  • MIL-OSI USA: Kean Highlights Over $1.1 Million Dollars in New FEMA, SAFER and AFG Grants for Local Fire Departments

    (October 29, 2024) BERNARDSVILLE, NJ – Today, Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07) announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded over $1.1 million dollars for local fire departments in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Program. 

    In February of this year, Congressman Kean hosted a FEMA AFG Webinar also wrote letters of support for fire departments to receive a FEMA grant in the 7th Congressional District that requested assistance. Congressman Kean’s Fire Grants and Safety Act was signed into law in July which provided the necessary federal resources through the AFG and SAFER programs. 

    “Every day, firefighters put their lives on the line to protect our communities,” said Congressman Kean. “It is essential that we provide our first responders with the resources they need, and I am grateful to see this funding coming back to the district. Investing in our local fire departments means we are investing in the safety and well-being of our families and neighbors.” 

    “Our agency is incredibly grateful to be chosen for a 2024 Assistance to Firefighters Grant to purchase new portable radios,” said Matthew Hoffman, Chief of Readington Volunteer Fire Company. “Radio communications are a vital part of our everyday operations and safety of our firefighters as they operate on incidents. These funds will help to take the financial burden off our agency and township in the upgrade process. We appreciate the letter of support from Congressman Kean and his office that was submitted with the application.” 

    “Quakertown Fire Company is thrilled to be receiving a $577,000 FEMA SAFER grant for recruitment and retention,” said Bradley Patkochis, Chief of Quakertown Fire Company. “The importance of AFG and SAFER cannot be understated, particularly the ability for local fire companies to complete critical projects without putting it on the backs of New Jersey taxpayers. Thank you to Congressman Kean for supporting FEMA AFG and SAFER programs through the Fire Grants and Safety Act.” 

    $1,171,231 in total going back to New Jersey’s local fire departments, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) and Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG) were distributed as follows:  

    • $60,909 for City of Linden  
    • $44,788 for Tri-County Fire Co No 1 of Stephensburg (Hackettstown)  
    • $53,705 for Alpha Volunteer Fire Co (Phillipsburg)  
    • $189,735 for Readington Volunteer Fire Company 
    • $244,761 for Chester Township  
    • $577,333 for Quakertown Fire Company (Franklin, Hunterdon Co.) 

    Congressman Kean’s Fire Grants and Safety Act authorizes up to $750 million in funding from fiscal years 2024 through 2028, extending the sunset date of these programs to September 30, 2030. Additionally, it increases funding levels for the U.S. Fire Administration to $95 million in order to support initiatives such as the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS).

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Barry Moore introduces legislation to protect Veteran small businesses

    Washington, D.C. — Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02), Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07), and Rep. Jake Ellzey (TX-06) introduced legislation to expand opportunities for Veteran-owned small businesses. This legislation amends the Small Business Act to include surviving children in the definition of small business concern owned and controlled by service-disabled Veterans.

    This would allow the children of deceased service-disabled Veteran small business owners to temporarily run the business for a transition period of no more than three years after the Veteran small business owner passes away.

    “As a Veteran and former small business owner, I know that these businesses are the lifeblood of families and communities,” said Congressman Moore. “This vital legislation allows these family businesses to gracefully transition without losing their service-disabled Veteran owned small business designation and encourages them to hire another service-disabled Veteran in the future.”

This legislation makes an important update to federal law to support small businesses owned by service-disabled Veterans and their families.   • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Barry Moore to AG Garland: “Release the January 6th IG report today”

    Washington, D.C. — Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) joined a letter led by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) warning that AG Merrick Garland will face consequences if the DOJ is found to have interfered with the release of the Investigator General’s report on the DOJ’s involvement in the events of January 6th, 2021. This letter follows testimony by the DOJ’s Inspector General suggesting that the FBI had confidential human sources on the Capitol Grounds that day and that DOJ may be slow-walking the release of his final report on the matter.

    “The American people deserve to see the contents of this report, and Attorney General Garland must be held accountable if he is holding up its release,” said Moore. “The Attorney General can end speculation on this matter immediately by releasing the report today.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Delegation Aims to Protect RI’s Nonprofits and Places of Worship from Violence & Hate Crimes

    After delivering over $2.2 million in federal NSGP funds for RI earlier this year, Congressional delegation announces additional funding available for physical security enhancements to better protect faith-based institutions and nonprofits

    PROVIDENCE, RI – In an effort to improve public safety and help better protect vulnerable faith-based institutions and nonprofits, Rhode Island’s Congressional delegation delivered a significant boost in homeland security funding and is urging local nonprofits andfaith-based institutions to apply for federal funds under the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP).

    Earlier this year, U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Congressmen Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo delivered $2,248,436 in NSGP funds for Rhode Island to protect religious institutions against potential public safety threats.

    The federal funds, which were awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and administered by the Rhode IslandEmergency Management Agency (RIEMA), are targeted to helping synagogues, churches, mosques, and other houses of worship or faith-based organizations enhance their security infrastructure, training, and systems.  The federal NSGP funds can be used for things such as purchasing and installing appropriate locks, video cameras, and bulletproof glass. 

    Overall, the delegation helped include a total of $664 million in NSGP funds in fiscal year 2024, including over $300 million in the National Security Supplemental Appropriations bill, which was approved by Congress after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel. 

    During the first round of NSGP funding, DHS received 7,584 applications nationwide requesting $973 million.  Of those applicants, 3,288 were approved and allocated $454.5 million. 

    Now, members of the delegation are encouraging Rhode Island faith based entities in need of security assistance to apply for the remaining $210 million in funds available that will be distribute in a second cycle. The federal funding is now available through a Notice of Funding Opportunity published by DHS.

    “Whether attending a religious service or dropping your child off at camp, everybody should feel safe when they walk into a church, synagogue, or house of worship.  Unfortunately, we’ve seen a rise in antisemitism and attacks on faith based institutions.  This is a smart investment in helping vulnerable communities effectively protect themselves.  It will help counter the heightened risks we’re seeing, prevent attacks by making security enhancements, and ultimately save lives,” said Senator Reed, a member of the Appropriations Committee.

    “In America, no one should have to live in fear because of who they are or how they worship,” said Senator Whitehouse, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a former Rhode Island Attorney General and U.S. Attorney.  “We continue to secure federal funding to help religious nonprofits and places of worship improve security at their facilities so that Rhode Islanders can have peace of mind while they practice their faith.”

