  • RBI eases policy stance: How the latest repo rate cut fits into broader economic trends

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

In a significant move to bolster economic activity, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday reduced the policy repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.50%. The decision was announced following the 55th meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), held from June 4 to 6.

Consequently, the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate has been adjusted to 5.25%, while both the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate now stand at 5.75%. These changes aim to achieve the medium-term target of 4% consumer price index (CPI) inflation, within a tolerance band of ±2%, while also enhancing growth momentum.

    Economic Outlook

The RBI’s policy statement acknowledges a mix of positive and negative factors influencing the economy. While global economic uncertainties persist, recent trends indicate easing market volatility, a recovery in equity markets, and a softening of the dollar index and crude oil prices. However, gold prices remain elevated.

Data from the National Statistical Office (NSO) released on May 30 revealed that India’s real GDP growth for Q4 of 2024-25 was 7.4%, up from 6.4% in Q3. The real Gross Value Added (GVA) increased by 6.8% in the same quarter. For the entire fiscal year 2024-25, real GDP growth was recorded at 6.5%, with real GVA at 6.4%.

Looking ahead, the RBI projects a real GDP growth of 6.5% for 2025-26, with quarterly estimates of 6.5% in Q1, 6.7% in Q2, 6.6% in Q3, and 6.3% in Q4. These projections are based on sustained private consumption, increased fixed capital formation, and supportive government capital expenditure.

However, the policy also notes potential downside risks, including prolonged geopolitical tensions, global trade uncertainties, and weather-related challenges.

  • Inflation eases to 3.2% in April 2025; RBI projects continued moderation

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reported a significant decline in consumer price index (CPI) inflation, which moderated to 3.2% year-on-year in April 2025—the lowest in nearly six years. This marks the sixth consecutive month of declining food inflation, while core inflation remained steady during March and April.

    Favorable Agricultural Outlook

The RBI attributes this decline to several factors, including record wheat production, higher yields of key pulses during the Rabi season, and an anticipated above-normal southwest monsoon. These developments are expected to ensure adequate supply of essential food items, contributing to the moderation of inflation expectations, particularly among rural households.

Additionally, projections indicate a continued decrease in the prices of major commodities, including crude oil. However, the RBI cautions that weather-related uncertainties and evolving tariff concerns could impact global commodity prices, necessitating vigilant monitoring.

    Inflation Projections

Taking these factors into account, the RBI projects CPI inflation for the financial year 2025-26 at 3.7%, with quarterly estimates as follows:

    Q1: 2.9%

    Q2: 3.4%

    Q3: 3.9%

    Q4: 4.4%

The RBI emphasizes that while the outlook is favorable, it remains essential to stay alert to potential risks that could affect inflation trajectories.

  • Carlsen puts meltdown behind him to win Norway Chess tournament

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Chess great Magnus Carlsen recovered from his meltdown against world champion Gukesh Dommaraju last weekend to win the Norway Chess tournament on Friday.

The Norwegian world number one drew his last game against India’s Arjun Erigaisi but it proved enough for him to finish on 16 points, half a point ahead of American Fabiano Caruana.

Indian Gukesh, who lost to Caruana in the final game, ended up third on 14.5 points.

“It’s a huge relief after a day like this, a tournament like this,” Carlsen said.

Last Sunday, Carlsen had Gukesh on the ropes for much of their game but his composure cracked under the pressure of a ticking clock and he committed a blunder that handed Gukesh a decisive advantage.

Carlsen slammed his fist on the table after the defeat before exchanging a quick handshake with Gukesh, apologising for his outburst and storming off.

“Obviously my struggles here have been well documented but at least I fought until the end,” the five-time classical world champion, who did not defend his title in 2023 citing a lack of motivation, said.

“I’m not going to say that this tournament was my last (in standard chess) for sure, but I enjoy other forms of chess a lot more.”

Source: State University of Management – Official website of the State –

On June 5, 2025, the Moscow Academic Economic Forum (MAEF-2025) ended, part of the working program of which was held at the State University of Management.

This year, the Moscow Academic Economic Forum was dedicated to the 260th anniversary of the founding of the Free Economic Society of Russia and was devoted to the topic “Russia – 2025: the trajectory of dynamic balanced socio-economic development”. MAEF brought together more than 17.5 thousand specialists from 32 countries, including China, India, Canada, Cuba, Germany, Greece, South Africa, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

At the ceremonial final plenary session of the MAEF, Vladimir Stroyev, Rector of the State University of Management, spoke: “We are grateful to the Free Economic Society of Russia for the trust to hold part of the forum’s working program at our university. The conference was devoted to discussing issues related to the socio-economic development of Russia. All events of the Free Economic Society are of great interest to the teaching, scientific and student community at our university, so we are glad to be part of this forum today. I hope that we will continue our cooperation and do a lot of useful things for the benefit of Russia and its economy.”

According to the President of the Free Economic Society of Russia Sergey Bodrunov, the strong regional component has become the hallmark of the MAEF. This year, in anticipation of the central events of the forum, work was carried out at 115 regional sites, which were formed on the basis of the leading universities and research centers of the country, divisions and institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and regional organizations of the VEO of Russia.

The plenary session of the MAEF was held on June 4 at the Russian Academy of Sciences, and plenary conferences on June 5 were hosted by 13 sites of leading universities and research centers. The plenary conference on the topic of “Institutes for Balanced Socioeconomic Development of Russia” was held at the State University of Management.

The conference participants discussed a wide range of issues aimed at achieving balanced socio-economic development: the formation of new development institutions, strategic planning, human capital, interdepartmental cooperation, digital technologies and scientific and educational clusters.

The following key recommendations were developed as a result of the conference:

Coordination of development institutions. It was proposed to work out the issue of creating a single coordination mechanism for coordinating the actions of development institutions, aimed at implementing technological and industrial sovereignty in the context of structural transformation of the economy. Solving the problem of personnel shortage. The conference participants noted the paramount importance of the problem of systemic personnel shortage as the main limitation for achieving the goals of economic policy. It was proposed to strengthen interdepartmental and interlevel formats of labor force planning over a 5-15 year horizon, including advanced training of specialists for priority projects. Moreover, the State University of Management is one of the ambassadors of project-based learning. Transition to systemic measures of economic policy. Recognize the need to transition from targeted to systemic measures of economic policy aimed at long-term sustainability and increasing domestic demand for scientific, engineering and production competencies. Formation of a national model of integrated strategic planning. Conference participants expressed support for the idea of creating a national model of integrated strategic planning, which will include monitoring of resource, institutional and demographic constraints, as well as mechanisms for compensating for them through appropriate institutional and financial instruments.

