HOHHOT, June 1 (Xinhua) — China and Mongolia on Sunday formally launched mutual recognition of authorized economic operators (AEOs), according to the Hohhot Customs Office in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

An Authorized Economic Operator is an enterprise recognized by customs authorities as law-abiding and trustworthy. Having received the AEO status, an enterprise can enjoy conveniences in customs clearance.

Once mutual recognition of AEO status is achieved between China and Mongolia, the paperwork will be simplified, the number of inspections of goods will be reduced, and priority customs clearance will be possible. This step is expected to not only significantly reduce the cost of cross-border trade between enterprises in the two countries, but also ensure the safety and smoothness of supply chains.

According to statistics, from January to April 2025, 326 Chinese enterprises that had obtained the status of authorized economic operator were engaged in export activities with Mongolia, with the export value amounting to nearly 1.6 billion yuan (about 222.69 million US dollars), or about 15.5 percent of China’s total exports to Mongolia.

According to available information, as of the end of April this year, there were 6,479 enterprises in China that had received AEO status, whose trade volume accounted for 38.5 percent of the country’s total import and export volume recorded during the same period.

Meanwhile, China has signed mutual recognition agreements for AEO status with 31 economies covering 57 countries and regions around the world, including 38 countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. -0-

JERUSALEM, June 1 (Xinhua) — The Israeli military on Saturday confirmed the death of Mohammed Sinwar, a senior Hamas commander and head of the group’s military wing in Gaza, in an airstrike earlier this month.

A joint statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the country’s Shin Bet security service said Sinwar was killed on May 13 in a targeted attack on an underground command center located beneath the European Hospital in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli military accused Hamas of using the hospital as a cover, putting civilians at risk.

According to the IDF, M. Sinwar, 49, is one of Hamas’s most senior and longest-serving military leaders, and played a key role in planning the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that led to the current conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sinwar’s death earlier this week in a speech to the Israeli parliament.

The strike also killed two other senior Hamas commanders: Muhammad Shabana, who led the Rafah Brigade, and Mahdi Quara, commander of the Khan Younis Battalion. The IDF said both men were involved in the October 7, 2023, attack and later led attacks on Israeli troops, including hostage-taking and rocket fire.

Earlier, Gaza health authorities said the Israeli strike had killed at least six people and wounded 40. Hamas has not issued an official statement confirming Sinwar’s death.

    M. Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the former leader of the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, who was killed in a clash with the IDF in October 2024. –0–

KHARTOUM, June 1 (Xinhua) — Kamil Idris was sworn in as Sudan’s new prime minister on Saturday before Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the country’s ruling Transitional Sovereign Council, the council said in a statement.

Following the ceremony, A.F. al-Burhan and other council members met with K. Idris to discuss the government’s priorities, including stabilizing the economy, protecting the livelihoods of civilians and restoring order in all states of the country, the statement said.

The appointment of K. Idris was formally approved on May 19 by a constitutional decree of A.F. Al-Burhan, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces. The decision was welcomed by the UN, the African Union Commission and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Sudan’s prime ministership has been vacant since Abdallah Hamdok resigned in January 2022 following a military coup led by A.F. al-Burhan in October 2021. Hamdok and other civilian leaders were briefly detained and then reinstated under a short-term power-sharing agreement. He resigned weeks later, warning that Sudan was at a “dangerous crossroads” as mass protests against military rule erupted across the country.

    K. Idris holds a Doctorate in International Law and previously served as Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization and Secretary General of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants.

Sudan remains engulfed in conflict between the country’s armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Intervention Forces, which erupted in April 2023. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions more both inside and outside the country, deepening Sudan’s humanitarian crisis. –0–

  • MIL-OSI Global: Togo’s citizens want to leave Ecowas – new survey suggests why

Source: The Conversation – Africa – By Koffi Améssou Adaba, Enseignant et chercheur en sociologie politique, Université de Lomé

A survey of Togolese citizens recently looked into perceptions of their government’s handling of the terrorist threat in the northern region and of the Alliance of Sahel States – Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. The survey was carried out by Afrobarometer, an independent, pan-African research network, in partnership with the Center for Research and Opinion Polls.

