    Washington, D.C. – During World Pride celebrations in the nation’s capital, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi paid a solemn visit to the AIDS Memorial Quilt display at St. Thomas’ Parish in Dupont Circle. The exhibit honors members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C. who died of AIDS in the 1980s and ’90s.

    Pelosi, a lifelong champion in the fight against HIV/AIDS, viewed panels created in memory of more than 30 chorus members, many lovingly sewn by grieving friends and family during the height of the epidemic.

    “At first, I thought a quilt was a bad idea. But I was wrong,” Speaker Emerita Pelosi said. “The art became the most unifying thing. You see someone’s story laid out before you—their grief, their joy, their love—and suddenly, you understand. That is the power of this movement.”

    Pelosi reflected on her decades-long advocacy, recalling her first speech on the House Floor about HIV/AIDS and the initial resistance she faced. “People said, ‘Why would you lead with that?’ And I said, ‘Because that’s why I came here. I came to fight.’”

    The Advocate: Nancy Pelosi visits AIDS Quilt exhibit during WorldPride

    In the hushed sanctuary of St. Thomas’ Parish in Dupont Circle, there is a sacred memorial in fabric and thread. During WorldPride, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C., in partnership with St. Thomas’ and the National AIDS Memorial, unveiled a deeply personal display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt that includes panels for chorus members who were lost to the epidemic in the 1980s and ’90s.

    The exhibit features full quilt blocks and a companion photo display, honoring dozens of chorus members who died of AIDS complications. Some panels are decades-old, sewn by grieving loved ones at the height of the crisis. One in particular, the first made by and for chorus members, holds special meaning.

    “For us, this is not just history. These are our people,” said Michael Hughes, the chorus’s outreach manager, who has sung with the group for more than 20 years. “We estimate that about 100 members of our chorus died of AIDS. A hundred voices silenced.”

    The idea for the exhibit was sparked earlier this year after chorus members visited a local high school class reading Angels in America. “The students had no context for what life was like in the ’80s and ’90s,” Hughes explained. “We told them about the fear, about watching friends die, and about the quilt.”

    After that visit, chorus member Larry Cohen emailed Hughes with an idea and a question: What if they searched for quilt panels made in honor of their fallen members?

    “So we spent two and a half months digging into the National AIDS Memorial database, the Names Project records, and the digitized archives in the Library of Congress,” Hughes said. “We were able to confirm 33 individual chorus members who had panels made. Some we remembered personally.”

    The setting of St. Thomas’ Parish is itself part of the story. “During the AIDS crisis, only two or three churches in the city would even hold funerals for someone who had died of AIDS,” Hughes said. “St. Thomas’ was one of them.”

    On Friday night, the exhibit drew a special guest, House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, a longtime and fierce advocate in the fight against AIDS. Pelosi spent time with chorus members and viewed the panels while the group performed two songs in honor of her visit under the direction of Artistic Director Thea Kano.

    Addressing the chorus members, Pelosi recalled her own early skepticism about the quilt’s power. “At first, I thought a quilt was a bad idea,” she said. “But I was wrong. The beauty was in the art. And the art became the most unifying thing.”

    “People who may not think they have anything in common suddenly find that they do through these panels,” Pelosi continued. “You see someone’s story laid out before you, and the love they had in their lives. The grief, the anger, the joy, all of it. And it moves you.”

    Pelosi also reflected on the political and cultural battles of the time, and how vital the LGBTQ+ community’s activism was to making change.

    “When I made my first speech in Congress about HIV/AIDS, people said, ‘Why would you talk about that? Why would you lead with that?’” Pelosi recounted. “I said, because that’s why I came here. I came to fight.”

    “Yes, we worked to change policies, pass laws, allocate resources,” she said. “But the real miracle was the outside mobilization of the LGBTQ+ community who refused to be silent. That’s what made the difference. That’s what changed the world.”

    As Pride Month unfolds, the quilt serves as a memorial, a call to action, and a loving and prophetic testament to the quilt’s ability to humanize loss, to transform mourning into music.

    KABUL, June 8 (Xinhua) — A massive fire broke out at a second-hand clothing market in the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday morning, local TV channel Ariana News reported.

