  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Rotorua Police continue to appeal for information to identify motorcyclist involved in fatal collision

    Rotorua Police can now release the name of the man who died after being struck by a motorcycle on Edmund Road on 15 June.

    He was Paige Johnson, aged 24, from Rotorua.

    Police have received a number of calls and online reports in response to our previous appeals for information and we would like to thank everyone who has contacted us so far.

    We are now appealing for further public assistance to identify and locate the rider of the motorcycle involved.

    Since 15 July, the investigation team has been working to trace the movements of the motorcycle that day.

    CCTV footage provided by members of the public has helped establish that following the collision, the motorcycle travelled from Edmund Road on to Clayton Road, then along Thomas Road and in to Gordon Road, heading east.

    Today, a significant police presence has been in and around this area, speaking with residents and gathering further information. The response has been extremely positive, with several valuable pieces of information being received.

    Police are also continuing to support Paige’s family, who are devastated by his loss. Both Paige’s family and Police reiterate our appeal to anyone with knowledge of this incident, the motorcycle, or its rider to contact Police – either directly or anonymously via Crime Stoppers. 

    We also want to reiterate our appeal to the motorcyclist to come forward and do the right thing – both for their own sake and for Paige’s grieving family. We know Paige’s death will likely be weighing heavily on this person and it is important that we speak to them to understand the full picture of what occurred.  

    Additionally, we want to remind members of our community that assisting anyone involved in this incident in a way that intentionally hinders the police investigation could have serious consequences.

    Photographs of the motorcycle and its rider are attached. The motorcycle is believed to be a black and gold Kawasaki Ninja 600cc. The rider is believed to be male and has a distinctive full-length tattoo on his left leg.

  • MIL-OSI China: Defying all odds, “Desert Poplar Spirit” works green miracles in Taklimakan

    In the vast wilderness of Xinjiang’s Taklimakan Desert, the populus euphratica, or the desert poplar, thrives against harsh conditions, withstanding cold, heat, alkali, and extreme drought while serving as a natural barrier against sandstorms.

    Mirroring the indomitable nature of the trees, a dedicated group has taken root there, tirelessly working to transform sand into greenery. Their perseverance has crystallized into what locals call the “Desert Poplar Spirit.”

    Nurjamal Emdulla is one of them. After graduating from college in 2010, she returned to her hometown of Awati County in Aksu Prefecture to join the local forestry and grassland bureau.

    In 2021, local authorities initiated a sand control project in the county’s Aiximan region on the northwestern margin of the Taklimakan, an area characterized by extensive sand dunes resulting from desertification. This was when Nurjamal Emdulla’s war against the sands began.

    For days on end, she would spend over ten hours in the field. “I teach workers planting techniques — how to dig holes, plant saplings, and water them correctly,” she explained. “And how to secure each sapling’s base with wire mesh to prevent wildlife from damaging the young plants.”

    The commute to and from work was no easy feat. “When sandstorms rage, visibility drops greatly, and even fresh footprints vanish instantly. Getting lost was routine,” she recalled. “My mom would always complain that ‘as a girl, you don’t even have a chance to wear dresses.’”

    For Nurjamal Emdulla, the harsh working conditions were never the real challenge. What truly unsettled her was the seeming impossibility of life taking root in those barren sands.

    For desert control workers, failure is a daily companion. One strong sandstorm can uproot freshly planted saplings in minutes. And the scorching heat and lack of water can also claim the fragile seedlings.

    “Oftentimes, it felt like what we were doing was pointless,” she even considered quitting.

    The turnaround came in spring 2022. One day, Nurjamal Emdulla discovered some new green on the branches of the saxaul shrubs, although it was too pale to be seen. “The trees were alive! I saw hope,” she recalled, with tears brimming in her eyes.

    Nowadays, vast stands of saxaul trees and tamarisk flourish across the once-barren lands, and long-absent wild animals such as hares, foxes and pheasants can be spotted occasionally.

    The same kind of despair that once bothered Nurjamal Emdulla was also felt by people in Wenaletaikushi village in Kashgar Prefecture.

    The village was encircled by desert on three sides, with encroaching dunes just 50 meters from the nearest homes. Villagers tried to plant trees but failed due to drought. Cotton and wheat yields withered season after season. Many abandoned their homes in search of a better life.

    Dai Zhigang, 55, from the forestry and grassland bureau of Kashgar, was sent to work as head of the village in 2023 with a battle cry: “We will tame this desert!”

    With the township government’s backing, the village implemented drip irrigation systems to resolve the water shortage issue. And a trial planting of saxaul trees and Russian olive shrubs began in earnest.

    “At the beginning, villagers were doubtful,” he said; some call him “bottle gourd head,” which in the Uygur language means a stubborn, silly person.

    Indeed, the campaign was not without its struggles: the newly leveled sand dunes would reclaim their heights overnight after sandstorms; the freshly planted saplings were often uprooted by shifting sands.

    After facing one defeat after another, a forest comprised of sand-fixation trees had successfully taken root last year.

    “Now the villagers are convinced and as determined as I am to continue with our planting,” Dai said. More and more villagers have voluntarily joined the desert prevention and control team. By this spring, over 160 hectares of desert had been regreened.

    The resilience and perseverance are evident not only on the frontlines of desert control but also within research institutions, where science is waging its campaign against the encroaching sands.

    Li Zhijun, a professor of Tarim University in Aral City, is called the “Desert Poplar Princess” by her colleagues.

    Over the past 25 years, she has traveled across the Tarim Basin to collect wild poplar germ plasm resources, leading multiple studies on the conservation and restoration of populus euphratica forests.

    Li and her team spend over six months each year conducting field surveys. When their cars get stuck in the soft sands, they pick up their heavy ladders and sampling gear, and trek the remaining kilometers.

    They climb up and down the trees to collect samples and conduct measurements. When encountering strong winds, the team could only hold hands with one another and push forward against wind and sand.

    “The desert poplar is a part of my life. Their resilience and vitality inspire me, enabling me to persist,” said the 62-year-old.

    Over the years, she led her team to over 60 counties and cities, collecting over 4,000 samples of poplar genetic resources. She developed conservation plans for various genetic resources of the species and established a gene pool for China’s poplar resources.

