  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Policy Address: Reform for Enhancing Development and Building Our Future Together

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region

The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, today (October 16) announced his third Policy Address entitled “Reform for Enhancing Development and Building Our Future Together”, setting out a range of initiatives to create new impetus for economic development, improve people’s livelihood and enhance their quality of life.         Mr Lee said, “In this Policy Address, I will continue to follow through the ‘four proposals’ put forward by President Xi Jinping in his important speech delivered on July 1, 2022. I will also outline our vision and objectives for reforms and changes, as well as the related key measures and key performance indicators.     “Reform is a continuous process. Over the past two years, my team and I have focused on economic growth and on improving people’s livelihood through development, with the well-being of the people of Hong Kong close to our hearts. This Policy Address will deepen our reforms and explore new growth areas.”Consolidate and enhance Hong Kong’s status as an international financial, shipping and trade centre      Hong Kong has established strengths as an international centre for finance, shipping and trade, which are closely intertwined and can be developed in a synergistic and complementary manner.     On the financial front, the Policy Address sets out the strategic development of Hong Kong as an international financial centre on all fronts. It strives to reinforce Hong Kong’s status as the world’s largest offshore Renminbi business hub, enhance the asset and securities markets, and develop Hong Kong into an international gold trading market through measures such as building world-class gold storage facilities and strengthening the trading mechanism and regulatory framework. This will in turn drive demand for related services such as collateral and loan businesses, opening up new growth areas of the financial sector.     On the shipping side, the existing Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board will be reconstituted into the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Development Board. Additional funding will be provided to enhance its research capabilities, strengthen its Mainland and overseas promotional work and step up manpower training, encouraging more Mainland and overseas maritime service enterprises to establish presence in Hong Kong, promoting the sustainable development of Hong Kong’s maritime industry. The Government will advance the development of Hong Kong into a green maritime centre, while at the same time exploring the introduction of tax concessions and facilitate international commodity exchanges to set up accredited warehouses in Hong Kong, so as to establish a commodity trading ecosystem, especially for the storage and delivery of non-ferrous metal products, further promoting the development of Hong Kong’s maritime and trading services.     In respect of the trade sector, the Government will establish a high-value-added supply chain service centre. Through measures such as enriching a high value-added supply chain services mechanism and enhancing export credit services, as well as making good use of the new opportunities brought about by the Second Agreement Concerning Amendment to the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) Agreement on Trade in Services, the Government will seek to attract Mainland and overseas enterprises to set up their headquarters or corporate divisions in Hong Kong. The Government will continue to vigorously expand Hong Kong’s global economic and trade networks, with particular emphasis on strengthening Hong Kong’s economic and trade ties with and marketing efforts in emerging markets, so as to enable Hong Kong to exert a greater role in the country’s opening up to the world. Moreover, the Government will reduce the import duty on liquor, fostering trading of liquor and boosting development of high value-added industries.Develop new quality productive forces tailored to local conditions     The core element of new quality productive forces is to achieve high quality economic development through technological empowerment. The Government is striving to expedite Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology (I&T) centre. On top of the additional investment put in over the past two years, a $10 billion I&T Industry-Oriented Fund will be set up to guide more market capital to invest in specified emerging and future industries of strategic importance, including life and health technology and artificial intelligence. The Government will also launch the I&T Accelerator Pilot Scheme to attract professional start-up service providers to set up accelerator bases in Hong Kong, fostering the robust growth of start-ups.     The Policy Address also proposed the establishment of the Working Group on Developing Low-altitude Economy. Starting with projects on low-altitude applications, the working group will designate specific venues for such purposes, draw up regulations and design the institutional set-up,  study and map out plans to develop the required infrastructure and networks, and promote interface with the Mainland, pushing forward development of the low-altitude economy.    At the same time, the Government is committed to promoting new energy development, such as green maritime fuel, sustainable aviation fuel and hydrogen energy. The Government will also expedite the reform of the approval mechanism for drugs and medical devices, establish the Real-World Study and Application Centre, and join hands with Shenzhen to establish the GBA Clinical Trial Collaboration Platform to enhance Hong Kong’s clinical trial capability and accelerate registration of new drugs, developing Hong Kong into an international health and medical innovation hub.Build Hong Kong into an international hub for high-calibre talents     To boost synergy and effectiveness of policies, the Policy Address introduced the establishment of the Committee on Education, Technology and Talents to co-ordinate and drive the integrated development of education, technology and talents. In addition to reforming various aspects of the talent admission regime to build a quality talent pool for long-term development, the Government will endeavour to create the “Study in Hong Kong” brand to attract overseas students, launch a pilot scheme to support the market to flexibly increase the supply of self-financed and private student hostels, and map out the development plan of the Northern Metropolis University Town. These measures aim to expedite the development of Hong Kong into an international hub for post-secondary education, bringing in more global high-calibre talents.Promote integrated development of culture, sports and tourism and foster economic diversification     Promoting integrated development of culture, sports and tourism is the objective of this term of Government in setting up the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau. The Government will reinforce the development of the West Kowloon Cultural District to take a leading role in establishing an industry chain for the arts and culture and creative industries of Hong Kong. The Government will also strive to develop the Kai Tak Sports Park into a sports and mega event landmark, building an international sports mega event hub. The Government will publish the Development Blueprint for Hong Kong’s Tourism Industry 2.0, putting emphasis on promoting areas including culture, sports, ecology and mega events, with a view to revitalising Hong Kong’s tourism industry. A Working Group on Developing Tourist Hotspots will be set up to strengthen cross-departmental co-ordination, and to identify and develop tourist hotspots of high popularity and with strong appeal in various districts.     Hong Kong is facing economic restructuring. To assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to cope with the prevailing challenges, the Government will put in place a range of support initiatives. Key measures include: relaunching the principal moratorium to offer SMEs flexibility in managing cash flows; injecting $1 billion into the BUD Fund (Dedicated Fund on Branding, Upgrading and Domestic Sales) to facilitate upgrading of enterprises; expanding the scope of the Digital Transformation Support Pilot Programme to cover the industries of tourism and personal services; and launching the Incentive Scheme for Recurrent Exhibitions 2.0. In addition, a Working Group on Promoting Silver Economy will be set up to implement measures in five areas, namely consumption, industry, quality assurance, financial and security arrangements, and productivity, meeting the growing needs of the elderly and help the industry to seize business opportunities.Take forward the Northern Metropolis as growth engine and deepen GBA collaboration     To take forward the development of the Northern Metropolis, it was announced in the Policy Address to explore the establishment of a pilot industrial park in the Northern Metropolis by granting it to a company established and led by the Government. The company will, in accordance with the Government’s industrial policies, be responsible for formulating the park’s development and operation strategies. To expedite the development, the Government will adopt, on a pilot basis, a large-scale land-disposal approach, for collective development by successful bidders. In addition, the Steering Committee on the Hong Kong Shenzhen I&T Park in the Loop, chaired by the Chief Executive, will formulate the overall strategy, planning and layout for the development of the Hong Kong Park. The Development Outline for the Hong Kong Park of the Hetao Shenzhen Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone will be published later this year. Improve people’s livelihood in pursuit of happiness     This year, the Policy Address outlined a number of new measures on different livelihood areas, including land creation and housing construction and healthcare, making Hong Kong a better place to live and enjoy life.     On housing, a system on the renting of subdivided units (SDUs) in residential buildings will be devised, through legislation, to tackle the long-standing problem of SDUs at its roots in an orderly manner. The Government will also enhance the housing ladder to allow more people to realise their aspiration for home ownership.     Regarding healthcare, as noted in the Policy Address, the Government will deepen the reform of the healthcare system, strengthen public and primary healthcare services and promote the development of primary healthcare on all fronts, and boost healthy fertility. The Government also supports the plan, by local universities, to establish a third medical school. The Government will set aside sites in Ngau Tam Mei to build a new campus and an integrated medical teaching and research hospital.     To improve people’s livelihood, the Government will continue to take forward and enhance various measures for targeted poverty alleviation and focusing on different needs of the underprivileged. Meanwhile, the Government will regularise the funding provision for Care Teams and increase funding in the next term of service to strengthen support for their work. The Policy Address also proposed to reform the roles of the Employees Retraining Board to devise skills-based training programmes and strategies for the entire workforce, and lift the restriction on educational attainment of trainees.     Mr Lee concluded, “This Policy Address deepens the reforms that I have introduced since I became Chief Executive. It presents enhanced measures to boost the economy and improve people’s livelihood. It seeks to address the prevailing needs of our people, while mapping our vision and long-term goals for building a brighter future for Hong Kong. I am confident that Hong Kong will continue to go from strength to strength and attain new heights. Through our united efforts to reform and innovate, our economy will go even stronger and our people will lead a better life, making Hong Kong a shining city.”     A Supplement offering more backgrounds and details of various policy measures has been compiled with this year’s Policy Address. • MIL-OSI Russia: Rosneft held regional GTO competitions for the first time

MILES AXLE Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Source: Rosneft – Rosneft – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Rosneft organized for the first time regional competitions to pass the standards of the All-Russian physical culture and sports complex “Ready for Labor and Defense” (GTO).

The competition, which took place in Tyumen, was attended by 180 amateur athletes from 17 subsidiaries of the Company. The geography of the participants covered 6 regions of Rosneft’s presence: Tyumen Oblast, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug-Yugra, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Sakha Republic, Udmurt Republic and Irkutsk Oblast.

Supporting mass sports in the regions of its operations is one of Rosneft’s key priorities. The Company’s athletes take part in all major mass sports competitions held in our country and win prizes. Rosneft supports amateur sports and carries out large-scale work to popularize a healthy lifestyle among both its employees and the population in the regions of its operations.

