    Decisions of Sampo plc’s Annual General Meeting

    The Annual General Meeting of Sampo plc, held today on 23 April 2025, approved all the proposals made to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) by the Board of Directors and its Committees, including distribution of dividend of EUR 0.34 per share for 2024.

    The AGM adopted the financial accounts for 2024 and discharged the members of the Board of Directors and CEO from liability for the financial year ending 31 December 2024. The AGM authorised the Board of Directors to decide on share repurchases.

    Including proxy representatives, there were altogether 1,746,933,448 shares (64.91 per cent of all shares) and 1,750,933,448 votes (64.96 per cent of all votes) in the company represented at the AGM.

    Dividend payment

    The AGM decided to distribute a dividend of EUR 0.34 per share for 2024. The dividend will be paid to the shareholders registered in the company’s shareholders register maintained by Euroclear Finland Oy or VP Securities A/S in Denmark, and to the holders of the Swedish depository receipts (SDRs) registered in the securities depository and settlement register maintained by Euroclear Sweden AB, as at the record date of 25 April 2025.

    The dividend will be paid to the shareholders and holders of the share entitlements on 6 May 2025 and to the SDR holders on 8 May 2025.

    Election and remuneration of the Board members

    The number of Board members was decreased by one to eight members. Christian Clausen, Steve Langan, Risto Murto, Antti Mäkinen, Markus Rauramo, Astrid Stange and Annica Witschard were re-elected for a term continuing until the close of the next Annual General Meeting. Sara Mella was elected as a new member to the Board. Of the previous members, Georg Ehrnrooth and Jannica Fagerholm were not available for re-election.

    At its organisational meeting, the Board elected Antti Mäkinen as Chair and Risto Murto as Vice Chair.

    All Board members have been determined to be independent of the Company and its major shareholders under the rules of the Finnish Corporate Governance Code 2025. The CVs of the Board members are available at www.sampo.com/board.

    The AGM decided on the following annual fees to the members of the Board of Directors until the close of the next AGM:

    • EUR 243,000 for the Chair of the Board (prev. EUR 235,000);
    • EUR 140,000 for the Vice Chair of the Board (prev. EUR 135,000);
    • EUR 108,000 for each member of the Board (prev. EUR 104,000);
    • EUR 30,000 for the Chair of the Audit Committee as an additional annual fee (prev. EUR 29,000); and
    • EUR 6,800 for each member of the Audit Committee as an additional annual fee (prev. EUR 6,600).

    A Board member must acquire Sampo plc A shares at the price paid in public trading with 50 per cent of his/her annual fee after the deduction of taxes, payments and potential statutory social and pension costs. Notwithstanding this, a Board member is not required to purchase any additional Sampo plc A shares if the Board member owns such amount of said shares that their value is equivalent to twice the respective Board member’s gross annual fee. The Company will pay any possible transfer tax related to the acquisition of the shares.

    Election and remuneration of the auditor and of the Sustainability Reporting Assurer Provider

    The Authorised Public Accountant Firm and Authorised Sustainability Audit Firm Deloitte Ltd was re-elected as the Company’s auditor and Sustainability Reporting Assurance Provider for the financial year 2025. APA ASA Jukka Vattulainen will continue as the auditor with principal responsibility and the principal authorised sustainability auditor. Company’s Auditor and the Sustainability Reporting Assurance Provider will be paid compensation against invoices approved by the Company.

    Remuneration Report for Governing Bodies

    Sampo’s Remuneration Report for Governing Bodies was adopted through an advisory resolution.

    Authorisation on share repurchases

    The AGM authorised the Board to resolve to repurchase, on one or several occasions, a maximum of 250,000,000 Sampo plc A shares. The maximum number of shares represents approximately 9.29 per cent of all outstanding A shares of the company. The repurchased shares will be cancelled.

    The authorisation will be valid until the close of the next AGM, however, no longer than 18 months from the AGM’s decision.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Law Library Publishes New Report, “Minimum Wages for Seafarers on Foreign-Registered Vessels”

    The staff of the Global Legal Research Directorate of the Law Library of Congress has recently completed a comparative report examining the laws of countries around the globe to identify those that have adopted specific requirements regarding foreign seafarers’ wages. Out of 84 jurisdictions surveyed, only four, Australia, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, passed legislation affecting foreign seafarers’ wages, with Norway having pending legislation.

    According to the report, Minimum Wages for Seafarers on Foreign-Registered Vessels, the implementation of wage requirements in the countries identified was conditioned upon certain geographical requirements and/or the existence of a nexus between the government and the vessel’s operating service in terms of the number of landings in the country’s ports or between the seafarer and the country.

    The report contains individual country surveys of the scope of application and the type of required wages in the countries where wage requirements for seafarers on foreign-registered vessels exist. In addition, the report contains information on recommended international law standards and a table summarizing the findings and providing citations to laws and pending legislation.

    As of 22 April 2025, Danish market participants are able to settle wholesale and retail payments in Danish krone instantly in the Eurosystem’s T2 and TARGET Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS) services. Following a successful migration, Danmarks Nationalbank has become the first non-euro area central bank to participate in all three TARGET Services with its currency. Settlement in Danish krone has already been available in TARGET2-Securities since 2018.

    By using T2 and TIPS, Danish financial markets will benefit from common standards with the euro area, optimised liquidity management and strengthened IT security, allowing efficient and secure real-time settlement of wholesale and retail payments.

    This achievement is a result of the close collaboration between Danmarks Nationalbank and the Eurosystem since the decision to join T2 and TIPS was taken in 2020. Danish market participants have been conducting testing campaigns and migration rehearsals since September 2023 to ensure full readiness for onboarding to the two systems.

    With the inclusion of Danish krone, T2 activated its multi-currency function for the first time. TIPS now supports three currencies: the euro, the Swedish krona, which was onboarded in 2024, and the Danish krone. Including other currencies in TARGET Services strengthens European integration and enhances financial market efficiency beyond the euro area. Sweden has expressed an interest in joining additional TARGET Services, while other non-euro area countries, such as Norway and Iceland, have also expressed an interest in joining TARGET Services with their respective national currencies. An added benefit of multi-currency infrastructures is the potential for safe and efficient cross-currency settlement. Danmarks Nationalbank, Sveriges Riksbank and the ECB are collaborating on the implementation of such cross-currency capabilities in TIPS.

    Danmarks Nationalbank applied to join T2 and TIPS in 2020, and the currency participation agreement was signed in 2024. TARGET Services are developed and operated by the Eurosystem and provide safe and efficient financial market infrastructure services in central bank money, which supports financial integration and the capital markets union. Including branches and subsidiaries, more than 40,000 banks worldwide and all their customers can be reached via T2, which every six days processes a value close to the entire euro area GDP. TIPS settles instant retail payments at any time of day and on any day of the year.

    Message from the CEO

    Sales in the first quarter were in line with expectations, amounting to approximately 20 MSEK, resulting in an EBITDA of 0.7 MSEK. During the quarter, we received two orders from our partner Kaiser in Singapore, totaling approximately 4 MSEK in consumables. The end customer has purchased instruments through four separate orders. The continued orders of consumables indicate that the instruments are in frequent use. The customer operates within law enforcement, and the SERS consumables are used to identify narcotics in very low concentrations and mixtures that are typically difficult or impossible to detect with handheld Raman devices that lack the patented SERS capability. 

