  • MIL-OSI USA: RI Delegation Announces $600,000 to Reduce Forensic DNA Backlog, Deliver Justice to Victims of Crimes Statewide

    Providence, RI – U.S. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed and Representatives Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs has awarded $600,000 in funding to the Rhode Island Department of Health’s Center for Forensic Sciences to reduce the backlog of DNA casework and ensure justice can be served for victims of both violent and non-violent crimes.  With this funding, the state’s crime lab expects to typically process cases within 30 days for violent crimes and 90 days for non-violent crimes.  

    “No victim of a crime should have to wait for justice to be served because of insufficient resources to analyze DNA evidence in a timely fashion,” said Whitehouse, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and former U.S. Attorney and Rhode Island Attorney General.  “This federal funding will help retain qualified forensic scientists, make upgrades to the state’s laboratory, and bring justice and closure to victims throughout Rhode Island.”

    “This federal funding will help the state’s crime lab effectively process DNA samples, solve more cases, and help law enforcement bring perpetrators to justice,” said Senator Reed, a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies.

    “Justice ought to be delivered swiftly to victims of crime and their families, and this federal funding will make this a reality for Rhode Islanders by reducing the backlog of DNA casework and holding perpetrators accountable,” said Congressman Magaziner.

    “As forensic technology advancements help investigators better match DNA found at crime scenes, it’s critically important that we invest in new instruments and training to help secure justice for victims of crime in Rhode Island — no matter how much time has elapsed,” said Congressman Amo. “This federal investment by the Department of Justice will reduce the casework backlog and bolster our state’s capacity to process incoming DNA cases quickly and efficiently.”

    This grant funding,which comes through the Department of Justice’s DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program, will help the Center for Forensic Sciences’ Forensic Biology and DNA Laboratory continue to reduce the backlog of DNA casework.  Funding will also prevent future backlogs with the purchase of new DNA analysis instruments, an upgraded laboratory information management system, and increased education and training opportunities for scientists.  With these investments, the Forensic Biology and DNA Laboratory expects to reduce the DNA casework backlog by at least 125 cases and continue to be able to process incoming cases within an average 90-day time frame for non-violent crimes and a 30-day time frame for violent crimes.

    Raymore, Mo. – Following recent U.S. airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, Congressman Mark Alford (MO-04) emphasized the critical role that the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and the men and women of Whiteman Air Force Base play in securing America’s national defense and deterring global threats.

    This is the first time that the U.S. has used bombers against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. 

    “Whiteman Air Force Base is home to the B-2 stealth bomber, a cornerstone of America’s ability to deter threats and project power worldwide. We’re grateful for the dedicated service members at Whiteman who were vital in carrying out this key strike against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The reckless attacks by these terrorists in the Red Sea against global trade and military personnel cannot continue to go unanswered. The men and women of Whiteman are always ready to answer the call,” said Congressman Alford.

    On Wednesday, the U.S. announced it hit Houthi targets in Yemen with long-range bombers in an effort to discourage further attacks against commercial and military vessels in the Middle East.  The strike included U.S. Air Force and Navy assets, including B-2 Spirit bombers. 

    In recent military operations, the B-2 has proven its unmatched capability to penetrate fortified targets. This success highlights the critical role that Whiteman Air Force Base plays in defending the United States.

    COMO – U.S. Representative Brittany Pettersen (CO-07) recently traveled across the 7th Congressional District of Colorado, including Park County where she visited the historic roundhouse in Como and celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Park County Senior Coalition in Bailey. 

    At her first stop in Park County, Rep. Pettersen visited the historic roundhouse in Como, the longest operating roundhouse in the United States. This historic site holds a significant place in Colorado’s history. Pettersen discussed how her office can be a resource through federal grants and the community project funding process. 

    Following her visit to Como, Pettersen joined the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Park County Senior Coalition in Bailey. For four decades, this organization has provided vital resources to seniors in the Park County community. During her visit, Pettersen met with seniors and highlighted her dedication to ensuring seniors in rural communities have access to the services and resources they need. Specifically, Pettersen introduced the Rural Health Preceptor Tax Fairness Act to incentivize more health care professionals to train and practice medicine in rural communities.

    “Rosendale said he is concerned that the Western Solar Plan violates the Taylor Grazing Act, which regulates grazing on public lands, and will produce intermittent energy in places where it will still need to be transmitted hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of miles before it can be used.

    “It is not a consistent, reliable, affordable source of energy,” the congressman said of solar energy.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Pettersen Highlights Community Investments in Chaffee, Joins Reopening of Historic McGinnis Gym

    SALIDA – U.S. Representative Brittany Pettersen (CO-07) recently stopped by Chaffee County to visit facilities that she championed through state and federal funding, including the historic McGinnis Gymnasium in Buena Vista and Solvista Health’s Regional Assessment Center (RAC) in Salida. 

    At Pettersen’s first stop in Chaffee County, she visited Solvista Health’s RAC in Salida, a substance use disorder recovery center that she helped secure funding for alongside former state Representative Jim Wilson during her time in the Colorado state legislature. As chair of the Interim Study Committee on Opioids and Other Substance Use Disorders, Pettersen helped establish the Building Substance Use Disorder Treatment Capacity in Underserved Communities Grant Program, delivering $700,000 to Solvista Health’s RAC in Salida. In Congress, Pettersen has built upon this work by calling for increased funding and expanded access to mental health and substance treatment programs.

    Following her visit to Salida, Pettersen joined the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the McGinnis Gymnasium in Buena Vista, reopening the facility after refurbishments. Originally built in 1936 through the Public Works Administration as part of the New Deal, this gym holds a unique place in Buena Vista’s history. Pettersen wrote a letter of support to the Environmental Protection Agency for a Brownfields grant that was awarded to the gym. Now, the facility will serve as a safe, indoor recreation space for children and the Chaffee community for generations to come. 

    “Projects like these are a testament to the positive difference that state and federal dollars can make in our communities,” said Pettersen. “I supported funding for these facilities because I know investments like this will elevate the entire Chaffee community. The McGinnis Gym will foster creativity and community engagement in Chaffee for generations to come.”

