NCC cadets successfully summit Mount Everest for the third time; return safely to base camp

In a proud moment for the nation, a ten-member mountaineering team of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) has successfully scaled Mount Everest (8,848.86 metres), the world’s highest peak. According to the Ministry of Defence, the cadets reached the summit on Sunday and safely returned to the Everest Base Camp on Monday. This marks NCC’s third successful expedition to Mount Everest, following previous feats in 2013 and 2016.

This year’s team comprised an equal number of boy and girl cadets, all first-time climbers, selected through a rigorous national-level process. With an average age of just 19 years—and the youngest cadet being only 16—the team has been hailed for its exceptional determination, discipline, and endurance.

The cadets who reached the summit are Cadet Monika from Rajasthan, Cadet Pratima Rai from West Bengal, Cadet Rifiness Warjri from Meghalaya, Cadet Kritika Sharma from Himachal Pradesh, Cadet Abida Afreen from Ladakh, Cadet Mohit Knathia from Jammu & Kashmir, Cadet Padma Namgail from Chandigarh, Cadet Virendra Singh Samant from Uttarakhand, Cadet Sachin Kumar from Uttarakhand, and Cadet Mukul Bangwal from Uttarakhand.

Their successful climb earned high praise from both Sherpa guides and fellow international mountaineers, especially for their physical readiness and high morale despite facing harsh weather conditions and difficult terrain. The cadets proudly hoisted the National Flag and the NCC Flag atop Everest, showcasing the spirit of Indian youth and their dedication to national pride.

The expedition was preceded by an extensive training programme, including a preparatory climb to Mt Abi Gamin and a winter camp at the Army Mountaineering Institute at the Siachen Base Camp. Cadets were selected for the Everest mission based on their performance in these stages.

Flagged off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on April 3, the mission was conducted with strict adherence to safety protocols and operational standards. As mental health needs rise globally, Cambodia is taking a significant step forward by preparing to join the WHO Special Initiative for Mental Health (SIMH). With plans underway to hold the SIMH Design Workshop in mid-2025, Cambodia is poised to strengthen its mental health system through a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach led by the Ministry of Health and supported by WHO.

The design workshop will lay the foundation for tailored mental health actions under the WHO SIMH, with technical collaboration between Cambodia’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse (DMHSA), the Department of International Cooperation (DIC), and WHO.

Strengthening the foundations

While the groundwork for the Initiative moves forward, Cambodia has also made notable progress in recent years, enhancing community mental health support through key technical working groups. Two priority areas show promising momentum:

1. Guidelines for Online Crisis Counseling

In response to growing demand for accessible and timely mental health support, Cambodia developed national Guidelines for Online Crisis Counseling. These guidelines, spearheaded by the Technical Working Group under the leadership of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, establish clear protocols and ethical standards for delivering crisis support through digital platforms.

The guidelines were finalized through a collaborative process. Once adopted, they are expected to be a vital tool for expanding access to safe and responsive mental health care — particularly for people in remote and underserved areas.

2. Psychological First Aid (PFA) Training for Schools

Recognizing the urgent need for youth-centered mental health support, the School Health Department (SHD) of the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport has led the development of a new Psychological First Aid (PFA) training curriculum for schools. The curriculum equips school personnel with essential skills to provide early psychosocial support to students affected by stress, trauma, or crisis.

After technical review and refinement, the final curriculum is ready for pilot testing. The pilot will inform further national scale-up, with the aim of embedding mental health support into Cambodia’s broader school health system.

Looking ahead

The WHO Special Initiative for Mental Health aims to support 100 million more people world-wide to access quality, affordable mental health care by advancing mental health policies, services, and human rights. With strong national leadership and technical momentum already underway, Cambodia is well-positioned to adapt and localize the Initiative to its context — building a more resilient and inclusive system of care for all.

On May 17, the Polytechnic Park hosted the traditional track and field race in memory of Hero of the Soviet Union Viktor Lyagin. The event dedicated to the graduate of our institute has been held since 1972. For several years now, the race at the Polytechnic has rightfully been considered a large-scale city event.

The race was opened by the Vice-Rector for Youth Policy and Communication Technologies of SPbPU Maxim Pasholikov.

The strength of the Polytechnic University is in its people, its Heroes and traditions. Anyone who finds themselves in the university family is involuntarily immersed in our culture and environment, which shapes their personality. The run named after Hero of the USSR Viktor Lyagin, which has been held for over 55 years, is a vivid confirmation of this. The event not only bears the name of an outstanding intelligence officer, a graduate of the university, but also cultivates willpower. After all, everyone who accepts this sports challenge, overcoming themselves, develops, achieves their goal and becomes a hero for themselves, their family and immediate environment, being an example. Through the prism of such traditions, we learn to achieve results in simple things, which over time becomes a habit, and we no longer see the possibility of behaving differently, – noted Maxim Pasholikov.

Viktor Lyagin’s grandson, Aleksey Esipov, was present at the race and thanked the Polytechnic for preserving the memory of the hero.