    During the quarter, we launched three new accessories that address challenges previously unsolvable with handheld Raman technology. These new accessories were demonstrated for partners and customers, and the feedback has been very positive. Combined with SERS and the Serstech Arx mkII, these additions enable the identification of narcotics and other hazardous substances down to 30 micrograms, as well as liquid traces as small as a few microliters. No other handheld Raman-based systems currently on the market offer this capability, which we refer to as trace identification. Competing technologies are limited to either trace detection (i.e., detecting the presence of a threat without identifying it – similar to what a dog can do) or bulk identification (i.e., identifying larger volumes of a chemical). Serstech now provides a complete solution encompassing bulk identification, trace sampling and collection, and trace identification. With our software and integration capabilities, we offer the most comprehensive solution on the market for identifying narcotics, hazardous substances, and chemical warfare agents.

    In March, we began the liquidation of our Romanian subsidiary, Serstech Development SRL, and we expect the process to be completed by the end of the second quarter. As of the end of March, we had nine software developers working at the Romanian office. Following the pandemic, staff costs in Romania have increased significantly. By relocating these positions to our Lund office, we can reduce costs while also improving output. Most replacements have already been recruited, and we expect the team to be fully staffed before the end of summer.

    We are observing promising trends in the market that are likely to positively impact our sales in the coming years. The threat of tariffs is making U.S.-based product pricing increasingly unpredictable. As a result, some customers are seeking non-U.S. suppliers – of which there are very few in our industry. All our major competitors are based in the U.S., while Serstech remains the only EU-based manufacturer of handheld Raman solutions. This trend is most prominent in Europe but is also emerging in other regions.

    However, the threat of U.S. tariffs could negatively affect our U.S. sales in 2025, and we are closely monitoring the situation. While it is too early to draw definitive conclusions, a potential worst-case scenario is that our products could become too expensive for the U.S. market. We are currently evaluating and preparing potential solutions, such as establishing local production in the U.S. and/or building inventory in the U.S. before any higher tariffs are implemented.

    The year has started positively, with a strengthened product portfolio, high demand, and the possibility of a trade conflict that could ultimately benefit Serstech in the medium to long term. As always, we should expect quarterly variations due to the nature of the industry, and given the current geopolitical volatility, these fluctuations may be more pronounced than usual. Nonetheless, we remain confident in our long-term growth and profitability. The investments we are making this year in sales, product development, and production will significantly contribute to our results for many years to come.

    Last weekend, April 19 and 20, the Moskino Cinema Park hosted a filmmakers’ forum dedicated to the use of modern technologies in film production. Industry experts spoke at the forum. In addition, it was possible to take part in acting master classes and the quest “Film! Film! Film!”, as well as see the one-man show “Dog”.

    Lectures, master classes and creative evenings

    The first lecture was given by Broadcast’s Product Director Leonid Novoselov. He spoke about real-time filming technology, 3D graphics and innovative programs for implementing creative ideas. The lecture helped students of specialized universities learn a lot of new things.

    The master class by Natalia Klibanova, chief producer of the film company Amedia Production, was devoted to the topic of complex staging of filming. She worked on such projects as The Master and Margarita, Palma-2 and Psychologists. She shared stories from her own professional experience with the student filmmakers.

    “It is very nice that there are people who come to my lectures at the cinema park more than once. In general, the audience is very interested, these are either those who want to learn more about cinema or those who want to integrate into the industry. Actors who want to expand their professional opportunities often come to the lectures. And we always invite them to castings, tell them about projects. This certainly gives results. There are also those who want to reformat their activities, while remaining in cinema. For example, they were involved in advertising, but dream of moving towards TV series. We talk about the work of our company, about who we are looking for, offer internships for students. The most important thing is not to be afraid to participate in pitching, festivals, educational programs that the Moskino cinema park organizes. It is incredibly valuable that forums, lectures and master classes for aspiring filmmakers are held here,” said Natalia Klibanova.

    The artistic part of film production was the subject of a lecture by Alexandrina Trapeznikova, a teacher at the Institute of Cinema and Television (GITR). The production designer spoke about how the tools of professionals in this field have changed thanks to the advent of computer technology, as well as about drawing skills and new tasks. At a panel discussion, filmmakers Natalia Klibanova, Alexandra Trapeznikova and Leonid Novoselov discussed the latest trends in the industry, the future of cinematography and answered questions from the audience.

    The Gonzaga Theatre set hosted a creative evening with actor Lev Zulkarnaev, a participant in the projects “The Word of a Boy” and “Buratino”. The graduate of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts – GITIS, spoke about the acting profession and interaction with the director. Many young fans gathered for his performance, took photos with the artist, asked questions and received autographs.

    “I think that such meetings are important, but only in combination with my own experience. Because in theory everything sounds one way, but in practice it is completely different. It is important that those who want to get into cinema definitely try, get their hand in, maybe make mistakes and learn from them. The Cinema Park is a professional space with good organization, where I felt very comfortable working. I starred here in the film “Buratino” on the “Provincial Towns of Europe” set, and I only have positive impressions. I have never seen such amazing scenery. I hope that I will definitely work on the Cinema Park sets again,” shared Lev Zulkarnayev.

    In addition, a master class and lecture on acting were held by the actor of the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre Nikita Makhalov and the director of the Theatre of Young Muscovites Andrey Zadubrovsky. Nikita Makhalov demonstrated professional techniques for conveying the emotional state of the hero. Andrey Zadubrovsky told the audience about the means of expressiveness of speech and plasticity, and also revealed the secret of how to play a role while remaining yourself.

    At the Gonzaga Theatre, children and parents watched Alexey Poltavsky’s one-man show “Dog” based on the story of the same name by Georgian writer Nodar Dumbadze. The story about the struggle between good and evil, a teenager’s difficult choice and love for an abandoned animal evoked genuine feelings in the audience.

    The immersive quest “Film! Film! Film!” was held at the Uyezdny Gorod location. The participants had to go through the entire film production process – from creating a script to releasing the film, and they were helped in this by episodes played out by professional actors. In the process of creating a cinematic masterpiece, the participants were inspired by realistic decorations of suburban streets and buildings.

    Unforgettable impressions of the weekend were left by watching films for the whole family at the Moskino Kinopark cinema. Adventure lovers remembered the new Russian film Kraken. The film tells about the search for a missile submarine cruiser that disappeared during a secret mission in the Greenland Sea. In addition, viewers saw kind films about family, friendship and loyalty Batya-2. Ded and Palma-2. And the cartoon Jurassic Jungle was especially memorable for the young guests of the cinema park.

    Nykredit extends the offer period concerning the recommended, voluntary public tender offer for Spar Nord Bank A/S until 20 May 2025

    In accordance with section 4(1) of the Danish Takeover Order1, Nykredit Realkredit A/S (“Nykredit”) announced on 10 December 2024 that Nykredit intended to submit a voluntary public tender offer (the “Offer”) to acquire all shares in Spar Nord Bank A/S (“Spar Nord Bank”), with the exception of Spar Nord Bank’s treasury shares, for a cash price of DKK 210 per share, valuing the aggregated issued share capital of Spar Nord Bank at DKK 24.7 billion. As stated in the supplement dated April 2, 2025, the offer price has subsequently been increased to DKK 210.50 per share.

    On 8 January 2025, Nykredit published the offer document regarding the Offer (the “Offer Document”), as approved by the Danish FSA in accordance with section 11 of the Danish Takeover Order. In the Offer Document, the offer period was set to expire on 19 February 2025 at 23:59 (CET) (the “Initial Offer Period”). The Initial Offer Period was subsequently extended in supplements dated 18 February, 19 March and, most recently, 2 April 2025, where the offer period was extended to 24 April 2025 at 23:59 (CEST).

    Today, Nykredit published a supplement (the “Supplement”) to the Offer Document, which further extends the offer period for the Offer. The Supplement has been approved by the Danish FSA on 23 April 2025 in accordance with section 9(3)-(5) of the Danish Takeover Order. The Supplement should be read in conjunction with the Offer Document and the previous supplements.

