    Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth ₹1,271 crore in Uttarakhand, during the ‘Uttarakhand Investment Festival 2025’ held in Dehradun. The event also marked the realization of ₹1 lakh crore worth of investment in the hill state, following commitments made during the 2023 Global Investors Summit.

    The event was attended by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta, and Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, among other dignitaries.

    Speaking at the event, Shah praised the state government for successfully translating investment MoUs into action. “At the 2023 Global Investors Summit, Uttarakhand received MoUs worth ₹3.56 lakh crore. Today, ₹1 lakh crore worth of investments have materialized, creating over 81,000 jobs. Ancillary industries are expected to generate another 2.5 lakh employment opportunities,” he said.

    Shah lauded the Dhami-led administration for maintaining a balance between industrial growth and environmental sustainability. “Bringing investment to a landlocked, hilly state like Uttarakhand is no small feat. But the Chief Minister has achieved this by ensuring transparent policies, swift implementation, and strategic planning,” he added.

    Highlighting Uttarakhand’s spiritual and cultural importance, Shah described it as the “Dev Bhoomi,” and emphasized that no force could hinder its progress. “This is the land of one Jyotirlinga, three Shakti Peethas, the Char Dham, Panch Prayag, Panch Kedar, and Sapt Badri. Uttarakhand represents a confluence of nature, culture, and spirituality,” he said.

    He announced that infrastructure projects like the ₹2,700 crore Govind Ghat–Hemkund Sahib ropeway and the ₹4,000 crore Sonprayag–Kedarnath ropeway would further boost tourism. “Once the Char Dham all-weather road project is complete, tourists will visit Uttarakhand year-round,” he said.

    The home minister also targeted the opposition for allegedly obstructing development works. “The practice of disrupting state development must stop. When the state progresses, it is the responsibility of every political party to support it,” he remarked.

    On national development, Shah said that the Modi government had shattered the belief that industrial progress and welfare couldn’t go hand in hand. “From free food grains to over 80 crore people, to free medical treatment under Ayushman Bharat, to tap water and toilets for crores of households — these efforts prove inclusive growth is possible,” he said.

    Shah further added that Uttarakhand was benefiting from stable policies and sector-specific initiatives such as tourism, AYUSH, startups, film policy, and logistics. Ayurveda, yoga, organic farming, and natural therapies, he said, would form the four pillars of the state’s development.

    Drawing comparisons with the UPA era, Shah said that while the previous government provided ₹53,000 crore to Uttarakhand between 2004 and 2014, the Modi-led government had allocated ₹1.86 lakh crore from 2014 to 2024. “This includes ₹31,000 crore for roads, ₹40,000 crore for railways, and ₹100 crore for airport development. Overall, the funding has been more than four times higher,” he said.

    Shah said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation for a developed India by 2047, and that dream would not be possible without the holistic development of small and eastern states, including Uttarakhand.

    Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha said on Sunday that peace in the Union Territory will not be purchased but established by dismantling the entire terror machinery.

    Speaking at a function here, the L-G emphasized that the administration is not working to “buy peace,” but to build a lasting and just one in the region.

    Sinha said that while no innocent person will be harmed, the guilty will not be spared. He also highlighted the pivotal role being played by the J&K Police in dismantling the terror ecosystem.

    “J&K Police has a crucial responsibility to eliminate the support system of terrorists, whether financial, logistical, or otherwise. It is not just the terrorists who must be dealt with, but the entire machinery that supports them,” the L-G stressed.

    He criticised the past approach in which individuals linked to terror activities were given government jobs, while victims of terrorism were neglected and left to fend for themselves.

    “The administration is now actively working to rehabilitate families who have suffered at the hands of terrorists. Many have lost their loved ones. In some homes, only elderly parents remain after their sons were brutally killed. Thousands were murdered at the behest of Pakistan. On July 13, forty terror victim families in Baramulla were provided appointment letters,” he said.

    “Some youths lost their fathers when they were just two years old. Today, we are ensuring that their pain is acknowledged and justice is delivered. Naya Jammu and Kashmir is not just a slogan—it is a reality that has evolved over the past few years. Now, pens and laptops have replaced stones in the hands of the youth. Schools and colleges remain open year-round without hartals. The days of separatist slogans and shutdown calendars are over,” the L-G added.

    “Today, our calendars are filled with national and international events,” he said.

    L-G Sinha further said that the rattle of guns has been replaced by the hum of factories. People now freely participate in religious and cultural events like Muharram processions and Eid melas, and families can move about without fear—even watching movies in cinema halls.

    “People must join hands with the security forces. Peace is not just the absence of conflict; it is the presence of justice, opportunity, and hope. And we are committed to making that peace a permanent reality,” he said.

    Earlier, L-G said that all properties of terror victims usurped by vested interests backed by terrorists will be restored to their rightful owners by August this year.

    Eskom has encouraged all South Africans to use electricity efficiently throughout the rest of the winter season and avoid illegal connections as well as meter bypassing.

    “With load shedding suspended and electricity demand rising during the winter period, Eskom has urged all customers to act responsibly and help safeguard the power system,” Eskom said on Friday.

    Illegal connections and meter bypassing not only constitute theft but also place immense strain on the network, often leading to transformer overloads, equipment damage, and in severe cases, explosions and extended outages.

    “To protect critical infrastructure, Eskom is compelled to implement load reduction by switching off power during peak hours in high-risk, isolated areas to prevent potential damage. 

    “To help maintain a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply, customers are strongly urged to avoid bypassing meters and refrain from illegal connections,” the power utility said in a statement on Friday.

    Electricity should be purchased only through Eskom-accredited vendors, and users are encouraged to regularise their electricity usage. 

    “These steps are essential to ensuring safe, reliable, and fair access to electricity for all. Eligible households are encouraged to register for free basic electricity with their local municipalities,” Eskom said.

    The public has been urged to report any illegal activity impacting Eskom’s infrastructure by contacting the Eskom Crime Line at 0800 112 722 or via WhatsApp on 081 333 3323.

    KABUL, July 20 (Xinhua) — More than 1,500 Afghan refugee families returned home from neighboring Iran and Pakistan on Saturday, state-run Bakhtar News Agency reported Sunday.

    According to him, a total of 1,576 families returned to Afghanistan on Saturday, of which 81 families came from Pakistan and the remaining 1,495 from Iran. All the returnees were reportedly provided with necessary assistance at checkpoints.

    The return of Afghan refugees has been gathering momentum in recent months as host countries pressure undocumented refugees to return to Afghanistan.

    July 20 2025 – The UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves is reportedly contemplating a sale of the country’s confiscated Bitcoin stash—some 61,000 BTC seized in a 2018 fraud bust—to alleviate an estimated £20 billion fiscal shortfall.

