Headline: How the mind-splitting world of Severance comes together on Mac

    March 26, 2025

    UPDATE

How the :br(s):mind-splitting world :br(s):of Severance :br(s):comes together on Mac

Geoffrey Richman, supervising editor on the global hit Apple Original workplace thriller, shares his creative process, why Mac is an indispensable tool, and his thoughts on who’s behind the video editing at Lumon

In the fictional world of Lumon Industries, the biotech titan that’s central to the Apple Original series Severance, it’s possible to separate a person’s work and personal selves through a surgical procedure. And yet, for some employees of the cutting-edge company, video editing proves particularly challenging. In episode four of season two, “Woe’s Hollow,” we got a glimpse at a lo-fi attempt in the video that welcomes the Macrodata Refinement Department to the Outdoor Retreat and Team Building Occurrence (ORTBO).

“It’s hilarious,” says Geoffrey Richman, one of the show’s real-life editors and a three-time Emmy Award nominee. “With the jumpcuts and glitchy edits in the ORTBO video, it feels like Milchick [played by Tramell Tillman] cut the video together quickly with Miss Huang [Sarah Bock] in the back room behind his office.”

Richman can’t relate. From his iMac in his at-home edit bay in Park Slope, Brooklyn, he works closely with his colleagues — including executive producer and director Ben Stiller — to create a visually and aurally stunning, genre-blurring, certifiable hit show.

While Milchick may have access to unlimited paper clips and celebratory melon platters, he most certainly doesn’t have access to the Mac-powered setup that Richman relies on to do his job so successfully. His ecosystem of Macs — which includes his iMac, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro — became even more essential during the season two finale, “Cold Harbor.” This was one of the show’s most challenging episodes to edit, according to Richman.

“For the finale, there was a lot of experimenting with structure and testing out different ideas about how to play out different scenes,” says Richman. “It was a constant flow of ideas and my Mac setup allowed for such a smooth experience.”

“In cutting the marching band, there were about 70 angles and takes to choose from, so we synced them all up in one multicam clip with banks of nine [3×3 arrays],” he continues. “Being able to play nine angles simultaneously in real time — and switch quickly between all the different options — made it a whole lot easier to find what we wanted at any given moment.”

The only thing Richman does relate to about the Lumon crew is that he descends a level to work each day, much like the show’s protagonist Mark Scout, played by Adam Scott. On a lower floor within his apartment, Richman edits on iMac, which remotes into a separate Mac mini. This Mac mini runs Avid — the industry-standard video editing software — from a post-production facility in Manhattan’s West Village.

It’s a familiar setup for Richman, who says the vast majority of all the editing work he’s ever done is on Mac. “I like the interface on Mac a lot better than on a PC,” he says. “I find the way the operating system is laid out to be much more comfortable. I’m able to move between different applications very quickly on Mac.”

The setup is also ideal for a job that doesn’t always take place at a single desk. Though Richman, along with the rest of the editors on the show, is remote, he occasionally heads to set, where there’s an edit room with iMac. And he’s also brought his MacBook Pro onto set to have easy access to cuts for reference on location as needed.

“I can work on my laptop and I can work on my iMac, and I can work at the post facility or I can work at Ben’s office, and as long as I’m logged into my account, everything I do shows up everywhere,” says Richman, who appreciates the seamless data sharing and device collaboration that happens with iCloud and Continuity. “I could be lying in bed and I have a thought, and I’ll type it into my iPhone, and then the next day, it just shows up in the Notes app on my desktop. That aspect of Mac I find very handy — to not think about which system I’m physically at.”

While working on “Woe’s Hollow,” Richman depended on the performance, portability, and exceptional battery life of MacBook Pro for a visit with Stiller near the snow-covered Minnewaska State Park Preserve in upstate New York, where the episode was filmed. Richman also appreciates the multiple ports on MacBook Pro, including an HDMI port, which is important for collaboration during an edit.

“I was able to go to the place where Ben was staying and plugged my MacBook Pro into his TV, and we were able to edit right off of my laptop,” he says.

Richman is also a fan of how easy it is to multitask on Mac. “I like running all the things that I use throughout the day all the time,” he says. “So I have Avid running, as well as the Notes app, Slack, Mail, Messages, Calendar, and Safari. All these things are open and running all the time, but then I love that I can use a shortcut to access Mission Control to switch over to a different app.”

Multitasking is a major component of Richman’s work, as he sometimes works with Stiller on individual scenes — such as the birthing cabin sequence in the season two finale — before the assemblies are completed.

“I would send Ben cuts of scenes as I finished them to get early feedback on them,” says Richman. “He would either send notes in an email or we would talk about it on the phone, then I could do another pass of the scene even before getting through the whole episode. That way, we knew we were always climbing the same mountain.”

An episode’s score also happens simultaneously with the edit. Richman speaks with Theodore Shapiro, the show’s composer, regularly during editing. And if Shapiro sends music cues after the workday has ended, Richman is often too excited to wait until the next day to hear them, so he listens immediately from his MacBook Pro or iPhone using AirPods Pro 2.