    With this Supplement, Nykredit further extends the offer period, such that the Offer will expire on 20 May 2025 at 23:59 (CEST). Subsequently, any reference to the “Offer Period” in the Offer Document or other documents relating to the Offer will refer to the period commencing on the day of publication of the Offer Document on 8 January 2025 and ending on 20 May 2025 at 23:59 (CEST) (the “Extended Offer Period”).

    Nykredit has been informed by the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority that Nykredit’s merger notification regarding the Nykredit’s acquisition of sole control over Spar Nord Bank is considered complete as of 31 March 2025. Nykredit awaits the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority’s decision.

    The purpose of the extension is to provide Nykredit with time to obtain the approval from the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority required to complete the Offer. If the approval from the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority has not been granted by the expiry of the Extended Offer Period, Nykredit expects to extend the offer period further.

    The extension of the offer period entails that the expected completion of the Offer and settlement of the offer price to the Spar Nord Bank shareholders who have accepted the Offer will be extended correspondingly. Completion is subsequently expected to take place on 28 May 2025 (provided that the offer period is not extended further).

    At the time of this announcement, Nykredit holds 32.79 per cent of the shares in Spar Nord Bank.

    In the supplement dated 19 March 2025 to the Offer Document, Nykredit announced that a preliminary compilation of the acceptances that Nykredit had information about showed that, including the irrevocable undertakings, acceptances corresponding to more than 46 per cent of the share capital of Spar Nord Bank had been submitted, and that Nykredit’s ownership interest in Spar Nord Bank, together with the irrevocable undertakings and the binding acceptances submitted that Nykredit had information about, totalled more than 80 per cent of the total share capital (excluding treasury shares) of Spar Nord Bank, indicating that the 67 per cent acceptance limit stated in the Offer has been reached. The final result of the Offer will be determined on expiry of the offer period and published in accordance with section 21(3) of the Danish Takeover Order.

    Nykredit intends to delist Spar Nord Bank from trading on Nasdaq Copenhagen and complete a compulsory acquisition of the remaining Spar Nord Bank shareholders, provided that Nykredit has obtained the necessary ownership interest, and the Offer has been completed. Spar Nord Bank shareholders who have opted not to accept the Offer, should expect that Nykredit, provided that the Offer is completed, will take steps to combine Nykredit Bank A/S and Spar Nord Bank, which will result in a further increase in Nykredit’s ownership interest in Spar Nord Bank. Not later than in continuation of the combination, Nykredit thus expects to hold a sufficient ownership interest to be able to delist Spar Nord Bank from trading on Nasdaq Copenhagen and complete a compulsory acquisition of the remaining Spar Nord Bank shareholders.

    This Easter, Danmarks Nationalbank successfully moved payments in Danish kroner from the Danish payment system Kronos2 to the pan-European system, TARGET Services.

    By joining TARGET Services, Danmarks Nationalbank is united with the central banks of the Eurosystem in protecting payment processing against persistent cyber threats.

    “We strengthen security by working together with other European central banks in the payments area. This is especially important at a time when the cyber threat is high and increasing,” says Governor Ulrik Nødgaard.

    Danes will not experience any changes on a day-to-day basis, but going forward their payments will be handled via a more robust and future-proof platform. Over time, the vision is that citizens will more directly experience benefits such as easier and cheaper access to instant payments across currencies.

    “Economically it’s also advantageous to share payments infrastructure across countries. The economies of scale in a centralised system will provide savings on the ongoing costs of operation, maintenance and further development,” says Ulrik Nødgaard.

    The Danish krone will be the first currency outside the euro to handle both payments and securities transactions on TARGET Services. Over time, more currencies are expected to join.

    Danmarks Nationalbank has been working towards the migration since 2020. The schedule has been met and the total costs, shared between Danmarks Nationalbank and the banking sector, are lower than originally anticipated.

    FACTS:

    Since 2018, Danish securities transactions in Danish kroner have taken place in the European system for securities transactions. The system is called T2S and it is also part of TARGET Services.

    With the migration of the Danish krone to T2 and TIPS, the execution of payments and securities transactions in Danish kroner has been centralised on TARGET Services. Denmark is the first non-euro country to use T2, TIPS and T2S.

    Sveriges Riksbank is already on the instant payments system, TIPS, and decided in June 2024 to begin the process with the European Central Bank, ECB, for participation in the T2 liquidity management and payments system and the T2S securities transactions system.

    Norges Bank signed an agreement with the ECB in November 2024 to participate in TIPS and is also in discussions with the ECB about possible participation in T2.

    In September 2024, the Central Bank of Iceland announced that it has initiated an assessment of whether the Icelandic krona should join TARGET Services.

    Danish monetary policy will not be affected by the migration to TARGET Services. The existing monetary policy instruments used in the exercise of monetary policy by Danmarks Nationalbank are supported in the new infrastructure. These instruments are handled by Danmarks Nationalbank’s own system for monetary policy instruments and collateral.

    As of 22 April 2025, Danish market participants are able to settle wholesale and retail payments in Danish krone instantly in the Eurosystem’s T2 and TARGET Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS) services. Following a successful migration, Danmarks Nationalbank has become the first non-euro area central bank to participate in all three TARGET Services with its currency. Settlement in Danish krone has already been available in TARGET2-Securities since 2018.

    By using T2 and TIPS, Danish financial markets will benefit from common standards with the euro area, optimised liquidity management and strengthened IT security, allowing efficient and secure real-time settlement of wholesale and retail payments.

    This achievement is a result of the close collaboration between Danmarks Nationalbank and the Eurosystem since the decision to join T2 and TIPS was taken in 2020. Danish market participants have been conducting testing campaigns and migration rehearsals since September 2023 to ensure full readiness for onboarding to the two systems.

    With the inclusion of Danish krone, T2 activated its multi-currency function for the first time. TIPS now supports three currencies: the euro, the Swedish krona, which was onboarded in 2024, and the Danish krone. Including other currencies in TARGET Services strengthens European integration and enhances financial market efficiency beyond the euro area. Sweden has expressed an interest in joining additional TARGET Services, while other non-euro area countries, such as Norway and Iceland, have also expressed an interest in joining TARGET Services with their respective national currencies. An added benefit of multi-currency infrastructures is the potential for safe and efficient cross-currency settlement. Danmarks Nationalbank, Sveriges Riksbank and the ECB are collaborating on the implementation of such cross-currency capabilities in TIPS.

    Danmarks Nationalbank applied to join T2 and TIPS in 2020, and the currency participation agreement was signed in 2024. TARGET Services are developed and operated by the Eurosystem and provide safe and efficient financial market infrastructure services in central bank money, which supports financial integration and the capital markets union. Including branches and subsidiaries, more than 40,000 banks worldwide and all their customers can be reached via T2, which every six days processes a value close to the entire euro area GDP. TIPS settles instant retail payments at any time of day and on any day of the year.

    Selected cash flow items

    DNO’s share of crude oil from the Tawke license during the quarter has been sold to local buyers as the Iraq-Türkiye Pipeline remained closed. All payments are made in advance of loadings with the vast majority transferred directly into DNO’s international bank accounts.

    In the first quarter, DNO paid a dividend of NOK 0.3125 per share (totaling USD 27.4 million), which represents NOK 1.25 per share on an annualized basis. The Company had no tax payments or refunds during the quarter.

    In early March, DNO announced the transformative acquisition of Sval Energi Group AS and DNO subsequently paid a deposit of USD 22.5 million to the seller. The transaction is expected to be completed mid-year 2025.