    Every day, such stories of failure, success, struggle and perseverance unfold across the vast deserts of Xinjiang.

    Thanks to decades of sand control efforts, China completed a 3,046-km green belt of trees and sand-blocking technologies last November to fully encircle the Taklimakan Desert.

    A brighter prospect is emerging for the sand fighters.

    “We not only work to control the sand, but will also make money from it,” said Dai Zhigang. Besides planting saxaul and poplar trees to fix the sand, the village is also cultivating economic crops such as licorice, roses, and watermelons. He also set aside a section of vacant sandy land with plans to create a desert park to attract tourists.

    Asked about his plans to retire, he replied, “I’ll keep working with the desert until the day these old bones turn to dust!”

  • MIL-OSI China: World embraces ‘cool’ Chinese creativity with zeal

    Right beside the Louvre in Paris, a limited-edition Mona Lisa-inspired collectible toy known as Labubu was fueling a buying frenzy at a store of Chinese toy giant Pop Mart.

    Also, in Times Square, New York, the fiery-wheeled Ne Zha appeared on a giant screen earlier this year, kicking off a wave of overseas screenings of this Chinese animated hit.

    Additionally, at the ongoing Expo 2025 in Osaka, China-chic interactive experiences such as a Wukong with artificial intelligence (AI) at the China Pavilion have attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors within just a month of its opening.

    Notably, an increasing number of creative and diverse Chinese cultural products have become global sensations in recent times. Empowered by this trend, China’s cultural presence abroad is undergoing a paradigm shift while unveiling a youthful image, with many overseas audiences expressing admiration for how “cool” the country is becoming.

    LABUBU’S GLOBAL REACH

    At the Pop Mart store in K11 Art Mall in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in south China, long queues form regularly. Thai tourist Bonn patiently followed the crowd and finally secured her shopping fix after nearly 30 minutes of waiting. During her trip to Hong Kong, she had spent around 3,000 Hong Kong dollars (about 382 U.S. dollars) on merchandise.

    “Wherever I go, I always visit the local Pop Mart to stock up,” Bonn said. She especially adores the cute Labubu character and has collected hundreds of differently costumed figurines since getting hooked last year.

    “I dress the figurines up and even take them traveling with me,” she added.

    Recently, this sharp-toothed, rabbit-eared forest sprite has gained global popularity. Stores frequently sell out, while prices surge in secondary markets. According to Pop Mart, thanks to original IPs like Labubu, the company’s overseas revenue in the first quarter of 2025 had surged by 475 to 480 percent year on year.

    Created by a Hong Kong artist and blending Nordic mythology with Chinese design, Labubu has struck a global emotional chord. Thai authorities labeled it an “Amazing Thailand Experience Explorer,” its theme song was sung on the streets of Barcelona, and it was even “invited” to attend Milan Fashion Week.

    “Great intellectual properties (IPs) have the power to transcend cultures,” said Chen Xiaoyun, vice president of Pop Mart International Group Limited, adding that the company is committed to creating IPs with diverse aesthetics and gathering global creativity.

    “The export of such new mass culture shows the world what a ‘Cool China’ looks like, while offering universal appeal that resonates through cultural creativity,” wrote Zhang Yiwu, a professor at Peking University.

    TECH-DRIVEN CULTURAL INNOVATION

    The video game “Black Myth: Wukong” is another recent cultural phenomenon from China that is yielding international acclaim. Not long after the game was released, a reaction clip posted by British gaming streamer “itsjavachip” went viral, as she was moved to tears by the emotional storyline of Bajie in the game, earning her a fanbase of Chinese followers.

    Last month, “itsjavachip” was invited to China to visit the production set of another original martial arts-themed Chinese game. At the studio, she learned martial arts moves, donned a black outfit and experienced wire-assisted motion capture firsthand.

    Calling it an “absolutely amazing” experience, she said that playing a character in the game would be a dream come true.

    Employing cutting-edge simulation technologies, “Black Myth: Wukong” immerses players in scenes such as ancient buildings in Shanxi and the picturesque landscapes of the Jiangnan region. As of the end of last year, the game had sold 28 million copies worldwide, generating over 9 billion yuan (about 1.24 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue within five months of its release.

    In 2024, domestically developed Chinese games generated actual overseas sales revenue of more than 18.55 billion U.S. dollars, marking a year-on-year increase of 13.39 percent. The success of Chinese games abroad highlights the dual driving forces of traditional culture and intelligent digital technology.

    In the realm of traditional culture, digitization is also breaking geographical barriers and becoming a “digital window” helping global audiences to better understand China.

    As of May this year, the Palace Museum had digitized about 52 percent of its collection; the flying apsaras of Dunhuang “dance gracefully” on the screen through digital technology; the Zenghouyi chime bells are “struck” in a digital world…

    “I can directly scan artifacts and learn relevant information through it,” said Italian blogger Massimo, who couldn’t help but exclaim while holding the AR guide at Henan Museum.

    Such “coolness” can help China’s content industry attract a wider global audience, said Kevin Kelly, founding executive editor of Wired magazine.

    FROM CONNECTION TO CO-CREATION

    Through China’s cultural exports, global audiences are not only able to connect and empathize with their content, but are also co-creating something even bigger.

    British web fiction writer JKSManga was initially a devoted reader of Eastern fantasy web novels such as “Soul Land.” A few years ago, he registered on WebNovel, an online literature platform under China Literature Limited, and started writing his own works. His breakout series “My Vampire System” has garnered over 73 million reads and has been adapted into multiple formats.

    For JKSManga, being urged by readers to update his stories is a source of great joy. He describes the writing process as a form of social interaction, a sharing based on shared values.

    As of November last year, WebNovel had around 6,000 translated Chinese web novels and was home to nearly 450,000 overseas authors and 680,000 original works by overseas authors.

    Hou Xiaonan, CEO and president of China Literature Limited, said that online literature has become a global cultural phenomenon, not only because of the global spread of Chinese IP, but also thanks to the globalization of the Chinese IP model itself.