    Pettersen continued, “It was amazing to tour Solvista Health and see this center come to fruition after years of dedicated work during my time in the legislature with former Rep. Jim Wilson. This facility provides desperately needed care to those who have often been left behind. As the only place in this region to provide detox and withdrawal management services, Solvista has served over a thousand people in the last year and no doubt has saved hundreds of lives.     Today, Congressman Mike Lawler announced legislation he introduced to hold nations accountable for taking American citizens hostage or otherwise wrongfully detaining them. The bill, the State Sponsor of Wrongful or Unlawful Detention Act, will establish a designation of state sponsor of wrongful or unlawful detention. Countries with this designation would be subject to certain sanctions and be prohibited from receiving foreign assistance. This status would be reflected in travel advisories and the State Department will work with airlines to provide warnings for travelers as well.

    “The number of incidents in which American citizens have been taken hostage while traveling abroad is deeply disturbing, and foreign governments that repeatedly engage in this behavior must be held accountable,” said Congressman Lawler. “Congress must do more to protect Americans and deter incidents from happening in the first place. The State Sponsor of Wrongful or Unlawful Detention Act will ensure this is the case and I look forward to working with colleagues in both parties to get this bill passed as swiftly as possible.”

    Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of the 118th Congress and represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties.

This is in addition to the $2,386,00 in federal Community Project Funding for Fiscal Year 2025 Congressman Ryan is fighting to secure for Dutchess County to create a state-of-the-art Analysis and Real Time Crime Intelligence Center and develop a consolidated two-way public safety radio system.

    The Dutchess County DA’s Office secured the $3,023,688 from United States Department of Justice (DOJ) grant programs with the assistance of Congressman Ryan. The funding will be broken down to support the three following programs:

    • $1,000,000 from the DOJ’s Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Program will fund the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office’s collaborative initiative to address, mitigate, and prevent hate crime and increase victim reporting. This project focuses on the education on and prevention of hate crime through community outreach and partnerships, crime analytics and data collection, and targeted resource distribution to improve hate crime reporting. The District Attorney’s Office will create two new positions-   a Hate Crimes Analyst and an Assistant District Attorney – to aid in the education, prevention, and investigation of bias-related crimes, including those committed online.  Wappinger Central School District Superintendent, Dr. Dwight Bonk, said “I am very grateful to District Attorney Parisi and his office for his commitment to provide a safe school environment for all students. As we have zero tolerance for acts of violence, discrimination, and hate speech within our District, this grant will assist and serve as a catalyst to provide much needed programs and supports that foster a culture of respect for one another. I look forward to our continued partnership and collaboration as we all work together as a community to address issues such as these.”
    • $500,000 from the DOJ’s Enhancing Investigation and Prosecution of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking (EIP) Initiative will help expand and improve the Dutchess County DA’s capacity to effectively investigate and/or prosecute domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, and in so doing, support victim safety and autonomy, hold offenders accountable, and promote agency trust within the community. The EIP project by the Office of the Dutchess County District Attorney will partner with Family Services to provide supportive services to survivors. Funding will help in hiring a Senior Assistant District Attorney to prosecute domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking cases.  Leah Feldman, Chief Executive Officer for Family Services “We are proud to partner with the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office, law enforcement, and community leaders on this important initiative. Sexual violence and dating violence are pressing issues in our community, particularly on our college campuses. This funding will not only contribute to enhancing the investigation and prosecution of these crimes but also provide important trauma-informed education that empowers survivors and dispels harmful myths. Together, we are committed to ensuring justice for survivors and creating a safer, more supportive Dutchess County.”
    • $1,523,688 to bolster the capacity of DNA testing of evidence. This will allow for post-conviction evidence testing as well, ensuring that the perpetrator of a crime is correctly brought to justice. The funding will expand Dutchess County’s Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) by creating positions of Unit Chief, Assistant District Attorney and a full-time Investigator. The funding will help the CIU efficiently conduct thorough case reviews and investigations of violent felony convictions where a credible claim of actual innocence has been made; utilize DNA testing and analysis to provide conclusive evidence of innocence; and insights gleaned from CIU investigations will be applied to active prosecutions to help mitigate the risk of future wrongful convictions. This will ensure justice is finally and correctly served for the people of Dutchess County communities.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congressman Langworthy Announces $2 Million in Federal Funding for Workforce Development Programs at Alfred State

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) announced that Alfred State is receiving a federal grant of $1,998,370 for training programs to bolster the workforce for the heavy equipment and trucking industries. 

    “Businesses in the Southern Tier face a shortage of skilled workers, and this program can create new opportunities for local students and workers to gain the skills necessary to meet the growing demands of these industries,” said Congressman Langworthy. “This investment will ensure that our region has a steady pipeline of talent for the heavy equipment and trucking sectors, paving the way for new economic growth. I will always be a voice in Washington for workforce development and I’m proud to support schools like Alfred State, who do great work in preparing students for successful careers.”

    This funding comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and will allow 180 students will enroll in Alfred State’s heavy equipment operation or trucking and diesel Associate of Occupational Studies program. It will also provide for hands-on learning experiences for 338 middle and high school students, and allow 300 workers will enroll in a heavy equipment operation or trucking and diesel micro-credential program.

    The Appalachian Regional Commission is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments focusing on 423 counties across the Appalachian region. Its mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in the Appalachian region.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) announced that the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency (CCIDA) will receive a federal grant of $1,999,999 for the Ripley Interstate Shovel Ready Site (RISRS) project. The project is expected to generate $60 million in private investment and create 320 new jobs in the region.

    “The Ripley Shovel Ready Site will bring good-paying jobs, attract new businesses, and provide the economic boost Chautauqua County needs,” said Congressman Nick Langworthy. “This significant investment will drive this project forward and give the community new opportunities for economic growth. As someone who grew up in the Southern Tier, I will always make it a priority to bring our federal tax dollars home for meaningful efforts like this one.”

    The RISRS project will install critical infrastructure, including access roads, water, sewer, gas, and communication lines, transforming the 147-acre site into a shovel-ready location for future businesses. These improvements will help meet the growing demand for development-ready space from the manufacturing, transportation, and warehousing sectors, and will play a vital role in revitalizing the region’s economy.

