    A new cross-border e-commerce industrial park opened on Friday in Lhasa, southwest China, as part of efforts to deepen trade and economic ties with South Asia, local authorities said.

    The industrial park, located in the capital of the Xizang Autonomous Region, was designed to be a comprehensive platform for product display, warehousing, logistics, customs clearance and financial settlement services, according to Ye Haiying, director of the city’s commerce bureau.

    Spanning 16,000 square meters, the park has already attracted 12 cross-border e-commerce firms.

    Goods are first consolidated in two major domestic trade hubs — Guangzhou and Yiwu — before being routed through Lhasa and shipped to a 1,800-square-meter overseas warehouse in Nepal, Ye said.

    The overseas warehouse has reduced delivery times from 60 days when shipped by sea to just 20 days. Logistics efficiency has improved by 50 percent, and overall costs have fallen 20 percent, giving companies a competitive edge as they expand into South Asian markets, Ye noted.

    Lhasa’s location and multimodal transport links make it a well-positioned logistics hub.

    The 2025 Intersolar Europe exhibition, one of the world’s most influential events in the photovoltaic (PV) industry, concluded in Munich on Friday after a three-day run. Chinese companies as major highlights of the event won widespread acclaim for their cutting-edge products and system integration capabilities.

    The exhibition hosted over 2,700 companies from more than 50 countries and regions, including around 850 from China. These Chinese exhibitors showcased a wide array of innovations ranging from high-efficiency PV modules to energy storage systems, EV charging infrastructure, and integrated energy solutions.

    Markus Elsaesser, founder and CEO of Solar Promotion GmbH, the event’s organizer, said that Chinese companies were “not only key product suppliers but also supplying very cost-effective solutions so that we can advance with the decarbonization of Europe.”

    According to a report entitled the Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2025-2029, released during the event by SolarPower Europe, China accounted for roughly half of both the world’s new solar capacity additions and cumulative installations in 2024. The report hailed China’s contributions to global decarbonization, noting that its sustained investments have accelerated solar technology advancements worldwide.

    “The commitment of China to Europe is actually pretty strong at the moment, really providing the necessary models that we have to actually increase installation,” said Christophe Lits, senior market analyst at SolarPower Europe.

    He noted that China, as the world’s largest solar application market, plays a vital role in Europe’s energy transition not only by supplying quality products but also through local production and technology partnerships, fostering strong Europe-China industrial ties.

    Solar technology giant LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. showcased a new solar panel that won its top technology award during the event. The panel was recognized for maintaining high energy conversion efficiency even in low-light conditions such as cloudy days, and for improved fire safety through structural innovations.

    “The European market is highly receptive to new PV technologies. We are encouraged to increase our R&D investment continuously,” said Liu Yuxi, president of the global marketing center at LONGi Green Energy. He expected opportunities for China-Europe cooperation to continue to expand as renewables take up a growing share of Europe’s energy mix.

    Amid high energy prices in Europe, some Chinese companies are actively exploring the integration of solar technology into household appliances to better meet consumers’ demand for green living.

    Visitors to the event were attracted to a model home outfitted with a fully integrated green energy system showcased by TCL, a global technology company headquartered in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, neighboring Hong Kong. The setup combines rooftop solar panels with indoor inverters and storage units to smartly distribute power to heat pumps, EV chargers, and other home applications.

    The integrated household energy system has been rolled out in some residential projects in Europe, according to Zhang Shengyang, General Manager of TCL SunPower Global, who is experienced in the home appliances business. He saw home energy solutions as a potential growth engine in the European market.

    Still reeling from the massive blackout that hit Spain and Portugal on April 28, attendees turned their focus to energy storage — one of the exhibition’s standout themes that drew heavy interest and high footfall.

    Major Chinese players such as CATL, Huawei, and Trina Solar showcased their latest solutions. CATL debuted a new container-sized modular storage unit capable of charging about 150 electric vehicles or powering an average German household for six years.

    “As the share of weather-dependent renewables rises, so does the need for flexible energy storage,” said Ji Yu, senior director of project management of ESS CATL. He said that Chinese storage firms are rapidly integrating into local markets and forging diverse partnerships.

    China’s property market is showing renewed signs of recovery, with both new home sales and second-hand transactions increasing, fueled in part by a rising demand for high-quality housing spurred by newly introduced national standards for “quality homes.”

    Released by China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the upgraded national standards for residential projects, which came into effect on May 1, cover seven aspects that include living environment, building space, structure, indoor environment and building equipment.

    Among the most notable provisions are a minimum ceiling height of three meters for new residential buildings, mandatory elevators in structures with four or more floors, and enhanced sound insulation for walls and floors.

    Many industry insiders believe that meeting these new standards for a “quality home” is becoming a key selling point for properties that are up to standard, drawing increased interest from prospective buyers.

    Market revival 

    During the recent five-day May Day holiday, which marked the first public holiday after the new standards were implemented, China’s real estate market in many regions maintained the recovery momentum seen in the first quarter of 2025, with several first- and second-tier cities posting robust transaction figures.

    In Shanghai, one of China’s most important regional real estate markets, total home sales during the holiday, including new and second-hand properties, rose 36 percent year on year. New home transactions were up 12 percent, while second-hand home sales surged by 44 percent.

    Similarly, south China metropolis Shenzhen recorded 826 new commercial housing subscriptions from May 1 to 5, with 317 units completing online contracts, up 23.89 percent year on year.