    Also in March, DNO completed the private placement of USD 600 million of new five-year senior unsecured bonds. The early redemption of another bond, DNO04 (originally maturing in 2026), was completed on 10 April and did not impact the Q1 2025 cash flow.

    North Sea exploration

    DNO participated in two discoveries on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in the quarter, with combined recoverable resources of 26 million barrels of oil equivalent net to DNO (mid-points of ranges). The Mistral well in PL1119 (10 percent interest) was spudded on 22 December and completed on 25 March, and the operated Kjøttkake well (including a sidetrack) in PL1182 S (40 percent interest) was spudded on 26 January and completed on 27 March. A third well, Horatio in PL1109 (20 percent interest), was spudded on 5 February, completed on 22 March, and was dry.

    Quarter Highlights

    Baker Hughes expanded its leadership position in liquefied natural gas (“LNG”) in the first quarter, including a liquefaction train award from Bechtel for a project in North America, where the Company will provide four main refrigerant compressors driven by LM6000+ gas turbines and four expander-compressors. This award builds on the previously announced December 2024 award and further demonstrates the strength of the Company’s collaboration with Bechtel to support North America LNG development.

    During the quarter, Industrial & Energy Technology (“IET”) signed key strategic framework agreements with LNG operators. The Company agreed to provide gas turbines and refrigerant compressor technology, along with maintenance services, for Trains 4 to 8 of NextDecade’s Rio Grande LNG Facility. Baker Hughes also reached an agreement with Argent LNG to provide liquefaction and power solutions and related aftermarket services for its proposed 24 MTPA LNG export facility in Louisiana. The project will employ Baker Hughes’ NMBL™ modularized LNG solution, driven by the LM9000 gas turbine, while also utilizing the Company’s iCenter™ and Cordant™ digital solution, to enhance the plant’s operational efficiency.

    Baker Hughes also demonstrated its continuous commitment to critical gas infrastructure projects with a strategic win in the North America pipeline compression market. The award includes the provision of two gas compression stations for a total of 10 Frame 5/2E gas turbines and 10 centrifugal compressors, anti-surge valves and critical spare parts.

    In the first quarter, Baker Hughes made significant progress in reliable and sustainable power solutions deployment for data centers. In addition to being awarded over 350 MW of NovaLT™ turbines to power data centers with various other customers, the Company partnered with Frontier Infrastructure to accelerate the development of large-scale carbon capture and storage (“CCS”) and power solutions for data centers and industrial customers in the U.S. This partnership will leverage technologies and services across the Baker Hughes enterprise by providing CO₂ compression, NovaLT™ gas turbines, digital monitoring solutions, well construction and completion services.

    In continued demonstration of Gas Technology’s lifecycle offerings in IET, the Company received several aftermarket service awards during the quarter. In Algeria, the Gas Technology Services (“GTS”) team is partnering with SONATRACH to deliver an upgrade solution for the modernization of a key compressor station. In the Middle East, Gas Technology received multiple equipment and services awards to support one of the world’s largest gas processing plants. The scope includes rejuvenation of two existing gas turbines to drive new compressors and the supply of a third compression train to support production expansion.

    IET’s Industrial Solutions gained momentum with its Cordant™ Asset Performance Management (“APM”) solution, securing several contracts with customers across multiple regions. ADNOC Offshore will deploy the full APM suite to enhance production availability and efficiency. In the Americas, a large international oil company will conduct a proof of concept across multiple equipment trains, to support a shift from proactive to predictive maintenance. In Australia, the Company signed agreements to develop asset maintenance strategies for new mine sites supporting truck fleet maintenance.

    Oilfield Services & Equipment (“OFSE”) received a significant award from ExxonMobil Guyana to provide specialty chemicals and related services for its Uaru and Whiptail offshore greenfield developments in the country’s prolific Stabroek Block, highlighting the differentiated capabilities of our Production Solutions offering. For this multi-year contract, the scope will cover topsides, subsea, water injection and utility chemicals to help ExxonMobil Guyana achieve optimal production.

    OFSE continues to leverage the Company’s innovative solutions to help Petrobras unlock Brazil’s vast energy supply. In the quarter and following an open tender, Baker Hughes received a significant, multi-year fully integrated completions systems contract from Petrobras across multiple deepwater fields. A range of Baker Hughes’ technologies, including the new SureCONTROLTM Premium interval control valve, has been specifically tailored to meet the needs of the country’s offshore developments.

    OFSE secured a multi-year contract with Dubai Petroleum Establishment, for and on behalf of Dubai Supply Authority, to provide integrated coiled-tubing drilling services for the Company’s Margham Gas storage project. This follows a third-quarter 2024 IET award for integrated compressor line units for the same project, demonstrating growing commercial synergies across Baker Hughes’ diverse portfolio.

    The Company drove growth in Mature Assets Solutions, signing a multi-year framework agreement with Equinor to help establish a new Center of Excellence for Plug & Abandonment work in the North Sea. Based within OFSE’s operations in Bergen and Stavanger, Norway, this hub will ensure economical, reliable solutions are implemented to responsibly abandon each well, allowing Equinor to maximize value of their assets and allocate more resources to exploration and discovery.

    On the digital front, OFSE received an award from the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (“SOCAR”) to expand deployment of Leucipa™ automated field production solution for all its wells, including those with non-Baker Hughes electric submersible pumps, in the Absheron and Gunseli fields. Leucipa also marked its first deployment in Sub-Saharan Africa through an agreement with the NNPC/FIRST E&P joint venture, which will utilize the platform across its offshore wells in the Niger Delta.

    Consolidated Financial Results

    Revenue for the quarter was $6,427 million, a decrease of 13% sequentially and up $9 million year-over-year. The increase in revenue year-over-year was driven by an increase in IET and partially offset by a decrease in OFSE.

    The Company’s total book-to-bill ratio in the first quarter of 2025 was 1.0; the IET book-to-bill ratio was 1.1.

    Net income as determined in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America (“GAAP”), for the first quarter of 2025 was $402 million. Net income decreased $777 million sequentially and decreased $53 million year-over-year.

    Adjusted net income (a non-GAAP financial measure) for the first quarter of 2025 was $509 million, which excludes adjustments totaling $108 million. A list of the adjusting items and associated reconciliation from GAAP has been provided in Table 1b in the section titled “Reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP Financial Measures.” Adjusted net income for the first quarter of 2025 was down 27% sequentially and up 19% year-over-year.

    Depreciation and amortization for the first quarter of 2025 was $285 million.

    Adjusted EBITDA (a non-GAAP financial measure) for the first quarter of 2025 was $1,037 million, which excludes adjustments totaling $140 million. See Table 1a in the section titled “Reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP Financial Measures.” Adjusted EBITDA for the first quarter was down 21% sequentially and up 10% year-over-year.

    The sequential decrease in adjusted net income and adjusted EBITDA was primarily driven by lower volume in both segments, partially offset by productivity and structural cost-out initiatives. The year-over-year increase in adjusted net income and adjusted EBITDA was driven by increased volume in IET including higher proportionate growth in Gas Technology Equipment (“GTE”) and productivity, structural cost-out initiatives and higher pricing in both segments, partially offset by decreased volume and business mix in OFSE and cost inflation in both segments.

    Other Financial Items

    Remaining Performance Obligations (“RPO”) in the first quarter of 2025 ended at $33.2 billion, a decrease of $0.1 billion from the fourth quarter of 2024. OFSE RPO was $2.8 billion, down 7% sequentially, while IET RPO was $30.4 billion, up $300 million sequentially. Within IET RPO, GTE RPO was $11.9 billion and GTS RPO was $15.1 billion.

    Income tax expense in the first quarter of 2025 was $152 million.

    Other (income) expense, net in the first quarter of 2025 was $140 million, primarily related to changes in fair value for equity securities of $140 million.

