
“Under the Firearm Industry Non-Discrimination (FIND) Act, ‘woke’ corporations that choose to use their financial might to deny essential services to members of the firearm industry would no longer benefit from taxpayer-funded federal contracts. We thank Senator Ernst for supporting the FIND Act and for her commitment to preserving and protecting the Second Amendment rights of her constituents and the industry that makes the exercise of those rights possible. It is because of her efforts that Senator Ernst earned an A+ on the 2024 NSSF Congressional Report Card, which is a comprehensive analysis of our elected representatives’ positions on firearm and ammunition industry priorities in the 118th Congress,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel.
“It’s been a joy to work with Sen. Ernst and her office to protect the 2nd Amendment and to know that we woman have such a strong supporter in her,” said Jeanelle Westrom, Iowa Director of Women for Gun Rights.
Click here to read the bill.
    Background:
Senator Ernst has fought back against numerous attempts by the Biden-Harris administration to infringe upon the Second Amendment.
She led the FIREARM Act to protect gun dealers’ Second Amendment rights in the face of the Biden Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ (ATF) “zero tolerance” crackdown.
Ernst worked to hold the ATF accountable by standing up against ATF agents knocking on the doors of private residences, where many law-abiding gun owners live, and asking them to display a recently purchased firearm.
She has also exposed the ATF’s routine misclassification of administrative positions as law enforcement jobs, improperly costing the federal agency millions in pay and enhanced benefits over a five-year span.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Murphy To Cosponsor Legislation To Hold Georgian Officials Accountable For Corruption, Human Rights Abuses, And Anti-Democratic Efforts

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Connecticut – Chris Murphy

    October 23, 2024

WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Tuesday announced his intention to join U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Jim Risch (R-Id.) in introducing the Georgian People’s Act, legislation that would hold Georgian government officials and individuals responsible for corruption, human rights abuses, and efforts to advance the foreign influence law or facilitate its passage.
The legislation is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), and U.S. Senators Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Dan Sullivan (R-Ark.), Angus King (I-Maine), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and George Helmy (D-N.J.) have also requested to join the Senators’ Georgian People’s Act when the Senate reconvenes in November.
“Russia’s use of corruption, propaganda and violence doesn’t just threaten Georgia’s future as a strong, independent nation—it puts the entire international order at risk of collapse,” said Murphy. “As Putin and his cronies try to undermine Georgia’s democracy and impose a government that will do their bidding, this bipartisan legislation makes clear the United States stands firmly with the Georgian people who overwhelmingly support democracy and a future in Europe.”
“I’m pleased that a number of my Senate colleagues recognize the urgency of the situation in Georgia and have agreed to cosponsor the Georgian People’s Act in the U.S. Senate,” said Shaheen. “Together, we’re sending a strong message that there is robust bipartisan support for our legislation and our posture towards Georgia and support for the Georgian people’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations will remain unchanged no matter which party controls Washington.”
“This bill sends a strong message from Congress that the U.S. is united behind the Georgian people as they pursue a future in the transatlantic community,” said Risch. “We recognize the Georgian people’s desire for European integration and are committed to making U.S. policy that supports the opportunity for them achieve it.”
“The Georgian government’s embrace of pro-Russian policies and away from a Euro-Atlantic future is concerning,” said Tillis. “I am proud to co-sponsor this bill to hold the Georgian government officials accountable and reaffirm the U.S. support for the Georgian people.”
“The Georgian government’s shift towards Russia’s authoritarian regime and away from its European partners is alarming,” said Cornyn. “This legislation would hold Georgia’s corrupt leaders accountable and signal to the Georgian people that the U.S. stands with them in their pursuit of a Euro-Atlantic future.”
“While the Georgian people have demonstrated overwhelming support for a democratic future, their government has become increasingly under Russia’s influence—most recently passing a law to restrict civil society and free speech,” said Romney. “Our legislation would hold Georgian government officials responsible for corruption and demonstrate the United States’ commitment to the Georgian people’s fight for democracy and rule of law.”
“A free, secure, sovereign Georgia, aligned with the US and its allies is in the national interest, both of Georgia and the United States,” said Sullivan. “Georgia’s apparent drift back into Russia’s orbit is bad for the stability of the region. No one understands this better than the Georgian people themselves. According to polling from the International Republican Institute, 90% of Georgians want their nation to be part of the Western, free World, not the Russian World.”
“The United States stands with the Georgian people and their pursuit of a Euro-Atlantic future. The Georgian government’s recent efforts to align with Russia reject the desires of Georgians and pose a significant threat. Our bipartisan bill would hold Georgian government officials accountable for corruption and express our support for the transatlantic aspirations of the Georgian people,” said Young.