Over the course of two days, participants demonstrated their strength, agility and endurance by passing GTO standards in 13 disciplines, including 50m swimming, short and long distance running, kettlebell snatch, long jump, bends, pull-ups, push-ups and shooting.

87 oil industry athletes passed the GTO standards for the first time this year. The oldest participant in the competition was 62 years old at the time of the competition.

In addition, the event included competitions in functional all-around. On the first day of the competition, teams of three people overcame 6 tests: rowing, push-ups, jumping on a box, long jump, squats and throwing a ball into a basket. On the second day, athletes competed for victory in the game “Sniper” and a mixed relay race over different distances.

The award ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the All-Russian Physical Culture and Health Complex “Ready for Labor and Defense” in the Tyumen Region, Honored Master of Sports of Russia Natalia Proskuryakova. The winners of the competition were awarded diplomas, cups and certificates.

Rosneft is holding GTO competitions for the second year in a row, which are attracting more and more employees of the Company. This year, about 800 employees representing 71 subsidiaries and the central management office of the Company took part in the competitions in Moscow.

    Reference:

The development of the sports movement is one of Rosneft’s key priorities. For active support and systematic work to popularize the GTO complex, in 2023 Rosneft became the winner of the Champion award, established by the Roscongress Foundation’s sports platform RK-Sport and the Reputation educational forum.

The All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex “Ready for Labor and Defense” (GTO) is a full-fledged program and regulatory framework for the physical education of the country’s population, aimed at developing mass sports and improving the health of the nation. The GTO complex provides for preparation for the implementation and direct implementation by the population of various age groups (from 6 to 70 years and older) of established regulatory requirements for three difficulty levels corresponding to the gold, silver and bronze badges of distinction “Ready for Labor and Defense” (GTO).

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Updated plans to protect Pevensey and Eastbourne from flooding

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

Efforts include reversing power of the storms as public gets to shape project

The Environment Agency wants people in Eastbourne and Pevensey to come to drop-in events to hear about plans to protect the area from flooding and coastal erosion

Moving thousands of tonnes of sand by lorry to fight the forces of nature along the Sussex shore.

Loosening stormy weather’s grip on how we live and work is behind plans to protect 10,000 homes and businesses in the Eastbourne area.

Local people now have the chance to see how the Environment Agency will defend the coastline from flooding. Drop-in events are being held in the coming days across Eastbourne and Pevensey, and the plans have also been posted online.

The Met Office warns of sea levels rising by at least a metre by the end of the century, so the Environment Agency is laying out proposals to defend 15kms of coast either side of the Eastbourne from flooding and erosion, and wants feedback from the public.

The Environment Agency estimates some 30,000 cubic square metres of sand and shingle is swept eastwards from Holywell to Cooden Beach every year.

Quite literally shifting sands in huge dumper trucks back the other way is a key plank of phase one of proposals to protect 18,000 homes and businesses, transport links and other services. With the sand and shingle back in place, the sea will lose power as it hits the beach.

Nick Gray, flood-risk manager for the Environment Agency in Sussex, said:

“It’s about adapting to the changing climate. We know far more now. Sea levels could rise by 10cm in the next ten years, and around a metre by 2100.

“Small changes to the beach management that already happens will put us in a better place to the end of the 2040s and beyond as storms get more frequent and intense.

“Everyone has seen more wet weather and in greater bursts over the past couple of years. The named storms put a greater focus on preparing for the next one.

“We can make a difference if we all play our part. The public are welcome at the drop-ins held across Eastbourne and Pevensey. They should also sign-up for free flood alerts and warnings at http://www.gov.uk/flood or on Floodline: 0345 988 1188.”

A football club, community centre and church hall will host events to outline phase one of the 15-year Pevensey Bay to Eastbourne Coastal Management Scheme, a project between the Environment Agency and 4 local councils, East Sussex, Eastbourne, Rother and Wealden. It’s one of the largest coastal flood-risk schemes in the country.

The Met Office says sea levels will rise by about a metre by the end of the century, while the Environment Agency calls on everyone to check their flood-risk and learn how to deal with flooding

Other ideas to protect the area from flooding and coastal erosion include building up the coastline by importing sand and shingle from the sea bed to the beach to widen the coastal squeeze – the gap between the sea and the properties and infrastructure like roads and the prom.

The Environment Agency also wants to raise the height of the many timber groynes that punctuate the beach to stop the constant movement of sand and shingle from west to east and to hold back floodwater.

The drop-ins to see and give feedback on the proposals, plus an online presentation of the work, kick off Flood Action Week, between 14 and 20 October, a concerted effort by the Environment Agency to make people recognise their flood-risk.

Environment Agency staff will be on hand at all three venues to explain the flood-protection scheme. All 3 sessions run from 6pm to 7.30pm.

    • Tuesday 15 October: Eastbourne Borough football club, Priory Lane, Langney BN23 7QH.
    • Tuesday 22 October: Sovereign Harbour Community Centre, The Crumbles, Pevensey Bay Rd, Eastbourne BN23 6JH.
    • Friday 1 November: St Wilfrid’s Church Hall, 2 Collier Rd, Pevensey Bay BN24 6EZ.

The online presentation of phase one can be found at: https://consult.environment-agency.gov.uk/solent-and-south-downs/pevensey-to-eastbourne-phase-1-survey, where the public can also give feedback.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Stauber Introduces Legislation to Award Congressional Gold Medals to the “Miracle on Ice” Olympic Hockey Team

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08)

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) introduced the Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act, which would award 3 Congressional Gold Medals to the members of the 1980 United States Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team for their historic victory over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics. One of the Congressional Gold Medals will be placed on display in Minnesota’s Eighth Congressional District at the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minnesota. Joining Congressman Stauber in its introduction are Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (NY-21), Congressman Mike Quigley (IL-5), and Congressman Bill Keating (MA-9). Congressman Stauber released the following statement:

“The Miracle on Ice team unified our nation during a time of deep political tension. These young men fearlessly defeated the Soviet Union, which was at the time one of the greatest hockey teams to ever play. Their grit, determination, and pure patriotism inspired the world.

I am honored to introduce this legislation because 12 players on this team and their legendary coach were Minnesotans. Minnesotans played an integral role in defeating the Soviet Union, and these men should forever be remembered as American hockey heroes.”

“It is an honor to represent Lake Placid where our 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team taught our nation how to believe in miracles when they defeated the dominant Soviet Union hockey team during the Cold War. Our North Country community is proud to be home of this historic and inspiring event and as we work to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice,” this legislation honors our Olympic victors for their legendary achievement,” saidCongresswoman Elise Stefanik.

“As a lifelong hockey fan, I remember watching the “Miracle on Ice” game and the wave of inspiration experienced across the country. With that win, our team and our nation showed the world that democracy will always prevail over tyranny – on and off the ice. These medals are yet another chance to show the world where we stand in the fight for freedom. Despite the immense pressure they faced, their determination was more powerful. Now, their historic win can be honored and celebrated for decades to come.” SaidCongressman Mike Quigley.

“The 1980 U.S. Men’s Hockey Team showed the world that hard work and determination can overcome even the greatest odds, and their triumph at Lake Placid inspired our nation,” said Congressman Bill Keating. “Their victory remains a timeless symbol of teamwork and unity in the face of adversity, and the Congressional Gold Medal will serve to both recognize their great achievement and inspire the next generation of hockey greats.”

“We applaud the introduction of the Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act and appreciate the work done by Representatives Stauber, Stefanik, Quigley and Keating,” said Pat Kelleher, executive director of USA Hockey. “The 1980 U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team is most deserving of receiving the Congressional Gold Medal. Their unlikely run to the gold medal in Lake Placid, which included a historic win over the Soviet Union, inspired our nation at what was a very trying time. We encourage fans to contact their congressional representatives in support of this bill and its passage.”

“The most special moments in sports actually transcend the playing surface. Truly rare are those that captivate an entire nation and still resound nearly half a century later. The 1980 U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team’s stunning victory over the Soviets in Lake Placid, N.Y., and its gold medal-clinching triumph over Finland two days later comprise perhaps the most memorable and impactful achievement in the history of athletics. We at the National Hockey League enthusiastically support the introduction of the Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act and look forward to its passage in Congress and eventual signing by the President.” Said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

Background – On February 22, 1980, the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team defeated the Soviet Union in Lake Placid, New York. This game is now known as the “Miricle on Ice.” The United States team was comprised of amateur college athletes, while the Soviet Union’s team was comprised of some of the best players to ever play the game. Prior to this game, the Soviet Union had not lost an Olympic game since 1968. The United States had only one returning Olympic athlete.

Eight years after this game, Congressman Stauber and the Lake Superior State University Division 1 hockey team won the National Championship at the same rink in Lake Placid, New York.

Congressman Stauber and Congressman Quigley are co-chairs of the Congressional Hockey Caucus.

    MIL OSI Global Banks –

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Swaminathan J: Central banks and financial stability

    Source: Bank for International Settlements

Distinguished panellists – Prof. Randall S. Kroszner, Professor, University of Chicago and Former Governor, Federal Reserve Board; Ms. Emmanuelle Assouan, Director General, Financial Stability and Operations, Banque de France; Ms. Sarah Breeden, Deputy Governor for Financial Stability, Bank of England; Dr. Sajjid Chinoy, Managing Director and Chief Economist India, JP Morgan; esteemed delegates and colleagues from the Reserve Bank. A very good afternoon to all of you.

It is an honour to open this discussion on this very important and pertinent topic in today’s financial world – “Central Banks and Financial Stability: Assessing Risks and Building Resilience.”

The financial sector is the backbone of the economy, enabling efficient allocation of resources, managing risks through various instruments, and ensuring smooth payments and settlements. It performs crucial functions that support investments and drives economic growth. Therefore, the financial sector becomes the cornerstone of a well-functioning economy.

