In addition to the course, which is aimed at theology students and those interested in the subject, we have established a two-year theological research group involving 15 specialists from various research fields. Working in the field of interreligious dialogue means paving a path to peace. Religious freedom is the path to peace. One of the important themes of the post-conciliar Magisterium is the consideration of religious freedom as a prerequisite for peace, because where freedom is respected, there is obviously peace, acceptance of others, and appreciation of religious diversity. Fundamentalists resort to violence because they do not tolerate religious diversity. They want uniformity, even within their own religious tradition; they view religion as a monolithic bloc and consider themselves the sole bearers of the authentic religious message. If this acceptance of diversity is lacking and differences are perceived as a threat rather than an enrichment, peace is in danger. But our faith is also in danger, for it always leads us to an encounter with others.”A long historyThe current mission of the Trinitarian religious family coincides with an update of its founding charism. “The Trinitarian Order,” explains Father Buccarello, “was founded for persecuted Christians, obviously in a different time and in a different historical context. In our motto, “Gloria tibi Trinitas et captivis libertas,” we find the word ‘slaves,’ ‘prisoners.’ Our founder, Saint John of Matha, began the “liberation missions,” initially from Spain to Morocco, with a letter from Innocent III, in which he recommended the Trinitarians to the Sultan of Morocco, saying that the work of freeing slaves was a work of charity, the most important, the most significant, and of universal benefit. In fact, the Pope had given the Trinitarians permission to free Christian slaves through exchange with Muslim slaves, thus creating a double liberation of both Christian and Muslim slaves.”Saint John of Matha was a learned theologian and had no intention to found a new religious family. During his first Mass, he had a vision: he saw Christ in the center, holding the arms of two slaves, a white Christian and a Black Muslim. After a period of reflection, it became clear to him that he had to found a religious family dedicated to this special mission: the redemption of captives “pro fide Christi.””Today,” adds Father Buccarello, “we know that this inspiration of our founder is very timely. The two ‘lungs’ of our mission are the works of mercy and persecuted Christians. And the latter is the work that most identifies and unites us. To update this charism, the Extraordinary General Chapter of 1999, on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the adoption of the Rule of the Order and the fourth anniversary of the Order’s reform, decided to create an organization to coordinate and promote this area of assistance to persecuted Christians, which would be called ‘Trinitarian International Solidarity.’”The organization’s current president, Father Antonio Aurelio Fernández Serrano, explains that “it is an internal body of the Trinitarian religious family, whose first 25th anniversary was just celebrated. On this occasion, we made a documentary to raise awareness of the problem of persecuted Christians.” “Our projects,” he explains, “are also present in countries like Sudan and South Sudan, where we have already freed several young people.”Father Buccarello adds details of a meeting of the aid organization in Bahrain, where, at the initiative of the Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia, Bishop Aldo Berardi, O.SS.T., a meeting was also held with Abdullah Abdullah, director of the Global Center for Peace Coexistence (see Fides, 23/10/2024). “Abdullah came to our Chapter to share his experience,” the Superior General said. “He was also in the Italian Parliament, where, at a meeting in the Chamber of Deputies, he described the Trinitarian Order as an example of dialogue, care, charity, and respect.”The challenges of todayThe Trinitarians are active in the Roman parish of Santa Maria delle Fornaci, the titular church of Cardinal Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio to Syria. “The Cardinal,” Father Buccarello explains, “spoke to us extensively about the situation in Syria, about persecution, but also about poverty, about the many Christians who have left the country in recent years. When Christians disappear from the Middle East, the balance that ensures harmonious coexistence between different cultures and faiths is lost. Peaceful coexistence is most threatened when a historical component of a region’s religious landscape disappears.”The Trinitarian Order is present in 25 countries, including Vietnam, South Korea, and India, a country where, according to Father Buccarello, cases of violence and harassment against Christians are increasing year after year, as well as in many areas of Africa where “terrorist groups and movements engaged in aggressive proselytizing” are active.The specific contribution that the Trinitarian Order can make for the future, according to the Superior General, is to “train religious who are experts in interreligious dialogue. We all need to be sensitized; even in the Western world, where we often do not know how to deal with religious diversity, there is no genuine encounter between people. Everyone has their own space; there is no true integration.” “In many schools in northern Italy,” he notes, “for example, the majority of students are non-Catholic and non-Christian. What resources do we provide to the children so that they can interact and welcome others? And are there other situations that are unknown? Our Trinitarian sisters in Valence, for example, have a school on the outskirts of Marseille. Eighty percent of the students are Muslims, who choose Catholic rather than public schools because they prefer a religious approach to a materialistic, atheistic one. In our school in northern Assam, India, only five percent of the students are Catholic; the others are Hindus and Muslims. However, they live together without problems because religious diversity is a resource that fosters respect for others and promotes the value of coexistence and peace.”The “motto” of the General Chapter was a quote from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians: “Persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” “One of the criteria that was very well highlighted,” the Superior General emphasized, “is that religious freedom is not a theoretical question, but affects the lives and suffering of so many people, and that it must be analyzed in context. In the Western world, there is an aggressive secularism that tends to reduce religion to the private sphere, and identity-political cultural movements that instrumentalize religion. Identitarian movements aim to mark a kind of difference and opposition between “us and you” by fueling narratives that appeal to people’s fears, for example when migration is portrayed as a kind of invasion by the enemy who has come to destroy our identity. All of us, starting with religious leaders, must loudly emphasize that the name of God cannot be associated with war and violence. This must be said emphatically.     On behalf of the United Kingdom, I would like to thank Antigua and Barbuda for hosting this important assembly. 