The Senate and House Appropriations Committees Advanced Funding Bills with Resources for Minnesota Projects Secured and Backed by Klobuchar, Smith

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Tina Smith (D-MN) announced that the Fiscal Year 2025 federal budget bills that passed the Senate and House Appropriations Committees includes projects to benefit St. Cloud and surrounding communities. These projects would invest in public infrastructure, emergency services, and workforce development. On September 26, the Senate and House agreed to avoid a shutdown and continue to negotiate on a final budget proposal. Klobuchar and Smith will fight to ensure these projects are included in that final year-end bill.

“From upgrading critical infrastructure to investing first responders, we worked with local leaders to secure resources important to St. Cloud and surrounding communities” said Klobuchar. “Once completed, these projects will improve quality of life for Minnesotans.”

“Those closest to an issue have the best solutions, and these projects were developed and designed to fit the specific needs of St. Cloud,” said Smith. “From expanding opportunities for students at SCTCC or upgrading our water infrastructure, to renovating the Cold Spring Fire Station, fixing Town Line and Heatherwood Roads, or helping Habitat for Humanity build more affordable housing, these projects will help strengthen our communities and I look forward to working with Senator Klobuchar to get them passed and signed into law.”

Klobuchar and Smith have successfully secured the following projects in the Appropriations Committee-approved bill:

    • $1,136,000 for the St. Cloud Technical & Community College to develop an Aircraft Maintenance Technician Certified Instructional Program Expansion.
    • $2,000,000 for the City of Big Lake’s Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements Project. Klobuchar and Smith requested the funding along with U.S. Representative Tom Emmer (R-MN).

    • $1,500,000 for the reconstruction of Town Line Road to meet current design standards for traffic levels, including six-foot paved shoulders, right turn lanes and safer roadsides and improving structural capacity to 10-ton axle weights. • $750,000 for the City of Princeton’s Mille Lacs County Joint Radio Simulcast Equipment Project.

  • MIL-OSI USA: ICYMI—Hagerty Joins Mornings With Maria on Fox Business to Discuss BRICS Summit, Biden-Harris Emboldening China, Stablecoin Bill

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Tennessee Bill Hagerty
NEW YORK CITY—United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), a member of the Senate Banking and Foreign Relations Committees and former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, yesterday joined Mornings With Maria on Fox Business to discuss yesterday’s BRICS Summit, the Biden-Harris Administration’s weakness towards China, and his stablecoin legislation to establish a clear regulatory framework for the regulation and supervision of stablecoin issuers.

