MIL-OSI Security: New Orleans Resident Sentenced to 10 Years in Federal Prison for Possession and Receipt of Online Child Sexual Abuse Material

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced today that STEPHEN BADON (“BADON ”), age 35, of New Orleans, was sentenced on May 13, 2025, to 120 months imprisonment, followed by 25 years of supervised release, by U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey, after previously pleading guilty to receipt of child pornography, and distribution of child pornography, both in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 2252(a)(2) and (b)(1). Additionally, BADON was ordered to pay $86,500 in restitution to numerous victims, as well as a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

According to court documents, the case against BADON stemmed from an online Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). On August 2, 2023, FBI special agents executed a federal search warrant at BADON’s New Orleans home. FBI agents seized four electronic devices from BADON’s residence and subsequently located over 88,000 files of CSAM material throughout the four devices. BADON was subsequently arrested by the FBI.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stuart Theriot of the Narcotics Unit.

SUMMARY…A few rapidly developing and intensifying supercells
appear possible as early as 1-3 PM CDT, accompanied by a risk for
large to giant hail and a strong tornado or two.

DISCUSSION…Convergence along the dryline appears at least
initially weak, and it is not clear how much this will change as it
gradually mixes eastward toward the Interstate 35 corridor through
18-20Z. However, deepening convection is evident to the south and
southeast of Chickasha OK, which appears rooted within a corridor of
stronger warm advection around the 850 mb level.

It appears that this may persist and perhaps develop northward into
early/mid afternoon, along the western periphery of a 30-40 kt
southerly 850 mb jet. At the same time, it appears that at least
modest mid-level height falls will begin to overspread the I-35
corridor, coincident with continuing insolation and warming of a
seasonably moist boundary layer. A corridor along and east of the
dryline is forecast to become characterized by large CAPE on the
order of 2000-4000+ J/kg.

As the initially elevated convection begins to acquire increasing
updraft inflow emanating from the unstable boundary-layer, and
inhibition weakens, rapid thunderstorm intensification appears
possible. In the presence of west-southwesterly deep-layer shear,
this probably will include at least a couple of evolving supercells
with potential to produce large to giant hail, along with a risk for
a strong tornado.

MIL-OSI Security: Latham Sex Offender Indicted for Attempted Coercion and Enticement of a Minor

ALBANY, NEW YORK – Nathaniel Drescher, age 41, of Latham, New York, was arraigned last Thursday on an indictment charging him with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor and the commission of a felony offense against a minor by a registered sex offender. Drescher was ordered detained pending trial.

United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), made the announcement.

According to the indictment, Drescher knowingly attempted to persuade, induce, and entice a child whom he believed to be 11 years old to engage in sexual activity. This conduct follows Drescher’s 2012 convictions in Johnson County, Texas, for online solicitation of a minor. The charges in the indictment are merely accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

United States Attorney Sarcone stated: “This conduct, as alleged, was especially egregious because the defendant had committed a similar offense before in Texas. With our state and federal law enforcement partners, we will continue to ensure that sex offenders are prosecuted to the fullest extent to the law when they commit new crimes.”

FBI Special Agent in Charge Tremaroli stated: “This indictment proves crimes against our most vulnerable will be met with swift and decisive action. The FBI, together with our law enforcement partners, is committed to protecting children and bringing predators like Mr. Drescher to justice.”

If convicted on all counts, Drescher faces at least 20 years and up to life in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life. A defendant’s sentence is imposed by a judge based on the particular statutes the defendant is charged with violating, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors. In addition, Drescher would have to continue to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.

The FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force is investigating the case, with assistance from the New York State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Allen J. Vickey is prosecuting the case as Part of Project Safe Childhood.

MIL-OSI Security: Repeat Sex Offender Sentenced to 12 Years in Federal Prison for Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material

CONCORD – A Dunbarton man was sentenced in federal court for possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), Acting U.S. Attorney Jay McCormack announces.

Scott Currier, age 48, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Samantha Elliott to 144 months in federal prison and 10 years of supervised release. Currier was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $38,000. In May 2024, Currier pleaded guilty to one count of possession of CSAM.

