    ISLAMABAD, May 10 (Xinhua) — India fired air-to-surface missiles at three Pakistani air bases, but no strategic assets of the Pakistan Air Force were damaged, Pakistan Armed Forces Inter-Services Public Relations Chief Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said early Saturday.

    He said India carried out missile and drone strikes on Pakistani military installations in Punjab province, including Nur Khan, Murid and Shorkot air bases.

    MINSK, May 10 (Xinhua) — Belarus celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War in a colorful manner. Traditionally, on May 9, the capital and all regions of the country host numerous entertainment and sports events. Citizens honor veterans, lay flowers at monuments, and participate in patriotic events. For Belarusians, this is a special day of remembrance for the heroes and victims of the war. In 1941, the country, being part of the USSR, was the first to bear the brunt of the Nazi invaders, suffering horrific losses – every third person died.

    The most striking event of this festive day in Belarus was the military parade in Minsk. As planned, it began at the stele “Minsk – Hero City” at 20:30 local time. The speech was given by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

    “This is the victory of valiant warriors – Red Army soldiers, partisans, underground fighters and home front workers. This is the victory of the Soviet people, the people who liberated us from Nazism. On May 9, 1945, the sky was lit up by the first holiday fireworks. A peaceful life began, in which we tirelessly count the years and days of the events of the Great Patriotic War. For 80 years now, we have been celebrating the victory, remembering the heroes and bowing our heads before the fallen. We are holding a parade in honor of those who did not flinch and fought courageously,” the head of the Belarusian state emphasized.

    In his speech, A. Lukashenko also called on politicians, leaders and peoples of Western countries to remember the lessons of the Great Patriotic War and especially noted that Belarus’s peaceful rhetoric should not be misunderstood. “Yes, we call for peace. Yes, we want with all our hearts to stop all wars and conflicts on the planet. But we have done and will do everything necessary and even more to strengthen the country’s defense potential, maintain the combat readiness of the armed forces at a level that reliably ensures the protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Belarusian state,” he said.

    After the President’s speech, the parade began, in which about 4 thousand servicemen took part. The parade units included Belarusian servicemen from the Ground Forces, the Air Force, the Special Operations Forces, the Border Service, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the country, the Investigative Committee, and military educational institutions. Units from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan took part in the foot parade.

    At the invitation of the Ministry of Defense of Belarus, a 54-member ceremonial unit of the Honor Guard of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) took part in the parade in Minsk. Spectators greeted the Chinese military with thunderous applause as they marched in a clear and coordinated step in front of the stands. Ceremonial units of the PLA have already taken part in parades in Belarus three times by invitation (in 2018, 2019 and 2024).

    The parade in Minsk also featured over 220 units of military equipment. Among them were T-72B3 tanks, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, BTR-82A and BTR-70 armored personnel carriers, and 122-mm 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled artillery units. The parade crews also included Polonez multiple launch rocket systems, Iskander operational-tactical systems, and S-400 Triumph long- and medium-range anti-aircraft missile systems.

    Combat helicopters and aircraft of the Air Force and Air Defense Forces of Belarus and the Aerospace Forces of Russia flew over the spectators in the sky in eight groups. Among them were Mi-8 and Mi-35 helicopters, Su-25, An-26, Yak-130 aircraft.

    A special element of the military parade was its historical part. The cavalry of the war years, ceremonial officers with rifles and battle flags marched in front of the stands. The audience also highly appreciated the bright performance of the honor guard company of Belarus. The finale of the military parade featured a theatrical episode “We Will Live”, dedicated to the events of the war years. 1,250 people danced the Victory Waltz at the parade. After the show, a festive salute thundered.

    Chinese student Li Tingwei, who is studying in Belarus, shared his impressions of the parade. “I am very glad that I had the opportunity to watch the military parade. Victory Day is a tribute to the history of the country and a demonstration of respect for it. The parade showed that the Belarusian people honor history and cherish peace. As a Chinese student, I was most shocked and inspired by the sight of my country’s honor guard, whose powerful steps made me feel proud and deeply impressed by the hard-won peace and strong friendship between China and Belarus,” he said. –0–

    PROCLAMATION

    California is home to nearly nine million older residents who immeasurably enrich our families, communities, and economy through their diverse life experiences, cultures, and contributions. By 2030, one in four Californians will be 60 or older, and over one million will be 85 or older. Californians enjoy the fourth highest life expectancy in the United States, contributing to more people who reach the century mark than ever before with an estimated 28,388 people who will be age 100 or older in 2030.

    California is out in front of these national demographic shifts, continuing to deliver results in year five of the state’s 10-year Master Plan for Aging. Over the past year, we have elevated inclusive policies and programs that reflect many shared priorities of Californians. These include home and community care essential to our economy and our families; climate and disaster readiness efforts; behavioral health system modernization, including more geriatric care; expanding health care access and affordability, with more dementia prevention, screening, and care; and more affordable and accessible housing, transportation, and broadband in communities statewide.

    All Californians can be proud of the progress we’re making to build a state that fully includes and supports older adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers. These efforts and our work to confront ageism and ableism are a key component of my Administration’s commitment to building an inclusive California for all.

    The theme of Older Californians Month this year – Flip the Script on Aging – focuses on transforming how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging. Stigma and stereotypes are harmful to the self-image of older people and feed inequities and discrimination in systems of care and in communities more broadly. The Master Plan for Aging ensures all Californians have access to opportunities and services to live how and where they choose, providing person-centered services to those who need it most.

    The positive impact of our diverse and growing aging population is seen every day, from the record numbers of older adults in the workforce to the countless retirees and neighbors who volunteer their time to build up communities across the state.     SACRAMENTO — As California marks Wildfire Preparedness Week, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced CAL FIRE has launched a new artificial intelligence-powered chatbot on its website, fire.ca.gov. The tool is designed to help Californians more easily access critical fire prevention resources and near-real-time emergency information—offering support in 70 languages.

    The chatbot, “Ask CAL FIRE,” provides quick, reliable answers to commonly asked questions using information already available on CAL FIRE’s website and helps guide users to the appropriate pages for more detailed information. It also serves as a two-way tool – providing real-time insights to CAL FIRE on what information Californians are looking for.

    “California is harnessing technology and innovation to help people when it matters most. Ahead of peak wildfire season, we’re launching a new chatbot that will connect Californians with real-time information and resources in the language they speak. This is yet another way we’re transforming government to better serve people.”

    Whether looking for home hardening strategies, defensible space guidance, or the latest on wildfire incidents over 10 acres across the state, users now have a simpler, more accessible way to get the answers they need—any time, day or night. 

    “In an era of fast-moving wildfires, fast-moving information is essential,” said CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler. “Tools like this help ensure Californians from all walks of life get the guidance they need to stay safe and informed.”

    The initiative underscores CAL FIRE’s commitment to modernizing public communication tools and expanding equitable access to vital information about wildfire preparedness, emergency incidents, and career opportunities in fire service. 

    CAL FIRE is a global leader in utilizing innovation and technology to fight fires smarter, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), satellites, and more for wildfire detection, projection, response and suppression. CAL FIRE, in partnership with UC San Diego, was previously recognized by TIME magazine for its Best Invention of 2023, for using Artificial Intelligence to monitor over 1,000 cameras throughout the state and detect wildfires, allowing CAL FIRE to respond faster.

    At the same time, California has built up the largest aerial firefighting fleet in the world, including the recently added – and night-time capable – firefighting Fire Hawk helicopters to quickly and effectively contain wildfires.. 

    In addition to nearly doubling the state’s budget for CAL FIRE in recent years, the state has also dramatically increased work to prevent wildfire. While 57% of California’s forests are federally managed, the state government manages only 3% of the forestland. On state land, more than 2,200 projects are complete or underway, and in recent years, California has treated nearly 2 million acres – made possible by scaling up investments to 10 times the amount from when the Governor took office in 2019.