    GAAP diluted earnings per share was $0.40. Adjusted diluted earnings per share (a non-GAAP financial measure) was $0.51. Excluded from adjusted diluted earnings per share were all items listed in Table 1b in the section titled “Reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP Financial Measures.”

    Cash flow from operating activities was $709 million for the first quarter of 2025. Free cash flow (a non-GAAP financial measure) for the quarter was $454 million. A reconciliation from GAAP has been provided in Table 1c in the section titled “Reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP Financial Measures.”

    Capital expenditures, net of proceeds from disposal of assets, were $255 million for the first quarter of 2025, of which $158 million was for OFSE and $83 million was for IET.

    EBITDA excludes depreciation and amortization of $226 million, $229 million, and $222 million for the three months ended March 31, 2025, December 31, 2024, and March 31, 2024, respectively. EBITDA margin is defined as EBITDA divided by revenue.

    OFSE orders of $3,281 million for the first quarter of 2025 decreased by 12% sequentially. Subsea and Surface Pressure Systems orders were $532 million, down 34% sequentially, and down 16% year-over-year.

    OFSE revenue of $3,499 million for the first quarter of 2025 was down 10% sequentially, and down 8% year-over-year.

    North America revenue was $922 million, down 5% sequentially. International revenue was $2,577 million, down 11% sequentially, with declines across all regions.

    Segment EBITDA for the first quarter of 2025 was $623 million, a decrease of $132 million, or 18% sequentially. The sequential decrease in EBITDA was primarily driven by lower volume, partially mitigated by productivity from structural cost-out initiatives.

    IET orders of $3,178 million for the first quarter of 2025 increased by $260 million, or 9% year-over-year. The increase was driven primarily by Gas Technology, up $326 million or 17% year-over-year.

    IET revenue of $2,928 million for the first quarter of 2025 increased $294 million, or 11% year-over-year. The increase was driven by Gas Technology Equipment, up $246 million or 20% year-over-year, and Climate Technology Solutions, up $95 million or 114% year-over-year.

    Segment EBITDA for the quarter was $501 million, an increase of $114 million, or 30% year-over-year. The year-over-year increase in segment EBITDA was driven by productivity, positive pricing and increased volume including higher proportionate growth in GTE, partially offset by cost inflation.

    Reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP Financial Measures

    Management provides non-GAAP financial measures because it believes such measures are widely accepted financial indicators used by investors and analysts to analyze and compare companies on the basis of operating performance (including adjusted EBITDA; adjusted net income attributable to Baker Hughes; and adjusted diluted earnings per share) and liquidity (free cash flow) and that these measures may be used by investors to make informed investment decisions. Management believes that the exclusion of certain identified items from several key operating performance measures enables us to evaluate our operations more effectively, to identify underlying trends in the business, and to establish operational goals for certain management compensation purposes. Management also believes that free cash flow is an important supplemental measure of our cash performance but should not be considered as a measure of residual cash flow available for discretionary purposes, or as an alternative to cash flow from operating activities presented in accordance with GAAP.

  • MIL-Evening Report: These 3 climate misinformation campaigns are operating during the election run-up. Here’s how to spot them

    Australia’s climate and energy wars are at the forefront of the federal election campaign as the major parties outline vastly different plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle soaring power prices.

    Meanwhile, misinformation about climate change has permeated public debate during the campaign, feeding false and misleading claims about renewable energy, gas and global warming.

    This is a dangerous situation. In Australia and globally, rampant misinformation has for decades slowed climate action – creating doubt, hindering decision-making and undermining public support for solutions.

    Here, we explain the history of climate misinformation in Australia and identify three prominent campaigns operating now. We also outline how Australians can protect themselves from misinformation as they head to the polls.

    Misinformation vs disinformation

    Misinformation is defined as false information spread unintentionally. It is distinct from disinformation, which is deliberately created to mislead.

    However, proving intent to mislead can be challenging. So, the term misinformation is often used as a general term to describe misleading content, while the term disinformation is reserved for cases where intent is proven.

    Disinformation is typically part of a coordinated
    campaign
    to influence public opinion. Such campaigns can be run by corporate interests, political groups, lobbying organisations or individuals.

    Once released, these false narratives may be picked up by others, who pass them on and create misinformation.

    Climate change misinformation in Australia

    In the 1980s and 1990s, Australia’s emissions-reduction targets were among the most ambitious in the world.

    At the time, about 60 companies were responsible for one-third of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. The government’s plan included measures to ensure these companies remained competitive while reducing their climate impact.

    Despite this, Australia’s resource industry began a concerted media campaign to oppose any binding emissions-reduction actions, claiming it would ruin the economy by making Australian businesses uncompetitive.

    This narrative persisted even when modelling repeatedly showed climate policies would have minimal economic impacts. The industry arguments eventually found their way into government policy.

    Momentum against climate action was also fuelled by a vocal group of climate change-denying individuals and organisations, often backed by multinational fossil fuel companies. These deniers variously claimed climate change wasn’t happening, it was caused by natural cycles, or wasn’t that a serious threat.

    These narratives were further exacerbated by false balance in media coverage, whereby news outlets, in an effort to appear neutral, often placed climate scientists alongside contrarians, giving the impression that the science was still unclear.

    Together, this created an environment in Australia where climate action was seen as either too economically damaging or simply unnecessary.

    What’s happening in the federal election campaign?

    Climate misinformation has been circulating in the following forms during this federal election campaign.

    1. Trumpet of Patriots

    Clive Palmer’s Trumpet of Patriots party ran an advertisement that claimed to expose “ the truth about climate change”. It featured a clip from a 2004 documentary, in which a scientist discusses data suggesting temperatures in Greenland were not rising. The scientist in the clip has since said his comments are now outdated.

    The type of misinformation is cherry-picking – presenting one scientific measurement at odds with the overwhelming scientific consensus.

    Google removed the ad after it was flagged as misleading, but only after it received 1.9 million views.

    2. Responsible Future Illawarra

    The Responsible Future campaign opposes wind turbines on various grounds, including cost, foreign ownership, power prices, effects on views and fishing, and potential ecological damage.

    Scientific evidence indicates offshore wind farms are relatively safe for marine life and cause less harm than boats and fishing gear. Some studies also suggest the infrastructure can create new habitat for marine life.

    However, a general lack of research into offshore wind and marine life has created uncertainty that groups such as Responsible Future Illawarra can exploit.

    It has cited statements by Sea Shepherd Australia to argue offshore wind farms damage marine life – however Sea Shepherd said its comments were misrepresented.

    The group also appears to have deliberately spread disinformation. This includes citing a purported research paper saying offshore wind turbines would kill up to 400 whales per year, when the paper does not exist.

    3. Australians for Natural Gas

    Australians for Natural Gas is a pro-gas group set up by the head of a gas company, which presents itself as a grassroots organisation. Its advertising campaign promotes natural gas as a necessary part of Australia’s fuel mix, and stresses its contribution to jobs and the economy.

    The ad campaign implicitly suggests climate action – in this case, a shift to renewable energy – is harmful to the economy, livelihoods and energy security. According to Meta’s Ad Library, these adds have already been seen more than 1.1 million times.

    Gas is needed in Australia’s current energy mix. But analysis shows it could be phased out almost entirely if renewable energy and storage was sufficiently increased and business and home electrification continues to rise.

    And of course, failing to tackle climate change will cause substantial harm across Australia’s economy.

    How to identify misinformation

    As the federal election approaches, climate misinformation and disinformation is likely to proliferate further. So how do we distinguish fact from fiction?

    One way is through “pre-bunking” – familiarising yourself with common claims made by climate change deniers to fortify yourself against misinformation

    Sources such as Skeptical Science offer in-depth analyses of specific claims.

