  • MIL-OSI Russia: Finches and thrushes began singing in the capital’s natural areas

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

With the arrival of warm weather, you can hear birds singing in the natural areas of the capital. In parks, squares and even in courtyards, you can hear the ringing trills of finches, thrushes, robins, warblers and other feathered inhabitants.

Capital specialists Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection reminder: from April 1, a silence regime has been established in natural areas, which will last until July 31. It is necessary to create favorable conditions during the breeding season of animals and birds.

“When near a nest, do not make loud sounds, turn on music, make noise or approach the birds, and also do not walk dogs without a short leash and muzzle. Compliance with these simple rules allows us to maintain the stability of populations and support biodiversity in the city,” the capital’s Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection said.

    Natural cacophony

The most sonorous and varied songs at this time are those of finches and thrushes. Male finches perform melodic trills to attract females and inform rivals that the territory is already occupied. The concerts of thrushes, especially the song and black thrush, can be recognized by a series of whistling and flute-like phrases with pauses. The robin produces characteristic gentle trills, often heard at dawn and dusk and reminiscent of a quiet stream. Warblers sing simply and rhythmically – with short, repeating sounds that are easily recognizable in the silence, and warblers perform a fast and energetic song with a variety of chirping and whistling elements.

It is in the spring that birds are most vulnerable: at this time they build nests, lay eggs, hatch offspring and feed chicks. Any loud noise, the approach of a person or a pet can provoke anxiety and force the bird to leave the nest. In such cases, the chicks risk being left without parental warmth and food. Species that build nests on the ground or in low vegetation are especially sensitive to external factors, so it is important to remain quiet and not disturb the birds.

One of the important tasks of the Moscow Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection is to help wild animals that find themselves in difficult situations. Biologists remind: if you encounter injured animals or birds that need specialized medical care, you should immediately contact the Moscow Government’s unified information service by phone: 7 495 777-77-77.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: The capital plant presented an innovative cable for industrial automation systems

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

The Moscow plant, which has the status of an industrial complex, was the first in Russia to introduce an innovative cable for the Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) data transmission standard. Thanks to the active support of the city, the capital’s enterprises are expanding their product line and increasing the volume of production of cable and wire products. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry Maxim Liksutov.

Today, SPE technology is becoming more relevant in the field of industrial automation due to its simplicity and lighter weight, greater compactness and reduced installation time. One cable can provide simultaneous power supply and data transmission between different devices.

“On the instructions of Sergei Sobyanin, the city is actively increasing the potential of the cable and wire industry. This allows us to regularly increase the output of in-demand products – according to the results of the first two months of 2025, the volume of cable production in the capital increased by 18 percent. Moscow develops and brings to market science-intensive and high-tech solutions, strengthening the country’s technological leadership. Thus, the capital’s industrial complex presented a unique product for industrial automation systems. It will go into serial production this year,” said Maxim Liksutov.

Unlike the traditional interface, the new product has improved performance characteristics, including increased resistance to mechanical impacts and extreme temperatures, and supports data transfer at speeds of up to 10 megabits per second. This simplifies the creation of industrial automation systems and eliminates the need for additional converters.

“Cable and wire products in the capital are manufactured by about 20 enterprises, employing about three thousand specialists. Such products are needed in the construction, metallurgy, petrochemical, aviation, space, shipbuilding and many other industries. The new solution of the cable plant will find its application in the automotive industry and in modern machine tool manufacturing,” emphasized the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the capital’s Department of Investment and Industrial Policy

    Anatoly Garbuzov.

In order to integrate heterogeneous network segments, it was previously necessary to use gateways to convert protocols, which complicated the creation of complex building automation systems. New cables allow direct connection of end devices, ensuring ease of maintenance, accessibility to control systems and a high degree of compatibility between different subsystems.

The representative of the developer company noted that the plant produces innovative products that may not be relevant today, but will become necessary for production in the future. This approach allows setting new standards of quality and technology and offering customers solutions that are ahead of their time.

Previously The Mayor of Moscow reported, that the plant was the first in Russia to introduce ultra-thin cables for neuro- and cardiac pacemakers. The new products were created as part of the import substitution program, and the enterprise is already preparing for serial production.

Modern infrastructure and support measures: what else helps the capital’s industry grow

  • MIL-OSI Russia: A business complex will be built in the west of the capital under the KRT program

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

In the west of the capital, a 1.21-hectare site will be reorganized under the integrated territorial development program (ITD). This was announced by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Development Policy and Construction Vladimir Efimov.

“Over the course of five years, the operator appointed by the capital will reorganize a 1.21-hectare site at 8 Neverovskogo Street. It is planned to create a modern business space here. Investments in the project are estimated at approximately 19 billion rubles, and the annual budget effect will exceed 668 million rubles. Thanks to the redevelopment of the site in the Dorogomilovo district, 1.6 thousand jobs will be created,” said Vladimir Efimov.

The reorganized area adjoins Bagration Avenue. The Park Pobedy station of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya metro line is located nearby. Currently, the area houses warehouses and other obsolete facilities.

“The urban development potential of the site is 56 thousand square meters of real estate. Thus, it is planned to build a business complex here, where they will house retail facilities, cafes, restaurants, bank branches, as well as offices, sports and medical centers. In addition, it is planned to improve the territory and organize a local street and road network,” said the Minister of the Moscow Government, Head of the Department of City Property

    Maxim Gaman.

Earlier, the Mayor of Moscow reported that there was a decision has been made on the integrated development of non-residential areas in the west of the capital.

According to the program of integrated development of territories, multifunctional city blocks are created, where roads, comfortable housing and all necessary infrastructure are designed on the site of former industrial zones and inefficiently used areas. Currently, 302 KRT projects with a total area of about 4.2 thousand hectares are at various stages of implementation in Moscow. The work is underway on behalf of Sergei Sobyanin.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Election Diary: for a few hours, it seemed possible the Russians might be coming

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Michelle Grattan, Professorial Fellow, University of Canberra

For a few hours on Tuesday afternoon, it seemed just possible the Russians might be sending their planes to a base very near us.

A claim on the military and intelligence site Janes that said the Russians were seeking to base several long range aircraft in Papua, a province of Indonesia, caused a massive flurry on the election trail.

It gave heart to Opposition Leader Peter Dutton that national security might be brought into play as an election issue.

Dutton was quick to recall how in 2022 the Labor opposition jumped on the Morrison government for apparently being caught by surprise at what was going on in the Pacific, when a security agreement between China and the Solomon Islands turned into a campaign issue.

Had the Albanese government been caught unawares?

The Janes report said: “Jakarta has received an official request from Moscow, seeking permission for Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) aircraft to be based at a facility in Indonesia’s easternmost province.

“Separate sources from the Indonesian government have confirmed with Janes that the request was received by the office of Minister of Defence Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin following his meeting with Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu in February 2025.

“In the request, Russia seeks to base several long-range aircraft at the Manuhua Air Force Base, which shares a runway with the Frans Kaisiepo Airport, documents that have been presented to Janes reveal.

“The airbase is situated in Biak Numfor in the Indonesian province of Papua, and it is home to the Indonesian Air Force’s Aviation Squadron 27, which operates a fleet of CN235 surveillance aircraft.”