  • MIL-OSI USA: What NASA Is Learning from the Biggest Geomagnetic Storm in 20 Years

    One year on, NASA scientists are still making huge discoveries about the largest geomagnetic storm to hit Earth in two decades, the Gannon storm. The findings are helping us better understand and prepare for the ways in which the Sun’s activity can affect us.

    On May 10, 2024, the first G5 or “severe” geomagnetic storm in over two decades hit Earth. The event did not cause any catastrophic damages, but it did produce surprising effects on Earth. The storm, which has been called the best-documented geomagnetic storm in history, spread auroras to unusually low latitudes and produced effects spanning from the ground to near-Earth space.     One year ago today, representatives from NASA and about 30 other U.S. government agencies gathered for a special meeting to simulate and address a threat looming in space. The threat was not an asteroid or aliens, but our very own life-giving Sun.
    The inaugural Space Weather Tabletop Exercise was supposed to be a training event, where experts could work through the real-time ramifications of a geomagnetic storm, a global disruption to Earth’s magnetic field. Driven by solar eruptions, geomagnetic storms can decimate satellites, overload electrical grids, and expose astronauts to dangerous radiation. Minimizing the impacts of such storms requires close coordination, and this meeting was their chance to practice.
    Then, their simulation turned into reality.
    “The plan was to run through a hypothetical scenario, finding where our existing processes worked and where they needed improvement,” said Jamie Favors, director of NASA’s Space Weather Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “But then our hypothetical scenario was interrupted by a very real one.”
    On May 10, 2024, the first G5 or “severe” geomagnetic storm in over two decades hit Earth. The event, named the Gannon storm in memory of leading space weather physicist Jennifer Gannon, did not cause any catastrophic damages. But a year on, key insights from the Gannon storm are helping us understand and prepare for future geomagnetic storms.

    The Gannon storm had effects on and off our planet.
    On the ground, some high-voltage lines tripped, transformers overheated, and GPS-guided tractors veered off-course in the Midwestern U.S., further disrupting planting that had already been delayed by heavy rains that spring.

    “Not all farms were affected, but those that were lost on average about $17,000 per farm,” said Terry Griffin, a professor of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University. “It’s not catastrophic, but they’ll miss it.”
    In the air, the threat of higher radiation exposure, as well as communication and navigation losses, forced trans-Atlantic flights to change course.

    During the storm, Earth’s upper atmospheric layer called the thermosphere heated to unusually high temperatures. At 100 miles altitude, the temperature typically peaks at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, but during the storm it surpassed 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. NASA’s GOLD (Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk) mission observed the atmosphere expanding from the heat to create a strong wind that lofted heavy nitrogen particles higher.

    In orbit, the expanded atmosphere increased drag on thousands of satellites. NASA’s ICESat-2 lost altitude and entered safe mode while NASA’s Colorado Inner Radiation Belt Experiment (CIRBE) CubeSat deorbited prematurely five months after the storm. Others, such as the European Space Agency’s Sentinel mission, required more power to maintain their orbits and perform maneuvers to avoid collisions with space debris.
    The storm also dramatically changed the structure of an atmospheric layer called the ionosphere. A dense zone of the ionosphere that normally covers the equator at night dipped toward the South Pole in a check mark shape, causing a temporary gap near the equator.
    The Gannon storm also rocked Earth’s magnetosphere, the magnetic bubble surrounding the planet. Data from NASA missions MMS (Magnetospheric Multiscale) and THEMIS-ARTEMIS — short for Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions-Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence and Electrodynamics of the Moon’s Interaction with the Sun — saw giant, curling waves of particles and rolled-up magnetic fields along the edge of the CMEs. These waves were perfectly sized to periodically dump extra magnetic energy and mass into the magnetosphere upon impact, creating the largest electrical current seen in the magnetosphere in 20 years.
    Incoming energy and particles from the Sun also created two new temporary belts of energetic particles within the magnetosphere. Discovered by CIRBE, these belts formed between the Van Allen radiation belts that permanently surround Earth. The belt’s discovery is important to spacecraft and astronauts that can be imperiled by high-energy electrons and protons in the belts.

    The storm also ignited auroras around the globe, including places where these celestial light shows are rare. NASA’s Aurorasaurus project was flooded with more than 6,000 observer reports from over 55 countries and all seven continents.
    Photographers helped scientists understand why auroras observed throughout Japan were magenta rather than the typical red. Researchers studied hundreds of photos and found the auroras were surprisingly high — around 600 miles above the ground (200 miles higher than red auroras typically appear).

    In a paper published in the journal Scientific Reports, the research team says the peculiar color likely resulted from a mix of red and blue auroras, produced by oxygen and nitrogen molecules lofted higher than usual as the Gannon storm heated and expanded the upper atmosphere.
    “It typically needs some special circumstances, like we saw last May,” co-author Josh Pettit of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center said of Japan’s magenta auroras. “A very unique event indeed.”

    Impacts of the Sun’s amped-up solar activity didn’t end at Earth. The solar active region that sparked the Gannon storm eventually rotated away from our planet and redirected its outbursts toward Mars.
    As energetic particles from the Sun struck the Martian atmosphere, NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) orbiter watched auroras engulf the Red Planet from May 14 to 20.

    Solar particles overwhelmed the star camera on NASA’s 2001 Mars Odyssey orbiter (which uses stars to orient the spacecraft), causing the camera to cut out for almost an hour.
    On the Martian surface, images from the navigation cameras on NASA’s Curiosity rover were freckled with “snow” — streaks and specks caused by charged particles. Meanwhile, Curiosity’s Radiation Assessment Detector recorded the biggest surge of radiation since the rover landed in 2012. If astronauts had been there, they would have received a radiation dose of 8,100 micrograys — equivalent to 30 chest X-rays.

    The Gannon storm spread auroras to unusually low latitudes and has been called the best-documented geomagnetic storm in history. A year on, we have just begun unraveling its story. Data captured during this historic event will be analyzed for years to come, revealing new lessons about the nature of geomagnetic storms and how best to weather them.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Tracing radiation through the Marshall Islands: Reflections from a veteran Greenpeace nuclear campaigner

    We’ve visited Ground Zero. Not once, but three times. But for generations, before these locations were designated as such, they were the ancestral home to the people of the Marshall Islands.

    As part of a team of Greenpeace scientists and specialists from the Radiation Protection Advisers team, we have embarked on a six-week tour on board the Rainbow Warrior, sailing through one of the most disturbing chapters in human history: between 1946 and 1958, the United States detonated 67 nuclear bombs across the Marshall Islands — equivalent to 7200 Hiroshima explosions.

    During this period, testing nuclear weapons at the expense of wonderful ocean nations like the Marshall Islands was considered an acceptable practice, or as the US put it, “for the good of mankind”.

    Instead, the radioactive fallout left a deep and complex legacy — one that is both scientific and profoundly human, with communities displaced for generations.

    Between March and April, we travelled on the Greenpeace flagship vessel, the Rainbow Warrior, throughout the Marshall Islands, including to three northern atolls that bear the most severe scars of Cold War nuclear weapons testing:

    • Enewetak atoll, where, on Runit Island, stands a massive leaking concrete dome beneath which lies plutonium-contaminated waste, a result of a partial “clean-up” of some of the islands after the nuclear tests;
    • Bikini atoll, a place so beautiful, yet rendered uninhabitable by some of the most powerful nuclear detonations ever conducted; and
    • Rongelap atoll, where residents were exposed to radiation fallout and later convinced to return to contaminated land, part of what is now known as Project 4.1, a US medical experiment to test humans’  exposure to radiation.

    This isn’t fiction, nor the distant past. It’s a chapter of history still alive through the environment, the health of communities, and the data we’re collecting today.

    Each location we visit, each sample we take, adds to a clearer picture of some of the long-term impacts of nuclear testing—and highlights the importance of continuing to document, investigate, and attempt to understand and share these findings.

