  • MIL-OSI China: Georgia storms to first mixed team victory in World Judo Championships

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

In the gold medal battle between two first-timers, it was Georgia who lifted the trophy in the mixed team event by winning 4-1 over South Korea at the 2025 World Judo Championships at the Papp Laszlo Arena here on Friday.

Asian champion Lee Seung-yeob of South Korea started high and earned the full ippon in the men’s +90 kg which brought the first point for his team before Georgia fought back and showed their power in the next competitions.

In the women’s 57kg clash, Georgia’s newly-crowned world champion Eteri Liparteliani dominated the game by winning a massive Tani-otoshi over 2024 world champion Huh Mi-mi. Mikheili Bakhbakhashvili took the upper hand with a sumi-gaeshi over his South Korean rival Bae Dong-hyun in the men’s -73kg contest.

Mariam Tchanturia continued Georgia’s winning streak in the women’s -70kg and Lasha Bekauri sealed the victory by scoring an ippon over Kim Jong-hoon in the men’s -90kg.

“I’m so happy because I did the double, double world champion! I am very happy to be the first world champion and want to be the first Olympic champion too,” said Liparteliani, 25, who is now the first and only Georgian woman to win a world championship among all Olympic sports.

Germany and Japan shared the third place on the mixed team podium.

The eight-day World Judo Championships featured individual and mixed team events as Japan topped the medal standings with six golds, four silvers, and four bronzes from individual competitions.

  • Neeraj Chopra triumphs at Paris Diamond League

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra delivered a commanding performance at the Paris Diamond League, claiming top spot with a powerful 88.16m throw on his very first attempt at Stade Charléty on Saturday.

His opening throw set the benchmark for the evening and remained unmatched throughout the competition. Despite recording three fouls in his six attempts, the early effort was enough to keep him in the lead in a highly competitive field.

Germany’s Julian Weber, a former Diamond League champion and one of Chopra’s fiercest rivals, came closest with a strong 87.88m effort, also in the first round. Despite a consistent series, Weber was unable to surpass Chopra’s mark and finished second.

Brazil’s Luiz Maurício da Silva delivered a career-best 86.62m throw in the third round, placing third and setting a new South American record in the process.

This was Chopra’s first appearance at the Paris Diamond League since 2017, when he finished fifth with a throw of 84.67m as a junior world champion. The Paris meet marked the eighth stop on the 2025 Diamond League circuit, which will culminate in a two-day final in Zurich this August.

Chopra began his 2025 campaign with a win at the Potch Invitational in South Africa, throwing 84.52m. He made headlines in Doha by breaching the elusive 90m barrier for the first time, setting a new Indian national record with a 90.23m effort—though he was narrowly edged by Weber’s personal best of 91.06m.

The rivalry continued at Poland’s Janusz Kusociński Memorial, where Weber again finished ahead with 86.12m to Chopra’s 84.14m in wet, tricky conditions.

In Paris, however, Chopra reclaimed the lead—and reminded the world why he remains one of the sport’s most formidable athletes.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Relief for grieving Kiwis recommended by Regulation Ministry

    Source: New Zealand Government

Regulation Minister David Seymour says that red tape is giving Kiwis serious headaches, and the Red Tape Tipline has received over 750 submissions.
“A submitter to the Ministry for Regulation’s Red Tape Tipline has complained that the threshold for probate has not kept up with inflation. This means that more Kiwis have to go through the tedious legal process that is probate, while they are mourning,” Mr Seymour says.
“The maximum value for distributing an estate without probate is $15,000. This has not changed in over 15 years. In that time, inflation has increased 48 per cent, New Zealand made same sex marriage legal, and the All Blacks have won two Rugby World Cup titles.
The Ministry for Regulation found that if the probate threshold were inflation adjusted it would be about $22,000.
“The submitter said that the most frustrating part of the probate process was that he had to apply to the High Court to administer his estate. This clogs up the courts and means probate takes much longer than necessary, for estates which are of a value lower than the value intended to require probate. In the submitters case the whole process took over six months,” Mr Seymour says.
“The Ministry for Regulation’s investigation found that this is an easy fix. The Administration (Prescribed Amounts) Regulations 2009 set the probate threshold. The responsible Minister can amend the regulations with Cabinet’s approval.
“I have written to the Minister of Justice, Hon Paul Goldsmith with the Ministry for Regulation’s findings. He is responsible for the regulation.”
The probate threshold is the amount at which those executing a will are forced to go through a more formal legal process requiring court approval. Below the threshold there is no court approval needed to disburse estates, saving time and money.
The Ministry for Regulation have published a case study on the issue which can be found here: Relief for grieving families | Ministry for Regulation

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Dmitry Chernyshenko: Russian science is not faceless – it has faces.