    Funding for this project is provided through the Appalachian Regional Commission’s (ARC) Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) Initiative, which directs federal resources to economic diversification projects in Appalachian communities affected by job losses in coal mining, coal power plant operations, and coal-related supply chain industries.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Lawler Announces Over $32 Million in Federal Funding in FY25, Set to Deliver More Than $70 Million For District in First Term

    Yesterday, Congressman Mike Lawler was joined by Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco and other local elected officials outside the Rockland County Sheriff’s office to highlight major infrastructure and public safety investments for the Hudson Valley secured in federal community project funding for Fiscal Year 2025. Although the appropriations work for Fiscal Year 2025 is still ongoing, Congressman Lawler has already secured more than $32.9 million for fifteen different projects across New York’s 17th Congressional District. This is in addition to $38 million in federal funding for 17 projects in Fiscal Year 2024. With the latest numbers, Congressman Lawler is set to deliver more than $70 million for New York’s 17th Congressional District in his first term in office.

    “When I was elected to represent this district, I promised I would work with my partners at every level of government and in both parties to prioritize the needs of our residents,” said Congressman Lawler. “That’s exactly what I’ve done in working with each of the officials with me here today to ensure funding for each of these important projects.”

    “Projects like these are great examples of what we can accomplish when we put aside politics and focus on meeting the needs of our communities and constituents,” Congressman Lawler concluded. “That’s been my focus as a Congressman, it’s been my focus throughout the appropriations process for both Fiscal Year 2024 and 2025, and it will always be my focus.”

    Rockland County Public Safety and Crime Prevention Initiative

    Recipient: Rockland County Sheriff’s Office

    Amount: $4,500,000

    Summary: The funding will be used for necessary law enforcement priorities such as police vehicles, equipment to be utilized at a new reality-based public safety training facility, and the structural analysis and design of the facility. This project will provide necessary support to the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office to ensure effective enforcement of laws, address crimes, and improve the criminal justice system across the County. These priorities closely align with the purposes of the Byrne Justice Grants program.

    Law Enforcement Reality-Based Training Facility

    Recipient: Rockland County Sheriff’s Office

    Amount: $2,600,000

    Summary: The funding will be used to construct a new reality-based training facility for the Rockland County Sheriff Department to grow law enforcement capacity, ensure effective law enforcement operations, and overall enhance public safety throughout the county. This project will increase law enforcement capacity and enhance development of public safety in Rockland County, NY. This new facility will allow the Sheriff’s office to better combat crime, improve community safety, and foster an environment more conducive to economic development.

    Westchester Pleasantville Water District Storage Tank Replacement/Rehabilitation

    Amount: $2,250,000

    Summary: The funding will be used to mitigate risks attached to their leaking North and South Water Storage Tanks. Both 1-million-gallon water storage tanks are housed within the Millwood Water Treatment Plant approximately 3 miles north of the Village and services the entire Pleasantville Water District and approximately 2,000 residents in the Town of Mount Pleasant. Over the course of their 90-year history, both storage tanks have been exposed to natural deterioration, which has led to their useful life cycles coming to an end. Funding for the proposed Water Tank Improvement project will replace both of the Village’s North and South water tanks, which will significantly reduce the tax burden placed on residents. The completion of this project will positively impact the Pleasantville water distribution system, which services all 7,513 residents (U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 Decennial Census) and an additional 2,000+ residents living in the Town of Mount Pleasant. Without funding, Pleasantville’s North and South Water Tanks would continue to suffer from leakage which will compromise the Village’s water supply, further increasing distribution risks that will negatively affect residential quality of life.

    Nanuet TOD Project

    Recipient: Town of Clarkstown

    Amount: $5,000,000

    Summary: The funding will be used for construction of the first phase of its transformative vision for the Nanuet Transit Oriented Development Plan (TOD), including water and sewer infrastructure improvements, road, sidewalk, and pedestrian safety and streetscape enhancements. Bringing this extensive new infrastructure will spark the redevelopment of the area by mitigating the drainage issues plaguing development in the area, enhancing the appeal of the area, and creating the necessary connectivity for a walkable and easily accessible TOD neighborhood. This transformational project will lead to an expansion of workforce housing, parking, and economic opportunity for the community.

    Safer Ramapo Project

    Recipient: Town of Ramapo

    Amount: $5,000,000

    Summary: The funding will be used for installation of pedestrian safety measures, including traffic signals, turning lanes, walking paths, and sidewalks in the Town of Ramapo. Directing funding towards pedestrian safety measures will not only mitigate the risk of accidents but also cultivate a more pedestrian-friendly environment. This will improve accessibility and safety, improve connectedness, and improve ADA compliance. The Town of Ramapo is also home to one of the largest Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish populations in the country, with many of these individuals walking to shul on Saturdays. To ensure the safety of these individuals, the Town of Ramapo requires additional funding for the construction of sidewalks. From 2011-2022, there have been 983 pedestrian injuries, and twenty-seven (27) deaths in the Town of Ramapo. Safer walking conditions continue to be an urgent need for Ramapo residents. 

    Carmel Water District II Water Plant Upgrade and Rehabilitation Project

    Recipient: Town of Carmel

    Amount: $1,250,000

    Summary: The funding will be used to repair/replace a 60-year-old facility and associated equipment to meet federal and state requirements of PFOAs. This project will directly benefit approximately 10,000 individuals on a daily basis. Beyond safeguarding public health, it will also have far reaching positive effects on various institutions and businesses in downtown Carmel, including the Putnam Hospital, and Carmel High School.

    Hallocks Mill Sewer District Extension Project

    Recipient: Town of Yorktown

    Amount: $1,250,000

    Summary: The funding will provide public sewer service to neighborhoods presently serviced by residential septic systems. The properties served by septic systems have generally been installed on small lots with steep slopes and environmental constraints, which are not ideal for septic system performance. The extended district will dramatically improve and enhance the water quality of Sparkle Lake, a major recreational resource for town residents, as well as the Croton Reservoir, which provides drinking water for millions of residents in the metropolitan area. The proposed wastewater infrastructure project, however, protects one of the largest public water systems in the United States. 