“The defendant is a convicted sex offender who repeatedly exploited children,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Jay McCormack. “Thanks to the vigilant efforts and critical leads from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, law enforcement was able to identify the defendant and swiftly investigate his conduct. This office will relentlessly pursue and hold predators accountable, and we will use every tool at our disposal to protect children from exploitation and revictimization.”

“Currier’s criminal history of aggravated felonious sexual assault makes his possession of hundreds of images of child sexual abuse material all the more troubling. Friday’s significant sentence takes a repeat sex offender off the streets and puts him into federal prison for over a decade while also offering restitution to identified victims of child sexual exploitation found in the materials he possessed,” said Special Agent in Charge Michael J. Krol for Homeland Security Investigations New England.

The defendant was identified through a CyberTip reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children based on internet activity that was traced to his residence. Based on that tip, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the defendant’s home that resulted in the seizure of a computer that was found to contain over 700 files of suspected CSAM. The defendant faced enhanced penalties in this matter due to a prior state conviction for aggravated felonious sexual assault.

Homeland Security Investigations led the investigation. Valuable assistance was provided by the Dunbarton Police Department and the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kasey Weiland is prosecuting the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. The Offeror intends to issue the New Notes. Part of the proceeds from the New Notes will be used for purchasing the Notes. The rationale of the Offer is thus to proactively manage upcoming debt repayments and to extend the average debt maturity profile of the Offeror.

Purchase Price and Accrued Interest

The Offeror will pay for any Notes validly tendered and accepted for purchase by the Offeror pursuant to the Offer a purchase price to be determined in the manner described in the Tender Offer Memorandum by reference to a yield which is equal to the sum of the fixed spread of -15 basis points (the “Fixed Spread Amount“) and the 1 Year Euro Mid-Swap Rate at or around the Pricing Time, expressed as a percentage and rounded to the third decimal place (with 0.0005 being rounded upwards) (the “Purchase Price“). Specifically, the Purchase Price will equal (a) the value of all remaining payment of principal and interest on the Notes, up to and including the scheduled maturity date of the Notes, discounted to the Tender Offer Settlement Date at a discount rate equal to the yield, minus (b) the Accrued Interest.

The Offeror will also pay, on the Tender Offer Settlement Date, Accrued Interest in respect of any Notes accepted for purchase pursuant to the Offer.

New Financing Condition

On 19 May 2025, the Offeror announced that it intends to issue euro-denominated fixed-rate notes (the “New Notes“) under its U.S.$5,000,000,000 Euro Medium Term Note Programme (the “Programme“).

The Offeror is not under any obligation to accept for purchase any Notes tendered pursuant to the Offer. The acceptance for purchase by the Offeror of Notes tendered pursuant to the Offer is at the sole discretion of the Offeror and tenders may be rejected by the Offeror for any reason. The purchase of any Notes by the Offeror pursuant to the Offer is also subject, without limitation, to (i) the pricing of the issue of the New Notes, (ii) the signing by the Offeror and the relevant managers of a subscription agreement in respect of the subscription for the New Notes and (iii) such subscription agreement remaining in full force and effect as at the Tender Offer Settlement Date (the “New Financing Condition“).

The Offeror reserves the right at any time to waive any or all of the conditions of the Offer (including the New Financing Condition) as set out in the Tender Offer Memorandum.

Priority in Allocation of New Notes

A Noteholder that wishes to subscribe for New Notes in addition to tendering Notes for purchase pursuant to the Offer will receive priority (the “New Notes Priority“) in the allocation of the New Notes, subject to the completion of the Offer, the issue of the New Notes and such Noteholder making a separate application for the purchase of such New Notes to one of the Dealer Managers (in its capacity as a Joint Lead Manager (as defined herein) of the issue of the New Notes) in accordance with the standard new issue procedures of such Joint Lead Manager.

