  • MIL-OSI United Nations: ‘We must not normalise the war in Ukraine,’ warns country coordinator

    Source: United Nations 2-b

18 December 2024 Peace and Security

On Wednesday UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Matthias Schmale briefed the press after visiting the war-ravaged eastern Donetsk region, sharing harrowing accounts of human resilience amid the chaos of Russia’s ongoing invasion.

The UN’s top official in the country – who also coordinates all the organization’s humanitarian work there – emphasised the urgent need for peace, justice, and sustained international support.

In October and November alone, over 2,180 civilian deaths and injuries were verified.

The intense fighting has also led to a stream of evacuations, with nearly 40,000 people displaced from frontline areas in the past two months.

    Elderly and disabled worst hit

Mr. Schmale highlighted the heightened vulnerability of marginalised groups while recounting meeting two elderly evacuees in Dnipro, who shared their despair after losing everything to the war.

“Understandably, they expressed a pessimistic outlook for a better future,” he noted.

He voiced concerns for people with disabilities as he observed firsthand their plight during a visit to a transit centre.

“I observed how incredibly challenging it is for people with disabilities to cope with the traumas and disruptions caused by the ongoing war,” he underscored.

    Resilience in crisis

Amid the devastation, frontline humanitarian workers have continued to serve communities in crisis.

In Donetsk region, doctors and health staff, supported by the World Health Organization, provide essential healthcare in extremely harsh conditions.

However, as Ukraine enters its third winter since the full-scale invasion, below-zero temperatures and systematic attacks on energy infrastructure pose significant risks.

Recent strikes in late November and mid-December caused widespread blackouts, affecting millions and leaving vulnerable populations in high-rise buildings without heating, clean water, or functioning sewage systems.

“The attacks have already severely worsened the dire situation for the most vulnerable populations,” the coordinator warned.

    Addressing the winter crisis

The UN’s humanitarian winter response plan aims to address emergency needs, including providing solid fuel, cash assistance, and water system repairs.

However, $500 million is required to fully implement these efforts by March 2025.

Additionally, a broader humanitarian appeal for $2.2 billion is being prepared for 2025 to assist an estimated 12.7 million people.

This includes sustaining early recovery programmes, such as education, while addressing critical emergency needs.

Concluding his statement, the Resident Coordinator delivered a powerful message: “We must not normalise the war in Ukraine.”

“The guns must fall silent and there must be peace with accountability and justice served in full respect of the UN Charter and the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” he emphasised.

  • MIL-OSI NGOs: How women are reducing maternal mortality in Benin story Mar 04, 2025

    Source: Doctors Without Borders –

Before Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) arrived in the southern department of Couffo, Benin, only a small percentage of pregnant women and women of reproductive age were visiting a health center on a regular basis. Most women were not getting medical check-ups during their pregnancies, and often gave birth at home.

There was also significant demand for contraception, but around half of women of reproductive age did not have access to it. Maternal and infant mortality rates were high, and some of these deaths could have been prevented with regular medical monitoring.

Since 2022, MSF teams and partners from the Ministry of Health have been working to ensure long-term and sustainable changes in health care access for communities in Couffo. Today, outreach and health promotion activities in Couffo’s villages are carried out mainly by women trained by MSF. These women have connected health centers in the area with local communities, focusing on women, who are now being monitored on a more regular basis.

Some people thought that a woman who controlled her pregnancies would become sterile. I’ve noticed that people’s minds are slowly changing, when a couple understands that a woman will be in good health if she avoids a pregnancy too soon after the last one.

    Hippolite, health promotion supervisor

Léonie is the mother of five children. She is one of the women in her village who have been made aware of the good practices to adopt when pregnant to stay healthy. During her last pregnancy, Léonie suffered from fluid retention and swelling in her feet that made it difficult for her to sleep. The herbal infusions she was given had no effect.

Once she was informed of the importance of medical care during pregnancy, Léonie went to a health center where staff listened to her needs. Because her last pregnancy was particularly difficult, without this medical assistance and a safe delivery of her baby, Léonie could have died. Today, her 7-month-old son, Précieux Magloire, is doing well and also receiving care at the health center.

Minds are slowly changing about a long-held taboo

Hippolite supervises health promotion activities in the villages of KTL health zone, which is named after its three communes, Klouékanmè, Toviklin, and Lalo. Part of his job is to train and support women leaders, who are active ambassadors for other people in their villages. The involvement of these women is essential to help inform the community and support them in making decisions to improve their reproductive health.

“If women don’t know why they need to go to the health center, they won’t go,” said Hippolite. “Medical staff can save lives, but we are also fighting ignorance, which can lead to some people dying.”

    22,211

    prenatal consultations

    3,253

consultations for access to family planning methods

    9,920

deliveries, including 4,153 in the hospital, 3,659 in health centers, and 2,108 cesarean sections

To bring sustainable change within the community, MSF is focusing on providing adequate information about different methods of family planning methods to enable couples to choose if and when they will have their next child.

“The question of contraception has been a taboo subject in Beninese society for a long time,” said Hippolite. “Some people thought that a woman who controlled her pregnancies would become sterile. I’ve noticed that people’s minds are slowly changing, when a couple understands that a woman will be in good health if she avoids a pregnancy too soon after the last one.”

Community coordination ensures access to health centers

Lucienne is one of the 465 leaders trained by MSF. Since she started, she has seen the results in the community, particularly among men. In her village, a tricycle referral system has been set up to take people to the nearest health center. It is mainly the men who manage this system for the women.

“Before I became involved, I also thought that contraception made people sick and sterile,” said Lucienne. “I understood the reluctance of husbands and their wives. Today, I realize that when contraception is accepted in a household, it avoids many problems between partners.”

“I was also afraid that women who suffered complications during pregnancy would die,” she continued. “Today, many things have changed for the better.”

These women leaders play a vital role in reducing maternal mortality, complementing MSF’s awareness-raising activities with their knowledge of the challenges and conditions the communities face and how best to communicate with their peers.

    Contraception contributes families’ well-being

Felix is the father of six children, the eldest of whom is 15. He and his wife lost two children who were in their early childhood. As one of the 160,000 people reached by MSF teams since the project began, he is now aware of the various methods of contraception. Before, he used to believe that the withdrawal method was enough to prevent pregnancy. Now he understands the importance of spacing births for the well-being of his whole family, and that contraceptive methods are a safe way of achieving this.

“Denise gave birth five months ago to a baby girl whom we have named Naomie,” said Noutchedehou. “Now we’re going to take good care of the children we already have, and we won’t have any more children. I, in turn, will pass the message on to my children so that this suffering never happens again.”

    We speak out. Get updates.

    Our work in Couffo

MSF teams have been working in the Couffo department since 2022. In addition to health promotion activities, six health centers have received the support of MSF in the recruitment and training of health staff, rehabilitation, and medical supplies. MSF teams also work in Couffo’s hospital, which receives the most severe cases in the area and we assist a blood bank to ensure that adequate blood supplies are available for anyone in need. MSF supports pre- and postnatal consultations, safe deliveries, safe abortion care, family planning counseling, and assistance for victims of sexual violence.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Statement by the Prime Minister on International Women’s Day

Source: Government of Canada – Prime Minister

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on International Women’s Day:

“Women in Canada have made transformative progress in shaping our country for the better. Today, we celebrate their remarkable achievements, we honour their legacy of breaking norms and ceilings and lifting up others, and we reaffirm that there’s more work to be done.

“More gender equality means stronger, fairer economies. When women and girls are meaningfully supported, valued, and empowered, we break barriers, spur progress, and shape a better future for generations to come. That means giving women more choices in the workforce, closing the gender wage gap, and reaffirming our collective commitment to women’s leadership – from public offices to corporate boardrooms to university and college campuses.

“Since 2015, we have made important and meaningful progress. With our first-of-its-kind, universal $10-a-day child care program, families – especially moms – are getting the support they need to join the workforce or continue their career while raising their kids. Earlier this week, we reached extension agreements with 11 out of 13 provinces and territories so more families can get affordable child care.

“We also introduced Canada’s first Women Entrepreneurship Strategy – backed by a nearly $7 billion investment – to help women entrepreneurs start up, scale up, and soar in their businesses. With the Women’s Economic and Leadership Opportunities Fund, we are making sure more women are at the leadership table.

“Beyond our borders, our Feminist International Assistance Policy has ensured Canada remains a global leader in gender equality. Every year, we are investing an average of $1.4 billion to advance our 10-Year Commitment to Global Health and Rights, with $700 million dedicated specifically to supporting comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and girls. We’re sharing the message loud and clear – through action and engagement – that sexual and reproductive care is health care.

“Guided by the Federal Pathway and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act Action Plan, we also continue our efforts to end the national crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people. This includes projects like the Red Dress Alert pilot in Manitoba, which can inform the public when an Indigenous woman, girl, Two-Spirit, or gender-diverse person goes missing, so they can be brought home safely. And in partnership with provinces and territories, we are advancing the National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence to deliver critical support to victims, survivors, and their families – because everyone has the right to live free from violence.

“Finally, our government is proudly, firmly pro-choice. That doesn’t just mean supporting the right to choose, it also means increasing the choices available for women. With our pharmacare agreements, we are making contraception medications and devices free – from birth control pills, to IUDs, to the morning after pill – so women are free to choose if, when, and how they plan their family. With this coverage, nine million women will have more choices and, importantly, more affordable choices – so their right to reproductive freedom isn’t restricted by cost.

“On this International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the incredible contributions of women and girls to our communities, our country, and our world. We all have a role to play – as partners and allies – in achieving gender equality and building a better future. Because when women and girls succeed, we all do.”