This sporting event is dedicated to my grandfather, intelligence officer and outstanding polytechnician Viktor Lyagin. Viktor Aleksandrovich became a successful engineer, thanks to which he was appointed head of scientific and technical intelligence. He had great prospects, but the war began. He was sent to Nikolaev, where his group carried out the most significant sabotage. Viktor Aleksandrovich himself was an athlete and paid great attention to volleyball and weightlifting, – Alexey Esipov emphasized.

By the will of fate, the family of Alexey Esipov met for the first time with relatives Alexey and Natalya Kochkarev, with whom they had lost contact for many years. This year, the Kochkarev couple came to the race for the first time, and a fateful meeting took place.

I decided to honor the memory of the outstanding polytechnician in this way and pay tribute to his contribution to the common victory. My family has many ties to the Polytechnic. My father was an associate professor at the power engineering faculty, worked at the Hydro Tower. My mother worked at the metallurgy faculty. I graduated from the Polytechnic and then worked here. Therefore, we are hereditary polytechnicians, – said Alexey Kochkarev.

Our paths diverged. But what a coincidence! It was at the Polytechnic that I met my relatives again, – Alexey Esipov was surprised.

Alexey Esipov came to the race with his daughter Tatyana Leonchenkova and granddaughter Alina. The girl is in the third grade, enjoys football and swimming. Viktor Lyagin’s great-great-granddaughter decided to participate in the race dedicated to his memory.

Perhaps Alina’s athletic abilities were inherited from her great-great-grandfather. We love the Polytechnic University and visit it often. We plan to enroll Alina in programming classes. It is important that the university carefully preserves the memory of the Great Patriotic War. No one is forgotten, and nothing is forgotten. This is truly the very memory that is very dear, – shared Tatyana Leonchenkova.

Time flew by while chatting. And then the participants were called to a warm-up led by Kristina Kapinus, a member of the Russian Nordic walking team. After that, experienced athletes and newcomers checked their equipment and went to the start. To the encouraging shouts of the spectators, the runners covered a distance of five kilometers.

The participants of the children’s race also received no less support – boys and girls ran 800 meters.

Yulia Kurakina took first place, Grigory Khrustalev finished second, and Alexander Kabanov showed the third time.

Yulia Kurakina started running only a year ago, and her first place came as a surprise to her family.

I play chess, dance, and running is just a hobby, Yulia shared.

At the competition, Yulia was supported by her mother Svetlana. She said: We visited the Polytechnic for the first time and were pleasantly surprised by the friendly atmosphere and warm relations between the participants.

Nine-year-old Vasilisa Ambrazhey won the hearts of the audience with her willpower and incredible fortitude. She participated in the race for the first time and successfully overcame the adult distance. Then Vasilisa ran half a circle to meet her mother and support her at the finish line. But the girl did not stop there – she took part in the children’s race together with her brother Fyodor.

I have been swimming since I was three and doing acrobatics since I was six. Before, I only ran at school during physical education classes. So, at the Polytechnic, I covered such a serious distance for the first time, Vasilisa shared.

Her mother, Natalia Rybakova, works as a leading specialist at the Center for Continuing Professional Education of the Advanced Engineering School “Digital Engineering”.

We enjoyed spending Saturday morning in the Polytechnic University park. Such events are very useful, as they allow you to participate in the life of the university, get to know your colleagues from a new side and get involved in sports, – noted Natalia Rybakova.

Evgeniy Chuchmanov is a 2nd year Bachelor’s student at the Civil Engineering Institute. He has been a professional skier since childhood.

Running is an integral part of preparation for skiing competitions. When I entered the Polytechnic, I decided not to limit myself to competing for the biathlon-skiing team. So running became my hobby. At today’s competition, I did not strive for victory, but during the race I realized that I could compete with my rivals. It was a wonderful event that filled me with pride for the university. It is nice that the teachers emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle by their example, – said Evgeniy.

Maria Kiseleva, a specialist at the Department of Support of Educational Programs of the Center for Continuing Professional Education, is a regular participant in the race. The joint finish of mother and daughter took place in the Aleshiny family. Director of the Higher School of Power Engineering Alena Aleshina, having taken third place in the adult distance, supported her youngest daughter in her race.

I am participating in this event for the third year in a row. The great weather, the warm and friendly atmosphere in the Polytechnic Park added positive emotions. I am glad that I was able to improve my time by a whole minute compared to last year. Both my daughters participated in the children’s distance. Lera is almost 11 years old, and she managed on her own, and Sasha is still little, so we ran the second lap together. The race at the Polytechnic is dedicated to the memory of Viktor Lyagin, a famous Soviet intelligence officer and a graduate of the Polytechnic. The first qualifying round of the XX Rosneft Summer Sports Games was held in Tuapse. Athletes from eight teams from Kuban, Tyumen, Bashkortostan and Yamal took part in the sports festival.

Sports development is one of the main areas of Rosneft’s social policy. The company annually holds Summer and Winter Sports Games – the most popular events, in which thousands of oil workers take part.

Traditionally, the Summer Games consist of a qualifying round and a final. This year, the qualifying rounds are held in May and June in nine cities across the country. About 80 teams from various Rosneft subsidiaries will take part in the competition. The program of the anniversary games consists of 13 disciplines: mini-football, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, running, shot put, kettlebell snatch, chess, shooting, powerlifting, tug-of-war and billiards. A new discipline has also been added – freestyle swimming.