    These are our field notes from a journey through places that hold important lessons for science, justice, and global accountability.

    Our mission: why are we here?
     With the permission and support of the Marshallese government, a group of Greenpeace science and radiation experts, together with independent scientists, are in the island nation to assess, investigate, and document the long-term environmental and radiological consequences of nuclear weapons testing in the Marshall Islands.

    Our mission is grounded in science. We’re conducting field sampling and radiological surveys to gather data on what radioactivity remains in the environment — isotopes such as caesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium-239/240. These substances are released during nuclear explosions and can linger in the environment for decades, posing serious health risks, such as increased risk of cancers in organs and bones.

    But this work is not only about radiation measurements, it is also about bearing witness.

    We are here in solidarity with Marshallese communities who continue to live with the consequences of decisions made decades ago, without their consent and far from the public eye.

    Stop 1: Enewetak Atoll — the dome that shouldn’t exist

    At the far western edge of the Marshall Islands is Enewetak. The name might not ring a bell for many, but this atoll was the site of 43 US nuclear detonations. Today, it houses what may be one of the most radioactive places in the world — the Runit Dome.

    Once a tropical paradise thick with coconut palms, Runit Island is capped by a massive concrete structure the size of a football field. Under this dome — cracked, weather-worn, and only 46 centimetres thick in some places — lies 85,000 cubic metres of radioactive waste. These substances are not only confined to the crater — they are also found across the island’s soil, rendering Runit Island uninhabitable for all time.

    The contrast between what it once was and what it has become is staggering. We took samples near the dome’s base, where rising sea levels now routinely flood the area.

    We collected coconut from the island, which will be processed and prepared in the Rainbow Warrior’s onboard laboratory. Crops such as coconut are a known vector for radioactive isotope transfer, and tracking levels in food sources is essential for understanding long-term environmental and health risks.

    The local consequences of this simple fact are deeply unjust. While some atolls in the Marshall Islands can harvest and sell coconut products, the people of Enewetak are prohibited from doing so because of radioactive contamination.

    They have lost not only their land and safety but also their ability to sustain themselves economically. The radioactive legacy has robbed them of income and opportunity.

    One of the most alarming details about this dome is that there is no lining beneath the structure — it is in direct contact with the environment, while containing some of the most hazardous long-lived substances ever to exist on planet Earth. It was never built to withstand flooding, sea level rise, and climate change.

    The scientific questions are urgent: how much of this material is already leaking into the lagoon? What are the exposure risks to marine ecosystems and local communities?

    We are here to help answer questions with new, independent data, but still, being in the craters and walking on this ground where nuclear Armageddon was unleashed is an emotional and surreal journey.

    Stop 2: Bikini — a nuclear catastrophe, labelled ‘for the good of mankind’

    Unlike Chernobyl or Fukushima, where communities were devastated by catastrophic accidents, Bikini tells a different story. This was not an accident.

    The nuclear destruction of Bikini was deliberate, calculated, and executed with full knowledge that entire ways of life were going to be destroyed.

    Bikini Atoll is incredibly beautiful and would look idyllic on any postcard. But we know what lies beneath: the site of 23 nuclear detonations, including Castle Bravo, the largest ever nuclear weapons test conducted by the United States.

    Castle Bravo alone released more than 1000 times the explosive yield of the Hiroshima bomb. The radioactive fallout massively contaminated nearby islands and their populations, together with thousands of US military personnel.

    Bikini’s former residents were forcibly relocated in 1946 before nuclear testing began, with promises of a safe return. But the atoll is still uninhabited, and most of the new generations of Bikinians have never seen their home island.

    As we stood deep in the forest next to a massive concrete blast bunker, reality hit hard — behind its narrow lead-glass viewing window, US military personnel once watched the evaporation of Bikini lagoon.

    On our visit, we noticed there’s a spectral quality to Bikini. The homes of the Bikini islanders are long gone. In its place now stand a scattering of buildings left by the US Department of Energy: rusting canteens, rotting offices, sleeping quarters with peeling walls, and traces of the scientific experiments conducted here after the bombs fell.

    On dusty desks, we found radiation reports, notes detailing crop trials, and a notebook meticulously tracking the application of potassium to test plots of corn, alfalfa, lime, and native foods like coconut, pandanus, and banana. The potassium was intended to block the uptake of caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, by plant roots.

    The logic was simple: if these crops could be decontaminated, perhaps one day Bikini could be repopulated.

    We collected samples of coconuts and soil — key indicators of internal exposure risk if humans were to return. Bikini raises a stark question: What does “safe” mean, and who gets to decide?

    The US declared parts of Bikini habitable in 1970, only to evacuate people again eight years later after resettled families suffered from radiation exposure. The science is not abstract here. It is personal. It is human. It has real consequences.

    Stop 3: Rongelap — setting for Project 4.1

    The Rainbow Warrior arrived at the eastern side of Rongelap atoll, anchoring one mile from the centre of Rongelap Island, the church spire and roofs of “new” buildings reflecting the bright sun.

    n 1954, fallout from the Castle Bravo nuclear detonation on Bikini blanketed this atoll in radioactive ash — fine, white powder that children played in, thinking it was snow. The US government waited three days to evacuate residents, despite knowing the risks. The US government declared it safe to return to Rongelap in 1957 — but it was a severely contaminated environment. The very significant radiation exposure to the Rongelap population caused severe health impacts: thyroid cancers, birth defects such as “jellyfish babies”, miscarriages, and much more.

    In 1985, after a request to the US government to evacuate was dismissed, the Rongelap community asked Greenpeace to help relocate them from their ancestral lands. Using the first Rainbow Warrior, and over a period of 10 days and four trips, 350 residents collectively dismantled their homes, bringing everything with them — including livestock, and 100 metric tons of building material — where they resettled on the islands of Mejatto and Ebeye on Kwajalein atoll.

    It is a part of history that lives on in the minds of the Marshallese people we meet in this ship voyage — in the gratitude they still express, the pride in keeping the fight for justice, and in the pain of still not having a permanent, safe home.

    Now, once again, we are standing on their island of Rongelap, walking past abandoned buildings and rusting equipment, some of it dating from the 1980s and 1990s — a period when the US Department of Energy launched a push to encourage resettlement declaring that the island was safe — a declaration that this time, the population welcomed with mistrust, not having access to independent scientific data and remembering the deceitful relocation of some decades before.

    Here, once again, we sample soil and fruits that could become food if people came back. It is essential to understand ongoing risks — especially for communities considering whether and how to return.

    This is not the end. It is just the beginning

    Our scientific mission is to take measurements, collect samples, and document contamination. But that’s not all we’re bringing back.

    We carry with us the voices of the Marshallese who survived these tests and are still living with their consequences. We carry images of graves swallowed by tides near Runit Dome, stories of entire cultures displaced from their homelands, and measurements of radiation showing contamination still persists after many decades.

    There are 9700 nuclear warheads still held by military powers around the world – mostly in the United States and Russian arsenals. The Marshall Islands was one of the first nations to suffer the consequences of nuclear weapons — and the legacy persists today.

    We didn’t come to speak for the Marshallese. We came to listen, to bear witness, and to support their demand for justice. We plan to return next year, to follow up on our research and to make results available to the people of the Marshall Islands.

    And we will keep telling these stories — until justice is more than just a word.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Southern District charges over 300 individuals in border security-related cases this week

    HOUSTON – A total of 300 cases have been filed charging 302 people from May 2-8 in continuing efforts to secure the southern border, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. 

    As part of the cases, 93 face allegations of illegally reentering the country. The majority have prior felony convictions for narcotics, prior immigration crimes and more. A total of 193 people face charges of illegally entering the country, while 11 cases allege various instances of human smuggling with the remainder involving other immigration-related crimes.  

