    Amitabh Kant on Monday announced his decision to step down as the G20 Sherpa. His resignation comes after 45 years of government service in various roles, including G20 Sherpa, CEO of NITI Aayog, and Secretary of the Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion, among others.

    “After 45 years of dedicated government service, I have made the decision to embrace new opportunities and move forward in life,” Kant said in a post on X, titled ‘My New Journey’. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accepting his resignation and for entrusting him with key policy responsibilities during his tenure.

    Describing the G20 Summit in India as a “significant milestone” in his career, Kant wrote in a LinkedIn post: “India’s G20 presidency was people-centric and inclusive, with meetings held across all states and union territories. This strengthened cooperative federalism, celebrated local culture, and upgraded infrastructure nationwide.”

    Kant also highlighted the successful inclusion of the African Union in the G20, which fulfilled India’s commitment to global equity and to amplifying the voice of the Global South.

    During his time at NITI Aayog, Kant led flagship initiatives such as the Aspirational Districts Programme, aimed at improving governance and development indicators in 115 of India’s most underdeveloped districts. He also played a pivotal role in shaping India’s digital public infrastructure, and championed innovation through the Atal Innovation Mission, manufacturing reforms via the PLI scheme, and sustainability through missions such as Green Hydrogen and Advanced Chemistry Cells.

    As Secretary of the DIPP, Kant played a significant role in rolling out major initiatives such as Ease of Doing Business, Make in India, and Startup India.

    Tracing his career to its roots in Kerala, Kant said his early exposure to grassroots development informed his later efforts — including the globally recognised Incredible India tourism campaign, which he described as inspired by the sector’s potential for job creation and economic growth.

    Kant’s next chapter, he said, would focus on contributing to India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat by empowering enterprise and innovation.

    BISHKEK, June 16 (Xinhua) — The China-Central Asia cooperation mechanism has demonstrated its high potential. And the upcoming summit to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan, will give new impetus to achieving practical results, political scientist and director of the Institute of World Politics of Kyrgyzstan Sheradil Baktygulov said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.

    Sh. Baktygulov noted that the political will of the leaders of China and the Central Asian countries plays a key role in the sustainable development and continuous strengthening of the China-Central Asia cooperation mechanism. And the personal participation of the leaders of the countries underlines the mutual respect and desire to deepen the partnership between the countries participating in this mechanism.

    According to him, this approach allows for the coordination of countries’ positions on key contemporary issues, strengthening trust between them, and also forming a unified approach to regional security and development.

    In May 2023, the first China-Central Asia summit was held in the Chinese city of Xi’an. The political scientist noted that since then, the platform has demonstrated its high potential. For example, it has managed to strengthen ties in the economic, political and security spheres, creating the basis for deeper integration in the future. China’s investment in the digital economy and logistics of the region has expanded.

    “The China-Central Asia platform demonstrates the ability of Central Asian states to pursue a consolidated policy, and also shows the major role of China as a key development partner in Eurasia,” the expert believes.

    Speaking about the achievements of the mechanism, Sh. Baktygulov noted the deepening of political trust and dialogue between the countries, the holding of high-level meetings, and the intensification of coordination on issues of ensuring security and regional stability.

    In addition, according to him, there is an increase in trade between Central Asian countries and China, the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway is accelerating, transport corridors are actively developing, the number of scholarships for students studying at Chinese universities is increasing, and exchanges in tourism, science and technology are expanding.

    “Therefore, there is growing confidence that the China-Central Asia summit in Astana will expand the horizons of cooperation between our countries and give new impetus to achieving practical results for the benefit of the region’s population,” the political scientist said.

    Touching upon the topic of cooperation between China and Central Asian countries, he noted that in recent years there has been a sharp increase in the number of joint projects, and, most importantly, there has been a qualitative leap in business cooperation in the economy, trade and energy. New transport and logistics corridors, infrastructure projects have also appeared, and visa-free regimes are being introduced.

    “Such interconnectedness is an excellent illustration of the fact that our countries strive to complement each other in order to obtain the greatest practical benefit from cooperation,” emphasized Sh.     Astana, June 16 /Xinhua/ — Interaction in the field of culture, media communications and protection of historical and cultural heritage is becoming one of the key areas of cooperation between Kazakhstan and China, Minister of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan Aida Balayeva said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.

    According to her, the desire to preserve and popularize national heritage is a strategic priority for any country, and Kazakhstan, following this course, attaches particular importance to the protection of historical and cultural monuments.

    Kazakhstan has approached this issue institutionally. As A. Balayeva said, a special commission on UNESCO affairs, headed by state adviser Erlan Karin, systematically considers the issues of including Kazakhstani sites in the UNESCO list. Among the latest achievements are nominations for inclusion of five underground mosques and ancient steppe cities.

    The Minister also emphasized the close cooperation between Kazakh and Chinese media: “This is an exchange of media products… This is interaction in the area of improving the qualifications of our journalists… This is technology.” The participation of Chinese media in Central Asian media forums and upcoming events, according to her, opens up new horizons.