During the first qualifying round in Tuapse, 106 sets of awards were contested in individual and team standings.

In many sports disciplines there was an equal and tough fight, the athletes demonstrated willpower, team spirit and high results. Thus, an employee of the Tuapse Oil Refinery performed 233 kettlebell snatch lifts, and an employee of Purneftegaz pushed the shot 12.33 meters.

As a result of a tough three-day struggle, the teams of Purneftegaz and Tuapse Oil Refinery won tickets to the final part of the XX Rosneft Summer Sports Games.

The qualifying rounds of the Rosneft Summer Games will also take place in Ryazan, Tyumen, Angarsk, Krasnodar, Samara, Khanty-Mansiysk, Ufa and Krasnoyarsk. The finals of the competition will take place in Sochi in the fall.

Sport England’s latest survey shows that over 75% York residents are among England’s most active, and that it has the least inactive population.

The Active Lives Survey of people aged 16 or over was published on 24 April 2025. It shows that 76.5% of York’s adult population meets the Chief Medical Officers guidelines to exercise for 150 minutes or more exercise a week.

This places York as the joint fifth most active English local authority area. The nationally average figure is 63.7% and York shares fifth place with West Berkshire.

York’s adult population is also shown to have the fewest people across English local authorities being active for 30 minutes a week or less. With just 12.9% of residents, the city ranks first nationally of all local authority areas. Residents living in North Yorkshire Council area scored at 24.3% and people nationally scored 25.1%.

Sport England said:

York is placed first nationally of all local authority areas as it has the least number of people being physically inactive, which is a really significant achievement.”

Sikkim Cricket Ground shines bright with historic floodlight installation

span class=”fadeinm1hgl8″>In a landmark moment for sports in the region, the Sikkim Cricket Ground in Mining witnessed the inauguration of high-mast LED floodlights on the evening of May 18. This significant upgrade, marked by a grand ceremony, was led by Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.

With this state-of-the-art lighting system in place, the venue is now equipped to host day-night matches and high-definition live broadcasts, ushering in a new era for cricket in the state.

The Rs 12.2 crore project, fully funded by the Government of Sikkim, was executed by the Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA). Work commenced in December 2024 and was completed by April 18. The system features four 44-meter-high masts, each bearing 64 high-powered LED floodlights, totaling 256 units. With each light operating at 1.2 kW, the setup delivers an impressive 2800 lux illumination at the pitch, well above the standard required for televised matches.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Justice Biswanath Somadder, Chief Justice of the High Court of Sikkim, Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, the Chief Secretary, the Chief Administrator-cum-Cabinet Secretary, and senior government officials.

SICA President Tika Subba expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state government and the BCCI for their support.

“Thanks to the government and the BCCI, this long-cherished dream has come true,” he said, also acknowledging the past challenges posed by inadequate lighting that often disrupted match schedules and gameplay quality.

A student of the famous Etruscan scholar A.I. Nemirovsky, she graduated from the history department of the humanities faculty of NSU in 1968, from 1974 she worked in the department of general history, and from 2008 – in the department of ancient literatures and literary source studies.

Colleagues and students remember Natalia Kirillovna as an extremely erudite specialist, a very modest and kind person, and a wonderful lecturer who knew how to ignite and inspire her listeners. She was at the origins of the specialization in Italian language and culture, which was carried out at NSU for many years.

Natalia Kirillovna did a lot to popularize scientific knowledge in the form of special courses and open lectures, taught classes at the Orthodox Gymnasium in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh. Historians, philologists and journalists attended her courses in Italian and Latin, history and literature, culture and art of Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome and Byzantium, the European Renaissance.

The memory of all who knew Natalya Kirillovna will forever remain the charm of her deep mind and the human warmth that she radiated.

The Secretary of State has appointed Professor Nick Webborn as the Chair of UK Sport for a term of four years, which will commence on 22 May 2025

Professor Nick Webborn CBE DL has a lifetime’s experience in high performance sport as an athlete, medical director, clinician, researcher and most recently as Chair of the British Paralympic Association.

As a world leading expert in sport and exercise medicine, Nick has worked on 13 Paralympic Games and has decades of experience in providing performance support to British athletes. He was also Chief Medical Officer for Paralympics GB at the London 2012 Paralympics and for the Invictus Games 2014. In the former role, Nick helped develop the winning bid for London 2012 and played a critical role in the delivery of athlete healthcare services for the Games.

Since then, Nick has gone on to become one of the UK’s most prominent sport administrators. As Chair of the BPA, Nick played a critical role in leading the organisation through a period of change as they delivered a new 10 year strategy which sustained Paralympics GB’s position near the top of successive Paralympic medal tables, whilst embedding social impact as a cornerstone of their work. Nick is also incredibly experienced in the world of international sport, having served on the Medical and Anti-Doping Committees of the International Paralympic Committee.

In 2016, Nick was awarded an OBE for services to Paralympic Sports Medicine and the British Paralympic Association and a CBE in the 2022 New Years Honours List for services to Sport and Sports Medicine.