The Savanes region in northern Togo, bordering Burkina Faso, has become an area of insecurity since a jihadist attack in 2021. This security crisis is part of a broader context of growing destabilisation in west African countries, centred on the Sahel region. It led to the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States in July 2024. The survey also covered perceptions of foreign influence in Togo and discrimination against women and girls.

Koffi Amessou Adaba, a political sociologist and one of the lead authors of the study, shares insights into the survey’s key findings, and the potential implications for Togo’s future.

What are the key findings of the survey?

The survey, which involved 53,444 people, reveals that 64% of Togolese believe the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) to form the Alliance of Sahel States is “somewhat” or “very” justified. This view is driven by three main factors:

    • a perception that Ecowas is influenced by foreign powers

    • a widespread rejection of Ecowas sanctions against Sahel states

    • the belief that Ecowas failed to provide military support during those countries’ security crises.

In addition, 54% of Togolese consider the presence of Russia (or the Wagner Group, now known as Africa Corps) in the Alliance of Sahel States to be beneficial. This trust in a non-western external actor reflects a profound shift in geopolitical perceptions in the region.

Another important finding of this study is that 54% of Togolese believe their country would benefit from leaving Ecowas to join the Alliance of Sahel States.

But opinions are split on whether the Alliance of Sahel States helps or hurts west African integration: 39% believe it doesn’t undermine regional integration, but 37% think it does.

West Africa is changing: five essential reads on breakaways from Ecowas

How do you make sense of the Togolese push to leave Ecowas?

This sentiment reflects growing frustration with Ecowas, which many Togolese now see as out of touch with the region’s realities.

The bloc is widely perceived as being too close to foreign powers and ineffective in responding to major security threats. Its repeated failures to help resolve Togo’s political crises (of 2005 and 2017 for example) have only deepened public disillusionment.

This frustration is unfolding alongside a broader wave of pan-Africanism in the region, marked by a growing rejection of former colonial powers and their institutional ties.

But this momentum should be approached with caution. The desire to leave Ecowas reflects anger and a strong appetite for change, not necessarily a clear assessment of the economic and diplomatic fallout such a move could bring.

    Read more:
Ecowas breakup could push up food prices and worsen hunger in west Africa

What do respondents think about terrorism in the north of the country?

Nearly six in ten Togolese (59%) say they trust the government to contain or root out the terror threat. This shows broad support for official counter-terrorism efforts, although some question the current strategy.

Opinions are especially split on how the crisis is communicated. Some find the messaging vague or lacking in transparency. Others think it helps keep people alert without sparking panic.

The survey reveals deeper concerns. Even Togolese outside conflict zones report growing insecurity. The northern crisis appears to be fuelling nationwide anxiety.

    Should Togo leave Ecowas?

Since tensions flared, Togo has been neutral. It has not openly condemned the Alliance of Sahel States countries and has maintained its membership of Ecowas. This careful stance reflects national sentiment – which leans towards support for the Alliance of Sahel States – while preserving Togo’s strategic and economic interests.

This approach isn’t new. It’s part of a long-standing Togolese tradition of balanced, pragmatic diplomacy. The nation has always pursued pragmatic and independent foreign policy that adapts to regional dynamics.

As west Africa’s geopolitical landscape shifts, Togo should:

    • maintain open cooperative relations with both Ecowas and the Alliance of Sahel States

    • preserve its strategic position as a logistics and trade hub for the region, particularly through the Port of Lomé

    • strengthen its image as a diplomatic force for stability in west Africa.

Can Togo maintain its delicate balancing act?

Togo’s careful balancing act remains its safest bet. The truth is, no one knows what the future holds for the Alliance of Sahel States bloc. But this middle ground gives Togo strategic flexibility regardless of how regional politics evolve.

