    The Government of Canada is investing in strategic infrastructure projects to strengthen supply chains and make life cost less.

    Today, the President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Transport, the Honourable Anita Anand, announced up to $38 million for seven projects under the National Trade Corridors Fund. These investments will reduce capacity constraints and bottlenecks, making it easier for goods to move quickly.

    By enhancing infrastructure and improving efficiency, these investments will also support economic growth in the province of Quebec and in the regions along the St. Lawrence River. Projects include:

    • The Montreal Port Authority will increase export capacity for Canadian containerized grains
    • QSL International Ltée will develop an industrial-port zone in the cities of Sorel-Tracy and Saint-Joseph-de-Sorel thereby increasing trade volumes
    • The Quebec Port Authority is undertaking several key projects, including:
      • Expanding the terminal storage space at Pier 103
      • Relocating essential infrastructure for the electrical supply of the L’Anse au Foulon sector (Pier 104 and 105)
      • Enhancing the capacity and efficiency of the estuary rail yard
      • Finalizing an agreement for the development of a new dry bulk and cargo terminal behind pier 108 in the Anse au Foulon sector
    • The Saguenay Port Authority will establish a new storage area in the southwest sector of the Terminal

  • MIL-OSI USA: National Ocean Service helps reopen Florida ports after Hurricane Milton

    In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, the National Ocean Service’s Office of Coast Survey conducted hydrographic survey operations to help reopen Port Tampa Bay and SeaPort Manatee. As part of the response effort, Coast Survey deployed teams, including a contract surveyor, in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Brandon Bowman, Jacksonville District Commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “This enables our federal agencies to quickly respond, survey and reopen vital federal channels for navigation to aid in delivering supplies and minimize impact to the shipping industry.”
    Hurricane Milton made landfall as a Category 3 storm at approximately 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, near Siesta Key, just south of Sarasota, Florida. In the aftermath of the storm, the U.S. Coast Guard prioritized surveying SeaPort Manatee, to ensure safe passage for cargo ships carrying fuel to the region. 
    “Reopening the ports is critical,” said Dr. Nicolas Alvarado, NOAA Navigation Manager for Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “The faster we can get the necessary information to our partners so the port can be reopened, the better. The navigation response teams are heroes — they work around-the-clock to get the surveying done.”

    When hurricanes make landfall, they often bring stronger-than-normal ocean currents that can shift navigational channels and bring debris that can threaten the ability of vessels to navigate safely along the coast and into ports. NOAA’s navigation response teams use multibeam and sidescan sonar to detect any dangers in the water and speed the reopening of ports and waterways.
    Coast Survey strategically places navigation teams around the country. While 80% of their time is spent acquiring data for routine nautical chart updates, they also maintain a state of readiness for rapid response mobilization after emergencies.

    According to the American Association of Port Authorities “2024 Port and Maritime Industry Economic Impact Report,” U.S. ports’ contribution to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product totals almost $311 billion. Port Tampa Bay receives approximately 33 million tons of cargo a year, while more than 11 million tons of cargo move through SeaPort Manatee annually. Delays in shipping, even minor ones, can cost the economy millions each year.

    The National Trade Corridors Fund supports infrastructure projects in Canada. These projects include improvements at airports, ports, railways, transportation facilities, and access roads.

    The National Trade Corridors Fund supports infrastructure projects in Canada. These projects include improvements at airports, ports, railways, transportation facilities, and access roads. $4.1 billion has been committed to projects since 2017.

    The National Trade Corridors Fund supports projects that:

    • improve the flow of goods and people in Canada;
    • increase the flow of trade in and out of Canada;
    • help the transportation system to:
      • withstand the effects of climate change; and
      • better adapt to new technologies and innovation;
    • address the transportation needs of Arctic and northern communities.

    On October 18, 2024, the President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Transport, the Honourable Anita Anand, announced up to $38 million for seven projects under the National Trade Corridors Fund. By supporting our supply chains, the Government of Canada is ensuring that goods move faster and cheaper, making life cost less for Canadians.

    The funding recipients and project details are below.

    1. Montreal Port Authority – Increased export capacity for Canadian containerized grains
      The Government of Canada is investing $12,500,000 in this project to increase the Canest Terminal’s capacity by 20%, significantly improving its efficiency in handling goods. Additionally, the terminal will expand and optimize its operational space, substantially boosting container storage capacity. These upgrades will enable Canadian producers to expand exports to international markets by easing constraints and eliminating a major bottleneck in the supply chain.
    2. QSL International Ltée – Development of the port terminals in the cities of Sorel-Tracy and Saint-Joseph-de-Sorel
      The Government of Canada is investing $13,613,683 in this project to increase the fluidity of supply chains in the steel and agriculture sectors. By increasing the annual volume of import-export goods, it will support the local and regional economy while significantly reducing the number of days ships spend waiting offshore and the time required for unloading. Additionally, the initiative will mitigate environmental impacts by minimizing vessel diversions to other ports and decreasing the reliance on short-haul trucking.
    3. Quebec Port Authority – Increase the terminal storage space at Pier 103
      The Government of Canada is investing $1,198,185 in this project to reduce interruptions between storage areas, making operations more efficient. Warehouse 103 will serve as a backup storage area to help manage congestion in the logistics chain during busy times. Additionally, the project will help consolidate more goods at QSL terminals, especially in the agri-food, transportation, and construction industries.
    4. Quebec Port Authority – Relocation of a strategic and essential infrastructure for the electrical supply of the L’Anse au Foulon sector (Pier 104 and 105)
      The Government of Canada invested $1,638,500 in this project to increase storage capacity by approximately 3,000 m². This expansion has boosted the terminal’s overall storage capacity by about 15%, allowing it to handle new traffic while securing existing operations. Additionally, it reduces waiting times for ships unloading cargo at the terminal.
    5. Quebec Port Authority – Project to increase the capacity and efficiency of the estuary rail yard
      The Government of Canada invested $723,600 in this project to alleviate bottlenecks during peak times by creating additional space for railcars, expanding the Estuary Yard with about 380 linear meters of new track, reducing the time needed for snow clearing on the tracks, and improving unloading efficiency by minimizing operational delays.
    6. Quebec Port Authority – Agreement for the development of a new dry bulk and cargo terminal behind pier 108 in the Anse au Foulon sector
      The Government of Canada is investing $6,800,000 in this project to enhance intermodal connectivity through the construction of a new terminal that supports ship-to-truck and truck-to-ship logistics. It will also streamline operations by adding two new access roads to improve terminal and area accessibility. Additionally, the project will free up capacity at other deep-draft terminals, optimizing their use for handling and storage.
    7. Saguenay Port Authority – New storage area in the southwest sector of the Terminal
      The Government of Canada is investing $1,261,343 in this project to enhance trade flow by providing additional storage space in the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes maritime system, reducing long-distance transport needs. It will also support the logistics chain for bulk raw materials and promote short-distance maritime transport.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Council tenants urged to share views on how their rent should be spent

    The City of Edinburgh Council is asking tenants to give their feedback on how it invests in Council homes, neighbourhoods, and services.

