    Amsterdam, 9 July 2025 – Azerion, a leading European digital advertising platform, today announces the sale of its subsidiary Whow Games, the lion’s share of its Premium Games segment, to DoubleDown Interactive, part of South Korea-based DoubleUGames, for a total consideration of €65 million. The deal consists of an upfront payment of €55 million and an earn-out of up to €10 million, subject to customary adjustments.

    New Storm Shadow and missile cooperation to boost jobs as UK and France reboot defence relationship

    A new ‘Entente Industrielle’ will support thousands of UK jobs across projects including air-to air missiles

    Britain and France are to order more highly lethal Storm Shadow cruise missiles, while stepping up work on its replacement as part of a new refreshed agreement signed today (Thursday 10 July). 

    The new agreement will see the UK and France commit to launch the next phase of their joint project for both deep strike and anti-ship missiles – a step closer to selecting a final design for Storm Shadow’s replacement. 

    The joint development effort will sustain 1,300 highly skilled jobs across the UK, boosting the economy in line with the Government’s Plan for Change. Upgrading the existing Storm Shadow production lines will support more than 300 jobs at manufacturer MBDA. 

    The Prime Minister and President Emmanuel Macron will also today agree to deepen their nuclear cooperation and work more closely than ever before on nuclear deterrence.

    In an important step forward for the UK-France nuclear partnership – a newly signed declaration will state for the first time that the respective deterrents of both countries are independent but can be co-ordinated, and that there is no extreme threat to Europe that would not prompt a response by both nations.

    As such, any adversary threatening the vital interests of Britain or France could be confronted by the strength of the nuclear forces of both nations. Co-operation between both countries on nuclear research will also deepen, while working together to uphold the international non-proliferation architecture.

    The UK and France are Europe’s only nuclear powers, with deterrents that contribute significantly to the overall security of NATO and the Euro-Atlantic.

    • Jointly developing the next generation of beyond visual range air-to-air missiles for the Royal Air Force’s fighter jets 
    • Starting work on new advanced weapons to give an advantage against adversaries. This will include a new partnership to develop high-tech radiofrequency weapons such as microwave weapons and jammers that could be used to shoot down threats like drones and missiles

Recognising the increased threat to European security, the UK and France will expand its jointly deployable force, refocusing it on defending Europe, moving to warfighting readiness to deter, and countering any adversaries. 

    The Combined Joint Force will be able to command a Combined UK/French Corps for the first time – the highest scale of deployed ground forces from a command perspective – made up of thousands of troops and working side-by-side with NATO allies.  

    For the first time it will also integrate space and cyber to counter new threats, boosting the abilities of the UK and France’s joint forces to quickly respond to developments on the battlefield through increased awareness and responsiveness supported by data from beyond just the ground, sea, and air.

    The Combined Joint Force is a crucial step forward in the UK and France stepping up their leadership within NATO, setting a clear path to meet the Government’s Strategic Defence Review commitment of NATO’s strategic Reserve Corp and stepping up on European security. 

    The UK and France will reaffirm their joint leadership of the Coalition of the Willing – a group of over 30 nations working together to coordinate military support for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. The CJF structures provide the bedrock for the coalition, enabling allies to operate under UK-French leadership.  

    This will include cooperating further on an integrated missile system to defend Europe. The UK-led DIAMOND initiative will improve NATO’s integrated air and missile defence by ensuring that the different air defence systems across the Alliance operate better and more jointly across the alliance.

    Since early January 2025, residents of Birmingham in the UK have been caught in the dispute between the city council and the Unite union over pay, terms and conditions for waste and recycling collectors. The latest attempt at talks broke down in acrimony.

    At one point during the crisis, there were 17 tonnes of uncollected rubbish in Birmingham. Businesses and residents face public health and safety risks including pest infestations and the spread of disease and fire hazards.

    These have tainted the reputation of the city and hurt its chances of hosting events and attracting visitors. The news of cat-sized rats in Birmingham has made headlines from the US to Australia.

    Workers’ pay is being negotiated between the union and the council in Birmingham. However, this is a fairly dangerous job and, with an ageing population, it may become more difficult to hire new workers. We argue that a more fair approach would be to use technology to help transition workers (including through training) towards better paid and safer positions.