    As the TV channel noted, citing one of the market’s traders, the fire broke out at around 9:00 a.m. local time in the area of the 5th police district in the western part of the capital, and the fire engulfed around 200 stores.

    Law enforcement officials reported that despite strong winds, firefighters managed to contain the fire.

    Thick black smoke was visible from several kilometers away, causing concern among residents of Kabul. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

    The blaze is the second major fire in Afghanistan in three weeks. On May 16, a fire at a market in the northern Kunduz province damaged several shops. –0–

  • MIL-OSI Global: Tracking apps monitor remote employees’ performance — and invade their privacy

    Digital monitoring is now a regular part of our working reality. From CCTV cameras to call recording, surveillance in the workplace is not new.

    But workers now face a more detailed and intrusive type of monitoring that is less understood, and at times even entirely unknown, by employees: employee monitoring applications (EMAs).

    It’s no longer just about being captured in the frame of a CCTV camera or having phone calls recorded. Workers now must be concerned about the collection of any and all activities that occur on their devices, and the use of this information to make decisions about their productivity, performance and risk to company security.

    Behaviour-monitoring software

    EMAs are a type of monitoring software that can be installed on worker devices to monitor their behaviours and activities. Common features include tracking time, keyboard strokes, email communications, websites visited, applications used and webcam video footage. Many of these apps also operate in an “invisible mode” that runs in the background, unknown to the employee.

    Amid the move to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada, employers faced the challenge of managing their employees while they worked from home. EMAs provided employers with a quick and easy solution.

    My research focuses on surveillance and privacy. Working alongside surveillance scholar Adam Molnar of the University of Waterloo, we conducted a survey between January and February 2022 of 402 managers, supervisors and employers working in companies in Ontario (60 per cent), British Columbia (30 per cent) and Québec (10 per cent) to better understand the use of these apps during the pandemic.

    Both remote working and EMA use were found to have increased after the start of the pandemic. Many, but not all, companies turned to EMAs to monitor their remote workers.

    Privacy concerns

    We asked participants about the specific EMA software their company uses. A variety of EMAs exist on the market and are advertised for uses from security to workforce analytics. The most frequently used apps in our sample were Kickidler (49.8 per cent), Spyera (49.5 per cent), Flexispy (49.3 per cent), and Teramind (48.4 per cent).

    We then took a deeper dive into their advertised features and found that all four apps collected data using at least two highly invasive features, such as video surveillance or keystroke logging.

    Collecting data in these ways can raise serious concerns for employee privacy, especially when they work at home — a space that is typically viewed as private and often contains personal information that employers should not be privy to.

    If we’re concerned about employee privacy, then we need to understand exactly what companies are using the data for.

    We know that employee monitoring apps were adopted by many Canadian companies to manage remote workers, but what does that mean exactly? What is the data actually telling employers and how are they using it?

    We asked employers, managers and supervisors how their company currently uses EMAs, and found the most common uses to be productivity (28.9 per cent), efficiency (20.1 per cent), remote workforce management (19.9 per cent) and company analytics (18.2 per cent).

    Privacy versus productivity

    Owners and managers appear to be aware of the harmful consequences of these applications: 87.1 per cent were at least somewhat concerned about the negative impacts of these apps on employee trust. More than two-thirds — 70.7 per cent — also reported that they would be more likely adopt an app if it did not use invasive features like keystroke logging and video surveillance.

    Are the gains in productivity and efficiency worth the losses to employee privacy and trust? For some companies, the answer appears to be yes. While most owners and managers reported concerns about the invasiveness of EMAs, 51.7 per cent were still using the applications.

    For other companies, the gains in productivity are not worth the risks to employee privacy. For example, 29.3 per cent of owners and managers stated that significant changes to app features would be necessary before they would consider using it in their company.

    Protecting employees

    As hybrid working arrangements remain a normal part of our working lives, employee monitoring apps appear to be here to stay.

    A public opinion poll by the Center for Democracy and Technology in the United States found that American workers wanted to know why and how they were being monitored by their employers.

    Workers also felt they should be able to review any and all data collected about them, and that employers should be prohibited from sharing worker data without their permission, monitoring workers while off the clock, tracking their locations and monitoring productivity in ways that are harmful to the mental or physical health of workers.

