Defendant Charged as Part of Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Initiative

WASHINGTON – Ronald Aiken, 48, of the District of Columbia, has been charged in an indictment, unsealed today in U.S. District Court, on a federal firearms charge as part of the “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful” initiative.

The indictment was announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

Aiken is charged federally with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.

According to court documents, on June 10, 2025, members of the MPD’s Fifth District Crime Suppression Team were on patrol following two shootings in the area. As officers drove on the 1700 block of D Street NE, they observed a gray Audi sedan without a front registration plate driving the wrong way down a one-way street. Officers stopped the Audi on the 1700 block of Gales Street NE, and approached the driver, later identified as Ronald Aiken.

Through the window, officers observed an open can of beer in an unzipped backpack on the rear passenger seat. Officers searched the backpack and discovered a live round of ammunition. During a further search of the vehicle, officers discovered a firearm wedged behind the rear driver-side seat. Officers identified the firearm as a black Taurus G3 9×19 pistol, loaded with one round in the chamber and three additional rounds in the magazine.

Aiken is prohibited from possession a firearm and ammunition due to multiple prior felony convictions, including a 2024 Arlington County, Virginia Circuit Court conviction for the possession/transport of a firearm by a convicted felon.

This case is being investigated by the ATF Washington Field Office and the Metropolitan Police Department. Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan Sussler and Brendan Horan are prosecuting the case.

An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Hertford County Man Sentenced to Over Seven Years After Armed Robbery in Winton

    Source: US FBI

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Trevon Montez Freeman, of Hertford County, was sentenced today to 90 months in prison for interference with commerce by robbery and brandishing a firearm during the robbery.  Freeman, 21, pled guilty to the charges on February 11, 2025.

“Commercial armed robbery not only endangers the lives of victims and bystanders but tears at the fabric of our communities,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar. “This result reflects our commitment to holding violent offenders accountable and providing some justice to the victim in this case.”

According to court documents and other information presented in court, on November 26, 2023, just before 10 p.m., Hertford County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Winton Deli on S. Main Street in Winton.  The clerk, who was shaking and in tears, explained that she and her nephew had been closing the store when a black male ran into the store and aimed a tan handgun at them.  The robber, who was wearing a black ski mask, Air Force 1 shoes, and a black hoodie, ordered the clerk to the register at gunpoint.  He took bills and change, later determined to be $257, from the register and left the store.  Deputies attempted a K-9 track, which led to a parking lot where fresh tire marks indicate a car had sped away.

“The professionalism, dedication, and commitment shown by our team reflect our ongoing mission to protect the citizens and businesses of Hertford County,” said Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes. “We remain steadfast in our pledge that anyone who chooses to commit a crime in our county will be held accountable. We will not tolerate those who threaten the safety of our community.”

Surveillance video confirmed that the robber brandished a tan handgun with a light attached under the barrel.  He could be heard speaking on the video, and a deputy recognized the voice as belonging to the defendant Trevon Freeman.  Deputies began to patrol around Freeman’s house and just after midnight made a traffic stop on Freeman’s car for a speeding violation.  Freeman was wearing a black jacket and Air Force 1 shoes, and a black ski mask sat beside him in the passenger seat.  Deputies found a roll of bills and hundreds of coins in pocket, totaling nearly $200.

Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina made the announcement after sentencing by Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II.  The Hertford County Sheriff’s Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated this case.  Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jake D. Pugh and Phil Aubart prosecuted.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Man Indicted in Federal Court for Allegedly Carjacking Two Vehicles and Robbing Two Credit Unions in Chicago

    Source: US FBI

CHICAGO — A federal grand jury has indicted a man for allegedly carjacking two vehicles and robbing two credit unions in Chicago.

MAURICE D. LEE, JR., committed the carjackings and robberies in May of last year, according to an indictment returned in U.S. District Court in Chicago.  The first carjacking and robbery occurred on May 10, 2024, when Lee took a Toyota from a driver and robbed a credit union at the University of Illinois Chicago, the indictment alleges.  The second carjacking and robbery occurred on May 17, 2024, when Lee took a Toyota and robbed another credit union at the University of Illinois Chicago, the indictment states.  Lee allegedly brandished a handgun in all the carjackings and robberies.

The indictment charges Lee, 32, of Chicago, with two counts of carjacking, two counts of robbery, and four counts of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.  Each firearm count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years, resulting in a total mandatory minimum sentence of 28 years in federal prison.  Each robbery count is punishable by up to 20 years, while each carjacking count is punishable by up to 15 years.

Lee was arrested two days after the second robbery.  He was in state custody until his arrest last month in the federal case.  He remains detained without bond awaiting trial in federal court.  Arraignment is set for July 7, 2025, at 9:45 a.m., before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel A. Fuentes.

The indictment was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI.  Valuable assistance was provided by the University of Illinois Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Police Department.  The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Asheeka Desai.

The public is reminded that an indictment is not evidence of guilt.  The defendant is presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Firework Safety Tips for the Upcoming July 4th Holiday

Source: US State of New York

overnor Kathy Hochul today reminded New Yorkers to keep safe while celebrating the upcoming July 4th holiday. As part of a multi-agency effort, the New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection, along with the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Fire Prevention and Control and the New York State Department of Health, are providing tips to help New Yorkers stay safe while celebrating Independence Day with legal sparkling devices.

“As Governor, my top priority is public safety, and that is why I’m urging all New Yorkers to celebrate with caution this holiday weekend,” Governor Hochul said. “Those using legal sparkling devices should always follow instructions, keep children and bystanders at a safe distance, and light no more than one at a time to keep yourselves and your loved ones safe from preventable fireworks-related injuries.”

Every year, thousands of people – including many children, teens and young adults – are injured while using fireworks. Most of these injuries happen in the weeks surrounding the 4th of July. The most recent data collected by the Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) includes reports of 14,700 fireworks-related injuries in the United States in 2024, representing an increase of 52 percent from 2023. According to the latest CPSC release, adults ages 25 to 44 accounted for the largest share of reported injuries.

Common causes of fireworks-related injuries are:

    • Fast-fuse firecracker exploding before it can be thrown.
    • Misguided rocket striking a bystander.
    • Going to investigate why a firecracker “failed” to explode.

Approximately 20,000 fires are started by fireworks annually according to the National Fire Protection Association, including structure fires, vehicle fires, and outdoor fires.

Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley said, “As Independence Day celebrations kick off, it’s critical to always put safety first. Even legal sparkling devices can cause serious harm if not handled properly, so the safest choice is to leave fireworks to the professionals. But if you choose to use sparkling devices, be sure to follow these tips to prevent injuries and fires.”

New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Jackie Bray said, “Avoid the emergency room this holiday by leaving the fireworks to the professionals. Safety is always the first priority, and sparkling devices can cause serious harm. Enjoy your holiday by attending an event or streaming a firework show at home.”

New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said, “Fireworks may seem like harmless fun, but they pose very real dangers, especially to young people. Each year, we see far too many emergency visits due to preventable accidents. This Fourth of July, I urge all New Yorkers to make safety a priority, leave fireworks to trained professionals, and enjoy spending time with family and friends.”

New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said, “Gathering with friends and family to enjoy professional fireworks displays is a time-honored Fourth of July tradition across New York State. The Department of Labor is committed to ensuring these events are safe and enjoyable for all by conducting thorough inspections of fireworks display operators in advance of each show.”