    Partial Transcript
Hagerty on the BRICS Summit: “Were it not for the tremendous leadership void that exists today because of America’s exit from the international stage, we wouldn’t be seeing this happen. And under President [Donald] Trump, this would have never happened. They’ve expanded BRICS now to 32 nations, as you’ve said. This is all about Vladimir Putin trying to find a way to get around the type of sanctions regime that we will come back and put in place once President Trump is back in office. Interestingly, I noticed that the UN Secretary General Gutierrez is going to be there in Russia for this event. You know, were this event held anywhere else, Gutierrez, I think, would be obligated to enforce the arrest warrant that his own international criminal court has put out for Putin. It’s just shocking to me that these nations would step up and participate in this, and that Gutierrez himself would be involved in a situation where Iran is actually going to be brought into this group. It’s amazing. The only common bond, it seems, is that America’s not part of it, and they want to demonstrate their pushback. And the fact that the UN is engaged in this as well [is] really quite shocking and disturbing to me as it should be to all of us.”
Hagerty on China’s economic leverage against BRICS nations: “You mentioned China; that is another common bond here: China’s economic ties and leverage over these countries with the Belt and Road Initiative and the fact that they’re buying oil from Iran and from Russia. That is another common bond that these guys share. But if you think about how the Harris Administration would respond, look no further than what they did with the spy balloon that they allowed to fly over the entirety of the United States of America. And then send four cabinet members over to kowtow, just to beg them to come to San Francisco for a meeting, I’m very concerned. Americans should be deeply concerned what would happen and should Kamala Harris be put in a position to stand up to Xi. I’ve been with President Trump when he’s met with Xi. Xi respects Trump. President Trump will bring respect and order back to these types of relationships. I cannot imagine how Kamala Harris would stand up to that type of pressure.”
Hagerty on Obama’s former AG suing the Pentagon on behalf of a Chinse company: “This is exactly why President Trump has said we must drain the swamp. This is just another example of the revolving door. And the fact is that the first time this DJI was cited was back in 2017 when President Trump was in office—the Army took them down then—there’s no way that Loretta Lynch would be bringing the suit under the Trump Administration. But again, they’re trying to squeeze everything in that they can in the last days, the waning days of this Administration. You’ve got to ask yourself: who are they working for? Because every one of the foreign policies that Biden and Harris have pursued basically make China the net winner. We’ve got to stop this […] Ever since 2018, that’s been the case, because that’s what the Chinese National Security law says. Chinese companies that collect data anywhere in the world need to and have to expose that data to the Chinese intelligence services when asked. So, of course, that’s what it means. That’s the vulnerability that was seen back in the Trump Administration; that seems to be something that Loretta Lynch wants to undo and make these Chinese companies have access to the most sensitive data that our U.S. military would pick up. It’s unconscionable that she’d do this […] Barack Obama’s top law enforcement officer, the former Attorney General, is the one defending this Chinese company trying to get them off of this list, when she knows the exposure [and] the national security risk that would pose to America. It is just shocking.”
Hagerty on his stablecoin legislation to establish clear regulatory framework: “As you mentioned, this builds upon some excellent work that was done in the House of Representatives. I’ve come in and made some adjustments that I think it’ll make it easier to get through both bodies [in Congress]. The impact of this, though, actually gets back to the beginning of the story that you and I talked about. You think about the efforts that Vladimir Putin and these BRICS nations undertaking to get around the United States as the reserve currency of the world. This will actually strengthen our posture as a reserve currency. It will increase demand, not only for U.S. treasuries, but also the stablecoins will increase demand for U.S. dollars on a global basis. We need the proper regulatory framework in place here in America—we need legal certainty—the Biden and Harris Administration have done everything they can to destroy that sort of legal certainty. This will begin to chip away at the Democrats’ war on cryptocurrency and put us back in the driver’s seat when it comes to maintaining the reserve currency status that the dollar has enjoyed and should continue to enjoy […] The assumption is very clear that this legislation will move through and be ripe for a new Administration.”

‘The American public can see right through it.’
PHILADELPHIA, PA—United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), former U.S. Ambassador to Japan in the Trump Administration, today joined CNN News Central to discuss the latest outrageous smear campaign against former President Donald Trump and the Biden-Harris Administration’s failures in both the economy and foreign policy.