    The SIFT method is another valuable tool. It comprises four steps:

    • Stop
    • Investigate the source
    • Find better coverage
    • Trace claims, quotes and media to their original sources.

    As the threat of climate change grows, a flow of accurate information is vital to garnering public and political support for vital policy change.

    The Secretary-General intends to travel to Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Francis. When we have more details we will share them.

    MOTHER EARTH DAY
    Today is International Mother Earth Day. In his message, the Secretary-General said Mother Earth is running a fever with last year being the hottest ever on record.
    We know what’s causing this sickness, he said, referring to the greenhouse gas emissions humanity is pumping into the atmosphere, but we also know the cure. All countries must create new climate action plans that align with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius – it is essential to avoid the worst of climate catastrophe, he said.
    And as a reminder, tomorrow the Secretary-General, together with President Lula of Brazil, will convene a group of Heads of State and Government for a virtual closed-door meeting to discuss strengthening global efforts to tackle the climate crisis and accelerate a just energy transition. The Secretary-General is expected to deliver some remarks on climate to you at the Security Council stakeout after the meeting. We’ll share more details as we have them.
    And what better way to celebrate Mother Earth Day than with a fashion show. We are unveiling a new tour guide uniform collection this evening at 6:15 p.m. during a fashion show in the Sputnik area of the Visitor’s Lobby. This is a collaboration between the Government of Sweden, the UN Office for Partnerships, the UN Department of Global Communications, and students from the Swedish School of Textiles at the University of Borås.     SENIOR PERSONNEL APPOINTMENT
    The Secretary-General is appointing of Ian Martin of the United Kingdom as Head of the Strategic Assessment, as part of his UN80 initiative, of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, that you all know as UNRWA.
    The Secretary-General is tasking Mr. Martin with conducting the Strategic Assessment in order to review UNRWA’s impact; implementation of its mandate under present political, financial, security and other constraints; and, consequences and risks for Palestine Refugees.
    As you all know, Ian Martin has had a distinguished service within the United Nations. He was involved in a number of strategic reviews, most recently as the Lead of the Independent Strategic Review of the UN Mission in Somalia and before then as a member of the
    High-Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations. We will share that announcement with you.

    OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY
    Meanwhile on the ground in Gaza, the situation continues to worsen. Our humanitarian colleagues report that hostilities across the Gaza Strip are continuing, with a devastating toll on civilians and critical infrastructure. Earlier today, local authorities reported attacks by Israeli forces that struck several heavy machinery vehicles across Gaza, halting solid waste and rubble removal services.
    Despite the ongoing hostilities and despite the fact that aid has not come in for more than 50 days, we and our partners are doing what we can to support people throughout the Strip. In Gaza City yesterday, the acting Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Suzanna Tkalec, led a mission to Al Shifa Hospital, where she and partners viewed work underway to install a desalination plant to serve dialysis patients at the facility.
    Our partners also report that several people suffering from severe acute malnutrition have been admitted to hospitals for treatment this week, with cases on the rise.
    Despite extremely low supplies, some 180 community kitchens in Gaza continue to operate every day. However, many of these kitchens are at imminent risk of shutting down since stocks are being depleted. Because of lack of cooking gas, families are resorting to burning plastic to cook their meals.

    1. The Commission supports Member States and third countries including through grants under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM)[1]. Beneficiaries from Nordic countries are involved in wildfire-related projects to enhance cross-border cooperation, promote resilience, and enhance research and readiness for extreme wildfires. F irefighting preparedness is being reinforced since 2019 with an aircraft of the rescEU fleet positioned in Sweden. The Commission also supports institutional capacity building through the UCPM peer review programme[2] and the Commission’s Expert Group on Forest Fires[3], which facilitates the exchange of good practices among the fire management services of European countries.

    2. The EU has invested EUR 372 million in 139 Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe[4] research projects covering the Arctic region. In line with the EU Arctic policy, research on permafrost thawing and informing climate mitigation strategies will continue in Horizon Europe. As of January 2025, the European Polar Coordination Office (EPCO) provides expert input to inform decisions on polar priorities and challenges. In 2024, a Commission Task Force issued a report on polar observations[5], including recommendations for permafrost and methane emissions monitoring.

    3. The EU’s Arctic Policy[6] and EU Green Alliances with Norway and Canada underline the EU’s fundamental interest in supporting multilateral Arctic cooperation. The EU promotes strong cooperation to address climate issues in the Arctic and boreal context and regularly engages with the Arctic Council and funds its research activities. It contributes to climate efforts in multilateral fora such as the International Maritime Organisation and the United Nation’s Climate Change Conferences.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Trump’s Greenland plan glosses over a history of segregation and discrimination for Indigenous Alaskans

    Donald Trump has wanted America to annex Greenland for a long time. He now has a concrete plan to do it. As reported by the New York Times, the president’s National Security Council has instructed several government departments to get to work on acquiring the island.

    Trump has made it clear that the use of military force remains on the table. But, at least for now, it seems the plan will rely mostly on persuasion.

    The first component is a coordinated advertising and social media campaign aimed at convincing Greenlanders that their future lies under the stars and stripes. The administration plans to tell the island’s residents that they will be more prosperous and more secure as part of the US.

    Driving that message home will be an uphill struggle. A poll in January 2025 found that 85% of Greenlanders oppose the idea of being annexed by the US. A parliamentary election in March also showed little support for it. The best-performing party was the pro-business Demokraatit, which wants to slow walk changes to Greenland’s international status.

    To overcome this resistance, the Trump administration is reportedly planning to appeal to shared ethnic and cultural ties between Inuit Greenlanders, who make up about 88% of the island’s population, and Indigenous peoples in the US state of Alaska. Greenlanders are likely to question that approach for a number of reasons.

    These ties are not completely imaginary. Greenland Inuit are descended from the Thule people, who migrated from Alaska around 1,000 years ago. There are similarities between the languages of Alaskan and Greenland Inuit.

    But these people have been separated by 2,000 miles for centuries, and in the interim have been shaped by their divergent histories. Though their languages are similar, they are generally not mutually intelligible.

    One of the main factors separating Alaskan and Greenland Inuit is their separate colonial histories. Greenland was colonised by Denmark, and Alaska by the US. The details of this colonial history are likely to give Greenlanders pause.

    Alaska became a US state in 1959. Before then, it was a territory – a colonial holding similar to Puerto Rico or Guam today. During its time as a territory, the US government and white settlers treated Alaska’s Indigenous people with a mixture of disinterest and malice.

    Until discrimination was outlawed by a state law in 1945, Indigenous Alaskans lived in a system of segregation and limited rights similar to the “Jim Crow” policies of the southern US. Indigenous Alaskans, like African Americans in the southern states, were not guaranteed the right to vote, and “whites only” signs were commonplace in businesses.

    During the second world war, the US government feared a Japanese attack on the Aleutian islands, which form part of Alaska. As a result, it forcibly evacuated the Indigenous population, burning their villages to prevent invading Japanese troops from using them as housing. Evacuees were forced to live in unsanitary camps on the mainland for years, where more than one in ten died.

    The US government justified this as a geopolitical necessity. But given that great power politics is also behind its drive to control Greenland, the island’s residents should question whether their rights will be respected if they conflict with another perceived geopolitical necessity.

    Buying favour

    Another plank of the Trump administration’s plan is financial. The White House apparently wants to replace the subsidy that Greenland currently receives from Denmark with a payment of US$10,000 (£7,600) per resident. It’s not clear if this money is intended to go directly to the population, or to the island’s central government.