“Music is such a big part of enhancing the show,” says Richman. “You can actually shift a scene into a darker tone based purely on the music. Even though everything about the scene would otherwise look pretty light, the music can bring you into the way a character is feeling as opposed to what you’re seeing onscreen.”

Shapiro composed the two marching band songs used in the season finale, an episode that required an extreme amount of coordination in the editing. Working on his iMac, Richman had to make sure the instruments on camera stayed in sync with the music — all while building one of the most frenetic, tension-fraught sequences of the season. Organizing the marching band footage alone took over a week, and with so many angles and takes to choose from at any given moment, there were potentially hundreds of ways to cut the scenes.

“Those were definitely scenes where I was jotting down notes on my iPhone and then — to get a different perspective — I’d work on my MacBook Pro, sketching ideas while sitting on my couch or in bed, before bringing those thoughts back to my iMac,” he says.

For audiences, the finale delivered higher stakes, new insights into the mysterious inner workings of Lumon, and likely a more menacing view of marching bands. For Richman, the finale brought both big obstacles and major rewards.

“I mean, the marching band scenes were extremely challenging,” he says. “But I hesitate because with the finale, for example, where we were doing a lot of work with structure, that’s a part of the process I particularly enjoy. So it’s challenging, but it’s also very satisfying and just fun.”

Season two of Severance is now streaming on Apple TV+. Watch Geoffrey Richman, Ben Stiller, and additional Severance editors discuss the making of the season two finale in Behind the Mac, available now on YouTube. (Warning: this film contains spoilers from season two of Severance.)

  • MIL-OSI: Dinewise, Inc. (DWIS) Releases New Corporate Structure

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

Dinewise files for Name Change and negotiates with Acquisition Targets

ATLANTA, GA, March 26, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Dinewise, Inc (OTC PINK-DWIS) (referred to as “Dinewise”, “we”, “us”, “our” or the “Company”) A leading national technology conglomerate specializing in automotive, fintech, and entertainment solutions officially announces its rebranding and strategic acquisition targets today.

The Dinewise Board of Directors has approved a corporate name change, which is currently being filed with the State of Nevada. The company will now be known as Superstar Platforms, Inc. (“Superstar”), in honor of its patriarch, Mel Farr, Sr., who was widely recognized as the Superstar Dealer. Mel Farr, Sr. embodied the American Dream, rising from humble beginnings in Beaumont, Texas, to becoming the largest African American business in the country during the 1990s. He was a pioneer in the automotive and retail industries, creating opportunities for countless others. His iconic jingle, “Mel Farr, the Superstar, for a Farr Better Deal,” still resonates with many, even decades later.

Superstar Platforms will serve as the parent company that owns and controls a diversified portfolio of subsidiaries across various industries. Growth will primarily be driven through strategic acquisitions. The company is finalizing its negotiations with TitlePal, a fintech company that has developed an innovative online solution for Title Pawn transactions, and anticipates closing the acquisition in Q2/ 2025 with minimal shareholder dilution. Additionally, Superstar is in advanced discussions to become the exclusive North American distributor for a multinational automotive company.

PawnTrust, the company’s specialized marketplace for pawn shops, will now operate as a subsidiary of Superstar. The platform is scheduled to launch in June 2025.

“My father frequently quoted Lucius Annaeus Seneca, saying, ‘If a man does not know to which port he sails, no wind is favorable.’ The corporate structure we’ve built serves as the foundation for our success. With this structure in place, we can intensely drive our initiatives forward,” Michael Farr, Chief Executive Officer.

Superstar Platforms, Inc. is now positioned to file a registration statement, moving swiftly toward becoming a fully SEC-reporting company.

    About Superstar Platforms

Superstar Platforms, a leading national technology conglomerate, owns PawnTrust— a specialized marketplace designed exclusively for the approximately 11,000 pawn shops across the country. The online marketplace (www.pawntrust.com) digitizes the inventory using advanced image recognition algorithms to automate item descriptions of the participating pawn shops and markets them on a national scale. The marketplace contains cutting-edge technology that streamlines the borrowing, buying, and bartering transactions typically found at a pawn shop. The platform plans to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize pricing, reduce fraud, and create personalized search recommendations to enhance the customer’s experience. These enhancements let consumers experience a frictionless shopping experience on their mobile app that gives them instant access to this nationwide inventory of pawn shops. Not only does this provide a more efficient way for consumers to shop, eliminating the need to visit multiple stores, but it also amplifies the reach of individual pawn shop owners. By joining the PawnTrust- ‘Pawn Partners’ network, shop owners gain access to a broader audience, enhancing their visibility and sales opportunities. This innovative approach aligns customer convenience with business growth, reshaping how people interact with the pawn industry. Consumers that purchase items outside of their local area will have their items conveniently shipped to them. As the intermediary in each transaction, PawnTrust earns a fee on every item sold in the marketplace. Many of these local pawn shops lack an online presence or the capital to market their inventory on a national scale. By bridging this gap, PawnTrust opens up opportunities for incremental sales from a wider buying base, effectively transforming the pawn shop and micro-lending industries. This model not only supports local businesses but also extends their reach, driving growth and innovation within the market.”