    But while offloading crypto could offer short-term relief, Nigel Green, the CEO of global financial advisory giant deVere Group warns it may echo past errors and undermine long-term strategy.

    “Turning these assets into instant cash is tempting, but it risks repeating historical errors,” he says, highlighting the lessons of previous government asset sales that have gone sour.

    Bitcoin on Sunday surged past the $118,000 mark—its highest point since the $123,000 peak.

    The proposal arrives amidst a wider pro-crypto pivot. The UK recently lifted restrictions on retail ETNs in June, aiming to become a fintech powerhouse. The surge in regulatory clarity, combined with rising institutional interest, has bolstered Bitcoin’s legitimacy, with sovereign holdings under serious consideration globally.

    Despite this backdrop, Nigel Green voices strong concern. “If we advocate crypto as strategic, then hastily disposing of seized Bitcoin is hypocritical—and harmful.”

    “Fiscal pressure shouldn’t drive poor asset decisions.”

    He continues: “That’s all the more pressing given restoration obligations—victims must be compensated, law enforcement gets its cut, and legal overheads pile up. Net receipts may shrink to 20–30% of gross proceeds—far less than headlines suggest.

    “This isn’t free money. Court battles and administrative fees will eat into what the Treasury actually sees.”

    Economists often cite gold sales in the late 1990s as a cautionary tale. Sold at depressed prices, the assets were later criticized for heavy losses when bullion rose.

    The deVere CEO draws a parallel: “They sold gold in a dip, only to regret it years later. We risk replaying that error with Bitcoin.”

    Indeed, proper timing matters—”emergency fiscal relief is not always best served by fire-sale tactics.”

    He has previously urged the UK to build a “strategic Bitcoin reserve,” akin to moves under consideration in the US.

    His track record of bullish forecasts—Bitcoin nearing $125k—is rooted in believing digital assets will anchor future economic frameworks.

    He reiterates: “If countries like the US, the world’s largest economy, are seriously weighing Bitcoin as a reserve, why would the UK liquidate instead?”

    Far from being a gamble, it’s a bet on diversification and monetary education. As Nigel Green notes: “Bitcoin can act like digital gold—it’s scarce, decentralized, and a hedge against inflation.”

    The consequences extend beyond Pounds and pence—they speak to perception: “How the Chancellor handles this will shape market and public confidence. It’s about whether we lead intelligently—or just chase headlines.”

    Indeed, rushed asset sales project instability—it broadcasts that policy swings on crypto are driven by urgency, not strategy. This risks turning the UK from crypto innovator to cautionary tale.

    SEOUL, July 20 (Xinhua) — Fourteen people have been killed and 12 others are missing after five days of heavy rains hit the Republic of Korea (ROK), the country’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety said Sunday.

    India is taking steady and confident steps towards oil self-sufficiency, and under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the country is securing its energy future, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Sunday.

    With one million square kilometres of offshore area now open for oilfield exploration and 99 per cent of ‘No-Go’ areas cleared, the minister announced on social media platform X that the groundwork is being laid for major energy progress.

    The oil and gas blocks offered under the Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) have already attracted interest from both global and domestic energy players, and Round X is expected to set new benchmarks for participation and investment.

    “25 blocks under OALP-X; 154 exploration blocks active; 14 new oil and gas discoveries; ₹792 crore invested in Mission Anveshan; 6,200 GLKM of seismic data already collected; ONGC producing 34,000 BOPD oil and 3 MMSCMD gas,” he said.

    This month, the Petroleum Ministry invited feedback and suggestions on the Draft Petroleum and Natural Gas Rules, Model Revenue Sharing Contract (MRSC), and Petroleum Lease – part of a series of pathbreaking policy reforms aimed at promoting exploration and production in the oil and gas sector.

    The Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Act, 1948, was amended in March 2025, and the new PNG Rules were issued within three months, ahead of OALP Round X – the largest exploration and production bidding round globally, aligned with PM Modi’s vision for the sector.

    “This is a great time for entrepreneurs and industry leaders to look at oil and gas exploration in India. It has never been easier, faster, or more profitable to invest in India’s energy future,” Puri said.

    The minister also highlighted that clean cooking fuel is now part of daily life for nearly every Indian, with close to 100 per cent geographic and population coverage.

    “From 55 cities in 2014 to 300+ cities and towns, from 25 lakh kitchens to 1.5 crore homes today – India’s city gas distribution networks have ushered in a revolution under PM Modi,” he added.

    U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday signed the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act, or GENIUS Act, into law, marking the country’s first major federal law governing cryptocurrencies.

    Passed by a bipartisan majority in Congress, the legislation gave an immediate boost to market sentiment: the total value of cryptoassets surged past $4 trillion, according to CoinGecko, a cryptocurrency data aggregator website.

    “This could be perhaps the greatest revolution in financial technology since the birth of the Internet itself,” said Trump.

    What are stablecoins?

    Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, stablecoins are designed to hold a steady value by being pegged one-to-one to a stable asset, usually to the U.S. dollar. For every stablecoin in circulation, the issuing company is expected to hold equivalent reserves, such as cash or short-term Treasury bonds.

    In a Brookings Institution report, stablecoins currently in circulation have a collective market capitalization of over $250 billion with approximately 99% pegged to the U.S. dollar.

    Among major stablecoin issuers are Tether (USDT) with a market cap of nearly $161 billion, and Circle (USDC) with about $65 billion, according to data from CoinMarketCap.

    “At the end of the day, it’s about being able to send dollars outside of banking hours and to send dollars the way you and I might interact with WhatsApp or messaging platforms,” Circle’s chief strategy officer Dante Disparte told CBS in a recent interview.

    With the GENIUS Act passed, banks, nonbanks and credit unions could dive into the market by issuing their own stablecoins, local media reported.

    Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser said on the company’s earnings call Tuesday that the bank is considering issuing its own form of the cryptocurrency.

    Pros and cons

    Stablecoins emerged in 2014 and have since ballooned in popularity particularly for their potential use in digital payments, said Darrell Duffie, a professor of finance at Stanford University.

    The total market value of stablecoins soared from $20 billion  in 2020 to $246 billion in May 2025, according to analysts at Deutsche Bank.

    U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty said stablecoins could allow businesses and consumers to settle payments “nearly instantaneously,” as opposed to the current system, which can take weeks.

    In some developing countries, where dollars aren’t easily accessible, firms with international partners are turning to stablecoins to speed up transfers that would otherwise take days or weeks through traditional banks.

    However, stablecoins come with mounting concerns. Among the biggest are the depegging risks. If reserve assets lose value or liquidity, stablecoins may break their peg. This can trigger trading losses or systemic market risks to insolvency and liquidity, as seen during the 2023 banking crisis, said a report from S&P Global Ratings.

