    “This Republican budget bill is both cruel and inhumane. It punishes working families, taking away their health care and threatening food assistance for over 800,000 Oregonians. This legislation hurts farmers and small business owners who depend on SNAP purchases as a critical source of income, and it leaves Oregon’s rural communities without enough resources to fight wildfires and other natural disasters. What’s more, Republicans are doing all of this just so they can give more tax breaks to their billionaire donors.

    Over the last two days, my Democratic colleagues and I have been working tirelessly to stop this disastrous legislation from moving forward out of the Agriculture Committee. We introduced dozens of amendments, many of them straightforward fixes that would have protected food assistance for children and ensured fired Forest Service workers are reinstated ahead of wildfire season. Yet at every turn, Republicans refused to work with us and were often absent from the committee room as we held these important discussions.

    By forcing through this harmful legislation, Republicans have also shot down any chance of a truly bipartisan Farm Bill getting passed this Congress. They have sold out our farmers, seniors, veterans, and rural communities in order to line the pockets of Elon Musk and his rich friends. My constituents deserve better, and I will keep fighting to stop these massive cuts and protect Oregonians’ hard-earned benefits.”

    Washington, DC — In response to a New York Times report revealing that the Trump administration fast-tracked refugee admissions for white South Africans while continuing to block refugee access for Black and brown populations fleeing violence and persecution, Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson issued the following statement:

     

    “The Trump administration’s decision to halt virtually all refugee admissions—except for white South Africans—is a flagrant abuse of power, driven not by humanitarian concern, but by a dangerous and racially selective ideology. Let’s be clear: there is no credible evidence that Afrikaners are facing racial genocide in South Africa. The President’s claim is false, and he knows it.

     

    Meanwhile, the very same administration has turned its back on Congolese families stuck in refugee camps, Rohingya Muslims fleeing genocide in Myanmar, and Haitians escaping a nation whose capital is now controlled by violent gangs. Refugee policy should never be a tool of white grievance or racial favoritism—it should reflect our highest values of justice, compassion, and equal protection under international law.

     

    To revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from Haitians while fast-tracking white South Africans speaks volumes. It tells the world that, under this administration, Black and brown lives do not matter.

     

    I stand with the global community in calling for a refugee policy rooted in truth, fairness, and humanity—not one twisted to serve a political agenda steeped in racial division. America must be a refuge for the persecuted, not a sanctuary for prejudice.”

     

    Congressman Jackson is calling for immediate oversight hearings into the administration’s racially discriminatory refugee decisions and urges the Trump administration to restore a humane, equitable, and lawful refugee process.

    Energy Wins:

    ·     Expedited LNG Exports (Section 41003) — Expedites approvals by deeming applications to non-free trade countries “in the public interest” upon payment of a $1 million fee, eliminating a previously lengthy review process. This streamlining preserves existing legal and regulatory authorities while potentially reducing approval timelines from years to months. This directly aligns with Rep. Pfluger’s bill to strengthen energy leadership and expand LNG exports.

    ·     Natural Gas Permitting Reform (Section 41005) — Creates a voluntary expedited permitting pathway with guaranteed timelines, requiring agencies to complete reviews within one year of fee payment ($10M or 1% of project cost). If review deadlines are missed, applications are automatically approved, and legal challenges are limited. This provision advances Rep. Pfluger’s permitting reform priority and provides greater certainty for major energy projects.

    ·     Strategic Petroleum Reserve Funding (Section 41008) — Provides a $2 billion appropriation for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), including $218 million for cavern repairs, $1.32 billion for oil purchases, and directs the remaining funds to reverse prior mandated sales. This targeted investment strengthens U.S. energy security and reserve readiness and directly supports Rep. Pfluger’s priority to refill the SPR.

    Environment Wins:

    ·     Air Pollution Monitoring Limitation (Section 42105) — Repeals and rescinds unobligated funds from IRA Section 60105, which had allocated $281.5 million to the EPA for expanding air quality monitoring networks. This reduces the EPA’s ability to identify new non-attainment zones, limiting additional regulatory burdens. This acts on Rep. Pfluger’s priority to protect the Permian Basin from costly regulatory designations that could impact energy producers.

    ·     Methane Emissions Program Delay (Section 42113) — Extends the timeline for the Methane Emissions Reduction Program charges by an additional 10 years. This extension reinforces Rep. Pfluger’s success with his legislation that President Trump signed into law earlier this year. It also supports his position against the immediate implementation of the harmful program’s current requirements.

    Healthcare Wins:

    ·     Affordable Care Act Exchange Reforms (Section 44201) — Amends the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) definition of “lawfully present” to exclude Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. This change counters the Biden Administration’s May 2024 rule, which expanded ACA eligibility to include DACA recipients, a move with potential legal and financial implications. This aligns with Rep. Pfluger’s previous Congressional Review Act efforts to prevent ACA expansion to DACA recipients.