    Those charged by criminal complaint include two convicted felons authorities had allegedly discovered illegally in the country near Roma. Milton Elias Lara-Lara and Alejandro Tamayo-Velazquez have convictions related to fentanyl and marijuana, respectively, and had previously been removed from the United States, according to their charges.  

    Two more charged this week for unlawfully returning to the United States are Marco Antonio Rangel-Hernandez and Jose Guadalupe Valero-Lavanzate. The charges against them allege both are Mexican nationals who had previously served sentences for illegal reentry.

    As part of the ongoing efforts, others have also admitted they failed to register and be fingerprinted. One of those was Elver Emmanual Ollervidez-Tapia. He admitted he had previously waded across the Rio Grande River and illegally entered the country. Upon arrival, he failed to register and be fingerprinted as required by law. He was charged with that crime and for illegally entering the country and has pleaded guilty.

    In addition to the new cases, a five-time DUI illegal alien offender was ordered to federal prison for 70 months. In imposing the term of imprisonment, the court considered the dangerousness of Isidor Lagunas-Estrada’s crimes, his lack of respect for the law and need for deterrence. Lagunas-Estrada was removed from the United States in 2020 following his fourth DUI conviction. The investigation revealed he illegally reentered again and was found in the United States in October 2022 when he was arrested and later convicted for his fifth DUI.   

    Also announced was an illegal alien who had allegedly attempted to export stolen vehicles for the cartel. Authorities found Angel David Salas-Herrera in a stolen jeep Gladiator, according to the charges. A search allegedly resulted in the discovery of multiple key fobs and a device utilized to program them. The charges allege the Gladiator was intended to be exported to Mexico for the Gulf Cartel. Law enforcement was also able to recover two additional stolen vehicles that were allegedly intended for the same purpose. If convicted, Salas-Herrera faces up to 10 years in federal prison.

    In Brownsville, an armed repeat illegal alien admitted to human smuggling and firearms charges. The investigation revealed Alejandro Ramirez-Carranza was a river guide and had conspired with Issac Azuara-Vasquez to transport and smuggle illegal aliens in the bed of a truck after they illegally arrived from Mexico via boat on the Rio Grande River. Ramirez-Carranza, Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, admitted to transporting and bringing an alien into the United States as well as illegal reentry and being an alien in possession of a firearm. Mexican citizen Azuara-Vasquez entered his plea April 10 to the same smuggling-related charges as well as selling a firearm to Ramirez-Carranza, an illegal alien.

    These cases were referred or supported by federal law enforcement partners, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) – Homeland Security Investigations, ICE – Enforcement and Removal Operations, Border Patrol, Drug Enforcement Administration, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with additional assistance from state and local law enforcement partners.

    The cases are part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.

    Under current leadership, public safety and a secure border are the top priorities for the Southern District of Texas (SDTX). Enhanced enforcement both at the border and in the interior of the district have yielded aliens engaged in unlawful activity or with serious criminal history, including human trafficking, sexual assault and violence against children. 

    The SDTX remains one of the busiest in the nation. It represents 43 counties and more than nine million people covering 44,000 square miles. Assistant U.S. Attorneys from all seven divisions including Houston, Galveston, Victoria, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, McAllen and Laredo work directly with our law enforcement partners on the federal, state and local levels to prosecute the suspected offenders of these and other federal crimes. 

    An indictment or criminal complaint is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Round Rock Man Pleads Guilty to Trafficking and Unlicensed Dealing of Firearms

    SAN ANTONIO – A Round Rock man pleaded guilty in a federal court in San Antonio today to one count of conspiracy to traffic firearms and one count of dealing in firearms without a license.

    According to court documents, Job Eliezer De La Torre, 50, was engaged in the business of dealing in firearms without a license from Jan. 1, 2020 to Nov. 1, 2023. During that time, he purchased approximately 356 firearms for resale, approximately 24 of which were recovered by law enforcement. Approximately 12 of those 24 were recovered in Mexico. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives executed a search warrant on De La Torre’s Round Rock residence on Nov. 2, 2023, seizing his cell phone, 44 firearms, more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, ledgers of sales for firearms, $26,000 in cash, as well as precious metals. De La Torre stated he advertised guns for sale online and made between $20 and $200 in profit per firearm sold.

    Messages on his phone reflected his business dealings. From May to September 2023 alone, De La Torre sold approximately 50 firearms for $196,850 to one co-conspirator. The deal included AR-15 5.56 caliber firearms, six AR-10 .308 caliber firearms, an AK pistol, an FN SCAR 17S rifle, and FightLite MCR builds.

    De La Torre faces up to 15 years in federal prison for the conspiracy offense and up to five years for dealing in firearms without a license. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

    Acting U.S. Attorney Margaret Leachman for the Western District of Texas made the announcement.

    The ATF and Homeland Security Investigations are investigating the case.

    Assistant U.S. Attorney William Calve is prosecuting the case.

    This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.     Washington (May 8, 2025) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) joined Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Kevin Mullin (D-CA) along with 20 members of the Senate and 27 members of the House in calling on Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought to reverse plans to eliminate the bipartisan, independent Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The CPSC is the only government entity tasked with developing and enforcing product safety standards, facilitating recalls of unsafe products, and educating consumers and businesses about product hazards and best practices. The proposal to absorb some of CPSC’s core functions into a nonexistent division within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as HHS’ budget is being cut, is unrealistic and threatens public safety.
    “Since its inception, the CPSC has played a vital role safeguarding American families, and in particular infants, children, and older Americans. Thanks to the CPSC’s critical work, residential fires and fire-related deaths have decreased by over 40 percent. Crib deaths and child poisonings have dropped by 80 percent. The Commission’s work continues today, identifying emerging threats and protecting Americans from dangerous and banned imported products,” the Members wrote.
    The Members continued, “With the rapid growth of e-commerce and imported consumer products, especially from countries with less stringent safety regulations, CPSC plays a critical role to prevent unsafe and counterfeit goods from entering the U.S. market unchecked.”
    “We strongly oppose any attempt to eliminate, defund, or weaken the CPSC and demand that you immediately roll back any efforts to dissolve the agency. Americans rightfully expect that the products they bring into their home are safe, and only the CPSC has the authority and expertise to ensure that expectation is met,” the Members concluded.
    The letter comes as more than 150 consumer protection and trade groups warned that eliminating the CPSC would undermine product safety, weaken enforcement actions, consumer education campaigns, and data collection initiatives that protect Americans.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Charges – Firearm offences discovered after aggravated assault incident

    NT Police Regional Crime Command has charged a 34-year-old male after he assaulted a man and was found in possession of an illegally manufactured firearm.

    On 6 May, police received reports of a male physically assaulting another male and threatening him with a knife in relation to an ongoing altercation between the pair.

    The following day, police conducted a random traffic apprehension on a vehicle belonging to the alleged offender and he returned a positive roadside drug test. He was also in possession of a less than Traffickable quantity of a schedule 2 dangerous drug.

    Police conducted searches on several dwellings at the alleged offender’s property and subsequently seized ammunition and a disassembled firearm. The male he has since been charged with:

    • Aggravated Assault
    • Driver with Prohibited Drug in Body
    • Possess / Use firearm whilst unlicensed
    • Unlawfully manufacture firearm
    • Possess or use prohibited firearm
    • Possess less than traffickable schedule 2 dangerous drug
    • Possess ammunition without a permit/license
    • Failure to meet storage requirements x2
    • Possess unregistered firearm
    • Unlawfully modify or repair firearm

    He was remanded to appear in Tennant Creek Local Court on Monday 12 May 2025.

  • MIL-OSI USA News: Keeping Promises to Veterans and Establishing a National Center for Warrior Independence

    By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:

    Section 1.  Purpose and Policy.  Our Nation’s security, prosperity, and freedom would not be possible without our veterans.  Many service members paid the ultimate sacrifice.  Many others bear visible and invisible wounds from their service.  Too many veterans are homeless in America.  Each veteran deserves our gratitude.