    According to the data released by the China Index Academy, during the May Day holiday, Beijing saw a total of 302 new residential properties signed online, covering 34,200 square meters, marking year-on-year increases of 114 percent and 107 percent, respectively.

    In Yantai, a coastal city in east China’s Shandong Province, demand for high-quality homes was on full display during the May Day holiday. All 100 units of the first phase of a residential project named Boshiyayuan were sold on May 1, its launch day.

    “This project impressed us with its planning, layout and amenities,” said a homebuyer surnamed Zheng. “Each unit has a private elevator, and the community features a basketball court, gym, swimming pool, yoga studio and communal dining hall. Even the aluminum front door with high-level insulation met our expectations.”

    More and more homebuyers like Zheng are increasingly shifting their focus from simply “having a place to live” to seeking “livable quality,” according to Ding Zuyu, president of the property research institution CRIC.

    Expectations for intelligent home systems, eco-friendly designs, thoughtful architecture and well-rounded facilities are driving a new wave of residential consumption.

    Guan Chong, general manager of the Shanghai branch of Jinmao, a Hong Kong-listed developer, said quality homes and well-designed communities offer homeowners a low-carbon, healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle, and such products have already been launched in major cities including Shanghai, Beijing and Nanjing — and have received positive feedback from homebuyers.

    “Many of our homeowners have experienced technology-driven living and chose to purchase or upgrade to another similar property,” the executive said. “This clearly demonstrates that quality homes will always have a place in the market and can effectively unleash demand for better housing.”

    Quality-driven transformation 

    On the supply side, changes are also underway. So far this year, industry insiders have observed a trend of “downsizing and upgrading” on the land supply side, which signals a significant increase in the availability of high-quality homes in the near future.

    Many cities have proactively adjusted their land supply structures by reducing overall volume and focusing on premium plots. A growing number of “small but refined” parcels are being released to better support high-quality residential development.

    In Hangzhou, capital city of east China’s Zhejiang Province and a major regional property market, for example, about 90 percent of residential land parcels sold this year have a planned construction area of less than 90,000 square meters. These plots typically feature complete supporting infrastructure and moderate floor area ratios, making them well-suited for building quality housing.

    According to industry insiders, the new standards have the potential to drive further transformation in the real estate sector.

    “The new standards raise the ceiling height by 20 centimeters, an adjustment that takes into account the increasing average height of Chinese residents and significantly improves the space,” said Zeng Yu, senior architect at the China Academy of Building Research.

    Zeng explained that the added height not only enhances the vertical dimension of indoor space, but also improves natural lighting and ventilation. This change, Zeng noted, boosts convenience and functional flexibility, while providing greater capacity for diverse interior design, technological upgrades and evolving lifestyle needs.

    Yu Tian, marketing general manager of Poly Developments and Holdings Group’s Shanghai branch, believes the new national standards will have a significant impact on the development of the real estate sector.

    “These new standards encourage property developers to focus on product standards, research and development, and iteration, continuously increasing the use of new products, materials, technologies, next-generation information technologies and smart construction methods. This more segmented and diverse market will unlock the potential of demand for upgraded housing,” Yu added.

    He Xinyu, general manager of Chengdu Ruihetai research institute of industrial and urban development, echoed this view. “In the long term, the new standards will guide the real estate sector to shift from its previous focus on high turnover to a focus on high quality, pointing the way forward for both real estate companies and their upstream and downstream partners,” said He.

    The introduction of these new standards also opens a pathway for the renovation of older properties. By aligning with the new norms, outdated residential buildings can be transformed through improvements such as the installation of elevators, noise reduction measures, senior-friendly renovations and better amenities. This could lead to significant value increases for older communities.

    Chen Jie, a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, said that, as a result, these initiatives are expected to boost the market value of second-hand homes, benefiting both homeowners and prospective buyers by improving the overall quality of the housing stock.

    For the first time, the phrase “quality homes” featured in the government work report unveiled during this year’s “two sessions,” the annual meetings of China’s top legislature and top political advisory body.

    Guided by this trend, nearly 10 provincial-level regions, including Beijing, Shandong, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Guizhou and Sichuan, have focused on building high-quality housing systems by leveraging their regional characteristics. These efforts span the entire value chain, from standard-setting and land supply to construction techniques.

    Team China set a new national record in the men’s 4x400m in 3 minutes and 1.87 seconds at the 2025 World Athletics Relays on Saturday in rain.

    The competition serves as a main qualification for relay events at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, features 6 events including men’s, women’s and mixed 4x100m and 4x400m. The top 14 teams in each event (except for mixed 4x100m) will earn berths for Tokyo 2025.

    According to the rules, the top 14 teams in men’s and women’s 4x100m, 4x400m and mixed 4x400m consist of 8 spots booked Saturday and 6 spots Sunday. In each event, the top 2 teams in each of the 4 heats qualified for the finals and Tokyo 2025, with the remaining teams competing for 6 other spots per event in the second qualification round Sunday.

    The Chinese squad for the men’s 4x400m, composed of rookies Liang Baotang, Li Yiqing, Zhang Qining and Fu Haoran, finished second in Heat 1, breaking the national record, reaching the final and qualifying for Tokyo 2025.

    “My mind was blank when I was running, just to do my best,” said the fourth leg Fu, who caught up to the second place by surpassing a Spainish runner.

    Mixed 4x100m is a newly-introduced event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, yet was not included in Tokyo 2025. In the event’s global debut, Team Canada finished first in qualification with a time of 40.90 seconds. The Chinese quartet of Huang Shuping, Kong Lingyao, Chen Jinfeng and Chen Guanfeng qualified for the final by clocking 41.30 seconds.