  • MIL-OSI Global: Snow White: this opportunity to empower Disney’s first princess falls short at every turn

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Laura O’Flanagan, PhD Candidate, School of English, Dublin City University

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a wonder of animation and cinema when it was first released by Disney in 1937. Based on the 1812 German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, it tells the story of a princess whose wicked step mother is intimidated by her youthful beauty. Desperate to be the “fairest of them all” the evil queen tries to have Snow White killed. Evading death, she is forced into hiding with seven dwarves.

It was Disney’s first animated feature-length film and a critical and commercial success. Snow White was also the first Disney princess.

In the decades since, Disney’s pantheon of princesses has grown. Alongside newer princess, Snow White seems pretty antiquated and uninspiring. She is a passive, innocent character who doesn’t do very much but wait around for her prince with whom she travels into the sunset at the film’s conclusion. In contrast, Moana (2016) and Elsa from Frozen (2013) are strong and independent characters who develop into thoughtful and careful leaders by the end of their stories.

So, in an age of live-action remakes of some of Disney’s most iconic films it seemed fitting to give the character who started it all an update for modern audiences. However, the production was mired in controversy before it was even released, raising questions about whether Snow White is a story that can ever really be retold in a more empowering way.

Looking for something good? Cut through the noise with a carefully curated selection of the latest releases, live events and exhibitions, straight to your inbox every fortnight, on Fridays. Sign up here.

Changing the story to move with the times is in keeping with traditions of oral folk tales. But, controversy has followed the film since it was announced. As a result, Disney scaled back their usual red carpet premieres and it has been critically panned upon release.

To many, the prospect of an updated, less romantically inclined Snow White was unthinkable. Some online commenters dubbed a Snow White story where the princess is not dreaming of true love “woke”.

There was also backlash against the choice of Rachel Zegler as Snow White because of her Colombian background. The live-action Snow White isn’t the first remake to be the source of such racism. The ire echoes the hatred which accompanied 2023’s The Little Mermaid, when black actress Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel.

There were also those who had concerns about the story, particularly the titular seven dwarves. Actor Peter Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism, has condemned the production’s use of CGI, rather than casting dwarf actors to play Snow White’s mining companions. The story’s representation of people with dwarfism, has led some to say that the story shouldn’t be retold altogether.

    Read more:
Why the changing representation of dwarfism in Disney’s live action Snow White remake is so important

However, there are some aspects of the story that could have provided interesting opportunities to explore modern issues.

For instance, it could have thoughtfully explored female ageing through the character of the evil queen. It could also, perhaps, have commented on the politics of beauty and the pressure for consumers in their teens and twenties, who have started buying beauty products at younger ages than ever before.

Like Frozen’s tale of sisters saving each other, it could have subverted the trope of the damsel in distress saved by her prince charming. Snow White could have been a strong heroine who can overcome evil on her own terms.

The story could have revised mistakes of the past and depicted different body types and people of different sizes and statures. It could also have portrayed consensual kisses by updating the kiss Snow White receives while asleep, turning it into a moment she chooses to participate in.

Unfortunately, the new Snow White does not achieve any of these, or really anything much at all. The result is a dull, pointless story with poorly rendered visuals, cheap-looking costumes and lacklustre musical numbers.

    Falling short

The 1937 film was a technical marvel and remains one of Disney’s visual masterpieces. Snow White of 2025 looks like she is gallivanting through a theme park ride as she moves through the forest, bathed in permanent evening light among computer-generated woodland creatures in her garish costume.

The miners are introduced as 274-year-old magical creatures. Their appearance is neither human nor magical creature, landing somewhere uncanny in between. This is the crux of the film’s entire problem. The opportunity to update Snow White fails on every level because it does not go far enough.

The story largely remains intact, with some expansion in terms of backstory and some additional characters. The evil queen remains a one-dimensional villain obsessed with beauty.

The script plays with the word “fair”, with it taking on a confused double-meaning in the story. To the queen “fair” is beautiful, in keeping with the 1937 film, but to Snow White, “fair” means just. This is an interesting idea but it becomes muddled as the film progresses, and loses its way.

Snow White is portrayed with an expanded backstory and is certainly given more motivation than in the 1937 film. For instance, she wants to reinstate “fairness” in the kingdom, which has been under the tyrannical rule of the evil queen since Snow White’s father’s death. But as more characters are introduced to aid Snow White on her journey, these serve as distraction and buffer, preventing her from showing any real development or growth.

Prince Charming has been replaced by Jonathan, a Robin Hood-style bandit who condescendingly explains to Snow White why she has “princess problems”. He ultimately saves her by giving her true love’s kiss when she is under the queen’s spell. The issue of consent still swirls around this scene and underscores the question: is this an update at all?

In the end, the queen is ultimately defeated by collective action, compared with a lightning bolt like in 1937. This is a significant development and perhaps the clearest update in the film. In 2025, the defeat of a vain autocrat by collective action is an appealing thought. Perhaps the filmmakers could have leaned into this idea, allowed Snow White to truly become one of the people and a clear democracy could have been established. But, like every other of the film’s updates, it falls short and she remains an unelected autocrat – albeit “the fairest one of all”.

