    As the first gay immigrant in Congress, Congressmember Garcia has always fought to protect marginalized communities in the workplace and beyond. In June, Congressman Garcia sent a letter to federal officials asking them to help protect LGBTQ+ people from violence during Pride month in response to threats from anti-Pride extremists. In January, Congressman Garcia demanded that the Pentagon resolve cases of LGBTQ+ people dishonorably expelled from the military under “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Last year, Congressman Garcia introduced the International Human Rights Defense Act with Senator Markey to enshrine global protections for LGBTQ+ people in US law and foreign policy, reaffirming the U.S.’s role in protecting and promoting LGBTQ+ rights. As former Mayor of the City of Long Beach, Congressman Garcia worked to ensure the city achieved a perfect score in the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index every year he served in office.   • MIL-OSI USA: Congressman Valadao Supports Legislation to Prioritize Valley Fever Vaccine Development

    WASHINGTON – Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-22) recently joined Congressman John Duarte (CA-13) to introduce the Valley Fever Awareness and Vaccine Development and Manufacturing Act. The legislation aims to address the pressing need for a human vaccine for Valley Fever by supporting the development, approval, licensing, and initial manufacturing of a vaccine.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Kean Honors Local Law Enforcement at Hometown Heroes Event

    (October 15, 2024) BERNARDSVILLE, NJ – Last Friday, Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07) hosted his inaugural Law Enforcement Hometown Heroes event at the Bernardsville Library to recognize and honor outstanding law enforcement officers in the community. In attendance were Bernardsville Council President Al Ribeiro, Bernards Township Mayor Jennifer Asay, the Hometown Heroes, along with their families, friends, and supervisors. 

    Congressman Kean honored 22 Hometown Heroes, who represent all six counties in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. Each Hometown Hero was nominated by their chiefs and supervisors for the outstanding work they do every day. 

    “First responders and law enforcement are the backbone of our communities’ safety,” said Congressman Kean. “I am fortunate to represent a district filled with some of the most selfless and hard-working people, including those we recognized as Law Enforcement Hometown Heroes.     DAVENPORT – U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks led 232 bipartisan House members in urging House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to address the scheduled 2.8% cut in reimbursement for physicians who participate in Medicare before the end of the 118th Congress. With rising provider costs, the proposed 2025 Medicare physician payment schedule would threaten to impact patient care, especially for rural Americans, and contribute to provider burnout, which is already straining the healthcare workforce. 

    “As a Physician, I am thrilled to lead more than 200 bipartisan House members in urging leadership on both sides to address the proposed doc reimbursement cuts,” said Miller-Meeks. “The overwhelming, bipartisan support is a testament to the importance of fixing this issue to preserve patient access to quality care.     Dear Speaker Johnson and Minority Leader Jeffries:

    The undersigned bipartisan members of Congress write to urge you to expeditiously pass legislative fixes that not only stop another damaging round of cuts to Medicare payments, but also provide greater certainty and stability for clinicians serving Medicare beneficiaries. On July 10, the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Calendar Year (CY) 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) Proposed Rule, which includes provisions subjecting all physicians and other clinicians treating Medicare patients to a 2.8 percent payment cut. In lieu of these harmful cuts, which, absent federal legislation, will take effect on January 1, 2025, Congress must pass a bill providing physicians and other clinicians with a payment update that takes into account the cost of delivering care to patients.

    The scheduled 2.8 percent reduction represents the fifth consecutive year that CMS issued a fee schedule regulation lowering payments to physicians and other clinicians. While Congress has intervened in the past four years to mitigate portions of these cuts, the fact remains that the MPFS is inherently broken. Continued payment cuts undermine the ability of independent clinical practices—especially in rural and underserved areas—to care for their community, which reduces patient access to care. These ongoing cuts have forced medical groups and integrated systems of care to make difficult choices, such as imposing hiring freezes, delaying system improvements, postponing transitions to value-based care models, and potentially eliminating services. Because healthcare often comprises a large percentage of employment in rural areas, the closure of independent practices not only lessens patient access to care but also jeopardizes the livelihood of rural Americans.