    “There has been an alarming rise in threats of violence against nonprofit organizations and places of worship. At a time when antisemitism and Islamophobia is on the rise, we need to work closely with law enforcement so that every Rhode Islander feels safe no matter where they worship,” said Rep. Seth Magaziner, Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement and Intelligence. “This federal funding will provide at-risk faith-based institutions and non-profits with the resources they need to ensure the safety of their members.“

  • MIL-OSI USA: RI Delegation Delivers Major Funding for Freight Rail Infrastructure Improvements

    PAWTUCKET, RI – Highlighting the importance of well-maintained rail networks, U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Congressmen Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation will award $19,524,497 to upgrade key segments of freight rail tracks owned by Providence & Worcester Railroad (P&W) and New England Central Railroad (NECR).  The overall project is expected to cost about $26 million, with $19.5 million in federal funding and a $6.5 million local match.  Approximately 55.5 percent of the work will be done along P&W tracks in the Ocean State at a total cost of roughly $14.46 million.

    The improvements will replace up to 48,000 feet of older, lighter rail, install 7,900 ties, and rebuild fourteen public grade crossings on the Providence & Worcester Railroad main line in Rhode Island, and reconfigure the tracks and replace nine track turnouts in the Valley Falls, Rhode Island P&W freight yard.  The improved track turnouts will increase spacing and allow for more clearance for hazardous material shipments.

    When it is completed the new track should result in enhanced operational efficiency with fewer delays and faster travel times.

    The federal funding is administered by the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) and made possible through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program, which funds projects that improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of both passenger and freight rail.

    These CRISI program funds are made possible through a combination of annual appropriations and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 (Public Law 117–58), also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

    “I’m pleased to deliver federal funds for these freight rail fixes.  This is a smart investment in helping Rhode Island companies and business sectors get products and materials where they need to go safely, quickly, and efficiently.  Making freight rail safer, more reliable, and more resilient for shippers will help strengthen our supply chains.  It will also benefit local drivers on the road by addressing deficiencies at railroad crossings that contributed to vehicle damage,” said Senator Reed, a member of the Appropriations Committee who helped secure a total of $2.97 billion for the FRA in the fiscal year 2024 appropriations bill and helped set aside $100 million specifically for the competitive CRISI grants. 

    “This federal investment in Rhode Island’s freight rail infrastructure is a win-win for Rhode Island businesses and the public,” said Senator Whitehouse.  “Our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is at work supporting economic growth and keeping supply chains running smoothly and safely.”

    Washington, D.C. – Today, Equality Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Becca Balint (VT-AL)  and Equality Caucus Chair Mark Pocan (WI-02) introduced the Intersex Awareness Day Resolution. The resolution recognizes October 26 as Intersex Awareness Day and affirms the dignity, and the universal human right to bodily autonomy of intersex people. Intersex Awareness Day is recognized on October 26 and marks the first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States at the annual conference of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1996. 

    “This is about basic human dignity. There are 5.6 million intersex Americans who are no less worthy of respect and dignity than anyone else,” said Rep. Balint (VT-AL). “Every kid born with intersex traits deserves to live free of discrimination and exclusion. And it’s critical the LGBTQI+ community work to raise awareness of the stories and needs of intersex people.     Intersex refers to having innate variations in physical traits that differ from typical expectations for male or female bodies regarding the development, appearance, or function of sex-related characteristics. This includes variations in one or more traits such as genitals, gonads and other reproductive organs, hormone production or response, or chromosome patterns, which may present at birth or may occur naturally at a later time.

    The resolution is endorsed by InterACT: Advocates for Intersex Youth and the Congressional Equality Caucus. The resolution is cosponsored by Pocan, Bonamici, Crockett, Davids, Evans, Foushee, Frost, Sylvia Garcia, Grijalva, Jacobs, Barbara Lee, Mullin, Norton, Peters, Ramirez, Sánchez, Ritchie Torres, Takano, Tlaib, and Watson Coleman.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Sorensen Announces More Than $350,000 to Prevent Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Against Children

    PEORIA, IL – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) announced a $359,034 grant to the Young Women’s Christian Association of McLean County (YWCA) to support families impacted by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sex trafficking.   

    “Every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from any form of violence,” saidSorensen. “But when a child does go through such a deeply traumatic experience, we need to step up as a community and make sure that child has our support. This important funding coming to the YWCA of McLean County will ensure that local organizations, that already do so much to help our neighbors, have the resources they need to prevent and respond to crimes against our kids. I look forward to working with local leaders to deliver federal investments in the future that will keep our communities safe.”  

    “Being awarded this grant truly shows our dedication to building a safer community,” said Jennifer Golliday, Director of YWCA Stepping Stones. “With this additional support, we will be able to expand our reach and provide sexual violence prevention lessons to youth throughout McLean County. Our goal is to empower them with the knowledge and resources needed to recognize, prevent, and respond to instances of sexual violence, strengthening the community as a whole.” 

    The $359,034 in grant funding comes from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women’s Grants to Prevent and Respond to Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, Stalking, and Sex Trafficking Against Children and Youth Program. With this funding, YWCA will expand current prevention education services and direct services for children and youth ages 11 to 24 who have been impacted by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and/or sex trafficking.  

    In collaboration with Project Oz, a non-profit in Bloomington, the YWCA will:  

    1. Hire two prevention coordinators to provide sexual violence prevention education lessons and trainings to schools, community organizations, and businesses. 
    1. Partner with Project Oz to offer services to their children and youth clients who are high at-risk youth. 
    1. Provide stipends for after-hour, on call personnel at the hotline and hospital.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Sorensen Announces More Than $630,000 to Prevent Veteran Suicide

    ROCKFORD, IL – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) announced a $634,022 grant to Veterans Path to Hope, an organization that supports veterans across Northern Illinois, including in Stephenson and Winnebago Counties, to support suicide prevention programs for veterans and their families.   

    “Our nation’s veterans, who have sacrificed so much to keep our country safe, need our help,” saidSorensen. “Over 8,000 veterans each year die by suicide. That is simply unacceptable. This funding coming to Veterans Path to Hope, a local organization that already does so much to help our veteran community, will make sure that veterans across Northern Illinois have access to the resources and mental health support they need to survive. One of my most important responsibilities is to take care of those who have served our country in uniform. I will continue to fight for federal investments that make sure our veterans and their families can thrive.” 