A key factor in the allocation of the New Notes will be whether Noteholders have indicated they have validly tendered or indicated their firm intention to the Offeror or the Dealer Managers to tender their Notes. When considering allocation of the New Notes, the Offeror intends to give preference to those Noteholders who, prior to such allocation, have validly tendered or indicated their firm intention to the Offeror or any of the Dealer Managers to tender the Notes and subscribe for New Notes. However, the Offeror is not obliged to allocate the New Notes to a Noteholder who has validly tendered or indicated a firm intention to tender the Notes pursuant to the Offer and any amount allocated may be more, equal to, or less than the aggregate principal amount of Notes validly tendered or in respect of which a firm intention to tender has been indicated by such Noteholder. Any allocation of the New Notes, while being considered by the Offeror as set out above, will be made in accordance with customary new issue allocation processes and procedures.

The aggregate principal amount of New Notes, if any, for which priority will be given to any Noteholder will be subject to the sole and absolute discretion of the Offeror and may be less than, equal to or greater than the aggregate principal amount of Notes validly tendered by such Noteholder in the Offer and accepted for purchase by the Offeror.

Noteholders should note that the pricing and allocation of the New Notes are expected to take place prior to the Expiration Deadline for the Offer and any Noteholder that wishes to subscribe for New Notes in addition to tendering existing Notes for purchase pursuant to the Offer should therefore provide, as soon as practicable, to any Dealer Manager any indications of a firm intention to tender Notes for purchase pursuant to the Offer and the quantum of Notes that it intends to tender in order for this to be taken into account as part of the New Notes allocation process.

If any Noteholder wishes to subscribe for New Notes in addition to its New Notes Priority it must make a separate application to subscribe for such additional New Notes to a Joint Lead Manager in accordance with the standard new issue procedures of such Joint Lead Manager.

Acceptance and no scaling

If the Offeror decides to accept valid tenders of Notes pursuant to the Offer, the Offeror will (subject to satisfaction (or waiver) of the New Financing Condition on or prior to the Tender Offer Settlement Date) accept for purchase all of the Notes that are validly tendered in full, with no pro rata scaling.

Tender Instruction

In order to participate in the Offer, Noteholders must validly tender their Notes for purchase by delivering, or arranging to have delivered on their behalf, a valid Tender Instruction that is received by the Tender Agent by 5.00 p.m. (CEST) on 23 May 2025 (the “Expiration Deadline“).

Tender Instructions will be irrevocable except in the limited circumstances described in the Tender Offer Memorandum.

Tender Instructions must be submitted in respect of a minimum nominal amount of no less than €100,000, being the minimum denomination of the Notes, and may be submitted in integral multiples of €1,000 thereafter. In addition, the New Notes Priority requested must be for an amount which is at least €100,000 in aggregate nominal amount of the New Notes for the relevant Noteholder to be eligible to receive priority in the allocation of the New Notes.

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 291 continues.

SUMMARY…A tornado threat will continue across parts of
south-central Kansas over the next couple of hours. A strong tornado
will be likely, and an EF3+ tornado could occur.

DISCUSSION…An intense tornadic supercell is ongoing about 50
statute miles to the west-northwest of Wichita, KS. This storm is
located just to the east of an axis of moderate instability, where
the RAP is analyzing MLCAPE in the 3000 to 4000 J/kg range. This
supercell is also located just to the southwest of the center of a
50 to 60 knot low-level jet. The low-level jet is creating very
strong low-level shear, which is being sampled by the WSR-88D VWP at
Wichita. This is creating a long looped hodograph and 0-3 km
storm-relative helicity of near 650 m2/s2. This environment will be
favorable for tornadoes, and a EF3+ tornado will be possible. In
addition to the tornado threat, forecast soundings have 700-500 mb
lapse rates near 8 C/km, which will be favorable for large hail.
Hailstones of greater than 2 inches in diameter may also accompany
the more intense cores.

JINAN, May 19 (Xinhua) — Ten years ago, Ahmed Moussa, a trader from Algeria, started buying tires in a region of China known as Guangrao, a county with a population of only about half a million people in eastern China’s Shandong Province.