    With just six weeks to go until this year’s consultation closes on Friday 29 November, tenants across the capital are being reminded to share their views on how they’d like their rent to be spent.

    In February this year, councillors agreed to increase rent by 7% every year, for five years, starting in April 2024. The longer-term strategy gives tenants more certainty about the rent they pay and helps the Council better plan spending to improve homes and services.

    The Council also introduced the Tenant Hardship Fund which offers financial assistance for tenants struggling to make rent payments. This year, the fund was increased to a maximum award of two fortnightly rent charges per tenant per year.

    Housing, Homelessness and Fair Work Convener Jane Meagher said:

    We’re determined to provide a better service to our tenants, improve their homes, and build more places for people to live because everyone deserves a suitable and affordable place to call home.

    Newport, Quebec – Quebec’s fish and seafood industry is facing increasing competition and the need to adapt to an ever changing market. Working together through the Quebec Fisheries Fund (QFF), the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec are helping the industry to innovate and reach its full potential.

    Today, the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, announced over $830,000 in QFF funding for five projects in the Gaspé Peninsula and the Lower St. Lawrence. The Government of Canada’s contribution to these projects is $583,515, while the Government of Quebec is contributing $250,077.

    Launched in 2019, the QFF supports innovation-driven projects in the areas of commercial fisheries, aquaculture, seafood harvesting and processing, and science partnerships. The funding announced today will help create opportunities and enhance the market value of high-quality, sustainable fish and seafood in Quebec.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Miller Tours Meeks Mountain Trails and Hosts Flag Ceremony Honoring Late Senator Bob Ashley

    Washington D.C. – Yesterday, Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) stopped by Meeks Mountain Trails to hear about economic updates and concerns regarding a proposal from American Electric Power (AEP). The Congresswoman later hosted a flag presentation for the family of late West Virginia Senator Bob Ashley. 

    Congresswoman Miller met with Meeks Mountain Trails board members to tour the trails, discuss how the trail system project has been impacting the state’s economy, and discuss AEP’s plans to cut through the trails to install power lines.   
     
    “The Meeks Mountain Trails system has done a wonderful job at providing economic growth and promoting healthy lifestyles by building and sustaining more than 30 miles of trails for the Hurricane community. Volunteers, sustainers, and donors continue to help make this project possible and I was glad to observe some of the trails for a first-hand experience. I know there are concerns with AEP’s plans to install power lines which would disrupt the trails, but my staff and I are in communication with the electric energy company and committed to finding the best solution possible for the community,” said Congresswoman Miller.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Free SUNY and CUNY Applications Starting October 21

    Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the State University of New York, the City University of New York and over 50 private colleges and universities throughout New York State have again come together to offer free application opportunities for high school seniors during New York State College Application Month.

    “Ensuring that every student has the opportunity to pursue higher education is a top priority for New York State,” Governor Hochul said. “College Application Month isn’t only about waiving fees — it’s about breaking down financial barriers and opening doors to future opportunities. We’re empowering students across the state to take the first step toward achieving their educational and career goals while removing the financial obstacles that may deter students from pursuing higher education.”

    The State University of New York (SUNY) will waive up to five application fees per student across its 64 colleges and universities from Oct. 21 through Nov. 3. The City University of New York (CUNY) is waiving application fees across all 25 campuses for high school seniors attending New York City public schools from Oct. 21 to Nov. 15 and from Nov. 4 to Nov. 15 for all New York State residents applying as a college freshman. CUNY further guarantees admission to all seven of its community colleges for all NYC Public Schools graduates, while private institutions across the state are offering fee waivers that vary by campus.     Last week, Governor Hochul announced that following the increase in income thresholds secured in the FY25 Enacted Budget, more than 40,000 newly eligible New York State students have already submitted Tuition Assistance Program applications for the 2024-25 academic year.     To assist students with their academic goals, the NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) and academic partners will offer over 65 virtual and in-person events.     New York State’s College Application Month (CAM) is part of the national American College Application Campaign, which began as a pilot at a single high school in North Carolina in 2005 and has since expanded to all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Coordinated by HESC in partnership with the NYS Education Department, SUNY, CUNY, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, the Association of Proprietary Colleges, the NYC Department of Education and community organizations. CAM encourages high school seniors — especially those from low-income families, first-generation students, and those who may not otherwise apply — to submit college applications early. To date, the national campaign, sponsored by ACT’s Center for Equity in Learning, has helped nearly 4.7 million students submit over 8.7 million applications.

    • Madagascar’s growth is expected to remain stable at 4.2 percent in 2024, before accelerating to 4.6 percent in 2025.
    • Ambitious policy reforms are needed to raise more fiscal revenue and make space for higher public investment and social expenditures, while preserving macroeconomic stability and limiting fiscal risks.
    • Strengthening governance and accelerating reforms to bolster resilience to climate shocks and attract climate finance are key to deliver higher and more inclusive growth in the medium term.

    Washington, DC: An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission led by Frederic Lambert conducted discussions for the 2024 Article IV consultation and first reviews of the arrangements supported by the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) during September 30-October 11 in Antananarivo.

    At the conclusion of the mission, Mr. Lambert issued the following statement:

    “Madagascar’s economy is stabilizing but facing persistent inflation. After 4.2 percent growth in 2023, economic activity remained steady in early 2024 despite a good rice harvest and a rebound in graphite mining. Inflation rose to 7.8 percent in August 2024, driven by energy and food prices. Poor road infrastructure and unreliable electricity continue to increase transport and production costs.