Togo’s position leaves it well-placed either way. If the Alliance of Sahel States countries rejoin Ecowas, Togo keeps its influence. If they don’t, it still benefits from its neutrality.

Ultimately, Togo should keep playing this diplomatic card. Its measured approach offers rare stability in a volatile region.

BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) — On a warm weekend in early summer, thousands of muddy, out of breath but determined children ran, crawled and climbed during the Spartan Kids obstacle race in Beijing.

The race, which was held on May 24-25 at the Universal Beijing Resort theme park, namely the Universal CityWalk, involved children aged 4 to 14, who covered distances of 3 to 5 km with 18 to 26 obstacles. The children jumped over walls, climbed nets and clung to bars, while their parents applauded wildly from the sidelines.

“There are definitely times when my kids feel exhausted and want to give up, but that’s part of growing up,” six-time Olympic champion Ma Long said after jogging alongside his sons.

The growing popularity of events like the Spartan Kids obstacle race reflects a growing interest in children’s fitness in China, as well as a national push to get more children physically active, especially at a time when childhood obesity is becoming a major public health issue.

Nearly 19 percent of children in China aged 6 to 17 are overweight or obese, according to the National Health Commission (NHC). Research suggests that the overweight and obesity rate among Chinese children could reach 31.8 percent by 2030.

In response, China is stepping up efforts to reverse this trend. Notably, a three-year national weight-loss campaign was launched in 2024, while the government is also calling for stricter weight control measures among infants, children and adolescents.

In April 2025, the NHC issued a notice calling on relevant hospitals, including children’s hospitals and traditional Chinese medicine hospitals, to establish specialized weight loss clinics.

The country is also placing greater emphasis on physical education in schools. In Beijing, new guidelines call for more intensive physical education classes designed to make students “work up a sweat.”

Liang Jiaqi, a 12-year-old fifth-grader in Beijing, is one of many students embracing the breaks. His school now offers daily physical education classes, as well as regular long breaks that provide plenty of time for active recreation.

He said running is his favourite way to stay active, and he has also recently taken up table tennis, playing the sport daily with his younger brother and his neighbouring friends.

“Sports makes me feel relaxed and happy,” he said. “I have made new friends and I eat better after training.”

On International Children’s Day this year, Liang Jiaqi is putting her passion into practice by competing in orienteering. “It sounds fun and creative! I hope I can do it!” -0-

SINGAPORE, June 1 (Xinhua) — Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said here Saturday that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is committed to promoting open and fair trade while recognizing the potential risks associated with global fragmentation.

In a special speech at the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue Security Conference, he noted that maintaining ASEAN’s autonomy is “not about resisting others” but “about strengthening ourselves.”

The same spirit underpinned the statement by ASEAN leaders on global economic and trade uncertainty at the Kuala Lumpur summit earlier this week, Ibrahim said, adding that summit participants warned “of the dangers of unilateral action, equivalent tariffs and the growing risk of global fragmentation.”

“We reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to an open, predictable and rules-based trading system,” the prime minister said, adding that “open markets create the kind of interdependence between countries that encourages prudence rather than confrontation.”

Economic openness is a source of balance both between and within countries, allowing us to address pressing issues affecting the population, such as poverty, social inequality or even the digital divide, said A. Ibrahim.

This year’s Shangri-La Dialogue conference, which runs from Friday to Sunday, is attended by representatives from 47 countries, including 40 ministerial-level delegates, 20 chiefs of defence delegates, more than 20 senior defence officials and eminent academics, according to Singapore’s Ministry of Defence. -0-

TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) — Political leaders and former heads of state from across Asia have expressed concern over the U.S. government’s tariff policies, calling for stronger unity among Asian countries to overcome common challenges.

Speaking at the 30th Future of Asia Forum held in Tokyo from May 29 to 30, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong warned that the current global trading order was under threat.

He called on Asian countries to unite in addressing trade issues arising from US tariffs and stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation within ASEAN and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), especially in the areas of trade and industry.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said trade wars were undermining the free, open, inclusive and rules-based multilateral trading system, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable. He called for unity among countries facing pressure over tariffs.

Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, noting that while Laos has limited trade with the United States, high tariffs could still affect its economy and investment climate.

Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung said the US tariffs were having a significant impact on Vietnam’s exports and investments.

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has criticised US tariff measures, saying they could hurt the American economy and raise the cost of living at home.

  • MIL-OSI China: Growing appetite drives up exports of zongzi

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Traditional sticky rice dumplings — better known as zongzi, a favorite dish during Dragon Boat Festival — are enjoying booming popularity abroad, with exports seeing strong double-digit growth this year from Shenzhen, Guangdong province.

According to Shenzhen Customs, more than 157 metric tons of zongzi have been exported from the city since January, up 95.2 percent year-on-year, showing that the overseas appetite for this festive favorite is growing fast.

Zhu Danpeng, an independent food and beverage analyst, said that as China’s global influence grows, overseas Chinese are feeling a deeper connection to their roots.

“Zongzi isn’t just a festive food, it’s a symbol of cultural identity and nostalgia,” Zhu said. “Occasions such as Dragon Boat Festival are becoming even more meaningful abroad. This trend speaks not only to growing cultural influence, but also the rising confidence among overseas Chinese in the safety, quality and value of Chinese food products.”

Traditionally, Shenzhen-made zongzi were sent mostly to Hong Kong and Macao. But that’s changing quickly. Orders have started flowing in from more markets, including Singapore, the Netherlands and the United States, as international consumers show more interest in Chinese holiday foods, according to Shenzhen Customs.

Although classic fillings like salted egg yolk and pork still dominate, manufacturers in Shenzhen are getting more creative. Red bean paste, seafood and even fruits are now part of the mix, catering to more adventurous eaters. Zongzi fillings are also being exported on their own, opening up even more international business opportunities.

At Santa Ana Bakery, in Shenzhen’s Bao’an district, its employees were busy wrapping and steaming zongzi for global shipments.

“Our export orders are up 14 percent this year compared with last year,” said Wan Yingfang, a manager at the bakery. “Production started earlier, as demand was rising.”

Meanwhile, Shenzhen Customs has stepped up efforts to facilitate exports of the festive favorite.

“Dragon Boat Festival exports are extremely time-sensitive,” said Yao Bing, an official at Tongle division of Shenzhen Customs.

“As a result, we have dedicated staff to help manufacturers quickly get through inspections. We’ve also created a fast-track clearance channel and improved coordination at the ports.”

Other cities in Guangdong are also joining the export wave.

As of Tuesday, more than 150 tons of Dragon Boat Festival-related foods, including zongzi, had been exported from cities such as Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhaoqing, according to Chinanews.com.

These products not only bring comfort to overseas Chinese communities, but also help share a taste of Chinese culture with a wider global audience, said Zhu, the food and beverage analyst.

An all-party Indian parliamentary delegation, led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, arrived in Madrid on Sunday as part of an ongoing diplomatic effort to present India’s uncompromising stance on terrorism.

The delegation will engage with officials from the Spanish government, members of the Indian diaspora, and civil society representatives during its two-day visit. The outreach is part of a broader campaign to reinforce India’s zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, especially in the context of cross-border threats.

In a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Spain said, “The All-Party Parliamentary Delegation, led by MP Ms. @kanimozhidmk and comprising members @RajeevRai, @CaptBrijesh, @GUPTAPC50 and @DrAshokKMittal, arrived in Madrid today. Over the next two days, the delegation will meet with members of the Spanish government, the Indian diaspora and civil society representatives to present India’s stance of #ZeroToleranceForTerrorism.”

The delegation includes Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai, BJP MP Captain Brijesh Chowta (Retd.), RJD MP Prem Chand Gupta, AAP MP Ashok Kumar Mittal, and former Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the UN, Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri.

Prior to arriving in Spain, the delegation visited Latvia, where it met with key members of the Latvian Parliament, including Ingrida Circene, Chairperson of the Group for Promoting Cooperation with the Parliament on India, and Inara Murniece, Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee. The discussions focused on India’s security concerns and its determination to respond firmly to any act of terrorism, particularly those emanating from Pakistan.