Laura O’Flanagan does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

Your heart and soul will be touched by a surprising array of artists: LOVEU2, Tennessee Whisky, Chico Band, Christian Marc Gendron & Manon Séguin, Andréanne A. Malette, Sabor 19, Duo Phoenix, Guylaine Tanguay, Yvan Pedneault, Génération Crooners, LBA Band, Coco Country Band, New World Men, Mike DeWay, Kawandak, Gabrielle Destroismaisons, and the Patrick Norman and Nathalie Lord duo.

    Four morning shows for families

The Plains of Abraham and the EBB are known for their efforts to cater to all audiences, particularly families. Four shows will be performed Saturday mornings on July 19 and 26 and August 9 and 16, starting at 11 a.m. Kids will be delighted by Marimba and her thunderous djembe drum, the Gentle Giant’s barrel organ, Arthur the Adventurer, and Mr. Ben’s intern. To savour each moment to its fullest, some parents will be tempted to get a coffee and croissant at the Maison Smith Café, just a stone’s throw from the EBB.

Extended business hours of the Maison Smith Café at the central pavilion

The Maison Smith Café has been on the Plains of Abraham for nearly a year, during which its selection of beverages and food has further enhanced the EBB spectator experience. An aperitif on the central pavilion terrace, a picnic on the Plains with a lunchbox or a satisfying coffee in your hand—everything will be available for a heartwarming summer! This Maison Smith Café branch will be open for extended business hours during the shows.

  • MIL-OSI: MissionSquare Retirement Earns 2024 Cigna Healthy Workforce Designation™ for the second year in a row

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

Washington, D.C., March 26, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cigna Healthcare has selected MissionSquare, an organization that advocates for retirement security and financial well-being, as a recipient of their 2024 Gold Healthy Workforce Designation for demonstrating a strong commitment to improving the health and vitality of its employees through a workplace well-being program.

The award highlighted MissionSquare’s senior leadership for actively endorsing wellness initiatives. The program effectively promotes vitality on multiple fronts, employing various communication methods such as departmental and leadership meetings. To encourage participation, MissionSquare also provides incentives for engaging in wellness activities.

“We are proud to have achieved Cigna’s Gold designation, highlighting our work to promote employee health and well-being,” said Lisa Raff, Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer at MissionSquare. “This recognition reflects our ongoing efforts to provide activities, tools, and resources to help our employees thrive, and we’re honored to be acknowledged by Cigna.”

MissionSquare’s innovative well-being program takes a holistic approach to employee health and productivity. Going beyond standard paid time off (PTO), the comprehensive initiative emphasizes relaxation, personal days, and holidays, aiming to cultivate a healthier and more productive workforce. By prioritizing the overall health of their team, MissionSquare not only elevates their employees’ quality of life but also establishes a new industry standard.

Vitality is defined as the capacity to pursue life with health, strength and energy. It is both a driver and an outcome of health and work/life engagement, and Cigna Healthcare believes it is not only essential to individuals, but also a catalyst for business and community growth. Research conducted as part of the Evernorth Vitality Index confirms that those with higher vitality experience better mental and physical health along with higher levels of job satisfaction and performance. An opportunity remains for employers as less than one in five U.S. adults report having high levels of vitality. A workplace well-being program that takes a comprehensive approach to employee health can be critical in boosting vitality and building a workforce that experiences better overall health and job productivity.

“Higher vitality is linked to a more motivated, connected, and productive workforce,” said Kari Knight Stevens, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, The Cigna Group. “Employers that foster vitality will fuel a healthier workplace and drive business and economic growth. That’s why we’re proud to recognize employers for their efforts to prioritize multiple dimensions of wellness, build a culture of health, and boost employee engagement.”

The Cigna Healthy Workforce Designation evaluates organizations based on the core components of their well-being program, including leadership and culture, program foundations and execution, policies and accommodations, and additional areas. Organizations recognized with this designation set the standard of excellence for organizational health and vitality.

  • MIL-OSI: Trade Crypto with 100x Leverage and No KYC – Get Double Deposit Bonus and $50 Instantly on BexBack

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SINGAPORE, March 26, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — With Bitcoin’s price fluctuating below $100,000, many analysts predict a prolonged period of high volatility in the crypto market. Holding spot positions may struggle to generate short-term profits in such conditions. As a result, 100x leverage futures trading has become the preferred tool for seasoned investors looking to maximize potential gains in this volatile market. BexBack Exchange is ramping up its efforts to offer traders unmatched promotional packages. The platform now features a 100% deposit bonus, a $50 welcome bonus for new users, and 100x leverage on cryptocurrency trading, providing exceptional opportunities for investors.

What Is 100x Leverage and How Does It Work?

Simply put, 100x leverage allows you to open larger trading positions with less capital. For example:

Suppose the Bitcoin price is $100,000 that day, and you open a long contract with 1 BTC. After using 100x leverage, the transaction amount is equivalent to 100 BTC.

