  • MIL-OSI Africa: Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) Secures €250M for Lobito Corridor as Rail Projects Drive African Mining Boom

    Source: APO – Report:

    .

Africa’s railway sector is undergoing a renaissance, with strategic transport corridors rapidly expanding to unlock the continent’s mineral wealth and strengthen global trade ties. In June, the Africa Finance Corporation secured a €250 million (http://apo-opa.co/3Tje8ph), 10-year loan from Italian development finance institution Cassa Depositi e Prestiti to accelerate the development of the Lobito Corridor – an essential mineral transport network linking Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to global markets. The loan will finance the procurement of goods and services from Italian companies for both the corridor and associated renewable energy projects.

The Lobito Corridor is among several strategic projects that will feature prominently at African Mining Week (AMW), taking place October 1–3, 2025, in Cape Town. AMW will showcase high-impact investment opportunities across Africa’s mining and infrastructure value chains, with a focus on how rail logistics are transforming landlocked mineral-rich regions into competitive, export-oriented hubs.

    Simandou Rail Hits Construction Milestone

In West Africa, Guinea-Conakry marked a key milestone in June with the completion of a 903-meter tunnel on the 650-km Simandou Railway (http://apo-opa.co/45SkT8V). Once operational by early 2026, the line will transport up to 120 million tons of high-grade iron ore annually from the Simandou deposit — home to an estimated 2 billion tons of reserves. U.S. company Wabtec (http://apo-opa.co/4l9hRlk) was awarded a $248 million contract in February to supply locomotives for the project. At AMW 2025, a high-level panel, “From Mines to Markets: Strengthening Trade and Connectivity for Africa’s Mineral Future (http://apo-opa.co/44sE5Yv),” will explore how megaprojects like Simandou are strengthening Africa’s mineral value chain.

Mauritania Advances Iron Ore Rail Expansion

Mauritania has also made strides in rail development, securing a €113 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) (http://apo-opa.co/45SWH6n) in June to co-finance the expansion of a key iron ore railway between Zouérat and Nouadhibou. The project – backed by a total €461 million investment involving national mining company SNIM, EIB and private investors – will optimize exports of Mauritania’s iron ore to international markets. AMW 2025 will provide a platform for global investors to engage with opportunities emerging in Mauritania and similar markets.

    Cameroon Strengthens Bauxite Logistics

In Central Africa, Australia’s Canyon Resources acquired a 9.1% stake in Cameroon’s national rail operator, Camrail (http://apo-opa.co/4kn52D4), to bolster logistics for the Minim Martap Bauxite Mine (http://apo-opa.co/3TnW8Kn). The acquisition – from TotalEnergies and Société d’Exploitation des Bois du Cameroun – aims to enhance rail access from the mine to port infrastructure, facilitating the export of up to 6.4 million tons of bauxite annually. AMW will feature investment-ready opportunities tied to bauxite and other critical minerals (http://apo-opa.co/45SkV0x) driving the energy transition.

China Deepens Rail Footprint in Africa

In East Africa, the China Railway Engineering Group signed a $2.15 billion agreement in February with Tanzania and Burundi (http://apo-opa.co/3ZYN8Pz) to build a 282-km cross-border railway. The line is expected to support the export of up to 3 million tons of minerals annually, improving regional and global market access. In Nigeria, the China Development Bank (http://apo-opa.co/3TZOrdr) provided a $254.76 million grant in January to finance the Kano-Kaduna rail line – a vital link between the Lagos-Ibadan and Kano-Maradi corridors. This project will enhance mineral and energy transportation across West Africa. At AMW 2025, the China-Africa Cooperation on Minerals Roundtable (http://apo-opa.co/45SkWl7) will convene public and private sector leaders to strengthen bilateral ties, while the Invest in Nigeria Infrastructure session (http://apo-opa.co/4la5V2L) will further spotlight opportunities like the Kano-Kaduna rail project as cornerstones of Nigeria’s mining and logistics growth.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: Red Cross and Red Crescent network supports the African Union and its Member States’ commitment to eliminate cholera by 2030

    Source: APO – Report:

    .

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), in collaboration with its African National Society members, fully supports the African Union (AU) and its member states in their efforts to eliminate cholera across the continent.

Forged during a high-level meeting of AU member states in June, this new commitment centers on strengthening community-based health services and epidemic preparedness, working closely with local communities to achieve lasting solutions.