The financial sector is vulnerable to risks-especially systemic ones that, which if left unchecked, can have far-reaching consequences. As you are aware these systemic risks manifest across two dimensions: time and interconnectedness. On the one hand, financial risks can build up over time, especially in periods of economic euphoria. On the other, the growing interconnections between financial institutions, markets, and the broader economy make the system more open to shocks.

In today’s world, challenges are more complex and unpredictable than ever. Traditional risks, like credit and liquidity risks, now have new and faster drivers. For example, bank runs that once unfolded over days, giving regulators time to respond, can now occur within hours due to the speed of internet and mobile banking. The increasing reliance on technology also introduces vulnerabilities, such as dependence on third-party service providers and heightened cybersecurity threats, all while customers expect uninterrupted services. Additionally, we face emerging risks, such as climate risk.

In this increasingly volatile environment, building resilience is crucial to maintaining financial stability. However, resilience is a balancing act-too much emphasis on safeguarding can stifle innovation and growth, while too little can expose the system to significant vulnerabilities. Finding that right balance so that we can have a robust financial system that can weather crises without constraining economic progress is one of the key challenges that we face today.

Indeed, central banks are much like wicketkeepers in cricket or goalkeepers in football-often unnoticed in success but always in the spotlight during failure. When everything works seamlessly, their efforts remain behind the scenes, often taken for granted. However, when a crisis occurs, they are asked as to how they could allow the ball to slip through their fingers! In addition, Central Bankers are also tasked with preventing further damage and restoring stability quickly.

Let me offer an analogy: imagine a person teetering on the edge of a cliff, seemingly about to fall, only to be pulled back just in time by a watchful observer. When central banks intervene in such a manner to prevent a potential crisis, those they protect may claim they didn’t need saving at all. This highlights a common paradox-while regulators work tirelessly to maintain stability and avert disasters, their successes often go unnoticed, and their actions are sometimes viewed as unnecessary, intrusive or excessive by those unaware of the risks. Yet it is precisely this proactive oversight that ensures the safety and soundness of the financial system, allowing it to function smoothly even in times of uncertainty.

Over the years, the role of central banks has significantly evolved. Initially seen as the lender of last resort, today, central banks are equipped with a broad range of tools-regulatory, supervisory, and monetary-to ensure the stability of the financial system. In some countries, central banks do not have supervisory roles, with the supervision being carried out by a separate agency, but a coordinated approach is essential. Governments, central banks, financial regulators, and the industry must all work together to ensure appropriate and timely action is taken to safeguard financial stability.

In India, the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC), chaired by the Union Finance Minister, along with its sub-committee led by the Governor of the Reserve Bank, has been effectively facilitating discussions and enhanced understanding of risks across the financial sector. Biannually, Reserve Bank publishes Financial Stability Reports that deliver a thorough risk assessment of India’s financial landscape. These reports utilise macro stress tests, sensitivity analyses, network and contagion assessments, and systemic risk surveys to provide valuable insights into potential vulnerabilities that affect the financial sector. Apart from inter-regulatory coordination, RBI also actively engages with the industry through regular engagements/ interactions including conferences with the Boards of supervised entities, periodic meetings with the MDs & CEOs, Heads of Assurance functions as well as interactions with auditors.

Having discussed the importance of domestic coordination, I would also like to emphasise the significance of global supervisory cooperation. Historically, crises have acted as catalysts for bringing supervisors together to address shared challenges. For instance, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision was formed in the aftermath of the Herstatt Bank failure, highlighting the necessity for a coordinated response to systemic risks. However, we should not wait for crises to play out before strengthening international collaboration. Greater engagement for proactive horizon scanning of potential risks and vulnerabilities, along with discussions on strategies to mitigate and address these challenges, can enhance our collective resilience and crisis preparedness.

Indeed, as a part of our agenda for the next decade, RBI@100, the Reserve Bank intends to engage more with the central banks of the global south. The Reserve Bank also aims to establish a global model of risk-focused supervision by fostering a strong risk discovery and compliance culture, building a “through-the-cycle” risk assessment framework. Reserve Bank is working to create a comprehensive data analytics ecosystem to support its supervisory functions.

With these thoughts in mind, I look forward to a rich and insightful panel discussion on how central banks can continue to enhance financial stability and build a resilient global financial system. Thank you!

Today, we’re over $135 million. Those are great numbers, but it’s far more important to understand what they mean: Pennsylvanians with disabilities are saving with PA ABLE because it works. I will keep fighting to make PA ABLE even stronger because everyone deserves financial independence and security. ABLE has deep, bipartisan roots in Pennsylvania, and I’m proud to promote it everywhere I go.”

  • MIL-OSI Global: Trump’s musical interlude is a twist on the long tradition of candidates enlisting musicians’ support, from Al Jolson to Springsteen to Swift

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Matt Harris, Associate Professor of Political Science, Park University

Donald Trump made liberal use of music in what’s being called a “surreal” or “bizarre” town hall meeting on Oct. 14, 2024, in Oaks, Pennsylvania. After two attendees at the event had medical problems, Trump declared he would stop answering audience questions, and music would be played instead.

Then, as the Washington Post reported, “For 39 minutes, Trump swayed, bopped — sometimes stopping to speak — as he turned the event into almost a living-room listening session of his favorite songs from his self-curated rally playlist.”

The music included “YMCA” by the Village People and Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

The use of music in campaigns is a long tradition, although this may be the first time a playlist has substituted for talking points. While Trump is bopping at campaign events, both Democrats and Republicans anticipate what looks to be another coin flip election that could come down to a few hundred thousand votes in a handful of states. Every voter matters – no matter how you reach them. With that in mind, Democrats are communicating not just on matters of policy, but matters of pop culture.

Specifically, Democrats are embracing football and Taylor Swift. The Harris-Walz campaign trotted out endorsements from 15 Pro Football Hall of Famers and sells Swiftie-style friendship bracelets on its campaign website, among other overtures. Swift herself has endorsed Kamala Harris.

The Harris-Walz campaign is definitely stressing Walz’s football coach background.

Tim Walz cited his experience as a football coach and mentioned Swift in the vice presidential debate.

Democratic challenger and former NFLer Colin Allred, who is running to unseat GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, has put out ads in which he appears moments from taking to the gridiron.

But how much does pop culture campaigning, if you will, matter? Does trying to link a campaign to a sport, or a culture, or a style of music actually influence elections? Looking to five different election campaigns in the past can give a sense of the effects, or lack thereof, of such campaigning.

An ad for Texas Democrat Rep. Colin Allred, a former NFL player, stresses his football past in his bid to unseat GOP Sen. Ted Cruz.

    Reagan and Springsteen

Any discussion of the embrace of pop culture by candidates should probably start with Ronald Reagan’s Bruce Springsteen era.

Reagan, attempting to reach beyond his base, viewed 1984 as a vibes-based election and cited Springsteen as an exemplar of the hope his campaign wished to inspire. Springsteen rejected a request from Reagan’s camp to use his often-misunderstood “Born in the U.S.A.” on the campaign trail. The song’s lyrics describe a down-on-his-luck Vietnam War veteran, but if you don’t listen carefully to the lyrics, the song can sound like a celebration of veterans and being American.

While Reagan went on to win 49 states in that year’s election, perhaps the biggest long-term impact of his courtship of Springsteen fans was to turn Springsteen from a relatively apolitical performer to a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party.

In this way, Springsteen’s transformation mirrors that of Taylor Swift, with Marsha Blackburn, the Tennessee Republican senator, serving as her Reagan – the person who pushed the performer into the political arena after years on the sidelines.

    Springsteen and Kerry

Springsteen’s foray into politics eventually led him to back Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in 2004 with a series of concerts called the “Vote for Change” tour.

Kerry, meanwhile, undertook his own efforts at cultural turf claiming. His attempts to demonstrate his bona fides as a sports-loving everyman went awry at times, when he flubbed the name of “Lambeau Field,” home of Wisconsin’s Green Bay Packers, and referred to a nonexistent Boston Red Sox player, “Manny Ortez.” The ill-fated sports references arguably didn’t hurt his campaign – he won Wisconsin and Massachusetts – but he was ridiculed for a photo-op hunting trip late in the campaign and went on to lose rural Midwestern voters decisively – as well as the election.

Kerry’s dabbling with hunting imagery was perhaps an attempt to dull President George W. Bush’s advantage in perceived strength of leadership, which was in part burnished by his adoption of a cowboy persona.

    Harding, Jolson and the Cubs

While Reagan’s attempt to woo 1980s rock fans is one of the best-known attempts to campaign on a mantra of popular culture, it was far from the first.

Sen. Warren Harding’s 1920 front porch campaign for president was given a jolt of enthusiasm by a visit from singer and actor Al Jolson. Harding was also visited in his hometown, Marion, Ohio, by other actors and celebrities and the Chicago Cubs.

Harding’s strategy probably better serves as a template for things to come than a decisive move in the 1920 election: His victory with over 60% of the popular vote suggests no celebrity could have saved Democrat James Cox.

    Bill Clinton and MTV

As the Harris-Walz campaign tries to draw votes from Swift’s young fans, parallels can be drawn to Democratic Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton’s attempts to embrace youth culture in the 1992 presidential election. Among other appearances, Clinton took questions from young voters on MTV and played saxophone on “The Arsenio Hall Show.”

While the direct effect of Clinton’s forays into youth culture is difficult to measure, he did surge among young voters relative to Democrat Michael Dukakis’ 1988 presidential campaign.

In his 1992 campaign, Bill Clinton went on MTV to answer young people’s questions, which included ‘If you had it to do over again, would you inhale?’