    Source: The Holy See

Message of the Holy Father, read by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, to participants in the pilgrimage of the Movement for Life, 08.03.2025
The following is the Message of the Holy Father to the participants in the pilgrimage of the Movement for Life, read out by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin during Holy Mass in the Vatican Basilica:

    Message of the Holy Father
Dear sisters and dear brothers of the Movement for Life!
Thank you for your remembrance in prayer. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I greet you all, in particular the President, Ms. Marina Casini, and the members of the Directorate.
I know the value of the service you provide to the Church and society. Together with concrete solidarity, lived with the approach of closeness and proximity to mothers in difficulty due to a difficult and unexpected pregnancy, you promote the culture of life in a broad sense. And you aim to do so with frankness, love and tenacity, keeping truth closely united to charity towards everyone. You are guided in this by the examples and teachings of Carlo Casini, who had made service to life the centre of his lay apostolate and his political commitment.
The occasion that has brought you to Rome is important: the fiftieth anniversary of the Movement for Life, whose first seed was the Centre for Help for Life, established in Florence in 1975. Since then, throughout Italy, the Centres for Help for Life have multiplied. They have been joined by the Reception Centres, the SOS Vita services, the Gemma Project and the Culle per la Vita, Cradles for Life. Countless initiatives have been undertaken to promote the culture of welcome and human rights at all levels of society. Therefore, I encourage you to pursue the social protection of motherhood and the acceptance of human life at every stage.
In this half-century, while some ideological prejudices have diminished and sensitivity for the care of creation has grown among young people, unfortunately the culture of rejection has spread. Therefore, there is still, and more than ever, a need for people of all ages to concretely devote themselves to the service of human life, especially when it is at its most fragile and vulnerable; because it is sacred, created by God for a great and beautiful destiny; and because a just society is not built by eliminating unwanted unborn children, the elderly who are no longer independent, or the incurably ill.
Dear sisters and dear brothers, you have come from many parts of Italy to renew once again your “yes” to the civilization of love, aware that freeing women from the conditioning that drives them not to give birth to their own child is a principle for the renewal of civil society. Indeed, it is before everyone’s eyes how society today is structured on the categories of possessing, doing, producing, and appearing. Your commitment, in harmony with that of the entire Church, points to a different approach, one that places the dignity of the person at the centre and prioritizes those who are weaker. The unborn child represents, par excellence, every man and woman who does not count, who has no voice. To place oneself on his or her side means standing in solidarity with all the world’s discarded. And the gaze of the heart that recognizes him or her as one of us is the lever that moves this project.
Continue to be committed to women, on their capacity for acceptance, generosity and courage. Women must be able to count on the support of the entire civil and ecclesial community, and the Centres for Help for Life can become a point of reference for all. Thank you for the pages of hope and tenderness you help to write in the history book, and which remain indelible; they bear, and will bear, much fruit.
May the Lord bless you and the Holy Virgin keep you. I entrust every one of you, your groups and your efforts to the intercession of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, spiritual president of the Movements for Life throughout the world. And do not forget to pray for me. Thank you.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Celebrating International Women’s Day 2025 with Samsung UK’s Chief Customer Officer

    Source: Samsung

Deborah, thanks for being here with us today. Can you share some memorable experiences growing up that shaped who you are today?

No problem! My father was an airplane engineer and sometimes took me to his workplace where I saw all the stages that went into building an aircraft. This experience kick-started my fascination with industries that are constantly evolving and using technology to push the boundaries for what can be achieved.

What dreams and goals did you have growing up, and how did they influence your career path?
I have always been a sports fanatic – as a typical Canadian, I love skiing and ice hockey, but I also am a keen cyclist and sailed competitively for many years. I believe sports teach you passion, the importance of being a team player, and discipline – all skills that have served me well throughout my life. My love for sports led me to working for Nike previously, and in my current role, it gives me lots of opportunities to test our wellness products and features such as Samsung Health.  My favourite accessory is my Galaxy Watch!

Was there a particular turning point or pivotal experience that sparked your inspiration and set you on your current path?
Throughout my career, I’ve been attracted to brands that give their customers a better experience through innovation. I was part of the team that came up with introducing Wi-Fi connectivity at Starbucks – evolving it from a place where you can get a great cup of coffee to a space where you can connect and be productive. That experience showed me the impact innovation can have in completely transforming a business.

What motivated you to join Samsung, and how did you make the decision to become part of the team?
As someone who wants to be at the forefront of innovation, the opportunity to join Samsung was a complete no-brainer. I believe we are going through one of the most exciting phases of change in our history. The AI revolution is one of the most important technological shifts we’ll experience in our lifetime, and I’ve loved being part of the journey bringing this to customers.

Can you describe your current responsibilities at Samsung?
My role is all about putting the customer at the centre of our offering. When buying from us, our customers don’t see divisions; they see one brand. My role is to bring the strength of our ecosystem together for our customers – consumers and businesses –  so that we can help them get more out of their tech and their relationship with us..
This is done first through 360 brand campaigns and corporate storytelling that bring to life the value of our innovations to consumers. It also means working together with all our divisions and functional teams to keep enhancing all points in the consumer journey pre + post purchase. It lives in physical spaces such as our flagship retail space, Samsung KX, in London which shows the power of our ecosystem in one place, and online through our live commerce, ecommerce and social channels.

How has Samsung supported your personal and professional growth?
I am proud to be the executive sponsor of the UK ERG Women@Samsung – a brilliant collective of women who volunteer their time to make Samsung UK & Ireland a more inclusive workplace. In my first year at Samsung, I found it a warm, welcoming community and a chance to meet the inspiring women in our UK & Ireland team.

What is the most important keyword that keeps you motivated and inspired, and why does it resonate with you?
These are technically three – but I stand by ‘Power the Possible’. This can mean inspiring the best work in myself and team, as well as what we do every day when bringing our products to market. At Samsung, I believe our products help people live better lives – whether that’s running a business or a marathon!

What dreams or goals do you hope to achieve in the future, both personally and professionally?
I believe technology has the potential to achieve good in society and can level the playing field for underrepresented groups, and I  would love to do more in this space. I am a champion of our Solve for Tomorrow programme which supports and funds young people to develop their confidence and skills to use technology to solve societal problems. My ambition is for this programme to reach more young people and have even greater impact.

What advice would you like to share with the world to help them navigate their own inspiration journeys?
My advice is to build your tribe. Never underestimate the power of your network to lean on when you need coaching, inspiration or advice. Look out for networks such as Women@Samsung, or if they don’t exist build your own. There are so many brilliant women who have helped me in my career and I believe in the importance of paying it forward to the next generation.

Governor Stein, Secretary Sangvai, and Health Leaders Highlight Potential Damaging Impacts of Proposed Federal Medicaid Cuts at Charlotte Roundtable
    lsaito
    Fri, 03/07/2025 – 17:27

    Raleigh, NC

Today, Governor Josh Stein and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Dev Sangvai hosted a roundtable with health care professionals and Medicaid beneficiaries to highlight the lifesaving impacts of Medicaid and discuss the importance of protecting Medicaid funding from federal cuts.

“Protecting North Carolinians’ health care access is critically important,” said Governor Josh Stein. “I am proud of our state’s bipartisan work to expand Medicaid, and I call on that same bipartisan spirit in Congress to stand up and protect Medicaid so we can continue to provide critical care across our state.”

More than three million people across the state, or 1 in 4 North Carolinians, have affordable health coverage through NC Medicaid; including more than 640,000 North Carolinians who gained access to care in the last year under Medicaid expansion.

“New enrollees are now able to see providers and are receiving life-saving care with more than five million prescriptions being filled for conditions like heart health, seizures and diabetes,” said Secretary Sangvai. “Medicaid increases access to high quality care for individuals, children and families and is essential in our mission to create a healthier North Carolina for all.”

The roundtable discussion was hosted by Care Ring, a non-profit organization with nearly 70 years of service to individuals and families in Charlotte. Care Ring provides health services to thousands of people each year who may not otherwise have access to care. Mecklenburg County is home to more Medicaid enrollees than any other county in North Carolina.

“Medicaid expansion has enabled our team to help even more families in Charlotte access affordable, high-quality health care,” said Care Ring CEO Tchernavia Montgomery. “I thank the Governor for highlighting our organization’s critical work and raising awareness of the need to protect the health care of those who are most vulnerable and lack resources.”

Health care providers and leaders were joined by Tashenda Gibson, an early childhood care giver enrolled in NC Medicaid. She spoke about the critical care she is receiving as a new mother.

“NC Medicaid has been a life-saving component of care for me and my family,” said Tashenda Gibson. “I recently welcomed a healthy baby girl, and Medicaid helped through pregnancy, delivery and now postpartum.”

Chief Johnny Jennings also joined the conversation to highlight the positive impact of Medicaid on public safety.

“First responders are on the front lines of mental health crises,” said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings. “Providing resources for those in crisis contributes to a safer community and reduces the need for law enforcement intervention in situations stemming from untreated issues.”

The discussion comes at a time where, despite widespread support for Medicaid, Congress is proposing significant cuts to the program, which would have a devastating impact on North Carolina, including a $6 billion loss in funding for health care providers. Proposals being considered could cause more than 640,000 hardworking North Carolinians to lose their health coverage, take billions from North Carolina’s economy, drive up state costs, and cut coverage for health care services.

Other participants in the roundtable discussion included:

    • Dr. Raynard Washington, Director, Mecklenburg County Public Health Department
    • Dr. April Milan Miller, OB/GYN, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center
    • Eddie Caldwell, Director, NC Sheriffs’ Association
    • Caleb Theodros, NC State Representative, HD-41
    • Carla Cunningham, NC State Representative, HD-106

Earlier this week, Governor Stein sent a letter to North Carolina’s congressional delegation asking them to oppose any federal budget proposal that includes cuts to Medicaid. He highlighted how NC Medicaid strengthens communities, particularly in rural North Carolina with affordable health coverage and supports the workforce as well as businesses.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Lt. Governor Primavera, Serve Colorado, and the Behavioral Health Administration Join Partners to Highlight Youth Mental Health Education & Support Services

    Source: US State of Colorado

DENVER — Today, Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera joined leaders from Serve Colorado, the Schultz Family Foundation, Pinterest, Behavioral Health Administration, Colorado Community College System, and other key philanthropic organizations today for multiple school site visits and a roundtable discussion highlighting the successes and future growth of Colorado’s Youth Mental Health Corps (YMHC). The event brought together AmeriCorps members, behavioral health leaders, and community partners to discuss the initiative’s impact in its inaugural year and explore opportunities for sustainable funding.

Launched in Fall 2024, Colorado’s YMHC is a first-of-its-kind initiative that trains, recruits, and deploys AmeriCorps members as peer navigators in middle and high schools across the state. These members provide critical mental health support to students, helping connect them with resources and fostering stronger community partnerships in behavioral health. In its first year, the program deployed 127 AmeriCorps members in 15 counties, reaching over 4,500 youth.

During the roundtable, Lt. Governor Primavera reaffirmed the Polis-Primavera administration’s commitment to expanding mental health resources for young Coloradans.

“Our young people deserve access to the high-quality mental health support they need to thrive,” said Lt. Governor Primavera. “The Youth Mental Health Corps is a shining example of how we can leverage public-private partnerships to make a real difference in the lives of students across Colorado. AmeriCorps has long been a cornerstone of national service; its investment in programs like this ensures that communities have the resources and people power needed to tackle urgent challenges. We are grateful to the Schultz Family Foundation, Pinterest, Behavioral Health Administration, Colorado Community College System, and all of our partners for their dedication to this work.”

National service continues to make significant impacts on communities across Colorado on a range of vital topics. For every federal dollar invested in AmeriCorps, there is a return of up to $34.26, in addition to the profound and lasting impact on social stability and community resilience. National service also advances workforce development in key sectors across the state, including behavioral health.

The event also featured remarks from Marie Groark, managing director of programs with the Schultz Family Foundation, and Alise Marshall, Senior Global Lead for Public Affairs with Pinterest, who both emphasized the importance of sustainable investment in youth mental health initiatives.

“Access to mental health care is one of the biggest challenges facing young people today, and we believe that they must be at the forefront of shaping solutions that drive meaningful change,” said Marie Groark, managing director of the Schultz Family Foundation. “The work the State of Colorado has been doing through the Youth Mental Health Corps demonstrates the powerful impact young people can have on their communities. Not only are they directly responding to the mental health and wellness of their peers, but they are also gaining valuable experience that serves as a stepping stone into careers in the behavioral health field.”