    In Canada, the protection of employee privacy falls under a patchwork of federal and provincial laws that is insufficient for the management of EMAs.

    Worker protections vary by province and territory. Ontario’s Bill 88, passed in April 2022, established the first notification law for electronic monitoring in Canada. While a step in the right direction, notification alone is insufficient for the protection of worker privacy and well-being.

    Restrictions must be placed on the types of data collected, how it is collected and what it can be used for.

    Companies that continue to use EMAs must respect the privacy of workers by limiting the use of invasive features and providing workers with transparency and agency in their monitoring.

    Business owners considering the use of EMAs should ask themselves if the software is necessary to reach their goals. Do they need to track the location and activity of workers or access their webcams to determine productivity? Or are there other less harmful ways to measure performance, such as the quality of outputs and whether tasks are completed on time?

    The second day of the BAL (BAL.NBA.com) Playoffs in Pretoria tipped off with defending champions Petro de Luanda (Angola) taking on APR (Rwanda), with APR coming out on top in a 75-57 win. APR’s Aliou Diarra led all scorers with 19 points, along with 14 rebounds. Nuni Omot also poured in 15 points, along with six boards. Petro de Luanda’s Patrick Gardner scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

    In the second seeding game of the night, 2022 BAL champions US Monastir (Tunisia) faced off against last year’s semifinalists, Rivers Hoopers (Nigeria). US Monastir emerged victorious, led by an explosive performance from former NBA Academy Africa student athlete Babacar Sane, who scored 22 points.     The China Film Administration gathered domestic and international filmmakers at a Beijing launch event on June 6 to promote upcoming summer releases, aiming to boost audience interest and inject new vitality into China’s film market.

    The summer season, the year’s longest film release window, draws major attention from industry professionals and audiences nationwide. More than 60 domestic and international films are slated for release during the season.

    Domestic films this summer span a range of genres, including historical dramas, suspense thrillers, action films, comedies and animated features, offering a variety of choices for audiences.

    Among the most anticipated projects is “Dong Ji Island,” which tells the story of fishermen from the Dongji Islands who resisted Japanese invaders during World War II while undertaking a perilous international maritime rescue mission inspired by the Lisbon Maru incident. Another highly awaited title is “The Lychee Road,” which follows a minor Tang dynasty official’s arduous journey to deliver lychees to the imperial court as a royal fruit envoy.

    The lineup also includes “She’s Got No Name,” which is based on a high-profile Shanghai murder case.     Chief Justice, members of the Judiciary, Chairman of the Bar (Hong Kong Bar Association), President of the Law Society (Law Society of Hong Kong), fellow members of the legal profession, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
     
         On behalf of the Department of Justice, I wish to extend my warmest congratulations to the three new silks: Ms Catrina Lam, Ms Priscilia Lam and Mr Timothy Parker. Their appointments as Senior Counsel are undoubtedly well deserved.
     
         I have to confess that I had a mixed feeling upon seeing their names in the press release of the Judiciary. On the one hand, I noted at once that the family name of two of the appointees is “Lam” (林). I am, naturally, very proud and pleased that the “Lams” seem to be doing quite well in the legal field. Other prominent examples would include eminent members of the Judiciary such as Johnson Lam PJ and Godfrey Lam JA. On the other hand, I was a bit concerned that this is second year in a row that there are more female appointees than male!
     
         Catrina has a very successful practice mainly in the area of commercial and competition law. For those of you who know the Chinese names of Catrina and me, apart from having the same family name, the second character is also identical i.e. “定”. Very shortly after the Judiciary’s announcement, I received a WeChat message from a lawyer friend on the Mainland asking very seriously whether Catrina is my younger sister!
     
         Priscilia, as we all know, specialises in criminal law. The Department of Justice has instructed her to prosecute in many important criminal cases. When I was preparing this speech, I asked one of my colleagues in the Prosecution Division whether there is anything funny or interesting that I can say about Priscilia. To my disappointment, the answer that I received is that “Sorry, I tried and tried, scratched my head, but I just can’t think of anything funny.” Perhaps I have not asked the right person. Anyhow, it is well known that Priscilia is very sporty; and is very good at kick boxing, snowboarding and wake surfing. At one point, I was very tempted to consult Zervos JA, who is, as we all know, the dear husband of Priscilia, on the level of her kick boxing skills as he might have some first-hand experience but, on reflection, that did not appear to be a good idea at all!
     