    Meanwhile, Ye Xiu, protagonist of the popular Chinese web novel “The King’s Avatar,” was recently “invited” by Swiss authorities to serve as a “travel ambassador,” offering fans an innovative immersive experience.

    Wei Pengju, senior researcher at the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing, said China’s cultural trade has evolved into a hybrid export model of “digital content + IP operations + technological services,” and that Chinese cultural exports have entered a new phase highlighting content, empowered by technology, and featuring co-creation.

    Via such cultural interactions, with wider opening up, broader innovation and deeper cooperation, China stands ready to share with the rest of the world an ever-cooler China.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Local News – Community meeting to address future of Macetown road – Queenstown

    Saving a high-country road, cherished for its history, views and the access it provides to a special area, is the mission of a public meeting next month.
    Arrowtown will host a crucial public meeting on 7 July, where residents, outdoor recreationalists, 4WD enthusiasts and other interested groups will gather to discuss the future of Macetown Road.
    The Mahu Whenua Access Advisory Group, which includes representation from Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa, the Outdoor Access Commission, has been working for the past 14 months to develop a managed access system to preserve the road for future generations.
    Due to its ongoing deterioration, the road urgently needs a new management system, the group says. An unmanaged and unmanageable number of drivers are detracting from the iconic experience of 4WDers, mountain bikers, walkers and horse riders.
    Informally, Queenstown Lakes District Council has undertaken maintenance and repaired slips on the road in the past, but can no longer do so.
    “Without intervention, the road’s condition will worsen, and no one is available to repair it. We need to take proactive steps to prevent that from happening,” says Herenga ā Nuku Queenstown Lakes and Southland Regional Field Advisor Richard Ryall.
    The proposed system includes installing a squeeze barrier for cyclists and walkers alongside a locked vehicle gate. A fee-based online permit system will provide the code to unlock the gate for motorcycles and 4WD vehicles.
    “This system will not only help monitor the number of vehicles using the road and its seasonal patterns, but it also facilitates implementing caps on vehicle numbers during peak times. Our goal is to extend the life of this important track, which officially isn’t classified as a road,” Ryall says.
    Ryall emphasises the significance of Macetown Road, noting that losing access would be a blow to the 4WD community and other groups nationwide.
    “If we lose access irretrievably it will be a loss of national significance,” he says.
    “There’s a deep emotional value attached to this road, as reflected in the stories shared by the community.”
    At the meeting, the steering committee will explain its plans and engage with the local community.
    The Mahu Whenua Access Advisory Group has received some financial support and is awaiting responses to additional funding applications. With the support of the Shotover Four Wheel Drive Club and other outdoor recreation bodies, the project has gained momentum as the community rallies to safeguard their access to this cherished landmark.
    Herenga ā Nuku is working with the local council, Department of Conservation, Land Information NZ, Soho Properties and QEIINZ to develop an enduring legal access easement over the land.
    Ryall noted, “The terrain, multiple river crossings, and complex legal framework can make this a daunting task, but we are committed to seeing this project through.”
    Ryall is encouraging residents of Arrowtown and the surrounding areas to attend the meeting and participate in the discussions about the road’s future. “We want the community to help us ensure Macetown Road remains accessible for years to come.”

  • MIL-OSI: Cielo Provides Update on Settlement Agreement, Shareholder Meeting and Webinar, and Units for Debt Transactions

    CALGARY, Alberta, June 23, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cielo Waste Solutions Corp. (TSXV: CMC; OTC PINK: CWSFF) (“Cielo” or the “Company”) today provides an update on the Settlement Agreement, Securities for Debt Transactions, and Shareholder Meeting (each as defined below).

    Settlement Agreement

    Cielo had previously announced the execution of a settlement agreement (the “Settlement Agreement”) with Expander Energy Inc. (“Expander”) and certain directors, shareholders and related parties of Expander (collectively and together with Expander, the “Settlement Parties”). The Settlement Agreement provides for the effective unwinding, to the extent possible, of certain previously disclosed transactions (the “Transactions”) completed between Cielo and the applicable Settlement Parties, including Expander, pursuant to and in connection with an amended and restated asset purchase agreement dated November 8, 2023, as amended on September 16, 2024 (the “APA”). The unwinding was expected to take effect on June 13, 2025 (the “Closing Date”), subject to completion of certain closing conditions, including the payment of an aggregate amount of C$748,208.79 (the “Payment”) to the applicable Settlement Parties, including Expander, in full and final satisfaction of all and any outstanding fees owing by the Company. Cielo was unable to make the Payment in accordance with the Settlement Agreement. Cielo has received a notice of breach of the Settlement Agreement from Expander as a result however Cielo continues to make efforts to make the Payment and is in discussions with Expander and the Settlement Parties with respect to the extension of the Closing Date on mutually agreeable terms.

    Shareholder Meeting and Webinar

    As previously disclosed, Cielo’s shareholder meeting (the “Shareholder Meeting”) will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. As the Company has received no advance notice of any other nominations in accordance with Cielo’s Advance Notice Policy, only the incumbent directors of the Company, being Mr. Ryan Jackson, Ms. Sheila Leggett, Mr. Peter MacKay and Mr. Larry Schafran, will be considered, and are anticipated to be elected, at the Shareholder Meeting.

    Securities for Debt Transactions

    In a news release issued on May 16, 2025 (the “May 16 PR”), Cielo announced the anticipated settlement of an aggregate $1,797,195 (the “Original Aggregate Debt Amount”) through the issuance of securities of the Company (the “Securities for Debt Transactions”), subject to the approval of the TSX Venture Exchange (the “Exchange”). The Company would like to make a correction to the May 16 PR, which stated that the Company anticipated the issuance of 35,943,847 Repayment Units (as defined below), whereas the correct number of Repayment Units anticipated to be issued at the time of the May 16 PR was 33,433,120 Repayment Units.