One day later, if the price rises to $105,000, your profit will be (105,000 – 100,000) * 100 BTC / 100,000 = 5 BTC, a yield of up to 500%.

    With BexBack’s deposit bonus

BexBack offers a 100% deposit bonus. If the initial investment is 2 BTC, the profit will increase to 10 BTC, and the return on investment will double to 1000%.

Note: Although leveraged trading can magnify profits, you also need to be wary of liquidation risks.

How Does the 100% Deposit Bonus Work?
The deposit bonus from BexBack cannot be directly withdrawn but can be used to open larger positions and increase potential profits. Additionally, during significant market fluctuations, the bonus can serve as extra margin, effectively reducing the risk of liquidation.

    About BexBack?

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Arrests – Crime series – Greater Darwin Region

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested five males in relation to a crime series across the Greater Darwin Region overnight.

Earlier in the night, a group of alleged offenders attended a residence on Westralia Street in Stuart Park, where they gained entry whilst armed via a dog door and subsequently stole two vehicles.

About 1:15am, police received reports of one of the vehicles ramming a residential gate in Moulden whilst brandishing a machete and hammer, allegedly threatening residents. A short time later the group attended a government facility where the group attempted to damage the gate and security screens.

The second stolen motor vehicle was recovered in Coconut Grove.

Around 3am, the group were observed by police CCTV operators within one of the stolen motor vehicles nearby a commercial premises in Fannie Bay. Strike Force Trident members were nearby and a pursuit was initiated after the group failed to follow police directions. The vehicle lost control a short time later and crashed into a power pole at the intersection of Nadpur Street and Dickward Drive. All of the offenders self-extracted from the vehicle and fled by foot into the mangroves whilst additional Strike Force Trident, Darwin general duties and Dog Operations Unit members set up a cordon.

Patrol Dog Fitzy tracked three of the offenders with the first located hiding up in a tree who surrendered to police without incident. The second was found lying in a pool of water in an attempt to conceal himself and again surrendered upon being discovered. The third was located hiding in thick vegetation and was apprehended by PD Fitzy.

Patrol Dog Drax deployed from the cordon in a different direction and located articles of clothing from the offenders and as Drax was indicating direction of travel the offender surrendered to a member of Strike Force Trident.

Patrol Dog Cheeko was also deployed and tracked the fifth offender into thick grassland where he was located hiding in the verge of the mangroves.

This is another great example of the effectiveness of the Dog Operations Unit in tracking and apprehending offenders involved in violent criminal offending and the close working relationship with SF Trident.

The five males arrested, aged 13, 14, 15, 16 and 19-years-old were all transported to the Royal Darwin Hospital for medical assessment.

Strike Force Trident have carriage of the investigations and charges are expected to follow.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Interview – Triple J Hack with Dave Marchese

    Source: Murray Darling Basin Authority

    E&OE TRANSCRIPT

PRESENTER DAVE MARCHESE: So, let’s get into this a bit more now with Anne Aly, the Youth Minister. Minister, thank you very much for joining us on Hack. The government hoping to pass its tax cuts for all Australians. The Opposition, calling them a cruel hoax, says Labor’s bribing voters. Are you bribing voters?

MINISTER ANNE ALY: No, these are tax cuts. And I think that every Australian out there who knows the value of the dollar, particularly for young people, for whom cost of living is a particularly acute issue that’s impacting on them every day, knows exactly what it means to have an extra dollar or two or three or four in your pay packet. These are pretty significant tax cuts. They build on the tax cuts that we already gave. And everyone will remember that if it was up to the Coalition, people earning under $45,000 —which is a lot of young people —would have got absolutely zero, zilch, nothing, nada in terms of tax cuts, according to their plan for tax cuts. So, they voted against the tax cuts today. Shows exactly where their heads are at when it comes to giving a little bit of cost-of-living relief.

MARCHESE: But is it fair everyone gets them? Like, do you think it’s fair that a nurse is going to be paying for a tax cut for someone like an MP, like a politician, you.

ALY: Well, we all pay tax according to what we earn. One of the important things to note is bringing the lower tax bracket down to 14,000. And I think, you know, I think most Australians understand the more you earn, the more tax you pay. So, if you’re going to get a tax cut, of course it’s going to be a bigger tax cut.

MARCHESE: But I guess people are asking, why not give more relief to those who need it, those who below the poverty line? Because there are some people out there saying, we don’t need this.

ALY: Whether it’s like the largest, you know, increase in rent assistance, 45 per cent increase in rent assistance. Whether it’s increasing JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY, Austudy. You know. The increases that we’ve made to the minimum wage, the increases that we’ve made in industrial relations to allow wages to increase. Whether it’s energy bill, rebates, medicines, cost of medicines, bringing the cost of medicines down, particularly also for young people, the HECS debt, saving them an average of $5,500. So, it’s not just the tax cuts in isolation. And I don’t think you could ever just give cost of living relief through one mechanism.

MARCHESE: You mentioned HECS, which is obviously something a lot of our listeners are really keen to hear reform on. You’re promising to cut a further 20 per cent off all student loan debts, but only if you’re re-elected. Why do people have to wait for this? Why do students have to wait? Because the government’s had three years.