    “Only through dialogue can we improve our work, expand areas of interaction… and deepen our cooperation in the field of mass media,” the minister emphasized.

    In conclusion, she expressed confidence that the upcoming second China-Central Asia summit, which will be held with the participation of the leader of the PRC, will give new impetus to the entire spectrum of cooperation.

    From June 12 to 15, the Moscow Seasons were held in Beijing. This comprehensive event became one of the key projects implemented within the framework of the cross-cultural Years of China and Russia, and also dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of sister-city relations between Beijing and Moscow.

    On June 13, as part of the business part of the festival program, a plenary session on the topic of “Cities of the Future. Synergy of the Strategic Partnership of Moscow and Beijing” was held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Beijing, dedicated to issues of tourism, culture, transport, innovation and industrial development.

    The history of China’s interaction with Central Asian countries goes back thousands of years, and the friendship along the Silk Road, passed down from generation to generation, continues to this day. Since the first China-Central Asia Summit, tourism exchanges between the countries have become an important bridge for bringing peoples closer together. At present, there is mutual interest in tourism: China and Central Asian countries have become important tourist destinations for each other, and the number of mutual tourist visits has increased significantly. China and Central Asia are jointly promoting exchanges and cooperation, opening a new chapter in the dialogue of civilizations.

    A continuous flow of tourists in both directions

    On June 1, 2024, the visa-free regime between China and Uzbekistan came into effect. On the same day, more than 160 tourists from Tashkent arrived at Urumqi Airport. They became the first to enter China without a visa under the new agreement and began their journey around the country. On November 10, 2023, a similar agreement came into effect between China and Kazakhstan.     According to the latest statistics from the Ctrip platform, the number of inbound tour bookings by users from Central Asian countries has grown by 106% year-on-year since the beginning of the year, with bookings from tourists from Uzbekistan increasing by 164%. The most popular destinations among Central Asian visitors were Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Beijing, Urumqi, Xi’an, Chengdu, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Yiwu and Qingdao. The number of bookings for tours to Central Asia by Chinese tourists showed a 74% increase, while demand for travel to Uzbekistan increased by 60%, with the main outbound cities for Chinese tourists being Urumqi, Beijing, Xi’an, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

    U-tour data shows that the number of Chinese tourists visiting Central Asia doubled in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. On the Fliggy platform, the number of bookings for flights to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan increased by 60% and 47% respectively. Tashkent, Almaty, Shymkent and Bukhara were the most popular destinations.

    In early June, Beijing-based couple Li Tao and Xie Jinhua completed their unforgettable journey through Central Asia. “We have visited 40-50 countries and have always looked forward to seeing the mysterious Central Asia. During this trip, we experienced the warm-hearted kindness of the locals, saw majestic natural landscapes, and saw unique culture. Central Asia is truly a worthwhile travel destination,” they shared.

    A variety of new themed tours

    China and Central Asian countries have become important tourist destinations for each other. Tourists are no longer limited to just sightseeing – they are looking to delve deeper into the history, culture, traditions and daily life of local residents.

    Tourists from Central Asia visit the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Museum, explore the Grand Bazaar in Urumqi, sample local cuisine, admire unique natural landscapes and immerse themselves in the region’s cultural heritage. Chinese tourists, in turn, discover ancient Central Asian cities on the Great Silk Road and taste local delicacies such as pilaf and horse meat dishes.

    Yang Shuguo, CEO of Xinjiang Xiyu International Travel Company, notes: “The deep interest of tourists from Central Asia in Chinese culture opens up new opportunities for the development of this destination. We plan to expand the range of tours to enhance the attractiveness of Urumqi in the market. Five new thematic routes have already been developed taking into account the preferences of guests, including health and business tourism.”

    Central Asia is a new popular destination for Chinese tourists. Han Jie, chairman of the board of tour operator AoYou, explains: “Kazakhstan attracts with its wealth of resources: Almaty and Astana are especially loved by Chinese guests. Uzbekistan with its unique historical and cultural heritage is also in high demand. For now, group tours for pensioners remain the main format, but as the infrastructure develops, new offers will attract young people as well.”

    Zhou Weihong, Deputy General Manager of SpringTour, announced: “This summer, we will launch two special tours: an extended tour of Kazakhstan and a combo tour of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.     New opportunities for expanding the tourism market

    Tourism between China and Central Asia has great potential. Xu Jia, CEO of Sichuan Youth Travel Service, said, “We started developing the Central Asia route in March 2023. It was just in May of that year that the China-Central Asia Summit was held, and the demand for the mysterious Central Asian countries increased sharply. Now, it is the fastest growing route in our agency.     The introduction of a visa-free regime has given a powerful impetus to humanitarian and tourist exchanges between China and Uzbekistan.     China is one of the key sources of tourist flow for Kazakhstan.     The first China-Central Asia international tourist train from Xi’an to Almaty was launched recently, marking new progress in tourism exchanges and cooperation between China and Central Asia.