    This would be an opportunity to build more sustainable waste management in the UK’s second largest city and beyond. Advances in robotics and AI are making automated refuse collection a reality, for example. Some cities in the US, Canada and parts of Europe already use robotics-enabled equipment in their refuse collection systems.

    A shortage of skilled personnel threatens the transition towards a greener economy. People have to be at the centre of the solution. In this case, skilled workers are needed to keep different types of waste separate and so improve recycling rates.

    The recovery value can be high for certain products such as electronics, automotive parts, as well as materials like plastic and metal. This is still difficult for machines to do.

    Smart bins and automated trucks

    Birmingham city council has already proposed improvements to waste collection. Based on publicly available information, it aims at increasing the number of rubbish trucks, reducing the number of collection days and retraining refuse collectors. But it has yet to take full advantage of existing advanced technologies.

    The plan, for instance, proposes improving communication with residents about collection day via text messages. While welcome, this is rather basic. It was only during the pandemic that all recycling centres started using online booking systems. Prior to that, endless queues were common – wasting time and increasing emissions with traffic jams.

    We argue that a whole-systems approach is needed to make the most of the opportunities new technology affords. Automated side loader trucks and smart bins are already used in various cities – the latter use sensors to monitor waste volumes and predict when collection is needed. The council could analyse the strengths and weaknesses of each technology in different areas of the city.

    Side loader trucks, which can lift up large bins and empty them, automate a dangerous process and are already considered a mature technology, used in cities across the US, Canada and Sweden. These trucks are difficult to drive in narrow streets. But, where appropriate, their benefits include increased productivity, reduced collection costs and greater worker safety.

    Sensors embedded in the vehicle, including from cameras, can provide data on the distribution of waste in different areas. This helps to produce a waste map. AI algorithms can analyse the data and provide customised collection schedules that optimise the use of trucks in the collection fleet. The algorithms can learn and be continuously revised to improve the service.

    In busy areas of the city, information from smart bins can prevent rubbish accumulating. Advanced machine learning techniques can then be employed to further optimise the collection schedule by detecting, for instance, anomalies such as a sudden increase in some types of waste. Such systems can provide more adaptable solutions and increase the productivity of officers.

    Recent improvements in imaging techniques and chemical analysis can help to identify different waste materials and allow automatic sorting, and the identification of hazardous waste.

    Other technological solutions, such as the use of smart underground large storage containers as communal bins allow for less frequent collections, but they may require significant changes to both infrastructure and trucks. These already exist in parts of Spain.

    Pneumatic waste collection systems have been tested in Wembley, a suburb in northwest London. In this system, waste is sucked through underground pipes by a fan system at speeds approaching 50mph to a central point, where it is stored in airtight containers until further treatment takes place. More than 30 countries adopt this system.

    Educating the public is vital too. Reducing waste in the first place is a good way to save money and would reduce pressure on waste collection systems.

    As far as Birmingham goes, overlooking advanced technologies won’t make the council’s task of satisfying residents and waste collection teams any easier. We think a lot of people would be happier to see more robotics trucks and smart bins than more rats in the streets.

    H.R. 3667 – “The Strengthening American Nuclear Energy (SANE) Act” is the 15th piece of legislation introduced by Congressman Donalds during the 119th Congress and specifically codifies following executive orders: (1) Deploying Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technologies for National Security; (2) Ordering the Reform of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission; (3) Reforming Nuclear Reactor Testing at the Department of Energy; and (4) Reinvigorating the Nuclear Industrial Base.

    CAIRO, July 9 (Xinhua) — China and Egypt should continuously simplify bilateral trade and investment procedures, strengthen industrial connectivity and market connectivity, and strive for higher-level mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said in Cairo on Wednesday.

    Li Qiang made the remarks during a meeting with Hanafi Ali El-Gebali, Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives (lower house of parliament). The Chinese premier is on an official visit to Egypt at the invitation of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.

    Although China and Egypt are geographically far from each other, the friendship between the two countries has a long history, Li Qiang pointed out.

    According to him, since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, the traditional Chinese-Egyptian friendship remains unchanged no matter how the international situation changes, and the dynamics of bilateral ties and cooperation continue to grow, demonstrating powerful internal energy.