    Another risk is lack of transparency. John Reed Stark, a former top financial regulator who served as chief of the SEC Office of Internet Enforcement, said, “In most instances, we have no visibility to any stablecoins, no public audits, no examinations, no inspections — who knows what is really going on?”

    A further concern revolves around the potential use of stablecoins by illicit actors, such as drug dealers and scammers. Zhao Yao, a researcher at Renmin University of China, said that the anonymity and decentralized nature of stablecoins could facilitate money laundering and other illegal transactions.

    Implications for U.S. and global finance

    The GENIUS Act aligns with Trump’s pledge to make the United States “the crypto capital of the world.”

    Christian Catalini, founder of the MIT Cryptoeconomics Lab, said this move could usher in mainstream adoption of stablecoins for digital payments and spur growth in the stablecoin industry.

    Lawmakers also passed two other crypto bills, rounding out what Republicans called “Crypto Week.” The Clarity Act will regulate digital commodities beyond stablecoins, and the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act prevents the Federal Reserve from issuing any retail central bank digital currency directly to Americans. The Trump administration and crypto advocates see the moves as a step toward mainstream adoption, local media reported.

    Eneko Knorr, CEO of Stabolut, said that stablecoins “strengthen dollar dominance” by boosting demand for dollars and U.S. Treasuries in global trade — though others like Dean Baker, co-director at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, argued that the benefits are “trivial” compared to central bank digital currencies, which offer similar advantages without the risks of private issuers.

    However, one point of controversy in this legislation is whether and how to restrict the ability of the president and other federal politicians from issuing stablecoins of their own, wrote a Brookings Institution commentary.

    The Trump family has direct ties to crypto ventures, including a meme coin called $TRUMP, and a business called World Liberty Financial, which has launched a stablecoin called USD1 — though the White House has said that there are no conflicts of interest present for Trump and that his assets are in a trust managed by his children.

    Hillary Allen, a law professor at American University, said in an interview with CNN that the crypto industry poured money into Trump’s reelection campaign and congressional races. “This is the return on investment for the campaign spending by the crypto industry,” Allen said.

    Critics also worry about unintended macroeconomic consequences. The Economist warned if consumers move funds from bank deposits into stablecoins, banks could lose key funding sources, limiting their ability to lend.

    It also pointed out an irony in U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s ambition to popularize stablecoins globally: Efforts to expand stablecoin use abroad could backfire economically at home — strengthening the dollar but undermining U.S. exports and trade goals.

    Torrential rains that pounded South Korea for four consecutive days have left at least nine people dead and several others missing, after downpours triggered deadly landslides in the southern Sancheong County, officials said.

    A person in their 60s was found in cardiac arrest after a landslide, triggered by heavy rain, engulfed homes in a village in Sancheong, South Gyeongsang Province, on Saturday morning.

    In a separate incident, a landslide in another village in Sancheong killed two others in their home, while a deadly mudslide swept through homes in a different village in the county shortly after noon, leaving two people dead and one missing, according to fire authorities.

    Also in Sancheong, another individual was found in cardiac arrest around noon after their home was inundated by rain. Sancheong County issued an alert urging all residents to evacuate to safety, Yonhap News Agency reported.

    In the nearby city of Miryang, also in South Gyeongsang Province, a driver in his 60s was killed after floodwaters swept away his car.

    Authorities said five people were confirmed dead, two were missing, and two others were found in cardiac arrest in the province on Saturday alone, as record rainfall battered the region. Firefighters continued rescue operations to locate those still unaccounted for.

    South Gyeongsang is among the regions hardest hit by the recent downpours, with some areas receiving more than 700 millimetres of rain between Wednesday and Saturday.

    The National Fire Agency issued a nationwide firefighting mobilisation order in response to the landslides.

    So far, central and local government authorities have reported five deaths and four missing persons since the onset of the rain on Wednesday. Four of the five people killed in South Gyeongsang on Saturday were not yet included in the official death toll.

    The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters is expected to release updated figures on casualties and damage assessments later in the day.

    Weather authorities have warned that up to 250 mm of additional rainfall could fall within the day, raising concerns about further damage and casualties.

    Evacuation orders have been issued for 7,029 residents from 4,995 households, with more than 2,800 people still unable to return home.

    The torrential downpours have inundated roads, triggered landslides, and flooded homes across the country. Overnight rainfall remained extreme in many regions.

    Incheon’s Yeongheung Island saw 98.5 mm of rain fall in just one hour, between 12:50 a.m. and 1:50 a.m., while Boseong in South Jeolla Province received 88 mm in the same time frame.

    Some areas have already received over 40 percent of their annual average rainfall in the past four days. Seosan recorded 558.6 mm of rain from Wednesday to Friday morning — equivalent to 45 percent of its yearly average.

    A total of 729 cases of public infrastructure damage have been reported, including 388 flooded roads, 133 landslides, and 57 river facility collapses. Private property damage reached 1,014 cases, including 64 flooded buildings and 59 instances of submerged farmland.

    TOKYO, July 20 (Xinhua) — Voting began in Japan on Sunday morning for the upper house (House of Councillors) election, with a total of 522 candidates running in the intense battle between the ruling and opposition camps.

    The House of Councillors consists of 248 members. The term of office of statesmen is 6 years. Every three years, half of the composition of the House is renewed.

    The ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner Komeito currently hold 75 seats that are not up for re-election. They need to win 50 seats in this election to maintain their majority.

    The bar is seen as relatively low for the ruling bloc, which controlled the upper house of parliament before the election, although Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who faces low public support amid serious problems such as rising prices and high US tariffs, has called it a tall order.

    In the October 2024 general election, the ruling coalition lost its majority in the more powerful House of Representatives (lower house), forcing Mr. Ishiba to form Japan’s first minority government in more than three decades.

  • Clashes rage in Druze region as Syria struggles to enforce ceasefire

    Sectarian clashes escalated on Saturday in Syria’s predominantly Druze region of Sweida, with machine gun fire and mortar shelling heard after days of bloodshed, as the Islamist-led government struggled to enforce a ceasefire.

    Reuters reporters heard gunfire from inside Sweida city and saw shells landing in nearby villages. There were no immediate, confirmed reports of casualties.

    The government had announced that security forces were being deployed to the southern region in an effort to maintain peace and urged all parties to halt fighting after nearly a week of factional violence in which hundreds have been killed.

    Late on Saturday, the interior ministry said clashes in Sweida city had subsided and the area had been cleared of Bedouin tribal fighters following the deployment.

    The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reported that at least 940 people had been killed in clashes around Sweida since last week. Reuters could not independently verify the death toll.

    Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa stated that “Arab and American” mediation had helped restore calm before the latest escalation. He also criticized Israel for conducting airstrikes earlier in the week.