    “Veterans may hit unexpected speed bumps at any point after leaving military service, and having support from a team of veterans who have made it through their own challenges can be life-changing,” said Laura Franz, Executive Director of Veterans Path to Hope. “The SSG Fox SPGP team serves alongside VPH programs and community partners who make it their daily mission to help veterans re-establish a sense of hope and purpose. VPH offers a wide variety of services at no charge to veterans and their families, and this grant helps to expand its reach and impact on behalf of the veteran community.” 

    The $634,033 in grant funding comes from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program, which provides resources toward community-based suicide prevention efforts to meet the needs of veterans and their families through outreach, suicide prevention services, and connection to VA and community resources. 

    In Congress, Sorensen has been a strong advocate for veterans across Northern, Central, and Western Illinois by: 

    • Introducing the Autonomy for All Disabled Veterans Act, which will help disabled veterans make accessibility improvements to their homes. 
    • Returning more than $3.2 million to his neighbors through federal casework services, which includes helping veterans access their benefits. 
    • Working with veterans and their families to secure medals for service that they never received from the military. 
    • Hosting mobile office hours and veterans’ roundtables throughout the district to hear from and assist veterans in need of help with federal agencies. 
    • Inviting a local veteran as his guest for the President’s State of the Union Address to Congress in March of 2024.

    ROCK ISLAND, IL – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) announced a $400,000 grant to Augustana College to support efforts to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking on campus.   

    “No student should ever feel unsafe on campus,” saidSorensen. “It is our responsibility to provide our colleges and universities with the tools they need to create a safe environment where our future leaders can learn. This important funding will allow Augustana College to access even more resources to develop peer education and bystander intervention trainings to keep every student safe from domestic violence and sexual assault. I look forward to working with our schools to deliver federal investments in the future that will ensure our campus communities can thrive.”

    The $400,000 in grant funding comes from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women’s Grants to Reduce Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking on Campus Program.  

    The Campus Program helps develop campus-based coordinated responses among campus survivor services, campus law enforcement, health care providers, housing officials, administrators, student leaders, faith-based organizations, student organizations, and disciplinary boards to enhance survivor safety, assistance, and hold offenders accountable.

    DOE Cover-Up of LNG Report

    I led forty-five of my colleagues in sending a letter to Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm raising serious concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability within the agency regarding the Biden-Harris Administration’s handling of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.

    In the letter, we write: “The Biden-Harris Administration’s attempt to conceal its findings on liquefied natural gas impacts is troubling. Despite evidence that U.S. LNG benefits both the economy and global energy security, the Department of Energy has imposed an indefinite ban on LNG exports to non-free trade agreement countries without legal justification.”

    CBP Releases Fiscal Year 2024 Border Apprehensions

    U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released final border encounters for Fiscal Year 2024, ending the year with 3 million illegal alien apprehensions and bringing the numbers under the Biden-Harris Administration up to over 10 million illegal aliens.

    For the past four years, the Biden-Harris Administration has unleashed chaos at American borders by reversing President Trump’s border policies and creating mass-parole programs. Their policies have allowed millions of inadmissible aliens to be released into our communities.

    Federal Judge Orders Virginia to Add Noncitizens to Voter Rolls

    Today, a federal judge ordered the State of Virginia to reinstate 1,600 individuals who identified as noncitizens to their voter rolls. This move is alarming, especially during a presidential election year.

    My legislation preventing illegal aliens and foreign nationals from voting in Washington, D.C., and the Republican-led SAVE Act, which prevents noncitizen voting nationwide, both passed the U.S. House of Representatives. These bills are being held up in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

    This is not a partisan issue. Noncitizens, illegal immigrants, and foreign nationals do not have the right to vote in this country or determine the integrity of our elections. I will continue standing up for free and fair elections to ensure only citizens are voting in the United States of America.

    Meta Suppressing Political Content from Users

    For the past year, I have actively engaged with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, and probed its decision to actively opt users out from viewing political content.

    Social media has become a vital tool for government agencies and Members of Congress to communicate with constituents. Preventing users from viewing political or social content is a grave threat, especially during emergencies or times of need. Read more about the letter in The Hill here or below.

    National Retail Federation ‘Crime Fighter Award’

    I am honored to be recognized as a Retail Crime Fighter by the National Retail Federation for my support of the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act.

    Organized retail crime is out of control across the country, harming small businesses and threatening public safety. As Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence, I have led the charge to address the cause of organized retail crime along with the impact on American businesses. We must continue to aid law enforcement across the country to deter retail crime.

    Female Athletes Lost Nearly 900 Medals to Transgender Athletes

    A U.N. report titled “Violence against women and girls in sports” revealed that female athletes have lost nearly 900 athletic competition medals to transgender athletes.

    As a father to girls in sports, this is unacceptable. I was proud to vote in favor of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which protects female athletes by clarifying that under Title IX, sex shall be recognized solely on a person’s genetics at birth and blocks biological males from competing in school athletic programs for women or girls. It is sad that we must continue to fight for biological men to stay out of women’s sports.

    Biden-Harris Spent $900 Million on Flawed COVID-19 Campaign

    The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce released a report unveiling the failings of a $900 million COVID-19 public relations campaign overseen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This campaign, funded by taxpayer dollars, was used to amplify flawed messaging on the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The Biden-Harris Administration’s guidance on the COVID-19 pandemic led to prolonged closures of small businesses and schools. I am proud of the Committee for uncovering the truth behind the Administration’s use of taxpayer dollars that led to public distrust in our public health institutions. Read the report here or below.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congressman Deluzio Cosponsors Legislation to Rein in Corporate Landlords and Lower Housing Costs

    CARNEGIE, PA – This week, Representatives Chris Deluzio (PA-17) joined as an original co-sponsor of the Stop Wall Street Landlords Act reintroduced by Ro Khanna (CA-17), Katie Porter (CA-47), and Mark Takano (CA-39). This bill would end large institutional investors’ ability to use taxpayer dollars to subsidize the acquisition of single-family residential homes.  