    China is willing to further develop the traditional friendship with Egypt, strengthen political mutual trust, firmly support each other on issues related to the two sides’ core interests and major concerns, continuously elevate China-Egypt relations to new heights and achieve new results in bilateral cooperation, bringing more benefits to the peoples of both countries, Li Qiang stressed.

    He also called on both sides to maintain friendly exchanges between the legislative bodies of the two countries, strengthen political communication, share experiences in public administration and continuously improve mutual understanding.

    Noting that China is willing to deepen the alignment of development strategies with Egypt, the Chinese premier said the two sides should carry out high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and utilize the Forum on China-Arab States Cooperation and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation to steadily improve the quality of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) announced the Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a series of Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants to local NY-23 airports: $731,951 to the Corning-Painted Post Airport, $394,724 to the Akron Jesson Field Airport, $386,272 to the Buffalo-Lancaster Regional Airport, and $201,400 to the Chautauqua County Jamestown Airport.

     

    Specifically, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded an AIP grant to the Town of Erwin Industrial Development Agency to fund the final phase of construction at Corning-Painted Post Airport. This project will rehabilitate 3,269 feet of an existing paved runway to maintain the structural integrity.

     

    At Akron Jesson Field Airport, an AIP grant was awarded to Christian Airmen Inc. to conduct an initial pavement survey and develop a new pavement management plan.

     

    At Buffalo-Lancaster Regional Airport, an AIP grant was awarded to Lancaster Airport Inc. to conduct an initial pavement study and develop a new pavement management plan.

     

    At Chautauqua County Jamestown Airport, an AIP grant was awarded to the County of Chautauqua to reconstruct the existing Terminal Apron lighting and to reconstruct 13,900 square yards of existing Terminal Apron pavement.

     

    “Investing in our local airports is essential to strengthening our regional infrastructure and economy,”said Congressman Langworthy.“I’m proud to support these FAA grants, which will make necessary upgrades that improve safety, access, and future growth opportunities for our communities.”

    UK Statement for the World Intellectual Property Organization General Assemblies. Delivered by Mr. Adam Williams, Chief Executive and Comptroller-General of the UK’s Intellectual Property Office.

    Thank you Chair.

    The UK is pleased to be part of the 66th session of the WIPO Assemblies. We thank you, Chair, Ambassador Suescum, DG Tang, and the Secretariat for preparing this session.

    We commend your positive leadership, DG, over the past four years. Systems like the PCT, Hague and Madrid remain essential for all UK businesses, providing cost-effective global IP protection. We value your commitment to keeping these services central to WIPO’s work. 

    The UK welcomes WIPO’s responsible and prudent financial management, which is especially important in these uncertain times. This General Assembly has several challenging issues to discuss ahead, including WIPO’s program and budget. We encourage all delegations to work towards consensus.  

    The UK applauds the adoption of the design law and genetic resources treaties last year, clear proof that multilateralism and IP can deliver meaningful progress. We are pleased to announce our intention to sign the Design Law Treaty this week, supporting global designers and small businesses.

    We strongly support efforts to build a more inclusive IP system, especially programs for women, youth, and underrepresented groups and initiatives like the Global Entrepreneurship Empowerment.

    Looking ahead, with just 17% of SDG targets on track, we welcome WIPO GREEN’s expansion, and the growing recognition of IP’s role in tackling climate change. The UK was pleased to sign a MoU with WIPO Green last year and have since joined its Board to deepen collaboration.

    We also value WIPO’s work on IP and frontier technologies and encourage deeper collaboration with Geneva-based partners and global initiatives like the UN Global Digital Compact and AI for Good.

    Finally, we thank the Secretariat for its report on assistance for Ukraine’s innovation and creativity sector (document A/66/8). While Ukraine faces an unprecedented level of Russian attacks on its towns and cities, wreaking horrific damage on its people and its creative industries, we salute its resilience and innovation in the face of such criminality, and welcome the support provided by WIPO.

    Padilla, Schiff Announce Over $81 Million to Upgrade California Airport Infrastructure

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff (both D-Calif.) announced that 18 California airports were awarded a combined $81.3 million in grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to bolster aviation infrastructure. The funding comes through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP), which invests in airport infrastructure projects such as runways, taxiways, noise cancellation, airport signage, airport lighting, and airport markings.