    “It’s interesting to mix and mingle boys and girls in 4X100m. We are really excited and happy for the introduction of the event,” said Chen Guanfeng.

    Veteran Xie Zhenye led Team China in men’s 4x100m, and the squad clocked 38.30 seconds to finish third in Heat 4, only 0.005 seconds shy of Team Italy, who finished second in the heat. South Africa and Japan set a new world-leading mark with 37.84 seconds.

    Drama unfolded in the women’s 4x100m as China’s third-leg runner Liang Xiaojing and fourth-leg runner Ge Manqi made a mistake in passing the baton, finishing sixth in the heat.

    Elsewhere, the United States made a world-leading mark of 3 minutes and 11.37 seconds in the mixed 4x400m. Spain set a new women’s 4x100m national record of 42.18 seconds.

    China’s Zhang Haiqin dominated the women’s 55kg category, sweeping 3 golds and breaking the world junior record at the 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jiangshan, east China’s Zhejiang Province, on Saturday.

    The rising star, born in 2005, successfully completed all 6 attempts. Zhang lifted 99kg in the snatch to win her first gold, followed by a commanding 126kg in the clean and jerk, securing the victory with a record-breaking total of 225kg. Her excellent feat rewrote the Asian and world junior records.

    China’s Wang Hao seized an early lead in the men’s 61kg division, winning snatch gold with 142kg. However, DPR Korea’s Pak Myongjin staged a thrilling comeback in the clean and jerk. While Wang managed 163kg in his opening attempt, Pak powered through 170kg, edging ahead by one kilogram in total to claim golds in both the clean and jerk and overall. China’s Wang Min collected three bronze medals.

    China’s Zheng Xinhao opened strong in the men’s 67kg class, winning snatch gold with 147kg. However, his campaign faltered in the clean and jerk, managing only his opening 170kg for bronze. Vietnam’s Tran Minh Tri capitalized on the opportunity, clinching the total gold with 318kg against Zheng’s 317kg.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Philippine advocacy group condemns NZ military pact with Manila, rejects election violence

    The Aotearoa Philippines Solidarity national assembly has condemned the National Party-led Coalition government in New Zealand over signing a “deplorable” visiting forces agreement with the Philippine government

    “Given the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ appalling human rights record and continuing attacks on activists in the Philippines, it is deplorable for the New Zealand government to even consider forging such an agreement,” the APS said in a statement today.

    Activists from Filipino communities and concerned New Zealanders gathered in Auckland yesterday to discuss the current human rights crisis in the Philippines and resolved to organise solidarity actions in Aotearoa New Zealand.

    The visiting forces agreement (VFA), signed in Manila last month, allows closer military relations between the two countries, including granting allowing each other’s militaries to enter the country to participate in joint exercises.

    “By entering into a VFA with the Philippines, the coalition government is being complicit in crimes against humanity being perpetrated by the AFP and the regime of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. against the Filipino people,” the statement said.

    Having such an agreement in place with the Philippine military tarnished New Zealand’s global reputation of respecting human rights and having an independent foreign policy.

    “The APS reiterates its call to the New Zealand government to junk the VFA with the Philippines and to end all ties with the Philippine military,” the statement said.

    Mid-term general election tomorrow
    “Assembly participants also discussed the mid-term general election campaign in the Philippines “and the violence borne out of it”.

    “Elections are typically a bloody affair in the country, but the vote set to occur on Monday [May 12] is especially volatile given the high stakes,” the statement said.

    “The country’s two dominant political factions, the Marcos and Duterte camps, are vying for control of the country’s political arena and there is no telling how far they would go to obtain power.”

    The statement said there were reports of campaigners going missing, being extrajudicially killed and also being detained without due process.

    “We expect electoral fraud and violence will again be committed by the biggest political dynasties especially against the progressive candidates representing the most marginalised sectors.

    “The Philippine government must do everything it can to avoid further bloodshed and violent skirmishes that aim to preserve power for the competing political dynasties.”

    The statement said that the APS called for the immediate and unconditional freedom for Bayan Muna campaigner Pauline Joy Panjawan.

    “Her abduction, torture and continuing detention on trumped up charges speak volumes about the reality of the ongoing human rights crisis in the Philippines.

    With yesterday’sassembly, the APS renewed its commitment to raise awareness over the human rights crisis in the Philippines and to do everything it could to raise solidarity with the Filipino people struggling to “achieve a truly just and democratic society”.

    The Gisborne community will notice additional Police on patrol ahead of a tangi for a patched gang member on Monday morning.

    A large number of gang members and associates are expected to be in town for the tangi, and Police will have additional resources on hand to provide staff the support they need for a gathering of this size. Extra staff from neighbouring Police districts will be in Tairāwhiti, ensuring we can respond to any scenario that threatens public safety. The Police helicopter, Eagle, will also provide aerial support through Monday.

    We are mindful of providing a space for whānau and friends to grieve peacefully while balancing the safety of the community.

    Police have been in contact with local gang leaders to outline our expectations, including around the wearing or displaying of gang insignia in a public place, which Police will act upon. We have also been in communication with whānau of the deceased.

    Our focus is on the safety of everyone. We will not tolerate behaviour that aims to threaten or intimidate, and officers will be working to reduce disruption to the public.