Ashok Mittal shared details of the Latvia visit on X, stating, “We conveyed India’s unified and unwavering stance of zero tolerance towards terrorism.”

The delegation also held talks with Latvian State Secretary Andzejs Vilumson and Ambassador Andrejs Pildegovics, Special Envoy for Latvia’s United Nations Security Council (UNSC) candidacy. The Indian side shared information on the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which Latvia strongly condemned.

Vilumson reiterated Latvia’s categorical opposition to terrorism in all its forms and expressed solidarity with India following the Pahalgam incident in April.

The visit to Spain follows similar diplomatic engagements in Latvia, Greece, Slovenia, and Russia. These efforts are part of India’s broader international outreach under Operation Sindoor to counter Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and build global consensus on coordinated action against terror networks.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Pride Month: LGBTQ+ community need Pride protests more than ever

    Source: Scottish Greens

LGBTQ+ rights are human rights, and we will defend them; today, tomorrow and always.

Scotland must use Pride month to stand up for equality in the face of toxic campaigns by bigots, transphobes and homophobes, says Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie.

There is clear evidence that LGBTQ+ rights are being rolled back or ignored across the UK. In 2015 the UK ranked top of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA) ‘rainbow map’ that assesses LGBTQ+ safety and equality in countries. A decade later, the UK has fallen to second bottom in Western Europe.

The dramatic drop has occurred because of a toxic culture war, which targets the LGBTQ+ community; especially transgender and non-binary people, and has left many feeling unsafe and abandoned by politicians.

In Scotland, the Scottish Government has dropped their commitment to ban conversion therapy practices, the UK Government blocked Gender Recognition Reform, and the Supreme Court has now changed the understanding of the Equality Act to exclude trans people.

    Mr Harvie said:

“When the message coming out of our Parliamentary debates echo the division and harm that Section 28 caused until it was repealed 25 years ago, protests like Pride marches are more important than ever before.

“Just a few decades ago, casual and blatant homophobia was very real in our society. We made great strides to change this perception and set an expectation that politicians would support and protect queer people, with elected MP’s and MSP’s feeling safe enough to come out in their public lives. I know that doing so was easier for me because a brave few did so before me, when it wasn’t safe or easy.

“But now we are seeing the same old prejudices being stirred up again, this time most frequently targeted against trans and non-binary people, and shamefully, some of our elected representatives are joining in with the cause, stoking the flames of a toxic culture war.

“It is not surprising that political parties have been banned from Pride events up and down Scotland and the wider UK. Many LGBTQ+ people have lost faith in politics and feel abandoned by their representatives, feeling that there is a lack of leadership on our human rights and equality.

“Choosing to support fundamental human rights should not be a radical notion, but one that every political party is expected to fight for; something that the Scottish Greens have long stood for and will continue to do.

“LGBTQ+ rights are human rights, and we will defend them; today, tomorrow and always.”

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Single use vape ban comes into force

    Source: Scottish Government

Powers to ban the sale and supply in Scotland.

Single-use vapes will no longer be stocked or sold in Scotland under new legislation which comes into force today (Sunday 1 June).

The UK-wide ban has been introduced to prevent the environmental damage disposable vapes cause and to address health concerns associated with vaping as Scotland moves towards a tobacco-free generation by 2034.

An estimated 26 million disposable vapes were thrown away in Scotland in 2023. Of these, more than half were not recycled properly and around 10% were littered. The batteries used within disposable vapes are difficult to recycle, leak harmful waste and can cause fires in waste facilities.

Acting Net Zero Secretary Gillian Martin said: “Scotland was the first nation in the UK to commit to taking action on single use vapes.

“It’s estimated that over half of disposable vapes are incorrectly disposed of each year in Scotland – creating a fire risk and littering our beautiful environment. They also contain nicotine which is highly addictive.