    The UK’s relationships with our friends and allies across the Americas are important to all of us.

    Be it climate change, security, or sustainable development – we face the greatest challenges together.

    And indeed, for more than two centuries now, the UK and Argentina have shared bilateral relationships – as part of a long, rich history.

    My friend the UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has met President Milei a number of times.

    Earlier this year, Security Minister Patricia Bullrich enjoyed a highly successful visit to the UK. 

    And even where we disagree, we are working together to reduce tensions.

    So, in September 2024, my friend the Foreign Secretary and the former Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino announced a new package of cooperation.

    This recognised that while we may not agree on sovereignty, there is much we can achieve by working together in the South Atlantic.

    The UK and Falkland Islanders have come together to implement this – including support for Argentine families travelling to the Falkland Islands in December last year, to visit graves from the 1982 conflict.

    For a community living with the trauma of invasion and occupation, that was not easy.

    Yet, Falkland Islanders wanted to do the right thing.

    Both the UK and Falkland Islanders look forward to seeing Argentina making good on their commitments.

    That includes cooperation on fisheries for the benefit of all, and the resumption of the flight between the Islands and São Paulo.

    The UK remains determined to work with all our partners, including Argentina.

    And the UK’s support for the Falkland Islanders’ inalienable right of self-determination remains undiminished. 

    Falkland Islanders alone should decide their future.

    In the referendum they held in 2013, Islanders voted to maintain their status as a self-governing UK Overseas Territory – overwhelmingly.

    Five of the six observers of the referendum came from the OAS Member States – reporting that it was free, fair, and reflected the will of the voters. 

    Today, the Falkland Islands are a democratic and prosperous community – showing the world what is possible on sustainable fisheries and environmental conservation.

    They are determining their own future.

    And their success has been recognised by S&P Global Ratings – who have given the Falkland Islands an impressive A Plus.

    And this is an objective recognition of the stable and thriving community that the Islanders have built.

    And later this year, the Falkland Islands will hold a general election to decide their next government.

    They will vote on issues such as education, the economy, and the environment.

    So, I hope this assembly will recognise that we cannot pick and choose who is entitled to the basic human right of democracy.

    The people of the Falkland Islands are rightly proud of their vibrant, small-island, big ocean democracy.

    And they are clear – that neither the UK nor Argentina can negotiate the future that they are determining for themselves. So let me be clear: my government will not negotiate on the future of the Falkland Islands, unless the Islanders themselves wish it. And they do not.

    I was delighted that many of your governments continue to engage constructively with the Falkland Islanders and have expressed your support for their democratic rights, and I hope that members of the Assembly will agree that we cannot selectively choose when democratic rights apply to a community.

    The UK has no doubt about its sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas.

    And we have no doubt about the principle and the right of self-determination enshrined in the UN Charter and in article one of the 2 UN Covenants on human rights.

    By virtue of this, Falkland Islanders can determine their political status and pursue their economic, social, and cultural development – freely.