The New York State Department of Labor’s Industry Inspection unit thoroughly inspects the safety operations and storage of the 350 NYSDOL certified pyrotechnicians statewide each year. NYSDOL also ensures compliance with regulations by inspecting around 120 pyrotechnic shows per year. To learn more about the regulations for pyrotechnics permits, visit the webpage.

FIREWORKS – WHAT’S PERMITTED AND WHAT’S NOT IN NEW YORK STATE

    What’s Permitted:

Sale of sparkling devices by registered sellers from June 1 until July 5 annually. Sparkling devices are ground-based or handheld sparking devices that produce a shower of colored sparks or colored flame, crackling or whistling noise and smoke. They do not launch into the air.

The possession and use of sparkling devices is PERMITTED in cities with populations of less than one million people and as permitted by local law. Be sure to check that sparkling devices are legal in your city, town, or county as local laws may change. You can contact your local sheriff’s office to ask whether your area allows the use of sparkling devices.

Users must be 18 years or older to use sparkling devices.

    What’s Not Permitted:
The possession and use of sparkling devices in cities with populations of more than one million people and where prohibited by local law, including New York City and the following counties: Albany, Columbia, Erie, Nassau, Orange (prohibited in the Cities of Middletown and Newburgh only), Schenectady, Suffolk, Warren and Westchester.

Fireworks and dangerous fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets, roman candles, spinners and aerial devices, are illegal statewide, except for displays conducted by authorized individuals as permitted by law.

Tips for Using Sparkling Devices Safely:

    • Children and sparklers are a dangerous combination. Never allow children to play with or ignite combustible items, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This is hot enough to melt some metals.
    • Never throw or point sparkling devices toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials. Always follow the instructions on the packaging.
    • Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.
    • Make sure the person lighting sparkling devices always wears eye protection.
    • Light only one sparkling device at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.”
    • Always use sparkling devices outdoors. Never light sparklers inside.
    • Store sparkling devices in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
    • If you are impaired by alcohol, don’t use sparkling devices.

While avoiding the use of illegal fireworks is the best way to prevent injury, people can also take precautions while watching professional fireworks displays. These include using earplugs to protect hearing, keeping a safe distance from the launch site, and leaving pets at home. If your pet is nervous around fireworks at home, please consult your veterinarian for ways to protect and comfort them.

Sales of sparkling devices by certified permanent and specialty retailers can only take place during the year from June 1 to July 5 and sales of sparkling devices by certified temporary stands or tents can only occur from June 20 to July 5. A list of registered sparkling device vendors and a video about avoiding injuries from fireworks appears here.

Adults are encouraged to provide children and teens with non-flammable alternatives to sparkling devices, which can be easily found at most retail stores including glow sticks and LED Items.

Washington, D.C. – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is alerting the public to a scam involving fraudulent phone calls from individuals claiming to be “ATF Officers” or “Agents.” These scammers, using phone numbers appearing to originate from Martinsburg, West Virginia, are instructing victims to purchase Apple gift cards in amounts of $500 or $1,000 to “clear a red flag” from their accounts. Victims are then asked to provide gift card numbers to the callers.

The ATF emphasizes that these calls are not legitimate and is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is actively investigating this scam. The public is urged to exercise caution and avoid sharing personal or financial information with unsolicited callers.

    ATF Will Never:

    Highlights:

    Haiti
    South Sudan

    ———————————
    CYPRUS
Following the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format that was held in Geneva on 17-18 March of this year, the Secretary-General will convene on 16 and 17 July, here at UN Headquarters, the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders, as well as representatives of the guarantor powers of Greece, Türkiye and the United Kingdom, for another informal meeting on Cyprus.
The meeting will provide an opportunity to continue the dialogue and exchange views on the progress made since March.

    OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY
Turning to the increasingly dire situation in Gaza, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that overnight, Israeli authorities issued a new displacement order for two neighbourhoods in Khan Younis, following reported Palestinian rocket fire. Up to 80,000 people are estimated to be living in these neighourhoods. Approximately 85 per cent of Gaza’s territory is currently either under displacement orders or located within militarized zones – which is severely hampering people’s access to essential humanitarian support and the ability of aid workers to reach those in need.
Our colleagues working on water, sanitation and hygiene also tell us that Al Satar – a key water reservoir – has become inaccessible as a result of the order. The facility serves as the main water distribution hub for Khan Younis and a critical supply point for water coming through the Israeli pipeline in the area.
Any damage to the reservoir could lead to a collapse of the city’s water distribution system, with grave humanitarian consequences.
OCHA warns that these displacement orders continue to strain vital services and push people into increasingly smaller swaths of Gaza’s territory. Since the breakdown of the ceasefire in March and as of yesterday, some 714,000 people have been forcibly displaced once more across Gaza, with nearly 29,000 displaced in just 24 hours between Sunday and Monday.
Many existing shelters are severely overcrowded, with poor hygiene conditions – posing severe risks for public health. Our partners working on health, water, sanitation and hygiene report that across Gaza, rates of acute watery diarrhea have reached 39 per cent among patients receiving health consultations.
The increase is being driven by insufficient clean drinking and domestic water reaching shelters, worsening the dire hygiene and sanitation conditions. The governorates of Gaza and Khan Younis have the worst levels of acute watery diarrhea, due to severe overcrowding in sites and shelters.
You will recall that no shelter assistance has entered Gaza in four months, despite the hundreds of thousands of newly displaced people. Our shelter partners say that 97 per cent of the sites surveyed reported displaced people sleeping in the open. OCHA reiterates that an unrestricted flow of supplies through multiple crossing points over a sustained period of time is critical to address people’s needs and prevent the already desperate situation from worsening.
Meanwhile, the depletion of fuel stocks continues to wreak havoc on aid operations, constraining the UN and our humanitarian partners’ ability to respond.
Yet again today, an attempt to deliver some of the remaining fuel stocks to the north was denied by Israeli authorities.
The denial follows a successful delivery yesterday of diesel from the World Health Organization’s remaining stock to Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City to prevent further shutdown of critical services. WHO says the facility is overwhelmed and severely under-resourced. Its beds are full, and patients are once again being treated on the floor.
Our partners working on emergency telecommunications stress that unless fuel stocks are replenished immediately, Gaza could face a complete communications blackout, severely hindering humanitarian access and coordination, and preventing affected communities from receiving critical information.
Critical water, sanitation, hygiene and healthcare facilities have already begun shutting down in some areas, including hospital equipment and services, water trucking, and water and sewage pumps. If the fuel crisis isn’t addressed soon, humanitarian responders could be left without the systems and tools necessary to operate safely, manage logistics and distribute humanitarian assistance. This would endanger aid workers and escalate an already dire humanitarian crisis.

    Source: European Parliament

    Question for written answer  E-002547/2025
    to the Commission
    Rule 144
    Mireia Borrás Pabón (PfE)

On 3 June 2025, hundreds of people gathered in la Vega de Mestanza (Málaga) to protest against the start of the construction of a wastewater treatment plant (the Málaga North WWTP).

If the WWTP is built, more than 20 000 orange and lemon trees will have to be felled and one of the last local farming areas, capable of producing between 1.5 and 2 million kilos of citrus fruit, will disappear.