    Violence in Druze Region Challenges Damascus

    The fighting poses a fresh challenge to the authority of Sharaa’s Islamist-dominated government, which assumed power after rebels ousted autocratic President Bashar al-Assad in December.

    The unrest began last week as clashes between the Druze—a religious minority native to southern Syria, the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and parts of Lebanon and Jordan—and Syrian Bedouin tribes. Government forces intervened to defuse tensions but ended up clashing with Druze gunmen and attacking Druze communities.

    Saturday’s violence once again pitted Druze fighters against Bedouin tribesmen, according to eyewitnesses.

    The conflict has drawn in neighboring Israel, which launched airstrikes in southern Syria and on the defense ministry in Damascus while Syrian government forces battled Druze fighters. Israel claims it is acting to protect the Druze, who also form a notable minority in Israel.

    However, Israel and Washington remain divided over Syria. The U.S. supports a centralized Syrian state under Sharaa’s leadership, which has pledged to govern for all citizens. Israel, however, argues that the government is dominated by jihadists and poses a threat to minorities.

    In March, Syrian government forces were implicated in mass killings of members of the Alawite minority, from which much of Assad’s elite hailed.

    Tensions at a Boiling Point

    On Saturday, the Syrian presidency issued a statement announcing an immediate ceasefire and called for an end to hostilities. President Sharaa declared that Syria would not become “a testing ground for partition, secession, or sectarian incitement.”

    He blamed Druze gunmen for the latest outbreak, accusing them of launching revenge attacks against Bedouins.

    Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned Sharaa’s remarks, saying he was siding with the attackers. “In al-Sharaa’s Syria, it is very dangerous to be a member of a minority—Kurd, Druze, Alawite, or Christian,” he wrote on X.

    On Friday, U.S. envoy Tom Barrack announced that Syria and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire. Barrack, who serves as both U.S. ambassador to Turkey and Washington’s Syria envoy, called on Druze, Bedouins, Sunnis, and other minority groups to “build a new and united Syrian identity.”

    Israel has repeatedly targeted Syrian military facilities since Assad’s fall, saying it wants southern Syria, particularly areas near its border, to remain demilitarized. On Friday, an Israeli official said Israel had agreed to allow Syrian forces limited access to Sweida for two days.

    Sweida Hospital Overwhelmed

    Mansour Namour, a resident of a village near Sweida city, reported that mortar shells were still falling near his home on Saturday afternoon, with at least 22 people wounded.

    Dr. Omar Obeid, director of a local hospital in Sweida, said the facility was overwhelmed. “The hospital is full of bodies and wounded from the past few days. All the injuries are from bombs—some with chest wounds, others with shrapnel injuries to their limbs,” he said.

    Japanese voters could unleash political turmoil as they head to the polls on Sunday in a tightly contested upper house election, with rising prices and immigration concerns threatening to weaken Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s grip on power.

    Opinion polls suggest Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner Komeito may fall short of the 50 seats needed to retain control of the 248-seat upper house of parliament, in an election where half the seats are up for grabs.

    Polls show that smaller opposition parties pushing for tax cuts and increased public spending are set to gain — among them, the right-wing Sanseito, which vows to curb immigration, oppose foreign capital inflows, and reverse gender equality initiatives.

    A poor showing by the coalition could shake investor confidence in the world’s fourth-largest economy and disrupt critical trade talks with the United States, analysts said.

    Ishiba may have to choose between stepping aside for a new LDP leader or scrambling to secure the backing of some opposition parties through policy compromises, said Rintaro Nishimura, an associate at the Asia Group in Japan.

    “Each scenario requires the LDP and Komeito to make certain concessions, and will be challenging, as any potential partner has leverage in the negotiations,” he added.

    After the election, Japan faces a deadline of August 1 to strike a trade deal with the United States or risk punishing tariffs in its largest export market.

    Such import levies could squeeze the economy and further pressure the government to provide financial relief to households already reeling from inflation — including a doubling of rice prices since last year.

    With an eye on a jittery government bond market, the LDP has called for fiscal restraint, rejecting opposition demands for major tax cuts and increased welfare spending to soften the blow.

    Ishiba’s administration lost its majority in the more powerful lower house in October — the LDP’s worst showing in 15 years — roiling financial markets and leaving the prime minister vulnerable to no-confidence motions that could topple his administration and trigger a fresh general election.

    Police said a male driver had been shot while being assaulted by onlookers and was taken to a hospital. His condition remains unknown.

    Ruled by the LDP for most of the post-war period, Japan has so far largely avoided the social divisions and political fracturing seen in other industrialised democracies.

    Voting ends at 8 p.m. (1100 GMT), when media outlets are expected to project results based on exit polls.

    South Korea’s special counsel investigating former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s short-lived martial law imposition on Saturday indicted the ousted leader under detention on additional charges.

    Cho Eun-suk, independent counsel leading the investigation into Yoon’s insurrection and other charges, prosecuted Yoon for abusing power, obstructing justice, writing bogus official documents, violating the presidential records act and committing other wrongdoings.

    Yoon was charged with failing to follow proper procedures for the martial law imposition, ordering the presidential security service to block attempts in January to arrest him and giving order to delete information on security phones offered to military commanders.

    A warrant to detain Yoon, sought by the special counsel team that launched its investigation on June 18, was issued nine days earlier for fear of his destroying evidence.

    Yoon was apprehended in presidential office on Jan. 15 and was indicted under detention on Jan. 26 as a suspected ringleader of insurrection, but he was released on March 8 as prosecutors decided not to appeal against the court’s release approval.

    The constitutional court upheld a motion to impeach Yoon on April 4 over his botched martial law bid last December, officially removing him from office.

  • MIL-Evening Report: After yet another election, Tasmanians are left wondering what the point of it was

    When the results firmed up a few hours after polling closed on Saturday, many Tasmanians would have been wondering, “what was the point of all that?”.

    A state election only 16 months after the last one looks to have delivered a parliament with a broadly similar distribution of seats.

    The results

    By the time counting ceased last night, the ABC had the Liberals on 14 seats, Labor on nine, the Greens on five, and three confirmed independents.

    With 65.3% of the vote counted, four seats remained in doubt. There was a small positive swing to the Liberals (3.3%), while a swing against Labor of 3.1% has them on track for their worst primary vote in more than a hundred years. The final seats may not be confirmed for a couple of weeks.

    Love, Labor’s lost

    At this stage, it looks like Labor’s gambit – instigating the no confidence motion that led to this election – has utterly failed. The party will now need to engage in some sober self-reflection on two fronts.

    First, there is the one-dimensional strategy that brought on the election and allowed the Liberals to blame Labor – and leader Dean Winter in particular – for dragging Tasmanians to the polls again.