ALY: I think it’s got to do with like setting everything up and everything like that. To be honest, you know, that’s more of a question for the Minister for Education around the timing of it as well…

MARCHESE: It does affect young people though, and you’re the Youth Minister.

ALY: It does, but the thing is. Yeah, yeah, you’re right there, Dave, I’ll give you that one. But look, I think the thing is that we’ve been doing a whole lot of reform across the whole education sector. Now when you get into government, there’s a whole lot of stuff that you have to do and you do them – you know, sometimes it’s incremental, sometimes you can do things straight away, sometimes you can’t do things straight away. I tell you what, if I had a magic wand or some kind of superpower, I would have loved to have done everything straight away.

MARCHESE: But do you understand why some voters might think, well, it is a bribe. It’s only if I vote that I get this relief that I’ve needed not just this year but for years.

ALY: I guess that is kind of reflective of also a more broader cynicism towards politics where every measure that we do is, you know, put into the basket of, oh, well that’s just a bribe or that’s just a bribe…

MARCHESE: Or is it people just saying you’ve had three years and why can’t we see these changes in your term of government? Is it time to give someone else a go?

ALY: Well, if they give someone else a go, that someone else is Peter Dutton. I can guarantee you he’s not going to give you any cuts off your HECS debt. I can guarantee you he’s not going to give you any cost-of-living relief. I can guarantee you he’s not going to fix the indexation or give you a fee-free TAFE. In fact, they voted against all of those things.

MARCHESE: Alright, this is Hack. I’m Dave Marchese getting into the details of the budget with Youth Minister Anne Aly. Hearing from you on the text line. Someone says doing better than the coalition is not a flex. Someone else ‘This is so disappointing and disgusting, never ever voting Labor or Liberal again. And I know a lot of young people doing the same.’ Minister hearing loud and clear from the Hack audience, a lot of them asking about the long term because it is deficits as far as the eye can see. Young Australians are going to be the ones dealing with all this. Is there any plan for how we’re going to pay all of this off in the years ahead?

ALY: Yeah, you know, I hear the term deficit and surplus. I’ll remind everyone that we did deliver two surpluses in a row and that there are a lot of global headwinds that contribute to the deficits and that the Treasurer has been very upfront in saying that we will be looking at deficits largely due to a lot of global kind of economic trends and activities. I’m not, you know, for the young people that I speak to, Dave, and I do speak to a lot of young people, not just in this portfolio. The starkest and most acute issue is what is impacting on their life currently and that is cost-of-living and that is being able to have the kind of life that they see that their parents had.

MARCHESE: But that won’t be possible if there’s all this debt that has to be paid off later. Like Australia is spending $50 billion more per year than we’re collecting in tax. Shouldn’t we be seeing some sort of structural changes in the budget that will paint a picture of how this is all going to be dealt with in the future, how young Australians are going to deal with this.

ALY: Well, the Treasurer has talked about how we’ve made some structural reform and structural repair of the budget too in terms of banking revenue back into the budget and continuing to bank revenue into the budget as well. What I think I would say is that, you know, in some senses deficit is, as the Treasurer said, unavoidable when there are global kind of economic headwinds at play that we have little control over. The role of a government, a responsible government, particularly at a time where there is high inflation and where people are facing real cost of living pressures, is to really ensure that we give that cost of living, ease those cost-of-living pressures without putting upward pressure on inflation. And we’ve managed to bring inflation down. I think one of the things that you’re talking about here is, you know, long term vision. I would say to you, and I would probably agree with the point that it’s when you have three year terms in government which actually effectively work out to about two and a half years of actually being able to work in your role as a Minister or as a representative in Parliament, it’s very difficult to instigate and put into place really long term reform.

MARCHESE: But that is the system that we have, and we’ve had for a long time. And I mean, some of the concern here that we’re hearing from listeners. You’ve got someone on Hack’s Instagram now, Danny, that says, you know, ‘This isn’t a budget, it’s a slap in the face’, is that people think that they’ve been promised something that hasn’t been delivered. That when Anthony Albanese was pitching to be in government at the last election, he was saying nobody would be left behind. But the reality is now we’ve had the biggest fall in disposable income in the OECD over the past two years, that people are feeling worse off than they were a few years ago at that last election. How do you convince young Australians to vote for you with all of that in mind?

ALY: Oh, we’re not sugarcoating anything here, Dave. We know that people are doing it tough. We know that. But I would say to young people and indeed, you know, all Australians, have a look at what we have done. Have a look at what we have managed to achieve in a situation where many, many other countries have been unable to achieve what we have. And, you know, it was, Peter Dutton said it the other day, he said judge people by their actions. And I would say if you were to judge the Labor government over the last two and a half years by the actions that we have taken to stave off for Australians some of the most egregious and worst impacts that we could have had, with global inflation being what it is, with the global economic headwinds being what they are, I think that if you looked at what we’ve done I think we have a good story to tell. By no means does that mean everything is hunky dory and everyone’s doing, you know, ‘beauty one mate’. But it does mean that we are conscious of people doing it tough. There’s more work to do.