Also, within the framework of MAEF, a youth conference was held, following which GUU student Ekaterina Glyzina (IOM, 2nd year) received a 1st degree diploma in the section “New solutions for the digital age: from theory to practice”.

We congratulate Ekaterina on her diploma, and our entire university on the successful holding of this important event.

He cited recent examples such as Cyclone Remal in India and Bangladesh, Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean, Typhoon Yagi in Southeast Asia, Hurricane Helene in the United States, Typhoon Usagi in the Philippines, and Cyclone Chido in parts of Africa as stark reminders of the devastation caused by extreme weather events. These incidents, he said, underscore the urgent need for proactive disaster management and the development of resilient infrastructure.

Reflecting on India’s own experiences with major natural disasters, including the super-cyclone of 1999 and the tsunami of 2004, PM Modi spoke about how India not only recovered but also laid the groundwork for long-term resilience. The construction of cyclone shelters in vulnerable coastal regions and the establishment of a tsunami warning system that now benefits 29 countries were cited as key achievements in India’s disaster preparedness journey.

The Prime Minister also praised the ongoing efforts of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), which is currently collaborating with 25 Small Island Developing States to construct robust homes, hospitals, schools, energy systems, and water security solutions. He noted the importance of early warning systems in these efforts and welcomed the active participation of countries from the Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Caribbean regions. The PM also lauded the involvement of the African Union in the coalition’s expanding network.

PM Modi outlined his vision for global disaster resilience by identifying five key priorities. He called for the integration of disaster resilience education and skill development in higher learning institutions to equip the next generation with the tools needed to tackle future challenges. He proposed the creation of a global digital repository to document and share lessons learned from disaster-hit regions that have rebuilt with resilience.

Stressing the importance of financial accessibility, the PM advocated for the development of innovative and actionable financing mechanisms to ensure that developing countries can access critical funds for infrastructure. He reiterated India’s recognition of Small Island Developing States as “Large Ocean Countries,” emphasizing the need to focus global attention on their unique vulnerabilities.

Lastly, PM Modi stressed the critical role of strengthening early warning systems and enhancing coordination to enable timely decisions and ensure that communication effectively reaches the last mile during emergencies.

  • Seeds of change: India’s agricultural evolution under PM Modi

Agriculture has long been the soul of India’s economy and society. Over the past eleven years, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s agricultural landscape has been redefined by a holistic, inclusive, and tech-driven approach that is embodied in the principle of Beej Se Bazaar Tak, or Seed to Market. This transformation puts the farmer at the center of policy-making, with a focus on income security, smart farming, traditional wisdom, and global competitiveness.

Rising investment in the agriculture sector

Recognising the critical role of agriculture, the government substantially increased funding to the sector. The Budget Estimates for the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare rose from ₹27,663 crore in 2013–14 to ₹1,37,664 crore in 2024–25. This more than fivefold jump in allocation has enabled investments in infrastructure, innovation, and farmer welfare.

Growth in foodgrain and climate-resilient crops

India’s foodgrain production has grown significantly, from 265.05 million tonnes in 2014–15 to an estimated 347.44 million tonnes in 2024–25. This includes major staples like rice, wheat, pulses, and oilseeds. The focus has also shifted toward increasing production of climate-resilient and nutrition-rich crops, with support for coarse grains, pulses, and oilseeds witnessing sharp growth.

Strengthening procurement and minimum support prices

The government has significantly increased Minimum Support Prices and procurement. Between 2014 and 2025, procurement of 14 Kharif crops reached 7871 LMT, compared to 4679 LMT in the previous decade. The MSP for wheat rose from ₹1,400 in 2013–14 to ₹2,425 in 2024–25, and payments to farmers more than doubled. The MSP for paddy increased from ₹1,310 to ₹2,369 per quintal in the same period. Procurement and MSP support for pulses and oilseeds grew exponentially, empowering farmers in previously underserved regions.

Financial empowerment through direct benefit and credit

Financial empowerment of farmers has become a central theme. Under the PM-KISAN scheme, ₹3.7 lakh crore has been directly transferred to over 11 crore farmers, ensuring income support with full transparency via Direct Benefit Transfer. Kisan Credit Cards have been issued to 7.71 crore farmers, enabling credit access worth ₹10 lakh crore. The credit limit has been raised from ₹3 to ₹5 lakh.

    Insurance, irrigation and sustainable practices

Risk management and sustainability are also key components of the new agricultural strategy. The PM Fasal Bima Yojana has enrolled over 63 crore farmers and paid ₹1.75 lakh crore in crop loss claims. The PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana has invested ₹93,000 crore in irrigation infrastructure, making farming more drought-resistant. The Soil Health Card Scheme has issued 1.75 crore cards and upgraded 8,272 testing labs, encouraging balanced fertiliser use.

Laying the foundation for long-term prosperity

With increased investment, income support, insurance, and irrigation, India’s agricultural foundation has been strengthened. These reforms are not just about enhancing output, but about empowering every farmer with dignity, stability, and opportunity.

  • From innovation to inclusion: Empowering rural India through agriculture

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

India’s agricultural landscape has undergone a historic transformation over the past decade. As the sector becomes more resilient and productive, the focus under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has moved beyond traditional methods to a broader vision—market access, diversification, climate-smart farming, and inclusive rural empowerment.

    Infrastructure driving change

At the heart of this transformation is robust infrastructure development. The ₹1 lakh crore Agriculture Infrastructure Fund is supporting over 42,000 projects across India, including modern warehouses and food processing units. These facilities are key to reducing post-harvest losses and increasing farmers’ profits.

The PM Kisan Samriddhi Kendras, now numbering 1.8 lakh, serve as integrated agri-service centers, providing inputs, guidance, and market linkages. Simultaneously, the digital revolution in agriculture is taking root with the e-NAM platform connecting 1,473 mandis across 23 states and 4 union territories, enabling seamless trade worth ₹4 lakh crore. Mega Food Parks have surged from just two in 2014 to 41 in 2025, significantly boosting agro-processing and value addition.