    Over the last two decades, Medicare payment rates have fallen by 29 percent when adjusted for the costs of running a practice. Additionally, compliance with the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) is both expensive and a flawed method of measuring quality and costs of care, resulting in steep and unfair penalties. These payment cuts and MIPS compliance costs also come on the heels of the extremely disruptive COVID-19 public health emergency and the Change Healthcare cyberattack.

    The CY 2025 MPFS Proposed Rule highlights that the estimated cost of running a practice—covering expenses like rent, staff compensation, and purchasing supplies and equipment—is expected to increase substantially next year. This widening gap between what Medicare pays and the cost of delivering quality care to patients demands Congressional intervention.

    Thankfully, bipartisan lawmakers have come together to propose several legislative solutions aimed at providing permanent relief from the long-term problems plaguing the Medicare payment system. We urge Congressional Leadership to move legislation that provides physicians and other clinicians with a permanent, annual inflationary update in Medicare equivalent to the Medicare Economic Index (MEI). We also request targeted reforms to statutory MPFS budget neutrality requirements, raising the current MPFS budget neutrality threshold to reflect 2024 dollars, requiring CMS to cross-check utilization assumptions associated with newly unbundled codes that trigger budget neutrality cuts, mandating CMS to review key elements of practice expense costs every five years, and limiting changes to the MPFS conversion factor to no more than 2.5 percent in a given year. Some of these legislative solutions have already passed the Energy and Commerce Committee in 2023 with strong bipartisan support. Moreover, we urge Congressional Leadership to utilize bipartisan offsets as we address all issues pertaining to Medicare payments to physicians and other clinicians.

    Increased instability in the healthcare sector due to looming cost hikes impacts the ability of physicians and clinicians to provide the highest quality of care and threatens patient access to affordable healthcare. Rural physicians and other clinicians, along with those treating underserved populations, are facing the most daunting challenge of trying to provide care in the wake of devastating reimbursement cuts. To prevent the very real scenario of insufficient access to physicians and other clinicians treating Medicare patients, Congress must stop the 2.8 percent payment cut from occurring in 2025, enact targeted reforms to statutory budget neutrality requirements, and provide physicians with a payment update reflective of inflationary pressures. We stand ready to work with you to pass crucial bipartisan legislative initiatives before the conclusion of the 118th Congress.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ciscomani Hosts Women’s Health Roundtable Event in Tucson

    While at this event, Ciscomani met with Maria Martinez, a two-time survivor of breast cancer who is fighting to expand access to critical care after she was denied an MRI by her insurers.     • Ciscomani cosponsored H.R.4534, the Women and Lung Cancer Research and Preventive Services Act introduced by Rep. Boyle (PA-02) to address a leading cause of cancer death in women by assessing the status of existing research and gaps in current lung cancer research in women, as well as identifies new opportunities for research and initiatives. 

    • Ciscomani cosponsored H.R.6749,the Menopause Research and Equity Act of 2023 introduced by Rep. Clarke (NY-09) which directs the NIH to evaluate the results and status of completed and ongoing research related to menopause, perimenopause, or midlife women’s health, and to conduct and support additional research. Specifically, NIH will highlight any gaps in knowledge and what treatments there could be for menopause-related symptoms. 

    • At a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing, Ciscomani questioned Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra about initiatives to promote and expand access to women’s healthcare.

    Chairman Rosendale Applauds VA’s Decision to Reactivate Reimbursement Kiosks at VA Clinics and Hospitals

    Washington, October 15, 2024

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Chairman Matt Rosendale (MT-02) of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Subcommittee on Technology Modernization released a statement after the Department of Veterans Affairs made the decision to reactivate travel reimbursement kiosks at over 750 VA clinic and hospital locations nationwide as well as announce plans to install dozens more at VA facilities lacking kiosks. This comes after the VA received immense pushback from veterans, advocates, and lawmakers alike over their failed transition to the online-based Beneficiary Travel Self-Service System (BTSSS). The BTSSS previously led some veterans to give up on the program in frustration and not obtain the reimbursement they have earned. The return of the kiosks is especially important in Montana as veterans travel hundreds of miles to receive VA care and need complete and timely reimbursements that the BTSSS simply cannot provide.              