The IFRC commends the leadership and united commitment demonstrated by the Heads of State, Government, and Delegations, who gathered in June under the AU’s framework to advance a strong and coordinated response to the ongoing multi-country cholera outbreaks, which in 2025 are affecting approximately 20 Member States.

The IFRC and its African National Society members, fully endorse the priorities outlined in the Call-to-Action to End Cholera and Achieve Elimination by 2030 with particular emphasis on:

    • strengthening national and regional preparedness,

    • scaling up investments in sustainable water, sanitation and health (WASH) infrastructure,

    • placing communities and civil society at the heart of cholera elimination agenda.

    A deep community presence

As auxiliary partners to public authorities in the humanitarian field, Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies in Africa bring unique value through their deep community presence, trusted local networks, and mandate to complement government action.

With operations in all AU Member States, the IFRC and its African National Society members are uniquely positioned to deliver localised, people-centred responses that translate policy commitments into life-saving action.

Recognising the cross-cutting impacts of cholera on already strained health systems—the Red Cross Red Crescent Network has scaled up its efforts to prevent, detect, and respond to outbreaks through high-impact, community-driven interventions such as:

    • Community-based Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT): Delivered at the household level via Oral Rehydration Points (ORPs), ensuring timely access to lifesaving care.
    • Emergency water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions: Implemented in affected households and surrounding areas to stop transmission.
    • Support to Oral Cholera Vaccination (OCV) campaigns: Including community mobilization, social mobilization, and logistics assistance.
    • Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE): Embedded across all pillars of response to promote behaviour change, drive surveillance, and enable early action.
    • Cross-border collaboration facilitated to prevent, control and recover from cholera outbreaks at community level in collaboration with local authorities.

In addition, the IFRC hosts the Country Support Platform (CSP), the operational arm of the Global Task Force on Cholera Control, which supports AU Member States in developing and implementing National Cholera Plans, accessing technical expertise, and mobilizing domestic and external resources.

Aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Continental Framework for Cholera Elimination, IFRC is also investing in multi-hazard anticipatory action to prepare authorities, communities and other concerned stakeholders ahead of Cholera outbreaks.

This is done in part through the development of Early Action Protocols, systems that trigger preparatory actions before a crisis hits. Such protocols empower African National Societies to act early by pre-positioning supplies, training volunteers, and accessing forecast-based financing enabling faster, more cost-effective responses before outbreaks escalate.

With more than 3.8 million trained volunteers across Africa and a presence in every community, the Red Cross Red Crescent Network is well-positioned to bring life-saving interventions to those most at risk before, during and after outbreaks.

    Together, we can eliminate Cholera

Cholera is preventable, and together, we can eliminate it. Our volunteers are trusted members of the communities they serve. Through early action, health education, and emergency interventions, we are proud to contribute to this continental ambition to eliminate cholera and protect lives.

Through these efforts, the IFRC and African National Societies reaffirm their unwavering commitment to support AU Member States in achieving national and continental targets for cholera control and elimination.

The IFRC is dedicated to working hand-in-hand with the African Union Commission, Africa CDC, Member States, and other partners to build resilient health systems, empower communities, and end cholera as a threat to public health and development across the continent.

Together, we can defeat cholera and ensure that no one is left behind.

  • Wildfire on Greek island of Crete scorches forest, forces evacuation of over 1,000

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Hundreds of firefighters battled a blaze Thursday on Crete island, which burnt swathes of forest and olive groves and forced the evacuation of over 1,000 people, officials said, underscoring the region’s vulnerability to destructive wildfires.

At least 230 firefighters, along with 46 engines and helicopters, were deployed to contain the conflagration, which broke out a day earlier near Ierapetra townon the southeastern coast of Greece’s largest island.

Stoked by gale-force winds, the blaze reached houses and hotels, fire brigade and local officials said, with local media reporting damage to some homes but no injuries.

Scores of residents and tourists were evacuated and moved to a temporary shelter at an indoor stadium in Ierapetra. Some left Crete by boats, authorities said.

“Three settlements were evacuated and more than 1,000 left their homes. Some were taken to health centres with respiratory problems,” Crete’s deputy civil protection governor, George Tsapakos, told public broadcaster ERT.

ERT footage showed a water bomber flying over an area thick with grey smoke.

Alongside reinforcements from Athens on Thursday, firefighters fought to tame several resurgent blazes whipped up by winds, fire brigade spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis said.