    The Company has also agreed to increase the Original Debt Amount to $1,967,766 (the “Aggregate Debt Amount”). As a result of the increase, the Company intends to issue:

    • 33,523,132 units of the Company (each, a “Repayment Unit”, collectively the “Repayment Units”) in aggregate to the Creditors at a price of $0.05 per Unit, to settle $1,676,167 of the Aggregate Debt Amount (the “Units for Debt Transactions”), the terms of which were described in the May 16 PR; and
    • 5,832,180 common shares of the Company (the “Repayment Shares”, together with the Repayment Units, collectively the “Repayment Securities”) at a price of $0.05 per Repayment Share (the “Shares for Debt Transactions”) to two (2) Insiders of the Company (as that term is defined in the policies of the Exchange) to settle $291,609 of the Aggregate Debt Amount owing to the Insiders. No warrants will be issued to the Insiders.

    The Shares for Debt Transactions with the Insiders are considered to be “related party transactions” under Multilateral Instrument 61-101 – Protection of Minority Security Holders in Special Transaction (“MI 61-101”). The Company will rely upon the exemptions from the valuation and minority shareholder approval requirements of MI 61-101 contained in section 5.5 (a) and 5.7(1) (a), as the fair market value of the Shares for Debt Transactions does not exceed 25% of the market capitalization of the Company, as determined in accordance with MI 61-101.

    The Units for Debt Transactions and the Shares for Debt Transactions are subject to the approval of the Exchange. Upon approval and issuance, the Repayment Securities will be subject to a hold period of 4 months.

    Whether you’re in a ship, car, plane, or riding a rollercoaster, motion sickness (also called travel sickness or seasickness) can make you retch, vomit, sweat and become pale, and feel nauseated, dizzy and tired.

    For some people, watching dizzying scenes in a television show or simply thinking about moving can make us feel woozy. Playing video games or using virtual reality headsets can also lead to motion sickness (in this case, called “cybersickness”).

    But why does it happen? And why doesn’t it affect everyone?

    What is motion sickness?

    Motion sickness can happen in response to real or perceived motion.

    We don’t understand the exact mechanisms underlying motion sickness, although there are various hypotheses.

    The most accepted theory is that our brains like to know what’s going on around us. If our body is moving, but our brain can’t work out why, this creates some internal confusion.

    Within our brains, the “vestibular system”, which includes sensory organs in your inner ear, helps maintain balance.
    It has trouble doing this when you’re constantly being moved around (for example, inside a car) and sends the signals throughout our body which make us feel woozy.

    Supporting this theory, people who have damage to some parts of their inner ear systems can become completely immune to motion sickness.

    Why does motion sickness affect some people and not others?

    Very rough movement will make almost anyone
    motion sick. But some people are much more susceptible.

    Women tend to experience motion sickness more than men. There is evidence that hormonal fluctuations – for example during pregnancy or some stages of the menstrual cycle – may increase susceptibility.

    Some other conditions, such as vertigo and migraines, also make people more likely to experience motion sickness.

    In children, motion sickness tends to peak between ages six and nine, tapering off in the teens. It is much rarer in the elderly.

    In a car, the driver is normally in charge of the motion, and so their brain can anticipate movements (such as turning), leading to less motion sickness than for passengers.

    Are some modes of transport worse?

    Motion sickness is typically triggered by slow, up-and-down and left-to-right movements (low-frequency lateral and vertical motion). The more pronounced the motion, the more likely we are to get sick.

    This is why you might feel fine during some stages of an air flight, but become nauseous during times when there is turbulence. It’s the same at sea, where the larger and more undulating the waves, the more chance there is passengers will feel sick.

    Recent reports have suggested electric vehicles make motion sickness worse.

    This may be because electric vehicles tend to launch from a standstill with a fast acceleration. Sudden movements like this can make some occupants more nauseous.

    The silence of an electric vehicle is also unusual. Most of us are used to hearing the engine running and feeling the vehicle’s rumble as it moves. The silence in an electric vehicle removes these prompts, and likely further confuses our brain, making motion sickness worse.

    Interestingly, when an electric vehicle is put into autonomous (self-driving) mode, the driver becomes just as susceptible to motion sickness as the passengers.

    What helps motion sickness?

    For some people it never goes away, and they remain susceptible to motion sickness for life.

    But there are ways to manage symptoms, for example, avoiding travelling in bad weather, looking out the window and focusing on stable points (such as the aeroplane wing during a flight) or a distant stationary object (such as the horizon). This reduces conflicting signals in your brain.

    It may also help to:

    Medicines can help. Your doctor or pharmacist can recommend a variety of over-the-counter medications, such as antihistamines, which may help alleviate symptoms.

    Some people find alternative treatments helpful, including ginger, anti-nausea wrist bands (sea-bands or pressure bands). However we still don’t have enough consistent scientific evidence to endorse these remedies.

    There are longer-term options such as prescription medications and skin patches. However, many have potential side effects, so you should discuss these with a health professional.

    Not all of these medications will be suitable for children. However, there are some options which may help alleviate serious cases, and these can be talked through with your family GP.

    Sometimes, repeated exposure to the activity (called habituation) can help reduce motion sickness. The ancient Romans and Greeks reported the more experienced a sailor became, the less prone they were to sea sickness.

    While inconvenient, motion sickness may also have some evolutionary advantages. It’s thought species prone to motion sickness (including humans, fish, dogs, cats, mice and horses) avoid dangerous patches of rough water or high windy branches.

    We’re safest when firmly on land and not moving at all. Perhaps motion sickness is simply one way that our body works to keep us out of harm’s way.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Arrest – Domestic violence – Wulagi

    The NT Police Force arrested a 27-year-old male after responding to a domestic disturbance in Wulagi yesterday afternoon.

    About 1:30pm, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports of an ongoing domestic incident involving a 27-year-old male and his family. It is alleged the offender had smashed a vehicle window before threatening a female victim who is believed to be his partner.

    Police deployed general duties, Strike Force Trident, Traffic and specialist members to the scene and set up a cordon. An arrest plan was enacted resulting in the male being arrested without incident, and the victim and children involved being safely removed from the residence at the time.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Watch out for ruru/morepork

    One of the injured ruru which was found on the side of the road in Greymouth in mid-May has just been released after a spell recovering at the South Island Wildlife Hospital.

    “Usha” was found by a member of the public who used a towel to gently pick her up when she saw the ruru sitting on the ground unable to fly away.

    The bird was initially cared for by Cassie Mealey, a DOC Senior Technical Advisor who rehabilitates native birds in her spare time (under an appropriate Wildlife Act authority).