    Since you have been Secretary, you have repeatedly disregarded the law. You have illegally impounded funds that Congress appropriated, and your branch of government must implement pursuant to the law. Yet…

    You closed offices established in law, including the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, the Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman, and the Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman.

    You cancelled contracts for programs authorized in law, including shelter and services programs, and citizenship and integration grants. 

    You obstructed and roughed up Members of this committee as they conducted Congressional oversight. 

    You redirected funds to terrorize our communities, create taxpayer-funded political propaganda campaigns, and hold sick, disrespectful press conferences in my state, where let me be clear, you are not welcome. 

    You corruptly used emergency authority to avoid procurement to make Trump’s private prison donors richer by directing $45 billion to them for expanded ICE detention centers.

    You defunded work to address real threats to the Homeland, while you pursue the college newspaper editor, labor leaders, and a Harvard scientist who failed to declare frog embryos at the airport. 

    Clearly, we don’t have time for all my questions, so I will be submitting questions to the record that I expect you and the Administration to answer. 

    Here is my final question: When you took your oath did you swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States? Yes or no. 

    See, I find that laughable. You don’t behave like someone who takes that oath seriously. Let me tell you why…

    We don’t live in a dictatorship or a monarchy. Trump’s will is not the guiding doctrine of the nation, and our country is not a playground for his and your twisted authoritarian fantasies. 

    We are a democracy. We defend the Constitution, and we affirm the rule of law. We respect the co-equal branches of government, and we uphold our rights, even when we disagree. The foundation of our nation is based on a core set of constitutional rights, upon which our prosperity, pluralism, and peace depend. 

    You, however, have been leading this work for 110 days. And in that time, you have profiled and dehumanized our neighbors, betrayed our constitutional commitment to due process, undermined the courts, broken the law, engaged in corruption, and weaponized the immigration system to violate our civil rights. As Senator Murphy stated, your department is out of control, and as their leader, YOU are responsible. YOU have betrayed the sacred fundamentals of your oath; YOU are not fit to hold the office, and I, again, – to your face – demand your resignation and place that request on the record.

    Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today cross-examined Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem over the unlawful deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who the Secretary unlawfully deported to the notorious Salvadorian CECOT mega-prison as a result of an “administrative error” in March. Despite admitting his deportation was done in error and a unanimous Supreme Court ruling requiring the Secretary to actively facilitate Garcia’s return, she has taken no steps to return him to the United States pursuant to his constitutional right to due process. 

    A rush transcript of Congressman Goldman’s committee remarks is below: 

    Congressman Goldman:  I would like to go back to Mr. Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s case, Madam Secretary. But my first question for you is a pretty simple one. It’s basic civics.  

    Which branch of government does the Constitution give the authority to interpret what the law is? The judiciary or the Executive Branch? 

    Secretary Noem: Sir, going forward, the interpretation of the law, you make the laws in this body, the Judicial Branch makes sure that they have integrity and they’re applied properly to individuals. 

    Congressman Goldman:  Okay. So I’m just going to take that as the judiciary branch.  

    Now, let’s focus for a second on what the Judiciary Branch has said about this case. We know the Supreme Court has said nine to nothing– notwithstanding your statements under oath here today that Mr. Kilmar Abrego Garcia was afforded due process– that he was in fact not afforded due process because if he were, you would have seen the withholding order that did not permit him to be deported to El Salvador.  

    Now, you allege, and I guess the Attorney General alleges, that he’s a member of MS-13. That may very well be the case. And if he is, now that MS-13 is a Foreign Terrorist Organization, certainly the immigration laws would allow him and in fact to require him to be deported. I certainly would support that.  

    But the problem that we have here is that what you allege, what Ms. Green alleges, what the Attorney General alleges, is not the judiciary. 

    You don’t get to decide whether or not he is an MS-13 member. 

    And you don’t have to take my word for it, because Judge Wilkinson, a Fourth Circuit judge, very conservative, addressed this argument. 

    He said, “the government asserts that Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a terrorist and a member of MS-13. Perhaps, but perhaps not. Regardless, he is still entitled to due process. If the government is confident in its position, it should be assured that position will prevail in proceedings to terminate the withholding of removal order.” 

    Will you commit right now to give Mr. Abrego Garcia due process where you can prove your allegation that he is a member of MS13?

    Secretary Noem: Congressman, that judge that you just quoted did not say he was not a member of MS-13. Who did say that he was a member of MS-13 was law enforcement officers that encountered this individual. 

    Congressman Goldman: Yeah, he knows that. This is a Fourth Circuit judge. He knows what all of the evidence is. And he’s saying if that evidence–

    So won’t commit to follow this court order? 

    [Interruption] 

    Madam Secretary, I reclaim my time. Stop filibustering.