    Ford and football

Any discussion of politicians embracing football culture would be incomplete without a discussion of the American president best at playing football, Gerald Ford, the vice president who became the nation’s 38th president in 1974, when Richard Nixon resigned during the Watergate scandal.

Ford played center on two national championship teams at the University of Michigan. While not using his football player background to the same level as former football coach Walz did at the Democratic National Convention, Ford did make use of his football credentials on the stump during the 1976 presidential campaign and was joined on the campaign trail by Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.

But the votes of football fans were apparently not enough to keep Ford in the White House for long. He lost the 1976 election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.

    Potentially fruitful pickups

Will the Harris-Walz strategy of recruiting voters through pop culture be successful? Swift’s fans are largely young, suburban women, and NFL fans are strewn across the political spectrum. There are potentially fruitful pickups in both camps. The candidates certainly think it matters: Walz said he “took football back” from Republicans, a claim disputed by Trump.

Stressing pop culture credentials can also provide attention to a campaign, regardless of persuasion. Clinton’s pop culture appearances generated coverage beyond the appearances themselves and were cost-effective for a campaign short on funds.

This type of pop culture campaigning generates coverage, then, even if voters aren’t moved by thinking a candidate shares their love of football or pop music.

This story has been updated to include the Trump town hall in Oaks, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 14.

Matt Harris does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organization that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Sunderland schoolchildren give rugby a try

    Source: City of Sunderland

Schoolchildren have been tackling some new skills as the city gets ready to host the opening match of the Women’s Rugby World Cup in August 2025.

A total of 240 participants from 20 primary schools and 10 secondary schools across the city took part in a special rugby skills event at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre on Tuesday 15 October.

The children all took part in skill-based games and activities focusing on skills like agility and throwing and catching, as Active Sunderland is working to encourage more schools, clubs and communities to take up the sport ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup coming to the city next year.

Sunderland City Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism, Councillor Beth Jones, said: “I’m delighted to see so many children getting active and learning physical skills as well as valuable communication and teamwork. As the city is getting ready to host England’s Red Roses for the opening match of the Women’s Rugby World Cup at the Stadium of Light, it’s wonderful to see so many young people taking an interest in the sport.

“I hope that more people will be inspired to give it a go as we look forward to the tournament, and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. The city council is working alongside community rugby clubs to offer something for everyone, from girls’ rugby to walking rugby and a variety of fitness sessions, so there’s never been a better time to give rugby a try.”

The Active Sunderland Rugby Skills Event was supported by The Newcastle Falcons, who brought touch rugby activities for the schoolchildren to try. The focus of the day was learning new skills and taking part in physical activity, but children who demonstrated skills like teamwork and leadership received awards for their efforts.

A legacy programme taking place around the World Cup is designed to get more people playing rugby and encourage more women and girls to take up the sport. Active Sunderland is creating new opportunities for communities to take part in recreational rugby activities and recently five sets of junior rugby posts have popped up located at Commercial Road, Barnes Park, Success Road, Princess Anne Park and Shipwrights Playing Fields with exciting programmes to be announced.

The draw for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 will take place on Thursday, 17 October, with the match schedule set to be released on Tuesday 22 October.

The draw will be broadcast live on BBC’s The One Show, one of the UK’s most-watched primetime programmes, airing from 19:00 (GMT +1). This marks a key milestone for the tournament, set to be the largest sporting event in England in 2025.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Trying to lose weight? Here’s why your genetics could be just as important as your exercise regime

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Henry Chung, Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science, University of Essex

The more genes associated with weight loss a participant had, the more they responded to exercise. Chalermpon Poungpeth/ Shutterstock

Weight loss is a complicated process. There are so many factors involved including your diet, how much sleep you get each night and the kind of exercise you do. Our recent study shows that your specific genetic profile may also have a dominant effect on how well you lose weight through exercise. This might explain why two people who do an identical workout will see very different results.

We identified 14 genes that appeared to significantly contribute to how much weight a person lost through running. This suggests that some of us have a natural talent when it comes to burning fat and losing weight through exercise.

To conduct our study, we recruited 38 men and women born in the UK aged between 20 and 40. None of the participants regularly exercised at the start of the study. The group was randomly divided, with one half following a strict eight-week endurance programme that consisted of three weekly runs of 20-30 minutes.

The other group acted as a control. They were instructed to refrain from exercise and continue their daily routines as normal over this study period, including diet and lifestyle habits.

All participants conducted a running test to see how far they could run in 12 minutes, and were weighed before and after the study period. This was to gauge their initial fitness level and see how much they changed over the duration of the study. Body mass index (BMI) was also calculated.

Additionally, a saliva sample was collected from each person with a DNA test kit at the end of the study to assess their unique genetic profile.

It’s important to note that everyone who participated in the study had a similar body weight, BMI and aerobic fitness level at the start of the study. This is beneficial for multiple reasons. It meant everyone was at the same starting point, and some confounding variables were already controlled for such as fitness level. This ultimately improves accuracy in interpreting the results.

    Exercise genes

Everyone in the exercise group managed to lose weight – around 2kg on average. The control group, on the other hand, put on a little bit of weight.

While a 2kg weight loss may not sound like a lot, it’s significant considering the exercise regime only lasted eight weeks and participants made no changes to their diet.

More significant, however, was the large variation in results among those that exercised – with an up to 10kg difference in weight loss between some of the participants. In fact, everyone within the exercise group improved at different rates.

Since we controlled for factors such as the intensity, duration and frequency of the exercises and used participants who’d had a similar body weight and fitness level at the start of the study, this suggests that some people naturally benefited more than others from endurance training.

When we looked at the genetic profiles of our participants, we found that differences in each person’s response to the exercise was strongly associated with their specific genetics.

We showed there was a strong linear correlation between the amount of weight participants lost and 14 genes that have previously been shown to be associated with body weight, metabolism or psychological conditions that affect BMI. The greater number of these genes a participant had, the more weight they lost. Our results also revealed that around 63% of the variance in weight lost among participants were explained by the genes identified.

For example, research has shown the PPARGC1A gene plays a role in metabolism and the use of fats for energy while exercising. Our study found that all participants who lost more than 1.5kg from exercise had this gene. Those who lost less than this did not have this gene.

Genes are only one part of the equation, however.
    EvMedvedeva/ Shutterstock

Our findings align with what previous studies have shown. But while previous papers have only looked at the link between individual genes and weight loss, ours is the first to show that 14 different genes appear to work in combination to affect whether a person loses weight from endurance exercise.

    Piece of the puzzle

Our study also suggests that while some people possess genes that make it easier for them to get fit and lose weight, people with these favourable genetics can only flourish if they actually exercise. In fact, our control group also had a number of these listed genes, but without exercise these genes could not activate, and so the participants did not lose any weight.

While our study provides compelling findings, it’s not without limitations. Since we only looked at endurance-based exercise, it will be important for future studies to investigate whether there are similar links between weight loss, genetics and combinations of different types of training (such as a mixture of endurance and strength sessions into a training plan).

It’s also worth mentioning that exercise is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to weight loss. So even if you have all 14 of these genes, you won’t lose any weight or get fit if you don’t exercise and maintain a healthy diet and sleep pattern.

On the flip side, someone that only has a few of these favourable genes can still benefit if they exercise and are mindful of other aspects of their lifestyle.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Everything Liz Saville Roberts said in her speech to annual conference

    Source: Party of Wales

Our Westminster parliamentary leader, Liz Saville Roberts, gave the closing speech to the annual conference.

    Diolch yn fawr, Gynhadledd.

Mae’n bleser siarad efo chi ar derfyn deuddydd gwych o sgwrsio, o drafod syniadau, a chwrdd â ffrindiau hen a newydd.

Dwi’n falch o’r cysylltiadau sydd ganddon ni fel plaid. Ro’n i’n falch o glywed Stephen Gethins ddoe o’r SNP – wrth gwrs mae hir draddodiad ganddon ni o gael rhywun o’n chwaer blaid yr SNP i’n cynhadledd.

Ro’n i’n falch iawn o glywed John Finucane o Sinn Fein. Mae’n gysylltiad gweddol newydd rydyn ni’n ei gryfhau wrth ei gael yma yn siarad heddiw.

A dwi’n meddwl ‘mod i’n siarad dros bawb pan dwi’n dweud bod yr anerchiad gan Lysgennad Palesteina, Husam Zomlot, yn un o’r pethau mwyaf grymus dwi erioed wedi ei glywed mewn cynhadledd Plaid Cymru.

A dwi’n falch hefyd o’ch annerch heddiw fel arweinydd y Grŵp cryfaf sydd gan Plaid Cymru erioed wedi bod yn San Steffan.

Dani wedi cael cyfnod prysur a dweud y lleia.

Er bod nifer ohonom wedi bod yn hir aros yr etholiad, roedd amseriad yr Etholiad Cyffredinol yn syndod i bron bob un ohonom – gan gynnwys Rishi Sunak yn hynny o beth!

Ond, fe wnaethom ateb yr alwad fel plaid.

Dwi’n hynod falch bod Plaid Cymru wedi sicrhau’r gyfran uchaf o’r bleidlais mewn Etholiad San Steffan yn hanes ein plaid!

Mae’n rhaid i mi ddiolch i’r gwirfoddolwyr ar draws Cymru gyfan a’n helpodd i gnocio ar ddrysau a gyrru’r ymgyrch i lwyddiant.

Rhaid i mi roi diolch arbennig i griw Dwyfor Meirionnydd, ac yn arbennig, arbennig, i fy asiant Arwyn Herald gyda’r gwaith arwrol, amyneddgar, lliwgar, ieithgar weithiau! A’r holl luniau yn ystod yr ymgyrch yn yr etholaeth newydd sbon – sydd gyda llaw yn fwy na Luxembourg!