    Police will have extra patrols around Gisborne and the wider area, including on the roads. Even if we can’t take enforcement action on the day, staff will follow up on reports of illegal activity.

    At the heart of this is the safety of our community and I urge anyone who has immediate concerns for their safety to please call Police on 111.

    BEIJING, May 10 — China hopes for and supports an early ceasefire between Pakistan and India, and is willing to continue playing a constructive role in this regard, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Saturday.

    Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a phone call with Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister.

    As a neighbor of both Pakistan and India, China is concerned about the escalation of the conflict between the two countries, Wang said.

    China believes that Pakistan will respond to the current situation with calm, and make decisions in line with its fundamental and long-term interests, he added.

    Dar said that Pakistan is willing to achieve a ceasefire with India, and will respond to any acts that violate its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

    Noting that Pakistan stands on the front line of the international fight against terrorism, Wang said China supports its continued firm counterterrorism efforts.

    The Macao Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has welcomed 10 million inbound and outbound passengers since January, official data showed on Friday.

    As of 3 a.m. on Friday, the number surpassed 10 million, according to the data from the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR)’s Public Security Police Force (CPSP).

    The average daily cross-border passenger volume at the port in the period this year reached 78,000, an increase of 11.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

    This year’s 10-million mark was reached 13 days earlier than in 2024. According to the CPSP, the growing passenger flow reflects increasingly frequent cross-border movement and highlights the bridge’s role in promoting integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

    Regarding distribution, 50.5 percent of travelers passed through the Hong Kong-Macao hall, 15 percent through the Zhuhai-Macao hall, and 34.5 percent used vehicle channels.

    As the greater bay area develops, the bridge has solidified its position as a vital transportation hub.

    Pakistan and India announced on Saturday that they agreed on a ceasefire.

    The announcement came following four days of military strikes on each other.

    Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said on Saturday that Pakistan and India have agreed on a ceasefire with immediate effect.

    “Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Dar said.

    He said that after the recent escalation and military activities on both sides, several countries, including the U.S., Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, were in contact with Pakistan.

    Diplomatic efforts were underway throughout the day, following which a ceasefire agreement was reached, he added.

    Meanwhile, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Saturday that the two countries agreed to observe a ceasefire and end military actions on their borders and Line of Control (LoC).

    “Pakistan (Director General of Military Operations, or DGMO) called the DGMO of India at 15:35 local time earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, in the air and sea with effect from 17:00 local time today. Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding,” Misri said at a press briefing in New Delhi.

    According to Misri, the DGMOs will talk again on May 12 at 12:00 local time.

    On Wednesday, India launched airstrikes on Pakistani targets to avenge last month’s killing of 26 people by gunmen in Pahalgam town, about 89 km east of Srinagar, the summer capital of the Indian-controlled Kashmir.

    The situation along the LoC dividing Kashmir had been tense as troops of India and Pakistan deployed on both sides of the ceasefire line were engaged in an exchange of fire and artillery.

    Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed on Saturday his hope that India and Pakistan will remain calm and restrained, properly handle differences through dialogue and consultation, and avoid escalating the situation.

    When talking to India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval over phone, Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission, said China supports and expects India and Pakistan to achieve a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire through consultation, which is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and meets the common aspiration of the international community.

    Wang also said that China condemns the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam area and opposes all forms of terrorism.

    Noting that the world is undergoing both transformation and upheaval, Wang said peace and stability in Asia are hard-won and deserve to be cherished, adding that India and Pakistan are neighbors that cannot be moved away, and that they are both neighbors of China.

    Doval said the attacks in Pahalgam area caused serious casualties for the Indian side, adding that India needs to take counter-terrorism actions.

    War is not the choice of the Indian side and is not in the interests of either side, he said, adding that both India and Pakistan will be committed to a ceasefire and look forward to restoring regional peace and stability as soon as possible.

    Chinese President Xi Jinping left here Saturday after paying a state visit to Russia and attending the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War.

    During bilateral meetings with leaders of several countries here Friday on the sidelines of the Victory Day celebrations, Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to enhancing cooperation and strengthening ties with these countries, and emphasized the importance of upholding multilateralism and working together to address global challenges.

    REMEMBERING HISTORY

    On Friday, the Chinese president joined his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and leaders from more than 20 countries and international organizations to lay red flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

    The solemn ceremony marked a moment of remembering and paying tribute to those who perished in the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War.

    The Soviet Union was the principal theater of World War II in Europe, losing 27 million lives, while China was the main theater in Asia, suffering 35 million casualties in its resistance against the bulk of Japanese militarist forces.

    Together, the two countries were the mainstay of resistance against Japanese militarism and German Nazism, making pivotal contributions to the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War.

    This was the second time for Xi to attend Russia’s Victory Day celebrations. Ten years ago, he traveled to Moscow for the 70th anniversary. In the same year, Putin also attended China’s Victory Day parade on Sept. 3 in Beijing to commemorate the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

    The past decade has been one of profound turbulence and transformation in the international landscape, Xi noted when meeting the press with Putin on Thursday.

    In the face of the changes of the world, of the times and of historical significance, China and Russia should keep a firm grasp on the development direction of bilateral ties and the general trend of the development of human society, Xi said, calling for greater joint efforts in safeguarding international fairness and justice.

    Ahead of Xi’s visit, Russian media published the Chinese leader’s signed article titled “Learning from History to Build Together a Brighter Future.”

    “Indeed, historical memory and truth will not fade with the passage of time. They serve as inspirations that mirror the present and illuminate the future. We must learn from history, especially the hard lessons of the Second World War,” he wrote.