    Since the 2008 housing crash and subsequent foreclosure crisis, increased investor activity in America’s housing market has normalized excessive fees and abusive practices while artificially driving up housing and rent prices. Investors bought 18% of all homes that sold in the fourth quarter of this year and 26% of the most affordable homes. In California, Nevada, Florida, Georgia, and other states where corporate landlords own a large concentration of single-family homes used as rental properties, investors are driving up the cost of rent.  

    “Low- and middle-income families in Western PA and across the country are being pushed out because of predatory practices by large corporate landlords buying up homes in our communities,” said Representative Chris Deluzio (PA-17). “Too many Wall Street investors are not good landlords; they have neglected maintenance, local taxes, and more—all while taking homes off the market. That is why I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Stop Wall Street Landlords Act—to help level the playing field and bring down housing costs in America.”

    Specifically, the Stop Wall Street Landlords Act will:  

    • End large institutional investors’ ability to benefit from tax breaks reserved for homeowners – namely mortgage interest, insurance, and depreciation deductions.  

    • Direct the Federal Housing Financial Agency (FHFA) and related agencies Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae to (a) prohibit large institutional investors from purchasing mortgages on single-family residential (SFR) homes – or any interest in such a mortgage – and (b) from newly lending on a security or securitizing any SFR mortgage under which the mortgagee meets the bill definition of a specified large investor. 

    The bill makes exceptions for mom-and-pop landlords, housing providers that participate in federal affordable housing programs, nonprofits and developers committed to building and supplying affordable single-family homes to owner occupiers in the American housing market.

    WASHINGTON D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and U.S. Representative Val Hoyle announced today $10,215,123 in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds are headed to the Eugene area for two transportation projects. The federal grants awarded will support the deployment of a mobility app for residents and fund airport terminal reconstruction efforts at Eugene Airport (EUG), also known as Mahlon Sweet Field.

    “Oregonians in every corner of our state should be able to get where they need to go safely and efficiently,” U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley said. “The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was a once-in-a-generation investment that is bringing critical federal dollars to our communities for major transportation projects. These latest funds to the Eugene area will bring a first-of-its-kind app for everyone from students to rural Oregonians to connect with regional transportation options, as well as funds for energy efficiency and capacity upgrades at Eugene Airport. I’ll keep fighting for investments like these to better connect cities and towns across Oregon.”

    The two U.S. Department of Transportation awards and project descriptions can be found below:

    $5,215,123 for Lane Transit District (LTD)’s Regional Mobility-Enabling Service Hub (Regional MESH). Regional MESH will create a first-of-its-kind regional mobility management platform integrating diverse transit services for users, including school transportation, into one planning platform, design and deploy on-demand transit in a low-income school district and optimize existing fixed-route rural transit service. Data from trip queries from an associated trip planning app will inform future transit planning and performance management. This funding comes from the Federal Highway Administration’s Advanced Transportation Technologies and Innovative Mobility Deployment (ATTAIN) Program.

    $5,000,000 for Eugene Airport to fund a portion of the Concourse A reconstruction and connector bridge expansion project including restroom and utilities upgrades to increase energy efficiency and capacity. This funding comes from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Terminal Program.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Feenstra Helps Lead Letter Demanding Answers from USDA over Pure Prairie Poultry Fiasco

    HULL, IOWA – Last Friday, U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) helped lead a letter with U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), U.S. Rep. Brad Finstad (R-MN), and U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack demanding answers about the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2022 approval of nearly $46 million in taxpayer dollars for Pure Prairie Poultry and its subsequent bankruptcy in late September.

    “Iowa taxpayers deserve to know the full story behind the Pure Prairie Poultry bankruptcy and how the USDA approved nearly $46 million in taxpayer dollars for a company that left millions of chickens uncared for. This serious lack of oversight is extremely concerning and has caused massive uncertainty for our growers who are already facing a harsh farm economy,” said Rep. Feenstra. “Our letter to USDA will help us get answers for our growers and address the federal government’s carelessness with taxpayer dollars. I commend Secretary Naig for responding quickly and professionally to this crisis.”

    “USDA has provided millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded loans and grants to meat and poultry processors across the country, which is why my colleagues and I are calling on USDA to provide answers,” said Rep. Finstad. “While expanding livestock markets and processing capacity is critical for farm country, the lack of oversight of these dollars by USDA harmed producers and caused a significant disruption to our nation’s food supply chain.”

    “USDA is responsible for keeping tabs on the taxpayer-funded grants it administers, but it clearly dropped the ball with Pure Prairie. Iowans and others across America’s Heartland have lost their jobs and their poultry market as a result of Pure Prairie’s closure. USDA must explain to Congress and the public what went wrong to help prevent a repeat scenario,” said Sen. Grassley.

    Pure Prairie Poultry’s bankruptcy left approximately 1.3 million broiler chickens in Iowa without feed causing Secretary Naig and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to take over care, custody, and control of the birds in Iowa. After several alternative efforts were made to sell the broilers, depopulation of the birds in Iowa concluded last Friday.

The interviews took place at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congresswoman Houchin Cosigns Letter Urging Farm Bill Reauthorization

    Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Erin Houchin (IN–09) has joined a letter to House Leadership supporting the full reauthorization of the Farm Bill by the end of the 118th Congress.

    Farmers are currently operating under policies put in place in 2018. Six years later, these outdated policies restrict the growth of our nation’s agricultural community. Production expenses have increased by roughly 30% since 2018, while 2024 inflation-adjusted net cash farm income projections are the worst in 15 years. Many farmers cannot afford to wait another year for updated provisions to address the challenges they face, especially those growing major row crops.

    In late May, the House Committee on Agriculture introduced the bipartisan Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024, developed with input from farmers, ranchers, and other stakeholders at listening sessions and town hall events across the country. The bill also included input from the entire Republican Conference and included over 2,600 priorities submitted to the committee by members of Congress.

    In their letter supporting the reauthorization of a 5-year Farm Bill, the Members reaffirm their commitment to advancing a bill that meets the needs of production agriculture and rural America. Congresswoman Houchin is dedicated to finding a solution for American farmers.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Malliotakis, Staten Island Elected Officials Commemorate 12th Anniversary of Hurricane Sandy

    Provided update to the community on progress of Staten Island’s East Shore Seawall Project

    (STATEN ISLAND, NY) – Today, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis was joined bipartisan group of Staten Island elected officials, representatives of the U.S. Army Corps, New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP), and New York City Parks to commemorate the 12th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy and deliver progress updates regarding the first phase of Staten Island’s East Shore Seawall project. 