    At present, the global tourism industry is still affected by uncertainties such as protectionism and geopolitical conflicts, but tourism interactions between China and Central Asia are accelerating in “both directions”. A visa-free regime has been introduced between China and Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The number of direct flights between China and Central Asian countries is increasing, with direct flights opened from Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Urumqi and other cities. Xi’an has become the city with the largest number of routes between China and Central Asia, with flights to seven cities in five countries in the region opened from the ancient Chinese capital. China and the Central Asian countries are getting closer to each other, which not only demonstrates a common understanding of development opportunities, but also serves as a living remark to the people-to-people connection under the Belt and Road Initiative.

    Through systematic policy coordination, comprehensive connectivity and large-scale industrial integration, China and Central Asia have established a new pattern of tourism exchanges and cooperation. It is necessary to closely link and integrate tourism cooperation with the development strategies and relevant policies of Central Asian countries, so as to form a new multi-level cooperation structure with different dimensions and distinctive features. We should strengthen transportation links, promote the simplification of tourism procedures including visa regime and direct flights, improve the security systems of cross-border tourism, dispute mediation, insurance claims, etc. We should promote more mutual understandings, including tourism service standards. In addition, we should explore ways to promote tourism cooperation through the construction of cross-border tourism cooperation zones and cross-border tourism pilot zones. We should guide market players to jointly build tourism infrastructure, and explore policies such as cross-border investment insurance. We should integrate the cultural heritage of the Silk Road, natural landscapes, railways and cross-border self-drive routes, develop China-Central Asia tourist routes, and promote the launch of more cross-border tourist trains with cultural and regional characteristics. We should create more active tourism products, services and business models through forms such as “tourism”.

    Third, we need to enhance the visibility of cooperation results. We need to transform policies related to tourism exchanges and cooperation between China and Central Asia into opportunities that are accessible to the people. We need to build the brand image of the Cultural Silk Road plan, enhance public participation in the selection of the cultural and tourism capital of China and Central Asia, and improve people’s sense of satisfaction.     On May 29, the first international tourist train “China – Central Asia” with more than 200 passengers departed from the platform of the Xi’an railway station and headed west – to the Kazakh city of Almaty. Thus, a new channel of humanitarian exchanges linking China and Central Asia was opened.

    Traveling in “cultural salons on wheels”

    The train route includes a section in China and a section in Central Asia. For the convenience of passengers, the railway services of China and Kazakhstan have introduced a single procedure for border control. The full circular route takes 10 days.

    “It’s very exciting! It’s my first time traveling abroad by train!” said Yu Min from Xi’an, heading to Kazakhstan.

    The body of the tourist train is decorated with the theme of the “Golden Bridge of the Silk Road”, and the interior harmoniously interweaves elements of Xi’an architecture: the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, ancient city walls, the Bell Tower, as well as iconic landmarks of Kazakhstan. This creates a unique atmosphere of the charm of the Great Silk Road.

    During the train ride, various events were held daily according to the schedule: presentations and master classes on traditional Chinese medicine, lectures on cultural heritage, exhibitions and interactive activities with elements of intangible cultural heritage, as well as live performances by calligraphers and artists, and theatrical performances. The active interaction of passengers of different nationalities became the most vivid embodiment of the dialogue of civilizations.

    “The launch of the China-Central Asia International Tourist Train from Xi’an to Almaty is a clear example of how the railway promotes people-to-people exchanges under the Belt and Road Initiative,” said Hui Lixia, deputy director of the Xi’an Office of China State Railway Corporation. “We have created a cozy, comfortable and culturally rich environment for passengers. Our goal is to make this special train a showcase of Shaanxi Province’s openness and a ‘Silk Road Express’ that brings together the peoples of China and Central Asian countries.”

    Local residents are happy to participate in interactive activities

    On May 31, the tourist train arrived in Almaty. In Kazakhstan, the tourists were given a ceremonial welcome: hospitable locals in national costumes greeted the guests who arrived from China with songs and dances. A series of bright events immediately began.

    There were the expressive masks of the Qinqiang opera, the interior painting of “neihua”, the fine art of Xi’an paper cutting, the festive New Year popular prints of “nianhua”, and the iridescent colors of the Tang dyeing technique of “liucai”.

    The cultural fair featured 10 intangible cultural heritage items that delighted Almaty residents. They watched the craftsmanship with interest and participated in master classes themselves, learning about Chinese culture.

    The cultural exchange and archaeology program included three events: a photo exhibition, “The Breath of the Silk Road,” a visit to archaeological excavations, and thematic lectures that comprehensively revealed the cultural synthesis of eras and told the story of the dialogue of civilizations.

    Paving New Paths for Mutual Connections

    On June 7, the tourist train returned to Xi’an station, completing a 3,600-kilometer journey along the Silk Road, where steel rails became a bridge for cultural convergence.

    “Today’s food is absolutely delicious! My friends and I really enjoyed it,” Meruert from Kazakhstan said happily after trying Xi’an lamb soup with pieces of bread.