*Click the photo above or here to watch*
    Partial Transcript
Hagerty on his personal experience serving in the Trump Administration: “I’ll say this: I did serve with President Trump as U.S. Ambassador to Japan. We have more U.S. military stations there in Japan than any place else in the world overseas. President Trump came to visit me three times—we always met with our military there—and I never saw anything but the utmost respect, both President Trump’s respect for our military, and their love and respect for him. That’s what I know.”
Hagerty on John Kelly’s slanderous claims against Trump: “It’s wholly inconsistent with my experience with President Trump. I also have reason to doubt it because there’ve been articles published about ‘losers’ and the things that were supposedly said in Normandy. I called the Ambassador right away. Again, these are old stories that are being drug up, of course, within two weeks of the election. But when I called the Ambassador, she said [the claims were] absolutely not true [regarding] what was attributed to John Kelly [in 2020], 20 other staffers said that was the case as well. I think this is being brought up at a time to divert and deflect. Here’s the story: American people right now need to be asking themselves a very basic question: Are they better off today than they were when President Trump was in office? Kamala Harris is claiming all these things that she might be able to do, yet she’s done none of them for the past three and a half years. What we’ve got is a situation where Kamala Harris can’t find any place where she would differ from Joe Biden. Seventy two percent of Americans think that this country is on the wrong track. All they have to do is look back to the time when President Trump was in office; that debunks these claims. President Trump had our economy working. People respected us—nations respected us—we had people better off in every demographic group. And I think that’s why Americans are seeing President Trump’s polls move forward, and I think that’s why we see these desperate things coming out here at the last minute, again, within the last two weeks, citing something from the deep past. It’s irrelevant at this point. Americans need to know: Will [they] be better off? Seventy two percent of Americans say we’re on the wrong track right now; I think they’re ready for change […] Real wages [are] what I think most people care about. Real wages [are] what they care about, and they were better off [under Trump].”
Hagerty on the false claim that Trump doesn’t respect the military: “His record as commander in Chief debunks [these baseless claims] in my mind…Because why? He actually did have us in position where there were no wars. You have [President] Joe Biden as Commander in Chief; what did he do? He and [Vice President] Kamala Harris, the last in the room, made a terrible decision in Afghanistan that led to the death of 13 service members, very personal to me. One of them was Ryan Knauss, a Tennessean. And I had to call Ryan’s parents and tell them what happened. You think about it: Joe Biden is there at the return of the remains at Dover. He doesn’t even have time for them; he’s looking at his watch. And when he’s in debate, he tells the world that no military man or woman died under his watch. He just forgot about the 13 that died on his watch. That’s presidential disrespect; I don’t see that coming up. Instead, you have claims that cannot be verified from someone that obviously doesn’t like President Trump and was fired by President Trump […] President Trump is a patriot. He loves this country.”
Hagerty on Trump’s foreign policies having substantially greater success than Biden-Harris’ policies: “I’ve actually seen Donald Trump in the room with Vladimir Putin and with Xi Jinping, with [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi, with [Former Prime Minister Shinzo] Abe. He’s able to hold his own. I certainly don’t think Kamala Harris could do that. Donald Trump knows how to negotiate. He knows how to deal with world leaders, and he can deal from a position of strength. That’s what Americans need right now. That’s what Americans should be asking themselves this close to the election, is who will represent our nation? Who will put us back in a posture of strength? Donald Trump clearly can do that because he’s done it before. Under his watch, we had no major wars breakout. As soon as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris came back into office, we saw the exact opposite. We’ve got hot wars now in the Middle East—you see what’s happening in Ukraine and Russia…It’s a very bad situation that’s occurred over the past three and a half years. Kamala Harris could have done something about it if she were serious. Obviously, she didn’t, and I think the American public can see right through it.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: January 24th, 2025 Heinrich Joins Luján, Hawley to Reintroduce RECA to Give Nuclear Radiation Victims Compensation

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New Mexico Martin Heinrich
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) joined U.S. Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), along with U.S. Senators Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), and Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) to reintroduce their Radiation Exposure Compensation (RECA) Reauthorization Act to compensate Americans exposed to radiation by government nuclear programs.
Despite the Senate passing this bill last Congress, the House of Representatives failed to pass RECA reauthorization before its expiration deadline.
“It’s long overdue for Congress to pass an extension and expansion of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) that includes the Tularosa Basin Downwinders whose communities and families were harmed by the fallout from the 1945 Trinity Test, the uranium miners exposed to radiation in service to our national defense, and all other Americans who were directly impacted by our nation’s nuclear testing program,” said Heinrich. “Unfortunately, RECA languished in the House of Representatives last Congress due to Republicans’ refusal to put the bill on the floor. I remain determined to finally deliver justice, recognition, and compensation to the Americans whose livelihoods and health have been devastated by the long-term consequences of radiation exposure.”
“In New Mexico and across the country, thousands sacrificed to contribute to our national security. Today, individuals affected by nuclear weapons testing, downwind radiation exposure, and uranium mining are still waiting to receive the justice they are owed,” said Luján. “It is unacceptable that so many who have gotten sick from radiation exposure have been denied compensation by Congress. Despite having passed RECA legislation twice through the Senate with broad bipartisan support, and securing the support of the previous administration, I was disheartened that Speaker Johnson refused a vote on RECA to help victims. This Congress, I am proud to partner with Senator Hawley again to extend and expand RECA. RECA is a bipartisan priority and I am hopeful that we will once again get it through the Senate and hope the Speaker commits to getting victims the compensation they are owed.”
“The time to reauthorize RECA is now. The Senate has done this twice before and must do it again. For far too long, Missourians and others across America have suffered without compensation from their government. It is vital that we unite to pass this legislation now, and that the President sign it into law,”said Hawley.
Heinrich has reintroduced legislation to extend and expand RECA since his first Senate term, starting in 2013.
Last fall, Heinrich joined Luján, U.S. Representatives Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.), Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.), and Gabe Vasquez (D-N.M.), and advocates and survivors who traveled all the way across the country from New Mexico for a press conference calling on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to hold a vote on a Senate-passed bill that would strengthen the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA).
Heinrich also pressed Speaker Mike Johnson to immediately take up the Senate-passed and fully comprehensive RECA extension in bipartisan, bicameral letter. The letter, led by Luján, said in part: “We urge action immediately to strengthen the RECA program before its impending sunset in June 2024. The United States government exposed these Americans to radiation as part of our national security efforts through World War II and the Cold War. It is long past time that RECA is strengthened to give these Americans their recognition and compensation. Their livelihoods, often devastated by the long-term consequences of radiation exposure, depend on your leadership and commitment to rectifying past injustices. Let us honor the commitment we made to these citizens by ensuring they receive the support and recognition they so rightly deserve.”
Last March, Heinrich delivered remarks on the Senate floor urging his colleagues to pass bipartisan legislation to reauthorize and expand RECA. Later that day, Heinrich secured Senate passage of bipartisan legislation to reauthorize and expand RECA to compensate individuals exposed to radiation while working in uranium mines or living downwind from atomic weapons tests.