Innovation and entrepreneurship at the grassroots

Innovation and women’s empowerment have emerged as defining features of this new era. The Namo Drone Didi initiative empowers 15,000 women-led self-help groups with drones, enhancing precision farming and creating new income streams. Meanwhile, the AgriSURE fund by NABARD, with a corpus of ₹750 crore, is backing high-potential agri-startups. Already, nearly 2,000 startups have scaled operations under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, integrating technology with grassroots farming.

    Diversifying income sources for farmers

Diversification beyond conventional crops is reshaping rural livelihoods. India continues to be the world’s top milk producer, with indigenous milk production rising by 69 percent and providing sustenance to 8 crore individuals. The fisheries sector has nearly doubled in output, supported by renewed attention to inland and marine ecosystems. Food processing capacity expanded from 12 to 242 lakh metric tonnes, while exports have doubled to $9 billion. Beekeeping, another high-value activity, reached 1.42 lakh metric tonnes in honey production, with exports tripling. Under the “Sweet Revolution,” 167 women self-help groups are actively participating.

    Towards sustainability and organic farming

Green energy and organic farming are driving the shift towards sustainability. The Ethanol Blending Programme has reached nearly 18 percent blending, ensuring better returns for sugarcane farmers and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The PM-KUSUM scheme is helping farmers adopt solar pumps and generate clean energy. Natural farming practices, promoted through Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana and the National Mission on Natural Farming, are gaining traction for being eco-friendly and cost-effective.

Reviving traditional grains and future foods

India has also emerged as a global leader in the millet renaissance. After the United Nations declared 2023 the International Year of Millets, India rebranded millets as “Shree Anna” and began promoting them as a health and climate-resilient food option. This revival has reintroduced traditional grains into modern diets and markets, both domestically and internationally.

    Strengthening the seed-to-market value chain

The entire agricultural chain—from seed to market—is now more robust than ever. The SMSP Scheme has enabled over six lakh seed villages, ensuring the supply of 530 lakh quintals of quality seeds. Digital tools like the SATHI Portal have brought transparency and traceability to seed distribution systems, empowering farmers with information and access.

    Expanding reach through new schemes

To consolidate these gains, new schemes have been introduced. The PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana targets productivity enhancement in 100 underperforming districts, impacting over 1.7 crore farmers. The One District One Product initiative encourages regional agri-specialties, promoting rural entrepreneurship. Additionally, the newly formed Makhana Board will strengthen the value chain and exports of this specialty crop from Bihar.

India’s agricultural journey today reflects more than just rising yields—it embodies a social and economic shift. From modernisation and digitisation to women-led innovation and renewable energy, the sector is poised to lead the way for rural prosperity. As the farmer transitions from food provider to growth driver, a new chapter in India’s development story is being written—one that is inclusive, entrepreneurial, and future-ready.

  • MIL-OSI China: Hong Kong’s new vitality a rebuttal to naysayers

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index closed at 23,792.54 points on Friday. The index has risen 18.6 percent from the end of last year.

The Hong Kong stock market — one of the best-performing markets this year — could offer an insight into the economic vitality of Hong Kong. The city’s initial public offering market had raised more than 76 billion HK dollars (about 9.7 billion U.S. dollars) by late May, a more than sevenfold increase over the same period in 2024.

Hong Kong’s economy is gaining steam. In the first quarter of this year, its real GDP grew 3.1 percent year on year. Recent data indicates its economic momentum has continued into the second quarter.

Hong Kong’s robust performance has even prompted Stephen Roach, a senior fellow at Yale University, to revise his declaration of the city’s demise in an article last year. In a recent Bloomberg report, the economist said that if he were writing a story again, it would be that Hong Kong is experiencing a revival because of its Chinese characteristics, not in spite of them.

Recent credit ratings have demonstrated Hong Kong’s resilience in maintaining stability amid increasing global economic and financial uncertainties. S&P has maintained Hong Kong’s “AA+” credit rating with a “stable” outlook. Moody’s has affirmed the city’s “Aa3” credit rating and upgraded the outlook from “negative” to “stable.”

The optimism of businesses is evident. The results of a survey conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong earlier this year revealed that 79 percent of respondents had no plans to move their headquarters away from Hong Kong in the next three years. The Fraser Institute’s Economic Freedom of the World 2024 Annual Report ranked Hong Kong as the world’s freest economy among 165 economies.

The region’s vitality can also be seen in its thriving tourism sector and other fields. In the first quarter, Hong Kong received 12.2 million visitor arrivals, up 9 percent year on year. The establishment of the International Organization for Mediation in Hong Kong will also bring new opportunities to the region.

Amid ongoing fluctuations in the global economic landscape, Hong Kong — firmly backed by its motherland — has once again demonstrated its exceptional dynamism and appeal.

This exemplifies the unique advantages of the “one country, two systems” policy. Hong Kong enjoys boundless opportunities by integrating actively into national development strategies, and by deepening international exchange and cooperation. Engaging in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development and the Belt and Road Initiative provides Hong Kong with crucial space for its growth.

As an international financial, shipping, and trade hub, Hong Kong has full confidence in sustaining its development and will embrace brighter prospects. Naysayers will be proved wrong again, as they have in the past.

  • Shubman Gill-led Indian team lands in London for Test series against England

    Source: Government of India (4)

The Shubman Gill-led Indian team arrived in London on Saturday ahead of the much-anticipated five-match Test series against England, which begins on June 20.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video of the team’s arrival in London on its social media handles. “Touchdown UK. Team India have arrived for the five-match Test series against England,” read the caption.

Jasprit Bumrah, Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Rishabh Pant, and Prasidh Krishna were all smiles during the journey. The squad appeared upbeat and ready for the long tour in English conditions.

Before departing from India, newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill reflected on the challenge of playing without stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who retired from the format last month.

“There is pressure every time you play a match or start a tour. So yes, there is pressure ahead of this series as well, but not any extra pressure. Rohit and Virat are very experienced players, and it’s difficult to fill their shoes. But as a team, we have plenty of experience and have played a lot of matches,” Gill said at the pre-departure press conference in Mumbai on Thursday.

“The players and the team are used to handling pressure. We are not an inexperienced side. The batting and bowling combinations in our team are quite strong,” the newly appointed Test skipper added.