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Government of the Russian Federation – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko greeted those gathered at the opening of the exhibition of portraits of leading Russian scientists “Science in Faces” as part of the XXVIII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

The event was also attended by the Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov, the head of the Talent and Success Foundation Elena Shmeleva, and the Chairman of the Board and General Director of Sibur LLC Mikhail Karisalov.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the exhibition traditionally starts on the sidelines of the SPIEF, takes place in the regions of Russia and ends at the Congress of Young Scientists.

“Russian science is not faceless – it is in faces. It is extremely important that such projects popularize our science through remarkable people – physicists, biologists, geneticists, mathematicians, who through their discoveries contribute to achieving technological leadership. This is a national goal set by President Vladimir Putin. We have excellent positions in the world, we see them,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko.

The head of state instructed that Russia be among the top ten countries in terms of volume of scientific research, the Deputy Prime Minister added. Another task set by the President is to increase investments in science to 2% of GDP. The role of technology customers and enterprises is significant in this.

In the fourth season of the exhibition “Science in Faces” the exposition included 23 portraits of laureates of key scientific awards. The heroes of the project represent 14 regions of the country: Moscow and the Moscow region, St. Petersburg, Belgorod, Voronezh, Murmansk, Nizhny Novgorod, Sverdlovsk, Tomsk, Tyumen regions, the Republic of Dagestan, the Republic of Tatarstan, Krasnodar Krai, the federal territory “Sirius”. The exhibition “Science in Faces” is held with the grant support of the Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology announced by President Vladimir Putin, and is part of the “Science Nearby” initiative.

“Behind every scientific victory there is a specific person who is in love with a particular discipline, a scientific field. It is important to have an idea of what attracted him to this work, to get acquainted with his biography. It is also important to talk about our contemporaries who are currently engaged in an amazing type of human activity – research and development,” said the head of the Ministry of Education and Science Valery Falkov.

Dmitry Chernyshenko also assessed the stands of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Sports, the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs, St. Petersburg and the regions of the Volga Federal District.

The Ministry of Education and Science’s stand demonstrates the ministry’s priority areas of activity. Interactive panels provide details about the national project “Youth and Children”, the Decade of Science and Technology, the development of human resources, and much more. Three agreements on cooperation in science and higher education were signed in the presence of Dmitry Chernyshenko. On the sidelines of the SPIEF, the head of the Ministry of Education and Science, Valery Falkov, concluded strategic partnerships with businesses and the government of the Altai Republic.

The Ministry of Sports stand features the GTO and Sports Museum zones, a 3D avatar of the famous hockey player Alexander Ovechkin. The exhibits include awards, cups and sports uniforms. At the stand, Dmitry Chernyshenko, Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev and President of the Russian National Badminton Federation Andrey Antropov discussed cooperation in the field of sports with the Chairman of the Indonesian Badminton Association Mohammad Fadil Imran. As a reminder, on the eve, June 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with the President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto.

In addition, Dmitry Chernyshenko, together with the head of Rosmolodezh Grigory Gurov, assessed the stand “Rosmolodezh. Entrepreneurship”. The space is divided into three thematic zones: “Past” (clothing and accessories with historical motifs), “Present” (products reflecting modern trends) and “Future” (developments in the field of robotics and medical technologies). The stand presents products of more than 45 participants of the “Youth Market” project from 18 regions of the country. One of the brands of the “Youth Market” was the Center for Prosthetics and Rehabilitation “Dinamika”, it specializes in the creation of modern prostheses of hands and feet.

Deputy Prime Minister and Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of Russia in the Volga Federal District (VFD) Igor Komarov inspected the stands of five regions of the VFD: Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Kirov, Penza and Samara regions.

At the St. Petersburg stand, Dmitry Chernyshenko was presented with information about the products of the company “Bionika 2.0” and the tourist cluster “Gorskaya”.

The Republic of Liberia is proud to announce through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that it has officially won the bid to host the ECOWAS Youth & Sports Development Centre (EYSDC), a key regional institution under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The decision was made following a competitive selection process initiated by the ECOWAS Commission in light of recent institutional relocations triggered by the withdrawal of some Member States from the regional bloc.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which led Liberia’s bid to host one of the vacated ECOWAS institutions, welcomed the news with deep appreciation and a renewed sense of national pride. Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, extended heartfelt gratitude to ECOWAS member states.

“This is a historic moment for Liberia. We are honored to be entrusted with hosting the EYSDC and reaffirm our commitment to regional integration and youth empowerment,” said Foreign Minister Nyanti.