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New Mexico Martin Heinrich
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, released the following statement after voting against advancing the confirmation of President Trump’s controversial and unqualified nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth.
“Pete Hegseth’s dishonorable record of sexual assault and domestic violence, drunk and disorderly conduct in public, racist, sexist, and anti-LGBTQ+ remarks, disregard for the laws of war, and financial mismanagement of the small veterans organizations he once oversaw would disqualify him from leading any organization — let alone the Pentagon.
“This nominee’s embrace of torture tactics and disdain for the principles outlined in the Geneva Conventions and enshrined in U.S. law is also extremely alarming. As I wrote in the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on torture in 2014, ‘torture doesn’t work.’ It undermines our nation’s credibility on human rights, produces uneven and often questionable information, and wastes millions of taxpayer dollars. It is wrong in every sense of the word, and I will not support any nominee who even entertains going down that path again.
“This nominee’s confirmation represents an alarming abdication of the Senate’s constitutional duty of advice and consent. President Trump and my Republican colleagues are handing the keys to the Pentagon to this unqualified and unstable person, jeopardizing our national security and making us all less safe.”

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) announced that Hawai‘i will receive nearly $9.8 million in new federal funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support the ongoing recovery effort on Maui following the devastating fires. The funding, which Schatz helped secure, will help the community of Lahaina rebuild the Waiola Church, Hale Aloha Museum, the Old Lahaina Courthouse Building, and the Master’s Reading Room.
“Waiola Church is an important part of Lahaina’s history, heritage, and community,” said Senator Schatz, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “This new funding will help us restore some of Lahaina’s historic buildings and help bring this community back.”
In December 2024, Schatz secured an estimated $1.6 billion in new funding for Maui’s continued recovery, aimed at building permanent housing for survivors, in addition to almost $500 million to support economic development, small business needs, water infrastructure, and more. The funding was approved following efforts led by Schatz for more than a year to press the need for long-term disaster aid both in Congress and with the Biden administration.

“Once complete, the Cora Whitley Family Center will open up nearly 250 more spots at one of Tacoma’s best day cares — nearly doubling the previous capacity – and hire about 100 more people. The expanded day care will give more Tacoma parents the freedom to seek full-time jobs, helping the local economy grow and thrive. The new family center will also free up space in the Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center’s existing building, so the organization can provide more family resources, veteran services, and homeless outreach to uplift the community,” Sen. Cantwell said.
Sen. Cantwell advocated for and secured $3 million in funding for the project as part of the FY 2024 congressionally directed spending process. The Cora Whitley Family Center project was one of dozens of community-led projects across the state that received funding thanks to Sen. Cantwell’s efforts.
The Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center currently provides child care for about 250 children. The expansion will open up at least 242 more spots, and create more than 100 new jobs.
With child care moving to the new 32,000 sq. ft. building, the center will have more space in its current building for their many other services including parenting services like classes, a diaper bank, and free Sunday grocery store, as well as intervention and outreach services ranging from peer therapeutic drug court services, homeless street outreach, mental health services, veteran services, and substance support programs.
Sen. Cantwell is a strong advocate of expanding child care options in the State of Washington to meet the needs of individual communities. In June, she visited Rosemary’s Place in Dayton to meet with child care providers and discuss how to make care more accessible and affordable for families.