Gill also spoke about his reaction upon learning he would be India’s new Test captain and said that the team has not yet decided on his batting position. He has previously opened the innings and also played at No. 3. With Rohit no longer in the mix, the team management must now decide who will partner Gill at the top—Yashasvi Jaiswal or Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is yet to make his debut.

“When I first heard that I would be getting this opportunity, it was quite overwhelming. It’s a big responsibility, and I’m looking forward to it. We still haven’t decided on the batting position yet—we have time. We’ll be playing a warm-up match in London, so that will help us finalize the batting order,” Gill said.

India are aiming to win a Test series in England for the first time since 2007. This series also marks India’s first assignment in the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle.

The 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum concluded in Brasília with a call for stronger cooperation among member nations on key global challenges, including terrorism, artificial intelligence (AI), and economic inclusion.

Addressing the forum, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla thanked the Brazilian Parliament, government, and people for hosting the summit. He said the forum witnessed “meaningful dialogue” and an “exchange of views” aimed at enhancing parliamentary ties among BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

In its final declaration, the forum strongly condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. Member states agreed on the need for a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and underlined the importance of joint global efforts. The Speaker reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for all countries to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.

The discussions also covered the future of AI, with consensus emerging on the importance of its responsible use. Birla noted that while AI is essential, its deployment must be guided by transparency and accountability.

Economic cooperation was another key focus area. The forum explored ways to deepen intra-BRICS trade and promote inclusive growth. “India has always supported the rule of law, global cooperation, and dialogue on the world stage,” Birla said.

India will host the next edition of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum. Birla said the agenda would cover a wide range of issues including AI, trade, and social development, and added that India would ensure the summit is “successful and productive.”

The LS Speaker expressed confidence that strengthened parliamentary exchanges and the sharing of best practices among BRICS members would bring about meaningful progress. He also extended his warm wishes to the Speakers and parliamentary leaders of all BRICS nations.

  • MIL-OSI China: Jackson Wang’s new single, festival show build hype for July album

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Pop icon Jackson Wang released his new single “Hate to Love” and its music video on June 6, following his electrifying performance at Head in the Clouds Festival 2025 in Los Angeles. The release builds momentum for his upcoming album, due in July.

Wang explores the sting of broken trust and the weight of betrayal on “Hate to Love.” The slow-burning, dreamy track delves deeper into the grief explored across the four chapters on Jackson’s upcoming album, “MagicMan 2,” set for release July 18. In this chapter, Jackson stands on the edge of everything he has known, holding a crown he never wanted, finally ready to let it fall before stepping into who he is meant to become.

“I’ve always questioned when I’m going to find love,” Jackson said. “But maybe the question is, ‘When am I going to love myself?’”

The release of “Hate to Love” is accompanied by a music video directed by James Mao, amplifying the song’s raw emotion. Itfeatures MagicMan, Jackson Wang’s alter ego, alone in darkness, grappling with the catharsis of confronting reality and choosing growth over illusion.

“People say to surround yourself with ‘good’ people, but I believe it’s really about finding the ‘right’ people— those who share a similar vision and values in life. But in reality, that’s not always how it works,” Wang said.”I wrote this song after realizing the only person I could trust was myself. I want you to know that I’m a better version of myself because of what happened to me.”

The singer, who boasts more than 100 million followers and is China’s most-followed artist on Instagram, stopped short of naming names. Far from a love song, this track delivers a raw revelation about exploitation, laying bare the emotional turmoil of broken trust and betrayal. His lyrics expose the pain: “Wish I could still trust you, trust you,” he sings. “It’s funny how people can be selfish. I give it all, give it all, give it all. But you still want more.”

Jackson’s self-produced album, created during a yearlong break from the spotlight, is his most personal and ambitious work to date. It channels unaddressed emotions into a raw, unfiltered journey. The album moves from manic highs fueled by denial to the painful process of facing a lost identity, setting boundaries, letting go of people-pleasing habits and, ultimately, finding peace through acceptance.

“Hate to Love,” the fourth single from the album, reached No. 34 on the Worldwide iTunes Song Chart, and its video drew more than 210,000 YouTube views in its first 19 hours.

Pre-orders for “MagicMan 2” are now available. The release follows the album’s four-chapter thematic structure, with phased product drops: Chapter One is on sale now, and Chapter Two will launch June 10. Retail-specific versions of the album will also be released in the coming weeks.

The album’s lead single,”High Alone,” debuted at No. 1 on Apple Music in 22 countries and regions. The follow-up, “GBAD,” went viral with more than 32 million YouTube views, fueled by popular remixes. The third single, “Buck,” featuring Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, has attracted more than 8.3 million views for its music video.

Wang and his friends lit up the stage at Head in the Clouds Festival 2025 on June 1 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, celebrating the event’s 10th anniversary. The pop star closed the night with the debut live performance of “Buck,” followed by a show-stopping “GBAD” remix featuring seven guest artists, including Higher Brothers and Number i. The explosive collaboration brought the crowd to its feet, instantly becoming one of the festival’s most talked-about moments.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Minister of National Defence Remarks at the Seoul Defence Dialogue

Source: Government of Canada News (2)

    September 11, 2024

    Minister Kim,
    Admiral Bauer,
    Excellencies,
    Colleagues and friends.

    Good morning to all.

It’s a very great privilege for me to be here today for the Seoul Defence Dialogue as part of my first official visit to Korea.

First of all, to Minister Kim, thank you for your very kind and warm hospitality, and your leadership both today at this very important Seoul Defence Dialogue, but also during yesterday’s United Nations Command Ministerial Meeting.

And to Admiral Bauer, I want to take the opportunity to thank you for your exemplary leadership of the NATO Military Committee and your invaluable contributions to our alliance.

As you have heard and understand, my co-panellists and I come from three very different parts of the world.

But notwithstanding our separation by distance and culture, we share a common goal of maintaining the rules-based international order which has delivered peace, stability and prosperity to all of our peoples.

And I believe that Canada has a unique role to play in achieving that goal because we are an Arctic nation, an Atlantic nation, and a Pacific nation.

For example, our Pacific coastline is roughly 25,000 kilometres long and our trade and security links with this region are vital, and strong, and growing.

In particular, Canada’s ties with the Republic of Korea run deep. Roughly 26,000 Canadians served here in Korea during the Korean War which was Canada’s third bloodiest conflict.