    “Growth is projected to remain at 4.2 percent in 2024, and to accelerate to 4.6 percent in 2025. Average annual inflation is expected to decline to 7.2 percent in 2025, before gradually converging to 6 percent over the medium term. The current account deficit would stabilize under 5 percent of GDP.

    “The primary fiscal deficit is expected to reach 2.7 percent of GDP in 2024, assuming no oil customs tax arrears. Despite the conclusion of two agreements in 2022 and 2023, some fuel distributors are withholding the payment of oil customs duties to force a settlement of their claims vis-à-vis the government, part of which are related to JIRAMA’s fuel purchases. The absence of settlement with fuel distributors would require expenditure cuts to prevent an increase in the fiscal deficit.

    “The outlook faces downside risks from regional conflicts, such as those in Gaza and Israel, and the ongoing war in Ukraine, which could disrupt trade, finance, and commodity prices. Domestically, Madagascar’s water and electricity shortages, deteriorating infrastructure, and governance issues could fuel popular discontent. Climate shocks also threaten food price stability and security. In contrast, implementing the General State Policy (PGE) reforms could enhance productivity and growth.

    “Increasing tax revenues to finance investment and social spending would help boost private sector-led and inclusive growth. The 2025 budget should include a combination of tax policy and administrative measures, including a reduction in tax expenditures by MGA 280 billion, to support the government’s revenue objectives. Over the medium-term, a gradual removal of costly import tax and VAT exemptions should be considered as well as other reforms to expand the tax base. A comprehensive excise tax reform and a revision of personal income taxation towards more progressivity should be accompanied by reforms of the tax and customs administrations, including to improve tax audit transparency and the appeal process and expedite VAT credit refunds.

    “Structural reforms are key to limiting fiscal risks. Transfers to JIRAMA should be budgeted and gradually reduced. The company’s recovery plan, developed with World Bank’s technical assistance, needs to be swiftly implemented with strong backing from the executive branch. Implementing an automatic fuel price adjustment mechanism is crucial to manage fiscal risks by adjusting pump prices monthly to reflect changes in market prices within a band of +/-200 ariary per liter. Negotiations with fuel distributors should resume to settle cross-liabilities within the 2024 budget, ensuring compliance with fiscal and para-fiscal obligations and settling government liabilities.

    “While improving the selection, prioritization, and management of public investment projects is critical to enhance spending efficiency, reinforcing public financial management processes should improve budget execution and traceability. The approval of the budget law by Parliament should be sufficient to start the execution of spending or investment projects, without further authorization by the Council of Ministers or the Commitment Monitoring Bureau (BSE).

    “Improving governance is key to delivering higher and more inclusive growth. The lack of transparency and predictability, and the suspicion of state capture by private interests are undermining private sector confidence and public trust in institutions, discouraging investment and development initiatives. Priorities include notably ensuring legal stability, avoiding retroactive regulations, enforcing existing laws, providing effective protection of property rights and enforcement of contracts, ensuring a level-playing field, and creating effective grievance redress mechanisms. The preparation of a new anticorruption strategy that will cover 2025-2030 is an opportunity to accelerate momentum in this field and the IMF will support the authorities’ efforts with a Governance Diagnostic Assessment to be finalized in 2025.

    “The central bank should stand ready to raise its policy rates to keep inflation on a downward path. It should continue to manage liquidity through open market operations and communicate more predictably and transparently about monetary policy and liquidity management to enhance credibility and accountability. Foreign exchange interventions should be limited to smoothing excess volatility and building external buffers, without resisting underlying market forces. Further development of the interbank market and strengthening of the interest rate channel of monetary policy will support the functioning of the new monetary policy operational framework. Safeguarding financial stability is crucial for the development of private credit markets.

    “To support resilience, stronger social safety nets are essential. Establishing food banks can reduce food insecurity and support local food production. Expanding the single social registry with clear eligibility criteria will improve social assistance targeting. More resources are needed for education and health, with transparent and merit-based recruitment. Digitalization can boost financial inclusion and cash transfer programs.

    “Building climate resilience should be a government priority. With support from the Resilience and Sustainability Facility and the World Bank Group-IMF Enhanced Cooperation Framework for Climate Action, Madagascar should develop a national climate finance strategy to attract climate related investments.

    “The IMF team thanks the Malagasy authorities and other counterparts for candid and productive discussions. The discussions on the first reviews of the ECF and RSF arrangements will continue virtually in the coming weeks.”

The First Amendment is sacred, and I encourage students to exercise their right to freedom of speech and assembly. However, protests on college campuses should remain peaceful and lawful. Those who abuse their privilege and disregard the law should not benefit from the tax benefits we have in place to financially help folks further their education.”

    Background
    This legislation disqualifies individuals who are convicted of certain criminal offenses from receiving education related tax benefits including the American Opportunity Tax Credit, the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit, and the deduction on student loan interest. 

    Specifically, if an individual is convicted of unlawful assembly, rioting, trespassing, vandalism, battery, or battery on a law enforcement officer while conducting a protest at an institute of higher education, they will be disqualified from receiving these tax benefits.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Peruvian National Sentenced in Transnational Scheme to Defraud Spanish-Speaking United States Consumers

    A Peruvian national was sentenced yesterday to 98 months in prison and to pay nearly $700,000 in restitution to his more than 1,100 victims for his role overseeing a transnational fraud conspiracy that targeted recent immigrants to the United States.

    According to court documents, Jose Alejandro Zuñiga Cano, 40, of Lima, was the operator of a Peruvian call center that defrauded and extorted Spanish-speaking United States residents by falsely threatening them with arrest, court proceedings and immigration consequences. Zuñiga was extradited from Peru in March to face charges related to the scheme and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud in July.