MARCHESE: I didn’t expect you to quote Peter Dutton in your pitch to voters, Anne Aly. But look, thank you very much for joining us. Youth Minister Anne Aly appreciate you coming on Hack.

ALY: Thaks so much Dave. Appreciate you having me on.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Scientists from the National Research University Higher School of Economics – Saint Petersburg will begin to teach artificial intelligence emotions

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: State University Higher School of Economics – State University Higher School of Economics –

In 2025, the Natural Language Laboratory of the National Research University Higher School of Economics — St. Petersburg, under the leadership of Dmitry Ryumin, a candidate of technical sciences, will develop technologies that will allow AI not only to understand words, but also to recognize emotions, gestures, and personal characteristics of a person. Initially, the department focused exclusively on the analysis of text data. However, according to Dmitry Ryumin, now only one modality is of little interest to anyone. “Look at the current developments — everyone wants to record something with their voice, and upload a picture, and analyze a video, and work with text,” the scientist comments.

Dmitry Ryumin came to the HSE in St. Petersburg from the St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where he holds the position of senior research fellow at the Laboratory of Speech and Multimodal Interfaces. “I was invited for the SP4 project (strategic projects), and then offered to head the Natural Language Laboratory. Today, ten people work in the laboratory – from undergraduate students to candidates of science. I would like to expand the team to 20-30 people, so that the laboratory could be divided into related groups. For example, one group deals with avatars, another – with emotions, and then they can be combined to create emotional avatars,” the head shares his plans.

Why do neural networks need emotions?

Under the leadership of Dmitry Ryumin, the HSE-St. Petersburg laboratory will focus on several promising areas related to multimodal technologies.

“Imagine a system that simultaneously analyzes a person’s voice, facial expressions, and gestures. Assessing a person’s personal qualities and recognizing emotions can be useful, for example, when hiring,” the scientist explains. The technology allows determining how well a job seeker fits the job. “We record an interview with a candidate and analyze not only the content of the answers, but also how they speak, what emotions they show, how they gesture. This gives a more complete picture of a person. For example, openness, sociability, and resistance to stress are important for a manager. The system can analyze whether a candidate’s voice trembles, how clearly they express their thoughts, and provide a description to help HR in recruiting personnel,” comments Dmitry Ryumin.

Another promising area is personalized advertising. The neural network will be able to evaluate the user’s emotional state and tailor contextual ads to him. If he is sad, it will show one type of content, if he is happy, another.

Emotional avatar technologies will find application in virtual spaces and conferences. “Last year, large international conferences created virtual spaces where participants who could not come physically entered virtual rooms through their avatars. If these avatars are made more emotional, with realistic facial expressions and gestures, the interaction experience will be much better,” the scientist notes. There is also an entertainment direction – movement transfer. “Imagine: I upload a short video in which I am simply in a room and make ordinary movements. The system analyzes and creates a digital model of me. Then I upload another video, where, for example, a professional dancer performs a break dance. The technology replaces the dancer with me, and the result is a realistic video where I masterfully dance a break dance. Similar technologies are actively developing around the world. Large research centers and companies offer various approaches to solving this problem,” explains Dmitry Ryumin.

There is potential for using multimodal artificial intelligence in the field of psychological support. “We can try to recognize not only short-term emotions, but also long-term conditions, such as anxiety disorders, emotional burnout, or cognitive impairment. Of course, there are ethical issues and problems with obtaining data for training systems, but the direction is very promising,” says Dmitry Ryumin.

Another area of development is voice assistants for smart homes. According to the scientist, bimodal recognition is most relevant in this case, since many people would prefer to maintain the privacy of their living space and would not want to connect cameras. “The analysis will be carried out mainly based on speech, which we can convert into text. This approach allows us to work with two modalities simultaneously. I have several voice assistants installed at home. And I regularly encounter a problem: the system does not always correctly interpret speech commands. Sometimes, in one minute, the assistant can change its “mood” or manner of response several times, which, frankly speaking, is irritating,” the head of the laboratory summarizes.

The task of researchers who train large language and generative models is to make the decision-making process of a neural network transparent. According to the head of the laboratory, explainable artificial intelligence is a direction that has been actively developing in recent years.

By receiving a decoding of the model’s “train of thought”, any professional can critically evaluate the result obtained: agree with something, question something. This creates an opportunity for feedback and objectivity in decision-making.

How to teach a neural network to recognize emotions?

Modern research into multimodal models requires powerful technology, cross-disciplinary specialists and large amounts of data.

Computing base. Dmitry Ryumin has been working with neural networks for more than eight years. According to him, the main emphasis used to be on RAM and the processor, but today the central role is played by graphic accelerators (GPU). The power and number of available video cards directly determine the speed of training neural network models, the number of possible experiments and the volume of processed data.

“Therefore, it is important not only to conduct research, but also to develop the computing base. For example, supercomputer of the Higher School of Economics we see how these resources affect the quality of scientific experiments. It is especially valuable to involve students, starting from the undergraduate level, in working with such systems — to teach them how to interact with high-performance computing clusters, to give them the opportunity to train models of varying complexity. This creates a continuous educational chain: students who have mastered working with advanced equipment can subsequently be involved in research work in laboratories.”