    Stop filibustering. 

    Will you give Mr. Abrego Garcia the due process at the Supreme Court and Judge Wilkinson has required you to give him? 

    Secretary Noem: Abrego Garcia is an El Salvador resident who is in his home country. If he were to come back to this country, he would be immediately removed again.  

    Congressman Goldman: How do you know?  

    Secretary Noem: He has received and been treated appropriately. 

    Congressman Goldman: How can you say he’s been treated appropriately if the Supreme Court has ruled nine-nothing that he hasn’t been treated appropriately? 

    Why is your opinion better and have more authority than the Supreme Court? 

    Secretary Noem:  We had instigators, two judges in immigration court that all said he was MS-13. 

    Congressman Goldman:  But you understand that that is you saying that. That is you saying that. 

    [Interruption] 

    No. That is you making that determination. The court considered all that. The judge has considered all that, Madam Secretary. 

    [Interruption] 

    If you would be quiet because I’m reclaiming my time. You are not following this court order. 

    But let’s focus on the court order because this opinion also says that to facilitate, as the Supreme Court requires, is an active verb. It requires that steps be taken.  

    What steps have you taken to return Mr. Abrego Garcia to allow him to get due process? 

    Secretary Noem: Abrego Garcia is in his home country. 

    Congressman Goldman: What steps have been taken? 

    I’m not advocating for him. I’m advocating for a court order, Madam Secretary. The court order says that you must take steps to follow the court order. 

    You are here under oath. What steps have you taken to return Mr. Abrego Garcia pursuant to this court order? 

    Secretary Noem: It’s got to be extremely discouraging to be one of your constituents. To see you fight for a terrorist like this and not fight for them is extremely alarming to me.  

    Congressman Goldman: I’m fighting for due process, and that’s under the Constitution.  

    And you should fight too for due process.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Zinke and Neguse Introduce Bill to Extend Successful Forest Management Program

    Originally authorized in 2009, the program has treated and restored 5.7 million acres of forests

    Washington, D.C. – Today, Representatives Ryan Zinke (R-MT-01) and Joe Neguse (D-CO-02) introduced the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration (CFLR) Program Reauthorization Act of 2025, which would extend and expand a successful program focused on reducing wildfire risk, restoring forest health, and supporting rural economies through proven, locally driven strategies. Senators Mike Crapo (R-ID) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

    Originally authorized in 2009, the CFLR program is a model of how communities, industry partners, landowners, and local governments can work together to improve forest conditions and prevent catastrophic wildfires. In its first decade, CFLR projects treated and restored 5.7 million acres of forest, improved 1,000 miles of trails, and maintained over 25,000 miles of forest roads helping keep public lands open and safe.

    The CFLR Program Reauthorization Act of 2025 will:

    • Extend the program for ten years.
    • Increase support for collaborative, science-based forest projects.
    • Expand the program’s reach to more high-risk areas.
    • Improve project flexibility and reduce bureaucratic delays.

    “Every year hundreds of thousands of acres of forest burn to the ground destroying landscapes, watersheds and homes. We can’t prevent every fire, but we can certainly manage our forests, so they are in better health and more resilient against catastrophic fires,” said Congressman Zinke. “The Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program was a proven success that leverages public and private entities to grow more resilient forests. When a program works, we should extend it. Montana forests must be multi-use. Recreation, conservation, and resource development all have their place and must be part of the conversation, but none of them can exist if our forests are unhealthy or burning down. The continuation of this program will promote the collaboration needed preserve more of our forests for use by the communities around them.”

    “Wildfire doesn’t recognize state or county lines, and the Kootenai National Forest in Montana and the Panhandle National Forest in Idaho share the same fire shed, the Kootenai Complex. The 80,000-acre Kootenai Valley Resource Initiative project on the Panhandle National Forest funded under the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration (CFLR) Program has benefitted our residents here in neighboring Lincoln County, Montana in several ways,” said Jim Hammons, Lincoln County Commissioner. “Treatments under the project have reduced the risk of wildfire crossing into the county from Idaho and has sustained one of the few local mills vital to our timber infrastructure, while providing jobs to our local logging contractors, many that work in Idaho forests.     WASHINGTON, DC – Today, during a Homeland Security briefing, Congressman Andy Ogles (TN-05) directly questioned Governor Kristi Noem on whether public officials who are found aiding and abetting illegal aliens to evade federal law enforcement, impede ICE, in defiance of federal law, are committing a crime.

    Secretary Noem responded unequivocally: “Yes.”

    Following that exchange, Congressman Ogles announced he will formally request that both the House Judiciary Committee and the Homeland Security Committee open investigations into Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell and other city officials for their repeated efforts to obstruct lawful ICE operations.