  • MIL-OSI USA: “America’s Best Deserves the Best” – Senator Hassan Outlines Risk Pete Hegseth Poses to U.S. National Security in Senate Floor Speech

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New Hampshire Maggie Hassan
WASHINGTON – In a speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) today outlined how Pete Hegseth’s lack of qualifications to serve as Secretary of Defense would put U.S. national security, and our men and women in uniform, at risk.
Some key quotes from the Senator’s remarks include:
“Unfortunately, it is clear that Mr. Hegseth does not have the skills, experience, record, or character to lead a department that has a budget of more than $800 billion, and is the largest employer of men and women in our country, and is tasked with safeguarding our nation’s security and freedom.”
“If Mr. Hegseth could not and did not effectively manage organizations with around 100 employees, surely no one can actually believe that he is ready to manage one of 3.4 million people.”
“In the past, when we have looked for leaders of our armed forces, we have searched for our country’s best and brightest; the most gifted minds of America’s boardrooms, the brightest stars to come out of West Point, the most revered public servants to serve in these halls… we did not need then, nor do we need now to turn to the green rooms of cable TV networks for the Secretary of Defense.”
“Surely the armed forces of the United States of America…the victors of the Ardennes, of Gettysburg, and Midway and a thousand places in between and since…surely, they need a leader who they can have full faith in; surely America’s best deserves the best.”
“There are strong, experienced, and able members of the President’s party whose views align with his who could be exceptional leaders of the Department of Defense. Mr. Hegseth is not one of them.”