And since the very beginning, we’ve been part of the United Nations Command, upholding and helping to uphold the Korean Armistice Agreement, and working towards a lasting peace.

Canadian Armed Forces members also regularly deploy alongside members of Korea’s Armed Forces during regional exercises, including Exercise Rim of the Pacific which wrapped up only last month.

And Korea has become one of Canada’s largest trading partners in the Indo-Pacific, as well as our third-largest regional partner when it comes to defence materiel.

I believe very sincerely that there is much more that we can do together and that’s why we continue to make progress on our Action Plan to implement the Canada-Korea Strategic Partnership, which includes exploring more opportunities for our defence industries to work together.

I am very pleased that in 2022, our countries re-signed a Defence Materiel Cooperation MOU and that we are seeing daily evidence of growing ties between our defence industrial bases.

Relationships such as these, and those relationships fostered through this dialogue, are critical during increasingly difficult times.

As we are all aware, our world has become a far more dangerous place over the past few years.

A number of crises including Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and the Israeli-Hamas conflict in the Middle East are all evidence of the challenges that the rules-based order is facing in today’s world.

Here in the Indo-Pacific, we are seeing China undertaking the most rapid military build-up of any nation since the Second World War and it appears to intend to reshape the international system to suit its own goals.

And as we’ve seen in the last few months, China is challenging the freedom of navigation of the South China Sea, a waterway that is critical to regional and global prosperity.

And on occasion, it has repeatedly and dangerously obstructed the movement of Philippine vessels.

They clearly openly aspire to unite with Taiwan, and we believe very strongly that any instability in the Taiwan Strait would have a devastating effect to the global economy.

And closer to my country, China has deployed an increasing number of dual-purpose research vessels and surveillance platforms, collecting data about our Arctic and North.

And in the Arctic, we are seeing China working hard to increase its economic and military presence in cooperation with Russia.

It is clear that on matters of security, China’s interests may increasingly diverge from our own.

But I think it’s also essential to prevent misunderstanding. Clear communication with China is vital and I took the opportunity just this past June to hold our first meeting between a Chinese and Canadian defence minister in over 11 years.

And during that dialogue, I had the opportunity to make clear that foreign interference cannot be tolerated and expressed some concern about China’s military activity around Taiwan.

But we were able to agree together that there is a need for dialogue and cooperation in order to avoid conflict.

Likewise, we recognize the continued threat posed by North Korea. This includes the DPRK’s buildup in testing of ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction. Canada unequivocally condemns these actions in no uncertain terms.

And we’ve taken action by imposing sanctions on North Korea, along with the UN Security Council sanctions, which the Canadian Armed Forces uphold through Operation NEON.

Despite Russia’s attempts to undermine our work by vetoing the renewal of the UN Panel of Experts who track and report on evasion efforts, Canada will continue to monitor violations by the DPRK in cooperation with all of our international partners.

We call on North Korea to stop these programs and other aggressive activities, to resume its adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to pursue dialogue with the international community.

We are also concerned with China and North Korea’s deepening ties to Russia in support of its illegal invasion of Ukraine.

We will continue to call them out for their work to spread disinformation and conduct malicious cyber activities which threaten our critical infrastructure and can sow distrust and a lack of trust in our most important institutions.

In the face of these threats, the ties between Canada and our Indo-Pacific partners matter more now than ever, and that’s why in 2022, Canada released its Indo-Pacific Strategy.

This strategy serves as a critical roadmap for how we will engage in the region. It makes very clear that our partners and allies can expect to see more of us present in this region of the world.

We need to be a reliable and dependable partner and thanks to this strategy, our military presence in the Indo-Pacific is growing.

Last year, as well as this year, we have deployed and are deploying, three Canadian naval warships into the region for the first time in decades.

This increased presence is going to allow us to work more closely with partners including right here in the North Pacific.

Most recently, HMCS Vancouver has been sailing on Exercise PACIFIC VANGUARD.

As part of this mission, they’ve been training with members of the Korean, Japanese and American navies, strengthening their skills in maritime operations, anti-submarine warfare, air warfare operations and advanced maneuvering.

And through Operation NEON, we have been deploying our ships and aircraft to monitor UN sanction operations against North Korea and working with the military members of all like-minded Pacific countries.

As our people work and train together, they are learning valuable new skills and forging deeper bonds.

Likewise, as one of the 18 countries that participates in the United Nations Command, Canada will continue to do our part to maintain stability and security on the Korean Peninsula.

We have supported this mission from the very beginning, since 1953, and in the 71 years since this command was established, Canadian Armed Forces members have helped to enforce the Armistice Agreement and to reinforce deterrence.

We have taken on a variety of critical roles including serving right on the front lines of the De-Militarized Zone as part of the Military Assistance Commission.

And for the second time, a Canadian officer – currently Lieutenant General Macaulay, is currently serving as the Deputy Commander of the UNC.

Our increased presence here in the Indo-Pacific must be sustained and that is going to require significant new investments in our capabilities.

Earlier this year, I released an updated defence policy for my country.

It’s called Our North, Strong and Free, and through this policy we have identified the Indo-Pacific, Europe and the Arctic as key strategic regions of focus for our military.

We are investing almost $10 billion dollars to extend the life of our Halifax-class warships so that we can continue to deploy them right here and we’ve begun construction on a new fleet of River-Class Destroyers, launching the process to acquire up to 12 new conventionally-powered submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy.

These are new and improved capabilities that are necessary, allowing Canada to continue to bolster its presence here in the Indo-Pacific, to do our part, and to live up to our obligations to our international partners.

They will make us more interoperable with our closest partners and they will continue to contribute to deterrence.

Our intent is to ensure that Canada remains a reliable and valuable partner in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

We recognize that the world has changed and continues to change rapidly. We also acknowledge we’ve got to do more, and we will do more.

That’s why Canada has committed to investing 2% of its GDP in defence as rapidly as possible, and by 2032. As the security threats facing the Indo-Pacific and the world grow, we are stronger with like-minded partners who share our values.

And as a proud Pacific nation and a dedicated NATO ally, Canada truly values our close relationships with nations that share our aspirations.

Nations like the Republic of Korea, with whom we share a long and treasured friendship.

These are indeed uncertain times, but I believe that they are also times of opportunity and possibility.

Because we are stronger when we work together.

    When partners stand united.