The government sought urgent clarification, while Dutton – now struggling in the polls – sought to score a quick political point without waiting for confirmation. Both government and opposition agreed on one thing, however: nobody wanted to see the Russians get such a foothold.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “We are seeking further information, we obviously do not want to see Russian influence in our region, very clearly.”

“We have a good relationship with our friends in Indonesia, and we’re seeking further clarification.”

Dutton said it would be “a catastrophic failure of diplomatic relations if Penny Wong and Anthony Albanese didn’t have forewarning” about such a Russian move before it was made public.

“This is a very, very troubling development. The prime minister and the foreign affairs minister should have the depth of relationship with Indonesia to have had forewarning of this,” Dutton said.

“My message to President Putin is that he’s not welcome in our neighbourhood. We don’t share any values with President Putin, and we do not want a presence, a military presence, from Russia in our region, which would be destabilising for south-east Asia.”

Late Tuesday, the air went out of the balloon.

In a statement Defence Minister Richard Marles said, “I have spoken to my counterpart, HE Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin the Minister for Defence, and he has said to me in the clearest possible terms, reports of the prospect of Russian aircraft operating from Indonesia are simply not true”.

Earlier Marles said that last year Australia signed a defence cooperation agreement with Indonesia, “which really is the deepest level defence agreement we’ve ever had with Indonesia”.

“We are seeing increasing cooperation between Australia and Indonesia at a defence level.”

Michelle Grattan does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Students of SPbGASU are winners of the III Leningrad Region Architectural Competition

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering – Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering – Alexandra Polyanskaya and Anastasia Perlina, authors of the winning project “Kirovsk: the bank of the Neva behind the Mayak shopping center”

The III Leningrad Region Architectural Competition for Landscaping among students of specialized universities was a triumph for SPbGASU students: two projects were recognized as winners and four were prize winners. A brilliant result is not only recognition in the profession and at the regional government level, but also a good chance to implement projects: the competition was held by the Leningrad Region Competence Center and the Committee for Housing and Public Utilities of the region with information support from the Committee for Urban Development Policy of the Leningrad Region. The final took place on April 1.

The jury includes government members, experts, and teachers.

At the initial stage of the competition, the participants chose the areas for design and nomination by lot. Then they surveyed the territories, listened to the preferences of local residents in order to make the areas not only beautiful and well-kept, but also comfortable. And only then did they start designing. The finals of the competition included projects by students from our university in three nominations: “Large cities (up to 80 thousand residents)”, “Medium cities (up to 40 thousand residents)” and “Small cities (up to 20 thousand residents)”.

The participants presented their projects to an expert jury, which included Deputy Chairman of the Leningrad Region Government for Construction and Housing and Utilities Evgeny Baranovsky, First Deputy Chairman of the Leningrad Region Urban Development Policy – Chief Architect of the Leningrad Region Sergey Lutchenko, President of the St. Petersburg Union of Architects Vladimir Grigoriev, Deputy Chairman of the Leningrad Region Government Vladimir Tsoi, Chairman of the Leningrad Region Committee for Housing and Utilities Yegor Misheryakov, Director of the Autonomous Non-Commercial Organization “Competence Center of the Leningrad Region” Igor Yurin, Head of the Landscape Architecture Department of St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering Alexander Demin, Associate Professor of the Landscape Architecture Department Nadezhda Kerimova, and representatives of other universities.

    A triumphant victory!

The mentors of our university teams are teachers of the Department of Landscape Architecture Daria Barkeeva and Elena Kutaliya.

In the nomination “Cities up to 20 thousand residents” the second place was taken by the project “Boksitogorsk: Cherry Orchard”. It was worked on by Elizaveta Devyatykh (second year), Alexandra Kutolkina (third year), Ekaterina Renzhina (fourth year), Lyubomila Spiridonova (second year) and Maria Zubova (second year).

The project “Syasstroy: territory on Kosmonavtov Street, 7” was awarded third place. It was completed by Daniil Sinyakov (second year), Polina Tambova (third year) and Polina Ryabova (third year).

The winner in the nomination “Cities from 20 to 40 thousand residents” was the project “Kirovsk: the bank of the Neva behind the TRC “Mayak”. Its authors: Anastasia Perlina (third year), Daria Antipina (third year), Maria Oshchepkova (first year of the master’s program) and Alexandra Polyanskaya (second year of the master’s program).

The project “Kommunar: the territory along the river from the Izhora park “Quiet Harbor”” is in second place. It was developed by Elizaveta Kalashnikova (first-year master’s student), Maria Shirokova (fifth year), Evgeniya Tereshchenko (fourth year), Ekaterina Romanova (fourth year) and Maria Baran (fourth year).

The winner in the nomination “Cities with 40 to 80 thousand residents” was the project “Sosnovy Bor: the territory along Solnechnaya Street, 14”. Its authors: Alexander Khon (first year master’s student), Artem Chernov (second year), Alexander Stulnikov (first year master’s student), Arina Boyko (second year), Ekaterina Shumanskaya (first year master’s student), Anastasia Kurakina (second year) and Nikolay Shavrygin (first year master’s student).

The project “Vyborg: a park near school No. 6” by first-year master’s student Valeria Filimonova was awarded second place.

Identity and comfort according to the wishes of residents

The authors of the winning project “Sosnovy Bor: territory along Solnechnaya St., 14” tried to take into account the wishes of the residents of the house whose courtyard they were designing.

“Residents asked to preserve the existing landscaping as much as possible, increase the number of parking spaces and create separate recreation areas for the elderly and young people. During the inspection of the site, we noticed a large number of large stones. We integrated them into the quiet recreation area, creating a natural atmosphere and preserving the identity of the courtyard,” the winners said.

The winners of the project “Kirovsk: the bank of the Neva behind the Mayak shopping center” consider participation in the competition to be a very interesting and important experience, including in the process of project sessions and communication with residents.

“We had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a fairly detailed design process in a short period of time, right down to finding out the prices for elements and landscaping work, in order to draw up an estimate. That is, we were not just creating some kind of image, but also working out possible implementation. The territory is notable for its relief, in connection with which we proposed interesting solutions, incorporating an amphitheater and various zones into it,” the winners explained.

The winners’ projects will be implemented next year.

According to information posted on the VKontakte page of the Leningrad Region Administration, the works will be presented at the federal vote on the national project “Infrastructure for Life”. The projects supported by residents will be implemented in 2026.

“The improvement projects were developed by students: they walked around the territories in nine cities and met with residents. The work was carried out jointly with architects, urbanists, specialists from the Competence Center and our committee, manufacturers of equipment and materials. We took into account everything: from communications and funding limits to trees, from the history of the cities to the predominant industry,” said Yegor Misheryakov, Chairman of the Committee for Housing and Public Utilities of the Leningrad Region.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: NSU hosted the largest Career Days ever

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Novosibirsk State University – Novosibirsk State University –

From March 3 to April 10, Novosibirsk State University hosted a large-scale career event, Career Days 2025. This year, the NSU Career Development Center team came up with an unusual format for the event in the atmosphere of Career Games, which brought together students and employers. More than 35 individual events were held as part of the Career Days: workshops, master classes, and excursions to company offices. The Career Games traditionally ended with two poster sessions in the Laboratory and Educational Buildings — on April 8 and 10.