“This change to the law fulfils a Programme for Government commitment and will help tackle the threat that single-use vapes pose to our environment as well as to our public health.

“We have worked closely across the four nations to ensure a consistent approach to a ban on the sale and supply of single-use vapes and will continue to work with regulators regarding enforcement once in force.”

Moves to raise the age of sale of tobacco products and regulate the displays, flavours and packaging of reusable vapes, are being taken forward separately through the 4-nations Tobacco and Vapes Bill.

    Background

The ban on single-use vapes has been taken forward using powers under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. This approach has been used in the past to ban other items such as microbeads, cotton buds and single use plastics.

A ban on single-use vapes was recommended in the four nation consultation ‘Creating a Smokefree Generation and Tackling Youth Vaping’ which ran in 2023.

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) — Chinese and foreign scientists have called on the global scientific community to unite and make greater contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by further exploring the frontiers of science and technology.

This was announced on Saturday in Beijing at a symposium on “Sustainable Development and Inclusive Cooperation: Responsibility of the Scientific Community,” organized in honor of the 70th anniversary of the academic departments of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

As ANC President Hou Jianguo noted, global challenges such as climate change, environmental pollution, resource scarcity and food security are becoming increasingly interconnected, and the opportunities and challenges of the new technological revolution are profoundly reshaping the landscape of global sustainable development.

He said that ANC, as a national scientific research institution of China, has been steadily enhancing its research activities in fields such as environmental conservation, life sciences, health care and energy technology for many years, exploring new ways and solutions to apply emerging technologies for sustainable development.

Looking ahead, Hou Jianguo stressed that the CPC will continue to adhere to the principle of opening up to the outside world, and work closely with partners and leading scientists around the world to deepen international cooperation in key research areas. He assured that the CPC will also expand talent exchanges and joint training, conduct consultative assessments on sustainable development, promote open data sharing to ensure sustainability, and harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI).

Reflecting on five decades of personal engagement with Chinese scientists and the development of institutional links between Australia and China, Australian Academy of Science President Chennupati Jagadish, for his part, highlighted the enduring power of inclusive bilateral and multilateral scientific cooperation.

He particularly noted the potential of science to overcome geopolitical boundaries and enhance global cooperation, especially in transformative areas such as quantum technologies and AI.

Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Sergey Chernyshev, in turn, stated that RAS gives priority attention to cooperation with China. According to him, future cooperation between RAS and ANC will be key to overcoming global challenges and strengthening bilateral relations.

International Science Council (ISC) President Peter Gluckman noted that the ISC has become a true leader in global science not only through its research contributions but also through its strengthened partnerships and commitment to science as a global endeavor.

As P. Gluckman pointed out, the WNC is also committed to promoting international scientific cooperation, protecting the principles of science and ensuring its further progress to solve global problems.

The event was attended by more than 60 people, including heads of national academies of sciences and responsible persons of international scientific organizations from 14 countries and regions, as well as domestic and foreign members of the ANC. –0–

  • MIL-OSI Europe: ASIA/PAKISTAN – “Justice, peace, truth: the Jubilee for Christians in Pakistan”