“There are wind gusts in the area, some measuring 9 on the Beaufort scale, which are triggering rekindling and hindering firefighting efforts,” Vathrakogiannis said.

July tended to be the most difficult month of the fire season due to high temperatures and strong winds, he said.

Greece and other countries in the Mediterranean are in an area scientists have called “a wildfire hotspot” – with blazes common during hot and dry summers. These have become more destructive in recent years, authorities say, due to a fast-changing climate.

Thousands havefled wildfires in Turkey and at least eight people have died as a result of a heatwavein Europe.

  • MIL-OSI China: China’s grassroots ‘World Cup’ ignites football frenzy

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Players of Yangzhou greet supporters after winning the third round match against Changzhou at the 2025 Jiangsu Football City League (JSCL) in Changzhou, May 31, 2025. (Xinhua)

Those eager to catch a glimpse of next year’s FIFA World Cup magic a little early may want to head to eastern China’s Jiangsu Province, where an amateur football league is offering an unlikely but extraordinary alternative.

With a cheeky nod to both the English Premier League and the Chinese Super League, the Su Super League, or the Jiangsu Football City League, features a seven-month, 85-match grassroots showdown between 13 cities, packed with local pride, derby drama and an atmosphere that is nothing short of electric.

The league has taken China by storm, even eclipsing the domestic buzz surrounding the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. On June 29, 43,617 fans packed into the stands to watch Suzhou take on Yangzhou, a crowd even larger than the average attendance of Italy’s Serie A last year.

And that might just be the warm-up. The upcoming July 5 clash between Suzhou and Nanjing, moved to a stadium with over 60,000 seats, is expected to set a new attendance record. Ticket demand has been so wild that hundreds of thousands have scrambled online just for a shot at entry.

Since its May 10 kick-off, the league had racked up a jaw-dropping 11 billion views on Chinese short video platforms by June 21, according to Jiangsu’s statistical authorities. That’s not a typo – billion with a “B.”

Despite China’s struggles on the international football stage, the passion for the sport runs deep at home. And the Su Super League is a living proof. Unlike its professional counterparts, the league’s players come from everyday backgrounds like students, office workers and repairmen.

But they deliver no fewer spectacles on the pitch. In that June 29 match, Suzhou scored just one minute and 18 seconds into the game, setting a league record for the fastest goal. The scorer was a 17-year-old high schooler who netted twice more in the second half, leading his team to victory.

Even in defeat, the league finds its heroes. Changzhou, a team yet to register a win in five games, has become a fan favorite for their fight, grit and refusal to give in. Fans flood social media with affectionate memes, and the team’s underdog charm has sparked a local tourism and spending boom.

“We never used to watch football,” said Xu Huaiyu, a housewife from Changzhou. “Now our whole family gathers for every match and cheers for our home team!”

On weekends, the league streams across more than 20 platforms. According to Jiangsu TV, the past weekend’s locally televised broadcasts alone pulled in a combined audience of 83.7 million viewers.

The fever is just as real offline. Bars, plazas and even cinemas across Jiangsu have seen surging crowds for public viewings – scenes typically reserved for the World Cup.

In Nantong, 34 viewing spots in parks and commercial districts have become makeshift stadiums, filled with chants and applause. In Wuxi, outdoor screens and football-themed night markets serve up beer, barbecue and 90 minutes of grassroots glory under the stars.

“The phenomenon reflects people’s rising enthusiasm for diverse, mass-participation sports events,” said Li Chao, a spokesperson of China’s National Development and Reform Commission. “It also reveals the immense potential for growth in China’s sports, cultural and tourism industries.”

Suzhou has gone all in. More than 100 local restaurants, malls and scenic spots are offering discounts to traveling fans. Match ticket holders and visitors from opposing cities can enjoy free entry to over 40 attractions across the city.

In Nantong, the economic impact is already measurable. On a recent home game Sunday, the city welcomed over 730,000 visitors and generated 420 million yuan (around 58 million U.S. dollars) in tourism revenue, a 44.5 percent and 52.3 percent jump year-over-year, respectively.

A Jiangsu statistical department’s recent survey of over 3,000 local residents found that nearly 59 percent plan to increase household spending on sports this year – be it gear, training or participation – thanks to the league’s influence.

“The Su Super League has broken through the walls of traditional competitive sports,” said Ding Xiang, associate professor at Nanjing University. “It’s creating a culture where everyone can talk football, watch football and be part of the experience,” he said. “It’s much like the World Cup at street level, with a ripple effect on diverse consumer behavior.”