MIL-OSI USA: Wearable Technologies Power Study on Differences Between Treadmill, Outdoor Running on Injury Risk

When researchers study runners, up until very recently, they have had to conduct these studies in the lab using a treadmill.

But running on a treadmill and running outside — as most runners do — is not the same. This has meant that scientific studies looking to inform our understanding of how running-related injuries occur and how to prevent them are not always transferable to the real world.

With the advent of reliable wearable technologies, researchers are now able to capture data from runners outside the lab.

A new study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (JOST Open) looked at how two key measures related to running-related injuries differ on a treadmill versus running outside on a flat sidewalk.

“In our lab, we’re really about trying to bring things out of the lab and into the world,” Laurie Devaney, associate professor-in-residence and head of the Department of Kinesiology, says. “So, this was an attempt to look at real-world forces and see how they stack up against running on a treadmill.”

Michelle Bruneau ’23 (CAHNR), a former Ph.D. candidate, was the first author on this paper. She is now a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.

The study used 28 healthy, male and female adult runners. Participants ran eight kilometers on the treadmill and the road while wearing ankle and chest sensors to track their step rate and tibial acceleration.

Step rate is a measure of how many steps the runner takes over a certain distance. Tibial acceleration is a proxy for the impact load during a run.

“When we look at running-related injuries we know that things like step rate and tibial acceleration can be associated with those injuries, especially bone-stress related injuries [like tibial stress fractures and shin pain],” Devaney says.

The researchers found that while step rates were similar in both settings, when the runners were outdoors, there was a trend toward an increasing step rate as the run went on. This is good as an increased step rate reduces the force of each step, better protecting the runner from injury.

Another significant difference is that peak tibial acceleration was greater outdoors than on the treadmill.

“If we’re thinking about this notion of forces and accumulated forces it’s probably greater in an outdoor run than it is on the treadmill,” Devaney says.

Using additional data collected during this study, the researchers have another publication forthcoming focused on motion capture data. These data provide information on how the runners were moving and what that can tell the researchers about injury risk.

This research also has applications for cadets in ROTC programs and military members who frequently suffer from the same kinds of injuries as runners.

“If we have ways to measure them out in the field, we are going to be better able to identify some of the culprits that are leading to these injuries and modify them,” Devaney says.

As wearable technologies become better and more diverse, there will only be more opportunities to study people in real-world settings rather than only in the lab.

“These increased forces are important for running-related injuries and our measurements on the treadmill are not necessarily synonymous with what we see in real-world application,” Devaney says. “[We’re] really encouraging researchers and clinicians to consider those differences and move toward the ability to measure people outdoors.”

MIL-OSI USA: Yellowstone’s thermal areas, by the numbers

Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles is a weekly column written by scientists and collaborators of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. This week’s contribution is from R. Greg Vaughan, research scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

In Yellowstone, it is often stated that there are more than 10,000 thermal features, including hot springs, geysers, mud pots, and fumaroles. How do we know that? Did someone count them? Well, yes, but making a perfectly accurate count of unique thermal features is nearly impossible, partly because they are changing so frequently. In the time it would take to map all of them, some would have died out and many new ones would have appeared. For example, a newly formed fumarole was observed in the Roadside Springs Thermal Area in August 2024, and a newly emerging thermal area with multiple fumaroles was discovered near the Tern Lake thermal area in 2018. There are also many thermal features that are located under Yellowstone’s lakes that are not included in any inventory.

Geysers are a specific type of hot spring where an underground hot water reservoir and the characteristics of the plumbing system allow discrete, episodic eruptions of hot water at the surface. There are only about 1,000 active geysers on Earth; about half of them are in Yellowstone! According to Scott Bryan, in the 2008 edition of his book The Geysers of Yellowstone, there are at least 700 geysers in Yellowstone, with at least 500 that actively erupt; the remainder are dormant.

Most of Yellowstone’s more than 10,000 thermal features are clustered into about 120 distinct thermal areas and thermal water bodies. A thermal area is a nearly continuous geologic unit that contains multiple thermal features; hydrothermally altered rocks and/or hydrothermal mineral deposits; heated ground and/or geothermal gas emissions; and that is generally barren of vegetation or has stressed/dying vegetation. A thermal water body is usually a lake, pond, or wetland area, that receives heated water from a nearby thermal area, nearshore thermal springs, or from underwater vents.

Assessment of Yellowstone’s thermal areas and thermal features comes from field observations, measurements from high-resolution airborne and commercial satellite images, and from quantitative analysis of Landsat 8 and 9 nighttime thermal infrared images.

Despite the impressive size of Yellowstone National Park (about 8,992 km², or 2.2 million acres), the total surface area covered by thermal areas is only about 70 km² (17,300 acres)—less than 1% of the park’s area. If you closed your eyes and randomly threw a dart at a map of Yellowstone, you are very unlikely to hit a thermal area! The distribution of thermal areas can be seen in an updated map of Yellowstone’s thermal areas that was recently published after careful analysis of satellite remote sensing data and ground-based observations.