    2025 has been declared the “Year of China Tourism” in Kazakhstan, and the launch of the first international tourist train “China-Central Asia” from Xi’an to Almaty has not only opened a new channel for deepening mutual ties and people-to-people exchanges, but also pressed the “accelerate button” in China-Kazakhstan cooperation.     URUMQI, June 16 (Xinhua) — Located in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and close to the border with Kazakhstan, Horgos Port is the country’s first-class land port with the longest history and the largest total shipping volume in the western region.

    In recent years, it has become an important window for exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

    According to data as of June 13, since the beginning of 2025, the total volume of passenger traffic through the Khorgos checkpoint and the number of vehicles that have passed customs and border checks in both directions at this border crossing amounted to 620 thousand person-times and 223 thousand units, respectively, which is 35.3 percent and 40.6 percent more in annual terms for both indicators.

    As of June 12 this year, a total of 4,476 China-Europe/China-Central Asia freight trains have passed through the Khorgos checkpoint since the beginning of 2025, up 26.7 percent year-on-year, according to data from the checkpoint administration.

    Let us recall that, as of now, more than 80 international railway freight routes pass through Khorgos, connecting 18 countries.

    According to Li Jiang, deputy head of Horgos Customs, the launch of the above-mentioned international tourist train has laid a new foundation for deepening connectivity and promoting people-to-people exchanges between China and Central Asian countries.

    In addition, according to the results of the first five months of 2025, the flow of visitors to the China-Kazakhstan International Center for Boundary Cooperation (ICBC) “Khorgos” increased by 87.2 percent year-on-year to 3.893 million person-times.

    For centuries, China and Central Asian nations have shared close bonds through mutual learning and exchanges underpinned by deep historical ties, solid public support and strong practical needs.

    Two years ago, the inaugural China-Central Asia Summit was held in Xi’an, capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. Since then, cooperation between China and Central Asian countries has yielded even more tangible and fruitful outcomes.

    At the invitation of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the second China-Central Asia Summit in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan, from June 16 to 18. The summit is expected to take the six countries on a new journey toward building a closer China-Central Asia community with a shared future.

    GROWING PARTNERSHIP

    More than 2,100 years ago, Han Dynasty envoy Zhang Qian’s journey to western regions ushered in China-Central Asia friendly exchanges. The legacy of the ancient Silk Road has evolved and acquired more profound significance nowadays.

    Xi first proposed in Kazakhstan in 2013 the initiative to jointly build the Silk Road Economic Belt, an essential component of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

    With the launch of the China-Central Asia mechanism and the regular China-Central Asia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting mechanism in 2020, collaboration has deepened across sectors.

    In January 2022, Xi chaired a virtual summit to commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Central Asian countries. During the summit, the parties proposed upgrading the China-Central Asia mechanism to the level of heads of state.

    Moreover, the decision to establish a mechanism for meetings among the heads of state of China and Central Asian countries was announced at the first China-Central Asia Summit held in May 2023.

    Deepening China-Central Asia cooperation is in line with the prevailing trend of the world and the expectations of the people, said Xi when addressing a welcome banquet for Central Asian leaders attending the first summit held in Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi province.

    With the upgrading of the all-around and multifaceted framework, efficient ministerial mechanisms now support cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, customs, public security and more.

    Today, China has established comprehensive strategic partnerships, signed Belt and Road cooperation documents and implemented the vision of building a community with a shared future at the bilateral level with all five Central Asian countries.

    Ismail Dairov, director of Kyrgyzstan’s think tank the Regional Mountain Center of Central Asia, noted that Central Asia and China share a thousand-year history of exchanges. Today, within the framework of the BRI, both sides are strengthening ties and cooperation at an unprecedented pace, he said.

    TOWARD MODERNIZATION

    On April 29, the work to build three key control tunnels in Kyrgyzstan’s section of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway commenced. The railway is an iconic BRI project backed by the three nations’ leaders, symbolizing shared efforts to boost connectivity and prosperity in the region.

    Kyrgyz political scientist Kubanychbek Taabaldiev called the move “a great achievement of bilateral relations between China and Central Asia” that would take the ongoing projects into a new phase and “bring benefits from both economic and political points of view.”

    “The world needs an interconnected Central Asia,” said Xi in his keynote speech at the first China-Central Asia Summit. Since then, the two sides have explored further cooperation to enhance infrastructure development for seamless and efficient connectivity.

    Much progress has been achieved: Central Asia freight trains are running regularly as official railway data showed 4,725 trips were made in the first four months of 2025, up 21 percent year on year; the Kazakhstan-Xi’an Terminal officially began operations in February 2024 and is currently operating at a high level of quality; and the construction of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor has made steady progress.

    New logistics routes, including rail, road and air, now transport Chinese appliances, consumer goods and electric vehicles to Central Asia, while high-quality Central Asian products such as fertilizers, cotton, beef and mutton are reaching China faster than ever.

    Beyond transport and logistics networks, cooperation is expanding into agriculture, IT, clean energy and cross-border e-commerce, supporting industrial upgrades and better livelihoods.

    According to China’s General Administration of Customs, China-Central Asia trade reached 94.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, a record increase of 5.4 billion dollars from the previous year.