    “When federal agents and Tennessee law enforcement risk their lives to detain rapists, traffickers, and gang members, the only appropriate response from our leaders should be gratitude—not obstruction,” said Congressman Ogles.

    Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressmen Russell Fry (SC-07) and Mike Levin (CA-49) introduced the Modernizing Access to Our Public Oceans (MAPOceans) Act, legislation that will modernize public access to vital data about U.S. waterways. By requiring the Secretary of Commerce to digitize and display real-time marine data through GPS and smartphone applications, the bill aims to improve the recreational experience for boaters and anglers, support safe and legal activity on the water, and strengthen coastal economies.

    Building on the success of the MAPLand Act (2022) and the MAPWaters Act (which passed the House in January 2025), the MAPOceans Act would require the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to consolidate, standardize, and digitize public information about U.S. marine waters and make that information easily accessible in real time.

    Specifically, the bill would:

    • Provide real-time status updates on which waterways are open or closed to entry or watercraft, low-elevation aircraft, or diving.

    • Digitize restrictions related to motorized propulsion, fuel type, and specific types of watercraft (e.g., motorboats, kayaks, personal watercraft, airboats, ships).

    • Display fishing regulations and restrictions, including no-take zones, marine protected areas, and rules about specific equipment or bait (such as circle hooks or descending devices).

    • Publish continuously updated geographic information (GIS) data on navigation, bathymetric information, and depth charts.

    • Require the Department of Commerce to partner with non-federal entities—including states, Indian Tribes, Native Hawaiian organizations, private industry, data experts, and academic institutions—to ensure accurate and up-to-date information.

    “The MAPOceans Act is a commonsense bill to help Americans enjoy our nation’s waters and coastlines more safely and responsibly,” said Congressman Fry. “Whether you’re a fisherman or a boater, this bill gives individuals the easily accessible real-time information they need and ensures that Americans who rely on our waterways—whether for work or recreation—have the tools to access and enjoy our natural resources.”

    Today, Congressman Mark Alford (MO-04) introduced the Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments (PELOSI) Act. The PELOSI Act will stop Members of Congress and their spouses from owning or trading individual stocks.

    This follows widespread reports of suspicious transactions associated with public officials that raise concerns members are trading on non-public information. President Trump has announced he would sign such a bill into law if passed by Congress. The Senate version of this legislation is led by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO).

    “As public servants, we should hold ourselves to a higher standard and avoid the mere appearance of corruption,” said Congressman Alford. “Unfortunately, too many members of Congress are engaging in suspicious stock trades based on non-public information to enrich themselves. These gross violations of the public trust make clear: we must finally take action to ban members and their spouses from owning or selling individual stocks.”

    Background:

    The PELOSI Act bans lawmakers and their spouses from holding, purchasing, or selling individual stocks while in office, but allows investments in diversified mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, or U.S. Treasury bonds.

    The legislation gives current lawmakers 180 days to comply with the restrictions and allows newly elected members of Congress the same 180-day compliance timeline after taking office.

    Violations of the PELOSI Act require the forfeiture of any stock profits to the U.S. Department of the Treasury as well as monetary penalties imposed by the House and Senate ethics committees.

    Good morning and welcome to the East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee’s hearing on “National Economic Security: Advancing U.S. Interests Abroad.”  

    In 2019, Ambassador William Burns, one of our most decorated diplomats and the former CIA Director, described the Department of State as “adrift.”  

    Over the years, the Department has had trouble finding its purpose as functions and authorities have been stripped away or absorbed by the National Security Council, Department of Defense, and even agencies traditionally focused on domestic issues.  

    For more than 170 years, economic statecraft was led by the Department of State. This changed in 1961 when President Kennedy sought to expand the administrative state, pulling functions and authorities out of the Department to create new agencies and organizations, including the United States Trade Representative which would be responsible for conducting all U.S. trade and investment diplomacy.   

    The justification for pulling these trade and investment functions out of the Department was to improve the Government’s capacity to prioritize and support U.S. businesses, strengthen the export performance of U.S. industry, and assure fair international trade practices.  

    However, it has effectively split our economic interests from our diplomatic priorities, which has resulted in several challenges:  

    First, it has not helped increase the ability of U.S. businesses to access foreign markets.   

    In practice, the Foreign Commercial Service (F-C-S) and Foreign Agricultural Service (F-A-S) officers are few in number and often positioned at U.S. embassies without alignment to our foreign policy priorities.    

    When I travel abroad, I routinely meet with FCS personnel who explain that they spend most of their time engaged in trade shows and organizing events with minimal direct work on increasing and securing market access for American businesses.   

    Because they are siloed off from our diplomatic efforts of the Department of State, they’re restricted in leveraging the other tools in our diplomatic toolkit to assist American companies.   

    Second, the American market has been left susceptible to predatory foreign competition.   