    The $132 million contract for the first phase, which focuses on the SSSI Drainage Area E, is one of several key components of the overall project. This contract includes the construction of large interior drainage ponds (detention basins) connected by an open-channel culvert, along with various stormwater drainage structures, such as box culverts, junction chambers, sluice gates, weir chambers, flap gates, inlets for future stormwater systems and the relocation of existing sanitary sewers.

    The overall Seawall project alignment includes 3,400 feet of earthen levee, 2,100 feet of floodwall, and 22,700 feet of buried seawall between Fort Wadsworth and Oakwood Beach.

    After working closely with the Army Corps, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, NYCDEP, New York City Parks and community groups, the officials put an end to endless redesign requests. Malliotakis also had legislative language included in the Water Resources Development Act of 2022 to establish a 90/10 federal cost share, and collaborated with the National Parks Service and Army Corps to solidify a plan to clean up hazardous waste in Great Kills. The contract for the first phase of the overall project has been finalized, and final preparations are underway for onsite construction.

    “As we commemorate Sandy’s 12th anniversary and remember the 24 Staten Islanders we tragically lost, I stand here with colleagues who represent all levels of government to reassure the community that we continue to make progress in building a more resilient Staten Island and have completed all the necessary steps so the first phase can begin imminently,” said Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis. “We’ve passed legislation so the federal government to cover 90% of the cost share relieving local taxpayers and enabled the Army Corps to expedite the project. Land acquisition is complete, the first contract has been issued and the contractors are on the ground beginning their work. Our main priority continues to be protecting our community and ensuring that lessons learned from Sandy guide our approach to future emergency preparedness.”

As a representative of the New York City Parks Department, we are very grateful that in our borough of parks we recognize the importance of our waterfront, our South Beach boardwalk, and our beachfront properties that will all be and are being included in this project moving forward,” said Staten Island NYC Parks Commissioner Lynda Ricciardone.

    “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t drive by Father Capodanno Blvd and think about how we need to revitalize this area. We need to bring more life to this area and a necessary step is the Seawall Project. I am looking forward to the construction of this project and I think that it will be a game changer.     “There are some kids that weren’t even born when Hurricane Sandy hit. They’re 12 years old now. They’re in middle school. The Army Corps of Engineers have done a beautiful job designing the project in close coordination with NYC DEP and the NYC Parks Department.     The first major effort focuses on building detention basins and stormwater infrastructure, with construction anticipated to start in 2025 and be completed in 3.5 years. Additional contracts include constructing levees, floodwalls, and a 22,700-foot seawall, with timelines between late 2024 and 2026.

    Dear Secretary Vilsack:

    We are writing today with deep concern regarding the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) distribution and oversight of grants and loans intended to help meat and poultry processors start or expand processing capacity.

    On September 20, 2024, Pure Prairie Poultry, a Minnesota-based company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Consequently, the company’s plant in Charles City, Iowa, ceased operations on October 2. In addition to laying off dozens of employees, this resulted in up to 50 farmers and more than 2 million chickens throughout Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin being left without feed or any processing option.

    In 2022, Pure Prairie Poultry was awarded a guaranteed loan of $38.7 million from USDA Rural Development’s Food Supply Chain Guaranteed Loan Program (FSCGLP) and a grant of $6.9 million from USDA Rural Development’s Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP). According to Pure Prairie Poultry’s bankruptcy court filings from the week of September 22, the company reported liabilities between $100 million and $500 million, with $50 million to $100 million in assets. Additionally, the company projected a negative cash flow of $1.8 million per week over the following six weeks. Further, it is our understanding that growers and feed mills affiliated with Pure Prairie Poultry have not been paid for months. Given this fact pattern, we remain deeply concerned about the lack of oversight USDA has provided in this case.

    Over the past two years, USDA has provided $223 million in loan guarantees and grants to 30 meat and poultry processing companies. A press release from the USDA celebrated this funding as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s “commitment to strengthen critical food supply chain infrastructure to create more thriving communities for the American people.” Unfortunately, the investment in this case instead ended in the loss of income, jobs, and poultry across three states.

    While we share USDA’s desired goals of expanding meat processing capacity and markets and building a robust national food supply chain, it is critical that livestock producers and poultry growers have resilient systems to ensure the production of healthy and affordable protein for both domestic and global consumption. Moreover, American taxpayers deserve the peace of mind that their dollars are being spent wisely. Due to the concerns raised by Pure Prairie Poultry’s bankruptcy and the resulting impacts on farmers and poultry flocks, we respectfully request the Department’s response to the following questions by November 8, 2024:

    1. On what date did the USDA receive notice from Pure Prairie Poultry’s lender regarding the company’s default on its loan obligations and its inability to continue providing feed and processing for birds under its ownership? Additionally, please provide the statutory and/or regulatory requirements that obligate the lender to timely notify the Department of a defaulting entity utilizing the Department’s programs and funds.

    2. What metrics did the USDA utilize to approve Pure Prairie Poultry with over $45 million in taxpayer funds? Please provide details on the scoring criteria and metrics used for MPPEP along with information about the USDA’s approval process for the loan guarantee under the FSCGLP and financial institutions’ ability to service the loans.

    3. What, if any, consideration does USDA give to previous bankruptcy filings when awarding loans and/or grants? Was USDA aware of the previous closures that took place at the location of the Charles City, Iowa processing facility?

    4. Did the USDA have any indications at the time of Pure Prairie Poultry’s approval for both the loan guarantee and grant that the company would face financial peril less than 24 months after the awards were announced? What steps did the USDA take to salvage the plant in Charles City, Iowa?

    5. What steps did the USDA take in the immediate aftermath of the plant closure to assist the relevant stakeholders, including growers and state departments of agriculture, in the care, processing, and depopulation of affected birds? What additional steps does the USDA plan to take to assist affected producers?

    6. What are the USDA’s current oversight mechanisms for grants and loan guarantees to ensure taxpayer dollars are not being wasted? Additionally, what oversight actions were taken by USDA in the case of Pure Prairie Poultry?

    7. What steps will the USDA take moving forward to ensure proper guardrails are in place to prevent similar outcomes for both the current recipients of the FSCGLP and MPPEP loans and grants, as well as similar funding opportunities in the future?