“You will find quality tires at competitive prices here,” Musa said at the 15th China /Guangzhou/ International Rubber Tire & Auto Accessories Exhibition, which ended on May 17. The event attracted more than 50 of the world’s leading tire companies, including those from the Fortune 500 list. Moreover, all 10 of the world’s largest tire makers were present at the exhibition.

A. Musa’s company, Sarl Famo Pneumatique, sold about 300,000 tires from Guangzhao in 2024 and plans to increase orders.

In the mid-1990s, the eastern Chinese county, located near China’s second-largest oil field, Shengli, had already become the country’s largest rubber hose production base. However, as the market became saturated with such products, some local manufacturers switched to producing automobile tires.

With an annual output of 177 million radial tires, 86.6 percent of which are exported, Guangrao is home to China’s largest rubber tire industrial cluster, said Sun Xiaohua, head of the local bureau of industry and information technology. The county’s export revenue of 25.95 billion yuan (about $3.6 billion) in 2024 underscores its dominant position.

“Here you can find almost all the most modern tires at prices 30-40 percent lower than world prices,” said a Russian buyer named Ivanov, emphasizing that this is a breakthrough offer in terms of cost.

At the Shandong Huasheng Rubber Group booth, engineers demonstrated self-sealing tires using polymer composites and specially designed sound-absorbing foam inserts – technologies previously monopolized by premium brands. Liu Kaihua, a representative of the company, explained that many Chinese manufacturers can now achieve comparable or even better results through independent research and development.

The buyers who came from all over the world took note of this significant breakthrough. “Tires from Guangrao have reached new heights in terms of quality and performance. Although many premium tires here now retail for over 1,000 yuan, the price-quality ratio is still very high,” Musa said.

Behind Guangrao County’s success is the drive for innovation by local enterprises and the accelerating pace of smart transformation in China’s tire industry, supported by government initiatives.

In 2015, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology included the country’s tire industry in a smart manufacturing pilot program to promote intelligent transformation through policy guidance, standard setting, and financial support. Guidelines for 2024 included upgrading outdated tire manufacturing equipment, and by 2027, the document aims to achieve a level of digital transformation where the productivity of key CNC processes reaches more than 85 percent.

Guangrao-based Shandong Yongsheng Rubber Group Co., Ltd. has completed an intelligent upgrade of its radial tire production line, replacing 182 key machines/sets and installing automated logistics systems, resulting in a significant improvement in production efficiency. According to Hao Yufeng, who is in charge of smart manufacturing at the company, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled equipment and automated guided vehicles have reduced labor requirements. He noted that 95 percent of the key equipment is controlled by digital technology.

The tire boom in Guangrao shows no signs of slowing down. The county is doubling down on expansion and innovation to maintain its lead. This year, the county government plans to invest 9.31 billion yuan in 14 key projects, increasing annual radial tire output to more than 260 million units.

The boom underscores China’s dominance in the tire industry. In 2024, China exported rubber tires worth more than $20 billion, accounting for 35 percent of the global total. That figure makes the country the world’s leading tire manufacturer and exporter.

China will further push innovation in next-generation telecommunication and digital infrastructure, such as 6G wireless technology, as part of its broader efforts to nurture new quality productive forces and build a modern industrial system, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Zhang Yunming, vice-minister of industry and information technology, said that more efforts are needed to prioritize comprehensive innovation, accelerate 5G-Advanced — a crucial upgrade to the 5G network in terms of functionality and coverage — and 6G technology development, and foster industrial and application advancements to empower the modernization of China’s industrial infrastructure.

Zhang made the remarks on Saturday at a conference held in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, to celebrate the 160th anniversary of what is now known as the International Telecommunication Union.

“China has built the world’s most advanced and largest-scale information and communication network, with 5G applications integrated into 86 out of 97 major categories of the national economy,” he said.

The industrial internet now covers all 41 industrial categories, accelerating the deployment of artificial intelligence, low-altitude economy initiatives, and the deep integration of the real economy with the digital economy, Zhang said.

By advancing cross-regional digital infrastructure, expanding industrial internet adoption in industrial parks and manufacturing clusters, and fostering international partnerships in standards and policy, China aims to build a resilient, intelligent and sustainable digital economy and better meet the needs of economic transformation, he added.