    Strengthening regional connectivity cannot only promote economic integration, but also deepen exchanges and understanding between civilizations, laying a solid foundation for regional stability and development, said Zaynidin Kurmanov, vice president of the Diplomatic Academy of Kyrgyzstan and former Kyrgyz Parliament speaker.

    CLOSER HEARTS

    From tourism to vocational education cooperation, from cultural exchanges to archaeological cooperation, Chinese and Central Asian people are being brought closer through in-depth and lasting dialogues at all levels, as well as mutual learning among civilizations.

    Recently, a tourist train accomplished the first cultural trip between Xi’an, China and Almaty, Kazakhstan.     With the establishment of Chinese Cultural Centers and Confucius Institutes, Chinese language fever and “China fever” are heating up in Central Asian countries, bringing more and more young people to study in China.

    According to Yagshy Ayjanov, a startupper from Turkmenistan who operates a company with his Chinese friends in Xi’an, their company in 2024 has provided various kinds of study services for over 800 people who want to come to China, and most of them were from Central Asia.

    “After the first China-Central Asia summit, we can clearly feel that Central Asian students have shown a stronger willingness to study in China as China means more opportunities and better employment prospects,” Ayjanov said.

    Ruslan Kenzhaev, deputy editor-in-chief of the leading Uzbek newspaper Narodnoe Slovo, pointed out that through deepening economic cooperation, promoting infrastructure development, advancing technology and people-to-people exchanges, Central Asian countries and China have developed a model of sustainable cooperation based on mutual respect and shared visions.

    Wearing VR headsets, participants came face-to-face with a digital rendition of Su Shi (also known as Su Dongpo), who vividly recounted his dramatic life — from political exile to literary legend — in an interactive narrative.

    This fusion of technology and tradition exemplifies China’s ongoing reinvention of cultural tourism. Alongside its iconic landscapes, the country is witnessing a surge in heritage-driven travel, where films, live performances, and immersive experiences spawn compelling new destinations.

    According to a recent China Tourism Academy survey, travelers show growing interest in cultural activities: Nearly 29.2 percent of respondents prioritize cultural experiences in their itineraries, while 78.3 percent express general enthusiasm for such engagements during trips.

    Cultural spaces can serve as new settings for tourism experiences and consumption, while tourism spaces can also function as new platforms for cultural display and dissemination, said Li Xinjian, executive dean of the Capital Institute of Culture and Tourism Development at Beijing International Studies University.

    In a major government reshuffle in 2018, China merged two government agencies to form a new ministry — the Ministry of Culture and Tourism — “to promote the integrated development of cultural undertakings, cultural industries, and tourism,” according to an official document. The development of culture-driven tourism has since picked up speed.

    A 2023 high-level meeting on cultural development underscored the need to promote the “creative transformation and innovative development of China’s fine traditional culture.”

    Governments at all levels have been tapping into local cultural resources to enhance tourist appeal and boost the economy. During the Dragon Boat Festival holiday from May 31 to June 2, the city of Beijing held more than 1,700 cultural tourism events, including dragon boat carnivals, intangible cultural heritage markets, and Hanfu (traditional Chinese attire) workshops.

    The Chinese capital recorded 8.21 million tourist visits during the period, up 5.4 percent year on year. It generated 10.77 billion yuan (about 1.49 billion U.S. dollars) in tourism revenue.

    Traditional festivals proved to be high seasons for travelers. This year, during the first Spring Festival after it was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, travelers flocked to temple fairs, dragon dance performances, and intangible cultural heritage experiences to celebrate an authentic Chinese New Year.

    The 2025 Aranya Theater Festival, which will open in the coastal city of Qinhuangdao in north China’s Hebei Province, will stage 29 theatrical productions from 12 countries. During the festival, cultural activities such as art exhibitions and workshops will also be held in the coastal resort of Aranya.

    The 2024 edition of the festival received about 164,000 visitors, including foreign travelers.

    With the improvement of people’s living standards and increased opportunities for travel, there is a growing demand for cultural experiences during tourism activities, and participation takes diverse forms, said Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Academy.

    Museums, historical cities, ancient towns, cultural districts, live-action shows, concerts, and music festivals have become major attractions in numerous tourist destinations, Dai added.

    A government initiative on boosting cultural and tourism consumption launched earlier this year proposed specific measures, such as encouraging public cultural institutions to actively develop cultural experiences, arts education services, and other offerings, enriching the supply of cultural and entertainment products, and allowing local governments to allocate special bond funds to support cultural and tourism projects.

    According to Dai, the integrated development of culture and tourism will be a focus for boosting the tourism sector during China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030).

    Efforts will be made to promote the integration of cultural industries and tourism supply to create more new cultural experience venues and novel tourism consumption settings for visitors, he added.

    ASTANA, June 15 (Xinhua) — The Belt and Road Initiative has strengthened academic and cultural exchanges between China and Kazakhstan, laying a solid foundation for deeper regional cooperation, Chang Yong-pan, president of the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research (KIMEP), told Xinhua in an exclusive interview.

    “The Belt and Road Initiative promotes Kazakhstan’s economic development and regional integration. At the same time, the prospects for Chinese-Kazakh exchanges look promising,” he noted.