         As to Timothy, he has a general civil practice and is particularly recognised for his expertise in public law and constitutional matters. I was told that his son, Graham, was born last month. So, coupled with his appointment as Senior Counsel, this is what we would say in Chinese: “雙喜臨門”, double happiness.
     
         Apart from today’s ceremony, there were two other significant legal events in the past week or so. First, last Wednesday, the Legislative Council approved the appointment of Sir William Young, an eminent former judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, as a foreign non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal. Second, about a week ago on May 30, 33 countries including China signed the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation in Hong Kong. Representatives from around other 40 countries and 20 international organisations also attended the ceremony. These encouraging developments demonstrate that Hong Kong’s status as an international legal and dispute resolution services centre is strongly supported and acknowledged by our country and the international community.
     
         Hong Kong’s success in this respect so far is attributed to our common law system, which is indeed one of the most important and distinctive advantages enjoyed by Hong Kong under the principle of “one country, two systems”. While we must do our best to preserve and enhance the essential features and core values of our common law system, it is vital not to overlook many challenges ahead. Senior Counsel, as leaders of our strong and independent bar, are expected and required to play proactive and leading roles in overcoming these challenges. For the present purpose, I would like to mention three of them.
     
    The first challenge is how to use technological innovations to promote efficiency, but without compromising the integrity, of judicial proceedings. I wish to quote from an English decision handed down yesterday in Ayinde, R (On the Application of) v Qatar National Bank QPSC & Anor [2025] EWHC 1383 (Admin) “Artificial intelligence is a tool that carries with it risks as well as opportunities. Its use must take place therefore with an appropriate degree of oversight, and within a regulatory framework that ensures compliance with well-established professional and ethical standards if public confidence in the administration of justice is to be maintained… In the context of legal research, the risks of using artificial intelligence are now well known. Freely available generative artificial intelligence tools, trained on a large language model such as ChatGPT are not capable of conducting reliable legal research. Such tools can produce apparently coherent and plausible responses to prompts, but those coherent and plausible responses may turn out to be entirely incorrect. The responses may make confident assertions that are simply untrue. They may cite sources that do not exist. They may purport to quote passages from a genuine source that do not appear in that source. Those who use artificial intelligence to conduct legal research notwithstanding these risks have a professional duty therefore to check the accuracy of such research…There are serious implications for the administration of justice and public confidence in the justice system if artificial intelligence is misused. In those circumstances, practical and effective measures must now be taken by those within the legal profession with individual leadership responsibilities (such as heads of chambers and managing partners) and by those with the responsibility for regulating the provision of legal services. Those measures must ensure that every individual currently providing legal services within this jurisdiction (whenever and wherever they were qualified to do so) understands and complies with their professional and ethical obligations and their duties to the court if using artificial intelligence.” It is clear that these important remarks apply equally to Hong Kong.
     
         The second challenge is how to enhance the synergy between our common law system and the Mainland legal system under the principle of “one country, two systems”. To maintain Hong Kong’s unique attractiveness as a “super connector” and “super value-adder” between China and the rest of the world in the provision of legal and dispute resolution services, it is essential to review, and improve on, the existing mutual legal assistance arrangements in civil and commercial matters continuously. All of them are concerned with either judicial or arbitration proceedings in which counsel are usually heavily involved. On the other hand, there is a huge and growing demand on the Mainland for capacity building on international legal practice. A good recent example is the Legal Services Forum, which included a mock arbitration, held in Xi’an about two weeks ago in late May, which was attended by a large number of Mainland lawyers not just from Shaanxi but many other neighbouring provinces and regions in Western China. One of the most sought-after topics in these capacity building programmes is the skill and etiquette of oral advocacy, which is something that Senior Counsel are renowned for.
     