    Croton Falls Sewer Project

    Recipient: Town of North Salem

    Amount: $1,250,000

    Summary:  The project will install sewers in the Village of Croton Falls’ General Business district to replace existing septic and cesspools. The Village is struggling because some of its businesses, especially all of the restaurants which have mixed use with residential apartments over them, are on older septic tanks that cannot be upgraded due to a lack of space. Due to its proximity to the Muscoot Reservoir, many of the existing tanks and fields are on New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) property and under roads, some are not fixable if they were to fail. To allow the Village to take advantage of its assets and begin to realize the potential of the community, Croton Falls needs sewers, which this funding will provide.

    Town of Orangetown Sidewalk Improvement Project

    Recipient: Town of Orangetown

    Amount: $1,500,000

    Summary: The funding would be used for streetscaping improvements in the Hamlet of Pearl River in the Town of Orangetown specifically to install sidewalks, curbs, and drainage improvements. This project provides streetscape improvements that meet a compelling local need consistent with the statutory purposes of the Economic Development Initiative. The corridor receiving these improvements has seen three fatalities in the last 15 years and is part of Orangetown’s continued efforts to improve pedestrian safety on Middletown Road. Sidewalks are a critical element of community well-being and serve as a connector between residents, neighborhoods, local economies, and more. Walkable sidewalks will ensure Orangetown is a place that attracts both businesses and new residents, which will surely promote economic development in the community.

    Village of New Square Road Infrastructure Improvements Project

    Recipient: Village of New Square

    Requested Amount: $4,000,000

    Summary: The funding will complete much needed improvements for NYS Route 45, widen Village roads, and complete paving improvements. The project will enhance traffic flow and increase the safety of motorists and pedestrians by addressing long-standing concerns about road conditions and motorist/pedestrian safety in the Village of New Square. Portions of the project area lack adequate sidewalks as a buffer from narrow, congested roads and are inherently dangerous in a fast-growing Village where many pedestrians utilize Village streets to travel to school, shopping, and visits to friends and family. By rectifying roadway deficiencies, the Village will relieve congestion, reduce travel time, and increase vehicle operating benefits.

    Memorial Drive Reconstruction Project

    Recipient: Village of Suffern

    Amount: $1,000,000

    Summary: The funding will be used for the reconstruction of Memorial Drive. The project will reopen a critical thoroughfare for emergency vehicles and for their timely response which can save lives, prevent injuries and protect property. Memorial Drive, which is currently closed due to the continual road deterioration and for the safety of residents, is also a major connection between the local community and US Route 202. Its reconstruction will stabilize the road for the safe use by all traffic including emergency vehicles.

    Downtown Water Main Lining Project

    Recipient: Village of Sleepy Hollow

    Amount: $983,200

    Summary: The funding will support a multi-phase project to address hydraulic inefficiencies in the downtown area, the Village of Sleepy Hollow will reline and replace approximately 1,980 linear feet of existing 8” water main line along a portion of Cortlandt Street and College Avenue. The current downtown water system is over 100 years old. The inner village neighborhoods bordering the downtown area represent the Village’s largest number of public housing units, low-income housing, low-income senior housing, and middle-income housing. This corridor is a critical aspect of public health and safety, connectivity and multi-modal transportation, affordable housing, resilient infrastructure, and overall economic investment. As a result, this project will provide immediate remediation and resiliency to infrastructure that otherwise poses a water quality and economic risk to the community, particularly its most vulnerable residents. 

    Samsondale Avenue Curbs & Sidewalk Replacement Project

    Recipient: Village of West Haverstraw

    Amount: $800,000

    Summary: The funding will be used to construct necessary upgrades of sidewalks and curbing along Samsondale Avenue, which have rapidly deteriorated and become a hazard. The project will unlock critical improvements to a main thoroughfare for a Village operating on a limited budget. Many pedestrians utilize Samsondale Avenue to get to the business district along Railroad Avenue and Route 9W as well as access to and from the Village of Haverstraw. The lack of sidewalks is potentially hazardous to people walking on them. This project will improve accessibility and safety, improve connectedness, and improve ADA compliance.

    Westchester County Public Safety Enhancements

    Recipient: City of Peekskill

    Amount: $520,000

    Summary: The funding will be used for expanding and modernizing the Peekskill police station, which is currently at capacity. The City of Peekskill’s police station is currently at capacity and urgently requires more space. With this necessary facility expansion and modernization, the City will be able to hire 10 more law enforcement officers, which will significantly improve operations.

    North State Road Water Main Replacement Initiative

    Recipient: Town of Ossining

    Amount: $1,000,000

    Summary: The funding will upgrade the community’s water distribution system on North State Road, an area that has a history of water main breaks, including 14 incidents over the last 5 years, that has exposed the general public to health risks and requires expensive repairs. It will improve the Town’s water distribution system as a part of a larger initiative to replace all aged cast iron water mains, significantly reducing the likelihood of water main breaks in a historically problematic area and positively impacting all 37,764 users in the service area.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Sorensen Joins South Pekin Leaders to Announce Funding Request for Clean Drinking Water

    PEORIA, IL – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) joined local leaders in South Pekin to provide updates on funding he requested from the federal government to fix the village’s water system and provide clean drinking water to families. 

    “In South Pekin, we are seeing what happens when our communities don’t have the resources to repair broken infrastructure,” said Sorensen. “The water mains need to be replaced, and we need to make sure South Pekin has a new manganese filter, so dangerous chemicals stay out of the water and out of glasses that my neighbors use to drink. That is why I have requested millions from Congress for South Pekin to replace its water mains and ensure everyone has access to safe drinking water. I will continue working across the aisle, with Republicans and Democrats to get this passed so we can deliver this funding to my neighbors here at home.”

    Sorensen’s request comes as the Village of South Pekin looks to overhaul its water system that has been found to have levels of manganese levels that exceed the allowable limit, according to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. 

    Sorensen requested federal funds for South Pekin as part of the Community Project Funding process, which allows members of Congress to secure funds in spending legislation for critical initiatives in their communities. 

    In the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies House Appropriations bill, Sorensen fought to include $1,105,800 in investments for South Pekin. This legislation has passed the House and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. 

    Congressman Eric Sorensen serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Prior to serving in Congress, Sorensen was a local meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities for nearly 20 years. His district includes Illinois’ Quad Cities, Rockford, Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal.

    Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) recently introduced the Water Delivery Transparency Act to address South Texas’ water challenges by ensuring agricultural producers and local stakeholders have a voice in negotiations under the 1944 Water Treaty with Mexico. As Mexico continues to fall short on water deliveries, the bill mandates the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) to host public forums, create an online portal for stakeholder input, and issue public reports detailing how this input will influence future treaty updates.