Multiple Jiangsu cities have already moved to capitalize, listing the league as a strategic economic priority for the second half of 2025. At a recent provincial briefing, Jiangsu Governor Xu Kunlin urged officials to “fully leverage the league to drive integration of culture, tourism, sports and commerce, and spark a consumption-led economy.”

Beyond economic gains, the league is casting new light on youth development. Powerhouse teams like Nantong, who have netted 12 goals in four matches, are largely made up of players from local youth academies. The city has already made football part of high school entrance assessments and boasts over 240 national-level school football programs.

Even Changzhou, winless but undaunted, is stepping up. The city is preparing a new three-year action plan to expand its youth training system and bring football further into schools.

In March, German football giants Borussia Dortmund opened a youth training base in Changzhou. Bundesliga-level coaches now train local PE teachers and run regular sessions for students, embedding a global football philosophy into local roots.

“The Su Super League reminds us of football’s raw passion and purity,” said Bai Yufei, professor at Beijing Sport University. “It’s getting longtime fans even more excited, and it’s bringing new ones into the game. That’s how you grow the sport at the grassroots level.”

  • MIL-OSI Russia: US Oil Production at Current Prices Peaks – Sechin

Source: Rosneft – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

US oil production at current prices has probably reached its peak, Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin said at the Energy Panel of the XXVIII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Delivering a keynote speech, the CEO called the energy policy initially announced by the new US administration promising. However, most of these goals have not yet been achieved: tariff wars have led to a drop in oil prices, while taxes for the oil industry remain at the same level and interest rates have not been reduced. Given this backdrop, the number of active drilling rigs has fallen 9% to 439 over the past two months and oil production growth has stalled. In less than a year, the U.S. Department of Energy has lowered its forecast for U.S. oil production by the end of 2025 by 400 thousand barrels per day.

“At current prices, the USA oil production appears to have peaked,” Sechin said, noting that Diamondback Energy and ConocoPhillips recently voiced this opinion. And Liberty Energy, an oilfield services company founded by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, expects a significant slowdown in drilling activity in the second half of this year, which should lead to a reduction in the U.S. drilling fleet by about 10% more. “Not surprisingly, against this backdrop, many shale players have already started cutting investments,” said Rosneft’s CEO.

He noted that the sharp drop in oil prices this year has already led to a revision of investment plans. According to the IEA’s latest estimate, this year, for the first time in five years, global investments in oil exploration and production will drop by 6%, while in the U.S. the drop will amount to about 10%.  “I think this is just the beginning,” the CEO of Rosneft remarked.

“The new head of the US Treasury Department, Scott Bessent, has repeatedly stated that the success of Trump’s second presidential term requires oil production growth in the US in the amount of three million barrels per day. This is part of a so-called “3-3-3 Plan” which also envisages cutting the US budget deficit down to 3% of GDP and reaching 3% of GDP increase,” Igor Sechin reminded.

The CEO of the Company also asks the question, what difference does it make for the US market where these barrels will come from? “Quite possibly, those may be barrels produced in OPEC+ countries. Since late last year the alliance has consistently reiterated the need to ramp up production due to changes in consumption,” Sechin said.

The CEO also noted that in addition to the interest of states, the interests of shareholders should be taken into account. Low oil prices in the current period do not allow many companies to maintain the same level of dividend payments and share buybacks, said the CEO of Rosneft. According to Rystad Energy experts, which Sechin cited, if the oil majors maintain their payments to shareholders, they will have to almost completely abandon investments or significantly increase their debt as early as this year.

“The fall in prices has already started to affect the major players. BP and Chevron will reduce share buybacks by almost 60% and 30%, respectively , while Aramco has to build up debt to be able to pay dividends,” the CEO said.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Igor Sechin Talks About Renaissance of Nuclear Power Sector

Source: Rosneft – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The importance of nuclear power, which is a natural complement to fossil fuels, is growing, said Igor Sechin, Chief Executive Officer of Rosneft, at the Energy Panel at the XXVIII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

“However, against the backdrop of growing consumption, all types of generation, including nuclear, are experiencing a rebirth. This is clearly illustrated by the price of uranium fuel, which has more than tripled over the past seven years,” Igor Sechin noted.