The Sulphur Hills Thermal Area, north of Yellowstone Lake, is the hottest thermal area in Yellowstone, with pixel temperatures in satellite images up to 46 °C (83 °F) above the background. At Sulphur Hills, there is a large area of diffusely venting warm ground that is dotted with dozens of small, isolated fumaroles that are venting gases at 93 °C (200 °F, the boiling temperature at that elevation) right at the surface. Thermal infrared images from satellite instruments like Landsat 8 and 9 have pixels that are about the size of a football field, which means they measure thermally mixed pixels that represent the average temperature of sub-pixel-scale features. So, 46 °C (83 °F) above background is pretty hot. Given the size of the area (0.69 km², or 171 acres), its geothermal radiant power output is 40–70 MW (megawatts = 1 million watts).

Turbid Lake, also just north of Yellowstone Lake, is the largest lake in Yellowstone where a significant portion of the surface remains ice free even during the coldest winters. This is due to thermal input from nearby springs and underwater vents. The lake is the remnant of a large hydrothermal explosion crater that is about 1 km (0.6 mi) across, and it has pixel temperatures up to 28 °C (50 °F) above background and a geothermal radiant power output of about 40–74 MW.

Lower Geyser Basin is the largest thermal area in the park—at 15.6 km² (3,855 acres) it is slightly larger than the town of Gardiner, MT. Its hottest features have pixel temperatures up to 32 °C (58 °F) above background, and its geothermal radiant power output ranges from around 200 to more than 500 MW.

Summing the estimated geothermal radiant power output for all the thermal areas in Yellowstone yields values that range from 1,500 to 3,100 MW. To put this into context, 1 MW could power the average home in the U.S for about 1.2 months, or power an electric car for about 3,600 miles. Scale this up by 1,500 or 3,100 times and you can appreciate the immensity of the Yellowstone geothermal system.

In sport, the margin between success and failure is often measured in milliseconds. It could be a cricketer adjusting their foot positioning, a runner refining their sprint start or a footballer perfecting their passing.

This is where motion capture comes in – among the many approaches being used for athletic performance and movement analysis.

Conventional motion capture tracks a person’s movements by using sensors or reflective markers linked to cameras. This provides data that helps sport scientists analyse how to improve an athlete’s performance, personalise their training programme and prevent possible injury.

But for decades, motion capture in sport has been done using cumbersome suits and complex camera systems. These technologies offer high precision, but have remained out of reach for many because of their cost, technical demands and rigid laboratory constraints.

As sport evolves, so too must the technology that analyses it. The way we measure human movement is experiencing a major transformation. Markerless motion capture (enabled by artificial intelligence, computer vision, depth sensors and multiple-camera systems) is set to revolutionise sports performance analysis.

As a health and sports scientist with a focus on data, innovation and technology, I co-authored a study on markerless motion capture in sports and exercise. We reviewed and compared various motion capture options so that users can choose what system is best for their needs and budgets.

This matters because markerless motion capture provides a practical alternative that’s accessible, scalable and adaptable to real-world settings. It’s a shift that promises to transform how athletes train, how they move, how injuries are assessed and how coaches refine performance.

The problem with traditional motion capture

Marker-based motion capture has long been considered the gold standard for analysing movement. Various systems use optoelectronic (devices that emit or detect light) tracking. They’ve provided researchers and coaches with precise three-dimensional (3D) data on joint angles, movement efficiency and biomechanical load. But these systems come with challenges.

Firstly, the need for reflective markers placed on the body introduces variability. Even slight misplacements can compromise data accuracy.

Secondly, these systems are largely confined to laboratory environments. While they work well for controlled studies, they can’t always capture the dynamics of real-world sports performance.

Thirdly, the cost of such setups, often reaching tens of thousands of dollars, limits their use to elite teams and well-funded research labs. This financial barrier places the technology out of reach for grassroots sport, where talent development is crucial.

The rise of markerless motion capture

Markerless motion capture, driven by deep learning and computer vision, allows movement to be tracked directly from video footage, without requiring physical markers. Models such as OpenPose, TensorFlow Pose Estimate and MeTRAbs can now identify and analyse human joint positions in 3D, all from a single video feed.

This approach has profound implications. It means that coaches can capture real-time movement data from training sessions without interrupting the natural flow of play. Athletes can analyse their technique with nothing more than a smartphone camera. It opens the door for motion capture to move beyond the lab and onto the field, the court or the gym floor.

Where markerless motion capture works best

The ability to track movement in real-world environments makes markerless motion capture particularly valuable in high-speed and dynamic sports.

In football, tracking player movement during passing drills can inform tactical decisions. In sprinting, coaches can analyse stride length and ground contact time without disrupting training sessions. In baseball and cricket, batting mechanics can be assessed without requiring players to wear cumbersome tracking suits or markers.

Beyond performance analysis, the implications for injury management and rehabilitation are just as compelling.

By integrating markerless motion capture into injury rehabilitation programmes, physiotherapists can monitor movement deficiencies in real time. A player recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, for example, can have their gait and knee valgus angles monitored remotely. This reduces the need for repeated clinic visits.

