  • MIL-OSI China: HK release soars to top of national box office

Source: China State Council Information Office 3

Cesium Fallout, a disaster film starring icons Andy Lau and Bai Yu, overtook Hollywood blockbuster Venom: The Last Dance to become the country’s new box-office champion on Monday.

As of Nov 4, the feature directed by Anthony Pun has grossed around 90 million yuan ($12.7 million) since its debut on Friday, according to the movie information live tracer, Beacon.

Set in Hong Kong, it follows two parallel storylines about teams of specialists and firefighters as they try to prevent a doomsday disaster following an accident that leads to the release of Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope.

During the film’s Beijing premiere last week, executive producer Bill Kong, revealed that his inspiration for the film stemmed from reports about the illegal transshipment of waste from other countries.

He consulted environmental experts, who disclosed that some foreign companies previously dumped electronic waste overseas to reduce recycling expenses, with a portion being directed to Hong Kong.

He emphasized the danger posed by electronic waste, highlighting the potential environmental harm if the substances they contain leached into the soil, contaminating water sources, and expressed the hope that the film would increase public awareness of the issue.

  • MIL-Evening Report: 5 Indian films from the 2024 Adelaide Film Festival that blew me away

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Yanyan Hong, PhD Candidate in Communication and Media Studies, University of Adelaide

In The Belly of a Tiger/IMDB

This year’s Adelaide Film Festival (AFF2024) had something truly exciting laying in wait: a spotlight on Indian cinema.

While many people are familiar with Bollywood, most don’t know about the vast film industry that exists beyond it. And this is no small market; India is currently the most populated country in the world.

This year’s festival delivered a variety of Indian films from regions and directors that remain underrepresented. From award-winning tales, to a poetic nature documentary, to a sweet coming-of-age story from the North East, the program promises to challenge and expand our understanding of what Indian cinema can offer.

Of all the films I saw, these five spoke to me the most.

    All We Imagine As Light

Payal Kapadia’s Cannes Grand Prix winner, All We Imagine as Light, was the film that I’d most looked forward to – and it turned out to be as dreamlike as its title promised.

It’s an ode to the city of Mumbai, also known as India’s “dream-making factory” (and where Bollywood is based). Mumbai is where Indians from all states and of all languages come to fulfil their dreams.

The story follows three female nurses, Prabha (Kani Kusruti), Anu (Divya Prabha) and Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), who come to Mumbai looking for a better life. Yet they find themselves struggling to belong in a city that refuses to embrace them.

As Kapadia explains: “The film is about not being able to see a way out when one is surrounded by darkness […] that hope doesn’t exist if you have never seen it.”

Kapadia’s storytelling brings a kind of realism rarely seen in popular Indian cinema – not through larger-than-life spectacle or the resplendent city skyline, but through the quiet intimacy of shared apartments, poetry booklets, dinner dates, and small joys and defeats. It is simply soulful.

The film blends themes of female solidarity and friendship with heavier topics such as religious differences, migrant struggles, language barriers and class divides – yet it feels as gentle as rain on skin.

While some have critiqued the film for being too slow (and I admittedly felt this at times), this is exactly how Kapadia managed to turn a city with more than 21 million people into a place that feels completely lonely.

    Second Chance

Unlike the vibrant image of India we’re so used to – full of colour, song and lively dances – Subhadra Mahajan’s black-and-white film Second Chance is nothing short of breathtaking.

Set in the snowy peaks of Himachal Pradesh, the film follows 25-year-old Nia (Dheera Johnson) as she retreats to her family’s Himalayan holiday home after a painful breakup and the emotional toll of taking abortion pills. Mahajan captures the stark, quiet beauty of the Himalayan landscape, where time slows down and silence seems to heal.

The film is shot among the snow-covered Himalayan mountains.
    Adelaide Film Festival

There, she finds unexpected companions through Bhemi and Sunny. Bhemi, the gentle 70-year-old mother-in-law of the home’s caretaker, is played with a captivating authenticity by Thakra Devi, a local resident and non-professional actress. Sunny (Kanav Thakur) is Bhemi’s playful and curious 8-year-old grandson.

At the top of the world, Second Chance crafts a beautiful and intimate space where we are invited to see that there’s always another chance to find oneself – a chance as infinite and expansive as the snow-capped peaks themselves.

    Nocturnes

It’s rare to see films such as Second Chance, which are made in the Himalayas. But it’s even rarer to see an Indian nature documentary such as Nocturnes. The film follows a scientist named Mansi and her indigenous assistants as they chase down thousands of Himalayan moths (particularly Hawk moths).

Directed by Anirban Dutta and Anupama Srinivasan, Nocturnes captures the hypnotic rhythms of field study (something that particularly resonates with me as a researcher).

Fluttering wings and insect trills create a serene soundscape. The close-ups of the moths – their textures, patterns and slight vibrating movements – are fascinating to observe – as the the wider shots of the scientists’ glowing setup in the darkened forest, which drew me in like a moth to light.

Nocturnes is a thoughtful, meditative film that reminds us of how our destruction of the climate can impact these ancient residents of Earth. As the voiceover reminds is, “we most likely cannot survive what the moths have been through.”

    Boong

Right from the opening scene, Boong pulled me in with unexpected laughs. The titular character Boong (Gugun Kipgen) is a schoolboy who, along with his best friend Raju (Angom Sanamatum), embarks on a risky journey along India’s militarised eastern border to bring Boong’s absent father back home.

In one scene, the playful prankster, Boong, aims his slingshot at his school’s entryway sign.
    IMDB

As they make their way, we’re treated to views from Manipur, India’s North East state near Myanmar, which we rarely see in mainstream Indian cinema. Boong itself tips its hat to Bollywood a few times, such as when Raju shows his excitement upon hearing the song Lungi Dance from the Bollywood blockbuster Chennai Express (2013), or when the the chief villager’s secret home cinema is adorned with Hindi film posters.

Director Lakshmipriya Devi does a fantastic job showcasing the region’s vibrant yet complex culture. All the while, she highlights some surprising lesser-known facts, such as how Hindi films were banned in Manipur for years in the name of protecting local culture, language and the regional film industry.

While Manipur’s cinematic potential is still largely untapped, Boong is a brilliant step.

In the Belly of a Tiger

Of the 23 films I saw at AFF2024, In the Belly of a Tiger was a precious gem that stayed with me.

This multinational production (which just won the festival’s Feature Fiction Award) tells a heart-wrenching story of an elderly and desperately poor couple faced with an impossible choice: which one of them will go into the forest to be eaten by a tiger so the other can receive government compensation?

It’s a deeply spiritual and painfully pragmatic exploration of power, sacrifice, love and hope.

The symbolism of the film’s poster hints at its larger themes. Just as Hindu mythology posits the universe emerged from Lord Vishnu’s navel, unfolding like the petals of a lotus, we see how fate, too, blossoms unevenly.

The film’s poster signposts some of its larger themes.
    IMDB

In the film, a poor family in a remote village longs for a better life in the next world, holding tightly to memories of young, innocent love.