Mister President, I rise right now and today for the purpose of joining my colleagues from both sides of the aisle in opposing Mr. Hegseth’s nomination as Secretary of Defense. I appreciate Mr. Hegseth’s military service, indeed when evaluating his nomination, his service was what I appreciated most about his background.
But unfortunately, it is clear that Mr. Hegseth does not have the skills, experience, record, or character to lead a department that has a budget of more than $800 billion, and is the largest employer of men and women in our country, and is tasked with safeguarding our nation’s security and freedom.
We take pride as Americans in the fact that our military is the very best. The standard of excellence and professionalism set by the men and women of our armed forces is central to our military’s success and our country’s success.
This high standard of competency and character, of both unmatched ability and uncommon virtue, is why America’s armed forces command the respect of our friends, the fear of our foes, and the abiding faith of freedom-loving people everywhere.
America boasts the greatest fighting force in the history of the world…the heroes who serve in our armed forces deserve a leader who is worthy of that greatness. And Mr. Hegseth is plainly not up to that task.
Like many of my colleagues, I have concerns regarding Mr. Hegseth’s character – the documented accusations about his excessive and uncontrolled drinking, his sexual harassment, sexual assault, and now, accusations of being abusive to his ex-wife.
It is ironic that Mr. Hegseth and some of my colleagues have dismissed these concerns as partisan, because sadly if this wasn’t a partisan confirmation process – for example, if my Republican colleagues were considering hiring Mr. Hegseth to join their staffs – we would all agree that these accusations would immediately be disqualifying.
Mr. Hegseth dismisses these multiple accusations from disparate people as “a coordinated smear campaign.” I don’t think that the concerns of his former colleagues, friends, and family should be quickly dismissed as smears. And many other of the nominees who are being considered by this body aren’t facing similar accusations even though there are people who vehemently oppose their confirmation. Which begs the question of why Mr. Hegseth continues to face multiple, similar accusations from different sources. But for a moment, let’s do as Mr. Hegseth asks and put aside these accusations.
    Let us say for a moment that those who occupy the highest positions in public life shouldn’t be above reproach, though indeed they should;
    Let us say that our service members do not deserve a leader whose strength of character matches their own, though I believe they do;
And let us say for a moment that character does not count, though indeed it surely always does.
Let us, in short, ignore everything that Mr. Hegseth demanded we ignore in his hearing. Even if we did that, I would submit that based on experience alone, Mr. Hegseth is plainly unqualified for the job as Secretary of Defense.
The Secretary of Defense is responsible for a budget of more than $800 billion and responsible for 3.4 million employees who serve on every continent across the globe. To lead the Defense Department is a daunting task that requires leadership and managerial skills of the highest order.
However, Mr. Hegseth’s managerial experience begins and ends with his leadership at two small nonprofits. And his tenure at both resulted in concerns about his financial mismanagement at their helm. If Mr. Hegseth could not and did not effectively manage organizations with around 100 employees, surely no one can actually believe that he is ready to manage one of 3.4 million people.
We live in a dangerous and uncertain world. Iran and its proxies continue to menace our forces in the Middle East. Vladimir Putin is on the march in Europe. North Korea persists in testing our allies and testing its missiles. And China…China looks with a conqueror’s gaze toward Taiwan.
To my Republican colleagues, I understand that you wish to support President Trump. But Presidents are sometimes wrong. We are talking about our nation’s vital security. We are considering the confirmation of the person who will be entrusted to marshal our resources as the enemy approaches, attacks our cyber defenses, or invades an ally.
It matters. It matters that we have the right person in this job. It matters that we get this one right. Surely there is someone in this great country of brilliant and brave people of all political stripes who is more capable; who has the experience and character necessary to forge under pressure the judgement that will keep us safe and free.
This is America, we have the finest fighting force ever assembled, we have more strength and power than any fighting force has had in human history.
And in the past, when we have looked for leaders of our armed forces, we have searched for our country’s best and brightest; the most gifted minds of America’s boardrooms, the brightest stars to come out of West Point, the most revered public servants to serve in these halls… we did not need then, nor do we need now to turn to the green rooms of cable TV networks for the Secretary of Defense.
Tomorrow marks the 80th anniversary of the [end of the] Battle of the Bulge, a campaign in which my father served. In freezing temperatures, outnumbered and often undersupplied, our forces held the line against Hitler’s onslaught. Our soldiers won because they were brave, they won because they were skilled, and they won because they were well led.
Surely the armed forces of the United States of America…the victors of the Ardennes, of Gettysburg, and Midway and a thousand places in between and since…surely, they need a leader who they can have full faith in; surely America’s best deserves the best.
Government’s most important task is to keep America safe, secure, and free. It is a complex, fast moving, and evolving challenge. It is a job that at times presents its occupant, the Secretary of Defense, no good or easy options. It is, in short, a deadly serious job where both success and failure have enormous ramifications. It’s a job that depends on experience and character – the prerequisites for good judgement – like no other.
No Senator should vote for someone who they can only hope will learn on the job. Not for the Secretary of Defense. No Senator should vote for a nominee on the hope that he will display more personal discipline once he gets the job.
There are strong, experienced, and able members of the President’s party whose views align with his who could be exceptional leaders of the Department of Defense. Mr. Hegseth is not one of them. I urge my colleagues to reject this nominee, and I yield the floor.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Cornyn Praises Pres. Trump for Dismantling Biden’s Discriminatory DEI Regime

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Texas John Cornyn

WASHINGTON – Today on the floor, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) tore into the Biden-Harris administration’s DEI regime and praised President Trump for dismantling it as one of his first actions of this new administration. Excerpts of Sen. Cornyn’s remarks are below, and video can be found here.

“It’s been four days… since President Trump took the oath of office as the 47th President of the United States.”

“I’m particularly pleased to see him dismantling the Biden-Harris administration’s DEI regime throughout the federal government.”

“DEI initiatives do the exact opposite of what they purport to do, and they fly directly in the face of everything that America stands for.”

“The policies that were intended to end racial discrimination have evolved into the modern DEI apparatus, creating a new kind of discrimination, something we sought to avoid but which has now crept back into our country.”

“President Trump’s actions earlier this week are not a reversal of the progress we’ve made since the civil rights movement. They are better understood as the righting of the ship back to what Congress and the nation intended to accomplish: a nation where all people have a chance to succeed or fail based on their merit and not on race.”