    “Californians and the millions of people who visit our state each year deserve a safe and easy airport travel experience,” said Senator Padilla. “That starts with modernizing and rehabilitating outdated airport infrastructure. These critical investments will not just make travel smoother for passengers, but will reduce noise pollution in neighboring communities.”

    “These grants will allow us to make critical investments in our airport infrastructure that will enhance the travel experience for millions of visitors and travelers, improve safety, create more jobs, and boost our local economies,” said Senator Schiff.

    California airports receiving funding include:

    • Los Angeles International Airport — $22.80 million: This project acquires and installs full noise mitigation measures for 400 residences affected by airport noise exposure.
    • Van Nuys Airport — $19.45 million: This project reconstructs 3,138 feet of existing paved Taxiway connectors C, D, E, F, H, M, N, P, and Q pavement that have reached the end of their useful lives. This grant is associated with an Airports Infrastructure Grant which funds the remaining eligible portion of the project. This grant funds a portion of the final phase, which consists of reconstruction of 1,788 feet.
    • San Diego International Airport — $15 million: This project acquires and installs full noise mitigation measures for 250 residences affected by airport noise exposure.
    • San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport — $8.71 million: This project rehabilitates 6,101 feet of existing paved Taxiway A to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris to extend its useful life. This grant is associated with an Airport Infrastructure Grant that funds the remaining eligible portion of the project. This grant funds a portion of the total project.
    • Hollywood-Burbank/Bob Hope Airport — $7.92 million: This project constructs a new 105,816 square yard Terminal Apron to bring the airport into conformity with current standards. This grant funds the final phase, which consists of construction of 74,071 square yards.
    • March Air Reserve Base — $3.27 million: This project reconstructs 13,950 square yards of the existing Golf Apron pavement that has reached the end of its useful life. This grant is associated with an Airport Infrastructure Grant that funds the remaining eligible portion of the project. This grant funds a portion of phase 2, which consists of construction.
    • Chino Airport — $1.05 million: This project rehabilitates 500 feet of existing paved Taxiway G to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement to extend its useful life. It also extends existing Taxiways H and L an additional 1,800 feet in length to bring the airport into conformity with current standards, while constructing new 1,800-foot Taxiways K, S, and T to bring the airport into conformity with current standards. This grant funds phase 1, which consists of design.

Last year, Senator Padilla announced $219.5 million in grant funding from the FAA through the AIP to upgrade aviation infrastructure. He also announced $89.3 million from the FAA’s Airport Terminal Program, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Padilla and the late Senator Dianne Feinstein previously announced a combined $528 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for airport upgrades and modernizations across California.

    The 2025 President’s Circle Reception was part of the annual meeting and hosted by AIMBE President, Lola Eniola-Adefeso, Ph.D. The event brought together AIMBE Fellows and supporters to recognize those who have gone above and beyond in advancing AIMBE’s mission of advocacy for medical and biological engineering.

    Each year, a leader from AIMBE, or the broader medical and biological engineering community, is invited to serve as the designated honored guest. Dr. Cato T. Laurencin of UConn was invited because of his exceptional leadership in biomedical engineering, and his pioneering work in regenerative engineering. His presence highlighted the importance of continued advocacy and engagement at the highest levels of science and policy.

    AIMBE is the authoritative voice and advocate for the value of medical and biological engineering to society.

    Laurencin is the University Professor at UConn and the Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UConn School of Medicine, professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Connecticut. He is the CEO of The Cato T. Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering, a cross-university institute created and named in his honor at UConn.

    Laurencin is a fellow of AIMBE and previously served on its board of directors. He served as chair of the College of Fellows for AIMBE. He received the Pierre Galletti Award, the highest honor of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. More recently, Laurencin received the Professional Impact Award for Leadership from AIMBE recognizing his work as the founder of the field of Regenerative Engineering.

    In 2025, he has received the Paul Terasaki Innovation Award from the Paul Terasaki Foundation,  and the Bioactive Materials Lifetime Achievement Award. He will receive the Dickson Prize in Medicine this year. Many of the Dickson Prize awardees have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize.