    Our ability to protect American businesses and workers has been severely hampered, leading to calls from across the country for the Executive to act and repatriate entire industries and sectors.  

      

    President Trump, like his predecessors, has repeatedly said that “economic policy IS foreign policy.”   Unfortunately, we have not implemented the structural reforms needed to mobilize that sentiment.    

    Even President Obama asked Congress for the authority to consolidate six agencies with trade and investment functions in 2012; this request was not supported by Congress.  

    Bipartisan administrations have independently come to the same conclusion: the current alignment of functions and agencies charged with leading our economic statecraft effort is in need of structural reform.  

    I agree that “economic security is national security”, and the key question we will be asking today is: what structural reforms are necessary to reflect this prioritization?   

    We intend to answer that question in the Committee’s first comprehensive State Authorization legislation in more than 20 years.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) issued a forceful rebuke of Republican efforts to slash the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as part of their proposed reconciliation framework, warning that the cuts would devastate working families, small businesses, and rural communities in New Mexico. The reconciliation bill would cut billions of dollars from SNAP, as well as critical health care programs, in order to give tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy. 

     

    “This committee has historically come together across party lines to support farmers and families. But today, I’m ashamed that we are throwing that legacy aside to gut SNAP, one of the most effective anti-hunger programs in our country,” Vasquez said during his opening remarks. “And I’m not just ashamed—I’m angry. Angry because some members of this committee are taking food off the table from the families I represent in southern New Mexico.”

    Washington, DC – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today released the following statement on the passage of “The One, Big, Beautiful Bill” from the House Ways and Means Committee Markup.

    “Today, the House Ways and Means Committee voted to advance our portion of the One, Big, Beautiful Bill to deliver on President Trump’s America First agenda. This landmark legislation makes several aspects of the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts permanent, including reduced tax rates for individuals and families, the doubled standard deduction, and the doubled child tax credit. Not only did we extend this tax relief for families and prevent a 25% tax hike on taxpayers in NY-24, but we also made permanent the 199A Small Business Deduction that was set to expire at the end of 2025, protecting 40,720 small businesses in NY-24 from being hit with a 43.4% tax rate. While this legislation did not include all of my initiatives, including the New Markets Tax Credit, Technology for Energy Security, BASIC Act, Susan Muffley Act, the High-Quality Charter Schools Act and various other legislative priorities, I understand that individual priorities do not take precedence over ensuring that American families, workers, and businesses do not face the largest tax hike in the history of our country. House Republicans are moving ahead with President Trump’s One, Big, Beautiful Bill, working to solidify the promises we made to the American people by strengthening our economy and providing direct tax relief to families, farmers, and small businesses in rural America,” said Congresswoman Tenney.

    Highlights of this portion of the One, Big, Beautiful Bill include language to:

    • Make the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts permanent, preventing a 25% tax hike on taxpayers in NY-24.
    • Renew and make permanent the 199A small business deduction critical for the success of Main Street.
    • Save the average American family $1,700, the equivalent of 9 weeks of groceries.
    • Establish Savings Accounts for newborns.
    • Increase the university endowment tax.
    • Repeal the 1099-K gig worker reporting threshold, which would require Venmo, PayPal, and gig transactions over $600 to be reported to the IRS.
    • Enhance the Opportunity Zone program to create over $100 billion in new investments in 10 years.
    • Deliver on President Trump’s no tax on tips priority.
    • Create 6 million jobs for American workers.
    • Extend and expand the doubled Death Tax Exemption for 2 million family-owned farms.
    • Modernize and enhance the Low Income Housing Tax Credit, a critical tool to help address our nation’s ongoing housing shortage.

    Washington D.C. – Today, Rep. Barry Moore (AL-01) introduced the Readiness Over Wokeness Act. This legislation will codify President Trump’s Executive Order that reversed a Biden Administration policy of allowing transgender individuals to serve in the military. Cosponsors include Reps. Anna Paulina Luna (FL-13), Harriet Hageman (WY-AL), Warren Davidson (OH-08), Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA-14), and Andrew Clyde (GA-09).

    The Readiness Over Wokeness Act will prohibit anyone who has a current diagnosis or history of symptoms consistent with gender dysphoria, or who has received or is receiving gender affirming care, from serving in the armed forces. Rep. Moore’s bill also directs the Secretary of Defense to conduct a reinvestigation of the eligibility for access to classified information once separation from the Armed Forces occurs.

    “The American people deserve a fighting force that is capable and prepared at any moment to address and deter risks to our nation,” said Rep. Moore. “Serving in the military requires the ability to sustain high mental and physical standards.   • MIL-OSI USA: Congressman Issa Congratulates 2025 Congressional Art Competition Winner from Murrieta

    ESCONDIDO, CA – Today, Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-48) announced that Murrieta Valley High School student Connor Main is the winner of the 2025 Congressional Art Competition for California’s 48th District. Connor’s winning entry is entitled The Dire Wolf.