“At Pinterest, we are deeply committed to building a positive and inspirational space for young people online. Supporting youth mental health requires everyone to leverage their collective expertise and take action together. Pinterest will continue to push tirelessly to drive this important work forward, and we are proud to partner with Colorado on the launch of their Youth Mental Health Corps. Pinterest remains committed to being a part of the solution to ensure youth, educators, and parents across the country get access to the wellbeing resources they need to live full and meaningful lives,” said Alise Marshall, Senior Director of Corporate Affairs & Social Impact for Pinterest.

YMHC members shared firsthand experiences about their work in schools, highlighting the program’s positive impact on student well-being and academic success. The roundtable also included insights from leaders in behavioral health, community colleges, and philanthropic organizations exploring ways to secure long-term funding.

As Colorado continues to lead the way in youth mental health innovation, today’s forum served as a vital step toward ensuring the program’s sustainability and future growth.

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore)
    March 07, 2025
Washington, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden joined Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Congressional and labor leaders to reintroduce the Richard L. Trumka Protecting the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act). This bipartisan legislation protects the rights of workers in Oregon and nationwide to stand together and bargain for fairer wages, better benefits, and safer workplaces. The legislation was named in honor of late AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka.
“As the son of a union machinist, I saw firsthand the difference a strong union can make in delivering the fair wages and robust workplace protections that every worker deserves,” Merkley said. “Workers across the nation are under threat by Trump and the billionaires and the big corporations he empowers. Passing the PRO Act would give America’s workers a fighting chance to improve their workplace with better pay, benefits, and safety through collectively bargaining for a better deal.”
“This legislation is very timely and essential with Donald Trump, Elon Musk and their billionaire buddies targeting workers’ most basic rights and most basic protections that were secured over decades by unions,” Wyden said. “I strongly support the PRO Act because it would protect workers’ hard-earned and historic rights to unionize and advocate for better wages, benefits and working conditions that strengthen quality of life for them, their families and our communities.”
“Americans believe in the power of unions and tens of millions of working people would become union members tomorrow if they could. But American labor law is broken, weighted on the side of the bosses and against the workers. In too many workplaces, in too many industries across the country, big corporations and billionaire CEOs still retaliate against us for organizing. They refuse to negotiate our contracts, force us to sit through hours of anti-union propaganda, and engage in illegal union-busting every day. Now they have an unelected, unaccountable, union-buster trying to illegally fire tens of thousands of our fellow workers in federal jobs and an administration rolling back the workplace protections. The PRO Act is long overdue, and the American people agree. We urge elected leaders of both parties to move this critical legislation forward so that all workers have the chance to stand together and build better lives for themselves and their families,” said AFL-CIO President and Oregonian Liz Shuler.
Large corporations and the wealthy continue to capture the rewards of a growing economy while working families and middle-class Americans are left behind. From 1979 to 2023, annual wages for the bottom 90 percent of households increased just 44 percent, while average incomes for the wealthiest 1 percent increased more than 180 percent.
Unions are critical to increasing wages and creating a strong economy that rewards hardworking people. Through the power of collective bargaining, the typical union worker earns 16 percent more than the typical non-union worker.
The American people’s support for unions is surging. According to a 2024 Gallup poll, 70 percent of Americans approve of labor unions — remaining at near record highs. Despite growing support for unions, billionaire- and special interest-funded attacks on the rights of workers, unions and labor laws have eroded union density and made it harder for workers to organize. The share of American workers who are union members has fallen from roughly one in three workers in 1956 to a new low of 9.9 percent in 2024. The PRO Act restores fairness to the economy by strengthening the federal law that protects the right of workers to join a union and bargain for higher pay, better benefits and safer workplaces.
The PRO Act would protect the right to organize and collectively bargain by:
Bolstering remedies and punishing violations of the rights of workers through authorizing meaningful penalties for employers that violate their rights, strengthening support for workers who suffer retaliation for exercising their rights and authorizing a private right of action for violation of the rights of workers.
Strengthening the rights of workers to join together and negotiate for better working conditions by enhancing their right to support secondary boycotts, ensuring unions can collect “fair share” fees, modernizing the union election process and facilitating initial collective bargaining agreements.
Restoring fairness to an economy rigged against workers by closing loopholes that allow employers to misclassify their employees as supervisors and independent contractors and increasing transparency in labor-management relations.
Merkley, Wyden, and Sanders introduced the legislation alongside Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senators Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), Andy Kim (D-N.J.), Angus King (I-Maine), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).
In the House, Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), and House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) led 210 Democratic and Republican cosponsors.
Additionally, more than 18 organizations endorsed the PRO Act, including the AFL-CIO, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), United Autoworkers (UAW), United Steelworkers (USW), Communications Workers of America (CWA), National Nurses United (NNU), International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO (DPE), National Postal Mail Handlers Union (NPMHU), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART), the American Federation of Musicians, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA), Transport Workers Union (TWU), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT).

  • MIL-OSI USA: Tuberville Continues Advocating to Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Tommy Tuberville (Alabama)
“It’s time for America to move forward and stop falling back.”
WASHINGTON – As Americans prepare to “spring forward” this weekend,U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) spoke on the floor about the many benefits of making Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanent at the federal level. Sen. Tuberville has helped introduce the Sunshine Protection Act in the 117th, 118th, and 119th congresses.
Nineteen states—including Alabama—have passed legislation to make DST permanent, but it must first be made permanent at the federal level.
Read Sen. Tuberville’s remarks below or on YouTube or Rumble.

“Well, it’s that time again. I think I’ve given this speech three or four times in the last few years.
This weekend, all of America and my constituents back in Alabama will spring forward to Daylight Saving Time. And I’m working very hard to make this hopefully, possibly the last time that we move our clocks. I recently joined my colleague, Senator Rick Scott, to reintroduce, for the third time, the Sunshine Protection Act to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, at the federal level.
Out of all the legislative efforts that I’ve been part of in my four years here in Congress, the thing I hear about the most from my people in Alabama is their desire to lock the clock. Daylight Saving Time should be a thing of the past—because it literally is a thing of the past.
First, introduced as a temporary measure during World War I, Daylight Saving Time was originally called, ‘Wartime.’ And it was a way to help conserve fuel during a very different time in this country. Following the end of World War I, in 1918, [the] Standard Time Act was enacted that discontinued Daylight Saving Time nationally, but individual states continued to spring forward and fall back.
Then during World War II, there was a renewed federal push for full-time Daylight Saving Time, which then was repealed in 1945. Finally, in 1966, Congress passed legislation to establish national standards for Daylight Saving Time.
All of this to say, changes to our clock might have made sense when it first began many, many years ago. For one, the American workforce culture and lifestyles are vastly different than they were a hundred years ago. Plus, disruptive time change can have serious consequences on human health. Studies have suggested that the disruption of sleep patterns due to the time changes increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and physical injuries. Northwestern Medicine found that the fallback and the spring forward are connected to a 6% spike in fatal car accidents and a 24% higher risk of heart attacks. […] Additionally, the long-term health effects linked to Daylight Saving Time include weight gain, cluster headaches, and depression. The time switch in the fall increases Seasonal Affective Disorder every single year. And a study published in 2017 found that the transition from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time increase the number of hospital visits for depression by 11%.
By making Daylight Saving Time permanent, Americans would enjoy more sunshine in the evenings. This is so important for many Americans who may not get a chance to get outside during the day. It would allow hard working Americans to go on a run after work or enable dads to play with their kids outdoors, neighbors grill and do things together outside. What a thought? Many studies have proven that extra sunlight in the evening can lead to improvements in mental health, physical fitness, economic growth, and well-being.
As a founding member of the Senate MAHA Caucus, I am very passionate about helping make Americans healthy again. An important part of this is making sure people get enough sleep and more sunlight. Did you know that Vitamin D from the sun is linked to preventing many diseases including cancer? It’s true, and many Americans don’t get nearly enough of Vitamin D, especially those who work at desk jobs and are inside for most of the day, and that has increased since the invention of what we call the computer. Locking the clock is an important first step to helping Americans live healthier lives. It’s a simple way we could positively impact the day-to-day life of all Americans. Our farmers are also greatly affected by Daylight Saving Time as additional sunshine during working hours means more time to work in the fields, which could translate into a more profitable bottom line for anybody that raises a crop. All you know, I’m all about helping our great farmers.
More daylight in the evening could also decrease expensive energy consumption on farms by reducing the need for artificial lighting and heating. Back in the 1970s, we had an energy crisis. And we kept Daylight Saving Time because it saved millions and millions of gallons of fuel. Experts believe that the time change twice a year costs the U.S. economy more than 434 million dollars in lost productivity annually.
It’s clear the evidence points to one conclusion, make Daylight Saving Time permanent. Nineteen states, including my state of Alabama, have already voted on past legislation to make Daylight Saving Time permanent. They just need Congress, which means us, to vote for it. If we vote for it, it changes, and we’d never have to move the clock again.
President Trump has also expressed support for locking the clock. Congress should listen to the people and pass the Sunshine Protection Act to make Daylight Saving Time permanent. The change would improve our health, strengthen our economy and benefit our farmers. This is a no brainer.
It’s time for America to move forward and stop falling back. I’m looking forward to working with my Senate colleagues to get it completely across the finish line, to lock the clock once and for all.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Labrador Letter – Trump Admin Halts EMTALA Lawsuit Against Idaho

    Source: US State of Idaho

    Dear Friends,
I’m pleased to share the Trump Department of Justice dismissed the previous administration’s attack on Idaho’s Defense of Life Act.  I have been fighting against the Biden Administration’s twisted interpretation of federal statutes to keep individual states from enacting pro-life laws for the last two years, and this dismissal is a welcome relief.  It shows we finally have an administration that respects the principles of Federalism and the sovereignty of states to enact their own laws and set their own standards.
As a quick background, the Biden Administration sued Idaho’s Defense of Life Act in 2023, following the overturn of Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs decision.  Idaho’s law says that abortions were not permitted unless in cases of rape, incest, or where the life of the mother was in jeopardy.  The Idaho Supreme Court went on to clarify our law, saying that the decision to perform an abortion in an emergency situation was left to a doctor’s subjective, good-faith medical judgement, and that a danger to the mother’s life did not need to be either imminent nor did the doctor need to be certain.
Instead of respecting the SCOTUS decision to put the issue of abortion back under state control, the Biden Administration manipulated a federal statute on the books, known as EMTALA – the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act.  Biden’s DOJ insisted that providing abortions was a mandated function of any emergency room that accepts federal Medicaid payments.   EMTALA was designed to prevent hospitals from turning away patients who could not pay.  In fact, EMTALA language does not mention abortion.  Instead, the federal law refers to providing stabilizing treatment for both a mother and her unborn child – five times, actually.  Undeterred by reality, the Biden Administration pressed forward with a legal challenge to Idaho’s law, leading to the first Supreme Court showdown on abortion laws since the Dobbs decision.
Last April, we fought the federal government to a standstill at the Supreme Court in Idaho v. United States, leaving Idaho’s law virtually intact.  We maintained there is absolutely no conflict between Idaho’s law and EMTALA, where the goal of both is to save lives.  SCOTUS remanded the case back to the 9th Circuit for more arguments since it was demonstrated there was no actual emergency circumstances claimed by the federal government that would require an abortion to stabilize a patient that would be somehow disallowed by Idaho’s very clear and straightforward law.
But then November Fifth happened.  President Trump won a decisive victory across the country and pro-abortion activists and their attorneys began to worry that a new Department of Justice might not support the same creative interpretations of federal law that the Biden Administration had hung their hat on.  It turns out they were right.  This Wednesday, under the new leadership of Attorney General Pam Bondi, the DOJ filed for a dismissal of the challenge of Idaho’s Defense of Life Act.  Idaho responded in kind by filing to dismiss our appeal that is sitting at the 9th Circuit.  I wish I could say that’s where the story ends, but in the legal profession, that is rarely the circumstance.
Those same pro-abortion activists, lawyers and providers saw the writing on the wall.  Six days before President Trump’s inauguration they filed a similar challenge to Idaho’s law, led by St. Luke’s Health System.  St. Luke’s claimed they would suffer irreparable harm by having to instruct their doctors that Idaho’s law directs them to treat patients in emergencies without abortions unless necessary to save a woman’s life, according to a doctor’s subjective, good-faith medical judgement.
This new suit from St. Luke’s is ongoing and is being heard by the very same Clinton-appointed federal judge that had blocked Idaho’s Defense of Life Act with the first EMTALA challenge from the Biden Administration.  I have every reasonable expectation that we will need to continue this fight via appeal, all the way back to the Supreme Court so we can settle this issue of EMTALA once and for all.
As your Attorney General, I will always fight to protect the sovereignty of Idaho’s laws, the voice of the people, and for the protection of the unborn.  Through our laws, Idaho has chosen Life and I am proud to defend it, wherever that fight takes us.
    Best regards,