    Laurencin was bestowed Knight Commander of the Order of St. Lucia, under the auspices of King Charles III of England by the Governor General of Saint Lucia. He is recognized as the leading international figure in polymeric biomaterials chemistry and engineering who has made extraordinary scientific contributions and with profound contributions to improving human health.

    This study examines how generative AI challenges core principles of EU copyright law. It highlights the legal mismatch between AI training practices and current text and data mining exceptions, and the uncertain status of AI-generated content. These developments pose structural risks for the future of creativity in Europe, where a rich and diverse cultural heritage depends on the continued protection and fair remuneration of authors. The report calls for clear rules on input/output distinctions, harmonised opt-out mechanisms, transparency obligations, and equitable licensing models. To balance innovation and authors’ rights, the European Parliament is expected to lead reforms that reflect the evolving realities of creativity, authorship, and machine-generated expression. This study was commissioned by the European Parliament’s Policy Department for Justice, Civil Liberties and Institutional Affairs at the request of the Committee on Legal Affairs.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Press release – Managing the influx of substandard goods from non-EU web shops

    On Wednesday, Parliament adopted proposals to manage the growing influx into the EU of substandard and potentially dangerous cheap goods from non-EU web shops.

    The report adopted with 619 votes in favour, 26 against and 46 abstentions identifies ways to alleviate the pressure on customs and market surveillance authorities struggling to check and ensure the safety of the 12 million small e-commerce packages arriving in the EU every day.

    Warehousing and removal of customs tax exemptions

    So-called “warehousing might be one helpful solution to check and ensure the safety of packages, MEPs say. This would involve convincing non-EU traders to set up warehouses inside the EU to process client deliveries. Checking their bulk shipments of similar goods into these EU-based warehouses would be considerably easier than checking individual packages coming to the EU from third countries.

    MEPs also support the removal of the current customs duty exemption for goods worth less than €150 in the framework of the wider Customs Code reform, as approximately 65% of parcels entering the EU are deliberately undervalued.

    Handling fee for small e-commerce parcels

    The report cautiously supports the Commission’s proposal to impose a €2 handling fee for individual e-commerce packages from outside the EU, as announced in its communication on e-commerce. MEPs want the Commission to verify that this amount is proportionate, compliant with WTO rules, and would not be passed on to EU consumers.

    Digitalisation and better rules enforcement

    The report also suggests that digitalisation and especially the use of new AI tools and block chain technology might ease the customs overload and make checks more efficient. MEPs urge EU member states to allocate more money to customs authorities for the uptake of these new tools. They call on the EU to focus on implementing existing rules and make sure platforms fulfil their obligations.

    MEPs also want member states to restrict high-risk vendors from operating in their critical infrastructure and border security systems, such as for the procurement of security screening and cargo scanning equipment used at airports and ports.

    Next steps

    Some of the proposals adopted today will be discussed during the negotiations between Parliament and Council on a major reform of Union’s Customs Code that started yesterday on 8 July 2025.

    In working with NOV to install a robotics system on one of its land rigs in Canada, Precision Drilling faced several non-technical challenges. Specifically, the project emphasized the importance of tempering expectations on what the system could do, as well as the importance of securing strategic alignment with both the vendor and the operator early on in order to actualize ideas effectively.

    Speaking with DC from the 2025 IADC World Drilling Conference, Robert Houston, VP of Operations at Precision Drilling, talked about these challenges, as well as how the technologies impacted multiple key performance indicators. Mr Houston also discussed potential performance gains that robotics systems in general can provide to drilling contractors.

    The introduction of AI and cloud computing platforms has allowed the drilling industry to link previously isolated operational technology (OT) systems onboard rigs. This integration presents both opportunities and challenges with regards to cybersecurity. It will be critical for drillers to understand how they can effectively mitigate the potential cyber risks and enhance their overall security as AI and the cloud become more integral to their operations, said Mate Csorba, Lead Cybersecurity Specialist at DNV.

    In this interview with DC from the 2025 IADC World Drilling Conference, Mr Csorba outlined what he called the “blurring of borders” between OT systems and IT (information technology) systems, as well as the short-, mid- and long-term use cases for AI in drilling. He also discussed the role AI may or may not play in cybersecurity.