The project – strongly opposed locally because of its agronomic/environmental impact and because it is being built in an area at high risk of flooding – is an attack on nature with irreparable consequences.

In the light of the above:

    • 1.Is the Commission aware of the dangers of building a WWTP of this nature in a flood-prone area like la Vega de Mestanza?
    • 2.Does it share the view that the Regional Government of Andalusia may be in breach of the Water Framework Directive with regard to flood risk assessment and management?
    • 3.Is it aware that competition for land and the loss of fertile farmland is pushing the farming community to the brink?

This tragedy claimed the lives of approximately 102 people in the Eastern Cape.

This follows the South African Weather Service’s prediction of severe weather, including heavy rainfall, snow and strong winds, which led the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal to activate their disaster response plans.

However, the Eastern Cape experienced particularly devastating impacts, with torrential rains leading to unprecedented floods in districts such as Nelson Mandela Bay, Chris Hani, and OR Tambo.

“Families lost everything in a matter of hours. Sadly, over 100 South Africans – children, parents, and grandparents – lost their lives,” the Minister said.

The severe floods not only washed away homes and infrastructure, but Hlabisa said they also shattered the very fabric of families and communities, leaving thousands homeless and schools submerged.

In a moment of reflection, the Minister extended condolences to those affected: “On behalf of the Ministry and the Departments of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, we offer our deepest condolences to every grieving family and to every person who has lost not only a loved one but also a sense of stability and hope.”

As a mark of respect, the National Assembly observed a minute of silence in honour of the deceased.

Meanwhile, in response to the devastation, the Minister has since authorised the National Disaster Management Centre to officially classify the events as a National Disaster, facilitating immediate and necessary interventions.

“We are now urgently working to support the affected provinces and municipalities, not just with words but with the resources they need to recover and rebuild,” the Minister said.

Meanwhile, he announced that technical assessment teams have already been deployed, with work being coordinated through the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) to evaluate the damage to essential infrastructure, including roads, bridges and sanitation systems.

“This powerful partnership strengthens our rapid response and operational readiness during emergencies,” the Minister added, highlighting the collaboration with the South African National Defence Force to enhance national capacity.

In addition, the Minister said South Africa is concurrently holding the Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20), focusing specifically on disaster risk reduction.

“Through the G20, we learn from the world and share our experiences,” said the Minister.

He stressed the significance of global cooperation in addressing disaster-related challenges.

With the first G20 technical meeting having taken place earlier this year in KwaZulu-Natal, Hlabisa said attention now turns to the second meeting scheduled for next week in Johannesburg.

The working group will address critical areas such as ecosystem-based approaches and nature-based solutions for disaster risk reduction, disaster-resilient infrastructure, and strategies for disaster recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.

“These focus areas are more than just abstract policy themes; they are lifelines for the future,” the Minister stated.

“They are the answers we seek when we ask: How do we prevent the next floods from becoming a national tragedy? How do we ensure communities bounce back stronger, not just survive?”

As South Africa continues to grapple with the repercussions of this disaster, he said the country is now shifting its commitment to recovery, resilience, and international collaboration.

The Minister also announced a budget allocation for Cooperative Governance amounting to R410.9 billion over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) period.

He said that a staggering 96.7% of this budget is earmarked for intergovernmental transfers and support to various entities that deliver tangible and measurable improvements in the lives of South Africans.

In addition to the allocations for Cooperative Governance, Hlabisa said Traditional Affairs will see an appropriated budget of R195 530 million for the fiscal year 2025/26. – SAnews.gov.za

GAZA, July 2 (Xinhua) — Palestinian Hamas movement said on Wednesday it is holding consultations to discuss mediators’ proposals for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

As noted in the statement, Hamas “acts with a high sense of responsibility” and is consulting on the mediators’ proposals to reach an agreement that will guarantee an end to Israeli aggression, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the delivery of emergency humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.

“The mediators are making intensive efforts to bridge the gap between the parties, reach a framework agreement and begin a new round of serious negotiations,” the statement said.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced Israel’s agreement to the terms of a 60-day ceasefire and called on Hamas to accept the deal.

“I hope for the good of the Middle East, Hamas accepts this deal because it won’t get better, it will only get worse,” Trump warned on the Truth Social social network.

Hamas and Israel have held several rounds of indirect talks in recent months, but no final ceasefire agreement has been reached. In previous talks, Hamas demanded a complete end to the fighting, while Israel insisted on only a temporary truce.

Israel resumed full-scale military action in Gaza on March 18, ending a two-month ceasefire. At least 6,454 Palestinians have been killed and 22,551 wounded since then, according to figures released by Gaza’s health authority on Wednesday.

The total number of Palestinians killed since the start of the current round of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in October 2023 has risen to 57,012, with the total number of wounded reaching 134,592, the ministry added. –0–

    Source: Government of Canada News

July 2, 2025Ottawa—As Canada’s climate continues to warm faster than the global average, extreme weather conditions will become more frequent and severe. This will contribute to increased drought and wildfire risks, which threaten the health, safety and economic stability of people and communities in Canada. The Government of Canada is committed to supporting those affected across the country.

Today, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced special measures to help people and communities affected by wildfires.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents whose passports, citizenship certificates, permanent resident cards or other Canadian travel documents were lost, damaged or made inaccessible by the wildfires can apply for free replacements. If they already paid to replace documents because of the wildfires (on or after April 1, 2025), they can request a refund.

Temporary residents, including international students, temporary foreign workers and other visitors, who were directly affected by the wildfires can replace their status documents and apply to restore or extend their status in Canada, or to renew their work or study permit free of charge. The requirement for temporary residents to apply for the restoration of their status within 90 days of losing their status will also be waived for those impacted by wildfires.

Additionally, as of June 11, 2025, application and biometric fees are being waived for foreign emergency services personnel coming to Canada to help fight wildfires.

These measures are in effect until November 30, 2025, providing time for people to secure necessary documents and focus on recovery and safety.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that Kelvin Hunt, 48, of Rochester, NY, who was convicted of production of child pornography following a prior conviction, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, was sentenced to serve 465 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas M. Testani, who handled the case, stated that in March 1995, Hunt was convicted in Monroe County Court of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree and sentenced to 2 to 6 years in prison. On February 2, 2024, he entered the home of a 14-year-old minor victim in Rochester, and forcibly raped her. Hunt then took the minor victim’s cell phone and took sexually explicit photos of her. After producing the pornographic images, Hunt forced the minor victim to another location, where he forcibly raped her again. On February 4, 2024, law enforcement located Hunt, took him into custody, and executed a search warrant on the hotel room he was staying in. Investigators seized a loaded semi-automatic handgun, and approximately 71 grams of heroin.

The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation by the Rochester Police Department, under the direction of Chief David Smith, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Todd Baxter, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Mark Grimm, and the United States Marshals Service, under the direction of Marshal Charles Salina.

  • MIL-OSI Security: District of South Dakota Seizes 230 Illegally Possessed Firearms in 2024

    Source: US FBI

SIOUX FALLS – United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced today that over the course of 2024, federal, state, tribal, and local law enforcement agencies seized 230 firearms that were possessed in violation of federal law. In the same year, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota charged approximately 112 defendants with illegally owning, possessing, using, or obtaining one or more such firearms.