    Source: Doctors Without Borders –

In 2024, wars in Gaza, Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, and beyond forced millions to flee, leaving destruction and despair in their wake. Women, often bearing the heaviest burden of displacement, have had to navigate violence, loss, and uncertainty—all while caring for their families and communities.

For International Women’s Day on March 8, four artists have brought to life the stories of four displaced women, as shared by MSF staff in places affected by war. Through art, they have transformed these experiences into powerful visual narratives.

Ezdihar and Maya: Fear passed across generations in Lebanon

Ezdihar Al Diqar fled the southern suburbs of Beirut with her two children after an airstrike warning from Israel during the war in Lebanon in September 2024. Their first night was spent on the streets before moving to the Azarieh shelter in downtown Beirut. For weeks after, she was still living in fear, as explosions continue just a mile away. Her 14-year-old daughter, Maya, has been forced to grow up too fast amid war and uncertainty.

Amina and Amany: A journey of endless displacement

In the dead of night, Amina—a Syrian grandmother—fled Homs on a motorcycle with her son, guiding her eight family members across a river for six grueling hours after the announcement of the fall of the previous Syrian government on December 8, 2024. Out of fear of violence and uncertainty, many Syrians and Lebanese living in Syria crossed to Lebanon. Amina was forced to urgently leave her home and to discard their clothes and blankets along the way. While crossing the river, they arrived in Lebanon with nothing but fear and exhaustion.

Khadija*, a mother from Gaza, believed her family was in a safe place—until the tanks arrived. In an instant, a shell exploded between them, leaving her son severely injured. At the hospital, she held back tears as her son asked, “Mama, why are they covering Baba’s eyes?”

Her husband was gone. Her son, in shock, didn’t speak for 10 days.

As war broke out in Khartoum, Amira* was days away from giving birth. Three days into the conflict, she delivered her baby in a hospital in Bahri, Khartoum North, only to lose him hours later. Weakened from a painful cesarean section and left without medical care, she resorted to cleaning her wound with hand sanitizer—her only option for survival.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Murphy: Six Weeks In, This White House Is On Its Way To Being The Most Corrupt In U.S. History

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Connecticut – Chris Murphy

    [embedded content]

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Thursday spoke on the U.S. Senate floor to expose the unprecedented corruption of the Trump administration’s first six weeks in office. Murphy condemned Trump’s normalization of pay-to-play politics, where billionaire donors dictate policy and taxpayer money is funneled into the pockets of the president, Elon Musk, and the corporate elite.

“In the first six weeks of the Trump presidency, Trump and Elon Musk and their billionaire friends have engaged in a stunning rampage of open public corruption,” Murphy said. “It’s not fundamentally different than what happened in Russia. These are efforts to steal from the American people to enrich themselves. And their strategy is to do it all out in the open, to do it at such a dizzying pace that the country just gets overwhelmed or anesthetized or dulled into a sense that we just all have to accept the corruption – or, maybe more charitably, that this is just how government works, that government is just corrupt, and so the fact that it’s happening out in the open instead of happening secretly, well, it’s really nothing new.”

Murphy laid out more than 20 examples of blatant corruption from just the first six weeks of the Trump presidency, including:

    1. The launch of Trump’s meme coin, enabling anyone seeking to influence the administration to privately funnel money directly to the president.
    2. The gutting and manipulation of watchdog agencies like the NLRB, CFPB, and OSHA to benefit Elon Musk, the billionaires in Trump’s cabinet, and other elites.
    3. The Eric Adams quid pro quo and the weaponization of the DOJ to reinforce a system of political retribution and favoritism.
    4. The use of government contracts and stock deals to reward Trump’s allies, enriching them through taxpayer-funded opportunities and further consolidating political power.

“This is how democracies die,” Murphy continued. “Democracies die when the very powerful people steal from us so regularly, so openly, so unapologetically, that we come to believe that it’s normal. And listen, I understand that many Americans may think that all of this stuff just used to happen quietly, and the only difference is that Trump and Musk are just putting it all out in the open. And I’m not saying that there haven’t been instances of corruption. Democrats and Republicans in this body have been accused of, and convicted of, acts of corruption. It has been a fact of life in American politics for a long time. But never before has the corruption happened this openly or this frequently. And so I lay it all out for you this afternoon in the hopes that it is not too late for us to decide to stand up, as a body and as a nation, to say that this isn’t okay.”

He concluded: “The Trump meme coin is not okay. It’s not okay for people who have interest before the federal government to be able to anonymously funnel money to the president of the United States. It’s not okay for Elon Musk to have access to Department of Labor enforcement data, against him or his competitors, that nobody else gets access to. It’s not okay to just cancel contracts that were going to Musk’s competitors and substitute in his own business, just because he has the ability to do it as a friend of Donald Trump. The rule of law matters. Doing things by the rules matter. This level of corruption was not occurring behind the scenes prior. It is not just that the cover got pulled off of it all. And it’s our decision, as a body and as a country, to decide not to normalize this scale of corruption.”

A full transcript of his remarks can be found below:

MURPHY: “Mr. President, I’m a big Boston Red Sox fan. One of the most famous players in Red Sox recent history is Manny Ramirez. Manny Ramirez was a good baseball player, but he had a habit of doing some pretty ridiculous things on the field and off the field that were really detrimental to the team, some really bizarre on-field behavior – cutting off throws from other outfielders before they got to the infield – bizarre off-the-field behavior that disrupted the team. It became so regular that a phrase was adopted among the Red Sox fans: ‘That’s just Manny being Manny.’ Over the years it just was accepted that every year Manny Ramirez was going to do a whole bunch of stuff that was really detrimental to the team. And over time, it just kind of became accepted, that that was a fact of life, a way of life with Manny Ramirez. And as time went on, people reacted less hostilely. It barely got noticed in some cases when he was engaged in these detrimental forms of conduct.

“And I tell that story because it stands for kind of a universal concept: when bad behavior gets normalized, it no longer feels like bad behavior. Even if that behavior is hurting people. Today, the world is littered with corrupt governments, governments where the leaders and the really rich men who surround the leaders – the oligarchs – steal from people. That’s what they do, the leaders and the leaders’ friends just keep a hand constantly in the government treasury and they steal taxpayer dollars. They rig the rules of the economy in order to make themselves fabulously rich. They hurt the citizens of those countries.

“Vladimir Putin, for instance, has never had a job outside of government, but he’s reportedly worth $200 billion. One of his many houses cost $1.4 billion to build, supposedly the landscaping costs on an annual basis for that house are $2 million alone. That $1.4 billion house was paid for by money he stole from the Russian treasury. In other words, he stole it from the Russian people. Putin and his friends have been doing it for so long and doing it so openly and brazenly – Putin, for instance, wears a watch that retails for half a million dollars, even though his official salary is only $140,000. They’ve been doing this so openly and brazenly, they’re so public in their corruption in Russia, that it’s just accepted. It’s just mainstream, the fact that Putin and his cronies steal from the Russian people.

“That’s what’s happening in America today. And it’s heartbreaking for me to say this, but in the first six weeks of the Trump presidency, Trump and Elon Musk and their billionaire friends have engaged in a stunning rampage of open public corruption. It’s not fundamentally different than what happened in Russia. These are efforts to steal from the American people to enrich themselves. And their strategy is to do it all out in the open, to do it at such a dizzying pace that the country just gets overwhelmed or anesthetized or dulled into a sense that we just all have to accept the corruption – or, maybe more charitably, that this is just how government works, that government is just corrupt, and so the fact that it’s happening out in the open instead of happening secretly, well, it’s really nothing new.

“But this is not how government works. The things that have happened over the last six weeks are unprecedented. The president and his billionaire friends are not supposed to steal from us. They are not supposed to use their power and their access to power – their access to government levers – to rig the rules to enrich themselves. That has always been wrong. It is still wrong. And we do not have to accept this.

“And so in the next few minutes, I want to try out an exercise. I want to try to lay out for you as quickly as I can just some of the most significant instances of blatantly corrupt activity that’s happened in just the first six weeks of Trump’s presidency. When you see it all together, there is no way to avoid a simple conclusion. This White House is on its way to being the most corrupt in the history of the country. And just because they are doing it out in the open for everybody to see doesn’t mean that it’s not corrupt.

“My hope is that if you see it all in one place, the gravity of this moment may hit you. My hope is that my colleagues and the public choose not to normalize a president or his advisors using the Oval Office as a blunt mechanism to make themselves even wealthier. It is our decision – our decision – to have zero tolerance for corruption. It’s also our decision to just decide to become a place like Russia where our leaders are allowed to routinely steal from us.

“This is a heartbreakingly long list. This is just 20 or so examples of corrupt behavior in the first six weeks of the Trump presidency. So here it goes. We’re going to start on January 17.

“On January 17, Trump launches the meme coin. This is maybe the most corrupt of all of the acts, because what is the meme coin? The meme coin is essentially a mechanism by which Russian oligarchs or corporate CEO’s can literally send money privately directly to Donald Trump. Nobody knows who buys the meme coin, but Trump makes money when people buy it. And so it is just an open sewer valve that allows for anybody who is trying to influence the Trump administration to be able to secretly funnel money to Donald Trump. He reserves 80% of the coin. He waits to release that coin until the price jumps back up again, which essentially means he’s waiting for people who want favors from him to buy a bunch of the coin to inflate the value so that he releases more and makes more money. It’s a disgusting kind of corruption because this is essentially Trump just posting his Venmo for anybody secretly to wire him as much money as they want. We’ve never seen something like this before where anybody who has anything to gain from the Trump administration, through a manipulation of the value of Trump’s meme coin, can funnel money directly to the president, whisper in his ear, ‘That was me. That was me that purchased all that coin, that jumped up the value that allowed you to release new coin. Hey, take care of me on the back end.’