    After a few days of recovery and care Air NZ flew her across to the South Island Wildlife Hospital in Christchurch to see wildlife vet, Pauline Howard.

    The little ruru had x-rays that showed a fractured coracoid (a deep chest bone that helps stabilize flight muscles). This was likely the result of a vehicle hitting her. Treatment included pain relief, cage rest and fluids. Pauline said, “Usha was a model patient, and she had an uncomplicated recovery.”

    Once the fracture was stabilised and Usha had “rehab flight training”, Air NZ flew her back and Cassie released her into the wild near to where she was found.

    Cassie has had five ruru in her care throughout May, most with fractures from suspected vehicle strikes, and some with suspected secondary poisoning from mice that have eaten poison brodificaum bait used by households to control rats and mice.

    Chris Hickford, Greymouth DOC Operations Manager, says the work Cassie and the South Island Wildlife Hospital do to care and rehabilitate injured birds is really appreciated.

    “DOC can’t look after every bird, so we rely on a network of individuals and organisations nationwide who donate their time to do this work,” Chris says.

    Cassie says people are seeing more ruru in their back yards.

    “It is likely that the cooler weather and mice boom at this time of year that has driven them into urban areas where there is more food such as moths around streetlights and mice around houses and compost bins,” she says.

    After dark, ruru are attracted to streetlights, where they hunt moths attracted to the bright lights. They commonly fly into the sides of buildings or are hit by cars.

    “People can help protect ruru by maintaining old trees, as they like to nest in tree cavities instead of on the ground where they are more vulnerable. You can also build nest boxes, and place them in trees,” Cassie says.

    “Using traps instead of poison to control mice and rats also helps to protect the ruru population,” she says.

  • MIL-OSI China: Thailand steps up border controls with Cambodia to combat transnational crime

    Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced on Monday that Thailand will tighten its border controls with neighboring Cambodia to combat transnational crime.

    Speaking after a high-level meeting at the government house, Paetongtarn said restrictions on cross-border travel for both vehicles and individuals will be enforced, including limiting operating hours at checkpoints.

    She stated that crossings in seven provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border will be limited to essential travel, such as for students, medical patients, and vital goods.

    The prime minister said Thailand will halt exports of goods, particularly fuel and electricity, that support illegal operations across the border and will consider suspending fuel shipments to Cambodia suspected of being used in unlawful activities.

    Internet services and submarine internet cables connected to Cambodia’s government and military entities will also be suspended, she said.

    Following Paetongtarn’s announcement, the Thai military unveiled strengthened measures on border crossing with Cambodia, allowing only essential and humanitarian travel.

    Thailand’s latest measures came amid mounting border tensions with Cambodia. Cambodia said on Sunday it would stop fuel and gas imports from Thailand, while advising its citizens against non-essential travel to Thailand.

  • MIL-OSI China: Damascus church attack sparks regional condemnation over terrorism, escalation

    Countries in the Middle East have strongly condemned a suicide bombing Sunday evening at a church in the Syrian capital Damascus, decrying it as an act of terrorism and warning of its potential to inflame regional tensions.

    The blast, which struck during prayers, killed at least 25 people and wounded over 60 others. Syria’s interior authorities on Monday said they had arrested several suspects involved in the attack, claiming they were affiliated with the Islamic State group, which has not yet claimed responsibility.

    In a statement, the Arab League (AL) denounced “the unprecedented terrorist attack,” voicing concerns that the latest development would endanger the security and stability in Syria.

    The AL reaffirmed solidarity with the Syrian interim government and its people, adding that it backs the peaceful transitional path that will maintain the Syrian people’s rights and achieve their ambitions for stability and development.

    The Egyptian Foreign Ministry also strongly condemned the attack, reiterating its firm rejection of all forms of violence, terrorism, and extremism.

    In an official statement, the ministry emphasized the urgent need to intensify both regional and international efforts to eradicate terrorism and counter criminal acts aimed at undermining security and stability.

    Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced the assault on the Damascus church as a “despicable” act that threatens regional stability. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Erdogan extended his condolences to the victims’ families, the Syrian interim authorities, and the Syrian people.

    He stressed that Türkiye would not allow Syria “to be dragged into a new environment of instability by proxy terrorist groups,” reaffirming his country’s solidarity with its neighbor in the ongoing fight against terrorism.

    In a statement released by the state-run National News Agency, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam strongly condemned the “heinous terrorist suicide bombing” as a “despicable criminal act” aimed at destabilizing Syria.

    He reaffirmed the Lebanese government’s full solidarity with Syria in its efforts to maintain security and stability, expressing Lebanon’s readiness to coordinate on all fronts to strengthen security and combat terrorism.

  • MIL-OSI China: German industry sees dim outlook as U.S. tariffs weigh on economy

    Germany’s leading industry association has slashed its 2025 economic forecast, warning that escalating global trade tensions driven by U.S. tariff policies could plunge Europe’s largest economy into its third consecutive year of recession.

    At the annual “Day of Industry” event, the Federation of German Industries (BDI) projected a 0.3 percent contraction in German GDP this year, down from its earlier estimate of a 0.1 percent decline.

    “U.S. tariff policies — including announced and partially implemented duties on a wide range of imports — combined with geopolitical uncertainties, are dampening global growth,” BDI Director General Tanja Goenner said on Monday.

    BDI now expects global GDP to grow by 2.7 percent in 2025, half a percentage point lower than its earlier forecast, with the United States among the most affected.

    Although Washington has temporarily suspended “reciprocal tariffs” on European Union goods, the levies are set to resume on July 9. BDI estimates that, together with existing U.S. tariffs on EU-made cars and steel, these measures could reduce Germany’s 2025 growth by around 0.3 percentage points.

    “The German industrial sector is bracing for another difficult year,” Goenner said, noting that industrial output remains 9 percent below pre-pandemic levels and factory utilization is stuck below 80 percent. Despite some signs of stabilization, she added, “there is no sign of a real recovery.”

    Germany’s economy contracted in both 2023 and 2024, its first consecutive recession in two decades, driven largely by a prolonged downturn in manufacturing.