    Over the past decade, KIMEP has hosted delegations from more than 100 universities in China. In 2018, the university established a joint research center with Beijing Normal University to promote academic dialogue.

    “Since KIMEP’s founding, we have educated 159 Chinese students. We are proud of our role in strengthening ties with China,” Chang Yong Pan emphasized.

    According to him, academic exchanges are developing thanks to high-level cooperation. In 2024, more than 15 thousand Kazakh students studied at Chinese universities.

    The KIMEP President recalled that after the introduction of a visa-free regime at the end of 2023, the flow of tourists from China to Kazakhstan increased by 66 percent, and the number of Kazakhstani tourists in China increased by 31 percent.

    “The arrival of the first tourist train from Xi’an to Almaty in June was an important milestone. I am optimistic about the prospects for cultural and humanitarian cooperation,” he said.

    Chang Yong-ban noted that he has high hopes for the 2nd China-Central Asia Summit, which will be held in Astana. According to the Xinhua source, the 2023 summit in the Chinese city of Xi’an has yielded significant results, and further cooperation should focus on finance, green development, healthcare and digital innovation.

    NEW DELHI, June 15 (Xinhua) — At least two people were killed, 32 injured and several others swept away after a bridge collapsed in India’s western Maharashtra state on Sunday, officials said.

    The collapsed bridge over the Indrayani river is located at Kundmal in Pune district, about 129 km southeast of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra state.

    “According to preliminary information, two people died in the incident,” said state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

    “Six people have been rescued so far,” D. Fadnavis added. “32 people have been injured, six of them are in critical condition. The injured have been hospitalized.”

    Kundmala is a popular tourist destination and attracts a large number of people during the monsoons.

    Dozens of people, most of them tourists, were on the bridge at the time of the incident, officials said. Witnesses reported that people fell into the swollen river, with some of them swept away by the strong current. –0–

    CHANGCHUN, June 15 (Xinhua) — The opening ceremony of a series of cultural exchange events between Chinese and Russian youth titled “Feel Jilin – Youth with Us” was held in Changchun, capital of northeast China’s Jilin Province, on Saturday.

    Around 200 Chinese and Russian teenagers attended the ceremony, which included a rich cultural immersion program and created a platform for communication between young people from the two countries.

    At the ceremony, Chinese and Russian youth were introduced to traditional Chinese culture together, and a documentary about Jilin Province was shown.

    Deputy Director of the Jilin Provincial Department of International Cooperation Zhao Shuxin noted that cooperation between Jilin Province and Russia in the fields of economy, trade, logistics, tourism and culture, etc. is becoming closer and yielding fruitful results.

    President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged the Ugandan diaspora to invest back home and also use their global exposure, networks and influence to attract more tourists to visit Uganda.

    The President made the remarks on Saturday, 14th June, 2025 while meeting a delegation of 25 members of the NRM Diaspora Cadres Initiative, led by Mr. Boaz Byayesu Kabururu and Mr. Richard Kyabihende Nkuru from the United States of America.

    The in-depth engagement at State House Entebbe focused on key issues, namely, savings and investing back home, identifying markets across North America for Ugandan products, promoting and increasing tourism to Uganda, countering misinformation and promoting Uganda’s image, attracting investors to Uganda, facilitating skills and technology transfer, and advocating for strategic unity of all Ugandans abroad.

    The team presented a strategic framework aimed at strengthening the bond between Uganda and its global diaspora while enhancing national development efforts.

    The President pointed out possible areas of investment, such as establishing low-cost housing in the areas near the industrial parks to save Ugandans the burden of trekking long distances to and from work.

    According to President Museveni, the industrial parks such as Namanve, Mukono, Kapeeka, Mbale, and others employ thousands of workers who are struggling with accommodation.

    “These industrial parks are capturing big populations, and low-cost houses would help us so that these people just walk to their workplaces,” President Museveni said.

    About saving and investing back home, the diaspora team emphasized the need to encourage structured savings and collective investment.

    Proposals included launching Diaspora-led cooperative investment schemes, real estate ventures, and SMEs to tap into Uganda’s fast-growing sectors.

    President Museveni welcomed this initiative, noting that channelling foreign remittances into productive enterprises is vital for national wealth creation.

    Mr. David Matanda informed President Museveni that they are orienting fellow colleagues in smart ways of saving, such as opening up fixed deposit accounts, which would generate 10 to 15% annual interest, and also investing in stock markets and real estate.

    “All those are wonderful ideas, because treasury bills are secure money, where the government borrows from the public and then gives you interest, for sure. So, this is a smart move,” said President Museveni as he welcomed the move.

    On the issue of identifying markets across North America and connecting consumers for Ugandan products, the team pledged to actively scout for niche markets for Ugandan goods such as coffee, vanilla, tea, crafts, and agricultural produce. By establishing diaspora-led trade channels, they aim to bridge supply chains and connect Ugandan producers directly to consumers and retailers abroad.