In 2025, the NSU Career Development Center will for the first timeimplemented game mechanics for participation in Career Day events— together with students of the Institute of Intelligent Robotics of NSU, we created a Career BotHTTPS: //t. Tu/tsareerkusud_ns_not, which allowed students to accumulate points for participating in events from employers, and at the poster sessions on April 8 and 10, to spend points on purchasing valuable branded prizes from companies and the NSU Career Development Center. Also Career botHTTPS: //t. Tu/tsareerkusud_ns_notThroughout the 2025 Career Days period, we sent students notifications with important information about upcoming events.

    — The idea to create a bot came from the theme of these Career Days, that is, “Career Games”, collecting internal currency is a typical story for many games. In addition to simply following the theme, there was another thought behind it – guys are usually shy to approach companies directly and ask any questions. Points were supposed to motivate guys to communicate and show themselves in order to overcome their fear.

The mechanics of the bot are simple – for their activities, the guys received points, which they could later spend, and also see their place in the ranking. However, even this already generated some kind of competitive spirit, motivating the guys from the top ten to be even more active.

In general, everything went very smoothly. Probably, one of the most difficult tasks for me personally was maintaining the server for the bot during career days – this was largely due to the limited resources and the fact that the bot needed to be provided with uninterrupted operation. A couple of times we came across bugs, but in general – everything really went without a hitch, – said Sergey Bespalov, one of the creators of the Career Bot and a 4th-year student of the Institute of Intelligent Robotics of NSU.

Over 1.5 months, more than 560 students have registered in the Career Bot.

    — We implemented gamification to further motivate students to participate in Career Day activities: attend employer events, communicate at stands, solve problems and leave feedback. We wanted students to associate the search for their first job with an exciting and inspiring process. We work with young talents and try to speak the same language with them.

Gamification is actively used in education and business and shows excellent results. At Career Days 2025, we saw this in practice: 567 students registered in the bot, and it really affected engagement – our partners also noted this. One of the interesting effects: students paid much less attention to the merch that companies raffled off according to their own rules, and went with more enthusiasm to those who exchanged gifts through the bot.

We are currently preparing improvements and will begin refining the mechanics this summer to make the NSU Autumn Career Forum even more interesting and useful for students and companies, commented Daria Balandina, the author of the career quest concept and leading specialist at the NSU Career Development Center.

The creation and launch of the Career Bot was the result of well-coordinated teamwork. We thank Daria Balandina, the author of the career quest concept and leading specialist of the NSU Career Development Center, for the idea and coordination of the project. We also express our gratitude to the students of the NSU Institute of Intelligent Robotics for developing the technical part: Sergey Bespalov, Alexey Spirkin, Polina Novikova. Special thanks to Svetlana Valeryevna Dovgal, Director of the NSU Career Development Center, and Victoria Maltseva, leading specialist of the Center, for developing the career quest economy. Thanks to this team, we managed to implement not only a technically stable, but also a well-thought-out system in terms of mechanics, which inspired the students and enlivened the event format.

    — Career Days 2025 has a special atmosphere, this year it is the theme of artificial intelligence and career games. We and the Career Development Center team have done a tremendous job — a unique design of the Career Games was developed, which reflected the theme of all career events, looked at the participants from banners, badges and T-shirts. Most importantly, a computer bot was used for the first time, which definitely became a special part of the Career Games.

For one and a half months, we held thematic meetings with companies and excursions to enterprises for university students every week. A pleasant surprise was not only the large total number of participating companies, but also the increase in the number of SB RAS institutes among the participants of the poster sessions.

The main message that we convey with all our events and career meetings is that in order for students to trust you, you need to treat them with a pure heart and an open soul. It seems to me that the sincerity and friendliness of the NSU Career Development Center staff, their willingness to help with employment issues, and offer career counseling, encourages students to engage in dialogue. Many thanks to the CDC team, without them such a large-scale event would not have been possible. We have many new ideas and events ahead, for example, in a month we will host the Association of Career Centers with participants from Moscow to Vladivostok, – summed up the Career Days Svetlana Dovgal, Director of the NSU Career Development Center.

Some statistics: a total of 65 companies and more than 3,000 students took part in the events, and 60 volunteers helped organize and conduct the events.

Traditionally, Career Days 2025 will not end on the planned date – until the end of April, there will be several more meetings between students and employers and a series of excursions to defense industry enterprises. Calendar of eventspublished here

The audience was also invited to experience the emotions of such a flight, and the stuntmen’s performances expanded the understanding of this profession.

“Such meetings are very necessary because they give the audience an opportunity to get acquainted with the cinema kitchen, learn the subtleties and secrets from professionals. Thus, the Moskino cinema park unites viewers and creators. When I came here for the first time, five natural sites were built here. I did not expect that this would be such a global and rapidly developing project. Unique sets are built here, thanks to which the filmmaking process becomes more comfortable. We filmed the film Peter I on the natural site of Moscow’s Cathedral Square, and we had very complex stunt scenes there, which we were able to implement in the cinema park. We also filmed the project Santa Claus Wanted here, and these films will soon appear on screens. In addition, a stunt festival will be held soon, in which we will be happy to participate,” Varvara Nikitina shared her impressions.

The stunt coordinator emphasized that it is very comfortable to work in the film park, and the creative process is organized at the highest level.

On April 13, the educational center hosted a creative evening dedicated to Yuri Gagarin. Yulia Kostina, head of the scientific and methodological work department of the Cosmonautics Museum, spoke about the first manned flight into space and the discoveries that were made thanks to this event.

The quest “Space Frontier” was held in the decorations of “Moscow of the 1940s”, “Prince Andrey’s Chambers”, as well as on the central square and near “Cowboy Town”. Participants practiced their knowledge of physics, caught the insidious alien Zikzakzok, and also restored the Earth’s energy system, the planet from a catastrophe.

    Performances, concerts and film screenings

On April 12 and 13, the Gonzaga Theatre showed the interactive play “Frantic Cosmists”. Young viewers and their parents saw famous space explorers on stage and also took part in fun games.

“We liked the detailing of the characters, the costumes of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Yuri Gagarin were memorable, we were surprised by how similar the faces of the great scientists and cosmonauts turned out to be. The children were happy to take pictures with the characters of the play. It’s great that the children were involved in the play, they were invited on stage and they took part in the performance. A very pleasant impression,” said spectator Artem Fedorov.

The guests noted that the costumes were made very realistically, and the performance helped them learn more about space and get to know its discoverers.

On April 13, hits from world cinema were heard from the stage. The audience heard compositions from famous Disney cartoons, Soviet films and popular musicals.

Over the weekend, the Moskino Kinopark cinema hosted screenings of films about family values, love and friendship. Guests appreciated the comedy “Batya-2. Ded” – it takes the viewer back together with the characters to childhood memories of their home and unforgettable moments that you want to return to. The audience was also touched by the funny film “Everything That Concerns You” about the search for a father and music that unites hearts. And the film “Palma-2” told the story of a lost bear cub who finds a real family and true friends.