    “There is still a long road ahead to emerge from recession,” BDI President Peter Leibinger said. While he welcomed recent government measures such as tax relief, he stressed the need for more substantial reforms.

    Leibinger called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s coalition to implement bold structural changes, including cutting red tape and permanently lowering energy costs to restore Germany’s long-term industrial competitiveness.

  • MIL-OSI USA: SBA Offers Disaster Assistance to Missouri Small Businesses, Private Nonprofits and Residents Affected by Adverse Weather

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the availability of low interest federal disaster loans to Missouri small businesses, private nonprofits and residents to offset physical and economic losses from severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, heavy rains, large hail, flooding and flash flooding occurring April 29. The SBA issued a disaster declaration in response to a request received from Gov. Mike Kehoe on June 21.

    The disaster declaration covers the Missouri counties of Barry, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Greene, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Polk, Stone and Webster as well as the Kansas county of Cherokee, and the Oklahoma county of Ottawa.

    Businesses and nonprofits are eligible to apply for business physical disaster loans and may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

    Homeowners and renters are eligible to apply for home and personal property loans and may borrow up to $100,000 to replace or repair personal property, such as clothing, furniture, cars, and appliances. Homeowners may apply for up to $500,000 to replace or repair their primary residence.

    Applicants may be eligible for a loan increase of up to 20% of their physical damages, as verified by the SBA, for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements include insulating pipes, walls and attics, weather stripping doors and windows, and installing storm windows to help protect property and occupants from future disasters.

    SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program is available to eligible small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, nurseries and private nonprofit (PNP)organizations impacted by financial losses directly related to this disaster. The SBA is unable to provide disaster loans to agricultural producers, farmers, or ranchers, except for aquaculture enterprises.

    EIDLs are for working capital needs caused by the disaster and are available even if the business or PNP did not suffer any physical damage. They may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills not paid due to the disaster.

    Interest rates are as low as 4% for businesses, 3.62% for nonprofits, and 2.81% for homeowners and renters, with terms up to 30 years. Interest does not begin to accrue, and payments are not due until 12 months from the date of the first loan disbursement. The SBA sets loan amounts and terms based on each applicant’s financial condition.

    “When disasters strike, SBA’s Disaster Loan Outreach Centers play a vital role in helping small businesses and their communities recover,” said Chris Stallings, associate administrator of the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience at the SBA. “At these centers, SBA specialists assist business owners and residents with disaster loan applications and provide information on the full range of recovery programs available.”

    Beginning Wednesday, June 25, SBA customer service representatives will be on hand at the following Disaster Loan Outreach Centers (DLOCs) to answer questions about SBA’s disaster loan program, explain the application process and help each individual complete their application. Walk-ins are accepted, but you can schedule an in-person appointment in advance at appointment.sba.gov.

    Apollo (NYSE: APO) today announced that Apollo-managed funds, affiliates and other long-term investors have completed a $750 million investment grade rated financing for the Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL), an Adani Portfolio company and subsidiary of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), India’s largest private airport operator, that operates Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), the second largest airport in India.

    The 4-year senior secured notes will primarily refinance existing debt, enhancing MIAL’s financial flexibility to support operations, modernization and sustainability initiatives. The structure also allows for up to $250 million in additional funding to accelerate capital expenditure and capacity expansion. The transaction represents one of the largest private investment grade rated deals in India’s infrastructure sector.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Defense News: U.S. Army Garrison Italy remembers longtime auto skills mechanic

    VICENZA, Italy – The military communities of U.S. Army Garrison Italy, including Vicenza and Camp Darby, are mourning the loss of Gene Willie Strahan Jr., a devoted automotive mechanic, beloved colleague and cherished friend.

    Strahan knew cars—especially BMWs, his favorite. Friends described him as a gentle giant who loved car shows, fishing and spending time with his tiny dog, Thor.

    A U.S. Army veteran, Strahan served in Germany in the 1980s. As a civilian, he began working in Mannheim, Germany. He later moved to Camp Darby, where he worked as a contractor and later at the post exchange. Many remember him from his time at Camp Darby’s Auto Skills Center. Following downsizing there, Strahan relocated to Vicenza, where he worked at the Auto Skills Center, part of the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

    Strahan’s love of cars translated to a sincere dedication to community members who sought his help. He offered mechanical expertise to soldiers and civilians at Caserma Ederle with humility and genuine warmth. A few minutes in the shop with Strahan often felt more like catching up with an old friend than speaking with a mechanic.

    Over the years, Strahan earned several awards for his work. But his joy came from engaging with the community and making connections that lasted.

    News of his June 10 passing sparked an outpouring of online condolences from Americans and Italians in Vicenza and Camp Darby, as well as friends around the world who remembered his kindness during their time in Italy.

    Jimmy Roddy, DFMWR’s Business Recreation Division chief, first met Strahan 24 years ago at Camp Darby. There, Strahan helped organize the summer car show and became known for offering help to anyone with automotive issues.

    “A big guy, big smile with a bigger heart—always helpful,” Roddy said. “He was very low-key, for as big as he was. He was a gentle giant.”

    Nicknamed “The Frenchman” by fishing buddies, Strahan was born on Dec. 7, 1963 in France into a military family. He grew up around Army bases, to include time in Germany.

    Timothy Gordon, a friend from the Camp Darby days, recalled spending long hours fishing Italian rivers with him—a tradition that continued after both relocated to Vicenza. Another shared passion was cars.

    “If you asked him about a BMW, he could tell you about it from top to bottom,” Gordon said.

    In Vicenza, Strahan was often seen with Thor, a canine companion that went with him nearly everywhere.

    “The smallest dog you could imagine with the biggest man you could ever imagine,” Gordon said. “People would just watch them walk down the road. He just loved small dogs.”

    Strahan also befriended Soldiers, including Spc. Haron Palomo, a volunteer at the Auto Skills Center. Over the past two years, they joked, shared stories and discussed car repairs while Palomo restored a 1993 Honda Civic. As he did with other customers, Strahan offered tips on finding affordable parts.

    “Sadly, he didn’t get to see it finished,” Palomo said.

    Strahan is survived by his mother, daughter, sister and brothers, including Michael Strahan, a television host and former professional football player.