    Yet the Federal Government has not always treated veterans like the heroes they are.  During the previous administration, unaccountable bureaucrats treated them shamefully, failing veterans when they needed help most and betraying the taxpayers who rightfully expect better.

    The story of the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center is indicative of this failure.  More than one hundred years ago, Senator John Percival Jones and Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker generously donated hundreds of acres of land that they owned in West Los Angeles on the condition that it be used to house disabled veterans.  The campus once featured a chapel, billiard hall, 1,000-seat theater, and housed about 6,000 veterans, but the Federal Government has since allowed this crown jewel of veteran care to deteriorate over the last few decades.  

    The Department of Veterans Affairs (Department) leased parts of the property to a private school, private companies, and the baseball team of the University of California, Los Angeles, sometimes at significantly below-market prices.  As of 2024, there were approximately 3,000 homeless veterans in Los Angeles, more than in any other city in the country and accounting for about 10 percent of all of America’s homeless veterans.  Many of these heroes live in squalor in Los Angeles’s infamous “skid row.”

    During my first term, I signed legislation to increase accountability and expand benefits and choices for veterans in accessing care, and my second term will build on those efforts.  Accountability will return to the Department.  Veterans around the Nation will have more choices in care, benefits, and services.  The VA campus in West Los Angeles will become the National Center for Warrior Independence with facilities and resources to help our veterans earn back their self-sufficiency.

    Sec. 2.  Establishing the National Center for Warrior Independence.  The Secretary of Veterans Affairs (Secretary) shall take all appropriate action to:

    (a)  designate a National Center for Warrior Independence on the West Los Angeles VA Campus in which homeless veterans in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and around the Nation can seek and receive the care, benefits, and services to which they are entitled;

    (b)  work with other municipalities and VA facilities to ensure that homeless veterans outside the Los Angeles metropolitan area who want to avail themselves of the National Center for Warrior Independence are provided the means to do so;

    (c)  in coordination with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and the heads of any other relevant executive departments or agencies, ensure that funds that may have been spent on housing or other services for illegal aliens are redirected to construct, establish, and maintain this National Center for Warrior Independence;

    (d)  work to restore self-sufficiency and the warrior ethos among homeless veterans through any guidance, requirements, or services needed to ensure that homeless veterans can access housing, receive substance abuse or addiction treatment, and return to productive work and community engagement; and

    (e)  within 120 days of the date of this order, present an action plan to the President, through the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, to meet these directives and restore the capacity to house up to 6,000 homeless veterans at the National Center for Warrior Independence by January 1, 2028.

    Sec. 3.  Voucher Program.  The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development shall, in consultation with the Secretary, use vouchers to support homeless veterans in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and around the Nation with respect to this effort.

    Sec. 4.  Restoring Accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs.  The Secretary shall take the following steps to restore accountability and excellent service at the Department:

    (a)  take appropriate action against individuals who have committed misconduct, making full use of and in accordance with the Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017 (Public Law 115-41); and

    (b)  investigate and take steps to rectify the previous administration’s decision to rehire and reinstate back pay for employees previously fired for misconduct and direct such savings back toward care, benefits, and services for veterans, in accordance with all applicable laws.

    Sec. 5.  Providing Choices and Excellence to Veterans.  The Secretary shall take steps to increase the excellence of and options for care, benefits, and services for veterans including:

    (a)  within 60 days of the date of this order, submitting a report to the President, through the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, with a plan to reduce wait times for Veterans Health Administration appointments that explores options like expanding office hours, offering weekend appointments, and increasing the use of virtual healthcare options;

    (b)  within 30 days of the date of this order, directing a feasibility study at the Manchester VA Medical Center and within 180 days of this order, submitting to the President, through the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, an action plan to expand services to support a full-service medical center in New Hampshire so that it is no longer the only State in the contiguous United States without such a center; and

    (c)  in consultation with the Secretary of Defense, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, developing a strategy to improve the delivery and quality of the Department’s healthcare services in a more efficient and effective manner to support veterans; the strategy shall initially prioritize implementation of actions to reduce access times and improve service delivery, to include options for offering treatment to veterans at select military treatment facilities and military beneficiaries at VA facilities with appropriate reimbursement.

    Sec. 6.  General Provisions.  (a)  Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:

    (i)   the authority granted by law to an executive department, agency, or the head thereof; or

    (ii)  the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.

    (b)  This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.

    (c)  This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

    (d)  The Department of Veterans Affairs shall provide funding for this order’s publication in the Federal Register.

    WASHINGTON – After President Trump signed an executive order to provide better care to Veterans, improve accountability for such care, and establish a National Center for Warrior Independence for homeless Veterans, Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins released the following statement:

    “Under President Trump, VA is implementing a host of important reforms to improve care and benefits for our nation’s heroes,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “This executive order builds on the progress we’ve made so far and puts us on a path to fixing some of the department’s most vexing problems.

    “After decades of mismanagement, VA has been leasing parts of its 388-acre West Los Angeles VA Medical Center campus to a wealthy and exclusive private school and the University of California, Los Angeles, baseball team. Today’s executive order will enable us to ensure VA’s West Los Angeles Campus is being used as intended: to benefit Veterans. Our goal is to turn the campus into a beacon of hope and a destination for homeless Veterans from across the nation who can travel there to find housing and support and start their journey back to self-sufficiency.

    “Under President Biden, VA failed to hold its employees properly accountable and actively fought congressional attempts to make it easier to fire poor-performing workers – even as health care wait times and benefits backlogs increased. With this executive order, VA will become the most accountable agency in the entire federal government. We’re going to celebrate the vast majority of VA employees who do a great job every day, hold employees accountable when they fall short of the mission and work to fix the wait-time and backlog issues that developed during the Biden Administration.

    “New Hampshire is the only state in the contiguous United States without a full-service VA medical center. In response to this executive order, we will develop a plan to ensure that is no longer the case.”

    KEEPING OUR PROMISE TO OUR VETERANS: Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order to provide better care to our veterans, improve accountability for such care, and establish a National Center for Warrior Independence for homeless veterans.

    • The Order directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to establish the National Center for Warrior Independence on the Veterans Affairs West Los Angeles Campus.
      • Homeless veterans in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and around the nation can avail themselves of this Center to seek and receive the care, benefits, and services to which they are entitled.
      • Funds previously spent on housing or other services for illegal aliens will be redirected to construct, establish, and maintain this Center.
      • The Center will promote self-sufficiency through housing, substance abuse treatment, and support for productive work for the veterans housed there.
      • The goal is to house up to 6,000 homeless veterans at this Center by 2028.
    • The Order directs the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to use vouchers to support homeless veterans with respect to this effort.
    • It instructs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to restore accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This includes taking action against individuals who have committed misconduct and investigating and rectifying the previous administration’s decision to rehire and reinstate back pay for employees previously fired for misconduct.
    • The Order ensures that veterans will have access to increased options for care, benefits, and services.

    CONTINUING A RECORD OF REFORM: This Executive Order builds on the historic reforms and achievements of President Trump’s first term, which transformed the Department of Veterans Affairs and expanded care and opportunities for our nation’s heroes.

    • During President Trump’s first term, he signed legislation to increase accountability and expand benefits and choices for veterans in accessing care.
    • He also signed legislation to remove thousands of VA workers who failed to give our vets the care they so richly deserve.
    • President Trump improved the efficiency of the VA and modernized medical records.
    • President Trump signed and implemented the Forever GI bill, allowing veterans to use their benefits to get an education at any point in their lives.
    • He eliminated every penny of federal student loan debt owed by American veterans who are completely and permanently disabled.

    STOPPING INVASIVE CARP: Today, President Donald J. Trump signed a presidential memorandum to protect the Great Lakes from invasive carp.