Actors of the historical series talked about filming in the Moskino cinema parkA historical drama about the events of Ancient Rus’ in the 12th century was filmed at the Moskino cinema park

The Moskino cinema park is part of Sergei Sobyanin’s “Moscow – City of Cinema” project and an object of the Moscow cinema cluster, which is being developed capital’s Department of Culture. The first stage of development has already been completed here: 24 natural sites, four pavilions and six infrastructure facilities have been built. Among them are the sets “Center of Moscow”, “Moscow of the 1940s”, “Vitebsk Station”, “Yurovo Airport”, “Cathedral Square of Moscow”, “Deaf Village”, “County Town”, “Cowboy Town”, “St. Petersburg Bar” and others.

The Moscow Film Cluster is an infrastructure facility, services and facilities for filmmakers, which are being developed by the Moscow Government within the framework of the Moscow — City of Cinema project. Its structure includes the Moskino film park, the Gorky Film Studio (sites on Sergei Eisenstein Street and Valdaisky Proyezd), the Moskino film factory, the Moskino cinema chain, the film commission and the Moskino film platform.

Residents of 30 old houses in the Kuzminki district have moved into new apartments under the renovation program. This was reported by the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the capital’s Department of Urban Development Policy Vladislav Ovchinsky.

After resettlement, old houses are dismantled. New housing is built on the vacated sites under the renovation program with accompanying infrastructure.

“Resettlement under the renovation program in the Kuzminki district began in 2018, when the first residential complex on Volgogradsky Prospekt was handed over for settlement. Today, the number of such residential complexes has reached 16, with a total of 2.8 thousand apartments with finished improved finishing. Residents of 30 completely vacated houses have moved into new apartments in Kuzminki. In total, 287 houses in the district are to be resettled, and over 64 thousand Muscovites will receive new housing,” noted Vladislav Ovchinsky.

The first floors of new buildings under the renovation program are designed as non-residential. Social and domestic facilities will open there – pharmacies, private medical clinics, leisure and educational centers for children, beauty salons, pick-up points and shops.

The area around the residential buildings is being improved: comprehensive landscaping is being carried out, areas for active recreation and sports are being equipped, and CCTV cameras and street lights are being installed.

Earlier Sergei Sobyanin told on the use of prefab technologies in the construction of houses under the renovation program.

Renovation program approved in August 2017. It concerns about a million Muscovites and provides for the resettlement of 5,176 houses. Sergei Sobyanin instructed to double the pace of implementation of the renovation program.

Moscow is one of the leaders among regions in terms of construction volumes. High rates of housing construction correspond to the goals and initiatives of the national project “Infrastructure for life”.

  • MIL-OSI USA: The NPR, PBS Grift Has Ripped Us Off for Too Long

    US Senate News:

    Source: The White House
For years, American taxpayers have been on the hook for subsidizing National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), which spread radical, woke propaganda disguised as “news.”
As President Trump has stated, taxpayer funding of NPR’s and PBS’s biased content is a waste.
Here are some examples of the trash that passes for “news” at NPR and PBS:
In 2024, NPR ran a Valentine’s Day feature around “queer animals,” in which it suggested the make-believe clownfish in Finding Nemo would’ve been better off as a female, that “banana slugs are hermaphrodites,” and that “some deer are nonbinary.”
In 2024, PBS produced a documentary making the case for reparations.
In 2023, PBS’s Washington Week roundtable covered up Joe Biden’s clear mental decline, with far-left “journalist” Jeff Goldberg claiming Biden is actually “quite acute.”
In 2022, NPR educated the nation on the “whole community of genderqueer dinosaur enthusiasts” and “trans-ceratops.”
In 2021, a PBS station aired a “children’s program” that featured a drag queen named “Lil’ Miss Hot Mess.”
In 2021, NPR reported on the “cousin of diet culture” known as “healthism, which is the idea that we have to be healthy” — as if that was a bad thing.
In 2021, NPR suggested doorway sizes are based on “latent fatphobia.”
In 2021, NPR lamented that “animals deserve pronouns, too.”
In 2022, NPR ran a feature titled “What ‘Queer Ducks’ can teach teenagers about sexuality in the animal kingdom.”
In 2020, PBS show Sesame Street partnered with CNN for a town hall aimed presenting children with a one-sided narrative to “address racism” amid the Black Lives Matter riots.
In 2020, NPR explored “the racial origins of fat phobia.”
In 2017, NPR ran a story titled “Cannibalism: It’s ‘Perfectly Natural,’” in which an author describes eating another human’s placenta: “It was really the prep that made it taste good. Granted, the [husband] was a chef and so he knew how to prepare it osso bucco style and used a really nice wine I had brought. It smelled great. It didn’t taste bad.”
In 2017, PBS aired a panel devoted to what it “mean[s] to be woke” and “white privilege.”
In 2017, PBS produced an entire movie celebrating a transgender teenager’s so-called “changing gender identity.”
In 2015, NPR dedicated an entire segment to the “population of anthropomorphic animal enthusiasts known as ‘furries.’”
NPR and PBS have zero tolerance for non-leftist viewpoints:
In 2020, NPR refused to cover the explosive Hunter Biden laptop scandal in the runup to the election, baselessly claiming there were “many, many red flags” and its “assertions don’t amount to much.”
NPR wrote: “We don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste the listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions.”

When a 25-year veteran NPR reporter and editor spoke out about the network’s refusal to report on the Hunter Biden laptop — and their obsession with liberal causes — they suspended him.
The editor found that registered Democrats outnumbered Republicans 87 to zero in their newsroom.
NPR prolifically reported on the Russian collusion hoax, with the editor describing “[Adam] Schiff talking points” as “the drumbeat of NPR news reports.”
NPR management asked its editors to avoid the term “biological sex” when discussing transgender issues.

NPR CEO Katherine Maher once called President Trump “racist,” shared a photo of herself wearing a “Biden for President” campaign hat, serves on the board of a Soros-funded activist group, and described the “reverence for the truth” as a “distraction.”
In 2023, a study found that congressional Republicans saw 85% negative coverage while congressional Democrats saw 54% positive coverage on PBS’s flagship news program.
According to a 2024 study, PBS news staff used 162 variations of the term “far-right,” but only six variations of “far-left.”
Media bias rating agency AllBias — which surveyed nearly 24,000 readers — found NPR’s bias aligns with “liberal, progressive or left-wing thought and/or policy agendas.”
In 2010, NPR terminated journalist Juan Williams, who said it was because he was not a “predictable, black liberal.”
NPR repeatedly dismissed the theory that COVID-19 originated in a lab — a conclusion now deemed likely by the FBI, CIA, and Department of Energy.
April 2020: “Scientists Debunk Lab Accident Theory Of Pandemic Emergence”
May 2020: “As Trump Pushes Theory Of Virus Origins, Some See Parallels In Lead-Up To Iraq War”
May 2021: “Many Scientists Still Think The Coronavirus Came From Nature”
March 2023: “Virologist says COVID origin report could make it harder to study dangerous diseases”
September 2024: “New research points to raccoon dogs in Wuhan market as pandemic trigger. It’s controversial”

A 2024 Media Research Center study found that PBS’s coverage of the Republican National Convention was 72% negative, while coverage of the Democratic National Convention was 88% positive.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: AMERICA/BRAZIL – Nazareno Lanciotti, missionary and martyr, will be proclaimed Blessed