“On January 20, when he’s sworn in, he institutes his new energy agenda. Now, open reporting suggested that during the campaign he met with the oil and gas industry and they cut a deal in which the oil and gas industry would give him a billion dollars of campaign contributions in order to receive favorable treatment when Trump was sworn in. And guess what happens on January 20? Trump unveils his energy strategy, and what does it do? It preferences oil and gas and it punishes oil and gas’ competitors. It, for instance, freezes all permits on wind projects, both for the land and the sea. It undercuts permitting processes, not for oil and gas but for oil and gas’ competitors. Oil and gas got exactly what they asked for. They gave a campaign contribution and they got the favorable treatment. Five days later, Trump fires 17 inspectors general. What do inspectors general do? They look for corruption inside of these agencies. What do you do if you are trying to engage in corruption, if you are trying to steal from the American people? You fire the inspectors general.

“Two days later, on January 27, Trump fires Gwynne Wilcox from the NLRB, the National Labor Relations Board. When she’s fired, the National Labor Relations Board cannot function any longer? Why does this matter? Because the person that’s been put in charge of reviewing the hirings and firings of these agencies is Elon Musk, who, by the way, has lots of cases before the NLRB. So do the people that are standing behind Trump during the inauguration. Almost all of them have active cases before the NLRB. The billionaires supporting Donald Trump now don’t have to worry about the NLRB because on January 27, the NLRB is rendered powerless.

“Three days later, on January 30, Trump awards more than $800,000 worth of stock to several of the board members of the Trump Media and Technology Group. This is the publicly traded company behind his social media platform. So now his Cabinet members – people like Kash Patel and Linda Mcmahon – are owning equity in Trump’s media platform; equity that can be cashed out, sold to people who want to buy them out of their interest at any time. Those people who might want to buy them out, Cabinet members, could be individuals with issues before the Department of Education, before the FBI. Yet another avenue in which people who have influence, who want to gain influence inside the Trump administration, have a conduit to be able to move cash from their pocketbooks, from their treasury, from their bank accounts, into the bank accounts of Trump cabinet members.

“Shortly thereafter, we start to see the weaponization of the DOJ. On February 23, a civil complaint from DOJ that had been pending against SpaceX– Elon Musk’s signature company – is dropped. Eight days later, the DOJ drops a case against a Republican Congressman. On February 19, two or three weeks later, the DOJ opens up something called Operation Whirlwind, which threatens anyone who dares to criticize the work of Elon Musk and DOGE. Over the course of the next three weeks, the DOJ is turned into an entity that drops cases against those who are loyal to Donald Trump and pursues aggressively investigations against those who are trying to criticize Donald Trump.

“On February 1, Trump fires the director of the CFPB and announces plans to shut down – to shutter – the Consumer Financial Protection Board. Again, very much like the NLRB, this is an agency that was, at the moment that it was rendered powerless, investigating Elon Musk and many of the biggest financial backers of Donald Trump. So once again, those that have access to Donald Trump, the billionaires that are close to him, now don’t have to worry about labor violations being investigated by the NLRB, now they don’t have to worry about consumer protection actions being taken against them by the CFPB.

“On February 4, there is the first of two extraordinary meetings in the White House in which Donald Trump convenes his business partners – his business patterns – the Saudi Golf League and the PGA to try to negotiate a solution to the dispute between those two golf leagues. Why? Because Trump has a business interest in that dispute being resolved. The Saudi Golf League plays tournaments at Trump’s courses in the United States, so if the White House, using its official power, can try to negotiate a settlement between those two groups, Trump stands to make money.

“On February 6, something absolutely stunning happens. Pam Bondi, the AG, issues a memorandum in which she proposes to dull the criminal enforcement of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

If you are representing a foreign government before the United States, you have to register so that we know if you are acting on behalf of American interests or you are acting on behalf of foreign interests. In the prior Trump administration, Trump officials got in big trouble for secretly working for, and getting paid by, foreign governments without registering. Well, what does Trump announce? That they are going to limit the applicability of the enforcement of that statute, making it much easier for Trump’s friends – for his MAGA crowd, for the people who show up to Mar-a-Lago – to get paid quietly by foreign governments in order to influence Donald Trump.

“On February 10, maybe aside from the meme coin, the most stunning act of corruption: the Eric Adams quid pro quo, in which Eric Adams, indicted for corruption, is let off the hook. His charges are dismissed in exchange for the mayor’s pledge of political loyalty to Donald Trump. They literally went on TV and announced the deal that we’re getting rid of the charges against Eric Adams, as long as the mayor pledges political loyalty to the President. That was so corrupt that six or seven DOJ officials resigned, because they refused to withdraw those charges, but the deal went through because the seventh, or the eighth, or the ninth official finally filed the withdrawal.

“And now in America, it is 100% clear that if you want to get away with corruption, if you want to steal from your constituents and you’re an elected official in this country, all you have to do is just sign up for political loyalty with Donald Trump, and he will instruct the Department of Justice to let you get away with it.

“On February 10, Donald Trump directs the DOJ to pause enforcement of U.S. laws that prohibit companies from paying bribes overseas. Come on! Like, come on! He instructs the DOJ to pause enforcement of U.S. laws that prohibit companies to pay bribes overseas. Here’s an example: Goldman Sachs was engaged in outright bribery–they were paying bribes to Malaysian officials, so that they could get a contract to manage the resources of the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund.

“American companies should not be overseas bribing foreign governments. That compromises America’s reputation and America’s national security. But now, we are going to pause enforcement of the laws that stop American companies from bribing foreign governments, because corruption is now being normalized. This is what you do if you want to normalize corruption, is that you make it legal for American companies to engage in corruption overseas. That makes it easier for Trump to get away with corruption here.

“Two days later, on February 12, the announcement comes out that the State Department is going to buy $400 million of armored Teslas. Okay, so now it’s getting even more blatant. It’s getting even more brazen. The State Department is just going to buy a whole bunch of product from Elon Musk, product they were not previously scheduled to buy. It is true that the Biden administration had a blueprint that was going to buy some electric vehicles, but it was around $483,000-worth of vehicles. Trump revises that blueprint of spending so that now the federal government is going to spend $400 million on armored Teslas from Elon Musk.

“Let’s see: that’s February 12. That same day, Elon Musk’s people infiltrate the Department of Labor. And reporting suggests that during that infiltration, Elon Musk’s personal representatives get access to enforcement information at OSHA, not only against Elon Musk’s companies–and by the way, SpaceX has an employee injury rate that is nine times higher than the industry average–but also workplace safety violations against Elon Musk’s competitors. Here’s the message: if you are close to Donald Trump personally, if you support him politically, you can get secret access to enforcement data against your companies and your companies’ competitors. That’s what happens on February 12.

“Three days later, there’s some suspicious firings at the FDA. Again, related to Elon Musk’s personal financial interests. Elon Musk owns a medical device company called Neuralink. It is currently being reviewed by the FDA. And guess what? On February 15 and 16, all over a weekend, there are 20 people fired from the FDA’s Office of Neurological and Physical Medicine Devices. Fired by DOGE, run by Elon Musk. Clear message: you’re going to get fired if you aren’t on the right side of Elon Musk’s application. Now, whether that was explicit or not, if the guy who is firing you has a pending application before your department, aren’t you going to think twice? Aren’t you going to think twice about ruling against his interests? This is why this is all unprecedented. Again, this feels normal because it’s been happening every day. But never before in American history have we allowed someone who has a pending application for approval of a medicine or a medical device to be able to personally decide who gets hired and who gets fired at the regulatory agency making the decision over that medical device.

“But now, this stuff is happening every day. Because on February 15 as well, that same weekend, there’s an announcement that the FDA cuts are going to be even deeper, perhaps as big as 50%. That means that hundreds of drugs and devices won’t get approved at the FDA. And you know who benefits from that? The folks that are selling the snake oil products. And guess who’s selling the snake oil products? The people who work for Donald Trump, selling vita-gummy scams. The Director of the FBI is selling vaccine reversal pills. When the FDA gets gutted, it’s the people who sell those unregulated products who stand to gain.

“On February 19, four days later, we find out that the IRS is going to be cut by 7,000 people. And the biggest chunk of the folks who are going to be laid off are the people who do the audits of the billionaires, and the millionaires, and the corporations. And so once again, Elon Musk and the people standing behind Donald Trump on Inauguration Day are going to get off, because the IRS just had its enforcement powers–its audit powers–absolutely gutted.”

“That same day, on February 19, you start to receive word that advertising on Elon Musk’s platform is starting to grow again. And the reporting on February 19 indicates that American companies have come to the collective decision that they need to keep advertising on Elon Musk’s platform, because Elon Musk has so much regulatory power inside the federal government. That they need to make sure they’re paying Musk through Twitter and through X, so that if they ultimately need something from the federal government, they can get it. This, again, is why we have never, ever in the history of this country, allowed for the richest man in the world, somebody who controls major companies, to also have an official position inside the government. Because, of course, of course, it opens up these clear avenues where people are going to do business with him privately to try to curry favor with him publicly.

“I’m not done. It just keeps going. The next day, on February 20, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’s monthly meeting is canceled and not rescheduled. And so we were very worried that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who makes money off of his attacks on vaccines, would continue those attacks when he took over HHS. Because if faith in vaccines continues to plummet, it is very likely that RFK Jr. will make money. Why? Because the not-for-profit that he will likely return to, the company that he will return to after he leaves, makes money as vaccine misinformation spreads, and he also continues to collect fees for referring cases to a company that handles claims of personal injury due to vaccines. And so when the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is canceled, it is a clear indication that yes, this campaign of assault on vaccines is going to continue, which, not surprisingly, is likely to make RFK Jr. even more money.

“On February 26, we see Trump’s MAGA hats, that are for sale on his website, displayed in the Oval Office. And it’s just a reminder that so many people inside Trump’s universe continue to sell merchandise on the side in order to make money. Donald Trump has always done this, and we’ve just accepted it, even though it is a kind of corruption in and of itself. But Kash Patel, the Director of the FBI, is still selling Kash-branded merchandise even while he’s going to run the FBI. Elon Musk and others are selling DOGE merchandise. So as they trumpet their brand inside the government, they’re making money off their brand outside of the government.

“On February 26, maybe the third-most significant [instance] of brazen corruption happens. News breaks that Elon Musk is just going to have the FAA cancel a contract with Verizon that has been in the works for years, and instead just substitute in Starlink for Verizon. Just extraordinary that this is happening in plain view of everybody. Elon Musk takes his private company, uses his access to government to just shove out of the way his competitors, and instead insert himself and his company. Again, we’ve never seen this ever before in American history, and now it’s happening on a daily basis.