The Foreign Minister acknowledged the pivotal role of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., the chief architect of Liberia’s foreign policy, whose unwavering support was instrumental in the successful bid. She thanked His Excellency for his direct engagement with the vetting team that visited Liberia to assess Liberia’s readiness.  She also recognized Deputy Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration, Dr. Ibrahim Nyei and his team for their strategic leadership throughout the process. Special thanks were also extended to Cllr. Cole Bangalu, Minister of Youth and Sports, for ensuring that the technical aspects of Liberia’s proposal reflected the country’s readiness to host such a vital institution. She also commended Mr. Morley Kamara, Economic Advisor to the President, for his support to the bid process, aligning it with Liberia’s broader economic diplomacy agenda. The General Services Agency (GSA) was recognized for its effective coordination and oversight of the logistics and infrastructural details included in Liberia’s application. The Minister further expressed appreciation to Senator Edwin Snowe, for his advocacy for Liberia to seek the hosting of a regional institution.

As background, Liberia had expressed interest in hosting three of four ECOWAS institutions namely, West Africa Health Organization (WAHO); ECOWAS Youth & Sports Development Centre (EYSDC) and Water Resources Coordination Centre (WRCC) previously located in Member States that have exited the regional bloc. Of the 12 countries eligible to bid, Côte d’Ivoire was selected to host WAHO, Guinea will host the WRCC, and Guinea-Bissau the RAHC. Liberia’s selection as host of the EYSDC marks a significant achievement in its regional engagement and diplomacy. The successful bid not only enhances Liberia’s standing in the ECOWAS community but also promises long-term benefits in the areas of youth engagement, education, sports diplomacy, job creation, and regional visibility. The Government of Liberia reaffirms its readiness to ensure a smooth and timely transition of the Centre’s operations and infrastructure to Monrovia and calls upon development partners and stakeholders to support the next phase of implementation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to identify and optimize every opportunity for repositioning and rebranding Liberia.

  • MIL-OSI Europe: Answer to a written question – Application of the 2020 Drinking Water Directive to football stadiums – E-001762/2025(ASW)

    Source: European Parliament

Article 16(2) of the Drinking Water Directive[1] states that ‘in order to promote the use of tap water intended for human consumption, Member States shall ensure that outdoor and indoor equipment is set up in public spaces, where technically feasible, […]’.

The directive does not legally define the concept of ‘public spaces’ for the purpose of Article 16(2).

Therefore, the definition of ‘public spaces’ must be determined at national level by the Member States.

However, the directive does provide examples of possible measures and public spaces in its recitals (33) to be considered by Member States when implementing the directive, and which could be relevant for the question on football stadiums: ‘for example by encouraging the free provision of water intended for human consumption in public administrations and public buildings or, for free or for a low service fee, for customers in restaurants, canteens and catering services’.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Why some elite athletes face a higher risk of developing motor neurone disease – and what we’re doing about it

Source: The Conversation – UK – By Johnathan Cooper-Knock, Senior Lecturer in Neurology, School of Medicine and Population Health, University of Sheffield

Mural of Rob Burrow, former Leeds Rhinos rugby league star by Jonathan Long, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA

Motor neuron disease (MND) is a devastating condition that causes progressive muscle weakness by damaging the motor neurons, the nerve cells that connect the brain to muscles. These neurons allow us to move, breathe, eat and ultimately, stay alive.

Unlike many chronic conditions linked to lifestyle, where being “unhealthy” increases risk, MND doesn’t follow the usual rules. In fact, some of the highest profile cases of MND in recent years have involved elite athletes: rugby legends Doddie Weir and Rob Burrow are two well known examples. Previous research from Italy also found an increased incidence of MND in former professional footballers.

But wait – these are elite sportsmen. The healthiest of the healthy. We’re always told that exercise protects against heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and many forms of cancer. So why would it be associated with something as devastating as MND?

That’s the question we’re investigating at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), part of the University of Sheffield, where we’re exploring how strenuous physical activity might play a role in triggering MND.

Get your news from actual experts, straight to your inbox. Sign up to our daily newsletter to receive all The Conversation UK’s latest coverage of news and research, from politics and business to the arts and sciences.

One of the first questions we asked was whether this link could simply be down to survivorship bias. In other words, do people who exercise more develop MND only because they’re protected from more common causes of death?

To explore this, we turned to genetics. Specifically, we looked at the connection between MND, exercise, and genetic mutations – changes in DNA that are fixed from birth and unaffected by lifestyle or survival.

We found that a small proportion of people who are genetically predisposed to engage in high levels of physical activity also carry a genetic risk for MND, but only when it comes to very intense anaerobic exercise. Other forms of exercise, like weightlifting, had no effect. Crucially, this link appeared to be independent of head injury, which has also been suggested as a potential cause of exercise-associated MND.

    How much is too much?

It’s important to emphasise that most athletes never develop MND. There is no simple one-to-one relationship between intense exercise and the disease.