    In pleading guilty, Zuñiga admitted that he owned and operated a call center in Lima, that placed unsolicited calls to Spanish-speaking consumers in the United States and falsely claimed that they had won or qualified for free products, including computer tablets and English language courses. On later calls, Zuñiga and his co-conspirators falsely claimed that victims were contractually obligated to pay large sums to receive the products. Zuñiga and his co-conspirators impersonated lawyers, court officials, police officers and representatives of a supposed “minor crimes court” to intimidate victims and force them to send payments. Zuñiga and his co-conspirators queried potential victims about their country of origin and threatened victims with court proceedings, arrest and immigration consequences if they did not pay.

    Many victims who made payments following these lies and threats were frequently re-victimized by Zuñiga and his co-conspirators with a related restitution scheme. The defendant and his co-conspirators placed additional calls to victims who had already paid and, while posing as lawyers for a U.S. court, falsely represented that victims were entitled to restitution payments and would receive their money back if they paid additional fees. In reality, there was no lawyer, no restitution order and no funds returned to the victims who made those additional payments. Instead, Zuñiga kept those additional victim payments for himself.

    “The Justice Department’s Consumer Protection Branch is dedicated to protecting vulnerable U.S. consumers from fraudsters no matter where those fraudsters reside,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian M. Boynton, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “Today’s sentence demonstrates that individuals who defraud our immigrant communities will be held accountable in U.S. courts. We will continue to work with our partners to ensure that individuals who impersonate government and court officials are brough to justice.”

    “The long arm of the American justice system has no limits when it comes to reaching fraudsters who prey on our nation’s most vulnerable populations, to include the elderly and recent immigrants,” said U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida. “We will not allow transnational criminals to use fear tactics and intimidation to steal money from the public we serve. Individuals who defraud American consumers will be brought to justice, no matter where they are located.”

    “Today’s sentencing of Jose Alejandro Zuñiga Cano is proof of the dedication between the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Justice Department’s Consumer Protection Branch and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to stop at nothing to bring those suspects who victimize our citizens to justice,” said Inspector in Charge Juan A. Vargas of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) Miami Division.

    With today’s sentencing in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, 12 defendants have now been convicted and sentenced in connection with a $15 million transnational fraud scheme that defrauded and threatened Spanish-speaking U.S. consumers, claiming they would suffer legal consequences if they did not pay for English-language learning products they never requested. Collectively, the scheme was responsible for defrauding more than 30,000 Spanish-speaking residents of the United States. Many of the victims were recent immigrants who had merely expressed interest in learning English.

    The 12 defendants include eight Peruvian call center owner-operators and four distribution center owner-operators who processed payments, distributed products and facilitated the fraud in the United States. Many of the defendants shared strategies on how to defraud Spanish-speaking residents of the United States.

    Zuñiga is the eighth defendant to be extradited from Peru and plead guilty in federal court to fraud charges related to Peruvian call centers involved in the English language learning scam. In 2021 and 2022, U.S. District Judge Robert N. Scola, Jr., sentenced Henrry Milla, Carlos Espinoza, Jerson Renteria, Fernan Huerta, Omar Cuzcano, Evelyng Milla and Josmell Espinoza to sentences ranging from 88 months to 110 months in prison.

    USPIS and the Civil Division’s Consumer Protection Branch investigated the case.

    Senior Trial Attorney and Transnational Criminal Litigation Coordinator Phil Toomajian and Trial Attorney Carolyn Rice of the Civil Division’s Consumer Protection Branch are prosecuting the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Annika Miranda for the Southern District of Florida is handling asset forfeiture. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service, U.S. Marshals Service, Peruvian National Prosecutor General’s Office and Peruvian National Police provided critical assistance.

    The Dutchess County DA’s Office secured the $3,023,688 from United States Department of Justice (DOJ) grant programs with the assistance of Congressman Ryan. The funding will be broken down to support the three following programs:

    • $1,000,000 from the DOJ’s Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Program will fund the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office’s collaborative initiative to address, mitigate, and prevent hate crime and increase victim reporting. This project focuses on the education on and prevention of hate crime through community outreach and partnerships, crime analytics and data collection, and targeted resource distribution to improve hate crime reporting. The District Attorney’s Office will create two new positions-   a Hate Crimes Analyst and an Assistant District Attorney – to aid in the education, prevention, and investigation of bias-related crimes, including those committed online.  Wappinger Central School District Superintendent, Dr. Dwight Bonk, said “I am very grateful to District Attorney Parisi and his office for his commitment to provide a safe school environment for all students. As we have zero tolerance for acts of violence, discrimination, and hate speech within our District, this grant will assist and serve as a catalyst to provide much needed programs and supports that foster a culture of respect for one another. I look forward to our continued partnership and collaboration as we all work together as a community to address issues such as these.”
    • $500,000 from the DOJ’s Enhancing Investigation and Prosecution of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking (EIP) Initiative will help expand and improve the Dutchess County DA’s capacity to effectively investigate and/or prosecute domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, and in so doing, support victim safety and autonomy, hold offenders accountable, and promote agency trust within the community. The EIP project by the Office of the Dutchess County District Attorney will partner with Family Services to provide supportive services to survivors. Funding will help in hiring a Senior Assistant District Attorney to prosecute domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking cases.  Leah Feldman, Chief Executive Officer for Family Services “We are proud to partner with the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office, law enforcement, and community leaders on this important initiative. Sexual violence and dating violence are pressing issues in our community, particularly on our college campuses. This funding will not only contribute to enhancing the investigation and prosecution of these crimes but also provide important trauma-informed education that empowers survivors and dispels harmful myths. Together, we are committed to ensuring justice for survivors and creating a safer, more supportive Dutchess County.”
    • $1,523,688 to bolster the capacity of DNA testing of evidence. This will allow for post-conviction evidence testing as well, ensuring that the perpetrator of a crime is correctly brought to justice. The funding will expand Dutchess County’s Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) by creating positions of Unit Chief, Assistant District Attorney and a full-time Investigator. The funding will help the CIU efficiently conduct thorough case reviews and investigations of violent felony convictions where a credible claim of actual innocence has been made; utilize DNA testing and analysis to provide conclusive evidence of innocence; and insights gleaned from CIU investigations will be applied to active prosecutions to help mitigate the risk of future wrongful convictions. This will ensure justice is finally and correctly served for the people of Dutchess County communities.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Nine imprisoned for operating illegal Lincolnshire waste site

    Nine people have been sentenced for the operation of an illegal waste site in rural Lincolnshire, following an investigation by the Environment Agency.