    Labor had hoped that targeting the no confidence motion specifically at Premier Jeremy Rockliff would encourage the conservative-leaning Liberal cabinet to turf out their moderate leader.

    It was a near thing. Rockliff’s rivals apparently had almost enough votes to depose him by the time the Governor called the election.

    But did anyone at Labor HQ plan for what would happen if their gamble failed and the Liberals held firm under Rockliff? As Labor’s woefully under-prepared campaign stumbled into motion, it seemed the answer was “no”.

    Second, there will be questions asked about that lacklustre campaign, just as there were in 2024. An opposition could not ask for more favourable conditions: an 11-year incumbent government suffering a string of high profile policy failures; a looming mountain of debt; and ongoing health, education, housing, cost of living and sustainability challenges.

    And yet, Labor suffered negative swings in every seat, and they are battling to match their 2024 result of 10 seats.

    Liberals and Greens hold firm

    The Liberals will be pleased with the result. In the face of the dire circumstances outlined above, they have secured a positive swing in their primary vote and may pick up one or (at an outside chance) two additional seats.

    It doesn’t seem like their pro-stadium stance lost them votes in the north – where the proposal is unpopular – in part because Labor denied themselves a point of difference by also supporting the stadium.

    Another important factor in the north was the recruitment of two former federal Liberal MPs in Bass and Braddon, who are both polling well so far. However, their success may come at the expense of sitting Liberal members.

    The Greens’ vote held steady, with a projected 0.2% increase in their primary vote. All of their MPs had been returned before the close of counting on Saturday night, and they will be hoping one more can scrape through in Braddon.

    The crossbench zoo

    As expected, ex-Labor MP David O’Byrne, centre-left Kristie Johnston, and maverick Northwester Craig Garland were all returned. Johnston and Garland, in particlar, seem to have strongly increased their vote shares.

    There will be at least one new independent, with anti-salmon farm advocate Peter George securing a very strong primary vote in Franklin off the back of his recent federal campaign.

    There is a chance that this broadly progressive crossbench will be joined by climate change denier and pro-gun rights candidate Carlo di Falco (Lyons) from the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers.

    Where to now?

    So how are the major party leaders approaching the looming period of wheeling and dealing? Who’s forming minority government?

    Rockliff was the first to address the tally room on election night. He boldly claimed that the voters had re-endorsed his Liberal government – based on their increased vote share – and said he will ask the Governor to recommission him as premier.

    However, with only 14 or 15 seats, it will be challenging for the Liberals to implement their agenda in a parliament featuring a crossbench that is, for the most part, solidly progressive and vehemently anti-stadium.

    The Greens’ leader, Rosalie Woodruff, also spoke and again extended an offer of cooperation to Labor.

    Finally, as election night drew to a close, Labor Leader Dean Winter stepped up to speak. His tonally confused speech began with a tribute to murdered Tasmanian Police Constable Keith Smith, then shifted to the need for a more collaborative approach to politics. Winter left things on a cliffhanger, essentially saying “let’s wait and see”.

    Observers in the room noted the speech was strikingly similar to that given by former leader Rebecca White following the 2024 election – shortly before she was replaced by Winter.

    Will Labor have a crack at forming government? There would be a few obstacles to this. First, Winter would have to negotiate support from the diverse crossbench, including the Greens, with whom he has previously vowed not to collaborate.

    He and Labor have ignored previous opportunities to seize government in this way, the most recent being just five weeks ago. A change in tack at this stage could be difficult to sell.

    And if Rockliff forges ahead with his stated plan, Labor and the crossbench would need to vote down a new Liberal minority government on the floor of parliament. Labor would need to be very certain of their ability to govern before doing this – or risk another election.

    So while all of the party leaders spoke of maturity and collaboration in their speeches, until actions match words, Tasmanians will be forced to watch the parliamentary shenanigans continue.

  • MIL-OSI China: China’s AI tech boosts global trade efficiency, facilitates supply chain

    To provide a quick overview of what its digital technology can do for China’s many small and medium-sized exporters, a Nanjing-based software firm put up nine striking Q&A posters at an ongoing trade fair in Beijing.

    “Where is my product most in-demand overseas?” “How can I ensure my product passes customs compliance?” “Customers want low carbon and what should I do?” “How can I make global supply chain more cost-effective?” — SKYTECH’s AI tools can quickly provide tailored solutions to these questions.

    During discussions about fragile global supply chains at the third China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE), participants noted that China’s AI technology is a source of confidence and a promising avenue for building resilience in global trade.

    Qiu Weiwen, a manager from SKYTECH, demonstrated the intelligent system in front of a large screen. “China has the most complete industrial chain in the world, which makes its export product system rather complex, and that’s why we’ve designed an AI system,” he explained.

    For new energy vehicle products, it is necessary to input the origins of components like tires, bearings, and battery cells. Even small changes in parameters can result in different solutions from the large model.

    “The country where the product is assembled might be different from where its components are produced. We can help you analyze which scenario is more advantageous,” Qiu said.

    Another service from the Nanjing firm in east China supports European Union-bound exporters by automating carbon footprint reporting and carbon tariff calculations. Beyond compliance, SKYTECH further delivers strategic guidance enabling clients to capture revenue opportunities through carbon trading schemes.

    At a CISCE roundtable on Friday, SKYTECH spotlighted a success story. Under its support, Chinese solar-panel maker Trina Solar built a low-carbon, digitally optimized line that slashes the carbon footprint of its modules well below France’s entry threshold, unlocking instant access to the European market.

    In the neighboring booth, tech stars from east China’s Zhejiang Province were unveiling their smart new products, and one of them was NetEase’s AI agent for foreign trade firms.

    The NetEase Foreign Trade Express uses “AI employees” to develop overseas customers, with precise inquiries increasing by 30% The AI can automatically identify target customers with an accuracy rate of over 95%, saving foreign trade companies up to 1.5 working days per week in customer search time.

    Last October, Alibaba International updated its “AI Business Assistant,” enabling real-time optimization of product titles, keywords, images and selling points to drive more online exposure for home-made products for overseas market.

    Veteran Chinese mechanics maker Xu Jingqian recalled a puzzling challenge with his screw compressors: strong website traffic in the United States but poor buyer inquiries on Alibaba.

    As an early adopter of Alibaba’s AI tool launched in 2023, he received targeted recommendations: Add U.S. specifications, showcase product certifications and clarify door-to-door delivery costs. After implementing these changes, Xu saw his sales more than double.

    “AI now auto-translates Chinese small enterprises’ product descriptions into export-ready visuals and listings, making global sales as easy as domestic ones,” said Fan Min, general manager of public affairs at Alibaba 1688, at a CISCE event.