“By seizing firearms from individuals who are prohibited from possessing firearms, law enforcement agencies prevented countless violent and drug-related crimes from occurring in communities across South Dakota,” said U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office is grateful for the strong law enforcement partnerships in South Dakota, which allow us to combine federal, state, and tribal resources to target some of the most dangerous individuals in our state and remove illegal firearms from our streets.”

Efforts to seize illegal firearms are the result of close cooperation between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), South Dakota State Highway Patrol, and numerous sheriff’s offices and police departments across the state, including Sioux Falls and Rapid City.

Examples of the types of firearms-related cases resolved by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2024 include the following:

    • United States v. Bryan Louis Archambeau—In the evening of November 2, 2023, Archambeau went to the 49’er Marathon C-Store in Sioux Falls wearing a medical mask. He entered the store and took two cases of Twisted Tea and exited the store without paying for the items. When confronted about the theft, Archambeau lifted his shirt, brandished a pistol, and then left the scene. Then, in the evening of November 3, 2023, Archambeau went to the Freedom Valu Center in Sioux Falls. He placed two-12 packs of Twisted Tea on the counter and pulled out a pistol from his waistband. He pointed it at the clerk, racked the slide of the pistol, and demanded money. Archambeau then left the scene. Archambeau was later convicted of Interference with Commerce by Means of Robbery and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence. He was sentenced to nearly 11 years in federal prison. The case was investigated by the ATF and the Sioux Falls Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Ebert-Webb.

    • United States v. Charles Colhoff—On November 4, 2023, Colhoff was involved in a shooting in Rapid City where he and another individual exchanged gunfire following an argument. Colhoff was uninjured but the other individual sustained two gunshot wounds and required surgery. Officers processing the scene located three 9mm cartridge casings related to the shooting. Colhoff was located by law enforcement on November 11, 2023, and found to be in possession of a Browning 9mm semi-automatic pistol believed to be the same pistol Colhoff used in the shooting. Ballistics testing was conducted, which confirmed the three 9mm casings recovered at the shooting scene were fired from the pistol recovered from Colhoff. Colhoff knew he was prohibited from possessing firearms based on a prior federal felony offense, which also involved a firearm. Colhoff was sentenced to nine years in federal prison. The case was investigated by the ATF, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Rapid City Police Department. Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Patterson prosecuted the case.

    • United States v. Jerel Running Bear—On the evening of November 8, 2023, Running Bear and two other individuals, including a 21-year-old female victim, went to Wounded Knee to obtain fentanyl pills from a drug source. When the source did not show up, Running Bear, who was under the influence of controlled substances, grabbed a rifle from the trunk of the vehicle and shot the female who was seated in the backseat. The other female took off running and alerted law enforcement. Running Bear then picked up Fast Horse, his girlfriend at the time. Running Bear removed the victim from the vehicle and left her on the side of the road, while Fast Horse watched. The next day, the two fled to Nebraska after being spotted by law enforcement. Fast Horse threw out items from the vehicle, including controlled substances. The two were eventually apprehended. After Running Bear was placed into custody, Fast Horse did not tell law enforcement about watching Running Bear dispose of the victim’s body on the side of the road. Running Bear was convicted of Second Degree Murder and Discharge of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime of Violence. He was sentenced to 27 years in federal prison. This case was investigated by the FBI and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case.

    • United States v. Justin James Schneider—On June 20, 2023, the Corson County Sheriff’s Office received credible information that Schneider had discharged a revolver earlier that day and was armed and dangerous. The Corson County Sheriff requested and received assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services to detain and arrest Schneider. A BIA officer found Schneider in Bullhead, South Dakota, in the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation. When the officer attempted to arrest him, Schneider fled in his pickup to a nearby pasture and engaged in an armed stand-off with Corson County deputies and BIA police officers. Schneider eventually got back into his pickup and fled to the Bullhead Community Center, striking a police squad car en route. Schneider then exited his pickup, brandishing a revolver, gesturing wildly towards nearby civilians and disregarding repeated police commands to drop his gun. As Schneider moved quickly towards unarmed children, a police officer shot him to protect the public. Schneider was taken into custody without further incident. Schneider was convicted of Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm and Simple Assault on a Federal Officer. He was sentenced to over 13 years in federal prison. This case was investigated by the FBI, the Corson County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem prosecuted the case.

    • United States v. Antoine Ray Thomas, et al.—Thomas was part of a large methamphetamine and fentanyl distribution organization operating in South Dakota, which was obtaining drugs from Mexico. The conspiracy involved fifty pounds of methamphetamine, hundreds of pills containing fentanyl, and several firearms and ammunition. Thomas was convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute over 500 grams of Methamphetamine and Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. He was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. This case was investigated by the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, and the Sioux Falls Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Elizabeth Ebert-Webb  and Mark Hodges prosecuted the case.

The District of South Dakota’s prosecution of illegal firearms is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

With this official launch, Brain Defender aims to lead a transformative shift in how individuals support brain wellness—by blending natural nutrients, neuroprotective compounds, and advanced botanical extracts into one streamlined supplement.

Brain Defender: Purpose-Built for Cognitive Protection and Advancement

Brain Defender is not just another brain supplement—it’s the culmination of extensive research into the neurological needs of the modern mind. The brand’s development was driven by the rising demand for cognitive resilience in the face of stress, fatigue, aging, and digital overstimulation. From students and professionals to older adults prioritizing longevity, Brain Defender Supplement has been formulated to offer powerful cognitive support tailored for all lifestyles.

Each capsule contains a precise synergy of vitamins, adaptogens, amino acids, and plant-based nootropics that are believed to help nurture neuron pathways, support neurotransmitter balance, and strengthen mental clarity.

Scientific Rationale Behind Brain Defender’s Development

The core of Brain Defender’s formulation lies in an understanding of how the brain operates under daily cognitive demand. As individuals navigate through complex tasks, multitasking, and long periods of concentration, the brain often endures oxidative stress, neurotransmitter imbalance, and a decrease in key nutrients that help maintain mental acuity.

Brain Defender was meticulously developed to address these challenges. Brain Defender Supplement includes well-researched components such as Bacopa monnieri, Ginkgo biloba, phosphatidylserine, and L-theanine—each selected for its known role in cognitive enhancement and neuroprotection.

This evidence-based approach ensures that Brain Defender doesn’t just aim for short bursts of alertness—it works to create a foundation for long-term mental performance, mental calmness, and sharp thinking.

Key Ingredients That Power Brain Defender

Brain Defender’s proprietary blend is rooted in transparency and effectiveness. Here is a breakdown of its most notable components and their benefits:

    Bacopa Monnieri

Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, Bacopa is recognized for promoting attention span and memory processing. It is believed to support dendrite branching, which plays a critical role in long-term memory retention.

    Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo helps support cerebral circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the brain. This botanical extract is associated with improvements in alertness and cognitive endurance.

    Phosphatidylserine

This phospholipid is essential for healthy brain cell membranes. It contributes to communication between neurons and has been linked to cognitive fluidity and better memory encoding.

    L-Theanine

Sourced from green tea, L-theanine promotes calm focus by increasing alpha brain wave activity. This amino acid helps reduce mental distractions while enhancing a state of relaxed alertness.