    “South Texas’s farmers and communities have been carrying the weight of these water shortages for too long,” said De La Cruz. “It’s time for a new approach that prioritizes transparency, stakeholder engagement, and accountability from our neighbors to the south. The Water Delivery Transparency Act will give our agricultural community and local leaders a real voice in the process, ensuring that their concerns are heard and that the IBWC is held accountable to the needs of our region.”

    The bill is co-sponsored by House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (TX-19) and Congresswoman Kay Granger (TX-12).

    Support from the Agriculture Community

    The Water Delivery Transparency Act has garnered strong support from key agricultural groups in Texas, including the Texas Farm Bureau, the Texas International Produce Association, the Texas Vegetable Association, and Texas Citrus Mutual.

    “Having a process to record stakeholder comments and suggestions has become necessary as the Rio Grande Valley approaches a critical state in this water shortage.   • MIL-OSI USA: $220.98 Million in Federal Funding Now Set for Washington Bridge Replacement

    Building on previous Mega award, new $95.5 million INFRA grant is second significant pledge of federal aid totaling $220.98 million

    Providence, RI – The effort to replace the westbound Washington Bridge got a major boost today as U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Representatives Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo today joined with Governor Dan McKee in announcing a $95,589,533 INFRA (Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects program) grant for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT).

    Together, with a previous $125.39 million Mega grant(also known as the National Infrastructure Project Assistance program) that the state was awarded in September, Rhode Island has now received $220.98 million in federal funding to replace the Washington Bridge, fully funding the state’s request for the project.

    The new federal funds are being made available thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law), which Reed and Whitehouse supported and was signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021, delivering a 50 percent increase in the amount of available funding for INFRA grants, as well as resources for improving Rhode Island’s roads, bridges, public transportation, and water infrastructure.

    The Washington Bridge, which spans the Seekonk River connecting East Providence to Providence and has a daily traffic volume of 90,000 vehicles, was shut down on December 11, 2023 after RIDOT discovered broken anchor rods that put the bridge at risk of failure.

    “Securing this federal investment has been a top priority.  Now the state must utilize this $220.98 million in federal funding to accelerate progress toward a new bridge that meets capacity and safety needs now and in the future,” said Reed, a leading member of the Appropriations Committee.  “Passing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law paved the way for this funding.  I commend the Biden-Harris administration for its leadership, support, and commitment to a modern and resilient infrastructure system.  The state must put this money to work and keep the public updated with a clear timetable for progress.”

    “This INFRA Program infusion for the Washington Bridge fills in a major missing piece of the funding puzzle to ensure the state can get the job done right,” said Whitehouse, who helped author the INFRA program as a senior member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.  “I am very proud that the INFRA Program is yet again delivering for Rhode Island’s infrastructure.  We will continue to work as a delegation to secure whatever the state needs from the federal government to fix this situation for drivers.”

    “Securing a second major federal grant marks another important milestone in our work to build a brand new Washington Bridge,” said McKee. “We know that ensuring this complex project is done right will take time, but it’s encouraging to see demolition resuming this week, the rebuild bidding process moving forward, and additional federal dollars coming in. We thank the Biden-Harris Administration for their commitment to Rhode Island and our top-notch congressional delegation for helping us secure this crucial funding.”

    Overall, the state requested $220.9 million in federal funds to help replace the Washington Bridge and was initially awarded $125.39 million out of the total pool of about $1 billion of federal funds available for Mega grants of this size and scope nationwide.

    Demolition of the bridge has already begun.  In May of 2024, RIDOT estimated the price tag for replacing the bridge would include $58.2 million for demolition as well as $368.3 million for the design-build process.

    Separate from the demolition and rebuild costs for the Washington Bridge, the state also estimated costs of approximately $46 million for emergency expenses, including work to stabilize the old bridge and estimated funding to account for both state and municipal safety and transportation-related expenses.

    Rhode Island previously received a $60.3 million INFRA grant in 2019 to rebuild the Northbound Providence Viaduct; a $65 million INFRA grant in 2020 to overhaul Route 146; an $82.5 million INFRA grant in 2022 to upgrade the Pell Bridge; and an $81 million INFRA grant earlier this year to create a ‘missing move’ between I-95 and Quonset Business Park.

    Rhode Island has now received two Mega awards to fund the Washington Bridge, totaling $125.39 million, as well as this new INFRA award.

    These grants come on top of a $251 million federal Bridge Investment Grant the delegation secured earlier this year to repair 15 bridges along the I-95 corridor in Providence and Cranston. 

    Additionally, Rhode Island will also receive a total of $255 million in bridge formula funds over the life of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

    With about 50,000 U.S. bridges with very significant issues awaiting attention, an estimated 40 percent of them can be rehabilitated, but at least 35 percent will require a complete replacement due to their condition, according to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). 

    This level of federal funding for Rhode Island infrastructure improvements stands in stark contrast to the previous administration.  While Donald Trump routinely declared “Infrastructure Week,” his administration had little to show for it, whereas President Joe Biden oversaw passage of the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which has delivered hundreds of millions of dollars for bridge improvements across the Ocean State and continues to invest billions annually in America’s transportation network, communities, and workers.

    WASHINGTON, DC (October 16, 2024) – Recently, Congressman Morgan McGarvey alongside Congressman Gus Bilirakis (FL- 12) introduced H.R.9046, the Board of Veterans’ Appeals Attorney Retention and Backlog Reduction Act, which would allow the Board of Veterans’ Appeals (BVA) to increase the salary of its top attorneys to better recruit and retain experts in veterans law. 

    “Veterans in Louisville and across the US deserve a speedy and efficient VA – especially when appealing a denied claim,” said Rep. Morgan McGarvey. “These decisions don’t come out of thin air, they require staffing by expert attorneys in veterans law which takes years to master. Whether in the public or private sector, the same principle applies: you can’t retain top talent by denying your employees competitive compensation. I’m proud to champion this bipartisan legislation to empower BVA with the tools needed to address the claims backlog, retain talented attorneys, and ensure our veterans get the benefits they’ve earned.”