    Open Source

    The introduction of these new products underscores China’s ongoing efforts to sustain the global trade system via digital tools despite increasing uncertainties. Empowered especially by AI technology, the thriving digital trade is emerging as a bright spot in global trade landscape.

    At the five-day expo, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praised China’s global leadership in AI models, engineering talent and industrial applications. “The supply chain of China is a miracle. It is the largest and most complex in the world, not just about labor, but built on deep technology, AI and software,” said Huang.

    In a dialogue event on Thursday, Huang said China is clever about open-source engineering. “Open source has many global implications. It’s not just helping the Chinese ecosystem; it’s helping ecosystems around the world.”

    China’s open-source AI models like DeepSeek, Kimi and Qwen are powering supply chains across China and the rest of the world. In February, the NetEase Foreign Trade Express fully integrated with DeepSeek.

    China’s digitally deliverable service import and export value in 2024 grew by nearly 40% compared to 2020, as shown by figures released by the country’s Ministry of Commerce.

    Last year, China’s digital economy core industries contributed about 10% of its GDP, while cross-border e-commerce exports grew by 16.9% year on year, according to China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, who organized the CISCE.

    An initiative launched at the expo calls for the digitalization and intelligent upgrading of supply chains, promoting interconnected data across the entire chain to create better conditions for international trade and investment cooperation.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Call for information – Structure fire – Braitling

    NT Police are calling for information following a suspicious structure fire in Braitling on Saturday evening.

    Around 6:45pm, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received multiple reports of a unit on fire at a residential complex on Elliot Street.

    Emergency services attended and NT Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the blaze, with a search of the premises confirming no one was inside at the time.

    Initial investigations indicate the fire is suspicious, with two mattresses, one on the ground floor and another on the top floor, identified as the points of ignition.

    A crime scene was declared, and investigations remain ongoing.

    Police urge anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or who may have CCTV or dash cam footage around the time of the incident, to make contact on 131 444. Please quote reference number NTP2500073181.

    £75 Million boost for hospices to transform end-of-life care

    £75 million to modernise facilities and deliver upgrades to hospices across England including specially adapted beds, rooms, and technology.

    Families will see further improvements in end-of-life care as the government releases £75 million for hospices to deliver major upgrades and enhancements to facilities including separate family rooms, solar panels to reduce energy costs and communal lounges.

    More than 170 hospices across England will receive a share of the funding – the largest cash injection ever – to ensure patients receive the highest quality end-of-life care in comfortable, dignified surroundings.

    It follows a £25 million boost in February, delivering the government’s £100 million investment confirmed in December. This is already supporting urgent building repairs and creating warmer, homely spaces.

    This cash marks a further step in the delivery of the government’s Plan for Change, improving care in the community where people need it most.

    Hospices include Wigan and Leigh – visited by Health Minister Stephen Kinnock this week – which used its funding to replace a flat roof which was leaking. It will use the additional funding to replace its heating system – helping create a better, more comfortable environment for patients and enabling staff to deliver higher quality care.

    Minister for Care Stephen Kinnock said: 

    Hospices play a vital role in our society by providing invaluable care and support when people need it most. 

    At this most difficult time, people deserve to receive the best care in the best possible environment with dignity.  

    I have seen first-hand how our funding is already making a real difference to improving facilities for patients and families. This additional funding will deliver further upgrades, relieving pressure on day-to-day spending.

    End-of-life care is crucial to our 10 Year Health Plan and our fundamental shift of moving more care out of hospital and into the community. We will continue to support hospices so they can deliver their vital work.

    Other improvements already made at hospices across the country include:

    • Major building works and modernised facilities

    • Digital transformation to improve data sharing between healthcare providers 

    • Development of outreach services to extend care beyond physical buildings 

    • Creation of more welcoming spaces for families, including outdoor areas 

    • Energy efficiency measures to improve sustainability 

    This includes Garden House Hospice Care in Stevenage which has refurbished its integrated procedures unit with eight new specially adapted beds and mattresses and created a separate room for patients’ close family members to spend the night when needed. The hospice has also equipped all its nurses with laptops with single logins to stop them carrying too much equipment when visiting patients.

    They now record their notes electronically and have become paperless – nurses can now spend less time on administration and more time focusing on what matters most – providing compassionate care to patients and support to their families.  

    The new cash injection is for the financial year 2025/26 and will be distributed by Hospice UK to hospices. Hospices have been allocated a pot of funding and will be able to proceed with upgrades, invoicing Hospice UK once work has been completed. 

    Toby Porter, CEO of Hospice UK, said: 

    The announcement in late 2024 of £100 million in capital funding for hospices was welcome recognition from the government of the immense pressure facing hospices, and their urgent need for more financial support. 

    We were pleased to distribute the first £25 million of this funding early in March. We know this money has made a huge difference to hospices and the next £75 million will continue to help them invest in their buildings, facilities, and digital infrastructure. 

    While this one-off investment has been very welcome, it’s critical that we continue to work with government to secure long-term reform to ensure hospice care is there for everyone who needs it, whoever and wherever they are. 

    The government has just emphasised the importance of hospices in their 10 Year Plan for the NHS and the role they can play in shifting care from hospitals into the community. With the right support, there is so much more they can do to realise the vision set out in the 10 Year Plan. We look forward to working with government to make this a reality.

    Billions of dollars worth of infrastructure projects getting underway in the next few months will drive economic activity and create thousands of jobs across the country, Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop say.

    The Ministers today released an infrastructure update showing $6 billion of government-funded construction is due to start between now and Christmas.

    “The projects getting underway include new roads, hospitals, schools, high-tech laboratories and other government buildings,” Nicola Willis says.

    “That means spades in the ground, jobs throughout the country and a stronger economy. 

     “Improving the quality of New Zealand’s infrastructure is critical to growing the economy and helping Kiwis with the cost of living. 

    “Good roads, schools and hospitals help business to move goods and services to market quickly and efficiently, children to learn and doctors and nurses to get patients back on their feet.”

    Chris Bishop says the projects getting underway will create thousands of employment opportunities for New Zealanders. 

    “Numbers vary according to the nature of projects, but data sourced from the Infrastructure Commission suggests each billion dollars of infrastructure investment per year equates to about 4500 jobs.

    “In total, workers are expected to start construction on $3.9 billion worth of roading projects in the next few months. They include the Ōtaki to north of Levin expressway, the Melling interchange, the Waihoehoe Road upgrade, and the new Ōmanawa bridge on SH29. All will help to lift productivity by getting people and freight to their destinations quickly and safely.

    “Health projects kicking off include upgrades to Auckland City Hospital, Middlemore Hospital, and the construction of a new acute mental health unit at Hutt Valley Hospital. Construction work on the new inpatients building at the new Dunedin Hospital has also just begun.

    “Between now and the end of this year, school property projects valued at nearly $800 million will get underway across the country.

