President John Dramani Mahama, on Saturday, joined President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the people of Liberia to celebrate their 178th Independence Day celebration in Monrovia.
The event held at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion in Monrovia, Montserrado County, was attended by heads of states from the subregion including the Presidents of Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Guinea Bissau. There were also representatives of the governments of Cote D’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Gambia.
Liberia used the occasion to recognise ECOWAS member states that contributed troops to the multinational peacekeeping force, ECOMOG, which played a key role in ending the civil war as well as securing humanitarian corridors during the Liberian war.
President Mahama received Ghana’s honour from the Liberian President on behalf of the Ghana Armed Forces and the people of Ghana for the contribution of its gallant soldiers.
President Boakai in a spirit of national reconciliation said Liberia must heal itself, unite for a common purpose and inspire all for a faster development of the country.
He called on all his citizens to leverage on technology to transform Liberia.
The celebration as on the theme “One people, one destiny, healing the past and building the future the ceremony reflected on the past, need for stock taking, reconciliation, a united national identity to rebuild a peaceful Liberia, endowed with rich natural resources”.
The President was accompanied by the Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt. General William Agyapong and Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, Stanislav Xoese Dogbe.

Sanctioning Senior Members of Longstanding Hizballah Financial Institution Al-Qard Al-Hassan (AQAH)

Today, the United States sanctioned seven senior officials and one entity linked to Al-Qard Al-Hassan (AQAH), a Hizballah-controlled financial institution. These officials, through their management roles, have facilitated Hizballah’s evasion of sanctions, enabling AQAH to conduct millions of dollars in transactions through “shadow” accounts.
In addition, the Department’s Rewards for Justice (RFJ) program is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the disruption of Hizballah financial mechanisms. Individuals with useful information should contact RFJ via Signal, Telegram, or WhatsApp at +1-202-702-7843. They could be eligible for a reward and relocation.

Sanctioning a Houthi Petroleum and Financial Network

The United States is today sanctioning two individuals and five entities that have imported refined petroleum products and circumvented sanctions in support of the Houthis. These actors have generated millions in personal gains while bolstering the Iran-backed Houthis’ ability to threaten shipping lanes vital to international commerce.
The United States is committed to disrupting the Houthis’ illicit revenue generation by maintaining pressure on the financial facilitators that fuel the Houthi enterprise. Today’s action builds on a series of measures targeting Houthi revenue generation and weapons procurement, reaffirming our resolve to counter terrorism, promote regional security, and uphold freedom of navigation.
On March 4, 2025, the Department of State announced the re-designation of Ansarallah as a Foreign Terrorist Organizationpursuant to section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended. The Gaza Government Media Office has condemned “in the strongest terms” Israel’s storming of the Handala aid ship, calling it an act of “maritime piracy”, reports Al Jazeera.
“This blatant aggression represents a flagrant violation of international law and maritime navigation rules,” the office said in a statement.
“It reaffirms once again that the [illegal Israeli] occupation acts as a thuggish force outside the law, targeting every humanitarian initiative seeking to rescue more than 2.4 million besieged and starving Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.”
The office also called on the international community, including the United Nations and rights groups, “to take an urgent and firm stance against this aggression and to work to secure international protection for the convoys”.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement today that the Israeli navy had intercepted the Gaza-bound Handala, and it was now heading towards Israel.
“The Israeli navy has stopped the vessel Navarn from illegally entering the maritime zone of the coast of Gaza,” said the statement, using the aid ship’s original name.
“The vessel is safely making its way to the shores of Israel,” it added. “All passengers are safe.”
Freedom Flotilla slams ‘abductions’ A statement by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition accused Israel military of “abducting” the 21 crew members of the Handala, saying the ship had been “violently intercepted by the Israeli military in international waters about 40 nautical miles from Gaza.
“At 23:43 EEST Palestine time, the Occupation cut the cameras on board Handala and we have lost all communication with our ship.
“The unarmed boat was carrying life-saving supplies when it was boarded by Israeli forces, its passengers abducted, and its cargo seized.
“The interception occurred in international waters outside Palestinian territorial waters off Gaza, in violation of international maritime law.”
The Handala carried a shipment of critical humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza, including baby formula, diapers, food, and medicine, the statement said.
“All cargo was non-military, civilian, and intended for direct distribution to a population facing deliberate starvation and medical collapse under Israel’s illegal blockade.”
The Handala carried 21 civilians representing 12 countries, including parliamentarians, lawyers, journalists, labour organisers, environmentalists, and other human rights defenders.

The attack on Handala is the third violent act by Israeli forces against Freedom Flotilla missions this year alone, said the statement.
“It follows the drone bombing of the civilian aid ship Conscience in European waters in May, which injured four people and disabled the vessel, and the illegal seizure of the Madleen in June, where Israeli forces abducted 12 civilians, including a Member of the European Parliament.
“Shortly before their abduction, the Handala‘s crew affirmed that they would be hunger-striking if detained by Israeli forces and not accepting any food from the Israeli Occupation Forces.”
Israeli officials have ignored the International Court of Justice’s binding orders that require the facilitation of humanitarian access to Gaza.
The continued attacks on peaceful civilian missions represent a grave violation of international law, said the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.
“Kia Ora Gaza is a longtime member of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition and supports the current Handala civil mission to break Israel’s illegal siege of Gaza and end Israel’s campaign to wipe out the Palestinian population.