         The third challenge is to maintain Hong Kong’s international image regarding its rule of law. We have to face the music. For whatever reasons, many people outside Hong Kong do not have a proper and complete understanding of the present state of the rule of law, and the actual operation of our legal and judicial systems, in Hong Kong. Nowadays, perception is reality. A negative perception, no matter how misplaced, is liable to impair people’s trust and confidence in Hong Kong as an international legal and dispute resolution services centre. Senior Counsel, owing to their status as respectable and independent legal professionals as well as skillful advocates, are best positioned to tell the good and true story of Hong Kong in this regard.
     
         These challenges must, of course, be overcome by different branches of the legal profession of Hong Kong together. But, as I said earlier and for reasons that I explained, it is reasonably expected that Senior Counsel, as an institution representing the cream of our profession, should take the lead to do so. I sincerely hope that the three new silks would join the efforts in this respect.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Sols 4561-4562: Prepping to Drill at Altadena

    We are continuing to look for a suitable location to collect a drilled sample in this area. As you may recall from Monday’s plan, we performed a short “bump” of just under 4 meters (about 13 feet) hoping to find a drill target today after Monday’s analysis determined that there were no good targets in our previous workspace. Happily, today’s workspace was much more cooperative, and we were able to select the target “Altadena” as our next potential drill location. Altadena is a name that we’ve been saving for a special target, as its namesake here on Earth is a neighborhood next to JPL that was devastated by the Eaton Fire earlier this year. We’re about to enter our next mapping quadrangle, which will come with a new set of target names, so the team decided that using Altadena as the name for this drill site was an obvious choice.
    The big activity in this plan is the next step in the drilling process. This activity is the “preload test,” which determines if the forces on the drill will be good while drilling, and the drill target won’t unexpectedly move or fracture. If we pass the preload test and find that the rock has the chemistry we’re looking for, we’ll be able to proceed with Altadena as our next drill site. If we don’t, we’ll have to decide whether to bump again or resume driving deeper into this potentially boxwork-bearing region.
    Of course, the preload test isn’t the only thing we’re doing today. Coming in, it was looking like our time for other activities would be pretty tight due to power constraints imposed by preparations for drilling and keeping the rover warm during the cold Martian winter. However, we’ve recently implemented some new power-optimizing capabilities, which led to us having much more power today than we expected. This meant that we were able to add a whole additional hour of science time in addition to the hour that we already had scheduled. 
    Unsurprisingly, Altadena gets a lot of love in this plan to characterize it before we drill. This includes a ChemCam LIBS activity and a Mastcam observation, as well as some overnight observations by APXS and some MAHLI images. In addition, Mastcam will be observing some exposed stratigraphy at “Dana Point,” a light-toned vein at “Mission Trails” that will also be a ChemCam LIBS target, a few more nearby troughs, and a couple of sandy patches at “Camp Williams” to observe wind-driven sediment transport. Along with the two LIBS, ChemCam will be using its RMI camera to add to the pile of images we have of the Mishe Mokwa butte and the yardang unit off in the distance.
    As the lead for the Atmosphere and Environment (ENV) group today, it looked like I was going to have a pretty light workload due to the power constraints preventing any ENV activities other than our usual REMS, RAD, and DAN observations. With the extra hour of science time, I was able to add a handful of new activities, including three Navcam cloud movies, a Navcam line-of-sight observation of dust within Gale Crater, and a Navcam survey to look for any dust devils that may be swirling around the rover. A pretty decent ENV science haul for a plan that started with nothing!
    When we come into planning on Friday, we’ll hopefully have passed the preload test and will be able to turn Altadena into our 43rd drill hole in the coming sols, before we continue driving up the slopes of Mount Sharp.

  • MIL-Evening Report: The blow-up between Elon Musk and Donald Trump has been entertaining, but how did things go so bad, so fast?

    A no-holds-barred and very public blow-up between the world’s richest man and the president of the United States has had social media agog in recent days, with each making serious accusations against the other.

    And while tech billionaire Elon Musk appears to have cooled the spat somewhat – deleting some of his more incendiary social media posts about Donald Trump – the president still appears to be in no mood to make up, warning Musk of “very serious consequences” if he backs Democrats at the mid-term elections in 2026.