    Rhodiola Rosea

An adaptogen known for its ability to help the body cope with stress, Rhodiola is included to improve stamina, reduce brain fog, and promote a resilient mental state.

    Vitamin B Complex

Essential B vitamins, including B6, B9 (folate), and B12, are vital for neurotransmitter function, energy metabolism, and brain cell nourishment.

    Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR)

This amino acid supports mitochondrial function and assists in producing the energy required for sustained cognitive performance.

Behind the Brand: The Mission of Brain Defender

Brain Defender was conceived with a bold mission:

“To empower the brain with the nourishment, clarity, and defense it needs in a demanding, overstimulated world.”

Modern lifestyles—filled with digital distractions, chronic stress, lack of sleep, poor diets, and aging—take a toll on mental clarity. Brain Defender was developed as a long-term solution, not a temporary stimulant, to help restore and protect cognitive function naturally and effectively.

What Brain Defender Aims to Solve

Brain Defender supports individuals dealing with:

    • Mental fatigue
    • Lack of concentration
    • Forgetfulness
    • Low motivation or productivity
    • Stress-induced brain fog
    • Age-related cognitive slowdown

By focusing on the root causes—such as oxidative stress, neurotransmitter imbalances, and poor nutrient availability—Brain Defender provides the brain with tools to perform optimally every day.

    Brain Defender Formulation Philosophy

Brain Defender uses a synergistic approach. Rather than relying on a single “miracle” ingredient, it combines multiple compounds known to benefit different aspects of cognition, including:

    1. Neuroprotection – safeguarding neurons from damage
    2. Neurogenesis support – encouraging new brain cell growth
    3. Neurotransmitter balance – improving communication between brain cells
    4. Blood flow enhancement – delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the brain

The product is free from stimulants like caffeine and is non-habit-forming, making it safe for long-term daily use.

    Additional Noteworthy Ingredients

In addition to the previously mentioned core ingredients, Brain Defender includes:

    • Lion’s Mane Mushroom – A mushroom extract studied for its ability to stimulate Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), potentially supporting regeneration of brain cells.
    • Citicoline (CDP-Choline) – Supports phospholipid synthesis and memory formation.
    • Huperzine A – A plant-based compound that may inhibit acetylcholinesterase, helping to sustain neurotransmitter levels related to memory and alertness.
    • Ashwagandha Root Extract – Known for its calming, anti-stress adaptogenic effects, promoting a relaxed yet alert cognitive state.

    Manufacturing & Quality Standards

    • GMP-Certified Facility: Brain Defender is produced in a facility compliant with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
    • USA-Made: Manufactured in the United States under strict quality control.
    • Third-Party Tested: Each batch is tested for contaminants, potency, and purity.

    Source: Washington State News 2

Extra travel time needed between Jefferson and Kitsap counties

SHINE – Travelers between Jefferson and Kitsap counties across Hood Canal should prepare for longer delays Tuesday, July 15. The State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge will be reduced down to single lane, one-way alternating traffic for repairs to a hydraulic component for the bridge.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, Washington State Department of Transportation bridge crews will close one lane across the bridge to create a work zone for a large crane. The crane is needed to replace a 6,000-pound hydraulic cylinder on the west span of the bridge.

Alternating one-way vehicle traffic will be in place while crews remove the existing hydraulic cylinder and install a new one.

This work must be done during the day for safety and efficiency. High winds have the potential to cancel the work.

    WSDOT needs help from travelers

During the closure travelers are encouraged to:

    • Add extra travel time to help prevent delays.
    • Consider postponing discretionary trips.
    • Travel before or after scheduled work hours.
    • Refrain from blocking driveways on SR 3 and SR 104 in Kitsap and Jefferson counties.

The day after work is completed, Wednesday, July 16, travelers can expect several draw span closures to vehicle traffic. Each closure is scheduled to be 30 minutes or less and allows crews to flush the hydraulic system.

    Why is this work needed

The hydraulic cylinder, also called a ram, is a vertical piece of equipment used to lift and lower the driving surface of the bridge when it opens for boat traffic. During a recent inspection, crews discovered a hydraulic leak in one of the 12 rams on the west side of the bridge. Engineers determined it was caused by saltwater corrosion on the ram. Hydraulic leaks, left unaddressed, will cause the hydraulic lift to fail, risking damage to the bridge.

Since the discovery of the leak, the bridge has been restricted to 300-foot openings for boat traffic. The bridge is designed to open to 600 feet, which is needed for some commercial and military marine openings, and also during storm season to relieve pressure on the bridge.

    Background

This is the first ram replacement on the west span since they were installed in 2009 as part of a bridge replacement and retrofit project.

The 7,867-foot-long Hood Canal Bridge is one of the longest floating bridges in the world, and the only one that spans across saltwater. The bridge requires constant maintenance due to the harsh marine environment.

Long established maritime laws require the Hood Canal Bridge and other movable bridges like it to open for marine traffic.

Real time travel information in available on the Hood Canal Bridge webpage, the WSDOT app and the online travel map. Travelers can also sign up to receive email alerts for advanced notice about work on the Hood Canal Bridge.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ahead of GOP Budget Vote, Pettersen Highlights CO Families Who Could Lose Health Care

Source: United States House of Representatives – Representative Brittany Pettersen (Colorado 7th District)

Today, U.S. Representative Brittany Pettersen (CO-07) highlighted stories from Coloradans who would be directly impacted by the Republican plan to gut Medicaid. The proposal – which passed the Senate and is expected to be voted on in the House – would strip care from 11.8 million Americans while adding $3.3 trillion to the national deficit.

“We’re talking about real people who will be devastated by Republicans’ billionaire-first budget – seniors like Debby, who needs Medicaid for care after having a stroke seven years ago; like Athena, who was able to recover and return to work after getting mental health treatment; and like Margy, who needs 24/7 care for advanced MS,” said Pettersen. “The ramifications of this disastrous bill cannot be understated – hospitals and nursing homes shuttered, kids turned away from the doctor’s office, people with disabilities left to fend for themselves, and emergency rooms completely flooded. I’m not just a no on this legislation, I’m a hell no. Colorado families deserve so much better.”

Pettersen shared the stories of Coloradans who would be harmed by the GOP proposal:

Debby from Salida: After having a stroke seven years ago, Debby relies on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) because she is unable to work. Thanks to Medicaid, Debby can see the doctor she needs to and never has to worry about how she will put food on the table. Health care is already out of reach for too many people but without Medicaid, seniors like Debby will go bankrupt trying to afford the care they need.

    Debby from Salida

Evan and Margy from Lakewood: Margy has advanced-stage MS and needs 24/7 care. Medicaid has been the only way their family has managed to stay afloat. Without it, they’d be pushed past the brink.

    Evan and Margy from Lakewood

Athena from Denver: After struggling with her mental health and losing the ability to work, Athena used Medicaid to access critical treatment and rebuild her life. Today, she’s back in the workforce and helping others do the same.

    Athena from Denver

Sunny from Wheat Ridge: After losing everything in a house fire, Sunny turned to Medicaid and SNAP to support her family. Medicaid ensured her husband could receive epilepsy treatment and her son got care through Colorado’s autism waiver program.