Shooting in Hindi, and featuring mostly non-professional actors, In the Belly of a Tiger is both authentic and ambitious. Indian director and cinematographer Jatla Siddhartha collaborated with some of the biggest names in cinema to bring the story to life, including multiple Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty (who also worked on Slumdog Millionaire).

The music is composed by Japan’s Umebayashi Shigeru, known for his work on Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love (2000) and The Grandmaster (2013). Shigeru’s melodies bring an emotional and magical tone to what is, at its heart, a truly Indian story.

    More dreams to share

The films I’ve highlighted here represent some of the most exciting and thought-provoking works coming out of India today.

While the Mumbai-based Bollywood industry is undeniably a huge part of Indian culture, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. These films paint a far richer and more diverse portrait of India, its people, its struggles and its beauty.

They also showcase a glorious future for Indian cinema – one which promises to carry the dreams of a nation eager to share its stories with the world.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Yoga and fitrock: the “Sports Weekend” project classes will help you cope with stress

    Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

Stress has a negative impact on health: it leads to increased blood pressure, decreased immune defense, and cardiovascular diseases. On Stress Awareness Day, which is celebrated on the first Wednesday of November, residents were told how to make the body more stress-resistant.

One of the most effective means is to lead a healthy lifestyle. It is worth giving up bad habits, eating a balanced diet, and also doing physical exercise.

The training sessions of the “Sports Weekend” project of the capital will help relieve nervous tension and restore mental balance. Department of SportsMuscovites can regularly attend free classes in classical and hot yoga, fitness boxing and fitrock in unusual places in the city under the guidance of professional trainers.

For example, yoga can help you restore strength, health, and balance—immerse yourself in an atmosphere of peace of mind. Such exercises can tone muscles, strengthen joints, relieve back and neck pain, improve posture, and cope with stress.

During hot yoga training, joints and muscles warm up faster and become more mobile. First comes a warm-up with pumping jumps, and then relaxation with deep breathing in a hot room at a temperature of 36 degrees and humidity of 40 percent. Even beginners will master the technique.

Fitness boxing is a group exercise that consists of a combination of punches and kicks on a punching bag at a fast pace. The training takes place to energetic music, allowing you to increase your endurance, build muscle and develop self-defense skills.

Fitrock combines strength and functional exercises, elements of classical aerobics, and dance moves. Drumstick training is performed to rock hits of all time. Scientific studies have proven that drumming reduces stress, strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, and helps with social-emotional disorders.

You can sign up for a class you like, find out detailed information about the conditions and locations of training, and also see the schedule on the project website “Sports Weekend”.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: “Better Than Yesterday.” Stories of Moscow Creative Universities Graduates

    Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

Just recently, these young artists were still studying: they went to rehearsals, wrote notes, took exams and began to seriously join the world of art. Today, they are members of the most famous creative groups in the country, they go out on the big stage – and the audience is gradually learning their names. The stories of an opera soloist, a jazz musician, an actor and an actress – in the material mos.ru.

Janis Shklyaev: “The main thing is not to lose the fire”

Graduate of the Moscow State Institute of Music named after A.G. Schnittke

    — I liked singing since childhood, and that’s when I started going on stage. After school, I entered the Krasnoyarsk College of Arts named after P.I. Ivanov-Radkevich, where my passion for singing only grew stronger. Then, however, I had to take a break in my career: I was called up for military service. But music accompanied me there too: I joined the Academic Song and Dance Ensemble of the Russian Army named after A.V. Alexandrov.

Then I returned to Krasnoyarsk, got a job in the Siberian Male Choir, completed one course in the vocal department of the Siberian State Institute of Arts named after D.A. Hvorostovsky. Then I decided to move to the capital – I entered the Moscow State Institute of Music named after A.G. Schnittke. I was enrolled in the class of People’s Artist of Russia Mikhail Kizin.

After graduating from the institute, I joined the Chelyabinsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after M.I. Glinka. I love all my roles, but especially the part of Lensky from “Eugene Onegin”. From a technical point of view, it poses challenges that are interesting to solve, and from an emotional point of view, it helps to reveal my temperament. By the way, I now see my hero completely differently, I find something in him that I had not noticed before. At school, when I read the novel, the image of Lensky was more lyrical for me, but now I feel his tragedy, his inner impulses. And in the future, I would like to perform the part of Maurice from the opera “Adriana Lecouvreur” by composer Francesco Cilea.

The most pleasant thing about my work is to see the audience in the hall, to give them emotions, to awaken feelings, to let them experience the work together with me. I would advise those who have decided to study this profession not to lose the fire and desire to do it. Of course, the support of loved ones is also important. I was lucky: on my way I met understanding, knowledgeable teachers who believed in my strength, helped me overcome difficulties. I am especially grateful to all of them – as well as to my parents.

Konstantin Boytsov: “We felt like rock stars”

    Graduate of the Jazz Academy

    — Like many children, I went to music school — more for general development. My parents couldn’t even imagine that I would seriously want to become a musician. Once I even decided to quit music school, but then I accidentally saw a concert of jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis on the Internet. I watched it over and over again, and each time I was captivated by these melodies. Then I fell in love with the music of Canadian bassist Alain Caron and saxophonist Michael Brecker. Jazz became real magic for me — I realized that I wanted to learn to improvise myself. When I told my parents about this, they supported me: my mother helped me find a teacher to prepare me for admission and bought me my first saxophone. Then I realized that talent is not the main component of success, work, self-development and discipline are much more important.

And at the age of 16, I got to a concert by Igor Butman. Igor Mikhailovich became a source of inspiration for me – it seems, forever. And I am very happy that now I work in the Moscow Jazz Orchestra under his direction. Of course, it is not always easy: sometimes tours, flights and relocations are difficult, but it pays off with a huge number of stories, emotions that we get while traveling. And also with a range of feelings when we see the enthusiastic faces of people in the audience. This is the most valuable and precious thing in our work.

I remember with particular warmth a concert in St. Petersburg, in which I participated when I was still a first-year student at the Academy. We were invited to an orchestral battle, there were almost 40 people on one stage. We played swing from the 1920s and 1930s, and the audience danced right in front of us. The atmosphere was incredible, we felt like real rock stars from the jazz world.

Nelly Khaperskaya: “Acting is like a sport”

    Oleg Tabakov’s Theatre School

    — I come from a circus family, I spent my entire childhood in the arena and behind the scenes of the circus. Therefore, there were never any doubts about choosing a creative profession. Of course, everyone thought that I would follow in my parents’ footsteps, but completely by chance I passed the casting at Konstantin Khabensky’s studio, and there I realized that I wanted to connect my life with Oleg Tabakov’s School, and then with his theater. True, at first my dad did not want me to move away from the circus. But it seems to me that the circus and theater coexist quite closely: the skills I acquired in childhood were very useful in the acting profession.

As a result, I entered the Oleg Tabakov School. I consider Vladimir Mashkov my main teacher, he is my creative dad. He gave me life in this profession, opened the doors to it. For me, Vladimir Lvovich is an example, I consider him a genius. This applies not only to the profession: he will always help those who need it. You want to follow him further and conquer new heights.