    The defendants were sentenced today (Friday 18 October) at Nottingham Crown Court to a collective 11 years of imprisonment, including three family members who controlled the illegal waste site at Long Bennington near Newark.

    The investigation, named Operation Lord, saw Environment Agency officers spend months building a picture of evidence of the illegal waste site on Fen Lane, Long Bennington.

    The findings of the investigation led to 12 people and one company being charged, of which 10 pleaded guilty. Following an eight-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court which concluded on 28 June 2024, the remaining three defendants were found guilty.

    Environment Agency officers conducted a raid on the site in April 2020 with Lincolnshire Police. Intelligence revealed lorry-loads of shredded waste were regularly being accepted onto the site the size of a football pitch.

    Waste was burned daily and buried. This activity intensified during the first Coronavirus lockdown in March 2020, and so action was taken to bring it to a halt.

    Environment Agency officers also seized an excavator and a lorry which were actively depositing more waste at the site when officers arrived. Two arrests were made.

    Prosecution brought against those involved

    The prosecution was brought against individuals that ran the illegal waste site; burned the waste; drove waste to the site and the landowners. Two waste brokers were also prosecuted.

    The Canner family trio of father Paul (53), mother Judith (55) of Main Road, Bilstone, Nuneaton, and son Joshua (29) of Laburnum Avenue, Newbold Verdon, ran the illegal waste site.

    Paul Canner was sentenced today to 26 months in prison, while Judith and Joshua were each sentenced to 16 months. Seven of the nine defendants were sentenced to immediate imprisonment.

    Sentencing the defendants, His Honour Judge Coupland found that the:

    • offending was deliberate for all nine defendants and the harm caused was of the highest level.
    • the illegal activity was deliberately concealed physically and with falsified paperwork.
    • the illegal waste site was close to nearby residents, putting them at harm from toxic fumes.
    • the repeated nature of the offences over a long period of time, and the financial gain obtained by the operation aggravated the offences for all defendants.

    His Honour Judge Coupland said that ‘the custody threshold had been crossed in all cases’.

    Site inflicted ‘misery on the local community’

    Leigh Edlin, Area Director for Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, said:

    This was a serious illegal waste site which was highly organised and involved multiple offenders.

    Those involved sought to profit from Covid restrictions at the cost of the environment and by inflicting misery on the local community. The site and its operators had a major impact on legitimate businesses and our regulatory work.

    Our enforcement teams will continue to tackle serious illegal waste crime by working with partners such as Lincolnshire Police, fire services and councils, as we did in this case to hold those responsible to account.

He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to 26 months’ immediate imprisonment.
    • Judith Canner, aged 55 of Main Road, Bilstone, Nuneaton, pleaded guilty to knowingly causing the deposit of waste at the site between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020. She was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to 16 months’ immediate imprisonment.
    • Joshua Canner, aged 29 of Laburnum Avenue, Newbold Verdon, pleaded guilty to knowingly causing the deposit of waste at the site between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020. He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to 16 months’ immediate imprisonment.
    • Sonial Surpal, aged 52 of Round House Road, Coventry, pleaded guilty to depositing waste at the site between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020. He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to 13 months’ immediate imprisonment.
    • Luke Woodward, aged 37 of Willow Road, Nuneaton, pleaded guilty to depositing waste at the site between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020. He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to 11 months’ immediate imprisonment.
    • Marcus Chapman, aged 39 of Egmanton Drive, Mansfield, pleaded guilty to disposing of the waste at the site between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020. He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to 12 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. He has been ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work.
    • Peter Wainwright, aged 32 of Dexter Lane, Hurley, Atherstone, Warwickshire pleaded guilty to disposing of waste at the site between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020. He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to 16 months’ immediate imprisonment.
    • Nathan Jones, aged 43 of Carnation Road, Shirebrook, Mansfield, pleaded guilty to disposing of waste at the site between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020. He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to 16 months’ immediate imprisonment.
    • Daniel Lippitt, aged 55 of Lubbersthorpe Road, Leicester, pleaded guilty to depositing waste at the site between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020. He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to 9 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. He has been ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work.

    The following defendants, who were the landowners, will be sentenced on 16 December 2024 at Nottingham Crown Court:

    • James Baggaley, aged 38 of Back Lane, Foston, pleaded not guilty but was found guilty in June 2024 after a trial of 1) knowingly permitting the deposit of waste at the site between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020, and 2) knowingly permitting the operation of the illegal waste site between 1 October and 14 April 2022.
    • Marc Greenfield, aged 46 of Fosse Road, Brough, pleaded guilty to knowingly permitting the operation of the illegal waste site between 1 October 2019 and 14 April 2022.

    Proceeds of crime proceedings have commenced against all 13 defendants and the following two defendants will be sentenced at the outcome of those proceedings:

    • Robert Malone, aged 41 of Ribble Prospect, Clitheroe, the sole director of NWR 2004 Limited, pleaded not guilty but was found guilty in June 2024 after a trial of failing to comply with the waste duty of care between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020.
    • Fletcher Plant Limited pleaded not guilty but was found guilty in June 2024 after a trial of failing to comply with the waste duty of care between 1 October 2019 and 1 May 2020.

    Montreal (Quebec), October 18th, 2024 — The renovation and expansion of an old industrial building to create the Battat Art Center, the CAB, will reduce the ecological footprint of the building and support art and culture. The project is made possible by a $10.2 million investment from the federal government.

    Announced by the Honorable Mélanie Joly, this project, located on Port-Royal Street in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough, will offer a variety of spaces for creation and performance, supporting artists and promoting public appreciation of the arts.

    A thriving economy needs strategic investments in green infrastructure to build a sustainable future for Canadians, with access to good jobs, while limiting impacts on the local environment.

    The funding for this artistic building will be used to preserve the exterior envelope, as well as its existing architectural and structural components made of wood, masonry, and steel. The Center has prioritized the enhancement of the built heritage rather than starting from scratch. A new structure, primarily made of large timber from Quebec, will be erected to promote this craftsmanship and structural system. Additionally, the expansion will be built following zero-carbon building design standards and will increase the existing space from two to four floors, allowing for the installation of artist studios and exhibition rooms. This initiative supports the values of sustainable development by integrating ecological and economic strategies while providing quality spaces for the artistic community.