He recalled that back in the 1930s the idea of thermonuclear fusion was formulated, and many famous scientists, including Nobel laureates Hans Bethe, Peter Kapitsa, Igor Tamm and later Andrei Sakharov, sought to reproduce and control this process. In theory, fusion can generate almost four million times more energy than burning oil or coal, Igor Sechin said. However, in order to sustain a fusion reaction and sustainably generate energy, it is still necessary to improve methods of plasma confinement, ensure its stability, and increase efficiency.

The CEO of Rosneft noted that a few years ago the nuclear power industry was in a deep crisis due to the decline in activity in the industry and such large companies as Westinghouse and Areva had to go through restructuring and ownership changes. However, the situation then began to change. “Over the past five years, global annual investments in nuclear energy have increased by 50%, reaching 70 billion dollars last year. China has become one of the leaders in nuclear power today. Over the past ten years, the installed capacity of nuclear generation in this country has increased fivefold and approached 60 GW. China plans to complete the construction of 32 more reactors in the coming years,” he said.

At the same time, Sechin said it is important that China relies on the latest technological achievements of the leading nuclear powers – Russia, the United States and France – to develop its nuclear industry.

He noted that Russia has many years of experience in building nuclear power plants. The cost of the most modern Russian VVER-1200 reactor is much lower than the American AP-1000. Today such reactors are already operating in Russia and are planned to be commissioned in friendly countries.

At the same time, Sechin noted, the resource base is of particular importance. Today, just seven countries, including the Russian Federation, control more than 90% of the world’s uranium fuel production and about 70% of the world’s uranium reserves.

“Today, Russia is the only country in the world that has expertise in the entire technological chain of the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining to nuclear fuel disposal. In total, 80 nuclear reactors have been built in the world using Russian technologies,” he said

Russia has also commissioned the world’s only floating nuclear power plant of small capacity. Currently, four more nuclear power plants are under construction.

Also, a sodium-cooled nuclear reactor belonging to the category of fast neutron reactors, the BN-800, has been successfully operating in our country for ten years, another latest-generation fast neutron reactor, the BN-1200, is under construction.

“Reactors of this type take into account the most advanced technical solutions, including the enlargement of fuel elements, the use of uranium-plutonium mixed fuel, as well as well as new structural steels with increased radiation resistance, which provide deeper fuel burnup and higher efficiency.  In particular, the efficiency of electricity generation increases by 20-25%, even without taking into account the significantly higher efficiency of fuel use,” said the CEO of Rosneft

Investments in the nuclear sector are expected to continue growing According to the IEA forecast, by 2050 the global installed nuclear generation capacity will grow by nearly 60% to reach 650 GW. “I believe this estimate is understated. Just a few weeks ago, the US President set a goal to quadruple the country’s nuclear generation capacity to 400 GW,” Sechin noted.

The CEO of Rosneft expects further growth of investments in the nuclear sector: new technologies, such as small modular reactors, are now attracting increased attention of investors. While such reactors are more mobile, their implementation also requires investments in the development of power grids. In addition, special attention should be paid to their safety and security against terrorist threats.

“Rolls-Royce recently won a tender for the construction of such reactors in the UK. Experts note that these reactors have a number of features. One of them is described in Ecclesiastes: “What is crooked cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted.” None of these reactors have been put into operation yet,” Sechin explained.

The proposed smaller reactors will require no less effort and cost, including those related to fuel utilization and safety, than existing larger reactors.

“Finally, nuclear energy is, in any case, a dual-use technology. The issue of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons must be given the utmost attention, as it is precisely because of this that the Middle East conflict is currently intensifying. It is crucial to consider whether we want further expansion of the nuclear club,” Igor Sechin concluded.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Microalgae: an innovative tool for bioeconomy

Source: Peoples’Friendship University of Russia –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Products derived from microalgae represent a cutting-edge development in the field of bioeconomy. The potential of this biological resource was discussed at the international research seminar “Foundations for a Green Sustainable Energy”, part of the BRICS Network University’s thematic group on “Energy”. The event was organized by the Institute of Ecology at RUDN University.

The series of scientific seminars is designed to inform graduate students and young researchers from the universities participating in the BRICS Network University about the scientific challenges being solved by partner institutions and to encourage them to participate in international academic mobility

    Sergey Shirinsky,

Associate Professor of the Department of Electromechanics, Electrical and Electronic Apparatus at NRU “MPEI”.

The main speaker of the seminar was Irina Adarchenko, a graduate student from the Institute of Ecology at RUDN University with the presentation “Innovative Tools for Bioeconomy: the case of microalgae production.”