I realized that acting is like a sport. You always have to work, constantly improve your knowledge and skills, constantly be in training and rehearsals. Every day you have to become better than you were yesterday. It’s not easy. For the guys who are just thinking about whether to connect their lives with the acting profession or not, I would say this: if you are passionate about it, then difficulties are pleasant.

Now I work at the Oleg Tabakov Theatre. Among the productions I participate in is “Matrosskaya Tishina”, where I play Tanya. This is a legendary performance that Oleg Pavlovich himself staged. I go on stage with my teachers. Of course, they help a lot with advice, as always. In fact, we have been on the professional stage since our first years – this is a feature of the Oleg Tabakov Theatre School. Even when I was a student, I got roles in “Passions for Bumbarash”, “Fight”, “My Fair Lady”, “The Elder Son”, “Atom of the Sun”, “Heirs” and, actually, in “Matrosskaya Tishina”. Not all of these performances are in the repertoire now, but I sincerely love each role.

Shvartsy from Tulchin. The story of Oleg Tabakov’s most anticipated performance

Egor Khokhlov: “I understood where my place is”

    Oleg Tabakov’s Theatre School

    — When I entered the Oleg Tabakov Theatre School, I doubted my decision to become an actor, I didn’t fully understand who I wanted to be. But I saw the teachers, looked at the other guys — and suddenly I understood where my place was. A happy accident, it can happen to anyone. The main thing is to be attentive to yourself and feel it.

At first, I was worried about how my family would react to my decision: no one is connected with the theater. Besides, it is a profession with zero guarantees, you can fail in it at all – there are hundreds, thousands of such examples. But my parents were understanding, very supportive, believed in me. I am also grateful to my teachers – first of all, Vladimir Mashkov, Alena Lapteva, Vitaly Egorov. Over the five years of study, they did a lot for us. They said that you need to study and improve constantly. To evoke emotions in the viewer, to push them to certain thoughts – all this requires colossal efforts.

I started performing on stage at the Oleg Tabakov Theatre when I was still a student. This idea belongs to Oleg Pavlovich: he believed that students should see how professional artists work – this is the only way to pass on the profession to the young. My senior colleagues and teachers helped with advice and continue to do so. Now I am involved in several performances, including “Bumbarash Passion”, “Deadly Act” and “The Hunt to Live”.

I think the most important piece of advice I can give to aspiring actors is this: Don’t be afraid to jump into every situation that comes your way. The stage is hard, and you have to be prepared for anything. Take every chance you get, try to imitate the behavior of different people. And one more thing that’s very important: Don’t be shy.

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region

    LCQ2: Clansmen Culture Promotion Scheme
    LCQ2: Clansmen Culture Promotion Scheme
    ***************************************

Following is a question by the Hon Jimmy Ng and a reply by the Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Miss Alice Mak, in the Legislative Council today (November 6): Question:      The Government has earlier on launched a three-year “Clansmen Culture Promotion Scheme” (the Scheme), under which a total funding of $30‍ million has been earmarked for application by clansmen associations to organise activities promoting hometown culture. It has been reported that the Scheme has received overwhelming responses, and that the Home Affairs Department received 213 applications from 110 clansmen associations this year, of which 39 were approved with funding of about $10 million. In this connection, will the Government inform this Council: (1) of the respective themes of the funded hometown cultural activities; whether it has estimated the number of participants in such activities; if so, of the details; (2) whether it will expand the scope of the subsidy under the Scheme to assist clansmen associations in organizing more activities of different types, so as to promote the vast and profound Chinese culture and enhance public understanding of the latest developments in various provinces and municipalities of the motherland; and (3) whether it will extend the implementation period of the Scheme or even regularise it; whether it will introduce more schemes to help promote clansmen culture; if so, of the details; if not, the reasons for that? Reply:President,      Clansmen associations have a long history in Hong Kong, most of which were established by their ancestors who came to Hong Kong in the early days for development and then settled in, with a view to uniting and serving their fellow clansmen as well as promoting solidarity and mutual support amongst them. The associations play a bridging role between their fellow clansmen and hometowns. They have brought the culture of their hometowns to Hong Kong, enabling different hometown cultures and customs to converge here and make Hong Kong unique.      Being steadfast patriots supporting the country and Hong Kong, clansmen associations have effectively forged cohesion among clansmen who love the country, Hong Kong and their hometowns through their vast social networks and unique geographical backgrounds. They provide resolute support for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government in implementing “one country, two systems”, promoting the development of Hong Kong, and fostering social harmony and stability. They are reliable and staunch partners of the HKSAR Government and a constructive force driving Hong Kong’s development.      Clansmen associations have been supporting the work of the HKSAR Government in many areas. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, clansmen associations volunteered to donate supplies and mobilise fellow clansmen to collaborate with the Government in fighting the epidemic. On the improvement of the electoral system of Hong Kong, clansmen associations’ active support and participation helped ensure that the principle of “patriots administering Hong Kong” was fully implemented.  Clansmen associations also strongly supported the improving of district governance, the election of District Councils and the formation of Care Teams.      In terms of activities, clansmen associations have been organising various clansmen cultural promotion, caring and exchange programmes to promote exchanges and co-operation between Hong Kong and the Mainland in different aspects, with a view to enhancing mutual communication and deepening the friendship between the people as well as fostering the inheritance of fine traditional Chinese culture.      To deepen the public’s understanding of and sense of belonging to their hometowns, thereby fostering the spirit of loving the motherland, Hong Kong and their hometowns; as well as to recognise and strengthen the longstanding efforts of patriotic clansmen associations, the Chief Executive announced in his 2023 Policy Address the launch of the “Clansmen Culture Promotion Scheme” (the Scheme) for a period of three years. In the three consecutive financial years starting from 2024-25, an annual provision of $10 million (i.e. totalling $30 million) is earmarked for application by clansmen associations to subsidise their organisation of activities to promote and preserve hometown culture, unite clansmen in Hong Kong and facilitate exchanges between Hong Kong and the Mainland.      The Home Affairs Department (HAD) began accepting funding applications for the 2024-25 financial year under the Scheme in April this year. Within a one-month application period, a total of 213 applications from 110 clansmen associations were received. By the end of May, the HAD completed the vetting process and approved 39 applications, taking into consideration factors such as the reputation and experience of the applying organisations, as well as the content of their activities and plans. The total amount of subsidy granted is about $10 million.      In response to the questions raised by the Hon Jimmy Ng, the replies are as follows: (1) A wide variety of projects were approved in the first year of the Scheme, which included activities for promoting hometown culture and heritage (e.g. hometown markets, cultural festivals), uniting fellow clansmen in Hong Kong (e.g. home visits, organising volunteer work) and promoting exchanges between Hong Kong and the Mainland (e.g. parent-child heritage tours, youth exchange programmes). From early June to end-October 2024, a total of 20 approved projects were completed, with over 220 000 people participated.      For specific events, for example, the “Clansmen Associations Hometown Market Carnival” jointly organised by 28 clansmen associations at Victoria Park for five days in early June attracted approximately 200 000 visitors. The “Min-Kong Youth Maritime Silk Road Cultural Exchange Tour” and the “Hong Kong-Macao Youth Zhejiang Tour” organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Fujian Associations and the United Zhejiang Residents Associations respectively in July were participated by a total of about 1 000 young people to promote youth exchange between Hong Kong and the Mainland. The Federation of HK Guangxi Community Organisations and the Hong Kong Federation of Hainan Community Organisations held the “Cultural Celebration for National Day” and the “Hainan and Kowloon City Brilliant Night” carnivals in September respectively, engaging over 10 000 participants in promoting hometown culture. In September and October, the Federation of Hong Kong Beijing Organisations organised the “Thank You for Being There – Hand in Hand to Warm Hearts” event, where volunteer teams formed by its fellow clansmen visited grassroots families of about 1 000 people. From September to December, the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organisations is conducting the “Guangdong Intangible Cultural Heritage in Schools” programme to host cultural workshops in various primary and secondary schools. It is expected that nearly 1 000 students and parents will be engaged. (2) The scope of projects subsidised under the Scheme is wide. Any locally registered clansmen associations with good reputation and track record; which have all along been committed to promoting hometown culture and fostering exchanges between Hong Kong and hometowns in order to promote the spirit of loving the motherland, Hong Kong and hometowns; and with experience in organising relevant activities, are eligible to apply for subsidy under the Scheme. The subsidy can be used for funding various types of relevant activities such as those for promoting and preserving hometown culture, uniting clansmen in Hong Kong and facilitating exchanges between Hong Kong and the Mainland. There is no restriction on the form of the activities, as long as they are non-profit-making in nature and in line with the objectives of the Scheme.      Apart from the Scheme, the HAD and the 18 District Offices have been collaborating with clansmen associations and various district organisations from time to time to foster community building, while promoting Chinese culture and enhancing public understanding of the country. For example, the HAD co-organised with 28 provincial clansmen associations the “Bazaar Carnival in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China” (the Bazaar) from October 25 to 29 at Sha Tin Park. It provided a total of 75 market stalls offering a wide variety of local snacks, specialties and traditional crafts, showcasing the unique culinary and cultural traditions of different provinces and cities. The Bazaar also staged diverse cultural performances such as traditional ethnic dances, acrobatics, folk songs, as well as free screenings of patriotic-themed movies and cultural introductions of various provinces, enabling the public to experience the diverse and colourful Chinese culture from all corners of the country. The five-day Bazaar attracted about 180 000 visitors, with the value of total sales estimated to be more than $4.6 million, highlighting the Government’s close collaboration with clansmen associations to further promote patriotic sentiments and love for Hong Kong in the community.      Besides, clansmen associations also apply for funding support through the on-going Community Involvement Programme implemented by the HAD to organise different projects such as festivals with local characteristics, hometown cultural carnivals and traditional cultural performances to promote district harmony. Some clansmen associations also actively participate in the “Funding Scheme for Youth Exchange in the Mainland” implemented by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau to apply for funding to organise youth exchange tours to the Mainland, supporting young people to broaden their horizons, deepen their understanding of the country and seize the national development opportunities. (3) In the first quarter of 2025, funding application under the Scheme for the financial year 2025-26 will be launched, with the focus on uniting clansmen in Hong Kong. The HAD will provide funding support for clansmen associations to organise various activities aiming at promoting patriotic education and fostering the spirit of loving the country, Hong Kong and the hometowns. The HAD will timely review the effectiveness and arrangements of the Scheme before the completion of the three-year programme, and will continue to maintain close contact and collaboration with clansmen associations. They have our support in organising all sorts of activities related to hometown culture promotion and patriotic education, and in collaborating with the HKSAR Government to promote the mainstream values of loving the motherland and Hong Kong that are in line with the core principles of “one country, two systems”.     Thank you, President.