    The GICB program aims to improve the places Canadians work, learn, play, live and come together by cutting pollution, reducing costs, and supporting thousands of good jobs.

    Through green and other upgrades to existing public community buildings and new builds in underserved communities, the GICB program helps ensure community facilities are inclusive, accessible, and have a long service life, while also helping Canada move towards its net-zero objectives by 2050.

    Furthermore, the Battat Art Center will also receive a maximum financial support of one million dollars from the Government of Quebec, through the Programme d’innovation en construction bois (PICB).

    About the Battat Art Center (CAB)

    The CAB is a nonprofit multidisciplinary creation and dissemination space that gives artists the freedom to experiment without external constraints or expectations. The center stands out from the expected contemporary art trajectory by prioritizing the artist and their process over the final product.

    Housed in a former stone masonry building located in the heart of Ahuntsic-Cartierville in Montreal, the CAB is one of the first significant artistic pillars in the community. The project aims to symbolize cultural renewal by offering artist studios, exhibition and performance spaces, places for exchange, green areas, and a café. It also provides a unique artistic and community program for this neighborhood, which is undergoing an identity transformation. By valuing collaboration among creators and supporting access to art, the CAB aims to establish an ideal environment for creation—an inclusive and participatory space for both artists and the community.

This CED support has enabled the business to cover external professional fees and to acquire equipment to ensure its growth by establishing a laboratory and research and development office in Laval focusing on animal health.

    Founded in 2020, EVAH Corp., a biotechnology business that first began operating in Saint-Hyacinthe, works in the animal health sector. The business is positioning itself in an international market where the research and development of alternatives to traditional antibiotics is necessary. Its team of managers and scientists are focusing on the acquisition and development of technologies and collaborating with research and development experts to bring its solutions to the pre-commercialization stage.

    An initial contribution of $500,000 has made it possible to cover external professional fees related to the certifications needed for technologies and scientific conferences, as well as professional fees related to the protection of intellectual property. The second contribution, in the amount of $300,000, has enabled EVAH Corp. to acquire and install laboratory and research equipment, including two collaborative robots, a biosafety cabinet, a spectrophotometer, a gel apparatus, as well as a centrifuge and ultracentrifuge.

    Chelmsford Science Festival event aims to help us make sense of rapid changes

    Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the world we live in, and a talk at the Chelmsford Science Festival is aimed at helping people make sense of these rapid changes, and how they will affect them.

    During the talk at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) on Thursday, 24 October, ARU expert Dr Chris Callaghan will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of a new world driven by AI, and how governments, financial markets and society will need to adapt.

    In the interactive talk he will highlight some of his unique findings from work in leading journals, especially his recent focus on AI and technological change and its profound societal impacts. 

    Dr Callaghan will draw on research published in European Management Review, where it is argued that in the face of the climate emergency and other existential threats, academic fields need to work together more closely.

    He will discuss how AI allows different areas of academia such as biology, physics and economics, which previously had operated in silos, to complement each other and work together to create rapid changes in the way we live and work.

    Dr Callaghan, Senior Lecturer in the School of Management at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), said:

    “AI is new to us and there have been dire warnings about how it will replace jobs or create extreme unwanted consequences like overtaking human intelligence and causing an existential threat to our existence. 

    “The truth is AI has potential to be all-encompassing, cutting across all scientific disciplines and completely changing how we live. As a result, there will be some negatives but also lots of positives, and just like the way we live today, there will be winners and losers.

    “No one area of science ‘owns’ AI and that is potentially very exciting because experts from all different areas of science will be able to collaborate more freely, potentially driving significant, rapid improvements to how we live.

    “These changes are happening extremely fast and it can be overwhelming for people. This talk will explain what is happening, and how we can navigate the rapid changes coming our way.

    “We need to be proactive and ensure our voices are heard, so that we can have some input into a future that is unfolding right now.”

    Specialists from the city economy complex have begun rehabilitating the Yaroslavl pond in the north-east of the capital. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing and Public Utilities and Improvement Petr Biryukov.

    “Currently, the reservoir, located inside the existing residential development on Veshnikh Vod Street, is in an unsatisfactory condition: a layer of silt deposits has accumulated at the bottom, the water area is abundantly overgrown with aquatic vegetation, and the destruction of the coastal strip is observed. In connection with this, a decision was made to carry out a comprehensive rehabilitation of the pond, we plan to complete the work by the end of this year,” said Petr Biryukov.

    The specialists will extract more than 900 cubic meters of silt deposits, which will allow achieving an optimal temperature balance and preventing the reservoir from overgrowing in the warm season. In addition, the structure of the coastal strip with a total length of more than 180 meters will be repaired; it will remain the same type (slope) and will be reinforced with stone.

    At the final stage, two bioplateau zones with a total area of over 432 square meters will be organized, in which aquatic plants of different species will be planted.

    Specialists regularly conduct surveys of the capital’s water bodies, and if problems are identified, a decision is made on rehabilitation. The list of water bodies is compiled annually taking into account the wishes of Muscovites. In total, over 20 ponds are planned to be renovated in Moscow this year.

    In Liverpool, markets are more than just places to shop. They have always been at the heart of our communities, bringing people together and helping to forge bonds between shoppers and traders.

    And this year has proved this again and again. The successes of the new Stanley Park Market – where the bakers have been selling out almost before they can put their stock on their stall! – and the seasonal St George’s Hall markets show that there is a real appetite for this experience in Liverpool and that if you get the offer right, they work.

    But why are markets so special? Why do they still flourish in so many different guises?

    For us, it’s quite simple: connection. There is a social aspect to visiting a market that you don’t always get in the same way from some big high-street stores. Shoppers get to know the traders, the traders get to know the shoppers. It builds trust and strengthens the fabric of our communities, enriching our neighbourhoods.

    To say markets have a long history in Liverpool is a understatement. It is believed that there have been meat and fish markets in what is now the city centre since the 13th century.     Manchester City Council has named Tom Stannard as its new permanent Chief Executive to lead the delivery of the city’s strategy for the decade ahead. 