Barriers

Despite its potential, markerless motion capture is not without its challenges. While deep learning models are improving, they still struggle with occlusion: where body parts become temporarily hidden from view. Variations in lighting, camera angles and player body types can affect tracking accuracy too.

To improve robustness across diverse sports settings, these issues need ongoing refinement in pose estimation algorithms. (These are computer vision techniques used to locate and track key points of the body on a person in a video.)

Another key limitation is validation. Traditional motion capture systems have been extensively tested for accuracy, but markerless models are still undergoing further validation in sport-specific contexts.

Ensuring consistency and reliability will be crucial in convincing elite teams to transition away from marker-based setups.

A future without markers?

The question remains: will markerless motion capture completely disrupt and replace traditional systems? The reality is likely to be more nuanced.

While marker-based motion capture will retain its place in highly controlled research settings, markerless alternatives will dominate practical, field-based applications. The accessibility, ease of use and real-time capabilities of markerless systems make them a game-changer.

The former tells the sad story of unfulfilled ambition and the cruel twists of fate in the life of the formidable general, Zhao Zilong, played by Andy Lau, from his prime years to old age, culminating in a fateful showdown with Cao Ying, a fictional character played by Maggie Q, the granddaughter of his enemy Cao Cao, as Zhao is under siege in a mountain battle, highlighting the poignant tragedy of Zhao’s fate. MIL-Evening Report: Why it’s time to delay tackling in junior sports until the age of 12

Many children across Australia have begun to play their favourite contact sports like rugby league, rugby union and Australian rules football.

Many will be just starting out during their early years of primary school.

Yet there are growing concerns these young athletes may be at heightened risk of sports-related concussions due to their more vulnerable developing brains.

Our new opinion article, published in Sports Medicine, presents the case for delaying all full-contact tackling until the age of 12, based on the current body of evidence and ongoing debate in the field.

Some see this as a necessary step to safeguard children’s brains. Others worry it might leave kids unprepared for more physical challenges as they grow.

But children are not mini adults.

Why age 12?

Children have thinner cranial bones, proportionally larger heads and weaker neck muscles than adults, making them more vulnerable to rotational and linear forces during head impacts.

Their neural pathways are still maturing, so repeated head knocks – referred to as “sub-concussive” impacts, which don’t produce obvious concussion symptoms – may pose greater risks for long-term brain development.

Around the ages of eight to 12 is a sweet spot for children’s cognitive and motor development, as they make significant gains in physical fitness, motor coordination, body awareness and cognitive functions such as reaction time and decision-making.

An eight-year-old, for instance, may struggle with the rapid judgements required to align their shoulder and brace their neck properly when tackling a moving player.

However, by 12, many can execute these decisions with greater consistency.

Aligning physical growth with cognitive readiness can allow young athletes to enter contact situations with a firmer grasp of safe techniques and the confidence to use them during games.

Why this might be needed

A common misconception is delaying full-body contact means not teaching it at all.

Children should be gradually taught skills like body positioning, safe falling and correct shoulder placement before they are faced with high-intensity collisions.

This means children get time to master core skills of the sport, such as catching, passing, kicking and tactics, free from the added demands of body-to-body contact.

This dual focus on skill-based contact training and fundamental sport skills promotes a more holistic athlete development aligned with childhood development.

Unsurprisingly, studies show non-contact versions of sports have fewer head impacts than those in full-contact leagues.

Weight-based categories, such as those used in some junior rugby competitions, aim to lower injury risks by preventing physical mismatches. However, they don’t fully address poor technique or cognitive readiness.

Many leagues across the world are modifying contact rules to reduce youth injuries, with ice hockey the best example.

Some ice hockey competitions in North America raised the introduction of body checking (when players crash into each other with their hips or shoulders) to 13–14 years of age, resulting in significantly lower injury rates among younger players.

Studies also found delaying body checking did not increase concussion risk in later years, supporting the idea that “later is safer”.

The argument against

Delaying full-body contact (such as tackling) in youth sport remains controversial.

Some argue early contact fosters character and builds resilience and physical readiness despite the risk to a developing brain.

But while early findings suggest delaying contact can reduce injuries, we still don’t have enough long-term studies to prove the full impact over time.

Delaying tackling also poses a challenge, as modifying a sport’s contact rules is complex, and cultural resistance or limited coaching resources in community leagues can hinder change.

Still, many believe that with appropriate formats, coach education and a phased introduction, it is possible to balance skill development with athlete safety.

A way forward

A potential way forward involves structured, progressive skill development, and gradually teaching young players how to give and receive contact, initially in controlled, low-intensity settings. The emphasis should be focused on safe falling, bracing, neck strengthening and correct head placement.

Some experts also recommend a broader approach that makes safety part of everything in sport, including everything from how coaches teach to the rules of the game to the overall culture.

By ensuring consistency across coaches, referees and administrators, this model helps reduce the risk of concussions.

With a structured progression and strong safety culture, more children will be physically and cognitively prepared to participate in full-contact sports confidently, safely and with greater long-term enjoyment and retention.

Growing evidence supports introducing contact in a developmentally appropriate way to improve safety.

Earlier collisions may raise the risk of concussions without offering much benefit in the long run.