    “Other Government infrastructure projects due to start before the end of this year include a massive new state-of-the-art biosecurity facility in Auckland for the Ministry of Primary Industries and the Papakura District Court interim courthouse.

     “Importantly, this is just the start. The National Infrastructure Pipeline, managed by the Infrastructure Commission, now shows planned future projects totalling $207 billion across central government, local government and the private sector.” 

    Alongside the infrastructure update, Nicola Willis today released an update on the Government’s Infrastructure for Growth work programme. The update is the first refresh of the Going for Growth agenda launched in February to drive economic growth by backing business, improving infrastructure and skills, and removing barriers to innovation.

    The update shows that since February the Government has delivered on 14 actions to build a stronger infrastructure pipeline and drive better value for money. They include: 

    • streamlining land acquisition processes for major infrastructure projects
    • agreeing to fund more than $550 million of water, energy, Māori development and other projects through the Regional Infrastructure Fund; and
    • consulting on a draft National Infrastructure Plan due to become final by the end of the year that will give investors and businesses confidence and drive better value for money from public investment.

    The classrooms at Anténor Firmin school in Hinche in central Haiti are no longer studiously quiet.

    Once a place of learning, it now echoes with the sounds of babies crying, water containers clanking, and voices murmuring through the night.

    Over 700 people displaced by violence are crammed into the crumbling compound, sleeping on floors where children once solved math problems.

    Among them is Edens Désir, a former teacher, who continues to believe that education should be the key to a more prosperous and peaceful future for this beleaguered Caribbean Island nation.

    A trained accountant and former secondary-school teacher, his life was upended by the violent clashes that erupted in March 2025 in Saut-d’Eau and Mirebalais, two small towns south of Hinche.

    Like 6,000 others, he fled massacres, rape, arson, and looting.

    “Everything I built, little by little, was destroyed,” he said. “I walked away with nothing.”

    Warring gangs have long controlled most of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, some 30 miles (48 km) away.

    It is only recently that their sphere of influence has moved to more the more rural areas of Centre department where, Hinche and Saut-d’Eau are located.

    Edens Désir, found refuge in the school where he once studied, a place now stripped of its purpose. Desks have become beds. Classrooms have turned into shelters. Families lie packed into rooms never meant to house them.

    Even in these crowded rooms, he found a way to start over. Not for himself, but for the children around him. With a whiteboard, a marker, and quiet determination, he has brought a sense of purpose to lives that have been thrown off course.

    “Ever since I was a kid, I loved teaching,” he explained. “It’s what matters most to me. I’d rather be in front of a class than sitting around doing nothing. For these kids, school is the only real chance they’ve got.”

    Living in limbo

    Once on the verge of expanding a small business, Mr. Désir now lives in limbo. “That plan is gone. Violence made sure of it. My only option now is to leave and try to start over somewhere else. But as long as I’m here, I will keep sharing what I know.”

    These days, he takes life one day at a time. “I can’t make plans anymore,” he said. “Each day, I just figure things out as they come. Each night, I wonder if there will be food tomorrow.”

    Clean water is scarce. Long queues stretch at distribution points, where women and children wait patiently, balancing heavy containers.

    Hygiene conditions are dire. With few latrines and showers available, hundreds are left without privacy or sanitation. The health risks are growing, especially for the most vulnerable.

    Food is just as uncertain. “There are nights I go to sleep without eating,” he says. “But I keep teaching because the kids are here.”

    IOM staff and a civil protection agent asses the needs of displaced people

    Delivering aid to the displaced is no easy task. The main road between Port-au-Prince and Hinche remains blocked by insecurity, cutting off supply routes and isolating entire communities.

    Despite the hurdles, the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reached over 800 families across 17 displacement sites, providing emergency items such as shelter kits, blankets, kitchen sets, and jerrycans.

    IOM teams continue working directly with displaced families, host communities, and local authorities to assess needs and provide relief.

    Site committees and civil protection teams are being trained to better manage the shelters. The most fragile sites are being relocated to safer areas and mental health support is offered to those affected by the violence.

    Protect the vulnerable

    These efforts aim to protect the most vulnerable, especially children, from a crisis they did not choose but are now forced to navigate.

    Edens Désir believes that knowledge is the best defence against dehumanization. When violence tears everything apart, forcing children into displacement, splitting families, and cutting off access to education, teaching becomes an act of resistance.

    Even when the days feel heavy, he keeps showing up for the children who still believe in him.

    “If we want things to change, we need people who grow into better citizens,” he said. “I don’t know if what I’m doing is enough to make that happen, but it gives me purpose. It breaks my heart to know that one day I’ll have to leave them behind and look for a better future.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: Man wanted in connection with sexual assault in Hammersmith

    Detectives are appealing for the public’s help to identify a man seen in CCTV footage, following a sexual assault in May.

    A woman in her 30s reported that a man sexually assaulted her in Hammersmith Grove, W6 at around 03:40hrs on Sunday, 18 May.

    She is currently being supported by specialist officers.

    On the morning of the assault, the victim was followed by a man as she walked along Hammersmith Grove, past Hammersmith Underground station. He caught up to her and sexually assaulted her before running off towards Hammersmith Broadway.

    After the victim reported the sexual assault, officers launched an immediate investigation.

    They tracked the man’s movements on CCTV before the offence – where he was seen walking along King Street, Hammersmith. Following the assault, he was seen running north on Park Road towards Browning Avenue before heading into a residential area.

    He is described as white, in his 20s and approximately 5ft 8in to 6ft tall. He has dark hair and was wearing a black North Face jacket, black trousers and white trainers.

    Detective Superintendent Lucy O’Connor, leading the Met’s investigation, said: “Women and girls should be safe to walk the streets of London without being attacked. That is why we need to identify a man in connection with this incident and are now asking the public to help.

    “If you were in the area on the morning of Sunday, 18 May or if you recognise the man in the footage, please contact us as soon as possible.”

  • MIL-Evening Report: Liberals easily win most seats at Tasmanian election, but Labor may form government

    With 63% of enrolled voters counted in today’s Tasmanian state election, The Poll Bludger is projecting that the final results will give the Liberals 39.7% of the statewide vote (up 3.0% since the March 2024 election), Labor just 25.7% (down 3.1%), the Greens 14.1% (up 0.2%), the Shooters 3.2% (up 0.9%), the Nationals 1.7% and independents 15.4%.

    Tasmania uses the proportional Hare-Clark system for its lower house elections. As described previously, the five seats Tasmania has at federal elections each return seven members for a total of 35 MPs. A quota for election is one-eighth of the vote, or 12.5%.

    The main Poll Bludger page gives projected quotas for each electorate for the Liberals, Labor and the Greens. The Liberals have just under four quotas in Braddon, over three in Bass and Lyons and over two in Clark and Franklin, suggesting 14 definite seats with more possible.