    This works out at just over US$568 million (£429 million) a year. If it’s a subsidy for the central government, then it’s slightly less than the island currently receives from Denmark. And if it’s a payment directly to the population, then it’s unclear how public services on the island would be funded.

    Here again, a look at the experience of Indigenous Alaskans is instructive. Indigenous Alaskans, who receive various US government services through the Bureau of Indian Affairs, have a much higher poverty rate than the general population, lower rates of health coverage and worse educational outcomes.

    They also generally don’t live as long. According to the most recent figures, the life expectancy for Indigenous Alaskans is 70.4 years – much lower than the statewide average of 74.5.

    Economic development – or, perhaps more accurately, exploiting Greenland’s natural resources – is also part of Trump’s plan. Trump is apparently interested in Greenland’s “rare earth minerals, copper, gold, uranium and oil”.

    Greenland does indeed have vast mineral wealth. But it is unclear if it can be safely accessed in the island’s current inhospitable environment.

    Such resource extraction could also easily lead to environmental damage, as it has done in Alaska. In 1989, for example, the Exxon Valdez oil supertanker spilled more than 10 million gallons of crude oil in Alaska’s Prince William Sound.

    Meanwhile, without strong regulation and taxation, the wealth generated could easily accrue to corporations rather than Greenlanders.

    There is a long history of colonising powers claiming that only they, rather than “the natives”, can deliver prosperity and progress to a country. Trump’s plan, which tries to turn the experience of Indigenous Alaskans into one that Greenlanders should want to emulate, fits squarely into this genre.

    But the history of US involvement in Alaska and its treatment of Indigenous Alaskans gives lie to that story. For Greenlanders to trade their sovereignty to the US in return for a guarantee of prosperity and security would be a risky gamble indeed.

  • MIL-OSI Global: The focus on manufacturing in the federal election misses what could truly help Canadian workers

    Canada’s major political parties have been pledging support for the manufacturing sector ahead of next week’s election, but Canada’s working class is much broader than just manufacturing.

    Canadians are on edge because as many as 600,000 jobs are at stake due to tariffs levied by United States President Donald Trump.

    But the focus on manufacturing obscures what truly ails the working class in an advanced economy like Canada’s. Manufacturing’s share of employment hovers at around 8.9 per cent, while nearly 80 per cent of Canadians work in the service sector.

    A recent report from the non-partisan Cardus think tank notes that Canada’s working class today is “likely to be a female, recently immigrated worker in the services-producing sector. The new working class, in other words, is now more personified by a Walmart cashier or an Amazon delivery driver than a General Motors factory worker or a Domtar mill hand.”

    Manufacturing gives way to services

    So why is there such emphasis on manufacturing?

    It’s easy to understand. Manufacturing has been essential to industrialization, from the British Empire to China’s unprecedented growth in recent years.

    The late British-Hungarian economist Nicholas Kaldor argued that manufacturing is the engine of growth due to increasing returns to scale, strong links to other sectors and its role in technological development.

    But as countries become wealthier, an increased demand for services follows, creating jobs in that sector. Manufacturing sectors in wealthier countries tend to invest in labour-saving technologies. The U.S., for example, has seen manufacturing employment fall while output has increased.

    Labour-intensive sectors like clothing cannot compete with Bangladeshi wages, but discussions about manufacturing jobs in Canada and other advanced economies too often focus on wage competition instead of job losses through automation and increasing productivity.

    There were losers when the globalization era began, but countries like Canada and the U.S. are wealthier today than they were in 1994, when the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed. As American economist Jeffrey Sachs has pointed out, governments have failed to redistribute the wealth created by gains from trade to those at the bottom of the income scale.

    Four policies of a real working-class agenda

    There are several key policies that politicians should be proposing that would really help the working class.

    First is one that all politicians are talking about: building more housing.

    Second is related to key elements of social reproduction — that is, care work. There must be strong funding commitments to ensure a national childcare system functions properly.

    With Canada on track to experience a surge of its elderly population, long-term care also needs to be a focus. Personal support workers must earn a living wage and must have better working conditions. Canada’s aging population is also why decreased immigration is a bad idea.

    The third policy requires the federal and provincial governments to get serious about active labour market policies. This means building a labour market training system that actually works, something Canada has lacked.

    These policies are generally not implemented in liberal market economies like Canada and the U.S.

    But in countries like Sweden with active labour market policies in place, 80 per cent of the population has a favourable opinion of robots and AI compared to two-thirds of Americans who are concerned about technological job loss. The state’s ability — or lack of it — to provide social protections and job re-training has real impacts on how people perceive technological change.

    Canada also needs to recognize foreign credentials. Its reluctance to do so has had a negative impact on the economic prospects of immigrants. Canada should also consider making higher education free.

    The fourth policy involves better worker protections that include a strengthened Employment Insurance that is easier to qualify for, improved protections for gig workers and increasing union membership.

    Apart from the public sector, Canadian unions have not fared well organizing in service industries. Unions need to make a serious effort to organize in retail, food service, the gig economy and logistics, despite the challenges. Canadian unions may find that they have little choice but to do so, as their presence in the private sector continues to decline.

    Inequality, wealth redistribution

    The most significant barrier of these four policy proposals is that most require an increased redistribution of wealth. Canada over the past several decades has retreated from wealth redistribution and as a result, economic inequality has surged.

    White blue-collar workers in the U.S. in areas hit by factory job losses swung to Trump. A Canadian version of this is happening with some blue-collar unions endorsing the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre.

    Fixating on manufacturing is not a solution. After 2012, China began shedding manufacturing employment. Job demand in Chinese manufacturing today is in sectors that require skilled workers for software and AI systems. Services like retail, technology and transportation are also drawing in workers from manufacturing.

    Building infrastructure, green energy

    Not all blue-collar work will disappear. Canada needs labour to build not just homes, but high-speed rail.

    Active labour market policies will be key to ensuring manufacturing workers transition into building infrastructure and green energy. Canada can also remain competitive in areas like aluminum production .

    Policymakers need to understand our post-industrial moment, and focus on a just transition for manufacturing workers.

    Labour and progressive movements have long championed a just transition for fossil fuel workers. Like factory workers, fossil fuel workers have been courted by right-wing politicians who tell them environmental policies will destroy their jobs. At the same time, oil companies automate their jobs anyway.

    These policies are not easy to achieve, but there are few other options for Canada if it wants to be carbon-free, open to the world and more equal. Canada’s economic nostalgia for manufacturing is ultimately strange given it’s also a common talking point of Trump, a politician who’s wildly unpopular in Canada.

    Safe Zephyrus operated at full capacity during March, achieving 100 per commercial uptime.

    Outlook of 2025

    Revenue for 2025 is expected to be EUR 108-130 million and adjusted EBITA EUR 4.7-7.7 million.

    The first quarter of this year was challenging for Siili as the sluggish market conditions prevailed, and we took concrete steps to improve the profitability of our operations. However, many positive developments also occurred during the initial months of the year while we focused with determination on the implementation of our strategy.

    The Group’s revenue in January-March amounted to just under EUR 30 million, broadly at the previous year’s level. Adjusted EBITA for the first quarter amounted to EUR 1.3 million, 4.2% of revenue. Profitability came in slightly weaker than last year, in line with our expectations. However, when comparing to the previous year’s result, it is worth noting that the adjusted EBITA for the comparison period was improved by the temporary layoffs implemented during Q1 2024.

    During the initial months of the year, we have seen encouraging developments in the market, with our customers moving from testing artificial intelligence to firm transition programmes. In March, we launched a new Advisory service to accelerate our customers’ digital business and adoption of AI.

    An example of how we support our customers on their AI journey is an AI-assisted training programme we delivered for Alma Media at the beginning of the year. It is a tailored solution that helps Alma Media to integrate AI seamlessly into its operations and culture.