The border towns of Przemysl and Cherven, first annexed after the Baptism of Rus during the reign of Vladimir the Saint, had been the subject of a dispute between the neighbors since the 10th century. It was these lands that Yaroslav’s brother Svyatopolk the Accursed gave to the Polish king in exchange for troops to help in the struggle for power over Rus. Prince Yaroslav the Wise put an end to his brother’s claims and recaptured the territories on the border with Poland.

Guests of the Moskino cinema park will see military shows and professional productions dedicated to the events of those years. At 11:00 and 16:00 viewers will see the drill training of squads dressed in authentic costumes of warriors of those times.

Among them are meat and bean soups, homemade cheese, smoked brisket, onion jam, as well as juicy chicken on the fire, pork ribs smoked in a cauldron and hearty pork roast.

These days, the cinema park will organize three excursion routes at once through several exhibitions. The first exhibition will show unique costumes from the 9th–11th centuries, the second will demonstrate various military equipment from the 11th century. During a visit to the third exhibition, guests will learn the most interesting details related to the life of Rus’ in the 11th century. The excursions last 20 minutes and will take place in turns throughout the day — from 10:00 to 18:00. The meeting place is the stele near the display cases with historical exhibits.

At the master classes, participants will be offered to try themselves in the role of a blacksmith and candle maker, master the technique of printing on fabric, the basics of calligraphy and carpet weaving, learn the basics of wood and soapstone carving, and also take part in the production of beads and amulet dolls, practice minting coins and soap making. Guests will learn how jewelers worked without microscopes and bright lighting, how armor was created, visit a warrior school and military training classes, and visit a gunsmith and tanner.

And military equipment from the 20th century can be seen in the parking lot in front of the Vadim Zadorozhny Museum of Equipment. The exhibition “Behind the Ribbon” presents airborne and infantry armored vehicles, support vehicles such as the BMD-1, BTR-60, BTR-70, Ural-375, GAZ-66, BTR-60 and others.

Get creative and go on a film trip

For example, the Uyezdny Gorod site will host the premiere of a staged shoot based on Mikhail Kozakov’s famous film Pokrovskie Vorota. Guests will be able to play their favorite characters: Velyurov, Kostik, Margarita, or Khobotov. The shoot will take place from 10:00 to 18:00.

The Pitersky Bar venue will turn into the legendary Three Minnows tavern from the Buratino fairy tale. Guests will act out a scene fragment together with the fox Alice and the cat Basilio. You can take a souvenir photo dressed as the fairytale character.

At the Moscow in the 1940s site, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the post-war capital, try on the image of the heroes of that time and take photos.

In the educational center of the Moskino cinema park, young Muscovites will take part in master classes. Thus, at the string art master class, children, under the guidance of experienced craftsmen, will create works of art by forming images from threads. And at another, they will make a movie clapperboard, a device used for sound synchronization during filming. Children will be taught how to depict emotions using face painting and oil paint at a master class on face painting with special paints. Participation in the master classes is paid.

On the first floor of the educational center you can also buy a ticket for a walking tour. Starting at 11:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:00.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Loud, bright, independent: The final of the Parade of Talents was held at the State University of Management

    Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Source: State University of Management – Official website of the State –

On November 1, 2024, the final of the Parade of Talents of our university took place noisily and hotly in the Assembly Hall of the State University of Management.