And for Canada’s part, I want to assure you all that we are committed to this region, we are here to stay, and we will do our part.

And I believe that together we can maintain a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific, and defend the international rules that have kept us safe for nearly 80 years.

    Thank you. Merci.

And again, thank you for the kind invitation to be here.

  • India calls for global action on extreme heat risk at UNDRR session in Geneva

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Calling extreme heat a “global crisis,” Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Dr. P. K. Mishra urged coordinated international action during a keynote address at the Special Session on Extreme Heat Risk Governance hosted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in Geneva on Thursday.

Dr. Mishra’s remarks echoed the urgency expressed by the UN Secretary-General, highlighting that rising temperatures now pose a systemic threat to public health, economic stability, and ecological resilience worldwide.

“Heatwaves are no longer seasonal inconveniences; they are transboundary, systemic risks—especially for densely populated urban areas,” Dr. Mishra said, emphasizing the need for global collaboration on early warning systems, climate-resilient infrastructure, and equity-focused interventions.

    India’s Proactive Heat Risk Management

Detailing India’s experience, Dr. Mishra said the country has shifted from reactive disaster response to proactive and integrated heat risk management under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He noted that since 2016, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued comprehensive national guidelines for heatwave management—revised in 2019—which have enabled decentralized action through Heat Action Plans (HAPs).

India now has over 250 cities and districts across 23 heat-prone states operating localized HAPs, supported by NDMA’s advisory and technical frameworks. The Ahmedabad Heat Action Plan, a pioneering model, was cited as a successful example of how early warning systems, inter-agency coordination, and community outreach can significantly reduce mortality during heatwaves.

    Whole-of-Government, Whole-of-Society Approach

Dr. Mishra highlighted India’s “whole-of-government and whole-of-society” strategy, engaging ministries including health, agriculture, urban development, labor, power, education, and infrastructure.

“Extreme heat deeply impacts communities, and India has actively incorporated traditional wisdom and local experiences into its response,” he said, pointing to the role of schools in spreading climate awareness and of primary health centers in delivering frontline care during heat events.

India’s response also includes long-term urban resilience measures such as cool roof technologies, passive cooling centers, greening of urban spaces, and the revival of traditional water bodies. Importantly, the integration of Urban Heat Island (UHI) assessments into urban planning is becoming a standard practice in several cities.

Policy Shift to Enable Funding for Mitigation

Announcing a major policy shift, Dr. Mishra said that National and State Disaster Mitigation Funds (SDMF) can now be used for heatwave mitigation, allowing local governments, private sector entities, NGOs, and individuals to co-finance adaptation projects. This move, he said, reflects India’s commitment to shared responsibility and community-driven resilience.

    A Call for Global Cooperation

While acknowledging India’s progress, Dr. Mishra identified key global challenges, including the need for a localized heat-humidity index using real-time data, and the development of affordable, culturally appropriate passive cooling innovations.

He stressed that vulnerable populations—such as women, outdoor workers, the elderly, and children—are disproportionately impacted by extreme heat, and called for international mechanisms to ensure equitable adaptation.

Concluding his address, Dr. Mishra affirmed India’s support for the UNDRR’s Common Framework for Extreme Heat Risk Governance, describing it as a vital platform for shared learning, data sharing, institutional capacity building, and joint research.

“India is fully committed to sharing its expertise, technical capacities, and institutional strengths with global partners,” he said. “We must ensure a resilient, coordinated, and proactive global response to the rising threat of extreme heat.”

The office noted that, spanning 108 days from Monday to September 21, the event will bring POP MART’s globally popular characters, including Baby Molly, Crybaby Dimoo, and Labubu, to four iconic locations across Macao.

A special “pop station” was set up at Senado Square, featuring a pop-up shop and a Macao-themed Mega Space Molly Egg Tart installation, where visitors could collect themed postcards and stamps at each site.

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the tourism office, stated to the media that POP MART has a vast resource in terms of the number of fans worldwide. “When people come to take photos with the figures, they are also walking around the city and seeing different kinds of elements related to the city,” she added.

Ms. Lin from Guangzhou was visiting Macao particularly for the event. Showing her two Labubu dolls and delicate decorations, she said she had only recently become familiar with the character and had become quite interested in the IP series.

The project integrated a regional e-payment consumption lucky draw, open to users from Macao, Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Thailand, and Malaysia.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Ponsonby community up in arms over impending post office closure

    Asia Pacific Report

The community is up in arms over another local post office in Aotearoa New Zealand about to be closed down, this time in the iconic and historic Auckland inner city suburb of Ponsonby.

A local author and founder of Greenstone Pictures, John Harris, has led a pushback against plans to close the Ponsonby post office branch in Three Lamps next month with an undated open letter to the chief executive David Walsh.

Saying he was “surprised and dismayed” to see the “closing soon but staying put” sign in the Ponsonby NZ Post shop, Harris pointed out that the small office gave “great service to dozens of businesses” in the area, and hundreds of residents.

“It is misleading on your poster to claim that people will be able to obtain the same services at nearby post shops like that in Jervois Road,” Harris said.

“Will they be able to pay their bills and car registration there? Collect mail and parcels? Buy courier bags and send mail and parcels?

“And do you expect them to walk there?  It is not helpful to say this closure ‘might mean a few minutes extra drive’.

This assumed that all clients were using a car, not elderly or young who were on foot.

    Parking in busy streets
“And people are expected to try and find parking on other busy streets — Jervois Road, Karangahape Road, Wellesley Street.”

Harris said: “The Ponsonby post shop is a vital part of the network that binds the community together.

“To close it is like removing part of the community’s nervous system:  an ill-considered stab at the heart of a community which has always been vibrant, socially aware and productive.”

The NZ Post website proclaims that “we provide customers with the solutions and products to help them communicate and do business.”

However, said Harris, this planned closure for July 4 did not match those promises.

Harris also pointed out that NZ Post made a $16 million operating profit for the last six months of 2024.

The Ponsonby protest letter from a local community advocate to the NZ Post. Image: APR

“Congratulations. I’m pleased you are keeping NZ Post viable. But it shows there is a bit of ‘wriggle room’ to keep the Ponsonby store open.”

    Digital services use
In response to the call to reconsider the decision, a customer services officer replied on June 6 on behalf of chief executive Walsh, saying that the NZ Post Office needed to “ensure our physical locations are in the right places and operating efficiently” in an age where more people used digital services.