Source: Agenzia Fides – MIL OSI

    Monday, 14 April 2025

Diocese de São Luiz de Cáceres

São Paulo (Agenzia Fides) – “We have come to kill you because you bother us too much.” These were the last words Father Nazareno Lanciotti heard before he was shot dead in his rectory in Jauru, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, in February 2001. Twenty-four years later, Pope Francis, during an audience with the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, recognized his martyrdom. The missionary of Roman origin, who for thirty years dedicated himself to proclaiming the Gospel in the forests and poorest regions of Brazil, and especially to protecting young people from the forms of slavery inflicted on them by pimps and drug traffickers, will therefore be proclaimed blessed.Ordained a priest on June 29, 1966, at the age of 26, he held various pastoral roles in several parishes in Rome for five years. In 1972, after discovering Operation Mato Grosso, he chose, along with other young Italians, to dedicate himself to the mission. He left for South America and was entrusted with the care of the parish of Jauru, in the young diocese of Caceres, located in western Brazil, on the border with Bolivia.”A difficult reality,” as Father Enzo Gabrieli, postulator of the cause for canonization of Father Lanciotti, told Fides (see Fides, 22/3/2021), because it was “made up of many communities scattered in the forest.” He did not lose heart and on the back of a mule he reached what would become, thanks to his passion and faith, a garden city around the parish church of Our Lady of Pilar. His deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, the centrality of the Eucharist in his missionary work, and his devotion to the Pope were at the origin of his work in Jauru, which quickly became the center of diocesan activities.Among his first actions, Father Nazareno decided to build a sanatorium: Jauru was a very poor village, and the missionary noticed that many mothers died during childbirth and many children lost their lives due to common illnesses. The nearest hospital was 200 kilometers away, but over time, this sanatorium became a true Catholic hospital that today operates within the national network. To caring for the body, Father Nazareno added care for the spirit, beginning the construction of a parish center and several chapels in the forest (he built about 40 in total) to assist the many faithful scattered throughout the villages. Next to the parish church, several “peripheral cells” were created where prayers were held (and still are held today) every day, even in the missionary’s absence. In 1987, he joined the Marian Movement of Priests and was appointed its national Director for Brazil the following year. In this capacity, he made frequent trips throughout Brazil to organize prayer cenacles with the Priests and families of the Movement. In addition to building a home for the elderly, a school for younger people, and a minor Seminary (where the first ten local vocations were born), Lanciotti worked to curb the drug trade and prostitution. When the authorities decided to build a new dam to meet electricity needs, workers from all over Brazil and neighboring Bolivia flocked to the area. Drug and prostitution outlets proliferated. Every Saturday evening, he organized activities to entertain the young people and warn them of the dangers: “Eucharistic adoration, the rosary, and devotion to the Virgin will save you.” These were words he also addressed to the workers who traveled daily to the dam construction site, passing through areas where drug traffickers ruled.During those years, as the website of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints states, “strong tensions arose among members of a Masonic lodge, opposed to Father Nazareno’s actions.”He had also met with his young people on the afternoon of February 11, when he was killed in odium fidei. He was aware of the danger he was facing, and that evening, as it was raining, he said: “These are the tears of Heaven for me.” In one passage, with a veil of sadness, almost of premonition, he said to those who were with him: “When you look for me, you will always find me at the foot of the tabernacle.” And that is precisely where he was buried after his death. The martyrdom took place shortly after 9 p.m., when two men with covered faces burst into the rectory where the missionary was dining with his collaborators and some guests. Pointing a gun at those present, they demanded money and asked where the safe was. They threatened everyone to stage a robbery gone wrong. Father Nazareno reassured them; he had offered to help, and those present had laid everything they had on them on the table. But the killers had only one goal. They themselves revealed that they had been sent by certain local figures who were annoyed by the actions of the Church and the missionary. They staged a game of Russian roulette, but the bullet exploded against Father Nazareno by surprise. The two killers fled, leaving the money on the table. The local police, whose headquarters were a few hundred meters from the rectory, did not arrive on the scene until the next day. Father Lanciotti was first taken to the hospital in Cuiabá, then to the Syro-Lebanese Hospital in São Paulo, where he died on February 22, 2001, at the age of 61.His last words were to forgive his killers. It was around 6:00 a.m. on February 22, 2001, when Father Nazareno Lanciotti died after ten days of agony. His murder, far from being an unsuccessful robbery, “proves to have been premeditated. There was a perverse system in place prior to the murder, to which his pastoral work was hindering,” states the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, according to which “his murder immediately benefited from a solid and widespread reputation as a martyr, as well as a clear reputation for signs.” (FB) (Agenzia Fides, 14/4/2025)

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: South-South and Triangular Cooperation Furthers Efforts to Promote Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction and Urban Health Resilience

    Source: UNISDR Disaster Risk Reduction

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) concluded the fifth online certificate training programme titled “Leveraging South-South and Triangular Cooperation: Inclusive and Technological Innovations for Urban Health and Disaster Risk Reduction” on 12, 19, and 26 March 2025.

Building on a successful partnership since 2020, this fifth training programme emphasized the importance of a whole-of-society approach, particularly in addressing the needs of the most at-risk groups—such as women, older persons, and persons with disabilities—in disaster risk reduction, health emergencies, and disaster risk management. Through expert-led discussions and practical case studies, participants gained valuable insights into advancing inclusive, resilient, and healthy cities through technological innovations and South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

“This training programme embodies the principles of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, which explicitly calls for an inclusive approach that considers the needs of all populations and groups. Through South-South and Triangular Cooperation, we can share valuable lessons and innovative approaches that ensure no one is left behind when disaster strikes.”

    – Piedad Huerta Arneros, Chief of Office of Country and Subregional Coordination in PAHO/WHO, in her Opening Remarks

The first training session, led by UNDRR Global Education and Training Institute (GETI) on 12 March, emphasized disability-inclusive urban resilience in practice. The session introduced participants to the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities – Annex for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, a practical tool that supports local governments in ensuring meaningful participation and accessibility for persons with disabilities in disaster risk planning and implementation.

“Persons with disabilities must be decision-makers in resilience strategies that affect their lives. Inclusion is not only a right—it improves the quality and relevance of our actions,”

    – Carlos Kaiser, Executive Director of ONG Inclusiva

Practical case studies from Quezon City in the Philippines, and Pudahuel Municipality in Chile—both of which have applied the Disability Inclusion Scorecard provided real-world application insights for participants. “Since the implementation of the Disability Inclusion Scorecard, we have been able to strengthen our approach and adopt the necessary adjustments to close the gaps,” said Maria Elena Opazo, Director of Disaster Risk Management Department of Pudahuel Municipality.

Ma. Bianca D. Perez, Head of the Disaster Risk and Management Office of Quezon City, also emphasized how they were empowered to cater to the different needs of people with disabilities, “Profile of those capacitated [was collected] to ensure that the interventions were equitable, not just a one-size-fits-all solution, but cater to the different types of disabilities identified.”

According to UNDRR’s 2023 Global Survey on Disability and Disasters: 84% of persons with disabilities reported being unprepared for disasters and 56% reported lacking access to disaster risk information. These figures highlight the urgency to ensure the meaningful inclusion of persons with disabilities in disaster risk reduction planning.

Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of UNDRR, has offered three recommendations for action to all participants:

“First, we must continue building the awareness and capacity of institutions and staff to address this problem. For our part, UNDRR remains committed to supporting capacity development and to fostering all-of-government and whole-of-society approaches to disaster risk reduction.

Second, we must ensure that there are mechanisms to engage with at-risk groups and to capture their needs in planning processes. This is why UNDRR developed and piloted the Annex for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, as part of our Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities. We invite all local governments to utilize this tested tool.

And third, we need to promote international cooperation and the sharing of good practices among countries, especially South-South and Triangular cooperation. By learning from each other, exchanging good practices, and working collaboratively, countries can accelerate the adoption of new solutions to ensure no one is left behind.”

    – Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of UNDRR

A mini quiz at the end of the first training session reinforced key learning messages. A total of 1,362 unique participants from 141 countries and territories joined this session live, reflecting strong global interest in inclusive urban resilience approaches.

This joint training includes three online training sessions. The second session, led by PAHO/WHO on 19 March, explored the intersection of ageing, disability, and urban health emergencies, highlighting the importance of integrating diverse actors into disaster risk reduction and urban resilience planning to ensure inclusive and accessible solutions. The final session, led by UNOSSC on 26 March, was centered on leveraging technological innovation for urban disaster risk reduction and management. This session facilitated the exchange of knowledge and good practices on cutting-edge, low-cost, and high-impact technologies that can enhance urban resilience through South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

Dima Al-Khatib, Director of UNOSSC, called attention to the importance of South-South Cooperation, especially in capacity building activities to further SDGs

“South-South Cooperation fosters collaboration amongst developing countries by facilitating knowledge exchange, technical cooperation, and resource sharing to achieve mutual development goals.”

    – Dima Al-Khatib, Director of UNOSSC

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Answer to a written question – Strengthening EU sanctions against the Russian shadow fleet by aligning with international partners – E-000937/2025(ASW)

    Source: European Parliament

Since the 14th package, the EU has taken far-reaching initiatives to curb the operation as well as the risks posed by Russia’s shadow fleet.

The recent 16th package significantly expanded the number of listed vessels by 74 , thereby bringing the total number of ships subject to EU sanctions to 153.

To date, this measure has had a considerable impact on the activity of the shadow fleet. These ships have often changed their names, flag and ownership to obfuscate their identities. Despite such attempts, the vessels become tainted and struggle to lift oil, increasing the cost for Russia to operate such a fleet.

In addition to listing vessels, the Council has taken auxiliary measures to weaken the shadow fleet. For example, it has broadened the listing criterion, and designated companies which are material in enabling the fleet.

This includes shipping companies and their managers, who facilitate the transport of Russian oil. Any vessels owned or controlled by these individuals or entities also become subject to restrictions, for example on accessing EU services.

Coordination with international partners plays an important role in undermining the shadow fleet. The EU is committed to continued strong multilateral cooperation, with the goal of implementing measures that will further weaken Russia’s ability to wage its war of aggression.

At the same time, it should be noted that targeting requires thorough preparation to ensure a solid legal basis. Variations in legal standards between the United Kingdom, United States and EU can apply, and may result in designations that are different in scope and number.

Ultimately, any decision on new listings, including those which result in a closer alignment with partners, is taken by the Council acting through unanimity.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Answer to a written question – Removal from the Polish sanctions list of a company linked to Russia – E-000260/2025(ASW)

    Source: European Parliament

Omne Energia and Gazprom are not listed under EU restrictive measures (sanctions). In addition, the import of Russian natural gas into the EU is not prohibited under EU sanctions.

Restrictions on public procurement which prohibit the award of public contracts to Russian entities and those majority owned by them foresee an exemption for the purchase, import or transfer of natural gas[1]. Therefore, the Commission cannot comment on this specific procurement procedure mentioned by the Honourable Member.

Any additional sanctions would need to be adopted unanimously by the Council of the EU.

The Commission cannot comment on the removal of Omne Energia from the Polish sanctions list, its original inclusion not being based on EU sanctions.

Such action would therefore not be considered as circumvention. The Commission is not aware of similar situations in other Member States.

Source: Central Bank of Russia –

Traditionally, the largest increase in assets was seen in banks. At the same time, non-credit financial institutions (NFIs) grew dynamically, offering products that allowed them to compete in terms of profitability with bank deposits, such as money market exchange-traded funds and short-term life insurance policies. At the same time, the share of assets in brokerage services in the volume of total assets decreased.

The profitability of most Russian financial institutions has increased. Management companies remained the most profitable among the main segments of NFIs in 2024.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Marat Khusnullin: More than 2.7 million tons of asphalt concrete were laid on the Dyurtyuli-Achit highway

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: Government of the Russian Federation – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The implementation of a large-scale project to build the Dyurtyuli-Achit highway, which will be part of the federal highway M-12 “Vostok”, is ongoing. To date, 2.7 million tons of asphalt concrete have been laid on all three stages of the highway, which runs through the territories of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Perm Krai and Sverdlovsk Oblast. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

“When implementing infrastructure projects, it is especially important to use high-quality construction materials. This is the basis of reliability and durability. This is especially relevant for transport facilities, on which the comfort and safety of Russians’ travel over short and long distances directly depends. In order to extend the federal highway M-12 “Vostok”, a new section is being built from the city of Dyurtyuli to the village of Achit, where all asphalt concrete compositions undergo thorough testing. Then, test paving is carried out on experimental sections to assess the quality of the road surface. In total, more than 3.5 million tons of asphalt concrete mixture will be used to install the upper base layer, as well as the upper and lower layers of the road surface along the entire Dyurtyuli – Achit highway. To date, 2.7 million tons have already been laid on all three stages of the highway,” said Marat Khusnullin.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that each layer of asphalt concrete pavement has its own composition depending on its purpose and expected load. In addition, due to the placement of testing laboratories directly at the site of work, operational control over the compliance of materials with the necessary requirements is ensured.

According to the Chairman of the Board of the state company Avtodor, Vyacheslav Petushenko, the asphalt concrete mixture is selected directly taking into account the conditions of its operation.

“The special feature of the asphalt concrete used in the construction of the Dyurtyuli-Achit highway is its resistance to rutting, fatigue failure, cracks, and water resistance. The produced asphalt concrete undergoes laboratory tests, where the grain composition, binder content, and volumetric characteristics are assessed. Quality control is not limited to the production stage. Asphalt concrete samples are also taken directly on experimental sections. This is important for obtaining high-quality performance characteristics of the coating,” noted Vyacheslav Petushenko.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: HSE and Avito launch master’s degree program in machine learning in digital product

    Translartion. Region: Russians Fedetion –

Source: State University Higher School of Economics – State University Higher School of Economics –

Faculty of Computer Science HSE, together with the Russian IT company Avito, announces the launch of a new Master’s program in Machine Learning (ML) in Digital Product. The program is aimed at training specialists who will be able to apply advanced machine learning technologies to solve real business problems and create products used by millions of users. A total of 35 people will be able to undergo training in the first wave, the training of 30 of them will be fully financed by Avito.