Even before the main event began, the atmosphere in the hall was like a discotheque – music was playing, spotlights were cutting through the stage smoke, fans were waving flags, posters, hearts made of light bulbs, and their ringleaders were chanting into a megaphone.

The following panel of judges evaluated the teams’ productions: – Vice-Rector of the State University of Management Pavel Pavlovsky – Vice-President of the Novard Group of Companies, a graduate of the State University of Management Sergey Sarkisov – Chairperson of the State University of Management Student Council Valeriya Burlakova – Choreographer of the 2024 Talent Parade, coordinator of the Just Dance 2024 dance project, head of the cultural and mass direction of the State University of Management Student Council Anna Poryadina – TODES ballet dancer Yana Agapova.

Before the concert, Pavel Pavlovsky and Sergey Sarkisov presented personal scholarships from the GUU Graduates Association. For entrepreneurial activity, they were received by Anastasia Manicheva, Stepan Yakovlev and Vladislav Naavgust. For active social work, the scholarship was awarded to Ksenia Starikova.

Despite the fact that the theme of the Talent Parade this year was expressed by the phrase: “Shine with inner light, not external effects”, the teams did not forget about external effects, having prepared very colorful productions. However, the theme of the performances often concerned the inner world, for example, meme dreams at a temperature of 39°.

In addition to the love story in dreams, the audience was shown a game of Mafia, given a tour of the chocolate factory with Charlie and the Oompa-Loompas, and scared by really creepy clowns. And the Pre-University of the State University of Management began the program with its own little concert within a concert.

Vice-Rector of the State University of Management, member of the jury of the Talent Parade Pavel Pavlovsky: “The Talent Parade is a large-scale event, which is part of the adaptation program for first-year students. Its key feature can be called the “equal to equal” principle, that is, senior students help juniors. The main thing is that this is not done under duress, the university administration does not force anyone. On the contrary, students fight for the right to become curators. This is a great honor, a huge competition, elections are held. Such excitement arises largely due to the fact that the Talent Parade is an independent event. The concept of the approach to educational activities in our country is the relationship between law and responsibility. Students know that they can experiment, but they bear full responsibility for their experiments. This system bears fruit in the form of completely packed halls, satisfied first-year students who in the first months of study become an integral part of the university, imbued with its spirit, traditions, culture. And the members of the Student Council feel like full-fledged actors of the university with their own area of responsibility. The management of the State University of Management monitors the process, reducing the level of intervention to a minimum, and simply ensures that everything meets the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science.”

Results of the Talent Parade: 1st place – IIS “Pokoloko”; 2nd place – IEF Golden ticket; Audience Choice Award – IOM “Chudlibudli”.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: New information revealed relating to 1980 homicide Cold Case

Source: New Zealand Police (National News)

Auckland Police investigating the 1980 homicide of Simon Buis are encouraging people to come forward with information, after revealing new details on last night’s Cold Case TV episode.

In the early hours of Friday 4 April 1980, 54-year-old Simon Buis was found dead in Auckland’s Gribllehirst Park outside the rugby club. He suffered horrific injuries to his face and head after being violently assaulted.

Later that morning, two 15-year-olds were arrested for being in a stolen car, and indicated they were involved in a fight at a park. The pair were charged with Simon’s murder, however due to further review of evidence, they were released six days later.

Over 40 years later, the investigation into Simon’s murder, named Operation Intrigue, remains open. And Police are determined to find the person or persons responsible for killing the 54-year-old father.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard of Auckland City CIB has been in charge of Operation Intrigue since 2006 and believes the key to this case relies on knowing Simon’s movements in the last hour of his life.

“We know Simon started his evening at the Leopard Tavern in Freeman’s Bay, where he then made his way to La Cava Lounge on Customs Street East. Here, he interacted with at least three different groups of people.

“Simon then called a taxi from La Cava and was dropped off on Symonds Street around 2.25am on the Friday morning.”

Around 30 minutes later, a couple heard screaming followed by the sound of a noisy car coming from Gribblehirst Park in Sandringham and called 111.

“The key pieces of information we are missing is why Simon went to Gribblehirst Park, how he got there, and who he was with. We believe it is unlikely that Simon walked the distance in the timeframe between the taxi dropping him off on Symonds Street and Police arriving to find his body in the park.”

Police have spoken to a number of witnesses who were in Gribblehirst Park earlier in the evening, including the couple who called 111.

The husband described seeing a light coloured Mark 1 Ford Zephyr, or possibly a large 1950’s American car, with a noisy exhaust and rounded body leave the park at speed.

Two to three minutes later, a second vehicle, possibly a yellow FJ Holden, left the park in the same direction.

“These cars remain critical to our investigation, and we know there are people who have not yet spoken to Police who may have seen what happened or have information about the events around Simon’s death. These details and fresh information will help us get the answers we need to provide some closure for Simon’s family.

“This was a serious and horrific assault which led to a man’s death, and Simon’s family continue to grieve for their loving father and friend.”

If you have any information that could help Police’s investigation into Simon Buis’ death, please contact Police.

“Now is the time to come forward, it is not too late to provide Simon’s family with answers.”

Information can be provided to the Operation Intrigue Investigation team on 0800 COLD CASE or 0800 2653 2273.

More about the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting on Cybersecurity

In a rapidly evolving cyberspace, where innovation and technology continuously redefine boundaries, systemic inequity is emerging when it comes to the capabilities of
organizations and countries to safeguard the benefits of technological progress.

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2024, the number of organizations maintaining minimum viable cyber resilience has decreased by 30%. This decline has further widened the skills gap in organizational cyber capabilities. The risks associated with this growing technological divide threaten the entire ecosystem and disproportionately impact the already vulnerable.

Against this backdrop, the Annual Meeting on Cybersecurity 2024 will bring together over 150 of the world’s foremost cybersecurity leaders from business, government, international organizations, civil society, and academia to foster collaboration on making cyberspace safer and more resilient for all.

  • MIL-OSI: EveLab Insight Unveils Advanced Neck Analysis with Revolutionary Panoramic AI Skin Analysis System

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

SINGAPORE, Nov. 04, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A revolutionary player in the beauty tech space, EveLab Insight’s Eve V Panoramic AI Skin Analysis System uncovers the ground truth of skin by capturing high quality 3D face contour and high resolution skin photographs in 25 seconds, accurately assessing skin concerns such as aging, redness, acne, skin tone, pigmentary spots and more. The Eve V system precisely analyzes the skin and provides customized skincare routines that allow individuals to discover the full potential of healthy skin.

Previously focused solely on facial analysis, EveLab Insight’s cutting-edge skin analysis system now makes a groundbreaking leap to the neck area. This innovative feature comprehensively evaluates neck wrinkles and fine lines, setting a new standard for neck scans in the market. With a sophisticated four-degree system and nine distinct grades to assess the severity of neck wrinkles, EveLab Insight can now provide precise scoring that highlights the condition of your skin. Levels include:

None: No wrinkles are present, and the skin appears smooth.
Mild: Presence of shallow wrinkles, either 1-2 or 3 or more.
Moderate: Medium-depth wrinkles ranging from 1-2 or 3 or more.
Severe: Deep wrinkles, with possible accompanying loose soft tissue in the neck area. The severity ranges from a few deep wrinkles to very noticeable loose tissue.