    IRONCLAD FRIENDSHIPS

    During bilateral meetings with Venezuelan, Cuban and Serbian leaders attending Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, Xi reaffirmed ironclad friendships between China and the three countries, emphasizing the importance of deepening cooperation in various sectors.

    In his meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Xi noted that China and Venezuela have forged an ironclad friendship amid the changing international situation.

    Since the two countries elevated bilateral relations to an all-weather strategic partnership in 2023, exchanges across various sectors and at all levels have been vigorous, bilateral trade has grown continuously, new progress has been made in investment cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, and friendship between the two sides has become increasingly popular among the two peoples, Xi said.

    He said China has always viewed and developed relations with Venezuela from a strategic and long-term perspective and is willing to enhance the exchange of governance experience with Venezuela, continue to deepen practical cooperation in various areas and take bilateral ties to new heights, so as to better benefit the two peoples.

    While meeting with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, Xi noted that this year marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Cuba, adding that China is willing to further consolidate the ironclad friendship with Cuba, build a closer China-Cuba community with a shared future, and set an example of solidarity and cooperation among socialist countries and sincere mutual assistance among developing countries.

    Xi called on both sides to promote steady progress in exchanges at all levels and cooperation in various fields, and ensure that high-level political mutual trust always remains a distinct feature of relations between the two ruling parties and the two countries.

    In his meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Xi urged the two sides to carry forward the ironclad friendship, boost mutually beneficial cooperation and advance the high-quality building of a China-Serbia community with a shared future.

    China is ready to deepen strategic communication with Serbia, enhance mutual support, strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, continue supporting the construction and operation of relevant projects, give full play to their demonstrative effect, and achieve more outcomes that deliver mutual benefit and win-win results, Xi said.

    UPHOLDING MULTILATERALISM

    In these bilateral meetings on Friday, Xi also reaffirmed China’s commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation, and emphasized the importance of working together to address global challenges.

    During his meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Xi said that China stands ready to work with Slovakia and other countries to jointly address challenges through solidarity and cooperation and safeguard international fairness and justice.

    Fico said that the Slovak side stands ready to join efforts with China to uphold multilateralism, safeguard free trade rules, and maintain the stability of global industrial and supply chains.

    During the meeting with Maduro, Xi said that China is ready to work with Venezuela and other Latin American countries to firmly uphold the UN-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law.

    For his part, Maduro said that Venezuela is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China to uphold multilateralism, defend international fairness and justice, and safeguard the common interests of the international community.

    In the meeting with Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing, Xi urged the two sides to jointly uphold the UN-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries.

    In the meeting with Diaz-Canel, Xi urged the two sides to enhance coordination and cooperation within such frameworks as the BRICS and the China-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Forum, oppose power politics and unilateral bullying, and safeguard international fairness and justice.

    Diaz-Canel said Cuba supports the three major global initiatives proposed by China, and is willing to work with China to jointly oppose unilateralism and protectionism, and to safeguard the common interests of the international community.

    In his meeting with Serbia’s Vucic, Xi said China is ready to work with all countries in the world, including Serbia, to unite and cooperate to meet challenges, jointly safeguard world peace and international fairness and justice, safeguard the achievements of economic globalization, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

    Vucic commends China’s steadfast support for multilateralism, noting that China’s visions and actions have bolstered the international community’s courage and confidence in safeguarding common interests.

    Serbia stands ready to unite with China in addressing the challenges posed by unilateralism and protectionism, Vucic added.

    A teenager has died after a serious incident in Napier overnight.

    Police were called to a disorder event on Alexander Avenue in Onekawa, about 3.10am today, said Detective Inspector Martin James, District Manager Criminal Investigations.

    “On arrival, a teenage boy was found critically injured at an Alexander Avenue address. Despite all efforts by ambulance staff, he died at the scene.

    “At the same time, a second injured teenager was located at a Cottrell Crescent address. He was transported to hospital in a serious condition but has since been discharged.

    “Enquiries are in the very early stages and Police are providing support to the whānau of both victims.”

    Detective Inspector James said a disorder event involving a group of people on Dinwiddie Avenue may be linked to the incident.

    A scene examination is ongoing, and cordons remain in place at the intersections of Hitchings Avenue and Alexander Avenue, Dinwiddie Avenue and Wallis Place, and Alexander Avenue, near Dinwiddie Avenue.

    “Police will have a noticeable presence in the area while that work continues.

    “We are speaking with a number of people as part of the investigation, but we urgently want to hear from anyone who was in the area, or anyone who took photos or video of the altercation on Dinwiddie Avenue.

    “A number of investigators are working to determine what occurred and why, and we urge anyone who can assist our enquiries to contact us as soon as possible.”

    Police investigating an aggravated robbery in Marton are appealing for information from the public.

    On Saturday 10 May, Police received a report of a person entering a commercial premises on Broadway at around 10pm.

    The alleged offender threatened an employee with a weapon before taking cash.

    The employee was uninjured, however is understandably shaken by the incident.

    Prior to Police arrival, the alleged offender fled the area on foot.

    Manawatu Police would like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the aggravated robbery or may have information that could assist in our invesitgation.

    Police would also like to hear from anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage in the Broadway area between 9.30pm and 11pm on Saturday night.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Indonesia’s Pacific manoeuvres – money, military, and silencing West Papua

    On April 24, 2025, Indonesia made a masterful geopolitical move. Jakarta granted Fiji US$6 million in financial aid and offered to cooperate with them on military training — a seemingly benign act of diplomacy that conceals a darker purpose.