    8. Have any additional lenders notified the USDA of potential defaults within the loan portfolio for the FSCGLP? Is the USDA aware of any other potential cases of default based on its own analysis? Have any prior defaults occurred, not including Pure Prairie Poultry?

    9. Does the USDA maintain a preferred lender list for programs under the Rural Development Mission Areas? If so, please provide a copy.

    10. Is the USDA aware of any other projects financed by the lender(s) of Pure Prairie Poultry through the FSCGLP? If so, please provide details on those projects. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

    Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) has introduced the Diabetes Prevention Program Reauthorization Act of 2024, with bipartisan support from Rep. Lou Correa (CA-46). The bill reauthorizes and increases funding for the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a nationwide partnership of public and private organizations focusing on preventing type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes. In the U.S., nearly 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes and the DPP has been shown to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%, and by 71% for those over age 60.

    Yesterday, Congressmen Mike Lawler (R-NY-17) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23) led a bipartisan letter signed by over 100 of their House of Representatives colleagues slamming the push by the Palestinian Authority to downgrade Israel’s status at the United Nations (UN) and offering serious consequences if this were to happen. The letter is endorsed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) Action, Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET), the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA), Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), Christians United for Israel (CUFI), the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), and Heritage Action.

    “Congress has taken note of the numerous UN actions aimed to delegitimize Israel’s right to self-defense, raising serious questions over the future of U.S. funding to the UN,” continued the lawmakers. “We have concluded that the UN is not a neutral party, but one that has definitively taken sides against Israel. We remind you that the U.S. is the largest donor to the UN. Our contributions account for one-third of the body’s collective budget. We will not accept the UN’s ongoing hostility to our ally Israel.”

    “We must stand against nations and international institutions that are trying every day to undermine Israel,” said Congressman Lawler. “This letter lets UN Secretary-General Guterres and the Palestinian Authority know that any action to undermine Israel will have dire consequences. The fact that over a hundred members of Congress from both parties signed onto this letter is a strong testament to our country’s broad, bipartisan support for Israel. I hope that the UN will heed this warning and focus its ire on the true aggressors in the region – Hamas and their Iranian backers.”

    Congressman Lawler has led the charge in the 118th Congress to stand up for Israel and combat the scourge of antisemitism, both domestically and globally. Earlier this year, he and Congressman Moskowitz introduced the Stand With Israel Act. This bipartisan bill will require the withholding of U.S. funding to UN agencies that expel, downgrade, suspend, or otherwise restrict the participation of the State of Israel. Last year, Congressmen Lawler and Gottheimer introduced the IGO Anti-Boycott Act, which will expand existing anti-boycott laws to protects U.S. entities from being coerced into the anti-Israel BDS movement by intergovernmental institutions. That legislation passed the House of Representatives by voice vote in February.

    Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of the 118th Congressand represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.

  • MIL-OSI USA: U.S. Representative Jake Auchincloss, MA Lawmakers Urge DOJ, ATF To Crack Down on Interstate Gun Trafficking As Gun Violence Surges

    Washington, D.C.— U.S. Representatives Jake Auchincloss (D-MA-04), Jim McGovern (D-MA-02), Stephen Lynch (D-MA-08), Bill Keating (D-MA-09), Seth Moulton (D-MA-06), Lori Trahan (D-MA-03), and U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Edward J. Markey (D-MA) sent a letter to the Department of Justice and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) requesting that ATF ramp up its work to mitigate the influx of illegal firearms from other states into Massachusetts.   

    The majority of guns recovered from crimes in Massachusetts are trafficked from other states with weaker gun laws. Straw purchasers, those who buy guns on behalf of people who cannot legally purchase guns, and unlicensed individuals often purchase guns in states with weaker gun laws and transport them via highways that have become popular gun trafficking corridors. This includes the notorious “Iron Pipeline” along Interstate 95. The guns are then resold for profit in states with tighter restrictions on gun purchases, undermining the efficacy of strong gun laws in states like Massachusetts. 

    “While Massachusetts suffers one of the highest rates of interstate gun trafficking, this problem is not unique to the Commonwealth. Nationwide, almost one-third of guns recovered in crimes were trafficked from other states,” wrote the lawmakers.

    The lawmakers made five key recommendations to the ATF: 

    • Strong implementation of a newly finalized rule that will require more sellers to obtain federal licenses and comply with federal safety requirements that help identify potential traffickers. These requirements include conducting background checks, maintaining inventory records, and reporting when customers purchase two or more handguns within five consecutive business days.
    • Improve inspections of high-risk and noncompliant dealers. The ATF should conduct more frequent follow-up inspections of dealers that sell guns to straw purchasers and those that ignore other indications of trafficking. 
    • Expand reporting requirements for multiple sales of rifles, in addition to revolvers and pistols, and require ATF to keep those reports for at least five years, up from the current requirement of two years. 
    • Increase public access to gun trafficking data to allow researchers, journalists, and policymakers to have access to vital data on interstate gun trafficking and the sources of crime guns. 
    • Ensure more consistent crime gun tracing and increase technical assistance to train local law enforcement on how to do so.  

    The lawmakers requested an update on ATF’s efforts to stem the flow of weapons across state lines by November 7, 2024. 

    Congressman Jake Auchincloss is a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, and a national leader for gun violence prevention. Rep. Auchincloss has worked closely with the Biden Administration to ensure that ATF and DOJ are closing loopholes on background checks in existing legislation and cracking down on ghost guns.     Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) issued the following statement after a federal judge temporarily halted Governor Glenn Youngkin’s removal of approximately 1,600 voters from the Virginia voter rolls: 

    “Mere weeks from the presidential election, Governor Glenn Youngkin attempted to purge 1,600 Virginians from the voter rolls without adequate notice or due process. These actions clearly violated federal law, which prohibits the systematic purging of voter rolls within 90 days of an election.  

    “I welcome the U.S. District Judge Patricia Giles’ ruling to temporarily block Governor Youngkin’s order and prevent the disenfranchisement of thousands of Virginia voters. There is no evidence of widespread non-citizen voting in Virginia or in any state in our nation. The evidence clearly showed that Governor Youngkin’s last-minute voter purge illegally disenfranchised eligible voters, just weeks before the election. This included disenfranchising a Virginia citizen, despite the words ‘NEW CITIZEN’ stamped on their application. Governor Youngkin’s decision was clearly haphazard, political and contrary to the National Voter Registration Act.