The addition of neck analysis to the EveV Panoramic AI Skin Analysis System is a powerful tool that can be used by brands, spas, clinicians and more for a plethora of reasons:

    Personalized Product Recommendations:
The neck wrinkles analysis feature allows beauty brands to offer highly personalized skincare product recommendations. By analyzing the severity and specific characteristics of neck wrinkles, brands can suggest tailored products such as targeted neck creams, serums, and masks. If a client’s analysis indicates moderate to severe neck wrinkles, the brand can recommend their specialized neck cream designed to address these specific concerns. This enhances the customer experience, increases sales of specialized products, and builds stronger customer loyalty.

    Promoting Existing Neck Creams:
Beauty brands with existing neck creams can leverage the neck wrinkles analysis to effectively promote these products. By demonstrating the efficacy of their neck creams through before-and-after skin analysis reports, brands can build trust and convince clients of the product’s benefits. This targeted approach not only boosts sales but also positions the brand as a leader in anti-aging solutions.

    Data-Driven Product Development:
Beauty brands can use the detailed data from the neck wrinkles analysis report to drive research and development. Understanding common aging patterns and the effectiveness of existing products help in creating new, more effective formulations. This ensures that the products address the most prevalent issues, enhancing their market competitiveness and effectiveness.

    Customized Treatment Plans:
Aesthetic clinics can use the neck wrinkles analysis to create highly customized treatment plans. By providing accurate and detailed information on wrinkle severity and characteristics, clinicians can design targeted treatments such as laser therapy, radiofrequency treatments, or injectable fillers. This precision leads to better treatment outcomes and higher client satisfaction.

The launch of EveLab Insight’s advanced neck analysis marks a significant step in addressing the unique skincare needs of the neck area. By providing precise assessments of neck wrinkles and fine lines, we empower brands and clinics to offer targeted solutions, enhancing personalized care for this often-overlooked region and transforming how we approach neck skincare.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Midas Man: Brian Epstein biopic captures the complexity that made the Beatles manager so brilliant

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Glenn Fosbraey, Associate Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Winchester

A few minutes after I took my seat at an advanced screening of Amazon Prime’s Brian Epstein biopic, Midas Man, I found myself engaged in Beatles chat with the chap next to me. I wasn’t surprised to find a fellow Fab Four fanatic at such an event. But I was surprised when I realised I was speaking with the legendary presenter Paul Gambaccini, a man who, I was soon to discover, met not only John, Paul, George and Ringo, but also original drummer Pete Best and bassist Stuart Sutcliffe’s sister. Or “five and a half Beatles”, as he put it.

As the lights went down and we readied ourselves, Gambaccini whispered that he hoped this wasn’t going to be “another Beatles film with no Beatles music in it”. The subject of soundtracks in Beatles biopics has always been an elephant in the room among fans, and Midas Man, like Backbeat (1994), In His Life: The John Lennon Story (2000), Lennon Naked (2010) and many others before it, did indeed lack any Lennon and McCartney (or Harrison) originals.

But, given that it cost the 2019 film Yesterday US$10 million (£7.7 million) to acquire the rights to use the Beatles’ music (40% of the entire budget), this shouldn’t really come as a surprise. And there aren’t any crafty ways round it, either. This much we know from the fate of 1979’s Birth of The Beatles which has been prevented from reissue due to its unauthorised use of songs.

Midas Man tells the story of the legendary Beatles manager, Brian Epstein. The film follows Epstein, played by Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, from his days as the unfulfilled manager of a furniture and musical instrument shop to making good on his promise that his unknown and unsigned band, The Beatles, would one day be “bigger than Elvis”.

Some reviews have taken issue at how the film shows Epstein one minute suavely cajoling American TV host Ed Sullivan, and the next falling to pieces after the death of his father. But such contradictions of character were exactly what made Epstein who he was – a man Beatles biographer Craig Brown has described as alternatively lonely, businesslike, scrupulous, obsessive, shrewd, awkward and pernickety.

For me, it’s Epstein’s complexity that makes him so endearing, both in real life and in Midas Man. Fortune-Lloyd expertly and realistically portrays him as confident in his abilities, but also on the cusp of being consumed by self-doubt at any moment. He also carries off the magnetic charm that led Epstein on his scarcely believable journey from selling pianos in his family shop to one of the most powerful people in the entertainment industry within the space of a few years.

    The trailer for Midas Man.

In what is ultimately a tragic story of a troubled life, it’s unsurprising that there are plenty of tearjerker moments. But screenwriters Brigit Grant and Jonathan Wakeham avoid the temptation to overdo the pathos, choosing subtlety over the sledgehammer.

A combination of this and Fortune-Lloyd’s understated acting lead to several poignant moments in the film. Epstein yearns to be a part of the band’s world, but is kept on the sidelines due to his position of authority, (perceived) difference in class and, most importantly, his own social awkwardness.

    Being Brian

The film’s sets are a highlight throughout, from 1960s Liverpool’s unique blend of vibrancy and poverty to the glitz and glamour of New York. The North End Music Store (NEMs) where Epstein worked and which became his management company, thrums with the energy and anticipation of the tectonic shift in culture that’s just around the corner. And I’ve scarcely experienced a more immersive recreation of The Beatles’s lunchtime performances at The Cavern.

Alongside Fortune-Lloyd’s nuanced performance, there were several other standouts. Leo Harvey-Elledge provides much of the humour as George Harrison, Rosie Day has a whale of a time as an effervescent Cilla Black, and the consistently excellent Eddie Marsan and Emily Watson are perfectly cast (although somewhat underused) as Epstein’s parents.

Good as the overall casting is, however, it’s hard to see Fortune-Lloyd’s Epstein as only six years senior to Jonah Lees’s John Lennon. As versatile as the former is, he looks significantly older than Epstein’s 27 years – the age he was when he first saw The Beatles perform at The Cavern in 1961.

This may seem like a minor point, but it affects the dynamic between him and the band, which, combined with the significant height difference between Fortune Lloyd (6ft 2) and Lees (5ft 8) gives a sense of authority that was more representative of The Beatles’ producer, George Martin.

The decision to create a fictionalised love interest in John “Tex” Ellington (Ed Speleers) is also odd. It serves only to suggest that Epstein’s life wasn’t interesting and dramatic enough without fabrication. Which is far from the truth.

Invented characters aside, there’s nothing in Midas Man that die-hard Beatles fans didn’t already know about Epstein. But given that he and The Beatles are part of what’s been called “the greatest story ever told”, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Social media and generative AI can have a large climate impact – here’s how to reduce yours

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Domenico Vicinanza, Associate Professor of Intelligent Systems and Data Science, Anglia Ruskin University

    CREATIVE WONDER / shutterstock

On a train or bus, or just standing in a queue, the most common sight these days is the muted glow of a screen, and the flickering thumbs of people lost in the endless scroll on their smartphones.