Ar y nodyn cychwynol yma hefyd – yn drist iawn, mi gollon ni un o’n cefnogwyr mwyaf brwd yn ddiweddar. Roedd Dewi Pws yn arwr cenedlaethol, ond i mi hefyd yn gymydog, yn ffrind ac yn ymgyrchydd brwd. Yr hyn roedd Dewi yn ei wneud yn unigryw oedd gyrru yr achos cenedlaethol, nid ag och a gwae ond â gwên ar ei wyneb.

Daeth Dewi a Rhiannon lond trol o hapusrwydd i Nefyn.

Roedd o’n genedlaethwr i’r carn, ac yn enghraifft i ni gyd.

    Diolch am bopeth, Dewi Pws.

Roedden ni’n gwybod ein bod ni’n wynebu cyd-destun anodd wrth fynd i mewn i’r etholiad cyffredinol.

Ond gyda’ch gwaith caled chi a’ch ymroddiad chi, mae gennym dîm cryf a phenderfynol newydd yn San Steffan.

A dwi eisiau troi atyn nhw fesul un rwan.

Mae’r ymryddawn Ben Lake wedi’i ddychwelyd gyda chyfran uwch o’r bleidlais – supermajority bron – yng Ngheredigion Preseli newydd.

Arweiniodd Ann Davies ymgyrch gampus yng Nghaerfyrddin a phwy all anghofio’r ddelwedd eiconig o Ann yn cael ei chanu oddi ar y platfform i gyfeiliant Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau ar ei thrên cyntaf i Lundain?

Mae etholiad Llinos Medi yn Ynys Môn yn profi bod pobl yn ysu am wleidyddion sy’n cael eu gyrru gan angerdd dros eu cymunedau ac ysfa i wella bywydau pobl.

Y gair i ddisgrifio Llinos? Ysbrydoledig. Mae Ynys Môn yn mor lwcus o dy gael di.

Nid yn unig enillon ni ein seddi targed ond cawsom ganlyniadau gwych ar hyd a lled Cymru – Caerdydd, Llanelli, Bangor Aberconwy. Diolch yn fawr i ymgeiswyr ar draws Gymru am ymgyrch ragorol.

Rhan allweddol o’n llwyddiant yn yr etholiad oedd perfformiad ein harweinydd Rhun ap Iorwerth. Roedd o’n bwerdy yn y cyfryngau. Oherwydd Rhun, roedd llais Cymru i’w glywed yn yr etholiad. Mae o wedi codi proffil Plaid Cymru. Felly diolch yn fawr iti, Rhun.

We have every reason therefore to be hopeful for the future.

Another reason to be hopeful is that we played our part in kicking out the Tories out of Wales.

They may still be the second largest party in Westminster, but they are a spent force in Wales.

    Let us be clear:

Plaid is the official opposition for Wales in Westminster. Not the Conservatives.

We will do what the opposition are supposed to do – hold the Government of the day to account.

As I speak with you today, it is UK Labour’s 100th day in office – and what have we seen so far?

They have maintained the cruel two child benefit cap.

Cut winter fuel payments for over half a million pensioners in Wales, just as energy prices have increased by 10%.

Overseen the end of steelmaking in Wales despite claiming they had a plan to save it.

Continued to give Israel a carte blanche for its actions in the Middle East in defiance of international law.

From ‘Change’ to 100 days of continuity.

We were promised the sunlit uplands of a UK Labour Government supposedly working in partnership with the Labour Government in Cardiff.

The reality is much different, with Wales continuing to have a child-parent, supplicant-master, relationship with Westminster, with Labour in Wales following orders.

Sue Gray has recently been appointed an ‘envoy for the nations and regions’ – a backwards term for an outdated way of governing.

But she didn’t even bother to turn up to her first meeting in Edinburgh.

Non-job. Non-starter. Labour have no understanding of Wales.

Let me give you two examples.

This month marks 5 years since the Thomas Commission report recommended the full-scale devolution of justice and policing to Wales.

This isn’t a nice to have – this is fundamental if we want to make a fairer and healthier society.

Due to the crisis in our prisons, prisoners are being released early, and yet some are re-offending to avoid being homeless.

With a devolved system we could divert people away from prison ending Wales’ status as having the highest imprisonment rate in Western Europe.

It would also be a way of ensuring that those who are released are fully supported by housing and health services – reducing the reoffending rate in the process.

Yet UK Labour is not interested in allowing Wales to do this, despite a fully devolved justice system being the policy of the Welsh Labour Government.

Labour in Wales also nominally want the Crown Estate devolved, yet Eluned Morgan isn’t even asking her boss Keir Starmer for these powers.

It is left to Plaid Cymru to lead where Labour fail.

We are campaigning to ensure that it is the people of Wales who benefit from the use of Welsh natural resources – not the Monarchy.

The millions of pounds that could be generated from a devolved Crown Estate could be transformative for our communities.

Profit from the Scottish Crown Estate is directly transferred to Scottish councils to support community benefit projects.

Last year £11.2 million was transferred to councils, with those in deprived areas such as the Highlands prioritised for funding.

Conference. Let’s say it clearly: if Scotland can, so – can – Wales.

UK Labour have brushed aside the idea of devolving the Crown Estate instead promising that GB Energy will solve Wales’ energy needs.

But where is the evidence of HOW it will reduce bills?

We can do so much better than this.

Plaid Cymru’s plan for cheaper energy bills starts right here, in our communities. We would expand community energy projects – where the power generated locally is used locally, and it’s sold to our people at affordable prices.

Just yesterday, Llinos Medi MP on this stage called for regional pricing – a bold idea that energy prices should reflect where it’s produced.

Wales is an energy powerhouse, yet we’re paying the most!

We in the north pay the highest standing charges in all of Britain.

It’s outrageous. Plaid Cymru will scrap these unjust standing charges once and for all.

Imagine the difference that would make in an energy-rich nation like ours.

For our low-income families, we would also introduce a social tariff to protect them from skyrocketing prices. And we would fund it by making sure those with vast, unearned wealth finally pay their fair share.

This is more than just lowering bills – this is about fairness, about justice, and about Wales taking charge of our future.

No more empty promises – it’s time our communities see the REAL benefits of the energy we produce.

Labour is tired and letting us down.

They are continuing the failed status quo which people in Wales know isn’t working.

Wales needs a fresh start, and Plaid Cymru are the Government in waiting ready to provide the bold change and vision our nation needs.

In rural areas where young people are often forced to leave their communities to look for opportunities further afield.

Plaid Cymru have already acted to address the problem of second homes but must do more to increase access to housing and jobs.

Wales could draw on international examples where other countries are already acting such as in Western Australia where they run successful promotional campaign to draw workers to fill roles in public services, and regions of Spain which use their tax systems to incentivise people to stay in their communities.

These are examples of creative ideas that Wales could emulate with the right powers and the right ambition.

If we look at industrial areas, we see the managed decline of historic industries such as steel in Port Talbot.

Whilst this is a complete economic misstep, there is an opportunity through the development of floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea for places like Port Talbot to thrive once again if we maximise the benefit by ensuring local supply chains are used.

If we look at our valleys, there is a strong community spirit that is untapped.  We want to change that with an economic vision centred on community wealth building.

Plaid Cymru is offering the bold ambitious vision for the whole of Wales – we are ready to be the change that Wales needs.

As we look to the future, there are many challenges, but I am increasingly hopeful for the future of Wales.

Plaid Cymru is offering the bold ambitious vision for the whole of Wales – we are ready to be the change that Wales needs.

We will take this positive message forward into 2026.

Conference lets go forward together, let’s bring about the change we want to see and bring the people of Wales on the journey with us.

    Ymlaen!

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Dmitry Chernyshenko: The “For Loyalty to Science” Award Helps Raise the Prestige of the Scientist Profession

MILES AXLE Translation. Region: Russian Federation –

Source: Government of the Russian Federation – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

    Award for Fidelity to Science

The Expert Council determinedshortlist of the 10th All-Russian Prize “For Loyalty to Science”.

The names of the winners will be announced at a ceremony on October 28. The organizer of the annual event is the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.

“In the Decade of Science and Technology, announced by President Vladimir Putin, the popularization of research and development is of particular importance. The “For Loyalty to Science” award helps to encourage journalists, bloggers, and popularizers, who, among other things, help to raise the prestige of the scientific profession and attract new personnel to the field for the technological leadership of our country. This year, more than 1.8 thousand applications from 80 regions of Russia were submitted for the award – almost 1.5 times more than last year. The most popular nomination was “Science for Children”. It was held for the first time and accepted applications from projects for the youngest. The emergence of such nominations and topics is an important trend, since the development of the country and our common future depend on what the younger generation will be interested in, what knowledge and skills they will develop,” emphasized Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

The winners of the award will receive a cash reward and special prizes from the competition partners: a trip on a nuclear icebreaker, a trip to one of the Russian cosmodromes, an excursion to one of the high-tech facilities of PJSC Gazprom, a tour of an aircraft manufacturing plant with the opportunity to test their strength on the MC-21 pilot training complex.

“In the last few years, our award has been breaking records in terms of the number of applications submitted. This year, the most popular nominations were: “Science for Children”, “Author of Digital Content”, “Recognition”, “Scientific Press Service of the Year”, “Work with Experience: Protecting Historical Truth”, “Russian Science for the World”. Such a wide range of applicants’ interests speaks of the great attention paid to the activities of scientists and researchers in completely different industries and spheres. Thanks to your work, dear participants, the number of people interested in Russian science is growing, especially among the younger generation, and this is especially valuable,” said Minister of Education and Science Valery Falkov.

The applications received were evaluated by journalists who widely cover scientific topics, scientists, representatives of government authorities, private foundations, companies, non-profit organizations, press services of universities, and research institutes. The laureates and diploma winners will be determined by the prize organizing committee.