“And now we get to this week. This week, Wired reports that guests are paying millions of dollars to dine with Donald Trump at Mar-A-Lago, and business leaders are being targeted with advertisements that sell access to a one-on-one meeting with the President of the United States for $5 million. Come on! Like, seriously! There’s advertisements that say if you’re a business CEO and you pay $5 million to Donald Trump, you can get a meeting with him. This isn’t okay! And yet, because it happens every single day, every single day they’re asking for us to pretend that this is normal. This is just six weeks. It’s just six weeks. And the last thing on the list is an offer to meet with the president for $1 million or $5 million. If any previous president had sent out an advertisement suggesting that you can meet with them for a payment to them of $1 million to $5 million, in and of itself we would deem that to be unacceptable. But Donald Trump and Elon Musk believe that because they have arranged this dizzying pace of corruption, in which not a day goes by in which something doesn’t happen inside our government in which Elon Musk or Donald Trump use their power in order to rig the rules to enrich themselves, that we are all going to feel that it’s normal.

“This is how democracies die. Democracies die when the very powerful people steal from us so regularly, so openly, so unapologetically, that we come to believe that it’s normal. And so I lay it all out for you this afternoon in the hopes that it is not too late for us to decide to stand up, as a body and as a nation, to say that this isn’t okay.

“The Trump meme coin is not okay. And it’s our decision, as a body and as a country, to decide not to normalize this scale of corruption. I yield the floor.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Senator Hassan Presses FDA Commissioner Nominee to Lower Prescription Drug Costs and Protect Reproductive Health Care Medication

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for New Hampshire Maggie Hassan
WASHINGTON – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan questioned Dr. Marty Makary, President Trump’s nominee to be Commissioner of the FDA, at a hearing in the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Senator Hassan pushed Dr. Makary to work with Congress to lower prescription drug costs for Granite Staters and Americans and protect access to life-saving medications that help manage reproductive health care, including abortion and miscarriage care.
To watch Senator Hassan’s hearing questions, click here.
“President Trump has promised to help lower costs, but prescription drug prices are once again skyrocketing for Granite Staters and all Americans. In 2025, drug makers have increased the list prices of over 500 common medications,” said Senator Hassan. She then encouraged Dr. Makary to work with her to speed up the approval of generic drugs at FDA to lower costs for patients, including through her bipartisan Increasing Transparency in Generic Drug Applications Act.
Senator Hassan then moved on to address access to mifepristone – an essential drug used to manage miscarriages and medication abortion that is being threatened by Republicans across the country. Senator Hassan pressed Dr. Makary to acknowledge the safety and efficacy of the life-saving drug. “I shared with you that study…where scientists looked at – just so people know – over 100 studies of medication abortion, and found that the literature is clear that mifepristone is safe and effective,” said Senator Hassan.
Senator Hassan pressed Dr. Makary to ensure that he will not cave to political pressure to ban mifepristone: “The concern is whether you are going to unilaterally overrule the data that currently exists for political purposes, and for political reasons. And that’s what we’re looking for your reassurance on… We need to know that when you say you’re an independent scientist, that’s really what you mean, and then when the politics get heated around abortion that you won’t abandon that independence.”
Senator Hassan has been a leader in standing up for a woman’s fundamental freedom to make her own reproductive health care decisions. She has also worked on a bipartisan basis to lower prescription drug costs for Americans, introducing bipartisan legislation that would streamline the FDA approval process and allow generic drugs to get to market faster. Senator Hassan also passed into law three bipartisan measures to increase access to generic and biosimilar medications. Additionally, Senator Hassan successfully pushed to cap insulin costs for those on Medicare as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, which became law in 2022.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Padilla Cosponsors Bipartisan, Bicameral Legislation to Protect the Rights of American Workers to Organize

    US Senate News:

Padilla Cosponsors Bipartisan, Bicameral Legislation to Protect the Rights of American Workers to Organize

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) joined Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and a bipartisan group of Senate and House colleagues in introducing the Richard L. Trumka Protecting the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act), comprehensive labor legislation to protect the rights of workers to stand together and bargain for fairer wages, better benefits, and safer workplaces. The legislation was renamed in honor of former AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka.

The American people’s support for unions is surging. According to a 2024 Gallup poll, 70 percent of Americans approve of labor unions — remaining at near record highs. Despite this growing support, billionaire- and special interest-funded attacks on the rights of workers, unions, and labor laws have eroded union density and made it harder for workers to organize. The share of American workers who are union members has fallen from roughly one in three workers in 1956 to a new low of around one in 10 in 2024. The PRO Act restores fairness to the economy by strengthening the federal law that protects the right of workers to join a union and bargain for higher pay, better benefits, and safer workplaces.

The legislation is led by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Representative Bobby Scott (D-Va.-03), alongside Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.-08), House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.-05), and Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.). It is cosponsored by every Democratic Senator.

“As Donald Trump and Elon Musk take a chainsaw to the federal workforce and longstanding labor guardrails, the right to unionize is under attack,” said Senator Padilla. “Every worker deserves access to the protections offered by unions, which help level the playing field and fight against corrupt corporate power grabs by Trump’s billionaire donors. Unions help workers achieve improved working conditions, living wages, and broader benefits. I am committed to ensuring Congress does its part to protect workers and make it easier for them to bargain for fair compensation for their work. That starts with finally passing the PRO Act.”

“Never before in the history of our nation have income and wealth inequality been greater than today. Workers are falling further and further behind. In response, millions of Americans have expressed their desire to join a union,” said Senator Sanders. “However, the billionaire class is fighting with all its might to put down attempts by workers to exercise their constitutional right to unionize. That includes the decision by President Trump to illegally fire National Labor Relations Board Member Gwynne Wilcox and effectively shut down the NLRB. Without a functioning NLRB, corporate bosses can illegally fire unionizing workers, flagrantly violate labor laws and render free and fair union elections near impossible. Supporting the immediate reinstatement of Member Wilcox and the swift passage of the PRO Act would be major steps toward building real worker power. The PRO Act is long overdue and I am proud to be introducing this bill in the Senate.”

We urge elected leaders of both parties to move this critical legislation forward so that all workers have the chance to stand together and build better lives for themselves and their families,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler.

Large corporations and the wealthy continue to reap the rewards of a growing economy while working families and middle-class Americans are left behind.

Specifically, the PRO Act would protect the right to organize and collectively bargain by:

    • Bolstering remedies and punishing violations of the rights of workers through authorizing meaningful penalties for employers that violate their rights, strengthening support for workers who suffer retaliation for exercising their rights, and authorizing a private right of action for violation of the rights of workers.
    • Strengthening the rights of workers to join together and negotiate for better working conditions by enhancing their right to support secondary boycotts, ensuring unions can collect “fair share” fees, modernizing the union election process, and facilitating initial collective bargaining agreements.
    • Restoring fairness to an economy rigged against workers by closing loopholes that allow employers to misclassify their employees as supervisors and independent contractors and increasing transparency in labor-management relations.

Organizations endorsing the PRO Act include the AFL-CIO, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), United Autoworkers (UAW), United Steelworkers (USW), Communications Workers of America (CWA), National Nurses United (NNU), International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO (DPE), National Postal Mail Handlers Union (NPMHU), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART), the American Federation of Musicians, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA), Transport Workers Union (TWU), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT).

Senator Padilla is a longtime advocate for protecting workers’ rights and fighting for their safety. Padilla recently introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation to ensure that truckers are compensated fairly for the hours that they are on the clock, including overtime. Last month, Padilla joined every Democratic senator and a bipartisan group of 213 Representatives in urging President Trump to immediately reinstate National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Member Gwynne Wilcox and restore the NLRB’s ability to protect the rights of American workers to organize and collectively bargain. In 2023, Padilla announced the Asunción Valdivia Heat, Illness, Injury and Fatality Prevention Act to protect the safety and health of workers who are exposed to dangerous heat conditions in the workplace. He also cosponsored a pair of bills to hold companies who engage in union busting activities accountable and to protect striking workers’ access to health care. Additionally, he introduced the Fairness for Farm Workers Act, legislation to update the nation’s labor laws to ensure farm workers receive fairer wages and compensation. Padilla previously cosponsored the Nationwide Right to Unionize Act, legislation that would support the right to unionize by prohibiting states from banning union security agreements through “right-to-work” laws.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Import ban of cattle, pigs, sheep and deer from Hungary and Slovakia to protect farmers after foot and mouth case

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    News story

Import ban of cattle, pigs, sheep and deer from Hungary and Slovakia to protect farmers after foot and mouth case

Import ban introduced to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease.

The government has stepped up measures to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD), following a confirmed case in Hungary.

The Government has acted immediately to prevent the commercial import from Hungary and Slovakia of cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and other non- domestic ruminants and porcines such as deer and their untreated products, such as fresh meat and dairy. This will protect farmers and their livestock.

The case has been found on a cattle farm in the North West of Hungary, near the border with Slovakia. Observed clinical signs were reported to national authorities who have now formally confirmed infection with FMD following testing.

Action is already underway with local authorities and traders to address possible risks from goods on the way to GB. Such goods must be pre-notified and wider border systems in place will prevent consignments entering GB. This is in addition to restrictions already in place for equivalent exports from Germany, following an outbreak in a water buffalo herd in Brandenburg on 10 January 2025.

In addition, as of 8 March, travellers will no longer be able to bring meat, meat products, milk and dairy products, certain composite products and animal by products of pigs and ruminants from Hungary and Slovakia to Great Britain.

The UK Chief Veterinary Officer is urging livestock keepers to remain vigilant to the clinical signs of FMD following the recent outbreaks in Hungary and Germany. There are no cases in the UK currently.

FMD poses no risk to human or food safety, but is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle, sheep, pigs and other cloven-hoofed animals such as deer, llamas and alpacas. Rodents can also be affected. Livestock keepers should therefore be absolutely rigorous about their biosecurity.

FMD causes significant economic losses due to production losses in the affected animals as well as loss of access to foreign markets for animals, meat and milk for affected countries.

UK Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Christine Middlemiss said:

We remain in contact with our Hungarian counterparts to understand the latest situation following their confirmation of a single case of foot and mouth disease, measures are now being taken to contain and eradicate the outbreak.

I would urge livestock keepers to exercise the upmost vigilance for signs of disease, follow scrupulous biosecurity and report any suspicion of disease immediately to the Animal and Plant Health Agency.

    Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner said:

The government will do whatever it takes to protect our nation’s farmers from the risk posed by foot and mouth disease.

That is why restrictions have immediately been brought in on animal products from Hungary and Slovakia to prevent an outbreak. We will not hesitate to add additional countries to the list if the disease spreads. We will continue to keep the situation under review working closely with the Hungarian and Slovakian authorities.

This comes as the government announced a £200 million investment in the UK’s main research and laboratory testing facilities at Weybridge to bolster protection against animal disease.

    What you can do

If you’re an animal keeper, read about how to spot foot and mouth disease and report it.

If you’re an importer or exporter, read about the import restrictions for foot and mouth disease.

Clinical signs to be aware of vary depending on the animals, but in cattle the main signs are sores and blisters on the feet, mouth and tongue with potentially a fever, lameness and a reluctance to feed. In sheep and pigs, signs tend to manifest with lameness with potential for blistering.