    • The memorandum directs his administration to expeditiously implement the most effective mechanisms, barriers, and other measures to prevent the migration and expansion of invasive carp in the Great Lakes Basin and the surrounding region.
    • It supports construction of the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, which would provide multiple layers of innovative technological deterrents designed to prevent invasive carp from reaching the Great Lakes, provided that the states involved are willing to cooperate and meet deadlines so that the federal investment pays off and the project can be completed in a timely, effective fashion.  This project was authorized in the Water Resources Development Act of 2020 but has recently been delayed by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.
      • It sets a deadline of July 1, 2025, for Illinois to acquire necessary land to begin construction and 30-day deadlines for local permits to be granted to facilitate Army Corps construction.
      • Federal agencies are similarly directed to streamline their permitting and environmental reviews.
    • It instructs the Environmental Protection Agency to prioritize infrastructure projects to remove invasive carp from the Upper Illinois Waterway near Lake Michigan and maintain existing barriers to prevent their entry into the Great Lakes Basin.
    • It tasks NOAA and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to prioritize research and management for the prevention, removal, and control of invasive carp and other aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes.

    PROTECTING THE GREAT LAKES: President Trump understands that swift action is essential to safeguard the Great Lakes from the growing threat of invasive carp.

    • The Great Lakes are the world’s largest surface freshwater system, and a highly valued shipping avenue, resource for fishing and recreation, and source of high-quality drinking water.
    • For several decades, invasive species of Asian carp have steadily migrated and expanded from the Southeast northward through streams, rivers, and lakes, nearing the Great Lakes entry point.
    • Asian carp, which can exceed 100 pounds in weight, spread rapidly by outcompeting native fish populations for food and space, threatening species like walleye, yellow perch, and lake whitefish.
    • Their potential entry into the Great Lakes would irreparably damage fishing, boating, recreation, and tourism, which supports tens of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in commerce annually.
    • Immediate action is needed as the Federal Government has already invested $274 million in the Brandon Road project, but Illinois’ recent delays in land acquisition and permitting threaten this critical defense against an ecological and economic disaster.

    SAFEGUARDING AMERICA’S NATURAL ABUNDANCE: President Trump has consistently demonstrated a commonsense dedication to protecting America’s natural resources, environment, and outdoor recreation areas.

    • President Trump has championed improved forest management in order to prevent forest fires that are devastating communities and ecosystems across the country.

    BALTIMORE — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 38-year-old criminal alien Joel Armando Mejia-Benitez, a Salvadoran national, May 5 in Silver Spring. Mejia is a validated MS-13 gang member and is wanted in his home country for firearms offenses.

    “The arrest of this violent MS-13 gang member is a critical step in our ongoing mission to safeguard our communities,” said ICE Baltimore acting Field Office Director Nikita Baker. “We remain steadfast in prioritizing public safety and protecting national security by targeting and removing dangerous criminal aliens who threaten the well-being of our Maryland residents.”

    The U.S. Border Patrol apprehended Mejia near Sullivan City, Texas, Nov. 22, 2004, and served him a notice to appear. A Department of Justice immigration judge ordered Mejia removed in absentia Dec. 14, 2005.

    ICE Baltimore arrested Mejia from Prince George’s County Detention Center Sept. 28, 2006. ICE removed Mejia from the United States to El Salvador Dec. 13, 2006.

    Mejia reentered the United States on an unknown date at an unknown location without being inspected, admitted or paroled by an immigration officer. ICE Baltimore arrested Mejia and served him a notice of intent to reinstate prior order March 20, 2014.

    Mejia has a final order of removal and will remain in ICE custody.

    . Pillen Extends Burn Ban in Central, Western Nebraska

     LINCOLN, NE – Governor Jim Pillen signed an executive order extending a burn ban due to continued dry conditions in the central and western regions of Nebraska. The new order remains in effect until midnight May 20.

    The burn ban applies to a wide swath of the state to help mitigate risks associated with potential grassland fires. The border runs south along U.S. Highway 81 from the South Dakota border to Highway 92. The line then goes west to U.S. Highway 281 and runs south to the Kansas border.

    Last week, Gov. Pillen revised the burn ban to allow fire chiefs discretion in granting burn permits to irrigation districts so that they can continue to clear vegetation from ditches. These exceptions still apply. However, under no circumstances are burns to be authorized in any area when the National Weather Service (NWS) issues a red flag warning.

    OAKLAND — California Attorney General Rob Bonta today joined 18 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief supporting the constitutionality of New York’s restrictions against carrying firearms in public parks in the case, Christian v. James. In the brief, the attorneys general urge the Second Circuit to uphold the district court’s decision that New York’s prohibition on carrying firearms in public parks does not violate the Second Amendment. The brief argues that the law is in line with a long tradition of constitutionally acceptable regulations designed to meet states’ responsibility to protect their residents from gun violence and intimidation.

    “It is commonsense that guns do not belong where our children and families are playing,” said Attorney General Bonta. “States have the responsibility for protecting their communities. Our citizens should not have to live in fear of gun violence. Under Bruen, the Supreme Court acknowledged that states have a right to enact reasonable restrictions to protect communities. We support and recognize states’ authority to enact laws to maintain public safety, including constitutional gun regulations that respond to local needs and concerns.”
     
    The attorneys general argue in the brief that the challenged provisions are consistent with a tradition of constitutionally acceptable regulations designed to meet states’ need to protect their residents and the public safety of communities. These regulations are common and a method of ensuring adequate protection and safety for locations that have become increasingly vulnerable to gun violence in recent years. Imposing location-based restrictions on carrying guns does not conflict with the Second Amendment, allowing states to have flexibility that they need to protect their communities.
     
    In filing the brief, Attorney General Bonta joins the attorneys general of Illinois, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and District of Columbia.

    Washington, D.C. – In a new bipartisan letter, U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Jim Banks (R-Ind.) applauded the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) ongoing investigation into potential anticompetitive practices by major egg producers and urged the agency to continue its thorough investigation as egg prices continue to rise.
    “Large egg producers and trade associations have previously been found liable for price fixing,” wrote the senators. “Given this history, we urge DOJ to thoroughly review whether recent trends in egg prices reflect impermissible coordination among egg producers and trade associations.”
    The average retail price of a dozen eggs has reached unprecedented levels, surpassing $6 in March 2025, tripling since 2021. While egg producers and trade associations continue to point to recent bird flu outbreaks as the reason for increased prices, large egg producers, like Cal-Maine, are reporting record profitability while families feel economic pain.
    The cost of eggs started to drop from record peaks just after the DOJ announced an investigation into egg prices, raising concerns as to whether large egg producers are engaging in anticompetitive behaviors to raise prices or restrict supply. A federal jury previously found that large egg producers and trade groups increased egg prices by conspiring to artificially limit the supply of hens between 2004 and 2008. Another lawsuit alleges that Cal-Maine inflated egg prices after a 2015 bird flu outbreak and during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
    The five largest egg producers — CalMaine Foods, Rose Acre Farms, Daybreak Foods, Hillendale Farms, and Versova Holdings — control nearly half of the U.S. egg-laying flock, leaving Americans with limited alternatives to purchase eggs if companies are in fact price-gouging consumers.
    The senators requested that the DOJ address their concerns, including if price increases in the egg market can be reasonably explained by bird flu-related supply chain disruptions; how much the five largest egg producers profited during the first three-quarters of fiscal year 2025; if large egg producers’ purchasing patterns potentially reflect an effort to extend the egg supply shortage and maintain high prices; and whether the decline in egg prices following the DOJ’s announcement reflects potential price-fixing among large egg producers.
    “We support DOJ’s investigation into potential anticompetitive behavior by egg producers and urge the agency to consider whether a ‘precipitous drop’ in egg prices just ‘days’ after reports of the investigation broke suggests that egg producers had conspired to artificially inflate prices,” concluded the senators.
    DOJ announced its probe following a January letter Sen. Warren sent to Donald Trump, pressing him to use tools to lower egg prices, including “encouraging DOJ to prosecute actors in the agricultural and food sectors for price-fixing and other anticompetitive behavior.”
    Senators Warren and Banks recently teamed up to open a bipartisan investigation into the harms of private equity roll-ups of fire truck manufacturers. The lawmakers wrote to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), North America’s largest union of firefighters, seeking information about the adverse impact of private equity consolidation on firefighters and communities in Massachusetts, Indiana, and across the country.