    A memorial service will be held at noon on June 25 at Caserma Ederle’s Chapel. A second service is scheduled for noon on June 26 at Camp Darby’s chapel.

    WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) joined U.S. Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Ted Budd (R-NC), and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) in introducing the Safe and Open Streets Act in response to recent anti-ICE riots in Los Angles. The senators’ legislation would make it a federal crime to purposely obstruct, delay, or impact commerce by blocking a public road or highway, and would penalize lawbreakers through fines or up to five years in prison. Senator Tuberville called for the arrest of California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their failure to punish the domestic terrorists in Los Angeles who were obstructing roads, putting American citizens in danger and compromising the free flow of commerce.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Alaskan Wildlife: Observations from the Aleutian Arc Expedition

    As the R/V Atlantis makes its departure from Dutch Harbor and heads south down the Aleutian Islands, the Alaskan wildlife is abundant like no other. The upwelling that occurs along the Aleutian chain makes these waters a highly productive place and as a result, these are prime feeding grounds for marine birds. The rapid fluttering of Tufted Puffins renders these birds unforgettable as they are known for their deep diving, not flying. Nonetheless, puffins remain a fan favorite on board.

    Murres and Northern Fulmars have colonies nearby and soar in the sky in the hundreds, giving the ship an elegant show to watch and an almost insurmountable task of counting them. One could not miss the graceful flying of the many Albatross species living in this area, including the Laysan and Short-Tailed Albatross, with their long wingspans and effortless gliding close to the sea surface. Cormorants and gulls are a few other bird species that have been sighted and added to our life lists!

    Aside from marine birds, seagoers have found joy in watching Northern Fur Seals. As the human occupied vehicle Alvin was deployed on the second day of the expedition, several fur seals curiously swam around the submersible, diving down and resurfacing every so often to look around. Everyone on deck found delight in this spectacle. On the third day of the cruise, as the science team transited with rough weather, a humpback whale and an orca made appearances to those who were lucky enough to spot them. Needless to say, the Aleutians are home to incredible wildlife and anyone who experiences it will leave in awe of what they saw.

  • MIL-OSI: Pelican Acquisition Corporation Signs Letter of Intent to Acquire Greenland Exploration Limited

    NEW YORK, June 23, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Pelican Acquisition Corporation (NASDAQ: PELI, the “Company” or “Pelican”), a Cayman Islands exempted company formed as a special purpose acquisition company, today announced that it has entered into a non-binding letter of intent (“LOI”) with Greenland Exploration Limited (“Greenland Exploration” or “GEL”) to pursue a potential business combination.

    Greenland Exploration is a Texas-based special purpose vehicle focused on developing strategic interests in North American energy assets. Greenland Exploration has an agreement that will allow it to invest up to $70 million in the Jameson Land Basin, where it’s partner March GL Company has rights through a drill in program to over 2 million acres on the island of Greenland. According to March GL Company, over $200 million has been invested to date by major oil companies (including ARCO) to develop oil reserves in the Jameson Land Basin. A 2007 estimate from the U.S. Geological Survey suggests that Greenland contains approximately 31.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent, including oil, gas and natural gas liquids. Taking this fact into consideration, coupled with recent US prerogatives to designate Greenland as a strategic defensive location, Pelican believes the proposed transaction with GEL could present an extraordinarily unique and attractive opportunity for its shareholders.

    Under the preliminary, non-binding terms, the parties are exploring a potential share-for-share exchange in which Pelican would acquire 100% of the issued and outstanding equity of GEL. While the structure remains subject to further negotiation and due diligence, the LOI contemplates an exchange ratio of one Pelican share for each GEL common share which would result in the issuance of 21.5 million shares of Pelican. In addition, March GL Company may receive certain equity exchange rights based on a notional valuation of $200 million, assuming a $10.00 per share value for Pelican, subject to final structuring and definitive documentation.

    As part of the contemplated deal structure, Pelican’s sponsor would forfeit founder shares such that post-transaction, its founder equity would equal 25% of the shares issued in its IPO. The current structure under discussion does not include a minimum cash condition from Pelican’s trust account for the transaction to close.

    SGI has released its 2024-25 Annual Reports, detailing a year marked by resilience, innovation, strategic investments, and a continued commitment to community safety and customer service.  

    “In 2024-25, SGI faced economic pressures, caused by rising claim costs, inflation, higher vehicle repair costs and extreme weather,” Minister Responsible for SGI Jeremy Harrison said. “Despite this, SGI’s strategic investment approach delivered affordable auto insurance rates and an $18.0 million dividend to support our government’s investments in services and infrastructure that benefit Saskatchewan families, communities and businesses.” 

    Saskatchewan Auto Fund*  

    Despite challenges, the Auto Fund maintained its commitment to affordability, customer service and traffic safety.   

    Auto Fund highlights for 2024-25 include: 

    • $1.170 billion in total net claims incurred.
    • $1.127 billion in gross premium written.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Man Charged for Stabbing Visitor at the Wounded Knee Memorial Site in the Pine Ridge Reservation

    RAPID CITY – United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that the United States Attorney’s Office has charged 18-year-old Raymond Eagle Hawk, Jr., of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, with Assault with Intent to Commit Murder.

    On June 12, 2025, Eagle Hawk was intoxicated and panhandling at the Wounded Knee cemetery parking lot. The victim, a 71-year-old man, and his wife had traveled to the Pine Ridge Reservation from their home in Texas to visit the Wounded Knee Memorial site, near Wounded Knee village, within the Pine Ridge Reservation.

    At the memorial site, Eagle Hawk asked the victim for money. The victim gave Eagle Hawk a small sum of cash, but Eagle Hawk continued to demand money. When the victim did not give Eagle Hawk more money, Eagle Hawk stabbed him in the throat with a knife. The victim sustained a grievous injury to his neck and attempted to return to his vehicle. Eagle Hawk continued to advance on the victim, but then fled the cemetery. The victim was transported to the Pine Ridge hospital and later flown by air ambulance to Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, where he underwent emergency surgery to repair the wound to his neck.