    He will become only the third Chief Executive to take the reins in more than a quarter of a century in a city which prides itself on stability. Tom was selected following a rigorous recruitment process.  

    He has been Chief Executive of neighbouring Salford City Council for the past four years, overseeing achievements including the transformative regeneration of Salford, an ambitious council housebuilding programme and high-performing children’s services. He has more than 27 years of experience in local government including senior posts in Oldham, Wakefield, Blackburn with Darwen and London boroughs.  

    Tom is nationally recognised as a leading voice in local government, public service reform and delivering inclusive growth and currently holds the lead CEO brief for Greater Manchester in the economy, business and international portfolio.  

    He is a Chartered Surveyor, Chair of the UK Institute of Economic Development, Commissioner for the UK Living Wage Foundation and National Spokesman for Health and Social Care for SOLACE (The Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers.)  

    Tom joins one of the best performing councils in the country at a crucial time as Manchester presses ahead with its ambition to be world-class city with top class services.     Today, there are about 370 enterprises in Moscow engaged in the production of computers, optics and electronics. Thanks to the active support of the city, they develop and bring innovative products to market, and also increase the range and volume of production. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry Maxim Liksutov.

    “From January to August 2024, the capital saw a 96 percent increase in the production of computers, electronic and optical products. Shipments to customers increased by almost 40 percent and exceeded 386 billion rubles. Such results were achieved thanks to the support that the city provides to industrialists on behalf of Sergei Sobyanin. Today, companies have access to over 20 systemic tools, in particular, they can localize production in the territory of the special economic zone “Technopolis Moscow”, as well as obtain the status of a resident of the SEZ, attract a preferential investment loan or rent land for one ruble to implement a large-scale investment project,” said Maxim Liksutov.

    For example, last year thanks to Moscow Fund for Support of Industry and Entrepreneurship The capital’s optical equipment manufacturer was able to attract almost three billion rubles under the preferential investment lending program. The enterprise has the status of a resident of the special economic zone “Technopolis Moscow”. The funds received were used to purchase new equipment for the production of high-speed optical transceivers and create a test bench. The term of financial support is three years.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Three UConn Business Students/Alums Helped Shape Network News, Entertainment Industry This Year

    Business student Emily Laput ’26 (CLAS) created her own marketing and consulting firm when she was in high school. That impressed interviewers at NBC Universal in New York City, and helped her capture a coveted summer internship.

    Across the city, recent alum Peter Spinelli ’24 (BUS, CLAS), is working as a production intern at ABC News. He is passionate about increasing the percentage of Gen Z adults who watch TV news.

    And alumna Emilia Kwasniak ’24 (BUS) —a self-described “theater kid” who loved the Nickelodeon show “Victorious” when growing up—is now a long-term temporary employee at the first TV channel created exclusively for kids.

    Students Eager to Apply Business Knowledge in Creative Industries

    Professor Sami Ghaddar, of the Boucher Management & Entrepreneurship Department in the School of Business, says the news and entertainment industries have become increasingly attractive to UConn students because they offer a compelling combination of creativity, adaptability, and strategic opportunity.

    “The diversity of work within these industries is undoubtedly a key factor. The ability to work across various mediums and platforms allows our students to apply their business skills in dynamic and innovative ways,’’ he says. “Moreover, the versatility of a business degree is evident in how students can navigate these rapidly changing fields, leveraging their entrepreneurial mindset to succeed in new and exciting ways.’’

    Kelly Kennedy, Director of Transformative Learning at the School of Business, agreed. She’s meeting more business students who are looking for opportunities beyond traditional employment paths, reflecting a larger generational shift toward more personally meaningful work.

    Emily Laput Applied for 200 Summer Jobs

    This summer, Laput, an honors student majoring in marketing and communications, worked as a corporate communications intern at NBC Universal in New York City. But getting a dream summer internship wasn’t an easy task.

    “Professor Kennedy forced me to think about what I want to do and where I want to be. I had worked at an energy nonprofit recently and wasn’t interested in the industry, but entertainment and media offered something new every day,’’ she says. “I applied for more than 200 summer positions, including 20 at NBC Universal, all with customized applications.’’

    She got five first-round interviews at NBC Universal, two second-round interviews, and then the offer.

    Emily Laput ’26 helped promoted a new Minions movie this year (contributed photo).

    “I think what helped me stand out is that in high school I created my own marketing and consultancy firm, and I did fundraising and event planning,’’ says Laput. “Creating my own opportunities really gave me a great start. I’m a junior and I enjoy forging my own opportunities and finding a path to get ahead.’’

    One of her favorite summer tasks was helping promote a new Minions movie, “Despicable Me 4.” Prior to the movie’s release on July 3, she led the creation of a “Day in the Life of a Minion” reel. A native of Beacon Falls, Laput had been the mascot at her high school, which gave her an edge in starting the project. She created an Instagram reel that showed the Minion at the Kelly Clarkson Show, watching a movie trailer, and even buying bananas at the company commissary.

    “This job brings me so much joy, it’s so cool,’’ she said over the summer. “Who else walks into work with the Today Show filming when you enter your office? I was on the Today Show elevator and [anchor] Hoda Kotb said hello to me. That made my day, my whole summer, actually.’’

    In addition, the network partnered with America’s VetDogs to socialize a puppy named Atlas, who will soon be placed with a veteran. Laput handled Atlas’ Instagram posts. She also worked on employee engagement projects and edited the company newsletters. She says the variety of work made the days interesting.

    “When I’d walk into work every day, I’d think, ‘This job was made for me!,’” she says. Originally leaning toward event planning, she now wants to work in internal communications and employee engagement.

    Laput says she’d advise other interns not to wait around for an assignment, but instead suggest projects that interest them.

    “If you have an idea, there’s no risk in throwing it out there. If it isn’t possible, move on,’’ she says. “I think what makes me different is that I ask for work, express interest in things, like video editing, and come up with ideas. If you express your career goals clearly, it lets others know what projects you would enjoy working on, and that’s more exciting.’’

    Peter Spinelli Believes It’s Important to Be Informed 

    Only 11% of Gen Z adults routinely watch the news on television. When Spinelli discovered that fact, as part of a research project for his Content Entrepreneurship class at UConn, he was disappointed.