    Sunny from Wheat Ridge

More than 111,000 people in Colorado’s 7th District rely on Medicaid, including over 41,000 children. Nationally, Medicaid covers 40% of all births. Pettersen is pushing back against the GOP plan and calling for stronger support for the families who need it most.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Padilla, Scanlon Announce Bicameral Legislation to Crack Down on Fraudulent Firearm Sales

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.)

Padilla, Scanlon Announce Bicameral Legislation to Crack Down on Fraudulent Firearm Sales

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the gun violence epidemic continues to devastate American communities, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Pa.-05) announced a bicameral bill to make the fraudulent sale, advertising, or transfer of firearms a federal crime. The Stopping the Fraudulent Sale of Firearms Act would close this dangerous loophole and address a critical gap in gun safety enforcement, including online listings that deceptively evade tech companies’ terms of service.

Federal law requires background checks for gun sales by licensed dealers, and 22 states extend that requirement to unlicensed sellers. Still, individuals who would fail a routine background check — such as those with felony convictions, domestic violence restraining orders, or a history of severe mental illness — frequently obtain firearms through online marketplaces that lack meaningful oversight. According to Everytown, nearly 1 in 9 prospective buyers who respond to online ads from unlicensed sellers would fail a background check.

Cracking down on fraudulent sellers would reduce the illegal flow of firearms to individuals prohibited from possessing them and strengthen efforts to protect communities from preventable violence.

“Background checks save lives by keeping guns out of the wrong hands, but fast-growing online marketplaces are making it easier to dodge these critical protections,” said Senator Padilla. “Fraudulent sales on these online marketplaces create a backdoor for dangerous individuals — even in states with strong gun laws. By prohibiting fraudulent transactions and holding deceptive sellers accountable, our bill would reinforce background check requirements and help prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands.”

“Background checks work, and everyone who tries to buy a gun should have to pass one,” said Representative Scanlon. “It’s time to crack down on deceptive online sales practices that give dangerous people unchecked access to guns and make our communities less safe. I’m proud to lead this common sense legislation that would make these misleading practices illegal – one solution of many that we know will reduce gun violence and save lives.”

As the online firearm marketplace has emerged as a growing venue for anonymous gun purchases, criminals and other prohibited purchasers have gained easier access to firearms. In response, Meta, YouTube, and other technology companies have banned firearm sales on their platforms. However, sellers frequently circumvent these restrictions by fraudulently disguising listings. For example, on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, guns may be advertised as “stickers” featuring firearm brand logos, while the actual weapons are sold off the record. These tactics allow sellers to sidestep platform rules and legal requirements, enabling dangerous individuals to acquire firearms undetected. As long as online platforms remain vulnerable to abuse through disguised listings and fraudulent sales tactics, individuals intent on doing harm will continue to exploit them, putting public safety and community well-being at risk.

To address this growing loophole, the Stopping the Fraudulent Sale of Firearms Act would amend the federal criminal code to prohibit the fraudulent importation, manufacture, and sale of firearms or ammunition, as well as the transmission of any communication related to such fraudulent activity. Violators could face a fine, up to five years in prison, or both.

The Stopping the Fraudulent Sale of Firearms Act is endorsed by Brady United, Everytown, GIFFORDS, and Newtown Action Alliance.

“All too often, unlicensed gun dealers circumvent firearm sale restrictions set by technology companies and create fake listings to covertly sell firearms and ammunition. This practice violates companies’ terms of service and enables widespread gun trafficking. By addressing the dangerous practice of false advertisements that facilitate firearm sales online, the Stopping the Fraudulent Sale of Firearms Act will address the realities of the 21st century and prevent deceitful gun sales. Brady is grateful to Senator Padilla for championing this critical legislation,” said Mark Collins, Director of Federal Policy, Brady.

“Online gun traffickers are exploiting deadly loopholes to put firearms into the hands of dangerous individuals—without background checks, oversight, or accountability. The Stopping the Fraudulent Sale of Firearms Act will help close one of the internet’s most lethal black markets by cracking down on deceptive online sales. If tech platforms won’t stop these fraudulent listings, Congress must. We applaud Senator Padilla for taking bold action to protect our communities from preventable gun violence,” said Po Murray, Chairwoman, Newtown Action Alliance.

“Gun trafficking and bypassed background checks pose a threat to public safety and to law enforcement. Deceptively selling firearms and ammunition online will result in dangerous weapons falling into the hands of dangerous individuals who should not have them. I want to thank Senator Padilla for highlighting this important issue, and for putting forth this crucial bill to address it,” said Emma Brown, Executive Director of GIFFORDS.

Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Andy Kim (D-N.J.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) are cosponsoring the bill.

Senator Padilla is a strong advocate for commonsense, lifesaving gun safety reforms. Last week, Padilla introduced bicameral legislation to prevent the federal government from contracting with federally licensed firearms dealers that have a documented history of selling a disproportionate number of guns that end up being used to commit violent crimes. Earlier this year, Padilla co-led the bicameral reintroduction of the Assault Weapons Ban of 2025, legislation to reinstate a nationwide ban on military-style assault weapons. He also led 18 Senators in introducing the Age 21 Act, legislation to raise the minimum age to purchase assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines from 18 to 21, the same age requirement that already applies to purchasing handguns from federally licensed dealers. In June 2022, Padilla voted to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun safety legislation in almost 30 years. In 2023, Padilla joined 27 of his Senate colleagues in reintroducing the Keep Americans Safe Act, renewing efforts to ban the importation, sale, manufacturing, transfer, or possession of gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Duckworth, King, Collins and Budzinski Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Protect Our Troops and Strengthen Domestic Manufacturing

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Illinois Tammy Duckworth

    July 02, 2025

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Combat Veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), U.S. Senators Angus King (I-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME) and U.S. Representatives Nikki Budzinski (D-IL-13), Mike Bost (R-IL-12) and Jared Golden (D-ME-02) are introducing legislation to ensure our troops are wearing high quality, safe and reliable footwear as part of their uniforms all while strengthening our national security and creating good-paying jobs. The Better Outfitting Our Troops (BOOTS) Act would expand current uniform regulations to ensure the combat boots worn by our servicemembers are entirely manufactured in America and made with U.S.-sourced materials.

“Ensuring our military’s readiness means every part of our servicemembers’ uniforms must be functional, reliable and safe—and that we can surge supplies in crisis or conflict,” Duckworth said. “Mandating that all optional combat boots be American made means not only that our troops wear high-quality footwear, it also means we’re reducing our reliance on foreign supply chains, bolstering our defense industrial base and creating good-paying jobs for small and large manufacturers in communities right here at home. I’m proud to introduce this commonsense legislation.”

“Our military depends on the availability, accessibility, safety and quality of the uniforms worn by our servicemembers,” said King. “The bipartisan BOOTS Act will ensure that all combat boots and parts worn by the American military are made in the USA—both boosting our domestic economy and ensuring the safety of the boots supply chain. Thank you to my colleagues for putting our servicemembers first.”

“Requiring our servicemembers’ combat boots to be produced in the United States with American materials improves military readiness and strengthens our defense industrial base,” said Collins. “This bipartisan bill would help avoid supply disruptions in times of crisis, create more jobs and investment domestically, and better outfit our nation’s troops.”