    European leaders set to travel to Kyiv as the US, France, Germany, Poland and the UK call for 30-day ceasefire

    The leaders of France, Germany, Poland and the UK will be in Kyiv tomorrow as calls intensify for Russia to agree a ceasefire and come to the negotiating table.

    The leaders of France, Germany, Poland and the UK will be in Kyiv tomorrow as calls intensify for Russia to agree a ceasefire and come to the negotiating table.

    President Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Prime Minister Keir Starmer are expected to meet President Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Saturday morning, underlining their steadfast commitment to Ukraine.

    The historic visit, which is the first time the leaders of the four countries have travelled together to Ukraine – and Chancellor Merz’ first visit to Ukraine as Germany’s new Chancellor – comes as they and President Trump call for Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire to allow for unfettered peace talks.

    In a joint statement, the leaders said:

    “We, the leaders of France, Germany, Poland the United Kingdom will stand in Kyiv in solidarity with Ukraine against Russia’s barbaric and illegal full-scale invasion.

    “We reiterate our backing for President Trump’s calls for a peace deal and call on Russia to stop obstructing efforts to secure an enduring peace.

    “Alongside the US, we call on Russia to agree a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire to create the space for talks on a just and lasting peace.

    “We are ready to support peace talks as soon as possible, to discuss technical implementation of the ceasefire, and prepare for a full peace deal. 

    “We are clear the bloodshed must end, Russia must stop its illegal invasion, and Ukraine must be able to prosper as a safe, secure and sovereign nation within its internationally recognised borders for generations to come.

    “We will continue to increase our support for Ukraine. Until Russia agrees to an enduring ceasefire, we will ratchet up pressure on Russia’s war machine.”

    During the visit, the leaders are expected pay their respects to the fallen defenders and casualties of Russia’s war on the Maidan, where flags are placed by Ukrainians to remember those killed.

    Later in the day, the leaders are expected to host a virtual meeting, alongside President Zelenskyy, to update leaders on the progress being made for a future coalition of an air, land, maritime and regeneration force that would help regenerate Ukraine’s armed forces after any peace deal and strengthen confidence in any future peace.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Grayson County felon sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for gun violation

    PLANO, Texas – A Sherman convicted felon has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for a firearms violation in the Eastern District of Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Abe McGlothin, Jr.

    Mouaidad Mohamad, 30, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm was sentenced to 180 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Sean D. Jordan on May 9, 2025.

    According to information presented in court, on August 5, 2022, law enforcement officers responded to a report of shots fired in Sherman.  They discovered that Mohamad had fired two shots from the window of a vehicle before forcing his girlfriend to drive away from the scene.  Mohamad was located later in the day in the same vehicle and taken into custody.  Further investigation revealed Mohamad to be a convicted felon having several state felony convictions including robbery and burglary of a habitation.  As a convicted felon, Mohamad is prohibited by federal law from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition.

    This case was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts.  PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime.  Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.  As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

    This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Sherman Police Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William R. Tatum.

    Michael Rutledge Plotted a Violent Robbery with Co-Conspirators and Drove Getaway Car

    Earlier today, at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn, a federal jury convicted Michael Rutledge on all counts of a superseding indictment charging him with Hobbs Act robbery conspiracy, Hobbs Act robbery, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.  The charges arose from a robbery committed at gunpoint by Rutledge and two co-conspirators on February 10, 2023.  The verdict followed a five-day trial before United States District Judge Frederic Block.  When sentenced, Rutledge faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and up to life in prison.

    Joseph Nocella, Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York; Bryan Miller, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, New York Field Office (ATF); and Jessica S. Tisch, Commissioner, New York City Police Department (NYPD), announced the verdict.

    “Rutledge and his co-conspirators meticulously planned a violent robbery in a neighborhood convenience store in Clinton Hill, during which a customer was brutally pistol-whipped and shot, and a hard-working store clerk was held at knifepoint while thieves lined their pockets with thousands of dollars in cash,” stated United States Attorney Nocella.  “Thanks to exceptional investigative work by the ATF and the NYPD, the defendant was identified, apprehended, and rightly convicted today.”

    This conviction is a testament to the strength of New York City’s law enforcement partnerships and our shared commitment to protecting the public from violent gun crime,” stated ATF Special Agent in Charge Miller.  “The brazen and violent acts committed in this case are unacceptable. Thanks to the tireless work of the ATF/NYPD SPARTA Group (Strategic Pattern Armed Robbery Technical Apprehension), NYPD 88th Precinct Detective Squad and our partners at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District, this defendant has been held accountable and will face the consequences of his actions. We will remain relentless in our efforts to identify, investigate, and stop those who use illegal firearms to terrorize people in our communities.”

    “Michael Rutledge didn’t just act as a getaway driver—he aided and abetted violent criminals who held a store clerk at knifepoint, stole thousands of dollars from his business, and shot an unassuming victim in a targeted attack,” stated NYPD Commissioner  Tisch.  “Today’s guilty verdict holds him accountable for his role in this senseless violence and his attempt to evade justice. We remain committed to working with all of our law enforcement partners to ensure that those who threaten the safety of our communities face the full consequences of their actions.”

    As proven at trial, Rutledge drove co-defendant Angel Gomez and their other co-conspirator (Co-Conspirator) from the Bronx to Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill neighborhood to execute their plan to rob a convenience store on Myrtle Avenue.  Rutledge parked their vehicle while Gomez and Co-Conspirator walked to the store.  Inside, Gomez displayed a gun and Co-Conspirator pulled out a knife, menacing the store worker.  Co-Conspirator then rifled through two cash registers, removing more than $4,000 in cash. Meanwhile, Gomez pointed his gun at a customer, struck the customer in the head repeatedly with the gun, and shot him in the hip.  The robbery duo fled back to the meet-up location where Rutledge was waiting to drive them away.

    Rutledge was apprehended on June 21, 2023 after law enforcement executed a search warrant at an address in the Bronx where he was staying and where he fled after completing the robbery.  They recovered the clothing he wore on the night of the robbery.

    On February 12, 2025, Gomez pleaded guilty to Hobbs Act Robbery and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.  Gomez is awaiting sentencing.  Co-Conspirator remains at large.

    The government’s case is being handled by the Office’s General Crimes Section.  Assistant United States Attorneys James R. Simmons and Vincent M. Chiappini are in charge of the prosecution with the assistance of Paralegal Specialist Matias Burdman and Criminal Investigations Unit Intelligence Research Specialist Ashley Hinkson.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Laurel man sentenced to 3 years in prison for possessing stolen firearm after breaking into law enforcement vehicles

    BILLINGS – A Laurel man who broke into law enforcement vehicles and possessed a stolen firearm was sentenced today to 36 months in prison to be followed by3 years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme said.

    Jacob Charles Berger, 28, pleaded guilty in December 2024 to possession of a stolen firearm.

    U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters presided.

    The government alleged in court documents that beginning on March 5, 2024, and continuing until March 15, 2024, an unknown male vandalized five different law enforcement vehicles. The suspect stole multiple items from inside the vehicles, including medical kits; body armor; and, on one occasion, a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition. The Billings Police Department began investigating the thefts.

    Law enforcement officers obtained home surveillance footage from one of the thefts which showed the suspect was wearing black “skater” shoes and was riding a black and red bicycle with skinny tires. The bicycle appeared to have been wrapped in black electrical tape. Investigators recovered the bicycle on March 15, and processed it for fingerprints. Three latent fingerprints on the bicycle were identified as Berger’s.