    This strategic manoeuvre is the latest in Indonesia’s efforts to neutralise Pacific support for the independence movement in West Papua.

    “There’s no need to be burdened by debt,” declared Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the bilateral meeting at Jakarta’s Merdeka Palace.

    More significantly, he pledged Fiji’s respect for Indonesian sovereignty — diplomatic code for abandoning West Papua’s struggle for self-determination.

    This aligns perfectly with Indonesia’s Law No. 2 of 2023, which established frameworks for defence cooperation, including joint research, technology transfer, and military education, between the two nations.

    This is not merely a partnership — it is ideological assimilation.

    Indonesia’s financial generosity comes with unwritten expectations. By integrating Fijian forces into Indonesian military training programmes, Jakarta aims to export its “anti-separatist” doctrine, which frames Papuan resistance as a “criminal insurgency” rather than legitimate political expression.

    The US $6 million is not aid — it’s a strategic investment in regional complicity.

    Geopolitical chess in a fractured world
    Indonesia’s manoeuvres must be understood in the context of escalating global tensions.

    The rivalry between the US and China has transformed the Indo-Pacific into a strategic battleground, leaving Pacific Island nations caught between competing spheres of influence.

    Although Jakarta is officially “non-aligned,” it is playing both sides to secure its territorial ambitions.

    Its aid to Fiji is one move in a comprehensive regional strategy to diplomatically isolate West Papua.

    By strengthening economic and military ties with strategically positioned nations, Indonesia is systematically undermining Papuan representation in important forums such as the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), and the United Nations.

    While the world focuses on superpower competition, Indonesia is quietly strengthening its position on what it considers an internal matter — effectively removing West Papua from international discourse.

    The Russian connection: Shadow alliances
    Another significant yet less examined relationship is Indonesia’s growing partnership with Russia, particularly in defence technology, intelligence sharing, and energy cooperation

    This relationship provides Jakarta with advanced military capabilities and reduces its dependence on Western powers and China.

    Russia’s unwavering support for territorial integrity, as evidenced by its position on Crimea and Ukraine, makes it an ideal partner for Indonesia’s West Papua policy.

    Moscow’s diplomatic support strengthens Jakarta’s argument that “separatist” movements are internal security issues rather than legitimate independence struggles.

    This strategic triangulation — balancing relations with Washington, Beijing, and Moscow– allows Indonesia to pursue regional dominance with minimal international backlash. Each superpower, focused on countering the others’ influence, overlooks Indonesia’s systematic suppression of Papuan self-determination.

    Institutionalising silence: Beyond diplomacy
    The practical consequence of Indonesia’s multidimensional strategy is the diplomatic isolation of West Papua. Historically positioned to advocate for Melanesian solidarity, Fiji now faces economic incentives to remain silent on Indonesian human rights abuses.

    A similar pattern emerges across the Pacific as Jakarta extends these types of arrangements to other regional players.

    It is not just about temporary diplomatic alignment; it is about the structural transformation of regional politics.

    When Pacific nations integrate their security apparatuses with Indonesia’s, they inevitably adopt Jakarta’s security narratives. Resistance movements are labelled “terrorist threats,” independence advocates are branded “destabilising elements,” and human rights concerns are dismissed as “foreign interference”.

    Most alarmingly, military cooperation provides Indonesia with channels to export its counterinsurgency techniques, which are frequently criticised by human rights organisations for their brutality.

    Security forces in the Pacific trained in these approaches may eventually use them against their own Papuan advocacy groups.

    The price of strategic loyalty
    For just US$6 million — a fraction of Indonesia’s defence budget — Jakarta purchases Fiji’s diplomatic loyalty, military alignment, and ideological compliance. This transaction exemplifies how economic incentives increasingly override moral considerations such as human rights, indigenous sovereignty, and decolonisation principles that once defined Pacific regionalism.

    Indonesia’s approach represents a sophisticated evolution in its foreign policy. No longer defensive about West Papua, Jakarta is now aggressively consolidating regional support, methodically closing avenues for international intervention, and systematically delegitimising Papuan voices on the global stage.

    Will the Pacific remember its soul?
    The path ahead for West Papua is becoming increasingly treacherous. Beyond domestic repression, the movement now faces waning international support as economic pragmatism supplants moral principle throughout the Pacific region.

    Unless Pacific nations reconnect with their anti-colonial heritage and the values that secured their independence, West Papua’s struggle risks fading into obscurity, overwhelmed by geopolitical calculations and economic incentives.

    The question facing the Pacific region is not simply about West Papua, but about regional identity itself. Will Pacific nations remain true to their foundational values of indigenous solidarity and decolonisation? Or will they sacrifice these principles on the altar of transactional diplomacy?

    The date April 24, 2025, may one day be remembered not only as the day Indonesia gave Fiji US$6 million but also as the day the Pacific began trading its moral authority for economic expediency, abandoning West Papua to perpetual colonisation in exchange for short-term gains.

    The Pacific is at a crossroads — it can either reclaim its voice or resign itself to becoming a theatre where greater powers dictate the fate of indigenous peoples. For West Papua, everything depends on which path is chosen.

    BEIJING, May 10 — Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia has further consolidated the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era, led the world in jointly maintaining the postwar international order, and promoted the multi-polarization of the world and the reconstruction of the international political landscape, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Saturday.

    At the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Xi paid a state visit to Russia and attended the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War from Wednesday to Saturday.

    Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said during a press briefing that Xi’s visit has great historical significance.

    During his visit, Xi and Putin had in-depth communication on issues of common concern for nearly 10 hours, Wang said, adding that the most important political outcome of the visit was the signing of a joint statement on deepening the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era by the two heads of state.

    The two sides agreed to continue expanding cooperation and to consolidate the foundation of economic, trade and energy cooperation, Wang said, adding that the two sides signed a new version of the investments protection agreement, effectively countering the countercurrent of protectionism.

    Regarding the Ukraine crisis, Xi noted that China welcomes all efforts conducive to peace, and believes it is important to accommodate the legitimate security concerns of all countries and eliminate the root causes of the crisis.

    Xi’s attendance at the May 9 Victory Day celebrations once again demonstrated China’s commitment to working with other countries to uphold a correct historical perspective on World War II (WWII) and jointly safeguard the postwar international order, Wang said.

    Amid a complex and turbulent international landscape, Xi said, China and Russia must firmly uphold the UN-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law.

    Wang said that Taiwan’s restoration to China is a victorious outcome of WWII and an integral part of the postwar international order.

    No matter how the situation on the Taiwan island evolves or what troubles external forces may make, the historical trend toward China’s ultimate and inevitable reunification is unstoppable, Xi said.

    During his visit, Xi also had extensive contacts with political leaders from various countries attending the celebrations and held bilateral meetings with several national leaders from three continents, reaching broad consensus on firmly supporting each other, defending multilateralism and opposing power politics and bullying.

    During his meeting with Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing, Xi emphasized that the Chinese side supports Myanmar in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national stability, and steadily advancing its domestic political agenda.

    While meeting with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, respectively, Xi pointed out that Latin American and Caribbean States are sovereign and independent nations, not anyone’s backyard.

    Diaz-Canel and Maduro spoke highly of Xi’s vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind as well as the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative.     A dedicated webinar on “The Gap Fund: Supporting Armenian Municipalities Towards Climate Finance” was held on 8 May 2025, marking a significant milestone in the engagement of Armenian cities in climate resilience and disaster risk reduction. Organized by the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) partnership with the City Climate Finance Gap Fund — a committed member of the MCR2030 Regional Coordinating Committee — the event brought together municipal representatives, urban planners, and DRR practitioners from across Armenia.

    In collaboration with UNDRR, COM EAST, and the National Platform for DRR in Armenia (ARNAP Foundation), the webinar introduced the Gap Fund’s objectives and application process, providing Armenian municipalities with practical guidance on accessing early-stage technical assistance for low-carbon, climate-resilient projects.   • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Wellington Queer Communities Protest Against NZ First’s Anti-Trans Bill

    On Saturday 8 May, around 400 protesters rallied with Queer Endurance in Defiance (QED), protesting against a proposed member’s bill by NZ First MP Jenny Marcroft, which aims to legally exclude trans people from definitions of “man” and “woman.”

    NZ First leader Winston Peters announced on 22 April that the bill will define a woman as an “adult human biological female” and a man as an “adult human biological male.” The wording of the bill reflects that of a recent ruling from Britain’s Supreme Court, which similarly excluded trans women from the definition of women.

    QED activists say both moves seek to facilitate the exclusion of trans people from social services and public life. QED spokesperson Tristan-Cordelia Egarr noted that the government had already indicated moves to restrict access to puberty blockers for trans rangatahi, and erase queer and trans people from Relationships and Sexuality Education in schools.

    Egarr also noted that “instead of focusing on the most pressing issues facing New Zealanders – the cost of living crisis, child poverty, the climate crisis, our overburdened healthcare system – Peters and the government are presenting these transparent attempts to distract and divide us by targeting an already marginalised and vulnerable community.”

    “Now more than ever, trans communities need support. Join Queer Endurance in Defiance, or your local queer organisation, and help us demonstrate that we will not be defined out of existence. We trans people will continue to exist, and we will continue to resist.”

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Largest water drop-shaped installation of Dancing Water Drops Exhibition on display tomorrow (with photos)

    The Dancing Water Drops Exhibition, the large-scale art installations exhibition in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Dongjiang water supply to Hong Kong, will present a 28.8-metre-tall water drop-shaped installation for the first time tomorrow (May 11). It is by far the largest of its kind among similar exhibitions. The exhibition will run until June 13 at Tamar Park and the Central and Western District Promenade (Central Section).

    In her speech at the launching ceremony for the giant water drop-shaped installation today (May 10), the Secretary for Development, Ms Bernadette Linn, said that the installation is by far the largest and tallest of its kind, signifying that the uninterrupted water supply from Dongjiang to Hong Kong over the past 60 years is like a mother’s unconditional love and care for her children. She encouraged the public to visit the exhibition with family and friends on Mother’s Day and take photos with the giant water drop-shaped installation at the beautiful Victoria Harbourfront, and reinforce their understanding about the importance of Dongjiang water and be grateful for the care rendered by the country. 

    Other officiating guests included the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Ricky Lau; the Acting Director of Water Supplies, Mr Stanley Chan; internationally acclaimed artist Simon Ma; Vice Chairmen of the DC Charity Foundation Mr Richard Lo and Mr Edwin Chuang; and the director of the Po Leung Kuk, Ms Fay Cheung.