    “AFGE and the National Veterans Affairs Council commend Representative Morgan McGarvey and Representative Gus Bilirakis for leading H.R. 9046, the ‘Board of Veterans’ Appeals Attorney Retention and Backlog Reduction Act,’” said Douglas Massey, President of AFGE Local 17 which represents Board of Veterans’ Appeals attorneys.  “This critical legislation will both raise the career ladder of the dedicated board attorneys who diligently process veterans’ appeals and will improve the recruitment and retention of experienced attorneys at the Board, which will greatly reduce the backlog of Veterans’ appeals.”

    The Board of Veterans Appeals (BVA) adjudicates appeals on veteran benefits, such as disability compensation and pension benefits. Though progress has been made, BVA is currently mired in a 200,000-case backlog with many citing staff turnover – due to lower relative compensation and lack of support by management – as the cause. In the May 2024 Partnership for Public Service “Best Places to Work in Federal Government” rankings, BVA ranked 444th out of 459. 

    The Board of Veterans’ Appeals Attorney Retention and Backlog Reduction Act would allow BVA attorneys in non-supervisory roles to reach a GS-15 level on the federal pay scale, which represents about a $10,000 difference in salary from the current BVA cap of GS-14. Other entities within VA, such as the Office of General Counsel (OGC), allow non-supervisory attorneys to reach GS-15, often leading to attorneys “jumping” to OGC for higher pay. The legislation does not mandate new hiring or promotion of attorneys; it grants BVA the flexibility and tools to increase pay within its existing appropriations, just as in other entities at VA.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Scholten Announces $1.2 Million Grant to Combat Human Trafficking in West Michigan

    GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (MI-03) visited Safe Haven Ministries in Grand Rapids to congratulate the dedicated staff on their recently awarded grant. The $1.2 million investment will be split to fund a joint task force between Safe Haven and the Kent County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO). The grant comes from the Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime and is known as an Enhanced Collaborative Model (ECM) Task Force to Combat Human Trafficking Grant. Together, Safe Haven and KCSO will collaborate to combat human trafficking – a local issue that has national implications. Rep. Scholten authored a letter of support to the Department of Justice to bolster Safe Haven’s application.

    “Before serving West Michigan as your representative, I served our community as a social worker and an immigration attorney,”  said Scholten. “Throughout my career, I have helped people – particularly the most vulnerable – who were being trafficked and abused. Make no mistake, human trafficking does not always look like it does in the movies. It is happening right in front of us. We need victim advocates and resources to fight this crisis and break the cycles of violence and abuse. Safe Haven is equipped with the personnel and space to compassionately and effectively serve our most vulnerable neighbors, and with this grant and partnership with KCSO, they will be able to empower survivors.”

    The U.S. Department of Education allocated $9.4 million from the Disability Innovation Fund Program to develop a tool that connects students with accessible services, including vocational rehabilitation and long-term support. The tool represents a pioneering data-sharing system that will enable school and state agency personnel—including the Maryland State Department of Education Division of Rehabilitative Services and the Developmental Disabilities Administration at the Maryland Department of Health—to share information about student applications, eligibility, and services. 

    The Maryland Department of Disabilities also received $4.5 million from the Social Security Administration’s Interventional Cooperative Agreement Program. The funding will be used to assess the impact of outreach and assistance for children with disabilities who qualify for both Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income, in an effort to enhance access to transition services and improve employment outcomes through competitive, integrated employment.  

    The two grants begin this month and will continue over five years. 

    “Both grants underscore our unwavering commitment to advancing opportunity, access and choice for individuals with disabilities,” said Maryland Department of Disabilities Secretary Carol A. Beatty. “Allowing them to live a life of their own choosing in their communities.  Everyone can work with the right support and services and jobs are a critical element of independence.”

    Governor Moore issued a proclamation in support of October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, highlighting that people with disabilities are more than twice as likely to be unemployed than their non-disabled peers. By removing barriers to employment, Maryland is putting young people with disabilities on the road to financial independence.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Kamlager-Dove Secures $1 Million to Fund Construction of SoLa Impact’s New Tech & Entertainment Center in Crenshaw and Leimert Park

    LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) announced that she secured a $1 million grant for SoLa Impact’s affiliated nonprofit, the SoLa Foundation, in support of the completion of SoLa’s second state-of-the-art youth center. The SoLa Foundation is one of fifteen organizations that Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove secured a total of $12.4 million for through Fiscal Year 2024 government funding legislation.

    Opening in the first half of 2025, the 10,000 sq ft Art, Tech and Entertainment Center will be located on the ground floor of “Crenshaw Lofts,” SoLa Impact’s 195-unit workforce and affordable housing development in the LAX-Crenshaw Corridor. The center will train and mentor young people to become the next generation of professionals and entrepreneurs in arts, media, entertainment, emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, and the live events industry. The facility will feature a collaborative workspace, professional recording studio, and indoor/outdoor event space.     The funds are part of Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove’s commitments to the continued revitalization of the Crenshaw and Leimert Park communities as well as increasing access to career training and jobs in entertainment.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reps. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) introduced H.R. 9545, the Visa Processing Improvement and Paperwork Reduction Act.

    Currently, our visa application and processing systems are outdated, duplicative, and waste crucial resources. This legislation will save the State Department countless hours of labor and thousands of dollars in postage and paper by keeping federal communications about visa applications online. It will also reduce requirements on families to mail physical copies of documents that have already been submitted online.

    “We have an opportunity to both improve government efficiency and reduce the burden on individuals navigating our complex immigration system,” said Rep. Salazar. “The Visa Processing Improvement and Paperwork Reduction Act will save the State Department tons of time and money so they can process visa applications quicker and easier.”

    The Visa Processing Improvement and Paperwork Reduction Act streamlines the visa processing system by eliminating the requirement to mail all signed communications from the applicant and from the Agency that are already sent electronically.