What we observed in our genetic study was a dose effect; risk was only apparent in people performing extreme levels of activity, such as more than 12 hours of intense exercise per week. Even then, most did not go on to develop MND. But in this group, the risk of MND was higher than in the general population.

This echoes findings from a Swedish study involving cross-country skiers who took part in the Vasaloppet, a gruelling 90km race. The fastest skiers, those at the very top of the performance spectrum, were four times more likely to develop MND than the general population. However, skiers who finished in the middle of the pack had a 50% lower risk than average.

Why? We believe that extreme levels of physical activity may switch off protective mechanisms within motor neurons. These mechanisms act like safety switches, preventing neurons from becoming overexcited and wearing out. Turn them off, and you may improve performance – but at a potential long-term cost. We’re now exploring whether we can reactivate these safety mechanisms to prevent or delay the onset of MND.

To develop treatments, we first need a reliable model of the disease – and that’s where fruit flies come in. We’ve engineered flies that carry a known genetic risk factor for MND.

In healthy flies, exercise improves strength and extends lifespan – just like in humans. But in MND-prone flies, exercise does the opposite: it makes them weaker and accelerates motor neuron loss. We’ve seen similar patterns in human studies.

Now we’re testing interventions that could protect against this damage. Early results suggest the key may lie in tweaking the electrical signals between motor neurons and muscles; potentially allowing us to retain the benefits of exercise while eliminating the risks.

    Should athletes be worried?

There’s no need for alarm, just awareness. Exercise is overwhelmingly beneficial and should be encouraged for almost everyone. Most professional athletes remain in exceptional health throughout their lives.

But for a small proportion of people, extreme anaerobic training may carry a hidden risk. By identifying those individuals early and better understanding the underlying biology, we aim to develop targeted strategies for prevention and treatment – without discouraging the countless benefits of an active life.

The science is still evolving. But the goal is clear: to make sport safer and motor neuron disease rarer.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a leader on the Senate Appropriations Committee, participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Rehabilitation Science and Athletics Center at the University of Charleston in Charleston, W.Va.

The newly renovated center, which is located inside a portion of Gorman Hall, will house UC’s new occupational and physical therapy programs with modern labs, as well as study rooms, meeting spaces, a classroom, offices, visitor locker rooms and weight rooms for student athletes. In September 2023, Senator Capito advocated for and secured a Congressionally Directed Spending award for this project.

“The Morrison Rehabilitation Science and Athletics Center is a remarkable example of what can be accomplished when federal support, private philanthropy, and strong institutional leadership come together around a shared goal: to invest in the future of our students and in the health and wellness of our communities,” Senator Capito said. “This newly renovated facility will play a vital role in preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals and student athletes. I’m grateful to President Roth, the Board, and all the generous donors who helped bring this vision to life.”

“This is an exciting moment for the University of Charleston, and we could not have done it without Senator Capito’s support,” UC President Marty Roth said. “The federal funding she secured played a major role in bringing the Morrison Center to life. This facility will have a lasting impact not just for our students but for the future of healthcare in West Virginia, as it is designed to meet the growing demand for occupational and physical therapists across the region and nation. We are incredibly thankful for her commitment to higher education and to the health and well-being of our communities.”

Meant for eligible users, the promotion reinforces Bitget’s commitment to empowering professional traders with better rates, priority infrastructure, and exclusive perks.

The Bitget PRO program introduces a dynamic tiered system built to streamline institutional access to lower fees, optimized API limits, exclusive loan and custody services, and expanded withdrawal limits. The PRO+2 Level Upgrade Promotion will run from July 2 to August 31, 2025, instantly boosting trading power for both new and existing users. Traders will be upgraded by two levels based on their June trading volume, while new users can apply for the same boost by submitting proof of past trading activity or asset holdings before August 15, 2025 (GMT+8). • MIL-OSI USA: UConn Magazine: Educating the Educators

    Source: US State of Connecticut

It took only a few minutes for Lawrence Ward ’92 (BUS) and Andrea Chapdelaine ’91 MA, ’93 Ph.D. to develop a friendship over, of all things, the construction of Gampel Pavilion.

As Huskies in the late ’80s to early ’90s, they didn’t know each other, but both lived close to the stadium and watched it being built prior to its 1990 grand opening. Chapdelaine describes watching construction workers eat lunch through the windows of her dorm. Ward vividly recalls chanting U-C-O-N-N with Big Red during the inaugural basketball game — when the UConn men beat St. John’s 72–58.

“In those days you could walk into the games without a ticket,” Chapdelaine says, moving on to Memorial Stadium memories. “My friends and I always went to the football games — to be seen,” says Ward, laughing.