Working with databases. Teaching large language models to recognize and reproduce emotions is a complex, multi-stage process. And neural networks are now taking part in it. For example, open AIs help automate data collection and annotation: they quickly collect texts with a given emotional coloring. “This radically reduces labor costs compared to traditional manual tagging, when you had to hire people for painstaking work. A general trend is noticeable: many research teams are trying to adapt models to work with emotions. Despite the fact that such attempts are not yet ideal and the models continue to make mistakes, the direction is actively developing,” says Dmitry Ryumin.

Cross-disciplinary research. Modern research in the field of multimodal models involves interdisciplinarity. Thus, Dmitry Ryumin is now launching a joint project within the framework of the “Fundamental Research Program” with Laboratory of Social and Cognitive Informatics in modeling cognitive and affective processes and human states. “By combining our departments and laboratories, we are creating a strong interdisciplinary platform for the development of affective technologies. Such cooperation is extremely valuable: our fellow sociologists, although not specializing directly in training neural network models, including large language and generative models, bring deep theoretical expertise. Their knowledge becomes a fundamental basis for training our models,” says the head of the Natural Language Laboratory.

The Natural Language Laboratory welcomes undergraduate and graduate students who are knowledgeable in programming, linguistics, psychology, and sociology.

Natural Language Laboratory is an interdisciplinary researcher in machine learning and natural language processing, studying fundamental properties of language, computation, and learning that can contribute to a better understanding of language in general.

In the six months since the opening of the Moscow-on-the-Wave fish market in the Mitino district, almost half a million people have visited it. They bought fresh products, participated in tastings and watched culinary shows, reported Natalia Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow.

The most popular products were lightly salted herring, live carp, seaweed salad and pink salmon caviar.

The market has repeatedly hosted city festivals such as “Golden Autumn”, “Journey to Christmas”, “Chinese New Year in Moscow” and “Moscow Maslenitsa”. For each of them, the site was decorated in a corporate style, themed events were held, and promotions were launched. Thus, at Maslenitsa, you could try pancakes with a variety of seafood fillings.

“The first modern fish market opened in the capital in the fall of 2023. Now there are two of them – in the Mitino and Kosino-Ukhtomsky districts. The new format is very popular with Muscovites and tourists. Over the past year and a half, two million people have visited the sites. Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

    Press Release
Deutsches Forschungsnetz selects Nokia to accelerate scientific research with a high-capacity green IP network

    • IP network upgrade allows Deutsches Forschungsnetz e.V. (DFN) to provide seamless access to critical resources and facilitate faster and more efficient collaboration.
    • Expansion delivers interface speeds up to 800 Gigabits per second to meet future capacity growth
    • Modernized IP core network offers higher bandwidth, increased capacity and up to 75% reduced power consumption

    26 March 2025
Espoo, Finland – Nokia has renewed and expanded DFN’s, the German National Research and Education Network, IP core router network in Germany. Nokia’s IP router solution will give DFN access to higher bandwidth, increased network capacity and reduce power consumption in its network up to 75%.

The DFN Association offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to meet the evolving needs of the scientific research community. By providing high-throughput connectivity, DFN ensures that researchers can seamlessly access critical resources, such as supercomputers and large-scale data repositories, enabling faster and more efficient collaboration. This is particularly vital for projects that require extensive data transfers or collaboration with international research institutions.

The DFN Association operates the national research and education network and develops the communication infrastructure for universities, research institutes and R&D companies across Germany, connecting approximately 850 locations throughout the country. It is considered one of the largest and most powerful non-commercial networks in the world with a total length of 10,250 km of optical fiber in the backbone and a multi-terabit core network spanning 65 core network locations.

DFN selected Nokia to swap out existing equipment from another vendor and provide IP core network routers to ten locations in Germany. This upgrade will increase connectivity from DFN’s current 100G interfaces to 400G, with runway to further upgrade to 800G as demand warrants. Nokia deployed its scalable 7750 Service Routers which are based on the company’s FP5 routing silicon.

The deal includes a full suite of professional services, training and technical consultancy throughout the deployment and operation. All existing DFN applications were successfully migrated into Nokia’s service routers ahead of deployment.

“Nokia’s solution offered the performance and scalability we need for our IP core network in Germany, and the results speak for themselves. With the implemented solution, we are already equipped for 800G and can now further scale and expand our services according to the requirements of our participants in research and higher education in Germany. We are very satisfied with the collaboration with Nokia and the results achieved so far,” said Dr. Stefan Piger, Head of Network and Communication Services at DFN.

“As the developer and operator of the communications infrastructure linking universities and research institutes in Germany, DFN plays a vital role in fostering growth for the broader scientific community across the country. This collaboration with world class research and education network underscores the value of our IP routing technology in providing a robust, agile and adaptable core network with the headroom to scale efficiently into the future”, added Matthieu Bourguignon, Senior Vice President, Europe, Network Infrastructure at Nokia.