Kamlager-Dove. “Digitizing more aspects of the visa application process will eliminate redundant paperwork, speeding up visa processing times and reducing burdens on applicants.   • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Fitzgerald Responds to FTC Changes to Premerger Notification Process

    WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05), a member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Administrative State, Regulatory Reform, and Antitrust, issued the following statement in response to the Federal Trade Commission’s final rule implementing changes to the premerger notification rules under the Hart-Scott-Rodino (HSR) Act:

    “When Congress passed the Merger Filing Fee Modernization Act of 2022 (MFFMA), it did so with an expectation that the FTC would implement changes to premerger notification as Congress intended. Specifically, to decrease the burden on small businesses. Instead, FTC Chair Khan used this as an opportunity to propose a rule that completely contradicted the intent of MFFMA, which would have resulted in increased burdens across all businesses, and disincentivized smaller mergers relative to larger ones.

    “Last week, the FTC voted unanimously to finalize the changes to premerger notification. While I remain concerned about the additional burden this rule imposes on merging parties, I commend the work by Republican Commissioners Holyoak and Ferguson to remove many of the proposed rule’s most dangerous provisions, including the collection of labor market information, which has historically not been a standard component of merger enforcement. Additionally, in finalizing the rule, the Commission also voted unanimously to lift its suspension of early termination for mergers that pose no threat to competition, something I’ve advocated for since coming to Congress. Finally, the rule leaves intact the requirement to disclose subsidies from foreign entities of concern, as required through inclusion of my bill, the Foreign Merger Subsidy Disclosure Act, in the MFFMA. This law will enable antitrust regulators to follow the money when countries like China distort markets and harm competition.

    “The final product, which I support, demonstrates the importance of having Republican Commissioners at the FTC to push back on Chair Khan’s radical agenda. The unanimous support for removing the most dangerous provisions of the proposed rule also demonstrates that Chair Khan’s antitrust views do not align with the rest of the Commission, or the American people, and provides further evidence for why her term should not be renewed.” 

    Under the HSR Act, parties to certain mergers and acquisitions are required to submit premerger notification forms that disclose certain information about their proposed deal and business operations. The final rule, submitted to the Federal Register on October 7, 2024, makes changes to the premerger assessment process.

Strong released the following statement regarding the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama’s decision to grant injunctive relief and prevent Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen from removing illegal aliens from the state’s voter rolls: 

    “Any non-citizen found voting in a federal election should be prioritized for deportation. I am appalled that the Department of Justice is litigating against states who are working to prevent non-citizens from voting. What we saw today is a continuation of the Biden-Harris Administration’s four-year campaign against the enforcement of our laws. 

    In Congress, Democrats blocked the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship when registering to vote. 

    As Border Czar, Kamala Harris oversaw the worst border crisis in our nation’s history, and now her Administration is blocking states from maintaining accurate voter rolls.  

    The American people are tired of the double talk. The SAVE Act is lying in the Senate awaiting a vote. If the Democrats really believe in securing this election, Chuck Schumer must bring it to a vote immediately and end this madness.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Salazar and Wasserman Schultz Introduce Legislation to Stop Venezuelan Oil Exports Until Maduro Leaves Power

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chairwoman María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) introduced the Revoke Exemptions for Venezuelan Oil to Curb Autocratic Repression (REVOCAR) Act. The bill is the House of Representatives companion to legislation introduced in the Senate by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL).

    After the presidential election held in Venezuela on July 28, 2024, Nicolás Maduro and his regime have unleashed a torrent of repression and violence towards supporters of María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, the leader of the opposition and winner of the election, respectively. Since then, the Biden-Harris Administration renewed U.S. oil company Chevron’s license to operate in Venezuela just 33 days after the stolen election, undermining the United States’ ability to adequately pressure Maduro to concede his defeat and leave power.

    The REVOCAR Act will rescind these licenses and ensure American and European companies can no longer finance Maduro’s repression and hasten the democratic transition process the Venezuelan people voted for.

    “It’s long past time to cut off the flow of money that the Maduro Dictatorship uses to oppress their people,” said Chairwoman Salazar. “We are sending a loud and clear message that if Maduro stays, there will be no oil money for the Venezuelan regime.”

    At a recent hearing, Chairwoman Salazar condemned several oil companies in the United States and Europe for continuing to conduct business with PDVSA, Venezuela’s state-owned oil company and financial lifeline for the Maduro regime, even after the results of the July 28 presidential election. Salazar noted that companies like Chevron, Repsol, Eni, and Maurel et Prom are profiting off the continued repression of the Venezuelan opposition by operating with PDVSA.

    The REVOCAR Act ends Maduro’s financial lifeline by prohibiting American citizens and companies from engaging with PDVSA by eliminating General Licenses issued by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). These licenses are necessary to do business with the Maduro regime. The prohibitions would extend for three years or until the President certifies that a peaceful, democratic transfer of power to Venezuelan president-elect Edmundo González Urrutia has taken place.

    “Maduro’s brutal regime refuses to honor the undeniable election results, despite clear evidence proving his loss. Rescinding these special licenses, which exclusively serve to subsidize the regime’s crony corruption, violent repression, and flagrant human rights abuses, must be part of our international effort to reject Maduro’s election theft,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “If we truly intend to see through a peaceful transition of power and honor the will of the Venezuelan people, we cannot afford to indulge fossil fuel companies’ investors at the expense of democracy.”

    “Despite the sweeping and clear opposition victory in the recent Venezuelan presidential election, the Maduro regime refused to release results, announced that it had won instead, and arbitrarily arrested thousands of opposition supporters,” said Senator Durbin. “We must put an end to the outright theft of the Venezuelan voters’ overwhelming choice for a better future. I’m pleased that Reps. Wasserman Schultz and Salazar are introducing the House bill to terminate all U.S. petroleum cooperation and related trade with Venezuela until the legitimate results of the recent election are respected. The Maduro regime clings to power using oil revenues dependent on U.S. involvement. Under our bill, that will end, and so will Maduro’s financial strength.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: STATEMENT: Congresswoman Ramirez Discusses Democracy, Human Rights, Migration with Grassroots, Indigenous Communities in Honduras

    Chicago, IL – Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement after returning from a six-day delegation to Honduras with other Congressional offices to meet with and learn from grassroots and Indigenous communities, and civil society.

    “I recently returned from a trip to Honduras, where I had the privilege to listen to and learn with grassroots and indigenous groups about the root causes of migration. I want to express my gratitude for the time, wisdom, and generosity of local leaders and communities. We who care about human rights, land defense, environmental protection, and democracy-building in the United States have much to learn from the organizers and movement leaders across Honduras.