In a fateful twist, these two higher education leaders returned to Connecticut to start new jobs last July. Ward left Babson College in Massachusetts to become president of the University of Hartford; Chapdelaine left the presidency of Hood College in Maryland to lead Connecticut College.

Although they’d been introduced once at an event, this virtual interview is the first chance they’ve had to get to know each other, sharing their views of higher education from the top and the ways they try to balance tremendous responsibilities with some serious fun.

Q: What drew you to Connecticut? Was it more than the job?

Chapdelaine: I was in my ninth year as president at Hood and was committed to several more. But I had taught at Trinity in the past, and I loved the similarities at Connecticut College, and also the distinctions. I felt I could do well here, and coming to Connecticut was a bonus. I’m only about an hour from my hometown of Chicopee, Massachusetts, and my husband is from that area too. It’s really nice to be close to family again.

Ward: There is something special about coming home. My family lived in Hartford since the 1940s. My father escaped the Klan in deep Georgia, and Hartford became his landing place. So for me, it is powerful to come back to the place that was a refuge for my father. The city provided refuge and new beginnings for both of my parents. My mother came to Hartford as a young girl after her father died. My grandmother worked for the Hartford Electric Company here as a chambermaid. I had some of my grandmother’s HELCO service pins made into cufflinks and wore them at my inauguration.

From 16 to 20 June, the OSCE Mission to Montenegro in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Youth organized a training session in Bar, aimed at strengthening local capacities to support youth participation. The participants (22 women and 11 men) gathered from 22 municipalities, including representatives from local governments, youth clubs, and the Ministry of Sports and Youth. The training was designed based on feedback from participants during the introductory session held in Podgorica on 29 April.
The training equipped participants with practical tools and knowledge to improve youth work, aligning it with the standards of the Council of Europe, the European Union, and the specific context of Montenegro. Through interactive sessions, participants formulated action plans to implement the principle of meaningful youth participation in drafting and implementing local and national youth policies. They also gained a deeper understanding of the quality standards and competence frameworks essential for effective youth work. This comprehensive approach is expected to enhance the quality and inclusiveness of youth policies at both local and national levels.
Training facilitators, Ajša Hadžibegović and Aleksandra Gligorović, emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration among local actors and establishing a network of practitioners to share experiences and build a supportive community for youth development. They highlighted that co-operation among stakeholders is critical to addressing local youth needs effectively and ensuring youth work plays a central role in decision-making processes.
Irena Marunović, the Mission’s Youth Focal Point, emphasized the importance of giving participants the opportunity to analyze and provide feedback on key youth policies and frameworks. This feedback will directly inform ongoing efforts to amend the Law on Youth. The Ministry of Sports and Youth’s participation in the event ensures that these insights are integrated into the work of the expert and working group tasked with supporting the legal revision.
Participants expressed strong satisfaction with the training programme and underscored the importance of continuing to build on the knowledge and skills gained in the coming period.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Leeds launches the pioneering Aire Resilience Company to tackle flood risk and the climate emergency

    Source: City of Leeds

On Tuesday, leaders from businesses and institutions across Yorkshire gathered to mark the launch of the Aire Resilience Company (ARC), a new Community Interest Company (CIC) facilitating the delivery of long-term natural flood management (NFM) interventions in the Aire Valley.

ARC was created through a collaboration between Leeds City Council, Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency and the Rivers Trust as a direct response to the threat of climate change and increasing flood risk. It will focus on delivering upstream interventions that work with nature to slow the flow of water, reduce pressure on Leeds’ existing flood defences, and bring wider environmental benefits to communities across Leeds and the Aire Valley.

By establishing a long-term, sustainable model for funding and maintenance, ARC will ensure these natural interventions continue to protect communities for many decades.

ARC’s work will complement and enhance the recently completed £200million Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme which protects the city and surrounding areas from extreme flooding as experienced following Storm Eva at Christmas 2015.

The Leeds Natural Flood Management project, delivered by the Environment Agency in partnership with a wide range of organisations, is an integral part of this scheme. This innovative programme has an ambition to provide climate change resilience to the scheme by providing a 5% reduction in peak flows on the River Aire in Leeds up to 2069.

ARC will further progress this work and will fund and deliver NFM interventions upstream in the Aire Valley. This includes creating woodlands, wetlands, soil restoration, and other interventions designed to slow and hold water upstream, protecting communities downstream. These nature-based solutions also enhance biodiversity and improve water quality, contributing to a healthier and more resilient environment for both people and wildlife.

ARC receives funding through a consortium of local businesses who recognise the importance of acting now to prevent the impacts of climate change. This funding enables NFM delivery partners to collaborate with farmers and landowners in the mid and upper Aire catchment to install and maintain NFM works.