The program is suitable for graduates of a bachelor’s degree in mathematical, technical or economic specialties who want to deepen their knowledge in the field of machine learning. Avito expects that future students can program in Python and write understandable code for analysts and engineers, know standard algorithms and data structures, as well as the basics of ML and SQL, have basic knowledge in the field of linear algebra, probability theory, mathematical statistics and mathematical analysis.

The full-time master’s program lasts two years and includes both mandatory and optional courses, allowing students to create an individual educational track. Mandatory subjects include probability theory, mathematical statistics, recommender systems, deep learning, MLOps, Python algorithms, backend development, and GPU computing. Elective courses include the basics of micro- and macroeconomics, mechanism design, auction theory, LLM (Large Language Models), deep learning in audio and video processing, dynamic pricing, etc.

Students will be able to get a paid internship in one of Avito’s DS teams already during their studies — the company will launch several waves of selection during the training period. During the internship, students will be able to use the practical knowledge they have gained when writing term papers and theses under the guidance of a mentor from the team.

The development of the master’s program was carried out jointly with experts from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and data scientists from Avito. The teachers are leading specialists in the field of machine learning, such as Anna Markova, Ruslan Gilyazev, Anastasia Rysmyatova, Mikhail Kamenshchikov and Alexander Ledovsky, who have both teaching experience and experience working on large Avito projects, including the development of platforms for predicting ad parameters, monetization and algorithms for ranking paid ads.

To be admitted, you must pass a portfolio competition and an interview with Avito experts. The selection starts on June 20 and will last until the end of August.

“Our Master’s program is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of machine learning and learn how to solve real business problems. Students will master the full cycle of working with ML – from design to implementation, solving cases based on Avito data. This is a unique chance to gain practical experience in a large IT company. We strive to make education accessible to talented students, so Avito fully covers the cost of tuition for 30 program participants. Classes are held in the evenings and on Saturdays, which allows students not only to study, but also to immediately apply knowledge in practice, building a career in parallel with their studies,” shared Ilya Nikitin, academic director of the educational program “Machine Learning in a Digital Product”, a lecturer at the Faculty of Computer Science at the Higher School of Economics.

  • MIL-OSI Global: New UK system to protect satellites against attack shows how global conflict has spilled into outer space

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Jessie Hamill-Stewart, PhD Researcher, University of Bath

Lockheed Martin and US Space Force

The UK government has announced £65 million in funding for a new system called Borealis which is intended to help the UK military defend its satellites against threats. Borealis is a software system that collates and processes data to strengthen the UK military’s ability to monitor what’s going on in space.

The government’s investment, announced on March 7, underlines the increasingly critical role played by space systems in the modern world. Space services play a key role in managing critical infrastructure such as the energy grid, transport systems and communications networks.

For example, SpaceX’s Starlink system has been vitally important for communication on the battlefield during Ukraine’s war with Russia. It is just one example of the game changing potential of satellite based services.

The investment in Borealis also shows that the UK government is taking the threat to space systems increasingly seriously. From as long ago as 2019, senior US officials have warned that space is no longer considered a “benign environment”.

In 2021, a US general claimed that states were constantly conducting attacks on satellites, including jamming and cyber-attacks. Announcing the Borealis system in 2025, Major General Paul Tedman, the commander of UK Space Command, characterised space as “increasingly contested”.

As the international order is coming under increasing pressure, nations are engaging in more combative behaviour, not just in space, but in cyberspace, and under the seas.

A space system is composed of four parts – traditionally called segments. These include the space segment (satellites and other spacecraft), the ground segment (ground stations, control rooms), and the user segment (a signal receiver, for example). Communications between these parts of the system form what’s called the link segment.

In addition to intentional attacks, satellites can also experience problems because of physical collisions with orbiting debris, from cosmic radiation, and activity on the Sun, which can interfere with onboard systems. For satellites, security against attacks has often been a secondary consideration. It was hard enough to build a system which could survive in space without introducing the additional costs and challenges of securing it against attacks from adversaries.

Addressing threats to assets in space will require an all-encompassing approach, as I have argued in a recent report. First, security needs to cover all four segments of space infrastructure. The easiest way to interrupt a space system might be to target the ground or the user segment, rather than trying to interfere directly with a satellite.

Starlink has been vitally important in Ukraine during the war with Russia.
    LanKS / Shutterstock

Second, security needs to be considered across the life cycle of the system, from design and construction, through launch, to operations and application. Consider, for example, if the detailed specifications of a satellite have already been leaked to a malicious party. That might provide them with an in-depth understanding of how to attack the spacecraft – and in such a way that may be difficult to defend against without going back to redesign it.

This type of issue was less of a problem when satellites were developed almost entirely by government agencies and large aerospace companies. ongoing expansion of the commercial space sector, start-ups and new entrants to the sector may not have the same approach to security as more seasoned organisations.

Third, security needs to include the whole range of threats facing space infrastructure, of which a satellite is just one part. We must therefore consider the physical security of hardware, information security, cybersecurity, the personnel working on the project, and supply chain security.

    Vulnerable to sabotage

The range of threats facing space systems parallels those facing other critical systems, such as underwater telecommunications cables. There have been several recent incidents of subsea cables being cut in the Baltic Sea, for example. There is also at least one reported instance of hackers burrowing deep inside core telecommunications networks.

It is becoming painfully clear that much of the infrastructure underpinning the economy and our daily lives is fundamentally insecure. Determined attackers are increasingly operating across both the physical world and cyberspace.

Retrofitting security onto space systems is technically challenging and hugely expensive. There are also tough policy questions here. Governments simply do not have the resources or the legal powers to act alone on this issue. Neither is it clear that the private sector will voluntarily commit to higher security standards and a vast programme of investment in existing infrastructure.

Another issue is the global nature of space systems: differing security regulations make it challenging to ensure a coordinated approach to infrastructure across states.

This underscores the importance of raising public awareness around the scale and scope of threats to space systems – and making clear what the impact would be on the public if this infrastructure ceased to operate. If governments are going to invest more in securing space systems, then people will need to understand why this is critical.

However, the challenge of reverse engineering security into the complex and rapidly expanding network of space systems may ultimately be beyond the resources and appetites of governments and companies.

If that is the case, then in addition to raising awareness around security risks, governments and other organisations should also consider efforts to increase the resilience of space systems to attacks. In addition to thinking about how to better secure our space infrastructure, it may be prudent to consider how we might live without it.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: UK sends multi-million pound military equipment loan to Ukraine

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    Press release

UK sends multi-million pound military equipment loan to Ukraine

The UK makes second £752 million payment to Ukraine through the Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans for Ukraine scheme.

A £752 million payment has today (14 April) been sent to Ukraine through the Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans for Ukraine scheme. The funding will support Ukraine to procure vital military equipment, including urgently needed air defence. This comes as Russia continues its air assault on Ukraine, striking the city of Sumy.

The loan, which will be paid for through the profits of sanctioned Russian sovereign assets in the EU, forms part of a wider £2.26 billion loan agreed between the Chancellor and Minister Marchenko on 1 March.