    Tensions erupted over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB). The OBBB proposes extensive tax cuts which could add roughly US$3 trillion (A$4.62 trillion) to the US national debt.

    After stepping down from his role as advisor to Trump, Musk criticised the OBBB as “disgusting abomination” that would “burden America [sic] citizens with crushing unsustainable debt”. Trump returned fire, suggesting “Elon was ‘wearing thin’, I asked him to leave […] and he just went CRAZY!”.

    In a dramatic escalation, Musk responded by calling for Trump’s impeachment. Musk also tweeted allegations that Trump was implicated in the Epstein files related to child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He has since deleted those tweets.

    Why has the much-hyped “bromance” between Musk and Trump suddenly ended? And what was the basis of their alliance in the first place?

    Musk in politics

    Like many billionaires, Musk had previously been hesitant to get involved in frontline politics. He says he voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020, but claimed in 2021 “I would prefer to stay out of politics”.

    In early 2024, Musk was still claiming to be politically non-aligned, suggesting he would not donate to either presidential campaign.

    This apparent neutrality ended following the attempted assassination of Trump at a July 2024 campaign rally, with Musk immediately endorsing Trump.

    In reality, Musk’s conversion to the MAGA movement long predated the assassination attempt. Musk’s hyperactive Twitter/X account shows a steady radicalisation.

    Across 2020-2024, Musk engaged with accounts sharing MAGA and far-right conspiracy theories. These include the antisemitic Great Replacement Theory, and the related South African white genocide conspiracy. Musk’s posts also show the obsession with opposing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies characteristic of the MAGA movement.

    After endorsing Trump, Musk spent US$288 million (A$444 million) supporting Trump’s election and appeared at campaign events around the country.

    Musk’s support for Trump was both ideological and pragmatic.

    From tax cuts to immigration restrictions to opposing DEI, there were clearly many ideological commonalities between Musk and Trump.

    There were also clear practical benefits for both men. Trump gained the financial backing of the world’s wealthiest man. Musk gained not only unparalleled access to the US president, but also a role leading the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

    DOGE: success and failure

    Early reporting on the second Trump presidency noted the omnipresence of Musk, who at one point moved into Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort to be close to the president.

    However, observers were sceptical about the potential effectiveness of DOGE, and Musk’s claim it would save the government US$2 trillion (A$3.02 trillion).

    In the early months of the Trump administration, Musk cut government programs and employees at a remarkable rate. The USAID program was particularly hard hit, as were the Department of Education and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

    As the spending cuts picked up pace, Musk began to attract more controversy. Critics questioned the apparent power wielded by the unelected billionaire. Musk’s ties to the far right were also in the spotlight after he appeared to perform two “Roman salutes”, which many observers believed to be a Nazi salute.

    Trump clips Musk’s wings

    Musk’s apparent rampage through government did not last long. As Trump’s executive appointees assumed control of their departments, Musk and DOGE experienced increasing resistance. After a series of fractious cabinet meetings, Trump reportedly reduced the power of DOGE in March.

    Political attention was also clearly affecting Musk’s businesses. The negative publicity has significantly damaged the Tesla brand, leading to declining sales around the world and repeated falls in Telsa’s share price.

    On May 1, Musk announced he would be leaving DOGE, claiming the department had saved the government US$180 billion (A$277 billion) in spending. This number is likely an exaggeration, but still falls well short of his original target.

    Musk has learned a harsh lesson in politics – that the complexities of government resist simple reform and cannot be easily rolled back in the way a CEO might slim down a company.

    For Trump, his manoeuvring of Musk appears to be another smart political move. As the public face of DOGE, Musk bore the negative wrap for early government cuts and chaos. Having used his money and reputation, Trump dispensed with Musk as he has with so many advisers and appointees before.

    The falling out

    Musk departed his role in a muted White House ceremony, where Trump thanked him for his service and presented him with a ceremonial “golden key” to the White House.

    However, behind the public show of civility, tension was brewing over Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill.

    Trump and Musk had originally claimed that the US$2 trillion (A$3.02 trillion) in DOGE savings could be used to fund a substantial tax cut. With the efficiency savings not eventuating, Musk worried the OBBB would significantly increase US public debt.