A delayed approach, with progressive skill instruction, may be safer and allow children to develop core skills first.

It’s a way to protect young brains and ensure every child can play confidently and safely once they transition to full-contact tackling, promoting long-term participation safely.

Top-ranked Chinese Lin Shidong is aiming to carve his name as world champion after defeating English veteran Liam Pitchford at the World Table Tennis Championships on Sunday.

Nicknamed “Stone” because his name closely resembles that word in Chinese, Lin pulled away after two close sets to win his opening game 4-0 (11-9, 12-10, 11-2, 11-9).

“Pitch[ford] is stronger than his ranking,” said Lin of his 54th-rated rival. “When we met last time, the first two sets were also closely-contested, with only two points separating us. He is quick on feet, aggressive and has great serves. I had imagined a tough game against him and prepared very well.”

Making his world championship debut, Lin admitted his ultimate goal was the top of the podium as he was seeking redemption following his World Cup final loss last month. “A world title plus No. 1 ranking will make a true champion,” he said.

Brazil’s world No. 3 Hugo Calderano, who had beaten Lin on his way to winning the World Cup, made it to the second round after beating Mexico’s Rogelio Castro in five sets (11-8, 9-11, 11-3, 11-4, 11-4).

China’s Lin Gaoyuan had a major scare before he overcame Egyptian Youssef Abdelaziz 4-2 (6-11, 11-2, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-6).

“We had not paired up for several months before this world championships,” said Wang, referring to their drop on the world rankings.

MIL-OSI China: Muller likely to head for new shores outside Munich

Bayern icon Thomas Muller expressed his desire to seek new challenges after what appeared to be his final league match in a Bayern shirt, a 4-0 win over Hoffenheim.

It took several minutes for the 35-year-old to leave the pitch and fulfill his media duties. For a long time, he soaked in the chants of Bavarian supporters and couldn’t seem to stop conducting the wave that swept through the stands.

After multiple rounds of blowing kisses, waving, and bowing, Muller offered a more telling statement that left fans speculating.

“I don’t feel stressed, but I feel the desire to play football,” the 13-time German champion revealed.

“I have to find out what is important to me and see that the entire package fits,” he said.

Rumors point to a possible move to Major League Soccer in the United States, while a transfer to another German club appears unlikely. A contract in another top European league also seems improbable.

After more than 700 games and nearly 17 years in a Bayern jersey, the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner’s farewell continued with a public celebration on the balcony above Munich’s famous Marienplatz.

In addition to presenting the German title trophy, the gathering turned into a Muller tribute. Team leaders like Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer, along with coach Vincent Kompany, stepped into the background.

For now, the Bavarian icon is preparing for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. “I might gain more information about the US football,” he said.

Media reports have linked him with Los Angeles FC, with several other MLS clubs also expressing interest. Italian side Fiorentina is also rumored as a possible destination.

Muller noted that, at nearly 36, he must evaluate each decision carefully.

“All seem to love me, to some extent, I know why, but it remains an overwhelmingly great feeling,” Muller said.

Teammates and club officials repeatedly emphasized how much he will be missed, both on and off the field.

“He’s a legend,” said German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, while 2014 World Cup-winning coach Joachim Low recalled Muller’s profound impact on the national squad.

“He was one of Germany’s greatest footballers,” Low said, adding, “The temperature seemed to change as soon as he entered the locker room.”

Even in the twilight of his career, Muller retains his trademark charisma. Known as a “space detector” for his unorthodox playing style and as a vocal, upbeat presence (“Radio Muller”), the next chapter of his career appears to be unfolding.

MIL-OSI New Zealand: Have your say on the future use of Western Springs Stadium

Aucklanders are invited to provide feedback to help shape the future use of Western Springs Stadium.

This public consultation, led by Auckland Council and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, is open for feedback, from today until 15 June 2025. It follows direction from the council’s Governing Body on 1 May 2025 to seek public feedback before making a decision on the stadium’s long-term use.

There are three options outlined in the consultation document that the council seeks feedback on. These are either Auckland Arena, Western Springs Bowl, or an option that ranges from keeping things as they are to suggesting something different for the future of the stadium.

Max Hardy, Auckland Council’s Director of Group Strategy and Chief Executive’s Office, encourages the community to say how they’d prefer to see the outer fields and stadium used at Western Springs.

“Western Springs has a rich and layered history – from the time when tuna, that’s eels, were fished in the springs, to its use as a vital water reservoir for the city, and later a stadium for speedway, sport, and iconic concerts. Now’s the time to tell us what you’d like to see here in the future” says Mr Hardy.

Nick Hill, Chief Executive of Tātaki Auckland Unlimited (TAU), also looks forward to seeing where the community support lies for this important and underused venue in Auckland’s stadium network.

“Western Springs Stadium is a special place with huge potential to evolve and meet the needs of our vibrant city and region. TAU ran an expression of interest process that resulted in two strong options, and we look forward to hearing what Aucklanders want to see happen to the site,” says Mr Hill.

The three options identified for public consideration are:

Option 1: Auckland Arena – A bespoke 12,500–15,000 capacity stadium with high-performance facilities and outer fields. Community use would include indoor basketball and padel courts. Proposed commercial activity includes hospitality options and a health centre.