“Belleville Boots has been crafting top-quality military footwear for our service members since World War I. But like so many American manufacturers, they’re facing unfair competition from a flood of cheap, low-quality imports—often from countries like China. This not only undercuts American jobs, it poses real risks to troop readiness and our national security,” said Budzinski. “The BOOTS Act is a strong, bipartisan response to that threat. This legislation will safeguard our service members while good-paying manufacturing jobs in Belleville and across the country.”

“As a Marine, the father of a Marine, and the grandfather of a Marine, I know firsthand how important it is that our troops have the high-quality boots required to face tough terrain,” said Bost. “This legislation will better protect our troops by ensuring their equipment is consistent, safe, and produced on American soil.”

“American warfighters should be supplied American gear, including footwear,” said Golden. “Ensuring domestic suppliers are first in line to provide equipment to our service members is good for troops, good for the jobs, and good for domestic manufacturing. I’m proud to cosponsor the BOOTs Act to provide American-made footwear to the men and women who volunteer to defend America.”

The BOOTS Act would mandate that all optional combat boots worn by U.S. military servicemembers are Berry Amendment-compliant, or 100 percent made in the United States with U.S.-sourced materials.

Currently, Department of Defense (DoD) regulations permit soldiers to purchase foreign-made boots that mimic the appearance of regulation boots but fall far short in quality and durability. This loophole has allowed for a major increase in low quality, foreign-made boots that has led to a significant decline in demand from American companies, which in turn reduces domestic manufacturing capabilities and undermines our domestic defense supply chain. In the event of a major conflict, the current clothing and textile supply chain would be too fragile to meet demand.

This legislation is endorsed by A&E, American Sole, Belleville Boot Co., Draper Knitting, Emtex Global, G-Form, Glacial Lakes Rubber and Plastics, Grassland Stamping, Hope Global Manufacturing, Mississippi TanTec, McRae Footwear, Meramec, Meridian, Milliken, New Balance Athletics, PolyLabs, Rubberlite, Signet Mills, SX Industries, Thorogood, Unifi, Vibram Corporation, W.L. Gore and Associates, Worthen Industries, YKK USA, American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), U.S. Footwear Manufacturers Association (USFMA) and Warrior Protection and Readiness Coalition (WPRC).

“The BOOTs Act closes a gap in the Berry Amendment by requiring all military footwear sold through Department of Defense exchanges to be domestically sourced. Currently, foreign-made boots undermine military readiness and disadvantage American manufacturers, weakening the U.S. supply chain. This commonsense change ensures uniform consistency, reduces confusion for servicemembers, and supports the domestic industrial base as manufacturers rebuild capacity,” said Bill McCann, Executive Director of the United States Footwear Manufactures Association.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Crime in California drops again — state records second-lowest homicide rate since 1966

Source: US State of California Governor

    Jul 2, 2025

What you need to know: California is delivering on its promises – significant investments in public safety help ensure safety in communities statewide with lower crime rates in 2024.

Sacramento, CaliforniaAs the House of Representatives prepares to vote on President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Betrayal” that would slash public safety funding across the country, California continues to chart a different path — investing in real solutions that are delivering real results.

New data released by the California Department of Justice shows that in 2024, nearly every major crime category declined, including violent crime, property crime, homicides, aggravated assaults, motor vehicle theft, burglary, and robbery. In addition, total full-time criminal justice personnel increased 1.9% from 2023 to 2024.

In the wake of a nationwide spike in crime during the pandemic, California made the choice to invest — not abandon — our communities. While Republicans in Congress push a bill that would gut law enforcement funding and the President focuses on arresting farmworkers, California is showing what real public safety looks like: serious investments, strong enforcement, and real results.

    Governor Gavin Newsom

    Homicide rates

The 2024 homicide rate is now the second lowest since at least 1966. The overall number of homicides decreased by nearly 12% since 2023.

California’s homicide rates have historically been lower than many other states. According to CDC data from 2022, the latest year available for all states, Alabama’s homicide rate was 152% higher than California’s, Oklahoma’s was 41% higher and Arkansas’ was 100% higher.

    • Louisiana = 2nd worst homicide rate of any state in 2022
    • Alabama = 3rd worst homicide rate of any state in 2022
    • Arkansas = 6th worst homicide rate of any state in 2022
    • Tennessee = 10th worst homicide rate of any state in 2022
    • Oklahoma = 20th worst homicide rate of any state in 2022

    California Trends: 2023 and 2024

    • Violent Crime Rate: Decreased 6%
    • Property Crime Rate: ↓ Decreased 8.4%
    • Homicide Rate: ↓ Decreased 10.4%
    • Aggravated Assault Rate: ↓ Decreased 6.5%
    • Motor Vehicle Theft Rate: ↓ Decreased 15.2%
    • Burglary Rate: ↓ Decreased 9.1%
    • Robbery Rate: ↓ Decreased 6.3%

    Trends over time

Since 2019, property crime, arson, burglary, and robbery have all decreased in California. Burglary rate decreased 18.8% from 2019 to 2024, the largest decrease of all categories. During that same time period, property crime rate decreased 9.1%, arson rate decreased 8.7%, and robbery rate decreased 9.6%.

    Firearms vs. public safety

According to the Homicide in California report, firearms were still the most common weapon used in a homicide when a weapon was identified. Of all crime-linked guns recovered in 2024, 65% were not associated with a California sale, meaning that they likely originated out of state, in jurisdictions with weaker gun safety laws. Year after year, California is ranked as the #1 state in the country for its strong gun safety laws — along with some of the lowest rates of gun deaths — by Giffords Law Center and Everytown for Gun Safety

The data points are based on crimes reported to local law enforcement, which are then reported to CADOJ. The underlying data associated with the annual reports is available on OpenJustice here.

Stronger enforcement. Serious penalties. Real consequences.

California has invested $1.6 billion since 2019 to fight crime, help local governments hire more police, and improve public safety. In 2023, as part of California’s Public Safety Plan, the Governor announced the largest-ever investment to combat organized retail crime in state history, an annual 310% increase in proactive operations targeting organized retail crime, and special operations across the state to fight crime and improve public safety.

Last August, Governor Newsom signed into law the most significant bipartisan legislation to crack down on property crime in modern California history. Building on the state’s robust laws and record public safety funding, these bipartisan bills offer new tools to bolster ongoing efforts to hold criminals accountable for smash-and-grab robberies, property crime, retail theft, and auto burglaries. While California’s crime rate remains at near historic lows, these laws help California adapt to evolving criminal tactics to ensure perpetrators are effectively held accountable.

As part of the state’s largest-ever investment to combat organized retail crime, Governor Newsom announced last year the state distributed $267 million to 55 communities to help local communities combat organized retail crime. These funds have enabled cities and counties to hire more police, make more arrests, and secure more felony charges against suspects.

    Saturating key areas

Working collaboratively to heighten public safety, the Governor tasked the California Highway Patrol to work with local law enforcement areas in key areas to saturate high-crime areas, aiming to reduce roadway violence and criminal activity in the area, specifically vehicle theft and organized retail crime. Since the inception of this regional initiative, there have been over 7,300 arrests, more than 5,000 stolen vehicles recovered and over 350 firearms confiscated across Bakersfield, San Bernardino and Oakland.