    Unable to convince Trump or other Republican legislators, Musk took to X, launching a “Kill the Bill” campaign that ultimately led to his incendiary showdown with Trump.

    For his part, Trump has belittled Musk, suggesting Musk only opposed the OBBB because it cut subsidies for electric vehicles.

    Though the subsidy cuts will affect Tesla, Musk has previously supported eliminating subsidies. Musk’s anger at the OBBB is more likely driven by the realisation he has been played by Trump.

    What now?

    Trump has used and discarded many other powerful figures in his chaotic political career. Musk has more power than most, and might be able to strike back at Trump.

    Yet, with his public reputation and brands already tarnished, Musk would be ill-advised to pick further fights with Trump and his adoring MAGA movement.

    Accordingly, Musk has indicated over the weekend he is open to a détente. Tesla investors will no doubt be relieved if Musk makes good on his pledge to step back from politics and return to his businesses.

    More concerning are the prospects for democracy. With wealth and power continuing to concentrate in a handful of billionaires, voters appear reduced to the role of viewers forced to watch the reality TV drama unfold.

    Though Trump appears to have won this round of billionaire battle royale, whatever happens next, democracy is the real loser.

    WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) and Congressman Dave Taylor (OH-02) introduced the bipartisan Drug-price Transparency for Consumers Act of 2025, which would require drug companies to include the list price of prescription drugs in all direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertisements. This bill is the identical House version of its Senate companion, which was introduced by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) in the United State Senate on January 23, 2025.

    “For years, Big Pharma has poured billions of dollars into advertisements to push overpriced prescription drugs on consumers. The United States is one of just two countries in the world that allows pharmaceutical companies to advertise directly to patients. These heavily advertised drugs are often some of the most expensive on the market, driving huge costs on patients,” said Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. “Consumers deserve to know the price of a product before they buy it. This is why Congressman Taylor and I are introducing the Drug-price Transparency for Consumers (DTC) Act to ensure that the costs of medications are made clear in ads.”

Analysis has additionally shown that DTC advertising produces a return on investment of 100-500% for drug companies, as patients are directed to ask their doctor to prescribe a drug they’ve seen advertised.

    By increasing demand for largely low-benefit drugs, costs to government health programs also increase, leaving taxpayers on the hook. A GAO report found that from 2016 to 2018, Medicare spent $320 billion on drugs that were DTC-advertised (58% of Medicare’s total drug spending).

    This proposal has garnered support from consumers across the Nation, with a Kaiser Family Foundation survey finding that 88% of Americans support requiring drug companies to include the list price of medication in advertisements.

    The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested 4 youths after an aggravated robbery in Katherine last night.

    Just before 9:20pm, it is alleged that five youth offenders had entered the backyard of a property on Sandalwood Crescent, all armed with various edged and blunt weapons . The offenders then threatened a female resident before stealing her vehicle, ramming through the properties gate and fleeing the scene.

    Around 10:20pm, the vehicle was found abandoned on a bush track behind Callistemon Drive.

    A short time later, Katherine Police arrested 4 male youths, aged 12, 13,13 and 13.

    All currently remain in custody pending charges being laid.

    Police believe the offenders were also involved in the recent aggravated robbery on Grevillea Road with investigations ongoing.  Police urge anyone with information, including dash cam or CCTV footage, to contact police on 131 444 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

    Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement Friday in affected areas, warning that people most vulnerable to health impacts from air pollution should avoid strenuous outdoor work and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.

    BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhua) — The film slate for the 2025 summer movie season was announced on Friday, with more than 60 Chinese and international films scheduled to be released to entertain audiences.

    The State Film Administration of China unveiled the list at a special event attended by cast and crews of several upcoming films, where they promoted their projects and shared key points with the public.

    This year’s summer lineup of domestic films covers a wide range of genres, including historical drama, thriller, action, comedy and animation, satisfying the increasingly diverse tastes of moviegoers.

    Among the Chinese films on display was “Dongji Island,” which tells the story of fishermen involved in a dramatic international maritime rescue operation.

    Another film, Lychee Road, follows the journey of an official during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) who was tasked with delivering fresh lychees, a mission that became an epic adventure.