    So, the UK asks that the General Assembly takes note of the Islanders’ right of self-determination – and that this statement is read into the record of this meeting.

    CHENGDU, June 28 (Xinhua) — Four giant pandas born in Japan arrived in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, on Saturday evening.

    Upon arrival, the four bears – 24-year-old female Liangbang (Japanese name Raukhin) and her three daughters, 8-year-old Jiebang (Japanese name Yuyin), 6-year-old Caibang (Japanese name Saihin) and 4-year-old Fengbang (Japanese name Fuhin) – were quarantined at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

    To ensure the pandas’ safe and unhindered return, the Japanese side organized special transportation, with Chinese experts traveling to Japan before departure to learn about their habits and living conditions. Both teams also accompanied the animals back to China.

    At the Chengdu base, in turn, quarantine equipment, food and personnel were prepared so that the pandas could quickly adapt to the new environment and successfully endure the quarantine period.

    In 1994, China launched a panda breeding cooperation program with Adventure World, an amusement park in the coastal city of Shirahama in Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture. During this time, the two countries’ joint efforts have produced 17 panda cubs and created the largest captive-bred population of giant pandas abroad, known as the “Ban family (Japanese name: Hin).”

    BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) — China firmly opposes any country entering into trade deals with the United States that harm Chinese interests in exchange for so-called “duty relief,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce said Saturday.

    “If such a situation arises, China will not tolerate it and will take decisive countermeasures to protect its legitimate rights and interests,” the official said in response to a media question regarding the US’s recent trade negotiations with other countries.

    “Since April, the United States has been imposing so-called ‘mirror tariffs’ on its trading partners. This is a typical act of unilateral bullying that seriously undermines the multilateral trading system and disrupts the normal order of international trade,” he said, adding that China has consistently and firmly opposed such practices.

    China welcomes other countries’ efforts to resolve trade differences with the US through consultations on an equal footing, but also calls on all parties to always adhere to fairness and justice, stay on the right side of history, and firmly safeguard international economic and trade rules and the multilateral trading system, the spokesperson said.

    TEHRAN, June 28 (Xinhua) — Iran held state funerals on Saturday for military commanders and nuclear scientists killed during the 12-day conflict with Israel.

    The ceremony was attended by the families of those killed in the attacks, as well as senior Iranian officials and military commanders, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Shamkhani, who was seriously wounded in Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.

    On June 13, Israel launched a series of massive airstrikes on various areas of Iran, including nuclear and military sites, killing several high-ranking commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. Iran responded with several waves of missile and drone attacks on Israel.

    After a 12-day war, a ceasefire was signed between Iran and Israel on June 24.

    During the funeral ceremony, Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni noted that the United States and Israel have proven their inability to fulfill any of their commitments.

    He stressed that the Iranian armed forces remain on high alert and are ready to give a decisive response to any “malicious actions” or breach of promises by the “enemy.”

    VILNIUS, June 28 (Xinhua) — Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia on Friday formally submitted notifications to the UN Secretary-General on their withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines.

    The three Baltic states cited changing national security needs as the main reason for their coordinated decision to withdraw from the convention, which bans the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of anti-personnel mines.

    Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys announced the move on Friday on the social media platform X. “Today, Lithuania officially notified the UN Secretary General of its withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention. This decision was not taken lightly,” said K. Budrys.

    The Latvian Foreign Ministry noted that the security situation in the region has changed significantly since Latvia joined the convention. “Withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention will provide Latvia with the flexibility to act to strengthen deterrence and ensure the protection of the country and its population,” the Foreign Ministry said.

    “By withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention, the Estonian Defence Forces will be able to more flexibly choose the weapons systems, means and methods necessary to strengthen the country’s defence capability,” said Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.

    The Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines was signed in 1997 and entered into force in 1999. Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia acceded to the convention in 2003, 2004 and 2005, respectively.

    In recent months, the three Baltic countries have carried out internal legislative procedures to facilitate their withdrawal from the convention.

    According to European media, Poland and Finland have also launched procedures to withdraw from the convention.

    BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) — China’s National Development and Reform Commission on Saturday allocated an additional 100 million yuan (about 13.96 million U.S. dollars) from the central budget to support disaster relief and reconstruction efforts in flood-hit Guizhou Province in southwest China.