    On March 20, 2024, law enforcement arrested Berger on an unrelated warrant. He admitted to breaking into police vehicles and taking body armor, medical supplies, and a shotgun. Investigators searched Berger’s garage and seized the shotgun, as well as eight other firearms that had been reported stolen between July 2023 and March 2024. They also located the medical kits and body armor Berger stole from the police vehicles.

    Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Yerger prosecuted the case, and the investigation was conducted by the ATF and Billings Police Department.

    This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.     Dear President Trump: 
    We write to express serious concern regarding your intention to fire the three Democratic Commissioners from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This move compromises the ability of the federal government to apply data-driven product safety rules to protect Americans nationwide, away from political influence. We urge you to immediately reverse this order and allow the three Democratic CPSC Commissioners to continue their work to protect consumers, especially children and families, from hazardous products. 
    Congress established the CPSC in the Consumer Product Safety Act as an independent regulatory commission composed of five bipartisan Commissioners, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Since 1972, the CPSC has regulated the manufacture and sale of products ranging from children’s toys to fireworks, working to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death. In fiscal year 2024 alone, the CPSC negotiated and implemented the recall of 153 million consumer product units and conducted more than 4,100 indepth investigations to remove defective and potentially harmful products from shelves. For over 50 years, the CPSC’s bipartisan commissioners have carried out this critical work to ensure that Americans can feel confident about the safety and reliability of the products they use every day. 
    As at other independent agencies, CPSC Commissioners are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate to staggered, seven-year terms. The Consumer Product Safety Act establishes that the President may remove Commissioners only “for neglect of duty or malfeasance in office but for no other cause.” Further, the Act is explicit about the legal requirement for bipartisanship on the CPSC, mandating that “not more than three of the Commissioners shall be affiliated with the same political party.” These provisions exist to limit the Commissioners’ exposure to political influence, allowing them to focus entirely on their job of protecting American consumers. 
    Despite these clear, congressionally-mandated protections, late on Thursday May 8, you announced your intention to fire the CPSC’s three Democratic Commissioners, Commissioner Hoehn-Saric, Commissioner Trumka, and Commissioner Boyle, without cause. This action degrades the ability of CPSC to establish robust product safety protections and casts doubt on its capacity to pursue recalls and investigations without being influenced by the politics of the day. 
    More than ninety years ago, the Supreme Court ruled that Congress has the authority to create bipartisan, multi-member commissions to serve the public without undue political influence. More recently, in 2020, the Court refused to rule that the President has the power to remove members of bipartisan commissions at-will. As you know, the President can lawfully exercise influence over the Commission by nominating new members and appointing the Chair. This illegal order to terminate three CPSC Commissioners without cause stands in opposition to clear legislative guidelines and nearly a century of Supreme Court precedent. It must be reversed. 
    Commissioners Hoehn-Saric, Trumka, and Boyle must be allowed to continue their work at the CPSC and carry out its vital mission to protect American consumers.

Garbarino (R-NY-02) introduced two key pieces of legislation to support law enforcement officers and reaffirm his commitment to the men and women who serve and protect our communities. The bills—the Law Enforcement Officer Bill of Rights Resolution and the Law Enforcement Officers Equity Act—aim to strengthen protections for officers and ensure fair retirement benefits for federal law enforcement professionals.

    “As we approach Police Week, I’m proud to introduce legislation that supports law enforcement officers both in their service today and in their futures,” said Rep. Garbarino. “Whether it’s affirming their rights on the job or ensuring they receive the benefits they’ve earned, we must continue standing with the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe. Our officers deserve not only our gratitude, but real action—and that’s what these bills deliver.”

    The Law Enforcement Officer Bill of Rights Resolution reaffirms the rights of local law enforcement officers and condemns efforts to defund, dismantle, or disband police departments. The resolution outlines several core protections, including:

    • Local law enforcement officer’s right to self-defense against physical threats
    • Local law enforcement officer’s right to legal recourse if a civilian attempts to assault the local law enforcement officer
    • Local law enforcement officer’s right to be protected from physical harassment
    • Local law enforcement officer’s right to equipment necessary for personal protection
    • Local law enforcement officer’s right to counsel or a representative present at any interview conducted as part of an investigation

    This resolution is supported by the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO), and the Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA) and is cosponsored by Representatives Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY-11), Claudia Tenney (R-NY-24), Mike Lawler (R-NY-17), Nick Langworthy (R-NY-23), Nick LaLota (R-NY-01), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01), Pete Stauber (R-MN-08), Randy Weber (R-TX-14), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL-26), and Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21).

    The Law Enforcement Officers Equity Act, introduced alongside RepresentativesGerry Connolly (D-VA-11) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01), seeks to expand the federal definition of a “law enforcement officer” under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) and Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS). The bill would ensure that qualified federal employees—including IRS officers, VA police, Postal Inspectors, and seized-property specialists—receive the same retirement benefits currently afforded to other law enforcement personnel.

    Specifically, the Law Enforcement Officers’ Equity Act would:

    • Provide federal officers with 6(c) retirement benefits and the ability to retire after 20 years of service at the age of 50, or after 25 years of service at any age
    • Allow incumbent law enforcement officers federal service after the enactment of this Act to be considered service performed as a law enforcement officer for retirement purposes
    • Expand the definition of “law enforcement officer” for retirement benefits to include all GS-0083 officers. That change would grant law enforcement officer status to:
      • employees who are authorized to carry a firearm and whose duties include the investigation and/or apprehension of suspected criminals
      • employees of the Internal Revenue Service whose duties are primarily the collection of delinquent taxes and securing delinquent returns
      • employees of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs who are department police officers

    Rep. Garbarino has consistently championed legislation that supports law enforcement and their families and has worked to ensure officers receive the resources, respect, and recognition they’ve earned.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Reed: Trump’s Disgraceful Firing of Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden Illustrates Trump’s Efforts to Control Information and Politicize Civil Service

    WASHINGTON, DC — Last night, President Trump abruptly fired the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla D. Hayden, who was nominated by former President Barrack Obama and confirmed with 74 votes by the U.S. Senate in 2016.  Dr. Hayden was the first woman, the first professional librarian, and the first Black person to lead the Library of Congress (LOC). 

    There is nothing political about the LOC, America’s oldest government-run cultural institution and the largest library in the world, which only rarely gets a new leader and Dr. Hayden was just the 14th head of the LOC since 1800.  Dr. Hayden won bipartisan accolades for modernizing the Library of Congress and making it more accessible with initiatives targeted to rural communities and online access.

    The Trump Administration, which has supported book bans and sought to remove the works of Black authors such as Maya Angelou and historical texts about civil rights and the holocaust from library shelves, apparently gave in to right-wing groups who wanted Dr. Hayden fired on the grounds she is allegedly “woke.”

    U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), a leading champion of libraries who brought Dr. Hayden to Rhode Island in 2019 to host a Veterans History Project event at the Cranston Library, condemned her firing, stating:

    “Dr. Hayden did an outstanding job leading the Library of Congress and her abrupt firing is totally unjustified.  A dedicated leader and public servant, Dr. Hayden performed her duties with honor, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring America’s treasured collection of books, knowledge, and information is digitized and accessible to all.  She ensured the Library of Congress served as a trusted source of information for all.  That is the opposite of what the Trump Administration wants: it wants to politicize the library, control information, and get rid of independent civil servants — replacing them with partisan right-wing extremists who will be subservient to Donald Trump, not the Constitution or the institution and the American people.

    “Libraries are public resources that welcome everyone.  They serve individuals and benefit communities and our democracy.  This is part of Trump’s continued war on libraries: cutting funding, banning books, and removing, blocking, and trying to restrict public access to information on a range of topics.

    “The right-wing conservative mob who has President Trump’s ear seemingly couldn’t stand to have a strong leader in charge of our nation’s library for one more day.  They made a grave error.  While Dr. Hayden was the first Black woman to lead the Library of Congress, she will not be the last.  She will continue to inspire and has blazed a trail for others to follow.”