Computing power

On Saturday, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom and the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology jointly initiated the construction of a trial network for the computing power internet.

The computing power internet is the next-generation infrastructure designed to interconnect scattered computing power resources, including AI computing power and supercomputing power, said Wang Zhiqin, vice-president of the CAICT.

This initiative seeks to enable seamless “discovery, allocation and utilization” of computing power nationwide, supporting applications ranging from AI-generated content and autonomous driving to smart factories, she said.

The CAICT has teamed up with over 30 industry, academic and research partners to develop the computing power internet’s architecture. To date, 499 computing resource pools from 131 enterprises have been cataloged, aggregating 111.3 EFLOPS of computing power, Wang said.

EFLOPS is a unit of the speed of computer systems. It equals 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second. China’s total computing power reached 280 EFLOPS by the end of 2024, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Li Wei, deputy head of the CAICT’s cloud computing and big data research institute, said that traditionally, if companies want to use computing power, they either build the infrastructure themselves or rent the computing power via cloud subscriptions, which is expensive. But now with the computing power internet, they can easily find and use in a more efficient way computing power resources that are scattered across China.

For instance, a Beijing-based healthcare company needed midscale AI computing power, which traditionally requires purchasing two computer servers costing over 2 million yuan ($277,400). Through the trial network, the company in Beijing utilized idle servers in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, completing the task in one day at a reduced cost of around 10,000 yuan, Li said.

Wu Hequan, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that every yuan invested in computing power drives 3 to 4 yuan in GDP growth.

“In the global race for AI leadership, expanding computing power supply is critical,” Wu added.

Artificial intelligence (AI) might not have been created to enable new forms of sexual violence such as deepfake pornography. But that has been an unfortunate byproduct of the rapidly advancing technology.

This is just one example of AI’s many unintended uses.

AI’s intended uses are not without their own problems, including serious copyright concerns. But beyond this, there is much experimentation happening with the rapidly advancing technology. Models and code are shared, repurposed and remixed in public online spaces.

These collaborative, loosely networked communities — what we call “underspheres” in our recently published paper in New Media & Society — are where users experiment with AI rather than simply consume it. These spaces are where generative AI is pushed into unpredictable and experimental directions. And they show why a new approach to regulating AI and mitigating its risks is urgently needed. Climate policy offers some useful lessons.

A limited approach

As AI advances, so do concerns about risk. Policymakers have responded quickly. For example, the European Union AI Act which came into force in 2024 classifies systems by risk: banning “unacceptable” ones, regulating “high-risk” uses, and requiring transparency for lower-risk tools.

Other governments — including those of the United Kingdom, United States and China — are taking similar directions. However, their regulatory approaches differ in scope, stage of development, and enforcement.

But these efforts share a limitation: they’re built around intended use, not the messy, creative and often unintended ways AI is actually being used — especially in fringe spaces.

So, what risks can emerge from creative deviance in AI? And can risk-based frameworks handle technologies that are fluid, remixable and fast-moving?

Experimentation outside of regulation

There are several online spaces where members of the undersphere gather. They include GitHub (a web-based platform for collaborative software development), Hugging Face (a platform that offers ready-to-use machine learning models, datasets, and tools for developers to easily build and launch AI apps) and subreddits (individual communities or forums within the larger Reddit platform).

These environments encourage creative experimentation with generative AI outside regulated frameworks. This experimentation can include instructing models to avoid intended behaviours – or do the opposite. It can also include creating mashups or more powerful variations of generative AI by remixing software code that is made publicly available for anyone to view, use, modify and distribute.

The potential harms of this experimentation are highlighted by the proliferation of deepfake pornography. So too are the limits of the current approach to regulation rapidly advancing technology such as AI.

Deepfake technology wasn’t originally developed to create non-consensual pornographic videos and images. But this is ultimately what happened within subreddit communities, beginning in 2017. Deepfake pornography then quickly spread from this undersphere into the mainstream; a recent analysis of more than 95,000 deepfake videos online found 98% of them were deep fake pornography videos.