    President Museveni encouraged this approach, describing it as a step towards export-led industrialization. He also urged the diaspora to invest in commercial agriculture back home, especially crops and fruits that are on high demand in Europe, such as passion fruits.

    Mr. Brian Kwesiga, a former President of the Uganda North American Association (UNAA) based in Washington, DC, informed President Museveni that he had already secured an importer’s license to import alcoholic beverages, such as wine and spirits, into the United States.

    About promoting and increasing tourism to Uganda, the delegation committed to boosting Uganda’s visibility as a prime tourism destination through digital marketing, diaspora-led tours, and partnerships with travel influencers.

    President Museveni noted that tourism is a key pillar in the economy and welcomed all efforts to increase visitor numbers.

    Ms. Brenda Nangasha requested President Museveni for land to establish state-of-the-art lodges in the national parks so as to attract more tourists, who will, in turn, counter the negative publicity about Uganda abroad.

    “We have worked with the ruler of Sharjah in the UAE to build an international Airport and hotels at his cost. So, you’re right, these are the ones who will tell their colleagues to ignore the bad publicity,” President Museveni noted.

    “But it’s better if you lure those indigenous African people there to come and visit Uganda. Our climate and the food are very good. Everyone who comes here does not want to return,” he added.

    President Museveni also officially recognized the group as the principal NRM Diaspora Cadres Initiative, tasked with coordinating all diaspora engagement efforts moving forward.

    “The endorsement marks a significant milestone in formalizing diaspora contributions toward Uganda’s development agenda,” Team leader Byayesu said.

    The meeting marks a renewed commitment by the government to actively involve the Ugandan diaspora in national development and global advocacy. The endorsed team is expected to begin immediate implementation of their action points, working closely with key ministries and agencies.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday released an official statement before embarking on the three-nation tour of Cyprus, Canada and Croatia. He said this is an opportunity to galvanise global understanding on tackling terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

    PM Modi shared on X: “Today, I will embark on a three-nation tour to the Republic of Cyprus, Canada and Croatia. On June 15-16, I will visit the Republic of Cyprus at the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides. Cyprus is a close friend and an important partner in the Mediterranean region and the EU. The visit provides an opportunity to build upon the historical bonds and expand our ties in the areas of trade, investment, security, technology and promote people-to-people exchanges.”

    “From Cyprus, I will travel to Kananaskis, Canada, to attend the G7 Summit at the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney,” said the PM.

    PM Modi said that the Summit will provide space for exchange of views on pressing global issues and the priorities of the Global South and he is also looking forward to engaging with leaders from partner countries.

    “My visit to Croatia, which will be the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister, presents a historical opportunity to boost linkages with a valued partner country,” added PM Modi.

    Manish, High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, said, “The visit is going to be a historic visit for several reasons. It is after over two decades that a Prime Minister from our country is coming, and this would be the first visit of the Prime Minister (Modi) to this country… I think the most significant outcomes will be in trade, technology, tourism and investment. We will also discuss defence and security cooperation, business and people-to-people contact as well as global and regional discussions…”

    In Nicosia, PM Modi will hold talks with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol.

    Cyprus had condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and indicated that it would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan at the EU-level discussions.

    The visit will be timely as Cyprus is set to take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.

    The visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India’s engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union, as per the MEA.

    The visit to Cyprus is significant also as it comes in the middle of India’s tensions with Turkey over the latter’s support to Pakistan.

    Ankara’s recognition of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the northern region that was seized by Turkish forces in 1974 and differences over gas exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean remain a constant source of tensions between Turkey and Cyprus.

    PM Modi will participate in the G7 Summit in Canada’s Kananaskis on June 16 to 17, and conclude the five-day visit with an official visit to Croatia on June 18.

    At the G7 summit, PM Modi will come face-to-face with US President Donald Trump for the first time since their meeting in February 2025.

    “At the summit, the PM will exchange views with leaders of G7 countries, other invited outreach countries and heads of international organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues,” said the government in its announcement.

    The Prime Minister’s Croatia visit on June 18 will be the first ever visit by an Indian PM, marking an important milestone in the bilateral relationship.

    “The visit to Croatia will also underscore India’s commitment to further strengthening its engagement with partners in the European Union,” said the government.

    Chilean cherries are ubiquitous in most supermarkets in north China’s port city of Tianjin.

    The transcontinental “Cherry Express” linking Tianjin and Chile was launched in January 2024.

    Upon arrival at Tianjin Port, it took just five hours for Chilean cherries to be delivered to major markets in Tianjin and neighboring Beijing and Hebei Province.

    According to the Tianjin Port Group, in 2024 alone, the route completed over 40 voyages. In January this year, approximately 30,000 tonnes of Chilean cherries arrived in Tianjin via this route.

    This logistics channel has been essential in ensuring Chile’s products arrive fresh and in optimal condition to northern Chinese markets.

    Cherries are delicate and sensitive to temperature and humidity changes. To maintain their quality, refrigeration should run continuously during transportation.