    Production

Microalgae production is a key source of valuable bioproducts, including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and various other beneficial compounds. However, their extraction involves a complex, multi-stage process.

First, microalgae are cultivated under controlled conditions, whether in open ponds, closed photobioreactors, or fermenters. The biomass produced this way is then harvested and dehydrated. To release the contents of the cells, it is necessary to remove the cell walls. This can be done through mechanical, chemical, or enzymatic methods. Next step is the extraction process, where organic solvents, alkalis, acids, and enzymes are utilized to isolate specific compounds. The resulting extracts are then separated and purified to obtain the product.

For example, high-purity proteins are extracted using alkaline extraction or enzymatic hydrolysis, while Omega-3 fatty acids are obtained through lipid extraction with organic solvents followed by separation. Vitamins and natural pigments are extracted using specialized solvents. Antioxidants and other specific compounds are extracted using solvent extraction and chromatography

    Areas of use

Proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates derived from microalgae have potential applications in the food industry, for example, as additives, ingredients for functional foods, and aquaculture feed. Vitamins, pigments, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds can be used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and dietary supplements. In the energy sector, lipids are used for the production of biodiesel, while carbohydrates are used for bioethanol. In agriculture, microalgal biomass is becoming a biofertilizer. Furthermore, microalgae are used for wastewater treatment and in the production of biodegradable plastics.

Bioeconomy uses microalgae for several reasons:

    1. Microalgae exhibit rapid growth rates, allowing for the production of biomass in significant quantities in a short time frame.
    2. It does not require arable land, as they can be cultivated in controlled environments.
    3. Microalgae are capable of absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere, helping to mitigate the greenhouse effect.
    4. It also plays a crucial role in bioremediation, cleaning up wastewater and contaminated sites.
    5. The diverse range of microalgal species, each with its unique composition, opens up avenues for a wide variety of products.

Microalgae hold significant potential for addressing both food and environmental security issues. Their application in bioremediation and biofuel production is becoming increasingly prevalent. A key aspect of developing effective solutions is the selection of microorganisms. Therefore, research aimed at discovering new strains of microalgae with unique traits, such as mixotrophy, is particularly relevant today.

    Anna Popkova

Deputy Director for International Activities at the Institute of Ecology of RUDN

Microalgae provide proteins and micronutrients to the population, addressing the global challenge of food security. They also play a crucial role in ensuring energy security by offering renewable sources of biofuels, which helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The exciting prospects for using microalgae are tied to advancements in cultivation, processing, and scaling up production technologies. In the future, we can expect the emergence of new bioproducts derived from microalgae, as well as an expansion of their applications across various industries.

    Technologies for cultivating microalgae

There are several technologies for cultivating microalgae.

    • Open ponds represent the most cost-effective option, although they do not allow for complete control over growth conditions.
    • Closed photobioreactors provide more regulated environments, ensuring higher productivity and biomass purity, but they come with a significantly higher price tag.
    • Hybrid systems blend elements of open ponds and closed photobioreactors to optimize the production process.
    • Additionally, fermenters are used for cultivating certain types of microalgae in the dark, utilizing organic substrates for growth.

The implementation of these technologies in production comes with a range of challenges and obstacles. The high costs of production require substantial investments in equipment and infrastructure. Additionally, the low productivity of certain strains and processing methods needs further optimization and scaling efforts. Cultivation and processing processes are highly energy-intensive, highlighting the need to develop more efficient and environmentally friendly solutions. Another critical concern is the risk of water body eutrophication when microalgae are used in bioremediation, which necessitates strict monitoring and regulation. On top of this, scaling up laboratory innovations to industrial production remains challenging, compounded by logistical issues and difficulties in storing biomass and derived products.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: OLAF and EUIPO join forces to fight counterfeits in everyday products

    Source: European Anti-Fraud Offfice

    Press release no 19/2025
    PDF version

The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) co-organised a two-day conference in Alicante, Spain to discuss current and emerging trends in intellectual property (IP) crime related to the sector of Fast-Moving-Consumer-Goods (FMCG). The event took place from 1-2 July and brought together more than 50 participants, including customs officers, police, market surveillance authorities, EU and international bodies and representatives from the industry.

The so-called Fast-Moving-Consumer-Goods (FMCG) include everyday items such as personal care and home care items, packaged food, snacks, soft drinks and household batteries. These items are often targeted by fraudsters due to high consumer demand, short shelf lives and high turnover that reaches hundreds of billions every year.