The event’s partners are the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center, and Lomonosov Moscow State University. For more than five years in a row, the award has been supported by the Art, Science, and Sport Charity Foundation. The award is held as part of the Decade of Science and Technology announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The founders of special prizes are traditionally the state corporations Roscosmos, Rostec, and Rosatom. Since 2024, PJSC Gazprom and PJSC VTB Bank have become the new partners of the award.

The Ohio State University (OSU) teamed up with NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland for a multi-faceted tribute to NASA on Sept 21. During a home football game against Marshall University, OSU’s Marching Band recognized the agency with a NASA-themed halftime show, in-game salute, and tribute to Glenn and two alums who play significant roles in NASA’s spaceflight operations.

Public Address Announcer Wes Clark talked with Center Director Dr. Jimmy Kenyon, who shared information about Glenn and thanked OSU for the honor. During a special spotlight, Kenyon and OSU alums who now work at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center – Jeff Radigan, a NASA flight director, and Molly Radigan, deputy chief of Space Flight Systems – came onto the field to be recognized.

At halftime, a special astronaut video from the International Space Station introduced the NASA-themed show. The band then blasted off with its space-themed performance that included several songs — from “Fly Me to the Moon” to “Starman.” The talented band members marched in formations that included an astronaut and spaceship blasting off, garnering excitement for NASA and cheers from the audience.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: National Basketball Association (NBA) App Launches New Digital Features Highlighted by Multiview Ahead of the 2024-25 Season

Source: Africa Press Organisation – English (2) – Report:

NEW YORK, United States of America, October 15, 2024/APO Group/ —

    • Fans in Africa Can Watch up to Four Games Simultaneously Across Connected Devices on NBA (www.NBA.com) League Pass via Multiview –
    • “Pass the Rock” Returns for Season Three with a Special “Rookie Year Edition” Chronicling 2023-24 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama’s First Season –

The NBA today announced the launch of new features available to fans globally on the NBA App – the official home of basketball – for the 2024-25 season, showcasing the league’s dedication to innovation to enhance the fan viewing experience. The new elements are highlighted by multiview now available on connected devices, which gives fans the option to watch up to four games simultaneously on NBA League Pass – the league’s live game subscription service.

In addition, NBA League Pass subscribers in Africa and around the world will have the ability to customize their viewing experience and always be live when watching NBA games. Fans can smart rewind games from any point with key plays highlighted, download full games for offline viewing and access a range of game recap versions including “All Possessions,” “10-Minute Condensed,” “Key Highlights,” and more. Additionally, the app will offer interactive synced stats and analytics, ensuring fans experience the game in the app as if it is live no matter when they are watching.

Among the game-changing enhancements is “NBA Insights,” an AI-powered tool that leverages the power of Microsoft Azure. The feature uses AI rooted in deep basketball understanding to identify key narratives, player performances, and notable milestones, providing fans with a continuous feed of text-based updates that go beyond the box score to better contextualize what’s happening on the court. The league is also using Generative AI to localize content, offering game recaps in French, Portuguese and Spanish as well as translations for select original programming and live games.

Additionally, content on the NBA App throughout the season will incorporate “Dunk Score,” an AI-calculated grade for in-game dunks in real-time based on a breadth of factors including the player’s jumping distance, style and force at the rim, and defensive efforts from the opposing team.

“Pass the Rock,” the popular NBA App series highlighting the emerging league stars, returns for season three with a special “Rookie Year Edition.” This episode will follow San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama’s transition to the NBA, culminating in him being named the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year. On Sunday, Oct. 20, the NBA will launch “Raising 18,” a nine-part docuseries narrated by five-time NBA All-Star Al Horford spotlighting the Boston Celtics’ journey to their 2024 NBA Finals victory.

Popular experiential features within the NBA App have been enhanced to increase personalization, including the all-new ‘Following’ tab, which combines the latest content from your favorite teams and players into an algorithmic feed as well as the revamped “Game Stories” now with pre-game analysis, highlights and interactive polls. “Moments” – the popular vertical social media-style feed feature – has been upgraded to include multi-language support and can now be accessed on Roku TVs for quick content consumption on larger screens.

On NBA League Pass, fans will have access to a variety of alternate telecast options, including in-language streams (Spanish, Portuguese and Korean), the return of the popular “NBA Strategy Stream” providing fans with a unique viewing option breaking down in-game tactics and “NBA HooperVision” featuring NBA legend Quentin Richardson and special guests. Additional alternate stream options will be announced throughout the season.

As part of the league’s partnership with Meta, 52 live game broadcasts will be streamed in immersive VR in NBA Arena in Meta Horizon Worlds and Xtadium on Meta Quest, the Official MR Headset of the NBA, NBA G League and WNBA.  Xtadium will also allow NBA League Pass subscribers to watch every live 2D game nightly in mixed reality, complete with real-time stats.  More information, including the full 2024-25 NBA game schedule for Meta Quest, can be found here (https://apo-opa.co/3YaWS7w).

The league continues to expand the technological capabilities of its “Next Gen integrated digital platform,” which is now powering four team-specific direct-to-consumer streaming services in the NBA App, including BlazerVision (https://apo-opa.co/3Ypldb1) (Portland Trail Blazers), ClipperVision (https://apo-opa.co/3Ypldb1) (LA Clippers), Jazz+ (https://apo-opa.co/3A1d7fq) (Utah Jazz) and Suns Live (https://apo-opa.co/3Ypldb1) (Phoenix Suns). • MIL-OSI Australia: Inglewood celebrates momentous 160th anniversary

    Source: Victoria Country Fire Authority

Joe Watts and CFA board member Beth Davidson OAM reveal the Inglewood tanker’s new name

Inglewood Fire Brigade marked a significant milestone over the weekend, celebrating its 160th anniversary with a special dinner to honour its long-serving members.

The event, held at Inglewood Golf Club, featured the naming of the brigade’s two trucks. They were dedicated to Joe Watts, who served for 55 years, and former Captain Brian Rodwell.

Inglewood Fire Brigade Captain Andrew Smith said the event was a fitting tribute to all past and present members who have served the community since 1864.

“It’s hard to put into words what the 160th anniversary means to the town, and the celebrations certainly lived up to expectations,” Andrew said.

“Recognising the contributions of Joe and Brian was a highlight for us all.”

A particularly poignant moment came when the family of former member David Dowler accepted his CFA life membership on his behalf.

David, who dedicated a combined 32 years of service to the Inglewood and Maldon fire brigades, sadly passed away shortly before the event.

“Dave was always first to the station when the pager went, and first to put up his hand for strike team duties,” Andrew said.

“He has been an integral part of the Inglewood brigade for several years and his sudden passing has affected the entire team.

“Dave’s guidance and sense of humour will be sadly missed.

“We were privileged to have members of Dave’s family attend our 160th celebration.”

Additional recognition included CFA life memberships for John Little (35 years) and David Patterson (30 years). Service awards, ranging from five-year certificates to 50-year medals, were also presented.

Andrew, who has been with the brigade for 18 years and served as captain for eight, expressed his pride in leading the brigade through such a significant occasion.

“It’s an honour to lead the brigade at such an important time in its history,” he said.

“Living in a small country town and being part of the CFA is about giving back to the community.”

Established in 1864, following a meeting of 150 locals at the Royal Hotel in Inglewood, the brigade operated from its Grant Street station for 154 years before moving to a new station on Southey Street in 2019.

“We’ve been fortunate to move into a brand new station, and we’ve recently added a new heavy tanker,” Andrew said.

“The old station, designed for horse-drawn vehicles, will always be part of our history, but the new facility is a huge boost.”

Inglewood itself was devastated by a fire in 1862, two years before the brigade was formed. The townspeople managed to stop the fire by tearing down buildings and ferrying water from a nearby dam. More recently, the brigade responded to a major shop fire on the town’s main street in late August this year.

With 30 members currently on the roster, Inglewood Fire Brigade is well positioned for its next 160 years, although Andrew said there is always room for more recruits.

“We’re always on the lookout for people willing to help protect their local community. If you’re interested, we’d love to hear from you.”

If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a CFA volunteers, you can find out more here.

  • MIL-OSI: Why Some Experts are Predicting Gold will Trade in Range of $2,800/oz to $3,200/oz in 2025

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

PALM BEACH, Fla., Oct. 15, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — FN Media Group News Commentary – Gold, often referred to as the “safe-haven asset,” has been a cornerstone of global finance for centuries. Its value has historically been influenced by a myriad of factors, including economic indicators, geopolitical events, and market sentiment. According to expert analysts in a report by Skilling.com, the gold price prediction for 2024 is expected to be positive, with prices potentially reaching $2,500 per ounce. This is driven by the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy, interest rates, and global demand for safe-haven assets. Some experts predict that gold will trade in the range of $2,800-$3,200 in 2025, reflecting expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut. The report said: “In the long term, the gold price prediction is influenced by factors such as inflation, central bank policies, and global economic trends. Analysts predict that the price of gold could reach $6,800 an ounce by 2040, estimating a rate of return of 7.2% per year. The increasing demand for gold as a safe-haven asset and the potential for a global recession are also driving factors behind the positive gold price prediction. Gold prices have been on a steady rise since 2023, with many analysts predicting a continued upward trend in 2024. According to J.P. Morgan Research, gold prices are expected to climb to $2,500/oz by the end of 2024, driven by factors such as U.S. fiscal deficit concerns, central bank reserve diversification into gold, inflationary hedging, and a fraying geopolitical landscape. This prediction is in line with other analysts’ predictions, with some predicting even higher prices, such as AG Thorson’s target of $3,000.” Active mining companies in the markets this week include RUA GOLD Inc. (OTCQB: NZAUF) (TSX-V: RUA), Newmont Corporation (NYSE: NEM) (TSX: NGT), OceanaGold Corporation (OTCQX: OCANF) (TSX: OGC), New Found Gold Corp. (NYSE: NFGC) (TSX-V: NFG), GoldMining Inc. (NYSE American: GLDG) (TSX: GOLD).