    “Veterans across Montana have told me about difficulties with the Beneficiary Travel Self-Service System, especially for some veterans who are not as proficient in technology. Veterans liked the old kiosk system,” said Chairman Rosendale. “It would have made more sense to improve the kiosks than completely phase them out. I am glad to see them back in the Treasure State and across the country.”

    BACKGROUND:

    • In 2022, Chairman Rosendale sent a letter to Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough explaining the failures of the BTSSS due to the trouble veterans had using computers and the plight of veterans who reside in rural Montana and do not have reliable access to the internet.
    • The Office of the Inspector general found that from February 2021 through July 2022, the Beneficiary Travel Self-Service System fell short of all four metrics on increased automated claims adjudication, reduced manual overrides, greater new system usage, and more self-service use.
    • In June, Chairman Rosendale also held a hearing on the failed BTSSS.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Hageman Introduces Bill to Protect the Upper Colorado River Basin Fund

    Washington, DC – Congresswoman Harriet Hageman introduced legislation that would require the Bureau of Reclamation to analyze the economic consequences of drawing from the customer-funded Basin Fund to implement the experimental actions called for in the July 2024 SEIS Record of Decision – which would result in Reclamation having to incorporate these costs into its annual budgeting.

    Representative Hageman stated, “Once again, misguided policy is driving up the cost of energy for Western states – in this case for hydropower. There will be significant costs associated with cutting hydropower generation at Glen Canyon Dam to address smallmouth bass below the dam, to be paid for by utility customers. These costs are draining the customer-funded Basin Fund, from which operations, maintenance, and other expenses are paid, further exacerbating the challenge. Taxpayers are again left to pay for the consequences of unsound endangered species and climate policies.”

    Background:

    The Biden-Harris Administration’s Colorado River Long Term Experimental Management Plan SEIS Record of Decision (ROD) was signed on July 5, 2024, with Reclamation implementation beginning just 3 days later, on July 8.  The ROD calls for bypass flows at Glen Canyon Dam, meaning higher flows to combat the presence of predatory smallmouth bass that threaten the federally protected humpback chub. These higher flows bypass hydropower generators in order to cool the river temperature below the dam to attempt to disrupt smallmouth bass downstream.

    The lost hydropower generation must be replaced with power purchased on the open market at expensive prices in the middle of summer peak electricity demand. The Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) makes these purchases from the Upper Colorado River Basin Fund (Basin Fund), which is funded by power revenues; or, in other words, customer funded.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congressman Nickel Announces Over $422,000 in Federal Funding for NC State

    Today, Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) announced $422,235 in funding from the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of Justice Programs (OJP) for North Carolina State University to perform a study on DNA quantification in forensic science. 

    This study aims to improve performance on DNA quantification techniques to allow for the analysis of a wider range of samples. DNA quantification determines the amount of DNA present in a given sample to ensure further analysis is accurate for profiling, comparison, and when working with damaged DNA from crime scenes. This funding provides essential support to overcoming traditional barriers in forensic science in an effort to make the field more accurate and timely in critical situations. 

    “I’m pleased to announce that NC State is putting our federal dollars to good use by advancing studies in forensic sciences,” said Congressman Nickel. “This investment not only supports North Carolina’s educational institutions, but also strengthens our commitment to justice and safety in our communities.”

The bill targets credit repair organizations (CROs) that exploit consumers by charging high fees without delivering on promises to improve credit scores. By strengthening regulations, the bill will ensure transparency and accountability in the industry.

    “Financial-services companies and consumer advocacy groups are grateful for congressional action on behalf of consumers, having seen first-hand the real harm credit repair organizations cause consumers, often charging hundreds of dollars a month, but yielding few if any positive results,” said American Financial Services Association (AFSA) President and CEO Bill Himpler.

    “Paying for credit repair is almost always a waste of money,” said Andrew Pizor, senior attorney at the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC). “The amendment from Representatives Nickel and Kim will help ensure consumers are not prey to credit repair scams and that they don’t get charged unless they get the results they are paying for.”

    Ed Boltz, Legislative Chair of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA), whose members represent people in and after bankruptcy, agreed that the “Ending Scam Credit Repair Act” will stop credit repair jamming schemes, which mislead consumers by holding themselves out as “lawyers,” but “will also now make it clear that honest attorneys can provide advice and assistance to those who need real help with credit report errors.”