    The department said that, along with the initial 100 million yuan allocated on June 25, the total amount of aid funds has reached 200 million yuan.

    They will support the emergency restoration of infrastructure and public services in Guizhou, especially in the severely affected counties of Rongjiang, Congjiang and Sandu, to facilitate the resumption of normal production and daily life as soon as possible.

    Talks to address US concerns on the global minimum tax can now continue without the backdrop of this new retaliation measure.

Rachel Reeves committed to work with international partners to find a solution and has raised business concerns in her recent engagement with US Secretary to the Treasury Scott Bessent.

    It follows the Prime Minister’s launch of the Trade Strategy this week which set out Britain’s trade priorities with a mission to open more doors for business and deliver growth, and recent trade deals with India, the EU and the US.

Recent discussions have considered U.S. Treasury concerns with the application of the rules alongside the U.S minimum tax system. 

    G7 partners have reached an understanding on a possible solution that would allow the US minimum tax system to operate alongside the Pillar 2 rules but take steps to ensure any substantial risks with respect to the level playing field or base erosion and profit shifting are addressed. 

    The G7 will now discuss and develop this understanding, and the principles upon which it is based, within the Inclusive Framework of over 140 countries and jurisdictions, while making clear that the removal of proposed retaliatory tax measures in U.S. legislation is essential for this further progress to be made. 

    Through engaging in constructive discussions on the global minimum tax, the Chancellor is preserving its objective to target multinational tax avoidance while protecting the stability of the international tax system for British business.

    TEHRAN, June 28 (Xinhua) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Saturday that if U.S. President Donald Trump is sincere in his desire to reach an agreement with Tehran, it should abandon its “disrespectful tone” toward Iran’s supreme leader.

    The diplomat made the statement in a post on the X social network, condemning the American leader for repeatedly using “disrespectful” language in his remarks about Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

    “If President Trump really wants to make a deal, he should drop his disrespectful and unacceptable tone towards Iran’s Supreme Leader and stop hurting millions of his sincere followers,” Araqchi said, noting that “goodwill begets goodwill, and respect begets respect.”

    “The complexity of the Iranian character and tenacity are well known from our magnificent carpets, woven through countless hours of hard work and patience,” he stressed, adding that, however, “the basic principle of our people is very simple and clear: we know our worth, value our independence and never allow anyone else to decide our destiny.”

    A pipeline of programmes to build entrepreneurial ambition, capability and networks for Scotland’s current and future entrepreneurs will be delivered with investment from the Scottish Government’s Ecosystem Fund.

    A total of 28 projects will deliver initiatives in 2025/26. They range from inspiring school pupils to helping businesses realise international growth.

    They include:

    • Women’s Enterprise Scotland, offering a 10-week programme for women entrepreneurs to address women’s constrained access to finance.
    • Galashiels Soup, which will offer community micro-grant events in Scottish Borders
    • SGDA Games Accelerator, Scotland’s first games-specific accelerator to address the unique challenges faced by games companies in product development, financing and marketing.

    A new, fully digital application process used by the Fund’s delivery partner, Inspirent, this year means that awards have been made just a few weeks after more than 300 applications were received, meaning programmes can be delivered sooner and for longer during the financial year.

    Nearly £100,000 of additional funding has been awarded to projects in response to demand to the Fund.

    The shareholders of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) (www.Afreximbank.com) have appointed Dr. George Elombi as the next President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the continental financial institution. He becomes the fourth President to lead the Bank since its establishment in 1993.

    His appointment was one of the key decisions of the 32nd Afreximbank group annual meetings and associated events held in Abuja, Nigeria, from 25 to 28 June, with the formal annual general meeting of shareholders taking place on Saturday, 28 June 2025.

    He succeeds Professor Benedict Oramah, who has served as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors since 2015, and who will be stepping down in September 2025.

    A Cameroonian national, George Elombi has been with Afreximbank since 1996, joining as a Legal Officer. He rose through the ranks to become Executive Vice President, Governance, Legal and Corporate Services. Over his nearly three decades at the Bank, he has served as Director and Executive Secretary (2010–2015); Deputy Director, Legal Services / Executive Secretary (2008–2010); Chief Legal Officer (2003–2008); and Senior Legal Officer (2001–2003).