    “In a government by, of, and for the people, your vote is your power. As the daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter of individuals who lived through Jim Crow and experienced voter discrimination, voting rights are personal to me. That’s why I passed The Voting Rights Act of Virginia in 2021, which has made Virginia a national leader in protecting voting accessx. I will continue my efforts to ensure every American can make their voices heard by passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965.” 

    McClellan is a staunch voting rights advocate who has spent her career fighting to protect Americans’ right to exercise their fundamental right to vote. The first bill she passed in the House of Delegates made it easier to vote absentee in Virginia. In 2021, McClellan passed the Voting Rights Act of Virginia to make Virginia the first state in the South to pass a voting rights act. Now in Congress, McClellan is a member of the Task Force on Strengthening Democracy and an original cosponsor of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Pfluger Leads Effort Demanding Transparency from DOE on LNG Export Ban

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) led a coalition of 45 lawmakers in sending a letter to Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm raising serious concerns about transparency and accountability within the Department of Energy (DOE) regarding the Biden-Harris Administration’s handling of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. Pfluger and his colleagues call for answers regarding studies allegedly conducted by the DOE on the economic and environmental impacts of LNG—findings that, according to recent reports, may have been withheld from the public because they highlighted the positive impacts of U.S. LNG on the global energy landscape.

    Since President Biden announced an indefinite ban on LNG export permits to non-free trade agreement (FTA) countries in January 2024, U.S. natural gas export projects have stalled. This decision has not only delayed critical energy investments but has also led to diminished energy security for America and its allies. A federal court recently blocked the LNG export ban, underscoring the lack of legal and factual basis for such a measure and casting doubt on the administration’s justifications.

    “The DOE’s lack of transparency is deeply troubling and has real-world implications for American energy security and global stability,” said Congressman Pfluger. “The American people and our allies deserve to know why the Biden-Harris Administration imposed an unnecessary ban that is hampering U.S. energy exports and ceding ground to foreign competitors. We are calling on Secretary Granholm and the DOE to answer our questions and produce any analysis or reports that justify this decision. The lawmakers also question the administration’s decision to involve the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in its 2024 review—a move raising concerns about the politicization of LNG export research, as the PNNL traditionally focuses on renewable energy rather than natural gas.

    Background:

    In June 1984, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered a military assault on Sri Darbar Sahib, a sacred place of worship more commonly known as The Golden Temple. During Operation Blue Star, the Indian Army used heavy artillery and tanks to lay siege on The Golden Temple complex, murdering thousands of civilians as an attempt to suppress Sikh religious rights and freedoms. This tragedy is considered by many as the beginning of the Sikh Genocide.

    Following the death of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, the Indian government launched a multi-day campaign of state-sponsored violence and repression against Sikhs that included disappearances, targeted killings, and coordinated mass violence. Political unrest in India throughout 1984 resulted in the loss of thousands of Sikh lives. Today, transnational repression is still a widespread issue impacting the Sikh community.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Kean Fighting to Restore Memorial Pond in Mount Arlington

    (October 25, 2024) BOROUGH OF MOUNT ARLINGTON, NJ – Yesterday, Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07) toured Memorial Pond to gain insight into the critical need for renovations ahead of the FY25 appropriations discussion. Congressman Kean is advocating for $560,000 in the FY25 appropriation process to benefit the Borough of Mount Arlington. The funding will be used for data collection and analysis of the sediment, surveying, engineering, regulatory requirements, and dredging of Memorial Pond. The dredging involves pumping the sediment through a pipeline into geotubes. This funding has passed the House Appropriations Committee.  

    “In our ongoing efforts to both protect and enhance our community’s natural resources, I am advocating for $560,000 in the FY25 appropriations to support vital renovations at Memorial Pond,” said Congressman Kean. “My recent tour and conversations with local stakeholders and leaders reinforced the importance this funding. These resources will be used for data collection, engineering assessments, and the dredging process itself. This project is not just about maintaining a beautiful space; it’s about ensuring the ecological health of our environment for future generations. By investing in Memorial Pond, we are making a commitment to the well-being of the Borough of Mount Arlington and fostering a sustainable community.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Van Orden Sounds Alarm on Half of Wisconsin Federal Prison Inmate Population Being Illegal Aliens

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, Congressman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) participated in a House Judiciary Committee field hearing in Milwaukee on the effects of the current southwest border crisis on Wisconsin residents and communities. 

    During the hearing, Congressman Van Orden questioned the witness panel on the Federal Correctional Institution Oxford holding 650 illegal aliens who committed felonies in the facility, which is over half of the facility’s housing capacity of 1,200. In a meeting with Oxford’s administrators a week prior to the hearing, Rep. Van Orden was informed that the cost to house a single inmate at Oxford is $42,000 per year, leading the facility to spend over $27 million per year on housing the illegal aliens alone in their custody. Federal law requires that illegal aliens who are convicted of felonies while residing in the U.S. must complete their sentence in the U.S. prison system before being deported.

    Rep. Van Orden:

    “The criminal illegal alien that Congressman Tiffany referred to earlier made his way across the border with Venezuelan gang tattoos. Those are not a, “Live to Ride, Ride to Live” tattoo. That’s either: You’re a member of that gang and you have that tattoo, or they will cut it off you while you’re living, so that should have been taken for what it is at the border. This person never should have been allowed in the country, made his way to Minneapolis, arrested for crimes after the Dane County Sheriff had warrants out for strangulation and some other violent crimes, and didn’t bother following up with it because both those places are Sanctuary Cities. 

    “Then he came to a place a half mile away from where four of my grandchildren live and brutally raped a mother and assaulted a daughter over a period of days. This could have been stopped at any point, and solely because the Biden Administration is pushing an incredibly horrible political agenda, this is going to keep happening over and over and over again.

    “Senator Johnson, I found this out last week, and I want to know if you’re tracking. We went to the federal prison in Oxford in my district, and half of the prisoners are illegal aliens. Are you tracking the volume of what’s taking place? This is the second and third order effect of opening up these borders, but when half of an institution is occupied by illegal aliens, that’s something that I’m hoping we’re going to be looking at here under a Trump presidency. Are you tracking this, Sir?”