    The bipartisan Ending Scam Credit Repair Act empowers consumers by ensuring that CROs only receive payment after delivering documented improvements to credit reports, while increasing civil penalties for violations. The bill also prohibits CROs from “jamming” financial institutions with duplicative requests, preventing consumer reporting agencies and data furnishers from addressing legitimate credit report issues. With this bill, Rep. Nickel is taking a stand to protect Americans from predatory credit repair schemes and safeguard their financial futures.

    Today, Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) announced $252,846 in federal funding from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) for the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NCCASA).

    The grant will support the coordination of state and territory victim services and enhance coordination between federal, state, and local entities engaged in mitigating violence against women. Funds will be used to bolster local sexual assault programs and service providers, train law enforcement in appropriate responses, and conduct public service campaigns.

    KINGSTON, NY –  Today, Army veteran Congressman Pat Ryan, alongside five fellow House Democratic veterans, slammed election-denying Republicans for their attempts to disenfranchise active duty servicemembers, and asked Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to guarantee that the voting rights of military personnel stationed overseas are protected. Last week, 6 House Republicans, all of whom refused to certify the 2020 election, filed a lawsuit challenging the Uniform and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), which requires states to allow eligible Americans living abroad, including military personnel, to vote in federal elections. Secretary of Defense Austin is the principal executive official with administrative responsibility for carrying out UOCAVA. The letter, co-led by Navy veteran Congressman Chris Deluzio and Air Force veteran Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan, was also signed by Marine Corps veterans Congressman Seth Moulton and Congressman Salud Carbajal, as well as Army veteran Congressman Mike Thompson.

    “Six election-denying extremists are trying to disenfranchise our men and women in uniform. It’s disgraceful and anti-democratic,” said Congressman Pat Ryan. “These are quite literally troops who raised their right hands and swore an oath to protect and defend our Constitution – and now extremists are stripping them of their constitutional rights. This isn’t about Democrats and Republicans. It’s about doing right by those putting their lives on the line for our country, and they deserve to know immediately their right to vote will be protected.”

    “The un-American efforts by my Republican colleagues attacking our service members’ right to vote is despicable.     “Pennsylvania is the bedrock on which the foundation of our constitution and rights as Americans was formed. I am deeply ashamed of my colleagues who are trying to prevent members of our military, who are stationed overseas from voting in this upcoming election,” said Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan. “We cannot allow six Republican Pennsylvanian members, the same ones who refused to certify the 2020, to toss aside those rights and disenfranchise the very people who are serving  us and are in harm’s way across the globe.     The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) was enacted by Congress in 1986. UOCAVA requires that the states and territories allow members of the United States Uniformed Services to register and vote absentee in elections for Federal offices. The legislation was last updated in 2010 to make voting easier for service members. In March 2021, President Biden issued Executive Order 14019, which put further steps in place to ensure service member’s right to vote.

    Dear Secretary Austin,

    We write to express deep concern about the actions of our congressional colleagues and request your support in ensuring overseas military personnel and Americans abroad retain their right to participate fully in U.S. elections. My colleagues are attempting to usurp the right to vote from our men and women in uniform, as well as their families. These Americans who raised their right hand and swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution may be stripped of one of the most fundamental rights it guarantees. 

    Earlier this month, six Congressmen, who all refused to certify the 2020 election, filed a lawsuit threatening the right to vote for Americans overseas. Our colleagues seek to litigate longstanding federal law at the expense of our service members. Undercutting confidence in our free and fair elections by disenfranchising our service men and women is unacceptable. Unfortunately, we must remind them that it is the Sense of Congress: that “each uniformed services voter receives the utmost consideration and cooperation when voting, each valid ballot cast by such a voter is duly counted, and all eligible American voters, regardless of race, ethnicity, disability, the language they speak, or the resources of the community in which they live, should have an equal opportunity to cast a vote and to have that vote counted.”

    As the principal executive official with administrative responsibility for carrying out The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), we seek further clarification on how you will carry out this Act and if this lawsuit will affect the constitutional rights of service members. UOCAVA was enacted by Congress in 1986 and was last updated in 2010 to make voting easier for service members. Executive Order 14019 puts further steps in place to ensure service member’s right to vote.