The payment highlights the UK’s steadfast support to Ukraine whilst building on the Chancellor’s Spring Statement pledge to go further and faster to protect our national security and maximise the economic growth potential of the UK defence sector. The equipment support and maintenance elements will be mainly spent in the UK, boosting the UK economy and skilled jobs.

Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer said:

The world is changing before our eyes, reshaped by global instability, including Russian aggression in Ukraine.

A strong Ukraine is vital to UK national security and this second tranche of funding will help put them in the strongest possible position, and contribute towards our collective security.

Defence Secretary, John Healey MP said:

2025 is the critical year for Ukraine and this is the critical moment. This is the moment for our defence industries to step up, and they are; a moment for our militaries to step up, and they are; a moment for our Governments to step up, and we are.

This new tranche of funds is part of our £4.5 billion of military support this year – more than ever before – and will be used to buy urgently needed air defence, artillery, and parts to help repair vehicles and equipment to get them back into the fight.

We are stepping up support for Ukraine to deter Russian aggression and bolster Britain’s national security as the foundation of our Plan for Change.

Today’s payment forms the second part of the UK’s £2.26 billion loan, which has been spaced into three separate tranches to give Ukraine more flexibility and allow them to swiftly adapt to the ever-changing battlefield. The first payment was made on 6 March, with the final payment to follow in 2026.

The multi-billion payment forms part of the UK’s contribution to the Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans for Ukraine scheme, which is a G7 commitment to collectively support Ukraine through a total of $50 billion.

It follows a £450 million surge in military support that was announced by the UK last week, which includes £350 million from this year’s record £4.5 billion military support funding for Ukraine. Further funding is being provided by Norway, via the UK-led International Fund for Ukraine.

In addition to providing financial support, the Ministry of Defence will also support Ukraine to procure the equipment needed to fight Russia’s invasion. This will include a new ‘close fight’ military aid package – with funding for radar systems, anti-tank mines and hundreds of thousands of drones – worth more than £250 million, using funding from the UK and Norway.

The government’s Plan for Change will see UK defence spending increased to 2.5% of GDP by 2027. The UK’s world-leading defence sector is vital to the economy, supporting 430,000 high-skilled, high-paid jobs across the UK and strengthening our security. 68% of defence spending is outside of London and the South East, benefitting every nation and region of the UK.

As part of the international competition “Macaroni Builder”, students studied the theory, made calculations, designed and built towers and bridges from macaroni products. The competition was held at SPbGASU for the fifteenth time, and 26 teams from six Russian regions, as well as from Armenia and the Republic of Belarus, took part in it.

Every year the competition is gaining more and more popularity, and its participants demonstrate a high level of skill, which is understandable: in this way, the contestants develop practical skills in construction mechanics, architecture and other professional disciplines, exchange experience, ideas and knowledge, and develop creative abilities.

The competition was attended by teams from the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, Polotsk State University named after Euphrosyne of Polotsk (Republic of Belarus), Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Tyumen Industrial University, Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Belgorod State Technological University named after V.G. Shukhov, Tver State Technical University, Emperor Alexander I Petersburg State Transport University, SPbGASU, Lyceum No. 387 named after N.V. Belousov, School No. 518 of Vyborg District, Schools No. 106, No. 246 of Primorsky District, School No. 69 of Kalininsky District, School No. 87 of Petrogradsky District of St. Petersburg.

“The rather rich history of the competition confirms that it is possible to successfully create structures from pasta and develop the competencies that are necessary in the professional activities of future architects and builders. Participants understand from their own practice which structure works and which does not, see their mistakes, and remember successful examples. That is why not only victory is important, but also participation,” said Andrey Nikulin, Dean of the Construction Faculty of SPbGASU.

The competition includes two nominations: “The tallest structure. Towers” and “Structure with the largest span”. For the base of the towers, participants are provided with 100×100 cm stretchers, and tables are used as supports for the bridges. In addition to pasta, sculptural plasticine is used. Four hours of evening time are allocated for the construction of the structures. The structures must stand until 9 am the following day. The jury also took into account constructiveness, expressiveness, and rational use of materials.

The anniversary competition was marked by a unique event: for the first time in its history, one team became the winner in both nominations. The team from the Belgorod State Technological University named after V. G. Shukhov (Veronika Smulyarova, Aleksey Dmitriev, Ivan Pakhomov, Aleksandr Barelsky, Anna Migulina) was recognized as the champions twice.

“We participated in the competition for the third time and gained good experience. In addition, we trained hard to become professionals in our field. This victory is the result of many years of work. This year, we built a copy of the Chinese Guangzhou TV tower. It is built in the shape of an hourglass, erected in an interesting way, which attracted us. Our bridge is a cable-stayed suspension bridge dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. On one side, we installed paper numbers 1945, on the other – 2025. Each structure used 800 grams of pasta – this is a rational use of materials,” said Alexander Barelsky.

The team from Tyumen Industrial University (Dmitry Bakunin, Artemy Vasiliev, Ilya Moskaev, Nikita Leskov, Arseny Naidanov) also achieved double success, taking second place in both nominations.

In the nomination “Structure with the largest span”, the third place went to the team of the National Institute of Architecture and Construction of Armenia (Vladimir Safiridi, Movses Hakobyan, Gevorg Yusisyan, Tigran Tevosyan, Nikolay Harutyunyan).

“First of all, I would like to thank the organizers of the “Macaroni Builder”. Such competitions are one of the types of training for students, when students assemble what they designed with their own hands and see in practice how this structure works and for what reasons it falls. It is a useful thing to see how structures work. The competition encourages students to new achievements. We built a railway bridge on the bypass of the branch from the city of Dilijan to the city of Vanadzor. The guys assembled the model and the bridge span correctly, making a close copy of the real structure. In addition, they got acquainted with the design experience of other students. We will try to take into account the first experience we have gained in the next competition, which we would like to attend,” said the team leader, head of the Department of Roads and Bridges of the National Institute of Architecture and Construction of Armenia Artashes Sargsyan.

In the nomination “The tallest structure. Towers” the third place was taken by the team of the Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (Olga Kupetskova, Yulia Yudina, Ekaterina Nesterova, Roman Mukhatov, Daria Yakovleva).

A master class for pupils of kindergarten No. 83 of the Petrogradsky district was held at the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The event became part of a new joint project “Young Engineers” aimed at developing engineering and technical thinking in preschoolers.

The meeting took place in the university’s model workshop, where young guests, under the guidance of experienced mentors, were able to immerse themselves in the world of architectural design. The master class was conducted by Associate Professor of the Department of Architectural Design, PhD in Architecture Olga Belousova together with second- and third-year students of the Faculty of Architecture.

The Young Engineers project is the result of joint work of employees of the automobile and road, construction and architecture faculties of SPbGASU with teachers of kindergarten No. 83. As part of the cooperation, special methodological manuals and recommendations for preschool institutions are being developed to promote the early development of technical thinking in children.

The project plays a special role in popularizing the engineering profession among preschool children. The organizers strive to show that engineering is not only interesting and exciting, but also very important for the development of modern society. Through game forms and practical tasks, children get acquainted with the basics of design, learn to solve creative problems and develop spatial thinking, which in the future can help them make a conscious choice of a professional path.

The event was organized by the Institute of Continuing Education of SPbGASU, which continues to develop innovative approaches to technical education from an early age.