    In the animation category, films like Nobody promise exciting content for young audiences during the holidays.

    The lineup of imported films that will be shown in Chinese cinemas during the summer months includes such well-known films as “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Jurassic World: Resurgence” and “Mission: Impossible – Final Fantasy XIV.”

    The event also featured a number of initiatives aimed at encouraging cinema attendance this summer.

    During the recent traditional Duanwu (Dragon Boat Festival) holiday, both box office receipts and the number of cinema attendees increased significantly compared to the same period last year.

    This year’s Dragon Boat Festival served as an effective warm-up for the upcoming summer season, signaling a recovery in the film market, said Lai Li, an analyst at Chinese film platform Maoyan, noting that the list of films scheduled for release this summer is extensive and diverse in genre. -0-

    JERUSALEM, June 7 (Xinhua) — Four Israeli soldiers were killed in the southern Gaza Strip on Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

    The dead soldiers included 33-year-old Staff Sergeant Hen Gross and 19-year-old Staff Sergeant Yoav Raver, according to the statement.

    Israeli state television Kan TV News reported that the soldiers were killed when an explosive device went off at a Hamas-linked building in Khan Yunis, causing the building to collapse.

    Rescuers worked for several hours to extract bodies from the rubble, the channel reported. IDF troops entered the building after receiving intelligence that a Hamas tunnel was located underneath.

    According to the channel and the IDF, five more soldiers were injured in the incident. –0–

  • MIL-OSI China: Wildfire smoke causes poor air quality in major Canadian cities

    Smoke from wildfires burning in northern Ontario and the Prairies of Canada caused poor air quality and reduced visibility in major cities including Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal on Friday.

    Environment Canada issued special air quality statements for these areas on Friday, warning that people most likely to suffer health effects from air pollution should avoid strenuous activities outdoors and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

    Environment Canada’s David Phillips said on CTV News that as wildfires ramp up across the country, air quality is deteriorating.

    “What we’ve seen this week, of course, in Ontario is a lot of that smoke from fires has come south,” Phillips said.

    “Only a few see the flames but millions smell the smoke,” he said.

    According to data from Swiss air quality tracker IQAir, Toronto’s air quality was ranked the second worst in the world Friday afternoon.

    KUNMING, June 7 (Xinhua) — Chinese and German astronomers recently announced the discovery of an exoplanet in the habitable zone, meaning its surface temperature allows liquid water to exist, the Yunnan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) said.

    Studies of Earth-like exoplanets are conducted based on several physical factors, including size, mass, surface temperature, etc., that influence the habitability of the planet.

    The newly discovered celestial body orbits the central star Kepler-725, which is 2,472 light years from the solar system. Scientists estimate that Kepler-725, which is much younger than the Sun, has only existed for 1.6 billion years. As a result, more violent activity is observed on the surface of the star.

    The discovered planet’s rotation period around its host star is about 207.5 days, which is relatively close to the Earth’s rotation period. Its mass is 10 times greater than that of our planet.

    There are currently 5,912 confirmed planets outside the Solar System. Very few of these are classified as planets that have physical factors that make them habitable.

    Many methods have been developed to search for exoplanets. The most productive of these are considered to be the methods of astrometric measurements and passages /transits/. The first method involves attempts to register the periodic displacement of stars on the celestial sphere under the influence of planets orbiting them, and the second uses the effect of weakening the visible brightness of a star when an exoplanet passes in front of it.

    However, the limitations of these two methods are obvious. They make it extremely difficult to detect Earth-sized exoplanets due to their relatively small size and the great distance from the stars they orbit.

    Sun Leilei, a researcher at the Yunnan Observatory, said the exoplanet was found using the Transit Timing Variation (TTV) method.

    The TTV method is based on determining the start time of a known exoplanet’s transit and deducing whether its transit occurs with strict periodicity or whether there are some deviations. In other words, the researchers managed to “indirectly” prove the existence of a previously unknown celestial body in the Kepler-725 planetary system.

    Thus, astronomers have discovered for the first time an exoplanet located in the habitable zone. The results of their research were published in the prestigious international scientific journal Nature Astronomy on June 3.

    The question of the existence of life on the discovered exoplanet remains open. -0-