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport, and sustainable development, said:

“Leeds City Council is committed to building long-term resilience to the impacts of climate change, and the launch of the Aire Resilience Company is an important step forward. Flood risk remains one of the most immediate challenges our communities face, and it is essential that we take action now to protect people, homes, and businesses across the city and the wider Aire Valley.

“By supporting nature-based solutions alongside our major flood defence schemes, we are not only strengthening flood resilience but also contributing to our wider environmental and net zero ambitions. This collaborative approach will help ensure that Leeds remains a safe, sustainable, and thriving place for generations to come.”

Nicola Shaw, CEO of Yorkshire Water, said:

“We firmly believe that localised partnerships are the best way to deliver what our region needs. We are delighted to be a lead partner for this innovative and forward-thinking initiative. Climate change affects almost every aspect of how we operate, and it is vitally important that we take action to prepare for the challenges ahead, as well as those we are already facing.

“By working with Aire Resilience Company to harness the power of nature, we’re not only building climate resilience in our own business, but also helping to generate new jobs, support nature-friendly farming, and improve water quality and soil health across the catchment of the Aire. The Aire Resilience Company offers a prime example of how working together can unlock sustainable value, build climate resilience, and future-proof Leeds as a place to live and work for many years to come.”

Mark Lloyd, CEO of the Rivers Trust, said:

“Most human activity in the past few centuries has accelerated water through the landscape with drainage, straightened rivers, deforestation, impermeable surfaces and compacted soils. We need to reverse this process by slowing the flow to make use of this precious resource for people and nature and protect communities and businesses from flooding.

“This means taking action at scale throughout the landscape to store and absorb water by restoring natural processes. ARC is a shining example of a community coming together to make space for water and I hope it will be replicated throughout the country.”

Jenny Cooke, Flood Risk Manager for the Environment Agency in West Yorkshire, said:

“The Environment Agency, alongside a wide range of organisations, have delivered one of the largest NFM programmes in the country, covering an area of around 700km2 across the Upper Aire Catchment. This included planting woodland equivalent to the size of 650 football pitches and managing soil and land management improvements over an area the size of 1200 football pitches, to slow the flow of water and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

“This not only helps reduce the risk of flooding but provides wider benefits; from supporting biodiversity and enhanced habitats and improved water quality, to richer soil health.

“The Aire Resilience Company will continue to maintain the partnerships we have built to carry out this work and allow the initiative to flourish – we’re excited to see what the future holds!

  • ECB unveils Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy ahead of India’s series in England

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Thursday unveiled the new Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy ahead of India’s five-match series in England, which begins on June 20. Both legends were present at the unveiling ceremony. The trophy features imagery of James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar in action, along with their engraved signatures.

The Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy is a joint initiative between the ECB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and will replace the previous trophies awarded in bilateral series — the Pataudi Trophy in England and the Anthony De Mello Trophy in India.

While the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy replaces the historic Pataudi Trophy, the legacy of the Pataudi family will continue through a newly instituted accolade — the Pataudi Medal — which will now be awarded to the winning captain of the England-India Test series.

    Legends Who Redefined the Game

James Anderson, England’s premier fast bowler, brought his illustrious Test career to a close last year following a five-match series against India. Over 188 Tests, Anderson took a remarkable 704 wickets — the third-highest in Test history. Against India, he was particularly effective, taking 149 wickets in 39 Tests at an average of 25.47, including six five-wicket hauls.

“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to have this iconic series named after Sachin and myself,” Anderson said. “The rivalry between our two nations has always been something special — full of history, intensity, and unforgettable moments. To be recognised in this way is a real honour.”

India’s batting maestro, Sachin Tendulkar, remains the highest run-scorer in Test cricket with 15,921 runs, including 51 centuries, from 200 matches — a milestone yet to be matched. Tendulkar’s record against England is equally impressive, with 2,535 runs at an average of 51.73, and a top score of 193 at Headingley — which is set to host one of the upcoming Tests.

“For me, Test cricket embodies life — you give your best, and if things go wrong, it gives you another day to regroup, think, unlearn, and bounce back,” Tendulkar said. “India and England have played a big role in shaping Test cricket in a way that it remains an evolving inspiration for subsequent generations.”

“And now, as I share this recognition with my on-field challenger and off-field gentleman James, I hope that the world celebrates the essence of Test cricket even more — allowing it to traverse boundaries yet untrodden”, the former cricketer added.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to hold regional youth conference in Senegal from the 1st to 3rd of July, 2025

    Download logo

From the 1st to 3rd of July 2025, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will be holding its Regional Youth Forum in Saly Portudal, Senegal, under the theme: “Engaging ECOWAS for a new vision of youth”. This high-level meeting will bring together young leaders, representatives of youth organisations, political decision-makers and regional and international experts. It will provide an inclusive platform for dialogue on the challenges and opportunities facing young people in the ECOWAS region, particularly in the areas of employment, entrepreneurship, education and vocational training.