Across the world, about 62% of people are active social media users. In some countries, that figure is over 90%. That adds up to a lot of usage: the average UK adult spends 3 hours and 41 minutes online each day, which translates to around 56 days a year, almost two whole months.

Every time we read an article, see an advertisement, watch a photo or video, that content needs to be transferred from the social media platform’s servers to our device. The larger the file, the more data needs to be transferred. And high-resolution images or long videos involve lots of data.

That data is distributed across many “server farms” (typically housed in a large warehouse with thousands of computers) around the world. If you load a video from Youtube you don’t connect to a single “Youtube data HQ” somewhere in California, but will instead gather data from many different servers often in different countries or continents.

Moving data across the internet requires energy, sending signals through various electronic devices, including routers, servers, and our own mobile phone or laptop. Each of these devices consumes energy to function, while servers need to be kept cool. And this energy is often generated from fossil fuels.

    Low-energy LinkedIn tops the charts.
    Greenspector, CC BY-SA

Tiktok is the least eco-friendly of the social media platforms, according to a study of internet users in France run by Greenspector in 2021 and then updated in 2023.

Simply scrolling through the app exchanges a lot of data as Tiktok is constantly running videos, including many preloaded in the background that you may never even see.

At the end side of the spectrum is LinkedIn. As a text-based platform, with fewer photos and videos, scrolling through LinkedIn uses much less data.

    Generative AI is energy-hungry

Social media is of course not the only offender. Generative AI, with its ability to create text, images, music and even videos, is completely reshaping lots of creative processes. But though it is appealing, and sometimes a necessity, it comes with an environmental price tag.

Unsurprisingly, the more powerful the AI, the more energy it consumes. Unlike when you stream video or load a large web page, with generative AI most energy is used at their end, while processing your query. If you ask ChatGPT to write you a novel, the process of writing involves lots of calculations, even if the resulting text itself doesn’t use much data.

    Your request is being processed…
    Caureem / shutterstock

All this of course raises critical questions about the sustainability of generative AI and about our own carbon footprints. The AI companies themselves are reluctant to tell us exactly how much energy they use, but they apparently can’t stop their own chatbots having a stab. I asked ChatGPT-4 “how much energy was used to process this query?” and it said “0.002 to 0.02 kWh”, which it said “would be similar to keeping a 60-watt bulb on for about 2 minutes”.

This roughly matches numbers offered by independent analysis and is tens of times more energy than required for a Google search. With millions of queries per day to ChatGPT alone, it all adds up to a huge amount of additional energy use. As generative AI continues to evolve, the demand for energy will only increase.

    What you can do

While the environmental impact of these technologies raises valid concerns, it’s also essential to recognise their benefits. To take one example, AI-assisted tools like text-to-speech, voice recognition and auto-captioning have already made society more inclusive particularly for disabled or neurodiverse people. I don’t want to suggest we scrap social media or reject generative AI entirely.

But there are things we can do to reduce the carbon footprint of our internet use, involving a combination of individual actions and systemic changes. Here are some strategies we can all adopt:

First, limit the screen time. This is the most obvious one. Reducing the amount of time spent on social media can directly decrease energy consumption.

Second, use energy-saving settings on your devices, such as lowering screen brightness, using a dark background, and enabling power-saving modes.

Third, consider choosing less energy-demanding social media, using environmental ranking information to inform the decision. That means more text, and less video and generative AI.

Fourth, whenever possible, use wifi over 4G or 5G mobile data: wifi generally consumes less energy.

So, next time we find ourselves scrolling endless sequences of pictures and videos, our face lit by the blue glow of our screens, let’s just stop for a second and start implementing those simple strategies, so we can enjoy the benefits of being connected, while minimising the impact on our planet resources. Ultimately, the choice is ours.

  • MIL-OSI Global: The 27 Club isn’t true, but it is real − a sociologist explains why myths endure and how they shape reality

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Zackary Okun Dunivin, Postdoctoral Fellow in Communication, University of California, Davis

Many members of the 27 Club are outsize in their cultural influence. Psychology Forever/Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA

There’s a certain allure to the notion that some of the world’s brightest stars burn out at the age of 27. The so-called 27 Club has captivated the public imagination for half a century. Its members include legendary musicians Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. The idea is as seductive as it is tragic: a convergence of talent, fame and untimely death at a singular age.

But is there any truth to this phenomenon, or is it merely a story we tell ourselves and each other about fame and youth?

In our newly published research, my colleague Patrick Kaminski and I explore why the 27 Club persists in culture. We didn’t set out to debunk the myth. After all, there is no reason to think that 27 is an especially dangerous age beyond superstition.

Rather, we wanted to explore the 27 Club to understand how such a myth gains traction and affects people’s perception of reality.

    Is the 27 Club real?

The origin of the 27 Club dates back to the early 1970s, following the deaths of Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison – all at age 27, within a span of two years.

This uncanny coincidence left its mark on collective memory. It wasn’t just their age. It was the common thread of musical genius, countercultural influence and the tragic allure of lives cut short by a cocktail of fame, drug use and the struggle of being human. The narrative is not just compelling but almost mystical in its synchronicity.

Analyzing data from 344,156 notable deceased individuals listed on Wikipedia, we found that while there’s no increased risk of dying at 27, those who do die at that age receive significantly more public attention. Using Wikipedia page views as a proxy for fame, our study revealed that the legacies of these 27-year-olds are amplified, garnering more visibility than those who die at adjacent ages.

This increased visibility has a strange effect: People are more likely to encounter those who died at 27 than other young ages, even if they are not aware of the myth. This in turn creates the appearance of greater risk of mortality at 27. The myth of the 27 Club is a self-fulfilling prophecy: It became “real” because we believed it.

Why is the 27 Club a thing?

We believe this phenomenon can be understood through three interrelated concepts: path dependence, stigmergy and memetic reification.

Path dependence refers to how random events can set a precedent that influences future outcomes. The initial cluster of high-profile deaths at age 27 was statistically improbable – we estimate that one in 100,000 timelines would have four such famous deaths at age 27 – but it established a narrative pathway that has persisted and shaped collective reality.

Stigmergy describes how traces of an event or action left in the environment can indirectly coordinate future events or actions. In the digital age, platforms such as Wikipedia serve as repositories of collective memory. The existence of a dedicated 27 Club page, with links to its members’ pages, increases the visibility of those who die at 27. This creates a feedback loop: The more we click, the more prominent these figures become, and the more the myth is reinforced.

Finally, what we call memetic reification captures how beliefs can shape reality. We draw from a sociological concept called the Thomas theorem, which states that if you “define a situation as real, they are real in their consequences.” The 27 Club myth has tangible effects on cultural memory and fame. By imbuing significance into the age of 27, society elevates the legacies of those who die at that age, making the myth materially consequential.

    Why do myths endure?

Why do such myths endure? At their core, myths are not about factual accuracy but about narratives that resonate with people. They thrive on mystery, tragedy and the human penchant for finding patterns even in randomness. The story of the 27 Club is poetic, encapsulating the fleeting nature of genius and the fragility of life. It’s a story that begs to be told and retold, regardless of its veracity.