“In some areas, including Ponsonby, we’ve had more than one store serving the same neighbourhood. That’s not a sustainable way for us to operate, so we’ve had to make some changes.”

However, critics of the decision to close the Ponsonby store say the reasoning  was “not credible”, stressing that all claimed alternative postal stores are several kilometres away.

A year after chief executive Walsh was appointed in 2017, it was announced that NZ Post would close almost 80 local post offices across the country and replace some of them with franchises.

Harris, a children’s author with a strong association with the local community stretching back to the 1970s and a former editor of West End News in Freemans Bay, acknowledged that the Ponsonby  PO boxes lobby was being kept open, “but what about the ordinary rank-and-file residents and small business owners who value the other everyday services offered at the store?”

He said he had written to local MP, Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick and the Ponsonby Business Association seeking their support.

    Source: Government of India (4)

In a major boost to connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, regular services of the Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra commence on Saturday.

The Northern Railway has confirmed that the semi-high-speed trains will operate six days a week, significantly reducing travel time between the Kashmir Valley and the prominent pilgrimage hub in Katra.

This development marks a transformative step in the region’s transport infrastructure.

The new Vande Bharat service will cut travel time between Srinagar and Katra to just three hours—less than half of the current six to seven hours required by road.

Two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains—Train Nos. 26404/26403 and 26401/26402—will run on the newly inaugurated Srinagar–Katra–Srinagar route, with scheduled halts at Banihal.

These trains are specially designed to function in extreme winter conditions and are equipped with advanced heating systems, thermally insulated lavatories, heated windshields, and defrosting technology for improved driver visibility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off the inaugural run of these trains, following the successful completion of the 272-kilometer Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project—a long-awaited engineering feat that includes the iconic Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge.

Until now, train services in the region were limited to the Banihal–Baramulla section in the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu–Udhampur–Katra section in the Jammu region.

The extension of Vande Bharat services will not only provide a faster and more reliable mode of transportation for residents and tourists but is also expected to facilitate easier access for pilgrims visiting the revered Vaishno Devi shrine.

With seamless all-weather operations and premium onboard amenities, the Vande Bharat Express promises to enhance the travel experience and strengthen regional connectivity, linking North India more closely with the Valley.

  • Bakrid 2025: Muslims across India celebrate Eid al-Adha with prayers, sacrifice

    Source: Government of India (4)

Muslims across India are celebrating Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha, on Saturday with religious fervour and devotion.

The day began with special congregational prayers held at mosques and Eidgahs in cities and towns nationwide, as people gathered in large numbers to mark the sacred festival.

Eid al-Adha, or the “Festival of Sacrifice,” honours the unwavering faith and obedience of Prophet Abraham, who was willing to sacrifice his son as an act of submission to God.

In commemoration of this act of devotion, Muslims around the world perform ‘qurbani’, the ritual sacrifice of animals such as goats, sheep, or buffalo, and distribute the meat among family, friends, and those in need.

In India, the festival is being observed with great enthusiasm. In Delhi and Noida, large numbers of devotees offered Bakrid prayers early in the morning at major mosques. According to announcements from local mosque committees, Namaz timings varied slightly, in Noida, prayers were held around 7:00 a.m., while in Greater Noida, the timings ranged from 6:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. depending on the mosque.

In Kalyan, Thane district of Maharashtra, police presence was heightened near the historic Durgadi Fort due to parallel events planned by the Thackeray and Shinde factions, both claiming to continue the legacy of Dharmaveer Anand Dighe’s “Ghantanaad” movement, a 39-year-old tradition.

In other parts of India, the celebrations continued peacefully.

In Khurja, Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, large crowds assembled at the Eidgah for morning prayers.

In Bhagalpur (Bihar), thousands gathered at Tatarpur Masjid, CTS Ground, and Shahjangi Maidan to offer prayers. Similarly, in Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Eidgah Mosque saw significant attendance during the morning Eid al-Adha Namaz.

Bakrid celebrations are expected to continue throughout the day, with families coming together for festive meals, acts of charity, and community bonding.

Authorities across major cities have deployed additional security to ensure peaceful observances.

UGC Secretary-General visits US and UK
The Secretary-General of the University Grants Committee (UGC), Professor James Tang, led a delegation to visit the United States and the United Kingdom from May 25 (San Diego time) to June 6 (Birmingham time) as part of the effort to promote Hong Kong’s development into an international hub for post-secondary education.

Together with the delegation comprising all eight UGC-funded universities under the aegis of the Heads of Universities Committee’s Standing Committee on Internationalisation (HUCOMSCI), Professor Tang attended the NAFSA Annual Conference and Expo 2025 held in San Diego, the United States, where he spoke at a dedicated session on the strengths of Hong Kong’s higher education sector and the opportunities presented to students from around the world. With funding support from the UGC, the HUCOMSCI also set up a Hong Kong Pavilion to showcase Hong Kong’s internationalised and diversified higher education environment that welcomes academics and students from around the world to realise their aspirations.

“Over the years, with the substantial investment by the Government in higher education, the eight UGC-funded universities have continued to grow, with five ranked among the world’s top 100, six within Asia’s top 50, and four as the top most international universities in the world. Some 70 per cent of our research outputs are assessed as internationally excellent, while the most recent round of quality audits also reaffirms the quality of educational experience that our universities offer to students. Hong Kong is indeed the ideal destination for students to pursue their further studies and achieve greater success,” said Professor Tang at the session at the NAFSA Conference and Expo.

For the first time, the UGC also supported the Hong Kong Teaching Excellence Alliance and the HUCOMSCI to share with the international audience on how the UGC-funded universities have grasped the immense potential brought by artificial intelligence in enhancing students’ learning experiences. This has once again demonstrated Hong Kong’s leadership in quality education through investment and innovation.

Professor Tang then attended the International Higher Education Forum 2025 held on June 4 (Birmingham time) in Birmingham, the United Kingdom, to share the factors underpinning Hong Kong’s success as an international hub for post-secondary education. He stressed that academic freedom and institutional autonomy have been the cornerstones of Hong Kong’s success, while highlighting the diversified composition of Hong Kong’s academic staff. Hong Kong universities attract a strong pool of distinguished scholars with a rich repertoire of international experience, and indeed some 70 per cent of them come from outside Hong Kong.