    Dr. George Elombi holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the London School of Economics, University of London, and a Ph.D. in commercial arbitration from the same university. He obtained a ‘Maitrise-en-Droit’ from the University of Yaoundé in 1989.

    His appointment followed a rigorous selection process initiated in January 2025, which included a global call for applications published in international media and on the Afreximbank website. Shortlisted candidates were interviewed by an international human resource executive search firm. The top candidates were presented to the Board of Directors, which recommended Dr. Elombi to the General Meeting of Shareholders for final approval.

    HONG KONG, June 28 (Xinhua) — He Zhuguo (Ho Tsu-kwok), a prominent Hong Kong businessman involved in tobacco and media businesses, died of illness at the age of 77 on June 11 in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), an official statement said Saturday.

    He Zhuguo, born in Shanghai in June 1949, was chairman of the Hong Kong Tobacco Company Limited and chairman of the Sing Tao News Corporation Limited.

    He was a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a member of the Bureau of the CPPCC National Committee.

    He Zhuguo is a renowned patriotic businessman and “a close friend of the Communist Party of China,” the statement said, adding that He Zhuguo loved the country and Hong Kong, firmly supported the policy of “one country, two systems” and the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and supported the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s efforts to implement law-based governance.

    Detectives investigating the murder of a woman in Tower Hamlets have charged a man in connection with her death.

    Layek Miah, 27 (04.11.1997) of Malmesbury Road, Tower Hamlets was charged with murder. He appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 28 June. He was remanded in custody and is set to appear at Central Criminal Court on Tuesday, 1 July.

    Police were called on Thursday, 26 June at 23:01hrs, to an address in Monier Road, Tower Hamlets to reports of a stabbing.

    Officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service, who treated a woman in her 40s for stab wounds.

    Sadly, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Her next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

    BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) — Ambassadors and envoys from the permanent missions of eight countries to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna stressed cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology during a visit to China.

    Foreign envoys from Ghana, Brazil, Namibia, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Pakistan, Venezuela and Indonesia visited nuclear technology demonstration and innovation sites in China’s Shandong Province (east China) and Beijing.

    They exchanged views with Chinese officials and experts and attended a symposium in Beijing on cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

    The event, which took place from June 22 to 27, was jointly organized by the China National Atomic Energy Agency (CAEA) and the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna.

    CAEA noted China’s efforts to promote safe and sustainable development of nuclear energy, use of nuclear technology for social welfare, as well as its extensive practice and future plans to deepen cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear technology with developing countries.

    The foreign diplomats noted that China’s achievements in nuclear energy and nuclear technology have attracted the world’s attention, adding that China has played a vital role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy among countries in the Global South. They also expressed their willingness to cooperate with China at the bilateral and multilateral levels in areas such as nuclear agronomy, nuclear medicine, nuclear safety and security.

    BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) — The number of valid invention patents in China has reached 4.97 million by May this year, demonstrating the vibrant creativity of Chinese innovators and laying the foundation for cultivating and developing new productive forces, the National Intellectual Property Administration (NIPA) said at a press conference on Friday.

    China is currently in the process of transition from a major importer of intellectual property to a leading global creator of it, Guo Wen, an official representative of the State Intellectual Property Institution, said at a press conference, adding that the State Intellectual Property Institution, based on meeting the actual needs of domestic innovative entities, is making efforts to improve the quality of services in this area, in particular by updating the evaluation standards for patent applications, improving their quality and the efficiency of their examination, and optimizing the on-demand examination mechanism.

    “From January to May of this year, the State Administration for Intellectual Property Review reviewed 84,000 and 116,000 patent applications in priority and accelerated order, respectively, while postponing the review of 9,300 patent applications,” Guo Wen said, adding that 13 batches of patent applications were also reviewed in a centralized manner.

    “As a result, a number of high-value patents have been issued that can strengthen the core competitiveness of industrial sectors, guarantee national industrial security, and promote the transformation and modernization of industrial sectors,” she emphasized.

    Tashkent, June 28 (Xinhua) — In January-May 2025, gold exports from Uzbekistan amounted to $6.49 billion, which is 54.8 percent more compared to the same period last year, local media reported on Friday, citing data from the National Statistical Committee of the Republic.

    It is noted that the main contribution to the growth of exports was made by gold trade. The precious metal accounted for almost 44 percent of the total volume of Uzbek exports and became the main source of foreign currency.