“This action by President Trump, rather than reversing progress, is a return to the ideal that the United States of America should have always stood for but unfortunately did not, which is that the equal dignity and equal treatment of every American under the law.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Welch: “I want a Secretary of Defense who is as good as the soldiers he leads. Mr. Hegseth, in my view, fails to meet that standard.”

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Peter Welch (D-Vermont)
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) tonight delivered remarks from the Senate Floor about his opposition to President Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense, Peter Hegseth.
“The big concern I have about him, in addition to the character issues, the experience issues, the drinking issues…what distresses me so much about Mr. Hegseth is how he used his very powerful forum on FOX TV—in my view—to dishonor the soldiers who acted with restraint, and valor, and integrity,” said Senator Welch.
    Watch Senator Welch’s remarks here:
Key quotes from Senator Welch’s speech:
“There’s been a lot of discussion by my colleagues about the lack of experience of Mr. Hegseth—I share that concern. There’s been a lot of discussion about his views on women in the military. Our own distinguished Senator, Tammy Duckworth, is the most preeminent example of the capacity of women to serve effectively and bravely. Mr. Hegseth has repudiated his well-founded and longstanding view that he’s against women in the military, frankly, it sounds to me like a nomination-eve consideration.”
    ■■■
“Our democracy so profoundly depends on the idealism of young people who are willing to subject themselves to the decisions of the commander in chief. And I believe that every one of us here, who’s involved in the decisions about authorizing the use of military force, have an absolutely profound obligation to do that with care, because the folks who are going to do the work and be in harm’s way are going to be there because we sent them there. It’s why I’ve been so insistent—as many of us here—that we have to have a good VA, we have to have medical care for our soldiers and sailors and airmen and Marines.
“But what we need, too, is a Secretary of Defense who honors that idealism of these young Americans who decide to enlist. And that idealism is born in a sense of common commitment, a sense of common good, and it’s also to live by the code of military conduct. There is great honor in our services.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Lummis Leads Legislation to Streamline Federal Permitting Process

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Wyoming Cynthia Lummis

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) introduced the Full Responsibility and Expedited Enforcement (FREE) Act to address the current federal permitting system plagued with ambiguous, time-consuming, and costly policies. Permit by rule is proposed as a more efficient alternative, allowing for specific written standards and streamlined approval processes.

“Under four years of the Biden administration’s failed leadership, our permitting process is woefully backlogged and incredibly difficult to navigate,” said Lummis. “The federal permitting process has become years-long, which discourages investment and innovation all together. Implementing permit by rule processes will streamline approvals and help us address backlogs.”

“All too often, the federal permitting process is slow, expensive, and confusing,” said Budd.“That is why President Trump directed federal agencies to consider a ‘permit by rule’ system in his day one Unleashing American Energy Executive Order. Now Congress should make this policy permanent to reduce bureaucratic delays and compliance costs, and create a transparent and predictable regulatory environment. I’m proud to partner with Senator Lummis and Representative Maloy in this effort to implement a ‘permit by rule’ system to federal permitting.”

“Utah is growing rapidly,” said Maloy. “Unfortunately, executive agencies are often excruciatingly slow at granting permits, delaying critical projects that support rapid growth– especially in states like Utah where the majority of the land is federally controlled. The time is now to reform and streamline the permitting processes. I’m excited to see that President Trump, by executive order, has already directed his administration to begin that reformation– including through Permit by Rule– and I look forward to working with Senator Lummis and Senator Budd on advancing this bill.”

Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Rick Scott (R-FL) and Tim Sheehy (R-MT) also cosponsor this legislation.

Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-UT-02) has introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Cynthia Lummis and John Barrasso (all R-WY) today introduced a resolution to honor the 100th anniversary of Wyoming’s Nellie Tayloe Ross becoming the first female governor elected in the United States. The bill proposal originated with Green River High School students, and Senators Lummis and Barrasso introduced the resolution to the United States Senate.

“Wyoming has long been a home for trailblazing women. Honoring Governor Ross on the 100th anniversary of her election reminds us of the women who paved the way for the opportunities we have today,” said Lummis. “As we celebrate her legacy, we also recognize the lasting impact of her leadership on our state and nation. I want to thank the students at Green River High for sharing their fabulous idea to make this possible.”

“Wyoming women have blazed the trail for women’s rights and equality since our state’s founding. 100 years ago, Governor Nellie Tayloe Ross was elected as the first female governor in America.