Maintaining good biosecurity is essential to protecting the health and welfare of herds and critical to preventing the spread of diseases such as FMD and preventing an outbreak spreading.

Foot and mouth disease is a notifiable disease and must be reported. If you suspect foot and mouth disease in your animals, you must report it immediately by calling:

    • 03000 200 301 in England

    • 0300 303 8268 in Wales

    • your local  Field Services Office in Scotland

Joint Communiqué: United Nations-African Union Joint Task Force on Peace and Security Holds its Twenty Fourth Consultative Meeting

Addis Ababa, 07 March 2025 — The United Nations-African Union Joint Task Force on Peace and Security held its Twenty Fourth consultative meeting on 17 February 2025, in Addis Ababa.

The meeting reviewed the status of the partnership between the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) with an update on the implementation of the Joint UN-AU Framework for Enhanced Partnership in Peace and Security. In this context, the meeting discussed peace and security developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Libya, Somalia, South Sudan and The Sudan, as well as discussions on the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719 adopted on 21 December 2023, and a follow-up on discussions on the security transition and the new African Union mission in Somalia.

The AU Commission and the UN Secretariat were represented respectively by Commissioner Bankole Adeoye (Political Affairs, Peace and Security); and the Under-Secretaries-General Rosemary DiCarlo (Political and Peacebuilding Affairs), Jean-Pierre Lacroix (Peace Operations), Atul Khare (Operational Support), and Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union. The meeting was also attended by other senior officials from the two Organizations. Ms. Minata Cessouma Samate, outgoing Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development (HHS), addressed the opening segment of the meeting to acknowledge and expressed appreciation for the excellent collaboration with the United Nations during her tenure in office as Commissioner for Political Affairs (2017-2021), before its merger into the current Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department, and in her current capacity as Commissioner for HHS.

The Joint Task Force took note of the considerable progress achieved in the UN-AU partnership including with regional economic communities and mechanisms in Africa, together with international partners. These include sustained collaboration on support to AU peace support operations, early warning, prevention initiatives and coordinated support to national authorities for the conduct of timely, peaceful, and inclusive elections, as well as for the promotion and protection of human rights.

The meeting welcomed efforts to deepen collaboration on operational support matters, including through joint learning and the exchange of knowledge and expertise. The meeting acknowledged the positive impact these efforts have had on mandate implementation across various operational contexts. Both Organizations emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration in support of mediation and to continue to prioritize their joint initiatives on the women, peace and security, youth for peace and security,  and the emerging climate, peace and security nexus agendas.

On Libya, the Joint Task Force welcomed the appointment of Ms. Hannah Tetteh as Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya. Participants also welcomed the establishment of a Libyan Advisory Committee to provide recommendations for resolving outstanding issues to enable the holding of national elections. The meeting noted the signing of the intra-Libya Reconciliation Charter as an important step in the process and underscored the imperative of UN-AU cooperation in advancing the Libyan political transition and national reconciliation.

Regarding the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Joint Task Force expressed deep concern over the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the eastern part of the country, which has brought the region to the brink of war, affecting the lives of thousands of civilians, mostly women and children, and worsening an already dire humanitarian situation. The meeting reminded all parties of the responsibility to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law. The meeting recalled the initiatives aimed at resolving the crisis, including, lately, the Ministerial AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) session held on 28 January, the East Africa Community (EAC) Extraordinary Summit held on 29 January, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Summit held on 31 January, the Joint EAC-SADC Summit held on 8 February and the AU PSC session at the level of Heads of State and Government which convened on 14 February. The meeting deplored the fact that despite the urgent call for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities following the 8 February joint summit of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), hostilities continue as the Mouvement du 23 mars (M23), supported by the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF), pushes further into South Kivu and continues to assert military control over parts of North Kivu. The meeting called the M23 and RDF to respect the ceasefire agreement, immediately cease all hostile actions, and withdraw from occupied areas. The Joint Task Force further called on the RDF to cease support to the M23 and withdraw from DRC territory. It called for the immediate implementation of the joint EAC-SADC Summit decisions related to the opening of Goma airport and supply routes too humanitarian aid. The Task Force expressed its condolences for the UN blue helmets and the forces of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) killed in the line of duty, underscoring that attacks on peacekeepers may constitute a war crime. It called on the M23 and RDF to lift all restrictions on the freedom of movement of United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and refrain any action that may impede the implementation of its mandated responsibilities. The Task Force commended H.E. President João Lourenço for progress achieved under the Luanda process and called for an immediate resumption of talks between the parties to the conflict. The Task Force reaffirmed its support to the Luanda and Nairobi processes and underscored that the implementation of the provisions of the 2013 Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the DRC and the region remains a critical pathway to durable peace and stability.

On Somalia, the Joint Task Force highlighted the strong partnership between the AU and the UN in Somalia and the need for continued close cooperation to ensure support for Somalia in advancing state building priorities and in the security transition. The meeting noted that the potential hybrid application of resolution 2719 to the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia is essential to ensure the Mission’s predictable and sustainable financing and to protect and build on the security gains achieved in Somalia.

The meeting welcomed progress achieved in the elaboration of the Joint AU-UN Roadmap for the Operationalization of resolution 2719 which was endorsed during the 8th UN-AU Annual Conference held on 21 October 2024. The meeting noted that while the roadmap is not a prerequisite for implementing resolution 2719, it serves as a framework for continuously strengthening the performance and impact of both the AU and the UN.

On Sudan, the Joint Task Force expressed grave concern about the escalation of violence in the Sudan, including the increasing intercommunal tensions and ethnicization of the fighting in Darfur. The Joint Task Force reiterated its call on the warring parties to immediately cease fighting and take steps towards the lasting peace that the people of Sudan demand. The Joint Task Force urged continued efforts to ensure coordination in diplomatic initiatives to put an end to the conflict and support the Sudanese in embarking on an inclusive political process that will return Sudan to a democratic transition. The Joint Task Force reaffirmed the indispensable UN-AU partnership on Sudan which provides an anchor for a broad multilateral coalition to end the conflict. It was noted that there is need to work together to fulfil the provision of the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation and Healing (CTRH) Act (2024) which requires the Chairperson of the AU Commission and the United Nations Secretary General to nominate three commissioners to be appointed to the CTRH.

On South Sudan, there was consensus on the need for ongoing support and closer collaboration on the operationalisation of key institutions, including the national unified forces, the constitutional review process, as well as support to electoral management bodies. This is with the aim to ensuring forward momentum with regards to the Revitalized Agreement, while allowing for efforts to expand the peace process through the Tumaini Peace Initiative.

The next statutory meeting of the Joint Task Force will be hosted by the United Nations in New York at a date to be agreed by both Organizations.

Members Of the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism Take Swift Action to Protect Jewish Students in Response to Inaction By Columbia University

WASHINGTON — Today, the Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of Education (ED), and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced the immediate cancellation of approximately $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University due to the school’s continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students. These cancellations represent the first round of action and additional cancellations are expected to follow. The Task Force is continuing to review and coordinate across federal agencies to identify additional cancellations that could be made swiftly. DOJ, HHS, ED, and GSA are taking this action as members of the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. Columbia University currently holds more than $5 billion in federal grant commitments.

On March 3rd, the Task Force notified the Acting President of Columbia University that it would conduct a comprehensive review of the university’s federal contracts and grants  in light of ongoing investigations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Chaos and anti-Semitic harassment have continued on and near campus in the days since. Columbia has not responded to the Task Force.

“After the horrors of October 7th, Jewish students were shamefully targeted on American college campuses—including at Columbia University,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “Any university which fails to account for the discrimination of its students will not be tolerated. Comply with federal anti-discrimination laws and take action to protect students or expect consequences.”

“Since October 7, Jewish students have faced relentless violence, intimidation, and anti-Semitic harassment on their campuses – only to be ignored by those who are supposed to protect them,” said Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “Universities must comply with all federal antidiscrimination laws if they are going to receive federal funding. For too long, Columbia has abandoned that obligation to Jewish students studying on its campus. Today, we demonstrate to Columbia and other universities that we will not tolerate their appalling inaction any longer.”

President Trump has been clear that any college or university that allows illegal protests and repeatedly fails to protect students from anti-Semitic harassment on campus will be subject to the loss of federal funding.

“Freezing the funds is one of the tools we are using to respond to this spike in anti-Semitism. This is only the beginning,” said Leo Terrell, Senior Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights and head of the DOJ Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. “Cancelling these taxpayer funds is our strongest signal yet that the Federal Government is not going to be party to an educational institution like Columbia that does not protect Jewish students and staff.”

The decisive action by the DOJ, HHS, ED, and GSA to cancel Columbia’s grants and contracts serves as a notice to every school and university that receives federal dollars that this Administration will use all the tools at its disposal to protect Jewish students and end anti-Semitism on college campuses.

“Anti-Semitism is clearly inconsistent with the fundamental values that should inform liberal education,” said Sean Keveney, HHS Acting General Counsel and Task Force member. “Columbia University’s complacency is unacceptable.”

GSA will assist HHS and ED in issuing stop-work orders on grants and contracts that Columbia holds with those agencies. These stop-work orders will immediately freeze the university’s access to these funds. Additionally, GSA will be assisting all agencies in issuing stop work orders and terminations for contracts held by Columbia University.

“Doing business with the Federal Government is a privilege,” said Josh Gruenbaum, FAS Commissioner and Task Force member. “Columbia University, through their continued and shameful inaction to stop radical protestors from taking over buildings on campus and lack of response to the safety issues for Jewish students, and for that matter – all students – are not upholding the ideals of this Administration or the American people. Columbia cannot expect to retain the privilege of receiving federal taxpayer dollars if they will not fulfill their civil rights responsibilities to protect Jewish students from harassment and anti-Semitism.”