    Sen. Johnson:

    “I’m not, but it’s not surprising. It’s not just going to be federal prisons; it’s going to be local prisons and they’re going to be bearing the brunt of the cost of this. I think the House Committee said that the cost of dealing with this crisis is about $150 billion per year across all governmental units. That’s a massive cost imposed on us by the Biden-Harris administration, and that gang member never should have been let into this country. The vast majority of people are as sympathetic as I am with people who want to come here for opportunity but don’t qualify for asylum. There is a very tough standard. You have to be persecuted by your government or threatened with persecution. This open border is a setback in establishing a functioning legal immigration that is controlled and brings people in to improve our economy. I’m for a robust legal immigration system, and we need one. We certainly need one here in Wisconsin – certainly in your district with all the farmers. We need workers, we need laborers, and immigrant laborers do a great job. They come here, they work their tail off, but it has to be a legal system. You cannot establish that until you secure the border. So, Biden has set back establishing that legal system…” 

    Rep. Van Orden:

    “At one point, they had 17 to 20 some thousand rotating through Afghan refugees at Fort McCoy, which I represent. We went back and looked at every single Afghan that came here that was eligible for the Special Immigrant Visa, meaning they worked with the United States government during the war. Guess how many of those were qualified for SIV – zero…

    “The last thing we’re looking at is about 250,000 missing children the Biden administration has lost. The Biden administration, under the Harris Border Czar, is solely responsible for losing almost a quarter of a million children in the United States that are most likely being trafficked, knowing full well that they were releasing them into the hands of members of transnational criminal organizations and human sex traffickers.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Steel, Valadao, CA Republicans Call on State Agency to Delay Gas Price Hike

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reps. Michelle Steel (CA-45) and David Valadao (CA-22) led every House Republican from California in calling on the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to postpone a November 8 vote to raise gas price by 47 cents per gallon in 2025 via new carbon fuel standards. The lawmakers also urged the agency to immediately analyze the cost to consumers before imposing massive new costs on California drivers.

    Joining Steel and Valadao in signing the letter are California Reps. Ken Calvert, John Duarte, Vince Fong, Mike Garcia, Darrell Issa, Kevin Kiley, Young Kim, Doug LaMalfa, Tom McClintock, and Jay Obernolte. The more stringent carbon intensity standards have been projected to add a 47 cent per gallon fee on California drivers in 2025. Independent estimates show that CARB’s current policy trajectory could raise gas prices by 85 cents per gallon by 2030.

    “Governor Newsom’s bureaucracy in Sacramento continues to make life unaffordable for Californians without considering input from affected citizens. State agencies should not be enacting new regulations raising our cost of living by dramatically increasing already-high gas prices,” said Rep. Michelle Steel. “CARB must delay their November 8 vote and study the impact their regulations will have on all Californians.”

    “Californians are already paying the highest gas prices in the nation because of our state’s gas tax,” said Congressman Valadao. “It is unacceptable that unelected bureaucrats at CARB are attempting to quietly pass new rules that will raise gas prices even more for Central Valley families. I strongly urge CARB to delay this vote until they provide a full and complete analysis of how their actions will impact gas prices for consumers.”

    The members’ correspondence to CARB Board Chairman Liane Randolph noted in part:

    “CARB’s new and opaque approach comes as Californians continue to weather gas prices $1.50 above national averages, as well as a July hike in the gas excise tax to 59.6 cents per gallon. Allowing these amendments to move forward will result in an added economic burden on Californians when they are already struggling with elevated energy, food, and housing costs.”

    The delegation went on to note that increases in gasoline costs will disproportionately affect working class Californians, who’ve already weathered significant cost of living increases in recent years.

    “It is well established that those with less economic means frequently bear a disproportionate burden when government mandates raise basic costs of living. For this reason, we implore CARB to carefully consider how proposed amendments will affect low-income and disadvantaged populations throughout California. These risks can be mitigated, and we urge you to take prompt administrative action to delay the November 8th hearing as you develop a more robust understanding for proposed amendments’ economic implications.”

    WASHINGTON – Today, Reps. David G. Valadao (CA-22) and Michelle Steel (CA-45) led the entire California Republican Congressional delegation in a letter to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) requesting they delay their upcoming November 8th vote on amendments to the Lower Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) until the public is provided with transparency on how these changes will impact gas prices. In September 2023, CARB reported that these changes could raise prices by 47 cents per gallon in 2025. CARB has since walked back this analysis and refused to provide an updated cost analysis.

    “Californians are already paying the highest gas prices in the nation because of our state’s gas tax,” said Congressman Valadao. “It is unacceptable that unelected bureaucrats at CARB are attempting to quietly pass new rules that will raise gas prices even more for Central Valley families. Unfortunately, there is no doubt that Californians will continue to pay the price,” the lawmakers wrote.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Hinson, Ernst Work to Ensure Rural Access to Safe Contraception

    Washington, DC – Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) and Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) requested information on the availability of birth control options to ensure Iowa families, especially in rural areas, have access to safe and effective contraception.
     
    After data from 2017 revealed just 24 percent of all Community Health Centers (CHCs) in the country provide a comprehensive list of contraception options for patients to review on-site, the lawmakers specifically inquired about options available through Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which serve rural areas. 

    “Ensuring women, regardless of zip code, have access to safe birth control options is vital for women’s health and family planning. Unfortunately, women in rural and underserved areas often have fewer contraception options. I’m working with Senator Ernst to expand access to safe birth control options for adult women who rely on Community Health Centers for care.”– Congresswoman Ashley Hinson
     
    “Families deserve access to safe and effective birth control when they visit their health care provider, regardless of where they live. To ensure rural areas are not overlooked, I’m working to identify the barriers that leave communities with fewer contraception options.     In the letter, lawmakers wrote:
     
    “Increased access to family planning services has proven to reduce the rate of unintended pregnancies, reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, and reduce rates of infertility and maternal mortality. The limited information that is available also indicates that women in rural communities are facing a significant lack of access. With millions of women in the United States living in areas with limited contraceptive access, it’s imperative we understand the deficiencies and why they exist.”
     
    In the letter to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the lawmakers requested: 

    • An itemized inventory of available contraception,
    • Annual family planning counseling appointment requests and rates of return,
    • Expenditures of federal funds to reimburse facilities for contraception methods,
    • Financial resources and contraceptive options offered, and
    • Any additional barriers, including geographic, to those who wish to provide a wider range of contraceptive methods to patients.