The economic scale of this sector makes it a lucrative target for counterfeit products, which are increasingly making their way into people’s homes. However, counterfeit goods not only harm legitimate businesses but can also pose serious risks to consumer health and safety as they oftentimes fail to comply with the European standards and regulations. The infiltration of fake products leads to significant economic damage – undermining fair competition, causing loss of revenue for legitimate producers, which ultimately results in job losses across affected industries.

To address this growing threat, OLAF and EUIPO co-hosted a two-day conference titled “The Counterfeit Closed: Uncovering Fake Products in Your Home and on Your Shelf”, held at the EUIPO premises in Alicante, Spain. The aim was to share information and best practices, discuss enforcement tools as well as practical insights on how to improve detection and strengthen cooperation to protect consumers and business from fake products. For more information, see the EUIPO news item.

“This conference is yet another concrete step in reinforcing EU’s fight against fraud involving intellectual property,” said OLAF Director-General Ville Itälä. “By working together across borders and sectors, we are better equipped to stop counterfeit goods at the source and protect European consumers, industry and markets.”

    Background

The conference is part of an ongoing cooperation between OLAF and EUIPO, under a service-level agreement launched in 2022. Together, the two institutions organise major knowledge-sharing events each year, focused on strengthening enforcement against intellectual property crimes.

    03 July 2025

Plans for a memorial and garden to remember those who died at Haut du Mont have been unveiled.

Family members of the 10 people who died and those who lost their homes in the explosion in December 2022 have been closely involved in the design and features of the garden which will be built at the site on Pier Road.

Government of Jersey Principal Architect Barry Freeman has been working with the families to incorporate their wishes into the design which will soon be submitted for planning permission.

Among the details the families and former residents suggested are the inclusion of the favourite flowers of those who died and a separate play area for young children.

The garden will feature an area where the names of those who died will be captured on seating and separate quiet places where people can sit, reflect and look at the view across St Aubin’s Bay.

Karlene McGinness, whose mother Kathy died following the explosion, is among the family members whose views have been incorporated into the design.

Speaking on behalf of her family, she said: “We’re really pleased that the plans for the memorial site are now progressing.

“Our mum’s home always had an incredibly welcoming and warm feel, which was reflective of the loving, happy, and caring person that she was. So it’s important to us that the memorial site has personal elements which can reflect the kind of person that she was. There’s clearly been a lot of thought given to making sure the design and details have a personal feel, and we’re pleased with that.

“We hope that once it’s in place, it’ll be a pleasant space where we can go to reflect, remember our mum, and reminisce with our family and her friends about all the good times.

“Our mum loved nothing more than playing with her grandchildren. It will certainly be a place we’ll go with our children to play, talk about all our lovely memories of her, and keep her memory alive.”

Architect Barry Freeman said: “This has been one of the most heartfelt and important things I have worked on in my 33-year career.

“Working so closely with those who lost loved ones and those who lost their homes has been a privilege, and we have done our best to incorporate all their requests into the final plans.

“I hope the memorial and garden will become a place for all Islanders to reflect, remember and heal, whatever they are going through. I also hope it will stand as something that will help future generations to learn lessons that may avoid other tragedies.”

  • Australian govt confirms $2.2 billion funding for 2032 Brisbane Games venues

The Australian government has confirmed it will contribute A$3.435 billion ($2.25 billion) towards the A$7.1 billion cost of building the venues for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, clearing the way for the start of construction.

Queensland taxpayers and private finance will provide the balance of the money for the 17 new and upgraded venues for the Summer Games under the funding deal announced by state and federal governments on Thursday.

“The Sydney 2000 Games left an incredible legacy and many Australians have memories that have lasted for decades,” Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said in a statement.

“We are ready to deliver a Brisbane 2032 games that will leave the same incredible legacy for Queensland.

“The Australian government’s commitment of A$3.4 billion towards the Games venues is the single largest contribution any Australian government has made towards sporting infrastructure in this country.”

Brisbane was awarded hosting rights for the Games in 2021 but political wrangling over the venues meant the final plans were not decided until March this year.

Organising committee chief Andrew Liveris welcomed Thursday’s announcement as a “significant shift in forward momentum”.

“I thank the Australian and Queensland governments for moving swiftly following the Australian government’s recent return to office to agree on intergovernmental funding that will ensure physical works can get underway …” he said.