Gaza/Jerusalem, July 27 (Xinhua) — Humanitarian aid was dropped again over various areas in the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday evening, Palestinian sources and eyewitnesses reported.
Several boxes of flour, sugar and canned goods were dropped by parachute in northern Gaza.
One of the aid packages fell on a tent housing displaced people in northern Gaza, leaving several people with minor injuries, witnesses said.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that airdrops of humanitarian aid to Gaza would resume.
According to the statement, seven pallets of humanitarian aid provided by international organizations will be airlifted. Special humanitarian corridors are planned to ensure the safe passage of UN convoys in Gaza.
In turn, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said it had decided to immediately resume airlifts of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
In a post on social media platform X, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said the UAE would continue to provide aid “by land, air and sea” to meet the urgent needs of the hardest-hit people in Gaza.

TEHRAN, July 26 (Xinhua) — At least eight people (five civilians and three attackers) were killed and 13 others were wounded in a “terrorist” attack on the Justice Department building in Zahedan, capital of Sistan and Baluchestan Province in southeastern Iran, on Saturday morning, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.
The group Jaysh al-Zulm, recognized as terrorist in Iran, claimed responsibility for the attack, the report said.
According to the report, after entering the Justice Department building, the “terrorists” opened fire on people inside. The death toll could rise, it added.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement published on its official Sepah News website that its ground forces had managed to kill three “terrorists.”
Provincial authorities have urged people to stay away from the Justice Department and surrounding areas.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to give Africa not less than two Permanent Seats with veto power as well as two Non-Permanent Seats in the United Nations Security Council. The call was made during the 6th Summit of the Committee of Ten African Union Heads of State and Government on the Reform of the United Nations Security Council (C-10) held virtually on Friday 25th July 2025. President Museveni called on the United Nations to consider the African proposals for fair representation to rectify the historical injustice against Africa which was perpetrated by the exploitative colonial powers. He noted that at the time the United Nations was founded in 1945, Africa had only four (4) Independent States (Ethiopia, Liberia, Egypt and the Union of South Africa) and only these were invited to the San Francisco Conference at which the UN Charter and the Statute of the ICJ were adopted. Currently, Africa has 54 independent States, which forms almost 28% of the UN membership. It is therefore imperative to reform the UNSC to reflect the current realities.
The President urged members of the C-10 and the African Union in general to step up building the “Africa We Want” in accordance with the vision of the African Union, united, cohesive and speaking with one voice in all aspects of the UNSC reforms.

JERUSALEM, July 26 (Xinhua) — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it successfully intercepted a rocket fired from Yemen toward Israel on Friday evening.
There were no reports of hits or casualties, Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service reported.
Sirens sounded in several locations in southeastern Israel, including the Dead Sea area and the Judean Desert city of Arad, after the IDF detected a launch from Yemeni territory.
The latest missile launch by Yemen’s Houthis took place on Tuesday and was also intercepted.
The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have been launching ballistic missiles and drones toward Israel since November 2023 in solidarity with the Palestinians and to pressure Israel to end the war and blockade of Gaza. –0–

President Xi Jinping, who received the credentials of 16 new ambassadors to China on Friday, welcomed the envoys to their new posts in Beijing and sent a clear signal that China will resolutely expand its high-level opening-up.
During a group meeting with the ambassadors, Xi also voiced optimism about China’s economic prospects, saying that the nation will share “the dividends of its supersized market”.
Currently, China is advancing the building of a strong nation and the great cause of national rejuvenation on all fronts through the Chinese path to modernization, while its economy “continues its upward momentum amid steadfastness”, Xi said.
The nation will turn its new development into new opportunities for various countries, and “inject more certainty into global economic growth”, he added.
On Friday morning, as welcoming bugles sounded and honor guards of the People’s Liberation Army stood solemnly in formation outside the north gate of the Great Hall of the People, the new ambassadors of Vietnam, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Albania, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Angola, Egypt, Nicaragua, Iran, Chile, Ukraine, Benin, the United States, Israel and South Sudan arrived one by one to meet the president.
Xi accepted the credentials presented by the envoys and also posed for photos with each of them. He also met with Nurlan Yermekbayev, secretary-general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
After the ceremony, Xi delivered a speech welcoming the envoys and asked them to convey his best wishes to the leaders and the people of their respective countries.
Xi expressed his hope that the envoys will gain a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of China, and make earnest contributions to deepening China’s friendship with various countries and enhancing its exchanges with the rest of the world.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
China stands ready to work with all countries to firmly safeguard the international system with the UN at its core and the international order underpinned by international law, Xi said.
China is willing to work with all countries to practice friendly cooperation, promote mutual learning among civilizations, build a community with a shared future for humanity, and “join hands to create a better future for this planet”, he added.
Xi emphasized that amid accelerating global changes and a turbulent international landscape, countries around the world need to enhance solidarity and cooperation more than ever before. They should embrace a broad vision to rise above divisions and conflicts, and bear in mind the future of all humanity, he said.
China always cherishes its friendship with people across the globe, and stands ready to strengthen all-around cooperation and exchanges with other countries on the basis of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, Xi said.