Skilling.com concluded: “The current market trends also suggest a bullish outlook for gold prices in 2024. The World Gold Council reported that central banks purchased 1,037 tonnes of gold in 2023, with 2024 starting strongly with net purchases of 290 tonnes in the first quarter. This increased demand from central banks, combined with the ongoing economic uncertainty, is likely to drive gold prices higher in 2024. However, it’s worth noting that there are also bearish risks to the gold price prediction, such as a scenario where the Fed turns more aggressive in ensuring inflation swiftly reaches its target. Nevertheless, many analysts believe that the structural drivers that have helped gold’s rally so far will remain a critical bullish driving force going forward, making it likely for gold prices to hit another all-time high in 2024.”

RUA GOLD’s (TSXV:RUA) (OTCQB:NZAUF) Drill Program Intersects Near Surface Gold at The Reefton Project – RUA GOLD Inc. (WKN: A4010V) (“RUA GOLD” or the “Company”) is pleased to provide an update from the drilling campaign underway at the Reefton Project on the South Island of New Zealand. The Company commenced its near mine drill program on the Murray Creek targets in July. A second drill rig was introduced in September to test the Capleston vein system. These historic mines collectively produced ~700koz of gold at 25.2g/t within a radius of ~20 kilometers.

Robert Eckford, CEO of RUA GOLD commented: “Our five years of meticulous surface exploration work over the Reefton project is paying dividends from the outset of this drill program. Both of the initial drill holes have confirmed we are in right area and are locating these lodes. The near surface intercepts on Capleston are encouraging and makes for compelling economic ounces, it supports our thesis that the surface veins are continuous past the old workings. Despite the initial drill hole at Murray Creek hitting old workings, it is extremely encouraging that we have identified the dip angle of the Victoria lode and we have even more confidence with the subsequent hole that is underway now, and results from this will be ready in the next few weeks.”

Capleston – On the second drill rig, which was introduced to test the Capleston vein system, the Company targeted an undeveloped and near-surface vein at the southern end of the two kilometer long historic Capleston project, the highest-grade producer of the Reefton Goldfield historically. Near surface targets lend themselves to early development and are the closest to transportation and infrastructure, providing low-cost operational advantages.

The first diamond drill hole, DD_REF_043, intersected a 12m zone of quartz-pyrite-arsenopyrite in the hanging wall, with a 1m quartz vein from 31m to 32m @ 3.86 g.t Au. A legacy drill hole intercepted the southern lode at 33m downhole, with 1m @ 24g/t Au followed by 1m @ 2.5g/t Au1. Mapping has recorded historical waste samples up to 32.0g/t Au in the vicinity, and a strong soil anomaly enveloping the vein (up to 410ppb Au).

Murray Creek – RUA GOLD reports the completion of the first hole testing the down-dip extension of the Victoria lode, DD_VIC_041, which is being evaluated by the team. This intersected the targeted reef at 344m down hole and encountered historical underground workings over a 4m length. It then exited out to the footwall before drilling on for an additional 20m.

This confirms that the lode extension is accurate and, with the precise location confirmed, a second hole is underway that is 50m deeper down dip from the initial drill hole. The Company anticipates an intersection into an un-mined portion of the reef at around 350m. Results from this testing will be available in the coming weeks. CONTINUED… Read this full press release and more news for RUA GOLD at: https://www.financialnewsmedia.com/news-rua/

New Found Gold Corp. (NYSE: NFGC) (TSX-V: NFG) recently announced the results of the first phase of channel samples from the Keats Trench and an update on the Iceberg Trench at the Queensway Project (“Queensway“), located on the Trans-Canada Highway 15km west of Gander, Newfoundland.

Greg Matheson, COO of New Found, stated: “Our approach at the Keats Trench has been to systematically test across the entire exposed surface to accurately map the extent of gold mineralization and determine with more certainty the distribution and variability of the gold contained within the mineralized domain. This is the highest density of assay data at Keats obtained to date and we are extremely pleased to see the broad widths of high-grade mineralization carrying across the exposure which is largely in line with modelled mineralization from the drilling program. The assay grade data from the trench is another key component to building our geologic understanding of the mineralization and structural controls at Keats. Given some of the elevated high-grade gold encountered, with many individual samples exceeding 100 g/t and some above 1,000 g/t, the team is now completing a second phase of channel sampling. This Phase II program will include a more targeted assessment of the high-grade components of Keats and cross veins that were not well tested in the first phase.”

GoldMining Inc. (NYSE American: GLDG) (TSX: GOLD) recently highlighted an updated Mineral Resource Estimate (“Whistler MRE”) that was announced by its publicly traded subsidiary, U.S. GoldMining Inc. (“U.S. GoldMining”) (NASDAQ: USGO) on October 7, 2024 for U.S. GoldMining’s Whistler Gold-Copper Project (the “Project”) located in Alaska, U.S.A.

Alastair Still, Chief Executive Officer of GoldMining, commented: “Since the initial public offering of U.S. GoldMining in April 2023, we are extremely pleased by the progress of its exploration initiatives at the Whistler Project, which have resulted in strengthened confidence of the Whistler MRE by increasing the gold equivalent ounces in the indicated category by approximately 117% from prior estimates. The Project now contains 6.5 Moz AuEq in the indicated resource category and an additional 4.2 Moz AuEq in the inferred resource category. The successful 2023 drilling program and growth of the mineral resources at Whistler is an example of how our spin-out strategy continues to unlock value for GoldMining shareholders. We now hold over $175 million in cash and equities1 that help position us to advance strategic initiatives across our portfolio, which globally holds 12.5 million AuEq ounces of measured and indicated resources and 9.7 million AuEq ounces of inferred resources.”

  • MIL-OSI: CarGurus Teams With NFL Legend Drew Brees for “Keys to Success” Campaign

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

Known for his confidence and ability to deliver under pressure, the former NFL quarterback and auto enthusiast is coaching today’s drivers in new digital campaign

BOSTON, Oct. 15, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — CarGurus (Nasdaq: CARG), the No. 1 visited digital auto platform for shopping, buying, and selling new and used vehicles1, today launched a new campaign with NFL legend Drew Brees focused on helping today’s drivers feel even more confident and prepared during the car buying and selling process. The “Keys to Success” campaign taps Brees—who is known for his ability to deliver under pressure both on and off the field—to empower all drivers in getting “game day-ready” to feel assured they’re getting the best deal and are in control through the car buying and selling process.

“CarGurus helps today’s shoppers get ready for their big moment by providing access to thorough vehicle information, the most extensive deal ratings, and the most new and used cars so you know you’re getting the best deal possible,” explained Brees. “So much of performing at a high level is about focusing on the process and having the tools that instill confidence so that by the time you step on the field—or into the dealership—you’re ready to make things happen.”

As one of the largest financial commitments today’s consumer can make, purchasing a car can be daunting for many. According to a recent CarGurus study2, many game-time decisions can erode a shopper’s confidence:

    • The top three factors that can cause someone to second-guess their car purchase are 1) Not being sure what makes for a fair price (39%); 2) Feeling rushed to make a decision (37%); and 3) The general stress of making such a big purchase/commitment (36%).
    • Nearly two-thirds (61%) of buyers said that negotiating a price is one of the most intimidating aspects of buying a car.
    • Mirroring the trend seen for car buying, 50% of respondents said the most intimidating aspect of selling or trading in a car was getting the most money.

“Known for his rigorous mental and physical preparation during his professional football career, Drew’s winning combination of steady confidence and rigorous research both on and off the field makes him the perfect confidence coach for today’s drivers, and a natural partner for CarGurus,” said Dafna Sarnoff, CarGurus Chief Marketing Officer. “Car shoppers can identify with Drew’s mindset of gathering the best information and tools available to feel confident that they are getting the best deals for their unique individual needs.”

The “Keys to Success” campaign will be featured on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and other digital video placements. See here to learn more about the campaign.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Why isometric exercises are so good for you

    Source: Anglia Ruskin University

    Published: 14 October 2024 at 12:00

VIEWPOINT: ARU experts explain why wall sits and planks can improve heart health

By Dan Gordon, Chloe French and Ruby Cain, Anglia Ruskin University

Exercise is great for improving heart health. But the thought of hitting the gym or going for a jog might put some people off from doing it. And, if you have a heart condition already, such dynamic exercises may not be safe to do.

The good news is, you don’t necessarily need to do a vigorous workout to see heart benefits. You can even improve your heart health by holding still and trying really hard not to move.

Isometric training, as this is called, is becoming increasingly popular as a way of reducing blood pressure and hypertension, and improving strength and muscle stability.

Normally, to build strength and force, our muscles need to change length throughout a movement. Squats and bicep curls are good examples of exercises that cause the muscle to change length throughout the movement.

But isometric training involves simply contracting your muscles, which generates force without needing to move your joints. The harder a muscle is contracted, the more forceful it becomes (and the more forceful a muscle is, the more powerfully we can perform a movement).

If you add weight to an isometric exercise, it causes the muscle to contract even harder. A wall sit and a plank are examples of isometric contractions.

Isometric exercises are associated with a high degree of “neural recruitment”, because of the need to maintain the contraction. This means these exercises are good at engaging specialised neurons in our brain and spinal cord, which play an important role in all the movements we do – both voluntary and involuntary. The greater this level of neural activation, the more muscle fibres are recruited – and the more force generated. As a result, this can lead to strength gains.