In the 2024 Policy Address, the Government announced its support for establishing the “Study in Hong Kong” brand in order to attract more meritorious students to pursue their studies in Hong Kong. Through participation in international conferences and exhibitions, Hong Kong has continued to expand its network for student mobility and research collaboration. As of November 2024, the eight UGC-funded universities have jointly signed 2 660 student exchange agreements with universities from around the world, and engaged in over 6 800 active research collaborations with other institutions. At present, around one out of four students in UGC-funded universities are from outside Hong Kong. The Government will continue to support universities to strive for further internationalisation, thereby reinforcing their global reputation and scaling new heights.

During the visit, Professor Tang also met with senior management and prominent scholars from top-tier higher education institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom to exchange views on the latest developments in higher education. He also highlighted that Hong Kong’s outstanding universities have been a welcoming academic home for top scholars and talented students from around the world. As an international hub for higher education, Hong Kong’s doors are always open to all who want to realise their academic pursuits and explore the exciting opportunities offered by one of the world’s most dynamic cities.

    Source: US Department of Energy

In Case You Missed It— U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright traveled to Alaska earlier this week, where he joined U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin to advance President Trump’s bold agenda to unleash Alaska’s extraordinary resource potential. In Anchorage and on the North Slope, Secretary Wright met with state, local and tribal leaders as well as Alaskan energy workers, held bilateral meetings with foreign energy ministers to advance American energy projects like Alaska LNG, and participated in a keynote fireside chat at the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference.

“I was proud to join my colleagues, Doug Burgum and Lee Zeldin, in Alaska to help fulfill President Trump’s mission of unleashing Alaska to create a safe, prosperous, and opportunity-filled future,” said Secretary Wright. “Alaska has always been a big bold place, a big bold idea, full of big bold people. Unfortunately, the last administration especially and many before them sought to shut down Alaska in the name of climate nonsense. Those days are over. The Trump Administration is fully committed to restoring the rights and liberties of Alaskans, because when Alaska is unleashed, the entire country and world benefits.”

Click here to watch a highlight video of the trip and here to download and view photos from the visit.

    Roundtable in Anchorage

On Sunday, Secretaries Wright and Burgum and Administrator Zeldin joined Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy and Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) for a roundtable discussion in Anchorage with leaders from across Alaska’s resource development industry.

Town hall in Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska

The delegation then traveled to the capital of Alaska’s North Slope Borough, Utqiagvik, Alaska, for a town hall with the predominantly Alaska-Native community. The cabinet members heard from a variety of community leaders and residents from villages across the North Slope who described how President Trump’s agenda has positively impacted their future.

“The people of Kaktovik have been prisoners in our own ancestral homelands because the refuge was placed on top of us, restricting not just oil and gas development, but our movements. . . I’m so proud of our President because he made sure that our ancestral homelands weren’t going to be stolen… if the other guy would have won, there’s no doubt in my mind that our homeland would have been stolen and there’s nothing we could have done about it. But on day one, Trump had the heart and the wherewithal to be able to right this wrong and I’m extremely grateful for that. . . In the words of our commander in chief, President, Donald J. Trump, drill baby drill.” —Charles Lampe, resident of Kaktovik, Alaska, the only village in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR)

Tour of Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and meetings with industry leaders and international energy ministers in Prudhoe Bay

On Monday, the delegation visited Prudhoe Bay. They began at Pump Station 1 of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) they met with energy workers and delivered remarks. Upon arrival, Secretary Wright and his colleagues greeted international dignitaries from South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who joined for the day’s events.

“Today, oil is the largest source of energy on the planet and the fastest source of energy on the planet is natural gas. You have the big two right here: let’s double oil production, build the big, beautiful twin pipeline, and we will help energize the world, strengthen our country and strengthen our families.” Secretary Wright

The delegation also held a roundtable discussion with foreign energy representatives and U.S. industry executives, focused on international investment, LNG demand, and energy security partnerships. They also toured the Hilcorp Central Gas Facility and visited the Prudhoe Bay Discovery Well—highlighting Alaska’s legacy and future as a cornerstone of American energy production.

Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference and bilateral energy meetings

At the 2025 Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference, Secretaries Wright and Burgum and Administrator Zeldin joined Governor Dunleavy for a keynote discussion on the Administration’s progress and future plans for expanding resource development in Alaska.

“The main thing we’re looking to get is people that want to buy Alaskan natural gas, and I think we’ve seen tremendous interest in that.” –Secretary Wright at the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference

Secretary Wright also held bilateral meetings with the energy ministers from the Philippines and Taiwan.

Advancing President Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’

Throughout the visit, Secretary Wright and the delegation also discussed the enormous potential of President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, which includes provisions to mandate lease sales in the Cook Inlet and ANWR with an increased cost-share for Alaska, initiate a de-risking program for LNG projects, enact energy permitting reforms, and deliver higher wages and lower energy costs for American families.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Jones to Singapore for major energy conference

    Source: New Zealand Government

Resources Minister Shane Jones travels to Singapore tomorrow where he will speak to more than 400 executives about New Zealand’s oil and gas investment opportunities at the Asia Pacific Energy Capital Assembly.

“As a fierce champion for New Zealand’s oil and gas sector, the Asia Pacific Energy Capital Assembly conference on 9 and 10 June provides an unparalleled opportunity to tell investors from the Asia Pacific region that New Zealand is open for business and ready for investment,” Mr Jones says.

“Investment in our resources means jobs, opportunities and economic growth for regional New Zealand. The Coalition Government is working hard to make New Zealand an attractive proposition for investors, with changes such as the reversal of the oil and gas exploration ban and the passing of the Fast-track Approvals Act.

“Budget 2025 included a tagged contingency of $200 million over four years for business case-approved co‑investment in new gas fields. This investment sends a clear message to the international investment community that New Zealand is serious about oil and gas exploration to supply the gas we need to power our homes and businesses. The industry can also benefit from the Investment Boost policy, also announced in Budget 2025.

“Of particular interest to international investors will be upcoming changes to the Crown Minerals Act which align petroleum decommissioning requirements with international best practice. These requirements were previously seen as a handbrake on investment.

“I look forward to meeting oil and gas explorers and producers on the sidelines of the conference to discuss ways we can open new pathways for investment and opportunities for the oil and gas sector in New Zealand.”

Mr Jones returns to New Zealand on 12 June.