    While some of our colleagues are actively seeking to sow discord and misinformation, we urge you to carry out President Biden’s executive order and Federal Law to the best of your ability and ensure that all Americans have their constitutionally guaranteed right to participate in federal elections.

    Federal grant will support the state-administered RI Rebounds Technical Assistance Program

    PROVIDENCE, RI – U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Congressmen Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo announced $1,600,000 in competitive grant funding for the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation to better support small businesses in the construction, transportation, and renewable energy industries through the RI Rebounds Technical Assistance Program. Administered through the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) Investing in America Small Business Opportunity Program (SBOP) that was reauthorized and expanded by the American Rescue Plan Act, this award will assist underserved and very small businesses in Rhode Island. 

    Rhode Island’s application for this $1.6 million SSBCI grant was chosen from a share of $75 million in federal funding nationwide to provide critical technical assistance to small businesses and entrepreneurs – helping these small companies access financing opportunities.

    This latest grant comes on top of the $61.7 million in federal SSBCI funding Reed and Whitehouse secured last year to promote small business growth and entrepreneurship across the Ocean State.

    “I helped pass the American Rescue Plan Act to deliver pandemic relief to help small businesses stay afloat, recover and grow, and position themselves for long-term success.  This latest round of federal funding will help connect more small businesses with access to capital and other tools to compete, grow, and strengthen Main Street businesses in communities across the state,” said Senator Jack Reed.

    BACKGROUND

    Signed into law in 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act reauthorized and expanded SSBCI, which provides nearly $10 billion to support small businesses and help them the access the capital they need to invest in job-creating opportunities. SSBCI provides funds to states, the District of Columbia, territories, and Tribal governments to promote entrepreneurship, support small business ownership, and democratize access to capital across the country, including in underserved communities.

    Earlier this year, the Department of Treasury announced that Rhode Island was approved to use $773,624 in SSBCI allocation formula-based technical assistance grant funding to support RI Commerce in providing legal, accounting, and financial advisory services to underserved and very small businesses preparing to apply for support from state and/or federal small business programs, including connecting companies directly with the state’s SSBCI-supported capital programs.

    Amity Foundation received $1,000,000 for the Amistad de Los Angeles residential re-entry facility, a housing project that supports currently incarcerated men on the path to re-entry and recovery. This funding allows for the renovation of the existing facility to increase the capacity to serve a greater number of individuals (26 new beds) and significantly improve the standard of housing for the current 184 residents.
     
    CASA/LA received $640,000 for the Transition Age Youth Program, which serves youth 12-17 and non-minor dependents 18-21 in the child welfare system at risk of entry or re-entry into the justice system.     ALBUQUERQUE—Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) led a letter urging House Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04) to bring the U.S. House of Representatives back into session to approve necessary funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Small Business Administration (SBA) to fulfill their Hurricane Helene and Milton relief missions. Recent legislation has provided initial relief funds but falls critically short of what will be necessary to address the scale of destruction and the recovery needs for Fiscal Year 2025. From Milton and Helene, to wildfires and flooding at home in New Mexico, replenishment of federal disaster funds is critically needed.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Sorensen Helps Secure Over $22,000 for Illinois State University Police

    PEORIA, IL – Today, Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) announced that he helped secure over $22,000 for Illinois State University (ISU) Police. The money will be used to improve relations with underserved communities on campus. 

    “We need to make sure Illinois State University police have the tools to keep every student and neighbor safe,” said Sorensen. “That means providing them with the resources to engage with the many diverse communities that exist on campus and across Bloomington and Normal. I was proud to help ISU secure this important grant funding that will make their campus safer for students, university police, staff, and faculty.”   

    “Illinois State University Police is grateful to Representative Sorensen for supporting this effort to engage and uplift marginalized voices on our campus,” said Illinois State University Chief of Police Aaron Woodruff. “This funding will create new training, accreditation, and engagement opportunities that will enrich our student experience and enhance safety for the broader Bloomington/Normal community.” 

    The $22,005 in funding for ISU is coming from the Community Policing Development (CPD) Program under the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office, which provides funding to local and state law enforcement agencies to implement demonstration or pilot projects that offer creative ideas to advance crime fighting, community engagement, problem solving, or organizational changes in support of community policing.  