    Labor is just above or just below two quotas in all five seats, and should win ten seats. The Greens have 1.8 quotas in Clark, over one in each of Franklin, Bass and Lyons and 0.6 in Braddon, so they should win at least five seats.

    Of the independents, environmental campaigner Craig Garland has 0.8 quotas in Braddon and will be re-elected. Left-wing independent Kristie Johnston has 1.3 quotas in Clark, and will also be re-elected. In Franklin, both former Labor leader David O’Byrne and Teal Peter George (0.9 and 1.3 quotas respectively) have been elected.

    In Lyons, the Shooters candidate, with 0.6 quotas, is well positioned to win the final seat. In Bass, it appears more complex, but the final seat is likely to go to either the Liberals or the Shooters. None of the three former Jacqui Lambie Network MPs who won seats at the March 2024 election have been re-elected.

    Overall, the right-wing parties (Liberals and Shooters) are likely to win 16 of the 35 seats, but Labor, the Greens and left-wing independents are likely to win 19 seats. So even though the Liberals will win the most seats, Labor may be able to cobble together a government, but only if they cooperate with the Greens.

    This overall result assumes a 4–3 right split in Bass, Braddon and Lyons, but a 5–2 left split in both Clark and Franklin. In Franklin, the Liberals would be unlucky not to win three with 2.7 quotas, but Labor has 1.8 quotas and preferences from George should assist Labor.

    Many pre-poll votes have not yet been counted, and postals won’t be counted until next week. Postals are likely to assist the Liberals. The postal effect should be accounted for by The Poll Bludger’s projections.

    YouGov poll badly understated Liberals

    A late YouGov poll, conducted July 7–18 from a sample of 931, gave the Liberals 31% of the statewide vote (steady since June), Labor 30% (down four), the Greens 16% (up three), the Nationals 2%, the Shooters 1% and independents 20% (up two).

    A two-party vote is not applicable in Tasmania’s proportional system, but this poll gave Labor a 55–45 lead over the Liberals. Labor leader Dean Winter also led Liberal incumbent Jeremy Rockliff as better premier by 55–45. Rockliff was at -19 net approval and Winter at -13.

    The only other public Tasmanian polls were conducted by DemosAU. The final DemosAU poll, which I covered on Tuesday, gave the Liberals 34.9%, Labor 24.7%, the Greens 15.6%, the Nationals 2.7%, the Shooters 1.8% and independents 20.3%.

    The results show the Liberals headed for about a 14-point vote share win over Labor, so YouGov badly understated them.

    Federal Bradfield legal challenge

    Last Monday the Liberals challenged Teal Nicolette Boele’s 26-vote win in Bradfield at the May 3 federal election to the High Court, acting as the Court of Disputed Returns. Boele will be seated until the court resolves the case.

    The court can either confirm Boele’s win, void the election for this seat and order a byelection in Bradfield, or overturn the result and declare the Liberal candidate elected.

    After the official declaration of the election on June 12, the 40-day period for legal challenges to the results expires on Tuesday. Tuesday will also be the first sitting of federal parliament since the election, though it could have sat at any time after June 12.

    The Bradfield challenge will delay a Labor vs Liberal two-party count in that seat until the challenge is resolved. It’s likely the Australian Electoral Commission’s (AEC) current estimate in Bradfield is understating Labor, and therefore Labor is being very slightly understated nationally.

    DemosAU polls on democracy in Australia and Queensland federal

    DemosAU has emailed me a poll on democracy and voting systems in Australia. This poll was conducted in two waves in May and June from a total sample of 1,713.

    By 69–12, respondents thought Australian democracy is something to be proud of, and by 71–19 they did not think Australia needs a PM like Donald Trump. By 67–15, respondents trusted the AEC. By 53–23, they did not want the number of MPs increased.

    Asked for preferred voting system in the House of Representatives, 36% selected compulsory preferential voting (CPV), 27% first past the post (FPTP), 25% optional preferential voting (OPV) and 12% proportional representation (PR).

  • MIL-Evening Report: Palestine solidarity rally greeted by Rainbow Warrior Gaza protest

    Palestinian supporters and protesters against the 21 months of Israeli genocide in Gaza marched after a rally in downtown Auckland today across the Viaduct to the Greenpeace environmental flagship Rainbow Warrior — and met a display of solidarity.

    Several people on board the campaign ship, which has been holding open days over last weekend and this weekend, held up Palestinian flags and displayed a large banner declaring “Sanction Israel — Stop the genocide”.

    About 300 people were in the vibrant rally and Greenpeace Aotearoa oceans campaigner Juan Parada came out on Halsey Wharf to speak to the protesters in solidarity over Gaza.

    “Greenpeace stands for peace and justice, and environmental justice, not only for the environmental damage, but for the lives of the people,” said Parada, a former media practitioner.

    Global environmental campaigners have stepped up their condemnation of the devastation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories as well as the protests over the genocide, which has so far killed almost 59,000 people, most of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Department, although some researchers say the actual death toll is far higher.

    Gaza war emissions condemned
    New research recently revealed that the carbon footprint of the first 15 months of Israel’s war on Gaza would be greater than the annual planet-warming emissions of 100 individual countries, worsening the global climate emergency on top of the huge civilian death toll.

    The report cited by The Guardian indicated that Israel’s relentless bombardment, blockade and refusal to comply with international court rulings had “underscored the asymmetry of each side’s war machine, as well as almost unconditional military, energy and diplomatic support Israel enjoys from allies, including the US and UK”.

    The Israeli war machine has been primarily blamed.

    The report, titled “War on the Climate: A Multitemporal Study of Greenhouse Gas Emissions of the Israel-Gaza Conflict” and published by the Social Science Research Network, is part of a growing movement to hold states and businesses accountable for the climate and environmental costs of war and occupation.

    Greenpeace open letter
    Greenpeace Aotearoa recently came out with strong statements about the genocidal war on Gaza with executive director Russel Norman earlier this month writing an open letter to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Minister Winston Peters, expressing his grave concerns about the “ongoing genocide in Gaza being carried out by Israeli forces” — and the ongoing failure of the New Zealand Government to impose meaningful sanctions on Israel.

    He referred to the mounting death toll of starving Palestinians being deliberately shot at the notorious Israeli-US backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) food distribution sites.

    Norman also cited an Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz report that Israeli soldiers had been ordered to deliberately shoot unarmed Palestinians seeking aid, quoting one Israeli soldier saying: “It’s a killing field.”

    Today’s rally featured many Palestinians wearing thobe costumes in advance of Palestinian Traditional Dress Day on July 25.

    This is a day to showcase and celebrate the rich Palestinian cultural heritage through traditional clothing that is intricately embroidered.