Isometric exercises have long been of interest to strength and power athletes as a means of preparing their muscles to generate high forces by activating them. But research also shows isometric exercises are beneficial for other areas of our health – including reducing hypertension and promoting better blood flow.

There are a couple reasons why isometric exercises are so good for the heart.

When a muscle is contracted, it expands its size. This causes it to compress the blood vessels supplying this muscle, reducing blood flow and raising the blood pressure in our arteries – a mechanism known as the “pressor reflex”.

Then, once the contraction is relaxed, a sudden surge of blood flows into the blood vessels and muscle. This influx of blood brings more oxygen and (crucially) nitric oxide into the blood vessels – causing them to widen. This in turn reduces blood pressure. Over time, this action will reduce stiffness of the arteries, which may lower blood pressure.

When blood flow is reduced during an isometric movement, it also reduces the amount of available oxygen that cells need to function. This triggers the release of metabolites, such as hydrogen ions and lactate, which stimulate the sympathetic nervous system – which controls our “fight of flight” response. In the short term, this leads to an increase in blood pressure.

But when an isometric exercise is done repeatedly over many weeks, there’s a reduction in sympathetic nervous system activity. This means blood pressure is lowered and there’s less strain on the cardiovascular system – which makes these exercises good for the heart.

Isometric exercises may be even more beneficial for heart health than other types of cardiovascular exercise. A study which compared the benefits of isometric exercise versus high-intensity interval training found isometrics led to significantly greater reductions in resting blood pressure over the study period of between two and 12 weeks.

    How to use isometric exercise

If you want to use isometric training to reduce blood pressure, it’s recommended that you should do any isometric contraction for two minutes at around 30-50% of your maximum effort. This is enough to trigger physiological improvements.

You can start by doing this four times a day, three-to-five times per week – focusing on the same exercise. As you progress, you can start to vary the exercises you do, add weights to the exercise, or add in more than one isometric exercise.

Some good isometric exercises to begin with include a static squat, a wall sit or a plank. Even during these small bouts of exercise, your heart rate, breathing and arterial pressure will all increase – the same responses that occur during more conventional whole-body exercises, such as cycling and running.

The beneficial improvements in blood pressure start to manifest around 4-10 weeks after starting isometric training – though this depends on a person’s health and fitness levels when starting out.

Isometric training appears to be a simple, low-intensity mode of exercise that offers big benefits for cardiovascular health – all while requiring little time commitment compared with other workouts.

  • MIL-OSI Global: From Swift to Springsteen to Al Jolson, candidates keep trying to use celebrities to change voters’ songs

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Matt Harris, Associate Professor of Political Science, Park University

It’s 2016 all over again. And 2020, for that matter. Democrats are staring at what looks to be another coin flip election between their party’s nominee and Donald Trump.

In an election that could come down to a few hundred thousand votes in a handful of states, every voter matters – no matter how you reach them.

Springsteen’s foray into politics eventually led him to back Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in 2004 with a series of concerts called the “Vote for Change”“ tour.

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry greets the crowd with musician Bruce Springsteen while campaigning in Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 28, 2004.
    AP Photo/Laura Rauch

Matt Harris does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organization that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

  • MIL-OSI Economics: Samsung Galaxy Ring, S24 Ultra and Z Flip6 Power Red Bull Rampage

    Source: Samsung

Samsung Galaxy’s collaboration with Red Bull continued this month with the premier big mountain freeride mountain biking event, Red Bull Rampage, including the first ever all-female competition. Each rider and their team faced a daunting task: they had eight days to construct the lips, landings, and lines needed to travel from the top of the mountain to the finish line, with only water, hand tools, and 75 sandbags.
Previously, the impact of this grueling challenge could only be described in words. Now, with the help of Galaxy Ring, teams tracked the physical and mental readiness of their riders daily prior to and during the event and received personalized recommendations on how to improve their routine. When the competition kicked off, Galaxy S24 Ultra captured the heart-pumping race and all its electric moments. Galaxy Z Flip6 also helped athletes capture their own practice sessions using FlexCam – no tripod or help needed to capture the perfect shot.

“Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Smartphones just highlighted yet another example of how innovative devices can offer thrilling experiences” said Simon Callan, Head of Partnerships at Samsung Electronics America. “Red Bull Rampage was the perfect opportunity to show off Galaxy S24 Ultra’s stunning camera as well as Galaxy Ring’s groundbreaking features — from sleep analysis to Wellness Tips — which supports athletes’ recovery time by offering personalized advice based on their sleep, activity, and more.”
Red Bull competitions are synonymous with daring challenges and Galaxy Ring kept up with world-class athletes, Casey Brown and Kurt Sorge, all day and night. In the eight-day lead-up to the competition, each rider and team was hard at work envisioning and creating the best path down the mountain. Throughout this process, Galaxy Ring tracked activity levels, sleep quality, and so much more — delivering a daily Energy Score that encapsulated their rider’s readiness. Teams used these scores to determine how much rest their rider needed to ensure peak performance on race day. During the competition, these daily scores were shared on the broadcast, highlighting the impact of the preparation, and how Galaxy Ring’s personalized tips provided the competitors with the tools they needed to succeed.

“The minimalist design of the Galaxy Ring is perfect for my lifestyle. I can’t believe how much technology they fit into such a small piece of jewelry, which helped inform my recovery,” said Casey Brown. “I don’t even notice it during my daily activities, like digging or riding my bike. I can even sleep with it on without noticing it’s there.”
Red Bull Rampage was filled with excitement from start to finish — featuring jaw-dropping action, close races, and iconic victories. To capture these memorable moments, Galaxy S24 Ultra’s 200MP camera was on hand. Powered by the innovative ProVisual Engine, Samsung Galaxy’s comprehensive suite of AI-powered tools, Galaxy S24 Ultra was prepared for anything. That included capturing riders at the top of the mountain using 100x magnification or taking advantage of its groundbreaking Nightography enhancements — allowing for crystal-clear photos from the early morning to late at night.

Leeds Equipment and Kit Exchange Partnership triumphs at Sport Positive Awards 2024

A groundbreaking Leeds City Council-led partnership tackling inequality through sport has been honoured by winning a prestigious international award.

The Leeds Equipment and Kit Exchange Partnership (LEKEP), created by Leeds City Council’s Active Leeds service, sees recycled or unwanted sports kit distributed to deprived communities in the city.

A first such partnership of its kind, the innovative project addresses inequality through supporting active lifestyles and also helps to tackle the climate crisis through recycling and significantly reducing waste, aiding the city’s environmental and net zero aims.

The work of the partnership was recognised on a global level last week by winning the ‘Purpose-led Partnership’ category at the prestigious Sport Positive Awards 2024 in London, seeing off international competition from major projects around the world to win the prize.

The Leeds Equipment and Kit Exchange Partnership (LEKEP) is made up of: Leeds City Council, Yorkshire Sport Foundation, Zero Waste Leeds, Action For Sport, Run for all, Leeds United Foundation, The Recovery Runners, Leeds Dock Run Club, Leeds City College, LS-TEN Skate Park, Pendle Sports, British Cycling and Yorkshire Cricket Foundation.

Working together to maximise all available assets, the partnership responds to the needs of diverse communities in Leeds to provide appropriate sports attire and remove the stigma associated with recycled kit.

The partnership in Leeds was initially inspired by the BBC’s ‘Kit out the Nation’ campaign which ran in 2021, and has developed in the years since with more than 20,000 items of kit recycled or reused by community groups in the city.

As well as encouraging healthy active lifestyles, the project also helps to reduce landfill through a more environmentally-sustainable approach, supporting local organisations in creating their own kit donation schemes, reducing waste, and creating a community-driven circular economy promoting inclusive growth.

Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture Councillor Salma Arif said:

“This is a tremendous honour for the Leeds Equipment and Kit Exchange Partnership (LEKEP) to be recognised on an international level in this way, and we thank everyone involved who should be very proud.

“We are committed to tackling inequalities, removing barriers and addressing the climate crisis and this project shows what can be achieved through working together to make a difference. We look forward to the partnership continuing to go from strength to strength and would encourage anyone interested in getting involved to come and talk to us.”

Chief executive of Yorkshire Sport Foundation Nigel Harrison said:

“We’re proud to share this award with our incredible partners across the city. This project shows the strength in working together to address inequalities, stop waste, and remove a barrier to people playing sport or being physically active.

“The right kit and equipment comes at a cost, and this partnership is ensuring that more people in Leeds aren’t prevented from starting something new or continuing something they love because they can’t afford a pair of trainers or a piece of sports equipment.

“One of the best things about this recognition is that it will raise even more awareness of the initiative. With the continued commitment of the organisations involved and the support of the people of Leeds, the kit exchange partnership can make a positive impact on even more lives.”

Co-founder and director of Action for Sport Clive Michallat said:

“Action for Sport has thoroughly enjoyed being part of such a great scheme and partnership. To work alongside a lot of organisations who bring their life experiences and skillsets to the table can be powerful, and in this case most certainly is. We look forward to being part of the team that can develop and grow the Leeds Equipment and Kit Exchange Partnership.”

Co-director of Zero Waste Leeds Gill Coupland said:

“We’re absolutely delighted to be part of this partnership. The award is a recognition of the incredible things that can be achieved when there is a determination to work together over the long term and to pool funding to deliver really impactful results. Leeds is a generous city in so many ways.”

The next public meeting of the partnership takes place in Leeds at CATCH in Harehills on Thursday 14 November at 6pm, which will include a presentation by Sport England Environmental Sustainability Strategic Lead Denise Ludlam. Tickets are free to attend via Leeds Equipment and Kit Exchange meeting Tickets, Thu 14 Nov 2024 at 18:00 | Eventbrite.

The Sport Positive Awards celebrates people and projects using the power of sport to tackle major issues including the climate and biodiversity crises, and environmental/climate justice.