    This past May, Sorensen wrote a letter on behalf of ISU to the CPD grant program manager in support of the university receiving this grant. Sorensen also led a group of 24 of his colleagues in calling on Congress to fully fund the COPS program in direct response to roundtable discussions and meetings he has hosted with law enforcement from across Central and Northwestern Illinois.   

    Congressman Eric Sorensen serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Prior to serving in Congress, Sorensen was a local meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities for nearly 20 years. I am grateful that this funding will have a huge impact on improving the daily lives of our brave men and women in law enforcement.     WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) joined U.S. Representatives Randy Weber (TX-14), Chip Roy (TX-21), and other Texas Republican lawmakers in calling on the Biden-Harris Administration to immediately provide the necessary data to protect the integrity of Texas elections and ensure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote in the State of Texas. The letter to the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) follows Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson’s request for citizenship verification data and the federal government’s failure to meet the deadline for providing this crucial information.

    “Americans deserve confidence in knowing that only legal citizens are casting their vote in the United States of America,” said Congressman August Pfluger. “I am proud to work alongside other Texans in demanding that the Biden-Harris Administration protect the integrity of our elections.”

    “The Harris-Biden administration’s refusal to provide Texas with crucial information is a clear dereliction of duty,” said Rep. Weber. “They’re turning a blind eye to noncitizens influencing our elections, and they even killed the SAVE Act, which would have barred noncitizens from voting. Federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting, so why won’t they hand over the voter rolls Texas needs to keep our elections clean? My Texas Republican colleagues and I demand they release the information without delay.”

    “Texas has a duty to prevent noncitizens from voting. The Biden-Harris administration is trying to prevent that for the same reason they fought the SAVE Act (H.R. 8281): they want noncitizens — especially illegal aliens — to vote,” said Rep. Roy. “Public confidence in elections is a necessary cornerstone of any representative government. That confidence must be earned through diligence and transparency.”

    In recent weeks, Governor Greg Abbott announced the removal of 6,500 potential noncitizens from Texas voter rolls, highlighting the critical need for further verification before the upcoming election. The federal government has thus far failed to comply with an urgent request made by the State of Texas for access to USCIS data, which is crucial in verifying voter eligibility.

    We write to you today as Members of Congress, and as Texans, in support of Secretary of State Jane Nelson’s September 18, 2024 request to your agency to assist the State of Texas in verifying that noncitizens are not registered to vote in our great state of Texas. Governor Greg Abbott has already announced the removal of 6,500 potential noncitizens from Texas voter rolls; given this unsettling reality, the federal government has a duty to ensure that Texas can accurately verify the citizenship of its voters.

    As you know, and as Secretary Nelson notes in her letter to you, both federal and Texas law prohibit noncitizens from registering to and casting a vote in the State of Texas. Although the Biden-Harris administration refuses to take any action to protect states against the influx of illegal aliens at our southern border-1,254 miles of which borders Texas-you still retain a constitutional, statutory, and moral imperative to assist the state in doing what is right.

    The request submitted by the state to obtain USCIS citizenship data regarding voter registration in Texas is not only legal, but urgent. The election is around the corner, with the deadline for voter registration already passed on October 7th, and the deadline for absentee and mail-in ballots is October 25th. It is paramount that the state’s county registrars can check and confirm the eligibility of each voter, and your agency is the only entity with the data to help. The deadline provided by the state, October 2nd, left your agency with ample time to provide that information. On the afternoon of October 2nd, Secretary of State Nelson informed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that, “my office has not received any reply from the federal government.”

    This is an unacceptable dereliction of your duty.

    Texas’s situation is not an isolated case. The Biden-Harris administration has consistently dismissed the prospect of non-citizens voting, erroneously claiming, “current laws to prevent noncitizen voting are working.” Yet the administration is preventing states from enforcing those laws, as evidenced by the failure to provide Texas with citizenship data, and its recent lawsuit against Alabama’s removal of non­citizens from its voter rolls. In June 2012, the State of Florida was forced to sue DHS to gain access to the SAVE System to help verify the citizenship status of voters in Florida.