  • MIL-OSI Security: 16 ‘Anti-Tren’ Members and Associates Charged with Cocaine and Firearms Trafficking

    Source: US FBI

HOUSTON – Several foreign nationals illegally residing in the Houston area are now in custody for drug trafficking and weapons charges following a law enforcement operation targeting Venezuelan nationals and alleged members or associates of the Anti-Tren transnational criminal organization, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.

Most are expected to make their initial appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Bray at 2 p.m.

The charges allege Anti-Tren is a criminal organization almost exclusively comprised of former members and associates of Tren de Aragua (TdA). Similar to TdA, purposes of Anti-Tren allegedly include preserving and protecting the power and territory of the organization and its members and associates through attempted murder, other acts of violence and threats of such. This includes targeting members and associates of TdA and enriching the members and associates of Anti-Tren through, among other things, the trafficking of firearms and controlled substances, according to the charges.

Two criminal complaints charge 14 Anti-Tren members and associates with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine. These include Luis Miguel Claros Sarmiento, 26, Dany E. Rojas, 28, Ismael Leon Belbin, 24, Andy Luis Alvarez Herrera, 28, Cesar Oskeiber Cabezas Pacheco, 26, and Cesar Mauricio Velasquez, 27; Venezuelan nationals Raul Armando Ramirez Correa, 24, Darwin Martinez, 37, Peter Davila, 34, Otis Jose Rodriguez Garcia, 31, Pedro Hernandez Delgado, 19, Jesus F. Fernandez Troconiz, 26, Embeer J. Gutierrez Ternawskyj, 24, as well as Raul Antonio Claros Sarmiento, 30, Honduras.

According to the allegations, two groups of individuals agreed to transport kilogram quantities of cocaine in exchange for $15,000 for each load with each group accepting half as payment in advance.

“The Southern District’s twin priorities are securing our border and the eradication of violent crime. This case implicates both,” said Ganjei. “Operation Take Back America means going on the offensive against transnational criminal organizations to ensure that they cannot take root in our community and endanger public safety. SDTX is going to be unapologetic in carrying out that mission.”

“These arrests are the largest takedown of suspected Anti-Tren members and associates by the FBI, so far, and they happened right here in Houston,” said Special Agent in Charge Douglas Williams of the FBI Houston Field Office. “These individuals are accused of engaging in a turf war with TdA members and carrying out numerous violent crimes throughout our city, including a mass shooting at a local sports bar that left six people wounded. Fortunately, for the good and safety of our community, these individuals are now in federal custody facing U.S.  justice.”

If convicted, they face up to life in prison and a possible $10 million fine.

Correa, Ternawskyj, Garcia, Delgado and Pedro Jose Ramirez Delgado, 26, are also charged separately with various weapons offenses based on their alleged possession and sale of firearms. If convicted of those charges, they could receive up to 15 years in prison.

Jose Miguel Briceno, 25, a Venzuelan national who resided in Houston illegally, is charged separately with unlawful possession of ammunition by an alien. The criminal complaint alleges he was involved in a mass shooting at the Latinas Sports Bar club in Houston in March where six people were wounded, four of whom were in critical condition. According to the complaint, Briceno used a firearm to shoot inside the doorway of the bar and then discarded the firearm which law enforcement never located. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years imprisonment and a maximum $250,000 possible fine.

The FBI Houston field office conducted this investigation with the assistance of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. Marshals Service and Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) – Enforcement and Removal Operations, Texas Department of Public Safety, Houston Police Department and Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Casey N. MacDonald and Anibal J. Alaniz are prosecuting the case along with Jason Harley from the Department of Justice’s Joint Task Force Vulcan (JTFV).

JTFV, which was created to combat MS-13 and now expanded to TdA under Attorney General Bondi, has been comprised of U.S. Attorney’s Offices across the country, including the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York; Eastern District of Texas; Southern District of Florida; Western District of Oklahoma; Northern District of Ohio; Eastern District of Virginia; Southern District of California; District of Columbia and Districts of New Jersey, Utah, Massachusetts, Nevada and Alaska as well as the Department of Justice’s National Security and Criminal Divisions. Additionally, the FBI; DEA; ICE-Homeland Security Investigations; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; U.S. Marshals Service; and Federal Bureau of Prisons have been essential law enforcement partners and spearheaded JTFV’s investigations.

This case is also a part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.

A criminal complaint is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.

  • MIL-OSI Security: West Tennessee Gang Member Sentenced for Possession of a Machinegun

Source: United States Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF)

Jackson, TN – A federal judge has sentenced Mekevin Woods, 23, of Bolivar, Tennessee, to 38 months in federal prison for possessing a machinegun conversion device, also known as a “switch.” Interim U.S. Attorney Joseph C. Murphy, Jr. announced the sentence today.

According to evidence presented in court, on December 23, 2023, an officer with the Bolivar Police Department (BPD) attempted a traffic stop of a gray 2022 Infiniti Q60.  When the driver refused to stop, he led the BPD officer on a high-speed pursuit reaching speeds of 80 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone. Finally, Woods, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, traveled into oncoming traffic, jumped from the vehicle, and fled on foot. While fleeing, the officer observed Woods with a firearm in his right hand.

Officers with the Bolivar Police Department ultimately arrested Woods with the assistance of a K-9 unit and located a Glock handgun loaded with 32 rounds in an extended magazine with a machinegun conversion device attached to the firearm. Officers also determined the vehicle was stolen out of Memphis. Woods was identified as a member of the TMO 45 gang, a hybrid street gang comprised of both adult and juvenile members, that is involved in firearms and narcotics trafficking and is responsible for several shooting incidents in the Fayette and Hardeman County area.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Jackson Resident Agency; and the Bolivar Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorney Christie Hopper prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Huffman Statement on Senate Passage of the Big, Ugly Bill

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jared Huffman Representing the 2nd District of California

    July 01, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Today, Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) released the following statement after the Senate passed President Trump’s Big, Ugly Bill:

“The Senate just jammed through a scorched-earth reconciliation bill so toxic that it is worse than the House version if you can believe it. It takes away healthcare from millions of Americans, rips food assistance from kids and seniors, and guts the very safeguards that protect our clean air and water — all to reward the same fossil fuel CEOs Trump asked for a billion-dollar campaign check. It props up the dirty energy of the past, suffocates clean energy, and sticks American families with higher costs, dirtier air and water, and growing floods, fires, and climate disasters.

“Republicans tried to push through the biggest public lands sell-off in modern history — and got rejected so badly they had to yank it. But make no mistake: this bill still guts protections, opens millions of acres to drilling, mining and logging, and rewrites the rules into a pay-to-play scheme for Trump’s billionaire donors. And this just adds to what the Trump administration is already doing to sell out our public lands to polluters and developers.

“This isn’t a beautiful bill; it’s a Big Betrayal. It slashes hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs. It kneecaps investments that are finally flowing to rural towns, Tribal Nations, and working-class communities. And it would drive up costs across the board — electricity, healthcare, food — forcing families to pay more just so fossil fuel CEOs and already wealthy corporations can rake in record profits. No wonder nearly two-thirds of Americans oppose it.

“Now it heads back to the House, where Republicans better be ready to explain why they’re ripping up healthcare and food assistance, selling out public lands, gutting clean air and water safeguards, and driving up energy bills, all so billionaires and Big Oil CEOs can get richer.”