    “Connor’s piece immediately struck me as uniquely creative and serves as a representation of CA-48’s brightest high school artists. I’m eager for it to be celebrated in our local community and presented in the U.S. Capitol, where it will be on display for the year ahead,” said Rep. Issa.

    Connor is a freshman in high school, and the artwork is constructed solely from charcoal pencils. His parents have expressed their pride in Connor’s work being honored by Congressman Issa in the US Capitol. 

    Connor’s art instructor, Jessica Hoxmeier, stated that the freshman spent countless hours to painstakingly complete every detail of the piece. 

    The runner-up submission was painted by Murrietta Valley High School Junior Hannah Maronde entitled Progress of Patience. Hannah’s work will be displayed in Congressman Issa’s office in Washington, D.C. for guests to enjoy when visiting. 

    Congressman Issa’s office received dozens of creative and inspiring submissions from throughout the region, including watercolors, photographs, drawings, and original paintings.

    Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school student art competition to encourage and recognize artistic talent throughout the country. Students from the 48th Congressional District submit entries for consideration and the winning entry is displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Additionally, the winner is invited to a celebratory reception in Washington, D.C

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ciscomani Hosts Send Off Ceremony for U.S. Service Academy Appointees

    TUCSON, AZ — U.S. Congressman Juan Ciscomani honored more than 20 students from across Arizona’s 6th Congressional District for achieving one of our country’s most prestigious academic honors: an appointment to a United States Service Academy. 

    “You are the best of the best and the brightest of the bright,” Ciscomani told the students Friday at a “send-off” reception he hosted to recognize their achievement. “We celebrate your success and take great comfort in knowing that you are our country’s next generation of military leaders.” 

    Each of the students received an appointment to a service academy from Ciscomani after competing in a rigorous and highly selective nomination process. Each student was interviewed by a members of selection board who then recommended their nomination to the congressman and were invited to apply for admission to a service academy. They then had to be accepted by a service academy. 

    “It’s easier to get into an Ivy League university than it is a service academy,” Ciscomani told the students. 

    Joining the students at the reception were their proud parents, the selection board and members of The Friday Pilots, a local group of retired military pilots who meet for lunch every Friday. 

    “We’re passing the torch from one generation of military leaders to the next,” Ciscomani said. “Our country is a land of liberty because of the bravery and sacrifice of people like The Friday Pilots. It will remain a land of liberty because of students like this.”  

    Each of the students received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition and a challenge coin from Ciscomani, as well as a challenge coin from The Friday Pilots. Additional photos of the event can be viewed here.

    Last night, during National Police Week, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution introduced by Sheriffs Mike Ezell (MS-04) and Troy Nehls (TX-22) recognizing the essential role that local law enforcement officers play in protecting communities, enforcing the law, and maintaining public safety across the United States by a vote of 411-1.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Malliotakis Tax Provisions Included In “One, Big Beautiful Bill”

    Legislation to lower taxes for working Americans, senior citizens and middle class families passed by House Ways & Means Committee today

    (WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis announced that multiple pieces of legislation she authored, co-sponsored or championed are included in the House Ways and Means legislation that will be part of Republicans’ “One, Big, Beautiful Bill.” The bill passed out of the Ways and Means Committee by a vote of 26-19 following an 18-hour marathon meeting that concluded at 8:00 AM this morning.

     

    “Today is a great day for Staten Islanders and Brooklynites who are desperate for tax relief so they can keep more of their hard-earned money. I’m proud to have championed and successfully secured provisions into the tax package that will lower the taxes senior citizens pay on their Social Security income, increase the Standard Deduction and Child Tax Credit, and triple the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction. These provisions will save individuals and families thousands of dollars annually, and with today’s passage out of Committee, we are a step closer to delivering relief.”

     

    Malliotakis also worked to ensure the Alternative Minimum Tax which, prior to 2017, hurt families with middle incomes, did not return, and that the reduced income tax brackets established in 2017 will be made permanent. Additionally, the legislation provides tax incentives for the expansion of domestic factories and manufacturing operations to repatriate our supply chain, create American jobs and protect our national security.

     

    Highlights of the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” include:

     

    Bonus Deduction For Seniors: Would increase the additional bonus deduction for seniors age 65 and over from $1,950 to $5,950 for single filers, and from $3,100 to $11,100 for married couples for individuals with an adjusted gross income (AGI) less than $75,000 and couples with an AGI less than $150,000. This deduction phases down as adjusted gross incomes increases to $175,000 for individuals and $350,000 for married couples.

     

    Increases the SALT Deduction: The SALT deduction will be tripled to $30,000 covering 98% of NY-11.