This isn’t an isolated phenomenon. Cultural patterns often arise from chance events that, through collective commitment and storytelling, become embedded in our understanding of the world.

Your social world shapes what you value and how you behave.

Consider the evolution of language – why do we call a dog a “dog”? There is nothing doggy about the word. Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein observed that nearly all symbols are arbitrary. Some countries drive on the left side of the road while others on the right. While the choice to adopt left- or right-side traffic is influenced by neighboring countries or car producers, ultimately these followed from an arbitrary resolution to the need to pick one side or the other. These conventions began as random occurrences that, over time, became standardized and meaningful through social reinforcement.

The 27 Club serves as a lens through which you can examine the power of mythmaking in shaping perceptions of history and reality. It highlights how collective beliefs can have real-world consequences, influencing who becomes immortalized in cultural memory. It’s a testament to the complex interplay between chance events, storytelling and the mechanisms by which myths are perpetuated.

Though we may appear to dispel the myth of the 27 Club, let’s not abandon the story. We’re myth trusters, not myth busters. In unraveling the myth, we’re acknowledging the profound ways in which narratives influence our collective consciousness. By understanding the processes behind myth formation, we can better appreciate the richness of culture and the stories people choose to tell.

Zackary Dunivin has received funding from the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship Grant 1735095 “Interdisciplinary Training in Complex Networks and Systems.”

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Consumers and Tech – Revealed: the WiFi routers to rent, upgrade to or buy outright – Consumer NZ

    Source: Consumer NZ

Find out which routers offer the best home WiFi performance.

In partnership with the Commerce Commission, Consumer NZ has tested a number of WiFi routers and reveals that some broadband companies now provide devices as good as off-the-shelf options

“This work builds on the Commission’s monitoring, including our RealSpeed report, which shows the importance of having a good in-home set-up to make the most of your broadband speeds,” says Tristan Gilbertson, Telecommunications Commissioner.

Consumer’s expert testers put a selection of models from broadband providers and popular retail brands through their paces.

“Your router is your gateway to the internet, and the better the router, the better the performance of your connectivity,” says Mr Gilbertson.

As Nick Gelling, Consumer product test writer, says, “With a growing number of households relying on stable internet connectivity to stream TV, work remotely or play games, understanding the differences in router performance, ease of use and security features is crucial.

“Nearly all New Zealanders use WiFi to connect multiple devices throughout their homes to the internet, yet many are unaware of how to optimise their set-ups for the best performance.”

    Find a reliable router

Consumer’s rigorous testing revealed that many routers provided by telcos are now on a par with, and in some cases outperform, popular third-party options.

“This is promising news for people who are hesitant to invest in their own equipment,” said Gelling, “because, these days, many telcos offer routers for rent at about $4 to $5 per month.

    Standout performers in Consumer’s testing

Consumer’s test experts found that the best off-the-shelf options were the TP-Link Deco X55 and XE75 mesh systems. Some of the top performing routers provided by broadband providers included the TP-Link Deco X53 (fibre and copper-based DSL) and X58-4G (4G broadband), as well as Spark’s Smart Modem 2 (fibre and 4G).

    Consumer insights: When to upgrade

Consumer NZ’s Gelling emphasised the importance of knowing when to upgrade your router.

“While many broadband providers are now offering quality hardware, it’s sensible to update your router every few years.

“If you’re still using an outdated model, you might be missing out on significant improvements in speed and security.”

The Commission advises New Zealanders to assess their current internet performance to check if they should upgrade to a faster plan or connection type, before deciding to switch providers or purchase a new router.

Simple steps like repositioning your router or connecting devices to the 5GHz band can often yield noticeable improvements.

    The Cost of Connectivity

As more telcos begin to implement monthly rental fees for routers, with costs typically around $4 to $5 per month, Consumer urges people to consider their options carefully.

“While these fees might seem nominal, investing in your own quality router gives you the freedom to swap providers more often, which could save you money in the long run,” Gelling added.

“With the rising cost of internet services, which have increased by 11% over the past two years, understanding your options for obtaining a reliable router can help mitigate some of these costs.”

    Tips for Consumers

Evaluate your current setup: Ensure your router is positioned centrally in your home, ideally where you can see it.

Consider a mesh system: For larger homes, investing in a mesh network (linking up two or more routers) can significantly improve connectivity.

Stay updated on technology: Look for routers that support at least the WiFi 6 standard for now. The cost of WiFi 7 is still high and it’s not yet compatible with most phones and computers.

Don’t hesitate to buy: If your telco’s offerings are lacking, don’t be afraid to invest in a high-quality third-party router.

Explore options to change provider: There can be advantages to switching providers particularly at the time of your contract ending or if your router is over four years old.

Film and Television Institute of India (FTII)’s student film “SUNFLOWERS WERE FIRST ONES TO KNOW” has qualified for the 2025 Oscars in the Live Action Short Film Category.

This short film has been directed by FTII student Chidananda S Naik and had earlier this year won the first Prize at the Cannes Film Festival’s La Cinef Selection, which led to global recognition for this Kannada- language project inspired by Indian folk stories and traditions.

The film, produced when Chidanand S. Naik was a student at FTII, showcases the expertise of a talented team, including Suraj Thakur (Cinematography), Manoj V (Editing) and Abhishek Kadam (Sound Design). The narrative is both poignant and profound, centering on an elderly woman who steals the village rooster, leading to a cessation of sunlight and resulting in turmoil within the community. In an effort to restore order, a prophecy is invoked, resulting in the exile of the woman’s family as they undertake a desperate mission to retrieve the rooster.

The La Cinef Jury at Cannes had commended the film for its illuminating storytelling and masterful direction, stating, “Une illumination qui, du fond de la nuit, brille par son humour et le sens de la mise en scène, le premier prix est attribué à Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know de Chidananda S. Naik” (“An illumination that, from the depths of the night, shines with humor and a keen sense of direction, the first prize is awarded to ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know’ by Chidananda S Naik.”)

Film director Chidananda S Naik remarked, “I have aspired to tell this story for as long as I can remember. Our goal was to recreate the experience of not merely hearing these stories but of genuinely living them—an experience I hope resonates with audiences around the globe.”

Filmed entirely at night, ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know’ immerses viewers in the heart of the Indian landscape, inviting them to engage with its unique culture and atmosphere. Shri Naik’s direction artfully combines traditional narrative elements with visuals that celebrate the beauty of the region, emphasizing the deep-rooted connections between people and the magic of their stories.

Having received acclaim on the festival circuit, including the Best Indian Competition award at the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival, ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know’ is now poised to compete alongside the world’s best short films. The campaign for Sunflowers will feature special screenings, press opportunities, and Q&A events, providing Academy members and audiences worldwide with a glimpse into the universal power of India’s storytelling traditions. Beyond its accolades, ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know’ serves as an invitation for viewers to engage with Indian culture and storytelling, illuminating the universal themes that resonate deeply with audiences globally.