    While we may be thousands of miles apart, the fights for justice across Latin America – struggles that drive migration to the U.S. southern border – share common roots with the movements and organizing in Illinois’ Third Congressional District. Whether it is the struggle to ensure community control of land, resist displacement, expose corporate influence’s destructive impact on our environment and politics, or build solidarity economies and cooperatives, we cannot deny that our efforts, stability, and success are interconnected.

    It is also impossible to visit with the Garifuna, the Lenca, the Campesinos, the land defenders, and those who mourn assassinated leaders and disappeared loved ones and not face the US’ complicity in creating conditions that drive the migration of hondureños. For too long, American interests have treated Honduras and other Central American countries as our “back patio” and our free market playgrounds. For decades, US companies that participate in human rights violations and the destruction of the cultural, political, and environmental inheritance of the Honduran people have acted with impunity. US dollars, influence, and leadership have been used to privatize, displace, extract, intimidate, and silence those who would dare to defend their ancestral land rights, their collective economic models, and their precious natural resources.

    I sat both with Juan López’s compañeras and with the leaders who rose up after the assassination of Berta Cáceres Flores. Justice must be realized for environmentalists Juan and Berta. Protection must be implemented for all those who continue to experience grave threats as they fight for their democracy and human rights. Land restoration must be delivered for the Garifuna, Campesino collectives, and Lenca people.

    Is there more that must be demanded and delivered by Honduras’ own government? Absolutely. As a US Congressperson, I am concerned that the United States’ own policies and practices reflect a commitment to the dignity, sovereignty, and self-determination of the Honduran people.

    As a founder of the Global Migration Caucus and the Vice Ranking Member of the Homeland Security committee, it is clear to me that to address the global crisis of migration, we must protect the sources of life for people across the globe – the land, the water, the air, the forests. We must use our influence and resources to ensure that everyone has not only the right to migrate, but the right to remain, free of persecution, violence, economic deprivation, and corruption.

    Last week, 6 Republican Members of Congress from Pennsylvania, who all refused to certify the 2020 election, filed a lawsuit to strip voting rights away from U.S. citizens living abroad, including military personnel

     

    CARNEGIE, PA–  Today, Navy veteran Congressman Chris Deluzio, alongside five fellow House Democratic veterans, slammed election-denying Republicans for their attempts to disenfranchise active duty servicemembers, and asked Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to guarantee that the voting rights of military personnel stationed overseas are protected. Last week, 6 House Republicans, all of whom refused to certify the 2020 election, filed a lawsuit challenging the Uniform and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), which requires states to allow eligible Americans living abroad, including military personnel, to vote in federal elections. Secretary of Defense Austin is the principal executive official with administrative responsibility for carrying out UOCAVA. The letter, co-led by Army veteran Congressman Pat Ryan and Air Force veteran Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan, was also signed by Marine Corps veterans Congressman Seth Moulton and Congressman Salud Carbajal, as well as Army veteran Congressman Mike Thompson.

     

    “The un-American efforts by my Republican colleagues attacking our service members’ right to vote is despicable. With this letter today, we are drawing a line in the sand,” said Congressman Chris Deluzio. “I will always fight like hell to ensure that every eligible American, in uniform abroad or here at home, can freely exercise their right to vote.”

     

    “Six election-denying extremists are trying to disenfranchise our men and women in uniform. It’s disgraceful and anti-democratic,” said Congressman Pat Ryan. “These are quite literally troops who raised their right hands and swore an oath to protect and defend our Constitution – and now extremists are stripping them of their constitutional rights. This isn’t about Democrats and Republicans. It’s about doing right by those putting their lives on the line for our country, and they deserve to know immediately their right to vote will be protected.”

     

    “Pennsylvania is the bedrock on which the foundation of our constitution and rights as Americans was formed. I am deeply ashamed of my colleagues who are trying to prevent members of our military, who are stationed overseas from voting in this upcoming election,” said Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan. “We cannot allow six Republican Pennsylvanian members, the same ones who refused to certify the 2020, to toss aside those rights and disenfranchise the very people who are serving  us and are in harm’s way across the globe. I stand alongside other veterans in Congress in sending this letter to Secretary Austin to ensure our servicemembers’ fundamental rights are preserved and protected in this upcoming election.”

     

    The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) was enacted by Congress in 1986. UOCAVA requires that the states and territories allow members of the United States Uniformed Services to register and vote absentee in elections for Federal offices. The legislation was last updated in 2010 to make voting easier for service members. In March 2021, President Biden issued Executive Order 14019, which put further steps in place to ensure service member’s right to vote.

    Dear Secretary Austin,

     

    We write to express deep concern about the actions of our congressional colleagues and request your support in ensuring overseas military personnel and Americans abroad retain their right to participate fully in U.S. elections. My colleagues are attempting to usurp the right to vote from our men and women in uniform, as well as their families. These Americans who raised their right hand and swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution may be stripped of one of the most fundamental rights it guarantees. 

     

    Earlier this month, six Congressmen, who all refused to certify the 2020 election, filed a lawsuit threatening the right to vote for Americans overseas. Our colleagues seek to litigate longstanding federal law at the expense of our service members. Undercutting confidence in our free and fair elections by disenfranchising our service men and women is unacceptable. Unfortunately, we must remind them that it is the Sense of Congress: that “each uniformed services voter receives the utmost consideration and cooperation when voting, each valid ballot cast by such a voter is duly counted, and all eligible American voters, regardless of race, ethnicity, disability, the language they speak, or the resources of the community in which they live, should have an equal opportunity to cast a vote and to have that vote counted.”

     

    As the principal executive official with administrative responsibility for carrying out The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), we seek further clarification on how you will carry out this Act and if this lawsuit will affect the constitutional rights of service members. UOCAVA was enacted by Congress in 1986 and was last updated in 2010 to make voting easier for service members. Executive Order 14019 puts further steps in place to ensure service member’s right to vote.

     

    While some of our colleagues are actively seeking to sow discord and misinformation, we urge you to carry out President Biden’s executive order and Federal Law to the best of your ability and ensure that all Americans have their constitutionally guaranteed right to participate in federal elections. 

     

    Thank you for considering this request. We look forward to hearing what the Department is doing to ensure that servicemembers and Americans abroad can have confidence that their ballots will be counted.