     

    Prevents the Return of the Alternative Minimum Tax: Successfully stops the return of the Alternative Minimum Tax that crushed middle-income families.

     

    Increases the Standard Deduction: Increases the standard deduction to further lower taxable income for hardworking taxpayers and families to $16,300 for individuals and $32,600 for married couples.

     

    Expands the Child Tax Credit: Builds on the 2017 expansion by increasing the credit by an additional $500 to $2,500.

     

    No Tax on Auto Loan Interest: Makes auto loan interest on American-made car loans fully deductible for American families

     

    Other existing legislation sponsored or cosponsored by Malliotakis included in the bill are:

     

    • H.R. 1801 The Employer Participation in Repayment Act – extends tax-free employer reimbursement for students and college graduates is included in the package. Originally enacted under the March 2020 CARES Act, this provision allows employers to provide up to $5,250 annually tax-free to cover student loan payments, tuition, books, and course-related supplies. It is currently set to expire at the end of 2025, and would be made permanent.

    • H.R. 833 The Educational Choice for Children Act – expands education freedom and opportunity for students, the legislation creates a tax credit for individuals and businesses that make charitable donations to nonprofit organizations offering scholarships. These scholarships help cover K–12 education expenses for qualified students attending public or private schools, including special needs programs.

    Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Jake Auchincloss (MA-04) delivered opening remarks at the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Markup of Budget Reconciliation Text, where Republicans will vote to take away healthcare from millions of Americans.

    “Mr. Chairman, when 13.7 million Americans lose access to healthcare, 13.7 million Americans don’t stop getting sick. What happens instead is, losing access to primary and preventive care, they actually require more healthcare, and they visit the emergency room, and they get care that takes longer and is less comprehensive. 

    And here’s what that means for everyday Americans, middle class and working class, including those who get access to health insurance through their employer. It means that their health insurance premiums are going to go up, because when hospitals provide care to people through the emergency rooms, they have to cross-subsidize that by raising the cost that they charge to commercial payers.

    So it won’t just be the 13.7 million Americans who were kicked off health coverage, who have to pay more out of pocket to get healthcare. It’s going to be all Americans who have health insurance, who will pay more in health insurance premiums. This is after Donald Trump and Republicans promised that they were going to come in and lower prices. Down the road, the middle class and the working class are going to be paying more in taxes and through inflation because of the $7 trillion in debt that Republicans are adding with this tax cut giveaway to the wealthiest Americans, and those Americans who do end up needing Medicaid are now going to find that it cannot meet their needs. 

    My constituent, Ethan Wang, was critically injured while swimming in the ocean when he was studying abroad in March 2019. The spinal cord injury left him paralyzed, needing immediate life-saving surgeries abroad, followed by a medical evacuation back to his home in Massachusetts. Then, inexplicably, Ethan’s dad, Willis, suffered a major stroke just two years later. He also now has disabilities, but continues to work as best he can.

    I’m not sure if he meets the Republicans’ definition of work–but he is working as best as he can. All of this was possible because of Ethan and Willis’ determination and support from the Personal Care Attendant program operated through the Massachusetts Medicaid program known as MassHealth. When these cuts rolled down onto the states, though, the PCA, as well as other flexible programming, will be under threat. 

    The PCA, which allows people with disabilities to stay in their homes so they do not have to stay in expensive institutions, may come onto the chopping block. Ethan and Willis’ family never thought that they would depend on MassHealth, nor did they seek to. Nor do they want, or ask for, a handout. They had an accident. They got sick, and they needed access to healthcare. 

    The Wang family is a dual professional household in Newton with three healthy boys. Nobody knows when they will need to rely on Medicaid. But when they do, they need it to be strong and sound so that it can be a reliable system for families when they need it most. Ethan’s mom says it best: “We all live on the razor’s edge of health, and when you need assistance from the state, you see the world and our social safety net through fresh eyes.” 

    I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to protect Medicaid and the life-saving programs that it supports. I yield back.”

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) applauded the House Agriculture Committee’s portion of the reconciliation bill during opening remarks of the committee’s markup. The bill institutes long-overdue accountability measures for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), expands work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents, and closes loopholes in work requirement waivers. Rep. Mann also praised the investments the bill makes in strengthening the farm economy, expanding the farm safety net, updating reference prices, and investing taxpayer dollars in places they can see a return.

    Rep. Mann’s Opening Remarks as Prepared:

    Thank you, Chairman Thompson, for holding today’s mark up and for your leadership in crafting this legislation that I truly believe will revitalize the farm economy for those who feed, clothe, and fuel the world not just in the Big First District of Kansas but across our country, all while faithfully stewarding taxpayer dollars and creating opportunities for more people to benefit from the dignity of work and achieve the American dream.