    Tianjin Dongjiang Customs coordinated closely with the shipping line in advance. They obtained the vessel schedule and container details, developed a detailed unloading plan, and held meetings with importers, agents, terminals, and inspection sites.

    From late November to late February every year, abundant Chilean cherries can be seen at Tianjin’s largest agricultural market.

    “After Tianjin Port clearance, fresh Chilean cherries reach our market in about 2 hours. Over 30 merchants here sell them, with a daily sales volume of 200 to 300 tonnes, greatly enriching fruit supply for customers in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region,” said a staff member of the Haijixing agricultural market.

    In addition to cherries, other Chilean products — such as blueberries, frozen seafood, premium fish, dried fruits and fine wines — are entering through Tianjin Port. From the port, they are distributed to markets such as Xinfadi in Beijing and Gaobeidian in Hebei, where the presence of Chilean products is steadily increasing.

    “We are eager to further strengthen this gateway. Tianjin can be a central hub in Chile’s strategy for positioning in China — not only for fresh products and food, but also for intermediate goods and services. We are working to improve our connectivity with inland cities, where demand is growing for high-quality, safe, and traceable products such as those from Chile,” said Pablo Arriarán Ahumada, ambassador of Chile to China at the 3rd Tianjin International Shipping Industry Expo (TISIE).

    This year marks 55 years of diplomatic relations between China and Chile.

    Since the signing of the free trade agreement between two countries, the first that China signed with a Latin American country, trade between China and Chile has grown fast, driven by trade in key sectors such as mining, food, services, and clean energy.

    China COSCO Shipping Corp., Ltd. has launched a direct weekly service connecting major Chinese ports like Shanghai and Ningbo to Chile’s Port of San Antonio.

    “We transport Chinese goods — including automobiles, electromechanical products, and apparel to Chile, and bring back fresh Chilean produce like fruit and beef on return voyages,” said a COSCO representative at the TISIE.

    “The direct route significantly facilitates trade between China and Chile, with the diversity of shipped goods continually expanding,” he said.

    “China’s shipping and logistics industry provides stability to world trade. It makes it easier and more efficient to do trade,” Arriarán said.

    Chinese investment in Chile has also grown steadily. Chinese companies have invested in strategic sectors such as port infrastructure, electric transmission lines, lithium and copper mining, and the development of solar and wind energy.

    Moreover, China has implemented a trial policy that unilaterally grants visa-free entry to citizens of five Latin American countries including Chile since June 1.

    “We do think that there will be lots of Chilean visitors coming to China, on business, tourism, and leisure exploration. It’s going to be easier also for business people. It’s a very positive initiative,” Arriarán said.

    “The distance between Chile and China is great in geographical terms, but small in strategic and human terms. We are committed to continuing to build bridges, open routes, and jointly develop a future-focused agenda,” Arriarán said.

This funding was made possible by the $1 billion in supplemental Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funds provided in 2019 and $5 billion in Airport Terminal Program (ATP) funds provided in 2024 that Senator Collins secured as Chair of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee and as one of 10 senators who negotiated the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Both the AIP and ATP supplemental funding streams were specifically designed to support small and non-primary airports like Eastport Municipal Airport.

    Nearly $7 million in federal funding for the project was awarded to Eastport in 2019 and 2024. This funding was made possible by the $1 billion in supplemental Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funds provided in 2019 and $5 billion in Airport Terminal Program (ATP) funds provided in 2024 that Senator Collins secured as Chair of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee and as one of 10 senators who negotiated the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Both the AIP and ATP supplemental funding streams were specifically designed to support small and non-primary airports like Eastport Municipal Airport.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Welcoming more visitors from China

    The Government is boosting New Zealand’s attractiveness as a destination for Chinese tourists by improving visa settings and processes.

    From November, New Zealand will trial visa waiver status for Chinese passport holders travelling from Australia with a valid Australian visitor, work, student or family visa, allowing them to visit for up to 3 months. 

    “Our immigration settings play an important role in brightening our country’s economic future. More than 240,000 Chinese visitor visas were granted in 2024, and we want those numbers to grow,” Immigration Minister Erica Stanford says.

    “This will make it easier, cheaper and faster for them to cross the Tasman and visit our shores. The trial will last for 12 months and will be supplemented by further improvements to our immigration processes, making it easier for people applying for a visa.”

    Other changes include: 

    • Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is establishing a dedicated contact centre number and support in China for Chinese ‘Approved Destination Status’ travel agents.
    • New Simplified Chinese web content on the INZ website
    • Visitor Visa applicants will no longer need to have their document translations certified.  This will remove additional translation fees for all Visitor Visa applicants who need to provide translated documents, not only those from China. 

    These complement the five-year multiple entry Visitor Visa already in place and NZ’s current average processing time of five working days visitor visa applications from China

    “China is one of New Zealand’s most important tourism markets, and more international visitors means more bookings in our restaurants, more people visiting our regions and attractions, more jobs being created across the country, and an overall stronger economy,” Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says.

    “In the year ended March 2025, visitors from China contributed $1.24 billion to New Zealand’s economy, but there’s still more work to do to grow these numbers and drive further economic growth throughout the country.”