    We reiterate our intent that you expeditiously provide the data requested by the state-data that you are required to provide under federal law. To that end, please provide our offices with copies of your correspondence with Secretary of State Nelson. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Pettersen Announces $850,000 for Affordable Housing in Leadville, Stops by Tourism & Economic Development Office

    U.S. Representative Brittany Pettersen (CO-07) recently traveled across the high country of the 7th Congressional District of Colorado, announcing federal funding for an affordable housing project in Leadville, meeting with constituents at a community coffee, and stopping by the newly renovated Tourism and Economic Development Office. 

    At her first stop in Lake County, Rep. Pettersen attended the weekly Leadville Community Coffee to hear firsthand from local nonprofits and other organizations about updates on their work in the community. During the visit, Pettersen provided an update on her work in Congress. Despite dysfunction in Washington, Pettersen reiterated resources her office offers to rural communities like Leadville – from the Community Funding Project process to federal grants and more.    

    Earlier this year, Rep. Pettersen secured $13.9 million in federal funding for 15 community projects, including $850,000 for an affordable housing development in Leadville. She recently toured the site with local leaders, including County Commissioners Jeff Fiedler, Hal Edwards, and Sarah Mudge, Leadville Mayor Dana Greene, and Lake County Regional Housing Authority Director Jackie Whelihan, and several members of the Housing Authority Board. The project, located just outside downtown Leadville, will provide walkable access to stores, schools, and the library.

    To close out her visit to Lake County, Pettersen stopped by the new Tourism and Economic Development Office. During the visit, Pettersen discussed her bipartisan legislation – the Special District Grant Accessibility Act – to codify a definition of “special district” in federal law and ensure that districts are eligible for all appropriate forms of federal assistance. Additionally, Pettersen discussed the need to bring more federal dollars back home to communities in Lake County to update aging water infrastructure and ensure everyone has access to clean drinking water.

    Yesterday, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) joined Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24) in introducing legislation to strengthen protections for rail yardmasters by giving them the same protections as other rail yard workers. The bipartisan Railroad Yardmaster Protection Act would include railroad yardmasters under federal hours of service requirements which currently cover safety-sensitive rail workers such as locomotive engineers, conductors, switchmen, dispatchers, and signal employees. The bill has been endorsed by SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers. 

    “Railroad incidents have sparked major concerns here in my district and across America,” said Congressman Lawler. “Ensuring safe conditions for those who operate our railways is essential to ensuring the safety not only of these workers but also of the communities in which these railways operate. Unfortunately, yardmasters are exempt from existing hours of service laws despite the integral rial they play. The Railroad Yardmaster Protection Act will ensure safe conditions for these essential workers and I’m proud to join Congressman Carbajal in introducing this critical common sense legislation.”

    “Yardmasters serve a critical role in our nation’s railroad network. They oversee the operations of a rail yard and manage the duties of various rail workers” said Congressman Carbajal. “They not only direct the activities of their fellow workers but also passenger and freight trains when they arrive and depart. But currently, there are no limitations to the number of hours a yardmaster can work in a day, week, or month. The funding would be used for improvements to the existing Agricultural Education and Training Center’s facilities to serve as a location for training students on vocational agriculture and culinary studies.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Malliotakis Calls for Federal Prosecution of Post Office Vandal

    (STATEN ISLAND, NY) – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis today released the following statement after the individual responsible for vandalizing the Great Kills Post Office boxes was arrested:

    “Following yesterday’s vandalism of post office boxes at the Great Kills Post Office, I contacted both the United States Postal Service as well as the NYPD so the boxes could be repainted and the perp pursued. I’m thankful to the NYPD for the quick apprehension of the vandal responsible for this graffiti who has also been previously arrested for defacing other businesses and neighborhoods across Staten Island. We urge the District Attorney to prosecute him to the fullest extent, and would like to see the U.S. Department of Justice prosecute him federally as well, as it’s a felony to willfully damage government property under 18 U.S.C. § 1361. Graffiti not only diminishes the quality of life for all residents, but if gone unpunished, will eventually lead to more serious acts of vandalism and disorder in our community. We continue to work with our government partners to have the boxes restored to their original condition and ensure other acts of vandalism are deterred through strong enforcement and greater vigilance.”