The main stadium, which is estimated to cost A$3.7 billion, will be built in the city’s Victoria Park and seat 60,000 during the Olympics and 3,000 more for Australian Rules football and cricket matches after 2032.

A new aquatics centre to host the swimming in 2032 will also be built nearby at an estimated cost of A$650 million.

“Today’s landmark agreement is the beginning of a new partnership that sets the pathway to deliver 2032 as the best Games ever,” said Queensland’s Deputy Prime Minister Jarrod Bleijie.

“We’ve also launched procurement on four key projects to kickstart the delivery of world-class venues in the delivery plan.

“I can also announce that we will start site investigations at Victoria Park for Australia’s most exciting sporting precinct that will be home to the new main stadium and the new National Aquatic Centre.”

Liveris said in May that he did not think any ground would be broken on the two major new venues until the end of 2026.

The federal government has already committed A$12.4 billion for local transport improvements that the Queensland government believes are necessary for 2032, the statement said.

  • Ukraine voices concern as US halts some missile shipments

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

A decision by Washington to halt some shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine prompted warnings by Kyiv on Wednesday that the move would weaken its ability to defend against intensifying airstrikes and battlefield advances.

Ukraine said it had called in the acting U.S. envoy to Kyiv to underline the importance of military aid from Washington continuing, and cautioned that any cut-off would embolden Russia in its war in Ukraine.

The Pentagon’s decision – tied to concerns that U.S. military stockpiles are too low – began in recent days and includes 30 Patriot air defence missiles, which Ukraine relies on to destroy fast-moving ballistic missiles, four people familiar with the decision said on Wednesday.

It also includes nearly 8,500 155mm artillery shells, more than 250 precision GMLRS (mobile rocket artillery) missiles and 142 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles, they said.

“The Ukrainian side emphasised that any delay or procrastination in supporting Ukraine‘s defence capabilities will only encourage the aggressor to continue the war and terror, rather than seek peace,” Ukraine‘s foreign ministry said.

The defence ministry said it had not been officially notified of any halt in U.S. shipments and was seeking clarity from its American counterparts.

A Ukrainian source familiar with the situation said the decision was a “total shock.”

Deputy White House press secretary Anna Kelly said the decision was made “to put America’s interests first” following a Department of Defense review of military support around the world.

“The strength of the United States Armed Forces remains unquestioned — just ask Iran,” she said, referring to U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities last month.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the U.S. needed to take care of its stockpiles but told Fox News that “in the short term, Ukraine cannot do without all the support it can get” when it comes to ammunition and air defence systems.

    RUSSIAN AIRSTRIKES

Dozens of people have been killed in recent airstrikes on Ukrainian cities and Russian forces, which control about a fifth of Ukraine, have been making gains in the east.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the decision risks Ukrainian lives, undermines Washington’s credibility and will make it harder to end the war.

“This sends a message to not just our allies, like Ukraine and our European allies, but it sends a message to our adversaries, to China, to North Korea, to Russia, that our allies can’t count on the United States,” she told WKBK radio in her home state New Hampshire.

Since U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January, he has softened Washington’s position towards Russia, seeking a diplomatic solution to the war and raising doubts about future U.S. military support for Kyiv.

Trump said last week he was considering selling more Patriot air defence missiles to Ukraine after meeting President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Fedir Venislavskyi, a member of the Ukrainian parliament’s national security and defence committee, said the decision to halt shipments was “very unpleasant for us“.

In an email, the Pentagon said it was providing Trump with options to continue military aid to Ukraine in line with the goal of ending the war.

Elbridge Colby, undersecretary of defence for policy, said it was “rigorously examining and adapting its approach…while also preserving U.S. forces’ readiness.”

All weapons aid was briefly stopped in February, with a second, longer halt in March. Washington resumed sending the last of the aid approved under the previous administration, of Democratic President Joe Biden, but no new aid to Ukraine has been announced.

The Kremlin welcomed the news of a halt, saying the conflict would end sooner if fewer arms reached Ukraine.

Kyiv residents expressed alarm at the Pentagon’s decision.

“If we end up in a situation where there’s no air defence left, I will move (out of Kyiv), because my safety is my first concern,” said Oksana Kurochkina, a 35-year-old lawyer.

On the battlefield, a halt in precision munitions would limit the capacity of Ukrainian troops to strike Russian positions farther behind the front line, said Jack Watling, a military analyst at the Royal United Services Institute.

“In short, this decision will cost Ukrainian lives and territory,” he said.