The conference is part of the celebrations marking the fiftieth anniversary of ECOWAS, and marks an essential stage in the regional organisation’s determination to strengthen the active participation of young people in building a peaceful, integrated and prosperous West Africa. They illustrate the ambition to forge a new regional vision, placing young people at the heart of social, economic and political transformation.

The main objective of this initiative is to create a space for direct dialogue between young people and ECOWAS, in order to harmonise points of view on the issues faced by young people in the region, and to co-construct concrete solutions to encourage their socio-economic development and civic participation.

The Saly meeting is the culmination of a series of pilot national consultations organised in several West African capitals, including Cotonou (Benin), Accra (Ghana), Yamoussoukro (Côte d’Ivoire) and Dakar (Senegal). These consultations laid the foundations for a participatory and regional process, of which the regional meetings are the concrete expression.

Through this initiative, ECOWAS is reaffirming its commitment to developing innovative strategies and defining shared priorities to strengthen the involvement of young people in local, national and regional governance. This conference reflects this vision, considering young people not only as beneficiaries, but also as key players in the development of the region. Organised under the coordination of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre (EYSDC), the conclusions of this conference will feed into the development of a strategic roadmap, in line with ECOWAS Vision 2050, and will lay the foundations for a new regional policy dedicated to youth.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Basketball betting bill published

    Source: Hong Kong Information Services

The Betting Duty (Amendment) Bill 2025, which provides for a regulatory framework in relation to basketball betting, was published in the Government Gazette today.

The amendments to the existing ordinance include granting power to the Secretary for Home & Youth Affairs to issue a licence for basketball betting and to impose licensing conditions; provisions for the calculation and collection of betting duties; and an expansion of the functions of the Betting & Lotteries Commission to cover matters relating to the regulation of basketball betting.

The Home & Youth Affairs Bureau emphasised that the Government does not encourage gambling as a matter of policy. On the regulation of gambling activities through legislation, it said the policy objective of providing authorised gambling outlets is to address public demand for certain gambling activities whilst preventing people from turning to illegal operators.

If the bill is enacted, the Government – with reference to the current regime for betting on horse racing and football – will issue a licence to the Hong Kong Jockey Club to operate basketball betting, and impose licensing conditions so as to minimise the negative impact of gambling on the public, especially on young people.

As with football betting, the duty for basketball betting will be charged at 50% of the net stake receipts.

In addition, the Government will continue to collaborate closely with the Ping Wo Fund Advisory Committee to strengthen publicity and counselling for young people.

In addition to four existing funded counselling centres, the Government will allocate additional resources to establish a new centre dedicated to providing counselling and support services for youth.

Public education efforts will also be strengthened to emphasise to young people that participating in illegal gambling or placing bets with an illegal bookmaker is a criminal offence.

The bill will be introduced for first reading in the Legislative Council on July 2.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Important skills and career choice: how Moscow NGOs help teenagers find themselves

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

Join an IT team, learn to draw in a graphics editor, adapt to a new place and make friends, and also try volunteering – the capital’s non-profit organizations (NPOs) help young city residents decide on their future profession and find their place in life. Such projects regularly receive support from the capital at annual Moscow Mayor’s Grant Competitions for socially oriented non-profit organizations. Applications are now being accepted and will continue until July 3.

The authors of children’s and youth non-profit projects told mos.ru what distinguishes modern teenagers, how they are helped to decide on a profession and acquire in-demand skills.

    Computer technology and volunteering

The Baytik Foundation for New Technologies in Education was created in Troitsk more than 30 years ago, and all these years it has been introducing children and adults to IT. For four years in a row, the organization has won grants from the Mayor of Moscow to implement its projects for young Muscovites. Thus, in 2025, the city supported the Youth IT Squad initiative, designed for schoolchildren aged 12–15.

Today, 37 children participate in the IT squad. We posted information about the recruitment on the foundation’s pages in social networks, and anyone who wanted to could sign up for training. The children come to classes once a week. The program includes theory, practice, and the development of soft skills – this is the ability to work in a team, communication skills, time management. I would like to note that modern teenagers are very kind. They want to help, be useful and needed. It is important for them not only to learn to draw in a graphic editor or model, but also to share new knowledge Daria Kalabukhova, executive director of the Baytik Foundation for New Technologies in Education, head of the Youth IT Squad project

After studying graphic editors, the teenagers created postcard layouts, printed them on printing equipment and donated the print run to the Troitsk veterans council. After mastering the basics of video editing, the children made videos for the 80th anniversary of the Victory, in which they used archival photos and footage. They were then broadcast at holiday concerts. In the summer, the children will study 3D modeling, develop devices to improve the comfort of those who move in a wheelchair, such as cup holders and phone stands. The products will be printed on 3D printers and sent to hospitals where special military operation soldiers are being treated.