    “Now that I’m of voting age, I think it is important to know what’s going on in your state and in your country. I want to make sure people are watching,’’ Spinelli says. He believes that 24-hour news streaming and social media can help leverage engagement.

    He has spent the last few months working as a production intern at ABC News in New York. His team recruits on-air talent for the network and some of its affiliates. Spinelli has traveled to journalism conferences in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Austin, Texas, to connect young journalists to the company.

    “I feel lucky to be traveling with the team. I enjoy the recruiting aspect,’’ he says. “I could see myself being with this team permanently one day. But before I do, I want to gain experience in production.’’

    Spinelli has also vetted potential employees, reviewing their reels and previous work. He has learned more about what the company seeks in on-air talent and gained insight into the decision making that goes on behind the scenes.

    “Being a younger person in the room, they would ask me who I liked and what’s  appealing to a younger person. I appreciated being included in the discussion,’’ he says.

    Spinelli, a native of Shelton, had a marketing internship at a health-insurance company, but wasn’t enamored with the work. In 2023, he pursued an internship at WTNH in New Haven, and that fueled his interest in broadcast journalism and production. He helped reporters with their scripts, edited some videos, and got a chance to try many aspects of the business.

    “I’d be at an animal shelter one day, surrounded by puppies, and at the site of a shooting the next day,’’ he says. “It was fast-paced, and I loved that it was something different every day.’’

    In addition to his coursework as a double major in management and communication, Spinelli says serving as a UConn Tour Guide and as Vice President of the Undergraduate Student Government prepared him well for his current job.

    “As a tour guide, you’re working to present UConn in a positive light and answer questions about the university,’’ he says. “On the other side, the student government is often calling on the administration to do something better. During my time there, we created a food pantry because we knew there were students who were struggling and living on ramen. I have seen both sides.’’

    “Those two jobs both involved telling the student story, from recruiting to advocacy,’’ he says. “Those two experiences prepared me for what I’m doing now, especially when it comes to being impartial and telling both sides of the story.’’

    He credits the flexibility of UConn’s academic programs for allowing him to add journalism courses during his senior year. Before graduation, he applied to 50 jobs and internships. He says he feels lucky to have been hired by ABC, which is a Disney-owned company. His job runs until January, and he would love to stay on permanently.

    One of the most surprising aspects of his job is how welcoming the talent is.

    “They are very responsive to any request. They always come up to chat and never say no to posing for a photo or appearing in a silly video that I’m making for our team’s Instagram,’’ he says. “It’s great to know they’re the people they come across as on TV.’’

    Emilia Kwasniak Enjoys the Business Side of Media

    Growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y., Emilia Kwasniak was a proud theater kid. One of her favorite TV shows was “Victorious,” a Nickelodeon sitcom revolving around Tori Vega, a promising talent who attends Hollywood Arts, a fictional performing arts high school.

    “It aligned well with me as a theater kid. In that show, all the performing arts kids are super cool,’’ she says, laughing.

    Kwasniak says her long-term temporary job as a media planning coordinator at Nickelodeon involves importing shows, commercials, promos, and ratings, as well as scheduling and marketing strategy. She distinguishes herself by being a quick study and a conscientious worker.

    “I’m so happy to work somewhere that impacted me as a kid,’’ she says. “It is very collaborative here and I’m working with phenomenal people. I’m very lucky.’’

    During her time at UConn, Kwasniak was an Honors student, photo producer for The Daily Campus, and Vice President of Internal Services for UConn Student Television.

    But perhaps the most impactful experience was serving as Director of Media for the HuskyTHON Miracle Network Dance Marathon, which required a year-long commitment to strategizing and executing the fundraiser’s marketing campaign, including photography, videography, and managing a team of 10 student photographers. The event raised a record-breaking $1.7 million for Connecticut Children’s Foundation.

    “Before this experience, working in the entertainment business seemed like a far-fetched dream. But HuskyTHON helped me realize that I could truly succeed in that environment. It’s the largest student-run organization on campus, so on top of the marketing experience I gained, it was also a big time commitment. I had to collaborate with a lot of people and cross-functional teams, which even included employees and families from Connecticut Children’s,’’ she says.

    “There were so many email chains, meetings, and projects that I had to shift my attention to on a daily basis, while consistently maintaining the high quality of my work, so it taught me a great deal about what a professional workplace looks like,’’ she says. “It was essentially like an internship and equipped me with all the professional skills I needed to succeed.’’

    Kwasniak’s greatest accomplishment in that role was producing the announcement video that brought the year-long campaign to life. “It surpassed 100,000 views on Instagram, which is an impressive accomplishment that helped me stand out during my Nickelodeon interview,’’ she says. “As the media planning coordinator, my role is to promote Nickelodeon’s short-and long-term campaigns on our channels, so it was helpful to mention my campaign announcement video and the tangible results that came from promoting it.’’

    Kwasniak credits a one-credit career development course she took with Kennedy for giving her a foot in the door at Nickelodeon. Kennedy had assigned the students to reach out to conduct an informational interview with someone at a company where they might want to work.

    “I knew someone who worked at Nickelodeon and asked for advice,’’ Kwasniak says. They had a great conversation, and the woman gave Kwasniak guidance to enhance her professional experiences.

    “Right before graduation, she called and asked if I’d be interested in a temporary job. I said, ‘I’m beyond interested!’’’ she recalls. “If it weren’t for that class, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to reach out and ultimately wouldn’t have the job.’’

    Kwasniak applied to UConn as a political science major, capitalizing on her love of history and social studies. But she kept exploring other options and wound up majoring in finance.

    “I realized I can work on the business side of media and entertainment. I didn’t think I could create the content, but I could certainly help put it out,’’ she says. Today she promotes events and premiers, including the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show and The Kids’ Choice Awards.

    “If I told 10-year-old me that I work at Nickelodeon now, she would probably think that I’m pranking her,’’ Kwasniak says. “As a kid, I didn’t even realize that working in entertainment was an option for me. I always had this expectation that becoming an adult and working an ‘adult job’ would be boring. Ten-year-old me would be so proud of me for finding a job that I am truly passionate about, and that I look forward to every day. And she would definitely think that I’m the coolest person in the world!’’