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is providing an at-a-glance summary of news from around the agency:

On Wednesday, the FDA approved Encelto (revakinagene taroretcel-lwey), an allogeneic encapsulated cell-based gene therapy for the treatment of adults with idiopathic macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel). MacTel is a rare progressive disease of the macula (portion of the eye that process sharp central vision), leading to degeneration of the photoreceptors which are specialized light-detecting cells in the back of the eye.Encelto is administered into the patient’s eye during a single surgical procedure performed by a qualified ophthalmologist. Encelto works by expressing recombinant human ciliary neurotrophic factor, which is a factor that may promote the survival and maintenance of the macular photoreceptors.
On Wednesday, the FDA expanded the indication for neffy (epinephrine nasal spray) to include children four years of age and older who weigh 15 to less than 30 kg. Neffy was approved in 2024 for the emergency treatment of type 1 allergic reactions, including those that are life-threatening (anaphylaxis), in adults and pediatric patients who weigh at least 30 kg (66 pounds). Neffy is the first FDA-approved nasal spray to treat anaphylaxis and the first epinephrine product for the treatment of anaphylaxis that is not administered by injection. Treatment for children four years of age and older who weigh 15 to less than 30 kg consists of a 1 mg dose of epinephrine per spray in a single-dose nasal spray. The most common adverse effects for this pediatric population include nasal discomfort, upper respiratory tract congestion, dry throat, nasal dryness and tingling. • MIL-OSI USA: Cortez Masto Fights to Protect Workers’ Right to Organize

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Nevada Cortez Masto
As the Trump Administration Threatens to Weaken the NLRB, PRO Act Would Strengthen Labor Rights and Streamline NLRB Procedures
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) joined a bipartisan group of U.S. Senate and House Members in introducing the Richard L. Trumka Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act of 2025, a comprehensive proposal to protect workers’ right to come together and bargain for higher wages, better benefits, and safer workplaces. The reintroduction of the PRO Act follows illegal efforts by the Trump Administration to fire members of the National Labor Relations Board.
“We cannot allow the deck to be stacked against workers in Nevada and across the United States,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “As a daughter, cousin, and niece of union members, I know how important the right to organize has been in helping Nevadans get better wages and safer working conditions. It’s past time that Congress passes this bill to protect our unions.”
    Specifically, the PRO Act would:
Establish penalties on predatory corporations that violate workers’ rights.
Strengthen workers’ right to strike for basic workplace improvements, including higher wages and better working conditions.
Streamline the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) procedures to secure worker freedoms and effectively prevent violations.
Protect the integrity of union elections against coercive captive audience meetings and other interference meant to impede union formation.
Enhance workers’ access to remedies when faced with illegal action by an employer.
The proud daughter of a Teamster, Senator Cortez Masto grew up in organized labor and has always fought for Nevada’s working families. Last Congress, the Senator introduced the Asunción Valdivia Heat Stress Injury, Illness, and Fatality Prevention Act to ensure the safety and health of workers who are exposed to dangerous heat conditions in the workplace. She has also been a strong supporter of increased funding for the National Labor Relations Board to help fight for workers’ rights to collectively bargain.

  • MIL-OSI Canada: Improving access to life-saving cancer treatment

In Alberta, about 2,500 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, with one in six men in the province being diagnosed during their lifetime.

Albertans living with cancer need the most effective treatments available, which is why Alberta’s government is committed to funding innovative new therapies to improve both cancer care and prevention. To support these efforts, Alberta’s government has made Pluvicto, a new radiopharmaceutical treatment for advanced prostate cancer, available to Albertans.

“We know that Albertans living with advanced prostate cancer and their health providers have been awaiting access to this new treatment. Bringing Pluvicto to our province has been a priority for the government, and I’m pleased we can now offer this leading therapy to Albertans.”

    Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health

As soon as a national pricing agreement was reached in December 2024, Alberta worked quickly to add Pluvicto to the Schedule of Outpatient Cancer Drugs, becoming the third province to do so, alongside Ontario and Nova Scotia. Alberta Health Services is now finalizing a contract with the manufacturer to ensure this treatment is accessible to patients. The Outpatient Cancer Drug Benefit Program provides access to cancer medications included on the Schedule of Outpatient Cancer Drugs to patients at no cost.

Prior to offering this treatment, the province arranged for the special handling, administration and medical imaging required, as well as to provide training to health providers. It is anticipated that the administration of this intravenous radioligand therapy to Albertans will begin later this month.

“When we partnered with Alberta Health to bring PSMA-PET imaging technology to Alberta in 2021, we knew it would be transformative. We are thrilled it’s led to this emerging new treatment being offered – a breakthrough moment and incredible news for men with advanced prostate cancer.”

Wendy Beauchesne, CEO, Alberta Cancer Foundation

The drug will be administered at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary to start and will become available at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre later this year.

“Cancer Care Alberta is very pleased that Pluvicto is now publicly funded in Alberta, allowing us to bring this new innovation in treatment to Albertans living with advanced prostate cancer.”

Brenda Hubley, chief program officer, Cancer Care Alberta

Pluvicto is an intravenous treatment given in a cancer centre. It contains a radioligand – a substance that combines a targeting molecule with a small amount of radiation. This radioligand binds to a specific receptor expression on prostate cancer cells, delivering targeted radiation to kill them. Before receiving treatment, patients undergo a PET-CT scan to confirm they have the receptor expression, ensuring the treatment will be effective. It’s estimated that about 200 advanced prostate cancer patients in Alberta have the specific receptor needed to benefit from this treatment each year.

In March 2024, Alberta’s government provided $5 million for the provision of prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scans to eligible Albertans to help accurately diagnose advanced prostate cancer and assist with administering the Pluvicto treatment.

“The Government of Alberta’s decision to publicly fund Pluvicto offers renewed hope for Albertans facing advanced prostate cancer with limited options. This important step demonstrates a shared commitment from government, healthcare providers and industry to address the unmet needs of these patients. We applaud Alberta’s leadership in advancing cancer care and remain committed to ensuring Canadians in all provinces have access to this innovative treatment.”

    Mark Vineis, CEO, Novartis Canada

Poshan Abhiyan’s Holistic Approach to Nutrition and Wellness

Posted On: 07 MAR 2025 7:48PM by PIB Delhi

    Introduction

Poshan Abhiyaan was launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister on 8th March, 2018 in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. The focus of Abhiyaan is to lay emphasis on nutritional status of adolescent girls, pregnant women, lactating mothers and children from 0-6 years age. The programme, through use of technology, convergence and community involvement with a targeted approach strives to reduce the level of stunting, under-nutrition, anaemia and low birth weight in children, as also focus on adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers, thus holistically addressing malnutrition.

    Objectives

    • Prevent and reduce stunting in children (0- 6 years)
    • Prevent and reduce under-nutrition (underweight prevalence) in children (0-6 years)
    • Reduce the prevalence of anaemia among young Children(6-59 months)
    • Reduce the prevalence of anaemia among Women and Adolescent Girls in the age group of 15-49 years
    • Reduce Low Birth Weight (LBW)

    Strategic Pillars of Poshan Abhiyaan

The Abhiyaan operates through four strategic pillars:

     1. Access to Quality Services: Providing essential health services through schemes like Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) , National Health Mission (NHM), and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), especially during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.

    2. Cross-Sectoral Convergence: Coordinating efforts across multiple ministries, including water and sanitation under the Swachh Bharat Mission and drinking water access through the National Drinking Water Mission.

    3. Leveraging Technology: Tools like the Poshan Tracker application enable real-time data collection and intervention.

    4. Jan Andolan: Community engagement is key to driving mass awareness and encouraging behavioral change around nutrition.

    POSHAN Abhiyaan Programme Priorities

To accelerate improvements in nutrition, POSHAN Abhiyaan prioritises on:

    1. The first 1000 days – A critical window of opportunity:  The initial 1,000 days, from conception to a child’s second birthday, play a crucial role in ensuring optimal nutrition and healthcare for both mother and baby, laying the foundation for long-term health and development.

Ensuring Access to Essential Services: The Government of India is dedicated to expanding and enhancing the reach of critical, evidence-based interventions to improve nutrition and overall well-being. This is achieved through the integration of multiple schemes and programs focused on health, nutrition, and holistic development.

    1. Jan Andolan for behaviour change: Recognizing that sustainable improvements in nutrition require collective action, the Prime Minister has called upon multiple stakeholders to drive a mass movement (Jan Andolan) for a malnutrition-free India.
    1. Multi-sectoral convergence: To facilitate effective multi-sectoral coordination, a National Council on India’s Nutrition Challenges under the Chairpersonship of Vice Chairman NITI Aayog has been established. The Council provides policy directions and reviews convergence between Ministries and programmes for nutrition on a quarterly basis.
    1.  Service delivery through technology

POSHAN Abhiyaan delivers services through existing schemes like ICDS-CAS. This is a mobile application to strengthen delivery of Anganwadi Services. Anganwadi workers capture the data on their mobiles. This information is available at State and Ministry level on a real-time basis on a web-based dashboard. The information is used to monitor interventions and take fact-based decisions.

Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0

The Government of India approved “Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0” (also referred to as Mission Poshan 2.0) which is a strategic shift in mission mode to develop practices that nurture health, wellness, and immunity from malnutrition. With 14,00,117 Anganwadi Centers (AWCs) operating across 36 States/UTs and 781 districts, the mission aims to enhance the health, wellness, and immunity of children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Supported by 13,30,966 Anganwadi Workers, it ensures nutritional benefits reach 10,08,89,775 eligible beneficiaries. Infrastructure improvements include 6,77,843 AWCs with their own buildings, 10,07,635 with functional toilets, and 12,43,472 with access to drinking water.

    Conclusion

Poshan Abhiyaan represents a landmark initiative in India’s fight against malnutrition. By integrating technology, cross-sectoral collaboration, and community-driven efforts, the program has made significant strides in improving maternal and child nutrition. The success of this mission depends on sustained efforts in service delivery, behavioural change, and policy innovation. With continued government support and active community participation, Poshan Abhiyaan is poised to create a healthier and more nourished future for India’s women and children.

Hong Kong Customs detects illicit cigarette smuggling cases involving air passengers and raids illicit cigarette storage centre (with photos)
    ******************************************************************************************

Hong Kong Customs over the past two weeks enhanced enforcement actions at Hong Kong International Airport and detected illicit cigarette smuggling cases involving air passengers. Also, Customs raided a suspected illicit cigarette storage centre in Yuen Long yesterday (March 6), seizing a total of about 6.7 million suspected illicit cigarettes and about 570 000 suspected alternative smoking products, with a total estimated total market value of about $33 million. The duty potential of the illicit cigarettes was about $22 million.           In the small hours today (March 7), Customs officers intercepted a male outside a hotel in Tin Shui Wai and seized a total of about 90 000 sticks of suspected illicit cigarettes and about 110 000 suspected alternative smoking products in his nylon bag and the hotel room he was staying in. The man was subsequently arrested. After investigations, Customs believes that illicit cigarette syndicate made use of air passengers to smuggle illicit cigarettes and alternative smoking products, which were then stored in hotel rooms for further distribution.            The arrested man, aged 36 and claiming to be unemployed, was charged. He will appear at the Tuen Mun Magistrates’ Courts tomorrow (March 8). The suspected alternative smoking products seized will be handed over to the Department of Health for follow-up action.           At the same time, Customs detected 20 illicit cigarette smuggling cases with 13 men and eight women arrested at the airport over the past two weeks. A total of about 600 000 suspected illicit cigarettes and about 460 000 suspected alternative smoking products, with an estimated total market value of about $4 million and a duty potential of about $2 million, were seized.           It is believed that the syndicate that smuggle illicit cigarettes and alternative smoking products through passengers was smashed.           Moreover, after an in-depth investigation, Customs carried out a strike-and-search operation at a logistics warehouse in Yuen Long yesterday. Customs officers intercepted a man who was moving goods to a vehicle and seized about 6 million suspected illicit cigarettes in the vehicle and the warehouse. The 44-year-old man, who claimed to be a driver, was arrested. He has been released on bail pending further investigation.           Customs will continue its risk assessment and intelligence analysis for interception at source as well as through its multipronged enforcement strategy targeting storage, distribution and peddling to spare no effort in combating illicit cigarette activities.           Customs stresses that it is an offence to buy or sell illicit cigarettes. Under the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance, anyone involved in dealing with, possession of, selling or buying illicit cigarettes commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $1 million and imprisonment for two years.           Members of the public may report any suspected illicit cigarette activities to Customs’ 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).