    The Dancing Water Drops Exhibition was specially created by Simon Ma in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Dongjiang’s water supply to Hong Kong. The display of “never-fall” water drop-shaped installations of various sizes symbolises the vitality that Dongjiang water brings to Hong Kong and social inclusion, as well as the “never-give-up spirit” of Hong Kong people.     HONOLULU — The following is a statement from Governor Josh Green, M.D., relating to the Board of Land and Natural Resources decision on the final EIS by the U.S. Army for the Pōhakuloa Training Area on Hawai‘i Island.

    “I respect the Board’s decision and the community voices that guide it. Military members who utilize this area to train for local and national security and emergency missions are our neighbors, our children’s classmates, and often our own ʻohana. While the rejection of the Final EIS presents challenges, it is not the end of the conversation. We remain committed to finding new paths that protect Hawai‘i’s natural and cultural resources while supporting national security. This is a time for collaboration, not division, as we seek balanced solutions that honor both our heritage and our future.”

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: No Justice for State Abuse Survivors- Kapa-Kingi

    Te Pāti Māori MP for Te Tai Tokerau calls out the government’s decision to keep funding state abuse, turning their backs on justice and real change for abuse in care survivors.

    “The government has committed to throwing $744 million down the drain, reinforcing a violent regime of disrespect against the expertise and experience of survivors” said Te Pāti Māori spokesperson for Oranga Tamariki Mariameno Kapa-Kingi.

    “Survivors bared their souls to the Royal Commission and its findings were meant to deliver transformational change, not serve as an inquiry for nothing. Minister Erica Stanford should be deeply ashamed of herself, as should every other complicit member of parliament in the coalition government.

    “Stanford has assumed she knows better than those who have lived and survived state abuse, throwing away money top-ups to cover up the fact that government has yet again ignored key recommendations.

    “We need to see these ‘band-aid for bullet wounds’ approaches for what they truly are, cover-ups and superficial solutions to deep systemic failures” said Kapa-Kingi.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Fulfilling police career goals

    Since 2024, the Police Force has partnered with three post-secondary institutions to offer the Diploma of Applied Education – Police Cadet Training Programme. Through classroom learning, physical training and outdoor experiences, the programme aims to better prepare young people who aspire to join the force.

    Personal growth

    One such trainee is Park Hae-jun, a 27-year-old born in Hong Kong to Korean parents. Before joining the programme, he voluntarily returned to Korea to complete his military service, hoping to build discipline and confidence.

    “I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I consider Hong Kong my home – that is why I chose to come back,” he said.

    He shared that the programme offered far more than textbook knowledge. Instructors taught him how to manage conflict and overcome challenges.

    “When we face stress or setbacks, most of us want to give up. But here, we are trained to solve problems. The perseverance we have learned will not only help us in our careers but also in life.”

    Hands-on learning

     Another trainee, 19-year-old Sae-ung Wing-man, described the field trips as being the most valuable part of the programme.

    “They helped me to understand the work of the department I want to join, and how officers deal with different situations every day.” .

    Wing-man has long aspired to join the force in order to support the public.

    “The job is meaningful. It helps citizens solve problems. I want to be someone people can rely on.

    “In preparation, I will further improve my physical fitness, stress management, legal knowledge and communication skills.”

    Preparatory training

    The Police Cadet School was established in 1973 and fulfilled its historical mission by 1990. Chief Inspector Wong Tak-choi, now responsible for physical and experiential training at the Police College, was once a cadet himself.

    He hopes that the trainees of the Police Cadet Training Programme can carry forward the spirit of the Police Cadet school.

    “Training methods may have changed, but our purpose remains the same – we want to nurture passionate young people who are ready to serve the community,” he said.

    He also noted that many who fail to complete police training often lack physical or mental preparation – areas the cadet training programme addresses directly.

    Course structure

    The Police Force has co-organised this one-year training programme with the Caritas Institute of Community Education, the Hong Kong College of Technology, and the Hong Kong Institute of Technology.

    Apart from core and supplementary subjects, the curriculum includes a 180-hour elective cluster titled “Police Cadet Training”, which is composed of “Police Studies”, “Police Recruit Preparatory Training” and “Physical & Mindset Development”.

    Upon graduation, the trainees can attain a qualification equivalent to Level 2 in five Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education subjects, meeting the academic requirement for police constable recruitment. 

    Final challenge

     After completing 22 weeks of police cadet training, the cadets took part in a passing-out parade. The event was inspected by Commissioner of Police Chow Yat-ming, who witnessed their growth and expressed his high expectations for their future success.

    He highlighted that the final challenge includes a five-day, four-night “hell week” involving outdoor endurance tasks similar to the Outward Bound adventure training. Mr Chow joined cadets on the final early morning hike to Tai Mo Shan and expressed that he was impressed by how spirited they were.

    “Some cadets had been injured earlier and could not complete the whole week, but they still tried to take part. Others felt exhausted, but they would still hold their heads up and pressed on.”

    During a sharing session on the mountain, cadets reflected on their experiences and Mr Chow shared his own.

    “The police career is long. Sometimes it feels lonely or dark – like the weather that day. But when you work as a team, someone will lead, and soon you will see the sunshine.”

    Future vision

    Mr Chow revealed that the cadet programme took more than three years to develop. He acknowledged the challenges, but praised his team for their dedication.

    “It was like witnessing the birth of a child,” he stated.

    In addition to preparing future officers, Mr Chow stressed that he hopes the programme will revive the spirit of the former cadet school, whose graduates served with distinction across the force.

    “They lived by the values of wisdom, courage, integrity and perseverance. I hope this new generation will carry that torch forward.”