Option 2: Western Springs Bowl – A permanent music and festival venue with a capacity of 50,000, using the natural amphitheatre and installing new permanent staging infrastructure. A 5,000 – 8,000 seated boutique stadium and community sport facility with clubrooms, a corporate hospitality venue and gym. This option would remain a community sports facility and the home of Ponsonby Rugby Club. 

Option 3: neither option 1 or 2; instead keep things as they are or explore other ideas – Existing arrangements could be kept. Tātaki Auckland Unlimited would manage and operate the venue for concerts and festivals and the Ponsonby Rugby Club lease could be extended. Alternative options for the venue could be explored.

There are a number of ways to have your say. These include completing the online feedback form and attending Have Your Say Events for regional organisations and interest groups.

There will also be online information session on the evening of 27 May, where you can find out more about the options and ask questions.

This consultation follows an expression of interest process carried out by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, which owns and operates Western Springs Stadium with funding from Auckland Council. Two redevelopment proposals emerged through that process, with the addition of the third option of keeping things as they are or exploring other ideas.

Public feedback will help inform a decision on the future of Western Springs Stadium.

MIL-OSI Global: AI-driven motion capture is transforming sports and exercise science

In sport, the margin between success and failure is often measured in milliseconds. It could be a cricketer adjusting their foot positioning, a runner refining their sprint start or a footballer perfecting their passing.

This is where motion capture comes in – among the many approaches being used for athletic performance and movement analysis.

Conventional motion capture tracks a person’s movements by using sensors or reflective markers linked to cameras. This provides data that helps sport scientists analyse how to improve an athlete’s performance, personalise their training programme and prevent possible injury.

But for decades, motion capture in sport has been done using cumbersome suits and complex camera systems. These technologies offer high precision, but have remained out of reach for many because of their cost, technical demands and rigid laboratory constraints.

As sport evolves, so too must the technology that analyses it. The way we measure human movement is experiencing a major transformation. Markerless motion capture (enabled by artificial intelligence, computer vision, depth sensors and multiple-camera systems) is set to revolutionise sports performance analysis.

As a health and sports scientist with a focus on data, innovation and technology, I co-authored a study on markerless motion capture in sports and exercise. We reviewed and compared various motion capture options so that users can choose what system is best for their needs and budgets.

This matters because markerless motion capture provides a practical alternative that’s accessible, scalable and adaptable to real-world settings. It’s a shift that promises to transform how athletes train, how they move, how injuries are assessed and how coaches refine performance.

The problem with traditional motion capture

Marker-based motion capture has long been considered the gold standard for analysing movement. Various systems use optoelectronic (devices that emit or detect light) tracking. They’ve provided researchers and coaches with precise three-dimensional (3D) data on joint angles, movement efficiency and biomechanical load. But these systems come with challenges.

Firstly, the need for reflective markers placed on the body introduces variability. Even slight misplacements can compromise data accuracy.

Secondly, these systems are largely confined to laboratory environments. While they work well for controlled studies, they can’t always capture the dynamics of real-world sports performance.

Thirdly, the cost of such setups, often reaching tens of thousands of dollars, limits their use to elite teams and well-funded research labs. This financial barrier places the technology out of reach for grassroots sport, where talent development is crucial.

The rise of markerless motion capture

Markerless motion capture, driven by deep learning and computer vision, allows movement to be tracked directly from video footage, without requiring physical markers. Models such as OpenPose, TensorFlow Pose Estimate and MeTRAbs can now identify and analyse human joint positions in 3D, all from a single video feed.

This approach has profound implications. It means that coaches can capture real-time movement data from training sessions without interrupting the natural flow of play. Athletes can analyse their technique with nothing more than a smartphone camera. It opens the door for motion capture to move beyond the lab and onto the field, the court or the gym floor.

Where markerless motion capture works best

The ability to track movement in real-world environments makes markerless motion capture particularly valuable in high-speed and dynamic sports.

In football, tracking player movement during passing drills can inform tactical decisions. In sprinting, coaches can analyse stride length and ground contact time without disrupting training sessions. In baseball and cricket, batting mechanics can be assessed without requiring players to wear cumbersome tracking suits or markers.

Beyond performance analysis, the implications for injury management and rehabilitation are just as compelling.

By integrating markerless motion capture into injury rehabilitation programmes, physiotherapists can monitor movement deficiencies in real time. A player recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, for example, can have their gait and knee valgus angles monitored remotely. This reduces the need for repeated clinic visits.

Barriers

Despite its potential, markerless motion capture is not without its challenges. While deep learning models are improving, they still struggle with occlusion: where body parts become temporarily hidden from view. Variations in lighting, camera angles and player body types can affect tracking accuracy too.

To improve robustness across diverse sports settings, these issues need ongoing refinement in pose estimation algorithms. (These are computer vision techniques used to locate and track key points of the body on a person in a video.)

Another key limitation is validation. Traditional motion capture systems have been extensively tested for accuracy, but markerless models are still undergoing further validation in sport-specific contexts.