    Eagle Hawk appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann on June 18, 2025, and pleaded not guilty to the criminal complaint. Eagle Hawk was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending a preliminary hearing and a detention hearing, scheduled for June 27, 2025.

    The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years in custody in a federal prison.

    The charge is merely an accusation and Eagle Hawk is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

    This matter is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian Country be prosecuted in Federal court as opposed to State court.

    The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division. Assistant United States Attorney Heather Knox is prosecuting the case.

  • MIL-OSI USA: NASA Intern Took Career from Car Engines to Cockpits

    Some career changes involve small shifts. But for one NASA engineering intern, the leap was much bigger –moving from under the hood of a car to helping air taxis take to the skies.
    Saré Culbertson spent more than a decade in the auto industry and had been working as a service manager in busy auto repair shops. Today, she supports NASA’s Air Mobility Pathfinders project as a flight operations engineer intern at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, through NASA’s Pathways program.

    “NASA has helped me see opportunities I didn’t even know existed,” she said. “I realized that being good at something isn’t enough – you have to be passionate about it too.”
    With a strong foundation in mechanical engineering – earning a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Long Beach, Antelope Valley Engineering Program – she graduated magna cum laude and delivered her class’s commencement speech. Culbertson also earned two associate’s degrees, one in engineering and one in fine arts.

    Before making the switch to aeronautics, she worked at car dealerships and independent car repair facilities while in college. She also led quality control efforts to help a manufacturer meet international standards for quality.
    “I never thought land surveying would have anything to do with flying. But it’s a key part of supporting our research with GPS and navigation verification,” Culbertson said. “GPS measures exact positions by analyzing how long signals take to travel from satellites to ground receivers. In aviation testing, it helps improve safety by reducing signal errors and ensuring location data of the aircraft is accurate and reliable.”
    A musician since childhood, Culbertson has also performed in 21 states, playing everything from tuba to trumpet, and even appeared on HBO’s “Silicon Valley” with her tuba. She’s played in ska, punk, and reggae bands and now performs baritone in the Southern Sierra Pops Orchestra.

    The NASA Pathways internship, she says, changed everything. Culbertson was recently accepted into the Master of Science in Flight Test Engineering program at the National Test Pilot School, where she will be specializing in fixed wing performance and flying qualities.
    Her advice for anyone starting out?
    “Listen more than you talk,” she said. “Don’t get so focused on the next promotion that you forget to be great at the job you have now.”
    During her internship, Culbertson is making meaningful contributions toward NASA’s Urban Air Mobility research. She collects location data for test landing sites as part of the first evaluation of an experimental commercial electric vertical takeoff landing aircraft, a significant milestone in the development of next generation aviation technologies. From fixing cars to helping air taxis become a reality, Saré Culbertson is proof that when passion meets persistence, the sky isn’t the limit – it’s just the beginning.

  • MIL-OSI USA: SR 18 project to repave eastbound lanes in Auburn and replace bridge expansion joints beginning in July

    AUBURN – The ride through Auburn should get a lot smoother, as a project to repave a 3-mile stretch of eastbound State Route 18 and replace aging bridge expansion joints will begin after the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

    Starting Monday, July 7, the project will grind and repave eastbound lanes of SR 18 from C Street to near the Green River. This includes repaving the eastbound lanes on the bridges over Auburn Way and F Street. Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation also will repair pavement on the eastbound SR 18 on- and off-ramps at Auburn Way and replace worn out expansion joints along both directions of the C Street Southwest bridge.

    This section of SR 18, which carries about 65,000 vehicles per day, was last paved in 2003, meaning the asphalt has outlived its expected 15-year lifespan. When the project finishes later this fall, people should feel a smoother ride and eastbound SR 18 will be preserved for years to come. 

    What to expect

    Much of the paving work will take place weeknights between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. with single-lane and ramp closures.  A narrow section will require full closures of eastbound SR 18 for up to four nights to ensure worker safety.

    Replacing the joints on the C Street Southwest bridge will need a series of weekend directional closures of SR 18 and nearby ramps from 9 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Mondays. Eastbound SR 18 could close for up to four weekends, while westbound SR 18 may close for as many as three weekends. Both directions will not close at the same time.

    Signed detours using city streets will be available during directional and ramp closures. 

    WSDOT will try to avoid scheduling work during the Washington State Fair, large events at White River Amphitheater and the Muckleshoot Resort Casino and other nearby community events. The work schedule is still being finalized, but people can check the project webpage and WSDOT’s Real-time travel map for updates.

    LAKE FOREST PARK – Construction is set to begin on a fish barrier removal project along Lyon Creek where it passes beneath State Route 104/Ballinger Way Northeast in Lake Forest Park. 

    Beginning Monday, June 30, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will replace an existing culvert that prevents fish from passing with a 24-foot-wide concrete structure near the SR 104 intersection with 35th Avenue Northeast. The project also will improve habitat within Lyon Creek, which flows from Snohomish County into Lake Washington through Lake Forest Park. 

    The new culvert structure will open 7.5 miles of potential upstream habitat to Chinook, coho, steelhead, sockeye, sea-run cutthroat and resident trout. 

    Closure details

    Construction will happen up to seven days a week, with traffic control primarily occurring between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Crews will perform site work and utility upgrades before installing the new culvert beneath SR 104, which will require extended road closures.

    The following closures are planned during different stages of the project:

    • Overnight, single-lane closures on SR 104, 35th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 185th Street with flaggers alternating traffic in each direction.
    • A five-day closure along Northeast 185th Street.
    • At least one overnight closure along 35th Avenue Northeast near SR 104.
    • A 35-day closure along SR 104/Ballinger Way.

    The dates for each extended closure have not been finalized, although the 35-day closure on SR 104/Ballinger Way is tentatively planned to start in early September. 

    What to expect

    Signed detour routes will guide vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians around the road closures. Local access will be permitted during construction, although people will not be able to cross through the work zones.

    King County Metro will relocate bus stops along SR 104/Ballinger Way during construction. 

    Johansen Construction Co. is the prime contractor for the $8.71 million project that, weather permitting, is expected to finish this fall. This work advances WSDOT’s efforts to comply with a U.S. District Court ruling requiring the agency to remove barriers to fish passage beneath state highways.