    Siili also worked with Varma to modernise a key system. The objective of the modernisation was to simplify the maintenance of the system and improve its scalability and development potential, ensuring it continues to meet Varma’s business needs reliably into the future. The work was carried out in stages and in close cooperation with the client, ensuring the continuous operability of the system.

    During the opening months of the year, we have also built new cooperation networks that allow extensive utilisation of Siii’s expertise. In March, Siili was accepted as a member in the Digital Defence Ecosystem, which brings together Finland’s leading technology companies to support national defence capabilities and the security of supply. Siili also became an NVIDIA partner earlier this year as part of the NVIDIA Partner Network (NPN), which significantly supports us in bringing scalable, production-ready AI solutions to our customers.

    In February–March, we adjusted our competence profile to align with the strategy we released last year, and current market conditions. Following change negotiations started in February, we will reduce 25 roles from Siili Finland’s functions and 8 from Siili Auto Finland. Actions affecting personnel are always difficult for the organisation, but we believe these adjustments will strengthen Siili’s competitiveness and profitability. With these measures, we estimate that we will achieve a total of 2.2 million euros in annual cost savings.

    To strengthen Siili’s competence profile, we concluded the acquisition of a majority stake in Integrations Group Oy at the beginning of the year. Integrations Group is now part of Siili, and the collaboration has started strongly. We continue to strengthen our competence profile in line with the strategy also through recruitment and human resources development.

However, many positive developments also occurred during the initial months of the year while we focused with determination on the implementation of our strategy.

    The Group’s revenue in January-March amounted to just under EUR 30 million, broadly at the previous year’s level. Adjusted EBITA for the first quarter amounted to EUR 1.3 million, 4.2% of revenue. Profitability came in slightly weaker than last year, in line with our expectations. However, when comparing to the previous year’s result, it is worth noting that the adjusted EBITA for the comparison period was improved by the temporary layoffs implemented during Q1 2024.

    During the initial months of the year, we have seen encouraging developments in the market, with our customers moving from testing artificial intelligence to firm transition programmes. In March, we launched a new Advisory service to accelerate our customers’ digital business and adoption of AI.

    An example of how we support our customers on their AI journey is an AI-assisted training programme we delivered for Alma Media at the beginning of the year. It is a tailored solution that helps Alma Media to integrate AI seamlessly into its operations and culture.

    Siili also worked with Varma to modernise a key system. The objective of the modernisation was to simplify the maintenance of the system and improve its scalability and development potential, ensuring it continues to meet Varma’s business needs reliably into the future. The work was carried out in stages and in close cooperation with the client, ensuring the continuous operability of the system.

    During the opening months of the year, we have also built new cooperation networks that allow extensive utilisation of Siii’s expertise. With these measures, we estimate that we will achieve a total of 2.2 million euros in annual cost savings.

    President Donald Trump has issued an executive order that would block state laws seeking to tackle greenhouse gas emissions – the latest salvo in his administration’s campaign to roll back United States’ climate action.

    Under Trump, the US has clearly abdicated climate leadership. But the US has in fact obstructed climate action for decades – largely due to damaging actions by the powerful fossil fuel industry.

    In 20 years studying attacks on climate science and the powerful forces at work behind the scenes, I’ve come to think the United States is simply not going to lead on climate action. The fossil fuel industry has so poisoned the well of public debate in the US that it’s unlikely the nation will lead on the issue in our lifetimes.

    Australia, on the other hand, has enormous potential.

    I recently visited Australia from Harvard University for a series of public talks. This nation is very close to my heart. I trained as a mining geologist and spent three years in outback South Australia, before returning to academia.

    The vacuum Trump has created on climate policy provides a chance for other countries to lead. Australia has much more to gain from the clean-energy future than it stands to lose – and your climate action could be pivotal.

    The climate crisis: a long time coming

    Scientists first warned against burning fossil fuels way back in the 1950s. When the US Clean Air Act was passed in 1970, the words “weather” and “climate” were included because scientists had already explained to Congress that carbon dioxide was a pollutant with serious — even dire — effects.

    In the late 1980s, scientists at NASA observed changes in the climate system that could only be explained by the extra heating effect of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The predictions had become reality.

    When George H.W. Bush ran successfully for president in 1988, he promised to use the power of the “White House effect” to fight the “greenhouse effect”. In 1992, Bush and other world leaders gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to sign the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Together, 178 countries promised action to prevent “dangerous anthropogenic interference” with Earth’s climate. But that action never came.

    Trump has undoubtedly been bad news for global climate action. He makes preposterous claims about science and is dismantling the federal agencies responsible for supporting climate science and maintaining climate data.

    But the US has long failed to play its part in cutting dangerous greenhouse gas emissions. The reason for this lies largely outside the White House.

    A long-running campaign of disinformation

    The fossil fuel industry has known about climate change for as long as scientists have.

    In the late 1970s and early 1980s, scientists at Esso (later ExxonMobil) actively researched the topic, building climate models and coauthoring scientific papers.

    The scientists informed their managers of the risk of catastrophic damage if the burning of oil, gas and coal continued unabated. They even suggested the company might need a different business model – one not so dependent on fossil fuels.

    But managers at ExxonMobil made a fateful decision: to turn from information to disinformation. Working in tandem with other oil, gas and coal companies, as well as automobile and aluminium manufacturers, ExxonMobil launched an organised campaign, sustained over decades, to block climate action by casting doubt on the underlying science.

    They ran ad campaigns in national and local newspapers insisting the science was too unsettled to warrant action. They created “astroturf” organisations that only pretended to be green, and funded “third-party allies” to argue that proposed remedies would be too expensive, cost jobs and damage the economy.

    The company funded outlier scientists to publish papers claiming atmospheric warming was the result of natural climate variability. They pressured journalists to give equal time to “their side” of the story in the name of “balance”.

    Over the next three decades, whenever any meaningful climate policy seemed to be gaining traction, the industry and its allies lobbied Congress and state legislatures to block it. So, neither Democratic nor Republican administrations were able to undertake meaningful climate action.

    While people were dying in climate-charged floods and fires, the fossil fuel industry persuaded a significant proportion of the US population, including Trump, that the whole thing might just be a hoax.

    Rise up Australia

    In a matter of weeks after becoming president, Trump pulled out of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming, shut down government websites hosting climate data, and withdrew support for research that dares to mention the word “climate”.

    This has created a vacuum that other countries, including Australia, can step up to fill.

    Few countries have more to lose from climate change than Australia. The continent has already witnessed costly and devastating wildfires and floods — affecting remote areas and major cities. It’s not unreasonable to worry that in coming years, significant parts of Australia could become uninhabitable.

    Like the US, Australia has a powerful fossil fuel industry that has disproportionately influenced its politics. Unlike the US, however, that industry is based mainly on coal for export, which Australians do not depend on in their daily lives.

    And Australia is truly a lucky country. It has unsurpassed potential to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy.

    More than 15 years ago, Australian researchers in the Zero Carbon Australia project offered a blueprint for how the country could eliminate fossil fuel use entirely. Since then, renewable energy has only become cheaper and more efficient.

    South Australia has proved the point: the state was 100% reliant on fossil fuels for electricity in 2002, but now more than 70% comes from renewables.

    Across Australia, the share of renewable electricity generation is growing. Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland are vying for second place after SA. It’s fascinating to watch the National Electricity Market balance supply and demand in real time, where a large proportion of the electricity comes from rooftop solar.

    For decades, the fossil fuel industry has told the public our societies can’t manage without fossil fuels. Large parts of Australia have proved it’s just not so. The rest of the nation can follow that lead, and model the energy transition for the world. Here’s your chance.