The “Youth IT Squad” also volunteers. As part of the excursion program, the children have already visited the Patriot Park and the Victory Park on Poklonnaya Hill.

Contribution to the present and the future: how NGO programs help childrenSports and patriotic tent camps opened for the first time for the capital’s schoolchildrenFive new NGOs have joined the charity service on mos.ru since the beginning of 2025

From preparing for exams to finding friends

Special attention is required for teenagers whose families have moved from new regions of Russia. They need to adapt and find friends, catch up on schoolwork and prepare for exams, and think about their future profession. Since 2022, the Refugees Moscow and Moscow Region aid headquarters has been providing such families with the necessary material, psychological, and legal support. And in 2024, the To the Stars! project was launched, which helps teenagers aged 14–18 integrate into a new environment.

We decided to make the project integrative and educational. Visiting museums and theaters, getting to know cultural and historical values, communicating with people of different professions, volunteering – all this can enrich the children. Our wards visited the exhibition-forum “Russia”, VDNKh sites, the festival “Sofia-Rus. Dialogue of Cultures”, the exhibition “Birth of Scale”, attended a course in public speaking at Arina Sharapova’s school, in the building of the State Duma, the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov Maria Makeeva Head of the project “To the Stars!” in 2024-2025

There are currently over 50 refugee teenagers in the group, who regularly (two to four times a month) attend various events. Each of them can choose the areas they need — online classes with tutors to prepare for exams, volunteering, excursions to exhibitions, factories, and universities. In addition, the children have face-to-face meetings twice a month on weekends. There, they can learn about methods of psychological relief and self-help, discuss important issues of growing up, communicate with peers, and meet professionals from various fields.

Close the gaps in school knowledge

Another significant project, “From motivation to employment,” is being implemented by the charitable foundation “Simple Things”He helps the children of the Family Education Assistance Center. “Kakhovsky daisies» from 14 to 18 years old who have difficulties with studying school subjects. It is based on the foundation’s long-term work to support children without parental care. Last year, the initiative received a grant from the Mayor of Moscow.

Together with the center’s specialists, we help teenagers decide on their future profession in accordance with their interests and capabilities. To enter college in the chosen field, you need to get a certificate with good grades, because the results of the competition are summed up based on the average score. To do this, you need to pass the OGE, and our task is to help the child prepare for the exams. Classes with tutors are held in conjunction with trainings conducted by psychologists and career guidance specialists. It should be noted that many teenagers are interested in this, they receive tangible benefits. For example, at a meeting with a coach, there were twice as many participants as we expected Zoya Glukhova Director of the charity fund “Simple Things”, head of the project “From motivation to employment”

From January to May, 30 teenagers took part in the project. Many of them are ninth-grade graduates who have already decided which colleges they will apply to.

In September, the project will continue its work and another 15 people will be able to attend the meetings. Not only classes and trainings, but also excursions are planned for them – an introduction to different professions, for example, an office manager and a barista. Owners of companies who built their business from scratch and achieved great success will also talk about their personal experience.

The route to the sport is built

The project “Sports Navigator” of the scientific and consulting center “Sports Perspective” is designed for older participants, students of colleges and universities. It received grant support last year.

The project has several objectives: to introduce students of sports colleges and universities to career prospects, to popularize physical education among all young people, and to develop digital tools with which everyone could find a suitable option for events.

An important part of the project is business games dedicated to sports professions. We invited teams of students and teachers from sports, pedagogical and economic colleges and universities. We offered them to discuss one of the current issues of modern sports and develop a project. For example, at one of the games, the participants thought over the work of a professional phygital club, it was necessary to ensure its payback and high results. In addition, we held meetings with students in universities and colleges, with children in sports schools and discussed with them the possibilities of using digital solutions in sports Dmitry Chernonog, head of the Sports Perspective Center

Each participant in the games received an invitation to connect to the Sports Navigator chatbot developed within the project. Here, you need to indicate your height, weight, field of study, interests, and training frequency. Based on the answers, the chatbot gives recommendations on the possibility of professional realization in sports and options for comfortable physical activity. In addition, the system can recommend a suitable profession in this field – from a fitness instructor to a sports journalist. The developers plan to set up analysis of the results using neural networks, make recommendations more accurate, and also open access to the chatbot to everyone.

In April, the center held the festival “Sport and Profession 2.0” at the Russian University of Sports “GCOLIFK”. It was attended by more than 180 students of sports schools, students of physical education colleges and universities, as well as parents and teachers. They got acquainted with innovative sports, including drone racing and sports programming, and discussed what qualities a professional in this field should have and how to start a career in it.