    This bill makes crucial investments to support the farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers of the Big First and across rural America. Farmers are struggling, with production costs up over 30 percent and commodity prices down substantially, and they are in desperate need for some degree of relief. We aren’t going to solve all of their problems here today, but we can help provide them some certainty by updating reference prices, expanding access to crop insurance, and increasing investment in export promotion programs. This bill does exactly that, and it will help ensure a safe, reliable, and stable food supply for years to come.

    This legislation also allows us to be forward thinking about the needs of the agricultural community by directing funds to areas with a high return on investment, including by addressing the deferred maintenance backlog at land-grants like Kansas State University for vital ag research and protecting consumers and producers through livestock biosecurity that can fend off growing threats like New World Screwworm. 

    And just as important is the work this legislation does to protect and preserve the SNAP program for those who need it most and ensure that we have a strong safety net for generations to come. We aren’t here today making these reforms to SNAP just because we believe they are more efficient or because they will save us money, we are pursuing these changes because it is wrong to jeopardize the benefits of the single mom taking care of kids too young to be in school or the disabled and elderly in order to subsidize someone who is perfectly capable of making an honest income, but isn’t willing to join the workforce. By definition, these are “able bodied adults without dependents.” These changes will ensure that these individuals are served by the program as it was intended: not as a couch that you can sit on as long as you want, but as a true safety net that gets you back on the ladder of opportunity and back into a job where you can experience the dignity of work and have a shot at the American dream.

    The world doesn’t wait for Congress to act, and global competitors continue to grow stronger every day. Failure is not an option. Agriculture is the backbone of our country, supporting the nation’s food security, trade, and overall economic strength, and today we have in front of us a once in a lifetime opportunity to provide our farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers with certainty, fairness, and the tools they need to keep feeding, clothing, and fueling America. Now is the time for this Committee to step up and deliver for them. Passing this bill is a commitment to rural America and to the future of American agriculture, and I look forward to supporting it today.

    Congressman Brecheen and Congressman Roy Introduce Energy Freedom Act to End Biden’s Trillion-Dollar “Green New Deal” Tax Subsidies with Senator Mike Lee

    Washington, D.C. – Congressman Josh Brecheen and Congressman Chip Roy introduced the Energy Freedom Act. This legislation would repeal the more than 20 green energy tax subsidies created or expanded by the Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Senator Mike Lee is currently leading companion legislation in the Senate.

    Washington, D.C. – Congressman Josh Brecheen and Congressman Chip Roy introduced the Energy Freedom Act. This legislation would repeal the more than 20 green energy tax subsidies created or expanded by the Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Senator Mike Lee is currently leading companion legislation in the Senate.

    “The Democrats’ so-called ‘Inflation Reduction Act’, signed into law in 2022, is nothing more than a massive, taxpayer-funded gift to green energy lobbyists and their leftist billionaire employers,” said Congressman Josh Brecheen. “Families in Oklahoma should not have to subsidize unreliable energy that makes their electricity bills more expensive and inflates other costs. By repealing these costly and reckless green energy subsidies, the Energy Freedom Act also brings us back to an energy policy that puts American workers first, and stops enriching battery and solar industries in China.”

    Background:

    Since its enactment in 2022, the IRA has enacted or expanded the Biden Administration’s green energy tax credits, projected to cost taxpayers between $825 billion (CBO) and over $1 trillion in the next decade (Goldman Sachs), and up to $4.7 trillion by 2050 (CATO). These subsidies entice utilities to overbuild unreliable sources of energy, driving up costs and undermining grid stability.

    The Energy Freedom Act would:

    • Eliminate more than 20 green energy tax credits created or expanded by the IRA for tax years beginning after December 31, 2025.

    • Save American taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade.

    • Repeal the Inflation Reduction Act’s petroleum tax.

    • Protect grid reliability and lower consumer energy costs by creating a level playing field for all energy sources.

    • Close loopholes that allow entities to monetize green energy subsidies.

    What will happen if we don’t repeal these green energy subsidies?

    • Wind and solar will displace natural gas on the electric grid. In 2024 alone, solar represented 61% of all new electricity generation in our nation, with more expected this year according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

    • The stability and independence of our electric grid will be put in jeopardy. By the end of this year, wind generation in the U.S. is expected to increase 11% from 2023 because of these green energy subsidies.

    • American jobs and economic growth will be outsourced to China. As of mid-2023, China produced 97 percent of the world’s solar panel silicon wafers.

    • Estimates project the Inflation Reduction Act will cost between $825 billion—according to the Congressional Budget Office as of January 2025—and over $1 trillion, per analysts at Goldman Sachs, over the next decade.

    Representatives Harriet Hageman (R-WY), Scott Perry (R-PA), Warren Davidson (R-OH), Eli Crane (R-AZ), and Barry Moore (R-AL) are the original cosponsors.