It was not until 2019 – years after deepfake pornography first emerged – that attempts to regulate it began to emerge globally. But these attempts were too rigid to capture the new ways deepfake technology was being used by then to cause harm. What’s more, the regulatory efforts were sporadic and inconsistent between states. This impeded efforts to protect people – and democracies – from the impacts of deepfakes globally.

This is why we need regulation that can march in step with emerging technologies and act quickly when unintended use prevails.

Embracing uncertainty, complexity and change

A way to look at AI governance is through the prism of climate change. Climate change is also the result of many interconnected systems interacting in ways we can’t fully control — and its impacts can only be understood with a degree of uncertainty.

Over the past three decades, climate governance frameworks have evolved to confront this challenge: to manage complex, emerging, and often unpredictable risks. And although this framework has yet to demonstrate its ability to meaningfully reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it has succeeded in sustaining global attention over the years on emerging climate risks and their complex impacts.

At the same time it has provided a forum where responsibilities and potential solutions can be publicly debated.

A similar governance framework should also be adopted to manage the spread of AI. This framework should consider the interconnected risks caused by generative AI tools linking with social media platforms. It should also consider cascading risks, as content and code are reused and adapted. And it should consider systemic risks, such as declining public trust or polarised debate.

Importantly, this framework must also involve diverse voices. Like climate change, generative AI won’t affect just one part of society — it will ripple through many. And the challenge is how to adapt with it.

Applied to AI, climate change governance approaches could help promote preemptive action in the wake of unforeseen use (such as in the case of deepfake porn) before the issue becomes widespread.

Avoiding the pitfalls of climate governance

While climate governance offers a useful model for adaptive, flexible regulation, it also brings important warnings that must be avoided.

Climate politics has been mired by loopholes, competing interests and sluggish policymaking. From Australia’s shortcomings in implementing its renewable strategy, to policy reversals in Scotland and political gridlock in the United States, climate policy implementation has often been the proverbial wrench in the gears of environmental law.

But, when it comes to AI governance, this all-too-familiar climate stalemate brings with it important lessons for the realm of AI governance.

First, we need to find ways to align public oversight with self-regulation and transparency on the part of AI developers and suppliers.

Second, we need to think about generative AI risks at a global scale. International cooperation and coordination are essential.

Finally, we need to accept that AI development and experimentation will persist, and craft regulations that respond to this in order to keep our societies safe.

A relatively benign severe weather pattern is expected from
Thursday/Day 6 into next weekend as a cold front pushes into the
Gulf. A few storms are possible along the cold front as it moves
south along the Florida Peninsula on Thursday. Otherwise, more
robust moisture recovery will begin Thursday night. Overall,
moisture quality will be low initially, but eventually some threat
may develop across the Plains as low-level moisture advection
continues.

SUMMARY…Severe thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage
and move east across the watch area through mid morning. Damaging
wind gusts and isolated large hail will be the primary severe
threats, and a tornado or two will also be possible.

The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 80
statute miles east and west of a line from 30 miles north northwest
of South Hill VA to 40 miles west southwest of Charlotte NC. For a

This World Telecommunication and Information Society Day marks the 160th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union.

From the telegraph to radio, from the Internet to Artificial Intelligence, technology has transformed how we live, work, and connect. But its benefits remain deeply unequal. This year’s focus on gender equality in digital transformation is both timely and urgent.

Around the world, algorithmic bias is reinforcing old prejudices. Online harassment and abuse silences women’s voices and drives them offline. And women and girls remain severely underrepresented in the very fields shaping our future: science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

This injustice harms us all. We cannot accept a digital future that leaves half of humanity behind. We must urgently invest in digital skills for all; harness the potential of technology to improve women’s lives; dismantle barriers blocking their full participation and leadership in the technology sector; and keep working to eradicate gender-based violence in all its forms – online and offline.

The Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact offer a path to bridge all digital divides and strengthen collaboration for women’s rights online. Let’s take that path together and help ensure digital transformation is a force for progress, inclusion, and equality.