Source: Agenzia Fides – MIL OSI

    Diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi

Islamabad (Agenzia Fides) – “We are living in critical times in Pakistan, where everything seems at risk. The economy is in a difficult situation, the cost of living has skyrocketed. At a social level, people are very worried: Christians are among the poorest segments of the population, who are suffering the most. Unemployment is high, and people are emigrating. In a situation where everything seems negative, the Jubilee of Hope brings us back to the heart of the faith and gives us consolation,” says Fr. Asif John Khokhar, Vicar General of the Diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi and National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Pakistan, in an interview with Fides, where he also shares how the country’s Catholic communities are living the Jubilee Year.In Pakistan, according to the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies, all dioceses, parishes, and communities have organized spiritual initiatives aimed at people of all walks of life, adults and children. “People,” he emphasizes, “are trying to fully embrace the spirit of the Jubilee: This time leads us to convey hope, and we fully recognize ourselves in this expression. In the challenges of each day, amidst difficulties, poverty, and suffering, we are pilgrims of hope, that is, we walk through them carrying Jesus Christ in our hearts.””Today, the Pakistani faithful look in particular to Pope Leo XIV, who, with his particular attention to the Church’s social teaching, offers us three words: justice, peace, and truth, which encourage us to penetrate to the heart of the Gospel,” the Catholic priest said. “We believe that his words and his teaching will have a significant impact on our situation: he emphasized the Church’s social teaching, and for us Christians who find ourselves in a minority situation, we adhere to the three words he emphasized – justice, peace, and truth – in order to be able to live in our context.”Father Asif explains: “We are ready to protect justice, which is the foundation of every nation. We believe and demand that justice and equality must be established and respected in all situations and at all levels in Pakistan. We believe and hope that everyone – the institutions, the religious leaders, and civil society – will promote this.”Regarding “peace,” he notes: “We are promoters of peace, within and outside the nation.” In this context, Father Asif particularly addresses the current tensions between India and Pakistan, which stem from the disputed region of Kashmir: “It is very sad to see violence, clashes, and deaths again. We must find a way to create a peace that respects the rights of both nations, with a lasting agreement that brings reconciliation,” he hopes, “because people, societies, and economies suffer from war. It is better to sit down at the table before war than after war.” “Furthermore, as Christians, as a small community, we are always promoting dialogue between communities, cultures, and religions, thus contributing to social peace in Pakistan,” he emphasizes.Regarding the Christian concept of “truth,” the National Director says: “We stand firmly by the truth of our faith, which gives us an identity in a country with an Islamic majority. As Christians, we proudly and humbly contribute to Pakistan. We love our homeland. No one can deny or dispute that we have been involved in building the nation from its very beginning and have made a significant contribution to its growth and development. We want to continue to make our contribution, and we do so in exemplary fashion through many educational and social projects, always working for the unity and harmony of the nation, for the prosperity and well-being of all.”Among the initiatives that give new hope to Pakistan’s believers, the Vicar General said, is the laying of the foundation stone for a new church dedicated to the Holy Rosary in Gujrat, in the Diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi. In recent days, Archbishop Joseph Arshad presided over the celebrations, as the local community celebrated the faith event, praying in particular “for the progress, stability, and peace of Pakistan.” The archbishop expressed his gratitude to God and the local authorities for making it possible to build a new church for the community in Gujrat, which is home to “a vibrant, educated, and competent Christian community,” with many young people who wilol be able to “contribute to the development of their families and the nation.” (PA) (Agenzia Fides, 31/5/2025)

Source: Agenzia Fides – MIL OSI

Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) – The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is worsening as the war intensifies. According to the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric de la Rivière, the situation remains particularly dire in the town of El Fasher and the Abu Shouk refugee camp. Both locations are besieged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which are constantly shelling them. The situation is also critical in South Kordofan and West Kordofan. According to the International Organization for Migration, around 2,800 people, mostly women and children, fled the renewed fighting in the town of Dibebad last week in South Kordofan. In West Kordofan, members of the Arab Misseriya tribal group, previously allied with the RSF paramilitary forces, are divided over whether to continue supporting the rebels or reach an agreement with the armed forces in Khartoum in the face of the advance of the regular army (Sudan Armed Forces, SAF).It is no coincidence that clashes have intensified in key strongholds, particularly in Darfur and Kordofan, where the RSF is pursuing plans to form a parallel government. Both sides are also conducting drone strikes on their respective political-military command centers: Nyala, the capital of South Darfur and a strategic center of the RSF, and Port Sudan, the current seat of the SAF-allied administration.Meanwhile, according to the United Nations, the cholera epidemic in Khartoum State (which includes the capital) has worsened, with the number of suspected cases increasing by 80% to over 8,500 in the last two weeks. Although the World Health Organization has delivered some medical supplies to Khartoum hospitals, “much more is needed to contain the epidemic,” Dujarric said. (LM.) (Agenzia Fides, 31/5/2025)
